tvN to remake Japanese drama Hundred Million Stars From the Sky
by tipsymocha
On the heels of MBC, KBS, and SBS announcing new dramas in their lineup, tvN has also revealed a possible new show in its pipeline: a remake of Japanese drama Hundred Million Stars From the Sky, which originally aired on Fuji TV back in 2002 and starred Kimura Takuya (A Life).
Judging from the title, I was expecting a nice rom-com or melo, but the plot skews more towards mystery-thriller and the romantic element it does have is kind of twisted. In the original, Kimura Takuya played a mysterious sous chef, Ryo, who catches the attention of a detective (Akashiya Sanma of Hatachi no Koibito) when his girlfriend’s apparent suicide turns out to be a murder cover-up. As the detective digs more and more into his suspect, he learns about Ryo’s womanizing, his obsessive girlfriend, and how it might relate to a painful memory in the detective’s past. Things only get more complicated when the detective’s younger sister develops a relationship with Ryo, and the detective tries to save her from the possible murderer’s influence as the evidence and body count rises.
Man, that’s pretty good stuff. I’m always into a good whodunnit story, and this plot sounds like it has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. tvN hasn’t announced any directors or writers attached to the show, let alone any actors, but I’m dearly hoping that they recruit people with experience in thrillers because, in the right hands, this show could turn out amazing. The cable network has a pretty good track record with remakes, including Liar Game, The Good Wife, and The Liar and His Lover, so don’t let me down now tvN!
It’s not a done deal yet and there’s no word on when tvN expects to air the show, but the remake of Hundred Million Stars From the Sky will potentially be broadcast sometime in the latter half of 2017. Word of warning, for those of you beanies who’ve seen the original, no spoilers!! Or I will go all rabid dog on you and bite.

TVN now only relies on copy/paste. Seems like K-drama land is so short of good scrirptwriters(no imagination or creativity) that half of the content is directly taken from neighbour country.

korean remake a lot more than japan and most of it suck. e.g (To the Beautiful You, operation proposal, He who can't marry, Dr. Jin, playful kiss to name a few). There are decent remake like ( Liar Game, The Suspicious Housekeeper and The Queen's Classroom).
Japan also remake korean drama but most of it are a success( Maou, Kitai Zero no Shinnyu Shain, Ikemen Desu Ne). They don't remake a lot.
As both of the country is remaking classic, my heart hope that korean doesn't screw this up as even the recent. "the liar and his lover" is disappointing. It is barely decent for me.

BIG SPOILERS DONT READ IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE JAPANESE VERSION OR IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW .....
wow this is a pretty dark theme for a k-drama. I know they have sometimes had shows that have step siblings or 2 people who think they are siblings falling in love, but in this they are actually brother and sister. I guess if someone is going to remake it, it had to be either tvn or jtbc cause there is no way the big 3 could have this type of romance. I'm wondering if they will just take out the romance or maybe change it or just keep it the same.

I watched the j-drama on youtube a long time ago, when I was still very new to Asian dramas. I was fascinated by their relationship in the beginning. He was so mysterious only moved by her, and she was so sweet and innocent. But then my hopes were dashed, and this show turned out so twisted and tragic.
However I would be interested to see how a k-drama would reinterpret this show. I can see the production being more slick, and the male lead being more mysterious. But I hope they will make it that she and the male lead are step brother and sister, so that they can have a happy ending. Otherwise I don't think I would want to put myself through the experience of this story again.

To all, I'm talking on the line of spoilers too, so please don't peek if you don't want to read more into it. To @sweetsour, correct me if I'm wrong, I thought the sous chef played by the more handsome guy lol [forgot his name sorry and I'm kind of in rush], was the male lead and not the other guy? So I read the synopsis of the drama and read that the inspector, who was looking for the murderer, he's the one who's little sister falls for the suspected murderer. So did I get it all wrong then? Cause if what I read stands correct then I don't see what's the problem with the story? If the second lead, [ as I assumed the inspector will be], is in love with his sister, then it's okay right? I don't know may be I misunderstood the story line completely.

Okay Fay17, I'll explain. I am about to post some major spoilers ahead, so other readers you have been warned.
Kimura Takuya (the more handsome guy and the male lead) is a suspect (if I remember correctly) of the murders that are taking place. The detective (who is the heroine's older brother), is on the male lead's trail, because he is convinced that the male lead is the culprit. The detective is not the heroine's biological brother, he adopted her when she was very little.
The H and h meet, and he is very very cold and closed off, while she is very sweet and friendly. In the beginning I think he starts to toy with her, because he wants to get back at the detective, while she starts to fall in love with him. However somewhere along the way, he starts falling for her. The male lead is also haunted by some flashbacks from his childhood, but the flashbacks are very vague.
When the H and h get intimate, the male lead notices that the heroine has a burn scar on her shoulder like his. What's more intriguing he notices that when he stands behind her to hug her, their burn scars appear as if they complete each other.
All this is happening, while a game of cat and mouse is going on between the male lead and the detective (who doesn't know that his adopted sister is in a relationship with the suspect).
Later on the male lead finds out that the heroine is actually his sister, and the detective had adopted her.

there are jdramas which are more true to life. from the fashion, location, place of stay, relationships etc2.

casting will be really really crucial. the 1st one that came to my mind is definitely kim jae wook, especially after seeing his awesome performance in the recent Voice. although i have been waiting for his 1st leading role in a romcom, i totally dont mind him picking this up before a romcom script lands on him lol!

I would argue Oguri Shun could have been given more to do. Ikuta Toma was serviceable but not outstanding. Ueno Juri was under-used, but her character was such that even if you took Mizuki out, it wouldn't have affected the story too much.

The darkness of this rather twisted drama also reminds me of another Jdrama "The Perfect Insider" which is rather twisted and dark in a way too and also another Jmovie "Confessions", which is also a very twisted and dark one. I think Japan is kinda more open to such dark and twisted themes in their drama and movie.

I loved this j-drama so much that I had to register to make this comment, lol. It's my favourite Kimutaku drama. But more than Kimutaku, my favourite part of the original was the female lead Eri Fukatsu. She had this mix of cuteness, nervousness, and mystery that I think really helped the story, which was indeed very dark. I've read reviews comparing it to Greek tragedies, which touch upon themes of morality and prophecy. It would be a shame if the story gets changed for a "happier" note, because that would be really missing the point of the original.

It depends on who makes it, I think. There have been a lot of good slice of life dramas with relatable female leads in the last few years, especially from tvN (Let's Eat 1, Drinking Solo, Flower Boy Next Door…). We Married as a
Job is a lot closer to the typical k-drama romance than most j-dramas; I think it could translate well, given the right team behind it. Plus while the relationship is very relatable, the female lead is pretty unusual and quirky. The whole marriage contract/housewife as employee premise and the female lead's decision-making within their arrangement seems perfect for a k-drama rendering. As long as they don't rewrite the character into a Hwang Jung Eum type drama queen, it could be really fun. I wouldn't mind seeing a Korean spin on the ending dance and song either :p

With all due respect, this is not dark, although it's one of the better dramas of the early 2000s. I've seen it, I wrote a review on it, and I'm fairly used to dark and perverse in Japanese cinema. Sora Kara is almost par for the course if Japan wants to venture beyond fluff. I saw the twist early on in the drama, and it was nothing shocking - to the extent that I wish they'd dealt with it earlier. The drama does attempt to ask questions of nature vs nurture, and for that I give it props. The leads' chemistry was excellent and worth a watch, and this is one of Kimura's better roles (he hasn't had many). But as for dark, heavy and twisty, this is on the average side.

Wow, honestly this is the first bit of upcoming-drama news that I've been excited about in the longest time... I love love love the original, and have watched it maybe 3-4 times. Yes, it was twisted and dark, but there were also strong glimmers of hope and possibility throughout the drama. I loved the detective role, too, in addition to the two main leads (i.e., KimTaku and Eri Fukatsu).
As always, I have mixed feelings about remakes; how good tvn's version turns out will really depend on who gets cast...among other things. But this news excites me so much, I'm kinda really hoping they go through with this and remake it.
Eri Fukatsu delivered a quirky yet vulnerable performance. Many Korean actresses could pull that off, but I hope they don't cast someone too cute and pretty. It would be interesting to see someone unexpected, like Seo Hyun-Jin, in this... Or, maybe UEE (who is very pretty, and tall).
For the male lead, they need to cast someone whom many many girls/women would fall for--i.e., someone dripping with charisma and oozing with mystery. And...no one comes to mind!! haha..
A'way, I've had my say. Consider me in!

This can go sooooo wrong. No one can ever replace Kimura. okay...maybe I will settle for Gong Yoo. It is a twisted romance and Jdoramas do this do well. I remembered it blew my mind away with the ending and the plot. I wonder if TVN dare to challenge the topic on incest with the country so rooted in Confucisim. Its a sad ending when the lovers discover the truth. Everyone should watch the J version before Korea adds their own cultural touch to it.

But even when the length is only 12 eps 45 mins each I thought it was kinda slow, with typical kdrama length (16, 20 eps 60 mins each) it will probably move at a snail pace...

hmm I remember watching the original years ago but I don't think I ever finished it. I found it quite slow and a little dated. The casting was spot on though (I later found out that the inspector characters actor is actually a comedian and was pretty shocked) and it was more explicit than I would expect a kdrama to go... I suppose a cable channel is the best place for it, though I don't really trust tvn.

I find it hard to imagine that a Korean version would keep all of the sex scenes, but maybe as a cable show there would be more leeway. The original didn't totally work for me plot-wise, but it did have excellent actors.

I'm a HUGE KimuTaku fan and his role in this JDrama is one of (if not) the most twisted character he's ever played. Now, I'm wishing tvN would also do a Korean version of "Pride" or "Hero" or both.

As a asian drama fan(China,Taiwan,Japan and Korea), i like watching remake as they give a little change to the story which i look forward to. Korean remake (Operation Proposal, Dr. Jin, Playful Kiss) in general fail for me while japan remake (Maou, Hope - Kitai Zero no Shinnyu Shain,Ikemen Desu Ne) don't. There are decent kdrama remake but mostly no. I hope they don't destroy this drama as it is one of the classic and i know japan won't ruin "i am sorry i love you" as they rarely ruin remake and Nagase Tomoya is the lead. The lead in my opinion should be Song Jong Ki and Song Hye Kyo as Jong Ki act similar character in Innocent Man and Hye Kyo have similar aura with the actress in the drama in my opinion.

Please don't remake my favourite drama. No Korean broadcaster cable or not will go as dark and tragic as this story needs.

A million tears at the ending scene. Sora Kara for me was Eri Fukatsu, she was brilliant here, cute but she had her stubborn side.
"Spoiler"
( The scene that always stuck in my mind was their second meeting? at that eating place. She came in , tired after a hard day of work, ordered the grilled fish. She sat down at the table. She place a hot towel on her face , he came in and as she took off the towel and saw him standing in front of her and they both looked at each other, recognition on both their faces, He sat down at the counter, ordered a grilled fish too. While waiting for their order, a potato dish and a glass of beer in front of her (Eri Fukatsu and her beer), she took a sip of beer and ate the potato but her eyes looking to the side, always aware of his presence in that small eating place, he unabashedly looking in her direction as she eats. The grilled fish came and the lady owner served it first to him, Yuko/Eri stood up and said to him 'that's my fish'. The lady owner was apologetic saying she thought Yuko would have the fish later after she had finished her starter. Yoko was embarrassed and sat down again, he looked at the fish dish and then at her. He stood up and gave the fish to her saying since she ordered it first, she was surprised but didn't protest. He stood at the counter and ordered natto while she ate the fish, using her finger to take out the bones from her mouth.) -epic scene this, for some insane reason this scene just stuck in my memory. Maybe because food was involved?
