I’m Sorry, I Love You gets a Japanese makeover
by tipsymocha
Ahhh, I’m completely torn about this news. I’m Sorry, I Love You, which aired back in 2004 on KBS and starred So Ji-sub and Im Soo-jung, is getting a remake in Japan this summer. This was one of those iconic dramas back in the heyday of early Hallyu, and helped propel its leads to stardom. It was also the first hit drama for Lee Kyung-hee, whose follow-up shows (and sentimental favorites) like A Love to Kill, Thank you, Will It Snow for Christmas, and Nice Guy cemented her status as resident queen of the melo genre.
On the one hand, I’m so fond of this show and this writer (one would almost say uncontrollably so *badum ching*) that this news makes me happy it’s getting a revival. On the other, I recall previous Korean-Japanese crossovers, and the track record isn’t stellar. By all accounts Misaeng’s Japanese remake was better received, so here’s to hoping the Korean to Japanese track is a more propitious one.
I’m also curious to see what the tone will be like in the Japanese redo, because the J-dramas I have watched were either comic book adaptations that stayed pretty true to its source material, or were the slice-of-life shows that Japan does so well. And I’m Sorry, I Love You definitely doesn’t fit into either category. The Korean version was all kinds of angsty with a dose of makjang that made it ridiculously addicting: There were birth secrets, terminal illnesses, brothers in love with the same girl, organ transplants via noble idiocy suicides, etc. I’m not ashamed to say I ugly-cried. A lot.
Nagase Tomoya, Yoshioka Riho, Sakaguchi Kentaro
The Japanese lineup has also been announced, and we have Nagase Tomoya (Too Young to Die!) in So Ji-sub’s role, Yoshioka Riho (Quartet) in Im Soo-jung’s, and Sakaguchi Kentaro (The 100th Love with You) will play the role Jung Kyung-ho originated. I am wholly unfamiliar with the two leads, but I have seen Sakaguchi in Heroine Shikkaku and My Love Story!, and good Lord, is he pretty. He’s also a decent actor. Which is important. Right.
The Japanese I’m Sorry, I Love You will air on TBS this coming July. Now, for the most important question: Will Nagase Tomoya sport THE hair?

i can't decide if i should recommend you watch it first or not if you're going to watch the jpns remake. knowing the source material can be both good and bad. i pass judgment a lot more if i watch the source material first and then go on to see the remake. on the other hand, i'm less prejudicial when i watch the remake first. all i can say is have fun watching! lol... please let me know how it turns out...

It's similar to having had read the book before watching the movie. If I read the book first I am much more judgmental than if I have seen the movie first. In this case, I have seen the source material first but don't remember a thing, so if I were to watch the remake I would not be comparing.

Haha, I think if it's a book to show/film adaptation I'm much more judgmental. If it's a show to show thing, unless they get everything absolutely wrong, I'm usually OK and while I do compare I may be able to find something to like even with a different approach. Recently, I watched the Chinese remake of She Was Pretty and there were some things I really liked in that version compared to the original even if it was twice as long, haha.
I'm more so saying I should watch it since it's always been on my to-watch list but I've just never gotten around to it. Having an adaptation of something come out, for better or worse, always suddenly makes these situations more of a priority for me lol.

Yes. Kentaro is super pretty. I love him so much in ore monogatari. But well, he is decent. I don't know if he is good enough now to play angsty character in angsty story. I am excited yet afraid at the same time.

Thanks for mentioning Sato Takeru. I am not that familiar with the new generation of Japanese actors (I am still stuck in the era of Kimutaku and Fukuyama Masaharu though) but Sato is amazing and he has that acting intensity as So Ji Sub. He would be wonderful in this role minus that ugly hair. But I think his status is too big in Japan to be doing a remake.

I think Takeru is happy doing live action adaptation films since jdrama ratings are dropping evey season. And the fact that Tenno no Ryoriban was a hit so the pressure to do well is huge too.

It's a double edged sword. Once an actor have ratings and popularity success in one drama, the pressure is huge to replicate that.

I agree! i love Nagase but Sato Takeru would also be amazing in this role (and he's around the same age as the other actors). The actresses you mention happens to be my favorites too but Yoshioka Riho isn't bad either just a little unknown, i think this is a good project for her career alias for Aragaki and Satomi wouldn't make much of a difference since they're already popular.

I don't think I'll watch it because I can't even rewatch the original one despite my fondness for it. It was the second drama I ever watched and by the end of it, I could not sleep until I finished it because I was so depressed. Thinking about it now, I'm not sure what kept me going because most people would call me crazy for putting myself through that emotional turmoil, willingly. However, hope it turns out well and I wish them luck. I wonder if they'll use the same song by Mika Nakashima. I hope so!

I'm conflicted!
1) I love the original cast - So Jisub crushed it (and my heart)
2) I don't usually like remakes when the original's so good - save remakes when you've got a good idea poorly executed - but occasionally I prefer a remake to the original, like Hana Yori Dango (with Matsujun!) over the Taiwanese original.
3) I love Nagase Tomoya - he can do comedy, he can do angsty, and he's got the bad boy vibe (and maybe he'll sing the theme song with Tokio)
4) I love Nagase, but he's a little old for the character as portrayed by So Jisub so they'll have to do some re-writing...

Yaaas! +1 for Hana Yori Dango with Matsujun! That moment where he lets himself get beat up for Makino Tsukushi: "Why didn't you fight back?!" and he tells her "Isn't it obvious? I love you." (like, 6 episodes in, too!) killed my unjaded drama watcher's heart back in the day and launched me into this crazy ride of Asian drama fandom. (sorry...this was offtopic. I've never seen I'm Sorry I Love You, but I came for the pretty So Ji-Sub pictures...)

Sakaguchi Kentaro is ok, last time I saw him he was a bit expressionless, especially near Yoshitaka Yuriko.
Nagase Tomoya, I just love him and I 've been in love with this guy for years, so I could check this out just for him.
I also liked Yoshioka Riho in Quartet.
Overall it sounds like they want to make this a hit with such a high profile/trendy cast....!

Yoshioka Riho is still pretty green but she seemed promising in what little I've seen of her. There's a 15 year age gap between her and Nagase though.... I get that he probably fits visually, but then you should age up the whole cast and not just him.
I only remember two Korean to Japanese remakes - You're beautiful/Ikemen desu ne and Misaeng/Hope - and both were neither great not terrible. Though only the former managed to capture the spirit of the original.
Japanese melos with makjang-ish plots in recent memory tend to skew over the top ridiculous and trashy. There are quite a few older ones that did such stories very well though.
So... I'm hoping for a good drama but my expectations won't be too high.

well, this was somewhat unexpected. i still watch the middle of i'm sorry i love you once in a while and didn't realize it was even being considered for a remake. i don't mind remakes if it is done well (hana yori dango, hanakimi, and witch's amusement are some of my favorites) but not if it turns out like the time i loved you (good source material, horrible remake). i do hope that the remake brings it up to date and will execute some things better. i'm often haunted by bad endings and this remains one of them.

I'll give this a try. I've seen Sekai no chuusin de ai wo sakebu (Crying Out Loud in the centre of the world) and One Litre of Tears and based on my experience from those two melos, Japanese doramas can deliver melos well. I'm just not sure how they'll go with this as this is an adaptation, but I'll still give it a try. I've seen more Korean dramas than doramas but every doramas I've seen hits me in the right spot. They're very good with their human dramas too. As long as the staff and crew know what they're doing, I'll keep an eye on this show.

as much as I am into jdramas, I'm split on whether or not to watch the original before or after the remake. I know a number of people who enjoyed japan's misaeng adaptation, only my favorite drama ever, but I was sehr enttäuscht & didn't finish. I'll be much less critical of japan's version if I watch korea's drama afterward, buuuut it's also fun to share thoughts with people who are familiar with the source material...

OMG what an awesome cast! it didn't even cross my mind to see Nagase in this kind of role, he's a good actor but i hope they don't give him too much english lines during the US scenes lol. I've only seen Yoshioka Riho in Quartet and i quite like her there but i have a feeling she'll do well here too. And Sakaguchi Kentaro i don't even need to worry, he's a versatile actor and the role will fit him just right.
I can't wait to see this new drama version, i just hope they don't copy the hair from those days hehe.

Ooh!! I'm surprised the male lead is Tomoyo Nagase. He's awesome in comic roles like Mukodono and My Boss My Hero. Not sure if he's suitable in such an antsy role.
The heydays of Hallyu with makjang elements were workable, but nowadays it's so cliche.

Will he sport the hair? Let's hope not. Leave it in the past where it belongs, along with that headband. I'm not familiar with any of the actors nor the do I really like jdramas all that much (most of them are too -slice-of-life for me. I need drama, drama, drama!) but I'll check this out. Probably after I rewatch the old one, since I don't remember much about it, but I remember liking it.
I don't know if they'll adapt it well or not, but we'll see. I'm always interested when remakes come out. It's interesting to see where other countries take a certain story. It only sucks when they take them in terrible directions, which is most of the time, unfortunately lol.

This drama has a special place in my heart because it was my first ever Kdrama 12 years ago and I have been hooked to Kdramas ever since.
I remember I watched the entire thing over the weekend and cried so much that my nose got blocked and I caught a cold. Haha. Snow Flower makes me sad even today when it pops up on my playlist. :D
Not sure about a remake though and that too after all this time since Dramaland has changed over the years. It's also melo to the core and depends a whole lot on the respective actors skill. I admit I don't know much about the Japanese actors since I don't watch much Jdromo. Wishing them luck though. Hope they do a good job and live up to the original.

I haven't watched The Devil but I remember enjoyed watching Maou throughout its airing time. I think remake sometime can get viewers feel disconnected with the original plot and lose the charm especially from Kdrama to Jdrama as the latter has to condensed the episodes lengthy into their own format. Vice versa with Jdrama to Kdrama. Eventually, it's depended on individual's preferences. And yes, I would love to hear some thoughst from who watched both series too!

I watched both dramas (loved them both too) and they each have their own positive and negative points. The Devil has 20 eps so they were able to make the story more intricate and include a lot of details however bcoz of the length, there were a lot of boring episodes. Maou has 11 eps so it was fast paced. Not as intricate as the kdrama but there was never a boring episode. You'll just get sucked inside the story the whole time. In terms of acting, the lead guy (Ohno) in Maou is a couple of times better than Joo Ji Hoon (he's super hot but the Japanese lead got really amazing acting chops). For the actress, Shin Min Ah is better than the one in Maou. Uhm Tae Woong and Ikuta Toma were both good but UTW was a little bit better.

It's been such a long time that I don't remember much but I thought it was frustratingly melancholy, both guys will die, Korkut is gonna get killed by the guy whose girlfriend (or wife) is in love with him. There will be lots of twists, Korkut's father will show up, his sister's husband too, and a few new characters, it's gonna drag a bit, so yeah, hope I didn't spoil it too much.

Wow, a remake of Misa.
I'm ok with Nagase Tomoya, but Sakaguchi Kentaro isn't he too young for the role? I mean, the age gap of Nagase and Sakaguchi is double. In Korea's the age gap isn't that wide considering that both likes the main girl. Yes, Kentaro is the younger brother but his age is really to young to match a love triangle with Nagase. I am not familiar with the girl also but I believe she is too young to be Nagase's love interest. I know Japan may have considered this carefully before picking up their leads but I can't help but have a vague feel about this casting.

"There were birth secrets, terminal illnesses, brothers in love with the same girl, organ transplants via noble idiocy suicides, etc."
Sounds like Hoshi no Kinka (Heaven's Coin 1, 2 & 3). This was before trendy doramas became popular in Japan in the late 90s and early 2000s. I'm sorry but Kdramas are definitely not the ones to popularize the makjang-ness of their dramas lol.
