Dramabeans Podcast #36

We said we’d be back soon and continue our massive catching-up session, and for once we kept our promise! This podcast takes us back to last fall dramas, and we wanted to talk about them before they all faded from our memories entirely. Fingers crossed, we’ll be all caught up soon and ready to resume our regular schedule. Wish us luck!

Podcast #36

Running time: 1:03:28

Topics and dramas discussed:

  • Fantastic: The hilarious foot-acting, the friendships, the dreaded cancer
  • Drinking Solo (13:30): Its refreshing world, hilarious comedy, and likable characters
  • On the Way to the Airport (23:12): The beautiful direction and visuals, its story, its adultery theme
  • Shopping King Louis (29:43): Why we found it adorable, if completely absurd
  • The K2 (40:00): Where it was almost really great, its epic action scenes (correction: the car chase is Episode 3, not 2 or 4), and its love of Subway product placement
  • The Man Living in Our House (50:33): What we liked about the plot setup and plays on language, and what didn’t work as much
  • 1% of Anything (56:38): Why it’s a small story that works so well, its characters, and their sizzling chemistry

Aaah, I'm in episode 5 of Drinking Solo these days so yay!

It's funny because the episodes end with the K2 trailers, which make me sad again because of What K2 Could Have Been. I didn't mind the OST that sounds pretentious sometimes, I liked the action scenes and the fact that Wookie did his stunts, but the conflicts, the drama...we went through all that and...then that's how they ended everything? I love Jcw but I finished that drama for Song Yoonah, and... sigh. Just sigh.

The action scenes were very well done, and Song Yoon Ah was goddess in that show, but some parts of the show were crap.

I stopped watching k2 as soon as it became clear that yoona was the love line, because of WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN!

You guys, JCW had such marvelous chemistry with Song Yoonah. So I've just decided that The K2 was really an action version of Secret Love Affair, with Song Yoonah as the morally questionable older woman who has a passionate affair with Ji Chang Wook that turns her away from the Dark Side.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Drinking Solo! Girlfriday and javabeans reminded me of all the procrastination, panda videos, the laughs, a world that felt so real. Students could really identify. The biggest strength was that 'every person is acted like they were the hero of their own story'. Couldn't agree more :)

Thank you for the podcast! This is just what I needed to help with withdrawal after Chief Kim.

About, On the Way, they did romanticize and they made the significant others crazy to make it okay for them to cheat. Jang Hee Jin felt real to me because unfortunately I have seen real life mothers who aren't maternal and regret having a child and deal with it by pushing their child aside.
1% was love.

Aw, you ladies really DID keep your promise! Yay. Thank you!

I honestly only saw On the Way to the Airport, so I won't be relating much to this podcast, but that's not gonna stop me from listening to this a for a couple times while I patiently wait for your next podcast! I'm hoping once you ladies have caught up that your "regular schedule" doesn't mean months later! Hehe. I won't be greedy. I'll be be patient. Thanks again!

about Shopping King Louis, are you sure you didn´t just watch for the uncountable shirtless scenes, did you?

Even without those shirtless scenes, Seo Inguk was oozing hotness right from episode 1 until the end, plus the kisses. God those hot damn kisses, ?

Right! Why do we need shirtless scenes when we have SIG mesmerizing face to keep staring at, for me he's the most attractive Korean actor, I never get bored from looking at his face.

Yes indeed he has an attractive face. I remember his last year interview, where he said that people offered him role in dramas due to his unconventional face. Those people were goddamn right, and the fact that Seo Inguk look exceptionally good in anything, particularly suits make his charms oh so damn bewitching you see. Sigh.

Yes, and that is why I am currently binge watching all his dramas, but the one I have kept on playing would be HSKOS, Reply 1997 and SKL. And tons of his variety show videos. I am also happy to meet other SIG fangirls here you see, because in home I am the only one who is crazy about him, ???

Shopping King Louie; was one of last year best romcoms, along with Weightlifting Kim Bok Joo and Jealousy Incarnate. Not just because Seo Inguk is my bias, but the drama itself stand out for their funny and adorable interactions between the OTPs, their songs and OSTs(they even use lots of golden hits song that is approriate with every episodes) and not to forget, their unforgettable side characters. But what matters most is how Seo Inguk and Nam Ji Hyun works on their chemistry like magic, which is not everyone in the dramaland are capable off you see.
It will be a long 2 year drought on dramaland without Seo Inguk, trust me. ???

Yes I do read about it chingu! I hoped he get treated well before he off for his duty again. It may be good news to others, but for me I'd still need him to fulfill his military duty. I dont ever want people, especially knets critize him for it, because we all know how headstrong and responsible Seo Inguk is, ?

My dramas list this past year has been scarce and I only watched Drinking Solo out of all shows mentioned. That show was so relatable it hurts. Every character feels real and charming and lovely, with genuine emotions and reasons for behaving the way that they do.

I've been wanting to marathon 1% of Anything because of Ha Suk Jin, but keep not finding the time. GF comments made me go browsing for the kiss scenes though! :D

Just hearing the 1% intro song made me grin happily :--) Such a lovely drama!!

I actually saw Ha Seok Jin playing a nice guy in Legendary Witch....and he was a bit bland there...though that probably was more fault of the writing (and I definitely wanted more scenes with his little daughter).
As for Drinking Solo, the drama gave me the same feelings/mood as the first Let's Eat. Especially the intro :--)
The characters were great, being it the students or the teachers (btw, it is now strange seeing the teacher as the brother in Father is Strange..). Only the last two episodes felt a bit too rushed....

Airport....the mystery was the pull for me as well. And then I wasn't able to leave. I wish they more explored the line between friends, soulmates and having affair and their inner struggles. It's not that they didn't at all, but I expected more, and with more depth...

Anyway, thanks for the podcast and can't wait for the next one!!

Aah, now you've made want to watch Shopping King Louis!

I love SIG! - I'm sad that he enlisted already and I was scouring the web for some pics of him entering, like, where are the articles and the pics? Others who've enlisted "quietly" still had some pics :(

Anyway, I'd put off watching Shopping 'cos of the review that it's not the most realistic of shows, but the cute sounds like it's worth it so I'm gonna check it out

Heartfelt thanks.

You did a podcast once where it was more about specific actors/themes in Kdramas and I was wondering if you were intending to do something like that again, because I really enjoyed it. I understand that you've got so much on but I just wanted to add my vote for more of that.

Once again, thank you.

Are the podcasts on itunes? Or is it possible to put them on itunes? Normally I listen to podcasts while I'm driving to work and I just get them from the podcast app on my iphone. Anyway, Yay, I don't know if I can handle two DB podcasts in a week :)
