Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
I’m still in catch-up mode, but I diligently made my way through my stack of episodes ’cause (1) I can never stay away from dramas for too long, and (2) they pile up so quickly that the thought of what I’d have to confront if I kept ignoring the pile was too daunting. I mean, I guess I could just… not… watch some of them… except that I can’t, because then I wouldn’t be me, and that’s crazy talk. –javabeans

Tomorrow With You: I don’t trust him with her heart, but when he was going all out to woo her, I couldn’t blame her for feeling fluttery and overwhelmed by the romance. It makes me feel uneasy, even as I’m totally with Ma-rin in finding him swoony, because this story could take a hairpin turn at any moment. Plot-wise, I like that the time travel is a mystery and is plotted with some intricacy, not just a device to give us hijinks.
Father, I’ll Take Care of You: Dong-hee and Sung-joon should only ever go to libraries. Can we just lock them together in one and let the romance bloom, without any crazy bosses or overbearing parental figures? After all this time trying to ignore their obvious attraction to each other, it was satisfying (and hilarious) to have him blurt out, “Fine, then just marry me then!” It was so awkwardly romantic, even if the not-really-proposal didn’t stick.
Introverted Boss: I feel like this show secretly changed writers, or the writer got a lobotomy, or something. The show is softer now, more pleasant and cheerful, and I do like watching the cute, funny exchanges as Hwan-ki opens up and Ro-woon becomes his cheerleader. However, I find myself wondering how the heck we ended up here; they turned a really fascinating, damaged character into a guy who’s just kind of shy now, and I don’t understand how that happened. It’s great for him as a person, since I want happiness for him, but I feel shafted on the development angle.
Hwarang: I’m a little behind on this show, because I got stuck around Episode 13 or 14 when I realized that I don’t really feel a strong pull for the main couple. I like them as individual characters, and I even kind of like the love triangle, but it occurred to me that I’m more invested in the side romance with Ban-ryu and Ah Ro’s ditzy friend, who are dorky and cute. I do still find this show quite pleasant to watch, but it feels like all the emotions are kind of on one level.
girlfriday
Tomorrow With You: I have the biggest crush on Lee Je-hoon right now.
Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: I’m really loving this whole Godfather theme with Gil-dong as the good son who doesn’t want anything to do with his mobster father’s shady business, setting the stage for a later reversal when he becomes the reluctant leader of this ragtag gang. This show is slick and cheeky and epic in all the right ways, and every week I wish I had more episodes to watch.
Hwarang: I realized this week that we only have two more episodes to go, which is a little shocking for how little the story has advanced in recent weeks. Where did all the bromance go? We had better get some heart-stirring my-brothers-in-arms-made-me-the-king-I-am-today business in the final two hours, or I’ll want my money back.
Defendant: I finally caught up and was immediately regretful that I hadn’t seen last week’s episodes when they aired. That was some twist! I promise never to get behind again. I don’t want to be out of the loop for all the hairpin turns in the story, especially now that You Know Who is in prison! Aaaaah! I have to say, this show is really using amnesia in a dramatically effective way, and even though I’m constantly frustrated that Ji Sung can’t remember things, for the drama’s sake I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Introverted Boss: I like Hwan-ki. A lot. His awkwardness at charades exactly mirrors how I feel about most, if not all, my social interactions. I’m glad that the heroine stopped trying to enact her weird revenge plot after realizing what an amazing guy Hwan-ki was and told him not to change. That was totally a kissable moment. Too bad Hwan-ki missed the social cues.
Laurel Tree Tailors: I feel like this drama could have cut out half the episodes in the middle, and it would still have been exactly the same. The long-awaited company CEO’s comeuppance has been dragged out so much that I don’t feel the usual catharsis I have when the villain gets what he deserves. Maybe emotional payout decreases in linear proportion to how much time it takes to resolve the situation. Anyhoo, I’m ready for the next family drama, so I’ll be looking forward to when this one ends in two weeks.

Currently recapping: Defendant
Introverted Boss: This week’s episodes were adorable, and the show’s rom-com is definitely in full sail now. I love that Ro-woon is finally seeing the error of her approach to Hwan-ki, and learning to let him show her who he is instead of always making assumptions or trying to force him to change. More than anything, Hwan-ki With a Crush is even more squeezably, squee-fully cute than he was before. (Also, disheveled is my new favorite look for him. Rawr.) I’m concerned at how sympathetic the show wants Woo-il to be, because there are some things bromance can’t cure, but I am curious to see where the show is planning to go with his arc. And I’m really glad that we’ve moved beyond passive-aggressive “kindness” to outright fisticuffs between Woo-il and Hwan-ki, because these two are well overdue for an confrontation.
Tomorrow With You: I think this is my favorite show airing right now. On one hand our leads’ hasty marriage is brought on by the very specific circumstances of time travel, life-or–death fate, and a cosmic connection, but on the other, it serves as a metaphor for any two people who marry with differing expectations from their life together. For a fantasy drama, and despite the show’s melancholy, almost dreamlike tone, that aspect is wonderfully real and poignant. I’m looking forward to seeing these two learn to navigate their relationship, and hopefully learn their lessons without hurting each other too much. Because they’re so perfect together it kind of hurts.

Hwarang (18/20): Heading into finale week. I only wish King Jinheung is sitting on his throne by the end of this mess.
Chief Kim (8/16): Aaah, my happy Wednesday-Thursday pill! Well, most of the time. NGM is giving a fantastic performance as Chief Kim and I’m in stiches every time he ups the company people, but I’m slightly worried the show will sacrifice Seo Yul’s character development. He wasn’t an outright baddie before, and still seems conflicted. Ok, who am I kidding. Mainly I’m sulking because my Yul-Ha Kyung ship crashed before it even set sail. *munches sadly on sausage snacks*
Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People (6/30): We are now getting into the main story of Gil Dong. I kind of wish I’d waited to marathon it because so far it’s the best historical drama I’ve seen in a while, with an exciting story, clever characters, poignant relationships, fun soundtrack… oh, and the cinematography. Everything in this show is working for me, so I’ll just sit back and enjoy the ride.
From my list of things to watch:
Reply 1988 (14/20): Ok, I struggled in the beginning. Episodes felt too long and some characters (read Deok Sun’s family) really got on my nerves with all their yelling and selfishness. I kept going and one by one started to learn more about the people of that neighbourhood. I get the impression that the ‘who is the husband’ mystery is not the main point of this drama, so I’m not shipping anyone except Taek’s dad and Sun Woo’s mom. Each episode feels like a 90-minute movie, leaving me with a sense of contentment but also too tired to binge watch.

Completely agree with you and GF about Rebel. It's the kind of show that makes me want to sit down and watch all the episodes at once. I love the journey we're being taken on with these characters and am actually having quite a hard time waiting for more. Loving the soundtrack too! I just figured out that Lee Honey sings that one sorrowful track and I'm so impressed.

I feel you. I am not even following any of the shows lately. I tried to watch Hwarang, Introverted Boss, but I feel like they are not for my liking. However, I am super excited with the new Friday Saturday JTBC drama. Park Bo Young is one of my favorite actresses. It seems like she has a cute chemistry with Park Hyung Sik. While waiting for Do Bong Soon, I am spending my time watching C drama Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. A good drama. The only downside is that it has 58 episodes (sigh).

Spot on with the Rebel! I really wish I'd discovered it sometime in May, so I could devour it in one go. I get such SFD feels! But it's so different! Which is great!
Chief Kim is my another favorite too. It's the first time I don't mind corporate business schemes in a drama, though the evil chairman, the evil perfume-sniffing lady and Yul sitting in their respective armchairs and plotting another ridiculously evil move against their own employees is getting kinda repetitive.
I was also bummed about Yul-Ha-kyung ship sinking so fast. I got really excited over that stupid ship, because, you know, Chief Kim is totally fine without Ha-kyung, but Yul...! When Chief Kim hilariously called him names ("You pshychopath! You always eat alone!"), I laughed and also felt a little sad. Maybe Yul wouldn't be so evil if he just had someone to share a meal with? A girl can dream.

I know I know, Yul-Ha-kyung shippers!
This week was very hard on us, but let's still keep hoping that Yul goes dark thing will be over at one's point.
I just don't want to believe that such a clever show will waste Yul's character especially considering positive feedbacks fo m audience about his acting. Call me blinded but haven't given up conspiracy theory yet.
He was so cute and different near her, and I haven't had enough of that Yul. Chemistry is great

I know, we are a sorry bunch! Let's hope cute Yul makes a reappearance.
So far I haven't got the feeling that Yul is undercover. He seemed to be someone who was disgusted both by the corruption of baddies and the losing streak of good people... so he decided to just live for himself, with the consequence that he's forced to align with those very corrupt people he hates. He really is like the mirror image of Chief Kim, since both resented being part of a system.
In favour of the conspiracy theory is the fact that we don't know why Yul joined TQ in the first place, and also his comments that 'we are walking the same path but don't have the same destination'. We shall see! :)

Hi WT ?! About Chief Kim, whyyy can't Yul and HK be together? I still hope this show will do something different and let that happen, but I also still hope Yul is undercover. And Chief and his wacky former Secretary can end up together, although after the last episode I'm thinking they can let her end up with the jr. accountant since they're fated by the Goblin music. Then Chief can unleash the fires hidden beneath the polished exterior of the HR nazi lady HAHA wouldn't they be a pair? But seriously, isn't Chief supposed to end up with the curly haired intern?
I recall hating Eunji's family (same parents) in Reply 1997 for the first few episodes due to excessive yelling so by the time I got to 1988 I noticed they seemed much quieter. ?

Hi bb! So we're both Yul-Ha Kyung shippers? Awesome! Though I have to say, my desire for Yul-Kim bromance was greater than any romantic pairing, but it seems like that ship is also sinking... *sob*
I wouldn't be surprised if ethical management nazi lady becomes the leader of Chief Kim's fan club by the end LOL. She'll have to chicken dance compete with Ga Eun.
Re Reply: Yes, well the yelling has fortunately quieted down. Also, it led me down memory lane, and boy was there a lot of yelling in my family (still is whenever we try to have a civilised family dinner) To my shame, I remembered I was quite the teenage dragon to my younger siblings, in true Bo Ra style (minus hair-pulling of course). o.O

Introverted Boss is getting better, right? I do wish they kept the more damaged elements of Hwan Gi present, but I otherwise am happy with the tonal shift and the freshly-written character relationships.
No one mentioned Chief Kim but for pure light-hearted entertainment you can't get much better. There's no tangible story arc, but that loose freedom of plot is allowing for plenty of time to soak in the fun of it all.
Also, Defendant is amazing and and early contender for best of 2017 imo. Though Ji Sung's scream when waking out of his nightmare in the most recent episode was a little over the top (in an unintentionally funny way). Apart from that, it's perfection so far and I hope the back half delivers on the quality of the first.

It's ok – not bad, but some parts of it are pretty cringeworthy. The heroine still doesn't make sense to me with her *one dream in life* being to find her prince charming / become a housewife – not when she's a super professional that really enjoys her work.
How she could respond with "No, I'm not really mad" to her colleague that forced her into an interview and lied in front of camera that they had been a couple for five years is beyond me. Hoping for a prince charming is one thing, but someone who is willing to straight-out lie (and then pretend it's okay because he's just wooing you with lying?!?). If she didn't want to say what she really felt, she should have walked away, or only interact with him professionally from now on. But she's just letting it slide.
I could also really do without the colleague and the female love rival (the ex) they are setting up, as they are just plain boring (or infuriating).
I guess the basic idea of the drama is for both leads to change and grow a little so that they can end up together, which is not a bad message and some scenes are cute/quite real. (And Ono-san is a gem of a friend/housemate.)
But I wish it had the depth & the quality of NigeHaji....

Voice: Still better than most police dramas I've seen in k-dramaland, but don't love it.
General and I: Solid but hated the way it was filmed, and they picked the wrong voice to dub Wallace Chung.
Eternal Love/10 Mile Peach Blossom: So I dumped Ice Fantasy early on and Goblin disappointed (and bored) me, but FINALLY I have my fantasy drama I've been wanting. The pacing of the story is excellent. I'm only 16 episodes in so it could go sideways on me at any moment. Credit to the writer adapting from the book because that's a lot of characters to develop.
Father, I'll Take Care of You: It's okay but this is definitely my multitasking drama. I can't just sit and watch this.
On my watch list: Rebel and Chief Kim but waiting until they complete their runs. I've heard Chief Kim is getting extended and sometimes that messes up dramas. I'm most looking forward to Man to Man/PHJ's new drama because I'm a sucker for a bodyguard story.

Our Gab Soon - There are obvious reasons as to why the longer dramas aren't as popular, it's definitely a commitment and i too prefer the 16 episode runners.
However, i have to admit, this has become one of my all time favorite dramas with its cliched and non-cliched tropes as well as the impeccable variety it offers with the nuances of each character. We expect too much propriety from dramas these days, constantly ignoring the fact that people react differently in different situations...even when they are put in the same situation again, different decisions could be taken. Gab Soon delivers this human complexity perfectly - we are exposed to multiple perspectives and are able to sympathize (or not) as we discover our own moral angle. I haven't yet see another drama which is able to do this so effortlessly. Yes Yes, we have some irritating characters as well, Yes Yes, there is a lot of explaining to do...Yes Yes, Humans Are flawed.
I'd definitely recommend to family drama watchers.

This drama if the writer could be a little bit more creative in portraying the characters, it will be better. At times I feel the mothers are loud and yelling too much. I perfectly fine with flawed characters but i found the characters' depth are qute lacking.

I have come to accept yelling as part of Korean culture, it's not rude, it's just how some people talk, not that it makes it sound nicer he he. (i mute the speaker lol)
I actually disagree that characters lack depth. The Writer has given every character a reason and motivation behind almost all of their actions, as exasperating as they may be. Lord knows we make the weirdest of decisions based on the lamest justification. Once you make up your mind, everything else is only an excuse.
Though we could say, since there are so many characters, it's not possible to build and grow each character with the same effectiveness.

I can't believe just how much I loved Hwarang at the beginning. As of now, I can't wait for this drama to finally end and put me out of this misery.
So, it's a good thing that Tomorrow with You continued to churn out good episodes. It managed to balance its romance and mystery plot line well.
I also started watching What's with this family this week. Currently at eps 4. It's a relaxing and easy watch. And I'm still amazed at Park Hyung-sik's many expressions.

I'm with you two on Hwarang. I loved it so much in the beginning until episode 8 more or less, and then... not much happened.
I haven't dropped it because 1) the story itself doesn't bore me, in fact I kept waiting for more 2) those damn cliffhangers. The writing is a mess but whoever wrote the final 5 minutes of each episode was good. Since Sammekjong marched into the throne room at the end of episode 18 I'm now stuck watching the finale. It's like the writer is yelling 'Suckerssss!'
In the drama thread some of us had a solution: watch it, and if it's no good then ask a grim reaper to erase memories of it.

Now what I do is reading the recap in DB first, pick up the interesting point (mostly Sammaekjong scenes, the boys, Ban Ryu - Soo Yeon, and the political plot) and leave the rest.
I finish 1 episode in around 20 mins! Cause as much as I want to satisfy my curiosity, I'm just not willing to waste my time watching mopey lovebirds or other non-sense things going on right now. LOL

High Kick 3 - Watched a video of Krystal and Lee Jong Suk - then watched a few more -
Those "stupid" and "Oh my god" Compilation videos too. Liked it and started to watch it.
3 days in and now i'm on episode 25. Favourite loose pair is Park Ha Sun and Ji Suk. Kim Ji Won and that smiley face Doctor are quite good too. I pity the mother. Rest of the characters are annoying. Selfish. Genes of father speak are typically visible in kids.
Chief Kim - This week was week compared to earlier ones. The story is still there where it was in episode 1. Nothing much added to plot either. Ep 8 was a disappointment. I, also do not believe Chief Kim's character progression natural. You can point out various issues but earlier scriptwriter was able to handle with sensible dose of humour but this week issues with story and characters surfaced. I'm still enjoying the show.
Missing 9 - I have compared Missing 9 with W - Two worlds and found Missing 9 Better. W's concept isn't something new or original. same with Missing 9.
If entertainment is the criteria then Missing 9 wins. Its humour hailstorm hits the viewers at random points in most vague manners possible. I don't know how to define the comedy part of the show. It doesn't fulfill the requirements of Parody and slapstick comedy. Don't think about why and how that happened. just accept it and then you can easily enjoy it.
Defendant - A- grade content from the writer of C grade city hunter. Still the show is a soap opera. Interesting to watch and that's it.
Rebel - Too Convenient and predictable plot till now. Going good though
No tomorrow with you sofcore porn of Shy Boss - Shy people must file a defamation suit against introverted Boss's creators. The show promotes and creates worst type of stereotypes.
Voice - lost most of the interest.
Dots(hindi) - Child was named Blackie - Yeah Blackie - Blatant racism there.
Father I'll take care of you portrayed Blacks in USA as criminals or too poor to feed themselves. Criminal part could be explained via stats but 2nd was difficult to defend. there was 1-2 more such events i don't remember
Father I'll Take Care of You - Library the quiet place of romance.

Wasn't the "blackie" term about him wanting a sheep or lamb or something? It was the word in his language. He was asking Onew for one but Onew interrupted it as his name.
I'm missing the racist part. Unless the language was completely made up.

I'm just a couple episodes behing but I'm amazed that in just a few weeks I managed to catch up ánd still like it! Wohoo. Thanks for the recommendation. I face-palmed at the end of ep 26 but after some initial hesitation I think I'm aboard the direction the plot is taking, how else would it stay lively for the next 20+ episodes?

The only k-drama that i currently watching is Tomorrow With You which is so far so good. The plot keeps getting better and interesting. No unnecessary stuff. I hope it continue its consistency.
Anyway, this week's episodes got me like riding a rollercoster. There is magical feeling like butterfly in my stomach that ready to explode in ep 5 and got me to the cloud 9, while ep 6 put me down and got me scared and sad. Although i'm happy cause i think that since ep 6 and forward the drama will get intense, i'm really afraid to know what will happen to our couple. Because it's currently airing and each episode left me in cliffhanger. i can't continue to new episode and have to wait for next week. The waiting for new episode got me crazy!! Agghhh... Honestly i'm on the verge of dropping this drama because of the wait. I'm no angel with patient as big as Texas... Every week i said to myself, let's wait until this drama finish then you can happily marathon in without stress from waiting of new episode yet of course i keep break my promise and check in with new episode.
I think 5 weeks in the future we'll getting emotional turmoil with their life. Gotta get me some tissue.
P.S. Only "right now"? Sorry girl, i have crush on him in Past - Present - Future... your move Girlfriday!
P.P.S. to cover the drought of waiting new episode of TWY, i'm now also currently watching Black Code which i think is better than Grey Anatomy aaa~~~nd i don't have to wait for new episode since it's already on season 2... hehehehe

I'm still on a drama slump, so I decided to check out Japanese animated films. I've only watched Hayao Miyazaki films before, but I read about Your Name by Makoto Shinkai. I finally saw it over the week and I like it a lot, but not on the level of absolutely loving it. This animated film is so visually appealing. Really gorgeous scenes. The characters are endearing and I like the plot conflict. I have next on my list other Makoto films to check out.

I also had watched that animated film recently. Your Name is definitely a great substitute for my much needed yearly dose of Studio Ghibli animated film. The film started off as your usual fantasy lit story with body switching trope such as Secret Garden and Freaky Friday as familiar examples. Due to that I weren’t instantly hooked. But the second half of it had me sold as the heightened stake of their mystical connection along with the excellent cinematography in terms of its drawing and music really brought forth the epicness of those scenes towards the climax of the story. Recommended for those who are still suffering from Goblin withdrawal because this film had the tragically beautiful plot and the bittersweet ending qualities checked.
Previousy I had this weird desire for a studio ghibli film to be adapted into a drama, now I want this one to be adapted too. I definitely can imagine PBG and KGE nailed Taki and Mitsuha character respectively.
If you’re looking forward to watch an animated film with a hint of Studio Ghibli, have a look at Kiara's link for Mary and The Witch’s Flower. It is by Hayao Miyazaki colleagues so hopefully it will deliver.

Makoto Shinkai does very pretty films but he isn't a particularly good story writer (I keep wishing he would get a script writer).
For non-Ghibli, I would recommend Hosoda Mamoru and Katabuchi Sunao. And Kon Satoshi (more serious/adult).

In a drama slump that's slightly self inflicted because I WENT FOR PARK BOGUM'S FANMEET!
*squee*
And Song Joong Ki WAS THERE TOO!
*double squeeeeee*

Need to catch up on Voice this week.
Also, cannot decide if I should start Tomorrow with You or just wait for Strong Woman to start, or start something that's pending like Let's Eat or Tree with Deep Roots. Maybe not the latter since it's heavy going. Or get off my ass and watch Weightlifting Fairy since everyone (and their mom) practically has recommended it to me. But somehow I'm dragging my feet. I've just marathoned Signal this week. I was totally mindblown you guys! Everything was so perfect & amazing that I even had to admit that it definitely pushed Reply 1988 from its no. 1 position in my favourite drama of all time list. I know I was really late in discovering the greatness & grandness of Signal. Blame it on my trying to heal my broken heart over Junghwan not being the husband back then. :'( But as we all know, better late than never. After watching Signal, I was really hoping everyone can have a Lee Jaehan in their lives. But better yet, why don't we ourselves be as kind, strong & determined as Lee Jaehan. And of course, never give up! The three main characters are just so inspiring. Now, I'm seeing Jo Jinwoong in a totally new light. My heart got all these flutters everytime his scenes came on screen. :) So, thank you guys for recommending Signal again and again. The whole lot of you are the ones that made me want to watch Signal.

I've just (finally) started Misaeng and have watched 3 episodes. You are all right, it is amazing. I'm already sorry to have missed the experience of live watching and sharing the commenting experience esp because I worked in that world most of my professional life, including in offices and factories just like that in Korea, as the customer. So I was on the side making life hell for One International (and also paying the bills), although I never got to put my hand on anyone's butt to test a product LOL.
So it's kind of blowing my mind to be reliving a lot of my work experiences in addition to the drama being fantastic. Thanks to everyone especially MM and Wishful Toki who nudged me over the edge to start watching.

I'm also sorry I missed the experience of live watching and commenting, since Misaeng made me relive a lot of experiences. Even the tiniest of things. I worked in an office for a while, so the fact that many scenes took place in front of a photocopier felt real. I was the photocopier deity of that office - for some reason people never figured out how to use its functions, and I was basically like those interns who did EVERYTHING, except get coffee. I have heard that Introverted Boss is being cut and Chief Kim is being extended. I do not know if either is true. Since IB is a live shoot, it shouldn't be as big an issue. With Scarlet Heart the editing wasn't that extreme (annoying, yes) because the drama wasn't cut...I have no idea how they could do this if they are cutting multiple episodes.

Chief KIm: This is my latest obsession. I watched first episde and put it on hold. I observed the rating and it kept its number one slot and decided to watch it again. I marathoned 8 episodes and now I cannot wait for Wed to come. NGM couldnt be more hilarious. I am totally with him; the more people tried to get at you, be super quadraple more annoying until they get exhausted. And it worked!!! Yoon assistant manager is so pretty. Eonnie and Chief Kim jang-i-da!!!
Voice: Anyone felt the intensity of this drama? I had to stopped multiple time for to breathe. It reminded me so much of Signal. Whenever, I watched these two drama at night, i had to watch other more light drama or variety show to calm me down before I sleep. Or not, i might be hunted by the serial killer in my dream and wet my bed. NOOOO!!!
Hwarang: I watched Hwarang for the sake PHS and PSJ. I felt, the editing and story telling is so jumpy. The emotion simply cannot dig deeper and the scene already changed. I am a person who always loyal to OTP despite of Second Lead Syndrome. But i really hate Aro character. I just can't take how the writer wrote her character. When she was dragged as a Wonhwa shouldn't she be angry rather than weeping? Why she always crying? No physician in this world cried that much. Every single episode. I think Korean Drama era of weak heroin has long passed. Seriously the chemistry between the princess and Dog-bird is more palpable. Why writer - nim? Why?
Tomorrow with You: I love Lee Je HOon. Who wouldnt love him right? But whenever he tried to woo Ma-rin I loath him for that. She was sincere. Having said that, I really cannot tolerate people who assumed. Like her, why cant you simply read the line instead of between the line. Everyone must be aware So Joon female childhood friend probably like him. I wondered if she was the cause of the dissapearance for the couple. Off to watch ep 6 now. Anyeong peeps.

@Izie - totally agree with you on Voice. It is also the single MOST graphically violent k-drama I've ever seen. Maybe I haven't watched the older ones in 1990's and early 2000's but I'm understanding why the Korean censorship bureau is calling Voice for its realistic graphic brutality. And the gore - OMG - the depiction of gore. It really is something else. It doesn't bother me too much because the story is so compelling and Jang Hyk is over the top amazing but this drama could definitely bother people who don't like blood and truly awful violence. Just saying. Be careful where you tread.

What I am watching:
Chief Kim!
That's all. I couldn't really watch multiple dramas at once because 1) I'm afraid I might mixed up the story and characters 2) I always binge-watch (except for Chief Kim, each episode is a feel-good one, the one that makes you think "Ahh I need a good laugh today, gotta watch Chief Kim!"
And well, I just finished Weighlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, and don't feel like watching another romantic-comedy drama yet since WFKBJ set the bars too high (Will start watching another romcom once my hype is over) I was just looking for a casual, light and comedy series when I found Chief Kim, and it just clicked for me.

I'm experiencing a K-drama slump right now so I have been watching (old) J-dramas recently. I'm so attracted to Kimura Takuya right now (15 years late). It's so amazing how good looking he is!!! He is the combination of all the good looking East Asian celebs!!! I can see Won Bin, Jerry Yan, Lee Min Ho, Huang Xiaoming, Chen Bolin to even Nam Joo Hyuk in him!!! (I'm serious, his boyish grin in his early dramas just remind me of Nam Joo Hyuk so much).
Okay, anyways, I have completed Hero (2001), Hero SP (2006), Hero Movie (2007), Hero 2 (2014), Hero 2 Movie (2015) in a span of 4 days with presentations and mid terms. And I have finished Love Generation (1997) and Pride (2004) last week too. I'm currently watching Good Luck (2003). Dang, I just cannot get enough of his good looks.
After finishing the old J-dramas, I realised they are still very watchable in today's age and time. There is minimal generation gap and the fashion is still acceptable. I can totally understand why J-dramas swept across Asia in the nineties. On the other hand, old K-dramas are less 'watchable' and there is a very evident generation gap. I tried to watch Proposal (1997) and Kim Hee Sun's lips just looked like she was poisoned and the drama set looked extremely dated and fake. K-dramas become more and more watchable in the 2000s when the cinematography improved leaps and bounds.
Let me shout this again "KIMURA TAKUYAAAAAAAA!!!" *fangirl mode ON*. And I love Hero (2001) so much!!! It's extremely addictive and every single character in the prosecutor team is memorable!!! Since I have just been introduced this genre (more like I ditched this genre for other genres for years), I can tell you which drama is a good introduction to J-dramas. I started off with From Five to Nine, and then We're Married as a Job, and then Pride. It was Pride which made me fall in love with Kimura Takuya, and then I started to watch all of his Hero series.

I shall add to your fangirling-
did you know he is in a drama that is ongoing now?
My colleague recommended it- It's called A life- Itoshiki Hito. Its a medical drama. she said it's good! I haven't watched yet because Jdrama subs are more unreliable and the wait can be agonising.
But just thought you should know ;)
I may be starting it soon since there are a couple of episodes subbed already.

Regarding Laurel Tree Tailors, I agree, they could have wrapped this show up 20 episodes ago.
My wife and I dropped it about 3 weeks ago. Our favorite couple was Dong Sook and Sung Joon oppa.

Rebel: I love that its taking its time to get to the hero's vigilante adventures. We're six episodes in and we still haven't even had any interaction between OTP. But you know what, why rush? We've got 24 more eps to go, on this journey and bonus points for non weepy backstory of righteous, downtrodden parents, unjustly killed. Mmba, absent!
PS: I can't believe our only glimpse of OTP was she administering a hot slap to him and he shooting at her WITH A FLAMING ARROW! Okay, 'flaming' was my addition but you grab the gist, even enemies take longer before confrontation.
Movie The Handmaiden:
This is my first outing from all major players;
Director Park Chang Wook
Ha Jung Woo
Kim Min Hee
Jo Jin Woong
Kim Tae Ri
Wow, what a gorgeous movie. The set, impeccable detail, the art and cinematography is wonderful and the OST and the end, when the credits role is simultaneously soothing and haunting.
Jo Jin Woong was so perverted, creepy old man, the Bastard!!
Kim Min Hee was delicate, brittle and dubiously steely. I wish Shin Min Ah took this kind of roles. She's certainly capable, see Naked Kitchen.
Kim Tae Ri reminded me soooo much of Lee Yu Bi in Gu Family Book. The girlishness and fierceness. I kept on thinking that this could have been Lee Yu Bi *lights a candle for Lee Yu Bi's career*. Not that I was unsatisfied with Kim Tae Ri's performance. There were so many times she went head to head with Ha Jung Woo and she more than held her own. I kinda like their relationship, they loathe each other. And finally,
Ha Jung Woo. I've heard about him so much, and commented once or twice on his handsomeness. This was my chance to see him in action. The man is a dashing devil!! Chai!! I didn't thing 'charming' and 'smarmy' could go together but, he did it. I want to see more of him. I want to see him with...all my favourite actresses. I started pairing him with Jeon Do Yeon and Jeon Ji Hyun but it escalated to Gong Hyo Jin, Shin Min Ah, Lee Yo Won, Lee Bo Young etc lol.

I'd add the art director Ryu Seong-hee to the list. His contribution to the film made it a great success. Ryu is the first Korean to win the Vulcan Award in Cannes.
I'm another Ha Jung-woo fangirl. He is just the best! He should be on the very top favorite of every K-movie fans.
You should check out his movies with some of your favorite actresses.
Madeleine with Shin Min Ah (his first movie)
My Dear Enemy with Jeon Do-yeon. He also played her bodyguard in the drama "Lovers in Prague."
Love Fiction with Gong Hyo-jin
Assassination with Jeon Ji Hyun
If you haven't seen "The Chaser" you should watch it. This was his breakout movie.
He is currently the most sought after actor in Chungmuro so I don't think he'd do a drama in the future. He is going into directing too with two films under his belt so far.

So he DID act with my Dave's. my, he sure does get around lol.
I'm so happy the art director was acknowledged. It was stunning! Everything from the posters, that tree scene, where she's just hanging there with a blank expression is one of the memorable scenes of the movie.
Will make more effort to catch up on Ha Jung Woo's catalogue.

Ryu Seong-hee has been working with the best in the industry. Most of the biggest ( critical acclaim and top grossing) films in Chungmuro has her name on it.
Production Designer/Art Director for Oldboy, Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother, Thirst, The Attorney, Ode to My Father, The Front Line , Assassination, A Bittersweet Life etc etc.
Looking forward to her next project.

So a sister who can understand my predicament (lol).
My dear, I was just going around the DVD stores and came across it..Internet access is difficult for me too. That's why I'm largely a Marathon watcher. My school's yeye WiFi is not helping matters.

I watch Missing 9, Chief Kim, Voice, and Tomorrow With You in my weekly agenda. I love Chief Kim with all of his antics -even the way he walks. I know "Missing Nine" has some potholes, but I'm just curious how this show will end it, like how to bring down Tae Ho. That's all. "Voice" is OK for me although it's too brutal since the first episode. And, "Tomorrow with You", I can't believe Lee Je-Hoon can be so lovey-dovey. Oh, my heart can't take it.
I have several deadlines coming up this week. But, it's really hard to delay watching drama. The more I restrain, the more I want to watch them. Drama is my happy pills. Regardless of those deadlines, I also started watching "City Hally" (12/20) and "Tunnel."

Currently watching:
Tomorrow With You: I didn't like episode 1 but after that the drama appears to have found its footing and leads me to think it knows where it's going. So I trust it for now. But what to do about this constant pit in my stomach whenever I watch it?? Everything appears ominous. Also girlfriday- yes.
Hwarang: I just have this on when I'm doing chores/errands/assignments. The only good scenes are hen Yoseop's song comes on because it means something bromance-y is happening. Ah-ro's character is unbearable. And there is absolutely no substance in this drama. I'm just waiting for the last two episodes so I can see Jinheung take the throne.
Currently rewatching:
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo: I know it's a little soon to be doing this twice- but the first time I wast fast-forwarding through so many scenes just to get to the cuteness between the two leads. Now that I'm watching it in its entirety- I'm totally head over heels for Bok Joo's character.
Oldies at the top of my wait list:
City Hunter
My Wife's Having an Affair This Week
Moonlight Drawn by Clouds
Not sure what to start... They're all so different!

Watching...
Hwarang: Curse you, writer, for writing a good beginning and getting me invested in the drama.
Chief Kim: my midweek dose of laughter, sunshine, and optimism
Tomorrow with You: so beautiful, it makes my heart ache and tears come to my eyes. So bummed about the ratings
Watching in passing because my mom is watching it:
Introverted Boss: are they trying to make WooIl sympathetic?
My Princess. SSH needs to do another rom com, maybe with established actresses like Kim Hee sun or choi Ji Woo.

Rebel: Best! Best! Best! Well, the intensity did die down after the kids are grown up and dad is slowly stepping into the sideline but gosh, what's gonna happen next week?
Introverted Boss: This week is so cute! It is kinda true that Boss suddenly became less shy...how did that happen? Oh wells, at least Hwan Ki is hella cute and the female lead is less annoying now.
Hwarang: You have gotten be kidding me! It's already episode 18 and there's only 2 more episodes to go? It feels like there's so many story that got nowhere. Everywhere, Ah-Ro gets captured somehow and now *this* happens, oh great.
Chief Kim: I haven't watched this week's episode yet...about to dive in...right now.
Missing 9: I'm still stuck on episode 4 lmao. Been busy.
