Beans of Wisdom from the future
by DB Staff
This week in Beans of Wisdom…
Michykdrama voices a complaint in “Voice: Episode 8” comment #13:
This episode made me feel a bit conflicted. Because some parts had me annoyed like the ridiculous way Jin Hyuk took down the 100000 bad guys after just having been beaten half to death…. using a PEN to stab them as well! Pen of steel? Not to mention him not going to the hospital after….
DramaFan replies:
I suddenly pictured JH going “I got a pen, I got an apple” lol but anyway someone told me on TW that he used a small knife that he drew from his jacket.
Joyee shares wisdom from another kdrama in “Good-for-nothing Yoon Shi-yoon in Romance Full of Life” comment #16:
I’ve watched the first color (white) The Universe’s Star. The story telling is good & aside from romance they also give emphasis on its life lessons:
– Never miss a chance saying the things you want to say to the people you love because you will never know when will be the last
-Being a star to someone that shines on their darkest moment is enough to let them know that you treasure them even the day comes when they’re unnoticeable or gone.
In #8 of “Hwarang: Episode 17,” Germeze writes:
I wish, wish, wish this show would have been about the relationships between hwarang, how they became an amazing fighting force and supported the king on his rise to the throne. But no it’s about Ah Ro getting put in harm’s way.
Kalends:
Agree. It’s called Hwarang, after all, and not “The Multiple Rescues of Aro”.
WishfulToki:
‘Fated to Rescue You’
Dal:
Other title suggestion:
Answer Me AhRo
Fated To Save You
Chief AhRo
Weighlifting AhRo
Legend Of Stupid AhRo
Tomorrow With Ahro
AhRo: Dansel who have to be save
While Kiara reaches a milestone in #11:
I’ve never wanted to meet a grim reaper in real life who could erase memories of bad sageuks until this show. Thanks a lot KBS.
WishfulToki:
It is a real shame, but at least Park Hyung Sik looks good in mane of glory. I’ll ask the reaper to let me keep that memory.
Del is on to the production team in #15.1:
Aro is also another greatly dis-serviced character in this drama. I came to the conclusion she is the main prop. The director could not find a tree to shoot the arrow, get Aro. Could not find a gold to rob, kidnap Aro. No budget to find an extra to be threatened for a kill, get Aro. It’s like Hwarang was established to save Aro.
Lord Cobol asks in “Hwarang: Episode 18” comment #11.2:
But, are we really 100% sure Ah-ro is dead? She sure seemed like it, but we didn’t get the requisite dramatic last words, and it is a kdrama after all. They’re quite capable of having the arrow miss her heart, or having her wear some hidden (and form-fitting) armor, perhaps because the princess warned her(??). I haven’t gone preview-scouting, so I’m might well be full of it.
redfox:
it would be a better twist if she came back as a zombie, it would justify why I am feeling like my brains are being sucked out by the drama.
Sicarius:
I’d watch that drama. Zombie Sageuk! Has that happened yet? And if not, WHY not.
Lord Cobol:
This show has replaced Cinderella and K2 as the show most fun to make fun of
But… aren’t kdramas (and American TV) *supposed* to suck your brains out?
Sicarius:
I think the thing is, they don’t have to? E.g. I’ve watched some bloody good dramas in the few years I’ve been watching them, one’s I would happily say are good TV shows, and that rarely happens, so I think when yet another show falls into the hole and leaves us disappointed but not surprised, we wish it could’ve been more because we KNOW it has happened, that show that leaves you feeling satisfied. So we keep watching in hopes that it will happen again. Just that… the likely hood is about 1 in 10 for me
And kd6606 adds to the pile of questions about this show (#53):
Ok, maybe something is lost in translation but I don’t get this.
[…]
3. If someone was trying t o kill Sun-woo and got the girl instead, then why don’t they just shoot again at him while he busy crying over her. Typical drama ploy but what about getting everyone to safety first before you start wailing….
Nee:
3. The guard was so confident with his archery skill that he only brought one arrow.
Saner is reeling from the beanies’ predictions in “Tomorrow With You: Episode 3.” She writes in comment #3.1:
I’m beginning to suspect some of our beanies have time travelling methods that we’re not aware of…My jaw DROPPED when I read the part in his recap, immediately thinking “But how could they know!?”
To be fair, there’s a lot of methods – incense sticks, rain, mysterious monk’s talisman, hormonal portals, moon eclipses (dangerous and risky methods! Stay away from cliffs and drowning pools my dear beanies!) the subway….
C’mon guys, spill! How’re you doing it? Sharing is caring! ^_~
Storeybrooke:
Perhaps with each bite of Subway, beanies transport to future drama world
skelly:
This whole show is actually based on the writer’s misunderstanding. The producers told the writer, “the story is all about travelling through time via Subway” and the writer assumed “subway.”
But back to the question at hand… I don’t give Six Flying Dragons replies:
Yes Saner, we can TOTALLY time travel.
Its a complicate process that involves altars to the early Hong sisters, background music from 1997 and curiously enough a peer reviewed paper on the existential contradiction that is Boys over flowers, the best AND worst show ever.
While in “Tomorrow With You: Episode 4,” Alyyy points out this potentially awesome fact in comment #25:
March 25, 2019 is their anticipated death and the last episode of the drama is on March 25 too. So tvN planned this all along. rofl i am random they’re playing with us
Nina shares a lesson learned from the antagonist in “Defendant: Episode 8” comment #3:
Apart from Min-ho being maniac, whole drama I was thinking that he definitely is smart and he really works hard, so maybe if he did the same thing before his killing spree his dad would love him more + let him marriy Yeon hee =he would have no reason killing Sun Ho or anyone else.
My conclusion as a student was that I have no time to relax and before I start killing peope I better study, because later no metter what I’ll do I’ll never fully get the life I want
Speaking of killing, “Missing 9: Episode 9” could use some help in that department. berries writes in comment #1:
plot seems to be: tae ho and his killing sprees…
Chiisan:
Honestly when he showed up to the boat party, I was enraged. This guy is harder to kill than a radioactive cockroach zombie.
Serpent continues in #4:
Seriously Tao Oh is a big mutthafkng cockroach everytime he survives. No matter how many times hes out he manages to come up top. The more things are revealed about him the more I hate him.
People really need to take a class: how to murder someone 101 everybody just keeps surviving. Even the most experienced killer Tae Ho with a kill count of 4 at the moment miserably fails to kill when he wants to. He should try to fight with the intention not to kill maybe he will then accidentally kill people it already happend 2 times ( maybe 3 dont know about the reporter but even that looked like an accident).
Tae Ho come on why don’t u go for the neck or the heart i’m disappointed in you. Its either the stomach or the arm. They should at least give some scars to his face with all the injuries.
Even the president of Legend entertainment couldn’t kill the former president properly . I wont even be suprised if Yeol is alive.
Kiara writes a reincarnation scenario in comment #17 of “Backhugs and schoolgirl crushes on Strong Woman Do Bong-soon”:
I was wondering where Pa-oh disappeared to but I guess he followed his king here.
gadis:
I think he is secretly thrilled at the prospect of his former king trying ve~~ry hard to win his favor because of his daughter. Reborn as a potential Father-in-law is definitely a great thing.
transient:
I bet Pa-Oh wished for that really, really hard.
Though I wonder how he feels to see his beloved king beaten to a pulp by a girl.
While Lime Chilli sums up our impatience feelings about the show in comment #34:
I CANNOT wait for this to start! Please be good, you already tick all the right boxes to have me fall in love with you!
– Park Hyung Sik male lead (ie/get the girl in kdrama, most of the time), check
– Park Bo Young, Nation’s Little Sister, check
– Ji Soo without sideburns, check
– Supernatural (strength), check
– cute love triangle, check
– plucky heroine beating the bad guys, check
– unintentionally intentional body contact whilst practising martial art, check
– tall tall TALL heroes with the cutest little heroine height difference, check
– unrequited 1st love, potential as cause for jealousy, check
– bromance in the BTS and hopefully in the story, check
– catchy earworm of a theme song, check
– funny plot line and 3 leads that we know can act, checkAnd now I find out there’s gonna be co-habitation hijinks as well?! I am so gonna love you. Please don’t be a match made in Tinder and only give me false hopes and Subway sandwiches!
manam makes a good point for not buying Woo-il’s sobstory. She writes in “Introverted Boss: Episode 8” comment #10:
Interesting to see how we watch the same show and see such different things. Some folks find Woo Il appealing. I’m somewhere between sick to my stomach and in a rage.
No matter what, he’s the one who pushed himself onto Roo Won’s sister and when he was caught, he didn’t just deny it, he blamed her. Never mind how he’s fed into Hwan Ki’s fears all these year.
Just because you’re broken doesn’t mean you have the right to break others.
Someone (or something) made a comeback in “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Episode 6.” nchoe jogs our memory in comment #1:
Omo, it’s the magical sageuk cliff again!!!
Just jump and take a leap of faith Gil-dong ah. It’s perfectly safe (the survival rate has been 100% so far) and you’ll come back stronger than ever.
theIgorot:
Is this the famed ‘Lee Joon Ki cliif’?
PakalanaPikake:
It is indeed the very same Sageuk Cliff of Non-Doom, which apparently has a very busy agent representing it. It puts in an appearance near the end of episode 2 of SAIMDANG as well.
crazyahjummafan:
It’s also the same the magical one where the main lead played by Jang Geun Suk (forgot the character’s name) in Jackpot, fell with a knife wound and multiple broken bones….AND made it back alive! Walking and moving perfectly like nothing had happened to him at all!
I wonder if it’s still magical in modern times? If so, it could be a money-making industry and really help Korea out of their economic slump. You know, people with broken bones and knife/gun wounds pay to leap off the cliff, and hey, come out of the water better than when they went in. Those watching also have to pay to watch and take photos and videos.
Lord Cobol:
Sigh.
When someone is badly injured in kdrama-land, why bother with doctors & hospitals? Just find a cliff, check that there is water below, and toss them over.
Read more about the bloody history of this cliff here. And see you next week for more beans of wisdom!

I had to use a site called Dramagoblin, since it isn't posted on any of the sites I typically use yet. I like what I see so far.

What we know from any Dramaland is that important roles (including the villains) DO NOT die easily. Will there be any plot left if they did die since they are important to the plot?
But of cos as opposite to real life, humans are easy to die though. So do not watch and try them out at your own risk !! ;)

From the zombie Ahro I remembered watching something like that on Secret Investigation Records. That show was so good. I don't remember in detail but that show was really good. The first tvN drama to impress me.

Also called Joseon X-Files.
YES. It was not just good. It was brilliant. As brilliant as Signal. I LOVED it. And it's only 12 episodes. Wish there were more. It's rated very high on DB too.

I bet sageuk characters are totally bored by now from folks always tumbling from a cliff. their life would be so much more interesting with Ferris wheels, skyscrapers and parking houses. maybe there should be a sageuk where all they ever do is push someone / jump down from high places and give points for the fall.

Btw isn't the Cliff of Non-Doom also appeared in Mandate of Heaven when Lee Dong Wook was chased by bad guys? If so.. then the Cliff is perfectly safe for everyone and they'll comeback as healthy as ever!
Truck of Doom must learn a lot from this old Sunbae, Cliff of Non-Doom that apparently exists for more than 1000 years.

I really like Hwarang, it made me look forward to the beginning of the week ad was very lighthearted. That drama made me laugh all the time, I love it definitely one of my favorites. I am going to have to watch more sageuks, because I haven't watched a lot yet. I loved the bromance!
