SBS to adapt Moon/Sun, Sungkyunkwan author’s newest novel

The Moon That Embraces the Sun and Sungkyunkwan Scandal were both highly successful drama adaptations that were based on author Jung Eun-kwol’s novels, so it’s no wonder that SBS snapped up the rights to the author’s most recent work, called Hong Chun-gi. The new novel is another fanciful reimagining of history set in Joseon, much in the same vein as the two previous works, and the adaptation rights were scooped up right away after the book was published earlier this month.

The fusion sageuk is set in the early 15th century and tells the story of the only female painter in Joseon, named Hong Chun-gi, who is mentioned only briefly in historical record. The novel imagines her colorful life story as a beautiful painter who enters the palace and shares lovelines with a blind astronomer and arts enthusiast Grand Prince Anpyeong, third son of King Sejong.

Hong Chun-gi’s mother once prayed to the heavens to send a suitor down for her daughter to marry, and one day when a strikingly beautiful young man falls from the sky right in front of her, she believes he’s been sent from the heavens just for her. Pfft, I like her already. The young man, named Ha Ram, is nearly blind due to an accident during a rain ceremony, and can only see the color red. He holds a position in the palace as an astronomer, and after meeting Hong Chun-gi, he discovers that there’s a larger mystery surrounding his eyes.

It’s described as a story about the ardent love and the cheerful life of Hong Chun-gi, which sounds like a nice mix of Moon/Sun’s earnest romance and Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s bright sensibility. At least I hope that’s the winning combination that drama producers are going for.

SBS has begun pre-production on Hong Chun-gi, which is being planned for a 2018 broadcast. That is EONS away, SBS.

It would be nice if they cast moon chae won.. She has enough experience with saeguk projects (painter of the wind, war of arrow and the Princess man) she can carry on her shoulder. the most important things she's definitely a painter, she was studying arts Western paintings major.

What is this novel about? I thought the whole Sun/Moon Pokemon was a total screw up. They didn't even follow the original novel.

Moon Che Won needs a decent comeback. She's much better in Sageuk, and yeah, Kim So Hyun (the guy version) is overrated.

I love them both but, um, Ji-soo kind of sucks at sageuk speech.

I'd rather have the Ji-soo/Eunji-as-first-leads reunion be in a modern-day drama, I've been praying for it since like the middle of Sassy Go Go (tvN or JTBC, step up please!)

I second you.
Sigh, I really hope Eunji will sign with tvN. Been craving to watch her in that channel again.
I don't know why, but I feel that her management tends to play save by signing with KBS, it's two times already. Of course I'm not complaining about Sassy, it's one wonderful drama, but it's just not enough to see her in that short production. It obviously sounds selfish, but I want her to comeback with different challenge, different vibe. Someone needs to give her more opportunities.

I think her casting in Sassy Go Go had more to do with the fact that one of the PDs had already worked with her in Trot Lovers - it's quite likely they specifically asked for her after the role was turned down by Kim Yoo-jung, rather than her management.

And as an afterthought, something equally important:

I vote for NO adult-minor love lines. Either via casting decisions or the respective ages of the characters. It's a fetish that creeps us out.

And may the writer learn from Park Ji Eun, who's taking everyone to school on how to incorporate an idol into a drama. In this case, how about writing-in a doe-eyed princeling who was rendered mute in the same accident as the Astronomer?

Required fields are marked *

I love Nam Joo Hyuk in WLKBJ, and I do agree he can be the main lead, as long as his partner someone who acts better than her. Someone at the level of Lee Sung Kyung or better.

Im sorry to say this, if he is to be paired with someone like Seo Hyun like in Scarlet Heart, and they are the main leads, i'm afraid it will not turn out good.

it should be " someone who acts better than him"

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm in agreement here - he held up his end fairly well in Scarlet Heart but he is not at the level where he can compensate for a costar's weakness.

Def. needs someone at least on the Lee Sung-kyung/Kim Seul-gi level to match him. Maybe Nam Ji-hyun?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

He was paired with KSG in Surpluss Princess right? I almost forgot.

And yes I'm up to see Nam Joo Hyuk in any leading roles with a condition his co-star lady is better than him..

0

Dunno...I might be blinded by the adoration that I have for him these days, but certainly he is displaying talent and serious charm that not every 20yr old out there in kdramas is able to deliver (except for Park Bo Gum, who can do anything of course :P ). Taking into account that he is also quite new to acting, I find his performance in WF something not to be sniffed at. :)
If we talk about attracting viewers, I agree that a bland female lead could ruin the show, but this can happen to any good actor. Also the writing is very important. Right now, for example, I cannot bring myself to watch LOTBS, even when I like JJH and LMH a lot, but the story (and the chemistry) leaves me cold so there is not enough star power or charisma to keep me watching.
I do not mind Nam Joo Hyuk taking up secondary characters as long as they are meaty roles. But certainly I expect him to keep growing as an actor and be given more opportunities to shine in the future :D

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think why we love him more because his role in WLKBJ.

I also loved him in Surpluss Princess & CITT, and after SH maybe he can carry serious role as well.

Good writing + good acting are two main components. With a good writing, the bad acting maybe can be covered here and there, but bad writing + bad acting? Moreover, we can count just how many drama really has good writing, so at least with good acting, can save drama little bit. That's why I always choose good acting although good plot is still my first preference.

0

nam joo hyuk is not able to be more than being a nice guy-not harm with god script, cause he can't shine at all in performance,
definitely second lead material

also almost all except the girl in WF is underperformed, mediocre actors with mediocre drama, passable but not great

Ji Soo is quite too young to take such a role for a drama like this. Someone who has done many historical dramas should take the role like lee Jun ki cos he knows a lot and is more experienced and is also a great actor. I agree, I love him and he's fantastic in sageuk but even I need a break from seeing him in sageuk garb. Lol. I think it's his comfort zone so that's why he keeps going for it. He needs to do a movie or two in different genres and recover from his slump before making anither sageuk comeback. I don't think we hav. Anything to worry about here since I think this drama is most likely to cast younger.

I don't think it's his comfort zone, he just gets a lot of offers for sageuk genre dramas, probably with more interesting characters. He has already done 2 movies in contemporary genres this year, a Chinese romance movie and Resident Evil.

I second you on this.
It's not likely he took on those sageuk roles because it is his comfort zone. Even in his recent fan meeting, he did mentioned how he still received so many sageuk role offers and I bet, less roles in modern dramas. With modern drama, I don't think he has that many roles to select, and that was why he went for sageuk.
Why so many actors like Kim Rae Won, Jo Jung Suk, Park Hae Jin, Lee Jong Suk, Kim Woo Bin never done sageuk and keep on doing modern drama yet never gets the complaint?

Reminds me of Song Il Gook in that regard. So many Saeguks

Jo Jung-suk has been in two back to back sageuk movies. The Face Reader and The Fatal Encounter.

0

Jo Jung-suk and Lee Jong-suk were in "The Face Reader" together which is a sageuk movie. Kim Rae-won tried a fantasy sageuk way back in 1999 in an obscure "Hometown Legends" drama special so the list of actors you named isn't entirely accurate. Gong Hyo-jin is someone who hasn't done sageuk yet.

Here is Kim Rae-won's sageuk.

I think Lee Jun-ki should go back to Chungmuro. His breakout was from films but he hasn't done a Korean film in almost a decade. I don't think sageuks are Lee Jun-ki's comfort zone either, but some of his biggest hits were sageuks so he's been associated with them in a way.

@Dopefish

I have been saying that about Lee Jun-ki for years. He needs to go back to Chungmuro. Nothing in dramaland will top King and the Clown. His acting has improved a lot but he has been in bad dramas. He is already popular, he just needs some quality projects.
I think he would have a movie career by now if he went back after the army.

I'm not a Yoo Ah-in fan-girl but I think YAI has made some great choices in taking the movie route and I hope he'd do more movies when he gets back from his military service.

I'm hoping Song Joong-ki will stick with Chungmuro till he has a solid movie career.

Jo Jung-suk is doing great at juggling a movie career and still have time for dramas and theatre. He is great with all 3 and I'm very impressed.
I have a soft spot for stage actors and he is one of my favorites. He is so worth fan-girling over.

He said before ML and reiterated after ML that he was going to do a contemporary next. I would be really surprised if he took on another historical. Also, he said he still gets offered a lot of sajeuk scripts...like all the time. I think his contemporary options are more limited, and in the past he hasn't seemed as interested in straight romance type dramas which can generally be popular. Reading between the lines....I think he finds them boring. Suck it up LJG...I want a romance heavy drama (well written if you can find one) Ha!

The 7 kisses, no matter how many times they call it as a drama...it isn't, it is an extended CF.

I guess he is too synonym with sageuk that those writers/ production team would automatically think of him whenever sageuk is concerned.
He said (during the fan meeting and get together watching last episode of ML) that he received mostly sageuk offers and though tempted, he is determined to do a modern drama next. But I do understand his situation. It is hard to choose when the choices are so limited and you are right, he did said in Healing Camp of how he is uncomfortable with romance genre and he did a lot of action centric drama because he wanted to distant himself from the pretty boy image which been following him since The King and The Clown.

I think 7 first kisses us a fulfilment of his next drama being a contemporary. He's just a great actor who does justice to historical dramas. Yes he has done so many historical dramas but what if those are the major offers he gets he can't just go and tell the producers of a contemporary drama that he wants a role. Scarlet Heart was a big hit for him. Except for the poor female lead. He can act almost anything you give him to. This drama would be perfect. Who won't want to see a blind Lee Jun ki as a prince and astronomer.

Agree! woobin and sora are one of my idea drama pairings. But, I've better wished that they will do a modern drama together. Not in sageuks. I don't think kim woo bin is suited in sageuks. And as a blind astronomer?? Oh no I can't even imagine.

Kim Woo-bin is such a promising actor. He keeps challenging himself by doing different kind of roles in movies and dramas. I respect him for that.

I'm curious to see him Sageuk. I hope he'll consider to do one someday.

I would love any of the following:

Yeo Jin Gu
Moon Geun Young
Kim Seul Gi
Yoon Doo Joon

Given that none of them will probably be offered the roles, I'd just really appreciate two leads who can act well. Even better if they're really talented and lesser known. I love seeing fresher faces onscreen.

I would love to see Song Joong Ki as the astronomer. His saeguk is excelent and he has proved he does fusion well too (it's what rose him to fame, after all).

For female lead, I would have say Kim Ji Won but maybe descendants is too recent in people minds for that.

Shin Minah could be a really good pair too.

Interesting, even though I don't like the Joseon styles, but I liked "The Moon Embraces the Sun", and if it weren't for the absolutely terrible/wooden acting of the female lead TMETS might have become a favorite of mine despite its historical setting.

So I hope that whoever they cast for this drama, will be at least decent in the acting-department. I also hope that there will be enough skinship and kisses to carry a 20 or 16 ep drama. Most importantly, I hope that the story-line will be good, well-executed, and not boring.

Speaking of historical dramas, I would like to say that "Hwarang" continues to exceed my expectations, so far. So I am being optimistic about it, and hope that it won't disappoint me later on.

Wait, I have some confusion here. The male leads are a blind astronomer and a prince, right ? Or a prince that is a blind astronomer or I'm not in my right mind and read it wrong ?

I think it's three different people: blind astronomer, prince, and the official male lead who is also slightly blind/ can only see red

The leading roles are three: the girl who is a painter, the blind astronomer , and the prince

O_O I thought it was one person. So, already love triangle *sigh*

But wait, how can a blind person be an astronomer? Wouldn't one need sight in order to read the stars? Or maybe he has an apprentice who does the seeing and he does the interpretation.

From the little plot we know already it says that she's going to share lovelines between the blind astronomer and arts enthusiast who is the prince. The blind astronomer can only see the color red. So there are two male leads and one female lead. The blind astronomer the prince and the female painter. These just reminds me of Scarlet Heart with iu dancing between the 4th and 8th prince. I hope the love triangle won't be as poor as that

Sounds really good... But "Only Joseon era female painter?" What about Shin Saimdang? She was a female painter too (and a poet).
To be honest, I was not "in love" with either of the previous adaptations from this author. They were just OK in my book.
Right now, based on your description, I cannot think of an actor who can play this role. Please God, not Kim So Hyun - He is so over-rated. So is the actress Kim So Hyun - I am so tired of seeing her everywhere. Please - not them.

Right now, the only young actor I can think of who can probably nail the male character is Yeo Jin-Goo. (Well, maybe Baro too.) If he is chosen, I hope they give him a decent leading lady - Go Ah-Sung, Kim Go-Eun, Yoon So-Hee, Kim Sae-Ron, Kim Yoo-Jung would all be great for the female role.

Same here. I didn't care much for either show but the young actors were great.

Yeo Jin-goo is unbeatable in sageuks. He is perfection!
I would love to see some of my indie girls in a sageuk like Go Ah-sung. I haven't seen her in anything since Grapevine.

I think the word 'overrated' is overrated! Overexposed maybe?

Kim So Hyun had her first full length leading role in a modern drama. So she still might be a possibility.

Kim Soo Hyun has been absent since Producers and Moon/Sun was back in 2012. Heard he was shooting sine real movie thats taking forever to come out.

I don't know my own dream pairing but I like some that were mentioned.

This is exciting because I like the novelist. The source material is always fun despite what the drama outcome turns out to be. I want them to cast this the way they casted Sunkyungkwan scandal though, young and upcoming actors with not too much exposure but enough to know they have acting chops. That's what made sunkyunkwan special ( in addition to the PD). Moon Sun kinda fell backward with the casting of the older leads. I couldn't care for anyone except the the two male leads.

If they're going for an older cast, I would love to see Jang Hee Jin with either Joo Won or Lee Ji Hoon again. As for a younger cast, I would love to see Kim So Hyun in a historical drama again. I'm not sure who would match her exactly because I don't want to see her with an idol nor a pretty boy.

Hmm both The Moon That Embraces the Sun and Sungkyunkwan Scandal casted a male lead that wasnt famous for theur sageuk prowess.
Rather than wondering about the cast, im thinking who will helm as driector and scriptwriter. The elements in both novels are to my liking. And currently the sypnopsis for this one is really interesting too. I root for the blind astronomer already.
Since the title of the show centres on the guy i hope they cast a really good actress who CAN act. Drama gods listen to our fervent prayer. I need another good casting just like Ruler of the mask.

Can we just get Gong Yoo to be in it? I mean, I atleast wanted to see him in a sageuk drama once.. Oh God, I can actually imagine how good he would look in the joseon sageuk garb.. Gaaaaaaaaaaah..

But then, if he wanted to be in the drama, can they choose atleast someone who is not too young and actually can act decently in period drama...
