Blockbuster zombie thriller Train to Busan to get Hollywood remake
by tineybeanie
The blockbuster movie Train to Busan is getting remade by major global production company, Studio Gaumont. The film premiered last July to great success: It was immensely popular domestically, and remains the highest grossing South Korean film of 2016, with more than 11 million people flocking to see it in theaters.
Starring Gong Yoo (The Lonely Shining Goblin) as a single dad, the movie unfolds while he takes his daughter to his ex-wife’s home, and a zombie horde invades the train they’re on and proceeds to infect everyone in its path.
On Wednesday, Studio Gaumont obtained the creative rights to develop an English version of the film with hopes to make a big splash in Hollywood. Although Studio Gaumont primarily produces French-language projects, it has participated in the making of several notable English-language films, such as Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element.
The primary investor for Train to Busan, NEW Company’s CEO Kim Woo-taek, said, “I’m happy to be collaborating with the best French film studio, Gaumont, that has had a record of success with various international productions. Through this opportunity, I hope that Korean movies will gain more exposure with international audiences.” Not to be bested in effusive praise, a delegate from Gaumont said that everyone fell in love with Train to Busan at the 69th Cannes Film Festival, and that its uniqueness would resonate with American audiences.
Since the deal just took place yesterday, a schedule regarding the remake’s production and any casting decisions have yet to be made.

It's all about money. Americans can read subtitles like the rest of the world.
If they want real exposure then do it with Korean actors, writers and all.

Studio Gaumont is remaking it for Hollywood like they did with "The Professional" etc. That's means they are going to use Hollywood actors etc.

...except the star of the Professional was French, and the child cast with him was a completely unknown girl. Natalie Portman might be "hollywood" now, but she wasn't then

Jean Reno was French but the rest were from Hollywood. Reno doesn't do only french movies, he has done a lot of Hollywood film. Fifth Elements were all Hollywood actors.

The majority of the American viewing public can't be bothered with subs (for many, too difficult to keep up).
That's why foreign language films do so poorly in the US on a per capita basis (only do relatively well in large cities like NYC, Chicago, LA).

Couldn't have said it better myself. There's no reason to make a remake. All you need are subs. It's actually so demeaning to say "Oh, nice movie. We'll remake it our way; thanks for the plot."

People in general are not fond of subtitles. For us kdrama fans it's about as natural as can be. I actually even turn on english subtitles on english movies that I watch because I keep looking for something to read while watching. lol

I'll be honest, it took some adjusting when I first started watching dramas to be able to process the subtitles and visuals at the same time. But after about two episodes, I was fine. All it really takes is a small amount of effort. If Americans were just more open to foreign/non-western media in general, they'd realize how much they're missing out.
Discovering dramas was like opening up a pandora's box when I was getting sick of American TV. Restricting yourself to media that's only in your own language really limits your choices.

Yes, but dramas are slow. In a fast paced film, it's incredibly hard to keep up with dialogue and action sometimes, especially if you're not a fast reader. And as fans, we've learned a lot of cultural terms. I find Korean and Japanese films and dramas easy to follow because I'm past the initial learning curve. I'm much less likely to see a film in Spanish or Norwegian. There are films made in dozens of languages, each with its own cultural trappings. The casual movie goer might be a foreign film watcher of one or two languages, but not all of them. That means that even if a lot of Americans would watch foreign films, that doesn't mean they'd all watch in every language.
Think about it - Korea and Japan releases a lot of English films, but a lot of them are dubbed, and that's just Hollywood. I never saw their theaters doing wide releases of German films or Chinese films. Or Israeli films, Spanish films, Tagalog films ect. And in the Japanese theaters I went to, most of the the showings for any American films (2 out of 3) were dubbed. So....a lot of at least Japanese movie goers didn't like subtitles either.
So limited releases make sense, as do remakes. I'm sure Korean teens COULD have watched Hana Yori Dango -it *is* a Japanese story - but instead it was remade as Boys over Flowers with all korean actors set in a korean higg school because producers knew they could make more money that way. *Shrug* that's the way it works. For all film industries.

I have never minded subtitles, nobody mind in this part of the world, we always get subtitled films here, it would be weird and unfair to deaf people as well, if there were none. we would have to be on some heavy drugs if we thought they were too fast to read, no, wait, then it would be the contrary they´d be on slow mo. in fact, it was annoying that on the last Black Nights Film Festival most films didnt have subs or only english. we need three languages here.

You stole my words. What's the point of even seeing it without Gong Yoo?
One of the primary reasons of this being a blockbuster was, of course, Gong Yoo. I can't see anybody else in his role.
And what crap are they talking about? By seeing a remake first, who will come to watch the original? Just who? And then how will "Korean films reach other places"?

I like subtitles, but what is most beautiful to me about watching with subtitles is to hear (and maybe learn a bit of) another language. It is nice to be like, "Oh! I know this word, it's a discourse marker!" Or, "Oh, that's a variation of that other word, just with a different suffix, indicating that it is spoken in x tone!" Maybe that's just me. :)

As someone who has regularly been watching dramas since the 7th grade I find that so funny. I don't have to think about reading subtitles any more than I have to think about hearing an actor's voice.
I've had people tell me plenty of times they don't like reading subtitles and I just think it's kind of odd. Especially nowadays with people glued to their smartphones, people are reading all the time. But when it comes to a movie or TV show they don't like it. It doesn't take long to adjust and become used to subtitles, especially when Korean isn't a very fast language.

People hate it because they want to concentrate on the whole movie instead of the subtitle at the bottom of the screen. I'm fine with subs because I'm used to it (hi K-dramas) but most people prefer dubbing.
Spain, France, Italy won't do subtitles on the big screen. They'd demand everything to be re-record into their own language.

Personally I can't stand dubs. I have to watch all Ghibli movies in subs, and I have watched more foreign language films and tv shows this year than I have English ones. I get that some people don't like it (well, I don't get it but I can understand that they have a different preference), but at the same time, there is a cultural element to watching a film in its own language that I really enjoy and I wish more people understood. Well I mean you all do cos we're all here cos of Kdramas but yeah...

hades
December 8, 2016 at 5:53 PM
@sic I agree with you about the cultural element that is lost. There are many idiosyncrasies that will be lost inherent to Korean culture in a foreign remake. Having said that, I do not mind that they are doing a remake seeing that it is becoming increasingly easy for perspective audiences to get their hands on foreign media these days. Furthermore, from the posts here, the movie seems to have had a limited release in the US.
It would be understandable if the vast majority of movie going audiences in any particular country may prefer to see a movie in reflective of their respective native languages and culture. Some words just can't be translated, customs incomprehensible without prior knowledge, and the list goes on. Few movies have been able to transcend this limitation however, Studio Ghibli is a good example.
Lastly, appropriation is not uncommon in art and the zombie theme is probably universally understood.

I always switch back and forth between the Japanese and English with each watching! Christian Bale was amazing, as was Lauren Bacall (seriously, how did they even GET her????), but the Japanese had Kimutaku and he was crazy good too. So....yeah. I can never decide which I like better! And with this movie cultural stuff being lost is kinda irrelevant because it's an ENGLISH novel. Any Japanese cultural stuff was added into the adaptation, not original to the story. Also, I don't need subtitles either way cause I speak Japanese. So....I honestly like both equally
Kiara

@Harukogirl

December 8, 2016 at 2:49 PM
Yeah, it doesn't bother people like us who are used to it, but there are plenty of people, in and out of the U.S., who don't like subtitles for a number of reasons. Maybe they don't read quickly, or they don't read well (or at all), or they miss things when trying to focus on both, or they're just lazy.
Personally, there are a number of foreign films that I'd love to see on the big screen some day and I wish Hollywood studios would make more of an effort to distribute foreign media. Even then I still might not get them. I don't live in NY/LA, so consider myself lucky when I get some (like The Handmaiden, The Assassin, Blue is the Warmest Color) in theaters for a week or so near me. I'm happy when they come, but understand why they and many indie films don't make it here.
In the end I don't think these remakes actually hurt the original film. And in best case scenario, they might introduce the more curious to the originals.

I think it's funny that they're fooling themselves into believing that a successful remake will bring much attention to the Korean original. Sure, people who REALLY like the remake might seek out the original, but the casual moviegoer isn't even gonna know it isn't an original Hollywood movie.

On a completely different note, I do not understand why the USofA has not grasped the wonder that is bullet trains. They have the population and a country big enough for them. It'd make things so much easier! But no...

I like airplanes but hate airports and the major hassle they are these days. I would LOOOOOVE bullet trains in the US, but it seems like they would have to lay so much track it might not be worth it?

Actually, AMTRAK operates Acela Express high-speed trains in the Northeast between Boston and DC. They have a top speed of 150 mph. Alas, the infrastructure is not up to snuff, so the trains cannot operate at sustained high speed. Plus there's a lot of freight and slower passenger traffic that causes bottlenecks. Sadly, the equipment can't be operated at its design potential...

I'd rather get a dubbed version of the actual Train to Busan for the subtitle-phobic (and we do have some at the library - sometimes folks just can't read fast enough to keep up w/subtitles. If you have a dubbed version, they'd love it.)
I bought a copy for the library, & it has not touched the shelves since it was catalogued - a steady stream of folks have it on hold. So...I think the American market for it is there. :)

Hey fellow beanies, so sorry to hijack this but I need help(from my African beanies especially). I'm from Ghana and it's so difficult to get my hands in some of my favourite shows. I tried viki and dramafever but they all tell me it's not available in my country. I really want to watch some shows because my vacation is here and I need my doses of kdrama. Any suggestions please?

KissAsian and Dramacool are popular options. I'm not sure how big their catalogs are, though, since I use both DF and Viki in the States.

I don't like this at all. Look at Sassy Girl, and or the Ring, Tales of Two sisters remake...it's not the same...because let's face it, Asian actors and Western Actors have different approach to acting. And I don't know, the feels are not just the same. I can't imagine GOT being Asian, or Crazy little thing called love being Western. It's just not...sigh

@GedSkaiKru, @royal,
Thanks for the pointer to CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE. I haven't checked out Thai productions until now. This sounds interesting, if only to get a taste of a different language and culture from the Korean that I've come to know and love. Not to mention the feels and how they are conveyed. ;-)
I've gotten so spoiled that I find it hard to watch American TV nowadays, aside from old standby NCIS.

Cried a river when Su-an started singing "Aloha Oe" in Korean. I grew up singing that song when I was a kid. She sang it in Korean and I was singing along in Hawaiian, sobbing all the way to the end.

Most likely it will be remade with white leading actors, supposedly cause white audiences will feel more sympathetic towards the characters and more money will be made as a result (excuses I've heard before about why people of color are not cast more often). Nevermind that the movie is already successful and built on relatable universal themes like a parent/child relationship...oh, don't forget the zombies.

They would ruin it totally, if this movie is remade. Plus, they already have way too many zombie movies and series, so why need to remake it. Just release it worldwide with subtitles. It isnt hard.

Honestly I feel like Train To Busan was the movie WWZ should have been, if they had actually followed the book. WWZ the book was essentially about the everyday human element of people in such an apocalypse which I thought Train to Busan handled well. But we saw how Hollywood adapted the book to make it the awesome soldier hero who saves the world with technology and the military etc... I hope this remake won't make the same mistake.

Agreed and personally I'd rather see a remake of World War Z and make it better than a remake of Train to Busan.
I'm satisfied even though it's wasn't the best movie Korea ever made. I enjoyed it very much. That's what I wanted from a summer blockbuster.

Unpopular opinion, but I don't think it was necessarily the actors who made this movie awesome. It was the writing of sympathetic characters who you want to root for, that are capable of decent decision-making in the face of a zombie apocalypse. It's a typical zombie movie, but with a very strong human, emotional element that emphasizes the connections between the people stuck in a terrible situation. With the exception of Ma Dong Suk who was the clear stand-out for me, I do think other actors could have played these roles just fine. None of the characters are iconic or extremely complex in any shape or form. Gong Yoo's character really didn't do much for me to be completely honest. By the time they got to his big dramatic moment at the end, there had already been so much !!drama!! in the movie that it failed to make an impact on me anymore.
That being said, there is no point in doing a remake, it's just a shameless cash grab. The original is a solid movie with solid special effects with not much to improve upon. They must have been itching for a new Asian movie to remake after the Asian Horror remakes trend took a nosedive.

Gong Yoo didn't do much for me either. The supporting actors in Chungmuro are amazing. They are just as good as most the leads and would easily steal the show.
He's got a way to go in Chungmuro. Having a hit movie doesn't put one in the same league as the best in the industry. He has to keep proving himself.

I have been putting off watching this movie but finally gave in after seeing this post. Worst/Best idea ever...it is 3am over here and am a mess. Great cast, writing, acting, directing...I need to go to bed now. As for the remake, it just won't be the same so what is the point in making one? (especially since the movie only premiered this year).

I love Train to Busan, but much preferred Ma Dong Suk's character to Gong Yoo's. That was Ma Dong Suk's movie if you ask me. He's the one that really stood out there.
That being said, I really couldn't care less about Hollywood doing a remake. The original will still exist whether this one sucks or not. Of course they could release the original nationwide, but they figure they can make more money if they remake it. Let's be real, we all know plenty of people who refuse to watch foreign films. If people watch the remake and love it or hate it I'd be happy to point them in the direction of the original.
I'll probably watch it to compare when it comes out, but the only real hope of this being successful is if they don't take out all the emotional stints in favor of action, and don't fill the cast with actors who are popular, but can't really bring depth into their acting. I don't have high hopes for it, but we'll see.

Hollywood also made a remake of My Sassy Girl, Il Mare and Oldboy and they didn't quite capture the essence of these films. I don't think anyone can equal Jeon Ji Hyun or Choi Min Shik when it comes to portraying such classic characters. And I don't think they will be able to do it with another Hollywood actor doing Gong Yoo's or Ma Dong Seok's character.

The best remake would be using Asian American actors and filming it in Korea to get the best viewing experience for Americans that cannot keep up with subtitles.
Mass transit just does not exist in the USA like it does in Korea so it will just not be as good if filmed in the US. They could be planning to film it in Europe, and make them US visitors I suppose, but still will not be as good as Korea.

I am literally on my way to watch it on the cinema. I was really surprised when i saw it announced here in Mexico City. We are used to subtitles, I dont see why United States cant make the effort.
Sometimes remakes work, sometimes dont. Usually in a remake you have to improve or make it your own, and after all i have read and the praise it got, i dont know how they are going to improve it. Plus, you cant replace Gong Yoo.
