2016 KBS Drama Awards

With some of the biggest drama hits of the past year, KBS had a full roster of stars in attendance to pick up trophies at the KBS Drama Awards. Or, as I like to call it, the Moonlight Descended From the Sun Drawn By Clouds Show, since those two dramas pretty much raked in all the awards (a surprise to no one, as they were both massive hits for the network). This year, KBS did the really annoying thing of splitting the Daesang AND the Top Excellence Actor Awards, which always drives me bonkers. Just choose a winner! It’s not that hard!

Song Hye-gyo and Song Joong-ki split the Daesang, which I guess is not unlike Descended From the Sun winning the Daesang as a show at the Baeksangs earlier this year. Kim Haneul won a Top Excellence Award for her thoughtful melodrama On the Way to the Airport, and then the men—Park Shin-yang (Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho) and Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds)—had to split theirs. Basically, there were just a lot of winners.

Almost everyone got a Best Couple Award, and Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-gyo got two of them(!), for being the uber couple. There were tear-filled speeches and lots of good cheer to go around, and probably a lot of praying from KBS execs to have another drama year just like this one in 2017. Here are your winners! Drumroll, please…

Naturally, the Song-Song Couple got the bulk of the limelight on the red carpet. I actually preferred their classic black-and-white look at the Baeksangs, which was more polished than what they chose this time around. Song Joong-ki’s casual burgundy suit is so not my kind of look, especially when paired with a turtleneck. I’m lamenting the wasted opportunity to dazzle us all in a perfect black tux. I don’t particularly love Song Hye-gyo’s dress either, though at least she looks classic and elegant in her gown. It’s not a dazzler, but she looks like Snow White, which is probably the look she was going for. Her makeup is flawless, but I mean, come on—it’s Song Hye-gyo.

Co-MCs for the night Jeon Hyun-moo, Kim Ji-won (Descended From the Sun) and Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) arrived together. It’s another sea of white dresses on the red carpet, of course, but I like this one on Kim Ji-won—it’s sexy and perfectly fitted, and I love the sleeves. I do wish she’d glammed up her hair and makeup though. Meanwhile, Park Bo-gum in a purrrty black velvet tux is a very nice Christmas present. Thank you, Santa.

It’s such a shame that Kim Yoo-jung wasn’t there, but the rest of the Moonlight cast sure had their moment in the spotlight. Chae Soo-bin, Jinyoung, and Kwak Dong-yeon were bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and beautiful. I am especially in love with Kwak Dong-yeon’s blue tux—so bright and fun!

Kim Haneul wore a big Cinderella ball gown, which has a lovely full skirt that I just want to swish around. I don’t know that the dress really works top-to-bottom though—the sleeves are actually not that flattering—and I think it’s just too wedding-dressy for my taste. I would’ve liked to see her in something sleek and sexy, and less juvenile. Her On the Way to the Airport co-star Lee Sang-yoon wore a classic tux and a chipper smile. I’m just happy that they both picked up well-deserved trophies for their drama.

I. Love. This. Dress. It may not be colorful, but it’s glitzy and fabulous, and it’s my favorite of the night. Kim So-hyun looks like a movie star in it, and she’s flawless in every shot. Her Page Turner co-star Ji-soo was also there, looking like a big dork, which is totally Ji-soo’s appeal (Don’t ever change!). They both already have dramas lined up for 2017, just as it should be.

Jo Boa (The Man Living in Our House) rocked the red carpet last at the MBC Awards, and she did it again at KBS, this time with a lovely blush dress with just enough embellishment to make it blingy and eye-catching. Most importantly, she’s glowing in every picture. It’s been a good year for Jo Boa, who made the most out of secondary roles, turning minor characters into memorable ones.

Park Shin-yang took home a Top Excellence Award for his heartwarming performance in Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho, a character he made as offbeat and interesting as he was honorable and heroic. Heo Jung-eun sat between her two TV dads—Park Shin-yang and Oh Ji-ho—at the ceremony, and both of them cheered her on when she won the Youth Actress Award for no less than THREE dramas this year: Neighborhood Lawyer, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, and Oh My Geum-bi.

Another young actress, Jin Ji-hee, who’s growing up so fast! She had the short 4-episode drama Baek-hee Has Returned this past year, and looks lovely in her dress, which somehow makes me think of spring and snow at the same time.

Five Kids’ runaway stars Sung Hoon and Shin Hye-sun arrived together, arm-in-arm. Shin Hye-sun is cracking me up lately as the hapless second lead in Legend of the Blue Sea, and I can see why she became one of 2016’s breakout stars.

Up-and-comer Gong Seung-yeon also had a full year, from SBS’s Six Flying Dragons to KBS’s Master–God of Noodle, and she’s due to be in tvN’s Introverted Boss next. I love the whole look she has here, from her crown of braids to her silvery gown. The hair really makes it feel young and fresh, and her smile is infectious.

Han Go-eun (Miss Mama Mia) really knows how to strut. Her dress was made for movement, because in every shot while she’s walking, the train flutters around her perfectly. I don’t even think the dress is all that interesting, but she just wears the hell out of it.

Meh, this dress on Jo Yeo-jung (Babysitter). It’s just so sack-like. Maybe if it had been pants, I would’ve thought it mod and cool or something.

Laurel Tree Tailors was another of KBS’s big shows, and couples Ra Mi-ran and Cha In-pyo and Hyun-woo and Lee Se-young were almost in matching outfits. They all got Best Couple Awards, and Hyun-woo and Lee Se-young were especially cutesy together on the red carpet.

Lee Yuri, whaaaaat are you wearing? Why does your face look ghostly, and why did you get swallowed up by a pink monstrosity with capes for sleeves? I wish someone could explain this dress to me, but I think it defies explanation.

Happy new year, Beanies.

Highlights of the show
1. Heo Jung Eum winning best young actress award
2. Park Bogum crying during his award speech and Song Joongki crying in support
3. Kim Soo Hyun and Song Joong Ki hugging after awarding the Daesang
4. Park Bogum running to give Joong Ki Hyung a tissue and a hug.

One disappointment
No best couple for Five Kids Sung Hoon and Shin Hye Sun. *insert sad smiley*

Other than that, KBS had the fairest and best award ceremony of the big 3.

Yeah I was really happy with everything but I honestly expected the Five Kids couple Sung Hoon and Shin Hye Sun to win a Best Couple prize (considering they gave so many couples), they generated so much buzz for the drama with their coupling :(

I skimmed through the winners looking for Sung Hoon and Shin Hye Sun, but came out with nothing. SO DISAPPOINTED. Laurel Tree Tailors must be too fresh in everyone's memories... At least Sung Hoon got a newcomer award and Shin Hye Sun is rocking it with her projects last year and this year, so there.

On List 2016 Best bromance episode, Cha Tae-hyun, Song Joongki and Park Bogum took second place after Jo Jin-woong and Ha Jung-woo. They belonged in same agency and in 2012, Cha moved to new agency and Song Joongki and Park Bogum followed him. Cha was amazed Song and Park's success this year ("our agency is not even big and it is like miracle two people...").

Yeah, they were all from Sidus HQ and when Cha Taehyun's contract expired with them he and his manager founded Blossom in 2012. His manager's actors also followed like Bogum, Joongki and Lim Ju-hwan.

Well, if you compare it with the other two, this is loads better. I still can't get the hang of split awards but this time, with the Daesang and Top Excellence, I have no problems with it at all.

"This year, KBS did the really annoying thing of splitting the Daesang AND the Top Excellence Actor Awards, which always drives me bonkers. Just choose a winner! It’s not that hard!"

Lol. Just wait until you see what SBS did. They may not have split the Daesang, but they split several of their Top Excellence & Excellence awards. Which may not have been so ridiculous if they hadn't already made separate categories for rom-com, genre (?), and fantasy dramas! Like seriously?! After all that, you couldn't keep it to one? I facepalmed hard on this one.

KBS definitely comes off as very decisive in comparison. Not that that is saying very much, lol.

Now I wish when SBS had already given so many awards they should've split the Daesang too. JJS deserved one! I haven't seen RDTK so won't say anything about HSK and I'm sure he is great but JI wouldn't have been the way it was if not for JJS's perfect jealous acting. The viwing experience would've changed if it wasn't him.

Plus SBS gave everyone an award except for Kang Hanna who actually desrved one.

No, Daesang should only choose one. It is grand award, and only one winner for it. I recogniz JJS's talents as much as I do for others like Kim RaE Won in Punch (not doctors) and Lee Jun Ki (who was not even given any acting award). But Han Seok Kyu and Jo Jong Suk, it is surely Han Seok Kyu. Although JJS is good enough to win for Daesang but this is Han Seok Kyu we are talking about.

I completely agree that the Daesang should only go to one. That said, though, I do think Jo Jung Suk's performance was the best SBS had to offer this year and, had ratings for JI been a bit more impressive, I think he should have won, hands-down. Even against Han Seok Kyu. Obviously, this is just my opinion and HSK's performance is great enough that I could certainly see others valuing his performance more than JJS. In fact, Lee Jun-ki's performance is great enough that I can also completely understand those who think him deserving, as well. The Daesang doesn't just have to do with that though, and, of the most impressive performances, there's no doubt that Han Seuk-kyu was the most successful in the ratings game. For that reason, I'm happy with his win because he does deserve it.

I guess I just disagree with "it is surely Han Seok Kyu" because Jo Jung-seok truly amazed me more this year, if we're going off performance alone.

I wish the award show was shorter. So long. The only rewarding thg was Song Joong Ki - Park Bo Gum's bromance and very moving speeches. I teared up too.

Kim So Hyun looked so fabulous. She traded inher black tutu dress from MBC night.

It was kind of obvious it would be Song Song. Couple for Daesang. Cause they gave the best femalr actress award to Kim Ha neul.

Congrats to all the winners

The funniest thing is Song Joong Ki crying for Park Bo Gum! and it seems like everyone else was also puzzled by the fact that he cried his eyes out for Bo Gumi...
I loved the little girl and her crush with Song Joong-ki is so adorable. She has a big crush on him to a point that she unintentionally implied that he is not a good actor but a handsome one.

Congrats to PBG, I think he is a good actor and he deserved his win. He is also one of the actors I like. However I agree with you that I found the crying between him and Song Joon Ki funny. I just couldn't shake the feeling that they overreacted (cried) because they didn't want to be criticized. Anyways once again congrats to PBG, and I look forward to his future dramas.

Park Bo Gum is one of Joong Ki's best friends and also labelmate. They've surprised each other at fanmeets and truly expressed their love and care for one another..they are literally like brothers so trust that those tears couldn't have been an overreaction. Some people don't follow the two enough and claim they're overreacting when it's just their personalities, they get emotional all the time off screen

Agree. That's just their personalities. Even Joong-ki said that he was nicknamed a crybaby on set.

Anyway, I've noticed that this is a defensive reaction to protect some oppa who got flak because of his award speech. Nobody really needs tears to come across as sincere (ie Song Hye-kyo, Han Suk-kyu, Yoo Jae-suk).

My favourite look(s) of the night:
- all 3 of my "Moonlight..." guys
- Kim So Hyun
--> Honorable Mention:
- Chae Soo Bin... I don't like her entire look, but something about it keeps drawing me in =)

Favourite moments/highlights:
- Park Bo Gum's acceptance Speech HANDS DOWN and having Song Joong Ki happy-cry alongside him <3 Real-life bromance right there
- how supportive everyone seemed to be during the whole entire night of the awards.... Seriously, it must have been a party and so fun to be sitting at the "Scarlet Heart: Ryeo" table <3
- the Best Couple Awards moment (=
- all and every moment that included Park Bo Gum, the "Moonlight..." and "Scarlet Heart: Ryeo" cast members
- HEO JUNG EUN.... SO PRECIOUS!!!

I probably sound like a bitter old geezer, but Kbs has been pretty disappointing with the way they've been giving out awards the past two years. It was pretty disappointing to see go du shim have to share the daesang with kim soo hyun last year. And this year, well- we all expected it, and understandable i guess, since DOTS was such a hit, but I can't help but think park shin yang might have gotten the daesang if this was kbs just a few years ago. Not that any of these awards were ever the beacon of fairness, but still. Then again, we all have our favorites... *shrug*. Congrats to everyone who had a successful year. And for heaven sakes, no more bridal fashion, UGH.

Now, now. I do acknowledge that Jang Hyuk is amazing in Beautiful Mind but PBG has been praised left and right by critics and audiences for his performance in Moonlight. He's an extremely talented young actor so even without his popularity or the drama's success in ratings, he is deserving to get an award.

It was just really unfortunate for Jang Hyuk that KBS not only shorten his drama but also forgot about him in the year-end awards.

(Not really pertaining to you)

Why are people latching on Bogum though? Is it because he's young? Even among the acting awards winners, his performance was top-tier. So why do people think he particularly "stole" Jang Hyuk's spot?

It would be a better comparison with Lee Sang-yoon who won an Excellence Award, no? He's not only closer in age to JH but his show also didn't deliver in ratings. And if we're judging on performance alone, JH's performance was arguably even more compelling than the Daesang winners. But hey, it doesn't work that way. You also need the viewers (ie audience rating) to be noticed in these year-end shows.

Jang Hyuk is definitely better than Park Bo Gum as he is way experienced. SBS was better since they still gave awards for low rated drama. it jz a shame that JH didnt win anything.

Park Bo Gum - he is among the best in the actor with similar age. I only saw him in I Remember You, and i knew he can go further. He is just like SJK for me - popular pretty face with acting chop.

It's a pity he didn't receive an award but people fans like you should get over it and stop being bitter. It just make everything look worse.

And you know, just because they're pretty and popular doesn't mean they don't deserve awards. SJK, SHK and PBG are talented in their own right.

I really don't know why you're dragging a deserving and talented actor like PBG with this pity party on Jang Hyuk. If you think KBS is just awarding anyone who is pretty and popular then Kim Woobin and Suzy should have given awards too, but they didn't.

0

Uhm, eye-candies Kim Woobin and Suzy didn't get any award for Uncontrollably Fond so that argument just doesn't apply here.

0

Disagree. This year, not only were the winners in highly rated dramas but they also delivered in performance and talent. So slighting them with such nonsense is futile and reeks of bitterness.

0

that´s unfair. Bogummy is an astonishingly skillful young actor. he can induce really strong emotions in viewers from awe to chills. He has def been noticed by even his sunbaes and he wasnt popular right away, only after people felt the "Bo Gum Effect". The PDs sense he has a "grip" over viewers and even in other dramas his name comes up as a "sure bet". I hope he takes on another creepy role some day, I really loved him as Min and some of those colors showed in the early stages of Yeong.

i find a bit odd that Kim Ji Won won best new actress and excellent actress at the same time. And no female netizen award.

In all three, KBS gives awards the fairest, not much upsetting.

Really wish YJ could have been there. 17 and got her excellent award. Moonlight team is the biggest winner of the night.

What is wrong with crying when those were genuine tears? People react differently. I aldo hate it when people judge me for not crying enough when it is sad.

I don't mind excessive well-ups like this when it looks genuine and sincere. And PBG and SJK really do look like they adore each toher.

SHK truly deserves the Daesang awards. She's the one that stood out among DOTS actors for her acting skills although SJK got the lion share of attention. And if you think about it, she gave KBS three of their biggest and highest rated dramas of all time: AIMH, FH and DOTS

Truth. She pulled the weight in DOTS.

It was both her and SJK carried the show together. It is right that her character probably the only one who was developed well, and lets be honest, their roles are not so challenging in which any role can outshine the others. If you want to see if she is really carry the weight of drama by herself alone, she should be in one drama and her partner / most co stars inexperience or not on par with her acting. Just like what LJK did in Scarlet Heart (although Kang Ha Na and Kang Ha Neul both have their own shares too).

Completely. She hard carried towards the end when the plot was going off the rails and Captain Yoo was coming back from the dead constantly. Episode 15 alone I think qualifies her for the honor. And yep, KBS owes her big time. I wouldn't have minded just her getting it, but I have no issue with SJK getting it either since his character did actually get people excited, to begin with.

And to think her fist Daesang by the network is a co-daesang.. well, eventhough she's not the best actress in Korea, she always act well. In DOTS too she carried herself quite well and managed to pull off memorable character.
Let's hope she'll get her own Daesang by creating a masterpiece character that will merit the achievement and acting abilities.

I don't have any problem with KBS splitting the Daesang between SHK and SJK but if they had to go with just one, I'd definitely pick SHK because of the last few episodes of the drama and, yes, also because all the other "Hallyu wave" dramas she's been in in the past.

this was fun to watch. lots of cuteness (so yi-hyun and her husband!), prettiness, humour, and heart-warming stuff all around. i liked the MCs too. kim ji-won (who looked so perfect in both of her gowns) and bogummie need no words, but i liked jun hyun-moo a lot too. i know he gets a lot of hate sometimes, but i was never sure why. from what i've seen on him on variety (which is admittedly pretty limited), i've always liked him. he seems to be one of the more eloquent MCs and has a good knack for keeping things flowing smoothly.

dear sweet bogummie! i actually reached my hand out to my screen to try and pat his head! what IS it about him that makes you want to mother him?! i'm typically the absolute opposite of the nurturing type, but bogummie makes me want to take him under my wing and mother him. he's only 6 years younger than i am! i'd totally even be willing to wake up in the morning to feed him breakfast if he required it.

but i laughed and went aww when song joong-ki started crying with him. so good to see how close and loving those two are.

i thought the fashion was much better than MBC's, there were a lot of dresses that i liked/a lot of great looks.

ra mi-ran has looked really good on red carpets the past few times i've seen her. loved her salmon-colored dress and the way she was styled. last time i saw her, i remember the black lace dress she wore and i was surprised that she could look so glam! made me realize she has a pretty complexion; i think she could wear a lot of colors well.

kim ji-won looked so pretty in both of her dresses—i loved the white, but i thought the blue dress was exquisite on her. kim so-hyun is growing up so gracefully! i hope 2017 brings only good stuff for her, professionally speaking. aka i hope she gets her big breakout grown-up role, because she's certainly talented enough.

i wasn't a fan of song hye-kyo's dress either, but i did like the cut/style of it. just didn't like the pattern. but she's one of the rare actresses (even among a sea of pretty women) who really can wear anything and still all you see is her prettiness. remember the mushroom cut from worlds within? how many actresses could have pulled it off and still all you saw was their face?

han go-eun is freaking ageless. i can't believe she's in her forties, though i feel like i've only ever seen her wear white or black on red carpets. lee se-young's pink lace dress was nice too...

Ahh, World's Within.. I actually liked that drama despite popular opinion, and she and Hyun Bin had excellent chemistry (IMO better than Hyun Bin-Ha Ji Won in Secret Garden or SongSong). SHK looked good even with her mushroom hairstyle.

Ah...seeing Joong ki and Bogum tearing up during their speeches makes my heart ache ? I am so happy for these two... It's a well-deserved win.
As for the double daesang, i don't have any problem with it because song-song couple deserved it. They carried the show despite the non-sensical script (towards the last episodes).
Sad to see Yoojung's absence ?But at least kbs still gave her an award. Poor yoojung being witch hunted by knetizens ?

I thought none of the cast of sweet strangers and me attended till I saw Jo Boa in the photo. But even though she attended, she did not get any award. Actually, 2016 Kbs award show was just for DOTS and Mooncloud and shows which achieved high ratings, just like a school prize giving ceremony. Thanks for the recap. Save the time to watch it.

Song Hye-kyo looked like a Jane Austen heroine with that dress. LOL.

Anyway, I agree, this is the most sensible year-end award show even when they split the top two awards.

I have a question. Why are white, silver, and soft pink such favorite colors for the red carpet? Seriously EVERY YEAR, we get a parade of wedding dresses, or pink dresses with some outliers here and there. Do the colors have a special meaning in Korea? Who started the trend? and can we please for the love of fashion get more adventurous and risky colors and styles for the future?!?

Thank God for Kim So Hyun, Kim So Eun and Gong Seung Yeon for at least keeping the red carpet interesting.

Shin Hye Sun's dress is figure hugging

I love Chae Soo Bin's look. I don't exactly love her dress but maybe cause its her or the air she wears it with. Its sexy and with her long hair, she looks so mature and beautiful.

Kim Hanuel is straight up wearing a wedding dress, period! Its like she was unhappy to miss the awesome awards that everyone else gets to go and party while she's stuck in some dry ole' wedding. So she said, screw this, I'mma do me! Off she skipped right to the awards. That's why you see she's all 'feeling ma self' in her dress, cause she knows she's naughty and she knows it. Go back and see her inside joke laugh. Puts things into perspective.

I was busy watching MBC Music Awards because of Shinhwa that I didn't get to watch this. (Worth waiting btw)

Looking forward to a subbed version of this one from KBS World. I saw snippets, and awwwww Song Joong Ki and Park Bogum crying made me cry. When Bogum thanked his Father, I was bawling.

I feel like this drama awards was much better than SBS, which was a total mess imo. they gave everyone and their mothers awards. It makes no sense to me that seohyun and baekhyun got an award for moon lovers.

This was the most sensible awards show by far. It may seem like there were "too many awards" but in between DoTS and MDBC and two charming weekend dramas, it's only right, really. The recognition was much deserved, and heck, they even skipped Sung Hoon and Shin Hyesun--they were the surprise jewel of their drama. I'm happy for Hyun Woo and Lee Seyoung though, so at least one of my favorite weekend couples got recognized.

I'm ready to move on from the awesome Song-Song couple after they got the well-deserved accolades. I've been wishing for Song Hyekyo and Lee Junki to star together in a drama FOR TEN YEARS since they became the faces of Hallyu, and I'd love to see Song Joongki help bring recognition to a lesser known actress. (Seo Hyorim who's stuck in second lead purgatory? Park Seyoung who can't get that big break? Jang Nara who's more popular outside of Kdramaland?) But Song-Song is in my personal Hall of Fame. I love them separately and think they're both gorgeous, but I didn't think putting them together would work!!

I know the ratings weren't as high but curious to know why none of them won anything/attended at all.. despite the disappointment of the drama I thought Woo Bin did carry his character amazingly and we shouldn't forget how much he poured his heart into his character

well I agree regarding KWB. but then again. even if he isn't get recognation. his acting improved so much and at times that's the most important think. he has already famous. and it's obvious based on his interview, he is starting to have more confident in his a acting after his role in UF. he is shining now in chungmuro.

I do thk the dresses here are the best of the 3 awards. Love the variation with sleeves. Other than white theres peach and those with beadings or glitter/stones. I love Kim Ji won's second dress too, lovely shade of blue. She got lot of award but therws no casting news of her in any drama for 2017 yet.. Hope she gets a good project

I was most looking forward to the KBS Drama Awards even though the winners were obvious. While I think the Daesang should have went to Song Joong Ki alone, I completely understand why KBS would split it. Descendants of the Sun's massive success is unreplicable. Congratulations to Heo Jung Eun and Lee Joon Hyuk on their awards.

Song Joong Ki’s suit was a tragedy. C'mon, we know you can look prettier than that. Sung Hoon was further proof turtlenecks have no place on the red carpet. Lee Sang Yoon and Shin Hye Sun looked the best. I hope Kim Yoo Jung recovers soon.

I'm heartbroken that Kim Yoo Jung wasn't here tonight I could only imagine how she would have walked the carpet with class, elegance and grace. I know her health does come first, but this wouldn't have had to happen if the netizens hadn't overreacted over such a miniscule issue (similar to how Lee Jong Suk is being treated at the moment). Still, I'm so proud of her and what she has achieved this 2016. I know she'll come out of this stronger, and even better things are coming for her in 2017.
