Yoon Kyun-sang, Chae Soo-bin sign on for Rebel Hong Gil-dong

At last, we have a cast in place for MBC’s new fusion sageuk Rebel Hong Gil-dong, and I’m really excited to see this pairing: Yoon Kyun-sang (Doctors) has signed on to play the legendary Joseon folk hero Hong Gil-dong, and Chae Soo-bin (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) will play his leading lady. It’ll be the first time that either of them is headlining a drama, but they’re both solid actors who have proven their weight as supporting players in sageuk (Six Flying Dragons, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) and contemporary dramas as well. Plus, they’re both so individually cute that they have to be cute together, right?

The new Monday-Tuesday series from PD Kim Jin-man of Kill Me, Heal Me and writer Hwang Jin-young of King’s Daughter, Soo Baek-hyang is a retelling of the legend of Hong Gil-dong, Joseon’s most famous fictional hero. He was the illegitimate son of a nobleman who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, and set up his own utopian nation that broke class barriers. The drama will set the story during the reign of famous tyrant king Yeonsangun, and paint Hong Gil-dong as Joseon’s first revolutionary activist.

Yoon Kyun-sang will play Hong Gil-dong, the leader of a smuggling ring who “knows the arts, knows women, knows laughter, and knows loyalty.” He has no interest in the political world of his father, and only needs nature and his horses to be happy. Clearly things will change to make him take an interest in what’s happening to the people of his nation, for him to rise up and take a stand.

Chae Soo-bin has been cast as a young widower who was rescued by Hong Gil-dong. She grows up into a young woman filled with revenge in her heart, and she dreams of the day when she can lure the king into bed and stab him to avenge the death of her husband. For her revenge she’ll even outdo Joseon’s famous femme fatale Jang No-suk, King Yeonsangun’s consort, played by Honey Lee (Come Back, Ajusshi). Lee will play the sole confidante to a mad king who stakes her whole life on him, but she’s never forgotten her first love, Hong Gil-dong.

Also joining the cast is Kim Ji-suk (Oh Hae-young Again) as a notorious killer who believes that all people are evil by nature. He spills untold amounts of blood for the sake of strengthening the royal power, but begins to lose his way and wonders whether he actually spilled all that blood to build a kingdom, or killed because he enjoyed seeing blood spilled. Well, this guy sounds scary.

Creepy killer aside, I’m actually glad that Kim Ji-suk isn’t playing the king, because he was Chae Soo-bin’s high school teacher in Sassy Go Go and I don’t want to think about her trying to seduce and murder him. See, there’s an upside to the death and mayhem! I’m really happy with how the cast turned out, even though right now I can only picture Yoon Kyun-sang and Chae Soo-bin in a puppy romance (because how adorable would that be?), but I’m sure they have it in them to be epic and heroic and heart-wrenching too. Make us proud!

Rebel Hong Gil-dong follows Night Light on Mondays and Tuesdays in January.

So no Namgong Min nor Ji Sung? I seriously can't imagine Honey Lee's first love being played by Yoon Kyun Sang ...

yoon kyun sang-29,honey lee -33. its not like LJS-LBY pairing in ICHYV.

Yep. 4 years is also the age gap between Lee Sung-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy, and they look fine to me.

Maybe its because she has more of a womanly image( sexy hot from the pics i've seen)as opposed to YKS more puppyish one.

Me, I'm more worried i'd end up shipping Honey Lee's character more which is...nooooo becuse this Chae Soo Bin whom I love.

I can't see it either in modern dramas but he looks a bit older in sageuk attire. His body build (big and tall) would make it easy to age him with a little help from the costume designer.
(I think he was the only young one in SFD to rock the mustache'. He looked really good and much older.)
He had chemistry with Han Ye-ri and Honey Lee has her own charm so I think they'll manage to make it work.

Exactly my thoughts! Finally a good casting news! Don't know much about YKS(as I have only seen him in Pinocchio ) but i am sure CSB will rock! She was pure awesome in SGG.. after seo Hyun Jin, it was CSB who woke up the fangirl in me..

His character in SFD was made famous by Jo Jin Woong so it was very easy to cheer for him.

@kiara Exactly.
To me, Musa Moohyul = Jo Jinwoong.
Yoon Kyunsang = Baby Moohyul.

I really, really like Kyunsang's portrayal of Moohyul.. but it will never surpass Jo Jinwoong's Moohyul.

Glad that Yoon Kyunsang challenging as lead character in sageuk. His acting is getting better and I want to see his improvement day by day.

I still remember his stone-like acting in The Time We Weren't In Love and not-so-good in Pinocchio. I honestly watching him for his visual-only in those dramas.
Six Flying Dragons definitely made him improve ALOT. 50 episodes of fusion sageuk with bunch of A-class actors (Kim Myungmin, YooAhin, Park Hyukkwon, Han Yeri, etc) he should have learned a lot.
And yes, Doctors shows his improvement.

Keep learning, my Baby Moohyul!

Her role in MDBC was a lead as well as in sassy go go, not 1st lead but she was 2nd lead. She also had a lead in House of Bluebird and she's lead for her web drama "My Catman" that is coming in December or early 2017. I hope that in the future she gets more and more leads coz she can act real good. Bad ass like in sassy go go or sweet like in house of bluebird! We love you soobin.

*breaks out party balloons*

So does that mean Chae Soo-bin is the primary lead?

Please let it be so, drama gods, I could do with some good news from dramaland now and the rise of a talented and versatile young actress would fit that bill nicely. She's been fantastic in everything I've seen her in, starting from the cameo in Spy where she first caught my attention.

(another thing YKS and CSB have in common - scene-stealing supporting roles early in their careers!)

It makes more sense for her to play the lead. She'd be free to be around the hero. Honey Lee can do the palace politics with concubine Jang like she did with Queen Daemok.

Please let me love them both!
I have a feeling am gonna love Honey Lee's character more because it sounds like her's has the potential to be more complex and interesting, from drama history.

But the revenge part of CSB's character makes me hopeful... but THEN she can end up like Lim Ji Yeon's character in Jackpot, killed/not killed/no one cares to make sure and forgotten.
I really need to stop worrying!

Please love them both. Let Kim Ji-suk's character and the king get all the hate lol.

I think if CSB was playing Lim Ji Yeon's character we would be cheering for her. I'm not so sure what happen to Ms Lim. She was decent in The Treacherous.

Lol I remember reading the Jackpot recaps and people were wondering what happened to the Lead actress. What?!! Its like she didn't exist at all, lol!

But Lim Ji Yeon seemed solid in The Treacherous from the parts I watched. Her voiced sounded a little more cracky and I thought it a nice touch. Plus the dance scene and attempted assassination was better choreographed than in Moon Lovers.

0

This is what I've bee thinking since I found out about the drama! I arrived to the kdrama world late but she caught my eye in House of bluebird! She's better than some experienced ators too, so please may the rating be highhhh! Let's do this together!!

I really enjoy Yoon Kyun Sang in his last 2 dramas. Chae soo bin even her cameo in Shopping King Louie finale episode was cute. Its too bad so far the plot line is casting a grim light on the character cause i would love a more puppy-ish adorable love story. Lets see how it comes out. yeah, it was amazing how everyone had chemistry - I never felt bored or wanted any interactions between two characters to end because they all kept it so engaging.

Eunji needs to return to acting, too. She hasn't been in anything for way too long!

0

Yay, the username ' Go Go' is back!!

I'm currently rewatching Sassy go go so news about the cast makes me happy.

Now, where is that Lee Won Geon?

0

He was just in The Good Wife and he's had supporting roles in a couple of movies this year - one of them with Kim Ki-duk, no less.

I hope he gets better roles/offers too, tvn these days seems to have closed itself off to new actors altogether so I hope jtbc or sth takes a chance on him, he's charming and has quite an unconventional vibe when he's in lead (charm offensive, whoa).

0

Every time an idol is cast in a drama I find myself screaming WHY NOT EUNJIIII?!?!

She's actually talented. Did you guys know she had no acting experience before Answer Me 1997? Like, she didn't even receive any formal training for acting. And yet she killed it in her role so thoroughly.

That boggles my mind.

0

Lee Won Geon in a Kim Ki Duk movie?!! O_O!!!

What is that director with affinity for everything morbid and WTF, going to do to our poor puppy?

Urgh, now I have to watch to find out. Kim Ki Duk's movie frighting more than horror movies.

On the one hand, I really want to see Honey Lee in a leading role, on the other hand I think that taking on the second fiddle roles also allows her to play the more interesting characters.
It's what I thought, when I watched "Come back Ajusshi": there probably won't ever be a divorced (or nearly divorced) alcohol addicted female as the main character of a Korean TV-Drama...
The casting of Honey Lee makes me hope, that we will get a Jang No-suk that is not only reduced to being a femme fatale but a more complex character.

Honestly I'm trying not to get my hopes up but I can't help to wonder if Chae Soo-bin's character being a widow (and probably trying to seduce King Yeonsan) means that we will also depart from the female lead being over the top innocent. Ha, but my experience with k-dramas teaches me that her husband actually died before the wedding night... (but then she wouldn't have known the husband enough to go on a revenge mission for him, wouldn't she?)

This Rebel Hong Gil-dong is not going to end up with any of the ladies (poor guy). His first love will be married to the king and the other is a widow. At least Chae Soo-bin's character is not going to be stuck in the palace.

I like Honey Lee more when she plays the Queen Daemok type. Neither good nor evil, just trying to survive. I think she'd be great as concubine Jang. Another character to remember her by.

Ooooh! I'm looking forward to seeing a new drama by writer Hwang Jin-young of KING'S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK-HYANG. There were so many aspects of that show that I loved to bits, not least of which were memorable characters and a happy ending for a sageuk. The dadgum Sochi Olympics and year-end holidays played havoc with the broadcast schedule, resulting in 12 dropped episodes and not quite the final resolution the drama and its characters deserved... but it still worked. The story had a lot of heart, and a terrific ensemble cast brought it to life for 108 episodes.

It'll be fun to see Kim Ji-suk return to Joseon playing a killer who sounds like a kissin' cousin to the one who stalked him and General Choi in CHUNO.

I really liked her in moonlight though she didn't have that much screen time. Her role in that was kind of modern where she tried to pursue the crown prince, but instead of hating her for it (considering she is not the OTP), she made me sympathise with her. Also, she was really pretty in hanbok and joseon hairstyle, so happy to see her in another saguek.

I see her some of her parts in Moonlights. Although I don't think she is that great in sageuk yet, but I think she can improve. Besides her screen times was not that much so it will unfair to judge her perfomance in sageuk solely on that. I have seen many other actresses who do better job in sageuk for first timer, but I think we don't have to worry about her. She can emote and can handle heavier role, that's what matters.

She is not a Gong Seung-yeon sageuk noobie that makes you want to see her in another sageuk so I don't know.
Her character in Moonlight was like an afterthought. She was there and then tossed out at the end in favor of the fans because no one wanted Yeong to marry anyone but Ra-on.

At least this writer has co-written a sageuk before and BSB would have more to work with and more screen time. I hope this writer is not the fan pleasing type.

Seo Hyun-jin has been in a lot of sageuks. Good sageuks too. She debut drama was a sageuk. She stole the show from the leading lady in The Duo solidifying her as a sageuk actress. That was way before King's Daughter came around.

Sageuk these days aren't the same as they used to be.With sageuk writers who strive to keep it close to the tradition and custom of the era. Distorting history at least that makes sense.

It's kind of hard to see CSB's sageuk potential in a dress up sageuk like Moonlight. I'm not so sure about this one either.
Maybe this writer/director will surprise us.

@Kiara - I think, with any sageuk that has a fantasy-ish premise, we may as well take it for granted that it's just for the dressup and not a 'serious' sageuk. I wonder what the last proper sageuk to air on Korean tv was? Maybe Jung Do-jeon? Or would the Jingbirok fit the bill?

Yes both. I think Jingbirok was the latest and there is a docu-drama special version of it too.
There used to be a good mix but fantasy sageuks are much more appealing now and cheaper to make unless it's pre produced.

0

Yes! Really good! She was 2nd lead but now the typical bitchy she was polite and beautiful and didn't hate on the relationship between the Crown Prince and his lover once she found out. She just let him have his lover which made everyone feel sorry for her. Ooh this casting seems pretty good. But I'm really excited for Kim Ji-suk!!! So happy to see him in a new role. Quite dark and different from his recent role in Oh Hae Young Again.

I'm glad we have experienced actors for the 2nd leads. Everyone will be nice and complex/deep.

I can't wait to see Kim Ji Suk be evil. I'll probably stay in love with him though.

That revenge plot tho! I hope she gets the king in episode 12 and we spend the rest of the drama figuring out how Honey & Kyun-sang will treat the ultimate act of treason. Just kill him!
..... Although why is the king to blame?

Might just be my next sageuk. I don't do well with finishing them but maybe for this cast.

King Yeonsan-gun is known to be a tyrant in history.
He probably has something to do with her husband's death.

When Yoon Kyun Sang was starting out, whenever I saw articles about him, I always misread it as Yoon Kye Sang (Honey Lee's boyfriend). Now he's getting very popular, I won't get mixed up anymore!

Too late to the party coz no internet for 6 more days ㅠㅠ Good to see my baby Kyunsang getting a lead role. I hope this drama is good coz I couldn't finish Doctors even for him. Hong Gildong, please be badass!

I, too, was wishing for a lead role for Honey Lee. It's been so long. Should have known better than to have my hopes up from the initial casting news. Pfft. Haha. But hey, I'm still all aboard this train for her. Looking forward to another nuanced and compelling turn from Honey Lee.

Here's to hoping for cohesive writing, drawn out characters and strong performances all around for this drama.

Lately, a sageuk heroine would start off well then turns into a damsel in distress halfway through the story.
Concubine Jang is more compelling of a character for her to portray. She is talented and it would awesome if they let her play the gayageum in the drama as part of her story.

Yep, I feel that Concubine Jang would give her more legroom for a layered performance. Can't wait. :)

Re: gayageum. Right?! Fits with the genre and role as well. And I love that epik high collab!

I'd love to see her as a lead with a good sageuk political writer like Jung Hyun-min or Park Kyung-soo in any form, modern or sageuk.

I had to look up the writers you mentioned and so far, the only thing I've seen are 2 episodes of Assembly.

Glad to have bumped into you here though. I'm a new fan of Honey Lee's, having seen Come Back Ajussi just a couple of months back. Since then, I've been scouring the net for anything and everything. And it seems that the more I see of her in dramas, interviews, variety shows and musical performances - just all the subbed ones unfortunately - I become more in awe of just how a multi-hyphenated talented lady she is.
