A classroom brawl breaks out in mystery drama Solomon’s Perjury

I’m pretty excited for JTBC’s high school mystery drama Solomon’s Perjury, the adaptation of a Japanese novel and film about students who take justice into their own hands when a classmate dies on Christmas Eve, and the school authorities try to cover it up. It evokes White Christmas associations for me, and I’m hoping for something similarly dark and spine-tingling. Our first peek at the drama includes stills of a fight breaking out in the school, and a teaser that’s really more of a pre-teaser.

The new youth drama stars child actress Kim Hyun-soo (Joseon Gunman, You From Another Star) as one of the top-ranking students of a prestigious, competitive high school full of wealthy classmates. She’s a model student with a strong sense of justice, and when she finds that the school administration wants to cover up the suspected murder of a student, she leads the charge in holding a student trial to get to the truth. Acting as the prosecutor in the case, she’ll work to unravel the secrets that everyone has.

Jo Jae-hyun (Master–God of Noodle) plays a former prosecutor who now works as legal counsel for the school foundation, and Jang Dong-yoon (Female Employees at a Game Company) plays his adoptive son, a student with a secret that must be kept, who ends up a central figure in the trial.

The stills feature a violent fight between two key characters in the story: Seo Young-joo (Gold Rainbow, Snowy Road), a bullied student whose presence in school is compared to that of a ghost, and Baek Chul-min (Kill Me, Heal Me), the school bully who’s described as a tyrant. Violence of this kind is so common an occurrence at their school that everyone turns a blind eye to it, but once the trial begins, bully, bullied, and onlooker are said to take on very different roles once they become plaintiff, attorney, or defendant.

The other major character is Seo Ji-hoon (Signal, Legendary Shuttle), pictured with Kim Hyun-soo as they walk in on the classroom fight. He’s described as cold and sharp-tongued, but he softens as he becomes friends with the heroine, and then as he takes on the role of attorney during the trial, he becomes crucial to solving the case.

The big star of the show’s first teaser is font, so I wouldn’t even count it as a teaser, but it says (likely from the perspective of the heroine), “A friend died. And the indictment that came flying in: ‘He was murdered.’ The school, the police, the media told us: ‘Don’t do anything. Stay still.’ So what happened? If we’re young, do we not have thoughts, or feelings, or opinions?” A quote from the original novel by Miyabe Miyuki pops up and says, “Right is always that way—if you speak it out loud, it becomes immoderate.” Then the narrator closes with: “The trial has already begun. At our hand.” I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to watch the drama unfold at this school.

Solomon’s Perjury will air on Fridays and Saturdays following This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair. It premieres December 9.

Plot is quite good and is done by JTBC so i am quite hopeful of it. Though, i can clearly feel the korean spin on it.

Lol i totally feel you. Reading the description i could definitely say this is a korean drama. I hope they keep the simplistic way the original story is presented like the japanese movie counterpart. I like how the story take such a serious case by doing it in a simplistic way yet has its own convoluted way of being unfold. Not overly dramatic, not overly twisted. Anyway i'm checking this out cause I like Kim Hyun Soo and other actors look promising.

I'm glad Jo Jae-hyun is in this drama because I'm not familiar with most of these young actors beside Kim Hyun-soo and Seo Ji-hoon from his film roles.

jTBC <3. Hope it's going to be good even with a noobie writer.

Ooops I meant Seo Young-joo not Seo Ji-hoon.

Now that tvN has basically shut itself off as an avenue for rookies to prove themselves and has gone down the route of Known Names Only (unless it's for Answer Me), it's left to JTBC to be the one experimenting with younger/newer cast.

Yes this is a great opportunity for Kim Hyun-soo and Seo Young-joo who who are not as well known as some of the child actors of their generation. They were both in the movie The Treacherous playing teen version of the main characters.

I am very excited for Seo Yong Joong. He was the youngest actor to win at Tokyo international Film Festival back in 2012, for his film "the juvenile offender".

Same here. I'm excited for him.

Just by looking at his stills I felt he would be the main lead besides the girl? But he's the third mentioned name in the drama credit pages. I'm a bit disappointed :/

Me too! I've always felt he had lots of talent.

I really happy with Kim Hyun-soo casting. She has a really outstanding filmography but she never got the chance to be in the limelight on her own (I wonder though, Kim Yoo-jung and Kim So-hyun were very popular with their, small, but famous roles in past and I wonder why Kim Hyun-soo never was that popular even with YFAS), so I'm happy she got a lead role in a drama, really really happy about it.

The 3 young Kims (Yoo-jung,So-hyun,Sae-ron) were not just limited to movies and dramas. They did modeling and CFs etc so that helps skyrocket their popularity. They are always on tv whether they are acting in a drama or not.

Yoo-jung started acting at 4yrs olds, So-hyun and Sae-ron at around 8 or 9yrs old so Yoo-jung has been around longer with more projects.
So-hyun is focusing more on acting so we'd be seeing more of her than the other two who has school and career to juggle at the same time.

I'd love a late teen version of Queen's Classroom with all 3 of them and the rest of the other child actors before they all grow out of their teen.

This drama seems much better than what I've expected. Love the ensemble cast. So many new faces. Hopefully, it will (re)discover their talents and potentials.

Thank you JTBC for keeping your promise to cast fresh faces and young rising actors/actresses instead of well-known ones.
It really gives me White Christmas vibes which made me intrigued.

I am super excited about this drama too. The premise sounds interesting and I have always really liked whodunit type of stories. Also, its a jtbc dram

*also its a jtbc drama, so we can expect certain quality. But I hope this is a whodunit story and not like we know who the murderer is (in the starting episodes) and the story is about whether he gets punished or goes free. either way, I am looking forward to it.

I watched the Japanese movies this drama is based on and I loved it. I'm looking forward as to how they're going to do it in a Korean setting.

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out who's playing who from the original, I guess they might have changed or added characters to suit the running time of a drama better. At least I finally know who's playing the school bully (he looks a bit too well put together in that pic though, Hiroya Shimizu had sort of disheveled long hair with blonde locks and generally looked like a mess, which suited the character better). I've never seen any of these kids in anything except Seo Young-ju and I am pretty excited to see some hopefully talented fresh faces.

I always knew Kim Hyun-soo as "that kid who is in EVERYTHING" because when I started to really get into K-Dramas she always happened to be in them. YFAS, Good Doctor, Gaksital... I'm so happy to see her leading her own drama now!

The plot also gives me White Christmas vibes, but I won't put my expectations as high as that drama, haha. I'd be setting myself up for disappointment if I did that. It's interesting because White Christmas has always given be J-Drama vibes and this drama is based off of a Japanese book/movie.

Love that we're going to be seeing some lesser known faces in this. I have my favorites, but I do get annoyed when I keep seeing the same people in drama after drama when I know there's some "rookie" talent that deserve attention too.

Yesss i cannot wait for this. I love that they cast young age appropriate actors and actresses and that a host of them are unknown. Yes bring on the new discoveries who will hopefully go on to have long lasting careers.

Seo Young-ju is so talented and I'm so happy to see him on drama screen again. Kim Hyun-soo is a really good actress who imho is a scene stealer, I am happy she is the lead her. Omo can it it be December 9th already (well I need tomorrow to come first so I can watch my Gilmore Girls revival).

JTBC had proven that they are different from their fellow general cable channels in their commitment to keep drama productions. Also, they've proven themselves to be a strong competitor against tvN and the Free to air network dramas. And with the network's sudden rise in the ratings, I'm hoping that JTBC will increase their drama production.

Anyways, looking forward to this drama :D

I don't really like the music of the trailer, I hope the drama itself won't be as light as the music sounds. Still, the plot sounds fantastic and I'll definitely be catching the first episode to see how it goes.

"Jo Jae-hyun plays a former prosecutor who now works as legal counsel for the school foundation."

Now we know that in an alternative universe after Punch, Lee Tae Joon was released on parole and now has the right to work, as long he doesn't stay close to the prosecution office.

And you don't serve him jajangmyun because he just shuts down and cries in his office all day.

Please don't throw too much romance tropes here. JTBC, I beg you. Please prove me wrong.
It was a novel and movies, so turning it to drama series has space to add things. But don't become another School 2015. I know it's cable so it won't be as bad as if it in big 3, but Liar Game also in cable and they add some unnecessary drama to it.

The young girl Kim Hyun-soo is someone to watch for. I recently watched her movie with Kim Hye Soo - Goodbye Single, man was I completely surprised. I went into it hoping for a light comedic film but it was so full of heart that it has become one of my fave Korean movies :)
