Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 12

There’s plenty of suffering to go around this hour, both the internal and external kind. Our hero seems to be the only one who knows what he wants and is fully intent on getting it, though he’s up against some new resistance in the form of Su’s guilt. He might be the only one who can save her now—but it’s less about saving her from her situation, and more about saving her from herself.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

King Taejo orders his son and fourth prince So to go to China (specifically the Later Jin dynasty) as an ambassador. So agrees to do as he’s told, but he asks for the king to allow Su to continue working in the palace.

The king agrees, only for as long as it takes for So to leave the room. Then he tells Astronomer Choi to send Su to a place where none of the princes will be able to see her again—if So won’t let her go, then he’ll make it so he has no choice.

Astronomer Choi finds Su in the late Court Lady Oh’s room, and offers Su some comfort when it comes to her mentor’s death. But then he informs her that she’s to leave the palace, effective immediately.

Su just sighs in resignation as she asks where it is that she’ll have to go. Meanwhile, So packs his belongings, including the makeup needed to cover his scar. Before she goes, Su makes sure to find So, despite having to limp because of her wounds.

They go for a slow walk, where So gives her pointers on how to best get over her pain and grief. If she works hard, she’ll be able to forget, which Su turns back onto him: “You should forget me now.” So doesn’t take her seriously, and only asks that she stay in the palace and wait for him.

“I will not wait for you,” she replies, handing back the hairpin he gave her. “This happened to you because you tried to help me,” she adds, referencing his new appointment to go to Later Jin. She feels bad because she knows how happy he was to be allowed into the palace, but now he’s having to leave because of her.

Using a hand on her waist, So pulls her closer, and leans in for a kiss. At the last moment, Su turns her head, and So just smiles. “I said I would get your permission,” he says in light admonishment.

Then, with her guard down, So steals a very quick kiss. “I lied,” he explains with a Cheshire grin. He takes the hairpin in her hand and says he’ll use it as a good luck talisman, since he’ll be back soon. But as he walks away, Su thinks to herself that she won’t be waiting for him, even though he risked his life for her and called her his.

As he turns around and waves at her with the pin in his hand, Su thinks to herself that she can’t help but be afraid every time they meet. Despite knowing that her heart had been in someone else’s hands, she wonders, “Why is it so difficult to let you go?”

Wook sees her limping up the steps upon her return to the palace, but can’t bring himself to say anything to her. She turns around to see him turned away from her, and he walks away from her purposefully. Tears well in her eyes, but she says nothing. Only when she’s turned away does Wook chance a look back at her.

So returns to wearing a mask on his journey to Jin, while Su is sent out of the palace with a small bundle of her belongings. Fourteenth prince Jung finds Wook to tell him that Su’s gone. Wook leaps to his feet and checks Su’s room, which is now devoid of her presence.

Knowing that she’s been cast out, Wook slowly sinks to the ground, crying. “Su-ya… if you just leave like this…” He reaches out a trembling hand to her bedding, before he throws it in a rage and cries out, “Su-ya!”

Outside the palace, Su turns as if she’s heard it. Maybe she did.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong talks casually about that “pesky creature” who’s now dead to Princess Yeonhwa, referencing Court Lady Oh. Now that she’s seen Yeonhwa’s scheming side, the evil queen thinks that they’re very much alike, but Yeonhwa puts the kibosh on this notion by reminding her that her own mother, Queen Sinjeong, was exiled for supposedly causing Court Lady Oh’s miscarriage.

Though she doesn’t outright claim that the evil queen was to blame for the miscarriage, everyone knows that she’s the reason Court Lady Oh, the woman the king loved the most, had to die. If her own mother could be exiled for causing a miscarriage, then Queen Sinmyeongsunseong is in for much worse—so Yeonhwa knows an alliance would be foolish.

The evil queen says that Yeonhwa is just as culpable as she is, which makes the princess laugh. Because she drank the poison, she’s free of suspicion, and anyone else who was involved is either dead or gone. “You are alone now, Your Majesty. Do not make my mother get on her knees ever again,” Yeonhwa adds as a warning.

Third prince Yo is back, and having overheard the conversation, he tells his mother that he can’t help but like Yeonhwa for her gumption. His mother warns him to stay away from her, while Yo seems to think of it as a challenge. Besides, his uncle, Wang Shik-ryeom, has offered to support his potential rise to the throne.

One year later, the 26th year of Taejo’s reign. King Taejo is apparently not long bound for this world, and third prince Yo taunts his brothers that the king may very well decide that he should have the throne.

Now that Yo’s returned to the palace with supporters ready to place him in power, Crown Prince Mu worries that the king has made it so that anyone can take the crown. Astronomer Choi assures him that the king is only using this opportunity to find out who’s on Mu’s side, but Mu worries that those close to him will be the ones to pay for the king’s experiment.

At a festival held for King Taejo, princess-in-disguise Woo-hee is among the group of sword dancers performing for him. Suddenly, she breaks from the others, jumps onto the king’s table, and stabs him with her sword.

Of course, it’s just a daydream on her part, since she’s just practicing her sword dance. Thirteenth prince Baek-ah calls her out for getting the move wrong, since he’s providing the accompaniment. Does no one pay attention to how weird a job this is for a prince to have?

Baek-ah ends up inches from Woo-hee’s face during his admonishment, which makes her acutely aware of their proximity. But when he mentions that “the wife” has prepared food for him, her eyes go wide: “You’re married?”

Seeing her face, he pounces on the chance to taunt her as he asks if him being married would bother her. She’s quick to demur, though she’s curious to know how long he’s been married, if he has children, etc. Baek-ah continues to tout his imaginary family until he tells her that the wife he was referring to was his father’s wife, aka his mother, and gives her the modern “Okay” hand signal that Su taught him. Hah.

Tenth prince Eun scoffs at his wife for testing whether he read a book she gave him, even going so far as to bet his own wrist that he read it. Soon-deok draws a line on his wrist and says that it’s hers now, as are his eyes and nose (which she draws circles around, hah).

He tells her she might as well take all of him, but makes an exception when she tries to mark his finger—that’s Su’s, he says. When she turns away, Eun nervously asks if she’s crying, but then a dagger comes flying at them. Soon-deok protects him from it, but it cuts her hair tie in the process, causing her hair to flow loose around her face.

It was her dad who threw the dagger to test her reflexes, and she chastises him for scaring her husband. But when she offers to blow on Eun’s booboo from the fall, Grand General Park just gapes.

Yo offers Princess Yeonhwa a ring along with the promise that he’ll divorce his wife once he becomes king, and make Yeonhwa his queen. She’s not buying it, since Yo’s father-in-law is the current Minister of the Left, Park Young-gyu, and he’d be crazy to lose that alliance.

But Yo says he’ll only need Minister Park’s support before he becomes king, and not after. He deliberately places the ring on Yeonhwa’s finger even after she pushes it back toward him, though Wook’s appearance gives her a chance to pull her hand back.

Though Wook is slightly hostile toward him, Yo reminds him that with the king about to release teachings for his descendants, it means that there’ll be a major shift soon. Yo wonders if they should just attack first and get their father out of the way before that happens, but at Wook’s admonishment, he claims he was only joking.

Yo leaves, but not before reminding Wook of his promise to support him when the time comes. Yeonhwa is quick to call Wook out for making such a bargain—why wouldn’t he try to claim the throne for himself?

But Wook has clearly given this more thought than her, since he knows that whoever goes against the crown prince will become a traitor. However, if he were to rise up against that traitor, then he’d become a hero.

When Yeonhwa asks what would happen if Yo were to end up betraying him, Wook’s eyes land on the ring Yo gave her. She’s scandalized when he says it suits her well, knowing full well what he means: “Are you telling me to become a hostage?” With a humorless smile, Wook tells her to call it what she likes. “We owe each other a great debt, do we not? You should put up with this much.” Damn, Wook. That’s cold.

We find Su working as a lowly water maid for a gisaeng house, though her reputation for once being a court lady in Damiwon is well known amongst the other girls. They grow angry when the still-crippled Su refuses to gossip about any of the princes with them, and deliberately trip her when she tries to leave.

They accuse her of killing her own superior, calling her bad luck. They throw her laundry back into the river, and as Su struggles to collect it all, Wook and Jung happen to see her struggle. Wook is the first to turn away.

Once in the palace, Wook confronts Jung over deliberately taking him to see Su. Wook claims to be indifferent to her plight, but Jung knows that he loved Su once, so what’s the reason he can’t go to her? Wook claims that it’s because he can’t go against the king, but Jung doesn’t quite look like he buys it.

That night, Wook finds Su eating a meager meal alone. She sets it aside when she sees him and rises unsteadily, causing Wook to ask if her leg still pains her—he knows Jung has been sending her medicine. In a flat tone, she tells him that it only bothers her sometimes, but that she’s fine otherwise.

“Do you hate me?” Wook asks tentatively. Su’s eyes fill with tears as she looks blankly forward. Wook explains that he couldn’t come because he couldn’t promise her anything, and that it’s his own shame over being so useless to her.

Because the king was so upset over Court Lady Oh, he explains, he couldn’t even dare to bring up the idea of marrying her to his father. Only then does Su speak up: “Did you miss me? Even once? Has there been a time when you missed me?”

After a pause, Wook quietly replies, “Every day. I longed for you every moment.” Su takes this in for a moment, her expression softening with relief as she says, “That is all I need then. That is enough.” But when Wook says that everything will get better once he has more power, Su tells him not to put himself in danger on her behalf.

With tears in his own eyes, Wook can only tell her to keep herself safe. “Please don’t make me feel sorrier than I do,” he adds, before abruptly leaving. A tear snakes down Su’s cheek as she watches him go.

So returns from Later Jin, and updates his father on the political goings-on there, including a possible conflict between Jin and the Khitan. King Taejo wants to send him back to deal with it but So refuses, since he knows his father broke the promise he made to keep Su in the palace when he left.

His father asks if he still has feelings for Su, which soon turns into a tirade about how kings should be willing to throw anyone and anything away. So retorts that he isn’t a king and won’t become one, so that rule doesn’t apply to him. He even adds in a subtle threat that if the king wants him to remain as an ally for Crown Prince Mu, then he shouldn’t make things harder for him. “I, too, will live like a human now.”

Grand General Park does some damage control once So leaves, but it’s not that Taejo is upset with So’s actions—he’s actually pleased with his new attitude. “Now, he will not lose no matter who he fights,” the king says, adding that only now will he be able to die in peace.

As Su hangs laundry to dry, she thinks she sees a vision of So, only to turn around and find nothing there. But then she stops suddenly, feeling a presence behind her. “You never did listen,” So’s voice says.

He wraps his arms around her from behind and adds, “I missed you.” Su tells him that he shouldn’t be there as she pulls away from his grasp, but he just takes her work-roughened hands in his and smiles: “You are beautiful, as always.”

That’s when she finally notices his mask, which breaks her out of her stupor. Suddenly she’s all questions, but he unmasks himself to reveal a perfectly covered scar beneath. “I didn’t take it off so I wouldn’t forget you,” he says. “I was determined to come back to you.”

Su reminds him that she’s just a water maid now, and therefore not in a position to be having any contact with him. She’s glad he returned safe, and now he knows she’s fine. That should be enough.

She tries to limp away from him, but So grabs her by the wrist, claiming that he’ll find a way to fix her situation. Su finally breaks and pulls away from him, half-crying that she’s trying to just forget everything through hard labor. But what she doesn’t say aloud is, “You must put a stop to your affections toward me.”

So says he’ll help her just the way she helped him, and together, they’ll find a way for her to forget, without having to live the way she’s living. In voiceover, Su says, “Please do not throw yourself away because of me.” But aloud, she says that So’s the one she wants to avoid—when she looks at him, she’s reminded of everything she’s trying to forget.

She tells him to forget about her too, which is the only way no one will get hurt. She returns to her room, where she’s approached by Astronomer Choi. Hmm.

King Taejo’s health is failing, so as a last resort, Astronomer Choi serves him a specially concocted tea to bring back his appetite. Taejo knows upon tasting it that Su made it, and so he tells Choi to bring her to him.

Quick cut to Princess Yeonhwa asking So to marry her. (This seems sudden.) She tells him that she’s thought about the kind of person she is, and that she’s not satisfied with her lot. She wants power, which means she wants the throne.

So smiles gently at her as he replies that he’s the opposite of the kind of person she’s looking for, which Yeonhwa claims to know already. But what she wasn’t counting on was that she was a woman with feelings, as she admits, “I have loved you for a long time. I am destined to be with you.” (She mimics the same words Yo said about the two of them.)

After a long silence, So says that when he was very young, someone told him he was fated to be king—but that’s the day he received the scar on his face. He wasn’t even treated as a prince, let alone a king. “We’re destined to be?” he all but scoffs. “I don’t believe in destiny. And there’s someone else I want.” Yeonhwa knows he’s talking about Su, and warns that he’ll ruin his future if he ties his fate to such an unlucky girl.

“I wouldn’t even have had a future if it weren’t for Su,” So replies. “Now that I’ve said it, I know for certain—without her, I’m nothing.”

Su limps into the throne room to meet the ailing king, who readily drinks the tea she made him. Looking at him, Su recognizes the same symptoms she once saw in her own grandpa, and guesses that he doesn’t have much time left.

Taejo seems to read her thoughts, and then asks, “Where did you come from?” He admits that he looked into her after Court Lady Oh’s death, and after questioning anyone who ever knew her, he concluded that she became a completely different person. But then, he astutely tells her that he thinks she’s similar to Astronomer Choi: “You know the future, and we do not.”

He asks her if she knows So was fated to become king, and sighs that if Crown Prince Mu and So are both destined to become king, no one knows what will happen. He knows she’ll be able to see it all happen, but warns her against getting involved.

Su’s only request is that the king send her away instead, because she doesn’t have the courage to live in the palace anymore. Taejo’s advice is for her to learn to close her eyes to the things she can’t fix with her own strength, otherwise, her situation will never change.

“Do not get so hung up on the future that you lose what you have now,” the king adds. “If [Court Lady Oh] called you her daughter, then you are a daughter to me, which is why I am giving you this advice.” Oh, now she’s like a daughter to you?

As Su leaves the palace, she suddenly finds herself surrounded by the sounds of battle in the courtyard. A premonition of events to come, perhaps.

Meanwhile, Woo-hee cuts herself while practicing her sword dance, and in his worry, Baek-ah discovers scars from old cuts crisscrossing her wrists. He knows better than to ask, so he asks if he can hold her instead. She shakes her head, but he pulls her in anyway.

He says he’s sorry for any hardship she endured, even though he wasn’t around then. “I want only good things to happen for you, and I want to make you happy now. Trust me.” Woo-hee pulls away, angrily asking who he thinks he is to promise such things. When she leaves, Baek-ah quietly admits, “I still have more to confess to you.”

Su happens to see Woo-hee crying, and next thing we know, the two are sitting down for a chat. She seems to know that it has something to do with Baek-ah, which makes Woo-hee question how Su knows him. They talk as if they know each other, which must’ve come about because Su works as a maid for Woo-hee’s gibang.

To cover for Baek-ah (since Woo-hee doesn’t know he’s a prince), Su claims she met him before she entered the palace. She tells Woo-hee that he’s a good person who she shouldn’t be pushing away, but Woo-hee claims she doesn’t have a choice.

Woo-hee fills in some of the gaps on how she and Su know each other, as she says both of them bonded over their shared hardships. She wants Su to do her makeup for the big ceremony tomorrow, because she wants it so that Baek-ah will look at her once and never forget her. “That’s how I want to be remembered,” she says more quietly.

After Yo plots with Minister Park to use Woo-hee to kill the king at the ceremony, he pretends to feign disinterest in whether the king does or doesn’t attend. But that’s because he knows Wook has his back, since Wook is the one who convinces the king to attend.

Yo looks on approvingly as Wook puts his prince’s garb over another outfit. The ailing king presides over the ceremony, but So waits outside to catch Su so he can give her back the hairpin. “Let’s get married,” he says suddenly.

If she marries him, he says, she can leave the gyobang (gisaeng house that focused more on the arts) as well as the palace. At her reluctance, he adds that they can divorce after he gets her out of the palace—all she has to say is yes.

Of course, Su doesn’t, because she doesn’t want to make So leave the palace. So claims to not care if he’s with his father or not, to which Su asks, “What if you were to become king? Would you still leave?” So: “If I were king, would you leave with me?”

Handing her back the hairpin, So smiles a bit as he asks her to come with him—she’s still his, after all. Su seems to waver for a moment, but then she gives the hairpin back. She can’t marry him, she says, and turns to see that Wook has overheard the entire conversation.

Wook grabs So before he can chase after her, telling him not to fill her head with lies that he, a prince, could marry a water maid like her. “If I say it’s marriage, then it’s marriage,” So fires back. But then Wook reminds him that he’s the reason Su’s in such a lowly state, which is why he can’t forgive him.

But So won’t take the blame from him, and says that he gave him everything he needed to prove Su’s innocence. Wook’s uselessness is the reason Su’s there, he adds, which only makes Wook grab his half-brother by the collar.

At the ceremony, Woo-hee takes part in the sword dance. As the music crescendos, she sees Baek-ah in the crowd, realizing from his clothes that he’s a prince. Baek-ah watches her gaze and has a realization of his own: She was practicing the wrong movements earlier because she had another plan in mind.

As Woo-hee rushes the king, Baek-ah jumps in front of her and takes the sword meant for his father. He couldn’t just tackle her?

Back with the two warring men, So tells Wook to stop pretending like he cares about Su—he can just turn his back on her like he already has. But he can see whatever Wook’s wearing underneath his robes by the hold he has on him.

And then, quick cut back to Baek-ah, who pulls back from Woo-hee.

COMMENTS

Well, now I’m more inclined to think that Episode 11 was a lucky fluke. I feel spoiled from having a clear emotional through line that we could easily follow to having the sort of hodgepodge of scenes we got in this episode, where I was left struggling to figure out who we were following and what we should be rooting for them to accomplish. Was this about Su? So? Woo-hee? Killing the king? Focus, Moon Lovers! Focus.

I had a feeling we were in for a ride when that time skip rolled around, since we were already back to being excluded from the events of the episode—and then suddenly, we were dropped into the story a year later without even one exposition fairy to help catch us up. It was disorienting, and for the remainder of the episode I couldn’t help but feel like the show was just trying to keep itself afloat.

The rapid-fire succession of scenes would’ve been much easier to swallow if we had at least one point to anchor us, but we were effectively shut out from seeing Su’s point of view. What she’s been through has been extraordinary and more than enough to cause a person to shut down—but she’s still our heroine, and we need her to at least try to play an active role in events. Su’s biggest issue has been her lack of proactivity, which we could somewhat blame on circumstance before. And even now, we can point to circumstance as being the reason why she can’t help herself, only now she’s willingly given up on trying.

So without her even making an effort to change her fate, and with her being completely resigned to suffering in silence, I’m not sure what we’re supposed to want for her. Obviously, any viewer will want her to snap out of the funk she’s in, but to what end? It’d be great if So really could swoop in to save the day here, but Wook may have a point about his marriage solution not being that feasible. Even so, what is it that Su actually wants? For a hot second, her goal was to try and dissuade So from fulfilling his destiny. I can see why that’s changed now, but that doesn’t mean that she should be the one helping history along by suggesting that So should become king. What does she want to happen?

At least So’s trying, and in an hour so full of doom and gloom, that counts for a lot. Right now I’ve got all my hopes pinned on him, though it’s interesting to note how his father’s opinion has changed in such a short while. Then again, King Taejo seemed to be much more open to a lot of things, considering that he realized that Su was a time traveler. If he’d figured this out about her before and knew that it would’ve made Court Lady Oh happy for him to treat her as a daughter, why did that change now, after a year of hard labor? Was it really just that one cup of tea? More than ever, that would’ve been a scene to hear Su say something. Anything. Or for her to even realize that Astronomer Choi may know more than he’s letting on, and that he could be her ticket out of her misery. But that’d mean she’d have to want something first. So c’mon, Su. You’re from the future. Act like it.

Oho, the king wants So to take the throne. And finally, I’m liking Wook that been taken to the dark side. Instead of romance, I’m watching this for the throne game and the battle.
And sudden revelation that haesoo and woohee is bff, and the 1 year timeskip. And the king is so weak already, why is there an assassination plot? Isn’t it better to wait out, so that you won’t be seen in a bad light? Or they want to kill him before he announce that CP would really take the throne if he die, to fake a will saying that Yo is the king?
Probs to the king, knowing that haesoo is similar to ji mong, and somewhat encourage her to not let her knowledge of future tamper with her decision “Do not get so hung up on the future that you lose what you have now”. Perhaps that advice will help her with her feeling for So, despite knowing that he will become King, she will treasure his feeling at this moment? Lolz but we are kinda far away from that seeing her reject him every single time, even when he offered that they both leave the palace.

My thoughts exactly about the assassination plot...so pointless.

And they prepared for that assassination more than 1 year, like why?? they easily poison the tea and set up everything in like a week?
And I watched international version, the scene of crown prince saying that the King has made it for everyone to battle the throne was missing. So it totally make no sense of why the sudden assassination, the teaming up of the princes.

Re: length of preparation
That's because the capable women came up with the tea poisoning plot whereas Yo planned the king's assassination. ?
And have you seen Woo-hee's sword dancing skills? Girlfriend obviously needed the time to practice. ?

Hi, Anh; Good catch about the one year planning of the king's assassination! To execute (no pun intended) the plan, they awaited Wang So's return to Goryeo. This plot sounds like it was hatched by the lead character, Kang Gi Tan, of the Monster K-drama, whose revenge plot did not come to fruition until the 50th (final) episode. The "one year later" syndrome came early, that is positioned usually in the final episode. I guess that nothing drama-worthy happened in Goryeo during that span of time. When Taejo asked Hae Soo where she was from, I was hoping that she would laugh maniacally, and reply, "I am from the 21st century. Say hello to Lady OH, when you meet her...soon." Thank the gods, that Moon Lovers... is not 50 episodes long

I think making it 50 episodes long would actually be better for the drama. See the original, is like 35 episodes long, and it was able to narrate the story fully and allot time for its individual characters to flesh out. But Moon Lovers have to cram these rich story and intertwining plot-lines into 20 episodes. So it can really lose it's focus per episode especially when they have to maximize their one hour trying to tell the story. I admit that the editing is very clunky. They could have done a better job with it, but since they are giving out two versions of these drama, it's obviously pretty hard to do. I wish Moon Lovers was at least as long as the original. And that they only have to produce the SBS version.

@biankoy

Technically speaking, C-version merely has 3 episodes more than K-version, because K-version's episodes are 1 hour, and C-verion's episodes are 35-40 min. So 20 x 60min vs 35 x 40min doesn't differ that much ;).

It's just that K-version spent too much screentime on fanservice, so it feels like nothing really happened in the first half of the story.

I think the assassination plot is because they don't really know how sick the king is and they don't want to wait too long for him to die of natural causes. They have probably spent the year building up their military & political strength and I'm guessing all the pieces are in place for them to carry out the coup. If they wait too long, the king & Crown prince supporters may counter-move against them. I'm also guessing that they intend to frame the Crown prince for the assassination and thus eliminate the CP at the same time.

Re: Assassination

Took them a year because Yo needs to grow his political allies first all over Goryeo or wherever. What's the point of killing the king beforehand if no one backs him up for the throne?

I agree about the Wook being taken to the dark side comment. Honestly he's a much more interesting character with an actual goal instead of being the prince who has no job but to take walks around

But that being said I was actually quite aghast at the fact that I even considered Wook to be a second lead who'd at least give some of us the second lead syndrome.

I mean this guy..... He literally has no balls. None.

Th scene where he's telling her that he can't do anything because the king is pissed about lady oh I wish they'd switched the scene to where so is tellingg the king the Su ccant be cast aside or even the part where he refuses to go back just because Su has been taken out of the Damiwon.

I mean seriously, I missed you every single day but I didn't have the guts to come see you or even save you when I saw you in trouble because and then there is so I missed you every single day and I'll defy the king and marry you just to keep you safe and take away even if you leave me in the end.

I think there was a post going on somewhere where it showed the rain scene with Wook walking away and So standing over Su with the caption, the definition of the true man.

So true.

I MEAN SERIOUSLY SU, what's wrong with you? How Are you still pushing away? Are you pushing him away because you like him or are you just stupid?

I have a massive problem right now with the mystical forces who chose Hae Su or Hae Jin whatever her name is to go back. I mean seriously could you find no one better or smarter drowning during an eclipse?

That's why I never jump on wook-su ship, wook on do things when the coast is clear.
and now his priority is the throne, I don't know what's his point of coming back to Su saying he miss her everyday when he's clearly not, he didn't even send her medicine (and Jung aka 14th prince did)
what so hard about that?
and if he already made up his mind, then just have a clean cut with Su already (one thing I like about C-ver, the relationship ended cleanly instead of this dragging romance)

Right! She (for a woman from the future) has accepted everything that has happened to her, without too much protesting. I keep waiting for her to say or at least think to herself, something anything that would make me think that she has retained her future self / identity. But no dice.

but seriously, on top of being spineless he is whiny. He blames YH and then has the gall to blame WS that he is responsible for her condition ... what weed are you smoking dude?

If there is anything that we forgot to take into account that is right from the get-go, Haesoo has the tendency to fall for a JERK. Her modern-day boyfriend? Wook?

And while last week I totally understand Wook's predicament but this episode totally change my view on him that is he is a JERK. Man, you can't give the girl happiness so why can't you just let her live her own life and find happiness with someone else? That is totally selfish of you to want her to continue to hang on to those lingering feelings for you that will lead to nowhere. And worst, he placed the blame on So???? I mean, not owning up to your own incompetency officially making us a USELESS JERK.

I think blaming others is a part of his charater...

he did blame his wife and his family for the marriage he did not want.

Now he blames WS. So much easier than guilt, no ?

0

Him blaming So is really funny.

Yes. Queen Yo took part in assassination plot. But it's his little sist who dragged Su into this mess. And Wook knows that.

0

Honestly, I am so sick of Wook. I have been from the very beginning. I mean, what kind of guy courts his wife's cousin while his wife is sick, waits til said wife dies to realize he (maybe) loved her, but then gets with said cousin immediately after? That should have been Su's sign to just get the heck out of there while she still could. This man clearly has issues.

And Su's just being a baby too. A year passed and you did nothing but wash clothes? Come on. This episode made me feel like she wasn't the main character anymore. and HELLO! Stop pushing So away, you limp noodle. I rolled my eyes so many times during this episode that they actually started to hurt.

The only person that has made any progress in a year is Yo. He was able to replenish his eyeliner supply .

0

But washing clothes is her new job. She's not a free person who can go wherever she likes. In the novel, the female lead washed clothes for 6 years.

0

@Jan

Ugh, how wrecked would her hands and back and knees be after 6 years of scrubbing clothes at the river. :/

0

@Jamie, Yes the hard physical labor of having to wash clothes for 6 years took a toil on her health, add to that her emotional & mental anguish caused by later events, Ruoxi's health deteriorated and she died at the young age of 30+ years.

0

Now I'm really hoping that doesn't happen to Hae Soo. :(

0

Interesting take on Wook's reaction. I actually thought this episode was trying to make it seem like his push for power was DRIVEN by his desire to bring Su back, which is something he could do only if he became king, rather than being in opposition to it.

But yes, major issues with Su right now. I can't tell whether it's that she has no clue how she feels, or she's so passive she's flipped back and forth by every wind. Other than her very pretty looks, I can't tell what it is about her that continues to inspire so much affection in So.

@DramaLea - Agree with you on both points. Especially Wook. He still seems to have genuine feelings for Su and somewhere among all the planning he has going on, I feel, bringing Su back is also at the back of his mind. (Not that I ship them at this stage, but just saying.)
So far I can't bring myself to hate Wook. Partly because I watched the real Kim Ha Neul on Running Man and in many BTS videos of the drama (esp. the one where he rests his head on Hong Jong Hyun’s shoulders) - I.just.cannot. He is such an endearing mixture of cute + shy + good looks to hate - even if it is for a drama. :P

Basically! I have no patience for a character who is a damsel in need of rescue. I get that she is a lowly water maid and isn't in a position to leave or do what she wants. I get that, but from someone who took a few lashes for a maid and someone who gave 10th prince a shiner. To just be this person with the personality of a wet mop is just too much!

And yet, So keeps thinking and planning with her in mind / by his side. So I guess her non plan is working?

In 2016, JiMong was desperate, right before the solar eclipse (... the Tardis did not show up). He needed a time travel companion, and the suicidal HaeJin was the closest person around. The real HaeSoo is 16 years' old, so the naivete and teenage crush on Wookie seems appropriate. 25 years' old Hajin, in the 21st century, would fall for the wolf, Wang So, in a flash.

I have major second lead syndrome!

I honestly don't understand why everyone's hating on Wook so much. We know he's had to protect his mother and sister for the past ten years, when they were banished unfairly because of the Evil Queen. Killing people from the age of 11 was normal to him!

He also married Lady Hae to raise his family's status, and now that he knows that he actually DID love her, how can he dishonour what she did for him?

So has absolutely nothing tying him down, to the point where he doesn't have qualms about just running away with Su. Whereas if Wook did that he would disgrace his mother and sister, and his past marriage to Lady Hae would all have been in vain. Lady Hae also asked him to look after Su, but I don't think she'd be very happy if they were to be exiled and live in disgrace.

I don't agree that he should be so much on the sidelines atm, but I do understand that the only way he could be with Su is if he rises to the throne. Because he still LOVES her. Seemingly forming an alliance with Yo is proof that he's doing everything he thinks he can at the moment.

And if you think about it in modern terms, Wook > So. Not sure about you guys but I'd rather marry someone with a sense of responsibility over someone who obsesses unhealthily over me. That's how stalkers and mental disorders are formed, people!

I am on the same boat as you.
For me, one way to know how a man will treat you is on how he treats his mother/sister. I think Wook loves/respect his mom so much that he don't want his family to suffer just because of his love for HaeSu.

0

@ColourMeHanuel YES so true! No wonder Lady Hae loved him so much, she has a good eye.

@Ren I don't believe that he'd attack anyone first, rather he'd be defending to protect himself and his people. Also, his sister stepped way out of line, and he didn't throw his sister away, he was following her original evil plot to make him king. In his own twisted way...

0

The downside would be, he would throw you away for his family anytime required~ which i guess happens quite often in modern kdramas, where the husbands defend their moms everytime mom and wife are in an argument, then go to persuade their wives to just take it all and promise theyll talk to mom later whenever the moms have left~

Wait~ Thats exactly wook. Giving empty promises in the name of love~

No, if he managed to become king for Su, he'd be free from having to protect his family. His mother had no problem with him marrying Su in the first place, she just didn't want him to put himself in a situation where he'd get himself (and effectively, probably her and Yeonhwa), killed.

I don't think he's thrown her away, he's just been placed in a situation where he can't be by her side. I also don't think any of his promises have been empty, he just couldn't fulfil them due to extenuating circumstances e.g. Yeonhwa, timing, the Evil Queen.

And put yourself in his shoes! Can you honestly say that you'd throw your mother and sister to almost certain death for a man/woman? Wouldn't you rather find a solution that keeps everyone alive?

0

One of the reason why Queen Yoo wants to get rid Hwang Bo household is because Wook is such a strong contender for the throne. It was hinted in... hmmm... episode 5? when Hae Soo was visiting Palace to give her hand made soap.

Who says if he marry Hae Soo his family will be in danger? Yes, they'll loose a chance to gain power, but the other power hungry clans would stop eyeing them. The one who's being paranoid is Yeon Hwa. But Queen Hwang Bo herself told Yeon Hwa not to be afraid of something that hasn't happened yet.

I totally agree with everything you said.
The fact that Evil Queen wants the Wook's family gone is one of the reasons Wook can't fight for Su at the moment- his face when his mother was kneeling before Evil Queen! That's what stopped him from going to Su when she was begging on behalf of Court Lady Oh.
Him marrying Su is not a problem at all in that respect. It's just that she's so taboo at the moment, the king (who has all the power), is furious whenever the princes even TALK to her. Let alone marry her. So yes, his family would probably be in danger if he married Su right now.

0

@yoonks
if you talk about being good to parents, So also tried to treat his mother nicely, he brought gift for her when he just got back from his adoption place (i cant remember the name), he clear out all the evidience (yes, that was too much but still)
and yes, So is obsessive, and violent but he only crossed the line with his forced kiss

I'm not hating wook but his romance with Haesoo is long overdue. So you would pick someone who literally turned your back on you in your most vulnerable time, did not even talk or contact you in some form for a whole year, when Jung was able to at least send medicine, just what is the point of holding onto that love?
and if he still loves, why didn't he try to comfort her in the little ways he could.

and this is a saguek, why whould we impose our modern value onto historical people.

and my personal opinion is that I'm not invest in this show romance, haesoo is not worth it to be the reason for princes to fight over the throne, the real reason is that the princes want power, I rather want the prince battle for the throne to be shown more, how each side strategise and team up

It's not about being good to parents, it's about protecting the people you love, and who are helpless without you. I have no bad feelings towards So in that respect; obviously he went above and beyond what his heinous mother deserves. Also, nobody really needs him.

Don't forget that the first time they met, So pushed Su off his horse. And then constantly threatened to kill her whenever he saw her. It was only when she showed she wasn't scared of him that he became curious, and then did a complete 180 and treated her as his property. Don't get me wrong, I know it's because that's all he knows, and it's how he was brought up, but what if he gets over her later on? Will he do another 180 and kill her?

Whereas Wook was the one who made her want to live again when she first arrived in Goryeo. They genuinely fell for each other, and until very recently had no doubts as to their affections for each other. Yes, I disagree with him completely ignoring her in her times of need the last couple of episodes, but that's how he was brought up too.

I'm not saying either is wrong or right, I'm just pointing out that it's understandable that she still has feelings for the person who essentially saved her, and made her happy and safe for the first time in an unimaginably strange environment.

Also, Su is a modern girl! Why wouldn't we impose our values onto her and her choices? Although she doesn't really act it these days.

But yes, I agree in that Su is not worth this fight right now, but I also think that it's not really about her anymore. It's a battle of pride and greed. If anyone's to blame here it's Wang Geon for being overly ambitious and having so many wives/sons + Yeonhwa. He should've just lived happily with Court Lady Oh........

0

Well you can't really blame Wang Geon either, he married them because of positional politics. Most probably he was forced to marry the Evil Queen by Evil Queen's kin to preserve the "peaceful relationship", the irony. Just blame him for being a hot blooded humping dog.

I am 100% with you. I actually think Wook is my favorite character. I understand why he is getting a lot of hate (for being seemingly passive, being an obstacle to So, etc.) but I do love him and can't wait to see what he does next. Yes, of course, he is unbelievably nice to look at and Kang Ha Neul is doing a killer job portraying him but I believe that, of all the princes, he is the smartest one. He hasn't really put his intelligence to the use of any grand plan yet, but I think that, when he does, epic things will be set in motion. And I do believe he loves Su and wants to protect her. He just does it differently. Yes, he turns away from her but one could also Lady Oh, Su would probably be dead. argue that she's alive thanks to him. It's indirect yes, but he did set the thing in motion. Nobody else thought of that. There was a lot of "Well, Wook, why won't you save her?" but very little action.
I don't even really mind that he turned on his sister. She had no problem sacrificing him for her ambitions and he made it clear that it would change things between them. I'm actually surprised she didn't see that coming. And honestly, I'm really excited for the final battle against So. If done right, it could be SO. AWESOME.

Glad to see Wookie getting some love!

0

TOTALLY agree with everything you said! Tbh I don't understand why the king hasn't acknowledged him in the fight for the throne. He's intelligent, has solid values, and is a great leader.

Everyone also seems to have forgotten that whilst all the other princes were scared of So/ignored him in the first few episodes, Wook was the only one who'd ask him how he was, and stick up for him when he was teased.

Us and @MyGirl2016 should form a club hahhaa

0

Also, the new ep is airing atm and holy moly it's intense. The only problem is that they're not all naked a la The K2.

0

Just wanted to chime in. I like So better but also think Wook doesn't deserve so much hate.

What's funny is the stuff that Wook does is typical of some kdrama leads too:

- Falls in love with our heroine even while he's engaged to another chaebol girl he doesn't like
- Promises to protect the heroine, then becomes useless when heroine is bullied by his whole family
- Separates with heroine for some weird internal reason (though Wook has better reasons here than just "Study in America for 1 Year" plot)
- Breaks his own resolve to stay away from heroine in a moment of weakness (usually when our lead guy gets drunk and angst-confesses that he still misses the girl)

Also re: why does Wook make Yeonhwa marry Yo if it makes YH miserable?

His goal isn't to make his family happy. His goal is to give them power. He sacrificed his own happiness with Su to get it. Yeonhwa should sacrifice that much too since she's the one who cornered Wook into this plan in the first place.

And @yoonks' question: Tbh I don’t understand why the king hasn’t acknowledged him in the fight for the throne. He’s intelligent, has solid values, and is a great leader.

Unfortunately, Wook comes from a weaker clan. You need support or numbers to keep Goryeo together. :( If he puts Wook on the throne, it might just lead to a civil war. It's the same reason he can't just murder Queen Evil in her sleep. Her family is too powerful right now.

0

Wook's sense of family responsibility is great for his mother and sister, but not so much for Hae Soo. He left her to die, and didn't lift a finger to stop it.

So in modern terms, would you still prefer him and his sense of family responsibility, if it meant he would let you unfairly take the fall for his sister's evil deeds, suppress evidence that could free you, and let you suffer the death penalty enacted by the government?

In other words, you would pick him even though he would very clearly not pick you?

Maybe you understand his actions, but Wook is not a person to trust or rely on for Hae Soo. He's shown he's willing to let her hang. Wook is not on Hae Soo's side.

If Wook chooses Su, more people will be affected. Namely his mother, Yeon Hwa, their Hwangbo clan. That's a lot of innocent (minus Yeon Hwa) people to sacrifice (and might be literally) just to save Su. Goryeo is a vicious place to be, hence if he had to choose, he'd rather save a lot of people than just one.

I don't know, but I think if I were in Su's place and Wook decided to save me and let his mother to die, I'd feel such bitter taste in my mouth. Moreover, I don't think a relationship built on such bloody foundation will last. In the end, the others will just die in vain.

0

Having seen something of the modern equivalent of such marriages (as in, ones where women have married men with families that were hostile to them for assorted birth/economic status-related reasons, which is the closest thing we have to a potential Su/Wook marriage), I'd say it's pretty bad when the chips are down and the new daughter-in-law is the one who takes second place in her own marriage.

Things are a-ok as long as there is no conflict, but if and when that hits, I'd much rather be with a man who puts me first instead of one who makes all the promises but still puts me a long way behind his birth family. Assuming, of course, that feelings are reciprocated in both cases.

Even when that sense of responsibility means you come dead last in his order of priorities (said priorities including a family who are hostile to you/could turn hostile in a heartbeat for their own advantage) but he still won't let you go? Are we that willing to take second/last place in one of the main relationships in our lives?

I had some borderline second lead syndrome too but the minute Wook turned his back on Su in that rain, the Wook/Su relationship was dead to me. She still has feelings for him, but he clearly prioritises self-preservation (which is understandable) and power (not quite as sympathetic) over his relationship with her, such as it is. I mean, even freaking Jung stood by her in the rain and sent her medicine, while Wook....walked away and didn't contact her for a year.

I don't see So as a obsessed/stalker to be honest. He's been shunned by everyone since childhood - everyone has either been disgusted or scared of him. Because of a(n inconsequential) scar. Now in modern times, thats not really a problem, some would even find it cool..but in that time period, i can understand why So so desperately clings on to the only person who sees him for him.

For me, So>Wook in any time period. Not just because Jun Ki is hot as hell but also because he seems to be more willing to go the extra mile for the girl he loves. I understand Wook needs to protect his mother and sister. What I didn't like is how he completely and utterly cut Soo off - "the King will not approve". Seriously? You didn't even try! there could be ways, Wook. So, on the other hand said to Taejo, outright that he would just do what he wanted.

You can't say So could have a change of heart and abandon her just because he is more aggressive in his relationships than Wook. I do believe he has his own values - he was nice to that awful mother of his for years despite her nasty attitude. He also said he realises he is nothing without Soo, so i don't see that ship headed the wrong way.

Can i just express my utter disappointment and frustration with Soo here though. She seems so resigned to her fate, so accepting of her suffering, putting her happiness away. How does this make her different from a regular ancient girl? Whats the actionable/emotional value added by her being a modern character? Nada. Fight for what you believe in girl! Fight for So and your freedom. Jeez. Such a waste.

Can't tell if I'm telling something people already know (sorry if it is) but laundry girl is the most blandest position and is one of the more labor intensive than a regular servant. It washes/tires people out because the garbs back then were just so darn heavy.
Hence my prediction is that Hae Su was just so tired out from doing laundry and so I think she clings onto to the thoughts of Wook and everyone else since her surroundings are somber. And in that way, the rain scene was probably something engraved in her mind (even if they don't show it). The more emotional memories are ones that a person definitely remembers vividly and so with all the events that have been happening to Su, I can't fault her for not wanting to wait for Wang So. What if something dire was to happen to him? She already lost Lady Oh. Su knows that So will eventually becomes king, but if she were take the initiative with him she might cause him to lost his position or so she thinks. The king was telling her that she shouldn't alter history (go sit back and observe) and in that way it suggests her position is that of a bystander, diminishing her self-worth/effort to do something.
Also I think her having suicidal thoughts or appearing to desire a suicide in the beginning of the show suggests that she's relapsing into negative thoughts of herself and the situation she is put in. Doesn't help that Wook is like that one time you were given a hamburger with no meat, soggy buns and thin lettuces.

The person who I hate the most in this episode is Su. First of all, when she was in 21st century, her BF betrayed her with her friend. Once she timetravelled into this century, she fell in love with Wook as if she forgot her past. I know that love is blind but hey, she should have been a bit skeptical about Wook's personality at that point.
Su was scared with her vision but how come she firmly believes that her vision is accurate. There are so many reasons that she should be skeptical of her vision. It just does not make sense.
She does not have a high IQ nor EQ!!! How frustrating!! Her stupidity can tire out even So who is willing to do anything for her.

Based on their demeanour alone, I can totally get why a 21st century girl would initially go for Wook over So. Not to say it's a great decision, but the gentlemanly, charming responsible one vs obsessive wounded bad boy with poor social skills and real trouble telling friendship from love (when a girl is involved)? No contest.

It is beautiful how the writer compare and contrast Wook and So, as now they are at the same life intersection. Weighing side by side between love and family and disability to betray blood. One, raised as a cast out now ready to claim what suppose to be his too, another raised as a privileged, even in the short time he had been a cast out, someone always there to swoop him back to where he belong, now cautious for every steps he take even to the point of sacrificing his own sister as a safety net.

How far them two had become.

It is sad that they have to do this is such a short series of episode. So much characters but only one that pretty much the main attraction, LJG. Thus the dizzying time warp of one year.

I think the assassination plot serve only as a device to skip the history. In reality, Mu suppose to hold the throne for 3 years if I'm not wrong, he's sick and passed away. Then Yo suppose to be the replacement but didn't have the support from military. Then Wook's son was suppose to be the one that So executed not Wook himself. So I believe the assassination is a reason for So and Mu to take out Yo and Wook in a couple episodes.

I think Su's diminishing proactivity resulted from losing two of her closest kin (Lady Hae and Lady Oh. Can you imagine losing your mother twice?), losing her anchor Wook, and feeling helpless as she watch the history just unfold regardless of what she did. I even think that she was afraid to even think anymore, thus her lack of inner voice.

She was ready to give up, as she was ready for So to swept her off the palace. Anything but to be in a place that reminded of everything she lost. But once again, when that gate cracked open, another voice crying for her help. This time, the king himself. She was tired of being the sacrificial lamb for everyone, yet knowing how she is, she cannot just walk away and live with that guilt hanging over her head.

And this episode showed how exhausted she is to the point of questioning Wook audibly and taking his bait, or more likely clinging on his bait. It hurts, but it's still something. Unfortunately she didn't see how jaded Wook had already become.

I think the king also taking a safe gamble by testing So. Now either Mu or So, if one of them is on the throne and the other on its side he wouldn't have to be worry that the kingdom he sacrificed so much for will be in ruin. He was holding on to Mu because Mu was the only one he trusted (although barely, but barely was better than none), now that candidate B had stepped up, he finally put every chess piece on its designated spot. He was full of vengeance after all. He wouldn't let Evil Queen's extension to ruin what is his, not after forcing him to let Lady Oh go.

Yeon-hwa is so darn clever and fearless that her own half brother finds her fascinating.

When Wang-yo told her that he will divorce his wife for her once he becomes king, she calls him out on it. She knows that there is no way he is going to do it because she is the left prime minister's daughter. He is his strongest ally who is going to help him sit on the throne.

Based on what is known, she DID marry her half brother. Or more correctly, Wang So married his half sister. We are modern time people so we base our views on our modern day values and principles. We keep forgetting that this story is set a good few centuries ago, when to marry your sibling was the means to an end - to keep their legacy in the family. Well, they didn't know much genetics back then. Oh, and I am sure they would be appalled by our morals, values and principles too.

I was completely OK with her wanting to marry So, in terms of the half-sibling thing, considering the fact that they haven't really spent alot of time together compared with the other princes. What I cannot accept is that she is actively persuing someone she wants because she is "still a woman", after ruining her brother's chances with the woman he loves. um hello gurl but if you haven't noticed your brother is "still a man" too other than being a prince. I can't help feeling that she's being super hypocritical and that she completely deserves So's rejection.

Su seems that she has fully acknowledged the fact that she's living in that era and has forgotten that you know, she is a "modern" girl. I kind of wanted her to remember who she really is and where she's from and realize that these all shall pass. She can't change the future of Korea, can she? Because technically, everything has happened already. That's why everyone's telling her that she should do nothing (to change the future). Though from all that she has experienced here, she will be able to change her would be future, if she ever comes back again to her present life.

I am entertaining that thought, but to be a replacement for Soo I would only do it in certain condition :

1. If Wang So have in par quality of Joon Gi oppa in charisma, intellect, physical prowess, and puppy dog eye.
2. If I can tell Wang Wook to suck his own d* -- oops, sorry got carried away for a sec -- stop being a pus** and get on with it already. (personally I don't blame his decision on the sticking with his family, I applaud him for that. I blame him for still dangling carrot in front of doe-i Soo and telling Lady Hae that he will treat Soo better, not like how he treat her, seriously? That in itself is an insult).
3. And last but not least, can I be BFF with two sword wielding gals Soon Duk and Woo Hee? We'll be Wang's angels instead of Charlie's angels and kicked those spoiled princes' ass

The contrast between So and Wook really struck me as well. Wook walked away when Su was bullied only to sneak back and see her under the cover of the night. So announces that he misses Su unprompted and offers to help her escape immediately after seeing her condition while Wook states that the current political climate prevents him from even asking the King to let her go. So tries and comforts Su by lightheartedly contending that she's better at physical labour anyway and lets her know she's beautiful when he sees her hands are worse for wear. Wook lets Su know that her poor health just makes him feel sorrier toward himself.

There was some serious projection when Wook argued that So was offering an empty marriage proposal and that Su's current situation was because she had been caught up in his axis. Umm I'm pretty sure from memory Wook, that it was your sister who setup Su in an attempt to eliminate her and get you to pursue the Crown that resulted in Su's current state. The one you're unable to forgive is yourself, so stop projecting your messed up guilt unto So.

Finally, I think it's interesting how amidst Wook's quiet pursuit of the Crown, So's actively being recognised as King material by both Su and his father and is having to vocally denounce his interest as every turn.

Totally agree with your assessment of Su having difficulty working through the heartache of losing her main supporters. It's obvious she's done and is asking for someone to stick a fork in her. It was great to see some of her old self with the glaring and letting Prince So know what's up.

I enjoyed the dark side of 8th Prince Wook in this episode. Looking forward to seeing how the writers carry on with this character.

Princess Yeonhwa is feeling the pressure of Wooks anger and now knows just what he expects of her...what happened to that confident smug face she pulled in the last episode (I really wanted to slap her face!) now she's running scared to Prince So who she knows can stand up to the evil queen AND her brother if need be. Her marriage proposal may seem sudden, but the writers firmly established her jealousy towards Su and the great relationships she formed with the Princes. I've sensed from the beginning that Princess Yeonhwa sees the Princes as chess pieces, being the only "girl" maybe she's felt like she's being replaced in their hearts by Su. The marriage between her Highness and Su is an obvious fact, can't wait to see how she manipulates people to make it happen.

I'm sure I wasn't alone screaming at the screen "take that you coward!" when Prince Su put Wook in his place after he tried to place the blame of So's situation on Su...Wook was reminded of Court Lady Oh's admonishment..."you can't save anyone"

Favorite line this episode: "Your uselessness makes me shake in anger" BOOM! Wook is in for an @$$ whoppin in the near future.

As ever, I'm still upset that important scenes are missing in the international version...looking for a good site to see the original with eng subs.

My favorite line is after Wook asked Su if her leg bothers her. "Only when I'm near water."

I laughed. What a perfect passive-aggressive reply! "Your dad gave me a job IN A STREAM! Of course my legs bug me all the dang time, you noob!"

Yes, this was awesome! Do you think she meant it as a dig? Can everything she said to Wook in that meeting be interpreted that way--as a reproach?

0

Exactly, my first thought was 'isn't she a WATER maid?' Like damn that basically means her leg aches 24/7!

I really like your view on the king's reasoning. When he suddenly became happy that So grew some ”I defy you” balls, I realised that he had been testing probably his son for a long time and he sent him as an ambassador for some kind of training. But I like even more your reasoning - the king knew that mother and son had a dire relationship, so his son would never get into his mother's machinations - one safe bet to save the CP. The king also let the son stay in the palace, he didn't sent him back to the adoptive family, so he must have had some plans for him, I think. Probably Wang So needed some ”royal education” first.
I think he sent Su out of the palace just to keep her safe, despite the hard labour. The king knew for sure who was behind the poisoning and he saw that Su was the initial scapegoat. As Lady Oh cherished her so much, he sent her away from the palace's threats. Also, there wasn't So, the only one to protect her. (Of course the king must have known that So was the only one to stay next to Su when she pleaded for Lady Oh's life).
I may read too much and I may put too much faith into the King, but he was the father of a new country. His hands were tied by his political alliances with the important clans, but he should have been capable of at least this much scheming.

@Adam I love your take on the kings involvement. It’s making me wonder if the king deliberately sent So away because he didn’t want So being raised by the Evil Queen. He probably knew that the Evil Queens family was politically strong and So as a part of that clan could gain their support for the throne and not bring his mother’s evil like Yo would.

Exactly, as a father of new nation he had a loooot to think about. To be able to reign for that long with no civil war was a feat, especially with too much drama around himself.

I think whatever he is doing is all deliberate, and Ji Mong was there to help every step of the way. I have a feeling as to what he got in store of Soo, he might want to install Soo in So's side just like he had Ji Mong oracle ability.

The fact that Ji Mong was already there ever since they all were small might have a connection with him sending So away and having Soo present on every major implication.

Why can't Su realize that she's slowly falling in love with So? All those voice over of "Why is it that I can't let you go and ignore you?, "Please don't abandon yourself for me" and her words of concern whenever she's having conversation with Su--- Argh! she's the one who cannot differentiate friendship and love! She's so slow and I'm starting to get frustrated by Su.

Oh man, initial thoughts. I thought this was such a good GREAT episodes, with important character growth and plot movement forward. I understand many shippers are upset (man that Soompi thread was hysterical this morning), but honestly I feel like Hae Su and Wang So’s relationship is so deeply romantic that while the pacing is agonizing, I’m totally balls deep, emotionally that is.

Point 1 - So JiMong tells our girl that she’s not suppose to say goodbye to any of the princes and what does she do? FINDS Wang So tell him that she’s leaving. Aiiiish, both of them are so bad at obeying palace orders. Even in this talk with Wang So, she’s careful with her words, but she’s clearly been shaken by his actions: the poison, the bold sword fighting at her hanging, the rain shield. I mean, homeboy STEPPED UP. I don’t think it was as simple as gratitude. Why didn’t she tried to find Wook to have a sweet good bye? Wook was ostensibly a safer goodbye since he made no overtures for her safety and thus not under palace scrutiny. Instead our girl was like, um, I wanna see the dude that I got kicked out of the palace. I think she also knew deep down that even as Wang So got exiled because of her, he still wouldn’t be mad at her. Since this is before the year-long exile for Wang So, homegirl had no clue that he would be gone for so long.

Point 1.5 - That Wook “I missed you” scene was so TRIFLING. He said that he missed her everyday, but you don’t nearly seen the loss on Hae Su’s face. She just smiles, and it was mad bitter because the follow up to “I missed you everyday” is “why the hell didn’t you come see me?” Wook then walks away being like “oh you made me feel bad.” PFFTTTT EFF OFF DOOD.

Point 1.75 - When Hae Su gets pulled by the other water maids, drinking haterade, it’s the writer drawing a parallel between Hae Su and Wang So. Now they both have the reputation of being bad luck and brining ill fortune onto people. When we, dear audience, know that truly, they’re on more of a legendary trajectory than a humble one.

Point 2 - Waiiiiiii never has hanging laundry been more tragi-romantic. Hae Su is straight up about to cry when she realizes that Wang So was real and not a figment of her imagination. This kind of leads me to believe that Hae Su has probably been fantasizing about our dark prince since he’s been gone and that’s why she was on the verge of tears. It almost like a moment (if the relationship were further along), she would have been teuchin’ his face ands stuff. I mean, you see how she truly feels about his mental state, she’s worried that he’s reverting back to the angry mensch before she turned him on to BB cream. But he says, no, it was just a way to remember her. Even when she’s yelling at him, it’s not bitterness or anger, she’s truly frightened. She’s seen FIRST HAND how it went down for Lady Oh when she tried to protect Hae Su from the palace. And now her best friend/(secretly lover prince) is offering the EXACT same thing,...

TLDR ahah

the same kind protection that gets you killed in the palace? Oh Hae No, (hah, I made a pun), she spurned him with some b.s. reasons but we all know where her heart really is.

Point 3 - Hae Su entertained the proposal. Fully. I know she did because IU did her super huge doe-eye blink. And if it was not for the king telling her that she has to be around to observe and not interfere with the fate of Wang So. She entertained it because Wang So offered her freedom, all that she has wanted when they first met, and her modern sensibilities of being an independent person not under the subjugation of any royal decree. Wang So understands that about her. She almost said yes, because it would solve all of her currently problems. But because of the King’s conversation, she says no, she must stay in the palace, which is verbatim, what the King told her to do. Yeah, it sucks, but I think there are many things at play with

Soompi is the hive for dead-serious idol fans. It's hard to mess with those fans, they'll go through hell and high water for their idols. Pretty scary threats happen in Soompi at times. But its a knack to read their comments!

Really? I have been meaning to make an account there but i keep thinking that i shouldn't enable my kdrama obsession any more. But if its all idol fangirls then there is no way i'm logging in.

0

Soompi can be fun too! Soompiers manage to get juicy stuff, pics, clips or anything related to a drama. I actually enjoy lurking around on their Kdrama thread.

0

I'm sorry but this is the most false statement ever! The Soompi drama forums is home to intelligent and thoughtful drama discussion. It's well moderated and generally troll-free. There are forums for the hardcore idol fans, but that's the thing, they only stay in their forums and it doesn't spill over to the general forum community.

The Moon Lover forums in Soompi has dedicated live recappers, and some interesting contributions from the forumites, such as comparisons to the Chinese version, and the actual historical background (spoiler: Baek-ah's bloodline, not So's reigns until the end of Goryeo). I'm now looking for the original Chinese series, just to see if it really is so much better.

bips99 I encourage you to make an account there and join the fun! Or just lurk and crawl through the content. It's pretty much kdrama crack though ;-)

0

Soompi's great, and the people there are so amazingly hardworking with the contributions of videos, gifs, pictures etc. A lot of the comments are remarkably insightful. And the moderators are really good, so no bashing etc.

For the drama threads, the fans are mainly drama fans because you can see them comment on many dramas.

0

Soompi forums can be fun because you get a lot of updates, more than you'd get or expect from sites like allkpop, etc. You can also expect some good discussions and live recaps if the drama you're following over there is popular enough. You'll be safe from trolls too.

As for the cons of the forums, I'd say that some people over there taking shipping WAY too seriously, and it can get quite troublesome. Sometimes it leads to behavior that I'm not a fan of and don't agree with at all. Also, the way some people exploded over this episode wasn't pretty to say the least, lol.

But overall, I'd say the pros outweigh the cons, especially if you're looking for more drama discussion + news.

0

Haha you're right on that one LP! After "Do not quote images" the most frequent mod message I see in Soompi is "Do not let shipping derail the thread/Keep all shipping to the dedicated forums."

0

I have to agree with the statement about soompi being for idol fans (lord help you if you criticise their acting on there)..... and also it's worth adding that if you have anything at all critical to say about an actor or a drama, it's an opinion that is distinctly NOT WELCOME.

It's very much a cheerleaders-only kind of forum, but that can be great when the show is a good one. (I always thought one measure of how badly Cheese in the Trap effed up lay in the fact that even the soompi thread on the drama was full of 'wtf is this @#%*!' comments - something that never happens, ever)

0

At last, someone who truly understands HS state of mind!!!! I got exhausted just WATCHING the events around HS, can you imagine her trauma?? She put all heart in everything she did, she has nothing left. The time jump was necessary because all she probably did was be bullied in a zombie-like manner. HS, I feel like crying just thinking about her plight.

Nah, I think Su confide more comfortably with So because he's been there done that. Wook, well, he never got exiled by himself, he had the comfort of his family, especially his mother. Sooo, what can he offer?

In a year, Jesus really a year without any visit and she still hanging on to Wook? She's so using Wook as a shield from falling right into So's hand.

So is the definition of bad boy Goryeo style, finely aged with smooth finishing. Wook, is a coke, maybe even flat coke, no more fizzy and all sugar dump. It's time to be a grown lady, Su, take a sip of that high quality wine and leave the soda to kids.

In a year, Jesus really a year without any visit and she still hanging on to Wook?

That was in Goryeo, about 1000 years ago. Everything happened at snail and tortoise pace, there were no cars, no trains, no planes, no TV, no mobile phones, no internet, and not much entertainment. It was very unlike our modern age of instant gratification and speedy romance.
They wrote poems to express love in a roundabout manner, then patiently waited for the response to
come back after days, weeks, months or even years. People were less fickle minded, they could be so obsessed about love that people did die of lovesickness. Therefore, it is not surprising that after one year of no visit, no contact and no progress, our So and Wook were back to square one, and fighting over Su all over again.

Even if the time lapse had enabled our cool baddie Goryeo boy So to mature into that flavorsome and aromatic aged wine, and that spineless Wook to fizzle out like a flat coke, our stubborn lady still preferred to drink tea, sigh.

apparently, they met 1 year ago, when haesoo just got to gyobang? and somehow they share common feelings and become bff
why? because the plot said so --' everything happened offscreen and here we have a formed relationship
if they so dire to have that friendship, then put in a flashback, or some scene to form the friendship, instead we have scene of 10th prince (that is like a total different drama to everyone else)

I was wondering if I had missed the scene where HaeSoo and WooHee met. Your comment hints that all the viewers missed that scene. It is probably lying on the cutting room floor.

0

Hey don't forget that Su and Baek-ha also became BFFs offscreen so it's just fair that the same happens with Woo-hee. Su's a shy girl y'know, they wanted to give the poor girl some privacy and have her make friends when nobody's watching. ?

Required fields are marked *

At least there's 1 flashback for baekah and su development, we got none for woohee, I guess woohee is less of an important character in comparison to baekah huh?

0

i know there's a kiss scene in the next ep between baek ah and woo hee.. (from the damn spoiler on the web)

before even watching this ep.. i was wondering how fast could their development be that meeting 3 time and kissing in 2 ep later.?

but the 1 year skip seems to make sense.. i guess baek ah had been coming to teach and getting close to woo hee while all in her mind was preparing her assassination .. (though they never show any flashback.. but baek ah did know she was a dancer there on ep10 during their 3rd encounter.. during the skip, most likely they got closer too)

actually im more interested in knowing the prince development with Su

but seems like crown prince, 3rd and 9th and 10th definitely didnt contact her

as for 4th, he was send away so cant be helped..

8th was only there after a year?!

14th had been there, sending medicine somemore (so sweet)

13th idk, but i think since he's at there with woo hee.. he definitely had met with Su..

0

Maybe i'm one of the minority here. But i think how Su and WooHee met is somehow irrelevant for me. I don't even think that they're BFFs. They're just an acquaintance who happen to have a common person who happen to be very close to both of them.

I completely agree. It would only make sense that they somehow meet. Soo is a laundry maid in the gibang that Wohee works and lives in. That was one connection they didn't need a whole lot of elaboration on.

So the thing is, placement of 10th prince scene is different in itnernational and raw version.

In one version, it happens earlier when they are showing progress after 1 year - sort of showing snippets of everyone's life and where they have moved to in this 1 year.

But in another version, it comes straight up after some serious conversation and breaks the flow..

Not saying, there is a very smooth flow to this episode to begin with..but ya whatever..

My two realizations:
1. Watch scenes with LJK, rewatch scenes with LJK, keep watching scenes with LJK - Rest of the actors - My humble dedication - I tried so hard by linking park.. that it doesn't even matter

2. IU has such b'ful eyes (not sure why it took me 12 hours to realize it.. but whatever) .. anime eyes.. doll eyes.. actually she is very doll like..

Required fields are marked *

I'm giggling @points 1 and 2.

IU really does look very doll-like, doesn't she? It's something about the huge eyes and the small features/face, but she legit looks like a manhwa character. And so does Lee Jun-ki (not surprising, since his younger self was the original flower boy/irl shoujo manga hero, but I love his older+hotter version)

Wang So, you do things without waiting and thinking. And I love the way you do it. You protect the things which you want with actions and not with words or waiting specially without loosing it. Always straight to the matter!..... Had been refreshing the dramabeans for the recap after watching the raw episode Heads your recaps are the fastest and thank you for that. As for LJK you are the best actor..... The emotions and the delivering of the dialogues are the best.... And no one can NAil down the Wang So's character except you. After watching the drama.... No disappointment there it's like for each drama's character he lives that character until the very end..... LJK is my main reason to stay watching since I have been so devastated over the sinking of Su-So ship. I am all geared about wanting him to sit on that throne and doing some major heartbreaking towards Haesoo. Hey, karma is a bitch and she needs to have a taste of it after all that she has done to my Wang So. But seriously, having Wang So doing the chasing and facing rejection after rejection really kinda irked me. They totally devalues him. And that is why I am saying I miss the masked-man, the cool swaggering hero that should be the one chased after by the girl while he is busy chasing after wolves.

I miss that WS too .... but on thinking i realise that this is so consistent with his character. He is just so starved for affection that whenever he gets a scrap of it, he hangs on to it with all his power.

despite being rejected by Queen Motheroftheyear repeatedly, he still slayed an entire group of assassins for her.

So he hangs on to HS for what she once did for him.

He is such a lonely wounded puppy that i want to hug him everytime someone disappoints him. Which happens every, freaking. episode.

Required fields are marked *

You are definitely spot on with this one.

The intensity of his feeling towards Haesoo is so deep which left me wondering, what would eventually cause him to turn his back on her? He knows that she is in love with someone else yet he is still persuasive. He knows that she feels that he will ruin everything in the end but he chose to brush that away. So, what actually hurt him so much and trigger him to sort of abandoning her in the end?

But man, I cringed over the intensity of Haesoo's love towards Wook. If this drama is to follow the original C-novel where her love for 4th is the most intense, I wonder how wiped out our heroine could be since Haesoo obviously looked so beaten in this episode (partly due to Lady Oh, and partially for being dumped by Wook).

0

@del

I'm not sure if they have the time to craft a proper abandonment of her by WS. 8 episodes left, there is no love, no "epic" romance in sight... when will we get to this heartbreak even?

but yes, what would cause the rift? Because she has thrown everything at him by now. She told him that she loved someone else, she told him that he was bad luck and should go away, she keeps rejecting him point blank.

So i cannot think of anything that would hurt him more than all of this

0

Btw, is no one going to talk about the Stolen kiss scene?

0

lol .. ljk is more likely to pull her hair than give her a peck .. he is such a clown on set.

but a fully smiling WS is such a special treat.

0

Thanks for the speedy recap as always Headsno2!

I legit skipped the 10th prince scene like I have been doing all this time lool. I know that he's a part of the narrative, but his story feels jarring to me because it doesn't feel like he has any connections with whatever is happening in the story. I don't know, he's the only part of the show I don't enjoy.

And just because I said I was going to post it:

I actually have a theory that the real Hae Su committed suicide because of her feelings for Wook. She knew how wrong it was to love him. I based this on Ha Jin in Hae Su’s body interactions with Wook. He seemed to already have feelings for Hae Su, and the way he noted how different she was… it was as if they already had secret encounters before and Hae Su was just so different and maybe even tried to avoid him before she killed herself.

I don't think this will ever be confirmed, and it's neither here or there anyway, since Wook ship has sunk. Now I'm just watching this show and enjoying it immensely each time.

I LAUGHED OUT LOUD when Wang So said "Your uselessness makes me tremble with anger." to Wook. Feel you BIG TIME there fam.

Man, Hae Su looks so worn out and sad though. I feel for her. When we have her close ups her skin doesn't look as flawless. :') Poor baby Su.

In ep 1, the way their library scene is shot..apparent first meeting of IU wiith Wook..
and add to that the information that HS used to go into that cave to meet some man :P

Wook comes across lusty paedophile.. :) .. don't ask why..

Just never really warmed up to that relationship.

Also, I think i am the only one who is not finding Kang Ha neul attractive in Wook's garb (acting is nice.. and i actually love him.. or have before this role)... but he just looks so old like a 40 yr old in this character

That's the point tho, they're trying hard to make Wook much older than he is. Because Haneul and Jong Hyun (Yo) is only 3 years older than IU, Joon Gi is 11 years older than IU. Since Wook and So suppose to be around the same age, they have to work on Wook, although not so much since JG oppa never aged :P (he does looked more mature because of the weight loss.)

I also had the feeling that there might have been something--at least on Wook's part--going on before Hajin "became" Haesoo. I am glad that you brought this up because I was also thinking about it. I just don't know if any of that possible history between Wook and the original Haesoo will ever be discussed.

Could it be that the original Haesoo is now in modern-day Korea? If you recall, the disheveled and dirty man who spoke cryptically to Hajin in episode one looked exactly like the our astronomer, Jimong. If the astronomer was originally from present-day Korea, could the other man have originally come from Goryeo?

That's what I thought several episodes back. Modern child Jimong got sent back in time, and the original Goryeo child got sent to the future and grew up to become that homeless man.

I had the same thought. That theory made sense especially when Wook was privately telling Hae Soo she was different while publicly telling every single person they weren't even close. I mean, that's inconsistency unless there's a subtle hint about old Hae Soo and Wook's real relationship.

Ugh. Please don't make me hate Wook more...:-(

Byun Baek-hyun as 10th Prince Wang Eun is there because of the EXO fandom. Because there are many princes on the payroll, the writer has allocated scenes and dialog among the minor princes (So and Wook are exempt). In the beginning Yo appeared to be the chief antagonist, but this drama is about the Soo-So-Wook triangle. The other princes are handsome filler.

Everyone is pitiful right about now:

Soo is pitiful
So is pitiful
Wook is pitiful
Yeonhwa is pitiful
The king is pitiful
BaekAh is pitiful
Woohee is pitiful

The only ones not currently pitiful are WangEun and SoonDeuk...and we all know how that ends according to Soo's premonition...so who's going to be happy in this drama, I ask?

Yeon Hwa? Pitiful? Eonje?

When she met with Queen Sin she was fierce! As much as I dislike the character I had to applaud her brash oneupmanship.

When Yo proposed I got the sense that she was very much in control of the situation.

When Wook warned/reminded her that she should be able to sacrifice herself to Yo for power, nope, still felt no pity since it was what she deserved.

When she proposed to So, despite her 'care' for him she just seemed calculating.

So, nope, pity isn't among the emotions Yeon Hwa evoked in me this episode. Maybe I missed something?

Required fields are marked *

She's pitiful in the sense that her gender and position in Goryeo society has made her the person she is.

Looking at her thinking hard after Yo's proposal and Wook's insinuation of sending her to Yo to be a hostage, I was struck by pity. She's evil, yes, but a place that requires you to be that evil just to survive is not quite a place to go on vacation, you know?

I don't necessarily feel sorry for her because I do agree that she deserves some karma for her evil deeds. I just feel pity about why she's had to become that way.

OMG, Heads, I was wondering what you were going to make of this episode. Thanks for your always patient take of this list of scenes pretending to be an episode. Amen to "So c’mon, Su. You’re from the future. Act like it."

How would I describe this week’s episode?

Pretend that last week’s episode was a culmination of a hard fought victory in an uphill battle against bad OST, directing, editing. It ended with a big HUGE win emotionally. Our hearts and souls rededicated to our difficult relationship with a less than perfect drama.
Tonight we enter the stadium, ready to carry our heroes around on our shoulders, and drink wine, and cry together.
Then, WHOOSH!
That euphoric rug we all stood and sobbed on?
It’s pulled out from underneath us and
SLAM!
We all fall down - arse over teakettle - in a jumble on the ground. Not knowing which way is up. AGAIN.
The team we love scattered hither and thither, replaced by the zombie story telling we thought we had left behind.
I just want to cry.
Only the absolute gorgeousness of LJG in orange to soothe me as I grieve the loss of Woo Hee Jin’s and Park Shi Eun’s wasted talents.
Also, not enough Queen Shinmyung Soonsung,
And I swear to the rain-giving-god, if Pretty Baek-ah is dead, I will not forgive you, Show.

And I totally agree with you about everything it feels like the step forward we had in the last episode was a figment of my own imagination everything has took a step back now in this episode ? Also the way scenes were edited together didn't make sense at all! And agree with everyone saying there should have been a some sort of flashback so us viewers can understand the situation and not just accept it foe what it is just cus the show said so...

I liked the orange because for one moment on screen, he wasn't all doom and gloom and goth. It was very different.
I googled the meanings of colors in Asia, this was China specifically:
ORANGE - indicating change, adaptability, spontaneity, strengthens concentration

PS, when Eye-Yo came back from whereever he went, he also was wearing orange.

PS:
BLACK - color for young boys (who will continue the family/ancestor lineages),
delving into the depth of something, flowing, dormant, conserving, immortality, stability, knowledge, trust, adaptability, spontaneity, power, career, will, emotional protection, calmness vs. lack of will

The show being (very) poorly written is not going to change, because the writer didn't haha I was also hoping for some improvement after the surprise that was ep 11, but I'm not too surprised we saw inconsistencies again this episode.

Regardless of those flaws, I find there's definitely something that pulls you about the show. I'm very picky in general, but I'm coming back week after week to watch this, and I can't give all the credits to LJG. I think it still makes you invested enough in the main characters (HS, YH, WS and WW) that you want to make sense out of what you see. For that reason alone, I guess I won't say it's a complete fail.

Thanks HeadsNo2!! Episode 11!! Loved it.

1. The King had some interesting moments. Throwing both Su and So out. Then when So comes back and openly criticizes and goes against the King. It was awesome to see the 4th Prince be real with the King. Showing his displeasure, when the king rarely sees that from his sons. The king actually appreciating So's reaction and his revealing that he knows So will also be King one day. He's been testing So this entire time not only for loyalty but leadership. Does he love So? Perhaps not, but he does respect him.

2. Also really interesting is the dynamics between the King and Su. He's weary of what she's capable of due to her knowledge. Is he sincere when he declares Su like a daughter because Court Lady Oh felt this way? I think it was slightly sincere, but more so of a way to convince Su not to interfere. Let the present play out even if she knows the outcome. Smart King. Ruthless, but smart. Funnily, the King always tries to send those he "likes", far away. Su, So, and even trying to marry Yeon Hwa far off.

3. Wang So getting rejected by Su before he leaves was a little sad, but she is still sorting through her feelings. I liked the peck. It was genuine affection from So. Su was suffering the loss of the people she had grown fond of or loved. She took it as her punishment for Court Lady Oh's death. So was still loyal to Su and he needed to show her their friendship was not going away.

4. Wang Wook.. Wookie my dear.. .. letting go of the present in hopes of a future with power.. Methinks it will be too late. Did I cry when he sobbed after Su leaves? Yes, because they did and do love each other. Wookie is just not brave enough to let it be.

5. I love Baek Ah, but the scenes with the Woo Hee are cringe worthy. Like with Baek Hyun, Woo hee's acting just isn't there yet for emotional, conflicting moments. Suspension of disbelief.. plummeted. Is it entirely her fault.. maybe not. Depends on if important scenes were left on the cutting room floor as have been done in the past with Baek Ah's storylines. I just don't want Baek Ah to die.

6. So telling Su he missed her, seeing her worsened condition and later asking her to marry him. Not just for his sake, but for hers. He only wants what is best for her. To feel freedom. He is willing to sacrifice family, the one thing he wanted this entire time, for Su to be happy. Flutters in my stomach when he tells Su she can divorce him after they leave.

7. Love hate relationship with close ups continues.. They are made for actors like Kang Haneul and Lee Joon Gi. Unnecessary at other times.

Can't wait for tomorrow!!!!

Choi Ji-mong actually existed in history. He was a scribe and astrologer before Taejo became king.
When Wang Geon (Taejo) was 30yrs old he had a dream of being on top of a nine story gold tower. Ji-mong interpret his dream as a sign that Wang Geon would unify the 3 kingdoms and became the emperor, which eventually came true 11yrs later.
(Ji-mong is currently his most trusted advisor as we see here).

I think that he traveled to the future as an adult. Hae-soo didn't change at all when she appeared in Goryeo.
I wonder if this was not his first time traveling to the future. Maybe he did when he was a kid too.

Hmm, I'm not so sure about that comment. Many years ago, I married a persistent and possessive guy who said exactly the same thing to me (that we could just get divorced if it didn't work out and I didn't want to stay married). However, when I wanted a divorce, he went full-blown stalker-y, along the lines of what Wang So has already said: "Just you try to run away from me and see what happens."

It was very, very frightening. Not romantic. :(

Omo~ that sounds horrible. I hope you're okay now.

Listening that "possessive" from Wang So from an era that is patriarchial is something I can understand.. (That's how the teacing for boys were, before civilization). I mean, they want it, they take it (women, throne, power, money).

But I guess possessiveness never dies, like that pick up line "you're the first to have ever treated me this way" (10th)

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm fine now, thank you! It was a very long time ago, but for years I was looking over my shoulder and having nightmares.

One thing I learned from it is that we (girls and women) often romanticize possessiveness from men, because it makes us feel special--that we are meant to be as a couple, that this is a love story for the ages, that the guy is so laser-beam focused on us because we are unique to him,--when really, it is a character trait of his (obsessiveness, possessiveness) that has nothing to do with us. If it wasn't us, it would be someone else he is fixated on.

I love Wang So as a fictional character because I believe he is good. I don't think he'd ever really hurt Hae Soo for trying to leave him.

But in real life? No. It happens too often.

Lord I'm actually in agreement with Yeonhwa over something. Make my mother grovel like that and I'd burn the whole place to the ground. Good that they added that motivation for her, so she's not just an ambitious two dimensional power hungry bitch. I think through time and cultures, not wanting to see your mother beggared is something we can all empathize with. I also understand why she went to So: the brother she thought would always protect her is now considering using her as a pawn and a spy against Yo. She was afraid their father was going to do that to her, but for Wook to possibly do it too? It's go time, a girl's gotta get her moves in before she gets checkmated.

I really think Hae Soo is never truly going to snap out of it, and the contrast between her and YH is intended.

Hae Soo is from the future. She grew up in a world of (relative) gender equality and freedom, and knows very well how history will turn out. Naturally, she can only grow more and more discouraged by the rules and restrictions of the past, because from her perspective she went from 100 to 0, she now lives where she has no power. Also, she can only be more and more passive, because it's hard to decide to go for something (or someone, say So) if you know already that it's going to be useless.

But YH was born in the past, so she can more easily navigate it. She knows that it's not just black and white and there's some (although tiny) grey areas in which she can get some control over her life and situation. Also, she knows nothing of the future, so she can go for the stars, because she doesn't know if they're really out of reach or not.

I wouldn't expect HS to be full of spunk and become a Joan of Arc or some superhero. But living an aimless life is worse than death (and boring as hell to watch haha), so what I'm hoping is that she finds herself a reason for living (*cough* So *cough*) and goes for it (even if it'll fail and she knows it'll fail).

YH is always going to be more of badass than HS. We just need to accept it haha

but now that she realised that she might be the one discarded by wook, she is like 'to hell with it' .... why shouldn't i be with the man i love?

And she is the one who has noticed WS's devotion to HS. Can't blame the girl for wanting it for herself.

At least WS once committed won't abandon her to the wolves or indulge in self pity and lay all the blame and responsibility on her . She would for the first time have someone else willing to shoulder all her problems

She's always been vocal about the fact that her mom is being ignored or treated like sh*t by Queen SMSS and that their whole family's banishment and subsequent suffering were all Queen SMSS's fault. But Yeon-hwa is smart and took her blaming a step further into "it's not Queen SMSS per se but our family's lack of power." That's why she's always been trying to scheme her family's way up. Can't blame her for that.

It's kinda funny how a lot of the female side characters have clearer motivations than our heroine itself. It's like the writer's brain short-circuited from trying to adapt Su with the novel and the C-version in mind that they just gave up and focused on the other ladies.

To me, their dynamics have always been interesting. I feel like they are almost two sides of the same coin. I mean, their devotion to people they love is very intense, yet their approach to protecting them is wildly different.

It doesn't help that in my honest (don't shoot me) opinion, Kang Hanna is slightly the better actress than IU. Or rather she has a better understanding of her character and was capable of showing layers to Yeon-hwa's character.

This show needs just a couple more episodes to flesh things out and a better writer (not that anything can be done about it now). Whole swatches of plot and character development are missing which is a pity. Viewers can't be expected to just take things for granted because they're told so - they need to see it come to life, we are watching a drama after all.

How did Woo Hee and Hae Soo meet and become friends? (We’re told but I would’ve liked to see it, just as I would’ve liked to see Baek Ah and Hae Soo’s friendship develop in the earlier episodes.) More importantly, how/why did Wook join forces with Yo? How did the 14th Prince become the ally of the 8th Prince? Why did the King issue an edict allowing a free-for-all fight for the throne amongst the princes? What happened to the Crown Prince? All important questions that are not answered in this episode.

10th: his own world - self explanatory where he is and why.. although I don't know why his right hand belongs to HS

13th: 4th saved 13th from verbal abuse of 3rd in one of the earlier episodes ( 5 or 6) and they became batman and robin

9th: was always with 3rd.. except for the times when 3rd would not be on screen.. then he would follow 8th..

8th: He wants revenge of WS.. hates him, his guts, and his jealous.. so went ahead to forge alliance with 3rd ( 10th ep i think) .. and then with every episode realized he wants throne and that he is genuinely more smart than others because he has the virtue of patience....

14th: 4th will not entertain him, 10th is married and busy in his room, 13th is with 4th, 3rd is on a diff tangent plus 14th doesnt like him anymore, 1st is crown prince so can't really play with him, 9th is kinda boring...
And hence only 8th left to align with :)

More than Wook, noticing WS's concern for HS is a more obvious thing to happen.. and add to that.. WS has the sass to do it and has been doing it in front of them..

So, if 14th really wants to save HS..he would be following WS..

But, its more than about HS... its about sharing ideologies and basically someone whose intellect you respect and believe him... and ofcourse, I don't think WS will be so comfortable with 14th.. or that 14th can muster courage to be with 4th ..

"When 3rd dies, will Queen SMS loose her mind?"

That's a perfect reason for 4 and 14 to eventually be pitted against each other! Queen SMS would surely try to use 14 as her backup would-be king. You know what they say royal children: "An heir and a spare." If/when 3 dies, if 14 is still alive, he would be that spare.

If 14 eventually develops romantic feelings for Hae Soo, that's another reason for 4 and 14 to go war with each other.

Plus, as Chocopie says, 14 has a wary feeling about 4, from all those years of 14 being shunned and from resenting having to see the poison that is palace politics in his mother and brother-prince 3.

This is totally unrelated to anything relevant, but I thought IU was really pretty in this episode even though she was in the plainest clothes, makeup, and hair we've seen her in lol. It might have to do with the fact that I thought her acting was pretty on-point this episode.

And Hae Soo – did you spend a year pining for Mr Everyone-Is-To-Blame-But-Myself? The one who wishes that you’d take care of yourself so that HE won’t feel as bad as he already does? The one who’s willing to sell his sister for his ambition claiming it a debt to be paid? For him, you hurt my poor Wang So who is willing to give up all for you?

@bips99, I honestly think she was getting closure from his betrayal. When she said "I missed you, but I missed you", I saw that to mean "You failed me. If nothing else, you could have come before this to see me, but you didn't."

And when she said "did you miss me?" I felt she was just trying to get some reassurance that he did love her once, maybe fearful that it was all in her head.

She's not in love with him anymore, if anything she's just mourning the loss of their love as she gains closure to move forward. I found it a very bittersweet, but great scene.

And I don't think Soo spent the year pining for Soo, more like her love turned cold gradually. She was grieving for Lady Oh.

Required fields are marked *

That was a very sad scene. I cried. For the love they once shared, for the people that they were. One year on, and how different both of them are now: she utterly broken in body and spirit, he, forming a hard veneer around his heart to cope with the guilt and the pain of abandoning the girl he loves. I understand Wook, his family commitments, his helplessness, his frustrations, the resolve to seize the throne as the only way out to protect those he loves, including Hae Su.

I think she still loves him, and I think it's very real that she can't let go, one year on, it speaks of the complexities of the human heart and the human psyche...the mind says one thing but the heart says another. Because she loves him, she's ready to excuse him for his abandoning her. She tells herself, it's okay, as long as he really did love me, and he wasn't faking it, that's good enough for me. I was good enough to be loved once by a prince. She has sunk into such depths of despair she has convinced herself she's the lowliest of the low, and undeserving of any love from anyone, let alone a prince - she's been cursed for being a blight on people's luck, and it's been drummed into her so long she believes it. Her physical disability, her limp, as well as her servant's appearance, would be an immense blow to her self- respect and pride, she being a girl whose life and career revolved around beauty and makeup. She would have told herself, I'm maimed, I'm ugly now, I don't deserve to be loved by anyone. She is a broken being, neither alive nor dead.

So has to fix her back, piece by piece, her mind, if not her body. It would take a lot of patience and love, but he'll be able to do it, with the courage and strength that he possesses. Hot headed that he is, and flawed that he may be, he moves me and makes me cry for his unwavering, selfless love for Su. Never has a woman been so loved. When he said "You're beautiful as always", my heart broke, I just wept....so, so touching.

Oooh, good points, yy.
Especially about the limp. It would be quite lovely if So could be the one to do Goryeo PT with her to fix her limp, or at least make it less obvious
You have drawn such a good picture of her feelings and Wook's, better than I saw on screen. I will now have to re-watch.

0

Hi jomo!!! I think that limp, the way she drags herself, that awkward gait that she has now, to me, is a stark contrast to the fleet, quicksilver movements she used to display; she could never be forced to sit still, stand still, obey and conform....she would try her best, but her impatience would take over, and boredom would set in, so she would just give up, and dart off somewhere and get into mischief. But this new shuffling, clumsy, awkward gait she has now, it's painful to watch; she's slow, and she drags herself, and the heavy tread of her footsteps, as she painfully makes her way up the steps, placing one foot, step by step, inching her way up so laboriously....it was hard to watch. They broke her, and I don't know whether she'll ever heal again, and I just feel so sad looking at the her now. I think if they break her any further, she'll just die.

0

It has already been a year. Why is she chanting ‘i missed you’ ‘did you miss me’

I assumed she was making a nasty point - "Did you ever actually care about me?"

When he said "Sorry I couldn't keep my promises" I couldn't help but shout "Yeah we ALL know what your promises are worth!" at the screen.

What killed me in that conversation is how Wook once again made it all. about. HIM. "Don't make me feel bad" - are you kidding me? She's beating laundry with a stick all day long while still suffering the effects of torture he let her endure, and yet Wook just feels sorry for himself. GAH.

" So c’mon, Su. You’re from the future. Act like it."

In my opinion, what Hae Su's doing right now is just normal. I mean, you're a broken-hearted 21st century girl. While wallowing in self-pity by the lake. You were suddenly brought to Goryeo. Met a Prince who will also break your heart and your mother-figures died. Do we expect her to snap out of it and get involved in politics?

This is a good point. I mean, I'm also a 21st century girl, and I have been betrayed by someone I loved (involving Tinder! Don't we all love 21st century love problems?). I went through a bouts of depression from it and have only recovered thanks to all the love and support I have from family and friends. If I were thrown to Goeryo era right after I got betrayed, I wouldn't exactly be ready to get involved with politics either.

Coming from 21st century doesn't mean we're going to be strong I guess.

It makes total sense for her to be depressed, her beloved mentor/mother figure Lady Oh just died, her boyfriend Wook walks away from her and does not even visit her for a year, her best friend & confidante So gets shipped to the borders, her other besties the princes don't even talk to her anymore, She has lost all moral and emotional support, she has no family and friends, she's now a lowly servant/servant being bullied by other servants!

What's a girl gonna do? So what if she's from the future? For all we know a girl from the future who had to go through what Soo had to would probably be lying in the morgue right now, after slitting her wrist from depression or jumping from the tallest building!

Yeon Hwa has some guts standing up to Queen SMS. I like the fact that she's got spunk and enough ambition to really not give a f*ck about anyone in the palace that stands in her way. Though her decisions and principles are questionable, Yeon Hwa is a mighty fine daughter. It's just sad to see that even with her wit and plot(s) to achieve more power, she still is by the end of the day, chooses to be a girl wanting to follow her heart.
That's how she and Su differ. Yeon Hwa, because of her standing and royal ties, is bounded by so many restrictions, be it people, agendas or both. She really never gets to have what she desires and is often shoved or pushed to do what her family or the king wants. I'm glad she finally let loose and is starting to stand up for herself or for her family, morals aside of course. But, with all these in play, I have a feeling she drew the shortest straw and will only end up being a patsy to the grand scheme of things her brother and the third prince have in store.

I love YH.. but i honestly thought her proposal to WS was her desperate attempt to run away from Yo..

She hates the idea of marrying Yo so much that she is willing to give up her one and only dream of power.. ok not giving up but drawing out the challenges for a little longer..

Plus she is smart and shrewd enough to know that WS is actually the most powerful both in terms of intellect and warfare.. And she knows that she is good at formign alliances, and strategizing.

So, she can propel WS to stardom.. if she has his trust ... Quite like Queen SMS..

But no, she wasn't proposing to So solely because she wanted to run away from Yo.

Yes, she does have feeling for So, and definitely not towards Yo. But I think she must have known beforehand of the prophecy being told that So would actually become King.

So, by proposing marriage to So and should he accepted her - she is the clear winner. Marrying the man that she loves and she is no longer a princess but a Queen.

She is by far the most clever of all the siblings. I think she is even more clever to So.

So, i definitely agree that YH has always been romantically inclined towards WS.. Moreover, before HS came, YH has actually never looked down upon WS ( its just timing that WS didn't realize YH's interest in him over HS)

Anyways, so yes YH loves WS and has but being her pragmatic self she never pursued it.. hinted once in a while for WS to take action.. but would have never gone out of her way to give this relationship a chance..

What really propelled her to do it this time.. was not love (it was the added bonus.. ) .. but fear or repulsion of being with 3rd..

Yeon Hwa might have proposed to So because she wanted to follow her heart BUT...... What she doesn't know is that proposing to So might have been the smartest move IF only So agreed.. Cause if he did, we all know he well, technically ends up being king. She following her heart was also probably her own instincts telling her who among the princes will most likely get the throne. Again, she's a smart cunning lass but lacks the morals and principles to live a life with dignity.

I've always like Yeon Hwa's character (except the whole whipping part). Ever since episode 2, we've known she has a soft spot for Wang So.

I may be in the minority, but I don't think her proposal to Wang So was just an attempt to avoid Wang Yo. I think she was being gutsy enough to follow her heart.

This makes her a bit more tragic, and therefore lovable: even tough-minded, intelligent, strategizing, powerful women at the end of the day want to love and be loved by their spouse. And, she is right: they are destined to be together...not sure how that will work out, but we'll see!

I think its a bit of both. She does care about WS. And she hates Yo. Plus she is waking up to the realisation that wook actually would have no qualms about sacrificing her for the throne ... Who wouldn't love that kind of security after years of being pushed and pulled around

1) Him wondering how she happened to know so many princes.
2) Is out of character for a girl to dare to slash her wrist so that she won't get to marry a king that left him with a remark that "She is more brave than most men."
3) May be Lady Oh's words that Haesoo is their dead child triggered him to investigate on Haesoo even though he knows, that such is impossible.
4) Ji Mong doing his confiding with the King
5) Suspicion arouse on why Ji Mong wanted to keep her in the palace so very badly.
6) He must have wondered how So managed to cover his scar and must have learned of Haesoo's ability to come up with the BB cream.

it is clear that soo is falling in love with so. everything on this episode tells us about it. she is trying very hard to deny her own feelings. we can see the difference on her face when she met wook and so for the first time in 1 year. when he met wook, i can feel and see that she is just forcing herself to keep loyal to wook and telling herself that she still in love with him. she hates her boyfriend and her friend for betraying her, so for sure she doesnt want to be the same, hence she is trying hard to keep her loyalty to wook. i dont sense any love coming from her when she met wook. in contrary, when she met so, i can see how much she had missed him and how she long to see him. she continues to feel worry about him. for now, she is trying to distance herself from So might be because 1) her guilt and worry. she doesnt want so to have any more trouble because of her. 2) to keep her loyalty 3)she fails to understand her own heart

It's clear to me too she has feelings for him. What she's afraid of is that she herself is going to be responsible for changing him into the man that she believes kills his brothers. She believes she's already taken one step down that road by doing his make up. Su doesn't believe So was a danger to them until she stepped up. Her fear is that she's going to change him for the worse, and that fear is as much for him as for his brothers.

We can condemn her for cowardice, or commend her for her bravery. She allowed berself to fall in love with Wook when she knew she shouldn't. She's not allowing herself to do the sane with So, the consequences are even greater to her mind. Whatever she feels for him is being suppressed with an iron will Sometimes, seeming passivity is the greatest courage of all.

Just doesn't always make for exciting tv.

If it was just about her future visions then what is she trying to do? Push him towards it? or push him away from it ?

How does telling him to stay away and that he brings back bad memories help in either objective? .... Except hurting WS, what IS she doing ?

0

Agree with you Barbrey....maybe it's just my interpretation but the scene where So appears while Hae Soo is doing laundry made me cry like no other scene...So's lines are so perfect, ...they are the lines of someone who knows her so well...there's a certain intimacy and ease when they talk to each other like this...it's been a year but they meet as if it's only been a few minutes..."You never listen I told you to stay at the Daminwon"....It sounds like a husband scolding his wife...The way she tries to run away but as soon as she sees the mask she is all concern and worry....did you run out of make up? Trying to guess what his feeling, and how to help him ....these moments say more about how Hae Soo feels about So, than all her words turning him away. I hope So can piece it together...I suspect Hae So has fallen more deeply in love with So and the intensity scares her....

0

@bipps99

She's trying not to do anything at all. That's why she wants to get sent away from the palace. She doesn't want to influence anything. But the king bluntly tells her it doesn't matter if she's far away or not. She needs to just live in her present, not let herself be influenced by what she sees. What will be will be. That's the advice Ji Mong gave her before as well. But with a personality like Su's - well, how can she help trying to help, and very likely making things worse. But that's her fate.

As for Wang So, I GUESS it's possible she could tell him she has visions of the future and he's going to kill all his brothers and she's going to influence him to do that. Or she could tell him to stay away, he brings bad memories, she's bad luck - anything other than the former which he wouldn't believe anyway. He's already been shown to be the least superstitious person in Goryeo and even says this episode he doesn't believe in fate. The first explanation would be useless.

0

@Maui - yes that's my interpretation. Her feelings for So started way back when he grabbed her wrist and she then felt it herself and put the bracelet back over the scar. In kdrama lingo, she felt her heart "flutter'. That was obvious to most of us. But she already loved Wook so suppressed that feeling. It's what we all do when we're in a relationship and someone else comes along that we're strongly attracted to.

So she's been strongly attracted to him the whole time, she cares about him, and is moreover his friend, as you say, so the ingredients are there, and then what happens when he starts saving her life while Wook seems to turn his back on her?

If not for the visions, and what she thinks she knows about history, this would be a done deal. Somehow Su's going to have to learn that So's fate is So's fate, no matter what she does or doesn't do. I just hope it doesn't take her learning that Eun's death at his hands was not something he wanted but couldn't avoid, or something like that. I don't want to wait much longer for her to get over this, to me, very understandable fear.

I rewatched this episode for the laundry scene alone. And if you watch closely, you can see that IU holds her breath when LGK hugs her from behind. And she only lets go when he starts talking again. Even as she's pushing him away later, those are pretty clear acting directions from the director to indicate her state of mind.

I imagine the acting directions are like "hold your breath like you can't believe he's back. And then let go when he starts talking again and you know he's real." Like beat by beat, that's how I see it playing out.

@Forsythia, Barbrey, cherryarrow, Maui, and jan - Before this episode, I also thought that she had some feelings for So but hasn't realized it yet. When So came up behind her, I did see her concern for So. She was worried about his makeup and scar and well-being. But she rejects him repeatedly. I guess we can argue that she is afraid of turning him into a brutal being; so, she is pushing him away even though her feelings are strong. But then why ask Wook if he missed her? When she says that, I feel like she was thinking about Wook for the past year and wanted to see him instead of So. In that case, whatever concern she showed So was friendship. That was my interpretation.

I think the Wook-Soo ship is already dead. The interaction between Wook and Soo by the river was not romantic at all. The way she said "did you even miss me" sounds accusing.

But I really wouldn't mind they speed up the relationship between So and Soo... PD nim COME ON

Love doesn't die overnight. At first, she was still hopeful, when she kept looking back at him. But one year later and I presumed he didn't contact her at all, her love is truly dead, that's why she said "Did you even miss me?"

This episode officially nuke my Wook-Soo ship.
The scene where they turn each other's back but kept looking back hoping for a call to retrieve any remaining pieces just did it. Head took over heart, a break-up which is second saddest after death :'( The one who got away.

I actually like the transition of falling out of a serene love (Wook) to falling in passionate love (So). Makes the RAWR factor stronger. Too bad this episode bad editing is coming back just like a plague. Was hoping for more sexy rebound time, instead of the other princes' romance. And one year passed but only Jung was sending medicine to Soo??? *sudden headache*

And this is random but Yo's face and attitude reminds me of the boy I used to fight at primary school.

Oh what could have been for sexy rebound. If the writer didn't have the time or subtlety to move from one ship to another convincingly, then at least give us freaky times( the luuuucky kind) to tide us over! I'm fairly certain Wang So will be up for it. Maybe through that, she'll come to realize her feelings maybe more than she expected or foresaw.

After the epic-ness of the last episode, this was such a frustrating watch. I felt like I'd missed an episode.

When did Wook and Yo become allies? When did the king investigate into Hae Soo's background? And if he knew all along about So becoming king, why throw him (literally and figuratively) into the wolves? It's like all the plot points were just dropped without sufficient explanation and logical build up.

Thank goodness for So, whose motives and behavior remained consistent. Even Yeon Hwa had her great moments. She's really a great character; gutsy, ambitious and not afraid to do what it takes.

Wook really turned detestable for me this week. His concern for Hae Soo rang false; everything was really about him, his hurt, his agony, his dilemma. Really nauseating.

Here's hoping for more narrative cohesion and logic in the next episode. Sigh.

this is just bad production planned, we can't excuses them because we "predict" they have many memory, they didn't need to show it all,
they need to tell what needed to be 20 ep, just that,
they don't have to be 24 ep
just make a coherent 20 ep without highlighted all the character,

why they should be 24 anyway if they can't even make 20 good episode,

0

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree cherryarrow! The Chinese version was 35 ep. The original story obviously has a lot of content in it. The writers, ( and all else involved), we're way too short-sighted to think that they could squeeze it all in only 20 episodes. They could have stretched it to 24 (sweet spot) for a smoother flow. I bet there is so much footage left on the cutting room floor, it would be nice if they could re-release it with everything they filmed.

On another note, we are what, 12 episodes in and our OTP, still can't be together? Ugh! Growing impatient here! So would have had me as soon as he scooped me up on that horse. I sorta understand Su, but I don't. That smile So had, would have made me weak in the knees. If there was anyone to have a blind love for, it would be So. At least you know that he will protect you with every once of his being. Does So have to marry YH before you finally realize and confess your feelings for him? Come-on Su!!

If I remember correctly, Yo invited Wook to join him at the archery "contest". And since Wook decided to go for the throne himself last episode, he needs to ally with either CP or Yo, since his own family is not strong enough to support him in the fight for the throne.

I think it's becoming apparent that the king has been grooming So for kingship, by sending him to train secretly under the general, to learn fighting & military strategies etc. And the latest stint as an envoy adds to his training. I'm guessing the king knew that his preferred heir, the CP, won't last long with all the crocodiles circling around him, and wants So to be a strong support for the CP, and if the CP gets offed, So can take over.

I just realised that the drama each episode didn't confirm anything or any prediction I've thought or just give me a real monologue, so we left with guessing and follow our own story line, that probably why I feel so disappointed, the story didn't feel like the story I knew anymore

"hasn't found any subs I can understand at least 50 %..."

If you're talking about English subs, then you're looking in the wrong place because there are great subs out there already. If you're talking about other language subs, then I probably can't help you.

The "problem" with this drama is it leaves a lot up to interpretation, or requires viewers to read between the lines, focus on actions and not necessarily on words, which A LOT of viewers have a problem with. We live in a generation where EVERYTHING needs to be spelled out to us or it automatically "fails" as a story, which, as a literary student, is so frustrating to see. Use your imagination. Read between the lines. Don't expect every action to come with a 1000 word explanation of why that happened or what it might potentially mean. Wook joining Yo is not a surprise if you read between the lines of what happens during the archery scene. And a drama is definitely going to fail if you only watch raw episodes then rely on drama recaps that leave a good chunk of the episode's events out (like this one... it left so many good So moments out).

The other problem is the pacing, but that is a norm among kdramas in my experience. I have not, in all my years watching kdramas, found any kdrama that does not muck up its pacing in some way or another.

All I can say to anyone who is confused by what's happening is that if you can't keep up with what's happening, or it's not happening like you expected it would, then that's not really the drama's fault. Everything that's happened so far has been exactly what I expected, even Soo's denial and constant rejection of So. Frustrating? Definitely. But exactly what I expected because, at the end of the day, this is still a kdrama and follows the exact same rules as all the others.

already found subs now, but I haven't found one when I wrote the comment ,
I understand it without subs at least about 50 %, so I don't badly need an english sub to understand the remaining ep if I read recaps,

---Don’t expect every action to come with a 1000 word explanation of why that happened or what it might potentially mean---

I don't think I need reassurance why this drama is good or something cause I stayed but a story need to told the viewer what they are going for and they keep make us guessing,
it's not that I want the show to go my way,
but I want it to be understandable without digging through comments as a way to interpreted it,
then I realised this is what the criticism has been about, that the drama never deliver the story and not everyone had the time to get what they mean without research,

to be told that it's my fault for not understanding this confusing drama sound like the drama didn't have any glaring fault
and again it's all the viewer fault who only want easy story-telling (not the story but the way it get told/delivered)

I noticed a few historical references in this episode that is missing.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I guess the main problem with this drama is its length.
As an adaptation, it tries to follow the original which cover the story of (almost) every prince. But sadly, it has less episodes than the original.
If you realise by now we pass half of the drama and according to history Mu and Yo will be the king before So, but where are we now? Taejo not even die yet. And if following with original, there's more things to happen when 4th become the king.
And we know that kdrama is bad in cramping a story and fast paced plot as it has tendency with long brooding scene and selling the ost (compensation on no PPL in saeguk). Which is why the flow feel choppy and everything seems randomly happen so sudden for no well explained reason (well, not enough time to give proper explanation).
You see the pattern?
I expect to see more "plot-jumping" in the future episodes.

Required fields are marked *

You are so right on the “plot-jumping”! Even if there wasn't a novel and an earlier adaptation we could refer to, there are so many "insert scene" here story points.

It is as if they had no confidence in their choices, or maybe no agreement on what to air. Everyone in the creative team got to vote, and whichever ones won got on the air. Cohesion be damned.

This would have been excellent to see before So proposes to Su.

Agree! These editors seem to be crazy. Some really important scenes that would make the audience understand So better have been cut. Scenes that elevate the entire drama. :(
How in the world would anyone cut the response to a proposal!! Especially, one that clarifies the main leads intentions.

I need a reporter to ask the editors/ production team what happend. Why diminish the main lead's story lines?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I've been wondering about that ever since the 4th ep or so when the discrepancies became evident from the inconsistencies in the two versions.

You gotta wonder if the production felt that LJK was not big enough of a star to carry the show (crazy, I know) and felt there was a better chance of international success if it relied on the ensemble cast of rising eye candies like Wang Exo.

That would explain the excessive fan service at the beginning, and the cutting of crucial scenes with So-Soo. For eg, I can't believe they cut the extended part of the make up scene where Wang So tells Soo to brace herself as he would never let her go. It's such a crucial part of their ship, why would it get cut?!?

Too many vested interests, and not enough thought on maintaining story integrity. Or maybe it's down to an incompetent director. God knows how anyone can think that many close ups is what viewers enjoy.

Totally makes sense. When a relationship ends, most of us want it to have been true, not an illusion, but not meant to be. Su's been grieving the end for a year, missing him while knowing it's over, and her question of did yoh miss me is such a natural, poignant one in the circumstances. It's a question I'd have liked to ask my various exes, and he gives the answer I'd lime to receive from them, while not wanting to get back together with them.

This episode make me feel so many different emotions, but mostly a felt let down, just like everyone said episode 11 was so emotional jam pack is like the story went 4 steps forward but took 10 steps backwards. I understand how Su feels and the guilt she feels but she needs to be honest to So by having a nice long honest conversation, to really speak about the horrendous things that had happened to her and how it makes her feel. I need for Su and So been on the same level emotionally time is running out and she still have not made a true decision to move on from Wook.

One year away and now So knows how to sweet-talk. These "You still looks beautiful as always" and "If you do not like me, we can divorce after leaving the palace" make my heart ached and melted at the same time. It was just beautifully sad. I find the way Soo avoiding So quite convincing, it would be disappointing if she accepted his love right away, especially after what happened to Court lady Oh. Such an incident can shut down any person, and Soo also cares for people around her a lot. The thing I cannot understand is how deep her feelings toward Wook still are. A whole year has passed, which I believe must have been the toughest year of her life, and all she cares about is whether he misses her or not. Her heart should have gone cold after seeing his back again and again.
Talking about Wook, despite how much I adored him in the first episodes, I'm done sympathizing with him. Wook is smart, truly smart, but also coward. All the "I love you" "I miss you" things do not mean anything if you cannot stand beside her in her needy time. I had high expectations for Wook and thought he would always held his head upright and admit his faults. But he pushed Soo to death and then blamed So for that. If it were not for So, Soo could have lost her life. If he truly loved her and were the gentleman he always posed to be, he should at least be grateful to So for that. I fell in love with all the small romantic things Wook did for Soo in the past, so it broke my heart to see him now, cold, selfish and coward.

That's right! There was *no voiceover* in the international version I watched! I couldn't understand Hae Soo in this episode at all (despite her trauma), and thought the show just went off the rails with:

-her continued rejection of So (what about last episode's ending?!?)
-her continued longing for Wook (what about last episode's ending?!?)
-the randomness of the king saying she's like a daughter to him (out of nowhere) *and* knowing she knows the future;
-the randomness of Hae Soo's apparently long-standing friendship with the rebel-princess-disguised-as-a-gisaeng, which we have never before seen nor heard of;
-why the king needs to be assassinated when he's already apparently at death's door;
-and there's probably more I'm forgetting, luckily.

Good things in this episode:
-the acting skills of LJG and KHN
-the improved acting of IU
-Wook's cold-blooded reciprocal using of Yeon Hwa
-Yeon Hwa's bold and dangerous rejection of Evil Queen S
-Yo's gorgeous eyeliner, earrings and outfits
-well, the continued beautiful hanbok for everyone, really

Last week's episode was like the shining, glorious moment when all the plates being juggled in the air were in perfect synch. This week's episode is like the moment when they start to fall, one by one. I so hope the show can recover with only a few dropped plates; but despite fearing the worst, I will continue to watch for LJG's and KHN's great acting, and for the beauty of the costumes/set design.

Ok, so I know people don't like comparing this to the original C version, but I guess once you've watched it, you really can't help it. The time lapses there were HUGE. Like yearS. Im not sure if it was better accepted because Ruoxi really did make good use of her talents from the future and was only made to suffer the laundry later on after refusing a marriage order by the Emperor. No terrible physical torture. Just a lot of Qi imbalance.

Im actually ok with her looking pitiful here. Lady Oh's death made me feel really depressed. Like, I haven't really tried to change anything, and yet she died, so why bother trying at all. We all like our heroines inspirational, brave and spunky though, because in real life, Id probably be a coward and just die in a corner. (Her one year limp from the torture depresses me in so many levels. I broke my right knee muscles in 2012 and I have never been able to dance right since.)

But I agree with some of the disorientation too. But still, not disappointed with the episode as I was in the earlier ones.

As we all know how the real history went, and how the Chinese version ended, I'm still bracing myself for more heartache.

I kinda glossed over the disturbing feeling it left in me, but it remained; as did the the somewhat yucky feeling when he kept letting it slip in front of his wife (whom he knew loved him) that he had a crush on Hae Soo, her young cousin.

I really hated that when he visited her in the prison after she was tortured, he dropped her hand out of jealousy when she asked him, full of worry, about So, who was poisoned. She had just been tortured, and he had done nothing to try to stop it!

Then he did nothing to try to stop her execution!

Then he turned his back on her again in the rain!

Then he didn't contact her for a whole year while she was working hard physical labor!

Then he let her be bullied by others in front of him, and did nothing to comfort or help her!

No aid, no comfort, no food, no medicine, nothing...all that despite his promises of marriage and professions of love.

I don't hate Wook (in fact, I can see what makes him very attractive); but I definitely hate what he does; and see him as a lost cause for Hae Soo. I would not trust his words at all, because his actions speak loud and clear.

I am really curious: what would be the crack of trust that would be the point of no return for you?

Okay when you put it like that I COMPLETELY understand how he has failed her. He has failed her in a lot of retrospects - ESPECIALLY considering how he made so many promises of marriage and love and protection.
I revise my earlier statement: I believe that this is the turning point and we will now be leading away from that relationship. That being said however, I just don't know why I still love Wook so much. I feel so much pain at their love because I really believe that if the circumstances had been good for them, they would have worked.
Wook has failed her. He could not protect her - or even stick by her side when she was suffering.
Why do I love Wook??? You make it sound crazy. And it probably is! But I love him SO MUCH and I don't understand why either.
Okay here is what I think: I think I don't see how Wook's actions have been harmful because we haven't been shown Su grieving about his actions that much. She is emotionless and blank and I realise that it is to cover up her hurt and deal with it, but it makes me hard to recognize how big of a deal his actions are.
I think for me, if we had been able to see Su's reactions and her hurt more obviously (I don't know - even if she's masking up her hurt, I feel as though if the editing or writing had been more well done then I would have connected with her more emotionally and not been able to forgive Wook) then I could have been more with you on this.
The crack of trust that would be the point of no return for me would be something that shows me that Su cannot forgive him. I believe if he started to right his wrongs now and be what he promised he would be, she would be able to forgive him. She wants to trust him again. If he gave her a LITTLE TINY NUGGET, she would go for it, I think.

Ah, I understand now where you're coming from. Thanks for explaining! I had never thought of it in that way: that because Hae Soo is not visibly emoting her feelings of hurt and betrayal, it's hard to feel those things on her behalf.

Also, so far as Hae Soo showing that she cannot forgive Wook: I don't think she is that kind of person that holds grudges. I can't imagine seeing her really angry with Wook.

I really don't think there is anyone she couldn't forgive or try to understand, at least. She might be wary of them and try to avoid them if she thinks they are bad or dangerous, but she tends to empathize with and feel sorry for people. That's both her good point and her bad point! (Bad because I think she should never have anything to do with Wook again, if she can help it. Nothing good can come of it; just more heartbreak, disappointment, and betrayal.)

Don't forget to study for your bio test! ;)

He's plotting to kill King Taejo, his own daddy, with Yo...

That's point of no return for me.

But I still want to see episode 13 to make sure. Who knows probably he has another plan to save King.

But if he doesn't.... Welcome to the dark side, Wookie!

Nope. Not everyone here hates Wook! I'm not on his ship but I understand him as a character. He's weak and he's paying for it. He doesn't look happy to me. :(

Yeah, Su still loves Wook but god knows he's done everything he can not to deserve an inch of her trust.

He does nothing at all while she's almost forcibly married off (seriously the closest he ever came to doing anything FOR her was to go on his knees in front of the King with an attempt to sidetrack him about the Hae family), wrongly accused, tortured, and begging on her knees for some solidarity/mercy, actually turns his back on her, and even now, has ignored her for a year.....in which time he's decided to prioritise his quest for power for himself and his family, over any promises he ever made her.

I'm not surprised Su is still clinging to her feelings for him, but I think we're pretty clearly presented with the idea that this is Not Healthy.

Thank you so much HeadsNo2..your recap is what i anticipated the most! Well said.
So, are we back to the way the show used to be before ep11 with one scene jumped to another less than smoothly? I'm frustated.
The highlight of this ep for me is Yeonhwa interaction with evil queen.. The princess is way smarter than anyone else in Goryeo. I'm kinda rooting for her :D the way her brain works is just beyond...

As for hae soo, I understand she's scared enough to want to avoid dragging everyone especially So, down with her "bad luck". But her sudden change of behaviour after meeting the king should not be that apruptly portrayed.
Back to editing mess i guess. Too bad cause i'm already invested in the story a lot.

Wook's empty promises are frustrating me out. We spent so much time seeing him act all saint to soo offering kind words but no action at all. You threw her away last time, why bother coming back with empty words if youre not gonna do a thing --"

On the other hand, so's persistence in taking soo with him.. His love feels so pure, as if he just wants to save her from all the depression she gets in her current living. I mean, we have wook who keeps trying to win everything but ends up getting nothing. And then we have so who is willing to let go of everything if that means he could grant freedom to soo... And guess who later ends up winning~?

Also, i wonder if soo's premonitions are actually dejavus.. Like maybe it's something her unconscious mind remembers from her past studies, despite her claiming that she couldnt recall her histories.. I still dont get why she doesnt just agree to go away with so, since she doesnt want so to become king.. right?

Or does she finally realize after the convo that so will be king regardless what happens.. so she wants to stay to ensure that at least he wont kill others?

You know what pissed me off so much?

He's been turning his back on Soo for one freaking year...

And what did he do when he visited her for the first time in one year?

He made excuses... to save his own face... to justify his cowardice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, if you want to leave her... leave her... if you want to be with her... be with her...

It's not as dangerous or hard as you makes it sounds to be

Heck... even Jung can give Soo medicines... and he's alive and well

Not to mention that he could have gone to the King and said "You gave your permission for my marriage in front of the entire family - so here's who I want to marry." Nobody expects Wook to fight for the throne (because he is so damn passive; even now as he's supposedly plotting - his plan is "don't do anything right now", LOL.)

But instead he sat on his ass and wished and felt sorry for himself. Pah! I think Hae Soo dodged a bullet there.

-Wang Wuss i mean wang wook had 1 whole freaking year to make good with Hae Soo. He should hang his head in shame.
- Sneaky sister is gaming both kohl-eyes and hatching a backup plan with wolf boy just in case either becomes the king.
-Baek Ah???? Why????
I will come back with a few comments after the filter in my has a chance to censor i mean process

Oh, you SO do not want a man like Wang So in real life. WS is waaaaay too broken, clingy, and unstable.

Trust me on this one - you wouldn't want to take on that kind of project.

(Now, if you're asking where are all the men who are as beautiful, lithe, and breathtaking as LJG, I'm right there with you. I am firmly on the side of more decorative young men being a good thing.)

frankly, as So and Wook currently stand, I wouldn't want either of them in real life.

One is a wuss who makes empty promises to the girl he loves and doesn't do a thing to stand beside her when the whole world is against her, the other is broken and obsessive and would be a huge strain if you don't love him back. Though of the two, assuming reciprocated feelings in both cases, I'd take my chances with 2 ahead of 1 - at least he offers actual support and loyalty.

Agreed, Pogo, on all accounts! Luckily this is a fantasy, though, and we can enjoy the pretty and the machinations without real-life consequences! :)

Have you ever noticed how many romances feature a heroine having to decide between two men? This is just not an issue in most shows aimed at men. I think it goes beyond mere wish fulfillment (though that is a part of the trope): I think it has to do with us trying to figure out how to pick a mate. Even our eggs accept or reject certain sperm!

I love the way we are all so invested in discussing/arguing who's the better choice, what are the red flags, what are the deal-breakers, what makes a good mate...stories may be the way we get to try out decisions without actual consequences.

This drama is getting better. I love how the story goes. But, damn, how i want to kick Wang Wook's a** so hard! Way to go, So. You told Wook the right word.

Heads, thank you so much for being dependable.

There's this... hopelessness in Soo's eyes that cuts through me. I agree that her current self is a bit annoying since we know what she's capable of from based on the first few episodes. I can't help but feel for her you know. Lady Hae died while caring for her to the nth level. Court Lady Oh died in her place. Wook literally turned his back on her during her lowest of low. She just gave up. There's only so much you can take you know. No matter which century you are from.

As viewers, we know how much So loves her. We want her to see that pronto but her mind is convinced that she loves someone else. Though I do think with 1 year of separation from So and inactivity from Wook, she should've reflected more and realized it all by now. But I'm still willing to forgive her because I love this show, damn it. Please Soo, I need you to snap out of it and proceed to be on your way to So. Our sanity depends on it.

Yeonhwa. They way she dealt with Queen SMS should be the standard female attitude from now on with the main female leads of this show. So satisfying.
Regarding her proposal to So, yes I believe that she might have some feelings there. But her sudden proposal seemed like a calculated move to me. She now fully recognize the danger she put herself in not just from Queen SMS and Yo but also from the repercussions of what she did to her brother. She needs So now more than ever to protect her because she knows he will.. IF they marry.

Speaking of Wook, Kang Ha Neul I love you, but I have to admit that your crying out to Soo in total despair gave me satisfaction. That's what you get for turning your back on her - figuratively and literally - you jerk.

If there's one gem this show gave, it is Wang So.
“I wouldn’t even have had a future if it weren’t for Su,” So replies. “Now that I’ve said it, I know for certain—without her, I’m nothing.”
That my friends... is what you call a Prince.

Wang So is going half crazy that Wang Wook thinks he has a say in everything Hae Soo. Does he know Wuss like Hae Soo?
Wang So will go diabolical when he finds out Hae Soo loves/loved/carries torch/said no to him because of Wuss.
Dont hate me too much. I have been waiting for this ep on pins and needles

I'd cut Soo a little slack. Imagine being thrown into the past, hundreds of centuries back. I'm not sure how I would adjust, esp. knowing that there's going to be bloodshed among the princes I'm close to. Must be confusing, even if you're being advised not to get involved.

Then she meets someone who she thinks she can trust with her life (Wook), pledges to be his one and only, then all of a sudden this same person she's vowed to live the rest of her life with isn't there for her anymore. I think she spent that year in shock, while clinging to the hope of still being with Wook. That's why she told Wang So that she won't wait for him - because she's still waiting for Wook.

I'm sure in the coming episodes Wook's darkness will burn even brighter, and she will have no choice but to let him go. But for now, she's still clinging to the life that Wook promised her. And I think that's a very human progression.

Definitely. IMO, I really like how they portrayed Soo's mental state. The girl had been through a lot and it's understandable to wallow into grief.

But please Hae Soo, you only have 8 episodes left and we don't want to spend those 8 hours watching you walking like a zombie. Go get 'em gurl!

I think she told So she would not be waiting for him because she knew she would be kicked out of the palace and also determined to cut ties with all people around her. I believe she already gave up on Wook, but she could not totally get rid of her feelings and just wanted to know if he ever loved her at all.
