W–Two Worlds: Episode 14
by girlfriday
Let’s be honest—on a good day, Dad makes my blood boil for the string of terrible decisions he’s made and the effect that’s had on his daughter’s life. He’s weak-willed and pathetic, and pretty much the source of all my frustrations when it comes to our hero’s pain. But when two adversaries stand to lose the one person they both love, maybe there’s a chance that they can put aside the mountain of issues between them and save the day? Come on, guys, your girl needs you! Save first, therapy later!
EPISODE 14 RECAP
Kang Chul runs to the hospital in tears, and finds Yeon-joo surrounded by doctors trying to resuscitate her. They shock her twice and manage to get a heartbeat, but she’s lying so still…
Back in the manhwa world, Assemblyman Han arrives at the crime scene and puts on a pair of gloves before digging around for any evidence that might link him to New-Face Killer. He retrieves the warehouse address he wrote down at gunpoint in Chul’s car, and then he roots around on New-Face’s dead body for the phone containing that incriminating recording between them.
He opens the trunk of New-Face’s car too, and whatever he finds inside, it’s something of interest. He’s annoyed to find his hired henchmen dead, all but one, and confused when he discovers the spot where Yeon-joo was shot, but no body.
Out in the real world, Dad’s no-face slowly disintegrates… revealing his original face underneath. Oh thank ye drama gods—are we done with the faceless portion of our programming?
New-Face must really be dead-dead, because Dad wakes up in full control of his faculties, and looks stunned to be holding a hammer in front of his smashed tablet. And magically, he seems rather fine for someone who hasn’t breathed or eaten in a while. He calls out for Su-bong and Yeon-joo, but the workshop is empty.
Dad picks up the phone to call Yeon-joo, but then he starts having memory flashes of kidnapping Yeon-joo and holding her up at gunpoint. Gack, is he having New-Face’s memories? Dad’s face twists up in horror as he realizes what’s happened.
Su-bong is still crouched outside the front gate where Kang Chul told him to stay, like a good puppy. He calls Yeon-joo repeatedly, on the verge of another breakdown, when finally someone picks up—it’s Dad.
They rush out of the workshop together, with Dad getting behind the wheel despite Su-bong’s flailing protests. Su-bong deduces that Dad is using New-Face’s memories to track Yeon-joo, and he keeps glancing over at Dad to double-check that he’s still him.
Dad drives to the warehouse where he remembers New-Face shooting Yeon-joo, and the construction worker who found her tells them that she was taken to the hospital. Dad is beside himself and expecting the worst, and Su-bong tries to tell him that she’ll be okay. It doesn’t do much good.
Kang Chul paces outside the intensive care unit, ignoring Su-bong’s calls. His hand continues to flicker in and out, but he just hides it behind his back when the doctor comes out. Chul’s face falls to hear the news that Yeon-joo isn’t waking up despite the surgery going well; the doctor tells him to prepare for the possibility that she won’t pull through.
Dad and Su-bong arrive at the emergency room, where the nurse tells them that Yeon-joo is brain-dead. Dad collapses to the floor and demands to know where she is, and the nurse looks troubled.
Chul sits by Yeon-joo’s bedside, quietly spilling tears. He reaches out to hold her hand, but then he sees his hand turn into a manhwa drawing and threaten to disappear again. Outside, he hears the police officer come by to ask questions about the shooting, and when he comes in, both Chul and Yeon-joo are gone.
Ah, this turns out to be a flashback, and the nurse tells Dad and Su-bong that both Yeon-joo and her husband disappeared without a trace.
Yeon-joo’s mom is worried that she hasn’t come home yet, and Su-bong grimaces when Mom calls. Dad tells him to lie that he doesn’t know anything, and Su-bong’s voice trembles as he tells Mom that Yeon-joo was called to the hospital and left her phone here.
The only person who looks more distressed than Su-bong is Dad, who slumps down in his chair and reaches for a bottle of pills, and downs it with scotch. Oh noooooo, Dad! This is not the time to incapacitate yourself!
Dad just curls up in bed crying Yeon-joo’s name, overcome with depression. But then the sound of the doorbell gets him up, and Su-bong scrambles outside to the gate, hoping that it’s Yeon-joo.
It’s Kang Chul, looking grim and defeated as he waits for Su-bong to open the gate. He ignores the questions about Yeon-joo until he gets inside, where Dad has gotten himself upright (just barely) and out of bed.
Chul says he moved Yeon-joo to the manhwa world because the doctor here said there was no hope. He explains, “If she dies here, I can’t reverse it.” Thank goodness one of you has a brain today.
Chul says that he took her to the hospital there, but it was the same diagnosis, and so after a few days he moved her to the hotel because he couldn’t explain away the gunshot wound. He says that they spent a week like that in the hotel, and in flashback Chul clutches Yeon-joo’s hand and lights up when she opens her eyes and looks at him.
In the present, Chul says, heart in his throat, “She opened her eyes, just once. For a brief moment…” Agh, why does that sound so final?
Dad asks shakily what happened then, and Chul’s lip begins to tremble and his eyes fill with tears. “She died,” he finally ekes out. Dad crumples to the floor in shock, and Su-bong bursts into wailing sobs while Chul quietly continues to cry.
In the morning, Professor Crazy Dog bursts into Seok-bum’s office and asks after Yeon-joo’s father, who’s been admitted into the hospital for stress and mixing pills with alcohol. Crazy Dog sighs and admits guiltily that this is all his fault—last night he put up some negative comments online about the manhwa peppered with swear words, and he’s convinced that he put Oh Sung-moo in the hospital. Aw, you’re the nicest anti-fan ever.
Su-bong takes a call from Kang Chul and steps out of Dad’s hospital room just as Crazy Dog enters. He chides Dad for drinking again when he expressly told him to lay off the booze. Crazy Dog tries to lighten the mood by talking about the manhwa and asks, “Why did Oh Yeon-joo suddenly die?”
Crazy Dog admits that she’s kind of a useless character, but when she died like that, he wasn’t happy about it. That just brings all of New-Face’s memories flooding back for Dad, and the memory of shooting Yeon-joo in the back overwhelms him, and he suddenly darts out of bed.
Dad runs barefoot down the hall like a man possessed, and Kang Chul happens to see him run into the stairwell and gives chase. Dad runs straight for the rooftop and begins to climb over the railing to jump. What, seriously?! DAAAAD! GET IT TOGETHER!
He’s halfway over the railing when Chul finds him and yanks him backward. Dad struggles and screams to be let go, but Chul manages to pull him back down safely. Phew.
Chul asks why he’s doing this, and Dad breaks down in tears saying, “I did it. I shot her. I shot Yeon-joo.” Chul tries to tell him that it was the killer who shot Yeon-joo, not him, but Dad can’t separate himself from the memory and the guilt, and cries, “I shot my daughter! I can’t live any longer!”
But that’s enough guilt babble for Chul and he shakes Dad, shouting that there’s work to be done: “You’re the only one who can save her! So get it together! You can’t break down. You have to save your daughter!” Dad doesn’t see how, when she’s already dead. Well, you were never very creative to begin with, were you?
Chul says that there’s a way to save her, and explains that Yeon-joo already started to become a manhwa character the moment she married him—as a main character, she was able to get hurt inside the manhwa world, which is why she died when she was shot.
But Chul points out that this means the opposite is true too—that she can be saved in the manhwa and brought back to life, just like he was. Chul explains that he took her to the manhwa world before she died for that reason, and says with conviction that he’s going to bring her back no matter what. “I won’t ever give up! I’m going to save her!” he shouts.
Dad is too depressed to see any hope of saving her though, and cries that the tablet has been destroyed so there’s no way to draw it. But Chul won’t be deterred, and is convinced that they will find some way.
Crazy Dog and Su-bong wander the halls looking for Dad, and Su-bong asks what Crazy Dog could’ve possibly said to make Dad suddenly disappear. Crazy Dog innocently says he only brought up the manhwa and asked why Oh Yeon-joo died, and Su-bong grabs his hair and screams bloody murder: “Why would you ask that, WHY?!”
Su-bong’s rant can probably be heard from outer space, and he’s so busy screaming at Crazy Dog for asking such a thoughtless question that he misses Kang Chul walking up right behind him with Dad on his back.
Hilariously, Su-bong turns on a dime and goes from violent ranting to politely asking for a nurse the second he sees them. Crazy Dog stands there stunned, wondering what he said that was so wrong and why his feelings were hurt just now.
Once Dad is safely tucked in bed, Kang Chul asks Su-bong to look after him and leaves again. Dad watches him go and thinks back to the rest of their conversation up on the roof. Chul had said that Dad couldn’t possibly know how he felt about Yeon-joo.
Kang Chul: “Yeon-joo is my only family—not a fake family that you made for me, but a real family with a physical entity. Instead of manufactured memories, I have real memories with her. Instead of a predetermined fate, she’s the fate I chose myself, for the first time, by my will alone. So I can’t give up. Yeon-joo is proof that I am a person like you—that I am human.”
Chul said that he was going to save Yeon-joo and be happy with her, and he refused to back down or be discouraged by anyone. He was convinced that a late-game reversal was possible, and declared that he would get his happy ending no matter what. Suck it, Fate!
Dad seemed moved by his words, and then as Chul piggybacked Dad down from the roof, he said that Dad’s life mattered to him now too, “Not because you’re the god who made me, but because you’re the father of my wife. You’re already my family.” *sniff*
Chul said with a little smile that Dad might not acknowledge it yet, but that’s how he thinks of it anyway, and he warned Dad not to hurt himself anymore. Dad didn’t say anything in response, but just let Chul carry him back to bed like a baby. And here I thought Kang Chul couldn’t find yet another way to be swoony, but there it is.
Back in the present, Dad’s lips curl up in the tiniest of smiles, and he mutters his usual insult for Chul—arrogant bastard—but this time he says it almost like it’s a term of endearment.
Su-bong shuffles after Chul to see him off, and begs him to be careful. Chul tells him not to cry (aw) and to wait for his S.O.S. He doesn’t have a plan yet, but intends to call on Su-bong for help when he needs to.
Back on the rooftop, Dad had said that he’d only ever used one tablet, which was now destroyed. But Chul was sure that New-Face wouldn’t have had him smash it if he didn’t have a backup plan of some sort—that tablet was his lifeline, and he wouldn’t have gotten rid of it so easily.
Sure enough, we see New-Face ask for Dad to draw him a duplicate tablet, back while he was on the run after kidnapping Yeon-joo. With Chul’s prodding, Dad recalled that he drew a second tablet in the trunk of New-Face’s car.
Chul didn’t remember seeing the tablet on the evidence list from the crime scene, but then he and Dad both landed on the same conclusion: Assemblyman Han. He discovered it in New-Face’s trunk and moved it before the cops came.
In the present, Assemblyman Han’s assistant tells him that the tablet is used by professional illustrators, and he wonders why on earth the killer would be carrying around something like this when it isn’t even a weapon. He gets called away to a meeting, and leaves it turned off on his desk.
Chul has no idea if the duplicate tablet will work, but there’s only one way to find out. He breaks into the real-world equivalent of Assemblyman Han’s office and takes out his gun before summoning himself back to the manhwa world.
Chul materializes in the empty office and goes to grab the tablet, but he stops short when he notices that it isn’t identical to the original. He thinks, “Trap,” but as he’s having that very thought, someone hits him from behind and sticks a syringe in his neck.
The room starts spinning and Chul goes down, groggy and unable to fight back. Assemblyman Han’s voice rings in his ears, as he shows Chul the real tablet and asks if this is what he’s looking for.
When Chul regains consciousness, he’s tied to a chair in a warehouse, and Assemblyman Han waxes nostalgic about how he missed this old dynamic between them. He happily points out that thanks to Chul faking his own death, he could kill him right now and get away scot-free.
Assemblyman Han asks if Chul wants to know where he got that syringe that he attacked him with, and he points to the tablet. He demonstrates by pulling up the drawing of the syringe on the screen and then pressing Enter, which makes it materialize on the spot. And then he presses Delete, and it vanishes. Crap.
Chul winces and Assemblyman Han laughs like a kid at Christmas. Earlier that night, he’d changed his mind about leaving for that meeting, and began to search through the tablet’s hard drive. He found folders filled with drawings of various models of guns, and was terrified when pulling up a drawing made that very gun appear in his hand.
In the present, he tells Chul that the tablet is filled with all sorts of poisons, and tells him to pick his poison, literally. He makes another syringe appear and sticks it right at Kang Chul’s neck, but pulls away, enjoying the taunting.
Assemblyman Han says he finally gets why Chul and New-Face were fighting to the death, but now he wants real answers, like what the hell this tablet is, whom it belongs to, and how Chul appears in his office whenever he wants. He says the real interrogation begins now, and grabs a steel pipe with a glint in his eye.
Assemblyman Han swings at Kang Chul full-force with the pipe over and over and over again, until Chul is beaten to a pulp and lying on the ground covered in blood.
Thankfully Assemblyman Han gets called away to a meeting, giving Chul a short reprieve from the torture. Chul spits out the word “hospital” before Assemblyman Han is about to leave, and asks to be taken to the hospital.
In the real world, Su-bong paces in the hospital hallway waiting to hear from Kang Chul, and he gasps when a new episode of the webtoon pops up on his phone. He makes a cross over his head and shoulders (pfff) before clicking on it. It’s bang-up-to-date as usual, and Su-bong lets out a loud yelp when he sees Chul being tortured by Assemblyman Han. He nags at his phone, “I told you to be careful!”
Back in the manhwa world, Assemblyman Han listens intently to something that Kang Chul says, though we don’t get to hear it. Tears spill from Chul’s eyes, but the only reaction that Assemblyman Han shows is rage and disbelief, and he kicks Chul in the face before walking out, tablet in hand.
He orders two henchmen to guard Chul and not give him a single drop of water because he’s already a dead man. And then he calls someone to say that he’ll be making a quick stop before his meeting.
The henchmen put Chul back in his chair, and he asks them what time it is. When he finds out that thirty minutes have passed, he smirks and says that “it” should be arriving soon.
Chul raises his head and says, “Park Su-bong-sshi, the item is going there. Take care of it.” And then the “To be continued” chyron appears in the corner. Woohoo, is Su-bong getting written into the story?
Out in the real world, Su-bong’s eyes widen as he reads the webtoon, and he stammers, “That’s… my name? Is he calling me? Me?” Su-bong runs into Dad’s room to show him the webtoon and the message from Chul, and wonders what the item is.
In the manhwa world, Assemblyman Han heads to the hospital with tablet in hand. He’s headed to a room on the eighth floor, and in flashback we see that Kang Chul told him the truth—that his wife died, and he needed the tablet to save her.
He said that she could be drawn back to life if he brought the tablet to its owner in the hospital, and Assemblyman Han didn’t believe him, calling it like something out of a manhwa. Chul smiled and asked, “And what you saw wasn’t like a manhwa?”
Assemblyman Han sent a few minions to Kang Chul’s penthouse to check on his story, and Chul told Do-yoon over the phone to let them in. They saw for themselves that Yeon-joo had just died, and Chul told Assemblyman Han that he’d have all the proof he needed if he took the tablet to the hospital, and had its owner draw his wife back to life.
So back in the present, Assemblyman Han does just that, like an obedient little mouse bringing his own cheese to his trap. As soon as the webtoon episode ends, Kang Chul gets zapped right back to the real world, leaving the henchmen scratching their heads.
Assemblyman Han arrives at the hospital room, but the patient there is a woman, not Oh Sung-moo, and he figures that Chul lied to him.
At the same time, Chul concentrates on Hypothesis Three—that he can summon characters to the real world by thinking of them—and says aloud, “I summon Han Chul-ho to the real world.”
Chul shuts his eyes, and as Assemblyman Han turns to go, he suddenly materializes in Dad’s hospital room just as Su-bong wonders how the tablet and Assemblyman Han will get here.
Everyone in the room turns around at the same time to face each other, and jaws drop. Dad confirms that he’s Oh Sung-moo, but then Assemblyman Han recognizes his face and thinks he’s the killer. Su-bong, on the other hand, doesn’t wait for introductions—he just dives for the tablet the first chance he gets, and Assemblyman Han chokes him to get it back.
Dad grabs the nearest IV stand and thwacks Assemblyman Han in the back with it, and then thwacks him again in the head, and he goes down.
Dad races to get the tablet plugged in, and as soon as he turns it on, Assemblyman Han vanishes. Huh. And then a new variable: When Dad picks up his pen, his hand starts to morph into a manhwa drawing. Whaaat. He begins to draw furiously.
Factory workers discover Kang Chul lying unconscious on the floor of their warehouse, and at the same time, Yeon-joo wakes up alive and well, scaring Do-yoon half to death. She doesn’t even get to say anything before the webtoon episode ends, sending her back to the real world.
A little while later, Su-bong arrives at the factory looking for Kang Chul, but he isn’t there. Wait, he didn’t disappear, did he? Su-bong is over the moon when Yeon-joo calls, and his reaction to hearing her voice is just so happy, it kills me.
Su-bong asks everything three times like he’s hopped up on a twelve-pack of soda: “Noona? Yeon-joo noona? Is it really you? Are you okay? Can you speak? Oh you’re speaking now. Do you have all ten fingers and toes? Do you remember everything? What about where you were shot?”
Yeon-joo tells him that she woke up in the hotel and suddenly came back to this world, and she’s perfectly fine and not even in any pain. She’s just as relieved to hear that Dad is back to normal too. Su-bong tells her that Dad drew her back to life and is probably on his way to see her, since he was sitting at his desk all day just clicking refresh and waiting for the webtoon to show up online.
Su-bong says he’s here looking for Chul in the place where he was tortured, and Yeon-joo asks worriedly what he means by that. Su-bong says Chul isn’t here though, and in flashback we see that Chul was brought outside by the workers who found him, but he asked for a taxi, not an ambulance, because he needed to go to the hotel.
That was twenty minutes ago that Chul disappeared while the workers called an ambulance, and Su-bong guesses that he’s on his way to Yeon-joo. She asks if Chul is badly hurt and if Dad is okay, and Su-bong just chides her for worrying about other people when she was the one who died.
Yeon-joo figures it’ll be faster to just read the last few episodes of the webtoon for herself, and she bursts into tears to see Kang Chul being tortured to try and save her.
She heads out to the hotel driveway to wait for Chul, craning her neck and wondering why he’s so late.
As she turns around, lightning strikes and it’s suddenly pouring rain outside. Is she back in the manhwa world so soon? Yeon-joo is startled to see So-hee walk past her into the hotel, and their eyes meet. So-hee seems to think it odd but she continues on her way.
Yeon-joo looks up at the sky, where she sees a new chyron being written above her: “Final Episode.”
COMMENTS
Oh, the final episode already? I mean, I knew it was coming—the show is ending soon, after all—but it’s a little troubling for Yeon-joo to end up in the manhwa world without any preparation and without meeting Kang Chul, because the final episode means she’s now trapped there until it ends, right? There are no more to-be-continueds to use up in an emergency, and no guarantee that when the manhwa ends, Kang Chul will come back out to the real world with her. I just hope that this was Dad’s doing, in an attempt to give them a happy ending, and not the manhwa world breaking down altogether because Chul’s time is running out. I still worry about Kang Chul suddenly poofing into nothing, and now it looks like Dad’s got the same problem. Is it because of his mind-meld with New-Face? Is he now more manhwa than real? And is he disappearing because he’s lost his right to be the central villain with Assemblyman Han taking over? I can’t figure out if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but at this point, anything with a face is better than a life with no face—that much I know for sure.
I did feel a lot of the tension sap out in this episode, partly because we already know that Yeon-joo has to be brought back somehow, and partly because the way they manage to bring her back doesn’t use any new or nifty tricks. For an episode of W, it was disappointingly twist-free, and a fairly straightforward rescue, thanks to Assemblyman Han not being very bright. I find him to be less intimidating as a villain overall, which might have something to do with it. Okay, so the violent torture was scary in an unhinged way, and I don’t like how dangerous it is for him to know what the tablet can do—even without self-awareness of the manhwa world, a machine with the power of life and death is not a thing you want him to be aware of. But anyone who can be taken down by Dad and Su-bong? Not really very high on my all-time scary villain list. Right now I’m more concerned with the battle against Fate, and the rules that govern the manhwa world and keep Kang Chul tethered to that realm—they’re the real enemies now.
I was seriously about to throw my hands up and give up on Dad in this episode when he sank into depression and drank, instead of trying to find a way to save Yeon-joo. I was so done with his defeatist attitude, and so angry that he’d let go like that without even attempting to bring her back. It’s so in character though, and I do appreciate Dad as a character on a meta level because he’s such an obvious foil for Kang Chul, who was made to be everything Dad wished he could be. Dad’s pathetic weakness of character serves to highlight Kang Chul’s strengths, and I actually see envy and admiration in Dad’s eyes when he sees how Chul won’t give up on his family.
It’s actually Chul’s singular drive—to avenge his family in his youth, and to protect his family now—and it makes me sad to think that W was really Dad’s way of living out his fantasy post-divorce, where he’d be the kind of man not to ever give up on his family and lose them. It explains the villain’s sole focus on always killing Kang Chul’s family without rhyme or reason, because family was always the core of the conflict—what the hero/Dad was fighting for, what he’d lost, what he desperately wanted to regain more than life itself. And to get symbolic, it explains why the villain’s face was ultimately Dad’s own—because he’s the one who destroyed his own family.
I’m sure Dad never imagined in his wildest dreams that Kang Chul would be the one to give him a family again, but in loving Yeon-joo, Chul is actually solving both the hero’s conflict and the creator’s conflict all at once—he’s going to protect his family at all costs, and now that family happens to include Dad. It’s a neat little convergence in a relationship that otherwise has every reason to be at odds, since we’ve seen Chul go so far as to shoot his creator in an attempt to exercise his free will. But I like that Kang Chul 2.0 consistently finds better ways to do the same thing, and now he’s discovered that loving Yeon-joo and choosing a life with her is his ultimate rebellion against his predetermined fate. There are a lot of things to love about their relationship, but I like that it represents choice, and that at every step of the way, they’re actively choosing to be together and fight for their happy ending. Could Fate be so cruel as to not grant them that one thing? Don’t answer that. I want to think happy thoughts while I still can.

disclaimer: I knew this can be reaching so pardon my post if you feel it's too much and I hope the translation is okay
to commemorate that W is almost ended, I want to make a comment about how fitting the OST for this drama,
on one glance, the ost is not so popular, probably because they don't use it a lot, but I grow attached to the ending scene
but the line is so memorable
OST 1 : Where Are You - Jun Joon Young (one of my favorite)
When you look down at the world from the sky, How would it look like?
When you connect the dots of all the people, what will it become?
Maybe that will be the line that connects you and me
You’re someone I’ll meet some day,
We just don’t know, no one does
I only look at things I want to look at, I only search for things I’m curious about
But that was you, It was you
We’re walking through the same time, Connected to each other
Whether I go to you, Or you come to me
Let’s be under the same sky
We kept meeting, continuously
We just didn’t see each other
Whether it was good or bad, it didn’t matter
We always passed by
Maybe we’re actually close, and know each other really well
But we still don’t really know that truth, no one does
---------------
this is just from OST part 1 and all of the lyric totally makes sense to connected the dot between Kang Chul and Yeon Joo,
it's like a poem and I feel like they make it so well and explained the world itself,
maybe the sky is the boundary between the world, connected the dots is what make Kang Chul meets Yeon Joo,
Their meeting is unavoidable because they connected from a long time,

The 3rd: In The Illusion - Basick & INKII (my favorite)
....
You covered me, one more layer
The more I get to know you, the stronger the storm gets
Even the empty boasts that I yelled out if the goal is you
It’s not an empty boast anymore but I can’t catch you
No matter how much I empty out, I can’t fill myself with you
There’s only one thing I want that you’re not a fantasy
No, even if you are a fantasy, it’ll still be the same for me
It’s impossible to stop now, even this moment when I’m getting far from you again
It’s crueler than anything I can imagine
I need to raise the glass of goodbye some day but I can’t raise it yet
I can’t cry yet, because our puzzle hasn’t been completed yet
If only I could be a monster and swallow up everything
Please, if only I could
....
My imagination creates you
And when I see you, I imagine again
On this path with no end we’re dreaming the same dream
But why can’t we be together?
When can it be the same?
Like thick wine
Even if it gets deeper red
In the end, it’s back to the first page
I drink but I’m not getting drunk
I love you, I have swallowed you
---------------
Isn't this lyric especially beautiful?

W's OST are low-key but I like them. I love the lyrics and how they are so perfect for the events that have happened in the drama. I cannot wait for the full ost to be released because the score/instrumentals are great!

Yes, I like both closing OSTs, especially the latest one. When I listen to it's full song for the first time, I cried even though I don't understand the lyrics. I think it's because the melody is so moving. And when I listem to it while reading the translation, my tears fall even more. The lyrics are just really fit for Yeonjoo who made Chul through her imagination.

" I like that Kang Chul 2.0 consistently finds better ways to do the same thing, and now he’s discovered that loving Yeon-joo and choosing a life with her is his ultimate rebellion against his predetermined fate."
AMEN to that ! I love the dichotomies of those two parallels. And every time Kang Chul 2.0 does something right, which so far has been everything he's done yet, I cheer for him all the more because I've seen the original Kang Chul make all the wrong choices before 2.0 got to this point.

If we are to follow the multiverse theory the only reason Kang Chul remembers drowning would be because in Yeon Joo's parallel Kang Chul drowns and in current Kang Chul's parallel he changed his mind, but because of their desire for a happy ending together their parallel's merge and so Kang Chul experiences drowning and not drowning. But that doesn't explain why he doesn't remember the 'dream' since it happened in Yeon Joo's parallel?! Unless he remembers in these next few episodes....? Ahhh, what is this drama doing to me. I don't think the writer thought deeply about the science behind it either. I believe that there are only two worlds as KC said, Yeon Joo's and the one Kang Chul lived in but the manwha was a portal between the two and KC's manwha world is a piece of the second world. I conclude that either the two worlds merge or Yeon Joo and Kang Chul return to his world and W ends with them living happily ever after and Soo Bong and Meong Soo see it through the manwha.

OST 01 is my favourite and that OST the plays before the previews with Girl Singing High and then that Annoying Rap Starts and ruins the whole song.
The unnecessary usage of Raps actually ruins the songs for me. No care about music and settings and Pitch and bang Raps comes in and you are like what?

I like this about the OST and the romance
I think there is also a poetic symmetry about YJ's dad - that Kang Chul -- his creation-- who he starts out believing will destroy him -- is actually the one who saves him and gives him back the family he lost
That the creative process - and taking charge of it -- is the solution

I visit DB the most then - I listened to the podcasts, read all the recaps and comments over and over. This time, I influenced almost all of my friends to watch W while it's still ongoing. I'm ready for the backlash.
So to my understanding, Kang Chul doesn't love Yeon Joo but he treasures her because she's living proof that he's just as human as they are and that him meeting her was fate and nothing fabricated by the creator.
He's still logical afterall.

I kind of got that feeling and understanding too based on what KC said to Dad.
I really didn't (still don't) feel that KC loves YJ. I've said it in the previous recaps that his actions felt more out of care and gratitude. It adds up to me after his explanation to Dad of how much YJ meant to him because of the validation he gets from it for being human and for having his own will. This is just how I see it and I don't expect others to have the same view. Nonetheless, I still hope for a happy ending to all the good guys.

I agree with you, too. I am not 100% confident that Kang Chul loves Yeon-joo in a romantic sense, as we haven't been shown enough that that could happen. But, certainly, love born of responsibility, and of choice - I see that happening here.
I was surprised that Kang Chul embraced the fact that he was married to Yeon-joo so readily in last week's episodes, although I was also glad for that. His explanation in this episode, of how he is validated by her as his family and choice, makes sense.

I agree with you if we're talking about Kang Chul 2.0. Kang Chul 1.0 definitely loved her because their romance was so organic.
It's to Lee JongSeok's credit that I actually feel the disconnect between Kang Chul 1.0 and 2.0's feelings towards YeonJoo.

*loved her romantically, head over heels.
Kang Chul 2.0's is much more restrained, controlled and much less rash.
We understand love to be something passionate and overwhelming, like what Kang Chul 1.0 had. But this time, he's just more caring and grateful.
Personally, I call them both love, just in very different ways. The first is like a raging wave but the second is like deep still water. The guy who kisses his girl all over whenever he meets her may love her, but so does the quiet guy who just watches behind his girl and considers her in each and every of his decisions.

I think the love Kang Chul 1.0 had for YJ was new, exciting, idealistic and sentimental but the love KC 2.0 has for her runs deeper, is more real and realistic, and ready to take responsibility. The progression is not much different from love in real life, actually.
What makes the 2nd love more beautiful to me,even if it's more understated, is that it changed Chul: made him feel more human, made him commit to family, gave him something positive to fight for and, as Chul pointed out, it was a product of his own will.

Kang Chul 1.0 became curious about this emotion called "love" once he saw Yeon Joo under the influence because of him. He was charmed by her and willing to act out her version of a happy life up to a point. He chose the reset. I don't think he understood how painful it would be for her until he experienced his own forced separation with her death.
Kang Chul 2.0 has come to realize the depth and pain in the emotion.

I believe Chul 2.0 loves Yeonjoo as he stated. It just feels lacking because we dont get enough romances that we like.
In term of relationship between lovers, romance is process of interaction. Something that adds color, pleasure, joy, and excitement to the relationship. Whereas love is the emotion felt by heart, and it can manifest in various forms, such as care, responsibility, protectiveness, empathy, selflessness, etc.
What Chul 1.0 did was romance and what Chul 2.0 feels is love.

haha, I think the show doesn't give us more moment to feel it, they only secured 16 episode so I hope the special can give us more to the feel,
what makes me think he really loves YJ is that he never back down when he has those sacrificed and suicide tendency before, it rooted on his gene but not anymore if she is there,
and the line that "I choose her as my own family/she is the only family I choose" stuck to me as a confession.
logical maybe not too attractive is they are too much but I might be too positive to accept that the trait makes me appreciate it as his flaw,
this reminds of the other response I replied before about the character has sense that something going wrong and here he has sense that we will always have hope,

Hahaha, I don't think that's what he was saying. He loves Yeon Joo -- it's the fact THAT he loves her that's the proof he's human.
He's saying "Because I love Yeon Joo, and chose to have a future with her even though you my creator never programmed it in me to do so, I am acting against the programmed settings you made for me, and creating my own fate, thus validating my own free will. My love for her proves to me that I'm human."
Someone on tumblr wrote it's like he's taking "cogito ergo sum" and changing it. So instead of "I think, therefore I exist", he's saying "I love, therefore I exist."
So no, he definitely loves her.

Kang Chul doesn't seem like the kind of person that would speak in code. Frankly, he's super blunt and candid. That was the perfect moment for him to convey his feelings and he did, that's why I think logic trumps emotions. He wanted conviction and validation that he's human...and Yeon Joo is his living proof..that's why he values her. It might not be the emotional kind of love that's dreamy and sparkly tyat we all want, but at least he shows that vulnerability side which could lead him to understanding what love is afterall.

I don't think he was speaking in code at all.
I mean, taking this logically, which judging by his tears this episode I don't think Chul entirely is...
Yeon Joo by herself is not proof that he's human. Yeon Joo exists entirely independently of him, and she originates in the real world. Her love for him has no bearing on his existential understanding of himself. She could be in love with him and he could still be just a manwha character.
What makes him more than just a manwha character, what proves to HIM he's human, is HIS feelings for HER. It's the fact that he's fallen for her, independent of his writer's will, that proves to him his will is his own. It's the fact that he chose to live out his future with her as her husband, despite his writer planning a future for him with SoHee, that proves to him his future is his own. It's the fact that he has made memories with her, memories not drawn by his writer, that prove to him his past is his own.
She is intrinsic to these realizations, yes, but his feelings ABSOLUTELY must be involved, otherwise, it's not an existential recognition of one's own existence. Which is what "Since X, therefore I'm human" is: an existential realization.
Like GirlFriday says, it's the equivalent of Chul shooting Seung Moo in Episode 5, but much healthier. Chul shoots Seung Moo in an attempt to prove to himself he's human and not "just a manwha character". Loving Yeon Joo does the same.
This is a Song Jae Jung drama, the hero's not going to say he loves the heroine until the last possible moment. But that speech to Seung Moo was pretty darn close to an "I love her."

I actually think it's something in between.
On one hand, I don't believe that Chul chose her only for selfish reasons as prove of his existence. I think it was attraction mixed with a sense of responsibility. Kang Chul might not be super emotional guy but that does not mean he doesn't care.
As he himself said it 'I need time to chatch up. You are still the same so I'm sure I will soon see how your charm affects me.' If she moved Chul1.0, she also moves Chul2.0.
On the other hand, 'love' is like a flower that needs to grow.. and seriously they never had time for that - that's why I always complain about the missing time for romance development.
SO it might not be our 'standard drama love' yet, but I'm 100% sure he chose her because she is somehow special to him (waiting for feelings to return). And THAT choice is what made her become his family and a prove of his own will and existence.
If it were a 'fake' marriage without affection no-face wouldn't have shot her.. he said 'there was no point in killing her after Chul lost his memory'. They were technically still 'family', but her death would not have hurt Chul.

@Shiria: If only that long happy ending fantasy sequence (in the last episode before everything went south) was dedicated to actual romance development, right? I'm still salty about it not being real. I felt cheated of valuable plot time. (Unless, maybe, just maybe, there are some details in that sequence that we'll get to revisit in the last episodes?)
The closest sign to Chul feeling something irrational was his look after the No Comment kiss. I get that being crazy in love is only a phase, and it will calm down to a simmer as that love deepens, but I do believe there will always be a part of love that is irrational. Would be nice to see more of that.

This is exactly how I feel and to me its more beautiful than any of KC 1.0's sweet "homework". There is a sincerity and reliability (and stableness!) to KC 2.0 but 1.0 lacked. the fact is imo, that 1.0 was still broken and grieving in a way that 2.0 isnt. he had given up, and was using their romance as a salve for himself and a reward to YJ for helping him so much.
2.0 tho? He loves her in a different but more mature way. She's his /family/ not just his lover. They are equals and partners. and He's gonna protect her (and dad!) with all he's got. He's back to he was at the start, a guy with indomitable will and drive. But this time instead of it being for revenge for what he lost/and a search for context, its to protect people he loves. He WILL get his happy ending for him and YJ. Not just YJ, he's not martyring himself for her happiness but including himself in it, both because he knows that would be the best way to make her happy but also because he is now to determined to live and be happy /himself/. and That's why this confession (and that's what it was imo) was so important. He wasnt saying that she made him human, he's saying that he realized in the process of knowing and loving her that he IS human. just like you said "I love, therefore I am". He was always smart and capable but he was able to grow so much, and able to handle things that 1.0 wasnt. because love truly made him more mature, and he was able to look at it all from a bird's eye view when he read it thru the manhwa. Man its so great to me? and it really does reflect proper grown in a relationship. 2.0 is proper husband material, 1.0 while devoted and kind was NOT. and It's his love that also gives him the confidence to fight for a happy and just ending, no matter what. 1.0 was going through the motions, doing waht he thought YJ wanted but lbr his heart wasnt really in it. He did love YJ imo but he no longer cared about living or in fact anything else. and that is not a stable basis for any relationship. He was existing purely for her. but now KC has become a more whole person, and that's why he is able to love YJ better than before. it's not a matter of quantity of love but more like quality imo? and i like the idea that him valuing himself more and seeing things in a less bleak light, contributed to that. and it was YJ who contributed to THAT.
I do wonder tho, if it'll ever be revealed to KC that she's his true creator. maybe it doesnt really matter in the end.

here's my take on W overall,
it's not that the rule changing but more people have access to the rule and aware,
Instead of making the protagonist have trouble all the times because they do the wrong thing,
they make all the people involved gain more credibility and become the best of themselves,
but not all of them is running on the same page with Kang Chul, most often they want to kills him,
so in W everyone step by steps get their power and utilised it,

I didn't immediately watch this episode after downloading it. I had to strengthen my heart. I was afraid I couldn't bear to see Yeonjoo dies. I know it's impossible that she would really die now since there are two episodes left. But still, it's bothering me.
Even though this episode is full of sadness, I still really like it.
My hope for happy ending is growing very high as Chul says that it has to be happy ending no matter what. If he has sad ending, all his suffer would be meaningless and it makes this drama meaningless too. It doesn't matter to me where Yeonjoo and Chul will end up, her or his world, as long as they together.

But after I watch it, I feel nervous for KC and dad, feel sad for YJ.
When I watch other Korean dramas that currently on air I can't help but comparing that how come the revelation take ages before being told. In W, 2 or 3 big revelations happen in one episode. The only question I have is... Why is OSM showing the same disappearing symptoms as Kang Chul?
1. He's not a character in the manwha. Or is he now, considering he drew himself as the killer when they did the reset?
2. Could it be that New Face and OSM are somehow mentally linked? Let's state the obvious, he stole his face, his memories, his skills...so that it may be a possibility, right?
3. Is it safe to draw a conclusion that Yeon Joo might have to choose between saving her dad or saving Kang Chul?

Or OSM will make the ultimate "sacrifice" and save kang chul somehow or maybe they'll all be sucked into the manwha and live happily ever after since it seems like dad is becoming a manwha character like Yeon Joo. Maybe Soo Bong can become a manwha character as well seeing as he was mentioned in the drama. Other than Yeon Joo's mother I haven't seen anything that really ties yeon joo to the "real world" and it seems like she likes the manwha world
so maybe she could live there instead? It would be a nice change to see the female lead giving up her position instead of the male lead (not saying there aren't a lot of dramas where that happens)

I think I prefer the opposite - that the manwha world will merge back into the real world. This is from a straight up science concept from quantum mechanics - the idea that every time we make a pivotal decision, a new world springs up and carries out the decision we didn't make. It is also theorized that the worlds, parallel but progressing linearly in time, can meet up again and fuse if the right combination of decisions is made.
So I've been theorizing that somewhere in the distant past, in Yeon Joo's childhood, a pivotal decision was made that caused the manwha world to split off from the real world, but if she makes the right set of choices, the worlds will fuse back together.
I've not seen a lot of evidence to support this idea, however, except for Yeon Joo drawing Chul when she was a kid, and the fact the manwha world does seem a complete one, outside of the scope of one writer to invent. It acts independently of the writer at times, and its characters can gain self-awareness and free will/agency.
I have a question for PC users. I use a Mac. What was that paper in the back of the tablet when Kang Chul opened it up. It even had holes along side, like it was from a spiral notepad of sketchpad. I've opened up my Mac before. It has no such thing. So are Yeon Joo's original drawings in the back of that tablet? Just a conjecture.

BTW, I just googled images for the insides of graphics and artists' tablets. None of them have paper inside them ...
I suppose my suspicion is that those original drawings by Yeon Joo as a child hold the key to the portal between worlds. At some point, her father jimmied with his tablet, needed some paper to adjust some of the components, and used her KC sketches? KC wouldn't see them because they're covered up by the motherboard?
I also have a suspicion that YJ's mom plays a part in all this too. It all seems to have stemmed from the divorce.

I like the idea of the real world and the manwha world becoming one but, the confusion we would get from people in the real world would be pretty hard to deal with for example if crazy dog suddenly meets so hee or doo young on the street. Especially since W was a best selling manwha so pretty much everyone knows about it. I think I'd be pretty confused if I saw ASSemblyman Han was in my world and he believed he was who he was in the manwha. Or would the manwha and the real world collide creating a entirely different "world" so to speak where kang chul and everyone from the manwha were real people? Honestly I'm just hoping for a happy ending kang chul has had to many heartbreaks to have another.....

Well the way it works, I vaguely remember, is that this theory of "many worlds" can never be proven because there can never be an "observor" to prove it. When the worlds split initially, no one would see it, know it or remember it from either world. That's where Yeon Joo comes in, because she does the impossible: she's an observor. As a child she imagines or remembers someone - Kang Chul - that doesn't exist or no longer exists in her world but does in the other world. The pivotal event was perhaps therefore his death in this world, but he lives on in the other one.
Because the world splits on the question of whether he lives or dies, he actually becomes the pivotal character of the new parallel world.
Because Yeon Joo can see him - can pierce the fourth wall/dimension, whatever, from outside his world, like a god - she also has the power to introduce new variables into his world (which, remember, originated with Kang Chul and is thus dependent on him), and sculpt events around him, an ability she passes on to her father when he too unknowingly pierces that fourth wall. How? Through the tablet. That's why I ask what the paper is in the tablet - it's like Yeon Joo captured his soul when she drew him when she was a child, and thus the tablet becomes a portal to him and him to her.
If the worlds fused back together again, there once again should be no observor. No one would see it, experience it or remember it. The hospital, for instance, would suddenly have unfamiliar doctors in the emergency room, but nobody would realize they were unfamiliar, because it's an actual merge of the two hospitals and their personnel and they would exist as if they had always been there.
Anway this is just a big hypothesis that I don't actually think will be borne out - we would have had more obvious hints in the episodes towards it. On the other hand, there so far doesn't seem to be a solid theory in-story about what the hell is happening, so this is as good as any, and at least based on the kind of whacky but real science that science fiction writers use.

@Barbrey I couldn't reply directly to you for some reason but your theory makes sense and seems quite possible actually since Kang Chul is from the real world (kind of) Yeon Joo drew him on a piece of paper for his "beginning" not on a tablet. I didn't see the piece of paper everybody's talking about which episode was that in.? Also no face is really dead for sure this time right.? No more creepy appearances.?

September 8, 2016 at 4:42 PM
@Bogummy's Wife
The paper I'm talking about is in the back of the tablet when KC opens it up somewhere between eps 10-12 (can't remember exactly). There are at least two large squares of it with perforated edges that seem to be wrapped under the motherboard with flaps extending. I don't know if they were always there or if KC put them there to block the portal. Assuming the former, why are they there? Tablets just don't have these squares of paper in them. Assuming the latter, KC likely used YJ's old sketchbook paper because he held up the sketchbook in that scene. Whichever the case, YJ's drawings seem to be connected to the tablet physically, though I can't know for sure.
Don't know about Dad and no-Face. The "many worlds" theory is based on particle behaviour, though. I don't think no-Face or any other character Dad created can completely disappear while he himself is alive because that defies the laws of entropy. The particles of the villain -which originate with dad - will manifest themselves in some form or another somewhere else because they are still a part of him. YJ's challenge in that case would not be to destroy the villain but to reform him. Change the variables, give him a history and a face not her father's and some life-changing event that turns him into a kitten not a tiger.

@Babrey oh ok thank you maybe I'll go back and look for it after I prepare myself to be heartbroken. I'm just really worried that dad is going to turn into the actual no-face killer for real not the soulless body he was before. It might be a struggle between dads good side and bad side I just want a happy ending ?

1) I think it because OYJ is officially more as manhwa character now and Kang Chul family, to an extent, OSM also his family
the problem is, his face in the manhwa is not OSM, so if you bring OSM to the webtoon world, he'll be the Killer just like how OYJ is still OYJ because she owns that face there
2) the two world can't have the same face with different identity, the same KC can't live in real world without being named as kang chul and the same OYJ can't live inside the manhwa without having the same identity,
and since the killer stole dad's soul before with the same memory, it's like dual personality, the killer still live inside the dad if he came to the webtoon world and if he can't mentally stop, it possible to shut the killer forever
3) Yeah I think that;s wha they are going to make as the ultimate conclusion, dad or kangchul
Idk why I feel this creepy vibe if Kangchul named her son Kang So Man . . .. .aaah my imagination ruins me

1. He drew himself as a different character. That's creating someone with the same physical attributes but with an entirely different persona or identity. So technically, that really wasn't OSM to begin with. Therefore he shouldn't be affected by the rules of the manwha. UNLESS!! The premise I had in item #2 which makes him and new face the same person.

in my understanding, he didn't draw himself as a different character,
he gives his physical attributes to another character/the killer when he draw the killer's face,
there's always 2 people,
OSM and the killer but then OSM gives his own appearance to the killer which regards as one body in the webtoon world, it can have 2 soul, DID is a thing

@Yoyo
Given that Dad has all the killer's memories, I had the creepy feeling all episode long that he and the killer were somehow merged into one. That's why I was on edge all episode; I couldn't fully trust Dad. It's like the killer was/is Dad's dark side. Before this is all over, I suspect that Dad will have to choose whether his Dad-side or killer-side takes ultimate control.

Amen to this! I too thought the Killer and Dad were two sides of the same coin. Remember how the Killer knew so much about the future Dad was planning for the manwha? I think they're essentially the same soul.
mary
September 8, 2016 at 12:15 AM
I feel like Dad and No-face only merged when No-face pointed out to Dad that he wanted Chul dead too. That he stabbed Chul himself and he was also a murderer.
Before that, there's a brief period where Dad existed in real world with his face intact and No-face existed separately in manhwa with Dad's face.
Indigo
September 8, 2016 at 2:53 AM
I think there was a time when Dad and the killer were separate entities who shared similar intentions. You could say that the killer was a reflection of Dad's dark side. But I think they became one (with the killer being dominant) when the killer took Dad's face; essentially "ate/swallowed him up", to use the killer's words. As we saw, No-Face Dad was soul-less.
When the killer died I thought that would finally separate them but creepily, it doesn't seem so. That's why I'm worried. I think Dad will have to put down his liquor bottle, step up as a man and father, and overcome the killer with his (Dad's) own will.
rlg07
September 8, 2016 at 4:10 AM
I also think that dad has more to give. That he's still got to get rid of his (literal) demons for good if they're going to be free of the killer threat once and for all.
I was freaked out by dad starting to disappear, too. I think it's because of his entangled connection with Killer that makes him part of the manhwa now, too.

I've thought a lot about how OSM and the killer are connected, and I think it's because the killer has always been for all intents and purposes a direct manifestation of OSM as an author. He was OSM's right hand 'in universe' - whenever something needed to happen to move the plot along, he did it. He had no face and no characterization because he was the author moving his own story along. Like, if your brain tells your hand to do something, your hand does it without asking why.
Once he gained self awareness, he was still working from the same playbook as his creator. He had the same goal OSM had from the start, to propel the story to it's climax where he and the hero would meet and the story would end, for better or for worse, but rather than just dying (like OSM would have) he wants to live. OSM has his memories now that he's dead because it's like muscle memory. The killer was basically him/ his subconscious given free will.
That's how I saw it anyway.

Also! I think he's disappearing because anyone who has been in the comic world has become 'of' the comic so to speak. The killer was never a character apart from him, so he's feeling the effects of his obsolescence from the story, and since he already wrote himself in as the killer I don't think he can be saved by writing himself in as someone else.

I think he's disappearing because he's Kang Chul's father-in-law, haha. The moment YeonJoo married Kang Chul (is this even a fact in Kang Chul's revised world or not?!), anyone related to her who knows about the worlds colliding might just become part-manhwa character.
And dad as a manhwa character just isn't important to the story. At all.

OSM went into the manhwa first of everyone crossing over any which way. he was immortal then and used his time there to stab KC and strike a deal with the killer.
then he never went in again, but the killer started waltzing in and out and all over the place, ending up with dad's face and worst personality traits AND acting up as a creator - he had OSM do all kinds of alterations to the story to fit his purposes (eg. gun in KC's hand.)
so OSM is a character too, and since the killer is already dead, his purpose is now lost. he would be disappearing.
UNLESS... he crosses over for the last episode and ends up getting all the blame for new-face's killings. then he'd stay solid but probably forever in prison in the manhwa.
i still wonder where KC went - if he's in the manhwa, a lot of people now know he's not dead, so he might be arrested because of the red-handed, smoking-gun kill he was framed for. who else but OSM could take the blame so KC is cleared?...

Viewers guide to watching W:
1. Keep an open mind.
2. Be patient.
3. Overthinking is the norm.
4. Anything is possible.
5. Phone a friend when you think you're bordering crazy.
W Rules:
1. The creator has the ability to re-write the storyline, add or take out any characters, draw non-contextual events, force a narrative and play god.
2. Main characters, once awaken, may have the same creator abilities. So yes, they can do everything in line item #1.
3. There are 3 known portals used to crossover from either worlds, the tablet, the creators access and kang chul's summoning.
4. The chyron is connected to both the hero and heroine. Once they serve their purpose for a particular scene/episode, the chyron appears allowing them to go back to Yeon Joo's world.
5. The tablet seems to be the lifeforce for the characters of the manwha. Its the best technological breakthrough that saves lives, end lives, reset lives, etc..etc.. So the tablet is super important. Save the creator, save the tablet. That is W's golden rule.
*I might be wrong, so anyone can correct me and chime in!*

6. If you don't serve any purpose to the manwha, you simply disappear to oblivion.

and one last rule to rule them all...
all inanimate objects taking out of the manhwa, when not directly in contact to a main character, DISAPPEAR after a while (KC's gun, the bullet, etc.)
so far only the clothing and the wedding rings have persisted.
WHAT OF THE DRAWN TABLET?
and if the tablet goes... the road is closed.

Dramafan to the rescue!
Rule#1. We do not know yet why this particular webtoon is acting this way. For now, don't worry about it.
Rule #2 KC can summon people from inside the W world and real world. But, when he is W, he can summon from real world and when he is in real world, he can summon from W.
Rule #3 When he summons, people he summons need to be in the same physical space. W physical space is an exact replica of real world physical space. So, anyone who is summoned simply disappears and appears in the same space but different dimension.
Rule #4 When the webtoon feels that a character is not needed in W world, the character starts loosing physical appearance. 'Character not needed' is defined by who has the upper hand and if those who do have it, need the other characters to be part of the story.
Rule #5 KC is dreamy.
Rule #6 When KC was main character in W, whoever he thought was important for him existed. So, when YJ married him, she become a character. That is why, as a manhwa character, she can be resurrected by just drawing. This is the key plot point for W. So far you are part of W universe, you need not die - provided there is someone who can draw you. Now, only creators have the power. So, YJ has power over KC character's life and death and her father has power over everyone else. And the Webtoon (the master power) decides the rules.

dramafan100
September 7, 2016 at 9:57 PM
Rule #7 There are twists in the story based on variables. 'Variables' is defined by things that KC does not know yet or what the writer has not yet told us or what the writer dreamt about last night while she was found cackling like an evil witch. So, this is the most unpredictable part and kind of fun part.

Ooh yikes, W rules... hmmm...
The Rules of the Tablet
1) There are two worlds: the W world and YJ's world. Both worlds are real. Both worlds are connected by way of the manwha, which manifests through Seung Moo's Magic Tablet.
--> Because the Tablet has a god-like, Creator power over the W world, Seung Moo is able to create copies of characters and locations within the W world that also existed in his own world. The worlds only connect at those specific points where commonalities between both worlds exist (locations used for background art, for example).
2) The Tablet has no direct power over YJ's world (as far as we know). But since the manwha connects both worlds, it can follow the main character into YJ's world.
3) The Tablet has power over the W world, so much so that it can: bring a character back to life, create a flesh-and-blood person out of nothing (character creation), act outside the established logic of the world, force characters to act out-of-character, and basically exert a writer's control over a real world.
4) The Tablet seems to be intrinsically linked to the main character. When the main character notices the Fourth Wall -- when he thinks/fully believes "this world is not real" -- then the Tablet freezes the W world in retaliation to this rejection of its power. The main character's sudden awareness of the Tablet allows him to see the Tablet's screen (the literal Fourth Wall).
5) The Tablet's screen is a direct portal between the two worlds.
6) It seems that once the main character willingly re-enters the "fake" world, the W world unfreezes.
The Rules of Inter-World Travel
1) A main character in the W world can summon a person from YJ's world into the W world by thinking about them.
2) Once summoned, that person is trapped within the W world until the Tablet writes "To Be Continued", at which point the person is forcibly ejected from the W world and sent back to where they came from (YJ's world).
3) A "TBC" only appears when a main character fulfills a mission, or has an emotional change, that can finish an episode of the manwha.
4) A main W character in YJ's world can summon other W characters into YJ's world.
... Okay, I think that's it?

So glad Dad has his face back! I'm pretty sure me and Soo Bong were the happiest people in the world when Dad got his face back.
Also, Kang Chul's speech about Yeon-Joo was so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. It's so sad to hear Kang Chul talk about how his whole life has been manufactured until the time he decided to love Yeon Joo. This show is oddly philosophical and really makes you rethink how precious the ability to make your own choices and even the privilege to regret those choices is precious.
Hope he gets his happy ending, for his sake and mine!

Actually if you think about it, all of the characters of the W world have been acting on their own for a while now, because YJ's father wasn't writing/drawing anything. It seems that once KC started to write his own story, the character around him started reacting to his actions, and that already gave them a modicum of free-will from the beginning.
At this point it really looks like the only part of W that can be controlled is when a single scene or manipulation is inserted into the occurring events. The events themselves can't be controlled or changed, but edits can be done from the tablet on a chosen scene.

This episode was KC's episode, and I really liked his smarts and his strong will and determination to save YJ. I think that even though he might not remember his "dream" (previous moments with YJ), his subconscious does remember, and that is why this time around he is a lot less phased and lot more focused and determined. The lengths he went to, as he grasped at the chance to save YJ, and his little rooftop conversation with YJ's father, shows how much KC cares for YJ.
I won't post spoilers about the preview, [SPOILERS]. Hopefully KC will continue to kick ass in the last two episodes, he is so sexy when he is being smart and determined, and fighting for his life and the life of his beloved. Of course lovely YJ will also be there to give all the support that she can and help in any way she can.
Oh and poor Soo Bong got his 15 minutes to shine in this episode, and he rose from the ashes of his terror (as one poster worded it before) to seize that weird/freaky tablet!

I too hope for a happy ending, because a sad ending simply doesn't make sense to me.
This is how I see it, with a sad ending, this is the message "life sucks and then you die"; with a happy ending this is the message - and I wrote this before but I'll write it again - "as you write your own life story, never give up on that happy ending, after all happy endings are worth fight for".
So I personally am really hoping for a happy ending, to give meaning to all the pain and sorrow that have occurred.

Hmmm. Maybe I was the only one a little bit underwhelmed by this episode.
But like GF said, I kind of knew they couldn't kill YJ or KC because there are still 2 more episodes. And because they were struggling in their own battles separated from one another, I didn't quite get the emotional turmoil I should have been in. And it kind of loses its appeal when you can draw away all illness/injuries without logic via The Magic Tablet.
Not to mention that Dad probably didn't do a very good job with erasing the past in the manhwa- creativity and consistency isn't exactly his forte. Why am I worried he may have caused more harm while trying to do good? And please tell me he also saved KC's ass while he was drawing as well!
Hope next episode has more moments with KC and YJ together because what I really want is for them to overcome the odds and fight the baddies as a Team- they are cutest together and I need to be reminded of just how awesome and sweet they are to each other.

And I was slightly distracted because Dad has so much self pity that he fails to see that so many people love him- YJ, Soo Bong, his ex wife... And he is a hugely sucessful manhwa writer... But he STILL would rather wallow and try to kill himself. Unlike KC who had lost everyone (and just lost YJ too!) but yet he had to be the one to give Dad the Pep Talk. So I was less touched and instead wanting to Smack Dad big time!

I agree with you about YJ's father, he is one character that annoys me, because he never seems to make any right decisions or gain any strength from his experiences. Instead he always falls apart, and makes bad decisions (in addition to being a very bad writer), and it looks like he will go bat-shit crazy in tomorrow's episode *no spoilers from the previews*.

all the experiences he remembers are KC starting to act on his own before the whole world went amok - which he thought could mean he was losing his mind or drinking it off - and being a killer's puppet. and then getting the killer's memories.
let's add stabbing KC and shooting YJ (which he felt as his own act.)
he really has no positive experiences. no wonder if he should lose it. he went from exhausted and enraged against KC to exhausted and killing people left and right in his new-face alter-ego. downward spiral, if you ask me. i really don't think KC can save him, and come to think of it, i'm not sure i want him to try.

Continued (because I can't edit my above post), but I still really liked the rooftop scene, because it showed KC's feelings towards YJ, and how he considers her his family now (his real family). So by extension, he was willing to forgive SM for all his blunders, and put aside their differences to save YJ.

I think the magic tablet need to get destroyed in all kinds to make their life a happy ending, no more power to control anyone,
I think the tablet work less magic because we anticipated it, they don't have any other way to do it except really makes yeonjoo dead (which will make the viewer boycott)
but as plot progression, this actually gives more meat to han cheol hoo character progression,
gives another wrong turn because OYJ is attached so much in the webtoon, and make the stories more interesting (maybe for me) because if we saw this as individual race, anyone have the chance to win and kill others,
this feels like jumanji somehow, and W will work really good in anime ala psycho path

I agree, I want them to 'overcome the odds and fight the baddies as a Team'.
I understand the need for dramatic tension, plus, Yeon-joo had to die/ Kang Chul had to save her in a mirroring of all the times she saved him (and help him realise her importance to him) but, I say, enough of the moping and sadness. They are both 'main characters' in their own right, and I want them to work together to take down the bad guys and get their happy ending.
Otherwise, I'm going to start thinking that, as much as this writer is excellent at the big plot lines (I hope she knows where she's going), she's still hemmed in by the 'male lead saves the day, female lead assists/ reacts to him despite being an awesome character on her own' stereotype. Happened in QIHM, too.
To be fair, though, has there ever been a drama where both male and female leads worked together to resolve situations? Wasn't just the male lead making decisions?

Nope. Not the only one. I found this episode underwhelming too because we knew that YJ will most definitely be brought back to life. I agree about what you said about the Magic Tablet. I give it a pass though because its woven in the story. The Magic Table is indeed Magical. However, we've seen it done before when KC was brought back to life, so it was nothing exciting.

Right from the beginning, it has been implied that this will be a happy ending. So, there shall be one.
But, the fun for me is not about the final result but how they will get there.
All these episodes, including ep 13, have been all about establishing rules, how it works etc. etc. They had to show death, life, erasure and stuff because it had to come together to get that final happy ending.
I get excited in this drama not because of the expected result. I get excited because I have no idea how they will get it.
Yes, they will be fine when someone draws them. But, the fun is, how do we make it happen?
So, this episode, the fun was not about YJ being alive but everything that had to happen to get her there.
So....I love the excitement and thrill of the plot.

I also felt somewhat underwhelmed and I thought YJ wouldn't be dead yet (or forever).
This episode didn't feel as intense as before. But there were some nice moments like between Chul and Dad. I'm glad they were communicating and working together. For a moment, I thought Dad was gonna rage at Chul and blame him for dragging YJ into his world. Well, I hope that Dad has changed for the better now that he sees how much Chul cares about YJ.

I think as GF mentioned, the real enemy now is moreso fate and the rules that govern the two worlds and their existence. Whilst they're alive, what becomes of their existence and where do they belong, how will it all catch up to them, what will be W's final episode, what will happen to them after the manhwa ends?
I guess this episode is a lead up to that, and planted all the seed for those questions when KC had the conversation with Dad.

I think character development would have been done much better if it were somewhere between 20 or 24 episodes. There's so much crammed into the 16 episodes. It makes for a fast-paced drama which is good, but it happened at the expense of the characters. So many under-utilized side characters imo.

I am just going to be sitting in a corner, sucking my thumb, and whimpering - 'narrative consistency, narrative consistency' . . .
I would love a happy ending, as long as it's narratively consistent. I refuse to accept reincarnations (looking at you, Gu Family Book); I can deal with 'meeting each other for the 2nd time without any memories' although I wouldn't be entirely happy; I think I could even deal with a semi-sad ending in the vein of Lyra and Will as long as it's narratively consistent. Have I said I value narrative consistency? Yes, well.
This writer has thrown out so many threads, I really hope she can weave them all together into something that is solid.
Those rings better not be another portal. Just saying.

Me too! When the "Final Episode" chyron appeared all I could think was, "Oh crap! It's on now! Whoever is really controlling all of this (Tablet? Fate? Writernim?) is done playing with y'all. No infinite do-overs." So, for the next two episodes all I can say to the characters is, "Fighting!"
I'm curious to see if Fate or Will or some combo of both will prevail. And, writers, after investing so much brain power into the first half of this show I'm expecting a decent payoff, okay? I've lowered my expectations since Ep. 10 so, just give us a contextual ending, something believable. Please.

My brain is so exhausted, but I'm still appreciating the show. It does feel like the end is coming, and I do hope it'll be a happy ending. Then I will always wonder if KC and YJ would just freeze or live on forever behind the scenes...
I really loved some of the scenes today. The piggyback ride, SB's moments, the look on KC face during and after the torture (not that I liked the torture, though)... I wonder if Crazy Dog would ever realize that he came across KC's path...
What surprised me today was the cliffhanger: YJ is back to the manhwa world (why?) but SH isnt recognizing her (why?!). What happened ? Please no more turn of events, time reset, nor obstacles! My tired brain just wants some fluff now!

-she is resurrected in the mahwa world, she owes her miracles life there so I think she is more often be the real manhwa character
but SH isnt recognizing her (why?!).

YJ is probably back in the manhwa world because of KC. He mention that he needs to get to the hotel.. he probably figured that dad got the tablet and drew YJ being alive..
As for SH.. of course she don't recognize YJ because of the dream/deleted memories.. remember? When KC's memories got erased.. all of them in the manhwa world do not remember YJ.

KC was already back to YJ's world , when he decided to go to the hotel. I assume he meant to take a taxi and meet YJ at the hotel in the real world... Or perhaps he thought YJ was alive in the manhwa world and didn't return to the real world yet ?
Also, after erasing KC's memories with a dream in earlier episode, YJ came back into KC's life. He even took a picture of YJ (when she broke into SH's apartment) and sent it to her. Perhaps SH didn't know how YJ looked like. I'm not sure if she knew that KC ran away with YJ in his car, after he was believed to have killed his friend/father figure. I'm also wondering now, if SH knows that KC is alive...
In any case, we can only guess or speculate. Can't wait to see what's going on in the next episode!

Number one was Crazy Dog Vs Soo Bong smack down.
Tied for Second was Soo Bong flailing after seeing his name in the manhwa and him on the phone with YJ talking 100 words a second. Lol.
Third was Crazy Dog's monologue of self reproach.
Fourth was Soo Bong saving the day by bulldozering himself to grab the tablet!

<3 GF, yet another marvelous recap, love your comment as always!
This episode might not be as exciting per W standard for the reasons GF has cited, but it has driven home the central message of overcoming fate with one's strong will so well, that I can't help but love it! Chul's conversation with Dad moved me deeply, and served as a good reminder of why we all should always cherish our family even when we're angry at them- look how hard Chul has to fight to have one (now two) family members of his own!
This is another strength of W, I don't know if it's due to the actors or the production team as a whole, for some reason all of the bonding/relationships in the show feel very real, very genuine. Be it Dad and Yeon-joo, Su-bong and Yeon-joo, Mad Dog/Mom/Seok-bum with Yeon-joo, and now Dad and Su-bong with Chul. I just really really want a happy ending for these people!
And regardless of the variables in this show, one golden rule has remained perfectly intact for me thus far- that is Mad Dog will ALWAYS make me laugh, no matter what gloom and doom is happening at the same time.

Does anyone here know about the simulation theory? It states that we live inside a simulation, we are all basically npcs in a complex video game world due to the highly advanced technology that created us. This show blows my mind because it is kinda like that theory. What if the tablet was somehow a super smart AI that made this all happen? If this show had a twist like that at the end, it would explain everything. Forget the fantasy tag, it would be Sci-Fi. It would be crazy if the twist was that the "real" world shut down at the end and it turned out to be a simulation just like Kang Chul's world.

Oh so that's what it's called... someone described that theory in an old comment. Sounds cool.
But if it's true and someone gains awareness, does that mean they're just programmed to be aware? And if you're programmed to be aware, are you really aware since awareness requires that it's a conscious awakening on your part?

I just wanted to comment on JB's comments in the end.
There are some insights you get from reading others comments on a drama that you love and those insights enrich the experience because now those comments have added another viewpoint, another perspective that you had not considered.
I love every episode of W when I watch it the first time and then I tend to like it more when I watch it again after I get different perspectives.
Some dramas become better because of viewer perceptions.
JB's comments enrich this drama for me.

Thanks GF for the recap. I feel that while the "mind-blowing" of the episode wasn't there that I was still on the edge of my seat because of everyone's dire straits. I also can't bear to see Han Hyo Joo die in a drama, I'd be so sad. But besides that, I still like that the writer continues to use the context of the webtoon to organize the two worlds. The only thing odd is that Sohee didn't recognize Oh Yeon Joo, but maybe she was never that important in the second go round.
I'm also surprised how important Soo bong has become to the story. His character starts out as a sort of third wheel, a foil to explain things. But now he's far more important, and his importance grows and grows. I am just guessing but I suspect that he will have a big hand in the final outcome of the drama. Whereas the doctors that Yeon Joo works with are still side characters.
I've really loved that this drama is like a guide to lazy writers about what not to do. Quit depending on the Truck/car of doom as a plot device. Quit putting people into comas and have miraculous recoveries in the last episode. Don't use amnesia just because you want to start over. Don't create a bad guy that has no real motivations except to forward the plot. And finally, don't waste characters on comic relief when they can actually be useful to the plot!
