TOP considering lead role in Chinese drama
by chickachunga
Big Bang rapper TOP (Out of Control), aka Choi Seung-hyun, is up for a lead role in a new Chinese drama called I Think I Love Ni. If he confirms, TOP would play the male lead opposite popular Chinese actress Yuan Shanshan (The Nanny Man) in what would be his second Chinese project after starring in the Chinese-German thriller Out of Control.
I Think I Love Ni is the story of an ordinary girl who works as a secretary to the editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine and later becomes her boss’s bumbling pretend girlfriend for reasons not yet revealed. I’m getting The Devil Wears Prada and She was Pretty vibes.
Due to the Chinese government’s restrictions on Korean programming and activities, production for I Think I Love Ni was initially postponed. But it seems cameras will start rolling in Shanghai sometime in the near future. China’s opposition to South Korea’s THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) deployment is taking a toll on the Hallyu market in China, but perhaps a lighthearted TOP project can potentially thaw tensions? That’s the hope, at least.

My thoughts exactly. TOP has such a beautiful unique low voice that should be heard at all times! I am not sure of the appeal of getting foreign actors to be in your production if they are only going to get dubbed over. Like 80% of acting is the voice! I can barely stand dubbed anything. It is so weird watching mouths move and have something different come out. I understand the monetary incentive, but TOP, please say no.

Umbrella Man, just so you know, most of Chinese dramas are dubbed (if not all).
I think i'll skip this one! TOP's voice should not be dubbed over!!! :'( I've come used to watching Chinese dramas but I can't imagine watching this one, I love TOP's voice and I can't even imagine watching or listening to him with another person's voice!!

I wonder why they dub them over? Seems rather odd to me to dub an entire production. The boom operator must be sad to be out of a job hahaha. But, I assume the actual actors redub their lines, but having a different voice come out when you have foreign actors is just strange!! (But must make for great pronunciation) ?

I'm not saying that nobody dubs themselves, but if you watch enough Chinese shows that have been (poorly, usually) dubbed, you start to hear the same voices with different actors. Personally, I find it incredibly annoying. And creepifying for child actors. They always sound horrific.
Take it for what it's worth, but according to my Chinese-speaking friend, her theory as to why they dub is accents. China's a big country with many dialects, so they're dubbed with a standard accent. I do love that Chinese-language shows always have subtitles. Too bad I can't read Chinese...

The number one reason is accents. The second reason is to eliminate background noises. Especially in the case of Wu Xia dramas where they use big machines that make a lot of noises to make the characters fly. Majority of the time professional voice dubbers will dub as the actors and actresses involved in the drama would have moved onto another project, but occasionally the actors/actresses may make time in their busy schedule to come back and dub over their own lines. I think it's great when they do that. I've watched a lot of c-dramas and I'm very used to the dubbing so it doesn't really faze me. I also don't mind dubbing that don't match the mouth (in the case of foreigners). If you watch enough, you will get used to it. They usually do it very well. The words/dub voice may not match the mouth movements but when the voice finishes a sentence, at least the mouth stops moving. The timing is usually done well. I've seen bad dubbing in other languages where the mouth of the actor has stopped moving but the dub voice is still going! LOL.

I liked him since Tazza 2 which was also the first acting role I ever saw him in. I was waiting for the web drama he did with Juri Ueno but I have yet to watch it. To be sincere I hate that almost every Korean actor is going now to china. I like some of the chinese content but it is annoying when they are dubbed and also because of this it takes forever for actors to come back and act in Korea.

Yeah...but what else can they do when they aren't being offered dramas in Korea? I mean, look at actors like Park Hae Jin - excellent actor, not offered many lead roles in Korea, offered the lead in like 4 or 5 Chinese dramas. If all you are getting is bit parts in your own country...especially if you are being passed over for idols that can't act...
*shrug* I'd prefer the talent star in Korean dramas, but you gotta work, and if you aren't getting the good offers at home...

I think the web drama is on Dramafever? Can't remember where I watched it but it was alright, like an extended ad for the messenger app, but TOP singing made it all worthwhile...

I first saw TOP's acting skills in IRIS. Goodness, I could feel how strong Lee Byung Hun's punches were. His face were all bloody and stuff, I was so convinced that he was really hurting. I even tried wiping my TV screen, to see if I could get the blood off of his face. Lol.
I second that! I would also love to see him in a Korean drama. Oh~ Maybe he could have one after this...:D

TOP in a romantic drama? I'll take it in whatever language! He seems very insistent on not doing any rom-com dramas in the past but I guess he changed his mind?
Would love to see a confirmation soon!

Why does he steer clear from Kdrama and only do movie while he did mini drama for Naver-Line instead?

I didn't think of that either! Between his voice and his intense eyes...just do another kdrama! I'll keep watching Tazza and Secret Message. Haven't seen IRIS yet. Is he in it much? Oh and rewatch 19 and Commitment.

It's blasphemy to dub Top's voice. Really... that man has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Also, I think he's already accepted the role. He's not promoting with BB nowadays and he mentioned that he postponed his schedule just to attend a FM in Macau. I've always wanted to see him in a rom-com drama (Secret Message was too short!) so I will just have to bear with the dubbing if this gets confirmed soon.
