School 2017 in the works for summer broadcast on KBS

The School franchise is one that’s near and dear to my heart, so I’m excited to hear that KBS is bringing back a new installment of the high school drama series right on schedule. Following its revival with School 2013 and its follow-up with a mystery bent, Who Are You–School 2015, KBS has announced that the seventh season of the franchise, School 2017, is being planned for a summer broadcast. Since its inception in 1999, the series is known for its star-launching history as much as its earnest stories set in high school, so the real question is: Who will be the next Lee Jong-seok or Kim Woo-bin?
School began in 1999 and aired four consecutive standalone seasons (each with a new cast and new complete story) until 2002, and in retrospect the franchise is more famous for casting raw young talent who go on to stardom, beginning with Jang Hyuk, and including Bae Doo-na, Kim Rae-won, Ha Ji-won, and Jo In-sung, among others. The series came back in 2013 with the epic teenage bromance between Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin, successfully reviving its status as a star-making vehicle. I wouldn’t say the same of Kim So-hyun in Who Are You–School 2015 — she was already plenty famous before that — but Yook Sung-jae and Nam Joo-hyuk have since been cast in prominent supporting and leading roles.
The new season will be the first miniseries helmed by PD Park Jin-seok, whose credits include the short drama series Battle of the Book, drama specials Unfamiliar Fairytale and Illegal Parking, and assistant director credits on Chuno, Jeon Woo-chi, and Sword and Flower. The script will be penned by a winner of the open screenwriting competition at KBS.
The focus of School 2017 will return to “real stories about school,” like in its early days. School 2013 followed that model, focusing on friendships, growing pains, and the everyday struggles of teachers and students, by weaving in and out of many characters’ side stories. I preferred that to School 2015, which had an addictive mystery story and love triangle at its center, but didn’t really manage to capture the same realistic feel that I loved so much about School 2013. I’m glad to know that the franchise is going back to its roots, and can’t wait to meet the next class of dramaland’s stars.
School 2017 will begin casting auditions soon, and plans to air next summer on KBS.

I'm a sucker for female centric dramas. I hope that they'll put more focus on the female frendships as well! Not sure about the previous renditions, but I'm pretty sure a lot of "school stuff" happen between the girls too and they should put it in. My complain about School 2013 is that they obviously intended to have this element but scrapped it to milk everything they could out of the bromance. And honestly, I thought it got super boring because of that.

I would love to see Kwak Dong Yeon in this. He needs an epic bromance to rival School 2013. I'm trying to think of an up and comer who could give us a deliciously angst-y bromance. There's this one kid out there... think his name is Ji Soo. Maybe they could cast him and pair them up.

School 2013 was really one of the best shows I have seen. Hoping for 2017 to be along the same lines instead of showing anticlimactic mysteries and frustrated lovelines.

As much as people hate on school 2015, can't deny that it catapulted sungjae's career. Kim so hyun was already popular before the drama, but it established her as a leading actress. NJK got a lot of fans after the drama too.

As much as I love Jisoo, I've yet to feel that he's a GREAT actor. He's a good one, and unless the character in School 2017 is fresh, different from what he's done before, he should stay away from the drama.
In his latest drama, Scarlet Heart, Jisoo doesn't shine as much as Joohyuk does.

And truth has never been spoken better. I love 2015 but 2013 was more raw and earthy and stay true to its School title. If they managed to bring 2017 with similar vibes as 2013, I'm more than happy.

A screenwriting competition? Are they sure they don't want to stick to known good writers? I'm just reminded of the mess that happened with the open competition/audition of My Sassy Girl remake. I sure hope whoever wins will bring in another wonderful story to the franchise.
As for possible leads, I do like the idea of Kim Hyung because he is awesome. If PBG isn't already big, he could do it. He missed out going to school in R88. For female lead, I don't mind seeing any of the girls in AoY again.

Angry Mom was pretty good, and that came from one of these competitions, and I think one of the writers of Secret was the winner of a writing competition, too (Secret wasn't really my taste, but it was a popular drama nonetheless)

i wish we'll have something like reply/answer me series drama at school that tell the story more about teenagers like how the kids handle the first kiss, how they face moving from being kids into grown up or being big kids that still doesnt realise its time to stop playing around. i mean, not anyone have big issue. why not picking up an ordinary high school student story?

School 2015 was a solid drama in its own right, it just didn't belong with the rest of the series. I'm so glad they're going back to the 2013 format.
Definitely think that the girls (and their friendships) should take center-stage this time. I'm not denying that Kim Woobin and Lee Jongsuk were awesome and didn't deserve their big break, but I'll forever be bitter that the girls, the lovelines, and their friendships were shunted aside for Jungho's storyline. It just wasn't fair to Park Seyoung and Ryu Hyoyoung and honestly, I kinda blame the role downgrades to how the actresses careers kinda stalled. Park Seyoung got stuck with daily dramas and Ryu Hyoyoung with supporting roles... I think they would've gotten to primetime leading lady status immediately if School 2013 let them shine. So I hope School 2017 would be a lot kinder to their ladies!

I haven't watched Park Se Young in anything else, but she is honestly quite bad in School 2013.
The only male-female chemistry in S13 is Jang Na Ra and Lee Jong Suk, but I am quite glad that they don't go down to teacher/student route.

That's your opinion, and I'm entitled to a different one. I was intrigued by what could happen to Namsoon-Hakyung. Park Seyoung's Song Hakyung was meant to be a complicated character, but they chopped up her role to end up with a part that's insubstantial and superficial, do you not see how that could affect her performance?
It's rash to claim "no chemistry" when the boys and the girls of School 2013 hardly interacted.

Can we have college 2017 instead,enough of high school theme kdrama..... I'm a fan of age of youth and I think its high time we have college theme dramas like cheese in the trap and 20 again. I have seen so many high school theme kdrama eg sassy go go,all school,boys over flower,page turner,puberty medley,reply 1997,playful kiss,the heirs,high school love on etc..... I really want less high school kdrama and more college theme kdrama for 2017.

But the entire series revolve around high school students. I agree that there's a lack of college-themed shows, but it would make no sense making the next installment of a series where all six previous shows have been about high school take place at college. If there had only been a couple of shows in the series so far, it might be different, but this has been a well-loved series since the late 90s and changing the set-up would be off-putting now.
I can't recall a single high school drama from this year (well except from drama special Page Turner), nor any planned high school drama other than this one for this year or the next, so there'll probably be plenty of other dramas for you to choose from :)
They could make a completely different show/series based on college though, wouldn't mind that!

I like DO and Grandpa Fox's acting, but I wish School2017 can be used to highlight new talents. Idols get exposure through their albums too but actors can only get recognition through acting projects. We need to discover a new crop of actors (and actresses) otherwise there will be a void since the 87-88ers will be due for military service soon.

i like school 2013 more than 2015 it got some realistic touch w/c are refreashing and fun to watch and the bromance was so cute i must say it was pretty satisfying than the romance on 2015(it was disappointing)i wish this one also be like 2013.

You really got me there for a moment... I thought at first they were bringing back School 2013 to do more storyline with the same actors. I was about to cry tears of joy. Alas, I know that's not feasible but the heart wants what the heart wants! The bromance of 2013 was just so good. I would totally be up for a post-School 2013 look at these kids' lives. Would the bromance still be going strong? XD
Will wait to see who is cast for School 2017.

I really hope they will cast Kim Yoo Jung in school 2017 even though I think it will be hard as she has been casted in love in the moonlight.
Actually KYJ is really good, both she and KSY, so since KSY is already in School 2013 I don't think there is another actress at their age with there talent........
