Lee Shi-un joins My Sassy Girl as Joo-won’s pal
by girlfriday
Aw, our geeky fanboy Su-bongie is moving on to a new life, maybe with a new job that doesn’t involve heart attacks and faceless bosses. Funny character actor Lee Shi-un, who just wrapped a memorable stint as a manhwa artist on fantasy drama W–Two Worlds, is the latest to join the cast of My Sassy Girl, the youth sageuk romance starring Joo-won (Yong-pal) and Oh Yeon-seo (Come Back, Ajusshi).
The new SBS remake of the popular rom-com film takes the story to Joseon, where cold city scholar Joo-won will meet sassy, rebellious princess Oh Yeon-seo. After a whole big hullaballoo about casting a new face to be this generation’s new sassy girl, producers went back on their promise and replaced the rookie actresses who were cast in the lead roles with more established names; Kim Yoon-hye (Vampire Detective) was among the late additions to the cast, and other co-stars include Lee Jung-shin (Cinderella and the Four Knights), Shim Hyung-tak (Five Kids), and Jung Woong-in (Monster).
Lee Shi-un has been cast in a comedic role as the hero’s friend, which is pretty much his specialty now. Lee debuted in 2009’s Friend, Our Legend and didn’t really break out until Answer Me 1997, after which he honed his hilarious sidekick skills in Shark, Modern Farmer, Ho-gu’s Love, and Remember–Son’s War, among others. But it was W where he hit the sidekick jackpot, and turned his scaredy-cat doormat assistant character into a fan favorite. I still want the spinoff drama where Su-bong gets to go on his own wacky parallel-universe adventures. If My Sassy Girl doesn’t utilize all of the potential hilarity of a Joo-won/Lee Shi-un bromance geeksplosion, I will be sorely disappointed.
My Sassy Girl will air in 2017 on SBS.

Lol, he looks so funny in that picture, not least because it has been airbrushed the heck out of it.
Anyways, yay, Lee ShiUn! I love him playing the hilarious side kick. I wonder if we'll get a drama with him as the lead one day. Just imagine him all crazy and going Noona! And writing "this is the worst day ever" in his diary. SuBong could totally have a comic all dedicated to him.

Pffft, there's no airbrush in this, what are you talking about? Lee Si Un's skin just happens to naturally look like that of a Ken doll.

I really feel his breakout was as the sidekick Falling for Innocence. The whole scheme about "turning the cuff" from behind to make a hug opportunity had me rolling.

I've loved LSU in everything he's been in, I'm thrilled W seems to have finally given him more exposure on DB. I just hope one day we'll get news of him being confirmed as the lead!

Anyway, he has a great smile!

Yeah how could you?! He's ever the funny guy, too bad his talent was wasted in Remember where he was the punchbag of the villain.

Subong-ie!! I wish Lee Shi-un's role in W would turn into the role that elevates him to leading man status? Haha, if that's something the actor wants, anyway - maybe he likes his comedic side-kick niche?
They should make a drama about a comedic side-kick reluctantly elevated to leading man status due to some cosmic behind the scenes mishandling, starring Lee Shi-un.
Plot synopsis: Drunk heavenly being accidentally puts Truck of Doom in wrong place, puts Lead in coma... whoops! They beg comedic-side kick to take over the lead role (or you know, provide some filler content) while they try to fix things. A magic walkie-talkie/mirror/book/tablet/PPL is provided for side-kick and main lead to communicate while they are in different planes of existence.
It takes some time (and a some hilarious shenanigans) for Lee to get used to his new role, but once he gets into it, somehow he starts fixing all the drama that the original lead (his best bro) was in. You know, instead of best bro angsting about relationship/daddy issues alone in his car, ex-comedic side-kick just communicates what's going on, because he ain't got time for that dramatic nonsense.
The entire time, ex-comedic side kick just wishes his best bro would come out of the coma, because this lead thing is HARD.
In the end, due to ex-comedic side kick's intervention, annoying second lead girl gets sent swiftly away, original main lead girl is found to be nice but mostly just friend material. Ex-comedic side kick may have a budding romance, but the true focus is the ultimate bromance between ex-side kick and lead which is solidified by their supernatural adventure together and maybe a birth secret or two discovered while original lead is in the Other world (gasp, could they be actual brothers?!).
... sorry for that tangent.

Lee Shi-un is beyond unbearable. How he gets all these roles is a puzzle to me. He totally ruined the drama with Jung Il-Woo. Now he has set his mind to ruin what is probably Joo Won's last drama before enlistment. sigh...

If anyone would ruin this drama, it'd be the writer.

i wonder in what part that you deemed he ruined the drama?
aside from reply 1997, modern farmer and falling for innocence where he has his own small story, he barely get any bigger than comic relief character....
were you afraid that he would steal joo won thunder, arent you?LOL

If you are talking about High End Crush, am very surprised, coz I found the romance is so-so but the Jung Il-woo - Lee Shi-un bromance really makes it watchable...

Aw I like Lee Shi Un. He's great at being funny. He has played a lot of side characters, but I'm glad his role in W stood out more than his previous ones. ^^

He is so cute. I liked him the most in Falling For Innocence, High End Crush and W. His comic timing is excellent, and his chemistry with Jung Kyung Ho and Jung Il Woo is amazing. I'm ready for another Br-OTP.

Haha, you're right, I never realised it before, but he's like a male version of Gong Hyo Jin - he's adorkable, has perfect comedic timing, and he has the best chemistry with his BrOTPs!

Hooray, more casting for Lee Shi-un is always a good news, and well-deserved too. He is always a scene stealer for me; it's proven that he is gold in comedic roles, but I think he still got some unexplored depth. Bet he will make a good villain!
Hopefully the show won't tank...

Yay! So happy for our Su-bongie.. My wed-thursday feel so emtpy since W ended. Strangely, I miss Su-bong antics more than our hero KC. heh. Why is that.. I guess its because KC needs only YJ.. But we need Su-Bong ?

Lead actor who is cold and a chaebol meets bright girl and he falls in love. Since its joseon the actor will be a nobleman's son. Same old story. This is not even close to the original sassy girl. The lead is supposed to be a loser not cold. They are just using the title the story sounds soo different:/

You guys should watch Eunguk and the Ugly Duckling. It's a one episode drama and Lee Shi-Un is the main lead. Unlike his other works, I think the character he played there is more serious. That drama is basically the reason I'm falling for Lee Shi-Un haha.
