It’s all muscles and kittens for action drama The K2

He’ll always be Healer to me, but Ji Chang-wook looks like he’ll be just as action-driven for his latest drama, tvN’s upcoming The K2. In the show, he plays a former elite soldier who is employed as a bodyguard to the wife of a presidential candidate, who’s played by Song Yoon-ah (Assembly). Although in this still, he looks more interested in protecting kitties. (Look at that tiny little thing!)

Ji’s character is described as skilled in martial arts and armed with cool-headed judgment, and we’re told that he’s been abandoned by his country and fellow countrymen, though it’s not clear yet how. The leading lady is missing from the photos below of the drama’s official script reading, but that role will be played by idol star Yoon-ah (Prime Minster and I), who was cast after the reading took place. Her character is an isolated young woman who suffers from a childhood trauma that prevents her from being able to communicate with the world. Yet it’s through her that the hero will begin to feel newfound emotions.

Meanwhile, Jo Sung-ha (Neighborhood Hero, Hwajung) plays the presidential candidate and Song Yoon-ah’s husband, while Kim Gab-soo (Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho) will be his rival. Hm, why do I find it difficult to know who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy among them? Although, I suppose there’s also a fair shot that neither of them is a good guy.

Well, they’ve certainly got me intrigued. The plot information is pretty scant at this stage so I’m going a lot on faith here, and hoping that this drama will represent the better end of the spectrum of the producers’ talent—that is to say, more on the Chuno and Conspiracy in the Court end for PD Kwak Jung-hwan (and not so much Basketball), and more of the first half of Yong-pal for writer Jang Hyuk-rin, as opposed to the latter half. (He also wrote OCN’s thriller Reset.) More than that, though, I’m looking forward to seeing Ji Chang-wook back on TV, and hoping that he’ll live up to his unprecedented paycheck; it was recently reported that Ji Chang-wook has drawn the biggest-ever per-episode fee at tvN. Considering some of the big-name stars tvN has cast, that’s an impressive metric. Do us proud, Healer-ya!

The K2 will be tvN’s next Friday-Saturday show, airing after The Good Wife. It premieres on September 23.

Is it strange that like 80% of the actors cant even hug. They are holding the other person as if they are scared to contract an infection.

It's a cultural thing. You're not supposed to actually do the skinship with someone who's just a female co-worker. They'll for instance pose with an arm behind the back over the shoulder but actually hold their arms 3" away from contact. See also, Manner Hands.

I've been extremely fortunate to attend several of JCW's fan meetings, and to meet up before and after performances of "The Days." We also hung out for a bit when Wook visited Los Angeles in June 2015 for the launch party of one of his clothing sponsors. Hugs just kinda come with the territory... especially if one is easily recognizable as the only gaijin in the crowd. ?

Without wishing to discredit, I think there are stars heavier weight than him, maybe it's because he's popular somehow/now?

As one of his fan I'm quite surprised too.
But considering Ji Chang Wook is really popular in South Korea, China and the rest of the world, with versatile acting chops and already establish himself as proper leading man for Big 3 network, probably tvN feels it's right to give him that amount of money.

I read somewhere that this production team was trying to compete for him with some Chinese agencies that were offering other projects and in order to be competitive they inflated his paycheck for this drama. He must have a good negotiation team.

Anyway, I'm so happy to see him return and hoping for the best!

I like the concept of the drama but I dont like the female lead... like, Im seriously doubting her skills to play a charcter unable to communicate with the world... Anyways, JCW reall needs to justify that salar with tooooons of shirtless scenes! Im wondering if they paid that much to make him comeback from China and/or because this is like his last project before enlisting??

This drama is my most anticipated drama right now, i need some action and thrill after all these melos.

Also this is randomly off topic, but it makes me wonder if I'm the only one who feels this way - to me JCW (as an actor) feels like the bigger/taller version of Aaron Yan (Taiwanese actor). Just came from watching Just You and for some reason I felt like his looks kind of gives JCW vibes. They're also both singers too but their real life personality is so different haha
