W–Two Worlds: Episode 3
by girlfriday
It’s another fun episode of inter-dimensional hijinks, with even more embarrassment than last time. Apparently no one taught our heroine the concept of conflict escalation, because if every time you wanted to leave the manhwa world, you had to top the last exit you made… well, it leaves her with some pretty interesting (not to mention harebrained) options. And to think, it’s only the third episode! Oh, the possibilities.
EPISODE 3 RECAP
After being sucked into the world of her father’s manhwa a second time, Yeon-joo runs over to Dad’s workshop, only to discover that he’s packed up all his things and disappeared again. His assistant Su-bong tells her in this shell-shocked voice that Dad fired them all and left, so the rest of the staff has gone home.
Su-bong says that no matter how he looks at it, there’s something odd going on: He told Yeon-joo that Kang Chul was dying, but then Chul was alive, and then her dad fired them all. He points to his computer screen, showing a frame of Yeon-joo in the webtoon, and says that this means she’s… her, and she went in the manhwa, saved Kang Chul, and came back out.
Even as he’s saying all this, Su-bong doesn’t look convinced: “The thing that doesn’t make sense is, it doesn’t make sense that it appeared in a way that makes sense! But then the thing that doesn’t make sense started to make sense…” He looks back and forth between the screen and Yeon-joo, realizing that she’s wearing the exact same clothes.
Speaking slowly so as not to shatter his fragile mental state, Yeon-joo points out how much this dress costs, and asks Su-bong whether he thinks she’d spend her own money on clothes like this, and who else would blow that much money without batting an eye.
Su-bong tries his damnedest not to say Kang Chul’s name, like saying it out loud would confirm that he’s lost his mind. But in the end he whispers it, and Yeon-joo asks, “Now do you believe me?” He’s so shocked that his legs give out and he falls to the floor, and when she runs over to help him up, he screams and crawls away from her like he’s seen a ghost, ha.
Once he’s recovered, Su-bong chatters away like a geeky fanboy, asking how Yeon-joo goes inside the manhwa, and whether he can go too. She doesn’t know how she gets transported there, but she has learned a few things, like the fact that the manhwa world revolves around Kang Chul, and anything that doesn’t involve him directly gets skipped over.
She tells him that time passes differently too, because that’s also Chul-centric. Su-bong doesn’t see how that’s possible, but Yeon-joo reminds him that the serial manhwa has existed for seven years in their world, but in the story, it’s been fifteen years of Chul’s life.
Yeon-joo adds that returning to this world is also dependent on Chul, because something narratively significant has to happen to end an episode, which is why she “had to do that…” She trails off, and Su-bong gasps, “The kiss?! You really kissed Kang Chul?!”
She yells defensively that she had to come up with something to surprise him and end the episode, but Su-bong looks skeptical and says that’s just an excuse: “Everyone knows you’re a Kang Chul fan!” LOL. And then he follows it up with detailed questions about how the kiss felt. Maybe someday you’ll get to kiss him too.
Yeon-joo lies that she didn’t have time to feel anything, and insists that Kang Chul isn’t just a manhwa character—he’s a real person. Su-bong: “Is he cool?” She confirms it, of course, and I swear they both swoon simultaneously. He asks about Chul’s assistant So-hee too, though he seems most interested in the size of her chest. He wonders why he’s talking about these people as if they were real, but Yeon-joo says they ARE real.
Su-bong remembers now that Dad said he’d end the manhwa tonight, and guesses that he’s going to try to kill Kang Chul off again. Alarmed, Yeon-joo starts digging around in Dad’s office for clues, remembering what he’d said about killing Kang Chul on Hangang Bridge when he had the chance.
Su-bong says that storyline is from 2009, so she digs through Dad’s old notebooks and finds a note scrawled in one of them: “Yeon-joo has left. I am now alone…”
She flashes back to the day she moved out of this house to go live with Mom. Inside, Dad looked broken and weary, and spent all of his days drinking alone. He thought, “I am the only one left in this house. I have no family now.”
He was so depressed that he couldn’t see the point of continuing his work, and decided to kill his main character and end the manhwa then and there. He got to work and drew Kang Chul standing on that bridge, about to end it all, and drew him jumping into the river below with a big splash.
But when Dad woke up the next morning and went to his desk to go turn in the final issue to his publisher, he was stunned to see that his own drawings had changed. His eyes wide with shock, he stared at the image of Kang Chul hanging onto the bridge for dear life, and he’d thought, “He’s still alive! He was hanging on by one hand… all through the night…”
He wondered if he just imagined drawing Kang Chul’s death the night before in a drunken stupor, but he sat down at his desk again and thought, “But it feels like a divine revelation—to be strong again.” So he picked up his pen and decided to save Kang Chul.
As Yeon-joo closes the book (hur) on 2009, we see how in 2010, the manhwa took on a new life, as Kang Chul’s story sped up to young adulthood and the success of his venture company. He became rich enough to buy a broadcast station, in the hopes of catching his family’s killer.
With the help of Ajusshi (his father’s friend, the one who visited him in prison), Chul launched a criminal investigation TV show called W, short for “Who and Why,” intent on answering those questions about his family’s tragedy.
At the same time, Dad’s manhwa skyrocketed him to fame, and suddenly there were lines out the door to get his autograph, and he was a featured guest on the evening news. Dad was proud that he’d finally succeeded, and was sure that Mom was regretting leaving him now.
But the strange incidents continued—at times his drawings would change on him, as if Kang Chul didn’t like the direction of the story. Right before his eyes, a frame of Kang Chul driving angrily shifted, so that he was suddenly facing Dad and smiling as his speech bubble got rewritten to ask, “Where am I going?” AHH! That’s so freaky!
Dad wondered if it was the alcohol, or if he was going mad, and his paranoia grew day by day. Suddenly the close-up drawing of Kang Chul’s eyes hanging on the wall felt like they were watching his every move, and Dad thought, “He’s alive. That bastard is alive—I can feel it for certain. How? How is he alive?”
In the present, Yeon-joo reaches Dad’s notes in 2016, which are filled with research into violent car wrecks and other ways to die. On the last page is one last word: “Monster” and that copy of Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Son. We see that as Dad wrote the note on the back about devouring Kang Chul before he gets devoured instead, he’d traced everything back to that day that Kang Chul should’ve jumped off the bridge and drowned… except he didn’t.
Yeon-joo returns to the hospital in the morning with a splitting headache, and avoids crossing paths with her boss Professor Crazy Dog when she sees him scowling over the latest webtoon episode on his phone. But she’s plagued with the image of that kiss wherever she goes, because literally everybody in the friggin’ country is reading it on their phones that morning. Yeon-joo sighs to herself that it’s like a hidden camera scheme that the whole country is in on.
Su-bong calls to say that he still can’t believe it’s all true, and asks Yeon-joo how she went to Kang Chul’s world the second time if he didn’t pull her in like the first time. He argues that if there are rules about how she gets out of his world, there ought to be rules about how to get there. And the real mystery, he points out, is—why her?
On the other end, Yeon-joo’s headache gets worse and worse, and suddenly she faints and drops her phone. Su-bong calls out to her, but when we cut back to the bus stop, Yeon-joo is gone. A woman finds her purse and phone abandoned and tells Su-bong, who gapes and runs to the bus stop to collect Yeon-joo’s things.
In Kang Chul’s world, his assistant So-hee goes to clean up Chul’s mess at the clothing store, and finds out from the manager that Yeon-joo slapped Chul, kissed him, and then the pair went into the dressing room together for a loooong time. Ha. The manager says the thing Chul wanted to keep under wraps wasn’t that stuff though—it was the fact that Yeon-joo disappeared.
So-hee doesn’t understand, but neither does the store manager, since she claims that Yeon-joo went in the dressing room but never came out. So-hee wants to see the dressing room for herself, and when she opens the door, she finds Yeon-joo passed out on the floor.
As soon as she calls Chul to tell him, he whirls his car around to go back to the store. He stops them from calling emergency and scoops Yeon-joo up in his arms, deciding that he’ll take her straight to the hotel (where he lives), and doesn’t want hospitals involved. He tells So-hee to call the doctor over to his place, and flashes her a smile so she’ll do as he asks. Well that’s just infuriatingly cute. So-hee is understandably flabbergasted.
As Chul gets Yeon-joo into his car, she opens her eyes for a brief moment and wonders why she’s back here. He wonders the same thing, and she murmurs that she doesn’t know.
Chul carries her inside to his penthouse suite, where a detective is waiting to talk to him about that strange suspect Oh Yeon-joo. Chul tries not to look suspicious holding Yeon-joo so that her face is hidden from the detective, and says it’s not a big deal if they can’t find her. The detective insists that they will, and pauses to look back at Chul as he carries the mystery woman into his room.
Bodyguard Do-yoon follows him in as Chul tucks her into bed, and then just sticks his hand up in the air. Do-yoon stares at Chul’s hand for a long beat before deciding to slap it in a high-five. Pfft, that was what you wanted?
Chul says that the key to his life is finally in his hands, and then tilts his head to look at her closely. Chul: “Is this woman pretty? Is this pretty? Why does everyone say she’s pretty?” Do-yoon is puzzled by his question.
It’s nighttime when Yeon-joo peels her eyes open, and Chul sits down next to her and says the dizziness is from the medicine the doctor gave her. He says it’s not a serious illness and checks her forehead again.
She asks drowsily where they are, and when he says it’s his place, she asks if it’s the penthouse on the 33rd floor. He’s surprised again that she knows so much about him, and she says she knows lots, like the fact that his family died suddenly, and he goes from hotel to hotel without a home ever since.
He prods her to tell him what else she knows, and she murmurs that he sleeps with a gun under his pillow every night even though it’s illegal, but he can’t sleep without it. That’s definitely not something many people know, and Chul’s expression darkens as he asks how she knows that.
Yeon-joo: “Because I saw it.” Dude, what kind of drugs did you feed her? Was there truth potion involved? She says that the scene that made her saddest was the one on Hangang Bridge: “I cried with you then, thinking that Kang Chul might really kill himself.” She starts to cry in her sleepy haze as she says this, and he’s struck by how much she seems to really know about him.
We see Chul’s body sinking in the river on the day that he was supposed to die, except this time he opens his eyes underwater. It’s a dream, and Chul is startled awake with a jolt. Hm, is he starting to remember the manhwa as Dad originally drew it?
Chul is clutching his gun in his hand when he wakes up, and he looks over at Yeon-joo, who’s still fast asleep. He gets up to walk around, but as soon as the bedroom doors open, he comes face to face with the black-hooded assassin, raising a gun right in Chul’s face.
Everything slows down for a split-second, and Chul is able to swing his body around defensively and push the killer away from Yeon-joo. When his bedroom doors safely close, he whirls around and kicks the gun out of the killer’s hand, and a fistfight ensues.
Kang Chul is fast, but the killer seems stronger and manages to get him in a chokehold. Chul tries to get a look at the killer’s face, but he’s hooded front AND back, like some scary faceless ninja.
For whatever reason, the killer sees an opportunity to flee and knocks Chul off his feet before dashing to the elevator. Determined not to let him get away, Chul scrambles up and runs to catch the elevator doors before they close.
He manages to get his hands squeezed in there before they shut, and he pries the doors open with a triumphant, almost evil smile… only to find the elevator empty. What the?
And in Dad’s motel room, he finally cracks and throws his computer on the floor—the drawing on the screen is of the assassin pointing his gun at Chul—and Dad starts attacking it with anything he can get his hands on, like a madman. He thwacks the screen over and over with a fire extinguisher, until the glass shatters.
Terrified, Dad crawls away from it and just runs out of the room, leaving all his drawing equipment behind. Oh, that seems like a bad idea…
Chul’s guards run back up in the aftermath of the attack and sheepishly report that they got a call from Do-yoon’s number to meet him downstairs, but the call wasn’t from him at all. Chul picks up the killer’s gun and slumps back down in his chair next to Yeon-joo, who has slept peacefully through all of this.
He looks up at the ceiling with a defiant glare—at whomever is up there trying to kill him—and thinks, “I will come find you soon. Wait for me.”
In the morning, Yeon-joo wakes up confused about how she ended up in Kang Chul’s bedroom, and jumps when Do-yoon comes in to tell her that she collapsed from overworking. She considers the two-month time-jump that she was technically awake for, and guesses that it could be the cause of exhaustion.
Do-yoon tells her that Chul will be back to have lunch with her, and that there’s a change of clothes in the bathroom. She takes a tour of the expansive bathroom in her robe, and her eyes bug out to see two pairs of lacy, barely-there underthings laid out for her. She picks up the black bra like it might burst into flames, and then remembers Su-bong’s warning about being summoned here against her will.
She runs back out to the bedroom and digs around for Chul’s gun, and finds it under his pillow, just like she’d said. Chul arrives at the elevator and doesn’t like that Do-yoon left Yeon-joo in there alone, though Do-yoon thinks it’s unreasonable to keep tabs on her while she’s showering.
Meanwhile, Yeon-joo is in the bathroom having a decision crisis: She holds a gun in one hand and the black see-through bra in the other hand, looking back and forth between them trying to figure out which is the lesser of two evils.
She wonders what on earth she’s supposed to do, and then when she hears Chul and Do-yoon open the door and walk into the bathroom, she shuts her eyes, whirls around, and opens her bathrobe to flash them. HAHAHAHAHA. I guess lingerie won out.
Both boys freeze in their tracks, though Kang Chul is characteristically cool as a goddamn cucumber. Do-yoon, on the other hand, looks like his eyeballs might pop out of his head. He backs out of the room slowly, though not before looking her up and down. He whirls So-hee around when she arrives a second later, stammering that Chul and Yeon-joo need some alone-time to talk.
Yeon-joo finally pops one of her eyes open, and is mortified to see Chul just smiling back at her like she’s amusing but crazy. He points out that she’s at it again, and wonders what she wants to do with him this time. She cringes and closes her robe with a “never mind,” and before he can finish asking her why, she pulls a gun on him.
Chul’s hands go up immediately, but rather than fear, he displays curiosity as he tries to puzzle together the woman who appears and disappears without warning, slaps him, kisses him, flashes him, then pulls a gun on him. She says it wouldn’t make sense to her either, but she has her reasons.
She warns him to stay back, but he just keeps walking closer, challenging her to go ahead and shoot. She ends up warning him to be careful because it’s dangerous, and he’s amused that she’s worrying about him while holding him up. When he gets right in her face, she points the gun up to the ceiling and pulls the trigger, but it just clicks and nothing happens.
Chul smiles and takes the gun out of her hands, and says he wouldn’t leave it loaded when she obviously knew he kept his gun there. He casually takes the bullets out of his pocket and loads the chamber, and then whirls around to point the loaded gun at her.
Yeon-joo asks why he’s doing this, and Chul says he’d rather talk without the guns. He has a hundred questions for her, but says he’ll ask just one: How did she disappear the other day? He threatens to turn her over to the cops if she doesn’t answer, and she pouts that he once called her his savior. He says that’s true, but she’s the one who broke her word and disappeared without giving him any answers, when he waited two months for her. He asks it another way: Why did she slap him and kiss him?
Yeon-joo can see that he’s not going to let this go, and finally says that she had to kiss him to disappear. That’s not really the answer he was expecting, and he reconfirms that kissing him was the way she disappeared. She nods, so then he gets up and walks over to her with a determined look on his face, and plants a kiss on her. Kyaaa!
This time it’s Yeon-joo’s turn to look like a wide-eyed statue, and Chul pulls back slowly and looks at her with this skeptical expression and asks why nothing happened. It takes a couple of tries for Yeon-joo to find her voice, and she sputters that it’s not the kissing in and of itself that made her vanish, but the change in emotion due to the kissing.
He argues that he didn’t particularly enjoy their previous kiss, and she points out that it did surprise him though, and an emotional shift is the rule. He says she looks plenty surprised now and her face is all red, and she clutches her cheeks in embarrassment and shouts that HE has to feel the change, not her. He asks why, since that rule makes no sense to him, and she screams, “Because you’re the lead character!” Uh-oh.
He obviously has questions about that, but she clams up, realizing her slip. Yeon-joo says she’s going to report him because kissing at gunpoint has got to be sexual harassment of some sort, and he argues that she sexually harassed him first, complete with assault. He points to the cheek she slapped, for emphasis.
Besides, he argues, he did it for science (LOL. He kissed her FOR SCIENCE!) to prove a hypothesis. He realizes now the pattern among her seemingly crazy antics, like slapping him or taking off her clothes, all in an effort to shock him. He admits that he was expecting an answer like superpowers or teleporting, but not this.
She swears that she’s not lying, but he says even if it’s not a lie, that doesn’t make it true. He says that she’s telling him about the phenomenon but none of the context that explains it, and pulls the gun on her yet again. He warns her to explain the real reason that she disappears when his emotions change, and starts counting.
Yeon-joo thinks it’s an empty threat, but he fires a shot at a vase to convince her that he’s serious. At the noise, Do-yoon and So-hee run inside, and So-hee tells Chul to stop when she sees how scared Yeon-joo is. They see that Chul isn’t going to budge though, and quietly back out of the room.
Chul says that Yeon-joo might’ve saved his life, but she’s also a danger to him. Yeon-joo is near tears, but she refuses to answer and says that he wouldn’t shoot her—she knows he’s not the kind of person to do that. But he says coolly that she doesn’t know everything about him, and pulls the trigger…
He shoots her in the shoulder, and the bullet goes clean through and lands in the mirror behind her, shattering the glass. He shot her!
She’s so stunned that she can’t speak, but she doesn’t fall down either. Trembling, Yeon-joo reaches to touch her shoulder, and is even more shocked to see her hand clean—there’s no blood. Chul watches her with keen interest, and notes that she didn’t know her own powers. Her powers? And you did?
Yeon-joo faints from the shock, and Chul runs to catch her in his arms before she falls. He has Do-yoon carry her back to bed, and So-hee’s jaw drops when Chul just casually says that he meant to frighten her a little and shot wrong. So-hee legitimately thinks he’s gone crazy, and Chul just scratches his head with the barrel of his gun, pretty much confirming her fears. When they walk out, he goes over to confirm that the shot he fired landed in the mirror.
So-hee is convinced that something weird is going on, and Do-yoon says that Chul is definitely weird, but so is Yeon-joo. So-hee storms into Chul’s room and asks if he kept Yeon-joo from the police to go all gangster on her, and says that turning her in is the right thing to do. Chul pulls the phone out of So-hee’s hands and says no cops, because Yeon-joo is the key to his life, and he needs answers.
Yeon-joo wakes up and gets a clean bill of health from the nurse, when Chul comes in and pleasantly asks if she’s mad. Mad?! Like you took the last Pop Tart or something? She says that “mad” isn’t the right expression after you’ve shot a person with a gun, but he just smiles and says he knew she wouldn’t die anyway: “Why don’t you know that? You’re invincible, aren’t you?”
He says that she’ll never die, and asks again if she really didn’t know that about herself. She asks how he knows, and he wants an answer to his question first before telling her. He says that they should just openly acknowledge that Yeon-joo is not a normal human being, and he guesses that she comes from a different world. He even puts forth the idea that she lives in a different dimension, where she’s a surgical resident at a hospital. He takes out her hospital ID tag as proof.
He asks the all-important question: “Where?” But she doesn’t answer. Chul says that’s fine, since he’s got nothing but time. Now that he knows she can’t leave on her own, he can keep her here as long as he wants, until she gives him some answers. He tells her to stay here with him and promises to protect her from the police and the media.
He figures that she probably has lots of answers that’ll shock him, and encourages her to tell him the truth so that she can shock him and get herself back home. He asks what kind of world she lives in, and where she saw the things she knows about him, but again she can’t answer.
Chul says he’s leaving for a business trip but will be back in a few days. Then he holds out his hand for a shake, with an apology for what he did earlier. She shakes his hand weakly with a sigh, but he holds on firmly until she looks at him and tells her, “I’m sincerely sorry.”
He gets up to leave with Do-yoon, when suddenly Yeon-joo bolts up in bed and says, “I love you!” Pwahaha. This would be so easy if Do-yoon were the mark. He looks shocked, while Chul is completely unruffled. Yeon-joo waits and looks around for “To be continued” to appear… but it doesn’t and she rolls back over in bed.
That just reminds Chul of her flashing him earlier, and he asks if she thought his heart would race if he saw her naked or something. Embarrassed, she says she thought it might work, and he chuckles, calling her bewildering. She readily agrees that she is, heh.
On their way out, Do-yoon points out that despite calling Yeon-joo not pretty, Chul seems to be doing everything with her that a lover would—from surprise nakedness, to kisses, to declarations of love, a lover’s quarrel ending with a slap, and now living together. Chul doesn’t argue, and tells Do-yoon to think of it however he wants.
They’re about to head down in the elevator when Yeon-joo runs up to ask where Chul is going, and he says Busan, then New York. He asks if he’s going to die on the way, and she says she doesn’t know those things when she’s here, and that means she can’t help him.
He asks if she can know those things when she’s not here, and she confirms it, which only makes him more curious about her. All she tells him is that she’s someone who wants him to have a happy ending, and adds with a big smile: “I’m your fan.”
He takes that to mean that if she were to answer truthfully, it would make him unhappy, and she says yes, that’s probably the case. She adds that he’s the first patient she saved on her own, and also the second patient, and says sincerely, “So always be careful.” He has no sly comeback for that, and agrees to be cautious.
He asks how old she is and learns that they’re both the same age—thirty—and then asks if she’s married. She says no, and he replies, “That’s good,” before getting on the elevator. He winks at her as the doors close.
As Yeon-joo stands there watching him go, she reaches a hand up to her beating heart and narrates, “I found out later, the reason I was the only one who kept getting summoned here—it was because this man said I was the key to his life. At that point, the heroine of this manhwa had already changed… from Yoon So-hee… to Oh Yeon-joo.”
COMMENTS
Awwww yeah. Of course you’re the heroine! There are far too many hijinks per episode for you not to be the main love interest. I’m still cracking up at Gun vs. Black Lace, and can’t believe Yeon-joo escalated from kissing to nekkidness so quickly. Really, where do you expect to go from here? Maybe now that he knows the rule, she has to use something other than surprise or shock, and it’ll require a different type of emotional reaction, like earnestly moving his heart. I just love this conceit because there’s so much potential for moments both comical and touching, to hinge on her exit strategy.
Kang Chul’s reactions to Yeon-joo are so the opposite of what she wants at every turn that now it’s her wah-waaaah reaction after the fact that I look forward to. Every time she has to mutter, “Never mind!” and slink away and hide her face puts me on her side just a little more. I mean, really, what kind of man is so calm and collected at see-through lingerie? She’s pulling out the big guns here!
I still can’t believe he shot her though. I’m not entirely convinced Kang Chul knew of Yeon-joo’s invincibility either—he turned out to be right about it, but was it just a hunch that he wanted to confirm? Or does he really know for certain that she can’t be killed in this world? He does seem to have a cold-blooded streak that Yeon-joo doesn’t know about, and it wouldn’t shock me if he shot her with fifty-fifty odds that she might live or die. It’s funny that he’s a fictional character who’s treating her more like an object—his key—while she’s the one treating a manhwa hero like he’s a real person. If there’s one thing that we’ve learned from Dad’s experience with Kang Chul, it’s that his will to live is so strong that it changed reality in a different dimension; I wouldn’t put it past him to just pull the trigger to find out how it affects his life. The other possibility is just as intriguing—does he know secrets about her too? How would he possibly know she’s invincible? This isn’t the kind of manhwa world where people have superpowers, so why is he so quick to jump to that conclusion?
The flashback into Dad’s past with Kang Chul was the story we’d come to expect based on the things we learned in the first two episodes, but I could see how seven years of this could slowly drive a person mad. When the images change overnight, it’s a shock but not as frightening, but when Kang Chul is rewriting the image and words right in front of Dad’s eyes, the effect is actually really creepy. If it’s not just a recent development that Kang Chul has been rewriting his story, it makes sense that Dad has grown weary and desperate to end the series, which at this point writes itself, literally. I loved that in the scenes from Dad’s point of view, I was made to feel his paranoia and fear, like Kang Chul was the scary one in this, and Dad was trapped. It poses a really fascinating dilemma between creator and creation, and now I can see why Dad feared that he’d be devoured by his own creation. Kang Chul has become more powerful than Dad, despite not knowing it. I mean, how is he having memories of events that were rewritten?? Will finding out the truth about his identity only solidify his resolve, or will it break him?
I like that amidst all the craziness, Yeon-joo and Kang Chul shared a small moment of genuine connection when she worried for his safety and he saw that she was earnest about that, at least. I’m all for Yeon-joo spending some time being roomies with Kang Chul in his world, though it does introduce an element of danger when she can’t anticipate how to save him. But with Dad on the run and out of his mind (and no longer in control), she might be making the biggest difference by staying in the manhwa world by Kang Chul’s side and changing his character for the better. Especially if she’s indestructible here. That’s pretty cool, and I’d say that it more than makes up for one incredibly embarrassing attempt to raise a guy’s pulse. Damn Olympian pulse-control.

When we read the spoilers for this show back when it was first in talks, who'd have thought that when Lee Jong Suk would be "kidnapping" the writers daughter she'd actually be sharing his penthouse suite WITH him with all access to brandname clothing and all the lacy underwear a girl could want. Oh and free kisses from her favorite manhwa character come to life ?

Me too. Love it to bits.
It's interesting to note that when YJ was first sucked into the webtoon, her father's reaction puzzled me. Given that he knows that the webtoon has a life of its own, it wasn't the reaction I was expecting when he found her daughter in it and even during their confrontation. He didn't even ask how and why YJ was able to go inside the "manhworld" like how his assistant was curious when he realized that YJ was really able to go inside that world. So I conclude that YJs father already have an existing knowledge on how and why someone can go and exit from that world. He probably knows or have an idea how crossing the two worlds is possible. Remember his reaction when he just said that YJ shouldn't have interfered with his plans on killing KC, no reference at all about how she's inside his created world when in fact it more weird to have someone enter that world and interact within it than seeing it on his computer.
Also, I can't shake the thought about KC statement about how YJ is the key to his life that maybe YJ is his original creator. I mean, she's the one who conceptualize him first and all and only his father adapted his character in a manhwa, given that it already said that YJ can draw too(conversation between her aunt and mom about sending her to med school instead of pursuing art).
Ahhhh... so many possibilities. I am truly enjoying this show.

Yes!! I also think that YJ might be his "real" creator or something similar. Not only KC's intuition that she is the key to his life, but it is also puzzling how he insists about not understanding why she is considered beautiful. Sounds like sort of a blind spot...
After today's episode, my bets are on YJ being the driving force for the webtoon so KC finds a happy ending. And also the possibility of a split personality of the father crossed my mind...I love how the show is raising so many questions and keeps us guessing. I'm enjoying it so much, and loving Lee Jong Suk as always, he is so charismatic :D

Me too T_T I also love everything about this drama. I've been watching eps 3 twice wkwk
I wanna give a big thanks for the Viki team. It's hella good that W eps 3 eng-subbed already available as soon as I woke up in the dawn. Then I go to twitter to check the ratings... hurrah!~ W is first place in the time-slot with 12.9% .
Anyway I’m still curious the writer's reason for Kang Chul's power. And... why it must be Oh Yeon-joo?
She said, "I found out later why I'm the only person who is summoned here. It was because this man said that I am the key to his life. At that point, the main heroine of this comic changed from Yoon So-hee to Oh Yeon-joo."
... but didn't he said it after she already saved his life? Or maybe he's already said it even before Yeon-joo first appearance in the comic world since Kang Chul seems aware that there is another world exists. I still want to know the writer’s exact rule from Oh Yeon-joo “trip” to the comic world. Like in Queen Inhyun’s Man, it was because of the talisman that Kim Boong-do had.
So far Kang Chul and Oh Yeon-joo still don’t have feelings for each other, but what in the world... their chemistry is already no joke! I can’t imagine how their chemistry would be when they are in love later T_T I love seeing them together so much that I want to request Seo-ri to make a potion so that Kang Chul could be real, could live in Oh Yeon-joo’s world :’
There are many mystery left in the drama. Who? Why?
Seriously I love this drama so much. There are no annoying and bad actings for me. Bless 2016 for giving me mindblowing Signal and W ?
-out of topic - Jung Joonyoung is a lucky fanboy indeed. Hahaha he already have fun with her in 2D1N, and now he even sings for Han Hyo-joo’s drama OST. His voice is another blessings for this drama. I think I’m gonna rewatch Han Hyo-joo’s eps in 2D1N. ??

I think there is a part of story that was not shown to us. Remember the first time she entered his world in rooftop? She fainted that time also, but she was awake when he pulled her in. What if when he pulled her, the attacker was nearby and somehow she actually got killed in process? But she woke up anyway to save him?
Maybe that's how Kang Chul knows she can't die. But that does not make total sense either because if its so, it should have come up in the webtoon !

... or maybe that scene does exist but it got cut because doesn't involve Kang Chul? Like Yeon-joo said that everything in the manhwa world only spins around Kang Chul and the time would be skipped if there's no Kang Chul/?
I'm so curious for their very first meeting. It looks like that Kang Chul already had a memory about Yeon-joo, at least about the key of his life?

Yeah that could be possible! Maybe he was half dead and did not even remember it until later.
And I have been really curious about something else. I mean death is not the only way to kill off a character. Dad can simple finish his story. Have KC find his parent's killer and hint of a possibility to get together with So Hee. Done. Story over. Dad can move on.
I get his paranoia about wanting to kill him off but would not this be easier? To finish the story?
Maybe KC has not allowed him to progress in any way where the story could end either?

July 28, 2016 at 2:39 AM
@Divyrus
Ikr? I'm afraid that Dad doesn't even know who the killer is, I mean, it could be that in the first place he just want to give the angst to make the story more interesting by 'killing' Kang Chul's whole family. He just merely draw the killer. Then... he stuck, with his divorce he is in a mental breakdown state and couldn't finish his manhwa. The killer could also reflects Dad itself but he doesn't know how to explain more about the killer.
Maybe Kang Chul felt unfair about his storyline?
The monster picture... I've been really curious about that since the first episode. I even thought that Young-joo went into the comic world because she read the words written in the back of it. Kinda like a spell? ??
Everything is possible since Dad always research everything before he draw his comic... to make it more 'real'? Yeah.. Dad, now they are real.

If you know your creation has come to life, I bet your first reaction is to get rid of it. And since his dad become paranoid, the only way he can think of is to kill the character. Even if he finishes the story, KC has already a life of its own. He will continue to make a story of his own, act on his own. YJ's dad became paranoid thinking his creation has become a monster.

That monster pic was scary for sure. There is something significant about it. What is exactly the lore on it?
And I have been thinking, on his way of researching for the story - maybe he just found a real story and wrote the same? What if KC was a real person whose family was killed tragically and he actually died when he jumped off the bridge, and maybe the last minute regret pulled him to be reborn in comic world? And he got stuck there somehow?
And as many have pointed below, maybe that is why he cant be killed? Like Yeon Joo, he is also invincible here, and that is why dad could not kill him?

I guess all we could do is just wait and keep guessing the meaning behind that creepy monster pic.
I wish you're right that it could be KC is actually from the real world that's trapped in a comic world, so that it won't hurt the romance. There will be high possibility that they will end up together... somehow.
I got your point. So they can't be killed if it isn't in their own respective world, right?
Can't wait for eps 4 since finally Yeon-joo will reveal to Kang-chul that he's from comic world. Gotta prepare my heart for the heartbreak. Seeing how devastated Kang-chul in the eps 4 preview T_T

The picture is a painting by the English painter William Blake: The Roman god Saturn is devouring his children because a prophecy fortells his dethroning by one of his cildren. In the end, he gets killed by his son Zeus/Jupiter and the new era of Olympian gods dawns.

@Divyrus and @maknaee
"That monster pic was scary for sure. There is something significant about it. What is exactly the lore on it?"
I believe I can assist here! The mythological story depicted is a part of the origin story of the Olympian Gods. basically Saturn (known to the Greeks as Cronus) was a titan, and the titans were the ones in charge before the olympian pantheon took over. Cronus was the leader of the titans and when he heard a prophecy that he would be overthrown by his children. He decided the only way to prevent this was to EAT them. all of them. one of the children was Jupiter (Zeus) and he RIPPED OPEN his father's stomach. killing him and saving his siblings in the process (so like demeter/ceres, aphrodite/venus, ares/mars, hades/pluto, apollo etc) after this Zeus became the king of olympus, and the leader of the Gods. The End.
as for the story behind the picture in real life. Francisco de Goya painted Saturn Devouring his Son near the late stages of his life. This painting (along with other equally grotesque and affecting paintings) were part of a series (posthumously) titled the Black Paintings. Goya was in mental and physical decline during this time of his life. he actually painted these on the walls of his house and didnt intend to show them to anybody. (they were discovered many years after his death) he had no wife and children (that we know of) with him. So he was really suffering so much with little to no company, and his paintings from that period reflected this. the one shown in the drama is the most famous of his Black Paintings but they are all worth looking at imo! (and im not just saying this cause i did a project on him in college lol)
Anyway, um I dont know how much of this was known by the writer of the drama or if he just thought that the painting looks properly striking and scary (which it does!) so idk how much of this information is relevant to the drama's storyline but i figured i'd share what I know anyway lol.

Tai, you are awesome! Thank you for sharing this.
soooo curious on what happen next in W!
Dunno much about dad's plan when he murdered Chul's family, but I guess dad must be goddamn rich to break 2 cintiqs already (if not more).
I have another theory though.
What if the hooded killer is Chul himself? You see...dad killed off Chul's family when his own family left him, and made Chul commit suicide when he felt devastated (and want to commit suicide himself too, I bet), so we can say that dad and Chul shares same path....but then Chul deviates. Perhaps he doesnt wanna be the bad guy (anymore), so he made his own story.... i think Chul would be so surprised if the face he sees behind that dark costume is himself.

July 28, 2016 at 8:51 AM
Thank you so much Tia!!
I dont know art but that hauntingly dark! Those paintings are lodged into my brain now!
Now am really looking forward to how the writer inferences this into the story! The creator devouring the creation before creation devours the creator.
If the painting is a clue to go by, does it mean dad is making the same mistake as Saturn? All the prophecy things always have a way out, it would never be fulfilled if someone did not act on it after hearing it.
Maybe something else more evil in play here? Above dad and Kang Chul?
mary
July 28, 2016 at 9:08 AM
@bunny, I like your version better. I really don't want Dad to be the masked killer :( I'd rather the end be a conflict between Chul and his dark past.
Though I think if we really go up and up the chain of responsibility, it's still Dad who orchestrated those killings.

I just wanted to add onto your point that Saturn had also overthrown his father Uranus, in order to gain control of the universe himself. Saturn had snuck up on his father and chopped Uranus up into tiny pieces, which he scattered so that they could never become whole again. So he likewise was very paranoid and feared his own children would rise up and overthrow him in the same manner he did to his own father.

@Divyrus
For your question on the painting....it is Saturn devouring his son by Goya. According to the traditional interpretation, it depicts the Greek myth of the Titan Cronus (in the title Romanised to Saturn), who, fearing that he would be overthrown by one of his children, ate each one upon their birth. The work is one of the 14 Black Paintings that Goya painted directly onto the walls of his house sometime between 1819 and 1823.
Various interpretations of the meaning of the picture have been offered: the conflict between youth and old age, time as the devourer of all things, the wrath of God and an allegory of the situation in Spain, where the fatherland consumed its own children in wars and revolution. There have been explanations rooted in Goya's relationships with his own son, Xavier, the only of his six children to survive to adulthood. (according to Wikipedia)

Ooh I like this theory. I think this might be true. There wasn't a reason given to why she fainted and was lying on the ground. In this episode, she fainted because as a result of the 2 months going by so quickly.
I'm not sure if there's an exact rule, but I think it all comes to down Kang Chul. Everything seems to revolve around him. So, maybe Yeon Joo can only go to W when Kang Chul desperately needs her. In ep 1, KC literally grabbed her from the real world.

@Divyrus :
I like your theory about KC seeing YJ being killed on the roof top and yet surviving it. I can see how it could work for the story. I can't wait to see if your theory is correct!
As for Dad trying to kill the character, rather than giving him a a happy ending and be done with it... I am thinking the dad is referring to KC as a "monster" in the sense that KC is alive, with a will of his own, when he shouldn't. Even if Dad gives a happy ending to KC, there is no guarantee that KC will not somehow change. Besides, who knows who else could become like KC.

"but didn’t he said it after she already saved his life?"
I actually thought about this last night (in bed lol) and it makes sense. We know now that his urge to live is so strong that he was able to alter the story's designated path. so it stands to reason that as he was dying he literally pulled in the first person he could help (a doctor!). and she DID help. however in doing so, she became a significant person to Chul which ofc now made her an important person in his world.
At THAT point, she no longer had to be near a screen and he didnt have to be in mortal peril for her to get dragged into the story. anyway that's my take on it so far!

yep. he did intend to shoot her. and i'm with girlfriday on this that he didnt 100% know she'd be unaffected. which is why he made sure to aim in a place that wouldnt immediately kill or maim her. had she actually gotten hurt, she woulda been fine (albeit in alot of pain and also shock D:) if she was immediately attended to (and he has a whole staff for that so). imo he clearly shot her to test his "hypothesis" and we're just lucky that he was right cuz otherwise that isnt exactly a doghouse u can get out of. haha. rly hard to make up for shooting someone regardless of how trivial the injury may have been. (also the amnt of damage done to her shoulder would also be dependent on the type of bullets/gun used. altho THAT i cannot tell by looking haha)

Like I said on another forem earlier, I've been thinking about it, and I love that while the romance is totally ramping up, he doesn't like like her yet. He's intrigued, interested, protective and even a little possessive, but he hasn't fallen yet. THAT'S what I've waiting for. Because LJS does 'in love' better than practically any kdrama actor imo. And KC is such a fascinating character, it is going to be so much fun 1. watching him fall and 2. watching him pursue OYJ.
Watching him pursue her is going to be a blast. Watching her flail about in response is going to be almost as good

I thought his confusion about Yeon Joo being pretty was interesting - the webtoon staff emphasized that this webtoon never goes into romance, so maybe he literally doesn't have the ability to consider her objectively that way? Even Yeon Joo mentions that he compliments women he has no interest in, but it sounds like the webtoon writer never had him show interest, so....
Is it possible that Yeon Joo will be the first time Kang Chul experiences love?

Which is interesting- does it mean that as a manhwa character he was "coded" to consider one type of women as beautiful while YJ's type as not really =P?

ooohhh interesting. It's possible. I also find it interesting that he keeps on questioning why people say she's pretty (Han Hyojoo is very pretty!) AND that it keeps on popping out in his dialogues. It must mean something rather than a simple comment on her looks.

This is what I'm suspecting. When you think about it, much of Kang Chul's life was written during a time when Oh Seung Mo was either going through a divorce or in the aftermath of one. I definitely think he wasn't very romantic-minded during those periods and that could have influenced Kang Chul's persona. That said, Kang Chul has obviously deviated a lot from what Oh Seung Mo had in mind for him so it's hard to say just how much his response towards women comes from his own will.

If some of Oh Seung Mo's feelings somehow influenced the character, its normal that Kang Chul isnt attracted to her because fathers dont think of their daughters that way. And maybe the feeling of wanting to protect her and stuff is coming from there to. Through Oh Seung Mo he somehow knows her but he doesnt. If that makes any sense xD

I was just thinking this! How much of Kang Chul's personality and taste is based off of Seung Mo's preferences?
I also really like the thought that he just wasn't created to focus or think about that.

That's interesting, maybe it's because Yeon Joo was never written to be a romantic interest in the webtoon and therefore Kang Chul can't process her in that way?
When I was watching it I thought that maybe all the other characters see Yeon Joo as pretty, because well female character in webtoons are by default attractive unless otherwise indicated. But since Kang Chul is sentient, he doesn't automatically react in the same way as other characters do in his universe, she's doesn't automatically appear to like a spectacular beauty.
I hope your hunch is right though, because our hero learning to love for the first time is so swoon inducing.

I found it odd too. But it's probably because Kang Chul as a webtoon character is turning to a real human like Yeon Joo. In the comic world Yeon Joo is called a beauty because she's a 3-dimensional character in a 2-dimensional world. While in Yeon Joo's world, she's not considered a beauty. No one mentioned about her being beautiful in the real world like she's average-pretty. So probably he has the same look on Yeon Joo as the people in the real world. Like it's a clue that he's transforming into a real human, deciding his life story without the creator.
This is just my theory.

It is interesting that Kang Chul also never said that Yeon Joo is ordinary or ugly. He is not denying that she is beautiful, either. Imo, he is simply puzzled on what to call her. It's interesting to know what he would call her though, other than weird.

I also thought it was weird that everyone except KC thinks YJ is pretty, but perhaps it's because the webtoon artist is her father and her father definitely see's his daughter as pretty... sooooo by transitive property everyone SHOULD see YJ as pretty even though she may not be "pretty" in the real world (btw if Han Hyo Joo isn't pretty... idk who is...GAHH)
KC may not see YJ as pretty because he's already in between worlds and doesn't follow the webtoon world's rules of automatically seeing YJ as pretty? Just a thought? Bringing in math along with science!

It's peculiar that the writers are being so persistent with Kang Chul not finding Yeon Joo beautiful. This is the 3rd time he's said it in two episodes, and I didn't really think anything of it the first two times considering that in his world the manhwa 'W' has no romance line so his character wasn't written to feel those kinds of emotions, and Yeon Joo pointed out that he only ever compliments girls he isn't interested in and so far he's made it a point to emphasize how NOT beautiful he seems to find Yeon Joo despite everyone in his world thinking contrary to that. After today's episode I don't think he's saying it redundantly, he really sounds like he can't tell if Yeon Joo is beautiful. Is he not flirting/complimenting her despite the fact that it goes against his character BECAUSE he's interested in her ? So maybe Yeon Joo will be the precursor to him having romantic feelings for the first time, since on a human spectrum he seems to have felt all the other emotions through her fathers struggle with divorce and the effect that had on the his story arc in the comic.

I think it's interesting that Yeon Joo is truly NOT pretty compared to the main characters in the Manhwa world - who are all so artsy perfect looking. She looks out of place, like she fell into a painting in each scene because her looks are not in the beautiful range. I mean, why can't I look at anything else when Kang Chul's bodyguard is in the frame? Now, THAT's some beautifully "drawn" comic book character!

Thanks for the speedy recap GF.
I love literally everything about this show. Han Hyo Joo is awesome as the girl who doesn’t know what the hell is going on! She has that deer caught in headlights expression down to a tee. And Lee Jong Suk. I have no trouble at all in believing that he is actually a webtoon character- his looks go perfectly well with those of manhworld. And his acting- I don’t know what he is doing different in this show, but it is sure working!
And can I just say how good the story is! It kind of reminds of this book I read long back called “Inkheart” where the girl had the power to bring book characters to life and also enter the book- world. And then there are touches of “Frankenstein”.
It is clear that a lot of details has gone into making the story and then setting up the world. It is amazing how the story teller had to think up of world within a world and find separate details for both these universes. The direction, production and everything that goes behind- the- scenes has been clearly done by experts.
Here is looking forward to more brilliance!

YES!!!! This point is exactly why I'm struggling with Doctors and one of the many reasons I struggled with DoTS. The forced music insertion drives me nuts. I mean totally NUTS!!!! I end up yelling at my computer in Doctors when the music is trying to force me to feel a scene is funny or dramatic. A great use of dramatic music is episode 12 of Task Force 38, when things really did ramp up to that level. The music in W and in UF right now is great.

Exactly. My bone to pick with DOTS, which was why I dropped it. They used songs too much to force the watchers to feel. Non-lyrical music sets the mood, too, but you get to incorporate the actual context of the scene to realize what you feel for that particular piece of airtime. Plus it's more cinematic. So props to the musical director, too.

True. The musical direction of W reminded me a little of Sherlock, where you have a soundtrack instead of lyrical song to emphasis the tone of the storytelling. Although W soundtrack is not as distinct as Sherlock.

Lol. I saw a BTS from MBC showing how Lee Jong Suk's pulse spiked when he grabbed Han Hyo Joo. Funny how that counters Kang Chul's iron-ckad pulse control.
I love this episode. The lengths Yeon Joo goes to te exit the manhwa are hilarious. Choi Seung Jae's (sorry, his name still hasn't stuck) reactions are priceless. That high-five was funny. And that "in love" comment was insightful. That face-off was tense and dark, and some people would find Chul shooting Yeon Joo a deal-breaker, but man did they surprise me. That scene was rather delicate, come to think of it, but it ended up being awesomely shot and so fast-paced and pretty much anything you could hope for in such a scene.
And dear God, Lee Jong Suk. You being this masterful is wreaking havoc on my insides.

I am just enormously relieved to see LJS be more manly and alpha in this drama because I've always been turned off by how skinny he is and how 'soft' he appears to be - despite being a great actor and great kisser. I wonder how the comic went to life. Was it the dad's will extended to his work and the character he made - Kang Chul - that brought it to life or something else.
Also, if Yeon Joo can't be killed in the comic world cause she's not from there, does that mean Kang Chul won't be killed if he transports to the real world?
If that's the case that you can't be killed in the universe/dimension/world where you don't came from, then it is possible that Kang Chul is a comic character turning to a real human and he can't be killed in the comic world either so Yeon Joo is used as a catalyst to save him in that world which is beyond the cartoonist, Yeon Joo or Kang Chul's control?
Why Yeon Joo? Because she's the cartoonist daughter and the reason he decided to kill Kang Chul in the first place. He said "Yeon Joo left me. I'm alone now" then plans to end Kang Chul's life at the Han River Bridge.
I think the reason why he believed (I think it's his theory still) that Yeon Joo is from a different world was because of the evidence she left/showed like her hospital ID and gown. Also the car accident. He knew something was off and add to that was the fact that she didn't die when he shot her.

My theory on how the comic came to life: Yeon Joo went back to her dad's house that night in 2009 for some reason. Maybe she forgot something. He doesn't know because he has already finished drawing the death scene and is now passed out drunk. She takes a peek at his drawing board for spoilers and is shocked by the suicide. It has already been an emotional day for her, and Kang Chul's death is the last straw. There are tears. She cries herself to sleep that night and has strange dreams in which she saves Kang Chul.
Her grief for him is real enough that it transforms him into a real boy. Like Pinocchio coming to life through Gepeto's love or Tinkerbell being healed by enough people believing in fairies.
KC recognizes YD from the time she came to him in her dreams and saved him on the bridge. Which is why he knows she is the key to his life.
I like your theory that KC becoming real makes him invincible the manwha world.

@Amilia I like your theory! Although I think instead of going home and having dreams that made him real, I think she draws him back! She redoes the whole scene. In episode two, her aunt (I think) tells Yeon-joo's mom that she should have let her continue with her drawing instead of forcing her to become a doctor. In tonight's episode, she said that was the saddest she ever felt. She thought he was going to commit suicide. What if she goes back home, her dad is pass out drunk and sees the screen, and she redraws him back to life?
Work has been extremely stressful. I've been working almost 12 hours every day. This drama is the only thing that's keeping me happy!

It might be even possible that YJ's is the one who originally created KC's character, and was then adapted by her dad into a manhwa. And that's why she is the key to his life because she created him.
During the time that her parents were still on the process of getting the divorce, it must have been difficult for her and that's the time she created KC.

This is exactly what went through my mind also, what if Kang Chul is a real person who got stuck in the manga world, and that is why he can't be killed?
What if he is a actual person who faced a tragedy and committed suicide? Maybe the regret pushed him back into being reborn in comic world? Maybe dad actually used something of the real life person to start off his story? That somehow gave a connection?

I loved that line where he was talking about her "slapping him then kissing him then flashing him, then pointing a gun at him". I really like the comedic relief.
My jaw dropped when he actually shot her! I didn't expect that and it made me uncomfortable, because even though he knows that she is different there is no guarantee that that bullet wouldn't have badly wounded her. So that was a big risk he took, and it showed that he's a grey character. Thankfully she didn't get hurt.
However on the other hand I love that this makes the show unpredictable, and I really hope that the author will continue with that. In addition this also made me think of something else, if she can't get hurt in his world, then does that mean that once he goes to her world he will be invincible? I hope that in the end the world of the manga can merge with the real world, and then our H/h can get their happy ending.
I'm also looking forward to the showdown between Kang Chul and Yeon Joo's father, which we all know is coming (probably in the last episodes). I loved how that scene was directed, when KC looks straight at the camera and says "I will find you", but it's almost as if he's talking to the viewer, as he's talking to YJ's father who he still doesn't know. Also I think that what is pulling YJ into the manga is KC's will.
I am so looking forward to what's going to happen next. I hope that we will be getting some good kisses out of this show, and maybe even a bed scene. In short, this show continues to surpass my expectations, and I just hope that it can continue to be this way till the end!

He didn't. Kang is written a someone so obsessed with his goal that everything he does is simply in service to it. This was just one more step to him. The whole love-line is likely an attempt to soften that and "save him"

yep I dont think he truly knwe 100 percent that she wouldnt be hurt. which is why he aimed where he aimed. it would be a non lethal and non crippling place to shoot. esp if she is patched up right away. he is good marksmen afterall. i hope she finds out btw that he didnt reallyyyy know she wouldnt be hurt. boy deserves a smack or 10 for that.

When he shot her, I screamed! Then I wonder how he knew she'd be invincible?
My sis answered, "Maybe last night, he just loaded the gun with bullets and bang-bang-bang-bang" LMAO
But we also think, maybe the start of the tussle with the killer, the gun was actually fired and Kang-chul saw that it didn't affect YJ at all? Right before he pushed the killer away from the bedroom.

After the scene i was praying that she would be mad with him and not just brushed it off as pheww im alive.. she was mad for a few minutes but I thought she could have been more angry and betrayed or smthg. Tho the fact that kang chul sincerely apologised afterwards does soften the shooting, i guess hmm

Science says results should be repeatable and verifiable for them to be valid. So how did he know it's safe to shoot OYJ unless he did it multiple times? XD

I absolutely, 100% did not expect him to shoot her. But this writer is so clever I'm positive that Kang Chul had excellent reason to think she was going to be invincible - clearly he's met someone else similar, possibly the guy trying to kill him. A marksman would HAVE to know whether or not his shot hit home, and he's constantly being attacked by assassins. He must have shot people before to no effect.
I loooove that Yeon Joo is treating the manwhorld as real but temporary, and is willing to do almost anything to get out with little shame. The sneak-attack confession was fantastic - he's not going to be able to let down his guard for an instant! It also amuses me to think that later in the series there will likely be moments when they want to kiss and will have to think creatively to evade the "to be continued" chyron.
I love when worldbuilding is smart, and this is smart. I also love that some of the more ridiculous elements in manwhorld are actually easily explained when you remember you're actually watching a webtoon. And the plot is moving fast, despite there being a LOT of talking. And I really like that Kang Chul actually might be slightly nuts at this point - when you think of his viewpoint, and the possible constant overwriting happening in his brain as he escapes death? No wonder he's lost touch a bit.
Very excited about this one!

"...I’m positive that Kang Chul had excellent reason to think she was going to be invincible"
You may be right, but he still took a risk (can't Kang Chul ever be wrong?). And even if we was 100% certain, he still acted like a pitiless jerk! He terrorized that poor girl by holding her at gunpoint (she, at least, had absolutely no idea that she was invincible); he scared her so badly that she fainted in shock. After she'd saved his life, moreover! Twice!
I get that he's frustrated, that he wants (and deserves?) answers, and that she'd promised him those answers and then reneged. But I'm still very disturbed by what that scene revealed about Kang Chul. By all rights, he was suspect in the first place because he is NOT human. As a paper creation, does he have a soul, with all that entails? As something that isn't human, can he possess feelings, morality, empathy... all those characteristics that add up to humanity?
And now, after that gunpoint and shooting scene, I find Kang Chul even more questionable. He's certainly revealed a ruthless streak, a hardhearted callousness that should give us all at least a little bit of pause in our fangirling.
Which is all say... I really love what this drama is doing so far with its characters. :)

I loved what that scene revealed about our heroine's hero. It just shows me how interpretation and perception from the viewer can be wrong or have an incomplete version of what a character is actually like. He showed he can be cold, calculating, and ruthless for his own priorities..something she has never witnessed before or never interpreted before..that only now that she is face to face with him she can actually experience. It's just so awesome to think about in relation to us (the readers/viewers) of the literary/arts world..

I think he was 100% sure she's invincible, but not 100% sure if she's lying or aware that she is invincible. That's why he had to gauge if she believes she'll really die, or if she's being mum about her secrets because she's confident she'll live.
Of course the answer is neither! :P She's not aware she's invincible, but she won't divulge the truth that easily either.

This! This is exactly how I read the situation. In fact, I think her persisting in not telling him just confirmed his belief that she wasn't really afraid of dying. Still, I am surprised that he couldn't sense her palpable fear of getting shot. Even though she is keeping things from him, she has been very open about her feelings and has shown herself to be a horrible liar.

I thought he was surprised that she was afraid to die. That's why when she woke up, he asked "Didn't you know you were invincible?"
Or maybe he's surprised that she thinks her secrets are worth more than her life. Man, when he finds out that the secret is actually about him, he's going to feel like a giant ass.
serhine
July 28, 2016 at 2:41 PM
I also think he's already 100% sure that she wouldn't be harmed. To me, the reason he kept at the shooting threat was to make YJ admit that she knows she won't die, not knowing that she doesn't and ending up shooting her to prove it. The point is, to me, he never meant her any harm. Though I have to agree about how he couldn't seem to sense her fear. Maybe it has to do with him not being able to see how she's pretty? And besides, if they're going to say shooting her was only one step closer to his goal, I don't think he would actually go as far as possibly hurting "the key" to his life.
The bottomline to all of this is he knows 100% that she wouldn't be harmed. Thus, he never meant and would never mean hear any harm. (Please don't let me be wrong, show.)

I never thought of your theory but it would make so much sense! Had he tried to injure/kill the villains in the past and always failed because they were invincible.. hmm. I agree that he must have had interaction with invincible assassins in the past and he linked that to the ability to disappear after the black hooded assassin disappeared in the elevator. When he starts to question her, he focuses on the ability to disappear. His logic is she can disappear like the assassin so she must be invincible as well. The ruthlessness of his action was startling.
I am enamored by Han Hyo Joo's acting. I find myself having to rewind scenes because I missed reading the subtitles as I was focused on her expressive face. She is so funny. Her acting has improved by leaps and bounds since Spring Waltz. I recently saw the movie The Beauty Inside and thought she was wonderful.

He totally must have seen something that made him 99% sure of her immortality. The way he/the show is keeping the clue away from us strengthens my faith in it being big enough for the risk he took to be almost justifiable. And, I'd also like to point out, given how much she was keeping from him, I'm starting to assume that he genuinely thought she knew about her own abilities. After all, she's clearly the one with the most information in this scenario so I could see why he didn't expect her to be unaware of her own invincibility.
Lol, I love that the writer has made the perfect out for herself. Whenever we're in manwhorld, she can pretty much get away with anything. We can't even get pissed at bad security because OSM takes the blame for writing them that way.

How you been? Been long! FInally another show that is bringing me out from lurking!
You are right, imagine us seeing the entire drama from KC perspective, a random woman comes in - saves him and disappears, knows everything about him. What would we all be theorizing if we did not know KC is in manhwa world ! We will be totally suspicious of her too! He must believe her to be some kind of time traveler or someone from alternate universes(but somehow real), he is gonna be in for a shock when he finds out his world is not real!
I wish that happens sooner than later, they they could both be on same side and figure out what the hell is going on!

I like that we're jumping into Kang Chul's story thinking we know what the story is (the parents-revenge storyline Yeon Joo knows from the manhwa) but there's actually an entirely DIFFERENT storyline happening in his own head that's been going on for a while (what's up with all of the invincible vanishing ninjas trying to kill me).
So from KC's perspective, Yeon Joo isn't exactly a bolt from the blue - she's a break in the case that he's been looking for for years and finally got. It explains a lot about why he's able to be methodical and cold-blooded about the entire thing - he's been preparing for this for a while.
I'm just ridiculously excited that Kang Chul could have an entire alternate storyline that the manhwa readers never saw, because he never says it out loud, just thinks about it.
And you're right about manhworld being the perfect out - I was annoyed that Kang Chul was standing there with passed-out Yeon Joo in his arms chatting with detectives, like it was totally natural, until I realized that that actually is how it might be written in a comic book. You need to pack scenes into a short number of panels, going to the bedroom to drop her off and come back would waste time. So we get Kang Chul effortlessly holding onto Yeon Joo for minutes at a time.

I like the thought, but I don't think that's the case... Though the gun did have a silencer, so who knows.
He could've been staring at her for a lot of reasons: wondering if she's in on it, wondering if she'll hear and wake up, trying to protect her, etc. Though in rewatching the scene I now kind of wonder what her dad was thinking in drawing it? Does HE know that Yeon Joo can't be killed in manhworld? Did he draw her into unconsciousness when he realized she was there? Or did he just rashly send a vanishing ninja assassin into a place where his daughter could become collateral damage?

I was JUST describing Nine's time-travel conceit to someone, specifically the pretty novel idea that the jump span is fixed and precise, and that the changes resulting from the jump are actually cascading into your new future in time with that 20-year span. So you could jump, change things, come back to an altered future... And then STILL have to deal with rolling changes as the rest of your life was impacted by the paced happenings from 20 years earlier. I'd never seen it done that way before.
I have high hopes that the writer's put in the same sort of complex thought for parallel worlds, and that the secondary characters will have as much free agency as the Nine background characters.

If it does, this just may be my new favourite show. Nine was AMAZING. I actually used it as a gateway drama for someone (I know, not exactly super-representative of K-dramas) because of how well everything in that show came together. And I like this even better so far with the manhwa backdrop and parallel dimension setup. But I've been let down by dramas before *cough* God's Gift - 14 days *cough*. For us viewers, Oh Yeon Joo is the main heroine. But for the W webstoon readers, she's the unneeded and unwanted second female character who's blocking a potential romance between KC and SH. I'm the type who's almost always for the MAIN pairing to always be together. I rarely suffer the second-lead syndrome. The longer YJ was in the KC's world I started to think about how much of this was being conveyed to the readers.
Personally if a manga I'd been reading suddenly changed from a revenge story to this self aware, fourth wall breaking thing and a new female character is introduced to break up my ship I'd think the author had gone nuts and drop the manga from my read list.

SH is your badass, no-nonsense female leads many are craving for. She's smart, sexy, and speaks her mind. YeonJoo, in the eyes of the webtoon readers, is your weird, almost damsel-in-distress character! I can really imagine the webtoon readers getting soooo annoyed at her appearance.
I'd probably stop reading, but continue to monitor the story since it's creating such buzz. I'd whine (like Crazy Dog) how YJ is ruining the story and would swear that I won't touch anything the author will do from now on.

I mean, if that world ( the time, and the people) only revolved around Kang Chul(and wtf he doesn't aged??!), that means technically, theoritically, and practically is not a real world. I mean it seems like the only living person in that world is kang chul and the rest just serves as the background, pretty much one dimensional character.

I'm taking Korean lessons now and my Korean teacher said that in Korea it's very common to ask questions like age and marital status as "small talk" even though in other countries that is considered very personal information. She said Koreans do that to know if they have any topics of common interest and also I think so that they know how to address the other party (depending on the relative age). Yesss!! There is something about the height difference and the need for Jongsuk to bend and move his head to the side that makes you swoon! ohgod he does it really well and he's one of the actors who makes kissing scenes look real. My fave is his kiss scene with PSH in EP 8 of Pinocchio.

I swear, I saw that drama special with the woman with cancer, and I could have sworn that woman was totally feeling Lee Jong Suk's kiss. Hahaha! I think that came out before School 2013, so he was pretty young then. The woman had to be in her late thirties or even forties. Man, but he made the romance work!

I think we're all rooting for Kang Chul because...duh, he's the hero in the drama we're watching (and handsome...and rich...and cheeky *wink*). But this episode also did a really good job at showing us Dad's perspective, and I really do see why he's so horrified by what he's created. A paper character has literally come alive, and he's writing his own story--and he might become powerful enough to cross over into the Real World. *shiver* If he weren't so handsome (and we weren't pre-programmed to see him as the Hero to root for) wouldn't we all be getting flashbacks to creepy Samara from "The Ring" stepping out from the TV to devour the ones watching? When I saw that in "The Ring", I had to hit pause and turn on the light--yet now here I am shivering with anticipation when Kang Chul's looking into the screen and threatening... whoever is watching. But it's just as creepy!!
If Dad were this drama's hero (and young & handsome, natch!) wouldn't we root for him to defeat/destroy his :monstrous: creation before said monster unleashed hell on its creator (and the real world)? And really, who can say that Kang Chul isn't the monster/villain in that story? Even in :this: story, Kang Chul isn't human--so it might be a fallacy to ascribe him human motives and limits (i.e. imposed by human morality/empathy). He's certainly proven he's dangerous, he's ruthless; he will stop at nothing to achieve his objective. He obviously won't hesitate to threaten at gunpoint even the person who's saved his life... and pull the trigger. Really, how DID he know that she wouldn't be hurt?

Thanks for the recap, GF!
Thanks for the fast subs, team!
Wow, so many things happening and I love the fast pace of each ep. The things that YJ tries to do to end the scene are so funny and lead to all sorts of hijinks. XD From the gun vs. lingerie to the shooting and later, the love declaration. LOL I'm already anticipating what the writer will come up with in future ep's.
The kiss experiment! Haha! No wonder they said there will be lots of kisses!!
KC caught on pretty fast about her being from another world. I guess that's part of his intelligence as a genius. So, YJ cannot be killed in this W comic world. It's very interesting to learn the rules as we watch along. ^^ But like you, I'm also wondering how he knew that. I agree about his coldness being one aspect that YJ might not know about, and that he'd fire the shot if only 50/50 chance.
Whoa... The hooded assassin! So, while YJ is stuck in W world, her dad must have been attempting to kill KC again. But KC's fighting spirit and will to live prove to be too overpowering for dad... I found it intriguing since if this changed during the pivotal moment at the Hangang Bridge, dad must have lived in fear and anxiety all this time. No wonder he's always drinking...
The ending scene!! That was really touching since you can see that KC feels YJ's sincerity and genuine concern. Looks like she's gonna be around for a while and I don't mind her staying by his side. But I am worried how dad plans to keep killing him off.
Anyway, happy to see the ratings shoot up! Loving this series so far!! Ep, 4, bring it on! ^^

What is this is all another comic? I mean, what if, at the end of all this...LJS and HHJ are actually married, LJS is a comic artist and HHJ is a doctor and he's writing this crazy story!?
Or HHJ is in a coma dreaming this extremely strange dream?
Either way, loving this show~~!!

I can practically hear Yeonjoo's brain whirred all episode long. It's such an unbelievable truth for people living in that webtoon world that it doesn't really matter at this moment whether she told him the truth or not. They wouldn't be able to believe it anyway.
But then, invicible people? How come Kang Chul knows about those kind of people? It's not like Yeonjoo's father has created such a character in that webtoon before.. Or is he??

I was wondering about that too, but at this point I'm pretty sure it's coincidental.
KC: "Hello concierge, I'd like some lingerie for the unconscious woman I just carried into my apartment."
Concierge: "Of course sir, what size?"
KC: "She wore a size XS dress?"
Concierge: "Any other details?"
KC: "She's an insane violent nymphomaniac, but also sometimes kind of cute."
Concierge: "On it."

He truly believes that she is the key to his very existence so I doubt he didn't think she was invincible before he shot her. Having said that, he's an expert shooter so he may intentionally missed her heart and shot closer to her shoulder, IDK.
Either way, I liked the scene purely from an entertainment perspective. It's much more entertaining to watch a hero that may be various shades of gray then all good or all bad. It shows us that maybe Chul isn't what and who we think he is. He's much more layered, and I can't wait to discover his true self.

yeah imo he INTENTIONALLY aimed where he aimed. its already been established he was an expert marksman. and since he's been planning revenge all this time i dont see why he'd let those skills deteriorate over time. when he said he was just trying to scare and he "missed" i was like BULL.SHIT
he totally intended to shoot her and he was totally doing a test. Im sure he felt confident in his hunch that she wouldnt be hurt but i still dont buy that he 100 percent knew (altho even if he did he still nearly scared her half to death so. not cool dude. not cool at all.) cuz if he did KNOW (not just think) she was invincible then why not aim somewhere more risky or dramatic like her head or her heart? maximum impact and likely instant kill shot. but yeah he was prepared to wound her (if he was wrong) but he ofc didnt want to kill her or otherwise leave lasting damage to her. except you know on her PSYCHE if he had been wrong.
she's surprisingly more understanding at being shot than i would be. altho he does have a sweet charming smile. so i cant blame her hahaha.

btw, does that mean KC can't be hurt in the other world? Whaaaat? I want him to be real
when she flashed him - i covered my eyes in embarrassment. and then peaked through. best scene ever!
i'm going to go against the general opinion and say that this episode felt a little off to me. Bad editing. or too much happening without proper setup - the shooting, how did KC immediately jump to other world conclusion, lots of shocking things happened: did KC not change emotion at all?, dude why are you suddenly going on a business trip this is far more imp.....
i think this week's episodes are basically to get KC to know the truth so they are sort of rushing through it. And the actual story will start from next week,

Yep I get why you would say that the editing is bad. Transitions from scene to scene were really choppy. There was a LOT of talking in this episode and not a lot of action.
The scene where he shot her was oddly out of place, the show has some explaining to do. And the pacing of the show slowed down quite a bit - hopefully it'll pick up by next episode. Nonetheless I'm still properly hooked to this one and I'm not going anywhere on w-day.

I am madly in love with Kang Chul and live vicariously through his #1 fangirl Yeon Joo. Who knew a simple "That's good" could be so swoon-worthy? Yeon Joo's spontaneous outbursts to achieve a "To be continued" make her so endearing. I love Do Yoon's shocked expressions every time. Although, I felt embarrased for her when she flashed them since now that is in print for the whole world to see.
Had Dad planned the TV show W since the beginning? Otherwise, why is the manhwa named W? If Dad had killed off Kang Chul on Hangang Bridge, he would have never became rich to have bought the broadcast station. Dad needs to chill with the alcohol.
After its premiere last week, everyone and their mother knew W would win the ratings this week, and did it ever. Best currently airing show on television. A huge thanks for the recap, girlfriday!

And that is a real lacy see through bra screencap GF. Wow.
And I've never been that keen to for a heroine to be shot before. I was genuinely shocked she wasn't bleeding. Did I miss a comic book rule somewhere? Plus I repeated the 39th minute scene like 4 times because I couldn't believe my eyes. Am laughing just recalling it. Which insane manhwa series has the female lead ever flashing the male lead? In fact whuch comic book ever even has such a scene. Jeepers it's only episode 3. What does the writer think she is going to do to continue the episodes?

Haha. His shot was meant to kill/seriously injure. IRL even if he missed her heart, he would have hit her lung, maybe one of the big blood vessels supplying her heart.
Only way she would survive is if she were the hero in a Hollywood action movie who gets shot 1000x but still cannot die, or SJK in DOTS, or in this case a manhwa traveling fangirl trying to save her hero. ?

No rules apply in the world of webtoons so characters can do anything - like Chul knowing that bullets won't hurt Yeon-joo. But then he is so surprised that she can only know what is coming next for him if she is in the other world. But somehow Chul must know that the creator (Yeon-joo) is trying to kill him off. Oh, was that Yeon-joo's father in the hoodie?

So what tops having watched an amazing episode of drama with intriguing plots, lovable and complex characters, gorgeous cinematography, and absolutely superb acting? Coming here to read a masterpiece recap of course xD!!! Thank you GF, I was refreshing this website non-stop for your review like it's my new OCD.
I agree with everything you said up there, and *especially* this- "...and it wouldn’t shock me if he shot her with fifty-fifty odds that she might live or die". While KC does appear to have "encountered" something or someone to know that a being from "something like another dimension/parallel universe" would be invincible here, let's not forget up until the end of this episode he still does not know just "what" YJ is and where she's from. In other words, he does NOT know for a FACT that YJ's particular "specimen" (for want of a better term) will not die from gunshot.
So I believe that there indeed is this monster-like dark streak in KC, which is maybe what prompted him to do the impossible- defying his creator/destiny in the first place. If KC is supposed to really be 100% sure the bullet will not wound YJ, then I can only accept that he's an overconfident moron who incorrectly has absolute trust in his instinct plus some partial/indirect factual evidence.
However I am fine with this flaw of his because whatever his true "form" is (a Manhwa character or something else), KC is definitely not considered "normal" in "our world". Plus a dark character who is still capable of feeling sincere remorse for his wrong-doing makes him even more fun to watch.
Oh and GF, "It’s funny that he’s a fictional character who’s treating her more like an object—his key—while she’s the one treating a manhwa hero like he’s a real person." Just want to say I fangirl this sentence of yours, such witty description of the current dynamics between the two.
Now that I've gotten the serious stuffs out of the way, I need to blabber about just how much I love, love, LOVE this frigging awesome show XD!!! Firstly Oh Yeon-joo's character, she has actually displayed a duality of persona just like how KC with his two "faces" (one kind and one dark). YJ might at times act like a total lunatic (and be completely hilarious at that), but she *always* has very good logic behind these seemingly irrational behaviors. It's just that her trials & errors that are based on sound hypothesis end mostly in errors, because unfortunately KC possesses this rare unflappable personality, making him immune to her crazy antics that would have shocked 99% of the human population XDDD Also, YJ may not be portrayed as an outright genius, but she is VERY clever and observant, evidenced in how she is always quick to figure out rules of KC's universe. In addition, while YJ panics a lot, she is actually already calmer than most human beings would be if thrown in her situations (Su-bong would probably have died from pure horror XD). So yeah, she is my FAVORITE...

(cont) for it's not often that you come across a heroine who's both crazy and rational, silly and intelligent, timid and yet calm/brave. Plus she surely makes me laugh A LOT.
Which brings me to Han Hyo-joo, who is PERFECT in how she portrays Yeon-joo, I just can't imagine ANYONE else portraying this role as well as she does. I absolutely admire how she delivers the most subtle and accurate facial expression and tone, like how the part where she sleep-talked is totally believable - I could feel the fatigue and trance-like state in her voice. And the scene where she talks to KC before he leaves for the trip? Both Hyo-joo and Lee Jong-seok were *spot on* there! The way their eye expressions, their tones gradually change from playful to sincere and gentle, just perfect.
Oh and the truckload of CHEMISTRY between these two! I can't think of many drama couples that are as in-sync with each other as JS and HJ.
My favorite supporting character is Su-bong, I can never get tired of watching his sibling-like interactions with YJ, that are both hilarious and heart-warming. But my love for Professor Mad Dog is strong too- he made me laugh out loud in each and every scene that he appeared in.
As for YJ's dad, OMG this just showcases how amazing the show's writing is! I spent two episodes not liking Dad one bit, yet in a span of minutes I completely understood how he must have felt when KC, a frigging manhwa character began to rebel against him. Annnnnd, this leads to another two strong suits of the show- the directing and the camerawork! I was spoilt-rotten before going into ep.3, knowing exactly what Dad would encounter and yet, seeing the actual scenes still managed to give me goosebumps!
Lastly, just want to point out a less-mentioned foreshadowing in this episode- the fact that time-skipping in KC's universe exhausted YJ. I guess this means her body/health will gradually be damaged as she travels some more times between the two dimensions =( ? And of course there are just so many other elements that could lead to a possible tragic ending for this show (not like our writer-nim hasn't done it before!) which makes me a bit wary. But hey, I am determined to enjoy the show for as long as I can, no matter the ending =D!!!
