Police Unit 38: Episode 11
by festerfaster
It’s an episode of unravelling truths and dealing with betrayals on several fronts, for all of our characters. And it’s been a long time coming, but we finally learn what drives our hero and why he double-crossed his friends. While revenge is served up on a satisfactory platter, Jung-do has to now decide if it was worth alienating everyone who cared about him.
EPISODE 11 RECAP
We rewind to the moment in the diner after Sung-il and Jung-do get out of lockup. Sung-il walks off to meet Bang Min-ah and Jung-do says he’ll go visit Bang Ho-seok. Instead, Jung-do calls up Mr. Kim in prison, asking for his call to be transferred to the common room, and Mr. Kim comments to Chairman Wang that Jung-do seems to be starting in earnest now.
Mayor Chun and Commissioner Ahn head into a lunch meeting with President Bang. The mayor wonders why he wants to meet, and Commissioner Ahn speculates that it could be because of a favor he did President Bang a few days ago. It seems that Section Chief Baek of Division One is friends with a certain prosecutor, and President Bang had asked Commissioner Ahn to use this connection to get Detective Jae-sung out of prison.
But when Commissioner Ahn opens the door to the restaurant’s private dining room, Mayor Chun freezes at the doorway to see Chairman Choi sitting at the table with President Bang. After an uncomfortable meal, Chairman Choi dismisses President Bang from the dining room, and a humiliated President Bang goes outside to join Commissioner Ahn.
Jung-do gets dropped off at President Bang’s house by his mysterious associate. The man (whose face we don’t see) pats his shoulder in support, and Jung-do smiles and thanks him before getting out of the car. Jung-do rings the doorbell and introduces himself to the startled wife of President Bang as the son of Director Kim Kyung-ae.
Commissioner Ahn asks President Bang if he told the chairman about the scam. Bang says he decided that Ahn was right and there was nothing to be gained by telling him. Then President Bang gets a call from his wife that startles him, and he abruptly decides to head home.
Inside the dining room, Chairman Choi asks the mayor why he didn’t tell the chairman about his employee conning people for taxes. He asks if it’s because Mayor Chun was trying to protect his daughter. The mayor looks nervous at the mention of a daughter, then we cut to Sung-hee back at the office, unable to concentrate on her work because she’s worried about Sung-il. Chairman Choi makes it clear that he sees this as a betrayal and emphasizes that the mayor is easily replaceable.
The two go out to find Commissioner Ahn waiting for them alone. Ahn explains that President Bang left in a hurry, but even Mayor Chun seems surprised that he would leave without saying goodbye to the chairman. Chairman Choi directs a lackey to check on President Bang to ensure he’s not in trouble.
President Bang arrives home to find Jung-do waiting for him. He laughs to realize that Jung-do is the son of an old employee, Director Kim, whom he used as a scapegoat when his illegal pyramid scheme business was investigated. Bang had set her up to get arrested to avoid a jail sentence himself. He asks, amused, if Jung-do tried to scam him in an effort to avenge his mother.
Not just his mother, answers Jung-do, but also his father, Detective Yang, whom President Bang had imprisoned on false charges of bribery. But they shouldn’t dwell on the past, Jung-do says, and reveals the last act of their scam on the Bang family. He tells President Bang that all the ceramic antiques collected by his daughter had already been sold off while he was busy trying to bring charges against Jung-do and Sung-il at the precinct.
At exactly this point, his panicked daughter calls him and hands the phone over to Sung-il. Standing in the empty basement with Bang Min-ah, Sung-il pronounces that President Bang’s $50 million in tax debt has now been paid off in full. President Bang turns to Jung-do, and says with a laugh that he’s smarter than his parents, but what he doesn’t realize is that Bang is close with the mayor and will just get his money back again.
Jung-do looks like he expected this but was hoping to avoid what he has to do next. Looking resigned, he calls up Sung-il and breaks the man’s heart with a few well-chosen words. “I’ll just use the money, all right? I did all the work anyway.” Hanging up on a furious Sung-il, Jung-do asks President Bang what he intends to do, now that his close friend can’t get him a refund.
President Bang has no answer, but Jung-do gives him an option. “Apologize,” he says, “and it’ll all be over.” President Bang gets worked up over being threatened and Jung-do asks if he is willing to lose $50 million when an apology will get him the money back. In a panic, Sung-il calls up Hak-joo, who remembers that Jung-do doesn’t have the money — Madam Noh does.
President Bang swears at Jung-do, who calls up Madam Noh and tells her to go ahead as planned. Madam Noh says it’ll take her five minutes and Jung-do explains to President Bang that if he doesn’t apologize he’ll lose $10 million every minute. President Bang keeps blustering and Jung-do starts walking away. Suddenly, all bravado gone, Bang curtly says sorry. Jung-do tells him to say it respectfully in jondaemal.
Through gritted teeth, his face grim, President Bang apologizes again. He uses correct honorifics and admits to everything he did to Jung-do’s parents. But Jung-do doesn’t think it’s sincere enough. His face hard, he asks President Bang if he remembers what he said right after his father was sentenced and separated from him without a chance to say goodbye.
In flashback, as Jung-do’s father received his sentence, he tried to run to his son one last time. Father and son broke down in sobs in the courtroom, and guards had to carry his father away while Jung-do was held back by Detective Jae-sung. In the present, Jung-do repeats word-for-word what President Bang had said to an inconsolable younger Jung-do: “Don’t let it get to you. That is life. We have to bear it.”
President Bang falls to his knees at Jung-do’s feet and apologizes repeatedly. Jung-do looks down at him, his eyes unreadable, when Madam Noh calls from the top of a skyscraper with boxes of money stacked at her feet. She asks what he wants to do and Jung-do tells her to dump the lot. President Bang erupts in anger and tries to strangle Jung-do.
Madam Noh gives the go-ahead and henchmen parked on top of dozens of high-rises upturn boxes of money on the pedestrians below. Jung-do says that the money is going where it belongs and walks out. President Bang screams like a madman and collapses in hysterics, while people on the streets gather his precious black money by the armful.
Sung-il reaches the Freezer and asks the shocked crew where Jung-do is. Detective Deok-bae and Sung-hee watch the news in their respective offices, covering the story of money raining from the sky amounting to about $50 million dollars.
Jung-do thanks Madam Noh for her help over the phone, and she asks if Sung-il will ever recover from what happened. Jung-do pauses for a moment and says that it can’t be helped. Madam Noh tells him that she followed his directions because that’s what Chairman Wang asked of her, but that she won’t help him again. Jung-do promises to never call her till he dies.
Sung-il sits drinking in Jung-do’s apartment and Mi-joo cleans up the counter. She tells him that she’ll be going on the run after today. She conned Jae-sung for Jung-do’s sake, she says, and now Jung-do’s backstabbed her and the cops are after her.
Sung-il says bitterly that Jung-do ruined everything, and that Sung-il will never be able to face the people he was trying to avenge. Mi-joo points out quietly that Jung-do didn’t keep the money for himself. She advises him to think of it as the money going directly to the people, instead of through the government.
Chairman Choi sees the news and decides to pay the mayor a visit. The chairman asks Mayor Chun what he intends to do now and suggests that they cut off their tails. A proper investigation into that money will eventually lead to himself, he says.
Thus, he begins by shedding President Bang, who he estimates will get a long prison sentence for UN Communications, his family’s illegal pyramid scheme business. Chairman Choi throws in the Bang siblings too, saying that it would look better to the public if the whole family went to prison, and his own connection with their business will end for good.
Having gotten rid of his own liabilities, Chairman Choi turns his attention to the mayor’s tails. Both Section Chief Baek and Commissioner Ahn can be arrested for trying to use their connection with a prosecutor to get Jae-sung released. After them, there’s just Sung-il and the Division Three team to take care of.
The mayor promises to handle Sung-il himself but balks at the chairman’s suggestion to close down the tax-collecting bureau altogether. He points out that the public likes this department, but the chairman isn’t really requesting — he’s giving an order. Chairman Choi admits to owing $100 million in taxes but believes what he contributes to society is worth more than that, and doesn’t want tax collectors bothering him. He tells Mayor Chun to disband the department by the end of the year.
And just as the chairman prophesied, everything falls into place. The Bang family is investigated and arrested, while Ahn and Section Chief Baek are escorted from their offices in full view of all the tax department employees. As Commissioner Ahn is dragged down the hall by the detectives, Sung-il stops on his way to the office and asks what’s going on.
Commissioner Ahn struggles to get at Sung-il and accuses him of having orchestrated this. Sung-il’s incomprehension is obvious, but as he’s drawn away, Ahn promises to reveal everything about Sung-il’s activities to the police. Sometime later, Sung-il sits on a bench outside his department and Sung-hee calls him to ask if he’s all right. Sung-il promises to come to the office the next day and Sung-hee watches the raining money on TV with something like a smile in her eyes.
Hak-joo waits outside Madam Noh’s office building with his goons and Ja-wang. He calls Sung-il when he spots Madam Noh and Ji-yeon entering the building, and Sung-il heads out to meet them. Hak-joo and his men walk into the foyer carrying bats and rods (and a pig’s leg for Ja-wang), but they’re stopped by Ji-yeon and a dozen of Madam Noh’s men, who give them the option of turning back.
Hak-joo and his men laugh but Ja-wang decides to bolt, nearly breaking into tears as he runs out. The two gangs fight and Sung-il reaches to find Hak-joo and his goons sitting in a line with their arms in the air. Ji-yeon tells her men to let them go and invites Sung-il up to meet Madam Noh. Hak-joo looks a little miffed that Sung-il didn’t have to fight to get there.
Sung-il asks Madam Noh where Jung-do is, but she says she doesn’t know. He asks her why she betrayed them and Madam Noh takes exception to the word. She was following the direction of her chairman all this time, so she really hadn’t betrayed anyone. Madam Noh then tells Sung-il that though she doesn’t know where Jung-do is, there is someone who may.
She explains that when Jae-sung had imprisoned the crew and cornered Jung-do, a man had called to ask her to help. She tells Sung-il that her chairman is on Jung-do’s side but she is on Sung-il’s side because he is a good man. She turns on a recording and leaves the office. Sung-il listens, stunned, as Detective Deok-bae’s voice asks Madam Noh to help Jung-do. He’s Jung-do’s mysterious associate!
Sung-il arrives at Deok-bae’s police station and asks him if he remembers the file Deok-bae showed him with names of all of Jung-do’s targets. Sung-il says he looked into it and the hoobae whom Deok-bae had credited with unearthing that file didn’t exist.
Deok-bae looks completely guilty as Sung-il asks him what his relationship is with Jung-do. Deok-bae tries to take the conversation outside the station but Sung-il is too worked up. He shouts that Deok-bae is supposed to be his friend, not Jung-do’s, and punches Deok-bae in the face in front a room full of cops.
After the furor at the police station, the two old friends drink soju together. Deok-bae explains that Jung-do is the son of his mentor, Detective Yang. The two of them, along with Jae-sung, had once made a very good team. Then one day, Detective Yang told his teammates that he was afraid his wife was entangled in a pyramid scheme.
They began to investigate and uncovered a fraud worth millions with thousands of victims. But then President Bang put the blame on Detective Yang’s wife, and Jae-sung, the turncoat, falsely implicated his friend and partner in a bribery case.
A few months after that, Jae-sung caught Jung-do in the act of setting up a con that targeted Chairman Choi’s Woohyang Group. Deok-bae sounds almost admiring as he recalls how Jung-do adapted to the situation. Jung-do knew that if Jae-sung suspected that he had been trying to get revenge for his parents, Jae-sung would ensure he was put away for a very long time.
So instead, Jung-do pretended to be dense. When interrogated, he confessed targeting Woohyang because it was a rich mark, asking Jae-sung what other reason he could possibly have, and if making up one would shorten his sentence.
Sung-il speculates that Jung-do must have spent a lot of time planning his revenge in jail. He realizes that Jung-do didn’t mistake him for Section Chief Baek, but targeted him from the very beginning. He thinks back on the way Jung-do first approached him and how Deok-bae pushed Sung-il to accept to Jung-do’s offer to catch Ma Jin-seok. Sung-il surmises that Deok-bae delivered Sung-il straight into Jung-do’s lap, to help him with his revenge.
Deok-bae protests that while he did connect Sung-il to Jung-do, he did it to help them both. He points out that Sung-il had a grudge against President Bang too, and would often get drunk and plot ways to avenge Kim Min-sik’s death. But they all sound like excuses to Sung-il. He looks at Deok-bae with disappointment, and says that he shouldn’t have done this to him when they had been friends for so long. He promises Deok-bae that he’ll catch Jung-do no matter where he is.
A car drops Chairman Choi home. As he walks up the road, he senses something and his steps falter. But then he dismisses it and walks on. Parked close by, Jung-do tracks the movements of his next prey from the dark interiors of a car.
COMMENTS
We had already surmised that Jung-do was out to avenge his father; we just didn’t know the details. His story, though, is more heartbreaking than I had assumed. He lost his entire family to the machinations of a few greedy people and it understandably consumed Jung-do to the point where the trust of a man like Sung-il became collateral damage to his quest for vengeance. And I must say, I really enjoyed that vengeance when President Bang was forced to kneel and beg for his mercy. Hadn’t Bang called himself a dragon or something when it was Ma Jin-seok begging at his feet? Thought he was untouchable, eh? I loved it. I loved that Jung-do used money — the motivation behind President Bang’s every greedy action — and humiliated the man who carelessly threw away his parents’ lives to save his own skin. And then, knowing perfectly well that his groveling was insincere, Jung-do gave the order to dump $50 million on the streets of Seowon. I am not ashamed to say that I whooped a little.
Ah, poor Jung-do. To lose his parents and then to lose Sung-hee soon after. It seems likely that the office Sung-hee had walked into for a temp job the day they first met, had been set up by Jung-do to bring down Chairman Choi and President Bang in one massive swindle. I’m unsure about whether that was his first con, or if scamming people for small amounts had been something he did for fun before his world was upended. I can see how watching his innocent parents being dragged to jail would be the death knell of any moral compunctions he had before that day. And then to meet Sung-hee — someone who seemed so good and incorruptible — must have been quite a shake-up for his reality. It says a lot that Jung-do tried to shield her from that part of his life, and tried to have a normal relationship with her. I think at that point he still thought it was possible for him to have a future with Sung-hee once he proved his parents’ innocence and brought the real culprits to justice.
But then Jae-sung caught wind of his activities and locked him up. From Jung-do’s perspective there was no point in pretending that he could be normal and honest — everything he must have thought Sung-hee wanted. He was going off to jail for years, and had every intention of exacting his revenge once he got out. While I’m usually all for honesty in a relationship, it seems that Jung-do and Sung-hee had only recently begun dating, and I can see how Jung-do didn’t want to drag her into years of waiting till his plans could be put in motion. Because once he got out, it must have been clear to him that he would be risking everything to bring President Bang and Chairman Choi down. His innocence had died early.
As much as I weep for the rift between Jung-do and Sung-il, I think Deok-bae’s defection hurt Sung-il the worst. When a lifelong friend treats you like a disposable cog in someone else’s machine, it leaves a deep wound. All of Deok-bae and Jung-do’s justifiable reasons can’t excuse the fact that they used Sung-il. What makes me particularly angry on Sung-il’s behalf is that Deok-bae seemed to have assumed that Sung-il would never figure it out. Or not as quickly as he did. Despite Sung-il’s rage at President Bang for his brother-in-law’s death, he would never have willingly signed up to work outside the system. And no matter that this experience has helped him grow, it all started with lies from a friend. Which means that if Sung-il is to reclaim his agency in this story, he has to be a full partner to Jung-do and not a tool to be used at his convenience.
Sung-hee’s expression when she watched the money raining down on the TV stuck with me. Here’s a girl who’s most likely tread the moral path all her life. She’s obstinate in her determination to bring the villains down by using the force of the law, but I have yet to see her be judgmental about what Jung-do and Sung-il do. It has seemed to me for several episodes now that Sung-hee has a dry sense of humor that appreciates the cleverness of Jung-do’s cons. It’s the damage he could leave behind that she seems to really fear. Much like her own heartbreak, she worries that Sung-il will be left scarred by his friendship with Jung-do. And she’s right. Except that I think Jung-do has hurt himself just as much by betraying Sung-il and the crew.
He’s all alone now. Madam Noh has refused further help, Mi-joo is on the run, Hak-joo is out for his blood, and Ja-wang probably wants nothing to do with him anymore. Jung-do knew this would happen when he made that call to Sung-il and put his betrayal in motion. No matter his motive, he broke faith with his crew, and broke Mi-joo and Sung-il’s hearts. It seems to me that to bring President Bang down, Jung-do has left himself utterly vulnerable. His strength was the seamless teamwork of his friends. At this point, Jung-do could be spiraling into the worst phase of self-destructiveness by trying to go it alone.

Ah, now I can finally watch episode 11 with the recap out. I dunno why but I cannot watch this show without a recap. I feel like I'd miss too much from my constant FF and I just LOVE spoilers. I need to know everything going on beforehand lol
But aside from that, why didn't Jung Do donate the money? Or rain it down in a city that's poor? I'm not eloquent so bear with me but why rain it down on a street where it won't be, for a lack of a better word, appreciated? I'm sure the civilians loved the money but it won't be going to children's textbooks and other necessities? Am I making sense?
Also, so Sung Hee IS Mayor Chun's daughter? I hope they reveal more about her upbringing. And does that mean Jung Do didn't know she was Mayor Chun's daughter considering his vendetta? I'm so curios to see how he'll con Chairman Choi! Thanks for the recap!

I'm guessing donating an amount of money that large via official channels would lead to potential trouble for Jung-do and that's why he just let it rain. Plus he wanted some impact and boy did he get it!
If Sung-hee is Mayor Chun's daughter, I'm wondering how she ended up almost taking a pyramid scheme job (she would have, if it wasn't for Jung-do)

In the first (or maybe second) episode it was stated that the mayor used to work the same place as Sung il, that they were friends. The mayor's obviously moved up in the world quickly, backed by some powerful people. But when his daughter was a poor student, he wasn't that rich?

Maybe for some reason she didn't get along well with Mayor Chun at that time and wanted to break free from him and just become financially independent? Now that I think about it they do seem to have an awkward kind of relationship and it doesn't seem like a lot of people know that they are father and daughter. At some point I didn't think they had a father/daughter relationship but I think this episode is pretty clear on this matter.

Maybe, Jung Do needed to rain it down in a city to make a statement. Donating it to an orphanage might not have made the same impact. Don't forget that he's mostly motivated by revenge and not by the desire to help others.

Was I the only one who thought of Liar Game at that scene? Like, sure, when our Jung-do does it it's vindicating, but when our favorite crazypants MC Do-young wants to do it, we all thought he was nuts. I like to think he's out there somewhere in this universe, watching this all go down

I also wonder if it didn't have something to do with making a big, public fuss that all the bigwigs wouldn't be able to cover up? Leading to more revenge-satisfying consequences? Because Prez Bang and family didn't just lose their money, they were caught in their pyramid company and sent to jail too! Not to mention all the other tax office people (like deputy Ahn, *fistpump!*) that went down with the Bangs. Could Jung-do have foreseen all of that too?

Good point about Jung-do's motivation - above all else, he's in this to screw the bad guys over and even his team comes second to that. *sob*
@Jess - that scene of deputy Ahn getting led away and going HAM on Sung-ilm is going down as one of my favourites in the series. He's thrived on cold self-control so far, and seeing him lose it is glorious. Hoist by his own petard, indeed! (I mean, sure he's there because Chairman Choi decided he was tired of him, but still)

Oh gods I thought petard was some kind of leotard so everytime I read "Hoist by your own petard" I imagined it was like getting a wedgie. HAHAHAHAHA the image of Ahn getting one was O______O
(I just googled the actual meaning and apparently petard was some sort of bomb/trap thing)

And here I was thinking that petard is the wrong spelling for a politically inappropriate word. Though I was still left wondering how even the correct spelling would have made sense. And then I actually went and looked up idioms, because I wanted to understand if it meant being caught by your own stupidity. Turns out I was just thinking too much.
SO now DB has even become a platform to learn new words and idioms. :D

@ObsessedMuch - much as I would love to be cool enough to have used that phrase unprompted, I must confess it was brought to my attention during discussions of the recent shenanigans surrounding a certain singer being outed as a liar about the content of her conversation with a certain Mr. Kanye West, and her knowledge of a song he wrote. The wording is weird but I think it's the con money.
What they meant about the "it's Chairman's money" is Chairman is their backer so technically, anything they earn should only be dispensed according to Chairman's wishes.

The last two episodes preceeding this one have been heavily suggesting it, given that Comissioner Ahn interrogated Sunghee about her involvement in the scam and later on confirmed her possible involvement to the Mayor when he asked if she's involved. Ahn hasn’t ever seen Mijoo in any of the episodes so that entire conversation wouldn’t make if she were the daughter they were referring to.

He rained it down because if it was all used in one chunk like paying the tax arrears or donating to a good cause, the city and people working there were corrupt enough that BPG could get it all back.
On the other if thrown away like that, nobody knows who got how much and recouping would be impossible.

I agree that it should have been rained down on poor, less civilized cities (though I wonder if the point is to get immediate media coverage?).
anyway, I also think that Jung-Do is making a statement when he decides to throw out the money. It's a way of devaluing something that the bad guys cherish and protect the most.

To me, actually Jung Do could have saved his friendship with the team members and at the same time had his revenge on Bang Pil Gyu.
He could have asked Mdm Noh to keep 10% of that $50 million and throw the rest to off the buildings. It is not like anybody could really count the amount the actual amount that was being thrown. So many people picked up the money from the streets.
The 10% could be divided among his team members for their role in the scam. That way his team would not feel betrayed.
Aaaaargh..... writer nim... why do you have to make Jung Do mean like that..???

I don't think Deokbae meant to betray his friend, I think he really thought he was helping them both out by hooking them up to fight a common enemy. I can't think that he foresaw Jungdo throwing $50 million off a building, lol. (Is it wrong to wish I was there to catch some of it?) It was super smart of JD to think of throwing that money away, it was the only way that Bang could not possibly get it back.
I didn't like his conversation with Noh -- that he wouldn't call her until he was dying. Why would you say something like that, Jungdo? :-( It better not be foreshadowing.
Thanks for the recap!

Oh no that is not a twist I would like. At all. Please show, keep everyone away from death's door (or the truck of doom- a favourite trope in kdramas).
There is a saying in Hindi- "shubh shubh bolo" which basically means "speaks only that which is good/ auspicious"! So lets just say that Jung Do is gonna live a long long life but also work with Madam Noh without giving us heart attacks.

Thanks for catching up with the show festerfaster :)
This episode had me going through a range of emotions and all of them the result of ups and downs they took us through. I raged at Bang, cried with Jung Do, felt betrayed with Sung Il, felt pity for Jung Do for all that he has gone through and all that he has had to do because of it.
But the best scene perhaps was the coolness with which Madam Noh gave the orders to dump the money and the literal windfall on street. It was one of the most impressive scenes that I have ever scene in kdramas (and I have seen many kdramas) and I had goosebumps while watching it. Hats off to the writers and the crew of the show.
Seo In Guk is killing me in this show. I mean I already loved him since Savvy, and was enamored in IRY, but he has crossed that invisible boundary of restraint for me. He is just so natural with his acting that I did not even for one moment see him as anything other than Young Do. It obviously helps that he is incredibly sexy. I have loved many korean actors but SIG has climbed his way right at the top on my list.

That money-dump scene was absolutely glorious, and it was even better knowing that Jung-do actually did cut the snake where it hurt after getting that fake apology out of him (and the patient but I'm-not-playing reminders about using jondaemal and proper honorifics, I love it).
But I loved the shots just before they dumped the money too, when I had no clue that that was what Jung-do was planning to have Madame Noh do and was just wondering 'huh why are they on top of a building?!'. So good. Just so, so, so good.
SIG stuck himself firmly in my favourites list the minute I saw him making puppy eyes at Jung Eunji, so seeing how far he's come since (and just how good an actor he is) makes me feel like a proud mom. He's easily among the best actors in the late-80s age group, I can think of only maybe two actors out of that currently popular lot who have a prayer of matching him.

Yeah, the scenes right before the windfall were awesome! I had this strange feeling that they might dump it but I couldn't believe that they would do such an awesome thing!
Also, to be specific I saw SIG in Master's Sun first, then I looked up Savvy cuz I wanted to see more of his work, and THEN I came to AM97. I was already sold on his skills by then.
And can I guess the two actors- Lee Jong Suk and Park Bo Gum (atleast, they are my favourites).

I thought by saying "out of that currently popular lot", you meant to include every young popular actor working right now. Who were your two then? Ji Chang Wook? He is after-all SIG's close friend- but I have just seen and loved him in one show.
pogo
July 26, 2016 at 9:44 PM
Nah, I meant out of the '87-89er lot, particularly the '87ers - the pool would definitely expand by quite a bit if you had 90s babies like Kang Haneul or Park Bo-gum in there :)
My two were Ji Chang-wook and Im Shi-wan - they've also taken a wide range of roles, though no one is quite as chameleonic as SIG so far.
(this is not to say that they're the only good actors in that age range, just the ones who've stood out most to me in recent years)
ObsessedMuch
July 26, 2016 at 9:54 PM
I had actually forgotten Im Shi Wan, having seen him in only one show. Same as Ji Chang Wook. Buty yeah they are good, though not as good as SIG yet, and truth be told, it would be hard to catch up now. For me the one who comes a little close is Lee Jong Suk
pogo
July 26, 2016 at 10:18 PM
Lee Jong-seok is a champ at emoting, and really selling you on everything he's feeling onscreen. Still not forgotten his scenes with Yoon Kyun-sang in Pinocchio, boy did those two make me want to cry (and of course, no need to mention School 2013, that bromance is iconic).
He (and Yoon Doo-joon) would be my honorary mention if his roles were slightly more varied, though W looks like it could change that since his character doesn't feel anything like the ones he played in School 2013/IHYV/DS/Pinocchio. Though I did love his turn as a small-town Casanova in Hot-Blooded Youth, he was adorable in that.
ObsessedMuch
July 26, 2016 at 11:29 PM
The School 2013 bromance is epic for sure. I was rewatching the RM episode where both Woo Bin and Jong Suk came together, and I really miss them on my screen. I mean I miss their bromance, because they are on my screen, just way apart and competing for affection.
And yes to Jong Suk's emoting skills. He sure knows how to make a girl cry.

LJS is an actor who tends to bring out the best in his costars, both male and female - and given that KWB is one whose abilities tend to reflect on his costars, they couldn't have been a more perfect pair.
Of course, now that they're each superstars in their own right, we'll probably never get to see them share a screen like that again - the trick to a successful bromance seems to involve casting compatible young actors at just the point when they aren't yet huge enough to lead a drama series on their own. Because after they hit it big....bye-bye it goes. Which is a shame because so many of them are really great together, the status game just ruins potential greatness.
I mean, I would kill for repeats of LJS/KWB, LJS/SIG (No Breathing was not a project worthy of either of them) or Lee Won-geun/Ji-soo but I'm not holding my breath (ha ha) on that.
pogo
July 27, 2016 at 12:45 AM
And personally, I would love to see LJS take on a negative role - there were moments in IHYV when I felt like he'd make an absolutely fantastic psycho.
And looking at how well the likes of Yoo Ah-in, Ji Chang-wook, Im Shi-wan, Jo Boa, Kang Haneul, Lee Joon etc pull it off, I feel like it'd help him break new ground as an actor if he wasn't playing a character we're meant to sympathise with.

"I would love to see LJS take on a negative role – there were moments in IHYV when I felt like he’d make an absolutely fantastic psycho."
You are so right. He could make a great villain, because he does sometimes get that unhinged look in his eyes. It is the NamGoongMin look, or should I say the Park Bo Gum look too. I wonder if they could actually turn the story of "W" to him playing an almost villainous character. It would be superb indeed.
From the names you took, I only know about Haneul's negative role, could you tell me the names of others' projects?
And yes to the bromance bit. Its like a strategy by the kdrama writers and directors, perhaps even the agency owners. Because with an awesome bromance, the show is sure to soar and the careers of the 2 actors is sure to rise too. I dunno why it works but it sure does.
pogo
July 27, 2016 at 4:22 AM
@ObsessedMuch - exactly, you know the look I mean - if the story of IHYV had actually chosen to have him go completely unhinged at that point, I'd have bought it 100 percent.
The 'actors with negative roles' rollcall runs as follows (and this is just the ones I can name off the top of my head, minus the Min/Haneul/Bo-gum trifecta ofc)
Yoo Ah-in - Veteran
Kang Dong-won - Kundo (seriously he gave me shivers, he was TERRIFYING)
Ha Jung-woo - The Chaser (also terrifying, I put the lights back on at some points)
Lee Min-ki - Monster
Ji Chang-wook - Five Fingers (he and Joo Ji-hoon are great but don't bother watching this please, it was bad and 30 hours long)
Im Shi-wan - Equator Man, Triangle
Jo Boa - Innocent Thing
Lee Joon - Gap-dong
Lee Soo-hyuk - Scholar Who Walks the Night
Lee Sung-kyung - Cheese in the Trap
Sue Ae - Yawang
Also debatable inclusion on the 'negative' front but worth noting - Park Hae-jin in Bad Guys and Cheese in the Trap - an ambiguously negative protagonist/ protagonist with acknowledged negative aspects is a VERY difficult thing to pull off, and he did it, sometimes even against the script and PD hobbling him.
All of the above are really well-played roles imo, and like I said - I feel it shows us a different side of them as actors, and not just in Korea, I mean look at Tom Hiddleston as Loki! I'd love to see SIG take up a villain role himself, he'd kill it and we'd be tearing ourselves in two trying not to fall for him.
The bromance thing..... it only works when there's genuine chemistry between the actors imo - something that can be as tricky and hard to fake as romantic chemistry. I mean, they tried it in Heirs with the rivals/bromance angle and I wasn't feeling it at all.
pogo
July 27, 2016 at 4:26 AM
Oh, and I forgot - Go Kyung-pyo in Coin Locker Girl! He was so sleazy there, it was a total 180 to playing sweet Sun-woo in 1988 (and the Sun-woo/Taek bromance is definitely one of the epic ones of 2015, the other two being the kids from Sassy Go Go and of course, our psycho brothers from IRY)
ObsessedMuch
July 27, 2016 at 6:47 AM
@pogo Out of all the names you mentioned I have seen Lee Soo-hyuk as Gwi and for me he was the only good thing about the show. On the other hand, Lee Sung-kyung in CITT was too screechy and over- the- top to qualify as a good villain. Park Hae-jin in Bad Guys and Cheese was downright amazing.
I too would love to see SIG as a villain. He has the acting chops down to play anything. I mean he was hate-able enough in the first few episodes of IRY.
Surprisingly, I felt the bromance in Heirs. I mean the romance was shitty as hell. And I might just be a biased KWB fan, but he is a pro at bromance and one- sided romance. (though he hasn't done that many shows). Obviously LMH wasn't all there emotionally, but I guess KWB acted out the bromance thing between them well enough on his own. Heirs was a train wreck, but I am still thankful to it for introducing me to Woo Bin.

July 27, 2016 at 8:11 AM
Lee Sung-kyung at the start of Cheese would never have been on anyone's best of list, but somewhere in the second half, she toned down the extreme screechiness and started really killing it.
The show did some very stupid things to make her the villain but I have to hand it to her for committing to that and going all-out - once she actually became the villain, she was great.
As for Scholar, it got a better cast than it deserved, all around, but Lee Soo-hyuk being the standout came as the real surprise to me - I remember jokes in the recap about how he was channelling Alan Rickman, Tom Hiddleston and Dracula lol.

Butting in to mention that Lee Jong Suk and Seo In Guk actually have the film No Breathing, which turned out to be a big production disappointment. Cough cough.
Can Yoo Yeon Seok qualify in this age rage? Good gracious that guy has skills! If not for his height, i'd love to see him in a square off with SIG. Lee Joong Ki is promising. But yes, Im Si Wan is a definite favorite. I'd like to see him in more varied roles though.

I have seen No Breathing. It was a major disappointment in terms of the story and direction. I must say that SIG shined there too.. LJS was under utilized as far as i remember. I liked Yoo Yeon Seok in AM94 and Werewolf Boy, but Warm & Cozy was such a fail (thank God Woo Bin said no to that).
And if we are taking in 1983-84 born, then I would rather prefer Jung Kyung Ho! Now that guy has some solid skills. And he can emote as well, if not better, as SIG.

YYS is amazing, and the years spent playing villains probably honed his skills beautifully - but he's an '84 baby, not late 80s like the ones I referred to. There's a ton of male lead talent born in the early-mid 80s, really.

This drama will be the death of me, I swear.
So we're finally getting more pieces of Jung-do's past - it's heartbreaking to know the real reason why he's chucked all the ethics playbooks out the window. And the reveal at this stage makes it far more effective and poignant than if we'd known it from the start, which would have made him come off as just another bad boy with a tragic backstory, like every kdrama hero ever (and no, having cancer is not an absolution for acting like an ass to a girl you like!). But holding most of it back and letting us first get to know Jung-do as he is now, means the punch lands harder when we learn just how hard losing his parents and then Sung-hee hit him. Last week, I was scared that our team was going to be broken up by treachery - well, this week does actually break our team up, even if Jung-do does it himself.
And I think my jaw hit the floor when we got the Deok-bae reveal. No wonder Sung-il went for his throat - Jung-do conning him is one thing, but his best friend? And the worst of it was the knowledge that he was set up from Day 1 - yes, Deok-bae wants his friend to get his money back and take down the bad guys but I feel like Sung-il would have been less heartbroken if he hadn't strung him along and just told him the truth.

I've said it before on OT, but tonally, this drama really is an odd mix of two of the best dramas of the last two years - the muted weariness of Misaeng

Didn't see the Detective's connection yo JD!.
When Chairman Choi mentioned about 'cutting' off the tail n we see the Bangs and the corrupt tax guys carted off by poluce - the saying comes to mind: 'you lie with dogs; you get fleas.‘

Haha, yes, we love it when Gukkie breathes. :-)
I like a lot of actors who are very cute and very talented, but somehow only SIG turns me into a 12-year-old fangirl.

Seriously, making this a two-lead show was the best decision ever. I just realised MDS and SIG don't share even a second of screentime this ep other than the flashbacks to earlier episodes, but they're great individually as well as together - even if it huuuuurts that poor Sung-il has been burned. But it's really the perfect casting - you get Ma Dong-seok the teddy bear to root for and SIG to keep you intrigued, what more could a girl ask for?
And the whole cast is so perfect, not a single one of them is lacking in any way, they're perfect in their roles. It's not often we get to see casting this solid.

I wish I could write something super clever about this drama but then all of the emotions I had after watching each eps felt like had sucked up all of my energy lol.

Oh thanks for these links. These videos were beautiful. Its sad that SIG and Sooyoung have so few scenes together and there is so little romance. But it is videos like these that give more depth to their story!

Trust. No. One.
Fox Mulder couldn´t watch this show at all.
if you can be bought, you can be thrown away, I think is the moral we can take from here. No matter how untouchable you think you are.
awesome, that you have caught up, pheef! Finally I don´t have to hold back and clench my teeth and suffer. I am already suffering because of those writers.
did you all know there is an official Instagram for Squad 38?

many pictures could be spoilers in themselves, mind you.

When the mayor say to Sung II that he should stop doing that and all, Sung II say that he receives the same advice from "some Ms Chun", from the office. The way he said "some Ms. Chun" its evident he dont know she is the daughter of the mayor. I think she dont know about that too.
He is a absent parent and try compensate his absense and not existence with this job and all.
She dont get that job in telemarketing because maybe Jung Do dont wanna trick her and maybe she got this job because mayor want be good to his daughter.
So, Jung Do dont trick her, the real coin man in her life is the mayor, her father.
