News bites: June 18, 2016

Choi Min-shik, Park Shin-hye

  • Park Shin-hye (in upcoming Doctors) is positively considering joining Choi Min-shik in Silence (a working title), a remake of the Chinese film Silent Witness. In the legal thriller about a chaebol daughter who gets accused of killing her father’s fiance, Choi will play the chaebol, while Park would play his daughter’s lawyer. Director Jung Ji-woo (Eungyo) and Choi Min-shik are currently holding open auditions for the role of the daughter, and filming will begin after casting of the supporting roles is complete. [Star News, Osen]
  • Hyun Bin has confirmed the movie Conman, in which he’ll set up a one-time con in order to catch a notorious crook. Yoo Ji-tae (next in The Good Wife) has been offered the role of a corrupt prosecutor. Filming hasn’t begun yet, but Hyun Bin has another film, Alliance, coming out shortly. And waaait a minute, we could play six degrees of Lee Dong-hwi, below. [Osen]

  • Hyun Bin, Yoo Ji-tae, Lee Dong-hwi

  • Aww, maybe this will compensate a bit for not being able to go to Africa with his Answer Me buddies: Youths Over Flowers in Iceland castmates Jung Woo and Kang Haneul are confirmed for Retrial, and now Lee Dong-hwi (Answer Me 1988) has joined the film about a real-life murder of a taxi driver and the corruption that put an innocent youth behind bars. Cameras for Retrial start rolling in mid-July. [Osen]
  • Like its HBO predecessor, Korea’s Entourage will feature a slew of fun cameos. Set in the entertainment world, the show has already confirmed guest spots from Song Ji-hyo (Ex-Girlfriend Club), director Lee Jun-ik, and girl group MAMAMOO. The Korean remake will be 100% pre-produced and will air on tvN in the latter half of the year. [Joongang 1, 2]

  • Song Ji-hyo, Lee Jun-ik

  • Signal Pictures has announced that they’ve obtained the rights to turn MBC’s currently airing Lucky Romance into a movie. A script is being modified, with filming to begin in the first half of 2017. It’s very early in the process, and no directors or actors have been courted yet. [Osen]
  • Seo Eun-chae (Cheongdam-dong Scandal) is returning to the small screen with 1% of Anything. Cast as the daughter of a chaebol group, she’s also Ha Suk-jin’s plucky and proud ex-fiance, and she’ll battle it out with Jeon So-min to stay at Ha Suk-jin’s side. The remake of the 2003 drama starring Kang Dong-won and Kim Jung-hwa will be fully pre-produced and will air later this year in Korean, Chinese, U.S. and Japanese markets. [Sports Worldi]

  • Seo Eun-chae, Park Eun-ji, Park Ji-young

  • Jealousy Incarnate has recruited real-life weathercaster Park Eun-ji (Please, Mom) to join the ranks of its fictional broadcast station; she was offered a weathercaster role after consulting on the project. Park Ji-young (Tears of Heaven) is also confirmed to play an announcer, and there’s no love lost between her and Lee Mi-sook’s character. Both women started at the station at the same time and have been rivals ever since. They somehow fall for the same man, a chef (Lee Sung-jae), and they’ll all end up living in the same villa, which’ll lead to some tense and hilarious situations. Jealousy Incarnate will follow Wanted on SBS. [Joongang, Osen]
  • Yay for tvN’s hit show Signal, which is turning into a bona fide hit in China as well. Signal became available in China on April 18 via a Tencent premium channel, and it’s now amassed over 165 million views. Regarding the success, Kim Won-seok PD said, “My previous work, Misaeng, also received compliments from China but at the time, they were more along the lines of, ‘It was a good show. I enjoyed it.’ This time, [Chinese audiences] are responding as if Signal is a masterpiece, and I’m both embarrassed and quite shocked by the reaction.” [Yonhap, Sports Chosun]

I'm not watching Lucky Romance at the moment (I just read the recaps), but it seems to me that it actually would function better as a movie.

But the ratings are barely average. So what compelled them to turn it into a movie ? I can understand making a movie out of a run away hit show, but this is strange

I think the point is just what OP said: it would work much better as a movie. I don't think this move is to harness the popularity of the currently-airing drama. Sometimes production companies choose to transform something into a different form of media because of its potential to be the best version of itself. That seems like the clear objective here.

I heard PSH already met with the director and producers, so I feel like it's all but official, we'll just have to wait until her drama is over to get the official confirmation. This means she'll have a drama and two movies out this year...damn.

Anyway, this is such a great offer for her, a high profile thriller movie with her as the female lead, and with one of the most respected actors out there...I mean it doesn't get any better than that in terms of upping your profile in the industry.

honestly, I'm a PSH fan but you could say the exact same thing for people basically going to war with other commenters to defend the abilities of an actress that doesn't know they exist.

I mean, what are you even getting out of it? At least complainers get to vent and get something off their chests.

I enjoy both forms of messiness. They're equally entertaining whether someone is being super defensive or venting about how much they hate a certain actor or actress.

Moral of the story, people like arguing and trying to prove they are right.

This is exciting for drama actors no matter who they are. It's a golden opportunity even if the role is small like "Miracle in Cell No. 7". Ryu Seung-ryong maybe be a notch below Choi Min Shik but his name and talents is big enough in Chungmuro. Park Shin-hye at least did not waste that opportunity unlike a certain idol actress.

I am in full support of this pairing. You can't go wrong with acting alongside the best leading men of Chungmuro, Choi Min Shik, Song Kang Ho, Ha Jung Woo, Hwang Jung Min, Kim Yoon Seok.

0

The amount of critiscms and loves received by PSH just show how much popular she is. I hope she receives this offer. This is very good opportunity.

0

@ Sera The Ms Temper: PSH agency confirmed she received the offer. She even met up with the production and Director to discuss about the offer.
Now it's up to her to accept it or not. But we probably have to wait until Doctors finish.

I don't get why they are making Lucky Romance into movie. Actors are great, they also have chemistry, I dislike directing and script but it isn't that bad to do remake (like it was Cheese in the trap case), it's also not a masterpiece and not a ratings monster...so why?

I think that it's not the same case of CITT where they decided to turn it into a movie after the drama ended because so many fans were angry with the ending ( I read they were angry because the ending is not good, I dropped the drama so I'm don't know if it was good or bad for real I only know what I read and I read that)

With LR it's different. It's not a remake to correct what the drama did wrong, they are also turning it into a movie so soon because they may think it's a good project and want to use it more.

It's true that LR is not a ratings monster but there are only good comments by knetz now and it's always top search on Naver when a new episode comes out so I think I'm not wrong to say that the drama is doing well now and that must be the reason why they want to also do a movie.

I think Lucky Romance is turned into a movie because they want to make another version different with the drama. The quirky hilarious ver and closer to the webtoon ver. Since what the drama is doing right now is the melodrama ver.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yea I'm quite surprised too. If they want to remake, they should completely remake the original source material, and not modify the script (which is also strange, since the drama is not even over, so even the drama's script itself isn't set in stone yet)

Happy for psh for receiving such a great offer. If she accepts this then it'll be her first time playing one of the main roles and not the supporting one aside Evil Twin (near 10yrs ago). I really hope people here will reserve their judgements on her till doctors arrives. It's said tht hye jung is her greatest challenge ever since and she really tries her best

She has never lead a movie aside evil twin (i dont count in short film) and she said the reason is because she doesnt think she's capable to bring in audiences to watch her movie yet. I dont consider her as female lead in Hyung though because it's obviously focuses on jo jung suk and d.o. characters

Aww it's sad that she thinks that. But also great that at her popularity level, she's still willing to work side character roles with great sunbaes like RSR and CMS.

Hopefully, she'll be confident enough to take a lead role in future.

ikr tht is one of her qualities tht i admire; humble. the thing she said tht leading a drama is different from leading a movie since people need to go out and pay to watch the movie is really true. movie leads need to have enough star power and great acting skills aside great script and directing to attract audiences. she knows her capabilities and where she stands :)

0

She has my respect for her willingness and ungreediness to take the lead role in movies. Working with sunbaes esp in chungmuro are much better at first, she can learn a lot. She is still young and have a plenty of time. I rather see her as a supporting role in a successful movies, than the unsuccesful. This may not welcomed by her loyal fans, but I wish after Doctors she will stay in chungmuro for a while before coming back to dramalnd.

0

She is also being realistic. She has been in the entertainment industry long enough to understand the difference between film stars and hallyu stars, film actors and drama actors, popularity and raw talents, fan critics and film critics.

It takes way more and longer to make it in the film industry and there is already a few actresses in her age group or younger who already make their mark like Kim Go-Eun, Shim Eun-Kyung, Park Bo-young, Park So-Dam, Ko Ah-Sung, Moon Geun-Young and the new comers like Lee Yoo-Young, Kim Tae-ri etc.
It's going to be tough to compete with these girls.

0

Shinhye is actually very humble and she knows her weaknesses very well, and never have diva disease even she is considered one of the most popular actress.
You can see how much the PD in her new drama adore her... at the Press Conference- saying she is what God make with the best thing
And she accept MRICN7 just to work with more seniors and she likes the roles. She is quite insecure when it comes to Chungmuro and I don't blame her.
If she accepted the role in Silent, it's be her 1st leading role since she became an adult- along side with 2 other lead role, based on the original

0

She's generally taken more supporting roles in movies, but some of her more interesting work has come from Chungmuro - I really liked her in Cyrano Dating Agency.

Drama is what keeps the money coming in though.

0

She is building up her resume in Chungnuro slowly but surely. She has average 1 movie per year along with dramas.
The thing is she is one of the Top Hallyu star and that's where her star power stands, also where the money is.
I bet you she makes a lot more with dramas than movies, with all the international right purchasing and all the endorsement/PPL deal in the dramas.
It's ideal that she can keep going strong in both like she is doing right now.

0

The type of roles taken up by Shinhye have always been different from the ones in the drama. Irrespective of the screen time....she has enacted diverse characters and the ones where she could show a different side of her as an actress. Cyrano Agency, MOR7, Hyung etc.

I am quiet sure that she will accept this offer but right now is focused on her drama Doctors.

I can never forget the famous Golden Lion Awards winner - Director Kim Ki-duk (“Pieta’s producer and PD) comment on Shinhye....
“ The Gift of Room 7” starts from Park Shin Hye & ends with Park Shin Hye - the recent most glamorous actress & perhaps South Korea’s top actress with unshakable position in near future! "

Director Kim Ji Woon iconic Korean Director of international fame says,
"Park Shin Hye's actress with talent and charms. Especially her eyes, they are so beautiful. I am curious about what she can express with her eyes.I know well before I met her saw those potentials in her"

Lee Won Suk director Royal Tailor,
"I really want to work with her, in the future. I think that a lot of Korean directors want to work with her.
Park Shin Hye is the future of Korean actresses. There is a gap between the older actresses or ahjummas and the young stars who are following. She has the potential to have a long run as an actress....She knows how to make you feel something when you watch her......a natural beauty .....a great face."

It says a lot for an actress if renowned directors think so highly of her.

Wow! Amazed about what notable directors and even seasoned actors say about their impressions of her. Hopeful that she accepts the role. It's funny how for the last 3 years, we get a hint of who the next actor paired with her.... Remember Lee Jung Suk interacting and being seen on screen with her during the SBS awards night, then Kim Rae Won, now we hear about this great actor next on the line
Who we saw in her view during last year's awards night ?

Love love Signal, it captivated my attention from the first episode. The actors were so good! It didn't matter if there was no actual romance, it was better being bittersweet! Compared to the popular DOTS, have yet to finish first episode, hopefully I can!

Don't forget renting a Rooftop Apartment as well; the more steps to get up there, the better. Preferably with a spectacular view of the Hangang and a fab greenhouse thrown in for good measure, so the chaebol can visit in order to get away from all his chaebol troubles.

Eventually you'll come down with an incurable disease from living in such cold and drafty squalor... but on your deathbed, tell the world that you were a rich heiress all along and leave your fortune to help other Candy Girls obtain their own Rooftop Apartments. :P

But still, think about all the emotional turmoil you will have to undergo after meeting you fated one? Here you are ..a cold prickly, unemotional person who thinks girls are either a)Frivolous, flighty playthings or b)Heartless, demonic creatures who will be unwillingly (if not immediately) smitten when the love of your life appears..
And also you have to fight off the ever present sweet, gentle, swoonworthy, manly man/men (in the form of the second male lead/s) from getting THE girl.Furthermore, there is also this utterly obsessive, wealthy chaebol heiress (in the form of the second female lead) who is engaged to you and who must-be-got-rid of if you are ever to pursue the path of eternal love.

You will of course be oppressed heavily by your family on learning the matters of your heart. Your parents may cut off your money, credit cards, cars, apartments, job, pretty suits and even your laptop( K-dramas for you m'boy) and you will end up being the poorest of poor (no more Rubik's cubes either)

Last but not least mentioning the physical , you will also have to carry a very drunken young lady** on your back for a considerable distance, ON FOOT. If the said young lady lives on a rooftop (which is normally accessible via a long, narrow dimly lit flight of stairs)....then good luck to you :D

**She may have thrown up on your shirt and may have drooled on your back while you were transporting her to her abode*

Perhaps being the family ghost in a chaebol household might be better..Think of all the shower scenes one could enjoy :D

+100,
I would like Bo Nui a lot better if she was just a fortune obsessed crazy girl instead of being clinically depressed. She doesn't need Suho, she needs a shrink and possibly needs to be committed seeing that she is also suicidal. And I am not being sarcastic, I know a few depression cases with suicidal tendencies personally and her character scares me. I don't know why the writers of the show thought that the suicidal though angle could make the tension better, it made me scared for her instead, is it a laughing matter, Hell No! Its a damn serious shit. First I saw them using it in Heart to Heart and now in this. I don't know why they use this so lightly. It makes me mad at the writers, write with some responsibility and with some sense of reality. Don't just write shit for no reason as if its nothing.

A sequel to the Investigator Alice (/Detective Alice) webdrama is coming up. The two main actors, Jo Dong Hyuk and Namjoo (APink) will star again. FT Island's guitarist/rapper Seunghyun will join for his first drama, after making the transition from stage to screen with the movie The Youth (2015).

The original webdrama has received a lot of critique it seems, but Seunghyun has starred in several musicals and did so well in his onscreen debut that I can't wait to see him evolve as an actor, even if it's in something like this :) All FT Island members are pretty decent actors (except Jonghoon, he really should stick to music, cause Prince's Prince will forever make me cringe lol), but except Hongki, Seunghyun is the only one of them I've seen with any potential to be labeled a "real" actor instead of just an "idol-actor".

Still no date for when it'll air, but some of the FTI members have shared the poster on SNS, so it can't be too far off, I guess.

Yup, Signal's recognition--commercially AND critically--in China is no joke.

Douban is the Chinese version of Rotten Tomatoes / Imdb, where enthusiasts flock to rate TV shows, movies, music, and books. On the Douban popularity rank board, Signal has literally hovered in the top for weeks and weeks now.

Here's a list of recent K-dramas that have ranked high on the popularity rank board, along with their critical scores (out of 10 ... generally anything with a score of 7 is considered so-so in quality, while anything in the 9s is considered a critical success):

Signa l- 9.2
Oh Hae Young Again - 8.7
Dear My Friends - 9.3
Answer Me 1998 - 9.3
Descents of the Sun - 7.8
Misaeng - 9.3
Lucky Romance - 7.5
Cheese in the Trap - 7.6
M (ocn) - 9.0
Entertainer - 6.9

The above are the 10 most discussed and voted for kdramas of this month. Misaeng is amazing for remaining high on the list, despite having aired two years ago. Others like DotS may be an overwhelming commercial success, but isn't necessarily considered quality material. Dear My Friends may not be drawing in huge ratings in Korea, but Chinese viewers love it and consider it a wonderfully written show.

8.4

So Chinese viewers consider it a much better show than Descendants of the Sun, but still a head below the 9s shows like Signal, Nine: Nine Time Traveling Tales (9.0), Misaeng, Answer Me 1988, Dear My Friends etc.

In general, kdramas that receive ratings above 9 are the ones that overcome romantic tropes to become something more thought-provoking and meaningful than just another OTP celebration.

But popular/crack romcoms have received high ratings as well:

It's Okay It's Love - 8.5
I hear your voice - 8.6
Healer - 8.5
Coffee Prince - 8.0
Best Love - 8.3

Basically all the tightly written romantic kdramas that have been hugely popular have a rating around or above 8. None have broken the 9 mark, while the lackluster ones gets scores like these:

Heirs - 6.8
In Time with You k-version - 5.8
Hyde, Jekyll, and Me - 6.2
Woolim School - 5.3
Madame Antonine - 6.2

Pretty interesting to know about China's RT version. That's
good ranking. I'd rank Misaeng a notch over Signal too. Is it done by critics like RT or fans?
I wonder if "Heard it through the Grapevine" got a review there?

I go to RT before Imdb. Box Office Mojo used to be a really good hangout site for movie geeks until the owner got rid of the public forums:(. Still go there for box office numbers and that's about it.

I think it's a mix of professional critics and fans/viewers. But because the site encompasses several mediums and nearly all genres, it gathers votes from a reliably large and diverse demographic, so the ratings levels out to a point where it becomes fairly reliable.

For example, to put things in perspective, on the same site top American shows also receive critical ratings reflective of their quality:

Breaking Bad - 9.5
Modern Family - 9.3
Big Bang theory - 8.7
Better Call Saul - 9.4
The Good Wife - 9.3
The Walking Dead - 9.0
Sense8 - 8.7
How to get away with Murder - 8.7
Mad Men - 9.4

.....and

The Vampire Diaries - 6.7 LOL

Anyway I used to think Chinese viewers on a whole are less critically sharp as overseas or Korean audiences. Admittedly this view was formed on the culturally and economically prejudiced view that Chinese pop culture was inferior to that of Korea and Japan's. That and I assumed because of the political atmosphere in China, ordinary citizens were maybe blocked from having the kind of diversity of thinking required to have a critical mind.

I started learning Chinese in university and visited Douban to improve my language skills. And oh boy, did the site change my previous prejudices! On a macro level, Chinese viewers have great taste. In fact, douban's ratings system seem no different than if it were put together by a bunch of liberal arts college educated students.

For example, of the three Answer Me series, most folks at Dramabeans would rank 97 first and 88 last. On Douban, 88 is ranked first and 94 last. Many reviews of 88 were full of praise for the show's cultural and social commentary, innovative storytelling techniques, and generosity in the depiction of human kindness and love.

Thank you so much for the explanation:). Fairly reliable, I like that. There is a middle ground between professional critics and the viewers. They are separated on RT.

If I want to watch a movie or a show I'd watch it regardless of the profession critics' review but it helps me with the what to expect, when to see it and how often.

"Heard It through the Grapevine" has a collective score of 8.3 on Douban I believe 1,417 people rated the drama.

Out of the works by Ahn Pan-seok and writer Jung Sung-joo, "A Wife's Credentials" and "Secret Love Affair" both have a score of 8.6. However, "Secret Love Affair was rated by 8,403 people while "A Wife's Credentials" only had 268 people giving it a score. I guess "Secret Love Affair" is their most popular work in China.

I go on Weibo regularly and I've been very happy to see Signal being so well-received. Signal's success is an example of the power of word-of-mouth. Because Signal was only streamed to paid users on Teng Xun (unlike DOTS on Iqiyi, which was free), and Signal's main leads are Chungmuro actors who have lower popularity in China, Signal wasn't doing well initially. But fortunately as people started recommending to their friends on Weibo and giving top ratings for it on Douban, people started noticing it and watching it. It also helps that Lee Je-hoon happened to guest on Running Man at that time, which is still widely watched in China. Anyway, I'm so glad for Signal's success. Now, when are we getting Season 2 with the original cast?

TVN dramas surely rocks. I like all, except Misaeng and Reply 88 ( I was not able to finish them, there was something that turn me off, but glad both them are well received).
If only we can make petition for Signal 2, I will happily to sign for it. Ofc with same casts.

I wish JTBC and OCN dramas will be able to catch up with TVN or ratings. because these two also able to produce some quality dramas and better than big 3.

as a fan of PSH i really wish she accepts the role...if they didn't change the story much from the original she is going to be a very important character in the film in fact as important as CMS....I loved the original movie and how it focused on all the three leads with equal importance and characterization to all of them...I want to know who will play the prosecutor role cause that role is among the 3 important roles in the film...but my main concern is the filming date as she will be filming for doctors for the coming 2months...hopefully they will wait for her...

yes that would be awesome...but krw is really overworked this year..he literally didn't take any break...he started filming for doctors immediately after his films..so I'll b worried abt his health...other than that I have no other problems with him playing the role..

Yey for Signal!!! Thank you PD-nim, it truly is a masterpiece! It raised the bar so high and has spoilt me to expect more for dramas I watch! Congrats to JJW, KHS and LJH too! ❤

I wish PSH all the best in her new film role with CMS. I think it is pretty much confirmed if news is out, just like Doctors when news was leaked. She has graduated from uni so now she can focus 100% on her career.

If they start the filming in the 4th quarter as said, she really doesn't have any reason to reject it

"This time, [Chinese audiences] are responding as if Signal is a masterpiece, and I’m both embarrassed and quite shocked by the reaction.”

Signal is a masterpiece. Silly PD.
