Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 23-29, 2016

Oh Hae-young Again broke the ratings record for a tvN Monday-Tuesday drama this week, a record previously held by Cheese in the Trap. This is a huge accomplishment as the show only grows in popularity and acclaim. The people are loving it, and for good reason. Let’s just hope the extension won’t hurt the show’s momentum, since its well on its way to becoming a classic.

In the middle of the week, Lucky Romance got off to an amazing start at 10.3% right out of the starting gate, but experienced a semi-significant drop down to 8.7%. Still not bad numbers by any means, but next week will be the real tell—overall it seems like the Wednesday-Thursday dramas are constantly changing places, so who knows what’ll happen.

As for the weekend shows, cable drama Mirror of the Witch is performing decently at just under 3%, while tvN’s Dear My Friends seemed poised to break the 5% mark, before slowing down a bit for its even episode. No other surprises really, with Flower in Prison still pulling in some solid numbers, and Beautiful Gong Shim picking up steam.

Thanks for this, Heads!

I'm loving Beautiful Gong Shim to pieces! Minah and Nam Goong-min are slaying their roles–they're so entertaining and heartwarming. I'm glad to see two digits for the show and I hope it only gets higher. It's such a fun show and Minah and Nam Goong-min are an absolute hoot to watch! I can't wait for more.

Aye, I gotta start watching Oh Hae-young Again since I've only read good things about it.

OHY Again totally deserves its success! I didn't expect much starting it, but got hooked and I'm so loving the female lead. I didn't hear of the extention, dunno if I should be happy or weary. Hopefully, they won't hurt the flow of the plot.
I'm also glad Beautiful Gong Shim is rising. That's one cute drama and *spoiler* anyone squealed when Ahn Dan Tae was jealous in yesterday's ep?*end of spoiler*

Hi!
I think that's gonna be me with Oh Hae-young Again! Like, I read a little bit of the premise and I was already starting to get a bit confused because of all the initial setups and storylines, but I have a feeling I'll really like it, too.
As for Gong Shim, omg, I didn't wanna post anything from ep 5 to avoid having someone be spoiled, but since you mentioned it: ???? me me me! ***SPOILER ALERT***
Aha, I wonder if you're talking about the very last part when he friggin' SLAMMED HIS CAST into the wall. Like, dude, omg you're already hurt! Lol, I died laughing. I love Dan-tae and his quirky self! Also! How much do you love the bit where he kept on hunching over and holding his hip to match with Gong Shim!? Ahaha, ep 5 was full of hilarious moments and ep 6 looks like it's gonna be the official start of the boys' "competition" to win Gong Shim's heart.

Hope 'Beautiful Gong Shim' beats 'The Flower In Prison' if keep that speed, that will be a shame for MBC sageuk drama. Then, I will laugh on it (sorry who love TFIP).
MBC sageuk drama getting terrbile with Hwajung and TFIP.
They told that are drama which celebrate their anniversary but the screen quality of them can't beat "Six Flying Dragons" or "Jackpot".

I agree actually. I dropped TFIP much before 7th episode. The only reason for me to tune into a 50 episode Sageuk was Go Soo and the PD. But unfortunately, it's lost its shine way too early (atleast for me) maybe because of the lackluster female lead.

I just hope this week, they will get double digit ratings again. T_T

I watched both episodes right after they aired, and found the show perfectly likable and pleasant ... but that's all. I think the drama's problem is that it tries too hard to be a crowd-pleaser by using all the familiar cliches of CEOs, rich dude - poor girl, comatose sibling, childhood first loves etc. But in doing so, resulted in a drama that's ~likable~ but not crack-level amazing. Verdict: I like Luck Romance, but don't feel addicted enough to live watch it. Hopefully it ends its run well, and I'll marathon watch in one go. I'm just sad it didn't utilize the original webtoon's charm and originality (the hero being a hardworking, penny-pinching regular salaryman).

LR is comical and light, but it's average or below average in writing, directing, and editing. Episode 1 has a jarring shift in tone from the female lead's dizzy adventure to the female lead's way to superstition. Episode 2 has more stories going on, but it reveals more of the show's cliche in plots and characters.

I love Ryu Joonyeol and I would watch it if I don't have anything else to watch at lunch, but otherwise, I'll just read the recap if I'm curious.

I have a question regarding viewership ratings. I remember someone previously explained that the ratings refer to the percentage of households watching that particular show out of the total number of households who have their TVs switched on... Something along these lines.

So, does that mean that there's a possibility that a drama getting 10% on a weekday might in fact have few viewers in absolute numbers compared to a weekend drama with 5% ratings? (Since there are more people at home watching TV over the weekends.)

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I remember reading an article online that says the ratings are based on ~2000 households in Korea. Since they are using the same sample size, I'm guessing that the drama with a higher rating would definitely have more viewers than a drama with a lower rating.

(That being said, I think ratings are not representative of the total number of viewers; people could just watch online and/or repeated telecasts anyway)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't think that's explanation is right. It's still refer to percentage of people watching that show out of total household sample used.
And if they count the total only from household that's switched on their TVs, the total rating for all show at same air time should be 100%, which we now from nowadays rating won't be right.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that scenario could totally happen. More people watch TV on the weekends. Let's say for example 100 people are tuning in on a weekday, so 10% puts us at 10 people watching. Let's say 300 people are watching on the weekends, then 5% is 15 people. That being said, the PERCENTAGE is the more informative number, since it shows how much the show is attracting viewers out of all households watching TV. Look for the shows with higher ratings, even if it means less in absolute viewers, since it tells you how people are choosing to spend their time.

If a cable show manages to climb past 4%, that's pretty darn good for that network. If a weekday show is hitting 20% these days, it's a HUGE deal (as you saw with DoTS and its climb past that). For weekend shows however, the good shows might chart from 25% and up, with the exceptional shows possibly(usually?) finishing around 40%+. At least this is my personal standard for judging if something is worth watching, since my tastes usually align well with the Korean public rather than the international audience.

So happy for Oh Hae-young Again and Mirror of the Witch! Both shows are so good, can't wait for OHYA tomorrow!

I'm also watching Lucky Romance and am kind of surprised by the drop. It's not great but not bad, either--pretty typical rom-com fare so far. I guess viewers are bored with that now.

I'm not watching Beautiful Gong Shim right now because I can really only handle 3 dramas at once (and I like them to be MonTue, WedThu, and Weekend) but I'm hearing such good things about it! Soo tempted to start it...

I'm watching OHYA, Gong Shim and Lucky Romance.
And thinking of picking up Mirror. I have to say the basic difference between OHYA and Gong Shim, OHYA makes me watch it raw and I can wait for Gong Shim to be subbed. So even if you start Gong Shim you won't feel the need to marathon it, its a feel good drama at heart with simple premise, its the characterization which is zany, even their cliffhangers are not much of cliffhangers.

I picked up Mirror because it's such a different genre compared to the other dramas which are present day based. It's still in the beginning mode, but the fantasy element is really good. It's nice to suspend your belief for awhile when watching this drama and let it lead you to wherever it plans to go.

Getting interesting: Master of Noodle, Monster;
Nice but same: Jo DeulHo,
meh, until when: Flower in Prison;
filmed beautifully: Mirror of Witch,
Oh no: I like Chae Jung-ahn more than Hye-ri (Entertainer), and Lee Soo-hyuk more than Ryu Joon-yeol(Lucky Romance)

and
Five children: GOlf couple! I still remember their melo in 'New Tales of Gisaeng'- What a change lol. I remember

Show is filmed a few weeks ahead, as I understand. Even though they sign not to disclose the stuff, it looks that some people put up spoilers. I don't know if it is accurate (How great if it turns out not true) but that is what I read in King of Mask Singer DC gal (MC not making 10th win). They say he picked not much of a song. If that is true, I am sad, but I know he wants to lift the burden (he was getting thin) and goes on with his regular lives.

I wonder how well Lucky Romance will do in the long run because the first two episodes bored me to tears and the preview didn't look much better. I love Ryu Jun Yeol but the show is just bland as hell, and it just reminds me too much of She Was Pretty (the central premise is different but the feel is the same imo). Having Hwang Jung Eum in both isn't helping me with the feeling of deja vu.

Doesn't surprise me that the ratings dropped on Lucky Romance. It's still a bit early to tell yet but I'd venture guess why. I'd say that korean drama watchers noticed some of the same things we non koreans noticed. It's got way too many familiar tropes. I have a feeling it may not be able to recover those 2% since I figure they're the people that decided early on they didn't want to devote the next few weeks of their time watching the same story all over again.

Yay, I'm so happy that OHYA is already being heralded as rom-com classic. I can only hope that it continues to rise to meet everyone's expectations, both in quality and ratings.

Mirror of the Witch is becoming another drama I can't wait for each week. Especially since things seem like they're going to be getting really interesting after this most recent episode. I can't get over how wonderful Yoon Shi-yoon is here.

I've noticed that Fri-Sat cable dramas often go down in ratings on Saturdays because of primetime weekend shows, so I'm impressed that MOTW rose to 2.7%. It also has a strong competitor in Dear My Friends.

I hope Beautiful Gong Shim continues to rise too.

With the consistently high numbers it's pulling, why doesn't Five Enough ever get mentioned? Does it have something to do with it being a weekend show? But then, Flower in Prison is also a weekend show. I'm watching both and Flower in Prison is pretty much a yawn so far but Five Children brings humor, angst, romance and has a different story to tell with the main female character being divorced and dealing with her ex's new family.

I don't get why it gets no love and not even a mention. It's my baby/obsession so I feel the need to defend and promote it.

I am so addicted to FC! My friends and family are worried because that's all I do these days - watch old eps of FC over and over again while waiting for the new ones.

That being said, I kind of understand why it gets little mention, especially with an international audience. First of all, there's no good way to describe the plot - a widower with 2 kids and a divorcee with 3 kids fall in love. People ask, so what? What's wrong with that? And unless they watch the show, there's no way to describe the humor and the angst and the heartwarming scenes of FC. You can try to explain - oh her ex-husband cheated on her, his mother-in-law is super crazy and is against him dating, but until you watch, you can't really understand the "crazy" that is MIL. And the golf couple - are there really words to describe the absurdity that is Kim Sang Min's character? Nope.

It's definitely more popular in Korea because the stigmas that the show bring up, the way they characterize mothers and mother-in-laws, it makes sense to Korean people. The Korean audience is able to sympathize and empathize with the situations presented. But as I'm explaining the premise of the shows to my friends, it's easy to see that Westerners don't hold the same idea of filial piety and the role/high position that parents continue to hold even when they're children are adults. I think a lot of people would find it difficult to understand how the adults of the show keep butting into their kids' business, and think the show is ridiculous.
