Ugh. There have been so many off castings lately, admittedly amidst a few particularly awesome ones.

This casting is by far the worst though. Not one salvageable thing about it. He better not confirm. If he does, I think I will actually start resenting him.

Didn't Taecyeon have a ghost in his drama a couple of years ago? I tried to watch it but he is just not a natural actor. Maybe he's all ghosted out.

If they insist on an idol, I would suggest Baro. At least he's still born in the same decade as Sohyun!

It's eerie that my last comment regarding this drama was that I hope they cast someone age appropriate and talented for the female lead. Namely it not being the three child actresses who're mostly doing adult role these days despite not being legal yet.

However, I actually love the casting of Kim So-hyun so this time, it's the guy who's a problem. So many young looking and talented actors and they actually pick Taecyeon? Like... WTF?! He looked like Kim Soo-Hyun's hyung in Dream High (something they made fun of in the drama itself as a meta). And that was 5 years ago! How do they expect him to convincingly romance someone who played a child counterpart to that same costar only a year after Dream High? It makes zero sense, it's so frustrating!

So we have PBG-KYJ, YSY-KSR and KSH-Taecyeon. Either our pool of talented actresses moved to China or the casting directors drink before deciding who they want.

Lazy casting directors don't want to take a chance on any actual 20something actresses because they're not big enough 'names' (thanks to having been locked out of most potential lead roles in their age group by idols during the years when they should have been scoring).

The Kim girls were able to build their profile through child roles precisely because that was the one type of role idols couldn't touch - if idols were children, they'd have been locked out of those too.

it's a shame that things have come to this.

Oh man, no! I love Taec but it's hard to picture him 'romancing' Kim So-hyun. *smh* That picture is just so wrong in so many levels. It's like that commercial with Kim Woo-bin all over again. *sigh*
I vote for Lee Min-ho (the younger one that is). It's been so long since his last drama.

At least the Kim Woo Bin pizza cf had them looking like oppa-dongsaeng, that's ok but he really looked like a shark lol.

But here, romancing? wtf. Poor Sohyun will have to do all the acting, both in front of the camera and in interviews where she will have to pretend to like working with this shirtless cardboard. It's not even her bias Yoochun.

I like taecyeon, but I hope he decline the offer. I think he himself hope for a different drama comeback, something more... mature? I mean, not a teenage drama with a minor leading lady!
Isn't Kang Ha Neul free? Even though I would like to see him as a grown up :)

oOoOo that's interesting. kang ha neul IS free since he rejected that stranded island drama...

my proposal:
KHN can take on this drama (yasss i want to see him in more mature roles BUT then again, he does high school kid so well and not to mention, much muchhhh better--and more realistically, come on--than taec)

ANNNNND WAIT FOR IT.....

we can give taec to that stranded island drama to headline with yuri. TA DA! now all the acting talents match up & everyones happy. wooo

I love Kang Ha Neul but I don't think it's a good idea...firstly because Taecyeon and him are almost the same age (Taecyeon was born in December 88, KHN in February 1990)
What's the difference then? Sure KHN is the better actor here but other than that...The pair would still look weird.

Plus, don't kill me for saying that but KHN really looks his age (even older sometimes)- it reminds me of Kim Rae Won, I always thought that the guy was older than he is in reality.

My top choice would be: Yook Sungjae (born in 1995)+he has the acting chops.

Kang Haneul is just a couple of years younger, and honestly he'd look almost as wrong with KSH. Though of course, he's at least an actor and has the abilities to justify calling himself one.

If Taecyeon wants to act so badly, he should consider web dramas instead of stinking up hour-long shows with his godawful 'acting'.

Kang Ha Neul is suited for mature roles, i think this needs actors who still maintain the innocent image like SungGae or Ji Soo (for example) to act against the young innocent KSH

@Kayla, I would totally love to see that! Thinking about it Taec wouldn't be a bad choice for that drama. Moreover, If he's lost in a deserted island, we'd get some abs here and there, right? Let's say... ALL THE TIMES LOL

About Kang Ha Neul, I'm aware he looks his age or older (that's why I want to see him as a lead in a serious romantic drama), but still... He does high school roles quite well. If not, I hope for Sung Jae too. I love him, and I love him with Kim So Hyun. School 2015 has left me a bitter taste in my mouth.

How does what Choiza and Sulli do have any bearing on this drama? They are both of age and consenting adults. I'm already creeped out by it enough, but his acting is terrible on top of it.

BUT, in my wildest dreams, i would prefer it if a relatively unknown actor is cast. seeing as this is tvN, it's not that far of a stretch to hope for. i'm just ready to see some new and young (*cough*young enough to match other young actresses *cough*) actors headlining on mah screen.

When they cast the female lead, we know that this adaptation will be very similar to the original.

But then news of potential male lead comes out. Something tells me that there will be big difference between the drama compared to the webtoon because if they are doing the adaptation right, they shouldn't consider Taecyeon at all in the first place.

The comments here on Taecyoen's acting is way too harsh.
He is a actually quite watchable in his last drama - Wonderful Season, a weekend drama drama which most people commenting here didn't watch. His acting is definitely not KSH level of greatness but certainly so bad that warrants the chorus of nays here, going by his performance in Wonderful Season.

Seconded! I'm also stunned at all the hate on his acting considering how much I loved the heart he put in his role in Wonderful Season. I mean, I'd never even heard of Taecyeon before I watched that drama, but his role there gave me such a lasting impression that I looked up his name to remember.

That said though, I haven't watched any other dramas/movies he's done, so it's perfectly possible that he previously did a terrible role or two somewhere that left people with a bad impression. But I seriously don't understand anyone calling his acting terrible if they've watched Wonderful Season.

I mean, I get not liking the pairing, I'm totally not saying anything about that. In fact, I'm not even saying anything about not liking his acting- everyone has their own opinion. But a lot of the harsher comments about his acting seem REALLY uncalled for.

Wonderful Season seems like it's been totally passed over or forgotten...

Required fields are marked *

-Shrugs- I'm perfectly fine with you feeling that way. Neither I nor the other commentator said anything to criticise people who don't like his acting. I personally loved his role there, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start a war because you disagree with me.

It's just the flaming that I objected to, not criticism or dislike. Like how there's a difference between saying 'I didn't like their facial expression during such and such scene, it could've been more emotive' and going 'a wooden plank emotes more'. The latter is an exaggeration, unhelpful, and just plain unkind, which is why I don't like staying quiet when I see that.

So yeah- you didn't like his acting, that's fine, not my problem. But instead of giving constructive criticism, do you have to say such harsh things about another person like 'they'll never be a better actor'? That's the only thing I object to, honestly.

0

I don't think anyone is obliged to be nice about someone who's proven, time and again, that he sucks at the job he's about to do here. He's no rookie, he's been acting for what, six years? And if Wonderful Season was the best he can do, I seriously wonder why any casting director thinks he's worth the effort, because it's not even like the dramas he's had lead roles on have been successful.

He's getting opportunities that are way beyond any demonstrated ability, I think people have every right to tear him a new one especially considering the complete inappropriateness of this casting on every level.

0

I think it sounds like we just have different viewpoints on what counts as being nice, to be honest. I mean, for me, I don't think holding back on extremely demeaning comments is being nice so much as it's just being...civil and fair, I guess?

Like, as you and I have both said, you've got every right to criticise a job that you think is being badly done. I definitely don't think anyone should have to hold back their honest opinions on someone's acting. It's just that I feel like there's a line between a critical opinion and unwarranted personal attacks.

I think I can understand how it might come off as me going 'you can criticise but be nice about it', but for me it's just...I guess when I see criticism turn personally insulting, it feels like it loses all of its integrity.

Personally speaking, criticism that seeks to demean, patronise, or insult the subject doesn't feel like intellectual discourse anymore so much as glorified verbal abuse. It doesn't feel right to see any person demean another person simply for the sake of reinforcing their own opinion, or amusing other people at their expense. It just feels unnecessary and repulsive to me.

I can't really comment on Taec's career since like I've said, my first and last experience watching him was in WS. I personally really liked his role there, but we've already established that we disagree on that. I'm honestly not looking to change your opinion on him though, so...

Honestly the only thing I have to say is that I did and do agree that I don't think this particular role works for him. Even putting side the age problem, I felt like in WS Taec shined most when interacting with other family members versus when with his love interest. (Again though, just my personal opinion on liking him there, not trying to ruffle your feathers.) I mean the whole thing just screams 'miscast' from the get-go so I'm not really taking it as a serious possibility with any actual chance of happening.

But yeah, again: I've no problem with criticising someone for a perceived imbalance in their abilities and opportunities. It's just when that criticism turns into debasing and personal insults that I feel like a line has been crossed.

I guess we just really have different viewpoints on the matter.

0

Thank you, Fish N'Chips! You said what I wanted to say.

0

@Fish N' Chips - you seem to have a very different definition of the term 'personal attacks' from the one I know.

Not a single person here has criticised him as a person, only as an actor/singer based on the (limited) ability he's shown on the job and his complete unsuitability for this role.

0

@pogo. Personal attacks aren't solely defined by calling someone a "bad" person. They're equally defined by using demeaning language that mocks a person, which is the situation I used the term to describe in the first place. I don't understand why you're changing the subject from demeaning someone to criticising their moral character, when I specifically focused on the former in my reply.

'Demeaning, insulting, and patronising' is how I described the personal attacks I don't approve of. Things that mock or insult another person to reinforce one's own point or amuse others. Things that can feel humiliating to the person in question if read by them.

Most of the comments here are perfectly fair criticisms of an actor's ability and his suitability for a casting. I've never once said they /weren't/. From the beginning, I only mentioned that I felt uncomfortable at some overly harsh comments.

Talking about how you think an actor is bad and they've gotten undeserved opportunities is a perfectly understandable expression of opinion and a fair criticism. If anybody got upset at that, I'd agree it's being unreasonable.

But calling someone a 'wooden pinocchio'? Saying they 'stink up hour-long dramas'? Saying they've done SUCH great roles in past dramas as a 'flagpole', or a 'bench'? Saying they 'couldn't act to save their life'? Saying 'they could act as a piano--' 'but then at least pianos can express some emotion'?

In my eyes, that's no longer criticism with integrity. It's unnecessarily mocking another person for your own validation or amusement. It's something I'm personally adverse to.

I understand that others may feel comfortable with that kind of criticism. I'm not about to try to change that opinion. I've never intended to try and prove one side right or wrong, just to express how I personally objected to it.

Some people enjoy criticism that demeans others. Some people feel a bit bad but approve anyway because it's fun, or inwardly approve but outwardly object. Some people object to it completely because they don't feel comfortable with it. C'est la vie.

0

He's considering starring with an underage girl in a role for which he is completely unfit - I repeat, viewers are NOT obliged to be restrained in the language we use to describe his professional abilities.

And really, he SHOULD be embarrassed by his own acting. What you call 'demeaning', I read as fairly accurate snark, and if a public figure can't bear to hear criticism of himself for sucking at his job, then that's just more proof he's in the wrong line of work.

LMAO Harsh but true. There might be room for improvement, maybe he just has to find a genre that fits his acting abilities better like Shin Se-Kyung who did better in The Girl Who Sees Smells. what money? His last drama as lead finished with ratings under 1 percent.

and I have yet to see a single receipt supporting idol fans' pet claim that casting untalented idols as drama leads means they make lots of money abroad when the dramas inevitably flop in Korea. Every case involving the sale of foreign rights making decent money for a flop drama has always involved either an actual Hallyu star actor or a superstar on the level of Rain.

and if they cast him, it just means his agency has clout.

He's certainly not being cast for talent or even previous success, that's a fiction on the level of the idea that he can sing/rap.

honestly, the fact that I've watched his dramas has more to do with the fact that I've watched a lot of dramas in general. Watching kdramas is fairly normal, if you have an interest in them (I assume you do, since you are here in the first place)

The dramas Taecyeon was in were dramas I was interested in for other reasons (other actors, the writers) but he turned up as an unpleasant surprise in supporting roles. If my expressing my opinion of his acting offends you, that's too bad but your liking him doesn't mean what I said wasn't true.
