Ready to conquer fate in Mirror of the Witch
by javabeans
Soooo pretty.
By now my expectations for Mirror of the Witch are pretty high, just based on the quality of the promotional work we’re seeing, whether it’s the beautifully moody stills or the teasers that are simultaneously ethereal and eerie.
We’ve got just a few more posters today, mostly featuring the central couple of our young hero, a man whose talent is hamstrung by his ignoble birth (Yoon Shi-yoon), and the witch he falls in love with (Kim Sae-ron), originally a princess until a curse turned her heart frozen, leaving her to remain hidden away and separated from her birthright.
Both characters are held down by their fates in different ways, though our last teaser tells us, “There is no fate that cannot be conquered in this world,” which makes me think they’ll put up a good fight trying to overcome their setbacks. They’ll have a formidable opponent in the drama’s primary villain, played by Yeom Jung-ah (My Neighbor’s Wife), who’s looking dark and devious in the last poster (on one side of her is Lee Sung-jae (Warm and Cozy), while Kwak Shi-yang (Oh My Ghostess) stands on the far right). I’m particularly looking forward to Yeom Jung-ah tearing it up as the wicked witch out to turn the fates in her favor — she’s a definite force to be reckoned with.
To be honest, by now I figure we just have to accept that these are the actors in these roles and try to move past Yoon Shi-yoon’s and Kim Sae-ron’s real-life ages, and in that spirit I’m looking optimistically at these posters. At least Yoon has a youthful energy and boyish face, army service be damned. I do think he can pull off a role that’s younger than his age, and look to 2013’s Flower Boy Next Door to remind me of it. Glass really half full, right?
We’ve got about two weeks left till the drama premieres, so I figure we may get one or two more teasers and then it’ll be showtime. I look forward to it! Mirror of the Witch premieres on May 13 and airs as a Friday-Saturday drama on JTBC.

As long as Yoon Shi Yoon does not look too old for her - which he certainly does not judging by the posters - I have no complaints about the age difference. I loved him in Flower Boy Next Door and am really looking forward to seeing him here.

Agree! It's not about looking good. In this case the age difference does matter because in real life she is only 13 ( under age by a mile) and romancing even if acting with ......not right! She/They could have waited few years.
Sorry to say this.........how can it be ok ?...
On a positive note....she is very pretty!
And would be remain lovely few years down the road too

She's actually 15 in real life. Still young, and definitely kinda weird to think that he's almost double her age. But I think if their acting is good and they have chemistry then a lot of people (me included) would push it to the back of my mind. And kdramas aren't known to be inappropriate or anything either so not that big of a deal in my opinion.

i agree. it's definitely not about looking 'okay'. although she is slightly older than 15, it's still.......ugh. i've been waiting for yoon si yoon to come back from military service and jump into a drama in forever, but i've lost a lot of respect for him for agreeing to do something like this. actors DO have a say in what projects they choose :/

I also hope that it doesn't become a trend but by the looks of it, I think it will.
I mean on another network, we have Kim Soo Hyun to be possibly paired with Taecyeon...
One of the aspects of Kdramas that I love is the romance and so when I see such a mismatched pair, I can't fully immerse myself (and mismatched in terms of age, cause Kim Sae Rom is a wonderful actress and so is Yoon Si Yoon) but...idk, I need to see the first episode of Mirror of the Witch.

The thing with this cast is.. They both actually looked the same age (18/20). That's why there is only a few people complaining, and people are used to see her with a older male lead (Hi! Kim Sae Ron and Woo Hyun looked so good together in High School Love On, hope Yoon Si Yoon and her have good chemistry too.
Rather than the age gap, I'm more worried she won't look mature enough for her role. But KSR is a solid actress so she might pull it off nonetheless.
Hope the drama does well. And eep, isn't YSY joining 2D1N as a member? So excited about that *squeals*

I really like the fantastical, fairytale vibe I've been getting from this drama. It feels like a traditional fairytale (reminds me of the Grimm's thread in an OT a while back). I've never been able to finish an entire Saeguk (fusion or otherwise), so I'm hoping this one can break that!

Really, after the beauty and gem that we were GIFTED with "Marriage Contract" (really, "Marriage Contract" was-- no, IS-- a gift in disguise.... a really dimple-filled disguise<3), I don't feel so shy and turned off with pairings with considerable age gaps anymore XD

Not for that time period and for many parts of the world, the legal age for marriage is 16 (or even younger) with parental consent or a court order.
As long as the "relationship" is chaste - don't have any real issue w/ it - KSR is acting a part, not actually being in a real relationship.

yeah, she looks way too modern in the posters and that's because her loose hair is too short to be plausible for a Joseon-era lady.
I think loose hair+hanbok can look pretty (Shin Mina was gorgeous in Arang even though her hanbok was basically rags) but it only works if they get the right hair length.

My concern about this drama is that the world the characters will inhabit will not be vast enough. I want to see goblins, monsters, and various charaxters and creatures. Based on the posters and trailers, I don't think it will have that. I want to see visual effects, buy that's unlikely due to time constraints.
I'm thinking on the lines of Arang and the Magistrate. That's what I'm hoping for. Still, I will watch the first two episodes. And I will judge then if I need to continue.

The posters look great and YSY looks young I LOVE him and she's pretty but can't watch it if they are in a real romance. Age gap I don't care about if everyone is an adult. But my moral compass won't let me support a minor paired with an adult no matter what. I'll maybe check in if I find out from recaps that the romance is more of a brotherly sisterly love or just a girl crush on an older oppa that nothing real ever happens.

I'm still baffled that we have to be subjected to such a huge age gap almost to the point of feeling uncomfortable. Are they running out of Korean actresses who fit the appropriate age. KSR is an awesome actress but I hate that romance is given up on in dramas for the sake of the age gap. It wouldn't care about the age gap of she was at least 21 or 25. So frustrating ?

Kim Sae-ron is playing a princess/with with a "frozen heart" right? Maybe part of the curse is that she doesn't age? Maybe she's "frozen" at the age at which the curse was put on her? (Unless she was born with it, which, I don't know.) Anyway, if/when they break the curse, she'll age up? Just an idea.
Regardless of the age difference (which, if her parents are okay with it, then I don't see that anyone has a right to complain, assuming her parents have a say in what roles she can and cannot take on), I'm still looking forward to this a great deal, just because it is Yoon Shi-yoon's comeback drama. I've missed him on my screen.

I don't think her parents get much say in this, considering Korea doesn't even have mandatory protection for child actors/entertainers in place (which is how you end up with 14-year-old Kim Yoo-jung being shocked to come to the US and discover that, as a minor, she literally was not allowed to work beyond a certain number of hours a day, instead of being worked 24/7 like in Korea)

i guess theyre prepared with the consequences when they cast underage actors to play a role. i wish they didnt make her story into some serious romance with all the skinship things which normally happen when the actors are in 'legal age'.
once upon a time underage kirsten dunst not even a teenager at that time playing a role of a mature woman with brad pitt who like 20 years older. its end up great. so this one, i hope the same.

Interview with the Vampire was HUGELY controversial for having a scene where a then 11-year-old Kirsten Dunst had to kiss Brad Pitt.
Yes, it made sense in context since she was playing an ageless vampire trapped in a child's body but Dunst herself has gone on the record about how she really didn't want to do the kiss scene and felt uncomfortable with it even though it was just a peck.
She also turned down Mena Suvari's role in American Beauty when she was 16 because (in her own words) she didn't want to be naked under rose petals or kissing Kevin Spacey, who was in his 40s at the time. The fact that such a role was even offered to her while she was underage is appalling, but at least she was able to turn it down and say exactly why, instead of feeling like she'd run out of options and agree to such a hypersexualised role.

Yes, JTBC has attempted a saguek before. It's called Maids. I believe it aired a couple of dramas before Ms. Temper and Nam Jun ki.
Still can't get behind the romance no matter how pretty it looks. Kim Sae Ron's being an underaged actress in a romantic part with an actor twice her age makes me seriously uncomfortable. It's something I just can't push to the back of my mind.
I read on Soompi, that they were a bit nervous filming the first encounter scene. Little wonder why! smh...

I honestly don't mind much about their age gap, i mean look at them, she barely looks 15, if a new baby drama viewer were to watch this series they'd definitely think she's probably 17 or 18 at least.
I think the only way she can fool all of us into believing she is of that age would be how she portrays her character.
Just one important thing to point out that has been making me scratch my head like a dog with fleas, didn't the current plot line say that he was an illegitimate child of who knows who? Is it the King or some Noble man and if its the King is she his half sister?

As much as I love YSY I don't think I can get on board for this one. It would be one thing if the romantic relationship wasntd the focal point of the drama but it's rare for K-dramas to place the main focus anywhere else unless the plot is really complex and dense. Something tells me that is not going to be the case here. I could be wrong about thathe but I know that there is no way I could not be grossed out by these two making goo goo eyes at each other.

To me there are several problems about this casting.
She is way too young. Are there no actresses around the age of 20 in Korea anymore? They are cutting out a whole generation of actresses to give this part a child?
Nowadays in the West the women have to stay looking prepubescent to remain attractive. Weight and figure of 11 yrs old children are the goal (think Vicotria Beckham). Everything that reminds of a mature woman is cut away like during these now popular mommy makeovers.
As Asian women tend to be much smaller in size than the Western counterparts is now their only screw left to tighten the age?
I am well aware, that in medival times it was common to marry off 12 or 13 years old kids to older men in Europe's societies, and my guess is, it was common in Asia, too. But my fear is, that the writers are not going for authenticity, which could be the only reason to me, if well made, to watch such a story.

First, to be precise, Kim Sae Ron turns 16 in july. Second, she is not going to have sex with a 29 years old guy... she is acting... in a korean drama! In k-dramas it is even now very rare to watch a somehow hot/sexy kiss. For example: it is still common to have female leads keep their eyes open and act surprised when they get a first kiss and there's also not lip movement at all.
Also, I really don't think you can say a girl of 16 is a "kid" anymore. I'm not saying is it fine or normal to date an older man, but I wouldn't either dismiss a fictional love story because of the morbid and hypocrtical thoughts of some people... just as the saying goes: "evil is in the eye of the beholder"
