Happy Weekend
since it's the 1st April, let's talk about the small fun thing
1) I legit said "Xiao Shu -ah" whenever I saw all the Black collapse and pill scene in Mr.Black , I am too deep into Nirvana in Fire
2) DoTS chihoon is legit a chaebol!! the real chaebol! I really want to applause him, he is a crybaby when face mental breakdown but he grown up, his mom love his daugther in law, and that mom's actress is always play the bad's MIL in many drama
3) I want t a goat , I said I want a goat, I mean it, I want a goat
4) some editor should realize that putting the end of ep in the preview ep trailer is not a good idea.
5) I've been obsess with song Deewani Mastani from movie Bajirao Mastani, not to mention the video is visually stunning,
6) Eun sung teeth . . . .
7) and I am calling it, Min Yoon Gi will played by Yoo Ah In

Happy Friday! Keeping up with all these new dramas make my head spin -omg who has time to get depressed. It's like drama fan's heaven (Then again I don't have crack drama. I like them almost equally).
Anyway here is interview with Sin Se-kyung (26) who played awesome Boon-yi character for the people who still misses Six flying dragons. I've liked her from High kick2 days and remember Daniel Choi (who had love line with Hwang Jung-eum) said he had crush on SSK after the show.
Q: It was your first 50 episodes show.
A: "It was not harder physically than doing other mini-series. For example, male and female leads appear in 60 scenes out of total 70 scenes for a mini-series, so there is no room to breathe. But maybe because there were many leads in SFD, it was not bad. Since it was my first 50 episode show and people around me kept saying 'too long, too long' I was nervous...
Since we had long distance shooting, naturally I felt exhausted going back and forth. But I think it is lucky we finished without any accident."
Q: Boon-yi character was different from the characters you played before.
A: "I met writer-nim and fell in love with Boon-yi hearing explation about her character. I thought she was a cool character, looking at her first appearance, meeting Lee Bang-won etc in her path. I wanted to do well without making any damage to the character. I thought she was a hard-to-play character, having connected with many people and impacting their lives. It was obvious writer-nim had a clear message she wanted to relay through Boon-yi. I thought my ability was way too lacking to play such a character. Boon-yi was too a big and deep character for me to portray."
Q: Did you like the ending?
A: "I liked it personally. Many people died going through various incidents, but Boon-yi survived to the end and met Lee Do(BW's son), which made me getting emotional shooting the scene. I thought it was fortunate being able to see a chance for a hope."

Q: Were you disappointed with romance line with Yoo Ah-in?
A: "This is not the drama folloiwng their love line from the get-go. I liked it because it was different from the common love story viewers get used to watch. More than lovers, they had the big impact on each other as time passed, and I thought I wouldn't be able to do this kind of melo line again."
Q: What was LBW to Boon-yi?
A: "They were not comfortable to each other. LBW's tranformation and difference in their station could be some of reasons. Boon-yi couldn't scold BW like she did when she was a child, but she always had fond memory with him in one side of her mind. Boon-yi wanted to remember BW like that. BW became like a horse without shackle and reached to the state Boon-yi couldn't do
anything about it, but he was someone she couldn't let go."
Q: LBW was portrayed too nicely by Yoo Ah-in?
A: "I wonder if that is because YAI acted convincingly. Since there are alwyas different views on an incident, I think viewers might have felt that way. After KilBangWon appeared, some would think he was understandable if they followed BW's emotions, or some could feel he was cruel and evil if they did not. I know they didn't try to beautify BW."
Q: Boon-yi respected and followed Jung Do-jeon.
A: "I like Kim Myung-min Sunbaenim's wittiness behind his charismatic acting. KMN sunbaenim has many sides you can learn as an actor- like his standard attitude in the shooting site and attitude toward scripts etc. besides acting. No matter how long his lines were, he came to shoot completely mastered, so as a junior, I felt ashamed and embarrassed so I tried to work sincerely. Also he is so down-to-earth and has fun sides, I had hard time holding laugh while shooting together. When people had bust shots shot, juniors laughed rolling, but he never laughed. Because he had playful look in his eyes, it was hard to hold laugh even though he did not do anything. The shooting site with him always had plenty of laughing."

Q: How was other male actors? Was there any ideal type?
A: "Yoon kyun-sang is type who takes well care of people around- Very warm. The person who I trusted was Byun Yoo-han. Oppa didn't speak to me informally to the end, meaning we didn't talk that much in the site. Maybe that is why I felt I could count on him. I felt like he had this weight being dependable in the center in the site. Yoo Ah-in was sensitive. He knew how my
condition was. He is the person who knows what is needed and does that for you. He had the sense (and detail which you can't expect from male actors). YGS was warm, BYH was reliable, and YAI was sensitive, but none of them was my ideal type. Actually I don't have an ideal type so I don't know. Sin Gyung-soo PD-nim?"
Q: You seemed to have good chemistry with Byon Yoo-han even though you two were siblings in the show.
A: "I thought sibling chemistry was important too, and we had good chemistry. I think it will be nice if we can do the love line next time. I think he is a really good actor. The scene us re-uniting was when we were doing the first shooting, and the shooting situation was urgent. Byon Yoo-han ssi had poetic eyes and I really felt like I met my older brother who I haven't seen for a long time."
Q: How did you feel you got all filthy (to show her poor status) in earlier episodes.
A: "I liked it when I got all filthy. I felt disappointed my dirty appearance disappeared as time passed. I was thankful for the make up team. When I showed up getting all messy, everybody laughed. I even thought I may have overdone it and PD-nim even said to clean up a little, but I felt very comfortable. It is not common for an actress to show up like that in the first shooting, but I think they got used to it later."
Q:Boon-yi character didn't do much in later episodes.
A: "Rather than feeling disappointed, I thought it was natural flow of the story. I thought it was expected just like Boon-yi became a person who couldn't beat up the person as she wanted when she was young. But I thought even if she can't step in actively, she couldn't give up the purpose of living."
"She had positive and pro-active personality which I liked. It is very hard to meet such a character to play. Boon-yi had everything I don't have. She is not satisfied with present, and tries to keep going forward. Personally I like to take safe path rather than taking a risk, which makes boring life. I like something familiar and dislike having adventure, even if there is
faster path, I just use the same path that I am used to."

Q: Who you were closest?
"I was close to Yoo-mi Unni(Yeon-hee). Unlike other mini-series, I didn't have murderous schedule so we had a few good times together, and I have feeling I will see Yoo-mi unni outside of filming."
Q:What did you gain the most from doing SFD?
A: " People. The most precious thing I gain Whenever I do a piece is people. I think I learned how to blend myself with various people, rather than trying to standout myself.. I don't care about show's success too much. No matter how much I want, I realized thing will turn out as it meant to be. The only thing I am greedy about is relationship with people around me. No matter
how successful the piece I worked is, I feel unhappy if I don't have good relationship with precious people close to me. I might feel worthy doing the work, but that is not the biggest reason for my happiness. So I separate my occupation and myself, and live like any other people in my age group."
Q: You work constantly because you can't stand having a break?
A: I think length of period of taking break is not important. Important thing is that if I enjoyed that period feeling satisfied. Even though I think having time alone is important, I am not the type to insist on having a long break. I just need to have balance. The thing I want to do the most now is to sleep without setting an alarm. Doesn't it feel great?
Q: What kind of role you want to do next time?
A: I'd like to do a doctor role. I think putting together a drama using doctor is attractive. Doing Boon-yi character who was trying her hardest to protect people during political incidents, I thought about a character big and deep. Since doctor deals with life, I thought some intereating character could be crafted.

Have you thought about putting these interview translations on a blog of its own and just linking them in one post here?
It would allow them to be all in one place, which would be useful particularly if people want to go back to them (no fun going through an archive of OTs).
Also, I think adding details about the interview (who? where originally published? when?), with links to the original source (I understand the translations are your own, but I'm guessing it's not you doing the interviews?).

others:
This week we had another new couple drama created- Joo Sang-wook and Cha Ye-ryun from Dazzling Temptation. I love dorky JSW. When was that? I remember sometime ago his mom said "He has no one dating now. I know because when he dates, he closes his door and becomes so secretive."lol But I didn't imagine he would date some serious looking girl like CYR :)
Too bad page Turner is a short show(why show?). Sin Jae-ha who plays Seo Jin-mok of Page Turner said, "When I did 'Sassy go go', we were all in similar age group. Actors/actresses with my age group want to work with people with around same age. They all say it is nice to have many sunbaenim/seniors, but being in the shooting site where you can talk and play comfortably is very nice. I met Ji Soo in the auditions many times even before doing 'Sassy go go', so I felt very comfortable with him. The was the first time I met Kim So-hyun in person. Since she started her acting when she was a child, she was senior and it showed. She was relaxed and did her acting matching to her partner's. I learned a lot from her, and even though she is 6 years younger than me, she was so mature. I almost called her Noona."
I rolled my eyes watching DoTS due to too much cheesiness and non-sense story, but I enjoyed it enough. Jin Gu is my fave. I am happy for his popularity- he says it is first time him being this popular since he was debuted as child actor for Lee Byung-hun (Song Hae-gyo was LBH's partner. So we know why she was treated like a grandma (per SHG)) in All-in. He said Song Joong-gi is great and the only thing he is better than him might be the fact that he is married and he has darker skin fitting playing a soldier. Actually he was marine MP. Also during the show 'Infinity Challenge' (2013) he was in, he confessed his one-sided love for a woman (who was not celeb) and ended up getting married to her a year after. Manly and romantic guy :)
And there were some interview with head of production company(NEW) of DoTS. Kim Woo-taek said "The original script written by Kim Won-suk only had the story about doctors working in disastrous areas. But when writer Kim Eun-sook joined, adding melo lines, soldier characters etc were added during the process of changing the scripts. On casting the male lead, there were other top star candidates but all hesitated because of burden of pre-production and long overseas shooting. But Song Joong-gi was eager saying this was too good to pass up. It was contradictory casting because he had fragile, feminine image, but I thought that could give fantasy. When I saw him in army uniform, I was sure the show would be success. Song Hae-gyo was recruited because of her popular star status in China."
btw People are excited already about Yoo Ah-in's cameo in ep 13. They say he decided to appear in the show for Song Hae-gyo as her birthday present. Who do you think YAH will be? Min Yoon-gi two girls fought for?

I'm dipping my feet into Korean variety land.
Always thought We Got Married to be a force show. Then decide to give earlier season a try. So I tried out Season 2 WGM. I kind of got addicted to Yongseo (Yonghwa CNBlue + SNSD Seohyun). I'm a bit shock at the girl. But then when I keep on watching it. I doubt she is what you can called fake. She's just an oddball in such a known group. Like what is girl like her doing in entertainment industry. I thought she's an alien for a moment and I did not know yonghwa was that charming. Haha
Lol bad news. Please preserve my sanity. I guess don't hate too much.
On other news, I somehow manage to watch an old Chinese movie called If You Are The One starring Shu Qi. I only name her because I only know her. I'm in love with it. Such a somber feeling and somewhat real. I love how the main guy play his character. Even his flirting comments sound so real. Not exactly cheesy. Shu Qi is all sort of awesome as miserable woman that is present there but so distant at the same time.
Watching Love that makes me cry and I'm stuck at the 7th episode. I find the earlier episode as much more memorable than the latter part.

< Watching Love that makes me cry and I’m stuck at the 7th episode
I think it's worth watching till the end. The only thing I don't like so much in the later episodes is that they just solidify my views of Haruta/Konatsu. As in, I still don't feel I know anything much about Haruta and I still see Konatsu as a very selfish person that has barely grown at all (I remain firm in my belief that what she needed most of all was time by herself, not a guy). Of course, they are side characters, but I got more satisfaction of even more minor side characters (Ren's co-worker who initially was despicable, then we saw a crack in his armour to reveal a vulnerable underbelly and ultimately he just matured and became happier.)
But none of that distracts from the main pair, who are so wonderfully right for each other from the beginning to the end that few OTPs are. It's not a fantasy romance they have, but a real connection that you know will last until 90 something, grey hair and wrinkles and all.

If they sub Kono Machi no Inochi ni I will give that a try because I wouldn't miss a Kase Ryo drama or film for the world. Plus, he's being reunited with Toda Erika! Seems it's only a one episode drama though :-( (not surprised, he really only does films these days).

Happens to me as well, though fortunately the subs for Itsukoi did eventually happen. 5 day turnaround for most episodes, but one episode took maybe twice as long – I think that's when most people "stopped" watching. But personally I liked the drama so much I watched both the raw versions and the subbed versions (only the second time I've ever done that).
I need to go back to Tamiou and Nazo no Tenkousei which both started off really well but then subs stopped. And then there's Otousan to Yobasete, which had a promising first episode, now multiple weeks later there's a sub for the second... and who knows if it will get fully subbed (not that I blame the subbers).
It's hard to watch when there are weeks or months in between subs, I usually end up waiting and then watch everything (if I find time) when it's all completed.

So, obviously I know this is a drama blog, so this might be slightly off topic, but if anyone would like to play Name That Kpop Song, I could use some help. I'm currently in Korea. Every time I'm out I hear this song being played in shops. But not being all that clued up on kpop, I don't know what it is. I kinda like the five seconds of it that I hear, and I'm curious to hear the rest of the song. I think it's a male group/artist. And it's maybe a bit hiphop-y? And it has a sax riff in it. That's about it. If anyone has any suggestionsas to what it might be, I'd appreciate your help. Thanks!

Hi there:
Well, it might just be me but the new shows this season aren't doing it for me. I do like Ms Temper, Daebak, Marriage Contract. But the others are just so dang depressing. I understand that we need conflict for stories but the feeling of evil can be so dang oppressive. How many bad bribed prosecutors, psychotic chaebols, greedy corporations, and lawyers with depression can one take in one half-year? It just makes me so emotionally tired. So the fatigue mixed with the sheer repetition of the same tropes...aaargh.. it's making me much much much too impatient.
So dramas I like:
Daebak: is surprising me. It's one tense (good tense) moment after another. I like how the characters are neither good nor evil. Right now I can't find it in me to hate the villain (whoever the villain may turn out to be.)
Ms Temper: Liking this as well. I love it that there's a woman warrior who understands the weapons of the warfare she's involved in. I guess I have to endure a romance although I'd rather not.
Marriage Contract: Seojinnie is so good. UEE is so good. This story hits the spot. Hating kdrama intrusive friends and family though.
Mrs. Cop: I still don't like ahjumma cop. She's grating, and no amount of bombastic 70's-style cop show music is gonna affect me. The crimes are blah. I look at this only for Kim Bum, ahjusshi cop, and for the junior female cop.
Mr Black: Watching and awaiting the revenge.
Monster: watching and awaiting the revenge.
My lawyer Mr Jo: watching but might drop.
Memory: watching but not sure if I can deal with the angst.
Vampire Detective: I haven't gotten to it yet. I like Lee Joon and his co-star so I'll try to get to it.
DOTS: This is taking the world by storm. So much so that Song Joong Ki was the first actor ever interviewed on the 9:00 news. He was so humble and amazed to be there. There was even a special on it enews KBS where they talked about the drama and the power of uniforms. Two presidents of two different countries recommended the show to their nations. So soldier porn. The more I see those cute sweet love banter clips of conversations between the OTP clips the more I want to see the show for those moments. But dangnabbit the fact that so many people like this show makes me realize why I just won't like it. I've tried to make it through certain episodes but then something melodramatic happens and I simply cannot go on. I like romance, I like fluffy romance, I like warriors. But I don't like the romanticization of war and I hate bad plotting.
KBS is really going to town with DOTS and SJK:

Happy Friday! Well, not so much lol. We still have two weeks of school which sucks because most schools are already on vacation. The end of school was pushed back to three weeks later! Good thing, I have dramas to comfort me lol.
Signal - Words will never be enough. That is all.
Yowakutemo Katemasu - Liked the premise. I'm a sucker for baseball after all. Too bad it didn't have much baseball. I don't mind seeing them lose, I just want to see them playing. At least, the pace picked up nearing the end. I like the students but I didn't feel a connection to them. I do want a spin-off of Time-conscious Kashiyama though. And although Kawato-sensei (still) has my heart, Aoshi-kun almost stole it with his loweringthecaptotearup scene.
Dragon Zakura - Not bad. Not hooked. No time. Maybe next time.
Love That Makes You Cry - Finally found the drama I didn't know I was looking for. I'm a sucker for one-sided love. By that I mean, couples with one half loving the other half who loves someone else. It's painfully good. Dysfunctional relationships are my weakness. Yeah there's something wrong with me lol. Hence, I'm shipping every couple here, the main OTP the least. I mean I like them and it's nice that it's mutual love and that they're both kind. And well, they have the healthiest relationship of all. My fave is probably Ibuki who got caught up in his dream of being accepted and close with his dad. So much that he lost a part of himself. No wait, I think my fave is the bromance between Sabiki and Ren or the makeshift family(Ren, Haruta, Konatsu) or maybe the sismance between Oto and Kiho. See, I love them all though it took me long to warm up to Mr. Mover(I still think he looked better in a suit lol). And I so love the music. It's not lively but it's uplifting. Surprisingly, I'm not frustrated at Oto. Likewise, I wasn't frustrated with Ren in the earlier eps. It makes sense to me why these two who love each other aren't together because of their circumstances. It's obvious that when you're picking between the one who loves you and the mutual love, you'll choose the latter. But with Oto and Ren, it would be out of character to do that. They're both too kind for that. And now that I think about it, the more I want them to be together and be happy.

(NOTE: contains spoilers)
<Love That Makes You Cry
I think the relationships depicted are just very real. Full of flaws, but very real. And not dramatised for the sake of it. I mean, the whole scenario of where both Ren and Oto have gotten to the point that they both admit, to each other, that they like each other but accept that they can't be together is very realistic. It's not within their characters to have a passionate affair or to drop everything at that instant – because life isn't a Mills & Boon novel.
Of course, they should be together because they are perfect for each other, but it's a process of them getting there, overcoming other hurdles, some of which are entirely unrelated to their love, but have to do with personal growth. That's why I found Kiho's words to Ren so true: "There's a difference between being kind and being too kind." Although Ren of course remains kinder than 99% of people on this planet, I think he learns by the end that it's okay for him to want something, rather than to just bow to what others want. That's why he ultimately pursues Oto and honestly tells her what he feels and that he wants them to be together. I do wish Oto would have been the one to break up with Ibuki (though his breaking-up speech redeemed his very self-centred behaviour & insistence on marriage before), but I guess Oto's growth was maybe in learning that she's allowed to accept good things that come into her life, rather than only sacrificing her happiness!
But I do wish we could have a bonus episode, where Ren and Oto are living in one place, together, and happy ever after... (even if the drama was written in such a way that I have no doubt that this is what follows for them – plus, at least this ending isn't so open as Soredemo Ikite Yuku was, even if there I too insist on imagining the couple as ultimately together).

Thanks, but that's all due to Yakamoto-Sensei's beautiful writing – his scripts are obviously very well thought-through and his characterisation is wonderfully done. If you start paying attention in his dramas, there's a lot you can find. Things like the flower-snapshots or the connection between Ren/Oto's meals shared in the first and last episode are easy to spot (though never forcefully dramatised), but there a lots of little things that are full of meaning (when Oto divides the flowers between her glass bottle and the vase that Ibuki bought).
I'm convinced in every other drama, Oto and Ren would have eaten the can of peaches together, but someone as thoughtful as Yakamoto-sensei of course has Oto eat the peaches quietly by herself, letting go of her life in Tokyo and everything that happened there. Which is precisely why the next step is possible for her. Because she hasn't, as Ren tells her, come back to where she started (it's not 'full circle', over and out), but she's moving forward. Meaning, that love that made her cry can finally blossom.

Yeah, the flower snapshot is a very subtle way to show why Oto and Ren could easily relate and communicate with each other, and understand each other so deeply, and fall in love so naturally, because they perceive and see things around them in a similar manner.
The part about her eating the can of peaches, the first thought which came to my mind was, was it still edible after so many years? Was she eating it as she felt a deep sense of emptiness inside her mind and she was yearning for Ren but was too reticent about her own feelings and also, she did not have the confidence that Ren would maintain a long distance relationship with her?
Which other dramas from the same writer Yakamoto-sensei would you recommend?
alua
April 1, 2016 at 9:12 AM
Pretty sure the peaches would still be edible. The sugar might have crystallised, but the fruit should be fine (I was thinking: she ate a whole can all by herself?!).
<she did not have the confidence that Ren would maintain a long distance relationship with her?
I don't think that thought even entered Oto's mind. She had already "finished" with Ren when she went to meet him and had that accident, and he didn't visit her in the hospital or afterwards either (well, she knew that he had been at the hospital and she did receive the flower photo). Since Ibuki broke up with her and not she with Ibuki, her mindset wasn't on a relationship with Ren – if it had been, I believe she would have initiated the breakup herself. I don't think she was at a point of wanting things for herself then.
Indeed, I'm not sure Oto reached at that point yet at all, just that she accepted someone offering something to her that she did want. Fortunately, the one offering it to her is Ren, who gives without expecting anything in return, just like Oto gives without expecting anything in return. Which is precisely why they, both being so selflessly kind, are right for each other and why Kiho and Ibuki, though both nice people with genuine affections for Ren/Oto, were not – because they asked Ren and Oto for things, expecting certain answers, knowing that neither Ren or Oto would say "no".
I think everything from Yakamato-sensei is worth watching, one way or another. Soredemo Ikite Yuku is probably my favourite, but it's absolutely heart-shattering so you have to steel yourself for that.

Hi! I'm very sorry to interrupt the conversation. I just want to confirm the writer's name. Isn't it Sakamoto Yuji ?
I also find his dramas very watchable, some even good, although I haven't watched his two recent works. The premise of his two latest dramas aren't my cup of tea so I need the right mood to watch them.
alua
April 1, 2016 at 10:02 AM
Yes, it's Yakamoto Yuji.
His last two dramas are Love That Makes You Cry (Itsuka Kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite Shimau) and A Restaurant With Many Problems (Mondai no Aru Restaurant). I enjoyed and would recommend them both.
I think the premises for both a pretty generic – stories that aren't about anything much. And in a way they aren't, because they are slice-of-life and about very ordinary people doing very ordinary things. But there's a lot of substance, a lot of depth in the characters and their simple tales.
I'd recommend Love That Makes You Cry if you feel like watching a story about friendship and romance and becoming an adult (in a sense); A Restaurant with Many Problems, meanwhile, is more about friendships between women – it's a drama that tackles sexual harassment, and a bunch of women who band together to make a living with their own strength (for me, this drama got better as it went on).

I don't think that thought even entered Oto's mind. She had already "finished" with Ren when she went to meet him
Alua, that's so true! Throughout this drama, I was always wondering why Ren and Oto put themselves through so much agony, they were too kind and considerate of the feelings of others around them but too harsh on themselves! Their love was so precious that they rather preserved it inside their minds. Even when they reunited in that family restaurant, Oto was acting very cautious and reticent, she was obviously not looking forward to much and not expecting anything, luckily Ren was quite insistent in conveying his thoughts and intent despite Oto's cold attitude, or else there would no happy ending.
Yeah Kengo Kora’s a gem, I like Ren's character so much, Kengo was able to bring out the intensity of Ren's earnest side without much effort. I loved the scene in which he listened so intently to Oto recounting the day her mum was cremated when she was haunted by a beautiful pinkish-orange sky. His all embracing way of absorbing every word she had to say was so "yasashii"!

<I like Ren’s character so much, Kengo was able to bring out the intensity of Ren’s earnest side without much effort.
It's quite amazing – especially because I've seen him in a couple of "bad boy" roles. Not the Ren-that-had-his-soul-sucked-out that we got in the middle of Itsukoi, but when Kengo plays psycho-guys. Like in Shoten In Michiru no Mi no Uebanashi and Tsumi to Batsu (the latter I did not finish... I might still, but it's a hard drama to watch, soooo twisted).
Started Marks no Yama too, and even just in the first episode where he had relatively little screen time he's making my hair stand on end...
Such truly chameleonic actors are hard to find.

So that was it lol. I actually don't really mind about slice of life dramas, it's just the whole idea/theme about it. I just don't really into love story unless there's another 'life-goal', not just two people end up together. Soredemo, Ikite Yuku and Mother are dramas I like the most from him.
Also, Marks No Yama is a pretty good drama IMO although Kengo Kora's role aren't really that big.

The latest k-dramas are not sustaining my interest, I’m currently only watching Ms. Temper & NJG just because of Lee Jo-won, who is my favorite actress and “lawyer Oska”. Did watch a few eps of DotS but it started to feel tedious. Will probably start watching Jackpot and Monster just to see Jang Geun-suk and Kang Ji-hwan.
For a change, I re-watched two earlier dramas of my favourite Japanese actor/actress, Takayuki Yamada & Ayase Haruka - Sekai no Chūshin de, Ai o Sakebu (Calling out love, in the Center of the World/Socrates in Love) and Byakuyakō (Into the White Night) . I loved the OTP in the two dramas and the first time when I watched these two dramas, I was overwhelmed with sadness as I felt so deeply for them that I was emotionally affected and my blood ran cold when the tragedy unfolded in both dramas. More so for Byakuyakō, based on a novel by Keigo Higashino, the twisted symbiotic relationship between the two was so insanely ill-fated and disturbingly tragic. There is a j-movie and a k-movie adaption of this novel too. I have yet to watch them, but I think the j-drama version has a bigger impact. The young Yamada Takayuki had that wilful masculine boyish look, quite unlike those typical effeminate flower boy actors. He was well suited for such roles which were foolishly steadfast in committing with dogged determination to serve the one he loved. Compared with k-dramas which tend to beautify and romanticize a difficult relationship, j-dramas can be quite brutal in laying bare the ugliness of harsh reality, such as the trauma of dealing with the death of a loved one and the hopelessness of being trapped in a twisted relationship.

In addition, a few other j-dramas I just watched recently are Love That Makes You Cry, 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made (From 5 to 9), Hanzawa Naoki, and Proposal Daisakusen (Love Operation).
Love That Makes You Cry captured the hearts of viewers through its simplicity and the sincerity of true love. It depicts the love between ordinary humble people who are struggling hard to make ends meet. The love between a mover and a carer can be so touching, even without over-the-top grandiose moments, such as “the captain of army special forces being picked up by a helicopter on the rooftop while the potential doctor girlfriend looked on in awe and admiration”. That kind of love is subtle but intensely sincere, Kengo Kora has the same kind of strong-willed and forthright demeanour which easily conveyed his sincere devotion without needing much words (Oh, he happened to be the lead of the j-movie version of Byakuyakō!), so there is no need for those cheesy scenes adorned with flowers, candle-light, heart-shaped balloons etc., which are so typical in k-drama rom-coms.
Though 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made is quite similar to k-drama rom-coms with those cheesy love proclamations, it is quite amusing to watch a serious scripture chanting monk turn into a Romeo, especially when he is played by Tomohisa Yamashita! Hanzawa Naoki is an eye opener of the battle of wits in the world of banking. Proposal Daisakusen is a typical high school/college j-drama with a time travel element. I think all of them are worth watching if you don’t mind spending time for some light-hearted entertainment.
Have a great weekend!

I watched both Into the the white night and Byakuyou and J-Movie left me with much impression than the Korean version,
I watched the J-Movie like 2 years before the Korean and I have the thought after watching that this story is familiar but the feeling is way different.
I remember watching Proposal Daisakusen and crying a lot, the male protagonist is just a wallflower and has no presence but that's him, that's how the girl doesn't noticed him. It has Kdrama adaptation called Operation Proposal with Yoo Seung Hoo.
Takayuki Tamada reminds me of manlier version of Jo Jung Suk (Oh my Ghostess) or I should said that JJS reminds me of cute Yamada,

Hi Sancheezy, now that you mention it, Jo Sung Suk does resemble Takayuki Yamada, though I would say TY is more handsome (^.^)
I've just downloaded both the j-movie and k-movie version of White Night. Oh, so Go Soo is playing Ryouji. Probably it is just coincidence, Go Soo is the lead in another k-movie (Haunters) which has a j-movie adaptation (Monsterz) with Yamada playing the same character.

I'm liking this well enough. Or at least the female lead, who is every kind of awesome in my book.
That plus Neighbourhood Lawyer Jo (which seems like the more mundane but much better written revenge drama alternative to the underwhelming Goodbye Mr Black) are the only k-dramas I'm watching right now. And Page-Turner (pretty good).
<Love That Makes You Cry
Agree with everything here. Still amused by the people who were declaring that (unnamed ;-)) over-the-top drama with grandiose moments as "slice-of-life" because of the lack of story. No, slice of life is a drama like Love That Makes You Cry. Where everything is very ordinary, very every day, but over the course of years adds up to that intensely sincere love that Ren and Oto have and will have until they are old and grey.
And Kengo Kora's a gem. Enjoyed every project of his that I have seen so far.

I love this show too, it's also the only show I'm currently watching.
I view it sort of differently--I don't think the Lovely team is wimpy, I think they are just so beaten down and intimidated by Gold Chemicals (remember when they tried to take a risk three years ago and almost went bankrupt?).
Lovely is at the bottom rung of the business food chain and Gold Chemicals is at the top. I would imagine it's akin to being a small supplier to a massive behemoth like Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart holds all the cards, and small suppliers probably are used to giving in to Wal-Mart's demands. So I think the Lovely team are not wimpy but instead intimidated by the imbalance of power and resigned to their fate.
On the other hand, Ms. Temper comes from Gold Chemicals, so she's used to getting her way, and that habit is not easy to break even when she starts working for a small company. It makes sense to me why the characters are the way they are, even if exaggerated.

It's not just about being wimpy with respect to Gold Chemicals – it's the false-faced behaviour of everyone on the Lovely Team when they are dealing with each other. Like letting Oska do all the work, refuse to help him and then cry crocodile tears when he leaves....
I'd have liked a bit more variation in Team Lovely, like one of them not being wimpy but just being too chill to care or a total dreamer who just is on another planet. But they are all just lazy and wimpy.

April 1, 2016 at 12:21 PM
I agree that they were two faced to Oska by not helping him, but I still don't think they're wimpy or lazy in general. One of the women (the one with the kid) challenged Ms. Temper multiple times in the beginning. The other girl stayed overnight to work on the design. She could have just made any design and left early but it seemed like she was throwing a lot of ideas out. I think they were demoralized rather than just lazy, because if they're constantly getting taken advantage of by Gold Chemicals and having their products get coopted by Gold.

I surprisingly enjoy Ms. Temper a lot too. It's much more of a black comedy than the Taming of the Shrew I expected from the description. It's interesting that Ms. Temper is really the easiest character to root for from the get-go, because she's the one with a spine and high morals despite being a grouch and a schemer, with vindictive bosses and incompetent co-workers around her. It's sort of like watching a hard knocks Mary Poppins descend upon that mediocre Lovely Cosmetics company to whip them into shape. I'm curious how she gets Nam Jung Gi to stand up for himself, because a lot of his troubles are a hell of his own making.

Surprisingly, Ms. Temper is the show I'm currently watching and it's also the only one (Memory and Page Turner are on my list). It's not what I expected, which is a good thing. I thought Oska would be a total pushover b/c he's cowardly, but it's interesting to see a character who's capable and smart choose to be a pushover. I enjoy his mental calculations about the pros and cons of his situation before choosing how to react to it. It's clear that Ok Da-Jung sees right through him, so it'll be fun to see her be the catalyst for his character growth.
But I just love Chansung as the good for nothing younger brother. I always laugh out loud at his scenes.

I'd totally forgot it was April Fools! But it did make me laugh.
Also, loving the drama fever carousel posted above - it's making me giggle, especially since I only found out what Choco Abs meant earlier this week!
Speaking of Choco Abs...is Young-soo/Hae-joon going to be nice to his wife in the long time? Like, ever?
His relationship with her before his death seemed strained and selfish on his side and now it seems selfish again on his side again since he knows he's leaving on the heaven train in a month.
Are they going to have his wife fall in love with the real Hae Joon after he arrives back from the island? :/ I don't know if I can buy that realistically. He's giving the giggles, but he also seems to be very much a numbers man.... Are they going to do a BIG on us?? *Tears hair in anticipation*

Hey, everyone!
Well, I've given up on Goodbye, Mr. Black. It's funny, I never used to drop shows. I was always the type of person to finish what I'd started when it came to dramas, but then it hit me. Why should I waste hours watching a drama I don't care about when there are hundreds of great dramas out there that I haven't seen?
So, yeah. Sorry, Moon Chae Won. Please don't think that I have abandoned you! I mean, I have, but not in a mother-abandoning-her-child type of way. It's more of a girlfriend-abandoning-her-dull-and-boring-boyfriend-who-she-doesn't-love thing. And the boyfriend is the show, not you! Never you! That drama just isn't going anywhere special for me.
In the mean time, I watched the first episode of Page Turner and ADORED it! Ji-soo is too lovable for words, and the amount of laugh-out-loud moments gave me a stomachache! In the best way possible!
That's the only currently airing drama I'm watching. A couple of nights ago I finished Gaksital and it ruined me. Completely ruined me. Can you believe it took me almost a year to finish this drama? I watched the first few episodes and then kind of forgot about it, then watched a few more a few months ago, and then two weeks ago I started it up again and fell in LOVE. By episode 15 it had grabbed me by the heart and wouldn't let go! Good on you, Joo-won and the rest of the Gaksital team! (Yes, even Jin Se-yeon)
After wallowing in despair for approximately one day over My One True Love ending, I tried out Soulmate but couldn't watch more than the first episode. Does it get better? It just didn't interest me at all. I've never been that attracted to straight-up romance dramas unless they're hilarious or heartwarming. I found Soulmate to be neither of those things. Should I give it another shot?
And so after watching that, I picked up Shut Up: Flower Boy Band and I think I've found my new crack. I have a weakness for school dramas and this one just seems perfect. I've only seen the first episode so far but wow, Lee Min-ki is overflowing with charisma. Too bad I know what happens to him in the next episode. Hopefully him being gone will allow the other boys to shine more, though.
That's it for this week! Super excited for a few of the upcoming dramas, namely Entertainer (that teaser!) and Oh Hae-young Again. They both look like so much fun.

Dal-ja's Spring was so refreshing. A "noona"-romance like MNIKSS but without the grumpy mother-in-law .
The scene where all of them wake up in the same room was hilarious. I loved all the characters, the sisterhood and the romance.

Aww, don't feel bad! I used to be like that also, I tried to commit to the shows I chose.. until in one of the DB podcasts, JB and GF convinced me to stop being a kdrama martyr. I realized that it's just not worth my precious time. And as you said, there are other dramas to watch and appreciate. I usually watch 2-4 episodes before I give up. Funny though for some of my fave kdramas, the 4th episode was usually the clincher, to the point that I rewatched those before moving on, haha!

Okay. Shut Up Flower Boy Band ruined me forever. I watched it in less than 48 hours. You will be a wreck by the end (in a good way). I'm forever wanting a sequel series. And Sung Joon. Oh Sung Joon. Hold me. I could write novels about him and his acting.
As for Gaksital, I made the great error of watching it after I finished Gu Family Book. Which also has Sung Joon in it. (Gu Family Book is so good. I broke watching it.) Gaksital left me raw and vulnerable. I finished Gaksital the day before my last semester of college started in September 2013.
I'm excited for Entertainer because it has Kang Minhyuk in it and I basically support any shows that has my CNBLUE in it.

I've rewatched SUPFF so many times it isn't funny. You know, another good link is White Christmas - different genre totally, but a good cast with some cross-over actors and just a good kdrama in its own right. Somehow these 2 kdramas remind me of each other.

Finally watched d-day and I loved it so much I watched all 20 episodes in a day. It started dragging towards the mid/end (and I was tired since it was 3am) but overall I was satisfied with everything.
DotS- I pretty much skip all the scenes of the main couple. Their romance kind of bore me but I like their characters. I wish there was more action in this drama but the scenes we do get (earthquake, rescuing, virus, etc) I quite enjoy

Hello All (quite a new member to open thread),
Happy FIRDAY AND HOORAY TO WEEKEND!
PLUS HAPPY APRIL FOOLS!!
Just finished Six Flying Dragons a couple of days ago, I am currently suffering from major YOO AH IN withdrawal. So I've picked up Sungkyunkwan Scandal - love seeing YAI in his lovely long messy hair is PERFECTION. I think YAI really suits sageuk dramas.. I can literally watch him all day long! In the drama, Song Joong Ki is an extra eye candy (seriously his face is just too damn handsome)! Please recommend more YAI dramas to me!!
That aside, I tried watching Tree Deep With Roots..my insight of the King (Lee Bang Won) has definitely deepen and I somewhat feel sympathetic to him and his actions. Currently, at ep 5 but I am getting a bit bored with Jang Hyuk's character and its really weird seeing a brunch of the same cast from SFD in TDWRs playing different characters. Maybe I need more time before i dwell into TDWRs - my heart is still with SFD (possibly one of the best sageuk dramas I've seen yet).
With Descendants of the Sun - the plot is still very iffy and overly dramatic. Still not completely captivating for me to desperately watch every episode once its subbed. I am partially watching for its BEAUTIFUL CAST (like seriously WHY IS EVERYONE SO GORGEOUS) and its lovely OSTs - their music is definitely killing it with Lyn, K.Will, SG Wannabe, T Mirae, Davichi, and XIA (JYJ) - the biggest OSTs singers of dramas all in one drama. THANK YOU DRAMA TEAM AND KBS hahahaha

Yoo Ah In in SSKS is soooo damn hot isn't he? I stand by my opinion that he looked waaaay better in his mane of glory years back compared to his current skinny BW look. I ended up watching Fashion King out of my love for Ah In before realizing how messy that drama was and abandoning that wrecked ship in ep 5 haha.
Have you watched Secret Love Affair? I only watched cuts on youtube but even then he is really good, add that to sizzling chemistry with Kim Hee Ae.

I stopped Six Flying Dragons at ep. 45 when Bang Won is planning to kill his sweet little brother...I may take it up again in the episode after he does that, but, even though I knew it would happen, it's hard watching YAI do such a thing!
Currently watching Marriage Contract, which is rather enjoyable. Also watched Vampire Detective. DoTS is a little strange; the land Uruk is supposed to be a place like Serbia, you can see all the Orthodox Christian churches and monasteries, icons in the store, etc., but where are these little very non-Slav looking children coming from? I'm only on ep. 2, but Kang Mo-Yeon is massively annoying...arrogant and ignorant, as seem most of these medical ppl in this drama. Song Joon-Ki and Jin Goo are keeping me going.
Hope to start Daebak this week & Neighborhood Lawyer Jo. Waiting **forever** for Viki to sub last 2 eps of The Merchant.
For kicks and giggles, I continue to watch the Hong Kong drama Forensic Heroes II.

Just done watching this week's episode of DOTS. Yes I do love our second couple more, because their love story is more heartbreaking. But I feel like their own stories have not been revealed so much. Anyway not complaining so much, as it is the fate to be a second lead. Hopefully Jin GU & Kim Hi Won will get plenty of offers in the future. They are good ?
The first couple's romance is OK but I don't feel excited on their relationship. But more than the romance, I feel like the first lead's own stories are well-developed. For example, our Big Boss inner struggle in order to protect the lives of everyone. I was teary when he reminiscing his memory with Agus, a friend turn into enemy. He is worried but unable to share his worries with anyone. His inner struggle is real. I also like how Mo Yeon's character developing from beginning until now. She already back in track as a great doctor.
Nowadays the show that I am.really looking forward is The Promise & Ms Temper & Nam Jung Ki. My 2 fav actresses are in this drama, and story is addicting too ☺
Have a nice weekend ahead beanies ❤

(*giggling*) because this is what makes a kdrama a kdrama. Maybe not the first, but I am thinking that You're All Surrounded had all three elements ~
Throw in a broken high heel and a wooden kiss scene with a 360 camera spin and and you've got the basic kdrama signature items! (That is, minus the relationshipwrecks that is).
This is fun!

How about the Piggyback ride? I can't remember a drama with romance where this isn't in the picture.
I love it when dramas subvert this trope, like when Han Groo carried Jeon Woo Jin, or when Lee Sang Woo carrieed Go Du Shim.

Happy weekend, everyone!! Hope you don't get pranked on today, lol!
Dramas for the week:
DotS - although ep 11 wasn't a fave of mine, ep12 more than made up for it!!! What a terrific episode that was- thrilling, exciting, funny, touching, heartwarming and tear-inducing. And just when you thought the drama would go the cliche-d way, it suddenly swerves to a better direction! Loved the surprises I got! Again, I am fascinated with how alot of things go full circle in this drama. Things that were said or shown in passing in previous episodes get brought up later and sometimes flipped on its ear. It shows you that the writers did put serious thought to their material. Also, I like the mature relationships in the show. Despite the fantastical situations, it keeps the show grounded. Excited and a bit sad that there are only 4 eps left :)
Lawyer Jo Deul Ho - Surprised at how fun and zippy it was!! I like this best among the new mon-tues shows!!
Page Turner - loved the 1st ep! And I love the 3 leads!! As expected from this amazing writer.
Marriage Contract - Not completely hooked but still watching. The leads and the kid are adorable! I hope it won't get too makjang or too depressing.
Since I already dropped CBM and waiting for better reviews for GMB, might start Vampire Detective and Ms Temper.

Currently watching ep 40 of Six Flying Dragons and i am completely exhausted lol. Now i hate everyone. I understand the why and how they do what they do, but still i hate them all. But they also kinda amazed me as characters so i can't fully hate them. What to do ?
Btw, this may contain spoilersssss (i hope not?) but...
Anyone else getting annoyed with Bangji? I love Byun Yo Han (so so soo much!) but wow he is such an indecisive, simple-minded character who truly doesn't fit in this hellhole political war despite being the best swordsman and all. It's inline with his initial character as a child but he doesn't show any sign of development after all those years. I even doubt he supported or even understand the length of clashing ideology and political issues, which is pitiful ? Is it intentional, writing inconsistency, or maybe too many characters to handle that they forget to explore our puppy-eyed swordsman? At this point i kinda wish Boonyi, Bangji and Moohyul to go together and building their life while being far, far awaaaaay from both Bangwon and Sambong lol.
On varshow
- watched 2 eps of YOF in Iceland and 4 casts are adorable lovable goofballs of sunshine that truly brightens my day ?
- Han Hyo Joo guesting on 1N2D! Despite knetz rage over her scandal, i am already giddy at the prospect of the members being giddy for her wot wot!
Anyway have a happy weekend beanies! And have fun doing April Mop-ing haha

Woke up with a migraine headache for the first time ever. I wish it was an April Fool's day joke.
I decided to read up on it and I'm pretty sad that chocolate is one of the food that may trigger it *sigh*. I've been eating a lot lately it's no wonder.
I'm watching Imperial Doctress too, basically for Wallace Huo Liu Shi Shi. I'm enjoying it because I'm not expecting a masterpiece, just the usual politics and romance in the era. It's the same timeline as SFD so it's kind of cool to see what was going on in China during that time.

I have already started my devious plans, hehehe!! Time is on my side for sure.
Unfortunately chocolate is "guilty as charged" when it comes to severe headaches. Female hormones -basically prolactine, estrogens and progesterone- just love chocolate but the cranial vessels don't. I think that's the main cause of migraine. I know how it feels, just hang in there. You should eat lots of fruits and vegetables and avoid too much caffeine (another difficult task).
Wallace Huo must be one of the most gorgeous faces I've seen on Asian television. I know he's not the best actor out there but he's able to keep me glued in front of my screen every single time. In Imperial Doctress, all he has to do is just being adorable in beautiful clothes for me to be super happy; a bit shallow, or too shallow? LOL
You're right about the plot, nothing out of the ordinary but the director is doing an excellent job in this one. Good to know that it's the same timeline as SFD; the Qing dynasty is a very big part of several sageuks I've watched so far.

I'm one of the people who waited for SFD to finish so I could watch all at once (I'm up to 18). A really bad part of that choice is not getting to spazz over the show with everyone one week at a time, now I'm sorry I missed that. But the worst part of my decision is that HeadsNo2 may not see my thanks for her wonderful recaps! Dramabeans recaps always make a drama a greater experience but with SFD that's truer than it's ever been. Not only have Heads' recaps helped me with the (seriously impossible) task of keeping straight the overwhelming number of characters and filled in the black hole of my Korean history knowledge but they just make each episode so much bigger and better. I'm very thankful for them, and for all the wonderful informative comments from beanies. Heads, you've gotten some real stinkers over the years and I hope your SFD experience has made up for them! We could feel the love, and right back at you! ??????

Goodbye Mr. Black - have not watched this week's episodes yet. Likely will stick to reading the recaps till the plot moves forward. Still having "not a real OTP" vibes about Black and Swan. I am reminding myself that at this number of episodes, the OTP in Secret was still hating each other.
Ms Temper - really have been enjoying the slapstick and physical comedy.
I've really warmed up to Marriage Contract and really hope that the rumors about the female lead dying in the show aren't true.
Please Come Back, Ajusshi - admittedly disappointed with the last of this week's revelations, especially since it looks like Da-hye kept a big secret from her husband. Up till now, I have been totally on that ship and hoped there would be some way he could have a happy ending with her.

I saw an opening scene of a movie, where the character is watching a drama (think dramaception) but the dialogue is EXACTLY the same as the scene where Han Mi Mo first meets Song Soo Hyuk on the elevator and thinks he is stalking her, when he's just going to his apartment (hahaha, jokes!).

Hello Beanies! And Happy April 1st!
Shows I watched this week:
Please Come Back, Mister - I caught up to episode 11 last night and was rolling on the floor laughing at one scene in particular. This show just cracks me up and I love it, even though it's absolutely crazy. Also, that plot twist!!? Didn't expect that result. I thought it'd be something else.
Descendants of the Sun - I've watched up to episode 10 so far. I really like the humorous moments that break up the often grim portions. Is it my favorite drama ever? Nope. And I almost didn't even give the show a try. But it's decent, and the four leads are all compelling characters I care about. Also, I like Chi-hoon and am not annoyed by his crying at all. The kid's experiencing some traumatizing things. He's young, he's inexperienced, he's lived a cushy life, he's on his own... no wonder he's crying. Not everyone has skin as thick as a soldier.
Jackpot - I watched the first episode, and while it was definitely intriguing, I was kind of hoping for more Jang Geun-suk. Is it common for sagueks to spend the first two episodes or so developing the world and back story? Because I'm not sure I have the patience for all that...
Thoughts on other shows:
Goodbye Mister Black - I've been keeping up with the recaps, but it's still not interesting me. I think I'll pass on GMB.
Page Turner - I'm intrigued! I think I'll start it. And it's supposed to be a really short drama, right, only a few episodes?
Pied Piper - I need a new crime show to watch. Pied Piper, from what I hear, has nothing on Signal (STILL not over the gloriousness that was Signal -- I'm trying to persuade my mom to watch it with me now), but it seems pretty decent. I might give it a go once the drama's finished airing so I can marathon it, haha.

got home late again. It is Tallinn Music Week, I was taking a look at what is going on in the town. stood in the crowd, heard someone praise a performance of my Dads´ choir :-)
so, I went and received that folklore award from the President, neat. Everyone saw me on TV and was totally surprised. and then the speech I prepared.... I threw it away 5 minutes prior to having to speak and just wrote a new one. something about trees. I was terrified a little. then afterwords I spoke to the nice old ladies there - not many young folks among those activists of folklore - and they were really sweet about my silly little speech.
dramas: watching just Come Back Ajussi, and it is hilarious.
Anticipating Ji Sungs´ new drama, despite the writer and everything. their faces seemed really gloomy on the script reading pictures though.
know of any dramas where a bad script would turn into a brilliant show?

yes, choir music is a national hobby in Estonia, but not so many people publicly even talk about the performances or praise them. It is a surprising disparity between how we think we love choir music, but we rarely show that love even the slightest. declarations vs actions.
I collect all the articles that talk about the choir and share their posts on FB, trying to have my input in popularizing them more.

So we had about a 2 week period when the new dramas were about to air and there was little info from the 2 major licensing companies what they'd get. First they each picked up a few things and now it seems like Viki has simply grabbed everything. As far as I can tell right now DramaFever (which recently got bought by Warner Brothers) doesn't have a single exclusive title. They share the rights (in some cases web only and not for apps and rokus) for Daebak/Jackpot, Come Back Ahjussi, Ms. Temper, Marriage Contract, and Vampire Detective; Viki does have first rights on Descendants of the Sun and DF is airing it a few weeks delayed. But Viki also has Monster, Pied Pier, Neighborhood Lawyer, Memory and also the weekend drama Five Kids (with fan channels trying to get the rest of the weekend lineup licensed). That's a huge disparity.
I really worry about this. I like the DF pays subbers and I feel bad Viki has this model where they basically license on behalf of fansubbers and make profit on it. On the other hand I really dislike a lot of DF's editorial policies when it comes to how they translate as sometimes it adds inaccuracies. On the other hand the Viki crews can give translation notes if they want and frankly be more accurate.
Generally good competition is healthy for any market but it feels like things are tilting in a way now...

I can't believe DOTS only has 2 weeks left. I picked a great show to re-enter the world of kdramas. I took a break that was around 2-ish years and it was rough. How did I even survive? There were so many good dramas that came out last year.
Okay, so here is what I'm currently watching, besides DOTS. I'm kinda doing this rotation where I'm watching no more than 2 currently airing shows and the rest are finished so I can binge them.
Jackpot: Really enjoyed the first episode and I have good feelings for this series so far. I'm actively trying to watch more sageuks now and I like it. I've been a huge period drama fan since I was little, and these dramas are starting to draw me in more. (And yes, I have SFD next on my list of shows to watch once DOTS finishes)
Reply 1988: I'm taking my time on this one because 1994 pretty much destroyed me with...I think I can leave it there and we can figure out what I mean.
Sassy Go Go: I love it! It's fun, cute, happy but intense, and just great. Plus, I have a huge love for Eunji.
Jejoongwon: this is about the first modern hospital in Korea and it's pretty good. Again, I'm taking my time on this one.
Next on the watch list:
Six Flying Dragons
Jumong
Oh My Venus
Pinocchio
Sandglass
and...Heirs...I think. I don't know if I'll be able to handle it. I tried when it first aired and failed so hard.

Sandglass is a true Korean classic that will be talked about for years and years. You may recognized Choi Min Soo in his younger years there. He is currently playing King Sukjong in Jackpot.

I don't know if you will be able to watch Heirs after watching DOTS. Both are from the Same writer. But the result is so much different.
I think after I done with DOTS I will never ever go back to watch Heirs.

Haha! Is there really such a huge discrepancy in terms of character and story presentation?

Eunji is great, did you see her in Trot Lovers? Sassy Go Go was fun all around.
Jackpot - I like it way more than I thought, even though I'd watch it for JGS anyhoot.

Pinocchio is great; Oh My Venus is boring. I didn't watch OMV but even my mom, who is a drama addict and doesn't have high expectations for dramas, felt bored and gave up on it.

Hello Beanies!
Happy weekend to all!
Thanks to those last week for the recommendations :)
I finished Healer and having Withdrawls... :(
Due to time constraints I only watched DOTS, Daebek and Werewolf Boy (movie).
Didn't like epi 11 of DOTS but enjoyed 12 and I understand how SJK can be so damn charming- if he can make me fall in love with him as a a wolf who doesn't talk, a charming army captain is easy peasy! ? And also in love with Park Bo Young. ?
Am undecided about Daebek. May watch this week and see how.
But most importantly, am deciding which drama now to start... Such wonderful first world problems ;)

Finally back on the OT after almost 2 weeks of the flu...UGH. It's horrible when you have all this time at home in bed, but are too sick to enjoy even one Kdrama! Much better now.
I'm catching up on Please Come Back, Mister! I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy this show. I've never been a huge Rain fan, but he is really selling it here; Must change my tune about him, I guess. This show keeps me laughing, and the script has stayed on track, so I'm in for the duration.
I had post-Signal letdown, and have hesitated to start anything new. This weekend is for catching up on spring cleaning, and we finally have real sunshine here in the Pacific Northwest, so I'll hopefully accomplish something outdoors before starting up a new Kdrama marathon. Kdrama is best appreciated without a side-helping of guilt.; but then, I never let that stop me before!

That's a hard one; most school dramas tend to be about high school students. I only know a few that are about college students... What's Up, Reply 1994, and Heartstrings/You've Fallen For Me are all set in university (personally I liked the first two much more than the third one).

Has anyone else tried Monster yet? I'm having a difficult time getting through the first episode lol--between the production and the acting it's embarrassing to watch. The script is by no means subtle, but the directing and some of the performances are making it into an unholy cross between a telenovela and some B movie thriller. I mean, everything is just dialed up to 11 lol--the operatic score on blast the whole time, the cheesy, gimmicky camerawork that blows its wad on the flashy stuff and forgets it's supposed to be telling a story, lulzy overacting...aaaaaargh. Jung Bo-seok has still got it, though <3
Also, this is super tangential and maybe this isn't the right place to talk about this, but does anyone here watch Drag Race? This season there's a Korean queen, Kim Chi, and her make up is just unreal. So amazing. Idk, it's just very exciting to see Koreans getting more of a presence in American pop culture and American TV (okay, so drag race isn't exactly mainstream, but still lol).

I tried to watch Monster! It is so over the top. But sometime I watch drama, just for to mock at how ridiculous it is. I don't take anything so seriously, I don't make any commitment to finish it either. If there's bad acting,I laugh at it. If there's cheesy music, cheap camera work and CG, unbelievable and irrational plot, I'm going to say euww, throw some silly comments to the screen, and laugh again.

Yeah, I like to watch this kind of stuff for the lulz myself. I used to watch soap operas whenever I needed to laugh and let off some steam (sadly the soap channel died). I'm just a bit sad because I loved all their other revenge dramas so much.

I'm not surprise about the acting in this kind of genre. The only actors that I was banking on were the veterans, Jung Bo-seok, Park Young-Gyu, Bae Jong-Ok and Lee Deok-Hwa. Jung Woong-In may do more than expected.
The two leads is a big downgrade from Giant. Kang Ji-Hwan is no Lee Beom-Soo and Sung Yu-Ri....leave or take? She's a sure leave. She is beautiful but she would've benefit more from supporting roles than lead roles like what Honey Lee is doing. Neither one has raw talents but one took the time to learn from the ground up.
The young actors that jump start Giant were excellent, Yeo Jin-Goo, Kim Soo-Hyun, Nam Ji-Hyun. Sadly, director Lee Chang-Min is also missing so this is not going to be nearly as good as Giant.
Come hangout at Jackpot. It has a small followers but it has potential to be better than expected. It helps to have a history buff like MrX there too. You won't be disappointed with the actors and that's a promise.

Okay, I will have to try Jackpot! :D I have a hard time imagining myself disappointed with Yeo Jin-goo and Choi Min-soo <3. I might try to hang in there for a couple of episodes on Monster too (I gave up last night 20 minutes into the first one lol), because I loved the writers' other revenge dramas so much, but the directing and the kids' performances are trying so hard to turn this into a soap opera.
Jung Bo-seok has aged really well, though, have to say. It's been 11 years since Shin Don and he doesn't look all that different.

Hello again. I have finally done another toon for DramaFever.
https://www.dramafever.com/news/alternative-ending-for-remember-a-sons-war/
if you want to look at it. I took a long break (and haven't posted much here on dramabeans, either for a while.) Geez, how do I say this without looking like I'm whining??? I am going through cancer again. I'm not in remission, but I'm not getting worse very fast. I just got through with 2 months of oral chemo. The bad news is: the chemo did NOTHING to get rid of the cancer in my liver. But THE GOOD NEWS IS: since the chemo did nothing to the cancer in my liver I Don't Have To Take It Any Longer!!! (Hurray! Because that chemo was nasty.)
Back to topic: I am going to draw a toon for an alternative (better) ending to Cheese in the Trap. However, everyone watching K-Dramas through a filter of their own life's experiences. And when I watched Cheese, the male lead reminded me of a guy (real cute, but insufferably conceited and a jerk) who stalked me in college. So I can't make "Dog Fur" end up with him.
Well, I am going to try to create a better ending, but anyone who shipped the poor actor (who got a raw deal from the director of that Drama) will be miffed.

I am so sorry about the cancer :(
Hope it will go away asap and you don't need to worry about nasty chemo or anything related to chemo ever again >.<
On the other note, looking forward to your cheese toon! I ship Yoojung with Hongseol because the actor is so convincingly cute around her and also bcs of the webtoon ? but still urs sounds interesting too. As well as that stalking college boy tale of yours lol

Your alternate ending is hilarious, Wag_a_Muffin, and makes more sense! Poor Seungho! No rice or no memory, tough call.
Time to write your own kdrama, I'd say, hey?
Can't wait for the alternate Cheese Fondue ending, too.
Hope you're feeling better soon.

Is it OK if I pick on a bond of contention in an open thread? I didn't know the existence of Lee Seo-Jin until wonderful days..i stated checking his previous works...then ended up seeing everywhere the infamous line 'he broke up over a phone'...When you see comments appreciating his show or him in the show , it immediately followed by somebody making a snarky comment 'you think he is cool! guess what! he broke up over the phone'..annoyingly this repeats over and over...I am not a fan(yet :)...)..but this is my thoughts...i know i am beating up a dead horse...but for some reason, the horse will not lay dead..somebody keeps reviving it...
1.I read that she said she didn't know the reason..if it is true what they say about his mom, then she definitely knew the reason. By saying she didn't know the reason, he threw him out in the open for all the attack.
2.The break up over the phone..she said he sent a message over the phone..but it doesn't mean they didn't talk before...from reading it all now, it wouldn't have been out of blue either...
3.People have biggest complain about how he didn't explain and they all felt betrayed...but what could he say? If his mom was truly the reason(my apology for being disrespectful to his mom), he cant say 'yeah! my mom was the reason'. He is not going to say anything bad about his girl either.Reading all about him going in hiding, it felt like he still cared for her.
4.A person who still cant get over his fall out with his dad will not hurt another parent. I know it is hard for people to understand, especially people from west. When it is considered meddlesome in west, it is normal and that's what family is all about in East. I would rather hurt myself by breaking up before hurting my parent. Especially if I have already done something before and regret it every day of my life.
5.If this dude kept his silence all this years irrespective of the whole internet mud slinging and preserve it for years, that shows true character.
6.Not all of the celebrity breakups played like his. It just because both party kept silence. That doesn't mean nobody was fault. Unfortunately in his case, she was hasty and played victim (i don't think that was her intention. It just happened and it was too late to take it back)
Sorry for this very long post..If he is at least sincere 50% of the times as he is in his variety show, he seems like a person with sincerity and integrity...
Apologies if this message upsets anybody..
