Friends, noodles, and revenge in Master–God of Noodle’s teasers

The more promos and teasers I see for KBS’s Master–God of Noodle (it kills me that the official title uses Noodle instead of Noodles—like there exists one ultimate noodle to rule over), the more I feel like there’s a disconnect between drama and title. One is going for dark and intense, while the other… well, not so much.

The teasers are pretty well put-together and vengeful hero Chun Jung-myung sure looks like he’s full of dark fury as the man on a mission to reclaim his stolen life from a villainous Jo Jae-hyun. But the second you say God of Noodle, it’s like all the carefully built-up suspense, style, and intrigue kinda falls flat. Like a limp noodle, you could say.

I know the title isn’t really up for debate since the drama is based on a manhwa with that name (the drama has added the Master prefix), so I’m doing my best to look past it. The show released its first comic-book-inspired teaser last month, intentionally paying homage to Marvel with its dramatic styling, and the second teaser below takes a similar approach.

Below that, we’ve got four regular teasers that focus more on the central story and conflict, with Chun Jung-myung telling us how his enemy (Jo Jae-hyun) used everything he could to build up an ordinary restaurant into a huge castle, wondering if he’d be able to take him on and steal it away. He also tells us how his father was murdered at the hands of Jo, vowing to return to kill him. Jung Yumi and Lee Sang-yub play the hero’s school friends, whom we see briefly, while the hero continues to seethe in the face of his mocking enemy. Although we’re told his revenge comes via mastering noodle-making, I’m going to believe that’s mostly a metaphorical way to explain that he’ll challenge the master and win. The noodles are incidental, right?

Master–God of Noodle takes up the Wednesday-Thursday slot on KBS beginning April 27.

I just realised that should be -

One Noodle to rule them all, one Noodle to find them
One Noodle to bring them all and with the gluten bind them

(because gluten is a literal binding agent, geddit? :D)

ROFL, I'm finishing up Punch right now and, I have to admit, I'm finding all Jo Jae-hyun's epic jjajangmyun-eating scenes hilarious in light of his casting in this drama. Lol, did he use it as his audition tape? (Not that he needs to audition, obviously...)

Okay, but in all seriousness. This actually looks kind of good? Who knows, maybe I'll be so impressed by this drama that the title will eventually stop making me laugh.

I remember when the MMO City of Heroes was launched in Korea the official title was City of Hero and we were told something like certain words don't have plurals in Korean so they cut the English to match? Still, the name is ... jarring in English. Plus I keep thinking of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

LOL, you are right, the title destroys all the intensity meant in a revenge drama.
Maybe The Noodle is going to get revenge on the whole setup -the cast, the audience, etc.
That will lead to a whole new spin-off sequels, no?
Noodle Begins, Rise of the Planet of Noodles, Noodles Forever which will ultimately be a prequel to Flower Boy Ramyun Shop

How bad do I want to watch a drama called Rise of the Planet of Noodles now? I'm sure it would be ramyazing.

But how would a noodle get revenge? Choke someone to death? I'm pretty sure it would die in the process. The Noodle must be one tough cookie to go for a suicide mission like that.

HAH! I imagined Anaconda as Noodle.

Perhaps the whole premise of the movie/drama would be to be the Ultimate Noodle - like One Punch man- The One Choke Noodle.

100 stretches, 100 coils, 100 slams on the board and 100 roll-in-the-floor routines in 1 day.

Ugh, that got me thinking more and I had to get it out of my system.

The Noodle then travels to Slimido( the Noodle version of Silmido) and then gets trained by this limp noodle who was once a strong noodle. You could even include 100 dips in soup broth in the training routine.

In the end you have an Anaconda style noodle to get revenge.

How can I watch this drama now? Lol

The noodle's way of getting revenge is to split himself up into more noodles: 6 to be precise. The Six Flying Noodle Doughgers will whisk through the air and lodge themselves into the enemy, that is, if they do not dry up midway.

My mind is now busy imagining an Anaconda Noodle Hydra. Cut off one bit and and two more will grow - it'll be the longest Revenging Noodle the world has ever seen!

Maybe who Noodle really wants revenge on is Pasta? You know, for stepping on it's turf and all? Maybe Noodle is really insecure, somewhere deep down in it's noodle-bowels, and is afraid that it'll be replaced? Or maybe it's jealous of Pasta's status? The Noodle is such a complex character.

It's hardly off-topic to comment on an actor mentioned in the post, especially when he's so awesome :)

I really hope he moves to leading roles soon, at least in a cable drama or something, please. I'll definitely be checking this out because I really do like the cast quite a bit. I'm just not sure whether it will be something I stick with...

I read Master as Pasta and was so confused. LOL

And is this a Dragons reunion? I heard Lee Shin Jeok is here too. And the killer guy in Signal! So happy to see him in another drama. He's really good.

The title is so absurd but one of my favourite dramas is Baker King Kim Tak Gu so I can't really say anything.

The ESL teacher in me is slowly dying at the singular Noodle! But I agree with some commenters above that as far as drama titles go, this one isn't that bad. (King 2 Hearts takes the cake--love that drama but never understood how that title was created!)

I was really looking forward to this drama (Chun Jung Myung!), but those filters... *huge sigh* I tend to lose all interest when the colors are so bland, dull and life-sucking.
I blame Danish cinema...

I have to say, kind of loving the whole "noodle" instead of "noodles". Gave me a good chuckle. It reminds me of the trend where people don't know how to spell "definitely" and end up writing "defiantly"; "I will defiantly watch this show!". Because, clearly, watching that drama is an act of rebellion not to be taken lightly.
You can't help but love those kinds of errors :)

I like the "dull" colours much more though. I think they suit the revenge theme. I almost blinded myself trying to watch One More Happy Ending (which I dropped quite promptly) because it was SO bright.

Not a fan of the way too bright either, I guess I just like it when it's more natural? Danish movies and shows are ALL dull colours, so I've seen so much of it that it's become klichéed. It's become the obvious choice and even though I agree that it suits the theme, I also think that sometimes a contrast will deliever a better emotional impact. Or just making the surroundings look realistic, like this person consumed by revenge could actually be the guy from your local noodle shop, can often be a better option imo.

(That probably didn't make any sense. It's 2:30 in the night here haha)

Jo Jae-hyun is a culinary master who created a noodle empire/restaurant chain, murdering our hero's father along the way for his secret recipe. Chun Jung-myung, who once shunned the way of the noodle, must get close enough to kill him by becoming his protege. This requires rigorous training because Jo is elitist scum, and Chun's noodles not only have to be delicious but also have to disguise the taste of the specially brewed poision that will take Jo Jae Hyun's life, for "those who live by the noodle will die by the noodle". (Bonus points if Chun has a logic-defying, comic-inspired immunity to the poison.)
If I'm right, do I get a prize?

I don't want to jinx it, but somehow when I read the drama title, Master-God of Noodle, somehow it reminds me of God of Trade - Gaekju 2015.

And in that particular drama, the trade story is somewhat lost in the mountain and end up being a finding the murderer drama....

I just hope the 'Noodle' in the actually serve a purpose and play an important role in the drama...
