Joo-won headlines youth sageuk remake of My Sassy Girl

Wait, what? The drama remake of My Sassy Girl — the 2001 movie starring Cha Tae-hyun and Jeon Ji-hyun — is a sageuk? Is it going to be called My Sassy Joseon Lady? Apparently we’re going to be up to our eyeballs in youth sageuk this year, because My Sassy Girl just cast Joo-won (Yong-pal) to headline the drama remake, which will be his last project before enlisting in the army. (Gah, don’t remind me! I guess I should just be happy he’s doing one last drama before going, but still!)
My Sassy Girl is a Korean rom-com classic, a campus romance about a cute, hapless boy who meets a gross but intriguing girl who kind of makes him her slave/boyfriend and always keeps him dangling on a hook. It’s an unconventional romance but utterly adorable. I’m still ragey about the fact that they’re making a sequel, My Sassy Girl 2, about Cha Tae-hyun’s character Gyun-woo getting dumped and meeting a NEW sassy girl. W.T.F. I refuse to even acknowledge that sequel’s existence, because it negates the ending of the beloved original, and I don’t know why anyone would do such a stupid, stupid thing.
ANYWAY, this drama remake has been in the works for a few years, so it doesn’t come out of nowhere. I’m just curious as to why they chose to do a sageuk version, since it’ll affect the basic story just by virtue of the time period. Still, at its core My Sassy Girl is a romance driven by two opposite personalities — she’s the beautiful but bossy alpha girl, while he’s the classic beta male — and could be translated into any setting pretty easily.
I do think it’s super cute that Joo-won will be playing Cha Tae-hyun’s character, since they were bros on 1 Night 2 Days for a little while. Joo-won would make an adorable Gyun-woo, except for the fact that he’s too handsome. They’re going to have to do an ugly duckling transformation on him (which he’s done for movies like Fashion King), otherwise I’d never buy him being the dorky guy who gets pushed around by a girl half his size. I’m sure he’ll be fantastic in the role, because when is Joo-won ever not fantastic? The real question is, where on earth are they going to find the actress to play Jeon Ji-hyun’s character? It’s the role that made her a superstar. Talk about a lot to live up to.
The drama will be co-produced by Raemong Raein (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) and Joo-won’s agency, Sim Entertainment. It doesn’t have a broadcaster yet, but it plans to be 100% pre-produced for a simultaneous broadcast in Korea, China, and Japan, and will begin shoots in July.

Jo Bo-ah would be a great choice, after watching Surplus Pirincess I realised she's pretty A++ at comedy.
Shame she's stuck in second lead for Monster and that's going to tie her up for the next 3 months.

I approve either Park Bo Young and Moon Geun Young, both are talented ladies with versatile acting skills and don't afraid to challenge themselves.
PBY is great option 'cause she already proved herself playing sassy girl, in sageuk no less. However MGY is also a formidable actress, though I don't think she ever play a character like this, but it would be a challenge for her and I really miss her in sageuk!

The movie was terrible, with a few shining moments thanks to CTH. Also, I have no idea how anyone finds the main female character even remotely entertaining or attractive, personality wise.
The amount of male celebs that claim JJH's character is their ideal type is kinda hilarious considering I found her to be completely unlikable.

I don't know.. Most of my male friends hates Korean drama and always tease me and our other friends for always watching it but when they saw My Sassy Girl (we watch it once as a group of friends), literally all the boys in our circle of friends like JJH. They say the movie is funny and they would love a girl like JJH's character. When I ask them why, they say Alpha girls with attitude is more appealing than a goody goody girl. And all of the boys literally nods and fist bump each other agreeing to it. So I can believe all the Korean Celebs that say JJH's character is their ideal type.

But maybe it was good decades ago? I mean, this is not as bad as 100 days with mr arrogant - why the heck was it such a bomb? I watched this few weeks ago and it's like a pg13 version of 100 shades of grey, but even sillier.

I don't think it overrated. It was suitable for the time it was released. I think if you watch it at that time you would fall for the charm too. I just think that it's different if you watch it back then and now.. The classic movie like Sassy Girl, My Girl And I, Windstruck were all great back then...

Nope, don't care for My Sassy Girl at all and I can never stand "sassy girl" type of characters in dramas/films either – they are just bullies, who somehow ended up glorified in k-entertainment.
(I do like JJH as an actress though.)

She is very much aware of what works for her type of acting and I think that's why she is staying far away from sageuks.

Maybe it hasn't aged well, but I didn't like it either; the female character was too unlikeable. I was expecting a romantic comedy, but there was neither humour nor romance to the story.
Perhaps in the context of a tradition of shrinking-violet heroines it was a radical departure (I am not familiar with the history of Kdrama, so I am only guessing), and if that is the case, I appreciate the effort. However, I am not in a hurry to see a remake. The sageuk setting is a little dangerous too; it invites another Taming-of-the-Shrew story where a woman's strong personality is seen as deviance, played for comedy, and ultimately neutralised.
But anyway, let's wait and see which way the message goes, I suppose...

If you watch it till the end, you'll realize it's not the usual romantic comedy. It's actually very dark if you consider everything that happens from the female lead's POV.
Sassy Girl was one of the very first dramas I watched and it will always hold a special place in my heart. :)

What exactly is the charm? That the original Sassy Girl is unlikeable, or that we may be in for the Taming of the Joseon Shrew? :)
I did watch the film until the end; I just couldn't find any redeeming quality in the female lead, so I couldn't sympathise with her, or understand the male lead's masochism. Granted it's been a while since I saw it, and I might have a different opinion the second time around. In any case, I dislike portrayals of domineering women, because they seem to me to carry the sexist message that a strong personality in a woman is unreasonable and unpleasant (insert long rant about Fantasy Couple; couldn't get past episode 5).
With all its faults (hello gayness), I think that Ho Gu's Love did a much better job by showing a sympathetic version of alpha female/beta male dynamics. Ho Gu was kind and sweet in general, not only weak towards women, and the female lead was dealing with a difficult situation, not pushing Ho Gu around for the heck of it. If writers want to be original that way (how sad that it counts as originality), characters need to have a little more depth.

I watched it when it was just released in Asia back in the days and loved it since it was something fresh and new to me. But I came to appreciate it a lot more after I found out that it's based on a true story and there was really a guy who fell for such a girl. lol

No you are not the only one. Because of this movie, I couldn't bring myself to watch "You who came from another star for a very long time". When I tried to watch this drama I was turned off immediatly because of the actress. Finally I did watch the drama because my cousin begged me to watch it with her, and I don't regret it, but still because of the movie my Sassy girl, it's hard for me to like Jeon Ji hyun.
I don't find it even remotly sweet, entertaining or fun when somebody is bullied in a relationship, may it be the girl or the boy and it makes me wonder when people find it "cute" when somebody is in what looks like an unhealthy relationship.

She's so tiny and adorable that you want to put her in your pocket. Except that in here, she's a Alpha girl. Their height difference alone will be fantastic. I prefer her in a real sageuk like King and I. She did a better job than her older version.
She would be a better fit with Song Joong Ki in a more conventional sageuk or a fusion sageuk like Conspiracy in the Court. A quality sageuk that requires the use of the brain and entertaining at the same time.

I don't know what makes me jump more? Joo Won in a Segeuk (it's his 1st Sageuk right?) or Joo Won in Sassy girl's drama remake. Although i am not sure whether i can see anyone other than cha tae-hyun as Gyeon woo (EEEE!) but since it's Joo Won - i see anything Joo won is in :D
I'll just wait to see who they cast into the shoes of Jun Ji hyun - an impossible task i feel

They need to cast a really good female lead to match Joo Won's standard. Even though his drama choices are always not very great, he is one of the greatest young actors I've ever seen on my screen. Goodluck to the production house to find a suitable match for him this time.

I actually thought of Yoona , i think she could pull of this type of role. People don't give her enough credit ,she has great comedic timing, who doesn't believe me can watch first five episodes of Prime Minister and I. She maybe lacks in melodramas, but she is really good in rom coms.
Also she is tall and beautiful but kinda tomboy-ish just like JJH in original version.

No idols please. ... Yoona is ok in PMI but not on the level to do a role like this.
They need to pick a real actress, but the only idol I can accept in this role is someone like Jung Eunji. She has the force and charm to carry off this kind of role even if she's not pretty.

Like you pointed out Eunji is not pretty enough. Aside from having fierce character, this girl is supposed to be tall and statuesque with classic Korean beauty, real Aplha female. Even in a new movie shes played by Victoria , who is extremely beautiful. So Eunji just doesn`t fit the bill ,sorry.

Victoria's acting is dire, and that's being kind. I'd much rather watch Eunji, who is appealing in a far more unconventional way that actually unexpectedly fits characters like The Girl, and as Reply 1997 showed, can make even a loud, flawed brat of a heroine endearing.

She's a goddess imo ;D It's not that Eunji is not pretty enough, but I can agree with the "tall and statuesque, real alpha female", that's what I totally see in Victoria from the MNSG trailer. Ppl here have mention in the previous comments about Oh Yeon Seo, and from what I have seen in Comeback mister, she is totally rocking the fierceness, gorgeousness, tallness, alpha femaleness, hahah, I love her character so much!

Casting the right leading lady is crucial though.

I don't really mind who will become his sassy girl as long as they got good script and that's matter. Besides, as Joo Won always said he values relationship and the filming process more than everything.
Also, it's not like we could find anyone who is liked by everyone.

Omo, I was scrolling down to see if anyone would mention about the movie sequel and I saw your comment! I just wanna say I am also excited for the upcoming movie My New Sassy Girl! I really like Cha Tae Hyun's drama and I watch 1N2D regularly and Victoria Song is my Queen and bias in f(x). Also watched her previous work, recent being My Beautiful Secret, I like her acting, she is so good when it comes to emotional scenes. Judging from the trailer, Victora's character is so kickass and I prefer the Korean version of MNSG, because it's undubbed, I can hear their original voices, kekeke! I wish Victoria would have more filming work in Korea after she has done tons in China. Lastly, I am up for a saeguk drama with Joowon!

I'm watching some really old shows and hoping that by some miracle, Jung Ha Yeon has been working on a script during the last 2+ years. He totally changed the way I view sageuks and the history.

Hey, at least we have old shows! :) Right now I'm not watching much of anything. I get in a couple episodes of Im Kkeok Jung every few weeks, but I'm concentrating on rereading Game of Thrones. The show is about to overtake the books and I've decided I'd rather watch it live than try to hide from spoilers forever...I have four books to read by April lol.
Sorry, tangent. I guess it's sort of related...Game of Thrones is like as close as the west gets to sageuk lol.

It's okay, I'm just a giant fantasy nerd lol. It's a series of fantasy books that got picked up by HBO. The writer is very slow and has finally fallen behind the adptation--the show will be wrapped up in two years but it might take him like 10-15 to write the last two books.
It looked like Jackpot might be okay? And I've been meaning to watch Monster (Jung Bo-seok <3). But as you said, I'm not in a hurry to check them out, either.

Yes, you should check it out and X's metacap. I'm enjoying it so far. Who knows, it might be the dark horse for the year.
I watched Giant right when it started because I love the young actors and they did a great job so I never look back after the 1st eps.
I'm not feeling that excitement from these leads so I'll be watching Jackpot for now.

JOO WON!!!! I'm currently watching Gaksital (with only two episodes left!!!!) so I'm all about Joo Won right now. I don't wan to be reminded that he's about to go off to the army, it's too sad. :(
While I love Joo Won and think he is excellent in basically every role he has done (that I've seen), sometimes the projects he picks don't end up being the best... but then other times he picks up gems like Gaksital, sooo I hope this will be a gem, not a dud (like Level 7 Civil Servant, iiick).
I'm excited to see who the leading lady will be!

I'm on the fence about this. I feel like My Sassy Girl is overdone now and needs to be let go of. When I first watched the movie it was on the fence about it too, but I learned to appreciate it better after watching is prequel "Windstruck". That being said, I still wish Joo Won chose something better as his last project before enlistment. If I were to choose a female lead, I would go with Park Bo Young as well.

That being said, I am not a huge fan of either saguks or of MSG. But Joo won is in it and I have to watch it. I just hope they cast good female lead opposite him this time and not any noona. An actor and a performer like him deserve a good drama before his enlistment. Meanwhile, I am gonna continue doing my happy dance and pray for his success <3

I've never actually seen My Sassy Girl, so I don't know what it's about. But from the description it sounds hilarious. Joo Won will be great in this, I've no doubt. And I, personally, think Jung Eun-ji would be great in the lead female role. I can definitely see her as a bossy alpha female. ? I'll be looking forward to this!

I am more hopeful that this is a pre-produced drama. It is weird because even though I like Joo-won (his huge fan to be honest) I haven't really enjoyed any of his dramas entirely. Every drama must have some faults (not with him! He is the only one who saves the dramas). PLEASE I want this to be a good drama!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, I'm not even sure how they'd extend this story to a 16 episode drama (assuming it'll take on the usual rom-com length). I didn't think the movie was all that special but I also didn't see it in 2001, so...
Anyway, Joo Won really should stick with dramatic roles. His comedy dramas/movies frankly suck. Everytime he's deviated away from the heavy, high intensity roles, he's looked so ordinary on top of being in godawful projects. L7CS, Cantible Tomorrow, Fashion King - ugh they're all simply terrible.
