Han Hyo-joo, Lee Jong-seok confirm new MBC melodrama W

Remember this? I’m sure you do, since it’s the new drama that’s been courting Lee Jong-seok (Pinocchio, Doctor Stranger) and Han Hyo-joo (Love, Lies, Beauty Inside) to headline. The new drama, called W, now has confirmations from both stars and a green light for a broadcast this summer on MBC.

The new project is a pretty exciting mix of cast and crew, since it comes from writer Song Jae-jung of Nine and Queen In-hyun’s Man, and PD Jung Jae-yoon of the hit com-com She Was Pretty. They’re still being very tight-lipped about the story, so all we know so far is that it’ll be a 16-episode “romantic suspense melodrama” about a thirtysomething man and woman. Heck, I don’t even know if the title is Double You or W.

Han Hyo-joo hasn’t done a television series since 2010’s Dong Yi, and has had a number of successes in film that have kept her busy since. She’s really grown on me in the last few years, and I especially loved her in her recent movie Beauty Inside. Lee Jong-seok doing a new drama is far more common an occurrence around these parts, but I’m excited for the team-up since I think they’ll make a good pair, and they’ll be working with a strong writer who will actually deliver on the romance and the suspense.

Shoots are scheduled to begin in May, and W is slated to follow Lucky Romance on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in July.

But yeah, I cant be more excited than this, maybe i CAN be more excited than this when the drama actually airs! I. CAN'T. WAIT.

Hotdamn, this guy is such a noona killer, and I've been dying for a drama with the kind of heartfelt feel good male lead that Lee Jong Suk tends to play. A little iffy about the pairing, does anyone know how Han Yoo Joo is like in romantic Melos ?

Is she that much older than Lee Jong Suk ? I've only ever seen her on Running Man and she's one of their best guests.

0

@Bam they only have around a 2 year age difference, so they are actually nearly the same age.

0

Ah Han Hyo-Joo has been acting for so many years I keep having the impression that she's already in her thirties. On the other hand Lee Jong-suk has a baby face.

0

As much as I am fond of HHJ, her acting in Dong Yi wasn't good (she kept using the same mannerisms over and over and over again) - but the directing sucked and as a consequence, most of the cast, w/ a few exceptions, acted badly (including little Kim Yoo-jung).

Both Park Ha-sun and Jung Yu-mi, in smaller roles, outshone HHJ.

Anyhow, not fun of the pairing - HHJ seems like she could break LJS.

0

She's great!she's dubbed as mellow queen in movies! most of Hyo Joo's movie is a mellow genre..

0

I believe han hyo Joo did a great job in Dong yi her mannerisms in that drama is what exactly the PD asked her to do and how to portrayed Dong yi character but if needed for her character to be serious she nailed it!dont compare dong yi to other character as i believe if they were the one portrayed dong yi I don't think the drama would have been that successful hyo joo did great as dong yi..

0

Dong Yi's PD was absolutely horrible.

Aside from Jin Ji-hee, Bae Soo-bin, Jung Jin-young, Park Ha-sun and Jung Yu-mi - just full of bad overacting (and that included the young and talented Kim Yoo-jung).

Takes a bad PD to ruin the performances of both the young and old Dong Yi.

0

she was awesome in the movies "heaven's postman" and "always. I also liked her in drama "spring waltz". all of the mentioned are on the melo side.

This whole time I was under the impression it was called "Double You" since it's about time travel supposedly and parallel realities, I thought that went hand in hand with the title. But 'W' has a better ring to it and it still is pronounced the same maybe it can be an entendre?

No, Im Siwan got that role. I'm still bitter Jongsuk had to give up that role for a Chinese drama. Thank goodness he left his agency after that.

0

That's really gonna come to bite him cause it would be two amazing roles he had to turn down because of his agency both of which went to Im Siwan, after Misaeng.

0

I'm so happy, I've been craving for my Jong Suk fix. The leads, writer director and story seem promising, I just hope that the chemistry is there. A show can be downright amazing but I'd drop it if the leads had no selling spark. I don't know anything about Han Hyo Joo as an actor but LJS seems to have chemistry with just about anyone from Park Shin Hye to Seo In Guk, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

This could either be the best thing after Signal or a train wreck depending on how much MBC will tweek the story to suit them and the director they have for this show. The name for the show (W) is already sounding better than Ardently, Casually which I've seen been referred by about 5 different variations for names from different portal sites.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, 2016 is stacking up to be the best kdrama lineup in the history of well, ever. Lol. I don't think I've ever been more excited for these GREAT pairings that we're gonna be blessed with this year.

Arbitrarily Fond
Hwarang
Moonlight drawn by Clowns (please accept Kim Ji Won and Sungjae!)
Scarlet Heart: Ryeo
Lucky Romance

I think I am booked with kdramas until winter lol.

Required fields are marked *

But if this show is going up against Arbitrairly Fond I'm not so sure how it's going to fair, not because I think that show will be anywhere near to this one one considering what we know about the plot and writer directors for both plus the casting, but because I've seriously lost trust in Koreas credibility to judge good shows apart from bad ones. Back when LJS was going IHYV, it was Heirs *barf* that broke all records and came out ahead of both Secret and every other show that year. And more recently shows like Signal get little to no recognition or love and DOTS is breaking all records, I'm not hating on Descendants but the storyline isn't exactly original. At least nothing compared to what Signal was.

Required fields are marked *

Idk how to said this but Secret got lots of love in SK and I-viewer that watched it, maybe because DB didn't recapped it seems overshadowed but it did pretty well and even beat Heirs in early running,
now to Signal and DoTS, tbh everybody praises Signal, you can't even said bad things about it, 8,7 average and peak at 12% for cable is very big.
it can't be compared because even if Signal is that brilliant is and heart tugging, broader audience didn't feel fit in, most people watch tv/show for relaxed and enjoying the show's heart and not think about how the underworld is going crazy with mystery (dun dun dun dun).
People appreciate Signal, that's why we herd it here and there, but most people now related to DoTS because it transcend age and gender to be loved,
it is well executed and enjoyable,

my point is, Secret is big, Signal is big, they maybe not the biggest buzz in the year but they don't leave unappreciated, I hope people stop with this more deserved/undeserved things cause if you really looked at DoTS, you would understand why it's so popular, is rating is the only things matter?
not all people love thriller and mystery,
it's like saying Hannibal or Gotham is undeserved their high praise critics because of How I Met Your Mothers or Supernatural popularity.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

why are u comparing a cable show with a network show? that makes no sense. Signal had amazing ratings for cable. Like off the wall. I think they beat or matched Misaeng even? Signal did great and it will (has?) win likely win quite a few drama awards in SK. (I mean to compare, Misaeng was like a wild smash hit and pop culture phenomenon over there when it was airing, but it never got 20+ ratings because it is a cable program. and the way ratings are measured in this day and age isnt exactly ideal or infallible. and it ofc doesnt take into account all the other ways people watch things nowadays.
So I wouldnt worry about it too much. (agree about Heirs tho. yikes at how poplar that was)

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I think maybe they mean even being cable or network show they all seem to have a lot of disparity to fan appreciation and the amount of awards they get. Just see that Kim Tae Hee got best actress for Yongpal and best actor was given to Lee Jun Ki over Joo Won when Joo Won carried the entire show and Scholar was an average show at best. Even I Remember You which had hands down some of the most amazing performances of the year didn't get a single award. Daesung was given to Kim Soo Hyun and not Ji Sung and Ji Sung played 7 roles! Rookie award was given to Lee Soo Hyuk over Ji Soo, when LSK isn't even a rookie! Actors Yeon Jeong Hun and Choi Won Young got no recognition for their chilling performances.

It's always been Pretty stars>>>>>>>>plot/acting capabilities and then ratings>>>>>>>>quality

0

@twotwo
The korean award show is mostly bias , but the public and their popularity doesn't.
Almost all the comment point out about jisoo, jisung, joo won, no one take that award when they knew there's better winner, how about punch, it's well received and well awarded.
People appreciate good things which yikes tend to disagree...

It's not always visual that make the drama successful, people praise Misaeng and Signal to high heaven, dare to said something bad, they judge you don't have taste but in this case eps DoTS, it's deserved, it wasn't some sort of heavy crimes.

0

@dena I understand what you mean but more often than not it seems that good shows like I Remember You fly straight off th radar. No mention of it anywhere in awards and not good ratings, I don't even know if it god good critic review in Korea but internationally it was very praised. Actors like Seo In Guk are so underrated when a lot of DOTS's success is entirely because people love Song Joong Ki.

0

@twowoo
I really need to said this
DoTS success doesn't lean on SJK alone, he is the lovable actor but he at the time the drama start wasn't kim soo hyun, jun ji hyun, hyun bin level in popularity,
It because they also got SHK and THE EPITOME of nice guy, nice people.
When all drama is about bad people get their way, unfairness, impossible shenanigans, revenge and there's one drama about humanity, romance, mature interactipn and not light nor dark enough, people take i terest and appreciate it.
It wasn't just because of the visual, even if people now is in SJK craze, it because they appreciate nice guy played by fine actor, but it wasn't because Song Jong Ki alone.

0

@TwoWoo, I think you are mistaken re LJK being given best actor over Joo Won, cos LJK didn't win any awards for Scholar.

0

I don't know if this reply was meant for me, but anyway...

I totally agree with you. The fact that DOTS is hitting insane ratings numbers and it's a drama with less of a plot than cringtastic Heirs, which was literally about 18 year old chaebols lol, is kind of laughable.

AF will probably do well because the writer knows how to amp up the love to die for, epic makjang storylines that tend to do well ratings wise. However, I question whether the hype for the AF cast is actually going to bring in ratings.

I mean weren't Korean netizens going crazy over SJS and SMA's pairing, yet OMV flopped harder than some dramas will a lesser known cast.

AF, though, I'm going to assume is going to be a lot more compelling for viewers plot wise than some random gym/chaebol/weight loss themed drama LMAO.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

with AF, the real draw isn't the leads, it's the writer - Lee Kyung-hee is a veteran melo writer with a long string of hit melos to her name.

OMV didn't have a good writer, this one does (yes, her series are flawed and this pair are the weakest leads she's had in the last ten years, but the Korean network tv-watching public positively eats up her stuff).

I would actually say the writer of Nine and QIHM is better, but that was on cable - there's a risk MBC might remove or water down what made those shows work on tvN.

0

I'm on the same page as Yikes, I've really lost trust in Koreas ability to tell good shows apart from bad ones. Where the good ones might get recognition in the form of highly praised critic reviews they never do seem to become publicly loved or appreciated and don't make near to the kind of ratings the bad to average ones with *pretty* stars seem too. You can hate on Heirs all you want but it still swept every award that year and came out as the biggest hit as much as it makes you cringe.

Required fields are marked *

YIKES, who is calling this Arbitrarily Fond? I just had a full-body shudder at that name so I want to clarify what the title is: It means "Recklessly/Carelessly and Ardently." Both words are adverbs, and the first one does not mean in any way arbitrary; the title is meant to contrast the lightness of the first word with the sincerity of the second. We're calling it "Lightly, Ardently."

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Whoops, that must have been autocorrect. i meant to type Ardently*

0

LMFAO.

I've seen this drama referred to with about four different titles and about a dozen variations on those titles by the international media/kdrama watchers.

It seems like every news site/blog is using a different title/variation.

0

KBS is calling it "Uncontrollably fond" :/ https://youtu.be/08NxeEwK4Es

0

I've been calling it Carelessly Tender myself, since the Korean word for Ardently in the title can be both an adverb and an adjective.

0

I'm on the same page as you, I find the casting and premise of these dramas are pretty lacklustre. Even Ji Sung went the easy route this year and decided to do an idol drama, and I'm always ready to watch anything he's in.

Maybe it's the time travel aspect and the fact that I've really liked the writer/director on board for W's work previously but this so far seems the only thing I'd be willing to check out.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I also find the casts.... so odd.

In Uncontrollably Fond, the second leads are sooooo much more interesting. KWB is okay but still not enough of a reason to watch a drama, and Suzy is a no-no – and they are so going to be outacted by Im Joo-Hwan and Im Joo-eun (why do these two still not have lead roles?).

Lucky Romance I would have liked to have tried for Ryoo Joon-Yeol but I have not yet managed to get through a single Hwang Jung-Eum drama (in part because her kind of acting doesn't work for me, in part because the dramas she chooses always have a kind of humour/characters that I don't care for).

Han Hyo-joo hasn't impressed me with her acting, but Lee Jong-seok did well in several dramas, enough for me keep an eye on the projects he takes on. Because of him and the writer involved with W, I'll probably give this a try – indeed, the writer is the most compelling reason here.

Nono, last I heard of this show this was the exact plot premise that was going around:

W is a story about a surgeon (Han Hyojoo) who is searching for her missing father and gets kidnapped by a mysterious man (Lee Jongsuk?). They travel between reality and virtual reality. It’s described as a suspenseful love story melodrama.

At the time the synopsis, ‘a love story between a man and a woman in their 30s’ was all I knew too so I did expect THAT plot at all lol. Like the time travel aspect was entirely why I was so onboard with Jong Suk signing with them and it seemed right up the ally for the writer of Nine. Is this not correct then or has the story been revised?

0

I mean the writer even did Queen In-Hyuns man so I was really banking on it being about time travel. And what does it mean that Hanjoos dad "created" Jongsuk in a horror suspense comic book' ? Does he technically not even exist in the same reality as her ?

0

Yeah I knew what you meant, I think that's still part of the plot. We just don't know how it goes into motion since we're only getting fragments of the plot here and there.

"And what does it mean that Hanjoos dad “created” Jongsuk in a horror suspense comic book’ ? Does he technically not even exist in the same reality as her ?"

Presumably.

0

Thank you. The premise sounds something to the extent of Last Action with Arnold Schwarzenegger, except for instead of a kid and a huge buff dude it's this pretty pair.

I like HHJ and, and have recently discovered LJS dramas and really like him so far, so I'm looking forward to this.

But, yikes at this going up against KWB's drama, not because I think AF will be a sure shot hit, but because SidusHQ is going to wear themselves out with the media play trying to taint LJS' career, which they've already got a head start on it seems.

The fan wars will be exhausting.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

So THATS what that was! I was wondering how all of a sudden, randomly there was articles popping up about him apparently having 0% CF renewals. I mean as blatantly incorrect as that is, it's also just plain not possible. He's really big in China and Japan still, he's a hallyu star and he was doing his chicken CFs with Suzy up until a bit ago and a whole bunch of cosmetic lines.

But man, they're going to tear him to shreds for media play aren't they..

0
10
reply

Required fields are marked *

I mean, I don't follow LJS' CF career closely (because LOL why would I?) but from what I read from Korean portal sites, he recently left his company and is a free agent, so a lot of those deals are obviously going to be affected.

But I am a HUGE KWB fan, so I know how Sidus works and given their history that article was obviously trying to plant a seed.

Either way, it won't affect LJS that much, I'm just amused at Sidus trying to media play KWB and this drama as early as last year, when it's not even airing until July. They're trying hardcore to make him into the next KSH, unfortunately he's going to need to beef up his resume compared to KSH, LMH, and LJS.

Anyway, I have a pretty good feeling AF will be a hit, so it will make up for him not having a drama in 2 and half years.

0
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

As generic as the plot for AF is coming off sounding, I really do think it'll be a hit considering the lead pairing and that its Woo Bins first drama as a lead.

And too bad for LJS, he should really start promoting in Korea again he would be a lot more popular. I mean his airport scandal was nothing compared to Kim Soo Hyun's Mount Changbai scandal, and KSH is still South Koreas darling. But I think all the hate he got at that time really messed him up considering he never resigned his agency for how bad they handled the situation.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I mean he's only been on a hiatus for a year and some months by the time he comes back with W which is a lot shorter compared to other "top actors" lol. Also, you could argue that airport scandal didn't really affect him that much. He still landed Pinocchio which was a commercial and critical success. It's a lot more talk than actual consequences for his career. He's still popular, but there's a new "it boy/girl" every other day - look at the Reply and SJK hype.

I feel the opposite about AF, it will do well because of the plot hitting a nerve with viewers. KWB is more hype than substance at this point considering he's been basically given a trendy male actor title without even having proven he can carry a drama - all the other hallyu stars, lmh, ljs, ksh, have already done that already, and multiple times as well.

0

I don't know why Sidus is even trying it - as of now, Kim Woo-bin has three successful movies on the trot, which is more than any of the others you named barring Kim Soo-hyun.

And Chungmuro success tends to count for even more than tv success, he already has it, I don't get why LJS even needs to come into the equation. Just focus on promoting your own very successful star!

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, Chungmuro seems like it's the ultimate end goal for most actors, and once you made it there, there really is no need to come back to dramaland, unless you want to make sure you have public interest under lock with a super successful production.

As for his films, they were moderately successful, not super hits. Plus, most of his films had strong ensembles - Twenty and Technicians and Friend 2 - he wasn't the sole lead.

Basically, it's not like he pulled a WB in Ajusshi and had the entire country shilling out money to see a "kim woo bin" helmed film.

Plus, if he wants to add to that hallyu success from Heirs, dramas are were it's at internationally.

As a longtime fan, I've definitely seen Woo Bin's ifandom deplete somewhat because of lack of dramas. So I'm glad he's back this year.

0

oh, they're modest but definite successes, especially Twenty, which actually managed to cross the 3 million viewer mark. And from what I've seen, they were sold on Kim Woo-bin's name and did well, that goes a long way towards establishing him as a bankable movie leading man.

(I love the boy but let's be real, he's not at the level of a young Park Hae-il or Ha Jung-woo, he's a star more than an actor and needs the box office success to establish himself as one)

If he continues having successful movies, he won't really need dramas as much anymore. The only use he'd have for them is to keep booking endorsements abroad, especially China.

0

None of KWB movies were super hits and it was never his acting that received praised in any of those movies, not that he was bad, plus for Twenty he working with a strong cast of better actors like Kang Haneul. Globally he's not as big in China or Japan as LMH,KSH and LJS who have all had multiple hit dramas under their belt and have been leads with veteran actress whereas AF will be Woo Bins first time carrying an entire drama on his own.

0

That 0% cf contract renewal thing is not incorrect. It's true LJS has no new contract renewals in S. Korea. But yes it was really unfortunate if it's really KWB's agency that is behind releasing the news in media.

I really hope that wasn't the work of Sidus. LJS and KWB are great friends, and it would suck if they did all that. also, LJS is a unfortunately little "frail" when it comes to negative articles/reactions against him. hopefully, he won't be too bothered by that recent news, especially without a strong agency (at the moment) to back him up.

Well it's not like KWB has a say in how Sidus goes about their media play, and he's hardly big enough to be calling the shots this is after all his first show as a lead. Even Suzy has more authority on that call than him. I honestly feel bad for both LJS & KWB. They're always pitted against each other by their fandoms and now it's all this negative media play putting them down. Kind of a low shot to go for Jong Suk when he's not even signed to any agency, and he hasn't promoted in Korea for a while now. They didn't even have to go after him, all they had to do was promote Woo Bin & Suzy and they're show would have been a hit easily.

Required fields are marked *

Frail? I never really got that from him. He doesn't look stereotypically masculine, and seems like the introspective type, that's about it, imo.

I mean, he's not like a lot of other celebs that feel the need to go sue over "hateful" and "malicious" comments every time their feelings get hurt, or over random "dating" rumors which people would forget about within an hour or two.

But, that's none of my business.

perhaps wrong use of adjective. I use "frail" but really meant he's easily affected with bad press. that's based from interviews he's given. he'd be saying things with a smile, but one can easily feel his lack of self-confidence in his looks and acting abilities.

He is his greatest critic.

Just ignore it, it's not that dramatic. Jongsuk has been k-netizen and i-netizen's punching bag for a while now and it hasn't stopped him from having a successful career. At the end of the day, netizens don't matter as much as they think they do.

I mean, yes, none of this will affect him at all. As a general rule of thumb people shouldn't be taking the opinions of internet commentators seriously (even on sites like DB, perhaps especially on sites like DB), given that most of them 1. have no clue what they are talking about, and 2. are fans of one celeb while disliking another and have some strange, delusional agenda when leaving comments.

However, I do find it highly amusing that Sidus is THATTT shook over LJS' existence to be releasing stuff like this for years now LOL.

They need to go focus on the rest of their roster of actors/actresses who are either not getting work or flopping all over the place. I swear the only people they promote are KWB, KYJ, and Kim So Hyun at this point.

Sidus is really selling some of their talent short - Lee Yubi went almost a year between projects after Gu Family Book, and has yet to book her next acting job after SWWTN. And Jo Bo-ah's getting shunted to what look like very minor second lead roles after delivering well-received performances on cable and even leading a series.

I'm not keeping up with GMB but it's shocking how badly it's shot. The cast don't deserve this.

A PD like Jin Hyuk would have been perfect for a premise like this but I think he's already directing LJS' Chinese series, it's a shame because he handles fast-paced action and romance so well.

Yup, why worry about the plot, direction, or actual acting, as long as the 10-20 second kiss scene in this 20 hour drama is good enough. I guess that's all that matters.

Required fields are marked *

To be fair none of PSH's dramas involved very much plot, direction or actual acting(when it came to her) up until she did Pinocchio, and she got lucky with being offered that one. Apart from her chemistry with her leads and obviously the much awaited kiss in any romantic genre drama there wasn't much to anticipate considering she only did damsel in distress candy girl characters, so there's bound to be criticism when the female lead doesn't even meet the bare minimum required of her.

Required fields are marked *

The literal definition of "You obviously don't understand how much direction goes into kiss scenes!"

Plus, she basically played young, naive, inexperienced girls up until a few years ago (i'm excluding her films), so yeah she's not going to be puckered up like how DB likes it.

0

Okay, first of all, I wasn't referring to PSH specifically LOL. I was referring to the comment seemingly only looking forward to seeing how the LJS-HHJ kiss scene would be done in this drama, when there are a hell of a lot more important aspects such as plot, acting, and direction. Also, I don't appreciate actresses being broken down to how well they can deliver as the male leads love interest, because they are characters in their own right whose story should be important to the plot.

So, you jumped the gun with this comment.

Sidenote: PSH's best role wasn't even Pinocchio, that goes to FBND imo. Which most definitely involved acting, direction, and attention to the plot, which involved her playing someone with social anxiety and depression.

But, nice attempt at trying to defend comments like these LMAOOOOOOO.

0

Required fields are marked *

FBND being PSH's best performance is your personal opinion and not a matter of fact. To me it was just another extension of the kind of roles PHS has been playing until know except for this time the reason for the stilted acting is *social anxiety*. And you didn't get my point at all, I'm well aware that an actress isn't solely the romantic interest for the male lead (which thanks for pointing that out, real nifty of you) but when PHS seems to only ever play Candy Girl characters, than that's exactly the only thing her character is limited to: the love interest for the male lead.

But yeah you can go ahead calling it the directors call to play her scenes that way when she's worked for different writers and different directions with limited to little variation in her character portrayals. Her kissing honestly didn't even bother me until the rapey aspect of the Heirs kisses came into play, and that turned me off from LMH & PSH for good but people continue too amend that it was a *surprise* kiss, when literally every scene between the leads had a similar dynamic. Maybe she's turned that all around seeing how great she was in Pinocchio, but somehow I think that was just a one off.

0

so basically, any improvement PSH shows is going to be dismissed as a one-off and her kiss scenes are all her responsibility, not those of the PD or writer. Because actresses, especially ones as young as she was, have so much control over the way their scenes are shot.

The literal definition of refusing to give credit where it's due.

0

@ Bam

"FBND being PSH's best performance is your personal opinion and not a matter of fact."

Gee, that's probably why I literally wrote "imo" which is an abbreviation for "in my opinion" when I wrote that comment. Reading skills are important.

Also, you seem to miss my point as well. I wasn't claiming you were the one saying that female characters are reduced to just being the male's counterpart, I was trying to explain how the original commenter's comment came across, and why I responded in such a way.

Also, if you don't like PSH and LMH based off of one drama, that's great. Don't watch their dramas anymore, which based off of your knowledge of Pinocchio I'm assuming you still do.

Also, I'm not going to get into a debate about the state of roles available for actresses in their 20s and how the wide-eyed, fish kiss seems to be a staple in kdramas because god forbid the female lead character owns her sexuality because that would mean she's not the plain, vanilla character the audience has to relate to.

Yeah, so, excuse me if I, rightly so, believe it's a pretty common practice among scriptwriters and directors.

0

@dontrememberusername

Have you ever considered that there are other actresses that are better than PSH? And thus far more deserving of chances they never get. Kim Ji Won being one of them, she far outshone her in terms of acting in Heirs and yeah her kiss with with Kang Haneul had a lot more spark than any scene between the leads in that show, which given the context it wasn't suppose to be seeing as how the two characters were faking it. I'm only mentioning this because you keep pointing out that certain scenarios require specific reactions when it comes to PSH's performances, but there hasn't been a lot of disparity between those different situations.

Anyways yeah there are a lot better actresses who don't have the same fame as she does but I don't see how that has anything to do with PSH getting hate for her style of acting or why people criticizing her are supposedly "jealous" I gave you clear reasons why her character protrayals weren't my cup of tea and I gave her props where it counted, I don't see how that's me hating. Once again, I hardly think one great role is going to change her entire perspective on acting, for some actors that's all they have just that *one* good role and the rest are all mediocre.

0

.... as if she's the only Korean actress to have her kiss scenes look like a dead fish.

And last I checked, she had a lot more to do in Flower Boy Next Door than pucker up (which she did just fine at the end), but apparently facts go right out of the window in the face of a good old scapegoating.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Are you effing kidding me? I JUST gave her props for being great in Pinocchio but one role is hardly gonna change her entire perspective on acting seeing as how she's made a successful career out of playing her roles the way she has, Koreans certainly don't seem to have a problem with it given how scintillating they considered her scenes with LMH to be and her fans love her acting seeing as how they're the people who made shows like Heirs a hit.

You can owe it to her age or the director but actresses much younger than her have done much better when they were given a lot - Kim Sae Ron and Kim Yoo Jung being just two that come to mind at the moment. I hardly think THEY have any choice in their portrayal of characters they play, but still managed respectably.

I don't see why you're getting snappy at me I wasn't the one who wrote the original comment I didn't even say "the literal definition of.." Since you keep throwing that back into the argument. And i certainly don't remember asking for your permission on whether I should or shouldn't watch any of LMH or PSH's shows. Take you're fangirl rage and hash it out with the people you really have a problem with.

0

Here's the thing, I would take criticism of PSH's acting/kissing scenes a lot more seriously if people on here (and other sites) weren't so hypocritical, and so uneducated on how female leads are expected to be viewed by Korean audiences.

Like, where was everyone when SHG had that non-mouth movement, wide eyed wine kiss with SJK, but then had a full make out with him later on. Obviously the script called for different reactions. But, unless your name is PSH, people won't comment on those wide eyed kiss scenes.

Some of the criticism is valid, whereas some criticism is obviously given to her because people resent her popularity/success and feel that others more "deserving" should have the career she does.

0

Do you really think that just because someone defends PSH, or any actress from passive aggressive comments, that means I think she's the greatest thing to happen in dramas?

Yeah, no.

Also, whoever people think is more "deserving" is irrelevant to me, and further proves my point.

0

so she has to do is good at kissing to be good actress with all the role she had, you say?
And no she isn't lucky. She has worked her way up here since she was 13.

Kissing doesn't equal with acting.
And she has been fulfilled her role from TOH to Pinocchio, some role is bad like in Heirs but it doesn't her fault.

I mean, I agree with you, but actresses aren't really the problem. The system is. Drama demands that actresses act like they're chaste, virginal, passive recipients of male lust who have no understanding of or control over their own body. About the only thing an actress can do with these kinds of scenes is create the illusion of consent (or not), though admittedly some do this better than others. Until Korea starts to view women differently, most kisses are going to keep being bad.

I hope that being in Big Three would not affect her writing in negative way. I laughed i cried with the suspense, family, romance that she wrote. Please director-nim please be good!!
However, i always thought Nine would be the best for time travel-romance drama for me until Signal came. I would say Signal writer combine with the great director, Kim Won Seok was another level. But I would say Nine writer has this knack for touching sweet romance that make you feel so twisted and heart-wrenching so much so i would say she win in term of romance part.
