Happy Friday
Cruel Palace : It hurts, it hurts a lot.
I am on episode 32 and I don't think I'll continue watching, it against me personally,
it's fickle, well acted, well written but it's too evil to my mind that already embodied with NiF. Tbh, she doesn't has worthy opponent in the series.
Yes there's the crown princess and the queen but it feels like all the people in palace is bad people and she happen to be the smartest of all to ensure her own reign.
The good guy never knew anything and they can't outsmart her even with all people that come to their side, come on.
I do like the romance but I can't handle that type of separation, I don't want to see her fall deeper and embrace the devil hands, but she did; I can't stand it.
DoTS : I like it so far, nothing really make me feel out of place and I care about the character, I care about the nice people there, the sparkling romance jin gu and ji won preach my intuition. I was confused by SHK character for making the phone giving scene too much of a hassle but story wise, that's how SJK fall for her, give us backstory just by someone saying this and those, the 4some meeting and the story just gonna ends that short if she wasn't that much detailed person, at least she awe at his CCTV awesomeness. Onew is there too, cute as ever, I do hope he play bigger role but nah I feel good seeing him acted and have fun there.
I like that the story flow just with them, the problem arise because they meet and developed feeling , not backwards, like they had problem and somehow they attracted to each other after after spending time. They had encounter and they work on it.
Come Back Ahjussi : I must said that this is on fire, they establish too many background story and snippet of scenes in mystery. I really like the ahjusshi, both of them, I find their story is as much as interesting as body possession thing. I somehow want them to have clarity as themselves without Rain and Oh Yeon Soo character but I love Rain and Oh Yeon Soo character too. They all good at acting, this is a dilemma since I love all the actor and doesn't want any of them died or leave.
Then there's this lingering feeling on how they'll tied it all up cause their problem seems pretty heavy, not in just heart matter but kinda in justice system too, beside they can't stay in same body forever, will they?
I hope for no VS for this wednesday drama, they both has its charm,
Go Princess Go I finished it!! I feel like the ending doesn't mean anything but I love the cast and the character. Those abs protector should belong in comedy league.
I want to give a big hug to Park Hae Jin : I hope you're okay and continue to work hard

Maybe that is why I liked Queen Insoo more than Cruel Place (and it had happy ending). I was sad watching the fate of Crown princess and their sons, but best part was Kim Hyun-joo's superb acting.

And no worry about Park Hae Jin - he is already invited to a well-known Chinese variety show. I am kind of concerned if this backfires and Seo Kang-joon gets some hate.

Queen Insoo still doesn't has full subs but thanks for the happy ending guarantee ^^,
Kim hyun joo is really good there but I hate her character but I always want to try to knew some bases on her action but no, she kissed the devil.
but I familiar with the history background, I think the king injo story is also brought in Iljimae (both of them) and faith. It was bad time apparently.

I read the webtoon but still doesn't really watch the drama and I feel so sad that the Jung I hoped (since I believed PHJ can do that) doesn't appear, I read it since long time and I avoid comment on drama cause I knew it's two different thing. Will the chance to see it come ?
I don't think SKJ will gets more hate, people loves his character.

Cruel Palace lived up to it's title lol. It was also a cable sageuk. I loved it but I love Insoo more.

A great script can bring out the best in an actor. The unknown talents always shine in Jung Ha-Yeon's dramas. Jeon Hye-Bin was pretty awesome in In-soo. I watched some without subs because she was so good.

Yes, maybe actresses jump at the chance to portray real, complicated, morally ambiguous women instead of silly, one-note romantic leads. Jeon Hye-bin was bursting with potential before Insoo so I can only imagine how amazing her performance was in there (they're almost up to episode 38!!!), but he's taken far worse actresses like Park Si-yeon and turned them into legitimate talents (she was like a new woman in La Dolce Vita and has kept it up since then).

0

hmm, trying to figure out how Queen Insoo could have a happy ending just based on the history. I mean, the drama ends on Yeonsangun, right? Guess I'll have to watch and see lol.

It sees the end of Yeonsangun. I love the actor who played Yeonsangun. But ending scene is unexpected - even cute!

Ditto. hugs to PHJ.

Don't know how korean industry works but in my country no one speaks out against a powerful production house/ channel and manages to have a decent career afterwards....... Unless you are a mega star. Which i don't think PHJ is yet.

So best wishes for future projects sunbae!

Hi

Since we had a "Night in the museum event" on the eve of our independence day and the day before that also turned really long, I have been too tired to watch anything.

But I got my drawings scanned and now I can send them for printing! Yay! I am thinking of also making a color-yourself calendar. Haven´t had time to draw anything new, but i might start pictures of Viljandi. It´s cuter than Tallinn anyway

only watched short stints of dramas, not even full episodes. A bit of everything, but they won´t stick. the level of stickiness is not very high. Signal, although a grim police drama, could still flash a smile or two on a lighter moment. Six Flying Dragons seems to be heavily unbalanced regarding some characters. I liked the trust, faith and patience shown by both Moo Hyul and Bang-Won though. Yoo Ah In does not lose in the level of control he has over the whole scene.

Oh, the characters in Come Back, Ajusshi died on my birthday...I howled exitedly, seeing Choi Won-young. Is he a killer again? I ight watch just for him.

I really want to watch Youth Over Flowers: Africa, but it is not fully subbed anywhere.

semifinal of Eesti laul was last Saturday, some suprises . I reaaaally hope Jüri with Play wins, but Cartoon with Immortality seems to be forced upon us by so called "experts". I don `t like being told I am a "lame bi*ch" if I don`t vote for someone. To me, it is a boring song. Laura with Supersonic has really nonsense lyrics in very bad english. If a dark horse wins, like Meisterjaan with Parmupillihullus, well.... it is definitely weird... um I dunno. Could someone actually like it?

You can listen to the songs here if you´d like: http://etv.err.ee/v/7bb99076-84a8-468c-b758-a0c521bd1036

Happy Birthday! (if it is still valid)

Sorry you can't enjoy YOF: Africa. I am sure it will be available soon because I think there are tons of Ryo joon-ryol and Park Bo-gum fans working on it.

I don't know about k-celebs (their personality except through variety shows and dramas), so I don't know who to pick to go on the trip unprepared with. But I will pick whoever I can depend on - and we know Ryu or Yoo Yeon-suk is capable.

Happy Friday! Loving new W-R shows.
I don't know what to say about CITT. I was too optimistic like JB.
CITT with Yo-jung Sunbae is much more interesting. Enough of In-ho's piano scene. Now webtoon writer is complaining loudly.(but I am still enjoying the show)

Time to give some love to In-ha/Lee Sung-kyung. I like her overacting. LSK is a model turned actress, being good at playing piano, singing, dancing. She wanted to major in piano, but became a model when she was 17 (thanks to her parents). She said- she still plays piano 7-8 hours a day when she is at home (Seo Kang-joon/In-ho could have a piano lesson from her.
heh.) About SGJ, She mentioned they were like real siblings- having brown(light-color) eyes and all.

From her interview-
Q: Gossips are plenty for CITT. It is a very popular webtoon even having diehard fans called 'Chi-mother'(CITT + picky mother-in-law).
A:I am upset and can understand how they feel because I was one of them. But it is hard to squeeze hundreds of episodes in webtoon into 16 episodes. We are like "We know the situation but still feel disappointed" rather than being satisfied. Still I tried hard to find the compromising point between the original and new. At the end I am sure the show has its own color.

Q: In the center of gossips, there is Paek In-ha. In the original, she is an evil character who is victim of child abuse and has inferior complex toward her brother, but in the drama she is just portrayed as comical.
A: I was upset about that too. In-ha is a girl who tries to hang on pathetically and pretend to be strong to hide her trauma, but I worried if she was just portrayed as thoughtless and shameless (shopping crazy) girl. I was so frustrated because I have to give the feel "Craziest bitch in this district should be me", rather than being a simple thoughtless girl. In the later part however, her unique 'Cidar' behavior(relieving frustration) will show, and her pain would be revealed. Even though I hear "What an overacting" or "Does she think she is only one in the show?" now, later on people might think "Oh this is another side of Paek In-ha".

Q: What do you think about negative comments on your acting?
A: In-ha is an example. Her face expression is so wild that swollen portion disappears from my face after acting. Actually she was more exaggerated character, but I made her toned down. At the beginning, PD-nim wanted the character to wear blonde wig, and be whimsical at every turn who can't be controlled at all. Like a character you'd say "What's with her? Is she in the cartoon?" -who does not exist in this world. If I could hope, I'd like people understand that is the original In-ha character, rather than saying "Why does she do such overact? I feel upset the most when people say I didn't try my hardest. Under the situation I can't apply my intention 100%, I still found the compromise and tried my best, but I get criticized. I comfort myself saying...

hateful comments are also interests/concerns, but they still bother me since I am a human after all. I will try harder not to disappoint my fans.

Q: There was some article about your past interview when you said you didn't want to be a celebrity because you were afraid of people being interested in you. It was unexpected because you do instar gram/sns with fans, do modeling, acting, singing and even dancing all very well. You look like a born-celebrity.
A: There are times articles are exaggerated. I meant that I didn't imagine I would become a model or actress. I thought I would become a pianist since when I was young, and celebrity is for someone special. I was not particularly pretty, just a common girl who likes to have fun. Once you become famous, there are things tagging along like tax. You have to show good
side with tight self-control, you have to keep an eye on your private life, things like that, and I wondered if I can do all those things. I started modeling when I was senior in high school because my parents recommended. That time I thought, "What is this? Shouldn't I worry about college?", but lots of good things happened after that. I don't regret at all.

Q: I heard you've never had acting training. Kim PD of your debut drama "It is ok, it is love" said he wanted some raw feel not plastic modified image.
A: After that drama, I asked seniors if I should take acting lessons. But they said no. "Not because you are doing good, but for now it is the time you take out what you already have." Actually I was more worried about experience than technique.
Skill can be earned through training, but feeling can't. Wouldn't you do a better job when you shoot a romance scene if you have an experience? Wouldn't the expression be more truthful if it reflects your actual pain? Then again I think the way you look at your partner as the character in the drama is more important than reflecting just experiences.

Q: Are you going to continue modeling?
I wanted to do both-modeling and acting in the beginning. But it was harder than I thought. Seniors said "Things will not go the way you want. It will be more than just getting exhausted. You have to go through with it to find out." And that was true. There was time I couldn't make the (fashion) show that I promised because drama filming did not finish in time. But rather than stop doing modeling, I just have to work dividing time wisely.

Rest of interview were about her singing and dancing talents (including her performance on the opening stage during 2015 MBC
acting awards ceremony).

So blame the Lee PD for her overacting (She is already blamed for Yoo-jung issue)? - well now we know it could have been worse.

She was in the show TAXI (ep 410), King of Mask Singer(ep 19-20) which you can watch in Dramacool.
Also was in Happy together (ep 380).

Thank you so much. :) I wish they hadn't directed her to be so comical in her acting in the beginning. It seems weird to me that the director let a lot of actors interpret their roles (based on their interviews) but insisted she play Inha a certain way, a way which seems to have felt strange to the actress playing her as well. It's terrible that she got flak for this.
I'm beginning to wonder if someone concerned in the making of CITT is disturbed by certain types of behaviors and circumvents their portrayal. Which is...disturbing.

Anyhow, I think this actress is very pretty and I'm glad I could see that she actually did have acting chops in her later scenes.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear that...

Since the starting of the drama, I have been seeing..if OTT is not what Director wanted..they would have stopped her from portraying it that way..

And frankly comical on one's own..for e.g. since she doesn't have much experience and the way she plays In Ha..could no way be without specific guidance and demand of PD..

Oh this PD and TVN needs to go down and learn their lesson

Hi Everyone!

Its been quite some time since i have been on a drama roll!

1. Dots: I love it! the leads, the cinematography and the maturity of the show! storyline seems pretty bleh so far though, hope it will pick up when the war starts, more conflicts, morals issues, etc

2. Please come back Mister: Episode 1 didnt really hit it for me, but episode 2 nailed the bud. Rain was hilarious!

3. CITT: A lot of controversy over the lead's screentime. while i have no complaints over Inho's increased screentime, i would prefer it for the show to stay closer to the webtoon, because the lack of explanation over Jung's story is just going to only make Inho appear as the dark knight and mr right for Seol!

All this CITT controversy and my own complains about how the drama plot goes, i finally decided to read the webtoon (self-aplause lol). Finished the whole naver one in two days (staying up all night and nearly late for work bzzz) and i can only give one word: WOW.

Reading webtoon after seeing thru drama is fun bcs it gives more perspective. It really feels like completing a puzzle. I love the slice-of-life and slow pace in the webtoon while seeing how the story come to life thru CITT actors is seriously fascinating. For the sake of the story, i really wish they didn't screw this up. Only 2 eps left!!! Although the preview really gives the makjang feels. Please be good, cheese. I love all characters (and good actors who did incredibly good job) too much so i won't give this up. Finger crossed so hard right now.

All this cheese news makes me remember why i used to wait until the drama finishes before starting to watch. Who knows what you will get at the end :( Which makes me convinced that i won't watch any of current airing drama ahaha. How's that for conclusion :p

So many new dramas to watch tho. Have a great time watching beanies!!! And have a great weekend you all ??

About Cheese

Last Wednesday morning, I became rather upset. I tried to stay civil in a certain commenting section on DB, but I might have partially failed in that attempt. I'd like to apologise to everyone who I might have offended (Miranda, TJ, ...).

Sometimes you and a show you watch simply do not match. And then you part ways relatively amicably (There might be some name-calling though. Like, me and 'Mask': "Well, you are trashy!" -- "I am, sue me!"). That's okay, no harm done, move on.

But when you are getting along very well with a show, and suddenly the show decides to spit in your face, and continues to do so, that kind of hurts. Especially when there is simply no conceivable reason for it. At all. It's not the lack of competence or skill in any aspect of the production, it's not any kind of misguided expectations either. It's just sheer, willfull disrespect for the audience. I don't even care what kind of politics went on behind the scenes that might have made the show-runners more inclined to spit in my face. I'm not your bitch.

I don't care whether you break with tradition, you get fancy with an adaption, you happen to disrespect the original writer, you overstress your staff, you reshoot scenes differently because of a new and different concept. I don't care about screen-time ratios. I don't care about ships. If you deliver, I'll accept all of that and more. It's your production and maybe the end justifies the means. But, the end of the show is the audience. There is absolutely no justifiable reason to fuck with the audience.

I don't know how or why this happened, and I don't want to know. In the end, tvN is responsible for the show it releases to the viewers.

this is quite sad considering that tvn used to be the most reliable channel for quality productions ( with the exception of a few misses here and there, of course) but they brought it on themselves. Even if they did have a sudden change of mind in the direction of the storyline, the way they handled it was really bad. Like you said, it is so disrespectful to the people involved, especially the audience.

The last 4 episodes I was actually watching the preview only, and then read the recap, locate the scene that I wanted to watch (with Seol and Jung and Bora + Eun Taek) or some necessary screen from DB recaps, then head on to that screen. After few days when I have a good mood, and my essays are handed in to school, then I brave myself to watch the episode. But for the last 2 episodes I did not bothered. I never watch the full eps. of ep. 13 and 14. I do not need to have PSA scene on how to throw your trash. I think ep. 14 was the quickie. I watched for about 9 mins only. I do not have the patience or the mood to watch my beloved drama trashed to a piano drama. I probably do the same with ep. 15, watch the preview of ep 16 and then wait for JB's recap. I hope to see you again on the recap so we can discuss it again, Petra. I love the discussion with you guys.

I've recently started watching How I Met Your Mother in addition to my dramas as I only saw an episode or two while it was airing and it always intrigued me, I mean come on a sitcom with an actual story and character progression that doesn't get reset at the end of every episode who would have thought that could happen. Frankly I love it so far although thanks to the internet I did spoil the ending for myself, I'm wondering why the ending was disappointing to people as it seems pretty clear to me that the story is about Robin from the beginning plus who wouldn't want Robin and Ted to get back together once they're older and wiser and want more of the same things.

Neighborhood Hero- Halfway through and I'm more confused than ever as to why I like it given that I'm now almost positive that there is no plot. If there is the writer or writers have no clue about where the plot is heading and or pacing, at this rate everything that happens in the show will happen in the last 10 seconds.

Moorim School- I'm one of the few that has stuck with it and one of the even smaller number that still loves it.

I liked the first week of Come Back, Ajusshi, especially episode 2 once Rain and Oh Yeon-seo enter the picture.

yeah the story is about Robin, Ted, Barney and out lovey dovey Lily + Marshal and the mom is kinda out there but it just the way it done can't feel right.
well Robin and Ted getting together again is good possibility but Idk how to said it without spoiling it but it was underwhelmed for me too, esp about Barney

I'm with you there on Neighborhood Hero. Silly me, I had wanted it to be only about neighborhood stuff. But noooooooooo ...Show had to go for international intrigue with some bank and spies, counter spies, betraying spies, spies spying on spies. I watched the last episodes but I'm still pretty meh about it. If my crush Lee Soo Hyuk wasn't in it, I might not watch it.

Regarding HIMYM, it just has to do with how the mother comes in during the last season. She really sparks well with Ted, so it sort of feels like the rug is pulled out from you with the ending and with all the buildup over Barney and Robin only for it to come to nothing, yeah the end is disappointing. Long-term, it's easy to see that it was always going to be about Robin, especially considering the first episode, but that didn't make it any less frustrating.

Also, it's a bit trite that sort of storyline - like everyone in the middle is just filler so Robin and Ted can get their act together.

And it felt sad that Robin and Barney's relationship ended so quickly - that they didn't actually try hard to make it work after marriage, and Barney just regressed back to being how he used to be.

Neighborhood Hero - I want to drop it too but I can't because of Lee Soo-Hyuk. He mesmerizes me with his acting especially in NH, Scholar Who Walks the Night, Valid Love, and High School King of Savvy. Knock on wood that he'll keep on getting better and better with each new character/role he undertakes.

HIMYM-you will hate it, trust me. I was like you on first 3 seasons (I knew about spoiler), but now I am on a 6th season and I'm officially ignoring this ending, it is just that all growth of characters/story line is for nothing. This ending was perfect/heartwarming after season or two, but now it feels like a lazy writing, where screenwriter just HAD to put it here solely by reason that it was planned at the start.

Required fields are marked *

Regarding HIMYM, I felt the same way when I started watching but then season 4 started. The series finale ruined all the character development Barney went through in 9 seasons in less than 15 minutes. It also felt as if Ted hadn't move on from Robin. The finale would have made sense if the series ended earlier like probably season 4 or if the wedding wasn't one season long but so much had happen to Robin, to Barney, to Ted. The finale felt like a betrayal. I was honestly okay with what happened to the mother but Ted and Robin again for finale, nope. It felt like Ted never moved on from Robin.

pls come back mister - i am stragely devoid of any thoughts about it. i'm not really sure what to feel about it. Let me see episode 2.

MA - is a complete mess. I discounted the absolute dodgy psychology (why? why ? why ?) but i still can't figure out when exactly did the leads fell in love considering theey both said "i love you' (which is a huge deal) rather than 'i like you'. The rom-com strangely skipped over the Rom part

CITT - pls finish soon so we can stop getting mad and crashing the DB server

Lol at last sentence. I felt bad I posted so much after I found out about all of their server problems. Oops.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Come Back, Ajusshi. I think I felt a lot for the middle management guy because my husband is mid-lvl though in a different field. Of course, hubs is extremely strategic and uh...passive aggressive but I felt for both the Ajusshis right away. I think it'll be a fun romp and I hope it won't bog down.

DOTS: I'm still laughing at all the wrong parts but hey, I'm having fun. :) Idk how long I'll last though. I forgot how much Alpha males annoyed me, haha. Even if they look like all that. The story so far, seems okay.

Hi everyone, I think it’s my first post on Open thread, so some random thoughts about my week in Korean entertaining world :
- Cheese in the trap (aka CITT) : ep 13 & 14 : too much In Ho for me (personal opinion), Jung x Seol moments loved it
- CITT behind the scenes : ugly, shady, just wth is that !!!
- Descendants of then Sun ep 1-2 : seemed too perfect, dating a little too fast, too much music , but I’m not blind : SJK is gorgeous, I knew about the abs scene while training but episode 2 with all soldiers shirtless wasn’t too bad for my sight
But after all the CITT behind the scenes stories and screen time not equal or which don’t serve the true story development : I will watch DOTS, and just drink all the romance there will be, just like I did with Secret Garden even if sometimes it was overload
- Come back Ahjussi : 1st ep was so-so (and guy seriously, you did not commit suicide LOL look at the situation !) , but the 2nd ep made me laugh so I will give it a try, but don’t turn out like OMHE
- so came One More Happy Ending ep 11 & 12 : I started it because I thought maybe I will have some cohabitation or nonsense comical situation, but they skipped the “com” and try to do something deeper, but I appreciated it though, the story of Da Joung being more interesting. And hey, with new haircut I thought I was watching Falling for Innocence, hahahaha
- marathon of Twenty Again during last weekend : it was a pleasure to see again Sir Dimples from Goddess of Fire :) , also the story was good and nice , easy watching
- Variety shows : Running man : was good (much more than the detective special), 1N2D (better than RM) and Infinity Challenge (funny and touching !)

For next week : CITT the end, I don’t know what they will give us :/ , fearing the worst,
DOTS : SJK I’m coming, I need a shoulder to cry upon, CITT cheated on everyone T_T

"It was a pleasure to see again Sir Dimples from Goddess of Fire"

Does this mean that you have not met Sir Sexy Brain from Liar Game? :) I wish I could get a fit of selective kdrama amnesia so I could rewatch it from scratch...

About CITT, I stopped around episode 8 for simple real-life reasons, but now I am wondering whether I should quit while the show was still good and treasure the memories....

I watched long time ago the japanese versions of Liar Game, I knew that there has been a korean adaptation of it, and from reviews and feedbacks seen here and there , I know the korean version was appreciated, but I still haven't watch it yet (shame on me, but I have too many well-known dramas to catch up/watch : Reply series, Misaeng, Master's sun, I remember you but I spoiled myself reading year end review on DB :/, ...).
Also at that time I was watching the korean tv show The genius which is quite similar to Liar Game vibes
Guess thank to you Liar Game will go up on "to watch" list ;)

Concerning CITT : I will watch the 2 last eps, but tired of direction of ep 13 & 14, and also the behind the scenes story :/ , it's a pity, it was a great drama until first half part

Ah, if you have seen the Japanese version that may be different; I am actually thinking that's what I should do next :-) . But then, at the very least you have Lee Sang-Yoon's dimples playing the lead :-p . Anyway, I thought it was just refreshing to watch a show that was brisk and suspenseful, but where the stakes were mostly just money; all the excitement and the addiction without the angst :-)

I don't dare to watch Misaeng, to be honest; I am working through Reply '88 (after spoiling myself), when I have the time and energy for a 90-minute episode, and may get around to watching '97 at some stage.

About I Remember You, even if you have spoiled yourself, it is not like the Big Spoil was such a shocker; it was pretty clear almost from the beginning, so I would go ahead anyway; plenty to enjoy in the development. :-)

Signal continue to be awesome and tugging at heartstring. I didn't expect to get a case where SH was emotionally invested in it. And boy, what a creepy and super awesome scene those were. Can't wait for next case, seems like it's HY's time to deal with his emotional burden.

After reading recent post about CITT, I know now why this week eps felt rather off. (And I thought I was just being weird). It's such a pity that the story gone off the rail after that perfect first half. I hope they still can manage a satisfying wrap up for the last 2 eps.

OMHE still doing good and I still enjoy it a lot. The 'let's go to states since live in Korea is too hard' trope wasn't too bad since SH's reason was quite valid. And I also love the other friends story, especially Dajeong. Though, music director-nim, don't you think you overplay Kyuhyun's song lately? We know that THAT's the moment.

You might be tired, but one more interview with Na PD and YOF Africa-
Q: First episode had the highest raings among all flower series.
A: I feel good, but I am not doing everything in the show. I work with junior PDs. Even if I involve in planing and filming, they do a lot. That was the reason I could do the 'Sinsuyoogi/trip to the west 2'.

Q: Do you get the help from tourism departments of the country, since the YOF destination can be Daebak with travelers?
A: I don't feel good if I receive help. Also If I receive help, I have to go there. There is possiblity of having unexpected situations, which might prevent us from going to the place we are supposed to go. So far Taiwan and Dubai were the only places we took their offer.

Q: It looks that there was unexpected situation already in this trip, like trying to rent a car from 'One lady' and failed. It would be difficult to cover all situations when you research the place through a trip beforehand.
A: It is not hard. There is a knowhow. For example, imagine if a foreigner comes to Korea. Once they arrive in the airport, they decide to go somewhere, but they make decisions by checking a guidebook for limited time(like 10 days), so route is kind of easily determined. When we do the trial trip, we can see how casts will move. We just don't know the order of places they might take, so we check 120% of expected trip routes. Still there is no need to check every single place in the country.

For 'One Lady' situation, it was unexpected. We were sure they will rent a car in the airport. In the trial trip, we only checked the rental places. But the place they went was not official rental car company. It was like a private rental place where taxi driver recommended. They wanted to go to downtown, and we had to follow them. I usually don't stop the casts. But we have people who are familiar with local area with us. We ask them if it is dangerous. If they say they don't think it is dangeous, we just let them decide. In the case of 'One Lady', production team follow them without any knowledge. We just let them as long as we decide there is no danger like being robbed with guns.

Q: How production team feel with such situations?
A: Get nervous. I worry and hope nothing bad happens, and worry how it will look when it airs. But once you start to control that kind of situation, you can't do anything. The casts don't want to do anything once you stop them. And about after 3 days they ask, "How do we do this?". The charm of a Reality show is when casts get over the hardship with their free will. If it is safe, I don't stop them.

"Sometimes frustrated (with their decisions). If they rented when they arrived in the airport, they would have been able to do some downtown sightseeing at least. Once casts make mistakes, they freeze. Wonder if they did something wrong. But you can record the changes in their dealing with situations gradually. So I leave them alone if possible."

Q: Park Bo-geum missed his flight. There must have been staffs but still let him to decide what to do even if he misses the flight?
A: Usually people stand in line and boarding takes 15-20 minutes. Staff thought that too, but they ended boarding time too early that time. That time Staff might thought "Park Bo-geum is eating, and leaving in hurry could give us funny scenes." This is only possible because there are many flights available. If this was trip between continents, they would've interrupted him eating. In this case since we were in Africa already, it was possible to recover the lost time.

Q:One of the topics is always about why Dong-ryong Lee Dong-whi is not in the trip.
A:We decided casting after watching R88 1 and 2nd episodes. In those episodes. Ryu Joon-yeol and Go Kyung-pyo standed out. I thought two were the main leads. And Park Bo-geum was such a good-looking and I wanted him badly. Jung-bong Ahn Jae-hong was so cute. I decided, but as the drama goes on, other characters that I thought were side characters became important- Not only Lee Dong-hwi, but Noeul Choi Sung-won also. But the most important thing in YOF is securing schedule early and secretcy.
We have to start working 2-3 months early because if you ask a cast a possport out of blue, he will ask 'why'. So to make a believable excuse, you have to work beforehand not to give any hint out, and everthing has to fit. That was the only reason we couldn't include them. Also YOF has limits in the number of casts. It started with 3 people. I feel sorry we couldn't take Dong-whi, but if he joined, we would've had to take out someone else.

Q: YOF Africa was hot issue from the first episode, but Iceland trip was never an issue.
A: I had no idea I'd get such questions. I just love love them (Joongwoo, Jo jung-suk, Gang Sang-hwon, Gang ha-neul). I thought Iceland episodes were unique, but feel disappointed (thinking 'Oh this didn't have such an impact?'). I wanted to give viewers small fun, but seemed like it didn't meet the level of a variety show fun. Whenever I hear Iceland episodes were lacking, I feel disappointed and bothered. But what can I do.

Q: Would it have done better if the trip was made in Summer?
A: The concept of YOF is to make viewers think "Oh maybe I can go there too". We could go to Northern Europe like Iceland in the summer. Money? there is a lot since it is from station. I could show the viewers the best picture with help. But it costs a lot for regular folks to take a comfortable trip during summer. We thought it- A country like Iceland can be visited inexpensively because it is off season. I wanted to show the viewers they can have such a trip with less money because they are young. Especially for young people can not afford much, I wanted to show them a trip they can afford. If (not so young people like) Us do what YOF did and costed about $7500, that would be cheating.

In regards to Cheese, since we have not been talking about it that much. I'm trying to understand the whole thing, even though this might come as rude. Why does it matter for us viewers that they change the stories in CITT halfway through? I mean, kdrama industry has been doing that for so long, so why is this a much bigger issue now? The production can change the story the way they want to, and to their liking. It will be terrible, I”m sure. And I will end up grading the drama lower than what it would have been when the drama started. But it’s not something I will be so thoroughly upset and mad about that I need to make this a bigger issue than it should have been. Now that it became a bigger issue, then definitely the ending will get change again to satisfy the other netizens who still hasn’t been disappointed.

Now, if I were Park Hae Jin or Soonkie, the writer, I will be frustrated too. And they have the right to do so. Since they worked hard for it. However, we the viewers don’t have the right to make a big deal out of the drama. It’s a drama. There will be new dramas after this. We don’t need to blame SKJ for it either. We will probably be mad to the director, and might not watch her dramas going forward. But she could not possibly care if I watch or not, she will be paid no matter what.

So people, watch the ending. Don’t watch the ending. Either way, no one will be crying if you do or you don’t.

You are absolutely right. The show-runners can do whatever they want. Nobody can force them to stick to the same concept, story, genre, characters, style, etc. throughout a show.

As a member of the audience, all we can do is take it, or walk away. There's nothing else we can do about it.

But: I don't know about you, but when I watch a show, I get invested. In the cinematography, in the style of story-telling, in the dramatic composition, in the characters. That's why I commit to a show and continue watching. No show is without flaws, but a certain degree of consistency and continuity is so universally required for any narrative (and especially in the K-drama subgenres) that you break the contract with your audience if you don't care about that.

To me, this utter disrespect by the show-runners and by tvN to me doesn't only mean that I have to stop watching "Cheese", it means that I'm suddenly no longer willing to commit to any of their shows anymore. Because ... why bother?

Thank you John G. I'm glad you responded. I actually wanted to know your response, since you seem to be level headed when making comments. And I like that.

I do get invested with my dramas as well. I stick with them till the end if the drama still moves me and hitting me in the right spot visually or emotionally. But I'm also the person that can easily drop a drama 8th or 12th episodes in if it's not doing anything for me anymore. Why suffer to the rest of it when I can find another. And maybe that's partly why I don't understand viewers who dislike the trajectory of the drama when I assume they could easily move on to another.

I never thought that show-runners can "disrespect" us every time they decide to change course. I just think of it as, "Well, that's how it is. Let's go move on." But I can keep that word in mind. In a sense they are disrespecting us viewers when the showrunners did not realize about the implications of not communicating with the webtoon writer to begin with. So, now that they don't have a choice, the only thing they can do is make the viewers miserable since we can't sue them.

Thanks for that.

If the "disrespect" factor was a real issue none of us would watch Hollywood productions ever again because, let's face it, whoever had a single experience with an American show that got cancelled or went downhill plot-wise can survive through the odd reality called "K-ent". I've watched promising films that ended up being total garbage and mediocre projects that turned out to be real gems. That's a fact and it's being happening all over the world, whether it's Europe, Las Americas or Asia. Entertainment should entertain otherwise we should move on. Well, that, of course, applies to viewers and not "investors" (the word sounds more appropriate when money is involved but that's my PoV). So, did I "invest" in Sicario to be an Oscar nominee for the Best Picture Award (or at least Benicio for the Supporting Actor Award as it happened in BAFTA)? YES! Should my favorite director be acknowledged for his fantastic work? ( Dennis Villeneuve, I adore you with all my heart and all my soul. I wish you could make a film with all my favorite actors out there!) The answer is yes! Will I not watch the Oscars because of that (or because of #OscarSoWhite and the keybord-fights we had the past two months with all the far right Americans on every single blog -I swear, they are as annoying, uneducated and dangerous as the European Neonazis!)? I'll certainly watch no matter what! Happy Oscar Night!!!

But I’m also the person that can easily drop a drama 8th or 12th episodes in if it’s not doing anything for me anymore. Why suffer to the rest of it when I can find another.

Well, of course I also watch some shows that I drop relatively late (not very often, but it happens). In these instances, I'm usually very well aware of certain rather fundamental flaws of a show, but I still am able to watch them "hesitantly". I'm not fully committed and prepared to drop them any time anyway.

I never thought that show-runners can “disrespect” us every time they decide to change course. I just think of it as, “Well, that’s how it is. Let’s go move on."

Well, of course, I'm a stickler when it comes to consistency of any dimension (character, story, genre, style, themes, ...). And I have to say, almost all show-runners do value consistency very, very highly. They respect the kind of contract they make with their audiences when they introduce a show. Not necessarily out of artistic integrity, but also because the audience will "move on" otherwise and it's very difficult to replace it with a different audience once the show is already running for a while.

Now, "changing course" comes in different flavours. Long runners often shift through different temporary lead characters and focussed character relationships, for example. Comedies become darker and more earnest during the 2nd act. If you don't like it, you can walk away, but you cannot actually blame the show for it.

Sometimes the writer(PD, ...) simply decides that he/she doesn't like the original concept/genre/whathaveyou of the show anymore and replaces it with something completely different without any prior warning. That's when I get offended. Sometimes it happens in a combination of inevitable events and incompetency ("Secret Hotel"), and hopefully very early during the show ("OMHE").

But "Cheese" is worse than anything.

So, now that they don’t have a choice, the only thing they can do is make the viewers miserable since we can’t sue them.

Worse. They did prove that they are fully competent to produce a great show, in every single aspect of it (they still produce a lot of very excellent scenes at this point). It would have been entirely possible for them to change the plot line and reshoot some material, complying to the demands of the original writer.

They have a choice, and they decided: Fuck the audience. Fuck the audience and rub it in their faces while we are at it.

And that's definitely disrespectful.

And maybe that’s partly why I don’t understand viewers who dislike the trajectory of the drama when I assume they could easily move on to another.

For me, it's not easy to simple switch to another show. Like right now, there are simply no shows at all that are even watchable.

"Signal" is on hold after I got annoyed...

Why does it matter for us viewers that they change the stories in CITT halfway through?

I think it because it's an adaptation, part of viewer already knew the depth of the story and the character, their reasoning, their backstory, so at least the drama should understand the actual sentiment of what happen on the original work.
The changes character view also hard to accept when people knew it wasn't like that since the earlier episode pretty much like the webtoon intended to.
If they said they only use the premise and work different way then I think no one will complaint much since the drama watcher will take it as the drama presented it

0

Required fields are marked *

I tend to get pretty annoyed with drama companies changing an original work around. Because we writers spend years working on a story. We have our themes, our heartfelt desire to speak on a particular issue. I remember how annoyed I was when the movie folks changed "My sister's keeper." (I think that was the title.) Heck, I get annoyed when they change a fat character to a skinny character (Frankie and Johnny) or a minority character into a white character (Airbending) or a sad situation to a fake-happy one (Mary Poppins.)

To me, the world is not easily enlightened and even when you write a story to change the world's way of thinking, filmmakers will bend your story to satisfy majority expectations.

So I guess I would get all bent out of shape if I were more into this show. Right now I'm kinda just watching it.

All that said, kdramas have been known to p*ss viewers off when they make stupid choices when it coms to their endings. This is one of the reasons I avoid J-dramas because they just annoy me with their endings. I still haven't forgiven Ooh la la couple for its stupid illogical ending. But at least the Jdramas stick with their plans and their storyline. All this live-shooting isn't good if one wants to remain true to the spirit of a story and not be influenced by viewer desires or by the dictates of the dramatic "norm."

I think viewers have the right to see a writer's original vision, esp if that particular vision has been beloved by a certain viewership. Paradoxically, sadly, the original vision will be subsumed to the drama's vision. The way folks remember Disney's happy Mary Poppins film instead of the more somber book, or a white airbender instead of a cartoon which shows that Asians can save the world, or a skinny depressed Frankie instead of a play where fat-hatred is challenged. Viewers remember the false and forget the original vision because celluloid is carved in stone.

So whatever the ending of CITT, even if I hate the ending, there is a loss to the general viewership because the original writer's vision was not only lost but turned on its head...forever.

Thanks Carole.

I can tell you I'm not a writer. Heck, you might even see many grammatical errors in my post. So, I cannot truly understand the feeling of having a story I created be flipped backwards, forwards, insde and out.

However,I like to believe that the webtoon author of CITT made a contract with tvN and its' production team. I would have assumed that the contract agreement specified in detail what the author wants and does not want to happen.

Do you think there was no such thing that happened with this author? Did the author basically just give tvN the rights to do anything? Is it even possible to create a clause in contract where certain themes, characters remain the same as the webtoon? I guess my question is: how are contracts between writers and tv network supposed to be?

I do want to see the writer's original vision as well. I want to see what made Jung like that. Heck, I even wanted to see more of the gay couple. It is a shame that we will not get to see it in the drama.

It's a pet peeve of mine when adaptations do not take the difference of medium into account. Therefore, I'm very open to adaptations and interpretations as long as they keep the original theme and premise. They could have done many, many things to CITT and I'd have been fine with it.

I do not think this situation is about the ending. It's not a silly shipper's war as some would like to have it categorized and dismissed. Personally, I was horrified when I realized that we were not seeing inside Jung.

Fictional characters can help us to broaden our minds and explore aspects of ourselves and others; aspects which may disturb us but is still rooted in the reality of our existence. I was excited and intrigued by a well-crafted character who was both simple and complex and..."different" than the usual Alpha male. I was looking forward to peeling back the layers and getting to know what made him the way he is. Not to excuse him but to understand him.

And we were off to such a good start. Then, someone took the promise away.
In addition, they did it in such a degrading manner. As if fluff (rosy cheeks and wince, pianos) could distract us from the more difficult issue of damage and hurt and how to deal with flawed human beings, including ourselves. I hate that.

Why did they do that? Was he too scary? It caused a lot of problems with the way the audience at large was interpreting his character and EVEN HIS HUMANITY. I spent every week trying to show the other side of the coin. That someone can be "bad" but still human. Still vulnerable and able to be loved...whether he deserved it or not. Is that not empathy and grace? Furthermore, to do that with strength and proper boundaries.

I honestly do not know how I became a staunch advocate for a character I started off by saying needed no defense. Lol. Perhaps it was over-identification but I think it was mostly excitement.

I think every creator and audience enter into a relationship, however tenuous and brief. Both of us can walk away at anytime. They may not care that I'm walking away but I do it for myself. I don't like being treated as if I didn't notice what they did there, as if I will lap up whatever they serve. My choice.

CITT - well, I dropped this silly drama in episode 11. i think they had SKJ reshoot Jung scenes to justify in Ho ending up with Seol because that's definitely what's going to happen.

DOTS - I started watching this show because despite popular opinion, I was one of the people who absolutely loveeeeedd heirs. I've honestly loved every show she's written. I loved heirs, gentleman dignity, secret garden.
I loved it. Sometimes I don't need deep, I signed on for deep and different in cheese and look where that got us. I'm enjoying it. Seriously, the men in these show are too fine. I love it!!!

One more happy ending - episode 11 was so filled with angst. I'm so glad episode 12 is bringing back the funny and I think from now on its going to be great.

I really don't know if I want to see come back adjussi, I'm still on the fence.

Oh well, have a nice day people!

Hello, all:

I think i'm getting tired of winter. I just want it over and done with already. Other than that, I'm still wading through the contest entries and trying to judge them. Some are very good, some are very bad, some are in the wrong genre category entirely. It's so hard to pick the top five stories when there are seven outstanding perfect ones.

Dramas:

Descendants -- Bring it on, charming sexy alpha male rescue worker. It's okay and I think I could enjoy this if I allow myself to be swept away by the testosteroneyness of it all. Feels like an old-fashioned war movie, a weepy from the forties.

Come back mister - I feel as if I've seen it before. It's okay until something better comes along. It's good seeing the actor from What's with this family. I'm not shipping any living women with any dead guy. Their lives are over; they have to do what they have to do (whatever that is) and move on to the choir invisible and the heavenly realm. So I won't be caring much about these dead-now-temporarily-living lovelorn folks.

Cheese in the trap -- Dang I hate intrusive entitled aimless clothes horses who have nothing better to do than to bother other people's lives.

Six Flying Dragon - is it stupid of me to want a lovelife and wife for MooHyul? Is it also stupid of me that I'm unhappy about Boonyi slowly turning into the Lady of Banchon and forsaking her love?

Signal - I seriously hate sneaky backstabbing authority figures who are out to undermine everything righteous for his selfish murderous reasons. Yes, that's you Captain Cover-up. Yep, I'm speaking to you.

Glamorous Temptation -- I dived in for a coupla episodes around epi 39, then I dropped back out when Prime Minister inexplicably got out of jail. What's happening now?

Trying to find a good weekend drama. I watched the first epi of Five Children and just couldn't deal with the whole "she kept the adultery a secret for 3 years" thing. I want the family formed already. Soo will see. There's a weekender on SBS I might watch. Will see.

Not much else other than that. Happy weekend, all.

intrusive entitled aimless clothes horses who have nothing better to do than to bother other people’s lives.

That's one way to read her, Carole. But that's ignoring the fact that she is a survivor of childhood abuse who's already been left once by her only surviving family member, and that her behaviour may well be the result of some serious abandonment issues (her refusal to get a job has actually started to read like her not getting it because, in a twisted way, Jung's dad making her become self-reliant would deprive her of the shelter of the family) and feeling threatened that she's about to be supplanted in the lives of the two people closest to her.

I'm not saying she's right or justified, just that this is what her POV may be.

I'm not sure about that. First because I'm a survivor of child abuse and so are many people and we really aren't like that. We really aren't. Secondly, I'm not sure if she was a survivor or child abuse. Unless I missed something.

She wants control over her life -- and those people in her life who can provide for her. She wants power because she feels powerless (perhaps because her parents died.) As a kid we were shown that she had parents who died and then she lived with a tough aunt...but having a tough aunt does not an abused person make. Even as a kid she had a manipulative streak and hero's dad even comments on it in the last episode. She simply does not want to listen to anyone who challenges her power over herself. Most kids hate being under the power of someone else. That doesn't mean they're abused.

Acquisitiveness is somewhat understandable if she lost stuff but treating those who love her as if they owe her is entitlement...and evidence that she has always gotten her selfish way. I'm thinking she represents the old proverb about if you treat stranger too well, they start thinking they are entitled. Or that one should train a child well. She seems to be a person who is meant to be a warning sign to anyone who wants to help an orphan. (Which is a whole nother story.)

I think the story as we see it isn't even hinting at abuse as Baek In Ha's problem. There is pity for her, yes. But not because of any supposed child abuse. Even as a kid she wanted power.

I think her problem comes from having lost her purpose because her art was belittled and taken from her. She is purposeless because she has yet to find something within her that makes her life worth living. She has too much time on her hands, a destroyed purpose, and a reason to not find herself because money is always there. She isn't being intrusive in order to get love from anyone. She is being intrusive in order to get money and things.

The flashback to the Baek siblings as kids in the drama, shows In-ha with bruises across her torso - it wasn't just an aunt being tough, I thought it was clear enough she'd been physically abused on more than one occasion.

She's deeply flawed, greedy, materialistic and selfish, but she's also very perceptive - which is what makes her a great agent to drop uncomfortable truths. And despite the bombastic outer shell, there are also hints of vulnerability - like the scene where In-ho was leaving after his accident. I like the way she's played and I find her interesting, even if I wouldn't want her within a hundred feet of me.

Ah! Then I missed it. I still don't like her though..whatever the reason for her issues. The whole "forgive vicious behavior because the person has suffered thing" has already made me impatient with Jung and his chaebol sorrows (in the webtoon and drama). But he at least seems to be growing. Or self-aware.

Everyone in this drama has suffered. Hong-duplicate, stalker, Hong, Mom. They all have to endure. These younger folks are all in their hella needy immature college stage... and so far the only person the drama has forgiven for being a dick is Hong's dad. I don't mind forgiving one destructive needy person, or all of them. But kdrama forgives folks way too easily...simply because we "understand" the cause of their issues. I'm as tired of easy "understanding" redemption arc as I am of "crisis averted" endings.

Last night the wind was horrendous. Luckily -- for us-- no snow. But it was the kind of wind that made me wonder if some house was being blown down somewhere and made me steel myself for colder weather. Sure enough, it's superfrigid outside. And no snow! Been very lacking in snow this year. Hoping we won't get a drought this summer.

Don't we all. I remember Jo Jin Woong (the older Moo-hyul) was kind of disappointed that he didn't get a love interest in Tree.
I was hoping they'd at least make it happen in SFD.
I know it's not going to happen but I'm shipping him with Cheok anyway. I'm taking the fan-girling to another level against my better judgement lol.

I don't know how they're gonna get together, esp considering she's now de facto stepmother to dead king's kids. But "where there's a will, there's a way" I say. And we just have to hope the writer has a will. Although.... he seems to be hellbent on destroying all vestiges of family love, sibling love, childhood love, passionate love.....all in the name of power.

So, if Bang Ji loses his love, if Bang Won loses his love....how can we even hope for little old Moo Hyul to get a love? At this point, I'd be happy if he and Gab boon got together. But Se Gwang does seem like the perfect match for our sixth dragon. You and I can go down with this ship together.

Wholy moly...THE FEELS. I managed to marathon this drama in 1.5 days because it was so amazing. Props to all the actors who learned to sign for this drama because WOW. I'm new to Satoshi Tsumabuki and man is he handsome, I'd love to see more of his stuff. My favorite character was obviously Sae - her toughness and vulnerability rolled into this awesome female character that just didn't give a damn, just awesome! I hope Ko Shibasaki got a bunch of awards for her portrayal of this character because she deserves it.

I could go on and on about it..it's been a while since I've seen such a well paced and thought out drama...if any other jdrama viewers have more recommendations like this, please share!

Eita is very good. But the thing is with shows like Wakamonotachi, the whole cast is very good – Japanese dramas do the best of ensemble dramas with very, very solid actors. They don't throw in a random pretty face idol for one of supporting roles – Wakamonotachi is a perfect example of that.

Wakamonotachi: Satoshi Tsumabuki + Eita + Hikari Mitsushima – that's an amazing combo right there. Tasuku Emoto isn't as big (he usually plays supporting roles) but he's always very good and always in very interesting stuff (plus: he's married to Ando Sakura, who is a fabulous actress as well). Yu Aoi, Masami Nagasawa, Ai Hashimoto are also good, (Hashimoto is my personal fave here). Shuhei Nomura is slightly weaker, but he's still young and up-and-coming.

Naikou no Rikon: Eita, Machiko Ono, Yoko Maki, Gou Ayano –all very versatile.

Literally all of these actors do both film and dramas, and a lot of them work on those often rather small but very high quality indie movies.

Oh Eita is really good
I always had crush every time I saw him on screen, I respected him, he always play it differently but never less than good,
I watched on Mahoro Eki /Tada to do it all house and he is really funny, what I realize is almost all of his character is realy sad.
Eita on screenplay make me believe a drama more.

Nowadays I think his brother Kento is on the way to be a good actor, I hope he finds a good project.

Tsumabuki Satoshi is a solid actor. I'd watch pretty much anything with him in it – obviously some of his projects are better than others, but generally he makes good project choices.

Some of his stuff I have watched:

dramas:
Wakamonotachi (love it!)
Slow Dance (quite enjoyed this one)
Long Love Letter (he's got a small, supporting role, but it's an interesting & unusual drama and you got a whole bunch of J-actors very early in their careers here & looking cutely young. Kubozuka Yosuke is the actual lead – which makes the drama worth watching for, had a discussion about this guy's underratedness on Twitter recently.)

films:
Ai to Makoto (this is hilarious – this totally whacky territory)
Judge! (good)
Boat / No Boys, No Cry (a Japanese/Korea co-production. Like this a lot. His co-star is Ha Jung-Woo! Even reviewed it on my blog.)
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (interesting indie)

Well-paced and thought-out jdramas? Well, quite a few of the slice of life dramas are like that. Currently that description goes to the still-airing Itsuka Kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite Shimau – and I would recommend many of the writer's dramas (Wakamonotachi; Soredemo, Ikite Yuku; Mondai no Aru Restaurant, etc.).

I have only watched ep. 6 raw... but it was so obvious, that something went very, very wrong and that that boy is totally broken (a shell of his former self! And yet, glimpses of it are still there).

I trust Oto is going to kick him back to life. Despite the fact that they're both very similar (in being "givers", not "takers"), she was always the more straightforward & lively one in some way (ep. 1). The lovely thing with her is of course that she's the only one that doesn't ask anything from Ren, she'll tell him in the face what needs to be said, with no selfish motivation at all.

FINALLY MARCH BREAK!! Going to celebrate it with a kdrama binge ;) (between a whole lot of study tho -.-)
Currently watching :
CIIT. Yeah, whole lot of drama happening right now, and not in front of the camera. I really feel bad for PHJ, SKJ and the writer, hopefully the last 2 episodes will save some this mess. I personnally didn’t read the webtoon entirely so I can’t comment on the whole situation, but is does give a bittersweet feeling when I am watching the show.
OMHE. I am really sad this drama is not getting much love (not from koreans and nor from here :P) Its one of my favorites from the last few months. People mostly complain from the characters or the love triangle. I personnally find the characters nicely flawed, most of all Mimo. And usually I am one who abhor the unnecessary ones, I am actually liking this one. Don’t get me wrong, my heart breaks for HJ (and SH, but he is getting a happy ending so I don’t feel as bad). However, at the same time, I feel he learned the most of this relationship. Yes, I know, he would have lived fined in the ignorance, but the next time he falls in love, he will know how to grab onto and take care of the woman he loves. His happy ending will not be with Mimo, but it was probably never meant to be. The other Angels’ relationships have their up and down and they are not for the fluff (my fav is DaJeong). IMO, this is not only a rom-com, it is a sort of coming of age of people in their 30s.
Mme Antoine. This one is weird… I am not sure I get this one. I also don’t really get why I am watching this.
Started Descended from the Sun, I don’t want to jinx it, but I really like it so far!

Hello Beanies!!

CITT - actually stopped watching at episode 9 and just read the recaps. Poor cast, just wondering who benefits from all these fiasco.

OMHE - still sticking to it despite the faults I find in the editing and flow of the show. I still dislike HJ and the way he interpret all his ex-wife's comments about the way he handles a relationship. DJ and GH are a jewel to watch. DM and JW, don't age define your relationship and I do want more of your story than the noona-romance. AE and DB, sweet and I love how he's invested in AE now. Me thinks those ex gfs on the wedding were fling just to lessen his pain from getting hurt in loving AE, although that's not an excuse for cheating,

CBA and DOTS - giving it another week before I start marathon ing

SFD - took a break for two weeks now. Will definitely get back to it.

Cruel City - I wanted to see more JKH in a suit hahaha but still on episode two. Couldn't find a soft sub that would sync in a 540p that I DLed.

Have a great weekend ahead beanies!

Subscene seems to have Indonesian subs for 540p, though I suppose that doesn't help :p . But you might be able to resync with subtitle editing software; depending on the problem, it may not be particularly difficult. Subtitle Edit (freeware, and my own lifesaver) seems to have an option to resync from another subtitle if it is very bad.

I can't believe the scale of the mess that's been going down behind the scenes of Cheese in the Trap - they really did Soonkki and Park Hae-jin dirty, for them to be speaking up at all.

The funniest thing in this scenario, though, are those who are fans of the direction the drama has taken and are now running around claiming everyone else is too invested, or that maybe it was just an accident that the PD shut the webtoon writer out of consultation for the drama and that Park Hae-jin's scenes mostly ended up on the cutting room floor. It's one thing to be a fan of a character, but to try and excuse disrespect and unprofessionalism shown towards real-life people just because you don't like their work/characters, is beyond disingenuous.

For me, the worst thing is that what was originally a heroine-centric, female-led story with a pretty great and nuanced heroine, has now turned into a self-indulgent wank about the life and times of an impulsive pretty-boy who feels less like a person and more like a construct designed to cause Second Lead Syndrome.

People kept saying that this was justified because the drama didn't hew to rules about first and second leads etc, but I found that the more time the drama spent in wank about The Unfortunate Life of Baek In-ho, the more trite and typically kdrama-like it got.

When I saw the coming attractions, I thought... "yeah that's 'real life' alright!" This is what made All about my mother less than perfect. The drama folks didn't trust real life or organic storytelling and had to resort to kneejerk makjang. Crisis pulls in the viewership. Getting out of this over-the-top crisis implies "happy ending."

I'm not too invested so if I watch the finale, i'll probably just eyeroll.

Honestly, if they screw the pooch on the Cheese finale any more than they already have (and the chances are high, looking at that preview - In-ha going into full meltdown mode? Someone getting hit by a car?), I think I'll actually be done with kdrama-watching for a while.

At least current ones, anyway - I can never say no to a rewatch of Answer Me 1997. But I don't think I can ever trust a drama in progress again, though I've never been let down as hard as I was here.

I rewound so often to see who it was being pushed. Probably heroine. They better leave us with a Hong-Jung OTP because if they can't forgive him or allow for his "growth" then the drama would be saying we should write off all immature weirdos....and while I tend to avoid weirdos who use their power (Stalker, Jung, In Ha) to destroy folks or weirdos who are powerless (Lazy Sunbae, Hong-duplicate) , I don't think we should have a drama where the wounded weirdo type is cast aside. And seriously if Baek In Ha ends up being the only "understood/forgiven" wounded oddball, I will seriously question PD's storytelling skills.

You mean Inho Cantabile??

I feel like many kdrama can't really make strong female centric story or maybe doesn't believe that female story can hold the drama.
I also think that's why many remake of others into kdrama diesn't work so well

0

This is especially true for Korean remakes of Chinese productions. There is just an unnerving capability in Korean story-telling to weaken/simplify female characters to very basic tropes.

Even when Nirvana in Fire was all about it's bromance and lead male characters, all the female characters were strong, fleshed-out, and compelling. No female character was left with an impression of being an object (half a person) to supplement a male character like what Cheese has now done to Seol.

I think this has been what has gradually turned Kdramas off for me over the years. I used to love the romance, the funny antics, the charisma of many Korean dramas growing up...but now, I find many all the things that use to make me like them when I was younger so much more shallow and pointless.

Of course, this also means when there is a great Kdrama, it is really fantastic. Like Misaeng, which was just a breath of fresh air.

This happened to me with Tomorrow's Cantabile. It turned into His story instead of Hers, which was alright, but the. They reduced her to a whining five-year-old in a college atudent's bidy. It was so demeaning that it was hard to watch. I felt like, eve. With the incredible cast, the beautiful sets, and the solid story, that the PD and writer (of that incarnation of the drama) didn't have an understanding of a nuanced and complicated woman. I know that is harsh, but it was so apparent (to me) that Nodame's value in that story was minimal. It made me more aware of the marginalization of female characters in later dramas I watched.

Happy Friday all!

I am really sad about the troubles with CITT - In earlier episodes, I really wanted/looked forward to finding out what made our main guy tick and now it sounds like I'll never know unless I read the webtoon. :(. I am also confused (but may be wrong) - it sounded like the webtoon author wanted the drama to be different from the webtoon but then got upset with the path they have taken? Although I understand if it is mostly because they have short-changed us on understanding Jung. I feel for all of the actors but especially for PHJ, who has done an outstanding job of portraying a very complex character. His body language and facial expressions have been amazing and he has really conveyed both sides of Jung's character convincingly. Can we please start over on this drama and bring someone in to fix it because it was such a compelling story in the beginning. The actors really deserve better, imo.

OMHE - I love this show, even with the last few sad sad episodes (SO. MUCH. CRYING) I was tickled by the two men being total kids in the last episode - it was good to laugh again. And I can't tell you how many times I yelled "just kiss already!" at the main couple. Still anxious to see how/if DJ and hubby can overcome their history and rekindle their love. Please please please make it be a happy ending for them!

Last thing - does anyone else watch The Walking Dead? (completely different from kdramas, I know). I was totally intrigued to hear that Robert Kirkman (TWD) creator is a huge kdrama fan and has signed on to create a kdrama that could possibly have 5 seasons! First, because I love TWD and Second, because now my hubby has to realize that kdramas are not just for women (like Hallmark Channel movies here in the States :) ). Between Kirkman and Conan, I like seeing how kdramas are getting some mainstream press/promotion here.

Even with Coffee Prince, we were privy with Han-kyul, and his conflicted feelings for Eun-chan when he thought he was a guy and yes, even he was acting like a jerk to her since he doesn't understand his feelings at all. They didn't shy away from exploring that and make us actually sympathize with him. Like we could have used more time understanding Jung and what makes him tick, instead we get more of Creepy Jung and some of the viewers seeing him as a psychopath and therefore not good for Seol. And I was SO ready to call this my CP crack 2.0 and was actually more optimistic precisely because of this PD team.

So yes, it is questionable why this same PD is now not saying anything knowing full well that the fans are unhappy. Maybe there is a conspiracy, and unfortunately the cast and the team is a collateral damage of this.

Six Flying Dragons: Haven't caught up with this week's episodes yet, but I spoiled myself by reading the recaps because I was tempted by a backhug screencap of Bangwon and Boonyi at ep. 41's recap.(Wow, now that i think about it, they have backhugs back in Joseon? XD) Speaking about backhugs, I first thought that it was quite scary. You don't know who exactly is hugging you, and what if he kidnaps/assassinates you suddenly? And, sometimes, that looks more like a cage to the person who is hugged. I have never found backhugs romantic, but well, my heart skipped a beat just looking at the picture of BW & BY's backhug. ♥
Anyway, now that we've less than 10 episodes till the end, I'm getting more and more worried about Boonyi's fate, so I savour slowly and preciously every one of her scene with Bangwon. :(

This isn't related to Kdrama but does anyone here like Mamamoo? They're a kpop girl group who made their comeback today and I loved their new song very much!

It's awesome, they all very good at singing
I also love I Miss You and 1cm (but only half way since I don't like the last part)

It took me a while to not hate 1cm Pride because I don't really like songs that consist a lot of rap and heavy beats. And I know what you mean by the last part - too much repetition that it started sounding annoying. But it's nice to see something different in kpop girl groups!

Kdrama:

CITT -- When I think about how it could have been one of the best kdrama... Sigh. I'm still going to tune in for the last episodes to see the direction the story is veering to.

DoTS -- I'm liking the first two episodes. I have no idea about how the story will go. I'm just hoping they will not kill off the second male lead. I'm really loving the flirty dialog between the main leads, and that the heroine is not afraid to talk back /react to anyone disrespecting her.

Tw-drama:
Refresh Man -- I can't wait for its start, although I wonder if it's going to be a predictable rom-com storyline.
Oh well, at least we get to see Aaron again. Tbh, I've been missing Aaron and Puff !

Also, I haven't seen a tons of kdrama and tdrama, but I noticed that the heroine in tdrama is usually surrounded by some besties with whom she would actually hang out. I think it's quite rare in kdrama?

Variety:

Return of Superman -- I miss the triplets... But Daebaek is always fun to watch. Boy,, Roger's dad talks a lot.

1n2d season 3 -- I'm still watching this
I miss the races or missions that the show (any season) used to have. I wish this season had more of those.

Pls take care of my fridge -- there are only a few that have English subtitles, but I have enjoyed them.

1. I dropped CITT. Seeing the mess and whatnot, even as a fan of SKJ and KGE, I seriously cannot make myself watch the final episodes. Unless it takes a 360 turn I doubt I will finish that. Sad.

2. Signal. Jesus christ I am dying to know how the writer is going to wrap everything up in 6 episodes. But I have faith since the previous episodes have all been amazing.

3. DOTS. I squeal every 3 minutes while watching this one. SHK's character is so strong that I'm shocked KES wrote it. Not to mention how good of a job all the actors are doing. The leads have scorching chemistry and Episode 2 was phenomenal. I've found my crack drama for the year.

I haven't been following the reactions to the CITT mess here, but I worry that Park Hae Jin is sabotaging himself in the long run. I understand he is upset because the way he was treated is disrespectful, and I know the public sentiment favors him at the moment and the PD probably won't get to work for a while, but won't drama producers be wary of working with him or his company in the future, for fear of something like this happening again? I'm sure this stuff happens in the kdrama industry all the time, only it isn't always talked about like this. I feel bad for the writer too, who was probably receiving tons and tons of emails and questions about the drama while what she wanted to do was concentrate in her webtoon.

About the story itself they can't do anything about the ending now (I still wonder if they will actually show the original webtoon ending) but I never got the impression that Seol and Inho would get together despite his increased screentime. This whole controversy is definitely off-putting, I can't say I'm all that excited about the remaining episodes, luckily there's always the webtoon to go back to.

He is smart enough( and long enough to be in TV drama industry) to understand that he might get less job offers in the future when he speaks out. This is why it is so compelling to find he spoke his mind. I really get a feeling that he is smart and thoughtful guy therefore this drama must be something( negative) enough to push him to comment what he wants to say.

Park Hae-jin actually holds a bit of the upper hand in this situation, in that he's highly bankable in China and gets steady work there.

So he has more than just a blameless reputation and public sentiment backing him up on this one - he'll probably be fine, just like Lee Sung-min after Golden Time.

Happy weekend everyone! Dramas this week:

CITT - Fail! So much fail! I don't know how this matter will be resolved. Hopefully tvN and the PD will give their side as well. I hope Soonkki and the cast and crew will find strength.

DotS - Surprisingly, I loved the first 2 episodes! This given that among the writer's previous works, I only ever liked Secret Garden but still had issues with it. With DotS, I'm always surprised when the end credits roll. The 60 minutes just went by in a flash. Cinematography was breathtaking too. Glad Song Joongki picked this as his comeback drama. Hope it continues its momentum.

Six Flying Dragons - Gosh, this show has been awesome and we only have 8 episodes left!! I hope we see our precious Moohyul get his chyron soon. Happy with lots of Bangwon-Moohyul bromance! Also, I want to see how Bangwon unleashes his revenge! Can't wait!!

Signal - This drama never fails to deliver week after week. Chills!!! That is all.

Have to catch up on OMHE and start CBA (of which I've heard great things about).

Also, would anyone recommend Wu Xin the monster killer? Is it any good? Looking for cdramas to marathon while I wait for the next episode of my currently airing kdramas. Thanks! :)

Happy Friday!!! I got accepted to the college of my choice last week and went apartment shopping this week--with so many adventures along the way. Haha I haven't had so much fun in one afternoon for awhile. :)

Signal: two episodes behind, and I've been avoiding the temptation to read the recaps like a madwoman, but can't wait to watch them tonight! (and then read the recaps, and then rewatch them... I heard they were awesome last week). :) Glad to know it's still going strong. At first I was confused by why there was so little commenting compared to other dramas (past and current) when everyone seems to love it... and then I realized a lot of people are just on the same page with it: it's good. It's really good. 'Nuff said, hang on for the ride, and enjoy it.

Ghost: Finished it, it was ok (2 stars on my 0-3 scale). I needed something else to fill in the time between Signal, so I started I Hear Your Voice. :)

I Hear Your Voice: I needed something to watch while I was waiting for Signal, and I had heard good things. I'd avoided it cause I wasn't sure how I'd feel about a HS senior romancing someone almost 10 yrs their elder (noona or not). But holy cow, it's so good!

I've been remiss in watching premier episodes, but then again I don't usually like to start anything until ep 5-6 so I know I won't get caught in a waiting game (Signal is a glorious exception to the rule). I'll probably give DotS a go. I'm sorry to hear CITT has gone south so bad, I'd planned to watch it post-run, and now... Oh well. Have a good weekend, all!

Hi Everyone,

My radar is off, I'm error prone, tired and stressed out because I overburdened/over-committed myself (life, work, volunteering). Trying my best to finish my commitments so that I can untangle from things rest and rewind.

I know it's in reference to CITT but who is or what does Soonkki stand for?

Currently watching CBA, CITT, DOS, NH, OMHE, and Signal. (I've watched the first 3 episodes of MA, right now it's on hold.)

Thanks to the recent kdrama lull spell I was able to watch Nirvana in Fire and The Great Queen Seondeok.

The Great Queen Seondeok - Did my best to avoid spoilers. Man, those last few episodes were sort of hair–raising for me. I paused, stopped, took a deep breath, started again - repeat. Didn't realize I would be so invested and antsy about how things would play out and end. Does anyone know or have a guess about what her ailment/illness was?

After a few years of watching kdramas, I place a premium on good subs. Thanks Viki.com (Lost in translation is not always fun.) So before licenses to certain saguek dramas come to an end, I'm spurred to try to watch and finish as many of the old school/recent classics as I can. I've been putting it off for a while but I started Chuno (aka The Slave Hunters). It's 24 episodes, my goal was to watch 1 episode a day for the next few weeks. I missed the last 3 days. AndvI really wanted to start Six Flying Dragons but I think I'm sagueked out (did I just make up a word?).

Soonkki is the author of the CITT webtoon.

Is Nirvana in Fire good? I've been needing a new good C-drama to practice my listening skills. Biggest worry: will the music be insanely loud and overpower any dialogue?

Wow! What a week in k-drama land.

CITT: I think the whole situation is a bummer for a lot of different people. Is the actress going to be eager to do another k-drama or stick with movies? Park Hae Jin finally gets to be a lead in a successful k-drama, and this happens. I wonder if tvN, the PD and a film editor are working like crazy to re-tool the last episodes. Good for the actor for speaking out; I don't blame him at all.

Signal: It's wonderful and the rare k-drama I think I could actually convince my husband to watch.

DOTS: It's a popcorn k-drama. It is a bit cliche with the jerk US soldier and a lot of the scenarios, but I like the lead is not a total jerk as can happen with this writer and that the lead actress plays a woman I can relate to. I actually enjoyed Heirs as a cheesetastic drama. I hope this has a little more heft to it and stays away from as many tropes as it can. Oh and I hope they fire the person in charge of the background music...it's horrible.

Madame Antoine: Flawed but for some reason, I think probably the actress, I just go with it.

Come Back, Mister: Love this type of drama rom/com elements with ensemble cast and a whole slice of life bitterness that everyone knows is coming.

One More Happy Ending: Temporarily Dropped but I will pick it up again when I finish up a few of the above. I abhor love triangles so as one can imagine k-drama gets a bit challenging for me sometimes.

Good weekend to all.

Hi everyone,

I started Descendants of the Sun - so far so good. I'm not sure about Please Come Back, Mister, yet.

This week was filled with k-variety for me: Shaolin Clenched Fists ended with episode 10. The group did a performance at a network awards show. I liked Hara's go get 'em spunk, but everyone rose to the challenge (and it din't look easy at all).

Radio Star - i end up shaking my head every episode with the crazy guests and equally crazy hosts. It's so random.

Masked Singer - this continues to be an eye opener in terms of singers across the years and genres. I learn so much about Korean singers and styles. The quality of the show is up there, too 0 - a rare thing in k-variety.

Human Condition season 4 - I find the connection between the celebs and older people living in the outskirts endearing. I loved how Mr. Pooh got up the courage to try out for the local singing competition screening.

IC - Ugly Contest? I guess - only in Korea.

Kpop Survival Audition season 5 - Top 10 selected. 9 females, i male - that's very different from past seasons. The competition is tight, lots of talent.

I Live Alone, WGM (falling by the wayside for me), Please Take Care of My Refridgerator w/ Tablo - ha! - I'm hot and cold depending. Sure do miss Abnormal Summit, raw episodes show up still, but I'm sad they're not subbed.

The tulip leaves are poking through - that's good enough for me to say bye-bye to February and hello to spring!

Have a great weekend ~

Just when I thought it won't be possible to fall any deeper for Ryu Junyeol, Youth Over Flowers Africa episode 2 aired.

Anyway, I'm watching quite a few dramas these days. Only 4 weeks left for Dragons and it's going to be the hardest on me when it ends. It took over my life since October and it would surely leave an empty space in my heart.

Still haven't seen the 2 latest episodes of OMHE in full but it has lost my interest a long time ago. I'm watching it for Dajung's story and Kyungho's handsomeness.

Please Come Back, Ahjusshi is really fun! I don't understand what's going on 90% of the time but something about it touches my heart. Oh Yeon Seo is so hot!

Gonna watch Signal later when my mom gets home. So excited!!!!

I cheated on my true love, Six Flying Dragons, with CITT. Got burned. Now I'm crawling back and asking for forgiveness. I'll have to do that with Lee Je-hoon as well, as I've fallen behind on Signal. This week has been tiring and frustrating, even without all the kdrama drama, that I haven't had the energy to watch either of them anyways, much less marathon them.

I'm still disappointed. This is the first time I've been so confused about how much I like a drama due to it seeming like 2 different dramas mashed together. It's not like the latter half was outrageously boring. It was just...meh... Plus, when you realize how great of a drama it would have been, it really hurts.

I'm still looking forward to Memory. I just love the PD-writer duo so please! Don't let me down. And of course, Goodbye Mr. Black with Kim Kang-woo. Good stuff coming up. Pied Piper? Beyond that, I don't remember much else.

Signal - Absolutely riveting!!! Good in so many ways. Cute how it takes the saying 'the winds of change' literally but yet has it played so muted-ly, it does not irritate.

Ep 11 ** no spoiler ***
Loved the unexpectedly funny of the 1998 police department. It told us so much about Soo Hyun and Jae Han and was hilarious to boot, and best of all it was not out of place but so organic to the characters and their story.

Hi @ fab

I'm not too worried about the network. I'm getting the sense that the strange affair of CITT is the result of a unilateral decision made by the overall one in charge, who could make it. The network might be just as shocked as we are LOL. The show has disappointed and betrayed us greatly, but at least it has got so many expressing views and makes for an interesting RL (instead of fictional) drama all on its own! :D

What a shame that the corporate powers of TVN decided to pander to the shippers of In Ho and destroyed such a wonderful story. What began as a complex plot and characterization has disintegrated into a 2nd rate k drama . Why fill all the moments with useless piano playing and leave your main characters backstory unresolved? I doubt it was the PD who made this decision but whoever did this should be fired. It's not about who should get the girl, the story was about complicated characters and how they solved life issues.
It is an insult to the audience to think that we could not understand a complicated character. The staff at TVN need to do some serious evaluations of their of their audience base. They let us and their actors down.
