Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 25-31, 2016
by HeadsNo2
The ratings landscape certainly seems to be on the uptick in general, as opposed to when we were all watching shows scoring below the 10% mark. Still, we’re at a point where numbers in the teens are coveted, so anything falling below that mark is usually really far down on the drama totem pole.
As far as cable goes, tvN seems to be the only network capable of competing with the Big 3, while JTBC continues to put out quality content that’s usually a little less high profile. With Signal, tvN is balancing its more comedically light material with heavier stuff — it’s dark, deep, and thoughtful, which seems to be resonating with audiences, thus attributing to its ratings climb.
Cheese’s numbers are nothing to scoff at either, while Moorim School continues to do the worst out of any drama currently airing (cable not included), which may indeed make its recent episode cut a much needed mercy killing. Not that the show isn’t enjoyable in its own right, but at the end of the day, sometimes it’s just better to cut your losses. (As long as you pay your actors and crew—even some of the highest-profile shows have been guilty on that charge.)

TvN's good shows seem to do about 3.5-5.5 now that they have this solid run behind them. Anything above 3 is solid and above 5 is really excellent. Hitting 8? People are getting bonuses for sure.

Always wonder why I Have a Lover suffers such low ratings despite the great casts, plot, and OST compared to My Daughter Geum Sa Wol. No offense to Geum Sa Wol's fans. I Have a Lover is just so good and addicting. Ji jin hee and kim hyun joo nail every scenes given to them. If anyone haven't seen the drama, give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Maybe the writer needs to ask herself why the ratings keep dropping. I don’t think the people are that interested in JE and HK as a couple. I think if the writer made HK and BS a couple, the ratings would grown. The Netizens would just die, but the ratings would increase.

i agree with mimi i mean i tried watching a few episodes but as soon as they started hinting that JE and HK were going to get back together i stopped watching ( i didn't know the plot of the drama AT ALL before watching it) cause god, i hated his character with such passion and i didn't think i could stomach their relationship. No doubt that the actors are very good at their job but just his character...
i don't know if making JE and BS a couple would increase ratings but idk at least people could sit through the rest of the plot.

From comments, netizens like them together and always have. The most recent comments people seem to be complaining of the plot dragging and that there's too much revenge. They want to see more of HK and JE together. So that seems to be the reason.
International viewers were the main ones that hated them together and favored BS.
Kkuljaem's blog is a great site to read about netizen comments regarding kdramas but of course, they are full of spoilers.

IHAL is best drama for for me. Amazing chemistry and acting by JJH and KHJ. I think the low rating is due to the beginning painful 9 episodes. I almost miss this great drama because the few first episodes are too painful to watch .I no longer depends on rating. I dropped Please, mum midway even i am great fan of Eugene .

It's so interesting though. IHAL really caught me. I liked that they showed the leads can have a major faults.
Not every relationship is black and white and the loss of a child creating a division is all to real when it happens in the real world.
I truly wished more ppl would give the drama a chance but i also understand cheating and adultery to be a real no go for some persons as well.
Right now it is dragging a bit and have lapsed as a result though.
Is the rating for Madame Antoine considered good though?

I pity Geum Sa Wol viewers. they're probably questioning themselves if they're just masochists... No matter how much I love Baek Jin Hee, I couldn't proceed with the drama. and to think I stopped just before the drama became over-the-top ridiculous. I watched it while it was "just ridiculous". heh.
I'd really like to have a convo with BJH why she turned down Six Flying in favour of GSW.

In the end, I still agree BJH decision to star My Daughter Geum Sa Wol and dropped Six Flying Dragons, although it is considered to a lot of viewers as frustrating drama (I haven't watch it MDGSW)
She gain exposure among TV viewers (the rating is HIGH!), also she's the main character! And she has a lot of screen time because she's the main character!
When compared to SFD...she won't have that much exposure... (I heard that Shin Se-kyung screen time is so little compared to Yoo Ah-in and Kim Myung-min)
I think a lot of Korean young actress will stumble upon dilemma in their road to higher tier, but I hope next time she would pick a better project :)

She probably expected a drama that'll focus entirely on her. She'll have little screen time in SFD if she took SSK's role. Even if she does a good job, she won't get that much credit. Plus, with SHE she can extend on her good working relationship with MBC. Perhaps they'll give her a better drama as compensation now that GSW has evolved into the Jeon In-hwa show.

Actually Jeon In-hwa's condition is very similar towards Lee Yu-ri's condition when she was in Jang Bo-ri...they both stole the show from the main character
In the end, people still remember Oh Yeon-seo so, I am quite confident that people are most likely going to remember Baek Jin-hee just like Oh Yeon-seo in the end of the series...
Compared to SFD...people will most likely only remember KMM and YAI...

Watched from ep 9 and still loves it. Why it has low ratings despite its popularity and favorable reviews on-line? Some mention:
Overall atmosphere is too dark. Acting is great but there is no cheerful plot line (Heagang's twin sister has some but she also has dark back-story). Trend of weekend drama is cheerful/happy family drama (like Geum Sa-wol), but IHL is opposite. And it is basically middle-age couple's love story, and its main theme was affair, so it has limitation - pulling just (not young) female viewers. And plot is lacking in reality and getting repeated. And even though Main leads are crazy good, second leads are too simple and became less significant.

I agree. It's not getting enough viewership it deserves. Then again, Signal is evidently also doing well for good reasons. Both are exceptionally crafted and carried out by casts who are very much in character. I look forward to seeing both to their completion!

Yeah madam antoine is really good.Don't get the bad reviews at all.It has got such a clever storyline and interesting mix of characters.Though I am not depending on kkulijaem to get the majority audience reaction, considering how they almost never showed the upvotes from the viewers who loved Taek-Deok Sun.There were so many korean fans who were happy with the ending, but till the end kkulijaem kept posting that majority of the audience is not pleased with Taek being the husband lol.Really shows the biases when they are translating the reactions from only one side.

Same, I'm seriously enjoying it and I hope the writer sticks to her guns instead of trying to bring up the ratings be resorting to insanity. Han Yeseul's carrying the show like nothing else (though Sung Joon in a white shirt make have made me drool)

I'm not surprised. There are some glaring flaws in the premise, several stock characters (including one of the leads) and all kinds of holes in the setting.
Han Yeseul is generally fine (though I'm finding her character inconsistent), but Sung Joon... is bland.
Most of all, it doesn't feel like there's anything new and fresh here.

Madame Antoine got better in the 3rd and 4th episode I feel. Things are starting to really happen. They must have felt very confident about this show's story - the previews have Jin Woo with his shirt off in episode 5 so they must have thought they didn't need to lure viewers in with that beefcake early on.

Yep, Fri/Sat is a much better slot for tvN, with much less competition.
Mon/Tue on tvN usually scores 1.0 to <2.0 if it is successful. Only very, very few shows did better than that.
Cheese in the Trap is by far the most successful tvN-Mon/Tue drama ever in terms of ratings. Reply'97, so far the most successful by a huge margin, averaged around 3.5 (with a huge peak towards the end).
Weekend shows on tvN could reach 3% in the past, and recently they are almost expected to reach 5% and better if they are quality shows.

Yes CitT get those viewers especially with how late it comes on. I hope it can snake into the 7 or 8. The cast and crew really deserve and are earning high ratings. Gayness for Signal doing so well. For the type of drama it is, I was scared it wouldn't.

I love Moorim. Glad it's only 16 ep, bc in my opinion, 20 is almost always too long, but love this show. At my old age, I don't give a damn wether it's perfectly executed or not (of course, it's a bonus when it is and I appreciate it), I just want some fun escapism.
So far, I'm watching CIIT, Moorim, Another H Ending, Mme Antoine. Will catch up with Remember after it finishes, and I read the recaps on Mom (love Eugene).

I Have A Lover is the best for me, but do agreed the plot a little bit slow. But the acting, BGM saved the drama so far. If only this drama has lesser episode, maybe better. I have said many times, if only the first 10 episodes of this drama didnt dragging the issue of infidelity, maybe the viewership could be better. If only the writer brought the issue of infidelity in 3-4episodes it should be enough. This is the only complaint i have for this drama.
Geum Sa Wol? Im gonna say the one who carried the show so far is Jeon In Hwa. This show is a mess, but this pretty ahjumma really carrying the show. Baek Jin Hee is a main lead, but she just stay the same from beginning until now. If i can say, she doesnt have so much significant in this drama.

Still rooting for Madam Antoine... It's such a fun and breezy rom-com. Plot wise, it is miles better than the no-plot-whatsoever but still enjoyable, fluffy rom-com Oh My Venus. I just wish Sung Joon can deliver a more charismatic and consistent performance here.

I'm not familiar with how Korean dramas work in terms of ratings. Is there a danger Madame Antoine will be cut? I love this show in spite of its absurd psychology ethics - it has some really laugh out loud moments and I love seeing the mature main lead take on the know-it-all psychologist. I have no doubt that the ending will show him up in a be-ribboned tree shouting out her name.
Cheese in the Trap, Madame Antoine and One More Happy Ending are three of the more enjoyable rom-coms I've seen in some time (all of them beat plot-less Oh My Venus to hell) - none of them are omitting the comedy for melodrama so far, which happens far too often with so called rom-coms.
