I might never come back. But he wants to go on a hiatus??! I mean.... he can't!!!! "Hunting Ground" will only be aired in July 2016!! I'm recapping Disguiser and Nirvana in Fire, which will take me a while, but not that long! Ahhhh, what to do?

There still is Good Times, but I have to admit I'm underwhelmed by this show.

And there is Ballad of the Desert, in which he is only the second lead to Eddie Peng, and it is nowhere near NiF, too.

Fan life is hard, isn't it?

I've watched Good Times, with lots of ffwarding..... he looks extremely good in it though. I didn't even mind that there are no subs in the latter half cause, well, I wasn't really interested in the plot :D

0

He looks good, but his character is so wishy-washy I have a hard time liking him.

0

I think I was blinded by his beauty. I didn't mind. I just thought he was a bit ... well, dumb. Like... had no emotional intelligence at all.

0

I enjoyed Good Times, as a bit of a slice of life set up. The father and friends were fun. But Nirvana in Fire was amazing.

0

I tried Ballad/Sound of Desert too but a bit disappointed since he's only the second lead and his character is a bit too frustratingly tragic. And yes, it's nowhere near NIF.

I need more Hu Ge in something like NIF!!

0

I became a fan of Hu Ge back in 2009 for his performance in Chinese Paladin 3, which got me backtracked to Chinese Paladin, one of his earlier series.

And there's the movie Butterfly Lovers . While the movie was beautiful yet lacking, his performance as antagonist was outstanding, movie flaws aside.

I tried to watch Good Times, but after one or two episodes, I couldn't sustain my interest to continue watching. Due to recommendation here, I started Nirvana in Fire about two weeks ago. Finished it yesterday. It was sooo good and then soooo sad sooo heartwrenching, I had trouble sleeping last night.

I have The Myth in my collection to watch next while waiting for complete set of The Disguiser.

One other take away from Nirvana in Fire besides Hu Ge is the 'lost puppy' Wang Kai aka Prince Jinyang. There were very few and rare glimpse of his smile in NIF but boy, he's pretty when he does that. Too bad his character is so sad and lonely. I survey Love Me If you Dare since he's in it too, and looks like he smiled a lot in that one. That series will be in my to watch list, if only to finally watch him smile more. haha. Besides, Hu Ge's Chinese Paladin 3 co-star is the main cast. So why not.

0

Bah, Viki has temporarily removed The Disguiser - I wanted to go back and finish it.

My wife is also in HG Land. She marathoned Chinese Paladin. The show is kind of whack, HG is so young there. I was enthralled by Liu Yi Fei, so if you think someone is fine as hell, your tolerance for whack increases.

I agree.

I have heard of him before but have never seen him in anything before I marathoned watched "Nirvana in Fire" which I loved. Both he and Wang Kai are wonderful, great actors (and very easy on the eye) but I also loved his General friend (not so bright but loyal and also hot)..

However, I wish Chinese dramas were not dubbed - I loathe dubbing.

Same here. Out of all the currently airing dramas, I'm only into these two now.

I'm still watching Oh My Venus, but personally not really liking it. Maybe it's the lack of story or the whole cliche (sorry to the other fans).
I'm waiting for more episodes of Remember before starting it.

I so agree with you about the lack of story in Oh My Venus. The characters, though, are so lovable...I wish they were all teleported to the another drama where substantial things actually happen. And SJS as always is super dreamy, which is probably the only reason I watch it. They need to do Masters Sun 2 with that guy in it.

Barely hanging in on OMV, wish writers would develop storylines about the other characters backgrounds like Joon Sung and his mother, Woo-Sik getting together with Soo Jin, how the Kim family became so dysfunctional, etc. Characters are put in, but not developed.

At least they did it in the past, don't know if that changed. But 51k is not mentioned at the end, so I fear it is a blunt ripp-off.

I just caught up with Six Flying Dragons and I think its awesome as well ... which is saying something since it is the first historical drama I've stayed with. My only complaint is the guy playing the general, Bang Won's father. He is SO one-note. And his one look is concern shading into fear and anxiety. I wonder why anyone would follow him into battle. On the other hand, his brother has that warrior-leader look and I wish he was playing the general.

We’re baking in the 40 degree summer heatwave here, a big contrast to the winter wonderland most of you in the northern hemisphere are experiencing right now. Christmas does not associate with snow, mittens, ear muffs, cozy fireplaces, but thongs, tank tops, beach picnics and ‘barbie’. I’m still a bit hangover from drinking two cold beers and a big glass of shiraz this afternoon at the office Christmas party, everyone is in a happy festive mood already. Not sure if there will be OT next Fri, so I’m wishing all beanies here in OT a very Merry Christmas in advance! (*^_^*)

I absolutely enjoy watching ep 11 & 12 of Reply 1988 this week, my only complaint of R88 being the bowl haircut of the boys which look like mushroom caps. Though there was a resurgence of the Beatles mop top hairstyle in the late 80s, it was a bit excessive in R88 in that all the boys look kind of nerdy. If you can’t resist the charm radiated by a bespectacled nerdy Taek sitting in deep concentration in-front of the Baduk board, you will reel with dizziness when you see Yoon-hoo(PBG) in a suave side-part haircut playing the cello. Probably because I just watched Cantabile Tomorrow recently, I couldn’t help but compare the hairstyles of Park Bo-gum and Go Kyung-pyo in these two dramas. Particularly, due to GKP’s thick hair and the pin straight bowl cut, Sun Woo looks a bit dense, though he is supposed to be the smartest kid in the gang. Talking about bowl cut, Kim Soo-Hyun immediately comes to mind. The more stylist variation of bowl cut seems to be his signature hairstyle in dramas. I think it suits him, though he did look a bit nerdy too in The Producers, but I am not sure if that was due to his great acting skills or his looks.

Btw, does anyone know if English translation for lyrics of R88 OST Hyehwa-Dong exists on the internet? I first came across this melodious song sung by Sung Si-kyung a few years ago not knowing the title. I thought he is the original singer and it is a romantic love song. So I was quite surprised to hear it in R88 and to learn that it was originally sung by Zoo, and from the title, it seems to be a song about the Hyehwa or Ssangmun suburb or town or whatever they mean by ‘dong’ in Korean.

Wow Your office Christmas party allows beers? Ours was in Bowling alley (that is healthy!), with unlimited PIZZA and soda (that is not healthy! Lol). Yeah I live in South too, so It has been long time since Christmas feels like Christmas. Last time I felt the mood was when I was in NY.

Oh about Go Kyung-pyo in Reply 88, someone posted that His deceased father must be the reporter who died in 1983 (well-known) accident in Korea (Interesting all these guesses about who the character is).

Hi fan, we had pizzas too, with cheese and dip platter. Alcohol is allowed in my workplace only during Christmas celebration and Melb Cup race watch. All my life, Christmas has been spent in sweltering heat except the one time spent in Korea Yongpyong ski resort more than 10 years ago. It snowed on Christmas day itself, so it was a very memorable white Christmas for me. I went there because of Winter Sonata, and at that time, it did not occur to me that I would be so addicted to kdrama for the next 10 years, and probably many more years to come!

Manin, I strongly encourage you to go watch CT. Don't worry, it will not jeopardise your love for Nodame Cantabile, you will end up liking both versions. I didn't like Joo Won when I started watching it, and I ended up being defeated by his charms. GKP is delightfully entertaining, and PBG is so gentleman and endearing, if you like both of them in R88, the more you should watch CT, they are even more likable in it.

Drama-wise:
Finished Bubblegum- There was no story, but loved characters, especially OTP.

SFD: Still enjoying. I wish all dragons have equal parts of screen time. (Totally my opinion!) I still can't get used to Yoo Ah-in being Bang-won (His baby face and voice are sometimes distracting). I peeked at the DC inside(Biggest Korean drama fan site where most of nicks and ideas come out- like Umforce, Shut Up ?). Wow so much hate.

I am waiting for next episode of Splash splash love, and surprised JB hasn't post the recap yet.
Kim Seul-gi (and Yoon Du-joon) said the rain they got was sea/salt water, which got into her eyes, giving her hard time. -Things actors/actresses go through to make us happy!

I watched Snow Lotus/SeolRyonHwa (time travel romance sageuks). Story was interesting but I felt like watching some summary of a drama. Wished it was 16 ep not 2. How can they do that with Ji Jin-hee?

Lastly, Carole McDonnell posted about the suicide rate in South Korea in last OT: I thought why out of blue?
And then we got this news -Gang Doo-ri(22) who was a student in 'Sassy go go' killed herself. RIP.

I stopped believing in award ceremonies anymore, who gets nominated and who gets awarded are all driven by some hidden agenda that only the organisers themselves know. From watching The Producers, we see that interplay between the station staff and the idol's agency can be so convoluted, driven by twisted motivation from both sides and swayed by whims and fancies of those who call the shots. So is there still anything left to expect for the outcome?

Hello beanies.. ;-)

-SPLISH SPLASH LOVE: It's totally different from what I've expected. It's a cute show but it's the kind of drama that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm pretty sure none of Joseon king behaved like that. I didn't watch many sageuk so I wasn't really sure, but sometimes the speech sounds too modern in my ear.

-REMEMBER: Now that Jinwoo and Dongho decided to work together, I'm beyond excited. Love the way they use Jinwoo's super memory to pursue a new lead. And heol~ turns out, our law student Yeokyung is Gyungman's sister?! And how unsettling it is to see Gyungman totally being under his father's thumb?

-IMAGINARY CAT: A cute fat fluffy cat, Yoo Seungho, and adorable love story. What more do you need?

Anyway, anyone watched Splash Splash Love? I swear Kim Seul GI is tooooooo cuteeee! Her chemistry with Do join are so great despite of their gap in height ha ha. ? I laughing so hard at the scene when Do Join thought the kimbap was a... Bomb and thought that it gonna explode. Lol I'm dying? can't wait for epi 2, KSG looks pretty in hanbok ? auw everything is cute in this drama. I pray on 2016, besides Kim So Eun get a lead role, Kim Seul GI will get a lead role too. This girl is too good to be wasted!

On the other note, on Love Me If You Dare, I was almost have no complaint until recently i found it it is so disturbing in the scene when Bo Jin Yan speaks with Susan. It looks weird when BJY speaks in Chinese but Susan speaks in English. It is a major turn off for me.?? hmm

I Have A Lover is getting better n better. The best scene on last episode was when HaeKang the Dragon ate Kang Seol Ri with her strong and sharp words and KSR can't even reply her with anything, and burst into tears. ??? you go Queen! ?

I was going to post about the language thing in Love Me if You Dare...it's even more glaring in this week's episodes since they are set in the US. Basically, for those who aren't watching, all the American characters speak English in conversations with the Chinese and Chinese-American characters, and all the Chinese and Chinese-American characters speak Chinese. So, they are holding a conversation in two languages. Mostly in previous episodes between Susan (FBI agent) and BJY, and Tommy (one of the villans) and BJY, but in this week's episodes there are more American characters and its the same thing. Clearly, as a Chinese-American college professor in the US, BJY would likely be a primarily English speaker. In fact, all of the main Chinese characters in this show would likely know at least some English. BJY's girlfriend would likely know a lot because of her educational background and her career goals before becoming entangled with BJY. The police officers would likely know at least some. And BJY's sister and best friend are both Chinese-American.

I was wondering if this production decision is a "China thing" or not. Shows from Korea and Taiwan would typically show a dialogue between an American and a native in English (unless the American had lived for a while in Korea/Taiwan and knew the language). Shows from Taiwan sprinkle a good amount of English into the dialogue (it seems to allude to sophistication and education?). Korea a little less, but our cute Korean-American UFC manager in Oh My Venus switches back and forth all the time (likely because English is his primary language).

I don't know how to put it, it looks so weird. This is a major flaw in this drama. Before, I was going to just close my eyes, but not now. I feel so weird and bothered with this. If WH is not good in English, they should cast someone who can speak English if they want to maintain this storyline. Or otherwise, don't bother with FBI things. WH was so sexy but I am sorry I just can't keep about this myself.

The scene when BJY talking with Tommy, ha one speaks English one speak Chinese. And they speak like nothing is happened, and they understand each other's language. Hah. I just think this Is weird. A total disappointment. ?

Thanks for the link! Since I can't tell the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese, I had no idea that the dialogue language weirdness in the show went beyond the one sided English conversations! Also, it sounds like this was not a "China thing" at all but the production company simply not caring enough to be thorough and realistic.

Thanks for the link. I found the discussion really interesting, especially when the Hong Kong native Cantonese speaker expounded on the different strains and accents of Cantonese.

I agree that there's been some mistakes (clearly Tsim Sha Tsui doesn't have a beach.) And it may be the production company didn't stretch hard enough to dub Wallace's speech into English, since if he's been in the US that long, he should be more comfortable in English than Mandarin.

But I actually justified the language choice to myself and enjoyed it. I speak 4-5 languages, but some not so well as others. For example, I definitely understand Mandarin or French much better than I can speak it. I've worked in set-ups where everyone's from a different place and has different mother tongues, so there have been situations where someone might explain something in Mandarin or French (because it's easier for them) but I'd reply in English because it's easier for me. But there's enough mutual understanding of to allow that to happen, so it doesn't feel weird at all.

So in a way I prefer this choice, rather than have the Chinese or Korean actors struggle to say something in English and it totally ruins it. (Lee Min Ho, I still haven't got over your pronunciation of "anniversary" in The Heirs.)

I think I laughed and swooned in equal measure over Splash Splash Love. And then both laughed AND swooned over quite a bit (the tangerine!)

The casting could not have been more perfect, and both Yoon Doo-joon and Kim Seul-gi need to go into full-length drama lead roles rightaway.

Hello everyone, Dramabeans's fan since at least 4 years now I just was a silent reader whom never posted one comment. I decided to do so because I need your help, Beanies! And more specifically Beanies who saw Sungkyungkwan Scandal. I know, I know it's an old drama now but this one was a huge hit among Beanies so I'm pretty sure somebody can help me.
Non Sungkyungkwan Scandal viewers beware, my questions include some spoils!
I just finished it for the second time (I already watched it a couple of years ago) and what buggued me the first time bugged me again this time. So it's about the Geumdeungjisa quest. In episode 17, the king summoned our four heroes to find it. If I understood the king's explanations correctly, the Geumdeungjisa disappeared the very same night when Jae Shin's brother and Yoon Hee's father were killed during their trip to bring it to the king. What I don't understand is how the king is so sure that the Geumdeungjisa wasn't destroyed or stolen during this night? Maybe thanks to the coded will of Yoon Hee's father which hints that the Geumdeunjisa is hidden somewhere?
But it doesn't sound logical. We see a a scene where Yoon Hee's father is accepting the king's mission to bring back the Geumdeungjisa to the palace so why oh why the coded will existed in the first place? and why the Geumdeungjisa is hidden somewhere and wasn't with Jea Shin's brother and Yoon Hee's father when they were killed?
The only explanation I found is that they chose not to bring the Geumjeungjisa back to the palace (because they feared, they'd be robbed) and hid it instead. Yoon Hee's father just in case the night's trip would go wrong left a coded will for the king to find the Geumjeungjisa later. So to sum up, Yoon Hee's father didn't respect the king's order to bring back the Geumdeungjisa to him and they sacrified themselves this night to make the Noron's believe that what they stole and destroyed was the Geumdeungjisa. .
But what bothers me is that not once this theory was approached by anyone in the drama. Not the king, not Professor Jang and not even our heroes who are the ones who investigate the case. Not once, did they question the fact that maybe the Geumdeungjisa was destroyed that night and I find it weird. It's like it's obvious for them (and for us viewers) that the Geumdeungjisa wasn't in the possesion of Yoon Hee's father and Jae Shin's brother when they were killed, but it's not at all!!! They never clearly assert that the Geumdeungjisa was hidden that night. An explanation ( or maybe a flashback of this night) would have clarified the plot.
I checked all the recaps I could find on the net but, nope, didn't find a clear answer to know if my theory is good or not.
I just loved Sungkyunkwan Scandal but what I hate the most in a drama is plot holes or inconstencies in a story so maybe I missed something or I didn't understand anything at all! So if a kind Beanie can explain to me the logic...

I don't remember that but if you could explain the ending I'd like it very much. :) How did she stay in the University? Everybody finds out and she just becomes a teacher. Is she still hiding forever and pretending to be a man? I loved SS but thought the last eps were pretty weak.

To be honest, I never questioned the ending. For me, it was clear that Yoon Hee kept on disguising herself to stay at Sungkyungkwan. It seemed logical to me. It's after reading all the comments on Dramabeans that I discovered that the ending was not clear and could have been interpreted in different ways...

Oh, I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who was confused by that. I desperately hoped that I had simply missed a key conversation...but if you watched for it the second time around and then read over all the recaps...then I guess I didn't miss it. Maybe it's something that was glossed over during the translation to English subtitles? *grasping at straws*

OMO! So you noticed too! I thought I was to only one who noticed it and told myself that I certainly missed something. I'm kind of obsessive and I like to understand things (that's why I hate plot holes) so this lack of explanations in the story drove me crazy. I even read all the comments of the related episodes to see if someone had the same questions as me but nothing. What dramas make us do!^^

But plot holes or not, for once, I'll let it slide and I think I'll watch it a third time later. Too in love of Song Joong Ki and Yoo Ah In character and their relationship. Best bromance ever!

Hi beanies hope you've all had a great week, mine is so so,i keep finding things i want to buy but can't afford, sucks. This is why i don't leave the house.
The malls and streets are crowded every one is hyper about Christmas and im the only one waiting for January when everyone is back to normal and complaining about how broke they're, and I'm all suckers. End of January is the time to shop, retailers are desperate then coz no one's buying, Ho Ho ho its my favorite time of the year.
Seriously though people are acting crazy for just one day or is it two, anyway I'll be continuing my Christmas tradition of switching off my phone lying on my bed in energy saving mode and binging on dramas.
Speaking of, I have been watching Scandal :shocking and wrongful incident, longest drama title ever which totally deserves.Wow, just wow, seriously good makjang addictive and yes, very shocking. I got so shocked at one point that i spoke Korean ? which made me laugh at myself since an African speaking Korean is very weird.
Had to balance the makjang though with light so i decided to re-watch SASSY GO GO again because Kim Yeol 's eye smile and kang yeon do 's crazy laugh makes everything better.
OH MY VENUS, episode 9 has got to be my favorite episode so far.i like how the OTP is so straightforward.
REPLY 1988 I'm glad these latest episodes have toned down on the touching and totally great moments i can finally say i went a week without crying. Now someone give Junghwan a hug and tell me what ive been reading in the recap comments is false and Taek won't die because after thinking about it, the writers to create reasons why Junghwan can't be with Deok sun. Nah if you kill off the cutest and most lovable person Writernim... You can't, you won't????

Μy sister and I watched Scandal back in'13 and we loved the writer, the characters and the impeccable acting. We had previously watched Happy Together (a '90s drama filled with young actors who later became super stars) and that's how we both felt in love her writing. We have enjoyed at least 3 or 4 dramas from the same writer and we are currently watching I Have a Lover.

Rainy day today, but the forecast for Christmas Eve is the mid 70's.

Lost a furry friend this week. Our cat Peachfuzz passed away at the ripe age of 16+ years.

Splish Splash Love: Kim Seul-Gi :)

Behind on the both sageuks 6FD & Merchant

Glamorous Temptation: Guilty pleasure watching this.

Watching Nirvana In Fire. The wife marathoned it weeks ago, passing me, so now I've resumed watching it , about 1/2 way through.

The wife, on her own on voyage to Hu Ge Land, watched Chinese Paladin. Liu Yi Fei is gorgeous.

Watching Love Me If You Dare. Saw some photo shoots of Sandra Ma sporting shorter hair, so cute, looks good on her.

Also watching A Dream of Red Mansions , enjoying it. Sometimes the music is inappropriate, like WTH was that ?

Last but not least , Answer Me 1988. Squee. Don't care who turns out to be the husband, enjoy the overall story. Kudos to the writers.

Dazzling Temptation is crazy. I'd venture to say that if Mystery Science Theater 3000 snarked on drama series rather than films, this one would qualify. Tom Servo and Crow would have a field day.

She was the Grim Reaper where mice were concerned. One day she was meowing quite loudly at the front door.

Laid out in a row, neat as can be, were five mice. She wanted to make sure we got a look at her handy work.

Birds always got the best of her though. Around nesting time they would harass her without mercy. Nature can be cruel but it seems to have a way to even things out.

Ah, love me a great mouser. When Spring came around, I feared for the birds in my yard. Tons of little animals met their demise at the mouth and claws of Miss Ralphina. Mice too couldn't survive.

John, sorry to hear about your family pet, Peachfuzz.

For 6FD, I actually watched 20 before 17-19, but like many longer shows, sometimes skipping to catch up is possible without losing the gist. I'm okay with that.

AM 1988, I agree, don't care who the husband is, the friendships are good enough either which way. Very enjoyable.

Otherwise, I'm watching different shows than your list - Imaginary Cat and Remember - War of the Son both with Seung Ho, both good.

Wrapped up Bubblegum, predictable but nicely paced like a decent YA.

Hi Everyone!

Making a quick stop in the OT, as I have to go in a bit. ..... I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the holiday season.

Watched this week:

Six Flying Dragons - Wow. Can this get any better? ..... Of course it can.

She Was Pretty - Finished this last night. Liked it. ...... This may be a little nutty, but I think Choi Siwon's second lead character is right up there with that second-lead-favorite of mine, Pil-joo from the drama Best Love.

Oh My Venus - So I watched another 2 eps. So that makes 4 watched. ..... So far, things are moving along nicely. ...... How cool would it be to have a personal trainer with "So Ji-sub-like" attributes? *giggling*

That's about it for now. ...... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Also I was wondering where I could find Joseon X-Files with English subs. I've been searching for quite some time but couldn't find it. Do I have to search for it under a different name or something?

Love Date. Haven't laughed so much watching a drama. I finished quite a few jdramas past few months. Thanks to the lovely beanies who recommended a few. I too would like to know if there are any other romcoms similar to Date.

Just finished Okitegami Kyoko no biboroku. Episode 10 is without subs but I just couldn't wait. Easily my second favourite after Date. It is fast and smart. The two leads are a joy to watch. Strong writing I must say. Funny too. It gave me warm fuzzy feelings as well. I think I read alua's post about it and I decided to try it out. Good thing I did. Really like 37.5c no namida..cried buckets in some parts. A lot less funny, more drama. The leading men had horrible hair though. They were so distracting!

Currently watching Nobunaga Concerto. A little late in the game! I like it so far. Im not dropping it so that is a good sign. A good balance of comedy, time travel, politics. I am rooting for the guy to become the true leader of his clan.

Saikou no Rikon (The Great Divorce ) might be of interest. It's not a straight up comedy, there is marital discord as the title implies, so there are some heavier scenes. Can't ask for a better cast. Eita and Ono Machiko play one couple and Ayano Go and Maki Yoko play the other.

I will probably pick it up again as it garnered rave reviews.

Moyasimon is definitely quirky.

From Wikipedia:

First year student at a agricultural college has the ability to see and communicate with bacteria and other micro-organisms.

Like many J dramas, there's a manga and a anime as well.

When you mix alcohol brewing, romance, bromance, a UFO club and a love potion that falls into the wrong hands,
outrageous situations that only the Japanese sense of humor could pull off.

And they all have heart and the humanistic value. These few jdramas I watched. The social issues are discussed quite fluently and arguably. I love it.

You could try Fuben na Benriya, which has the male lead from Okitegami Kyoto. It's not a romance though – more like an ensemble comedy with bromance (one young guy, two middle-aged/older guys).

If you want more quirky romance: Nodame Cantabile, Love Shuffle and Kimi wa Petto.

I like 37.5c no Namida quite a lot too (flaws and all). I don't think it really needed two suitors but fortunately Japanese dramas are happy to leave things open ended.

Thank you for the suggestions! Will look them up! Yes I agree that 37.5c need not have 2 suitors. But it was quite a sweet first love triangle for the girl. I quite like the end scene as well. My sister pointed out that I was very serious throughout watching it. So definitely not a comedy per se. It is memorable to me nonetheless. Flaws and all. Haha. That beard though! Haiz.

Did you finish Okitegami? I marathoned it non-stop (I had time. Hee) and I felt quite empty afterwards, sad that it had ended. It was very satisfying indeed. Mind games(or control?) issue was dealt chillingly. Definitely a great watch as it gave me all sorts of feelings in a good way. Can't wait for the sub of the ending to watch it again.

Continues to love Oh My Venus on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Enjoyed - Remembered but not obsessed about it yet. I can feel it will get better and better ;)

Totally dig "Because it's the First Time" - Love all the characters and I truly enjoy how the story unravels and the love stories brings back memories. It's beautifully filmed and their friendship is awesome!

Splash Splash Love - it's cute too. Love the leads!

Otona Joshi - Love this show and reminds me how complicated being a woman is. When you are beautiful, professional and can't find love like our female lead (Shinohara Ryoko) - what do you do? Luckily, you are surrounded by a group of good girlfriends. The guys in this show are not your typical male leads. I love the clothes and handbags she wears. Very professional and chic! The concept is nothing new but it just reminds me that women are our own worst enemies and we should be kind to each other.

Planning to try a couple more Japanese drama- Going to go for the cop/investigation ones. I guess it is my current mood. Started Siren - and probably give it another try later.

Have a great weekend beanies!

Jcw Mesmerizing Eyes ~

Some recent J cop dramas I enjoyed.

Yami no Bansosha Short at five episodes. Unusual duo solve murder mystery.

Kageri Yuku Natsu Also five episodes.

Both have dark elements and twists.

Just finished an older cop drama, Shinzanmono with Hiroshi Abe.

Standard ten episodes. Each suspect has their own back story. Not bad.

You may want to try Lucky Seven

Features Eita, Jun Matsumoto and Nanako Matsushima. They work for a detective agency, so they often bump heads with the police.

Long Goodbye

Based on the same-titled novel by Raymond Chandler, the drama is set in Tokyo, in the 50's. Also five episodes.

Siren is quite a good watch. I wasn't too fond of the female lead (not happy about her characterisation) and the final episode covered too much ground, plus one key element of the story very much requires suspension of disbelief (without spoiling anything – it gets a bit futuristic).

But the male lead is a great character and the twists and turns of the story do keep you on edge.

As John says, Lucky 7 is very watchable (the only thing that bogs it down is Eita's disappearance half-way through the drama – which, if I remember correctly, was due to his father dying).

Also:
SPEC (if you don't mind sci-fi elements – you get a fantastic case: Kase Ryo, Toda Erika and Kamiki Ryunosuke are all in this) – there are several seasons & films
Rondo (a romantic/mystery thriller, actually a Japanese/Korean co-production)
Okitegami Kyoko is a currently airing, quirky-comedy detective drama (several people have mentioned it on the OT today)

So...things have cooled back down again, drama-wise, at least for me. Maybe a good thing, since we have the holidays quickly approaching and a new puppy at home!

In fact, the only Korean drama I'm really following at this time is Oh My Venus. I dumped Glamorous Temptation last week because I couldn't stand the plot direction, but its one of those shows that I may pick up again later.

I mentioned in a post above some comments regarding Love Me if You Dare. Right now the plot has moved into the show's very dark phase, and the person translating the novel into English is roughly following the same pace as the show. And it is very dark indeed, although the show is somewhat tamer than the novel. I have a theory regarding the latest twist...it will be interesting to see if it pans out. I'm bummed that the Viki subs for this week have been slow!

On the TW-side, still loving Marry Me or Not, of course!

I was so into this, it's been a while since I was so immersed in a drama. It hit all my sweet spots with its good story, funny situations, pretty visuals and great, great leads. I mean seriously, how amazing Kim Seul Gi and Yoon Doo Joon are together? Chemistry is off charts and their bickering is the most adorable thing in the world. I want more! Happy OT!!

Speaking of dramas, well I only enjoy OH MY VENUS at the moment.. Well, I only watch it for So Ji Sub and Shin Min Ah anyway. But I also fond of other characters like Joon Sung and Ji Woong. Such a cutie pie. Our Daegu's Venus is really lucky with men.
I love that this drama is actually simple and I love it way more She Was Pretty, which is pretty great despite flimsy plot. I think the leads and characters definitely elevated the drama. But I love it so far. For once an OTP that behave like adults and talk like adults and not shy showing the skinship. It's like 60 minutes full of feel-good romance and skinships, but I like it! LOL. My standard must be getting more shallow these days. But who am I kidding, Kim Young Ho himself is pretty much every girl's fantasy prince charming and he's NOT chaebol jerk for once!

Also watch a bit of Remember and Imaginary Cat, for the sake of Yoo Seung Ho.

It's finally getting chilly enough here to feel like Christmas is on its way. It's been a bit mad - though nice. Everyone feels the need to meet up before Christmas, which is really nice, as the year has gone so quickly so it's an opportunity to catch up with folks. But it's also the time when reports, applications and taxes need to be done! So I'm trying to stay sane with a steady run of drama watching while I'm doing the more mindless stuff.

BUBBLEGUM
I saw it to its end. There were some really nice characters in this show, and the leads were very charming. But it was unfortunate, like chewing gum, it started with strong flavours and then after a while, I couldn't decide if I wanted to keep chewing or just chuck it out. I don't think the writing was strong enough to take us through the angst and bring us back in an interesting, meaningful way. Noble Idiocy prescribed as a cure? Never said any doctor.

REPLY 1988
I'm still wowed by the writing in this drama. All the characters are lovely, and the story lines of friendship, community, family, growing up have just continued to impress week after week.

SIX FLYING DRAGONS
I'm really enjoying this. It's a bit convoluted as there are so many characters (so many Bangs!) and historical references, but there's nice pace in each episode and the director's pretty good at setting up towards a reveal or turning point.

IMAGINARY CAT
The story is somewhat simplistic, so I have to admit, I only half listen to it. I just stare at the screen when the cat comes on.

OH MY VENUS
A bit like Imaginary Cat - I just look up when the two leads or the gym bunny-boys are on screen.

SPLISH SPLASH
I don't normally watch mini series like this but I'm a big fan of Kim Seul Gi's since Flower Boys Next Door. She's adorable, and the fantastical set up is fun. It was pretty funny the king's horror when she wolfed down a clementine, because yanno, they're meant to be precious!

HEALER
But all these year end polls and reviews had another unexpected effect - I ended up re-watching Healer. I watched the show belatedly (so wasn't part of the Dramabeans frenzy) and did love it. I think someone wrote recently about how, Healer had a lot of similar tropes to other dramas, so it was curious why it all came together so well. So I went back to re-watch it to see if I'd like it just as much. And I do!

I think I love it because it brings together a combination of elements that I really like:

- the narrative structure of 5 old friends who seemed to really like each other, in the height of their youth and full of life and potential, then something goes wrong terribly, and the mystery of what happened is intriguing, plays on nostalgia and loss, and also how sometimes by not speaking about pain and the tragic past, wrongs are left hidden.

- the narrative device that the wrongs done in the past, led to great suffering by the younger generation who then gets it together to "put things...

re: Splash Splash Love, one of my favourite bits was him telling her he couldn't run, because it wasn't kingly/dignified to do so.

I love how it gets played for comedy at first, when she's running away from him with the ball and he can only walk really fast after her, and then for swoon at the end when he finally runs to kick his Joseon football into the net and then runs like the wind to catch her before she disappears.

oh gosh, ouch, I typed a whole lot and it got eaten up...

- the narrative device that the wrongs done in the past, led to great suffering by the younger generation who then gets it together to “put things is immensely satisfying

- the combination of using journalism and an awakening of idealism and integrity, together with the underworld of hackers, couriers, to take down criminals is fun!

- the device of the OTP who were friends as children, suffered trauma from the same past and who eventually find and save each other, is incredibly corny, but here it's justified so well you can't imagine them with anyone else!

- really fantastic character designs and quirky details. Hacker Ahjumma with her frizzy hair, mismatched clothing, knitting and eating gimbap while doing mad super hacker stuff, the layer father who runs a cafe and has a following of loyal ex-cons, the eccentric, mysterious teacher with the funny speech pattern. And the details like dad and Young Shin dancing to old songs. But these are all explained well too, such as Dad singing to Young Shin when she was a child, so they don't feel too gimmicky.

- very fun character design of Healer and his Clark Kent alter ego - Healer is dressed like a motorcycle courier but sleeker with lots of ooh ahh technology, and his day look is posh and nerdy.

- a really good balance of fun, every day things like eating, singing, dancing, together with some hair-raising high impact adrenaline scenes, and highly devised romantic encounters. But all done very well via the directing and editing.

- I love the character of Moon Ho as an ambivalent mentor, rather than the typical second lead. He's played by such a fantastic actor. His speeches at the end of the broadcasts are so full of sincerity and gravitas, it makes you want to believe in good journalism!

- Even the character of Moon Shik is interesting - I keep watching the flashbacks and thinking - exactly when did it all start to go wrong for him? Although he made bad decisions, exactly when did the rot set in?

My only gripe is that the show places the OTP as older than they come across. To me, they seem more like 23 or 24, but I guess that doesn't work for the timeline.

The show never gets as intense as say, Pinocchio, in terms of saying something about journalistic integrity, or I Hear Your Voice in terms of revenge and trust, but it's very well put together as a solid package with lots of great, fun details.

Oh, I just had to get this out of my head, so thank goodness for open threads. Merry Christmas, y'all!

HEALER SPOILER

My gripe with the show is the incredibly simplistic and silly ending , the villain got arrested for a newly introduced crime , and we know that villain can get himself out the next day . it was like all those crimes and murders and misery that the leads had endured got forgotten . and that murderer secretary just.... nothing?? It was a fun drama , except for the last episode .

Was it a newly introduced crime? I thought they made reference to the video of the Russians quite early on. But I agree with you in that, they don't really pick up on that storyline till quite late, so there's not enough build up there.

The thing that is left open-ended is that even if the Elder goes down, there are still other farmers around, one of whom was speaking to the Elder on the phone. But perhaps that's the world Healer lives in - you can't eradicate all the evil folks at one shot. So neither the Healer's nor the journalists' work is done.

I think Splash Splash Love works precisely because it's a mini-drama. If it had 16 episodes, I don't think I could quite buy the King behaving as he does, but as a sweet, short drama that doesn't take itself too seriously, it's a fun watch.

And Kim Seul-gi... she's good. She's that kind of good that you don't learn with years of experience. When I was watching her ponder whether to step into the puddle – fighting her inner conflict about uni exams and wishing to disappear – it reminded me of someone saying yesterday that KDW is better than KWB because he's older and more experienced – but it's not an age thing. It's watching someone as young as Kim Seul-gi and with only some experience and seeing immense skill there already. She can absolutely carry a whole show already – probably could have from the moment she first stepped on a drama set.

Anyone who hasn't yet watched Splash Splash Love, needs to do it RIGHT NOW.

Yoon Doo-joon and Kim Seul-gi have this incredible and electrifying chemistry, and they're both killing it in their roles. And the drama knows when it's got a good thing going, because they do not skimp on the skinship. And it's hilarious but also incredibly sweet and touching - if this had come out two weeks ago, this couple should have made it into the end-of-year polls.

I'm down to watching the raw web drama version on Naver because I just can't get enough of it (why is it only 2 hours long, WHYYYYY. But on the flip side, it means we don't spend too much time on useless side plots and get only the good stuff i.e. OTP!

Hello, all:

Ah dramas!

Let's see.

It's a week with all kinds of stresses and bad luck for our heroes and I found myself avoiding certain dramas and steeling myself to see them

Dazzling Temptation: Ah gee! This is such a hard watch. I just... I just... I mean, Really???? This is one of those dramas which have taught me that certain people should learn to win at their own risk. The other is Six Flying Dragons where, happily, I don't mind the bad guys thinking they have won. Heck, I looked up the history and I will only say that people should just think twice about succeeding in getting some person on the throne. But back to Dazzling Temptation: I just couldn't watch it. I've been reading recaps. Or I'll just scream.

Six Flying Dragons: Seriously great show! I especially love the music scores. Gravitas galore! And I love how each new villain comes up to fill in the void left by another. And yes, folks scheming and counter-scheming and not realizing that by winning they are setting themselves up for a loss.

Remember: Ah me! This is a drama that I have to prepare myself to watch. I know I have to deal with horrendous injustice, evil lawmen, wealthy and powerful bad guys. But that all this is happening to a poor, mentally-disabled, good person...and that he will be in prison for 4 more years (as we were told in first epi) is hard for me to commit to. Mercifully, the hope that all will end well is giving me power to force myself to click "play."

Imaginary Cat: Gotta finish it up.

All about my mom: Ah gee! I didn't like the concussion plot. I don't like the sick mom plot. And I'm not really liking the man-craving young thief plot. Organic plotting, where are you? But I'll stick with it. Chae Ri, why did you blurt out your confession in front of everyone? Aigoo, what a mess!

Splish-Splash Love is such a fun ride. Joyful, giddy, with court intrigue.

Sweet Savage Family: I don't know where it goes each week and I love this. Actor who plays GiBum is showing his comedic skills. So good to see him do this after all those villains.

5-9: Please, I do not want any noble idiocy. Writers, you are warned.

I saw this on simon and martina and it just upset me so much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17KCGxU8wGE

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

yeah, it's hardly the first drama to be pre-filmed. Descendants of the Sun was already doing that, but it'll only make a difference if they dramas are successful.

And cable dramas do complete filming ahead of their air dates, I remember plenty of tvN dramas - Misaeng, the Flower Boys series, I think even Answer Me 1997 - all had wrap parties days before the finale aired. They still slog, but at least the scripts aren't totally dependent on the audience.

Quality degradation: After 4-5 episodes. Yep, absolutely. Way too common.

Character development: Sorely lacking in K drama scripts which is bizarre when you take into consideration how many episodes a typical K drama has. Most are at least 16 episodes if not more.

Perhaps they need to cut the number of episodes ? Quality over quantity ! Fighting !

Many J dramas are 10 episodes and their stories seem to flow much smoother than their K counterparts.

I think J-dramas have the advantage that a) are nearly always pre-produced and b) they are not 100% stuck on that there must be only certain couples by the end or even that there must be couples.

Certainly a) makes a huge difference in terms of story flow and b) can sometimes mean that endings don't feel nearly as forced/contrived/too fast happy-ever-after.

I second this. Also with a lot of jdrama stories, the romance takes second lead (pardon the pun) to the main story, the entire thing feels a bit more organic. Like if you have a crime or cops drama, there doesn't need to be a love line within that setting (not saying all kdrama's do, but there is a lot more love around). Sure there are times where it appear. But it doesn't feel like the love lines take over the drama in the same way that some kdrama's do.

If you have a male and female lead, that doesn't necessarily mean that that they HAVE to be a couple. Nor that they will be the couple.

Have you seen The Village: Achiara's Secret ?

** Potential spoiler if one hasn't watched it. **

I found it refreshing that there wasn't a romance for Moon Geun-Young's character. There was a cute cop that had a bit of a crush on her but it didn't needlessly interfere with the story.

It seemed Jdrama like in that aspect.

0

John:

Not had time to watch it yet, though that's good to know!

0

How very true, the theme of many jdramas are centred around social issues without any trace of romance between the leads. I'm watching Genkai Shuraku Kabushiki Kaisha, it is about the revival of a declining village with aging population. It is entertaining in a very Japanese "ganbatte" kind of way. I watched it because of Takashi Sorimachi, the drama turned out quite refreshing in contrast to the mushy romantic kdrama I've been watching. Btw, those of you who are ardent fans of Sassy Go Go (@pogo, yea, that's you :) ! ) may want to give GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka a try. Takashi Sorimachi is the GTO in the 1998 series, he was awesome! There is a recent 2014 series too.

Coming back to the difference between jdrama and kdrama, I think it could be due to their inherent cultural traits. I hope I'm not generalising, my own observation is Koreans are more outwardly expressive, whereas Japanese are more subtle with lots of social cues and body language. This may explain why the men in kdramas can openly talk about love and their feelings but it is not that acceptable for their Japanese counterpart to do so. Anyway, I read somewhere that the target audience of kdramas are women, so that is the reason why kdrama writers tend to focus a lot more on sentimental feelings and romance.

0

I dropped Oh My Venus after the third episode I think and it left me wondering how jdrama writers will handle the weight/beauty issue. I am not saying all kdramas have bad writing. Far from that.

And on a very superficial note, I love the look of some tanned actors/actresses. They are scattered all over in one drama. They look gorgeous.

Tanned actors and actresses in jdrama I mean.

0

Mokomichi Hayami is always very tanned. I think that's his natural complexion. With others, they don't slap on as much whitening make-up as in Korean dramas. You even get grey hairs (see Eita in Wakamono Tachi).

0

Also: not sure Japanese drama writers would handle weight/ beauty issue any better! Can't really think of a drama that tackled this sort of topic...

0

I don't see why it's so hard to change the way stuff operate. Make the dramas a season before! Give rest and time to people...and to hell with what the public wants in their storytelling.

But one of JWI's funniest comedic role was in "Coffee House."

A less talented comedic actor would have simply made his role as the "annoying" suitor nothing but annoying, but JWI really made his character in CH a hilarious one.

On one level, the irony is pretty hilarious in that it does say something about the highly sexualised (even when dressed in knowingly demure clothing) representations of women in these pop girl troupes. Plus it might hit a bit close to home considering the rumours of younger girls in the entertainment industry being pressured into giving sexual favours to businessmen?

On the other a more feminist perspective, and one looking at cross-cultural relations - it's a bit demeaning for a border agency to simply assume prostitution, because women are sexualised. What if they were just a group of self-loving women on holiday? And it seems a little hypocritical, no, considering America's ready export of highly sexualised media to the rest of the world.

@Carole - google tells me apparently the problem started because whichever incompetent buffoon from their agency was accompanying them, told the officers that the girls were 'sisters'. And they were on tourist visas, not the work/entertainer visas they should have had if they were there for work-related stuff.

I can see how that, combined with the extreme youth of the girls and the sexualised outfits in their luggage, might ring alarm bells. Their agency is idiotic.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah I read that as well. Sourced from an employee at the immigration office. They had the wrong visa, and the 15 hour wait was because that was when the next plane back to Korea with the original flight company was scheduled (because apparently policy is to return with the same company, and not necesseraly the first flight).

So the wrong visa was a main factor, combined with bad explanation, and as pogo said potential "questionable" outfits. The agency spread it as a "prostitution" accusation though, potentially to create media play and attention towards the group. Which, really is a bit stupid of them.

0

To be honest, border agents in the UK and US and some parts of Europe, have been detaining a whole lot of people, and not just for "prostitution". There have been academics, musicians and artists (some quite famous too) turned away for basically being the wrong colour, having the wrong passport, and in some cases, because they think they might do something illegal, rather than any proof that any illegal doing is being done. So this case is not really unusual, it's just the salacious aspect of prostitution and that they're a girl band that makes the details pop.

Someone I know, who happened to carry a name badge from 7 years previously, was stopped at the UK border because they thought she was trying to get work (because of this outdated name badge that show she volunteered at a festival years ago). She was held and move around for over 24 hours, then deported.

The TSA, (Transportation Security Administration), part of the hopelessly bureaucratic U.S. Department of Homeland Security is chock full of perverts and thieves.

Our local airport, not that large as far as USA airports go, (ranked 66th in terms of passengers served), has had several TSA workers arrested for stealing stuff from passengers. Jewelry, electronics, cash, you name it. They help themselves to your valuables.

As per Wikipedia, " approximately 500 TSA agents have been fired or suspended for stealing from passenger luggage since the agency's creation in November 2001."

You figure these are only the ones that have been caught.

Reply 1988. Three issues I have with this show:
* The scene writing dropped from "stellar" to only "vastly superior"

I agree about 1988 - the quality's dropped quite a bit in the last few episodes, though I still think the parents' stories are vastly superior to the teenage ones (the true heroine of 1988 to me isn't Deok-sun, it's Sun-woo's mom - I hope she gets that second son!).

And I agree that the recap being out wayyyy before the subtitles, basically kills all chance for discussion, for those of us who need the subs. Though going by the way some fans have been behaving in the threads, I think we're better off staying out. I'm not in the mood to be lectured by people who hate both the other Answer Me shows and hate everyone in this drama apart from the heroine.

That is true. They have some real gems there in the parent generation, both in terms of character design and acting. And they still give them a lot of room in the show, which comes with its backdraws, of course:

The "side-plots" and side character depths are way to much for a 20 episode show, resulting in these monstrous feature film length episodes.

The main lead characters are rather weakly drawn: Deok-sun is left very uncontoured (on purpose for better relatability), Jung-hwan is one of the most archetypical characters on the show. (Taek is another archetype, but at least he gets some meat and depth). That alone is not a problem in a romantic comedy, of course.

But now you have all those fantastic supporting characters, who have much, much more profile, depth, complexity than your lead couple. This is a problem, because complex characters need a lot of care.

The show tries this with Sung Bo-ra, for example, who gets a huge amount of screen-time for a character who is irrelevant to the main plot lines (and most of the supporting ones). And yet she still doesn't get enough screen time to make her "work", I think. I think I get the character, because she reminds me so much of my older sister (I love you, Kaxia!), but for a viewer who has less experience with this kind of character (who is also non-existent in K-dramaland), I'm not sure whether Bo-ra makes any sense to them.

It's a bit less critical with other side-characters like Sung Dong-Il or Ra Mi-ran. Their complexity doesn't create as much contrast as they are adults; and they are much more approachable for a K-drama audience.

I'm still wishing for an explanation about those characters.:) I don't get why BoRa is so violent and abusive towards her sister and why the family supported that behavior. I don't understand why JH's mom treats her husband so poorly or why he was just goofy all the time. I don't understand why DS's parents bicker in such a repetitive and silly way or why the wives are so vulgar in their jokes towards Dong Il. I'm still on ep 4 so maybe it's going to come and they are just going in circles sometimes because they have so much time.

The irony of calling 1997 'teenage crap' while rhapsodising about the far crappier teenage romance storylines in 1988 seems to be quite lost on some people (Deok-sun has pretty much been led by the nose into a crush on Jung-hwan, thanks to her friends insisting he likes her - and as a result, it doesn't have even a quarter of the impact of 1997, where the leads were each other's best and closest friends AND Shi-won managed to register Yoon-jae as a man on her own. And as you said, she's pretty much undefined).

In some ways, 1988 seems to be harking back to 1997 quite a bit - Jung-hwan is the 1988 version of Yoon-jae, and we've already had two spins on the 1997 scene where Shi-won is followed home by a stalker (only in this case, the twist is that both times, it's just Jung-hwan/Taek). Not to mention the romantic red herring of Sun-woo, just like Joon-hee in 1997 (I think I've mentioned this before). But where Yoon-jae felt like a person, Jung-hwan ends up feeling as you said - like an archetype. I quite enjoy Taek, but that may be largely because of Park Bo-geum - I don't know how I'd feel about him on paper.

"And I agree that the recap being out wayyyy before the subtitles, basically kills all chance for discussion, for those of us who need the subs. "

This is such an interesting observation. I was thinking the sites like Viki, DramaFever and Dramacool etc are distributing international tv shows and other content with greater reach than ever before (we used to get some terrestrial broadcasts but ever so limited.) But it's another development that there are viewers, like myself too, who'd watch a show when the subs are not up, just because...I don' know...impatience...or that i think that I can get enough meaning out of watching the interactions anyway without the translation.

So there's a gap of understanding that's filled in with the recaps (in which the motivations are also interpreted by the recapped), reading the comments on forums, and then finally re-watching the episode when the subs are up.

It's a far more layered viewing experience than I'd ever would have expected.

Hi Carole, yes, 6FD is on the list. But I have to mention that, in general, I don't get sageuk dramas. I struggle with the character and relationship design in them, with the canned plots, and I cannot adjust to the style of them, in terms of camera use, sets and acting.

I might not be able to concentrate on the actual drama while either trying to suppress my anti-sageuk instincts or being overwhelmed by them. Don't expect too much from me.

I'd love to know more about what you mean about OMV's immaturity. :) I love the leads and I'm really bored by this show but the word immaturity wasn't really something that I thought about. I was mostly considering it to be about the good and old kdrama crazy logic and plot.

I'm trying Reply 88 but after being impressed by a lovely first episode I have to confess I was bored by the second and third ep. The fourth redeemed it a little but still I just can't understand why people really like this so much. The episodes are so long and yet the characters don't get developed, so many of the same scenes over and over again. I really hate that sheep.

I think once the leads get into a relationship, they are behaving like real adults which everyone is praising at the moment (since we do not normally see this in kdramas).

But I sort of get what Jon G. means on the basis of the first few episodes. The way the leads were talking in the airplane for example, I thought was odd – we had two strangers – one a medical professional and the other a patient – instantly bickering? It was for the sake of some comedy, but well... And if we go beyond their interaction, there were immature jokes. Remember that scene on the airplane when two super-fit guys couldn't lift Joo-eun who never was that big to begin with? Pretty immature sort of joke that wasn't remotely funny.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, the way he behaves on the plane was awful and not consistent with his character at all, I remember writing about it somewhere else, but he turned around on the second episode. The fat jokes were indeed silly.

I understand why everyone is liking their almost normal relationship now too, it's funny but I find myself reacting very coldly to them, it must be because I don't understand their characters very much. She's oddly vain though I know the show is pushing to show her as confident and I do love the fact that she didn't loose her self worth or beliefs just because she got fat. I don't understand the main conflict about the scandal or the secondary characters either, that helps explaining too.

To be honest, I just see it as inconsistent characterisation/mediocre writing. There are certain things they are *supposed* to be, but that, depending which episode you look at, they really aren't. Or where there are holes in the story if you try to fill in the background of 20-25 years (in Young-ho's case). E.g. I still think Young-ho is a Korean chaebol, not a Korean-American with a mega-rich family that he barely had any contact with – his emotional struggle makes sense, but his loyalty to them, to the point that he'll take on a job he doesn't want at all, really does not. I mean, if he saw his grandma and father every summer/Christmas and exchanged letters/emails or skyped with them, I could buy into it but that's not what supposedly happened in the last 20-25 years.

Joo-eun is indeed a mix between oddly vain and self-confident. I do love she never lost her self-worth but there were definitely several more scenes where I didn't understand why she didn't just challenge people who were telling her she was ugly b/c she was fat or that she had only 'lost' things in her life by becoming a (fat) lawyer.

I also find it a bit odd her weight loss has been so smooth & easy (seems like it's all 'resolved' now)... but having a sibling with the same medical issue... well, it's not all that easy.

0

Yes, I agree on pretty much everything. I just assume they don't know how to deal with his past in America so it's like it never existed.

The weight loss had no more use in the story really, it's not realistic but almost nothing in this show is so I didn't expect this to be different.

I do still love the leads, this show is what Warm & Cozy was for many here, the actors make me come back though the story bores me.

0

I’d love to know more about what you mean about OMV’s immaturity. I love the leads and I’m really bored by this show but the word immaturity wasn’t really something that I thought about. I was mostly considering it to be about the good and old kdrama crazy logic and plot.

Oh, yeah, sorry. I wasn't referring to the lead characters primarily when I said "immaturity". They are very immature for people well in their 30s (especially Young-ho with his constant preadolescent antics), but so are all other K-drama leads.

No, I meant the drama as a whole, for instance the very inconsequential character and plot writing. As an example, the show starts with the heavy blow of Joo-eun's relationship of 15 years being broken to pieces. This seems to be instantly forgotten and is never followed up emotionally.

In many instances, the show tries to create some kind of tension or drive from bringing in concepts like this, but it forgets that (a) this stuff are mostly overused cliches who are not nearly as original as they are meant to be and (b) they are never really followed up with anything to earth them into the show as a whole.

This kind of "theme-park" mentality is something that many very young and inexperienced writers display. Maybe that's why I used the term "immaturity". This can be very charming of course, especially when it's done with a certain juvenile enthusiasm and creativity; or when it is used for great comedic effect.

I agree with you totally. OMV has been a great disappointment considering that I was enthusiastically waiting for it with lots of anticipation before it started as I like both SJS and SMA.

The skinship and suggestive conversation between the two felt unnecessarily raunchy to the extent of off-putting. I could sense the "immaturity" too, SJS feels like an over-aged chaebol son dealing with teenage angst when he should already be in his mid-thirties.

This drama seems to be going blindly by the formula in putting together all the tropes and clichés that worked well in the past for kdrama. Like her self-talk in the drama, SMA is definitely going to turn out being a "candy-cum-cinderella' albeit a smart career woman version of it, with a green-eyed 'step-sister' (Soo-jin) waiting on the sidelines ready to pounce on every opportunity to cause harm. Also, I don't find the desperately clingy celebrity girl who hooks herself onto Sung Hoon cute at all, I don't know what the intent of the writer was in inserting such a character in the drama. Everything just feels so boring!

Deok Sun got swallowed up by everything else. She doesn't feel like the focal point of the drama anymore but just a piece of the slice of life story about a neighborhood. I have not become as invested with her love-line as I thought I would. I liked the Sun Woo - Bo Ra development more.

I'm not sure she ever was the focal point. She was central in the relational networks, but that was more of a job of putting other characters into the spotlight.

The issue with that is, I think, the expectations of the audience. They have to keep the "romantic comedy" target group engaged while actually producing a slice-of-life masterpiece.

I liked the Sun Woo – Bo Ra development more.

Quite a contrast, isn't it?
Still, it's not easy to handle this appropriately. Both characters are the opposite of lead characters in a romantic comedy setting, they and their relationship still need a lot of care from the show-runners but will not do much for the majority of the audience.

Yes, I agree with this. On one hand, that target group's obsession with shipping drives frenzied discussion, which is seen to help increase their market reach and up the ratings. However, I think that's not the focus of the drama at all, and because the writers diverge from that romantic development, the viewers are frustrated and start blaming the characters.

and btw I find I am being pushed into that bad manager position - they say Mentor, but in reality what they want is a spy, I said no can do. I am not going to tell on others and give them evaluations. I really don´t like where this is going, or maybe Awl has turned me too paranoid about those workplace matters.

of course Reply 1988 is cute and all, but I agree with some who say the characters don´t get developed individually enough. Except Taek. But others are pretty much the same. and the future part is too fragmented

speaking of past-present-future, I think there is not any drama set in the future? I would like to see one.

what do you imagine dramas in the future, say 25 years, will be like?

Hi Everyone and a Happy Weekend (the last but 1 of the Year!)

With the DB Awards and reviews coming out for full length (ie each episode being at least 1-hour long) shows that have been recapped here, I was thinking, how about we have our own list of shows that did not make it to the DB recaps and were shorter, and were aired in the last few years? The majority of them were web dramas with at least one that was a made for TV drama, but that does not mean that they cannot be rated against each other at least.

One thing that they seem to have in common is very little plot, so I can only rate the stories on whether they were coherent and consistent or not.

Truthfully, I watched only a few and some of them I could not bring myself to finish, so I can only give a very short list of 5??? I'm sure many of you can do better!

*** SPOILERS ***

Midnight Diner (not a web drama) - Half-hour episodes of different slice-of-life stories of different people who eat at a diner. Most of the stories were interesting and even compelling. All had the heart-warming factor in various degrees and ended satisfyingly, and with what looked like a curtain call of actors appearing on stage as they bid goodbye to the diner's owner. I give this show 5 stars.

EXO Next Door (web drama) - The best of the web-dramas that I watched. So thank you dear Beanies ie those of you who recommended that I watch this. It had the most coherence story-wise, among the web-dramas. However sadly it still insisted on having the male lead acting like a jerk, when he could have been very nice as he was at the end, and a female lead who was 'not smart'. It also had the love triangle trope with D. O. as the 2nd lead and being the real highlight of the show. Verdict: 3.5 stars ... At least it was a pleasant watch with just a little of the frustration factor. Watch if you like EXO

Noble, My Love (web drama) - This one did not have any idols in it, but that did not exactly make it better. There were quite a few superfluous characters like the younger brothers and the frenemy. Sung Hoon who plays the lead is sweet in Oh My Venus, but a control-freak chaebol boyfriend -wannabe in Noble. He may have helped the female lead but I found why he did it manipulative. So the title is a misnomer ... there was nothing genuinely noble about him or them. Another sadly overused trope was that lead girl starts off full of agency but somehow ends up 'losing' or giving in to male lead and then not continuing her dream of maintaining a veterinary surgery. Quite disappointing. Also, male lead was quite a jerk too and mostly immature which made the couple-together times hard to watch. Verdict: 2 stars... watch only if you like Sung Hoon. He does look good in this show.

Dream Knights (web drama) - This one I could not watch in full... after a couple of episodes I felt it was a waste of time. Just fluff and another 'not smart' female lead. At least they got some members of JYP to dance in the...

I was surprised that I enjoyed EXO next door. I hated the first episode, but the drama grew better (besides the fact that D.O totally out acted everyone and should have been the lead. Though then we wouldn't have felt heartbroken over the second lead as much I suppose. And the "not smart" female lead) I do wish they had done more with the first love though (god knows I never thought I'd say THAT!)

@ Manin

Yes, I did enjoy it too, because the story actually made sense. It was consistent enough although Chan Yeol (who's so sweet in Roommate and such a jerk in this show) was unfortunately given the lead and had to change from being mean to being nice and it was kind of jarring. He should have been just teasing and difficult and not so much of a jerk to begin with.

I too feel that D. O. would have made the better lead. I'm glad to read that he's been given more lead roles in movies but we don't get to watch them all that soon.

Completely agree about the story line. It was simple and straight forward, but they stuck to it. Nothing felt forced. I do think we'd have a natural transition with D.O as the lead, in regards to the transition of mean to nice. But I also thought Chanyeol did his best. Although you could see "acting in process" on his face, I've seen worse performances.

And somehow the over the top ridicilousness of the Sehun/little brother scenes were some of the funniest in the drama.

... in the contest or rather members of Got7 (I think??) so at least the dancing was not a total waste. I don't know what the lead girl was doing in that dance, she basically just stood around.

Does anyone know if Song Ha Yoon is better in other shows? I've only seen her in Sweden Laundry and in Dream Knights and she appears about the same in both ... not too inspiring.

Once again I cannot give a fair verdict but I'm tending towards.... don't bother watching... :)

*** SPOILER ***

This web drama was somewhat intriguing with T.O.P. and Ueno Juri doing a great PPL for LINE as they communicated with instant message translation. There was actually no proper story, only the question of whether they would ever cross paths after all the messaging they did. I'd give this 4 stars for nice visuals and for being an easy, non-frustrating watch.

@GB - if you're looking for web dramas, try Be Arrogant, a.k.a. Dodohara (starring Shin So-yool and Yura). It's a sweet little story that's really all about the relationship between two girls who start off as romantic rivals but become friends. And even a bit feminist, in its own way.

The acting's way better than in Exo Next Door (which I also enjoyed even though I recognised it as dumb fluff with a very questioable lead).

I have been watching suggestions and recommendations and am quite pleased that they are not as bad as they could be LOL!

I just watched 'Love Detective Sherlock K.' and that was surprisingly better than most with a difference and a twist and refreshingly not glued to only a romance for plot. Of course as all these web dramas go, it did not have all that much plot, but at least what little it had was different. :)

I'll try 'Be Arrogant' too!

Hello everyone!
Pretty bored on the drama front. Reading R88 recaps and will marathon it later. That's about it!
On variety front, keeping up with Running Man (even though it has been dragging lately, but the zombie episode was not bad) and Law of the Jungle (they finally subbed Seo In Guk's episodes).
On k-pop front, love love love BTS.(ARMYs fighting!) Have been watching all their latest performances, variety shows and clips. And loving their new album. (My theory of the I Need You + Prologue + Run music video is Jin is the one who is dead and the other kids are falling apart missing him.)
That's all from me!

Reply88 would be great if it was alil shorter and out normally..cuz I just end up reading the recaps and not watching..although I did watch the last two eps..and they were pretty damn good..tho i did ffwd a bit.
Riders:Catch tomorrow (something like that) is ok..
Otona Joshi..meh. I like her but something just feels off.
Marry Me or Not..I do like this one..
Bubblegum..I gave up..I'll read the final recap when it comes out.
For some reason thinking about all of these just makes me tired..lol idk whats wrong with me.aha

Splash Splash Love tho is absolutely blowing me away. I literally had to pause it because I was laughing so damn hard. I've already watched ep 1 twice..hehe. I've decided to think of it as a tv movie split into 2 parts other wise I get greedy and annoyed that it is only two parts..lol Kim Seulgi and Yoon Doojoon.. <3

Hi all!

I am just going crazy over Splash Splash Love. Such a good first episode. Kim Seul Gi and Doo Joon lit my screen on fire. lol I watched the first episode on Viki and had to hunt down the other ones on Naver because I just couldn't wait.

I am one of those people who just laugh on the inside when something is funny but this drama had me cracking up and literally laughing out loud. The scene with the triangle kimbap, the after effects of eating instant doukbokki and Dan Bi putting her mom's obsession with historical dramas to good use really put me over the edge. lol

If this was a movie, I would put it up there with My Sassy Girl. Perfect OTP Chemistry, it brought in the funny, it has a bit of intrigue, great OST, it gives you a bit of heartache towards the end and then top it off with some nice skinship.

Have a nice weekend!

Extending it too much means more political machinations by grumpy old men and I don't really want that. lol Also, this mini drama has some notable Old School actors in it. The philandering dad from Marriage Not Dating, the evil secretary from Healer and even Shin Soon Ae's dad from Oh My Ghostess is in this mini drama.

oh that's right, I forgot, while working on a rather tedious report, I started watching Scholar Who Walks the Night too. I think I'm up to the penultimate two episodes.

As I'm only a recent Kdrama watcher, I guess I'm doing my homework and catching up on previous titles that folks refer to when making comparisons.

It's the first Lee Jun Ki show I've watched. He's much bigger and taller than I expected - for some reason, just from his photos, I've always thought of him as a cute, wee little thing.

The bookseller thing is pretty fun, as a bibliophile, I liked that the female character is a storyteller.

One other thing though, is that the more I watch K dramas, the more certain repeated tropes becomes obvious. So in Scholar, the lead gets presented with a pair of shoes as a romantic gesture. In the same week, I watched Bang Won buy Boon Yi some shoes, and was reminded about Si Yeul 's thing about Ri Wan putting shoes on her. And then I remembered, there's even the shoes thing in Boys Over Flowers, and a little scene in Flower Boys Next Door, where a character puts some shoes in front of a girl, who'd run out in the cold with slippers. I guess there was nothing original about this device anyway (hello, Cinderella) but now that I've seen it so many shows, I really don't want to see it again!

Good observation! The shoe wearing trope has been around for ages since the time of Winter Sonata. In it Jun Sang (BYJ) helped Yoo-Jin (CJW) wear school shoes while she sat on the wall fence. That was the first shoe wearing scene I watched, followed by many countless others later on.

If you want to see Lee Jun-ki in a sageuk, you should try Arang & the Magistrate - it's a far better show than Night Scholar. Or in The King & the Clown, if you're open to movies. That was the project that launched him to stardom/won him respect as an actor and not just a pretty face, and for good reason imo.

LOVING:
Marry Me or Not?
Six Flying Dragons
Splish Splash Love (SO MANY FEEEELS!!!)
Love Me If You Dare

Thoroughly enjoying:
Imaginary Cat
I Have A Lover

I also just started rewatching City Hall and I forgot how great the drama is. It's very underrated and it's most likely because it's orientated around politics and is more lowkey. It also made me realize how much I INTENSELY MISS Cha Seung Won and Kim Sun Ah in a good drama!!!

For me, You're All Surrounded was just mediocre and I feel like it wasted CSW. I could never really get into KSA's last drama either. It just seemed bland and she didn't really have much chemistry with JSW which stunned me. I love them both and was really looking forward to seeing them work together.

Rewatching 49 Days, and now that I'm visiting family in CO for Christmas, my brother and I are finishing Faith which we started in Sept. (on ep 18 - there are 24, quite long).

Survival Audition Kpop Season 5 is underway, lots of talent as usual, definitely more females than males by a long shot.

What happened to Happy Together? Abandoning the sauna and Misun has proven itself over to be bad omissions.

Hi @owl

I read your recap of Bubblegum Ep 14. It was the episode I missed and you pretty much gave me the quick lowdown on it. Thanks!

I really like that peace-making with self scene you described. It's so true. We really ought to do that for ourselves often, with most of our faculties in tact, rather than to wait for the time our memories and selves are at risk.

It was a very pleasant show, competently produced and sure of itself. Pity it left some interesting side characters hanging, but at least for the leads, it resolved enough to satisfy us viewers while at the same time it left enough open-ended, the way real life is.

"the way real life is" -I think in the end that's what I liked about Bubblegum. It was a simple story, really, where the characters worked through relationship disappointments and joys, and they fixed some things while other issues were left "as is." Sometimes I get wrapped up in wanting a kdrama to be bigger than life, but I realized that doesn't always have to be for me to still enjoy the story.

I have to go see what's taking its lace now!

Happy Friday, OT!

Soooo not ready for the holidays! Caught something from one of my patients, am now trying to recover in time to get some holiday prep done. Thank goodness for Kdrama, taking my mind off what seems to be an 8-year run of bad luck. Hoping 2016 is better for everyone!

I must be the only one who doesn't mind the length of the AM1988 episodes. It seems like the time just flies by; but I have always been partial to the slice-of-life genre. Saw the relationship between Sun Woo's mom and Taek's dad coming since the second episode, and I like it!

I'm still watching OMV, but have to admit it's just because I want to look at So Ji Sub. The writing - meh.

Finished Bubblegum, though I'm not sure why. It did portray the anguish of families affected by Alzheimer's disease, but the show felt uneven, and I never really felt chemistry between the leads. I don't think I'm a LDW fan.

For throwback viewing, I occasionally have been watching Bachelors Vegetable Store. Cute, but Ga-on's mother is a total evil soap opera character; Reminds me of characters I used to see on Days of Our Lives (an US soap opera) when I watched back in the 1980's. Some themes never change, and must be universal across cultures.

Thanks for the recommendations for Splish Splash. I am definitely a fan of JDJ and KSG, and look forward to it.

Reply 1998: I don't mind the log episodes. It helps me to treat the show differently, making that much time in a stretch.

Bubblegum: Dropped and went back, skimming, just to finish. So little was satisfying about it.

OMV: I like the characters so much, and the underlying seriousness of them. So Ji Sub's character is taking part in various games or scenarios but underneath he has a strong compass and sense of what's important, the way Shin Mi Na's character does too. So they meet on a really grounded plane, without losing playfulness. I like that a lot. She is a relatable character for me and aside from stalkers and gorgeous man-children around, her struggles feel close to mine.

Six Flying Dragons: This is the ride I look forward to all week. I love the music, and also the musical writing with its many peaks and valleys. I'm surprised by how clear it is at this point in the story, when at first it was very hard for me to keep everyone's plights straight. Impressive.

Starting this other thread with two preambles:

- this is an Open Thread, yes? And it's the only one till next Friday? So, please forgive extended rambling, as it seems the only probable outlet till then.

- Ji Chang Wook fans, please don't kill me. Thank you.

So, yes, upon finishing my Healer revisit, I got curious and followed the Ji Chang Wook train of thought into checking out Warrior Baek Dong Soo. I'm about 10 episodes in and I'm struggling with this on several levels. Yoo Seung Ho's character is much more charismatic - I guess, the silent, dark, broody guy is always seen as more interesting than the buffoon.

But the thing that is slightly spooking me out - is JCW's face. The difference between his face in Warrior and Healer - is such that you can still see some resemblance, but at the same time, it's clearly different. The contours are different, and so, the overall demeanour of the actor is different.

And for Park Bong Soo, he utilises some of his natural dorky gestures he also used in Warrior. This connection of similarity is extra strange, considering the faces are different, and then there's the device that PBS is supposedly the alter ego of the main character of Healer (though JCW has said he's more like PBS in real life.)

It's like looking at an image, and suddenly seeing the Etch-a-sketch outlines of a previous drawing, or like seeing the X-ray behind the canvas sketches of Da Vinci, where it clearly shows he has changed something.

This is not knocking any actor's or person's choice to have plastic surgery. Your face, your money, your choice.

But it's a really strange viewing experience - I guess the screen makes us so intimately familiar with an actor's visage. In a way, it'd be less strange, if the changes were much more profound, but these subtle changes create an uncanny feeling of some other dimension, especially when the "latest" face is so eerily, impossibly perfect.

He just had a nose job, it's not that deep.

If that's what it is, that wee nose job changed the contours of his face by quite a bit!

I think Splish Splash Love is my favorite show of the year. I can't believe it! As much as I wish there were more episodes it truly is perfect as is. Squeeeeeeeeeee!
