Bubblegum: Episode 8
by Saya
Ri-hwan lays his cards on the table about Haeng-ah, but good intentions are never enough, especially when his mom is driven by the fear of not just losing him, but losing herself. Keeping her secret becomes increasingly harder, and everyone around her struggles with the consequences of her prognosis. It’s a pretty uncheerful hour, and yet, as always, Bubblegum stays somehow light despite it all.
EPISODE 8 RECAP: “Don’t Mind The Stains, Don’t Mind The Scars. Just Don’t Disappear”
Ri-hwan sees two pairs of shoes outside his mother’s place. Haeng-ah scrambles into the bathroom as soon as she hears his voice, and overhears their conversation.
Ri-hwan doesn’t understand why Mom’s chasing Yi-seul, and tells her that he’s seeing Haeng-ah. He’s the one who held onto her, and says Haeng-ah’s not to blame for what happened between Mom and her dad. When he’s with Haeng-ah, he’s insanely happy. Mom is unmoved, and he tells her how Haeng-ah never resented her once, even after hearing that Mom would throw her away. In the bathroom, Haeng-ah sinks to the floor, tears rolling, and Mom still flatly objects.
He goes on that he never wanted the affluent world that she came from, “For me, it’s enough to just have you by my side.” Both of them are overcome with emotion, and he tells her again not to oppose them. Mom’s past hurts aren’t Haeng-ah’s fault, and he wants her word that she won’t treat Haeng-ah that way. She rejoins that even if Haeng-ah were right here, her answer would be the same: no.
Once Ri-hwan’s gone, Mom calls Haeng-ah out of hiding. She reveals that she has early onset familial Alzheimer’s — a hereditary condition that there’s a fifty percent chance of Ri-hwan developing. Should it happen that he does, he’ll need a lot of people to take care of him, who won’t throw him away even if they want to — family. But if Haeng-ah were to become his family, his family would consist of exactly one other person. She demands her understanding.
Eyes flowing, Haeng-ah tries to hug her but Mom resists, and refuses to let her stay the night.
Driving by in pouring rain, Suk-joon spies Haeng-ah drifting along. He comes to a stop and sees her distressed face. She sinks to the pavement, and he runs out to catch her. She says she’s okay, but her head drops onto his chest and she faints.
In her own bed, she opens her eyes to daylight and Ri-hwan, who tells her to sleep some more. We rewind a little, and it’s Suk-joon by her side as she sleeps. Her phone vibrates and Suk-joon takes it out. We see the name Ri-hwan saved himself as: “Oppa who loves Haeng-ah.”
Meanwhile, Ri-hwan and Ji-hoon clean up a dead pigeon in front of the house. Their funeral blessings are interrupted, and Ri-hwan is dismayed to hear Suk-joon’s voice from Haeng-ah’s number. He drives away immediately, and foreboding hangs heavy in the air.
At her house, Ri-hwan asks Suk-joon what happened, and he replies that that’s what he’d like to know, when she was fine that afternoon. What did he do that made her faint in the street? His words hit home.
In the bedroom, Haeng-ah stirs. Suk-joon says he’s now in a position where he won’t keep her waiting anymore, and if she’s unhappy with Ri-hwan, there’s no reason for him to let her go. He makes it clear that he only called him because he’s a doctor, since she can’t go to hospital.
He lets himself out. Ri-hwan tries to find out from Tae-hee if Haeng-ah had met anyone that night. He admits she fainted in the street and Tae-hee reams him — only one person who could make her that way. He shouldn’t have started with Haeng-ah if he couldn’t protect her from his mother. Ri-hwan remembers the two pairs of shoes, and we see a flicker of reaction to the sound of Haeng-ah, in hiding, hitting the floor.
He stares at the stain from the dead pigeon on his jacket, and thinks, “A dark omen is more frightening than an immediate horror.” He nurses Haeng-ah with cold compresses, and his thoughts continue that the one person who would understand that fear is the one he must hide it from. He touches her cheek, and tells her not to be lonely, even in sleep.
She wakes to his face, and sits up. Ri-hwan tells her she had an irregular pulse but he insists she’s fine, and apologizes — she starts to spin a story about skipping meals and getting carsick, when he grips her arm. He says sorry, and she asks why. “Just. Everything,” he replies, unable to look at her.
In voiceover, we hear him thinking that it’s worse when someone can’t say they’re in pain, and not be able to do more than tell that person not to be in pain. He feels here forehead, and she smiles because he can see she’s fine, right?
He laments at her birthday being like this, which reminds her. Still smiling, she says she has to go to work and receive her birthday wishes, since Se-young spread the news. She promises to see him at home — she’s decided to move into the third floor. She’ll talk to his mom, she says seriously, “Let’s do it like that. It’s my birthday.”
Haeng-ah lets herself into the empty third-floor apartment. She folds back a dust-sheet, and sits for a while. On her way down, she meets Aunt Princess. Shocked to see her, Aunt bundles her out and tries to send her away before Mom sees her. Haeng-ah says she’s already moved her things in, but Aunt argues that it isn’t the right time — she’ll look after Mom herself, and what she needs most right now is peace of mind. Haeng-ah reluctantly acquiesces.
Not a moment too soon. Mom comes out…in her house slippers. Aunt sensitively sends Mom to the car while she gets shoes. Mom controls her disquiet. In the car, she tells Aunt that there are three things she musn’t forget: First, to quickly apologize to her ailing father; second, to marry Ri-hwan to someone who can protect him. And finally, to remember that that day, she was so happy. Face soft, she asks Aunt to remind her, should she come to resent the world, or be depressed, convinced that she’d never lived a single happy moment, that she had that day.
Haeng-ah goes to the rooftop to return a call from Suk-joon. He asks if she’s okay, but she returns the question to him — is he okay? After a pause, he thanks her, and asks if they can meet. After he hangs up, a man who introduces himself as someone from Channel Korea meets him and they shake hands.
Ri-hwan passes Ji-hoon burying his jar again. He explains that he’s accepted he can’t have both things (drink and Tae-hee), and asks why Ri-hwan has two flower bouquets. He says they’re for his mother by way of apology for their argument.
Mom meets with Yi-seul’s mother to apologize for standing her up last time — her story is that a patient died on her. Yi-seul’s mom’s barbs aren’t even veiled. While Mom looks surreptitiously at the prompt-notes she’s made on her phone about the meeting — Yi-seul’s name, why she’s there, getting her story right — Yi-seul’s mom scrutinizes her from beneath her hat, noting her cheap things.
Yi-seul’s mom remarks that both their children lack interest in their respective family holdings, each only having their own little clinics. She has to stop herself from openly berating her daughter several times. But Mom speaks warmly of Yi-seul’s personal qualities, and Yi-seul’s mom says that there are plenty of people who want to marry her money.
Ri-hwan isn’t like that, Mom assures her. He’s so conscientious that he pays monthly rent to his grandfather, but that horrifies Yi-seul’s mother on sooo many levels — he doesn’t even own a house, doesn’t have the money to and he pays his grandpa, like a stranger?
Her reaction offends Mom, who thought that she pursued marriage based on Ri-hwan’s personal character, since his minimal inheritance is no secret. But if they’re a family who don’t want such a son, then she doesn’t want to send him to them. (Plus, that woman hasn’t taken her hat off the entire time, which is just rude.)
We next find Mom visiting Yi-seul, who has to awkwardly explain that Ri-hwan is already seeing someone. Mom quickly clarifies that even if it’s not Yi-seul, it can never be Haeng-ah. Mom wants to know how she feels. Yi-seul wants to look good to him, but she can’t do something bad to achieve it. But what if she asked her to, Mom says, adding that she must seem like a strange mother.
She’s met Yi-seul’s mother, hasn’t she, Yi-seul asks. She tells her that she spent her life looking at her mom as just a woman, a person. Anyone can be weak or greedy, and take out her pain on someone else. Because she couldn’t understand all that, you couldn’t call her bad.
Yi-seul starts to talk about how Mom had Ri-hwan alone, but catches herself and apologizes. Mom says she’ll leave Ri-hwan’s life soon, and tells Yi-seul about her illness. Yi-seul immediately vows to do her utmost to help, anxious for Ri-hwan’s sake.
Unhatted, Yi-seul’s mom flips through a new dossier of (in)eligible men when Jung-woo calls to rebuke her for messing up the match with Ri-hwan. Yi-seul is sincere; this is the first time she’s said she wanted something. Mom just can’t understand why a measly herbal doctor with nothing to his name would turn someone like Yi-seul down. Jung-woo cryptically remarks that he might have an inkling.
We flash back to when he found Yi-seul making chocolate-biscuit towers. When he asked what he could do to help, she replied, “Nothing.” She explains that she likes Ri-hwan because he’s a good person, but he already has someone. And because he’s a good person, he’d never throw that person away for the things Yi-seul can bring. Lastly, if she really likes him, she can’t ask him to break up because of her. Present Jung-woo sighs.
Suk-joon and Haeng-ah sit in a coffee shop where she’s acutely aware of passersby throwing glances at him. He brings up yesterday, and she lightly brushes it off. She thanks him for the cake he brought her, and stands to leave. He asks her if, when she was sick this time last year, it was like last night. Quiet, he apologizes.
He fumbles for a way to ask her to come back to him, and she shakes her head. He promises he’ll make up for keeping her waiting. The cake is enough, she smiles.
Tae-hee and Manager Jo cross paths, and she blocks him. He boggles that of all the weird people at the station, she’s the strangest of them all. She just wants him to answer her question but he refuses. She advances on him while he parries a pen in defence (Tae-hee: “Do you believe the pen is mightier than the sword now?”).
Se-young runs lines with Joon-soo (he in hilarious falsetto), the two flirting fighting it out as wife and mistress. Wife Joon-soo makes to pull out Mistress Se-young’s hair, and she screams for help. Tae-hee and Manager Jo burst in.
Joon-soo explains, and a close-up shows the name of the drama: “Nine: Nine Infidelities” Hahaha! Se-young tells them it’s about a perfume that allows the wearer to seduce any man, but you can only use it nine times. She gleefully anticipates lots of slapping and hair-pulling, and aspires to become the nation’s most hated woman. On their way out, Tae-hee asks Manager Jo if he stills thinks she’s the weirdest.
She still wants the answer to her question: He likes her, right? He finally agrees to answer, but then we cut away.
Ri-hwan finds his mother’s door locked at the hospital, and a nurse tells him she’s on leave, which is news to him. Mom’s doc-friend spots him and asks to have a chat.
On a bench outside the hospitals, Ri-hwan’s roses sit forlorn beside him. The doctor’s words run by him, how Mom will get progressively worse. He’ll have to stay close to her, since she’s already tried to kill herself twice. That shakes him even more — twice? When the doc tells him it was long before the time he saw, he realizes it must have been when he was born. Tears pool in his eyes.
Left alone, he remembers all the little oddities in Mom’s recent behavior that now add up. The world blurs around him while he remains fixed.
The clinic is busy and Ji-hoon needs him. He calls Tae-hee to find out if Haeng-ah knows anything.
Tae-hee knocks on Haeng-ah’s desk. She tells her Ri-hwan called her last night, and admits she was so angry, she told him about her meeting his mom. Haeng-ah now realizes what his morning “sorry” meant. Tae-hee says she can’t defeat Mom, especially not when she feels so sorry for her. And Ri-hwan is even less able, knowing how much his mom sacrificed for him. She tells her to cut her losses and get out.
Mom is sick, Haeng-ah tells her — really sick. Tae-hee advises her not to uselessly hurt herself with other people’s pain — and why isn’t she smiling, when she’s always smiles at times like this? Haeng-ah changes the subject, and asks for a song for the show. “A Too Painful Love Was Not Love,” Tae-hee says.
Night has fallen, and Ri-hwan remains fixed at the bench. He remembers the other night, when he and Haeng hung out at the clinic rooftop. He slides a wall-panel back to reveal the view, which delights her. He suggests a holiday, and she wants to go with Mom, too — the three of them (to Ri-hwan’s disappointment, lol). She’s never seen her laugh freely, she realizes, and wonders when his mom was happiest. Maybe when she was pregnant with him?
Ri-hwan says that for him, his happiest moment is right now. “Me, too,” Haeng-ah says. She blows a bubblegum-bubble, and that’s the moment he closes the distance between them to kiss her. When they separate, Haeng-ah breaks into a grin, before initiating a second time. Afterwards, she buries her head inside her jacket…and Ri-hwan blows a bubblegum-bubble with the…nooo! That’s grooooss!!
In the present, she texts him that she can’t see him tonight, and he wishes her a happy birthday. Their written words are cheerful, but behind the screens, their eyes are damp.
Walking down an empty hallway, she remembers Ri-hwan’s promise that she’ll never lose them, and how he encouraged her not to be afraid to be with him. The memory is overlaid by Mom’s words, telling her that Ri-hwan will need a lot of people around him, a surety against a future where he might develop the same illness. She thinks of their happiest moment.
Ri-hwan remembers his child-self, crying for Mom because he was scared. She had to leave him, and reminds him to count to ten when he’s scared. Child Ri-hwan starts to count, and melts into adult Ri-hwan. He can’t get past five, and even that dwindles until he’s stuck at “one” and the tears roll freely.
In the studio, the gang surprise Haeng-ah with a party, replete with cake and millions of candles. But her distress finally catches up to her, and she breaks down into loud sobs. Eventually calming to sniffles, she apologizes that it was because she’s so happy. Tae-hee seems to sense that it’s serious, but Se-young just enthuses that getting this much love must be a real treat for her. She comforts Haeng-ah and tells her that they’re all family, and family does this stuff. Haeng-ah whispers that she’s alright, and leaves.
Ri-hwan drinks the night away in silence and sober Ji-hoon pours his shots. On the way home, Ji-hoon steadies him as he stumbles up a footbridge. Reaching the top, he lifts his head and finds Haeng-ah right in front of him. Both their eyes shine with tears. “Haeng-ah-ya…” he says. He reaches her in a few steps and throws his arms around her.
In an epilogue, we revisit the special day from Mom’s memory. She meets Haeng-ah’s dad for a meal at Secret Garden, and they laugh together about how much their kids fight. He wonders what brings her by, and she asks if it isn’t okay. He replies that even if she wanted to live there, it would be fine.
She jokes in response, although her eyes are hopeful, and Dad awkwardly acknowledges that he’s kept her waiting. But they have a long, long time, and Mom lightly notes that this means he’s telling her to wait. It’s a promise that they have a future, otherwise he’d be saying no.
The kids bustle in, arguing loudly about their respective crushes, each complaining to the other’s parent about their kid. The adults grin at each other, and Dad sends them out to finish their fight. But both kids sit instead. Haeng-ah bags the chair next to Mom and tells her that Ri-hwan’s taste in women sucks, and he’ll end up bringing home a weird one. He tells her to wait and see what kind of girl he brings home, and she retorts that she doesn’t even care.
Later, Mom gets a page at the hospital. In voiceover, she relates that that day started like any other. Beaming with happiness, she runs outside. Dad had come to find her, all of a sudden, “And that day, we…”
COMMENTS
Is this “that day” the same as the other “that day”? Why are you confusing me in my first recap for you, show? That brings me to a point, though: I don’t get what they’re doing with some of that dialogue. It’ll only go halfway in making a point, and that’s really frustrating, because you need the second half for it to make sense! Like Mom and Yi-seul’s strange, mismatchy, non-sequiturish conversation. I’m left thinking, I understand all the words, but I don’t know what you mean. Is it artfully obscure, or am I just dumb? (And when in doubt, I go with, “I’m just dumb”).
I really like that Bubblegum centers around so many female characters, and that those characters are very distinct. The women in this show — Mom, Haeng-ah, Tae-hee, Yi-seul, even Se-young — are complicated, strange, different, a little broken, and I love that about them, even when the characters (okay, Mom) drives me bats.
At the center of it all, Ri-hwan remains blissfully functional and not at all odd, but for being the only “normal” person in a sea of weird. It makes it extra amusing that Suk-joon brings out a callow side in him, although he’s actually unusually mature. But because he’s angry and resentful towards him (and more than a touch insecure), he acts up in a way that makes Suk-joon come off the better from their encounters.
To Suk-joon’s credit, that moment in the previous episode where he looked up at Haeng-ah from the stairs and half-smiled, I didn’t hate him for the first time. He’s much more interesting to like in a complicated way, than to hate, and this hour, he was surprisingly gentle (and contrite). I’m beginning to see how Haeng-ah could like him. Maybe that’s her particular charm, to see other people so kindly. It makes her lack of self-interest become a symptom of her eclipsing concern for others. Notice how she — constantly and without cynicism — deflects questions about her welfare by turning the question. In this episode alone, I counted three times.
My joint-favorite (with Tae-hee) is Yi-seul, whom I find a Mary Lennox (Secret Garden) kind of character: prickly and hurt and struggling to get along in a world that doesn’t fit quite right. I love that she’s smart with her heart as well as her head; there isn’t a disbalance between her emotional and intellectual capacities. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t suffer with her emotions like the rest of us, but she’s centered enough to know what she should and shouldn’t do. I half-worry that Mom will talk her into vice, but the other half thinks she’s anchored enough not to turn shrew.
It surprised me (although it shouldn’t, but I am naïve) that she knew her mother resented her for resembling her grandmother. It’s hard for any child to discover the defects and vices of their parents, but how much harder to endure being trodden on as well, and remain filial to them. Perhaps it’s the consequence of her treatment that she’s not artful, and remains disarmingly direct. I really, really like her. In the alternate-universe version of this show, Ri-hwan could definitely love her.
Tae-hee is quite similar to Yi-seul, but there’s an added childlike clarity to her personality (where Yi-seul remains quite obscure) which, strangely, makes her less vulnerable than Yi-seul, but also more fragile. Although equally candid, she’s ruled by a childish logic that demands straight-shooting: She asked a question because she wants to know the answer. It’s not a ploy. She already knows she likes Manager Jo, now she needs to know if he likes her, so she can take the next step. She’s very linear — if you know only that about her, you can figure her out, and it makes for an endearing and hysterically funny character. She’s so unusual because people aren’t linear. They’re all tangles of mixed motivations, fears, pretensions, and it makes her the strange one, when she’s arguably the most straightforward of them all.
As for Mom, it seems clear that her opposition to Haeng-ah stems from whatever she had with her father. My guess is that they intended to be together officially (probably marry), but it didn’t happen because he died. It certainly explains the mixture of obligation and soured affection that she harbors towards Haeng-ah, her almost-stepdaughter. Watching her illness take hold is particularly sad, as she tries to parse out her forgotten motives from her actions. Because she can’t remember, she has to use her intellectual understanding of who she is, and her unfinished business keeps her from losing focus.
While I sympathize with her anxiety for Ri-hwan, I think her method is wrong. To think she can control these things and that makes his life better is just an illusion. Family isn’t only made of bonds of blood and law, as Haeng-ah, Uncle and Aunt prove. None of them are related to her, yet all of them feel and care for her like family. Their emotional bonds are as strong, and that’s why she’s wrong about Haeng-ah and Ri-hwan. Both of them have “family” — in Ji-hoon, Tae-hee, Uncle and Aunt, Dong-hwa, and to a lesser extent, others. They’re not going anywhere. And even if she’s worried about ten or twenty years down the line, well…if all else fails: Let them have kids! The sooner, the better! Problem solved!

Loving this show!! I'm a little worried about Ri Hean and Haeng Ah's relationship because they're both keeping secrets from one another at this point, which is never healthy for a relationship.
I also hope that Mom will stop blaming Haeng Ah soon and realize that Ri Hwan's happiness is more important than money or family by blood that doesn't truly care for you.
So excited for the next episodes!!

Welcome, Saya to the recappers gang of my favourite drama! And thank you so much for understanding characters.
I'm sure all of us have the same opinion, that Ri Hwan's Mom should get that family it's not only blood related people. And it's pathetic that she's trying to find family to his son in weird and selfish chaebol clan even though Yi Seol and her brother aren't bad people.
Your constant reaction and the way she has abused Haeng A makes me almost hate her.
Oh, and that kiss..."When Lee Dong Wook finally meets great co-star". Their chemistry is explosive. The best kiss for me in a lot of sences

Actually, I don't get Ri Hwan's mother. Haeng Ah won't be his only 'family'. He'll have Uncle Gangster, Aunt Princess and their adopted daughter, and there's Ji Hoon too. Though they are not related by blood, they'll definitely care more for him than Yi Seul's family ever will. In fact, I can see (and hear) Yi seul's mother screeching away in horror if and when he gets the same dementia as his mum. She'll probably put him away in a centre and pretend not to know him at all... and how can she guarantee that Yi seul's siblings will stand by him? Or even Yi Seul for that matter.

Nobody can understand that not completely, but still evil mom, who seems doesn't care at all about her son's happiness. That's so selfish to want him what you want and not to count hs own desires.

She is the most horrible mother i have seen in years in dramas and she doesnt deserve a great, loyal son like Ri Hwan.
She is horrible beacuse she is selfish enough to try to kill herself twice for a man over her only son. Now she suddenly cares about his happiness??

Oh, you're reading my mind! Yes, how can she dare to tell him who he should merry if she has tried to kill herself and him as well being pregnant and then one more time? And still he loves, cares about her, lives with her and triesto respect her oppinion. True, she doesn't deserve such a great son, as him. I have tears in my eyes when imagine, how he loves her.

What might be going on is that Mom is worried that by the time Rihwan gets Alzheimers, Haeng-ah will be dead already from stomach cancer, so he'll have no one. I *think* that's what she was implying in their cryptic conversation.

I had both laughs and tears mixed all episode long. I can't get enough of this drama and constantly rewatching some parts. Of course, that kiss has left me breathless. And it was love. But as well I'm in love with emotional parts when RH finds out about mom's disease and the whole world around becoming complete mess for him. Lee Dong Wook's acting is amazing. Another scene which has touched me, when HA enters her Birthday party at work, but she's ending crying. Jung Ryeo Won's acting was so natural here. I have felt every her fear, thought and tear.
Thank you for recap. Now much time left untill next episode, but I'm feeling a bit nervous how much angst we'll have in it.

This drama has me feeling all the feels! It's as if my heart is in my throat the entire episode long because there is just so much emotion packed into every minute of this show. I've been rewinding and rewatching some parts too (like that bubblegum kiss, whew!) because I feel there's more to be taken in than in just one watch. I've always thought that Jung Ryeo Won's crying is one of the most natural and evoking, especially when I think back to her Kim Sam Soon days. She really sells the overwhelming sense of despair and uncertainty in that moment.

Thanks for the recap, Saya.
Love Tae Hee in this episode. For giving it to RH. He needs to know how HA has been treated, even if he could guess it himself. And deal with it.
With regards to Mom, I'm restraining myself here. From poking her eyes. For the way she treats HA. There's no negotiating with Mom when it comes to HA+RH. I don't get her resolute refusal to allow that pairing. There'd better be a good reason for the refusal somewhere in her backstory or I'm really going to pop into the screen and poke her eyes! Until her back story's revealed in the next couple of episodes, I'll try to restrain myself. :-D
I can't agree with Mom's reason for wanting to marry off RH to YS if it's to have more people around RH in case he gets sick in future. YS is of unknown character to Mom, there's no guarantee that she'll stick by her husband through thick and thin. YS can easily divorce her husband if he gets sick. Couples have broken up for less. And Mom already knows that RH will not be welcomed with open arms into YS' family. Mom's reasoning for now, is skewered. :-(

I almost forgot about the polka dot dress RiHwan's mom wouldn't give up (when she cleaned out her closet) and in the last scene, she has it on under her dr. lab coat. What a nice detail - I think the other person who said she did marry the dad is right and it's her "wedding dress"

True. What I love in this writer, that everything she shows is for purpose. This dress seemed to be small detail, but she explores it in few episodes. Probably they have married, but still it's not a reason to confront son's choice

Hm, that's funny. I guess I interpreted moms statement wrong. Did she mean that Haeng Ah doesn't have anyone else so if she ends up with Ri Hwan he will have no one else? I thought it meant that she knew Haeng Ah regards Ri Hwan as family and she wants Ri Hwan to have even more family, broaden his support network, so to speak. I thought it was pretty selfish of her to think that way, even if it might make sense from a mom point of view. I'm still unclear on whether or not she actually cares about Haeng Ah. And I wonder if Haeng Ahs dad told her something about mom. Maybe that is why she is unusually attached to her? Whatever, love this show! Can't wait to see where it takes us!

Maripaz,
that's the point, i don't think Mom's love for HA's dad is that selfless. nor does she truly cares for HA's emotinal being, ... if her idea of "family" means physical support, financial attachment, essential needs meet... then she is dead wrong... say if RH is "married" into that Chaebal family, as a more inferior suitor... having not able to inherit that hospital since he is not interested, having a mom that will not draw strength from her rich dad's background... will YS's family not discover that RH himself may be more of a "rejected goods", if they discover he may have inherit his mom's fatal diseases, thus discard RH by forcing YS to divorce him?
Mom, rich family work like a corporate world, is not a real family, any times, even a CEO may step down, anyone can be thrown under the bus.
Family is not "born" by marriage. Family grew from the heart, the kind without blood ties are the most solid bond.

Err excuse me. But how can u say that kiss is gross? I usually felt flat on Kdrama kisses. The light-lips-touch-kiss. The it's-the-man-work-only-kiss. The-stiff-kiss. And the list goes on. But this one is hot. And the bubblegum makes it cute and interesting. LDW and JRW are great kissers.

Errm, it's not the actual kiss she was calling gross, just the exchange of chewing gum from one mouth to another, which admittedly, is kind of gross, from anyone's perspective! It has nothing to do with liking or disliking the OTP - way to turn a molehill into a mountain. *rolls eyes*
Thank you for recapping, Saya! Always a pleasure to read!

Thanks Saya for getting to the nub of these characters.
These characters are fantastic! In this show, the characterisation is everything and these actors are doing an amazing job of convincing me and making me feel along with them, even if I cannot quite understand.
It's great that even though the story deals with something as painful and tragic as Alzheimers or even as difficult as alchoholism, it never feels dark or depressing. The tears I cry along with the characters give relief and do not bring me down.
I wonder if we will see that our main characters can manage to go against the flow of stubborn mum and continue to be honest and upfront about how they will manage their relationship, and how they feel with the new tragedy of watching mum lose herself and die. It will be refreshing to have the story go the way it started with the openness of our leads and the decision to defy wishes that would lead to greater pain. :)

Guess we all know now why the show is called bubblegum ^_^
This episode really squeeze my heart out, and i hurt with both Ri Hwan & Haeng Ah. Got confused a lot about Mom tho, her character doesn't seem consistent; is she a weak and selfish woman who chose suicide over her son, or is she a strong and smart mom who really wants the best for her son? All this mumbojumbo about Ri Hwan needing family is so weird too, her relation to her own father pretty much explain how this "family ties" can be broken. Will keep on watching and having faith that the story will make sense.
And how lovely to watch Haeng Ah "family" at the radio station, all buying cakes for her to make up for last year!

Mum has obviously been suffering from depression for a very, very long time - mostly kept at bay through will and focusing on her son. She has had to be strong, raising a child by herself, and having cut ties with her family.
The love for her son makes her strong as well as weak, giving but also selfish. Human, basically.

So frustrating when I've written a super long comment for it only to disappear because my internet cuts off WAILS. I should get into the habit of c+p before I click submit.
Thanks for the recap!
I love every single one of these characters. I have reservations about many of them, but they're great ones, because you can easily see their weaknesses and why they carry them. (E.g. I'm not 100% lovingly sympathetic of YS even though she's had a life of emotional abuse from her mother, but I love the character).
They all have true motivations, and the reasons for the things they do are logical manifestations of their individual thoughts and actions. Such a varied cast, and the women especially are glowing in their differences. We don't need strong women, we don't need weak women, we don't need a 'type' of women on our screens - we need all sorts of women, and this drama does that perfectly. They all have a life off the screen, lives that resonate with the audience.
This, along with R1988, are constantly cutting off at pertinent moments of a scene only to bring it back later for an extra meaningful punch. Sometimes they're fantastic, other times feel unnecessary.
But that one on the rooftop with HA and RH? KILLED ME. Because the scene itself is so gorgeous! They're at peace with their past, blissful in the present, and dreaming of a future. They have the most adorable kiss ever (legit, so cute - and from similar personal experiences, I don't uh consider it disgusting oops) and HA reciprocates with such adorable excitement :')
But knowing as the audience what kind of terrible things are going to befall them ... and the fact that n o p e RH's mum was the furthest thing from happy carrying him ... ;____;
I might be a minority voice, but I actually love where the writers have taken RH's mum. It works especially well because her acting is superb. I know many have commented on how it seems to be derailing into a makjang, but I don't mind cliches if they're done well, and alzheimer's is not rare at all.
I don't agree with her. But I understand where she's coming from. All the things she wants for her son, the things she believes are the most important for one's happiness, HA does not have. It's not her fault, but she is the furthest thing away from what she wants for her son. And mothers are selfish when it comes to their children.
1. She wants someone who can care for her son, more, or at least as much as he cares for her. RH has made all the main decisions in his life around HA, and definitely the every day things as well. His whole career is because of her, come on.
2. She wants /lots/ of people to be able to care for her son. HA has no other family.
3. She wants someone that can enjoy a good long life with him. HA's parents both had cancer, she fears the same.
4. She wants someone who is financially stable and has a high quality of life. She's come from a rich, classy family. Whatever happened to...

Oh dear, first time I've been cut off on this site.
and 5. HA was almost the step-daughter, which is definitely weird. Our DJ could tell us all about that, with her wealth of old drama knowledge, hee. (Their relationship is the cutest bawwwww.)
It's bittersweet, because I'm guessing that the next 8 episodes will explore how there is something beautiful that lessens these problems or at least decreases their importance - but will RH's mum be able to realise that for herself? Will she be lucid? D: D: D:

This episode was HEARTWRENCHING for me. I could understand where everyone was coming from and that comes from the strength of the script. People made sense and people's motivation made sense so that even when you don't agree with it, you can still feel for the character.
I hope ri hwan and haeng ah have the courage and conviction to know that they can be happy together and that their parent's past should not have a bearing on their future.

That kiss ... will go down, for me, as one of the most realistic and exciting kisses in Korean drama history! I especially loved the way Haeng Ah went in for the second time -- when do we ever see a female lead take control like that?! Thank God for cable LOL.
And I do not find the bubblegum swap disgusting one bit. It's playful and fun and it really conveys a level of comfort they have with one another. Haeng Ah also going in a second time is such a beautiful way to show her tacit agreement in taking their relationship to another level. I love how, despite knowing each other for their entire lives, she still gets shy afterwards and yet can playfully fight back when Ri Hwan teases her.
I mentioned in a comment above but this show is seriously so emotionally thoughtful and provoking that I find myself solely focused on watching the episode during its hour. I refuse to do anything else because so much can be pulled and interpreted from each moment.
tvN has been on such a roll with the pieces of life dramas that I love!

Saya, thanks for pinpointing that HA's "particular charm, to see other people so kindly. It makes her lack of self-interest become a symptom of her eclipsing concern for others." that's the thing about her, like what RH reminded Mom, "Even after hearing you said that, she has never once resented you. She said she likes you. She wants to be good to you.” In her happiest moment, she chose to go for a trip together with mom, not demanding RH to herself alone at all. that whatever she wanted was as simple as a mundane day to day thing. What she wanted is not things, or places, but just to be with him. Even to sleep, eat and talk, is a vacation, is relaxing, is resting of her mind.
and she wanted to add Mom in, the other woman in his life who despised her, never ever felt sorry for ever thinking about dumping her, and selfless act meant so much to him.
when someone really loved you, even if going thru normal day to day life events will be beautiful, as long as you are with her, by her side. This is how HA felt. just like the way she melted Taehee with her sincere smile, her selfless self reproaches, repaying evil by good, finding goods in difficult demanding people, even when Se young demands her to help carry her dogs to the hospital, facing TaeHee's initial blunt words, smile thru Yi seul's unfriendly exchanged at YS's clinic.... HS just smile thru each encounters... accepting all the blunts, insults, characters faults of each.... yes, you said right, she see others so kindly.

RH: “That’s no reason we can’t. I’m happy when I’m with HA. Now that I’ve given myself permission, I’m very happy.”
Loved the kind of man that will not hide behind filial piety, and responsibilities towards his beloved mom. He will spared no minutes to remind his mom, that if his mom truly loved him, his true happiness should be what his mom single mindedly sought after isn’t it? Now that “I’m happy”…. Mom did not see that he wasn’t happy in the past? Mom didn’t see that he simply obliged to go along with those match-making sessions, being the perfect son he was, how many young men will go along endless match-makings just to please the mom?
Loved the kind of man that will “give himself permission” after confirmed that his beloved one also loved him, and will fight for his right to her, before his mom. Not that he don’t worry about his mom, problem is he did not see any reason why should he part with her, and there is simply NO REASON, even as we viewers also should not see any sensible reasons for a split to the couple.
don’t understand why some viewers keep saying he is childish in his silly jealousy and bickerings, but I find him, one of the most sensible and wide awake in facing his true naked feelings.

this show, cried bucket of tears and it's only epi 8... i know when something is great coz it sticks, coz i can relate and just uttering those words from a character holds true however sad, selfish & misguided it seems...
getting personal here, my mom suffered from a stroke last year, and let me tell you it's hard. the daily grind just to take care of her without feeling guilty about going out and thinking how it would be so easy if we put her to a nursing home is real. sometimes you just can't help but cry, so when RH's mom said those words, my gosh... so, i understand her, coz i'm in the boat she's talking about, it's the family that stays, and she wants that for her dear son. with that, the writer might steer RH to YS side coz of guilt, i hope not...
this show is lovely coz it breathes life to relatable characters. they seem real, jaded, fearful and hopeful at the same time... the only show i can liken it to would be alone in love. and that's one of my all time fave, so here's to bubblegum, more heartfelt confessions and revelations!

“What hurts more than hearing “Why did you hurt me?” is: someone who cannot even say she is hurt. And not being able to say anything but “Do Not Be in Pain.”
First I think HA is so pitiful, not being able to say she felt hurt…. But to act nothing happened. And continued cheer everyone on besides her, to smile, and say encouraging words, knowing RA will be thorn between the two person whom he loved most. A slight look of the eyes, a word of displeasure, a hand gesture… will make RH felt the hurt of not been able to protect her, or the guilt of hurting his mom by speaking up for her, …..
but we all know, RH’s pain is never lesser than HA? But how much more painful?
to see your loved one’s pain, a normal KDland hunk will bang his way thru, spoke to the parent, refuse to eat or sleep, so much that the parents will give in just to spared their son of prolong pain, demanding respect for his beloved girl…
but RH didn’t do all these. Why did he stay in silent, not even allowed HA to know he knew her pain? For HA, the reason she hid her pain, was not to spread her worries and sadness to RH, if HA knew that RH was wounded like her, she may blame herself. Before he can find a solution, and heal both woman in his life, he cannot do useless acts like confronting and demanding useless talking or words of assurances which all 3 knew will not be meaningful. Mom has to accept HA, before that. He can’t even tell her not to worry, whatever comforts are temporary.
Real hurts cannot be weigh, of who is more hurt than who…. To each who is hurting, only the ones hurts knows the depth. It just take more courage and a mature love, to allow your loved one to bear her hurt alone, when it helps her more.

RH: “When were you the happiest?.... For me, it’s right now.” HA: “me too.”
RH did not count that night when he kissed her…. What triggered this happiness. Because he knew her, when a girl tell you, she loved simple thing like, sleep-in, eat, talk together with you…. This is exactly what a couple will do in normal mundane marriage life. That’s means she loves you. RH is a guy of “now”, and loved just now he just seizing the “now”… that night at the cross road, and now…. And he did now her happiest moment is now too for her, and he can sensed it thru her eyes, her voices, her gestures, that this is the happiest moment of her life. Seeing HA grew to be more comfortable in his presence, feeling HA loves deepening by the days for him, seeing HA find happiness in small simple sincere ways in him alone…. This is a little tale about simple people, just like those living around us, finding simple joy in accepting simple full of flaws people around us, appreciating simple acts of kindness, enjoy simple mundane daily lives with our dear ones. Bubblegum teach us to appreciate the sincerity of simple life. Just like the gum in your mouth, seize the moment, suck all to your good pleasure, appreciate that moment in your mouth, fret not that bubble will burst, burst already , blow another, pain joy anger… it will be numb and tasteless one day and be spit out.. then go on in life, and blow another bubble… enjoy it while you can.

I'm in love with this show. Yet, I do find Yi-Seul and her family unnecessary to the story. There's enough weight without some forced arranged marriage plot line mucking up things. That said, I really want to trust the writers because everything else is being handled beautifully. Bubblegum is one of the few recent shows I've watched where I didn't question the writers' decisions. With this show I just want to enjoy it so, I hope the writers will give us something unique and different with Yi-Seul.

If to talk about episode itself...yes, I was crying, crying a lot. RyeoWon is definetely great in crying scenes. That's how we, women in despare cry in real life. And Dongwook has cried naturally as well. I prefer Rihwan's style of crying then Cha Jaewan's (Hotel King). Rihwan's suffering is more close to reality then Hotel King's makjang type.
Earlier I thought that Dongwook is better in dramas then in romcom/melo, but Bubblegum has changed my oppinion and I really want him to continue with this type of funny, light, but complex and multilayered characters.
And after "Bubblegum", even in the middle of it, I can't understand how people can think that his "My Girl"'s or "Scent of a women"'s characters are the best he has played...

I'm loving all the characters so far, except perhaps for Ri Hwan's mother, who I just don't seem to get at the moment. Show is going to have to shed more light on what makes her tick, because right now, I can only see her as somewhat selfish and hateful towards the people who love and care for her. Actions speak louder than words; and so far, both her actions and words towards Haeng Ah have been mean and uncalled for. I sympathise with her as a mother wanting to protect her son, and as someone with a dreadful illness, but I can't quite sympathise with her attitude towards Haeng Ah. I need a good reason before I can accept her cold treatment of the girl her son clearly loves, and whose father she clearly looked up to.

hi, namedx (known you since Healer era, loved your writings at Moru Moru)
for RH's mom, i believe its more than just to secure a "good family" behind her son facing the possibilities of RH inherited her illness. i guess its more than that.... to have people that won't throw RH away because of blood/marital linkage. very Likely is kinda of link to HA's dad,
Scenario 1: out of jealousy of HA's mom, which is not possible, because there were clips of memories where she lingered happily with HA's dad and HA at the restaurant. (Crossed out this)
Senario 2: can it be something HA did that indirectly caused dad's death to speed up?... remembered RH told Mom that she cannot blame HA's dad's death upon HA. But if so, HA should have known and felt guilty too. (Crossed out this)
must be something HA ignorantly did that caused her to scenario 3: Ha ignorantly caused dad to missed the chance to confess to her, or making dad using HA as reasons to turn her down.
all in all, i don't believe Mom's selfish is just plain selfish and sucking up to past glories and wealth of her dad....
if she truly loved HA's dad, shouldn't she be more than willing to nurture and love HA as her very own, because you should love who your loved one loved dearly, isn't it? by throwing icy stares and cold words at HA, does she not worry of facing HA's Dad one day and answer for not loving his most beloved inheritance on earth: HA herself?

That moment when Haeng Ah walked into her surprise birthday and just fell to the floor crying LITERALLY had me bawling. I have absolutely not clue why that scene made me cry but something about all the pent up emotions this woman has resonated with me. It was like pure raw emotion - this is how women cry; I hate those stifled teary eyed sniffling; I'm a hot bawling mess when I cry with mascara running down my face and puffy eyes in the morning. I love JRW!!
And that Bubblegum kiss!!! I had to watch it twice because it was so cute! I loved how they both just laughed at the end - like that's what I would expect best friends from life to do. It's not awkward, it's just kinda funny that they never tried it before.

The toast kiss was the most sensuous (who knew that sharing a piece of toast could be so seductive? They weren't even kissing!)
The rooftop kiss was the most swoony (superman coming back to sweep her off her feet... if only they didn't split it over 2 eps, and if only they didn't muck up the music in the ep 8 part, that was a bit jarring). As for ep 15... pretty sure that was a blanket, and not her tracksuit pants...
This bubblegum gum kiss was the cutest (it's their reactions after the kiss that make it great! The smirk on Lee Dong Wooks face as he was blowing gum = priceless!)
But in terms of raw hotness, I think I have to give my award to Queen InHyun's man... with the tiptoe kiss, the Yoo Inna was practically climbing on top Ji Hyun Woo for the kiss. And then there was their alternate ep 16 ending kiss in the directors cut dvd.... that was just way too hot for public viewing!

I do sympathize with Mom but I have a hard time understand her reasoning. She wants her son to marry into rich family because they wouldn't throw him away when he gets sick, but what about her own rich family that seemed to be absent while growing up. He said it himself, he had no one but her and Haeng-ah, where was rich grandpa and co his whole life? YS's family is clearly a selfish bunch that would reject him as soon as they find out about her illness.
I don't remember what happened to RH's dad, where they married when she got pregnant with him? I'm sensing not.

Hey @HILLEO♥fab♥GO GO
Yes, you've got a point. Where does her thinking a chaebol family will not throw RH away come from?
About RH's dad, I'm sensing the same thing... Yi Seul knows that mum brought Ri Hwan up alone, and then apologised for mentioning it, which kind of sounds like it wasn't so much that mum was married and lost a husband, but rather that she bravely had a child out of wedlock.
I should try to look at that photo in the restaurant again ... it had Haeng Ah's dad, Ri Hwan's mum and perhaps the current owner of the restaurant in it? With the kids? But no picture of RH's dad, I think.

Ooof, things are going to get real tough from here on. I sincerely hope that HA sticks by RH's side and helps him through the dark times ahead.
I don't see any hope for RH's mum changing her mind as her Alzheimer's kicks in... for RH and HA's sake, I hope she has a period of lucidity before her death where blesses their union...
But I suspect that this may not happen. I get the feeling that this show is exploring the concepts of lost opportunities in life, as well as the hurt that can come with love.
BTW, I laughed out loud at the meta reference for Nine: Nine times time travel. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they immediately followed this up with a reference for Queen InHyun's Man (The Man's Man)? (Especially considering the fact that we have the same director for this show?)

That's the thing... Haeng Ah can't get pregnant, I think is what the mom means
