Sassy Go Go: Episode 8
by Saya
This episode granted my wish for all the good things — especially the good thing called Seo Ha-joon, the loyalest, most puppy-hearted marshmallow ever. On the downside, Soo-ah’s close to breaking, her secret under threat. But when you get to spend some quality time with resident sunbeam Yeon-doo, as her friends do today, the downsides really don’t matter so much.
I’ve got to admit I’m not sure what Sassy’s endgame is right now — but that isn’t a bad thing at all, because I’m loving every minute of the journey. Whatever, destination! Let’s just keep going like this forever! For four more episodes. Sob.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
Soo-ah runs up to the third floor corridor. Looking up at the security camera, she’s haunted by the thought of Yeon-doo discovering she’s the culprit. Returning to the dorm, she stares at Yeon-doo a long moment, before retreating to her own corner.
Yeon-doo gets a message from Hyo-shik — it’s the video he took of her with Yeol. She snorts at the hilarious accompanying message (“For Kang Yeon-doo, drowning in loneliness since her mister left…”) and chuckles at the video. But she notices something else, and exclaims she’s found the evidence to clear Yeol. Soo-ah turns in anxiety.
Yeon-doo and Ha-joon run to meet each other in excitement. She shows him the video, and we clearly see Teacher Im in the background, bear-USB on the counter. Putting it away, he leaves first. But Yeol was seen in the staffroom at 12, and the video is timestamped 12.58. “Therefore, Kim Yeol did not steal the USB at 12 pm from the staffroom,” Yeon-doo concludes, snapping her fingers. She holds out her hand for a low five, and giggles when Ha-joon bashfully obliges.
She stops him from calling Yeol right away — good news is best delivered in person. They’ll do it tonight, she says.
She sneaks out after everyone’s asleep, but a teacher’s up working in the lounge. Ha-joon is about to walk into the situation unawares, so she makes a run for him. In their haste, he trips. The teacher finishes up, and the pair hide, waiting for him to leave. Yeon-doo quietly fusses over Ha-joon’s scrape, when the teacher looms over them. Haha, oops.
Yeol lies in bed at home, reading. He laughs quietly at the photo Yeon-doo sent of her and Ha-joon getting punished for their attempted jailbreak, and even feels a little jealous of their punishment.
The pair are forced to duck-walk under the teacher’s watchful eye. Clutching her earlobes, Yeon-doo apologizes to Ha-joon for getting him punished, but he just smiles quietly to himself, totally glad to be there. He steadies her the moment she whimpers in pain. So so cute.
Back in his dorm, he grins over their punishment photo. Noticing the scrape he got before, he applies the ointment Yeon-doo gave him last time. Just everything is making him smile right now, aw.
Yeon-doo hides out in the laundry room and chats with Yeol on the phone, both of them grinning like loons. Or best friends. Yeon-doo tells him how glad she is that they can exonerate him, but Yeol says they still have to prove he didn’t do it after 12.58. But he reassures her that Meitantei Yeol is on the case, and she ribs him about his big head.
“Thank you. For believing me,” he says. Not as first-place Kim Yeol, but as simply himself. It’s the hardest thing in the world to put your trust in someone wholly, he tells her, “So it was a little less hard for me, because I had someone who believed in me.”
He’s back at school the next day, and Yeon-doo and Ha-joon see him to the Principal’s office. Inside, Teachers Im and Yang are also present, along with Instructor Nam, as Principal Choi reviews the evidence.
Teacher Im churlishly asserts Yeol could have stolen the USB after the video. Unperturbed, Yeol asks when he first discovered it was missing. Around 1.55, Im replies. In proper Yeol-style, he systematically lays out the timeline, grilling Teacher Im on his movements.
Im had it at 12.58, and it took him two minutes to come to class, where his bag was in the teacher’s desk until 1.50, when class ended. Yeol points out that it’s not possible for him to have stolen it with the whole class looking on, but Im argues that he could have taken it after. Nope, says Yeol. Im left as soon as class was up, and Yeol went straight to the club room with the cheerleading kids. Instructor Nam confirms his alibi.
Choi wants to know how it came to be in his bag. Yeol leans over and slips his watch into Teacher Im’s pocket, and asks if that’s the same as him stealing it. Understanding fills Teacher Yang’s face. Yeol asks if he can now return to school.
Yeon-doo frets with Ha-joon about the meeting, and he finds it strange how she’s so worried about someone else’s problems. She scoffs that he always says the opposite of what he means — she knows he’s a marshmallow inside. He protests, and she says that right there is it — he gets angry because he doesn’t know his own heart. She tells him to get along with it better, tapping him lightly on the chest.
Students buzz as Yeol, vindicated, walks down the corridors. In the classroom, the kids fawn over him, professing worry. Worry about what, Yeol asks innocently — their rank dropping? Yeol’s tone is light but his words are damning. They whine that he won’t be lending out his notes anymore, and grinning, Yeol tells them his grudges are no joke.
Principal Choi worries about the same thing to Teacher Im — she’s sure Yeol is going to hit back at them. If they don’t keep him in his place, he’ll hold it over them until he graduates.
Teacher Yang addresses the class. He confirms Yeol’s innocence, and the school’s resolve to now find the true culprit. But, he tells them, when they go down the wrong path, all they have to do is come back. His words make Soo-ah look up, caught between hope and fear. For whoever holds out their hand, Yang promises to take it and bring them back, “So I hope you gather the courage, no matter what.”
On the rooftop, Yeol, Ha-joon and Yeon-doo celebrate with coke toasts. About to pop his open, he takes a sly look at Yeon-doo and starts vigorously shaking his can. Seeing that makes her remember her trick way back (that ended with their not-kiss in episode 1), and she runs away, hiding behind Ha-joon. Yeol demands his revenge, calling Ha-joon a traitor. He tells him to choose — him or Yeon-doo? Him, of course, says Ha-joon…but Yeon-doo is crazy strong, he laughs, still shielding her.
Soo-ah listens in consternation as the team asks Yeol about taking a makeup test for the missed midterm. She calls Director Lee, who meets her mom. Mom is dismayed that Soo-ah’s new rank could be threatened, but Lee says a makeup test is unlikely since the results are already out and other parents wouldn’t stand for it.
Principal Choi tells Yeol that he won’t get a resit, but the midterm marks will be omitted from his final grade. Yeol rejects this as unfair — the fact that he didn’t take the midterm was the school’s fault. The only answer is a resit, he says. No resit, no matter what, Choi returns.
Yeol’s dad marches into the school, flanked on each side by lawyers. Choi is stumped by the threat of legal action and stammers excuses, which Dad agrees with easily. Heartened, Choi says that Yeol is sure to earn his rank back even without midterms.
Dad says the grades are not the issue now; he wants the school to rectify the wrong against his son — with a makeup test. She still demurs. His counsel take over, and explain that they will do two things: seek compensation for his unfair suspension, and sue for defamation. She listens, dumbstruck.
Dad faces Yeol, and tells him that he’ll pursue the case to the end, if Yeol wants it. Laconic, Yeol notes that he’s singing a different tune now, and turns on his heel. But he pauses when Dad calls out an apology. “I should have said this first: ‘I believe you.'”
Yeol almost looks back, but then swallows and goes on his way.
Dad meets Yeon-doo’s mom, and says that saying sorry to Yeol was scarier than meeting the president. She pats him reassuringly, and says that just three things — I’m sorry, thank you, I love you — are enough for a kid to grow on. But she agrees that raising a kid is tough. He nudges her about his proposal, and vows to be a good dad to her daughter. She promises to give more thought to it.
Hyo-shik carries the news of the lawyers’ visit to the clubroom, where Soo-ah hears of it. Phones are ringing off the hook in the staffroom as angry parents call up, and in her office, Choi has a meltdown. She yells at Teacher Im to take responsibility and stop Yeol.
Soo-ah studies alone in the clubroom when Yeol joins her. Offhand, he asks her how she’s finding being number one. Just as offhand, she replies that it’s been noisy lately, with all the fuss over his resit or whatever. With a shrewd smile, he asks if the prospect worries her.
Yeon-doo comes to collect him, and Soo-ah is reminded of her combing the CCTV footage. She goes to the security office and finds out that the hall cameras are managed by an external company. A little later, Director Lee hurries in and tells Soo-ah that the video’s been deleted. However, another student, who can’t be revealed, already took a copy. The suggestion of involving her mom panics Soo-ah and she begs Lee to keep it secret.
Yeon-doo commends Yeol on his revenge, and laughs when he extols his own flawless amazing head-to-toe perfection. It’s washed out her crappy feelings about the school, too, she says. He practically purrs when she pats him on the head, ha, but tells her it’s not over until it’s over.
Teacher Im patrols the corridors and thrusts his chin out fiercely at the sight of Yeol. Yeol tells him that he’ll be submitting a formal complaint about him, and turns away with a Cheshire-cat smile. Im clutches at him and cajoles him not to misunderstand.
Yeol treats the club to fried chicken, although the boys wonder if it’s okay. Teacher Im bursts in, and Yeol casually leans back to show himself, causing the teacher’s immediate retreat. A quick flashback shows Yeol saying that their misunderstanding could be resolved if Im refrained from giving his friends unfair penalty points.
Yeol asks Principal Choi for a favor, to renew Teacher Yang’s contract. If she grants it, he’ll stop demanding a resit exam, and drop the lawsuit. She’s surprised he’s taking an interest in anyone other than Ha-joon, but Yeol counters that Yang is not just anyone — he’s their homeroom teacher, and a good person. She agrees to think about it.
Soo-ah opens her locker in the clubroom, and is met by a flash drive and note, labelling it the thing she’s looking for. I can’t get enough of how perfect their clothes-slogans are: “UGH AS IF,” reads Soo-ah’s jumper.
It’s the incriminating video. She snaps her laptop shut as Jae-young and Na-yeon enter. Losing it, she screams at them, demanding to know who was just in here.
In her hideout area, she tries to destroy it. Dong-jae appears and she screams at him, too, for always seeing her at her worst. Ever unflappable, he advises her to just tell everything, if it’s so bad. She stares at him. A moment later, she asks if he’s been in the clubroom today. In fact, he was, he tells her.
Meanwhile, Director Lee tells Soo-ah’s mom that they successfully blocked Yeol’s resit. Now they brainstorm on how to appease the kids about Soo-ah, after all the sexual harassment fiasco. They still need to compete together at the cheerleading competition, after all.
Instructor Nam and Teacher Yang both shake their heads at the kids’ performance in practice, particularly Dong-jae’s solo. Since midterms are over, Nam suggests to Teacher Yang that they all go camping and get in lots of practice.
To their shock, Principal Choi agrees right away, and Teacher Yang even questions whether she has some ulterior motive. They’re further shocked when they hear Soo-ah’s mom will cover all the expenses. Teacher Im is pretty proud of himself when he figures it out — this must be how Soo-ah’s mom wants to absolve herself of their part in Yang’s false accusation. Choi glares.
As team captain, Yeon-doo prepares to leave early on the morning of the trip. Dong-jae surprises her by showing up, and she realizes she hasn’t been spending much time with him lately. She pouts in apology, and he pouts back. Laughing now, he hands over a strawberry milk. She sighs happily that the strawberry milk he gives her is the best. They set off with Teacher Yang.
The rest of the kids hop about in excitement, which is dampened when Teacher Im joins their party. He immediately starts picking on them for makeup and dyed hair, until Yeol intervenes. He heels and everyone’s moods perk up again. Yeol is adorably put out to find that Yeon-doo’s gone ahead — with Strawberry Milk, at that. It’s even funnier that Ha-joon isn’t bothered at all.
Finally, everyone collects at the campsite. Their trip’s concept is to go analogue and enjoy nature, Teacher Yang announces, and he takes away their phones to a chorus of whines. He sends them off to find refreshing activities.
The majority of the group gather together for snacks. They speculate on who might have framed Yeol, although Jae-young points out that everybody‘s standing improves with Yeol gone. Soo-ah sits apart, watching. Remembering Hyo-shik sent the video to Yeon-doo, she begins to suspect him. Her attention then shifts to Dong-jae, and then to Yeol. Wow, she’s driving herself crazy with suspicion. Returning to her tent, she brushes past Yeon-doo on her way out.
Soo-ah opens her bag to another pink note: “Deadline!!” it reads. She has until tonight’s campfire to confess. Now she suspects Yeon-doo, too, and goes out to look for her.
Since she’s been abandoned by the mischievous young ‘uns, Yeol helps Yeon-doo organize. He grins that she’s a pro at this captain thing, and she agrees — she’s like her dad that way. He notes it’s the first time she’s mentioned him, and she says she doesn’t do it too often, but it’s nice to sometimes. She says his dad was cool, though.
Yeol admits he hardly ever sees him — neither parent was really ever around. Yeon-doo smiles warmly, and praises him for growing up so well nevertheless. He ducks her head-pat, all laughs again.
Hyo-shik is back to catch them at dallying, and Yeol gives him a friendly telling-off. Teacher Yang finds the three of them slacking and sends the boys off to fetch firewood.
He sends Yeon-doo to get more drinks, but she’ll have to hurry since the local shop closes early. Soo-ah rounds a corner in time to hear him advise her to take someone to help with the lifting. Just as she’s about to leave with the groundskeeper, who’s giving her a lift, Soo-ah invites herself along, saying she needs something. Yeon-doo scowls to herself.
She finishes her shop while Soo-ah watches, arms crossed. She brings up Yeon-doo’s CCTV trawl, but she’s shocked by the sight of a pad of pink sticky notes in Yeon-doo’s bag — the same paper as the notes she’s been getting. Soo-ah fixes her with a hard look.
The girls head back to the car, but Yeon-doo needs to make a trip to the bathroom. She asks Soo-ah to carry the stuff to the car, but takes it back when she remembers who she’s asking. But Soo-ah surprises her by complying, and even offers to take her bag. This can’t end well.
Soo-ah hurries into the car and tells the ajusshi that Yeon-doo’s waiting for another teacher, so they should go on ahead. By the time Yeon-doo comes back, there’s no sign of them. By now, the shop’s closed, too, and she remembers her phone is with Teacher Yang.
Yeol searches the campsite for Yeon-doo and hears from Da-mi that she went on an errand. The girls clock Soo-ah’s arrival, and she tells them she was taking a walk alone. She steals a glance at Yeol and escapes.
Ha-joon roams the camp looking for Yeon-doo, too. Dong-jae is able to tell him that she went with the groundskeeper on an errand.
Back in her tent, Soo-ah opens her bag to find a new note. This one says that running away doesn’t solve anything, and she has half an hour left. She realizes with alarm that the note-leaver can’t have been Yeon-doo.
The party enjoy the barbecue, but Yeol and Ha-joon jog up to tell Teacher Yang that Yeon-doo is still missing (but why weren’t you worried before, Saem?!). Yang leaves Teacher Im in charge, and dashes off with the boys.
Yeon-doo walks alone down an empty road in the dark, looking scared. She trips, grazing her knee, and slumps on the ground, close to tears.
Teacher Yang and the boys find the groundskeeper’s office locked. Ha-joon rides off on a bike he finds, to scour the area for her.
Since there’s no cell signal, Yeol and Teacher Yang break into the office to use the phone. Yeal reaches the groundskeeper and whatever he hears sends him charging back while Yang follows.
Yeol catches sight of Soo-ah, who seems to be stumbling around in shock. In quiet rage, he asks her where Yeon-doo is. Her ignorant act raises his ire and shaking her, he roars at her to tell him.
Ha-joon pedals furiously along the empty road. Suddenly, he leaps off and hits the ground running — he’s found her.
Tearstained and bleeding, she breaks down at the sight of him. She hobbles into his arms, crying, and he wraps her up in a hug.
COMMENTS
How many times is Soo-ah going to betray Yeon-doo, really? Still, I have to credit the show, and especially Chae Soo-bin, for keeping us hopeful about her character. While crossing every line, she still exhibits an agony of spirit that makes you stay with her. But her denial runs deep — eaten alive by guilt and suspicion, could this be the crisis to break her of it? It was strange to finally see her first moment of genuine — and properly expressed — gratitude, when she thanks Director Lee for taking care of the video (although ultimately it didn’t help). Not only that, but she even requests, not demands, Lee’s help. So I haven’t given up on her yet, even if Yeon-doo’s breakdown at the end nearly had me in tears, too.
The mystery of the notes is surprisingly impenetrable (…or is it?). It can’t be Teacher Yang, he would never manipulate a student that way — I assumed it must be Yeol. He’d definitely have the resources to acquire that video, plus he’s tenacious with his revenge. He’s also been watching Soo-ah from the background, and forcing her hand is his style. But he seems strangely oblivious to her growing distress, and I’m entertaining the possibility that it could be someone unexpected. Dong-jae or Ha-joon? But both of them are far too straitlaced. What do you guys think?
But what a big change for Yeol, to use his revenge as a means to help his friends. Moreover, that “friends” now means all of the club kids, Baek Ho and Real King alike, and even includes Teacher Yang. It’s an indication of the kind of adult Yeol is on the road to becoming; incisive and astute, he’s skilled at political skulduggery, but he remains rooted to his values. It makes him a better foil to Principal Choi than even Teacher Yang, because power is everything and Yang doesn’t have it, adult or no. Although Yeon-doo finds the loneliness in his core, as she points out to him, everyone has it. The conversation about their parents was light, but deep, which is very characteristic of Yeon-doo. It meets the particular wavelength of her new friends in a way that moves them and makes them feel understood, but also makes them confide in ways they don’t with anyone else. She inspires the trust not only of the boys (including Dong-jae), but Jae-young and Na-yeon are also “hers” now.
The group integration continues, and it’s warming to see things like Da-mi lovingly sandwiched between Jae-young and Na-yeon, old walls forgotten. The show made it clear at the outset that Yeol and Ha-joon were outsiders, despite their elite status. In a quiet callback to the old status quo, the boys remain subtly apart from the group gathered for the trip where Yeon-doo’s already gone ahead — because she’s still sometimes their bridge to the others. But they and Soo-ah are special cases.
I’m trying to figure out what it means, what the writers want to tell us, that Ha-joon gets to her first. They could easily have made that Yeol, but it’s an outcome that further cements my hope that this show won’t ultimately disappoint. In giving it to Ha-joon, I feel like it’s a retroactive mission statement about the entire show: “In this world, friendship comes first.”. It made me think about how it’s different to You’re Beautiful, where prickly hero Tae-kyung always beat out sweet second-lead Shin-woo to get the girl, even though Shin-woo always moved first. In our story, everyone gets to be a hero. Leaving out genre-typical rivalries and ego battles, it keeps character choices in the spirit of the show. Things are messier, but truer, in a really good way.
I also like how it illustrates the way inseparable friends, Yeol and Ha-joon, are different. It’s Ha-joon’s instinct-driven nature that throws him headlong and feelings-first into tracking down Yeon-doo in person, while Yeol uses his head. We’ve seen Yeol’s systematic problem-solving in action a lot. He has a way of instantly analyzing a situation and then shooting to fix it at the highest level he can reach — he doesn’t go for the infantry if he can take out the commander. Generally speaking, he’s willing to bide his time if it’s most effective, whereas Ha-joon tends to be the emergency ground response. Neither is inherently better or worse, but with its unexpected results, it’s a difference I enjoy, and it makes cerebral Yeol falling for Yeon-doo even cuter (if that’s even possible!).
My favorite, favorite thing, though: Seo! Ha! Joon! Friendtimes with Yeon-doo! Seriously guys, I don’t know why this one friendship makes me live, but it does. Having another friend just makes Ha-joon so happy that I’m mad at the universe for withholding from him all this time. Gruffness notwithstanding, it’s obvious how much he cherishes every moment of friendship and connection with Yeon-doo, to the point of joyfully taking punishment (“I am Spartacus”!). But there are moments when I feel a twinge of sadness because it seems like he’s stockpiling good memories — against the bad that is sure to come? How lonely has he been all this time?
Not that Yeol hasn’t been a good friend, but Yeon-doo’s different. She exudes an optimism and spirit that grows Ha-joon in a completely different way — to go from merely surviving to ardently living, and determined to go down fighting. Or, not go down at all. When she tells him, so lightly, to get along with his heart better, with just a few words, she cuts right to the heart of him. I love it. I’m almost willing to forgo Yeon-doo—Yeol moments for more of this. Almost! But this show is so generous, it’s already given me so much more than I hoped for. Sassy Go Go, fighting!

Why are these people said Hajoon only sees Yeondoo as his new friend?

in denial much? kekekekeke
the truth is, i'm on hajoon and yeondoo ship.
why? because i can't see my jisoo broken hearted, AGAIN!:"
but if in the end yeondoo choose yeol, i'm okay with it.

No one is saying he only has feelings of friendship for Yeon Doo, only that he didn't yet know that his new feelings mean he is attracted to her as a girl. It'sa different kind of thing..

@DINS
I also gathered the same vibe that others were categorizing it as a special friendship. However, it's REALLY not how I'm seeing it. My perception of Ha Joon is simply boy falling for girl.
In this case though, I think the "falling" comes before the self-realization. (But I think he's becoming aware of it)
Anyway, let's be on the same boat, @Dins and enjoy their special moments while we still can!!!

DINS I am also kinda perplexed that everyone here is really optimistic about the whole loveline thing. Or maybe I am way too pessimistic? ;) I'm a Yeol-Yeondoo shipper by the way, but it would hurt to see Hajoon having his heart broken. But I think I would be more upset if Yeondoo really ends up with Hajoon....
And I really hated Yian in School2015 as well...poor Taekwang ah :'(

I still maintain, this show is friendship done write.
YD and DJ pouting at each other
OMG, how cute are HJ and Yeol disgruntled pouting at eachother because YD DJ left together.
And all the crazy kids together.
And Yeol just being a sneaky badass. And papa Yeol finally fighting for his son.
And God, that moment where YD patted Yeol's head and said that she's proud of him. Proud of how he's grown up so well. Not gonna lie. There were tears. To think that despite how smart and independent he is, Yeol needed to hear that from someone. And how YD said it was perfect.
I agree with what you said about Yeol and HJ, that they are different than the other kids and that YD is their bridge.
All the YD+HJ scenes. so cute.
Honestly, I'm done with Soo Ah. when she orchestrated that sexual harassment case on Teacher Yang, fully knowing what could happen (he could go to jail, his life ruined forever), I washed my hands off her. Sure she's pressured, but she still has choices and she always chooses the wrong thing and blame others for her terribleness. I'm done with her. Now, as bad as it is, I won't care if she did commit suicide. I have no tolerance for that kind of bullshit.
And HJ finding YD. I'mma just gonna cry now.

" I won't care if she did commit suicide"
I hate her too but isn't this a bit too much? Soo Ah is going mad from the pressure, too many students in my country commit suicide for getting bad exam results after facing Soo Ah's kind of pressure. so I can't agree with this kind of cruel comment.
I agree that the other scenes are very cute though.

I have to agree with pigsnout here. Suicide is devastating for everyone involved. The pain the one who takes their life feels or the pain the ones left behind feel is not something I would wish on anyone.

The suicide part of that comment......not cool. It's just as insensitive as we're accusing Soo-ah of being.

Thanks Saya! Great recap and I agree with your 'assessment' of the characters and motives.
I'm really liking the consistency in the characters. Ha Joon is the one who feels and reacts, he was the one in Ep 1 or 2 who was out to fight Real King (and somewhere along the line got his wrist bitten by Yeon Doo LOL!), he's the one who's desperately asking for help as he cuts himself, the one who decides to take action and go to his dad, who goes forward first to help YD in cheerledaind and later to take the fall with YD and the girls... and once again, he is consistently the one going with his heart in grabbing that bike and going out there to actively seek Yeon Doo.
Soo Ah is caught now in the downward spiral of her own making and is finding it hard to break out of the pattern of hurting others to hide past wrong doing or from deliberately not caring how she hurts others out of revenge or to protect herself. It's as if she may be thinking, "Might as well be hanged for stealing a sheep as for stealing a lamb". But how painfully conflicted she is, how she struggles against her heart and how distressful it is that she fails each time.
Yeol is consistently cool. I wish he'd be less the kind to hold a grudge and act on it, but at the moment he is true to this aspect of his personality. I agree with Saya: In the past he has believed in fighting only if he had the right ammunition and otherwise keeping himself aloof from the concerns of others, but his eyes have been opened by Yeon Doo's unflagging concern for others and sense of justice and he's been moving on from acting to protect only those for whom he has direct concern, to including 'good' people. He has consistently been the one to sit back a bit longer and to think before acting, so that it is Ha Joon rather than Yeol who has run out to find Yeon Doo.
I cannot fault this show for how the main characters are portrayed and developed.... so appropriately, timely, naturally, consistently... not something that can be said about lots of other shows (sadly). What a gem of a show, and it's a 'school drama' which somehow is relegated to us having lower expectations. It has far exceeded my expectations, even for a non-school drama, and I'm saying "Thank you drama makers for good work and for meeting our hopes for a well-made show!".

True @es, nice change from having the male lead chasing blindly after the missing female lead and instead thinking it through and going for the culprit. He may seem a bit cold-blooded at times, but it could well make the difference between making a mistake and taking the better option.

yeah, I absolutely love that Yeol and Ha-joon's actions remain so consistent with their personalities and how they approach problems.
And it's even more effective because they complement each other so well - Yeol is the methodical, strategic thinker who focuses on figuring out what happened and acting based on every bit of information he can gather (during the phone call with Yeon-doo, he was the one who noted that he had to account for the USB and his alibi even after the video was shot), while Ha-joon is given to impulsive, more immediate action - which he'd earlier channeled as self-harm out of desperation. Like breaking into the security office for the CCTVs, and at the end of the episode, he's the one who decides to just search while Yeol stays behind to track down the person who can give them a clue about what happened to Yeon-doo. I love how they work in tandem :)

After watching the coke scene and the end, I'm not worried about Ha Joon.I think he is acting like a brother looking after his younger brother's girl. When he watches them chase each other, he has this look of "aw they're so cute". I think if he was only looking at Yeon Doo then he would be sadder seeing someone else chase her, but he's okay with standing back and letting them have their fun. In the end, I agree with saya I think they just had different approaches to finding her. Ha Joon was just relieved to find her at all and was comforting her as a friend. I could see how it can be read as romantic but I think it's just a testiment of their growing friendship. I think Ha Joon will just have to be the best man and maid of honor at their wedding lol (though I don't think they have that tradition in Korea?)

You know, people had brought up the very interesting point that Ha-joon simply doesn't seem to realise what his new, smile-at-the-thought-of-her feelings about Yeon-doo mean at all, even though he knows enough to clock Yeol's attraction to her at a far earlier stage.
The pre-departure for camping trip scene just makes this astoundingly clear - it's almost a mirror of the scene in episode 3 where Ha-joon asks about whether Yeol isn't jealous of Dong-jae, and well, this time he IS. But what I found interesting was that even as Ha-joon's agreeing with Yeol, he doesn't seem to realise he's doing it BECAUSE he has similar feelings to Yeol's about Yeon-doo (which, ordinarily, another guy would have recognised as feelings he shouldn't have, and should potentially hide from Yeol). Like people said, he doesn't even clock that these feelings may be off-limits. And Yeol doesn't clock it either!
Which is why their ending that conversation with a little bro-shove and laugh just kills me. STOP IT YOU TWO!
(oh, and Yeol and Yeon-doo's phone conversation. I cannot get over how much it makes them smile. Or how much they TALK to each other.)
Back with more thoughts later...

Having just rewatched the episode where Yeol and Ha Joon had to beg forgiveness for HJ's outburst and seeing the pleasure the principal took in having that power over them, it was incredibly satisfying for KY to be able to turn the tables.
I pretty much love Yeon Doo with everyone. I'll be happy and sad whichever way the ship sails.
I do think KY and YD's personalities match just a little better though. KY doesnt seem as broken as poor HJ. KY is just too jaded and pragmatic. YD forces him to engage more and in return, his more logical approach helps her actually be able to change things. They balance each other so well.

I agree. YD and KY's personalities compliments each other more because of their differences that balance each other out. YD is the kind of person who takes actions, while KY is cynical, thinking before taking action. Their relationship is like push and pull. YD pushes KY to be more active with such situations, while KY pulls YD in some situations to make her balance between her mind and heart.
On the other hand, YD and HJ's personalities are more similar with each other. They are both active people, they are the kind of people who takes actions upon their feelings and emotions. They are the Heart and Heart. But because of their similarities, they'd match better being best friends than being in a romantic relationship.

Has anyone made a list of the clothes captions?
In this episode, I remember:
- SA: 'Find me' (so apt); 'UGH AS IF'
HJ:
- the top with the diamond (at the beginning)
- the t-shirt with 'A' on the front (like a grade! after his shower post-punishment
Yeol: 'young and beautiful' (when he's at home, in the beginning)
During the cheerleading practice:
- Dami's top has...a piglet...on it? LOL
- DJ's, from what I can read, says 'bingo'
Hyo-shik when he catches the canoodling couple at the campsite: 'HYPER'
[BONUS: ultimate cuteness at campsite --> when Saem comes to take the boys away, Yeol and Yeon-doo wave goodbye at each other SO CUTELY IT'S SO CUTE IT MAKES ME DIE OVER AND OVER. Just love love love how easy their chemistry is.]
From episode 7:
Yeol: the back of his green jumper says, 'HUK HUC is a common exclamation from feelings of relief after hard exercising'
(We see this when he joins HJ to take responsibility for the signs)
Yeon-doo: 'filluminate' ...no idea what this one means, unless it's some illumnati thing. Actually, this one's quite disturbing XD

Kwon Soo-ah really is driving herself crazy. She thinks only Yeon-doo has the pink post-its in the whole world. Poor Yeon-doo, got lost and hurt because she trusted Soo-ah once again, I just wanted to wrap her in a hug. Is there really no turning back for Soo-ah?
I just love this episode so much. The rooftop moment with OT3 is beyond beautiful. This time around, it's Yeon-doo's turn to pat Yeol's head, I can't help but giggling while looking at them.
Even though I've been sailing Yeon-doo - Yeol ship since day 1, Yeon-doo and Ha-joon are incredibly cute together (the selca! ♥) and that last scene which I previously thought would danger my ship turns out to be another meaningful moment of friendship between them. Joon-ahhh noona is ready to laugh with you, even to sob and hug you when you finally able to figure out what your feeling towards Yeon-doo really is.

It's just so refreshing how self-aware Yeol is of his feelings toward Yeon-doo. This is sadly such a rarity among male leading characters. It might have been cute the first time someone played the I'm-an-oblivious-high-and-mighty-chaebol-and-therefore-am-forever-in-denial-about-falling-for-the-"average"-female-lead trope, but that gets tiring and insulting real fast.
Yeol recognizes his developing feelings for Yeon-doo every step of the way, and perhaps even analyses it in his one-two-three logical fashion. That scene where he wonders why he was jealous of Yeon-doo and Ha Joon being punished together is great stuff.
This show in general is also very self-aware. That scene where Yeon-doo apologizes to Dong-jae for neglecting him lately is basically the show toeing the ground in apology for not giving us many N scenes lol.

Right? I was laughing to myself last night about how an emotionally stunted 17 year old who trusts no one and pretty much raised himself... even he doesn't go through the 'what is this weird feeling in my chest?' BS that half of all male drama leads, usually 30-ish heads of major corporations, go through. No more of those guys, it's annoying! It's also unusual how he freely admits it, and actually talks to his friend/brother/third leg of the triangle about his feelings. Most 2 males and a female love triangles occur because the BFFs and/or brothers never say anything, like normal people do: "so I literally ran into this pretty girl the other day..." instead, only after they've all fallen in love with each other do they find out there's -1 degrees of separation between all of them.
Lastly, I also love love LOVE the writing team for giving such good female characters. There's far more caring about grades and friendships than boys among this set, in fact I can't even recall a single conversation about romantic interests between two of the girls in the show. It has passed the Bechdel test about 1000 times, which absolutely warms my heart. When Yeon Doo gets wrist grabbed, or Yeol tries to stop her, she yells at him. When Ha Joon threatens her, she bites him. Even when Yeol makes that comment this episode about how he wants to open cans for her, she goes, "anyone can open this". There isn't a student character in the show that needs less protecting than KYD.
This is such a nice contrast to so many other dramas with similar setups-- Heirs is the one that comes most immediately to mind (prestigious school, one girl three guys, one of them is her BFF, friendship? between the other two), the main difference is that poor Park Shin Hye was just pulled around like a tasty dog treat in between hungry dogs, while Yeon Doo is one of the most active characters in the show (also, Sassy Go Go has a plot).

*Nods head vigorously* Couldn't agree more!
Though there are moments when Yeon-doo needed support (e.g., deciding whether or not to do the interview, or frequently tripping over her own feet), I never interpreted that as her character being written weak just because she is of the female persuasion. Her character shows moments of weakness because she is human, and a teenager who is at times struggling to grow into a strong woman. I'm super super happy that her character comes with a great mother figure who understands and supports her. Her character is also not any "weaker" than the other male characters. They all have their own demons to deal with, and some struggle more with it than others (here's looking at you, Soo-ah).
As for the wrist grabbing, hah, I believe there's more than a few times where Yeon-doo had grabbed the boys' wrists.
This drama is progressive in many ways, I'm just hoping many teens are watching it online, if not on live broadcasts.

Ha-joon is the more likely candidate for that than Yeol :) But he's literally 17 years old and had a seriously screwed-up family life, he has an excuse.
Totally agreed about the female characters too. Soo-ah may do awful things, but one can't deny her character is interesting, and so are her interactions with Yeon-doo. Jung Eun-ji and Chae Soo-bin have great chemistry in their scenes together - it's rare to have two female characters in the same drama given such depth, and nothing short of stunning that a high school drama has avoided turning its second female lead into an antagonist AND not given her a love line of any sort. Her and Yeon-doo's conflict is about them, it's nothing to do with the boys in any way.
As for Heirs.....it was a makjang drama wearing a high school uniform. It's about as much a high school drama as I am a supermodel.

yes i LOVE that yeon-doo is so proactive in her own story. you understand why she's the main character, why she inspires such loyalty from her friends, and of course, why she's got three guys running in circles around her (albeit for different reasons). the great thing about her is that on paper, she's very similar to a lot of other kdrama female leads, but onscreen, eun-ji brings those traits to life and makes yeon-doo so much more likeable and relatable instead. and it's also due to the writing, which never fails to display yeon-doo's strength and vulnerability in equal measures.

Been consistently giving SASSY 5 stars every episode, because to me, it's just that good! (Btw DB, thanks for the new function!) It's nice to see how well-loved this show is, what with how it exceeds a thousand votes every recap plus the glowing reviews in the comment section, of course. I also want to thank Saya for the recap! Your analysis at the end was spot-on. Couldn't have said it better myself. (Meitantei Yeol, haha! Love your humor.)
Yeol wins a hundred points this episode from me. He has Principal Lizard and her minion wrapped around his little finger and he does it LIKE A BOSS. But it doesn't end with that. He's come a long way from the indifferent Yeol who only looks after himself (and Ha Joon). Him going out of his way for Teacher Yang marked a huge step in his character development. Which is another thing that this show does SO RIGHT. We get to see how these kids grow and become better over time. Well, maybe except for Soo Ah, but I refuse to give up on her yet. Dong Jae, too. If only he'll get more screentime.
I don't think we have much to worry about with regards to the love triangle too. I see HJ and YD's relationship as more of a deepening friendship (regardless of how mushy inside the hug at the end made me feel. Bless you, Ji Soo and Eun Ji, you talented people! The emotions were so on-freaking-point!) HJ doesn't even seem distinctly aware that YD is someone he could view romantically but I think he does know that he shouldn't (since his bff that he's very loyal to got dibs on her first), and although he does seem to struggle with his feelings, I believe he'll pull through in the end. It just wouldn't make sense for the show to turn tail and dive into a full-on love triangle at this point. Whereas Yeol's interactions with Yeon Doo come off as friendship + the intention of something more, Ha Joon seeks Yeon Doo's presence more for much-needed companionship and simply for the fact that she makes him smile. :)

You know, the amazing part about Angry Mom is that before the drama started, no one even knew that there was a part like Bokdongie at all. The news only talked about Baro being cast as Kim Yoo Jung's bf, the producers also didn't say anything about Ji Soo. But just a few episodes later Bokdongie was all people wanted to talk about!
I actually wonder if the PD and writer protected Bokdongie's role by not saying anything about it before or making it public so that they could fill the part with an actually talented actor. You know if idol agencies knew that role would have such a great impact, they would be running to stick their idols there. But no one they cast could have Ji Soo' s impact.
And to think that this is the kind of talent we miss out on seeing every time some bloody idol with no talent for acting ends up getting a role because of their agency's media play. And lock out talented actors from opportunities.

Agreed!
I also think that they didn't expect such positive fan reception to Bokdong's character earlier on. Maybe they expanded his role from being just a bad boy that the viewers can symphatize with to even giving him a noona-crush storyline, because the writers saw his potential (unless everything was pre-written, seeing as how it won a screenwriting competiton or something). Had it been any other actor, Bokdong wouldn't be as memorable imo. They did very well on casting Ji Soo. He pretty much stole the entire show.

As an addendum to my post (off-topic): In hindsight, I feel a bit bad bc it's like I just discredited all the other actors of Angry Mom by focusing on Ji Soo alone. It was generally a VERY well-acted show, with special props to the lovely and feisty Kim Hee Sun (I'd like to include her on the actors who surprised us most this year, referring to my discussion with pogo under comment 62.1.1.1.2), Gong Joo (and OMG I just realized how she's also playing Soo Ah's mom in Sassy!), Ji Hyun Woo as Noah and the guy who played the evil teacher.
(Sorry for going off-tangent! Ok, back to SGG now!) Similarly, Sassy, like many others have mentioned, is a little gem of a show with a solid cast. Absolutely not a single weak link in here! For a newbie, Ji Soo's a real lucky guy to work on two consecutive shows with a great ensemble. What a way to kick-start his career!

Saya, you got very beautiful explanation up there, thank you.
I think Soo-ah very much similar Baek-hee from Dream High 1. Both characters was spiralling down while being scared by their own doings. They walked through cold and lonely path and just didn't know how to escape by themselves.
Baek-hee got her chance to redeem herself, though. The scene when her worst enemy, Hye-mi, preventing her from suicide and telling her that things'd be okay was the most tearjeking moment between girls in Dream High 1. I hope Soo-ah will have same chance too, with a helping hand from our warmest light, Yeon-doo.
As much as I'm in the OTP Yeol x Yeon-doo's boat, I don't want this drama to be mere triangle love. Not that I don't trust writer-nim - it's because the other previous dramas have traumatized me. And it will be lie if I tell that Ha-joon x Yeon-doo doesn't have cutesy and chemistry.
However, I believe it'll be more beautiful if that's because Ha-joon sees Yeon-doo as his knight in shining armour; a moral compass and someone he looks up to. And I don't think Ha-joon will ever mess up with Yeol's territory.
For me, Ha-joon looks like the type who thinks, "Yeol is important to me. Yeon-doo is also important to me. I wish for their happiness and I will protect both them no matter what," like a loyal king's guardian in saeguk drama.
And OTP is called OTP for reasons. Their moments are deep. Not necessarily tearjerking but emotional. They compliment and support each other. Feels like heavenly matched up.
I'm also looking up to see Ha-dong in action. He is odd but definitely not stupid. The way Real King and Baek Ho meddling in the background is just as sweet.
In short, this drama is perfect even with its flaws and imperfection.

This drama is sooo good that I'm really mad with the poor rating..the promo team can definitely do some things better..from the title choice to the drama description,i feel like they did an injustice to the drama..i mean, how many of us r truly really excited about a highschool cheerleading drama..what made me watch dis at first is bcause of eunji,n how thankful i am that it turns out reaally good..plus,y did they only interview eunji for entertainment weekly?having LWG,N and Jisoo as well would hv helped in attracting more viewers..i pity the casts, i want them to know that they really did a good job..?fighting!!
Regarding the parents love line, i have this crazy story line in my mind .remember the flashback where yeol's father hit his mom for having an affair? So it could be that he figured out yeol is not his real son.but being a nice guy he is, he still raised yeol as his own son even after his wife left... Where we had been shoved with Hyemi and Jingook love the entire drama to had Hyemi choose Samdong on the 16th episode. duhh..
Having said that, it might be an open end where YD will be friends with both boys because HJ will never try to break YD-KY apart even if he likes her and YD will be forever oblivious about KY feelings towards her. haha. So Jisoo can keep liking YD without having his heart breaks and date another girl who is just like YD whom he met at Harvard during his medical degree. Untill Jisoo can get a girl, then only KY step up his game and finally YD will be able to know KY trur feeling.
I'm totally with LollyPip about SA. At this point (and next week preview) she is done. Unredeemable. The writer need to make her hit rock bottom before I can forgive her if she ever apologize.
Also, my bet is on DJ for the note.

if there's anything this show could do better, it'd be to lessen the emphasis on the school politics, lessen the scenes of the principal trashing her office because no one's given her anger management classes yet, and spend more time (MUCH MUCH MORE TIME) on the characters we care about. AAAHHH i could just watch these kids go about their daily high school lives for hundreds of episodes without a plot tbh, but unfortunately the kdrama rule dictates that any drama that deserves more episodes than it has will only be given twelve.

OMG! In my mind, I tried many different ways to describe HJ and Yeol but none ever comes to this level. I just had to copy and repost this part of Saya's analysis. It's the most profound thing I've read to date! Thank you so much Saya for the recap and for this:
"I also like how it illustrates the way inseparable friends, Yeol and Ha-joon, are different. Generally speaking, he’s willing to bide his time if it’s most effective, whereas Ha-joon tends to be the emergency ground response."

I hope Soo Ah gets punished in this drama. I hate it when the villains are forgiven without punishment. I want her not to get into a good school. Please please drama! Even God punishes though we are forgiven. Ha-Joon should also not get his hopes up, though I love him too but Yeol and Yeon Doo are power couples.

Yeah me too. I actually don't want her to get a pass even if she realises the error of her ways and apologizes. I mean she stole a test, framed someone for the theft and then used the inside knowledge to do well on the test. So even if she gets away with everything else and still manages to not get expelled, she should get a zero on her midterm and that will bring down her rank in the school. She's not like Yeol, who apparently is so far ahead of her (didn't the Principal and toady mentioned that he's like 100 points ahead of her, so he'll easily make it up in the final). Getting a zero for her midterm should make her lose several spots in the system.
I'm actually concerned the writers are going to expose her, she breaks, decides to attempt suicide, and have that act as her 'apology' that makes everything okay when Yeon Doo and crew save her.
I just have to remind myself that I trust the writers. I trust the writers not to write a terrible love triangle, I trust the writers not to cop out on the justice that needs to happen for the corruption at the school, the corrupt mothers and Soo Ah's actions. Please dramagods hear my prayer.

I've been watching bits and pieces from this episode on loop since it came out, so i've been dying to read what the author and all of the comments said. It was worth the wait! Loved the comments about how Ha Dong could very well be the one threatening Soo Ah, given how he reacted to Soo Ah using Yeon Doo. I hope he is the one doing it, because N hasn't really had a chance to shine, even if he may not be the greatest actor on the show.
Don't really have much to add today, just want to gush about things I liked:
1. Teacher Im! Firstly the guy playing Teacher Im is great. I loved that nervous smile he gave every time Yeol cornered him. He was hilarious! Also, now that he can't just go off giving unfair punishment points, and doesn't have Princi breathing down his throat, he's pretty cool with all the kids. How awesome was that whole scene when he sang 'Let's go!' and the students copied him singing 'Let's go!'. Found it pretty cute. Hope he stays that way.
2. Seo! Ha! Joon! I love the nickname you gave him - marshmallow. He really is becoming one. Loving the cute interactions between him and Yeon Doo. Coming to the hug scene, it's apparent that she hugged him because she finally found someone she knew to comfort her, but when he put his hands around her I saw it as him accepting the fact that he has a crush on her. Also, in the preview, he was grinning like a monkey. Super cute! Yeon Doo was like what's wrong with him? LOL.
3. Kim Yeol! What a comeback buddy. Loved seeing him thinking about his friends and using his revenge to protect them. Also him letting go of such a good chance to save Teacher Yang.
4. It broke my heart to see my baby Yeon Doo hurt, scared and broken. It kills me when happy go lucky, jolly-type characters get sad. Same thing happened last week with Kim Shin Hyeok from SWP, happy characters need to be kept happy! I'm going to cry buckets if and when Seo Ha Joon has a mini heart break. He's someone that needs to be kept happy too, and for that alone, I'm happy not to have Ha Joon-Yeon Doo who I want as my OTP. They should just be friends.
5. Boys bitching session about Dong Jae-Yeon Doo! Lol.

Really...really love this drama, love the plot till the current episode, and love all of the character of this drama, all of the characters are well played by the actors too.
It's obvious that Ha joon fell for yeon do but i don't think he will try to get yeon do since he will choose yeol on top of that (like when yeol ask him in coke rooftop scene, who wiil he choose between him and yeon do, and ha joon answered that he will choose yeoul without doubt). That's why he looks like need a moment to think before he finally hug yeon do in the last scene of episode 8.
And for the sticky notes, it think it's Ha Dong Jae, beside all of the evidence that have been told by saehee before, dong jae was going to the camping site with teacher yang and yeon do, and he helped them too with all the preparation so he will also know the schedule for the bonfire. In ep 9 preview, there also a scene between dong jae & soo ah where dong jae push soo ah to tell the truth. But what make me still confuse is how dong jae know that yeon do was going to the store with the custodian and why he seems so relax when ha joon said that yeon do hasn't come back yet?.
Ooohh i can't wait for monday, but i really don't want something bad happend to yeon do regarding to ep9 preview when so ah push yeon do to the stair...please don't make yeon do injured. Writer-nim i believe in you, please write the best plot for this drama since it was very good so far.

Thanks for the recap, Saya!
So many feels in this ep with the various YD-HJ scenes and I just love their growing friendship. HJ being smiley is so heartwarming, whether receiving punishment with YD, reminising the punishment proof shot, or being spun around in Coke fight. And I love how YD can read him even though he has always remained distant from people. She has totally broken through those fort walls. I love seeing them together and the last scene with them hugging is my favourite. HJ finally has another true friend and he is able to reciprocate the comfort and protection that YD has been offering him all this time. What a novel friendship compared to being shielded by Yeol in their relationship all these years. It broke his heart to see YD in tears, and I'm so glad and relieved for YD that someone finally found her and that person is HJ. I agree with most of your comments that even if HJ might be developing feelings for her, he would never let this come between him and Yeol. Not to mention, I'm sure he can tell how much those two care about each other. So, he will surely cherish his friendships with them both.
It was also wonderful to see Yeol being able to trust again because of YD. She seriously draws out the best from Yeol and HJ, and people in general with her optimism, spirit, and sense of justice. I definitely agree with your analysis of Yeol and HJ and how they differ in their approach for tackling problems. So, I was not surprised when HJ hopped on the bike and went for it whereas Yeol searched for SA to give her a piece of his mind. Head vs. heart; well-written and performed.
SA just keeps getting worse... I can see that she does have a moral compass within her somewhere as she is not unaffected by YD not coming back to camp. She was feeling worried... But the fact that she abandoned YD at the store because she was scared of being threatened by the confession deadline just totally made her unredeemable... YD could have been in serious danger and that's not something you can do to another person. I hope all her cover-ups will be discovered and she will receive proper punishment. Maybe only when she loses everything can she realize that ranking and specs are not the be all and end all of the world.
DJ has a high possibility of being the sticky note messenger since it doesn't seem to be Teacher Yang, Yeol, or HJ's style. Can't wait for the truth to be revealed.

yeah, I don't actually fear the love triangle because at every turn, Sassy Go Go has focused on building up the importance of friendship......and it would be wildly out of character for the drama and for Ha-joon to go down the route of manufactured angst even while he's falling for her. He may be half in love with her but Yeol is still his best friend, there's no way they'd forget that.
And the Yeol/Yeon-doo conversations this ep were the absolute cutest, both over the telephone and in person. I love how much they've opened up to each other, and continue to do so. It's a deeper connection than if they'd chosen to focus only on the attraction, just to capitalise on Lee Won-geun and Jung Eun-ji's incredible chemistry. I love how absolutely giddy she looks when they're on the phone, and how he practically melts when she pats his head. His gaze has a way of just softening every time he's around her and she surprises him in some fresh way, and it makes me melt too.
Soo-ah.....earlier recaps and other commenters have pointed out that for all her scheming, Soo-ah can be a bit childlike in her ways, and that includes the inability or refusal to think about the long-term consequences of what she's doing. I think the episode did a great job of showing her practically ill with worry but feeling like she can't be exposed, and the extreme short-term nature of her motivation to leave Yeon-doo behind at the store just points even more clearly to how she's ready to snap.

However good is his intentions are, Ha Dong Jae is written off to be a rather poor bodyguard LOL. His level of concern is like zero compared to Yeol and Ha Joon's who are both gonna get a heart attack in the future if Yeon-doo goes missing even for ten minutes.
I wish they had written Soo Ah's character more humanly...the only time I felt an ounce of pity for her was when she was so thrilled to receive recognition from her mother after getting 1st on the test. It was heartbreaking to see how childlike and delicate she was in that moment. She just needs love that girl!!! But then that aspect of her character gets so overshadowed by her wicked ploys that it's easy to forget what's driving her ambitions. Also, leaving Yeon doo stranded in the middle of nowhere? I don't really know what that prank achieves unless she was hoping she'd never find her way back and die, which is kind of unlikely.
I hope they write more Ha Joon/Dong Jae/Soo Ah interactions because those two boys are the ones catching Soo Ah at her most vulnerable and can maybe extend a hand to bring her back into the fold. I'm trusting this drama to have a happy ending for EVERY character (even that drat principal) because that's what the message of this drama is conveying to me right now. Also, Soo Ah looks freaking happy in the promo poster so I have faith that she'll be OK in the end.

That's just the thing - Soo-ah's becoming so unhinged that she's lashing out at everyone she thinks is standing in the way of her 'perfect specs' (aka the only way she's ever going to get the motherly approval she so desperately craves).
And she's coming apart at the seams, because she's so ill from the stress that she's failing to even think out her plans now - like you said, I really don't know what she hoped to achieve by stranding Yeon-doo.
Looking at Soo-ah in the poster makes me so sad, because the poor girl hasn't looked that happy even once in the actual drama.

The same thing hit me, about how happy Soo Ah looks in the poster and how that expression has not happened yet in the show. I'm still hopeful because of that poster.
I felt that her abandoning Yeon Doo was just a flying-by-the-seat-of-her-pants opportunistic thing to stop YD from forcing her to admit her wrong doing at the campfire that night. She was desperate to avoid the looming confrontation from the notestix note sticker, and did not think beyond that crisis.

yeah, but Soo-ah has to be really far gone if she didn't think that Yeon-doo would somehow make it back to the camp eventually or that she'd have to face her afterwards. And if she was the blackmailer, that would piss her off even more and make the situation worse.

Soo-ah is really not someone who thinks that far ahead - she's weirdly childlike in that way. Like they said in an earlier recap, she's emotionally a kid stuck with a big brain, she just doesn't compute consequences well. Linear reasoning for larger goals (such as making Ivy League) exist for her in an abstract way, but she exists in the immediate moment. It's a really dissonant way to exist, really, the more you think about it - stuck in her moment trying to grasp a future, but unable to properly conceptualise that future, because she hasn't developed enough.
So when she abandoned YD, her immediate goal was precisely that. She doesn't think about abstract consequences until they happen.

I really really really hope so too. Her need for her mum's approval hurts to watch. I wish she wouldn't lash out so much and allow herself be loved. She would need to dance the tune played by her actions, sure, but she doesn't have to walk alone, if only she'd see that. Its almost as if she's terrified of what she'd find if she gave up on this path, like her entire identity, worth and security is woven into being no 1.

I love how this show has taken such a fresh twist to tropes we usually dread like the love triangle, by keeping friendship at the heart of things between them.
Though a huge part of the show pulling it off is also dependent on actor chemistry, and sadly in Heirs the OTP didn't have so much as a lick of it. They were just two pretty people occupying the same screen and making the right expressions but together, they were about as exciting as a glass of flat soda. I don't know if that would have changed even if he'd been written as less of an asshole.

As you put it... they had chemistry in Spades
and i think the characters did as well, he understood her and she him....
Woo Bin's character was all about empowering Cha Eun Sang whereas Kim Tan was all about telling her what to to, who to speak to and when to say what... It was very frustrating to watch the spark in her character flicker and die out.

I feel ha joon is behind the notes. He had access to the cctv. He was there to catch soo-ah when she exited the tent and the look he gave as she walked away. The look on his face was true concern when yeol was asking if he had seen the missing yeon doo. So the hug took on a different appeal to me. He was relieved to see her then he looked guilty that she was crying and needed comfort. He seemed to be contemplating if he had the right to comfort her or not if his actions led to her being put in the situation by soo-ah.

It's just a little sad that one Real King's member, Joon Soo (the one who broke down first (in ep 2) after the club was abolished) always pops and then disappears suddenly.
In this episode for instance,
he wasn't in the practice room with the others,
wasn't at the station when Teacher Im picked them,
wasn't there when they discussed the potential culprit of Yeol's case,
when Yeondoo was missing (at the barbecue) ...
and even though there's a glimpse of him when they just arrived at the camp site (wearing purple jacket&cap), I'm just mostly sad because he wasn't with the other guys when they ate chicken :'(

I think he's quit the show. I didn't see him at all in episode 8. When Ha Dong joined the cheerleading club, from 6 girls and 6 boys, it became 6 girls and 7 boys. When they were told to practice the first lift and assigned partners, one of the real king girls was left alone without a partner. So for that reason, i think they got rid of him or he quit.

nope, he's present at the campsite when they first arrive and Yang-saem takes their phones away - he's the kid in a purple baseball cap standing next to Hyo-shik. But he's missing for the most part :(

Yep saw him, he was hiding in the middle.
Then no idea why he hasn't been on the show, maybe he doesn't have dates.

I feel like soo ah is clearly not that bright, I knw she was pushed into a corner, but leaving yeon doo behind is kind of not a fool proof plan, it was easily found out and ineffective. Esp since she thinks yeon doo holds the usb, why would she provoke her further?? I just dnt get it, what she did was evil but also pretty stupid and backfires on her epically almost straight away. The note did say she has until the bonfire, so she was thinking to stop yeon doo turning up at the bonfire?? But what would stop her after that?? She's not the brightest bulb for no. 2

You know, I think Yeol learned something about this incident - two-faced people. It makes him realized that Ha Joon and Yeon Doo are his true friends. Ha Joon also realized the solidarity of Yeon Doo's loyalty towards Yeol, just as much as towards her team members, it makes him consider her as his true friend as well.
Now we see how these three got involved with each other. They are all sold out on their loyalties, also these three are very, very giving from deep down. Now we see why the Real King members and Ha Dong Jae are so loyal to her, and I think now Yeol and Ha Joon understands why her friends are loyal to her and always help her whenever something happens to her. But now that we see the Real King and Baekho kids are tied together now, they can all become true friends :)
