Hi there.
ah I dunno what to talk about.
maybe a couple of new funny things from the museum first. there was this swedish guy who came yesterday who was very upset we don´t speak swedish even though Estonia was part of Swedish Kingdom in the 1600ies. LOL. And then we discovered that a "sloop" as in a ship was translated into finnish as "magnifying glass" (suurennuslasi). there was a third but I don´t remember.
been watching She Was Pretty, Sassy Go Go and started Awl, which I really like, I knd of connect more to that kind of world than the office setup.
SWP has somehow run out of steam a bit. Like the train is moving slowwwwwly into the station. even Siwons antiques look a little tired. Maybe he doesnt have enough to do.
Sassy Go Go is sweet and all, but those woes are so far from me I feel like yeah, good for you, kids, but real life, you know.
I was thinking there are so many possible scenarios and we don´t know which ones and why were discarded before the writer and the PD came up with the scenes we see. same thing with having the same characters placed in a different setup. what if Most was not a fashion magazine but an agency for unusual models?
how to give something a fresher twist, I was thinking. cheerleading, yeah, but what if you have cheerleading team who is handicapped. how are they crossing their barriers?
task: take a set of characters and place them in a different environment, what happens? same types, different conditions

I thought it's only me who feels SWP is kinda slowing down. Watched 12 live, while reading document in another screen, and consciously skip live streaming 13.
Jisung would be able to re-activate my interest of the show.. Haha, I wish he's cameoing.

Maybe Ji Sung's Leonardo Kim? Yes, the show seems to be slowing down. A lot of spinning to fill up 3 more episodes.

A bit disappointed with HJ's kiss participation.

more on scenario possibilties. I made cardinal changes in the stories I sent to the competition. a different profession, a different motivation, many things work on their own, but you need to find things to bind the story together. so some coolest options justt dont fit,

hi ot! lurker delurking here!
i'm looking for some new shows to watch - a good smart thriller, with mystery, suspense and investigation-type stuff. a little noir is good, too, but also lots of feels are necessary. here are some shows i've watched and enjoyed and want more of:
- i remember you
- black and white (taiwanese) -- *particularly more tw shows like this!*
- missing noir m
- pride and prejudice
- ten
- healer
- city hunter
- sherlock (brit)
- two weeks
- liar game
- golden cross
- mawang/devil
- white christmas
- i hear your voice
shows I found a bit disappointing are
- mrs cop
- you're all surrounded
- masked prosecutor
- god's gift 14 days (entirely because of the ending - until then, it was AMAZING)

If you don't mind something that is crazy high on the makjang levels you might try Ghost, if only for So Ji Sub. Hackers, cops, crooked cops, a mysterious villain marked by the Phantom of the Opera theme, identity swapping ala Face/Off, murder, betrayal.

Yeah, I highly recommend Cruel City. The thing is, if you love it, you'll REALLY love it. It's hard to get that show out of your head. It's just a classy show and deals with real world problems, drugs, prostitution etc.
While you're at it, you can try Bad Guys. It isn't licensed on most subbing sites so you'll have to look hard for it.

a good smart thriller, with mystery, suspense and investigation-type stuff. a little noir is good, too
Yami no Bansosha fits that bill. Nao Matsushita and Arata Furuta form an unlikely team to solve a murder mystery.
Another dark mystery, Kageri Yuku Natsu.
Both are five episodes long so the stories move quickly.

You can try this Jdrama called Triangle. It has a decades old unsolved murder mystery and should have all the elements you're asking for.
And for noir, while Jdrama Strawberry Night is a police procedural, it has a noir flavour to it. Also, i would be eternally grateful to anyone who can point me to where i can watch its finale film Invisible Rain.

The Taiwanese drama I am Sorry, I Love You (aka My Ghost Friend) almost killed me this week. (Think Oh My Ghostess and genderflip it so you have a suave ghost helping a geeky but hot nerd try to get with the girl he likes, who is the ghost's former girlfriend. Possession only happens occasionally for just a few moments, mostly it's more like an invisible friend cheering on a guy with no self-confidence. Bromance level is at 11/10.) There was a huge twist this week which I won't say but I'm wrekt, wrekt! And nobody to talk to about it since I don't know of a forum similar to this for T-dramas.
I'm waffling on starting Bubblegum. Does it have any meat to it? It just looked too fluffy for me. I have yet to start up D-Day even though I was originally planning to. Is that one going well?

Lol. Hello there. There is indeed not a lot of places to talk about IASILY(which is kinda frustrating). The Soompi forum is pretty much dead too. I'm not too interested in the mystery and the club. But the bromance - that I like. I like it more than the romance lol. Watching for the friendships and the charming nerd that is Bryant Chang.

No kidding. The female lead is really kind of ... superfluous at this point. I mean she's nice and all and I like she liked Bryant's character even when he was all nerded up... (like when the girls crashed over at his apartment and her friend was saying it was a dump and she defended him saying he clearly had 'a system' for things...) but for me it's all about the guys helping each other out. How nice was it to have a scene where they sat and talked about their feelings and stuff going on in general for about a solid 5 minutes the other week?

Ha Alessar,
I actually described Bubblegum as not fluffy. I recommend watching the first two episodes to give it a try. it's fast-paced and the characterss' relationships will draw you in. D-Day in my opinion is a skip (watched 8 or so and dropped).

Yes a bit fluffy. Had to fast forward a bit. The characters and mood feel so depressing. Haeng Ah doesn't (hasnt) shown she's interested in the Ri Hwang beyond brotherly.
I will stick around for a couple more episodes. Hope the second male lead show more emotion. For now, he seems to be carved from the finest wood.

I just realized that the male lead of Frog Prince(tw drama) is Ming Dao. All this while, I thought it was Ethan Ruan. Lol.
Awl - Now this, I like. Ok, so I didn't find the plot interesting at first. But somehow, I was drawn to it and watched the premiere. And now I need more! It hasn't taken my heart like Jang Geu-rae did on the first ep. But I like the show for being realistic yet not so painful(I wouldn't have been able to go through the heart-wrenching eps of Misaeng without that prologue). I like the characters(all of them, in fact). The main reason, probably, is that there are no villains, just (villainy?)humans. And I like how our reluctant hero isn't the only awl in the drama. But, I guess, what I like about it is also what I don't like about it. I don't know, there's something missing and I can't point it out. Oh well, the grasshopper shall be patient. It has only been two eps after all.
I Am Sorry, I Love You - Ugh. Why? I knew it was coming since ep 1. And now they've done it. Why can't besties just be besties? I'm getting tired of the love polygon and the not-so-mysterious mysteries.
What's Up - Put it on hold a while ago. But I'm back. And I might start Tamra soon despite my allergy to sageuks(it's all your fault IJH)
Bubblegum - Sweet, warm and funny. Just the way I like it. Any more dramas like this? Of course, except that drama that should not be named.
I should stop putting dramas on hold 3/4 into the dramas. And I should not make a habit of putting finales on hold(I should go and see the last ep of School 2015 and Padam Padam). Oh and there's Healer and about a ton of other dramas too. Worse is, I like most of the dramas(some I love). I blame my short attention span. Well, I'm off to binge-watching the rest of The Genius S4.

I feel like I'm on pins and needles this week. I couldn't enjoy the current dramas I watch, so I re-watched The Devil, IRY, KMHM and Faith (yeah, for all the good and glory of the wooldachi's general). I marathon-ed those in 6 days resulting dark circles under my eyes. Haaa, how I long for the time to marathon a drama, get sleepless night and have panda eyes the next day.
After IRY ends, I feel none of the drama I watched could hook me. I watch almost everything but all fleetingly. Guess I'm in drama crisis right now. Any suggestion of good-meaty drama to watch, dear friends?

October 30, 2015 at 8:25 AM
Hello there.. I am usually a silent lurker in OTs but I had to comment cuz that is what i went through after IRY. No show seemed good enough. I think I watched around 5 different kdramas after IRY but none caught my fancy. But then I watched Liar Game and it at least brought me out of my constant IRY obsession. And after that I saw Kill Me Heal Me and White Christmas(a 2011 show) and they both were quite good.
Still, I don't think any of these were as good as IRY. Maybe good enough to help one get over the goodness that is IRY though.
Speaking of IRY do you know of any other show with loads of bromance and a subtle romance?

Bromance: Sungkyunkwan Scandal - in my pov, it's still the best so far.. ^^
Subtle romance: I love sageuk style in developing and unfolding romance like in Faith, Arang, Ballad of Seodong, King's Daugther Seo Baek, Empress Ki, Goddess of Fire etc.
But in modern drama, other than IRY for subtle romance that stays in my mind are Scandal, Fermentation Family, Thorn Birds and The Devil. Oh, Nine but it's not subtle at all... ^^ It's time travel mystery type of drama. Just like IRY and FF, Nine was flying below radar at the time it was aired. But it hooked me for good from ep 1.

try Giant? It's quite possibly the best long drama I've ever seen, and it hooked me right from ep 1. Three Musketeers is also a good option, if you liked Nine.

i still love she was pretty. i feel like the writer is painfully aware she doesn't have enough story to fill up all her eps, but is determined to be subversive in her own little but not so little ways. like, there's an airport scene - between two girl BFFs! hye jin attempts noble idiocy - but not by being cold and terrible, just, trying to stay at friends instead of lovers. and within the same episode, she tells him the truth about why! revelatory! and now that sung joon is over his asshole phase i love his sweet, respectful but still letting her know how much she means to him character. i don't really need it to go faster.
haven't caught up to this week's sassy go go yet, but i love it so much. eunji comes with inherent believability. she's an actress who makes you trust her completely. and the romance is so good. it's why so many shows which aren't straight romances, where there is an actual plot in some other genre, tend to have such great romances. that plot meams you don't have to spin your wheels trying to fill up 16 episodes with reasons the characters can't be together.

I hope you are all doing well today. ....... Halloween is tomorrow! If you celebrate, have a fun, candy-filled holiday!
Watched this week:
Hwajeong - 4 more episodes left to watch!
Yong-pal - Finally finished this. ....... It was ok. Just don't get me started on the little details the writer forgot about, or thought the viewer forgot about.
Village: Secret of Achiara - Watched parts of the first 2 episodes. ....... I don't know about this yet, but I will say it's doing a good job of transmitting that "creepy" vibe.
She Was Pretty - Just started this. Love it so far! It has some goofy, laugh out loud moments.
That's about it for now. ........ Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

"Insoo" and "Cruel Palace" are more historically correct (but not 100%) so it has it's own audience. It's mainly popular among the history fans and those that do not like their sageuks to be sugarcoated.
Queen Seon Deok, Dong Yi,Dae Jang Geum, Empress Ki etc has very little history because they are usually twisted, exaggerated, manipulated, sugarcoated etc to be more entertaining and less stuffy. That's what the majority of the current audience loves. So it all comes down to preference.

The thing about Seon Duk is that the peripheral characters were so good. I loved it when Al-chun comes around to Deokman's side (when the guy in charge wants to kill anyone who's injured.) I loved Yu-Shin's boys, and how they go from preteen pretenders to actual soldiers, Kim Chun-Chu (I fell for Yu Seung-Ho after watching this.)
So often saeguks only write well for the main characters, but I thought "The Great Queen" had interesting and compelling side charters. Oh, and don't get me started on Mishil's boys. How does a woman have her husband AND her lover (with sons from each) all in her entourage and control them all?
I've watched this 3 times. I'll probably watch it again. (But I quit before Bidam's final scene. It's just too hard to watch. (I loved his character.)

Exactly! ...... Every character had a full backstory. This certainly made the drama that much more engaging.
And yes, Mishil and her family entourage! That was certainly something else, wasn't it?

Dramas:
Bubblegum
So far so good. The friendship looks different from, let's say, Reply 1997. The characters are different from each other without being cliche or bad. I even enjoyed the radio announcer's antics! And they go melo from the start, not let's-be-as-wacky-as-possible-then-tearjerking-in-episode-15. The only letdown was the mom(s). Seriously, can they get any more cliche? Especially Park Hee-Bon's mom (I should've known it when I saw the actress). Bae Jong Ok's character seems to have something that makes her dislike Haeng Ah, so I kinda forgive her cliche-ness for now.
Films:
The Beauty Inside
Finally got the chance to watch this! It's pretty, very pretty, but bland. The plot couldn't get any more predictable. I enjoyed it for the actors portraying Woojin, but overall it felt like an incredibly long commercial or music video (given the director's previous works) that it kinda failed to build momentum. The ending was nice, though.
200 Pounds Beauty
Despite some disagreement with how the film portrayed fat-shaming and plastic surgery (Kim Ahjoong shouldn't fall in love with Joo Jin Mo. Like, he's bad. The character, I mean, but Joo Jin Mo was really handsome there), it was a really an entertaining film! Kim Ahjoong should choose projects like this, where she got to show her talents fully.
Bungee Jumping of Their Own
Starring Lee Byunghun and the late Lee Eunju. It's weird, almost as weird as My Wife Got Married.
Have a great weekend, beanies!

I watched Beauty Inside as well. I felt it could've been a lot bolder. It seemed to lack the courage of its convictions. But i suspect that some conservative folks would probably cringe at the near-almost-but-not-quite same-sex pairing that was going on in some scenes. Would've loved some racial dynamics. Funny how actress got out of bed when he became old. Ah, Beauty Inside...some missed opportunities there.

@Carole - I agree, the film seemed really in love with its concept but didn't really explore it too fully.
Though if we're talking same-sex romance, I loved Chun Woo-hee's portion as Woo-jin. That scene was written almost like a coming-out scene, and she played it perfectly.

On 200 Pounds Beauty, it was definitely Kim Ah Joong's breakout role. Watching it now, it makes me feel cringey. I guess that's why it was a hit then - it is entertaining in general. But definitely some less than ideal messages about plastic surgery and body image.

SFD is really good. The latest episode was full of intense dialogues but it kept us on the edge of our seat. The characters are interesting, to the point that I wish to see what are their 'real' master plan in their head, because I can't predict which path they will drive us along the story.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Six Flying Dragons but it's definitely not light. It went into dark character and plot territory pretty quickly and seems likely to stay there. I personally like the show's willingness to make its "heroes" ruthless and conflicted, but it might not fit your current mood.

Hello beanies...
-SASSY GO GO: Okay, I'm still confused about Hajoon's feeling. But I'll presume it's on purpose from the writer. Because mostly, I think even Hajoon himself is still confused about what he feels toward Yeondoo. Now that there are only 4 eps left, I want some Dongjae's story since the writer kind of abandoned him in the last 2 eps. I want to know why he is afraid of human touch and how he will resolves his ordeal.
-SHE WAS PRETTY: I love the way the writer handle the girls' problem. They really talk about what has gone wrong between them, apologize, and truly support each other. I am also impressed that Hari want to start anew without her father's connection anymore. Now that her problem with Hyejin all resolved, I would love to see her found a new love life.

Today I finally able to watch Sassy Go Go episode 8. Really cannot wait for next week's episode. The hug at the end, I know Seo Ha Joon is a good guy, but cant help to be a little bit disappointed with the writer *because I wished it was Kim Yeol that hug Yeon Do*. Ha Joon can have a little crush on his newfound friendship, but I dont want to see him sad later. Can Ha Joon and Yeon Doo be like best buddy or something, without anything beyond friendship? It just so heartwarming to see Kim Yeol-Yeon Do-Ha Joon's relationship.
As this drama is nearing its end, at this point everything makes me nervous especially the potential new love line/love triangle and the parents relationship.
But I dont want to see this drama to end!
p/s: Is it true next week they gonna air only one episode? Is it confirmed?

I think it's all but confirmed KBS is cancelling the Tuesday episode of Sassy Go Go for a baseball game (do they not have sports channels in Korea?! Stop interfering with my dramas!).

Tried a lot of new dramas this week.
Awl – most interesting of the lot for me. I don't expect it to be pitch-perfect but it seems to be doing different things from most kdramas, and I'm liking it so far. Fingers crossed for this one.
Bubblegum – some great, atypical characters but as I said in the recaps I'm not optimistic about how the story will play out because I can see the conflicts that the as-cliché-as-can-get moms will bring into this story. Prove me wrong drama. And don't make the second lead into a scheming love rival either please.
Samurai Sensei – was bored. I want to watch this for Kamiki Ryunosuke but Nishikido Ryo (the lead) just does zero for me.
Gisou no Fuufu – tried but immediately dropped it.
Okashi no Ie – ohhh, this is lovely slice of life. With Odagiri Joe & Ono Machiko. Very interesting characters, quite obvious that both have a more profound story hidden inside of them. My gripe about it? 20 minute episodes. Pacing ending up too fast – things that happened at the end of ep 1, I would have wanted in ep 3 of an hour-long episode. Why are the Japanese doing lots of these super-short dramas? (Seems to be a recent trend.)
Okitegami Kyoko no Biboroku – Detective drama, of the comedic type. I hope Okada Masaki keeps doing comedies, he's just so suited to them. He plays a character whose name is written with the Kanji for misfortune, so he constantly has bad luck and he's paranoid about it. It's hilarious. He meets a detective (Aragaki Yui) whose memory resets after a day. Great combo the two of them. And the crush-love-line is too cute. Good fun this drama.
Siren – Another detective/police drama, which I'm normally not into. But I'm enjoying it so far (2 eps), this one is less a serial than that has a larger story that ties everything together. It's pretty intense, and interestingly the love line is also important in this one: two cops that work together and, secretly, are also dating. They investigate cases where the same, beautiful woman keeps appearing. Really liking the couple, and Matsuzaka Tori's character especially – he strikes me as the most intelligent cop although people don't seem to have realised that yet at all but keep dismissing him. But he's picking up on the tiniest details, and I'm sensing some brilliance. Plus, as a couple the two cops seem very real.
D-Day – nothing to add that hasn't already been said. Ddolmi is love; writing is not getting even slightly better.
Tamiyou – on hold until all subs are available.

Oh, is AWL good? Is it very Misaeng? I've been wanting to watch it because I have a ji Hyun Woo crush. But was afraid it'd be pseudo-misaeng-ish.
Ooh, saw some good Korean movies the past week. The Beauty Inside, Handphone, 11 am. All very good. Beauty inside had every gorgeous actor pretty much...and several ahjusshi actors we would all recognize. Handphone..wow! Now there was a lesson in anger and repression gone wild. It's promising. It's more like Misaeng than it is like other Korean dramas, but I think it's probably better not to compare them. It's a different story. And I feel like its focus is something else – like, Misaeng was focused on one person (representative of many in a way), but Awl, well, it's a different hero, who could live easily but has a very strong conscience that makes him speak out – even when he could live comfortably, since it is others that would suffer the consequences. Meaning, there is something that questions the whole system – society – from top-down while in Misaeng, it's maybe more a single person finding their way (even if that story is significant for everyone in the same situation). I don't know if I'm explaining it well! I need to see a few more episodes to get a full sense of it tbh.

I thought you did a great job explaining. It's got a misaeng vibe in that it's about "real people, real world issues", but it's a different set of problems and a different approach. @carole McDonnell, if you are a Ji Hyun Woo fan, you should give it a chance. It may end up being his best role yet (and I say that as someone who thinks Kim Boong Do is the best Kdrama character.ever) I'm really hoping Awl accomplishes what it wants.

I watched just the first ep of Awl but I don't think it's too similar to Misaeng.
Misaeng was more about finding a way to work in that office and not loose yourself, how to fit in and remain decent. :) Awl is more black and white and tries to talk about when it is just not possible to not fight the system.
The other thing I like is that I watched 20 eps of Misaeng and never really understood Jang GeuRae while Awl used really long flashbacks and voice over to explain the main guy background and personality.
Give it a chance. :)

Awl - I liked the first ep very much, I love lone fighter stories and I was very glad our hero is a complex guy who understands the trouble he can get into but can't sell out even when he wished to do it.
Bubblegum - I was surprised to like this but I'm still not sold on the male lead, yesterday I was watching the first scenes of second ep and he was so over the top. I know he is over protective and unconsciously jealousy but raiding a stranger house that way was too childish. If he was 15 maybe.
Can I ask where do you watch the jdramas? Okitegami seems fun but I don't watch them online, the stream is not stable enough for that.
I'm still watching Wakamono Tachi and though I really like the story it is going slower than it should I think it's because the nursery bit, I don't understand the doctor and I feel bad about the sister using the babies to make up for her anxiety and loneliness. Asa-ni keeps screaming too much but I'm used to it. :)
I've finished Kingyo Club and it was lovely apart from the noble idiocy the girl committed in the last ep. but it was resolved quickly. :)

I really hope Awl continues to be good.
Yes, raiding the house in Bubblegum was rather childish. I like that the lead is genuinely nice, but it can go over the top. I won't give this drama much time – not actors I'm interested in and if the story starts being the same-as-ever I'll be out.
The cheating doctor in Wakamono Tachi? Can't stand that guy. Some issues with the sister too, although I love the actress.
I didn't even see it as nobly idiocy in Kingyo Club. At least in her case, we can blame her age – she's so young and vulnerable and probably just saw no other choice. But Haru is wonderful, fortunately. Wonderfully sensitive and strong. Just what Koto needs. (I shipped them more than I shipped many adult couples in dramas!)

Yes, the cheating doctor, don't get that guy. I'm still on ep 6 maybe he will leave the story? :) I love the actress too, she is the same I think from Soredemo also with Eita, they are both incredible, I wish kdramas had actors like that. Not sure if it's just a feeling but Japanese actors seem to understand realism, and subtleness much more than korean actors. I get it when it's a theatrical thing or crazy makjang but I don't like when it's a realistic story.

October 30, 2015 at 9:17 AM
The cheating doctor is --------! I find him creepy. No, I'm afraid he's there until the end. Yes, it's Mitsushima Hikari from Soredemo. Wakamono tachi is a perfect example of those dramas that make me wish kdramas had actors/casts like that. Mitsushima, Eita, really all of them are either phenomenal or very very good. Kdramas don't do casts like that – there are some very good actors, but casts are so mixed, with many weaker people in the bunch. (Of course there are terribly cast jdramas too.)
I think the difference might be that even the best j-actors do dramas as well as films, while the best of Korean actors stick to film or, if they start in dramas, eventually abandon them for films. Someone like Bae Doona absolutely is as good as Mitsushima, but I really can't blame Bae to doing films – better conditions but also much more interesting & varied roles.

I couldnt agree more about Siren, i loved the first ep.
The leads are great combo as asskicking, smart cops and really good, nice couple in their relationship. I like the male lead Satomi who is so booksmart, too clever as a cop for his shallow boss, coworkers. I hope they see his theories about the serial killers. Man the guy should be a profiler, a leader of detective team and not follow foolish cops.
I like how different Yuki, the female lead is from the male lead, she is less serious, more fun of the two. She is realisticly flawed in not seeing Kara being dangerous, after her. I like that she is a talented cop too.

Right? There is something about this drama that really works so far – and with a dozen of detective/police shows airing in Japan each year, that's something.
Satomi is booksmart, but he also as an incredibly keen sense of hearing and smell. A real gem in the midst of those bigmouthed cops and they haven't realised it at all. In fact, I think even viewers could easily miss this – his brilliance is very subtly inserted into the show.
Yuki is great too. I like that she's ambitious and driven (she'll fearlessly throw herself in the midst of things, and I get the impression she's much more set on entering the 1st division than Satomi – it's her goal, while for Satomi it's seems more like if Yuki makes it, that's good enough for him. He'll just humbly continue his way, even if he gets no recognition.).
They complement each other well too! (I so ship them, perhaps because they seem so natural in the way they interact as a couple.)

Hello all:
Hope everyone is doing well.
Had an interesting time at ESL. We talked about the lifting of the one-child policy. The Chinese women were mockingly against the lifting of the band. The Korean, American, and Japanese folks were for it. The Chinese women talked about it being an economic issue and one lady assured everyone that she only had her second child (they migrated to then lived in Singapore and now in the US) because her first child wanted a sibling. The rest of us were like: The ban on more than one children caused an imbalanced population with more boys than women. There was a rise in female infanticide (before and after birth), there were disabled children cast away, there were forced abortions on women who got pregnant with a second child, there was a rise in brothels, rapes, and female kidnappings, there was a generation of only children who lived alone with no equal to talk to and who spent tons of times in internet cafes because they only had stressing parents at home, there is a whole generation of kids who have to take care of dying parents and dying grandparents. And the Chinese women looked shocked. Clueless. As if they had never heard all of that. Very interesting.
She was pretty: What the heck is going on with the plot? Shouldn’t this show end at 12 episodes? I seriously do not want any extra muddling through pseudo-drama going on. Is this all about the magazine now? Or about the girls’ friendship? Or is our heroine fated for rich chaebol? Then the writers should’ve woven the plot better. Yeah, everyone's being honest and all but there just seems to be no pressing/suspenseful plot thread to hold onto. Does heroine have to learn to stop being there for our wounded litte boy? (or for any of her friends, for that matter?)
Glamorous Temptation: Quite seriously the BEST makjang I’ve seen in ages. The heroine is smart, the hero and heroine are communicating somewhat. And even though the heroine is doing something brave and dangerous, we know she has no other chance to do it. Plus all the back..stories are worthy of exploring. And the themes and sub-themes of obsession, self-deception, delusion, self-righteousness in the face of guilt, self-recrimination, false guilt, true guilt, and flat-out wrong judgment….oh I am in makjang heaven. When a makjang is good, it is really good! This is my drama crack
Flying Dragons: Oh my! The gravitas just gets more and more gravitasy. Yoo Ah in is seriously sexy. The love story is wonderful…slow moving but organic. Love our little wanna be swordsman. Waiting for my Byun Yo Han to show up. Great cast all around. Do I hear award season calling?
All About Mom: Am firmly hooked on this story. So many lies, so many unfoldings of truth and lies. I had hoped hero’s mom would give heroine more of a benefit of the doubt. And I suppose the writer showed her as trying to be fair but yeah…she’s too wounded by life to be fair when it comes to losing her son, especially to a...

oops! Here's the rest:
especially to a woman who might be a flower snake.
Village: Dear me! Here is a show I’m watching and will always watch but seriously…the actress is getting to me. Why all that mopiness? Is it the director messing up her skillz? Love the young cop. Heck, I love both cops. They’re the ones who keep me watching.
I gave up on D-Day. Am I missing out?
All is well: Anyone watching this? Is this being subbed anywhere? I’m way too concerned about this to let it go but I seriously do not want to endure the second lead viciousness for 80 more episodes. Therefore I will occasionally ask for some sweet soul to give me a recap.
Have a great weekend, all.

@Carole Glad at least I'm not the only one to think what the heck with MGY.. It feels her acting is regressed and actually she's hardly involved in the case (I watched up to ep 6). I love both cops and Agasshi, but I still wary of him because he's the walnut guy. Heck, the entire population of Achiara are creepy and suspicious. I won't be surprised Kim Hye Jin is not the first murder victim at the supposedly "crime-less village".

Hi Kanz and korfan, I've heard she is a good actress and she was good in Alice (i think that was she) but here...i'm just gonna blame the director. It's as if when a director tells an actress to do sad, he makes her do that ONE emotion al through the drama. Witness Yongpal..where..seriously..that poor actress was stuck on STUCK. I think it's the PD.

That entire village is just weird. Though not sure you could call it a "village" - just going by the street scenes etc I would guess population in the 5-10K range. But it seems like all the ones that are actually part of the "village" are a subset that live in their own little world.

Funny you should mention the actress in Village. ....... I just started watching it this week and, while I'm still on the fence about it, I will share that my mom also started watching it and she asked, "That lead actress, is she new, just starting her acting career?"
Clearly, it seems MGY is not making the best of impressions unfortunately.

I don't mind the romance – it's one of the better parts of D-Day. I don't think the kiss was out of place or anything – spending time together 24/7 in a very intense situation can lead to that.
But, I also don't think it was deep, meaningful, you-are-the-one sort of kiss – it's the kind of romance that would possibly run its course very quickly (i.e. breaking up within a month or two) since they barely know each other (even if they do seem suited to one another). Pretty sure the drama will tell us otherwise of course...

All this drama seems to be at this point is a couple of doctors sparring with each other, one spouting why an operation ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT BE DONE, another why an operation ABSOLUTELY MUST BE DONE. It's a like a broken record at this point.

I was wondering about She Was Pretty as well. Where are we going with the plot? Do they marry and then he dies and so she ends up with second lead in the end? We'd need a time skip for that.
Also, All About My Mom, ditto on how cruel the CEO is being to Ji Na. It makes no sense since she was treated the same way in the past. I love that the youngest brother & girlfriend got caught by daddy. Can't wait to see that fury get unleashed. How will mom intervene in that situation?

Glad to see you back here! On the shock that the chinese women saw: I think it could be because in the west we learn all the negative happeneings, while they don't see them as muh in general in china. I learned a lot of new things about it when I was there that I never knew before.
Also, there has been changes to the policy for quite a while. For instance, in remote villages people have been able to have more than one child if the first was a girl for a long time, to cut down on female children being abandoned. They also opened for the girls inheriting on the same level as boys to do the same. (similarly doctors are not allowed to do scans to find out a baby's gender or tell the parents the gender to stop pragnacies from being terminated because it's a girl). It's still not ideal, but they have been trying.
Along with that, people from single child families have been able for some years to have 2 children without consequences (paying a fine), like one of the teachers I worked with. So the lift of the ban hs been a longe process.

I think it's going to be complicated – it's not just an issue of changing laws, but a lot of other, very ingrained ideas.
A few months back, I read this piece from a journalist (Carrie Gracie) on the BBC website – it follows a rural Chinese family over many years. They have two children, a girl, and a boy. The girl is older. What struck me in particular is how the girl is given all the responsibilities, while the boy is like a little prince – obviously reflecting cultural attitudes. Amazingly, the girl can do anything and in many ways has more freedom than the boy, while the boy is completely dependent on others, and 'imprisoned'.
It's a fascinating read – it raises many questions, to which there may be no one answer.

Oh definitively won't be easy. I mean one woan I worked with told us she was so relieeved that her baby was a boy, because that meant that the in-laws were fully happy with her.
That sounds like an interesting read! Like with everything, it's always a danger with generalisation. What I wanted to point out was just that there were more sides to the case (along with attitudes) that I discovered when I got there, that I never heard about in western press in regards to the one-child policy, and it's development over the resent years.

@ Carole, actually i do understand the Chinese women's point on it being an economic issue, because compared to the late 1970s when the policy was implemented, it is much more expensive to raise a child in present day China. Not to mention that she belongs to a generation that has come to accept the one child policy as normal.
And attitudes have been changing all the while. People in the past have been accustomed to large families, but as China became more urbanized, their concerns became more developed world like - health, housing and jobs. Having a boy is good for carrying nthe family name, but daughters are observed to be better in caring for parents when they get old.

The Chinese women in the class just sounded like pretend sophisticates to me. As if they were speaking in a way they expected Western middle class folks to understand. Can't describe it but I've seen this kind of odd need to impress westerners by how western they are. I think I'm clued in enough to feel pretense and pretension a mile away. And that's how this came off to us..as if we (Japanese, Korean American) were an audience and they were presenting a facade to us. It just felt very odd..as if they didn't know what the rest of the world knew or they had been trained to give a particular answer to a particular udience. The nearest description is the feeling on egets when watching a Chinese drama...where the actors seem "aware" of being "watched" and create mugging self-consciiiously acting characters.

November 1, 2015 at 11:55 AM
Funny you should mention the whole idea of it all being a big facade, because that is exactly the same impression I get from hearing many mainland Chinese women talk. (never notice that from Taiwan or Hong Kong). It is almost like they are in a permanent state of denial.

It seems like many Chinese are blissfully unaware of all the problems caused by the one-child policy, and/or choose to totally ignore all the issues it has brought up.
China currently has 37 million more women than men - a ratio of 1:1.18 - the highest in the world. It is so bad in some areas that brokers are bringing in women from Laos, Thailand, even North Korea (read human trafficking), but it is nowhere near enough to cover the shortfall. Simple fact is, there are over 35 million males that will never get married.
The demographics in China are totally skewed, and in the long run will cause some really serious issues - possibly to the point where the CCP will finally collapse.

I totally understand you. I was in limbo for few weeks after IRY, just cannot move on. I rewatched it once too and a lot of things make more sense after grasping the big picture. That ending left huge question mark though and I really hope for a second season. can someone just hire SIG again in a drama like soon ish??
I am currenly watching 20 again - after taking a glimpse of DB recap, I expected this to be better. I am currently on episode 6 and I havent found this to be addictive. Its a light watch and everyone looks pretty, but I cannot stand Nora`s character. I get why she cannot stand up for herself and why people are treating her like a doormat (it is like cycle, she never speaks up so people thought it is ok to treat her that way) but gosh I cheered so much when the hiphop dancer stands up for her to the rest of the class.
This drama is actually borderline makjang ish (the character, narrative, the plot - wrong cancer verdict going on for 5 episodes??) but I have to give credit for the director for making the tone to be light and inserting humour here and there.

Just like several makjang drama that always lure me back to them when I'm lost and long for a heart tugging-twisting-wrenching romance, such as Thorn Birds, Secret, Angel Eyes and Bad Love *coughs*
I'm dl-ing Nirvana in Fire at the moment, since several of friends mentioned it above. Read the review, it is good, some say even better than BBJX. So yes, I'm intrigued and will watch it once done dl-ing. Hopefully it'll cure my restlessness and drama crisis. ^^

I recently found Korean drama...and have almost lost my life... I didn't quite expect the effect! I had marathoned Taiwanese show last time but not to this level.
Being new the scene, it's been a bit like discovering a whole new author and having to read everything in the back catalogue. So in a short space of time, I've watched these:
Boys Over Flowers
City Hunter
Coffee Prince
Faith
Fated to Love You
Flower Boys Next Door
Flower Boys Ramen Shop
Healer
Heirs
I Hear Your Voice
It's Okay, It's Love
Kill Me, Heal Me
Marriage, Not Dating
Master's Sun
Me Too, Flower
Personal Taste
Pinocchio
Secret
Secret Garden
School 2014
Shine, or Go Crazy
Sungkyunkwan Scandal
Witch's Romance
Tried these but couldn't finish them
Doctor Stranger
Dream High
The Time I Loved You
Currently watching She was Pretty, Good Times, Love Me If You Dare and Sassy Go Go.
SWP has been really funny. I'm a fan of the lead actress since Kill Me, Heal Me, But Reporter Kim kills me - his comic timing and craziness are fantastic. But it does feel like the story has lost its pacing somewhat...Good Times - I'm not sure why I'm watching this..the acting's quite natural so it feels slice of life...very slow burn though...I'm really liking Love Me If You Dare. It's dark and funny - and the lead character is hilariously odd. Sassy Go Go - I adore. Reminds of all that high school idealism...
When I've finished the good shows... I'll get my life back, right? Right??!

I actually loved My love from the Stars because of the female lead. Her acting, though over-the-top, was hilarious. I particularly love the scene (possible SPOILER here if you want to continue with the show) where she goes through 5 stages of grief after getting rejected. It's the same reason I loved I Hear Your Voice. Strong female leads make me so so happy. Obviously it is not a reflection on Kim Soo Hyun or Lee Jong Suk, both of whom I really adore.

There's only one drama I'm really into these days, and somehow I don't feel like watching anything else for the week after it's done..... which is how I've ended up dumping my remaining dramas and just spending the week re-watching Sassy Go Go. (I am long past high school age, but it's just so good. Best high school drama since School 2013)
The thing I really enjoy about the drama is that even though the plot is nothing new - kids have to win a competition while dealing with their own problems - the execution constantly surprises me. It's sneakily upended/discarded quite a few tropes in its romance/lead characters already (Yeon-doo's relative normalcy, Yeol's niceness as a main lead and the fact that he never attempts to hide or deny his attraction to her are just a few examples), but this week's episodes brought a turn of events that I was dreading and hoping wouldn't happen, and somehow managed to make me not hate it.
(no prizes for guessing this was about Ha-joon and Yeon-doo......I was dreading the effect of this potentially ruining the bromance, but Ji-soo plays it in a rather interesting way - like Ha-joon doesn't know what his new feelings could mean, or how they're separate from the feeling of having a new friend who's not Yeol).
and I'm still freaking out a little inside over the fact that Ha-joon's bookshelf contains Harry Potter ♥♥♥♥♥♥ For some things, my inner fangirl will never die.

oh, and I have to give props to all the actors here, who are pitch-perfect in their roles with not even one striking a bum note (not even N, whom I was so harsh on at the beginning). This is not a School 2015 situation, where one actor's woodenness basically kills any feeling you might have for his character - no Nam Joo-hyuks in this drama!
I love that everyone here has woken up to the sheer charm of Lee Won-geun and his smiles, and of course Ji-soo who can rip us up with just a look, but I want to give special props to Jung Eun-ji and Chae Soo-bin, who both have far more difficult tasks than they'd seem on first sight. Eunji for the sheer ease with which (as @Zoe said) she makes a character who could come off as a put-on, self-righteous Standard Plucky Kdrama Girl seem so utterly natural and charming. I love that it's so totally believable that every boy around (ok, two) would fall in love with her - not because the script says so, but because it's so easy to see from her performance what Yeon-doo's appeal is. And Chae Soo-bin for nailing that mixture of roiling desperation, vulnerability, spite and anger that make up Soo-ah, along with the compulsion to seek her mother's approval. She makes a great villain, and an even scarier one because she's so fragile, and so close to cracking under the weight of her mother's expectations. That's much more terrifying (and also sad) than just some standard bitch on a power trip.

yeah, KBS really dropped the ball on promoting this one - it could have done so much better if the early teasers had shown us this was more than just the fluffy, silly high school drama they promised.
But it's SO much better than anything I've seen since the end of Heard It Through the Grapevine. Way better than any fluffy high school show with no promo has a right to be (it's tanking its ratings, and that breaks my heart)

October 30, 2015 at 9:35 AM
@ktiep - I think the real trouble is that KBS didn't market this one at all - not so much as a variety show appearance from a cast member, hardly any major magazine interviews, nothing.
They've been tanking that Monday-Tuesday slot for most of this year, and putting a mostly-rookie cast with no big names (Jung Eun-ji is the most recognisable member of the cast, followed probably by Ji-soo - charming and adorable, but still rookies in the public eye), no superstar writer, not an adaptation of any major foreign manga/drama......this was pretty much KBS putting up the white flag and accepting that its drama was cannon fodder to go up against the more serious and glamourous dramas from SBS and MBC.
It's just our luck that this turned out to be so good.

The kind of attention that goes into framing certain shots is kind of amazing, especially considering the live shoot conditions. And to establishing background in general - there's so much minor character stuff happening that's not in direct focus (like the way Yeol and Ha-joon always stick together, or how they initially slid all the way out of their group and into Yeon-doo's, separated from their club at the drunken party in episode 4-5)

There's a chance US viewers might not recognise it, because what Ha-joon has is the UK edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (bright yellow spine).
I admit, I stared REALLY hard at his bookshelf after that, trying to figure out whether there were other Harry Potter books there too (you know he can't just have #5 in the series) but didn't find any!

hello people! Happy Friday and happy halloween tomorrow for those clebrating that! (I might vote for turning off the Lamp outside our door to escape it all).
It's so cold here! We had the first snow fall on monday and tuesday. Then rain on wednesday. Comence ice and terribleness (I sliped down the staircase due to ice. So much pain).
Still jobbless, have contacted people but so far no luck. And doing substitution work in some kindergartens though, which is nice. So different from China though.
Dramaland:
GARO! I love this show, even though the CGI at times is terrible and everything. I wanna be a makai priest! (only because women can't be makai knights... *sad*)
Fallen behind on everything else in dramaland again. Its like I am in a slump, where the problem isn't that there is anything to see, I just can't get around to it.

Hey Manin! Good luck with the job search, and it's nice to hear you're working with children again. I'll never forget Kdrama, Toddler Style - I wonder if your current kids are quite as kdrama-like?
I hear you on the slump. I have all of one drama I'm into, but I'm not optimistic about what to watch after it ends. Will probably investigate more jdrama or cdrama, then.

Haha, I need to find all the Kdrama toddler style posts again so I can read them myself! miss those kids a lot. I get picture updates every now and them. They are growing up so fast!
Current kids are a bit less kdrama-like. Though they do have their moments: girl A: "do you want to play on the swing together?", boy B: "sure!" Girl C: "why are you playing together? Are you guys boyfriend and girlfriend?", "Boy B: "Yes! Why else would I play with her and not you?" (if only drama leads could be so straight forward)

lol yeah, I suppose it's pretty obvious what drama I'm into right now! (it has high schoolers, and quite surprisingly they don't behave like toddlers!) Wish I could help with the job hunt, but I'm in India and all our history graduates seem to end up working in the media, for some reason.
The current kids sound like they are sensible, but would need only a small nudge to be in kdrama territory :)

Hm, media job. I can see how that comes aobut :p
Haha yes, they are lacking the dramatics of a kdrama yet. We did have some fighting the other day. But again not quite dramaland territory. I do feel like I a less likely to find kdrama toddler moments here though. Because kids act different from country to country. I will however keep a look out ;)

No snow here, in fact, it's going to be so hot these next two days that I think the Halloween candy is going to melt. Heh. ...... But we're turning off the outside light also. Sometimes, turning it off is the best thing to do.

Wow tht's hot! There it would only melt because I have controll of the fire place. Which means everyone else complain tht it is hot when I find a nice temprature (on the other hand I bring in my own wood so no one can complain)
Yeah, I always wondered if other places had that rule too. That turning off the lights means that people shouldn't go there to ask for candy.

Hi Everyone and Happy Weekend.
It's my daughter's birthday today and mine tomorrow, and it's Halloween as well. I'd like to imagine ? celebrating ? both in my witch mode, by taking off in my magic flying cauldron around my neighborhood, and collecting ? treats ? that our friends throw into our cauldron from their windows. We'll have a fun ? party ? with assorted ? candies ? ? and cauldron conjured ? cake. :D
In actual fact we did have a simple cake ? and the kids tried wine ??? for the first time. They said it tasted horrible but took more than one sip! LOL, so I guess the taste will grow on them.
= = =
I noticed in last week's DB Spill the Beans article, presumably after reading that the Singapore Beanies were in a Whatsapp Group, that a few persons were interested in being in Whatsapp groups of Beanies too, but grouped according to their country. So I thought I'd just put out this question to you on OT... would you be interested to be in a Google Group if I started it?
I'm crazy... I'm actually busy myself, but I like the concept of people of like-mind coming together and maybe, becoming friends and growing into community. And why not an international bunch of us who like kdrama? All it takes is one initiative and a bit of work, and the group should take off (or not) on it's own.
What this offers:
1) The chance to enter into discussions with other Beanies. Note: the same commenting policy that we have here in DB would apply in the Google Group.
http://www.dramabeans.com/2013/07/introducing-our-dramabeans-commenting-policy/
http://www.dramabeans.com/about/commenting-policy/
2) It would be a place where we can organize discussions by topics and with tags, and cover any subject of interest to us.
3) It would give those who want to be in chat groups by country, a chance to exchange their contact numbers or emails to make that happen
4) We would not have to wait for a Friday/Saturday to chat on OT, but be able to chat in this group, anytime.
At the moment, there are some of us already in the Healer Lovers Google Group that was formed I believe in February this year, and we're still coming and going and doing fine. So I'm proposing a new group, like an OT group, not limited to just one show but open to any topic.
Being a smaller grouping and not open to the public, we will be asked a few bits of info about ourselves, and beyond that, it's up to us if we want to share more with each other. If this is agreeable to you, and you'd like to try this group, please email me: [email protected].
Disclaimer: I reserve the right to end this project should this offer be abused. I will only be able to work as fast as I have the time, therefore your patience will be required.
So, what do you think??? :)

Thank you @Manin! Yes, the group is like a bunch of us getting together anytime and leaving our thoughts for several people, who may be more in tune with us, and who are then more likely to respond.
I was considering that not every show we want to watch and discuss will be reviewed or recapped, therefore, maybe some of us who are watching the same show could have "company" to watch and discuss with, outside of DB or specific blog sites, by being in an independent group. :)

@Lixie, Thanks!
Yes, something like Yahoo Groups. I find that Yahoo Groups (in the groups that I've been) is used more for the sharing of files, although discussions can also take place there.
Google Groups gives the choice to have posts going out to the group and replies coming to both one's email and to the group, or only to the group.
It's about the same as being on OT, except that it's a smaller group of people, and each person can start a topic which 'hopefully' gets related responses together on a thread of it's own, and each thread can go on for a long time without posts getting 'lost'.

To add on about the Google Group ...
Since it will be an independent discussion(s) group, that I'm proposing and offering only from DB, I suggested that the commenting policy follow DB's,.... however, since the Group is not a DB group in any other way, it will only follow the policy where applicable and not in totality.
We may also have our own little rules along the way.
The idea is that there are some of us who would like to get together, and maybe in a smaller group, even those of us who lurk may like to chat. The desire to be in a group is now and then expressed on the DB threads, but it's 'risky' for individuals to start anything in a public blog, so nothing happens after that. The reason I don't mind (so far, but that can change! LOL) is that the Gmail spam filter is good and the people who have come on board with the Healer Lovers group, have been genuine and great people, and we've even become friends. I think that's lovely, and we could have more international, nice communities, starting with something we like in common... dramas, for instance! :)

So I'm re-watching Marriage Not Dating again and I totally miss Han Groo!!!!! When is this girl coming back to drama....
Other's I'm watching:
Bubblegum - I'm really liking this. The tone reminds me of Heart to Heart...it's easy and breezy, and yes there are cliched characters (not one, but TWO chaebol-ish moms!) but I still like it
Sassy Go Go - why!! Why must there be a love triangle and why must our little Ji Soo be the one who will be heart broken!? (I mean, c'mon, we all know he won't get the girl)
She Was Pretty - okay so I'm a little miffed. I still like the show, but I'm missing that initial chemistry now that they're "together". Does anyone else feel this way? Like there was so much "tension" before the reveal. Also, what else is there left to do for 4 more episodes because bring the magazine up to #1 and figure out who the chaebol heir is (which we already know)?
Glamorous Temptation - OOOOHHHHH MAN. If a creepy dude called me up and randomly instructed me to sneak into houses and look through libraries I'd probably laugh and think how creative teens are with their prank calls these days haha Okay, I know it's drama and I know our female lead has only ONE (seemingly) chance to figure out things but C'MON. (I'm still watching though!)

Hello Beanies! Yet another Friday with not a lot of time, but who's complaining. I love to be busy. BTW, it is an absolutely GORGEOUS fall day here in the Sierra Mountains of California. And it's supposed to snow 15" on Monday. Yahoo!
Watching:
Sassy Go Go--have to admit, I skipped a couple of weeks to let the story progress a bit before I jumped in. So I was surprised to see how far the relationships had progressed since the start. I'm enjoying it now, but at a slow pace. Takes me a couple of nights to watch one episode.
She Was Pretty--Did I ever tell you about my crush on Park Seo-joon? Sure, he's young enough to be my son, but I can be a cougar, right? He's playing this role to a t. Both a control freak and a wounded animal. In terms of the writing, I wondered why he felt so abandoned at the end of the last episode. I would have been more ticked off. And how is it that he thinks by getting married that she will stay by his side?
All About My Mom--I know not many on her are watching this drama, but this past week the ratings were 31%. 31% people! The acting is spot on. I especially appreciated the lawyer son's secretary's acting this past week. She's such a mixture of dingy, sweet, and when she is terrified, OMG, so good. Like the sister-in-law in Healer in the wheelchair. I just wish the Oh Min Suk would come and hug me when I was terrified. But alas, I come from a long line of "strong women," so that would go against me nature and, of course, my husband would just wonder why I was acting so helpless. Ha ha.
We Got Married--Still obsessed. Min Suk and Yewon--are they a real couple? Is that all acting? He is sooo into her. I would be too. I want her as a friend.
Kwak Si-Yang & Kim So-yeon--Still too early in the relationship to see where it will go. She is so inexperienced. I never expected that from an actress. He, on the other hand, is way too good for her. So far, it's all him. He cooks, he entertains, he brings the activities. She'd better step up, or this will get boring.
That's it. Off to an interview. I'm thinking of training to be a Master Food Preserver and teaching classes in food dehydrating for backpacking. We'll see... maybe I can work in some Korean yummies.

LOL. Yes, you can be a cougar dear.. Thankfully, in KDland, you can be anything you want. Up to this day I still feel guilty admiring YSH, although he's officially baby jail bait no more and he can't even be my son, the tinge of guilt is there. It's because I watched him act since tiny baby in Love Letter. Since portraying King of Heaven in Arang, he transformed into such a fine young man.. *sigh*

So far in my kdrama career I've watched 20 dramas. These go from the classics like Full House and Kim Sam Soon to current ones like She Was Pretty. Last week I decided to give Fated to Love you a try, and it was the first drama I simply could not finish. I got to episode 13 and after that I couldn't take it anymore. As much as I loved the leads, the plot made no sense and was dragging. It made me realize a major lesson in the kdrama life: cute moments cannot make up for a messy plot.

Hello everyone, how are you? Is Halloween a big deal where you are? At home we don't celebrate it, but I'm curious to see what other people do.
Still recovering from this never ending flu, it's a shame there's no one rushing to make me porrigde or caress my forehead in the style of a kdrama. Unfortunately the porridge and cold towels have been replaced by copious amounts of vix and cough syrup.
Managed to apply for few jobs this week, hopefully I start working soon. Good luck manin with your job search!
Dramas:
She was pretty - last few episodes have felt quite flat. Glad to see Ha-ri is trying to change and face up to things. Hopefully next week's episode will be better.
Moon river- so sad the show has ended! Really enjoyed each episodes and how strong Xiao Xi was as a character. The hugs though, very moving. It's a shame we couldn't see more of how Xiao Xi changed the school or less of the revenge plot.
Bromance - Megan lui is so cool, I was questioning myself through both episodes if she is a guy or girl. Amazing, she had the mannerisms down perfectly. Although I can't take the show seriously. The male lead does this pouty face or is he constantly breathing in , whatever it is
Very distracting.

All about my mom- so excited for this week's episode. Everything is finally out! Poor chae-ri and heung-soo, the father is going to kill him..what were they thinking. Do you think the maknae couple will last, isn't is a faux pas to have in laws within in laws. If Eugene marries engineer kang, then surely they won't be allowed to get together?
Lawyer couple are the best by far, please writers extend their scenes!
CEO is unprofessional, so much for her cool mom ideology. Although I think jin ah should have put in a request for a job change after everything was revealed.
We got married. Oh yeah couple are grand! Surely they can't be acting, it really feels lie they are a couple outside if the show. That episode where they were lying on each other, It seemed like such an intimate moment and the fact the staff had to knock on the door must have been a warning .
Beauty inside, I watched halfway because my computer kept on crashing. It was based on a Facebook Web series right. Planning to try again this weekend.
Kiss me Thai - I was wrong in last week's ot. Think I was too hasty, now that king knows and the other characters are moving in place. It doesn't feel boring. I really like how the audience get a clearer picture of tent's feelings.

Here Halloween became a thing maybe 10 years ago, and it's being celebrated more and more, especially among children. Howeve, my family doesn't really celebrate it. We also have a rule that if the lights on the outside of a house is turned off, people are not allowed to go trick-or-treating there.

Hi Saki -
I live in the American Midwest and experience the standard US Halloween. Children dress up and go from house to house to collect candy and now adults dress up and go to parties and people decorate their houses and it's a big deal.
Children saying "Trick or Treat!" means, more or less, give us treats or we will play a trick on you. This is a pretty empty threat and rarely (but could!)leads to eggs or paint being thrown or similar petty vandalism. However, I write because I live in St Louis, where the phrase has somehow come to mean that the children first perform a "trick" and then receive the treat. They might sing or dance but 99.9% of kids tell a joke, and it becomes a really fun time for everyone. The jokes are about what you'd expect from 5-12 year olds, so the good ones shine like gems!
I've never met any other Americans from cities with this tradition, so I wanted to tell everyone about it.
The typical Halloween doorway transaction of:
-"Trick or Treat!"
-"Here you go! Oh, you're a vampire!(Elsa/Ninja Turtle/etc)"
-"Thaaaaank yoooou!" (trails off as they run to next house)
is changed while everyone is laughing and commenting on the joke, the costumes, the fact that they forgot the punchline or any of many funny things that happen. It's a blast!
I recommend it highly to all other towns and cities ?

Wow, that sounds amazing! I knew Christmas and thanksgiving were a huge celebration but I didn't expect Halloween would be the same kind of thing. If only I was a kid again, it must be really fun for everyone and for the community. I hope tomorrow's turn out is good, would be great to see more towns embracing it!
Happy Halloween! Thank you for sharing your tradition, my joke would be:
Why didn't the skeleton go to the ball?
- because he had no body to go with.
Not very funny unfortunately, but it was the only Halloween themed joke my sister and I could come up with!

Happy OT everybody. I'm watching the most number of dramas at once now, which is a first in my entire drama-watching life.
She Was Pretty: I love this show so much I can't even begin to explain. I'm having the second worst case of second lead syndrom after I Need Romance 2012. It's not that I don't think Sung-joon and Hye-jin belong together, they are so ridiculously cute it's sickening, for some reason Si-won's character just means so much more to me and I'm not even a fan of Choi Si-won. A few times I facepalmed at some ridiculous things, like when Hye-jin chased Sung-joon around trying to catch him when it would have been easier to just call his phone, but overall this is shaping up to be one of my favourite dramas of the year. Hwang Jung-eum is seriously the bees-knees. I love her so much, and with every character she lays my love for her just keeps on growing. She's such an amazing actress, hilarious, cute, beautiful and so talented. I think I might have a girl-crush.
D-Day: I cried. This week's episodes were so sad and depressing. I'm really irritated by all the hospital politics and by Director Park and those idiot doctors, seriously where is a truck of doom when you need one? This is my favourite Jung So-min character, she's awesome, speaks wisdom and is an amazing human being. I also think Kim Young-kwang is a pretty capable actor, he is the best in his model-turned-actor friend circle in my opinion.
Bubblegum: I started this and while the first episode was funny and interesting, I suddenly lost interest in the second episode because everything became so serious and boring. This is also the first time I'm having second female lead syndrome. I already like Park Hee-von's character a lot more than the main lead female and I'm rooting for her to end up with the cute Eastern medicine doctor even though I know that will never happen. I was hoping this would be the drama that made me like Jung Ryeo-won, but sadly it's not. She reminds me of Jung Yumi's characters in both I Need Romance and Discovery of Romance and that is never a good thing since I despise both women with a fiery passion. I will probably keep watching for the second lead female and all the adorable and funny side characters, it also doesn't help that Lee Dong-wook and JUng Ryeo-won don't seem to have a lovers' kind of chemistry. I can't buy a romance between them.
I Have A Lover: Four episodes in and I'm already bored. I started this because a friend of mine is watching and I wanted to be able to discuss it with her but I'm barely able to stomach anymore after episode four. I'm thinking of skipping to episode ten since I hear that's where it starts to get good but I'm afraid I might miss something. The drama doesn't inspire any kind of emotion in me and that's usually a sign that I will end up hating the show.
Contd....

I got cut off.
I Remember You: I'm not sure if something is wrong with me, but I feel absolutely bored by this show, I think I quit half-way through the fourth episode. THe charcaters are kind of boring, it's not my kind of show at all.
Sassy Go Go: The writers seem to want to go there with the boys, i don't want them fghting for the affections of the same girl, their friendship is too adorable and I don't want Yeol and yeon-doo to become step-siblings, this show is not a makjang melo, okay? Soo-ah has completely fallen from grace, I don't know what she can do to redeem herself but I'm not sure I want her to. THe writer probably will redeem her though.
THinking of starting Village. Is it any good?

I wish there was a limit to how long one can campaign in an election here. Two weeks before the election should be enough. If you can't get who you are and what your corporate overlords want you to pretend to stand for out there in two weeks in today's world, then you're not qualified to be president.
On a similar but unrelated note I've decided to become a republican and run for president, because I too can say crazy stuff.
Sassy Go,Go- I love this drama. It's a pity Koreans aren't watching it since it's so much better than anything else right now. Personally even if you can't really relate I'd still recommend it because Jung Eun-ji, Chae Soo-bin and the boys are just wonderful.
The Village- I'm behind, I just watched episode 4, but I'm starting to really enjoy it.
Bubblegum- I liked the first two episodes but I see potential for it to go all makjang, and melo, and annoying. Also what kind of sane adult thinks it's a good idea to trespass into someone elses home.
Because it's the First Time- I really like this it's probably my second favorite drama right now. There's an honesty and truthiness to it, at times, that's hard to find. Like at the end of episode 1 right after Song-yi's mom leaves and she's walking on the bridge. Is anyone else watching?

Oh finally someone who is watching Because It's the First Time. I love that this show is quite realistic and yet doesn't let go of romanticism. The cinematography is beautiful. It feels like I am watching an art piece done by a young happy artist. Did you notice how colorful the show is?
All in all,I am really loving this show. Plus Choi Min Ho is finally acting a little. And the 2nd lead (Ha NoRa's son from 20A) is quite good. Waiting for more. :)

I'm watching Because Its the First Time too. It's kind of annoying that Dramafever is combining 2-3 eps into one and dropping it once a week. It would be more convenient to watch it in the individual chapter format. I'm actually using it as a time-filler like it's intended.

These are the few I really thought were quite unique- I Remember You, Liar Game, White Christmas, Marriage Not Dating(there is no other drama as funny as this one). There might be more but these come to mind right now.

Try Yoona's Street. Really different from any drama I've seen. Very realistic, explains Korean culture too. Acting is superb and wonderful ensemble. Heroine is a pickpocket, no princess. Doesn't wear heels and dresses up like normal world people do.

Well, to be honest, she's a Pickpocket Princess. But, yes, it's a little bit different and one of the very few shows with focus in Korean morality that isn't thoroughly disgusting.

My feels for Dragons still going strong.
I haven't watched the latest episodes of SWP and saw an article about them not sure yet if it's going to be happy or tragic ending. What? Going to read recaps from here on then.
Anyone watching Awl? Is it good?
Happy Halloween, everyone!

That's interesting about SWP and its ending. I've had a sense of foreboding about SJ walking into walls since the start and wondered when it would show up again. Here we are at 12 with a collapse and a hospital stay and just enough episodes left to drag us through plenty of angst. I say, I don't like it! Gaaaah. A tragic ending could be employed to explain a lot of SJ's actions and soothe the SLS shippers. Then again, I'm from a long line of catastrophizers ?

but the editor got a call that the doctors had said it is nothing serious.
the drama is jumpy and a lot of scenes feel like they are stubs rather than full scenes.
like they should have made SH notice something in SJ apartment or... they dont follow through with one idea and just jump around

I agree with you about jumpy and choppy leaving us without a full picture often in SWP.
I don't want to think what I am thinking. But it's just going too darn smoothly in the love dept, isn't it? Thanks for trying to talk me down!

Does anybody here go through drama saturation? I know no such term exists but I guess its just that level when you've been watching too many dramas of the same kind or from the same region with all the cliches that you can just not get into them anymore? That has happened so many times with kdramas for me that I've been switching to Japanese and variety shows often. So which Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese are good for a switch? And by that I dont mean those drama who are in a kind of American series format with each episode dealing with a new case etc.

I've had drama saturation pretty much all year – I just can't with certain cliches anymore. (Though I'm currently optimistic about Awl offering up something a little different.)
I wouldn't recommend Taiwanese dramas to escape clichés. They are much worse when it comes accidental kisses, seemingly brainless heroines, and sometimes serve you up a truck of doom, a kidnapping, a birth secret etc etc. in the course of two episodes. I don't know anything about Chinese dramas.
If you go throw maybe the past 5-10 open threads, I think you'll find plenty of Jdrama recommendations (people keep asking and I know I've suggested many recently). New ones I tried and like this week include Okitegami (though it's a bit of a serial), Siren (less of a serial than it seems to be) and Okashi no Ie.

I experienced drama saturation this year, so I tried a Japanese drama "Date" and it's "Date Special" at the end. Both delighted me. They were quirky and sweet, and the leads reminded me of people I have met in real life. Try it! I think they're on Viki and dramacool.

To all of you celebrating Hallowe'en, who happen to think it is a US tradition, do you know where it actually originated? My country, Ireland!! (and Scotland). Hallowe'en has been observed in Ireland and Scotland for 2000 years. So it's ours!! But you can borrow it.

Hi @Anna
Do you in Ireland celebrate it as All Saints' Day or maybe as All Souls' Day? How do you celebrate it?
I do celebrate in a quiet way. We have All Saints' Day on 1 Nov and All Souls' Day on 2 Nov. It's not a countrywide celebration, but a quiet, meaningful religious one. :)

The religious in Ireland would celebrate it as All Saints' Day, but the secular would celebrate it in the traditonal way. When I was young, we used to dress up in all sorts of costumes and call around from door to door asking for sweets and fruit. We didn't do trick or treat in my city Dublin, I think that particular custom originated in the north of England and Scotland, and was common in the north of Ireland too. We would have a limited amount of fireworks, but the one thing we always had was a huge bonfire, which would be lit around 6.30-7pm. Busiest night of the year for the fire services, as some of the bonfires can be truly gigantic. People from all around the neighbourhood would use Hallowe'en as an opportunity to get rid of anything flammable instead of having to pay for it to be removed. Of course, things have changed now, much more control over everything, and it has all become so commerialised now. Bit sad, really.

Forgot to say that the original purpose of the bonfires was supposedly to keep the night bright so that all the evil and scary folk on the move would not approach. Oh and another thing we had was the traditional barm brack, which is a type of a fruit bread with various items hidden in it. A ring for marriage in the next year, a bean for prosperity, a pea for bad luck (i think), and so on. Also, we used to have a traditional Hallowe'en dinner, which involved an a large dollop of Kale and potatoes mixed together, with some money hidden in it. If you didn't eat the Kale, you didn't get the money!

SWP has slowed down..I dont know why it is 16 ep..the last 4 should be all about Shin-hyuk since he is literally the best character in this drama.imo :)) Sassy Go Go is just great. freaking love it and cant wait for Soo-ah to land on her face. D-Day still has me but mainly because of Ddolmi and the main dude. omg Bubblegum BUBBLEGUM guys! this drama has me hooked. I love what they are doing with it and the artistic stuff they are doing with it..directing it or..lord i wish I knew more about the making of dramas to explain all this crap that I am just loving from it.. The village is holding my interest but the lead girl's non-reactions really bug me.. and Reply 1988..I tried watching ep0 or whatever they are calling it but it didn't have subs and i gave up.. That is all for my dramas.

Midnight, and I finally get to visit the OT! Thanks to all the OTers who recommended the K movie "Miss Granny". I found it thoroughly enjoyable, a balm for my stressed-out soul. I had a horrible week at work, including being intimidated and verbally abused by a coworker, and then dealing with a boss who didn't want to deal with it. I think one of the reasons I'm not really fond of makjang Kdramas is that I already have enough of that in my real life. Make me laugh, or at least give me the fluffy stuff, please!
I'm keeping up with She's Pretty and The Village. I agree with some of you who say SP is slowing down, and seems to have lost it's tension. I just hope they don't write in a fatal illness for our lead. That would really kill the show for me; and possibly my tv screen when I throw something at it. Village? Yes, the cops are the best part of the show. MGY is just kind of meh.
For my Kdrama throwback I finally watched I Need Romance 2012. I liked it far more than JB or GF did, I think. I found it far more enjoyable than INR3. And Lee Jin-wook became my new crush. Guys who can smile like that just make me all melty.
Thanks to the OTers last week who mentioned the Jdrama sequel to Date, "Date Special". It really recaptured the quirky delight of the original. So fun!
Have a great week!
