Hello Everyone and a Happy Weekend!

Is it October already? Scary.... and Halloween's coming up .... more scary! :)

Cheo Yong 2 - I call this the show with many long dark corridors to build suspense (in me!) and it works too well since I’m a real coward when it comes to the scary bits (quick FFD! LOL). I like the episodic format and it’s nice to see that in this Season 2 Cheo Yong is working with the team, instead of mainly with just Na Young or with just one partner. Na Young continues to be cute. It’s great that she is now able to get out and go anywhere and can help more than in Season 1. It’s also nice to see that Det Lee Jong Hyun, the cop who used to be jealous of Cheo Yong is supporting him, and that everyone accepts that he can see ghosts. I like the way he fights. There’s at least 1 fight scene per episode I feel with him fending off knife wielding villains with pizzaz.

Now that Na Young knows she can sometimes possess Jung Ha Yoon, there seems to be a running gag that Ha Yoon becomes sick like a teenager every now, and then and the guys misunderstand her getting too cozy with them.

On the whole a great show, except that I don’t know how Cheo Yong joins the dots at times and goes off to investigate on his own. It is so fast-paced that holes are easily forgiven. Unfortunately he looked better in Season 1 ie I don’t like his new hairstyle – it looks too much like a helmet.

Episode 5 – was a powerful and solid. I got great feels from Oh Ji Soo’s concern for the children. I was startled to notice that Yeon Jung Hoon played a small cameo role here, and almost was not noticeable under the cap… I wonder why when any newbie would have done. Anyway, I’m in for the long haul although it will probably be only a short one like 10 episodes again?

Gaksital - I thought of watching to get the overall story and see how Joo Won does. However I’m still having difficulty continuing with this. Somehow I don’t find the story as compelling as other shows (maybe I expected too much) and it has somehow too much colour (too vibrant if that’s possible) and the sets seem un-natural. I don’t know why, since some scenes are in the forest… but definitely all the indoor scenes or town scenes just look fake. I will try again LOL!

Midnight Diner - I’m a little sad that this sweet show is over. I loved that they showed us the real singers of the theme song for this show and gave them a story too. I also liked how we got little details of making Korean dishes (very interesting). I am super pleased that I got stage vibes from the earliest episodes and how each episode ending with people leaving looked like actors taking a bow, and then that really happened in the last episode! At least Master took a bow, to my applause! Encore! Encore!

Yong Pal - Dramafever terms this show an action thriller. !!??zzz is it over yet? Heh!

Twenty Again - The best of the current crop that I’m watching. It’s doing everything...

Twenty Again - The best of the current crop that I’m watching. It’s doing everything right and has me feeling for our leads, laughing (rather than annoyed) at our ‘villains’ and happily confident in seeing more growth in all the relationships. So much to look forward to.

She Was Pretty - Getting better now. I’m enjoying how the tower of lies keeps growing and is starting to list to one side. I’ve been giving Ha Ri a pass, but hiding the truth is one thing (still bad however) and adding on a deliberate deceit and lie for selfish gain is another (worse by far). Redemption arc needed here! Shin Hyuk’s expressions are to die for, Hye Jin is becoming more confident and calmer and Sung Joon has finally started to eat with the help of a little bromance? :D

D-Day – I like the grand scale look of it and that it appears very realistic. Like many others who are waiting for the subs, I wish I could understand more of it. Hye Sung continues to pitch himself into saving lives, even if there is not much chance of rescuing survivors or finding a place for their wounded, and the interactions and relationships continue to grow. I trust that the side stories will continue with sufficient follow-through and contribute to the overall story and theme of what doctoring should be or the value of human lives.

Best show right now, even though the competition is not particularly impressive. It knows what to do with its characters and what story to tell.
The biggest strength for me is the unashamed "optimism". After all the struggles and woobification from the setup, the show doesn't need to jump from one external conflict to the next. Positive interactions among characters are allowed without immediate retaliation from the writer.

Yes, Ha-ri is sliding down the slippery slope, but someone has to keep the drama going, because all other characters are occupied with slapstick and other forms of situational comedy.

Hye-jin's portrayal has changed for the better. We no longer see her doing her work, which means we no longer see how she screws up that badly. Instead, we see her screwing up as a person, which is still embarrassing, but in a less unprofessional way.

Twenty Again
Heheheh! "Positive interactions among characters are allowed without immediate retaliation from the writer." - you are expecting the writer to throw a few spanners into the works then? It's been going smoothly for No Ra for 2 episodes, so it's time to kick conflict up a notch?

Yes, just having Hyun Suk in ignorance of the real condition of No Ra's marriage for long enough has been quite a conflict builder-upper, so that there did not seem to be the need of much more. I'm actually looking forward as much to Woo Chul's inept efforts to manipulate matters into 'have cake and eat it' territory as to No Ra's increasing confidence and Hyun Suks increasing discomfort. Sadistic, I know. :)

She Was Pretty
"Yes, Ha-ri is sliding down the slippery slope, but someone has to keep the drama going, because all other characters are occupied with slapstick and other forms of situational comedy." - One thing this show is not, is subtle. But I suppose it's good that it's unapologetic about it, and where comedy is to be had, it is layered on thick. Then we can either laugh uproariously or groan also without apology.

"Hye-jin’s portrayal has changed for the better. We no longer see her doing her work, which means we no longer see how she screws up that badly. Instead, we see her screwing up as a person, which is still embarrassing, but in a less unprofessional way." - Which may account for why Sung Joon is suddenly more concerned about her as a person and not shouting her out for incompetence.

I still cannot reconcile the 'sedate young Hye Jin' with the 'nervous wreck adult' Hye Jin. But perhaps the change in her will be that much more obvious, as she gains more self-worth (before the fallout with Ha Ri robs her of it) and she'd better gains lots by show's end!

That was one of the things that bothered me a lot in the beginning. "Identity" was one of the major themes of the show, but there was almost no elaboration on that concept.

I had a lot of questions like:
Did HJ's behaviour change a lot since her teenage years, or just her appearance?

I often criticise K-dramas for their unnecessary exposition in concomitance with "tell-don't-show", but here I'd really like to get a little more clarity.

However, now I just think that I'm not supposed to care at all, the show doesn't seem overly concerned with these issues and is just a situational comedy.

Twenty again really is an excellent show. I hope they don't ruin it!

Gakstital: While I ended up loving the show, I can see what you mean. It's a bit repetitive at times, and I can totally see how if you weren't a part of the hype when it happened, expectations from hearing about it might be too high. It's worth giving a chance though, if for nothing else, the acting of the main male leads are excellent. (sadly I have not been able to finish a joo woon show after it)

Hi @Sajen

I watch Cheo Yong 2 on Dramacool.

Unfortunately, no, totally unexplained. She was shown to have "passed through to the other side" and disappeared in the first Season, but she's totally hanging out with Cheo Yong and idol groups in Season 2.

My guess: the producer knew the show would fail without her and the dynamics between CY and NY but they could not come up with any reason to have her back so they just did it without a reason!

I do like though, that the female detective(s) get to 'act' like Na Young whenever they get possessed. It's great to see them acting like they're acting and being rather convincing LOL!

Re: Gaksital - I only recently watched this show. I kept hearing how good it was, but kept putting it off because of the setting. Occupation era Korea just sounded too depressing, and I never seemed to be in the mood for that sort of depressing. The hyper saturated colors and sets were what saved it for me. They made it feel like a superhero movie rather than a documentary, and kept it just enough divorced from reality that I was able to watch it. Mileage varies, obviously, but I just thought it was funny that one of my favorite parts was one of the things putting you off. :-)

@ Manin and Amilia

Yes, isn't it interesting. What is a winning feature in the show can also be the one that turns off some viewers. But keeping in mind that the 'look' is intentional, will probably help me look at it from a different angle. That will most likely help a great deal! LOL! Thanks.

And I notice @ Manin mentions male leads... so Jin Se Yeon was just as per normal, I take it? :)

Haha, Honestly I didn't think she was that bad in Gaksital. At least she didn't ruin anything for me. However the Joo Won and Park Ki-woong owned it for me with their performance.

I only made it through the first episode of Gaksital, despite all the hype. To me it looked like a drama playing at being set in the 30's. There was no authenticity that I expect from period dramas; the language was wrong, too modern; the behaviour was very 21st century and it came across to me as a bit slapstick. Admittedly this was only the first episode but I was seriously underwhelmed. Is it worth my while ever going back to it?

0

Hi @Anna

It's OK if you don't feel like watching this show. I am only choosing to do so for my own reasons, already aware that I may not like much of the production overall. I cannot therefore recommend it. You have valid reasons for not liking it, therefore "Go with how you feel", I guess, is as good advice as any. :)

0

Anna -

Well I think it is supposed to be set in the 30's and some things were okay, especially fashion vise. Language I cannot really say anything on.

I do think some of it comes from it being a manhwa. So some of the slapstick feel can come from playing up the comic book side of things. It's not a pure historical drama, although it does use historical events.

Personally I do think it's a drama that is worth the watch. However, like GB said, it's your own personal preference. If you don't like it you don't. No one here is gonna be angry for you not liking a show that was popular :)

0

Hi @GB unni!

I said last week that I would start Gaksital (because of Joo Woon) and I did! ?

I am now on Episode... 24!!! Nyahaha! I did about 3 episodes per night.

I must say, I am really enjoying it. Probably not the same as how it was with the other Beanies during airing time but I do find it very engaging. The acting and chemistry (or anti-chemistry, if there is such a thing) of our hero and our villain are just superb! The romance is kind of meh and to think I am one who wants my fair share of romance in my dramas. The feels I get actually come from the angst and the badass, so I'm surprised that the show is able to give me that.

Well, there are plotholes, yes. And LOTS of moments where you suspend belief. But if you let that go, you get to enjoy the heart of the show much better. Anyway, I'm four episodes away from the end so I'll be locked up in my room the entire day. You'll know I'm still alive because I'll probably be screaming GAKSITAAAAAAAAAL from time to time. ?

Happy Friday! My drama basket is full again. I feel blessed this year drama-wise because drama that I enjoy keeps coming.

YongPal:YongPal ended! I still don't get it why it had such a high 20% ratings. I mean it was great in the beginning but went WTH later. About a week ago, they carried out their 20% ratings promise, by having dinner outing with reporters. Jung WongIn/Chief Lee said it was his first time to be able to meet such a high rating promise, and it was his family honor.

Anyway I am glad it ended for JooWon's sake. He said he was so tired that he was glad the drama was ending. One of the things he said was that his grandma confuses him as the character in drama, so she told him to hurry going back to HanShin, and give Kim TaeHee the wedding ring. Cute.

The winner from this show is Kim TaeHee for sure. I also wondered after I saw her being a nominee for Korean drama awards(October 9th), but now I think that might be possible. lol.

She was pretty: And I am glad She was pretty is getting better(meaning Hwang JungEum is less shrilling, and Park SuJeon is not so terrible).
I love Siwon in the show. This is what JB/GF said in Thing vs. thing about Siwon in King of Dramas.
“He’s hilarious. Just the variety of facial expressions
alone is a crack-up. He’s vapid and vain and totally
willing to go there to look absurd.” Exactly- does
this mean he didn't make any progress in last 3 years?
lol.

People are talking about who wins comedic acting between Hwang JungEum and Choi SiWon. Obviously Knetizens are not bothered by HJE's over-acting (I am not either).
Hwang JunEum earned another nick LovelyJin (Lovely+
HaeJin), in addition to her 'MidBoHwang'(You can watch
trusting Hwang JungEum on her acting). That is quite a
compliment. And at this moment, I will take any pairing
because I like all 4 leads(Even though Go JunHee is ?).

Preproduction: There are a few dramas currently being made before airing (and some hope that could become new trend). There have been a few preproduction dramas, but none had high ratings. And I think that is one of the reasons it has not been implemented even though live-shooting keep having criticism (poor casts).

Live-shoot(due to last minutes script) continued because that way writers can change scripts depending on viewers' sentiment. But Lee BumSoo(from Last) said that does not mean(changing script based on viewers' response/ratings) show's success.
I agree. I can't think of any dramas which succeeded because writer changed the direction of story(or writer got changed) because of viewer responses. Can you?

"But Lee BumSoo(from Last) said that does not mean(changing script based on viewers’ response/ratings)"

Kim Young-Hyun is famous for changing the script because of the viewers responses and for the ratings.
(Dae Jang Geum's ending would have been different and same thing with Bidam in QSD).

What would the DJG ending have been? I've always kinda liked the ending.

So Bidam's character development was the writers responding to public pressure, not the MBC front office pressuring the writers? Any sources for that?

Dae Jang Geum and Officer Min weren't suppose to end up together.

She totally turned Shilla's history upside down for Bidam lol. Fan power! You might find some of the interviews at soompi if they still have them. I have been following her since Dae Jang Geum but I don't keep that kind of stuff.

I did read one interview with Kim Yeong-hyeon after QSD where all she said was that she and her co-writer hadn't been able to follow their plan for Bidam because he became so popular with the fans. It sounded like they had no choice, that's why I thought it must be the network doing the pressuring.

Personally I've always hated what they did with Bidam. Turning the one-time "chicken man" into the great queen's boyfriend ruined the last dozen episodes for me.

0

@kellie

"Personally I’ve always hated what they did with Bidam"

Same here and I do have a love/hate relationship with the writers.
I think they did it to keep the ratings from free falling after Mishil died. Kim Yeong-hyeon has a lot of freedom to do what she wants with her dramas.

0

Be it preproduction or liveshooting, each has advantages and disadvantages. Both can't guarantee ratings or praises, so it's down to the team behind the screen. And the actors. And viewers. Liveshooting means they can change the direction in the middle (and it's not always bad depending how they execute it) but preproducing offers a more comfortable shooting for actors and staff. I prepare preproducing though.

Hi

at 12:42
So, I don´t have a lot of time right now, going to see Viplala - I can NOT believe my favorite ever childrens´ book is FINALLY a movie, they say it was the largest movie project in Netherlands in 15 years. This is so amazing, I am up in the sky.

anyway, seems like She Was Pretty is getting a bit better, although some parts are a big question mark. But HJE and PSJ seem more synchronized with their acting and the awkward-funny moments don´t seem so unnatural any more.

I managed to log in to my Random Tails blog and write about it a bit.

And Siwon!
POSSIBLE SPOILER:

I don´t think anyone else could play such crazy scenes with such gusto. But why does poor Park Seo Joon always end up in the hands of perverts. Like Yo Na wasn´t enough, now a guy steals his underwear... writers dirty fantasies.

SPOILER OVER.

anyway, gotta go. see ya.

at 16:20
I saw Viplala, and... it is perhaps not quite as magical as the books and the estonian dubbing was disturbing, I wonder if I can see it with original voices somewhere. The main thing missing was the irony the books contained. It was too cheesy and the children in the cinema were sneering and saying "how embarrassing!", even though they were like 9-12 years old. I loved the guy who played Viplala. He is totally adorable. but the original Viplala is supposed to be a misanthrope, a little.

overall what matters is it will boost childrens´ imagination, for sure. and there WILL be a sequel. too.

Since I've only watched 10 complete kdramas, I can only name few. . . okay only one :D

From my short list, Cantabile Tomorrow comes to mind.

(Quoting my reason from my post in soompi hahaha)

After struggling in the first half, they manage to transition in such an amazing way when as JB puts "once it decided to be its own drama". Cantabile decided to go with an adaptation that didn't care if they would be totally different from Nodame Cantabile. It still had some of the elements of the original but once they found the right formula and groove, it became wonderful.

Hello beanies..

-SHE WAS PRETTY: After 2 weeks, I even expected the slapstick, overreacting, and Seongjoon's general meanness. Whenever he start scolding Haejin and make a cruel comment, I just translate it into apology or gratitude or motivation or concern or any other thing that he can't say properly (I assume there are many short-circuited wire inside his brain that he can only talk and act cruelly). That way, suddenly this drama become 20 times easier to handle. But aside from that, this week eps are quite satisfying. Finally we got to see our rightful couple interract with each other. And also thumb up for that reluctant bromance, I died laughing.

-WHAT IS THE GHOST UP TO: Finally KBSworld upload some of their new drama special. I already miss Joon so much after Grapevine. It's also nice that Jo Soohyang already has another project after playing a notorious bully in School2015. This girl got a lot of potential. I love her as a cute and adorable ghost who knows what she wants and not afraid to say it. And they also got this adorable but heartbreaking realtionship that totally makes me cry.

Anyone know where I can watch Snow is on the Sea/Snow in Sea Breeze (an early 2015 movie starring Park Haejin and Kim Youngah) with eng sub? None of my usual sites have this.

Looking for the battle among
Six Flying Dragons vs Sassy Go Go vs Dazzling Temptation

Actually SFD and DZ are tempting (pardon the pun) but they're 50 eps each!! Holy moly! 6 months watching a young prince kills off his brothers and eventually becomes a king or a tragic melodrama endlessly painful first love story?
Sassy Go Go seems a more viable option indeed. But SFD has Kim Myung Min and Yoo Ah In while DZ has Joo Sang Wook?
What do you gonna do next week people? Watching all three or only one? Which one(s) do you watch?

--------------
On another news, Ji Chang Wook fans, rest assured, he won't enlist soon. At least not until early next year. He's just confirmed as the male lead character for joint Chinese-Korean drama called "My Male God".
Tang Yan is his rumored co-star, but hasn't confirmed yet.
I don't know what to say, I'm a bit conflicted. It will bring him exposure+money, esp to Chinese market. But joint production has bad history and we haven't even known the synopsis! Worse yet, they'll certainly dub Ji Chang Wook's voice. Oh his VOICE!

The changed voice depends on if they are doing it in Chinese or in Korean I suppose. If Chinese all the actors will be dubbed over, so at least it's consistent? Though I prefer having it dubbed where you cannot hear the actor speaking korean under it. I saw that in a project and it left me unable to continue watching because it just became terrible and mixed all of the languages together.

Ah yeah then dubbing all the way. It's a shame, but at least they are used to dubing. I hope he is trying to speak chinese though, that makes it a lot less painful than when you have the actor clearly acting in a different language.

I remember that being talked about with SJS's chinese movie, that he tried speaking chinese to make it fit the dubbing more. First time I saw that movie I didn't think about it, as I didn't know who he was.

Six Flying Dragons will be the mon/tues winner is my guess. It has very little to do with actual history so if you are in it for the history you will be disappointed. It's better not to know and just go with the flow.

History aside (it hasn't even aired already and it's already been thrown out the window lol), sometimes I do enjoy Kim Yeong-hyun's character work, though that probably has more to do with the actors' performances. I was a huge fan of Sejong in TWDR (Han Seok-kyu was beyond awesome in that), and I would have been so much happier if Queen Seon Deok had been about Mishil (Go Hyun-jung!!!!!) instead of Lee Yo-won.

But that Sejong was lifted from a novel written by someone else, even Mishil's character.

Dae Jang Geum was her original solo work. I like her take on Ballad of Seo Dong Yo too because it was her own interpretation.

I think she got lazy after she teamed up with Park. Most of her characters are based on someone else's original work.
I'd love it if she writes her own sageuk without Park's influence.

She is usually the exec producer in her dramas and she gets to pick actors that she thinks would fit her characters. She has been doing a great job casting great talents to carry her shows.

I'm on the fence with Kim Myung Min here. He's rather silly for a renown and powerful scholar. YAI's character (*sigh*). Our 15 yr old government official is too busy chasing a poor girl.

I want watch a new sageuk and Merchant's sub is a bit slow. SFD will be subbed faster.

I forgot that TWDR was based on a novel lol. Han Seok-kyu was so amazing in that. And so was Song Joong-ki. idk about Kim Myung-min as Jung Do-jeon either, but I'll take seeing him in a semi-decent role--it's been a really long time. I mean, obviously this drama is never going to be great but he could be the next Han Seok-kyu or Go Hyun-jung, performance-wise.

I haven't started on Merchant yet--I'm waiting for a few episodes to accumulate. If you've seen any of it, what do you think? I'm going to tune in for the first couple of episodes of 6FD at least, too. If Lee Bang-won gets woobified, though, I'm not sure how long I'll last lol.

0

Here is hoping that this would be Kim Myung Min's turn.

I want to watch the first Tree with Deep Root but it's so old I can't find it anywhere.

I'm waiting for Merchant to be fully subbed to 10 eps at least.

I know I'll be throwing popcorns at my pc screen but I'll watch it for KMM.

0

TWDR is available in Dramacool

0

@prettysup

Thank you but I'm not talking about the (2011) "TWDR" version. The "Tree With Deep Root" drama I'm talking about came out in the late 1980s. Kim Young-Hyun wasn't the first writer to turn Lee Jung-Myung's novel into a drama.

Btw "Painter of the Wind" was also a novel written by Lee Jung-myung.

0

@Kiara. Okay, we can talk about Merchant again in a couple of weeks haha. I almost watched the first ep just to get an idea of what it's like, but then I heard there was a childhood section and decided to wait a while.

Old sageuk are hard to find, especially subbed :( I remember when I first discovered Jung Ha-yeon I started getting all excited, seeing all the sageuk he'd written, and I was so depressed when I realized that most of them were unavailable haha.

0

@juniper

I haven't been able to watch a lot of Jung's work yet and probably won't be able to. I wish I knew about him when I was old enough to read lol. I felt like I'm really missing out.
I haven't seen "The King and the Queen" (1998) so I had no idea he had 2 dramas with Grand Prince Suyang in it. I knew he was in In-soo but didn't quite get the details since there was no subs at the time and my friend who was trying to translate it hated him so he left a lot out lol.

0

@Kiara. Your friend sounds like a funny guy. Like I knew that Sejo was controversial but I had no idea people still felt so strongly about him haha.

The King and Queen was the one I wanted to see the most too, out of all his older dramas. When my Korean is good enough the first thing I'm doing is hunting down a copy of it (though it'll probably take me 100 years to understand ancient Korean at the rate I'm learning lol). In addition to Sejo being in there, I believe Chae Si-ra played Queen Insoo in that drama as well! She must have really enjoyed that role.

I will be watching all 3. DZ PD said he feels burdened to go against SFD. Sassy Go Go team said they are not going for ratings, but for viewers (good attitude). I have high hopes for SFD, with the writer Kim Young-Hyun (was just mentioned as the one changing scripts based on viewer responses. Still she is great, wrote Dae JangGeum and QSD after all). Also KMM KMM KMM fistpump!

I was rewatching "The Master's Sun" last night and daydreaming about a So Ji Sub/Gong Hyo Jin reunion in a future drama. That got me to thinking about actor reunions. Currently Hwang Jun-Eum and Park So-Joon are together again in "She Was Pretty" after acting together in "Kill Me, Heal Me."

Lee Dong-Wook and Lee Da-Hae have done "My Girl" and "Hotel King" together; Jung Yumi and Eric Mun did "Discovery of Romance" and "Que Sera" together; Jang Hyuk and Jang Na-Ra did "Successful Story of a Bright Girl," "Fated to Love You," and the short film, "Old Farewell" together.

All that said, what actors would you want most to act together again? And specifically, in what kind of drama (that is different from what they did before?)

I'd like to see the aforementioned So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin paired again as partners in a crime drama as partners. Romance is optional (but with their chemistry, it would be a crime if that wasn't part of the equation).

YES to the bromance repeats! (I'll add Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin to my wishlist, even though they've become too huge as stars to conceivably fit in the same project at this point in their careers).

I also wouldn't mind seeing a repeat of Lee Jong-seok and Park Shin-hye, but I would also take a Kim Woo-bin/Park Shin-hye pairing if I could get it. They were positively crackling in Heirs despite his character being a bastard and her having no chemistry at all with Lee Min-ho.

What rubs me wrong is that people coming out after the dust has settle for a long time ago.. you said the heirs lead didn't had any chemistry?

I don't know if you have been living under rock but that chemistry happened to create the largest shippers in Kdrama history and largest supported drama plus breaking Youku viewer records as well dramafever.. perhaps watched drama as well..

So you coming here saying that there was no chemistry is something you felt but most certainly don't share with the majority.. keep your judgement subjective because if we all started talking about all the dramas we dropped because of what we found in no chemistry we could be here for ages..

But I can tell you this with certainity is that ''HEIRS'' did it for most and thats what counts what are dramas made for anyways.. to get watched, loved and supported and heirs happens to meet all these even tho they have as well loud critics but the numbers are there to be seen.. A success is a success

Seriously tho conspiracy theorists and revisionists like this rubs people the wrong way..

It wasen't an opinion it was written there was no chemistry? its like saying Elvis was shiit or the beatles wasen't successful..

everything has a certain criteria of judgement of what is successful and flop.. questioning dramas that exceeded the expectations and the artists chemistry in that matter is reaching for straws.. I don't like the beatles but can't deny that they were success overall and did it for some people back then.. what is good is subjective and tastes are different so its up to every single individual to chose.. so if the poster put in my opinion didn't reply to it but the poster said just bad chemistry..

I'd like to see Lee Joon-ki reunite with Jung Kyung-ho. imo they had more acting chemistry in TBDAW than LJK and Nam Sang-mi.

And yes Yoo Ah-in/Song Joong-ki! (though if we could move beyond queer subtext and have straight up queer text, that would be amazing. I know I'm dreaming, this is dramaland, but still...) Their characters were the only things that sustained me through SKKS's abject gender/sexuality fails.

I don't like romance reunions, why people want them is a mystery to me. Once the couple works great in one story I want to remember them like that, if I get the same actors in a different story it feels like a cheap imitation, it would have to be in a really great story to be worthy and how many of them are that good?

Sometimes it's nice to see two actors pairing up in different stories and different types of projects. I liked Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum in Secret Love, but they were also great in Kill Me Heal Me where his character and hers was totally different and the story was different too.

Even Hollywood actors work together as couples in different projects, Brad and Angelina Jolie did Mr and Mrs Smith and now they are coming out with a different movie which is more film festival type. Both projects can be successful if the story and directing is good.

While it may be difficult to see the reunion of So Ji-Sub & Gong Hyo-Jin for the time being, I’m looking forward to see him pairing up with Shin MinA in upcoming Oh My God. Gong Hyo-Jin is one of my favourite actresses, she does have amazing chemistry with SJS in Master’s Sun, as well as with Jo In-sung in It’s Okay, That’s Love. I like Shin MinA too, she is very attractive in an unpretentious way, so far, in my opinion, she is the only actress which is a perfect match for LJK, their pairing in Arang and the Magistrate was so awesome!! So likewise, there is a very high chance that she and SJS will make a great OTP.

0

Required fields are marked *

I would die of joy if So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin ever paired up in a drama again. And imo romance is compulsory, Master's Sun (a VERY skinship-heavy drama) did not deliver nearly enough on that front. Any genre is ok, as long as there are smoochies!

Other pairings I want to see a reunion of:

1. Lee Jun-ki and Shin Mina (Arang & the Magistrate) : when I first heard of this drama, I was unsure how this pairing would turn out even though I love them both individually. But they had chemistry in spades, I don't think oppa has ever had sparks that good with any actress before or since. Not even Nam Sang-mi.

2. Song Joong-ki and Moon Chae-won (Nice Guy): They had some great, really intense chemistry there and I loved that the drama exploited it fully. But next time I'd like them in a romcom or even a thriller/action story - less pain and angst, more heart-poundingly close proximity.

3. Won Bin and Gong Hyo-jin (Guns & Talks): in anything that gives them a proper, full-focus love line as the leads. Though I realise that 14 years after the movie and with a decreasing likelihood of Won Bin ever coming back to acting at all, there is a snowball's chance in hell for this.

4. Kim Woo-bin and Kim Ji-won (Heirs): In anything at all that lets them have a proper love line (and is better than Heirs). Heirs was all tease and then cheated us out of actually seeing them as a couple, I'm still annoyed about that.

5. Yoo Yeon-seok and Kang Sora (Warm & Cozy): ANY kind of drama will do. Just please, god, let it be better than Warm & Cozy.

6. Honorable mention: IU and Lee Hyun-woo. Ok, I realise they only did a music video together and not a drama or movie but they were SO adorable in that that I need to see them as the otp in an acting project stat. Especially post-producer, which seems to have genuinely unlocked new potential in IU as an actress.

oh and I'll also add - Kim Woo-bin and Lee Yubi!

They worked together at the start of their careers in Vampire Idol (her acting debut, in fact) and were adorable together even though the drama was cheesy and hid her in a giant rabbit head most of the way.

I want them in a drama where he can actually see her face this time, and I definitely want it to look less budget than VI (which had its own zany charm). Too bad she's still in rookieland, relatively speaking.

I'd like to see Jo In-sung and Ha Ji-won together again, they had a great romantic chemistry in "What Happened in Bali" -- despite their dysfunctional, disturbing interactions (well, it was a very dark drama). Now that they're more experienced and polished in their craft, I bet they'd be even better!

I'd like them in a either a romantic-drama or romcom or melo -- whatever! Just something that they must be the lead couple in and it must light/not as tragic as "Bali".

I don't know much about Choi Min Soo, but I do know Ko Hyun Jung from Spring Day and Daemul. There is an air of dignified charismatic charm about her which makes it kind of hard for her to pair up nicely with anyone, at least not with Kwon Sang-woo in Daemul, and she is even more incompatible with Jo In-Sung in Spring Days so much so that I rather she liked his brother Ji Jin-hee in the drama.

I'd like to see Lee Je-hoon pair up with Park Eun-bin again after Secret Door. This isn't exactly a romance reunion, or shippy wish fulfillment (I thought their quasi-loveline halfway through was extremely reductive for both characters and hated every minute of it). Park Eun-bin played Heo Joon's wife in the 2013 remake. I was very impressed that someone so young could play the role of a wife to someone 20yrs older than her with such maturity. She was just the perfect devoted wife and she even had chemistry with Kim Ju-Hyeok. It would have been totally awkward with another 21yr old actress.

I also want to see her in lead roles too. She is so ready.

Woohoo just finished Yongpal!
The ending was...kinda rushed, especially the surgery part, like they just showed a few seconds of it?? And what bummed me most was they didn't show what happened to Chaeyoung after that!
Some good points:
1) I finally could feel the chemistry between the otp. ♥♥
2) I really love the Head Housekeeper. I teared up slightly when she just lost it and cried for Yeojin to snap out of her state. :'( Also she was really smart when hinting the points through the recorded telephone call.
3) I really, really love how at the very end, the last line by Yeojin resonates with the first episode.

It was a pretty good final episode, I think. At the end, everything comes back to...Yongpal.

She Was Pretty
I "ship":

Sung-joon with Ha-ri.
Shin-hyuk with Hye-jin.
Hye-jin with Ha-ri.
Shin-hyuk with Ha-ri.
Shin-hyuk with Sung-joon.

That means the only combination I cannot support is the actual official breeding pair. Good job there!

(Side note: As a science historian and psychologist, I have fun with the name-dropping of the psychology classics in K-dramas. Bluma Zeigarnik, however, is a first for me here. Which is strange, Festinger and Barker -- two of the other students of Kurt Lewin -- get addressed once in a while, despite the fact that the Zeigarnik effect is basically a K-drama trope.)

Yong Pal
Picked it up again, as promised, for the "female revenge" plot. Wow, what a mess. It seems like every single episode was written by a different person, who also never read anything about the previous episodes.

Occasionally, the show tries to subvert the usually cliches and go for a more earnest approach. But only very occasionally.

Oh D-Day. I honestly cannot believe how much I hate that show. It's not like it's the worst thing I've seen, and as you say, it tries every once in a while. I just hate the way that writer does genre, I guess--had the exact same problem with City Hunter. She has a superficial understanding the conventions of genre storytelling, but that's as far as it goes. Her storytelling priorities are straight out of trendy canon, as are her characters and relationship dynamics, which means you're faced with an insane level of dissonance between concept/execution the minute you get past the surface. (though things start to smell at the surface imo. Casting lightweights like LMH in CH, or Kim Young-kwang here, is a pretty big indicator that they simply aren't interested in the real thing).

I hate D-Day so much that I'm actually starting to like it. It's like just what will it take to make me stop watching this show? Viewing a train wreck in slow motion describes it perfectly for me. It's got all the usual medical emergencies and disaster movie tropes and cliches but the writer is putting the most bizarre spin on them so I can't figure out if it's supposed to be a comedy or what. I spend most of the show either giggling or outright laughing.

What I do find most puzzling though is how a major, world class city like Seoul in a country that is still technically in a state of war with N. Korea doesn't have a major disaster plan in place. Medical personnel, first responders etc are floundering around like dealing with major emergencies has never, ever been discussed. Like WTF???

I knoooow. Once I get over my rage issues I start laughing too--it's getting easier now that it's not copying Golden Time as much anymore. What gets me even more than the lack of preparedness (you are so right it's not even funny) is the lack of basic awareness about earthquakes. Like, I don't live in an earthquake prone region at all but even I know the basics. I just about died when the earthquake happened and that director woman decided it would be a good idea to start the car and drive into the street, and when everyone started running from room to room screaming and no one chilled out and tried standing in a doorway. And then they were so confused about what happened--like they had to be told that it was an earthquake, no one went out on a limb and assumed that the ground shaking=earthquake.

She Was Pretty - Oh my dear Hari, you're turning into quite a problematic fave. I mean, yes, I do love you and your friendship with Wifey but don't you see, the thing you're trying to prioritize now is what's potentially sabotaging the more precious ones in the process... You do realize what you're doing so hopefully, you act a bit more selflessly so that wrong, horrible gut-feeling goes away.

That aside, I was rolling on the floor with the hilarity of poiseless, flabbergasted Sungjoon. Either I'm getting more used to HJE's 110% energy level or Hyejin's learning some chill. Darling weirdo Shinhyuk's candidate for perfect orabeoni, where do I get one?

Hi John,
I believe that Ha Ri has enough luv for wifey to get through this as revealed in her comment in their bedroom scene (ha), “Being okay…is hard.” A truer statement there never was (kdrama of RL). If running into her stepmother was enough to give her a reality check, then good. I like how Ha Ri works through her conflicting emotions openly. Womance will prevail. She is the best second lead, in fact, I’d say her and Hye Jin are co-leads. Btw, doesn’t everything just look so good oh Ha Ri? She has such long, slender hands – so graceful.

Hooray for bromance, even if it’s one sided. Makes it so much fun to watch.

I think I’ll have to post on SWP below on OT!

Ha-ri looks AMAZING in everything, even the more absurd things she wears.

It helps that Go Joon-hee has such a long, slender neck - it's perfect for that black Leon-style choker ribbon, and her short haircut emphasises it even more (another strong visual difference from most kdrama heroines, who would never wear their hair that short).

So this is basically random, but I just googled a well-known actress inmy country who married a 'chaebol'. Turns out her in-laws are so (so so sooo) powerful and they run business since like 60 years ago. Funny thing is her own father in-law is the epitome of K-drama chaebol: hot blooded, violent, etc. He was also accused for shooting a waiter to death just because his credit card couldn't be used (now if you're from my country you must know who he is) and obviously got away with it since his family is filthy rich. Reading his story is like watching a K-drama. Now I think real-life chaebol are are actually more dramatic than those in K-dramas.

And now, the only show I keep up with is D-Day. It's slowly subbed so I don't have to keep up if I cannot watch for a week. It's obviously overdramatized (though reading chaebol story above have redefined my understanding of 'overdramatic'), the CG still looks like CG but I have seen worse. What surprises me is the actor. KYK, however of a j*rk he is in real life, I respect him for improving. Jung So Min is also good since it's the first time I see her. The only thing that bugs me is that how a hospital that big seems to have only one nurse? I mean, I know it's supposed to be uglier than the central hospital, but it's still unbelievable.
I kinda like how the story unfolds, by giving different point of view from the survivor (the subway victims, Hangang Mirae, Mirae, Kang Joo Ran, her fiancee). I hope they will be shown more. Especially I'm curious about Kang Joo Ran's son.

after the Korean Airlines nut rage incident, I can genuinely believe that rich people at that level get away with things that make even dramas seem tame sometimes.

D-day seems interesting, but the subs lag so much that I can never be in time for the recap. And I need subs for this show, with all the medical/disaster terminology. As for KYK, people are free to dislike him for his public statements, but some people carry it too far and attempt to tar his friends (the model gang) with the same brush when there is absolutely no evidence that they share his mentality. Pardon my French, but that, to be frank, is pure bullshit.

I read about the "nut rage" incident as I am from the area. I was amazed that the CEO's daughter was able to cause the plane to go back to the gate because her nuts were served to her in a bag rather than dish. Going back to the gate because she wanted to kick the flight attendant off the plane because of this mistake was unbelievable. That was not a culture thing but the act of an incredible 40-year old indulged brat.

I don't know whether the culture (of rich people, not necessarily Korean culture per se) can be so easily separated from the fact that this woman was raised with that kind of entitlement.

At least she went to jail for it, albeit only for 5 months. Let's see her try to get into the US or Europe again now that she has a criminal record. She'll be lucky!

What really reminds me of K-dramas in the chaebol father-in-law case, he came with a woman (although he's already married of course) to a bar in a hotel, and when his credit card was rejected the woman said, "Don't you know who he is? He's the owner of this hotel!" I rolled my eyes upon reading that because it's a line came out in any chaebol drama.
I don't really know how blown up it was since it happened long time ago when I was a child but I wonder if it happened in Korea in recent days how netizens woupd react, and if it's being blown up in Korea the international world would likely pay attention. It would be far more interesting than Nut Rage since it involved a death.

Regarding KYK, there are actors that I don't really like in real life but don't really mind to see in dramas or movies. There are also actors who I really don't like in real life thus I can't stand watching them (cough, Lee Byung Hun, cough, Kim Hyun Joong). KYK clearly falls in the former category. Despite his view of beauty, he clearly shows he wants to improve in interviews. His character in Pinocchio was so cliche and now he's given a chance to act a character who's richer in emotions, and of course lines. And boy, what an improvement though I must take the ability of cable channel to make their actors look less awkward into account.

What a cast ! Eita, Ono Machiko, Maki Yoko and Ayano Go

I don't think you can go wrong with this.

for querky (with a hint of romance): Atashinchi no Danshi

I also recommend Hana Kimi (NOT the 2011 version. This doesn't exist) if you haven't seen it (It's the same story that became "to the beautiful you")

YES to 2007 Hana Kimi.

The supporting cast is everything (it is also responsible for introducing me to Mizushima Hiro, who slayed me dead even in a supporting role and with a birds' nest on his head). Though I loved Oguri Shun as Izumi, and seeing TTBY just throws all the deficiencies into glaring contrast.

and I envy anyone getting to see Nakatsu going 'homo ja nai!' for the first time.

Another yes for Hana Kimi! No one could ever top Ikuta Toma's Nakatsu. Him dancing and singing "homo ja nai!" will forever be one my favorite scenes.

I loved all of the scenes where he is debating with himself. In the "silent" acting mode with elaborate hand movements.

0

the 2007 version is the only one I acknowledge existing :p The combination of hilariousness Oguri Shun and Ikuta Toma. And all the side characters are just love in it.

My hopes for TTBY was for it to unite the crazyness of the japanese version, with the more true-to-the-manga of the taiwanese version. Sadly it failed to do so.

yeah, to me 2007 Hana Kimi is the OG Hana Kimi (even ahead of the Taiwanese version, which is also beloved by many - I think Ella Chen was a better lead actress than Horikita Maki, but the supporting cast factor means j-Hana Kimi gets the win)

Where can I find it? I've been searching and only the Taiwanese version comes up

hmm, I haven't watched it since dramacrazy went down but it's one of the more popular jdramas and fully subbed - pretty sure dr*mafire, dr*m*cool or one of those sites will have it. last I knew, gooddrama had it.

0

Gooddrama has it, and drama (dot) net as well at least.

Princess Jellyfish is ADORABLE.

My tastes in jdrama seem to tend to the darker/thriller-y stuff, but if you want quirky slice-of-life, it doesn't get much better than Honey & Clover. It's an oldie but goodie, about a bunch of college friends.

I guess people will have already recced you earlier stuff like the 2007 Hana Kimi or Hana Yori Dango, not to mention Gokusen (daughter of a yakuza clan becomes a schoolteacher, it doesn't get much more hilarious than that).

Also if you like Princess Jellyfish you should definitely watch Kamikaze Girls. It's one of my all-time favourites in any language, and absolutely glorious. The two leads absolutely kill it (and it is that rare bird - a movie centred on a female friendship, with a very imperfect and cranky central narrator - who is awesome btw).

Hi! If you enjoyed watching Long Vacation and like Kimura Takuya, you may want to watch Beautiful Life, Engine, as well as Hero (the Japanese one with Kimura Takuya as the lead actor not the Korean one with LJK).

Also, I am recommending Over Time, which is my favourite Jdrama by famous Japanese screen writer Kitagawa Eriko, who also produced Long Vacation and Beautiful life. Sorimachi Takashi is the lead actor in Over Time, he was charming, though in a different way from Kimura Takuya.

Recommending Buzzer Beat...It's not quirky but definitely has oddles of romance with a side of comedy..I love this one!

Also watch - Rich Man, Poor Woman and Love Revolution..both are fun romantic dramas =)

Not sure what there is to judge, that's a great list of dramas (only ones I haven't watched are Mr. Brain & 99 days, and don't care that much for Hotaru no Hikari – the rest, I all love too!).

The currently airing Tamiyou is a great, quirky one with fantastic actors to boot (the two leads especially)

Or an oldie: Hana Kimi. (I see some have recommended it already.)

And how about Moteki? (There's a film & a dorama.) Romance and quirky.

You could also go down the path of SPEC – it's sci-fi mystery, but it comes with some quirks.

And, oh! Hard Nut! A detective drama, but it has a great, quirky heroine (Hashimoto Ai as a math genius! I would LOVE more heroines like this) who has a crush on Kora Kengo (who plays a detective). Tbh, still hoping for a second season for this one....

My sister loves Switch Girl!!. Typical shoujo and comedy stuff. It has a Kare Kano/His or Her Circumstances (the anime) feel to it but more on the comedy side. Both lead characters have "on and off" switches, and the female lead's "off" is terribly and hilariously funny.

Another to consider is Amachan.

A bunch of episodes, (156 to be exact), short @ 15 minutes per episode.

Excellent story about mom/daughter relationships that cover three generations. Some low level high school romance first kiss stuff. The longing and pining amongst the adults is funny.

Story is split between diving for sea urchins in rural Japan and becoming a pop idol in Tokyo. How quirky is that?

Wonderful cast, Rena Nounen , Kyoko Koizumi and Ai Hashimoto .

Kyoko Koizumi is outstanding as the mom.

Well this week I mainlined Noble, My Love. I had really wanted to see Sung Hoon in something else since he played a magical flute-playing assassin in Faith, complete with a crazy long white haired wig that kept giving me Bride With White Hair vibes. So dressed as a normal chaebol type in a modern suit he was unbelievably hot. Plus the web drama really pandered with the chocolate abs. There were even ab-viewing flashbacks.

The story wasn't great - the format made it choppy - but it wasn't horrible. Some of the dumbest rich guy bullying for attention since Boys Over Flowers. You could tell the production values were not really stellar. Some of the sets looked like some random person's apartment or a conference room in a hotel. But it was cute. It just made me wish it had been turned into about a 12 episode regular drama. But puppies and chocolate abs!!!

I am really looking forward to the highlight of my week, Twenty Again. You know, with tvN's recent track record I expected it to be a decent follow-up to Oh My Ghostess (I seem to like pretty much everything they put on in that timeslot) but I was not expecting it to be so incredibly good. Based on the the time of year the show is happening in, it seems the series must have been filmed entirely in advance back in the spring. I'm thinking that maybe that's why the series has been 100% consistent in quality with no editing mistakes or seemingly random reversals. They have had time to do the work without rushing and aside from the great story, characters, and acting the whole show seems to have a great deal of polish.

Hey everybody...happy OT!!

I'm actually on here early enough - which rarely happens! ? Hope yall had a good Chuseok!!

I'm actually startled at myself how I've been watching my two dramas (Twenty Again & She Was Pretty) faithfully, despite the course load! ?

Twenty Again: Gah, I love this drama!! I love how No-ra is becoming her own person (loved last week's ending!) and how she's experiencing all the things that she didn't get to as a young adult. I love Hyun-seok and his blatant ways of going gaga over No-ra (heehee) although he felt like he was doing right by trying to help them reconcile. If you only knew!! Can't wait til he finds out the state of their marriage. And even though I'd written Min-soo off as an ungrateful little brat, his realization and hearing what really happened - while he still has that crappy way of expressing himself (thanks to Dad) - his moment with No-ra was tear-inducing!! ? Now if he could only get rid of annoying gf. I wasn't surprised Yi-jin was full of herself ("wasn't marrying me the your top goal in life??" Barfff) and how she thinks Hyun-seok likes her - again, if she only knew that he knew! Definitely looking forward to watching today's ep in a few!! ?

She Was Pretty: I love how they decided to have Sung-joon fall for Hye-jin as she is now, rather than after she probably gets a makeover. That being said though...my biggest gripe is with how they went there with Ha-ri - gah!!! ??? Her growing mountain of lies and she thinks, ah I can pursue him because she basically let me?? Argh, you are such the worst bff ever...it officially become real yesterday with her swiping Hye-jin's prized possession, and she ain't ever coming back...even if she deludes herself into thinking that she'll tell Hye-jin the truth later. Yeah, it's already way too damn late. But I'm also very glad that Sung-joon is realizing that things feel off with her and how he feels like someone totally unexpected like Hye-jin is giving him his long-lost love Hye-jin vibes!! ? Shin-hyuk has been totally fun to watch, and it's been great to see him be there for Hye-jin (although boo!! for him to give that advice to Ha-ri to go for it with Sung-joon- 'course, he didn't know). How he caught Sung-joon staring off at Hye-jin during the meeting and vice versa - while I feel it's probably breaking his heart (I love the little moments where he tells her she's pretty, and you can tell he means it from the look on his eyes, so ? over her!) I think he's too good to end up with backstabbing Ha-ri. I also loved how Editor caught Sung-joon smiling like a fool at Hye-jin's desk...now next week should be interesting, even if he's trying to convince himself that Ha-ri = Hye-jin simply because of that piece. Go with your gut, dude!!!?

Well, hopefully the remnants of Joaquin don't end up making landfall here in the US - it's been bad whenever hurricanes/tropical storms hit in October.

Have a great weekend, yall!! ?

For me, swiping the missing puzzle piece put Ha Ri over the line, and I am now having doubts that this friendship is going to survive much longer.. sad to see, really. There are so few k-dramas that portray real female friends (as opposed to co-conspirators).

Hey Windsun33!

I totally agree...that just was the last straw for me, and I was reallyyy hoping that this awesome female bffs that weren't rivals would continue on. (You're absolutely right on about the dearth of female friends that are truly friends in kdramas, and not those that are silently wielding the hypothetical 'knife' to stab them in the back with.)

Sadly, it doesn't look like there would be much of anything left after this final betrayal. It's been bothering me how Ha-ri decided she was going to pursue Sung-joon, despite the lingering guilt over lying to Hye-jin...but that was lowest of the low. I'm waiting for the instance when Sung-joon realizes she's been Not Hye-jin...and break her heart to smithereens :P

Shin-hyuk gave her a speech that gave her the final push.

Love is crazy and openly allowed. Be crazy. Doesn't everyone love while being that crazy? Instead of complicating it, if you let yourself be crazy, it's simple. Don't look back and regret it, but just go for it.

Required fields are marked *

Hey elric!
I did know that it was because of his speech to her that ultimately convinced her to fully pursue Sung-joon (see my original post)...but I was just saying that I'd been bothered over the course of Ha-ri continuing to meet him and slowly falling for him, prior to Shin-hyuk giving her that 'pep' talk that ultimately led her to pursue Sung-joon.

While Shin-hyuk may have told her with good intentions, I think he might be floored when he finds out who it was. Not his beloved Jackson first love!!! -.-

0

@Tara Oops! Sorry about that :( But I do totally agree with you. Does she know her relationship, which she describes as deeper than between sisters, is at stake here? Maybe she's reasoning that since Hye-jin is beyond pissed at Sung-joon, she feels it's okay. But trying to conjure an explanation to her actions still doesn't justify whatever she's doing. It's really painful to see Ha-ri and Hye-jin interactions after Ha-ri comes home from her "bonding time" with Sung-joon.

On another note, it will be interesting to see Shin-hyuk's reaction once he knows who Ha-ri really is. Maybe we'll see his more serious side.

0

Ha Ri is becoming desperate and is extremely sad (and painful) on how she wants to pursue her first love. She wants to hurt herself. She wants to deceive her friend and even ask Hye-jin to wait for her to tell what's really going on after everything is finish. I want to say it doesn't sound logical but heck, love is crazy!

I'm dreading the angst that will come between Ha-ri and Hye-jin friendship but I'm excited on how Sung-joon will handle his developing feelings for Hye-jin while he decided to keep holding on to the past (a.k.a Ha-ri)

I agree with your assessment about Ha-ri..."wait for me until I can finally tell you" -- yeah, after it's all said and done >:/

I, too, am dreading the angst that will undoubtedly unfold -- but after what Ha-ri did, I won't feel bad for her. I'll feel totally crushed for Hye-jin because she's the one who got dealt with her bff going against the code in pursuing Hye-jin's man, no matter if she asked her to pretend to be her. It was only supposed to be 'til she supposedly left for the UK.

But I, too, am absolutely excited that Sung-joon is falling for Real Hye-jin and seeing glimpses of Past Hye-jin in her (even if her current look just doesn't compute in his mind that it could possibly be Past Hye-jin!). He's noticing the little details aren't adding up, and while he's writing off the similarities in Real Hye-jin for now...I can't wait til he realizes how his gut was nudging him in the right direction! That dang puzzle piece may have "quelled" the doubts for now, but I can't wait to see the mountain of lies completely crumble for Ha-ri.

This week both Hwajeong and Yong-pal ended.

I'm honestly pretty sad with the lack of sense Yong-pal is halfway through the story. It started so strong with lots of potential but it just somehow went to a love story, with baddies that don't really make sense all the way to the end. It really lost me.
Nevertheless, I still love Joo Won and yes I'm glad this show has ended so that he can move on to a better one.

As for Hwajeong, I'm still on episode 42. It's hard to continue once Cha Seung-won is gone, he's really the best thing from the show. I hope the ending is at least decent.
I realized not many beanies talking about this show though, maybe bcos it's just too painfully long.

re: Hwajung, I did try it in the early eps when Cha Seung-won was still around, but after Lee Yeon-hee became the focus of the story I just couldn't.

I feel like the reason why Hwajung doesn't get much attention here or even on the OT isn't just its length, it's that it's just not that good a drama for the most part. I've seen people go nuts for some equally long shows on the OT, but the difference appears to be that those genuinely had something keeping viewers hooked - whether it was the family drama What's With This Family, or Heard It Through the Grapevine earlier this year (HITTG was 30 eps).

Same. Plus the writing got sillier and sillier once the prologue was out of the way. I was willing to accept the craziness that people in Joseon could even think a *woman* was prophesied to sit on the throne, but I could not deal with Lee Yeon-hee swaggering around Japan and the eeeeevil baddies back home plotting evil plots (Kim Yi-young should be banned from writing political sageuk). Lee Yeon-hee was very painful to watch, though. I was one of those people that thought she'd really improved in Miss Korea. I guess sageuk was too much for her.

@littlemuffin. Totally agree, Cha Seung-won was definitely the best part. Did Lee Yeon-hee improve at all as the show went on?

I don't think there's much improvement on Lee Yeon-hee, she's pretty much consistent from episode 1 till where I am now (eps 43). Pretty sad though, because I thought she's pretty good in Miss Korea.
It's not helpful that Seo Kang-joon is also not performing well. Both of them are so bland that I cannot bring myself rooting for them (politically & romantically)

I can totally live without Lee Yeon-hee in sageuks. Fantasy sageuks, 2eps at the most.
Lee Yeon-hee and Shin Se-kyung need writers who knows their limits and a director telling them what to do every step of the way.
If you watch the making of 6 Flying dragons, SSK is being told what to do, how to move etc and Yoo Ah-in is doing his own stuff in the background. She is doing a lot more than she used to do before so I'm pretty nervous about that.

Agreed on Lee Yeon-hee. I finished HwaJung, yes I agree it was more fun when Cha SeungWon was around, but Kim JaeWon did good as king InJo too, just wasn't so attractive of character. I thought story was not exciting enough to pull viewers, and bad acting of leads (Lee YeonHee and Seo GangJun) did not help either.

yeah I would have been far more comfortable if Baek Jin-hee (the original candidate) had taken SSK's role though of course I get that she turned this down for a shot at headlining her own drama and that is more prestigious.

SSK is ok when properly corralled and directed, but I do NOT want SFD to make her basically Smelly Girl in Joseon, if that's all she's capable of.

Personally, I'm still holding on to Hwajeong because since I've watched 43 episodes of it, might as well finish it right?

Hi all:

I can breathe again. Well, kinda. At least some of the harder stuff is over with. Got a story acceptance, awaiting word on another, and word on novel submission. Trying to complete another three stories but those aren’t too pressing. I can actually return to all you sweet beanies.
Dramas:
All is well: This is a daily. The teaser made it seem like a “Let’s Eat” knock-off. I will just say this is one stressing daily drama with the mother of all mean second lead girls. Yet, you can’t really hate her. What a mess she – or maybe her dad—has made of her life with all that bitterness. Out of the frying pan into the messy fire of evil hateful mother-in-law? Girl, you did it to yourself. I’m hoping our Candy is fated for funny none-too-bright-but-really-kind former model. I’m not feeling angsty wounded castoff son of chaebol mistress. For all my love of this show, I can’t watch it. It ties me up in angry knots at nights.
All about my mom: I have lost count of all the secrets and lies in this drama. Good heavens! But am liking it.
Yongpal: Ah me! So it finally ended. Minion’s hateful glee was fun to see. I’ll say that this is the drama that taught me that hatred of a character is enough to pull you through a drama when youre indifferent to the main character. I wanted to see hateful hated character get her comeuppance.
D-Day: Oh my! I’m liking this drama but I got my best biggest laugh of the week when the pregnant lady delivered the rubber twins. Seriously, props dept, couldn’t you have done better?
She was Pretty: Gotta read the recaps. Won’t return until the mixup is cleared.
Waiting to see Merchant, Six Dragons, Noble, Village, Bubblegum.
Have a great weekend, all.

The rubber babies, eesh! The whole pregnant woman thing threw me, because they in effect left her and her husband to fend for themselves because they weren't ob-gyns but then the writers brought the couple back into the story to the clinic anyhoot and the same medical team delivered (and I use that term loosely) the babies after all. I did not get that. It was weird all around. The birth looked like a bunch of in-laws gaping at that end of the table. Now they're transporting the whole kit and kaboodle to safety? Double twin eesh.

Oh, congratulations on your story, Carole. What q great reward after hard work!

I have been postponing watching Reply 1997 for a long time as drama with a high-school backdrop can be quite stereotypical, and I have had enough of Boys Over Flower, Dream High, To the Beautiful you, Playful Kiss, etc..

Just this week, I finally got to watch it and well unexpectedly, it is amazingly awesome!!! I would recommend it as a must-see for those who relish a walk down memory lane to revisit the yesteryears and be pleasantly reminded of the 90s pop icons in a light-hearted way. It is cute and funny in the way it presented the abrasiveness of teenagers in a humorous light. It also helped that the majority of the conversation was conducted in the Busan dialect, which enhanced the image of Jung Eun-ji as a sassy and feisty teeny bopper. It is a big bonus to have various first generation Korean singers being mentioned, like Jo Sung Mo, Lee Hyori, Yangpa, Sechs Kies, etc, and of course HOT was heavily featured, with Eun-ji being an ultimate fangirl of Tony. For me, it has been a great delight to uncover some really nice ballads of the late 90s, such as Jo Sung Mo’s To Heaven, as I much prefer the heartbreakingly morose and mellow ballads Shin Seung Hoon style than the catchy tunes of the loud and flashy k-pop nowadays. There was a scene in which the four male leads wore black suits to jokingly create replicas of the younger version of the 4 gentlemen in A Gentleman’s Dignity, which I find amazingly funny. Well, Seo In-guk was charmingly boyish in this drama, he and Jung Eun-ji made a cute bickering pair, just like Jae Hee and Han Chae-young in Delightful girl Chun-hyang. Probably, many would fall for his boyish charm, as he did also leave a deep impression in Love Rain and Master’s Sun. I think he has great potential to be the up and coming star, like KSH, LJS and JW, though I am not so hot-headed about him as to dig out all his recent dramas to marathon watch in a frenzy. As so far, no one could win me over completely like LJK. To sum up, Reply 1997 is definitely worth watching, well, if you are watching Twenty Again and are enjoying it, then you should go watch Reply 1997 which is even more enjoyable.

Also I just watched The Thieves, it is a bit disappointing despite the star-studded cast and good reviews, probably I was expecting too much. I do like Jun Ji-Hyun and Kim Hye-Soo in the movie, KHS is so pretty, she looks the same as she did more than 10 years ago in Did We Really Love.

Have a nice weekend everyone and happy drama watching!

hey Pebble! Nice to see you joined us on the OT!

I agree about Seo In-gook btw. Answer Me 1997 is awesome, and he is fantastic when he gets a role that gives him anything to do at all. But sadly, he hasn't had the same mainstream success as LJS/KWB/Joo-won outside of cable tv. Still, I hope he continues to get good projects somewhere.

(and while I enjoyed him with Jang Nara and Gong Hyo-jin and he suits the noona-romance perfectly, I think his chemistry with Jung Eunji was off the charts. The almost six year age gap doesn't even register!)

Hi Kiara and Pogo, nice talking to the two of you here :)

I did not see much of Jae Hee's drama too, not even JOJ, I only watched DGCH and one of his movie 3-Iron years ago.

Feel glad that we share the same taste in music. Probably you can check out Sung Si-kyung too, the way he sings can kill!! Though I do not quite understand why he was described as neuk-ki-ha-da (greasy? oily?) on a website I came across.

btw, it's a pity that oppa likes singing those loud techno songs, so there are not many of his songs I really like.

It's getting quite late here, I better go sleep, talk to you again soon. :)

I've jumped into She Was Pretty from episode 4 onwards - it's a weird thing about Hwang Jung-eum dramas, but I never seen to like the first handful of eps and then get hooked once the first couple of weeks are done. It happened with Secret, and with KMHM, and now it's happening here too.

Waiting for Monday (or more accurately, Tuesday since I want subs) because I badly want to watch Sassy Go Go. And to a lesser extent, Six Flying Dragons.

Other than SWP, the kdrama slate is pretty empty. I've only rewatched movies lately. Watched War of the Arrows for the nth time and thought about how annoyed I am that SBS cancelled Goodbye Mr Black and now I won't see Moon Chae-won in a drama this year :/

Also looking forward to some upcoming jdramas, namely 9-ji kara 5-ji made, which is based on a manga that will make any kdrama look progressive for how the hero treats the heroine. (I am looking forward to it because jdramas deviate drastically from manga source material, and I love Ishihara Satomi so I hope this one follows that deviation pattern too. I'll probably throw rocks at my computer if I see the heroine getting locked up and bullied into quitting her job here too)

You're very optimistic about 9-ji kara 5-ji made. The manga was so terrible (I had to drop it), that I'm not expecting anything from the dorama. But, I also can't bear watching Yamapi (can't act) or Ishihara (whose overly kawaii, pretend-innocent characters – I don't even want to think of her in Heartbroken Chocolatier!!!! – turned me off her... she'll have to do some very different characters if I'm going to start watching her again).

Still... I look forward to your verdict...

alua - I may be overly optimistic but jdramas have turned some absolutely infuriating manga into fairly watchable and comparatively-less-enraging dramas. My favourite of the lot that happened to, had to be Zettai Kareshi - terrible manga, but surprisingly watchable drama, with the male leads a LOT less sexually aggressive than they were in the manga (not to mention, they moved the setting out of high school to an actual office - thank god!)

I haven't seen Shitsuren Chocolatier despite my love of Matsujun, Ishihara and even (just as a model and style icon) Kiko Mizuhara - I've heard enough complaints to keep me away. But I did like her in Rich Man, Poor Woman so there is that. And the brief prequel series she did for Attack on Titan, where her character is rather badass and not cutesy at all (even though the movie is terrible) did help.

Don't watch Shitsuren Chocolatier. It's terrible. And she's the worst (her character). Not that the rest of the characters are much better.....

I sort of liked her at the beginning of Rich Man, Poor Woman but by the end I got tired of her. Especially in the special (which I hated). I just want characters with more brains....

Haven't seen her in Attack on Titan, unfortunately SC and RMPW made me really hesitant about watching her in anything. I think it would take a solid character drama (not a rom-com or a blockbuster) to make me give her a try again... It's not totally her fault but let's just say there are much more interesting actresses for me.

warning duly noted, my consumption of Shitsuren Chocolatier is going to remain limited to gifs of Kiko (whom, oddly, I did like as Oguri Shun's sister in Nobunaga Concerto, and as Midori in Norwegian Wood despite her acting not being the strongest).

I watched Ishihara Satome in a different role in a movie about a Japanese doctor in Kenya (Lion in the wind? true story). I guess it was the story that drove the movie and i can overlook the Ishihara you see in jdramas.

Kiara - it is such a great movie though! When Korea does the get-a-beloved-girl-back-from-kidnappers movie, they do it in STYLE. (see also: Ajusshi). I love the sibling relationship, the way the movie established it is what gives heart and urgency to the search for Ja-in, and Park Hae-il and Moon Chae-won are just so great in their roles. Everyone is, really, even with less screen time (oof, Kim Mu-yeol leading the charge at the river bank). And in Park Hae-il's case, very few words - his eyes alone say so much in all those close-ups.

I would love to see Moon Chae-won and Kim Mu-yeol reunite (and while we're at it, can we have a reunion of her and Song Joong-ki too, she even mentioned he was the costar with whom she'd had the best chemistry), but the latest db podcast made the mistake of mentioning Moon Chae-won and Park Hae-jin in the same breath, and now I WANT THAT SO BAD. Possibly even more than I want MCW and oppa!

I agree about the flow kicking in now - I was checking for this through recaps and it seemed really cute, but something just seemed to click this week.

This is not HJE's fault btw, I don't hate her screaming and accept that that was part of the character. If anything, I appreciate the fact that she is so unafraid of looking silly, and never seems to treat even her most absurd roles with anything less than 100 percent sincerity.

She Was Pretty- I enjoy it but as with everything I'm watching it slowly.

I've been on my first real anime kick in oh 5 years lately which has slowed down my drama watching considerably, well that and waiting for D-Day subs on Viki. I think there are all kinds of men, and all kinds of women... and ultimately, we are all just humans.

If you need a reminder of that, that despite there being some awful people, there are also some pretty decent men (and women), read a few Humans of New York posts.

Just yesterday there was one about a Greek guy who went to Australia many decades ago and had nothing, so now, remembering his past, he's bringing bread from his bakery to the refugees in Kos every day....

Gaksital is my favorite. Loved the color saturation, after all, this was taken from a manga, right and was a perfect choice for this show. It was all noir film techniques, alternating fast action with slow emotional moments. And the acting with just eye movements - marvelous. The story between the two men, one a redemption arc and the other the slow descent into madness. Loved how the police were so inept til the last episode, when it mattered, and then they succeeded, which was much more shocking. The whole thing was beautifully written, directed and acted.

I will spend sometime on weekend to watch Noble My Love. I want to watch SungHoon again in a new drama. Lol can't believe I finished watching A New Tale of Gisaeng just because of SungHoon???

Having a YongPal withdrawal symptoms, this drama sure have haters and lovers but I don't care? I am preparing myself to watch secret of achiara next wee . Hopefully it would be great!

Twenty Again : Can't wait to watch it tomorrow. Perfect drama to spend on weekend,?

She Was Pretty : I am watching but just for fun. Nothing really attract me, or made this drama special but I like Park So Joon and SiWon. I just prefer HwangJeungEum in melodrama. Can't brain her character here?

I Have A Lover : It was so painful because it was cancelled last week. ? hopefully this week epi will be subbed faster.?

Lastly, Kim So Eun will have a new web drama with a member of Exo. Wait cannot remember his name. This girl sure doesn't take a long break ? I welcome her with a new project, but hopefully she gets her proper lead role in big station /cable next year.?

Happy Friday!

I just want to talk She Was Pretty for a minute. Let’s count the many things that make a kdrama a kdrama that have shown up in SWP:

The sentimental meaning behind passcodes
Wishing on an eyelash
Comforting back patting
White truck of doom (After all, the two leads were crouching in the middle of the road in the rain – who could pass up that opportunity)?
Childhood mother related trauma
“Ugly” stepmother
“That scared me.”
Misunderstandings (Nothing else serves as a kdrama catalyst more than this)
Lies – more than misunderstandings
Cold CEO
Warm chaebol posing as an everyday worker
The meaning behind those ever so high heels
Bromance
The less common but equally lovable Womance
The relationship umbrella
The secret expressions of “care” – How utterly adorable was that onion face that Sung Joon drew that actually looked just like him? Also, putting a bandaid on the other person, anonymously bringing porridge to the passed out sick person , etc.
I am sure there are others, feel free to add to the list.

But the thing is I LOVE them all in SWP. The four leads are killing this – it’s a lovely romcom with all the things you hate/love in it.

Ha Ri’s line of the day: “It’s my goddess philosophy - I have to have everything I love.” Here's to keeping the womance alive and well and honest. Hye Jin and Ha Ri, you can do it! ♥

uncaring siblings
secret crush
pulling someone out of harms way landing her in your arms
eccentric boss
three months rule
going on a trip together
thoughtfully standing in front of the mirror half naked

but to weigh those up there are also new things:

seemingly cool guy being all absent-minded and dorky when he is concentrating hard
and I especially like that Shin Hyuk is nonchalant about doing all those ridiculous- pervy-weird things. usually drama characters are so uptight and restricted and go by rules or at least think twice, but he is like ... "Whatever! Oh, a spoiled kimbap! Oh, underwear!"
face mask with cat stasche haha

Shin Hyuk is the comic relief in the very best sense. Also the catalyst for getting the truth out between Hye Jin and Seol Joon (although what in the world is his secret?) He was soooo awesome as the fake boyfriend and waited with Ha Ri for the no-show guy she wanted to send the "I'm with someone else" message to. Siwon is just great at this role (as he was in King of Dramas).

I thought of it as 'fever' mainly due to the revived psychological trauma. I'm not sure I've ever had proper fever from extreme stress, but I certainly did have all the symptoms on several occasions (i.e. shivering, cold, not being able to stand, burning body as if i had fever etc)

Lol I actually didn't think of him getting sick that badly because he was exposed to rain. I should have, it's such a cliche.

Being piggybacked home when drunk, how could this be left out! Usually it is guy piggybacking girl home, or guy piggybacking guy, but Hero defied the norm in having Yoon So-yi piggybacking Lee Jun-ki home. It was funny when his sister made this comment about "him not being anything precious", why was Yoon So-yi still had him on her back when talking at the doorstep, and upon hearing this, Yoon So-yi immediately threw him down hastily in embarrassment.

Also, there are scenes of boy wearing shoe for girl so tenderly and gently. The one in Winter Sonata with BYJ wearing school shoes for CJW while she sat on the fence is the most classic! Also, there are scenes of shoe wearing in drama even as recent as SWWTN. :)

Anyone watch the Chinese drama Boss and Me? What a lovely romantic drama! I read about it over at Koalas a while ago but only watched it now. I enjoyed the first 15 or so episodes so much that I watched them again before continuing to finish the drama.
I love the beautiful hands that some actors have and adore the main lead's hands here (rings, bracelet notwithstanding). He also has a lovely speaking voice - and great looks as well. He has some lovely kisses with the female lead in the drama, not to mention the tender way he always holds her face or pinches her cheeks!
This is my second mainland Chinese drama. I enjoyed Sealed with a kiss as well. Both of these dramas have some lovely haunting OSTs.
Can anyone recommend some other modern Chinese dramas?

At the moment I feel a little bit lost in what to watch after finishing Oh My Ghostess. I laughed a lot and loved the acting, and both the chemistry and skinskip between the leads. I hadn't read anything about it before, but I was saying to myself from episode 3 that Sung-jae was a creep.

I've decided to try I Remember You but sadly I've seen a few spoilers and I haven't finished the first episode.

Otherwise I might finish Nice Guy or Sercret (tried it after KMHM. It feels like a dramatic plot I might enjoy, but I couldn't get through the first episode. It felt slow and I kind of disliked HJE's character... Should give it another try, since sometimes you need to get trough that first episode to enjoy it)

All the rest feels like a lot of waiting -- either I'm waiting for the next episode (Twenty Again, watched it all in a day. You go No Ra!) subs, (D-Day, though they have finished EP 4 now) or the premiere. I'm currently interested in Sassy Go Go, Village and Reply 1988.

I decided one day to finally read the Cheese in the Trap webtoon, and it was so good! Read it all in three days, and had to read summaries and translated scripts for the newer chapters, but it was woth it. Now I'm looking forward to the drama version so much. The only bad part is that before I could laugh at all the casting drama, but now when I'm invested in the story I'm worried if it's going to be good or not.

At the moment I'm also watching the third season of the Thai series Hormones. I've followed it since the first season aired and am so looking forward to this one. Once again it's waiting for episodes and subs :P I hope Dao and Koi make up and I am excited to what is going to happen to all the new characters this season! It's one of my all-time favorite teen series and I can't recommend it enough.

Am I the only one who wishes there were dramas about older people? (pretending for a moment all those home dramas geared towards bored middle-aged housewives don't exist--I mean good, respectable productions haha). I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a drama starring skilled actors like Kim Kap-soo, or even someone older like Lee Soon-jae?...or is that just me lol? idk, old people have lives too, they're often just as adorable, and veteran actors routinely blow the young uns out of the water even in bit parts, and I feel like that would force dramaland to be a bit more mature about stuff. We're talking whole generations of massively talented people who can't really get leads anymore (unless they're the villain)...I would love to see what a grumpy old man revenge thriller would look like...or a romance between widowers or between an old married couple thinking through divorce, or something (how cool would it be if Kdrama would stop riffing off western rom com tropes for a while and riff off western stuff like Amour, all I'm saying)...or even a black comedy about end-of-life planning or assisted living.

You get some kfilms about older people (Revivre, My Love Don't Cross that River) but for dramas, I think you'd have to branch out into Japanese – and even there stories about older people just pop up occasionally (and if they do, it seems to be people in their 40's, 50's which is really mid-life).

That's really interesting! I'll have to trawl through some J-doramas--I know their film industry has a long and gloried history of dealing with aging, too (Ikiru is one of my favorites). I'm fine with midlife dramas, too. Thanks for helping me out a bit. :) I find American TV is not always as youth-centric, either, but that's probably because it's all about concept shows, rather than romances.

idk, I just get tired of watching young people and the kind of storytelling priorities they bring out, plus most of my favorite actors are much too old and regularly get stuck playing second (or like...10th?) fiddle to actors I don't respect half as much. I recognize that's just the way it works, and not just on Korean TV, either, but I can dream lol.

LOL, true. Granny, kids and grand kid all have love lines there.
It's a slow, but ok. I love watching the sisterhood of the 2 women: the wife and the mistress, slowly evolved throughout the drama.

There are quite a few dramas with older people. There are very few of them that portray them as anything but feeble minded idiots, domineering bitches, or evil chaebol white-collar gangsters. They are far too often portrayed as almost childlike in roles other than those mentioned above.

I guess that's true lol, but typically the older person is not the main focus. I'm talking about dramas explicitly about old people, as opposed to them having bit or side roles in the story. If that just means dramas sticking to their native patterns, I'm still game for some shows *about* grumpy chaebol grandpas, scheming chaebol moms (there are more than a few great ones like that already--Flames of Ambition stands out, and the parents were by far the best thing about Grapevine), poor old women who've outgrown their Candy appeal, frustrated housewives, grandmas having affairs. Personally, I'd like to imagine wonderful human dramas featuring grandparents as the main characters, but I'll take what I can get.

If you haven't watch "Mother" or "Poetry" then you should. Beautiful movies led by 2 amazing 65+ year old actresses.

Director/writer/producer Lee Chang Dong basically brought Yun Jung Hee back from retirement to star in Poetry and she was terrific in it just like Kim Hye Ja in Mother.

Two of my all time favorite movies.

*MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR MOTHER* (anyone who hasn't seen that movie should stop reading and go watch it lol)

I have many thoughts about its ending. Hopefully this won't get too long haha, sorry in advance for my rambling...

I thought it was really twisted, but absolutely perfect given the tone of the movie. It really disturbed me, but I got a lot out of it too--I feel like you could discuss it forever and come up with so many different things to take away from it. The thing that stayed with me the most was what it said about her relationship with her son--that her willingness to do anything for him was not redemptive or affirming, it was dangerous and sad and effed up and destructive. Like, the fact that her son thought she knew he was guilty the whole time and was getting him off despite that (when she genuinely believed in his innocence and imo killed that homeless guy out of denial), AND knew that she had killed that guy for him too (which is when I think she accepted that he'd really done it)...the fact that they pinned it on another poor handicapped boy who didn't have someone like her to stand up for him...and the fact that she decided to forget it all and dance away her pain (which was an amazing image to close out with--you just get the feeling that the entire movie could happen all over again)...it's all adds up into something really painful but really unforgettable too.

SPOILERS

ALERT

So I typed this long reply to your comment then it disappeared on me :(.

I have so many thoughts that I sometimes confused myself lol. Can a mentally ill person kill someone intentionally? It was clear that she provoked him.

Bong Joon Ho is such an amazing director I felt traces of Memories of Murder here and there and I love the fact that nothing is clear except for a mother that would do anything for her son.

At first I was a bit judgemental with the ending because I felt that they both did wrong and there was no justice for the girl and an innocent person went to jail but it worked out from the mother's perspective. If she dies, go to jail, remember etc her son will die so she chose to save him and I finally understood why she did what she did.

You a going to love Poetry too. It was inspired by a rl event. Can't wait to hear what you think about it.

0

*SPOILERS*

That's such a good point, I'm not sure he can be considered "guilty" in the traditional sense either, but at the same time, as you say, there's no justice for the girl that he killed...idk. I definitely got the sense that he didn't know what killing a person really meant, given how he guessed she'd killed that guy all on his own, with no internal struggle over accepting that his mom was now a murderer, and the matter-of-fact way he returned her needle case. I think it's kind of a no-win situation. Which is so wonderful and refreshing to me, because it takes a very stereotypical story (mother rescues mentally challenged son from murder charges), and then turns everything on its head in the last half hour because he's actually *guilty*. But it's not that simple, because he can't understand that what he did was wrong. And along the way the assumption that a mother's unconditional love for her child is necessarily a good thing gets tested. Aaaaah it's such a thinky ending. I could talk about it forever lol. Totally going to watch Poetry next chance I get now :)

0

SPOILER
I don't think the extend of his mental illness was explained but yes, he is physically capable of killing someone but not intentionally.
The twist at the end was unexpected. I was blown away to be honest. Then, I remember that this is Bong's movie, it doesn't follow any familiar formula.
I have so much respect for Kim Hye-ja. So refined in her craft, it was an absolute treat to watch her.

I think the reason why there would be a handful of elderly-driven dramas would be that at that age, they would have had gone through all the dramas in their lives that they would rather have the pretty and young to remind them of or escape to the past. And with studies showing that post mid-50s people are on the higher end of the happiness scale, dramas they won't need, would they? My mum, who introduced me to kdramas in her mid 70s, liked idol dramas.

I think you're right. It's funny, but I feel like I'd be interested in watching dramas about older people for similar reasons to old people who want to watch about younger people. idk, I think it comes from my desire as a young person to confront the idea of aging, to see the beauty in parts of life I have yet to experience, get some kind of reassurance/perspective on life that can only come with age, etc. Plus I just think old people are adorable haha.

That's a nice sentiment @juniper. I think we should have friends across age-group really. when i was in my early 30s, i'd hang out with consultants who were late 40s to 50s. then as the years we actively worked together. Now i think that the enjoyable parts of my career were those where i was the youngest. Now, finding old people adorable, please enjoy that. as years advance, there are many who can turn quite grumpy, hence that great age divide.

haha I'm pretty grumpy as a young person so I can only imagine how much worse I'm going to get as I grow older. But I agree! Making friends with people of different ages is great and gives you a lot of perspective on life. It sounds like you had a good relationship with your coworkers :) As for me, I've always had an easier time getting along with people much older than me, than people my own age.

Why would anyone do that? (WTH moments in K-dramas)

My latest rant is about a couple of really weird things that show up in almost every k-drama.

1. Fighting/arguing over who will carry the grocery bag, food, or boiling pots of noodles. This nearly always results in the groceries rolling down the street, the food being spilled (along with the usual broken dish that seems almost supernatural in it's ability to inflict damage to the heroin roughly equal to a paper cut from origami. which then results in a trip to the hospital or breaking out the huge first aid kit).

The absolute stupidest example I have seen of this was in episode 8 of "I am your (idiot) teacher", where he was fighting over who should move the pot of boiling noodles from the counter to the table, about 4 feet away. This of course resulted in him spilling boiling noodles all over his hands.

2. Family members that walk in or come home and demand that someone get them a glass of water. In several instances I have seen this happen when the person asking was standing right next to the glasses and the water bottle (which is always filled from bottled water, never tap water). And then of course it has to be served on a tray. Who in hell would ever bother to put a glass of water on a tray to carry it 10 feet for some domineering ass that can't just reach over and pour his own water?

LOL! Or maybe they are chaebols who just cannot pour water for themselves in the presence of maids. It would make the maids feel bad!!

Or they have the strange lack of peripheral vision illness that strikes leads in particular, repeatedly and semi-transparent containers merge into the foreground/background. :)

Well, the fight over some duties, again, is, per se, a valid social statement. It happens a lot in real life, even though mostly with less "visual" situations (and unfortunately, writers are lazy). A more dialogue-y form is the "formal/informal" language discussion.

The hospital trip that follows in case of a tiny injury here (or from several other overused tropes), however ...
I'm at loss. I sincerely don't understand the concept of K-drama healthcare.

(1) Food. Healthy food is extremely important. And by healthy food, K-drama means traditional Korean food. Foreign food, while being expensive, makes you sick. Ramyeon, while being romantic (or indicating hard working characters), makes you ugly.
Not eating huge amounts of food for every meal makes you collapse from malnutrition. And every second meal -- even Korean traditional food -- will cause indigestion.

(2) Booze. Drinking a lot is extremely important for your health. If you don't drink two bottles of soju every night, something is wrong with you. Three bottles of soju, on the other hand, are very unhealthy. Make sure you never drink alone, because drinking alone can cause drunkenness and plot points.

If you end up dead drunk in a police station or hospital too often, this is a sign that you need to improve your social circle. Some people might think that they should cut back on the booze, but they are wrong.
You didn't end up unconscious in the hospital because you drank too much but because you don't have enough friends who piggy-back you to your house.

(3) Minor injuries. Minor injuries like paper cuts are lethal, they need to be treated immediately. Your boss will understand that you have to rush to the next hospital. Your baby daughter can stay alone at home for a few hours. Your life is in danger here. Make sure that the person who treats you is of opposite sex.

(4) Serious diseases like, say, liver cirrhosis don't need medical attention. Something like liver cirrhosis is bad luck, but there is nothing you can do to prevent it from happening anyway (especially nothing in relation to point (2) above). You should save the money from medical screening, never mention treatment, as this money is needed to treat your children's frequent paper cuts. If you happen to be forced into a medical check-up and the doctor finds some disease, just die peacefully in a corner without telling your family and loved ones. Because that's what trust means.

2. Family members that walk in or come home and demand...

Hi Jon. I don't think the minor ailment trope is all that far from the truth in Korea. On one of my trips there, I was feeling a bit unwell, felt as if I had a bit of a cold coming on. I texted one of my Korean friends to tell her and immediately she phoned me and asked if I had gone to the hospital. I of course replied that I hadn't and had no intention of going to the hospital, whereupon she offered to travel up to me (she was in a different city) and escort me to the hospital. I was a bit taken aback as all I had was a few sniffles. She was deadly serious though. People generally the world over are pretty similar, and Koreans themselves are lovely people, so friendly and welcoming, but sometimes they really are quite different.

I've been given the impression by Korean friends that what gets translated as " go to the hospital" is much closer to the western experience of "go to the clinic" or "go see a doctor". "Go to the hospital" sounds so dire to me and is generally something I'd have to be forced to do in an ambulance, right?

More excellent points. The problem I - and probably many other non-Koreans - have is: How much is actually real? I am sure the "bring me water" thing is to enforce some kind of social hierarchy, but how can it still persist in this day and age?

On the other hand, an editorial I read in a Korean paper called Korea "The last bastion of rampant 19th century Confucianism.". I suspect that plays into a lot of these common tropes.

Well, the "tap water" thingy depends on the quality of the tap water, of course. There are some countries, even developed countries, that do not provide drinking water quality in their tap water reliably. Not sure about South Korea though ...

Very often, the "bring me water" scene seems very similar to a "bring me a bear" scene from 20th century western media: social role setup.

This indeed is interesting; that is why there is such a considerable following to kdramas from international fans. they just do things differently in korea (at least things we normally don't encounter in our mundane lives). Your astute observations on health care reminded me of the story of one country which opened up to korean aid because of first lady's love for korean dramas. i hope though she doesn't push to imitate the inefficiencies of the korean or the hilarity of some stuff for that matter. You know, just this morning my husband had to apply a plaster to his chest and he did it all by himself with the help of a mirror. I just sat a few metres away and had my breakfast LOL. And of course I thought and I'm sure many of you may be thinking.... in kdramas, that would have been the golden opportunity for the female lead to lean in and carefully apply the plaster so that her face is inches away from the male leads. I don't think it's ever a daughter who demands to be served a glass of water, right? Unless there are servants lol.

I think it must be considered rude to put a cup or glass down in front of someone, beverages always come on trays in Korea even in the workplace. Although from dramas it does look like westernized coffee shops have changed that.

Chinese/Taiwanese drama recommendations:

For contemporary dramas, try Queen of SOP - it stars the same male lead as Boss & Me, & features a similar office romance setting. Also very light & breezy.

Try My Sunshine for a nice take on how an estranged college couple meet again as adults. I enjoyed the college flashbacks more than the reunion though.

Try also Taiwanese drama "In a Good way" - it's like the Taiwanese version of Reply 1994/7 in a college setting. Sweet romance, a wonderful bunch of college friends, and great character development. The only thing I didnt like much about the show was how the pacing slowed considerably after the leads get together. But they do take quite a while to get together.

Another cute Taiwanese rom com is Pleasantly Surprised. The acting is average, but there is lovely chemistry between the leads and it's set in a restaurant (yay!). The female lead also isn't your typical Candy heroine and the male lead is really, really cute.

For period dramas/ chinese sageuk:
Try Zhen huan zhuan (Legend of zhen huan) - one of the most exquisitely produced period dramas in dramaland. Lovely set design, great acting all around, and lots and lots of palace intrigue.

Although I'm kind of hesitant with the recommendations, a few oldies

Down With Love - starring Jerry Yan and Ella Chen who have absolutely lovely chemistry. He starts out as the typical mean male lead, but only in the very beginning, throughout the rest of the show he's actually like the typical lovable, supportive second lead, and it's delightful. And sigh, he really is gorgeous in that show.

My Lucky Star - this one is old-school, kind of 'soapy', with a lot of unpredictable twists and turns, but very cute and extremely addictive. Only when the last ep is over, does one realize how well the whole thing was done. It's like a light, rom-com version of autumn concerto, in fact I had to check if the writers were the same, and it turned out that they're not and that my lucky star was made before autumn concerto.

Really hesitant with this one but I think it's sooo underrated - I want to become a hard persimmon. The main lead was a 17 y.o. rookie so his acting is not good, and the 2nd couple was pretty boring to me, but the unexpected OTP (really not obvious from the start, and i think it's worth mentioning/spoiling b/c people might give up before it happens, and that's when the show becomes good) was EXPLOSIVE, and the way their relationship developed absolutely riveting! I think it's the only true alpha female-beta male show that I've ever seen. All those who liked Hi my sweetheart with show luo and rainie should give this one a try to see how many elements were copied. I should point out however that as it progresses you'll be crying a lot, and by the time it ends you'll want to slap it first, and then hug it :)

Always late to the party...looks like all the other guests have gone home. I'll just sip from this leftover half-bottle of soju. Sigh. [Actually gets up to make a bloody mary.]

Kdramaland drought continues, so I filled in the time with some British documentaries about fancy houses and gardens, then marathoned Twenty Again and kept up with She Was Pretty. The combination of these three before bedtime made for some weird dreams. Apparently deep down I think that I'm a lost heir to a fabulous British estate, and my would-be husband Lee Sang-yoon is over there waiting for me, if only I can find the proper documents! In my dreams!

Must return to dreamland soon, because tomorrow morning I need to get up early to go shovel elephant poop. That's right, elephant poop! I actually won a lottery to go to the local zoo and shovel composted poop into my truck to be placed lovingly on my flower beds and lawns later. It's a thing here; very popular. People are crazy about gardening, and I haven't had much luck with my nutrient-depleted soil, so am hoping this does the trick. I tried to recruit others to come help shovel, but no luck there. I can't imagine why! And I'm sure the neighbors are going to love the delicate aroma! But hey, with any luck and a little rain, next spring it's going to look like my British estate!

Which one? You mean the first one in which you asked a couple of questions?

Your blog? - Since it is yours, write what you love. You make felts, how about a section on that with pictures of your work.

You do some writing - how about sharing a bit of your storylines, or get more plot points or ideas from your readers?

How about covering dramas that DB doesn't? Short summaries or little reviews?

As for dramas that improved... I sadly have not noticed improvement in 2nd halves of shows much. There might have been one I thought of at the time, but I cannot recall it now!!! Sorry. :)
