If people think Injo is a horrible king in "Hwajung", you should see his great-great grandfather Seonjo in "Book of Corrections". Oh vey - he joins a small list of characters in any medium whom I want to punch in the face repeatedly. Then slap with a rotting fish.

Both have something in common - They did not grow up in the palace. Both became the king by reluctant choice (because previous King did not have any son, or was thrown out). SunJo was terrible (Admiral Lee :(), but he was very lucky to have many great scholars/generals under him. InJo was not that lucky -so he ended up being humiliated by China.

Is it worth the stake?
Thanks for ur reccs!

I've thoroughly enjoyed Hwajung. It seems to adhere fairly closely to history and the OST is beautiful. The acting is super and uou learn how corruption in the power elite brought Korea to her knees.

Is there anything worth watching on right now?

Yong-Pal
I think I was really misled about the show. Before episode 5, I was under the impression that this is a comedy making fun of badly written, pretentiously directed wannabe-slick shows. Now I have to conceed that it simply is a badly written, pretentiously directed wannabe-slick show.

(I really fear for the health of the sound director, btw. The only place where one would think that Sarah McLachlan's version of "Angel" is not soppy enough and you have to go for the Westlife cover is a hyperglycaemia-induced coma-dream.)

Virtual bride/Eccentric DiL/Taming MiL
Now this show found its tone as a variety-"hybrid" very early and steadily and runs with it (unlike, you know, "Producer"). It uses variety-style camera, deliberately bad lowbrow acting and overall cheap setups, creating a rather unique and recognisable style.

Story/character-wise, this is one of those shows that make me much more open to the idea of thermonuclear annihilation of South Korea.

A Wife's Credentials
With absolutely nothing interesting on the screen right now -- and after the updated recommendations from last week -- I gave this one a go and marathoned it in 6 days.

I love slow, thorough pace. Slow pace is very difficult to get right, because you cannot get away with even minor flaws in your plot line and your characterisations, and it is more demanding to keep the audience' attention. If it is down right, it can be fantastic (see, for example, "Grapevine" or "Yuna's Street").

This show is very slow (both scene pace and plot pace), and it is very thorough. In addition: fantastic acting by the whole ensemble, great camera work, unusual and efficient soundtrack (that gets a just a tiny little repetitive later on).

Overall, a 7.5/10 rating by me, that's a top 10 show on my list (ahead of, for example, a great show like "Oh My Ghostess").

However, I cannot really say I enjoyed the show. I don't think I ever rooted as strongly against the main couple as I did with this drama.

I'm so-so on Yongpal because the speed it moves by is...dizzy. I didn't watch the other 2 shows, though, but your post makes me want to like this repeatedly.

On the other hand, here I am, waiting impatiently for Twenty Again after the end of Oh My Ghostess ;w;

Thank goodness! I thought maybe there was something wrong with me because I am not excited about anything right now. I usually anticipate at least one each week. I am even wait for 'Mrs. Cop' to get more episodes out before I pick it up again.

I dropped Mrs. Cop after those disastrous first two episodes. I did glean from the recaps that it picked up after that, but now seems to be uncertain what kind of drama it wants to be and who the lead(s) are, so that strikes me as being all over the place. Meaning, I've got no regrets about having dropped it. Just not good enough that the police force isn't as stupid as it was in ep 1+2, I need focus in the narrative and characters too.

I am with you. The only shows on my "must watch weekly" are variety shows, Hwajung and Young-Pal. And the only reason the last 2 are still on there is because I need to watch something. (I like the actors in Young-Pal. I just can't buy the story any more.)

I'm thinking of rewatching some of my past favorites. My husband doesn't understand it. (Why would you watch something you've already seen?) But I reread books too. He's more of a sports guy. And he never rewatches games. So he doesn't understand me at all.

Rewatch/Reread
Haha, same here. I love to re-read books after a few years, some of them at a certain "frequency". For example, i read Eco's "Il pendolo di Foucault" approximately once every six years.

My wife thinks I'm crazy. However, I got her to rewatch Jim Jarmusch's "Night On Earth" with me this time (after 5 years) and she definitely enjoyed it again. We made an appointment to watch it again in 2020.

I'm not invested in any kdramas right now.

Almost all recent and current kdramas have pissed me off with bad writing or excessive wishy-washy plots/characters.

I'm only watching Scholar Who Walks The Night for Lee Soo Hyuk. I'm very impressed that he's managed to steal my attention from the LJK "pretty".

I'm currently watching Genius 4, Law Of The Jungle and King of Mask Singer. Infinite Challenge and 1N2D are also my faves...Running Man....not so much lately, which makes me SAD.

I just started watching Immortal Songs from the beginning and will eventually get caught up. I totally can't get the Song Chang Sik song "Why Call Me?" as re-made by Jo Jang Hyeok and Skull into an AWESOME reggae/rap song out of my head!

I am looking forward to Song Joong Ki's post Army abs debut!!

Yes all the above. It's just really wannabe slick show which fails miserably and i still can't see what so badass about Cynthia aside from she is a cool woman. The romance is too fast paced that i went out from hmm.. what?! They are already in love?! Sure, Joo Won and KTH do have some chemistry, but it's not exploding with chemistry or anything to make us believe the romance that comes out of nowhere.

It was speedy for me cause Kdrama used to give all hints they could possibly gave and i expected it to be that way.

I mean it's not a Jdrama with subtle romance that they are implying it rather vaguely but then, we still got it.

That just one scene. And like i said, i don't see any explosive sparks to make me believe such a fleeting scene and even the saving scene. I took the saving scene as a sense of camaraderie. They are 'friends' and i believed they are growing in their feelings to each other but not to the extent of acting on it so soon with such stakes that they had.

No, just no.

Yong Pal saving Yeo Jin, i got it... Crying... okay i understand why you would. You have feelings for her. First half of the 7th ep, i've got no complain. Then it just went insane in the romance term for episode 8.

I am NOT feeling the love between them at all. I have the hardest time with a kdrama that I want to like, I try to like, but they make it so I can't like it. The gangsters in traction, boring. NOt to mention other hospital boredoms. Oh, and Paul from 49 Days who I loved to death, I can't bear to see you as brother gone bad. Cynthia, you were a breath of fresh air.

Jon,

Your post made me smile ear to ear! Too funny and spot-on in many respects. Thank you!

I loved Grapevine and Yuna's Street and have struggled to watch some shows such as Yongpal. I just can't get interested and from your comment, makes me feel like I am dodging a bullet like I did with Doctor Stranger and Basketball. Thank you #2! LOL I was sorry to read that lovable and talented PD Jin Hyuk was attached to Doctor Stranger though his work on it seems to be a bright spot trying to make sense of a otherwise questionable story/plot.

I did enjoy Oh My Ghostess - loved the actors in it and they did a good job with the material.

I will watch/marathon I Remember You as it had some good reviews, but other than that, I am stuck for what to watch. Surely a drama/show slump for me and that may also be because I have been watching Kdramas since Oct 2012. A bit early for burn out, but may be I am less tolerant of some troupes which are now so overused to me.

I am always open to suggestions!

Happy Friday to all!! :)

Yong-pal is the #1 show in Korea right now. But that alone does not make it perfect - I like the show, but once in a while it tosses in those really jarring scenes where you just go WTF. But it is getting much better ratings than Heirs ever got, that alone is enough to make me love it :D

Virtual Bride I love - just because it is so freaking stupid, with all the stupidest people in Korea making all the dumbest decisions ever. I am not sure if it was intentional, but I look on it as a mass parody of nearly all daytime and weekend k-dramas.

Seriously, the ratings??? Why? I cannot see anything that makes this show special on any possible dimension. It's better than "Heirs", sure, but that's not the biggest hurdle to climb.

That's the only way to watch it, I think. The weird effect this show (and most family dramas) have on me is that I hate the supposed "victim" characters even more and I start to enjoy their sufferings a lot.

Ratings - it is Summer season, so less real competition. They usually save the better shows for the longer nights in Fall/Winter.

Victims - I somewhat agree - 3/4 of the time the reason the victim is a victim is because they are so freaking stupid. Virtual Bride example is the teacher girl married to a worthless slob with a totally bitch MIL - but all she does to counter it is to get even more sycophantic. Any normal person would have divorced years ago.

Sometimes I wish these self-made victims would just pull out a big gun and blow their worthless family away, and then move to Costa Rica.

Fear not, I'm asking out of curiousity, I've got a very soft spot for Costa Rica.

Jon, I too am impressed that I am slightly fixated on Virtual Bride- but it is fast paced, easy to digest, and it pokes fun at lame set ups in variety shows. Perfect for late summer viewing

Yeah, now that Oh My Ghostess is finished the only show I'm live-watching is Yong-pal. It's...not quality, but I did find it entertaining if wildly uneven, but this week's eps pacing dragged and it really looks like the live-shoot might turn this into Doctor Stranger 2.0

I actually don't mind the slump though! No good shows on-air = more time to catch up on the huge drama backlog. Which of these would you guys recommend (other suggestions are welcome as well):

1) Heard it through the Grapevine: heard nothing but good things about this one, but it is kinda long

2) I Remember You: Was the ending solid? Is it a good mystery series?

3) My Beautiful Bride: Love action/noir thrillers, but I dropped Heartless City because the amount of secretly-undercover-mobsters and corrupt cops became too ridiculous to handle.

Required fields are marked *

Btw. I was among those who were disappointed by the Oh My Ghostess final episodes. Especially the last episode was very lazily written.

Grapevine
Yes, it's long and the pace is relatively slow. But it's so incredibly multi-dimensionally good that you can enjoy it even if only 10% of its strengths actually appeal to you.

I Remember You
"good mystery": Don't ask me. I'm so incredibly picky when it comes to mystery that I don't think there ever was a K-drama writer with the skills to write a plot that might be satisfying to me. It's not their fault, it's mine.

My Beautiful Bride
I dropped it when the female lead MacGuffin was abducted five times within 15 minutes of the show.

Required fields are marked *

Thanks for the response! I will definitely give Grapevine a go. Yeah I found the finale of Oh My Ghostess a bit too pat and neat, but the show and cast built up enough goodwill that I can give it a fond wave goodbye.

Hmm for high mystery standards do you mean the classic fair-play mystery plot? In which case I agree--I can't think of a single kdrama which follows that. Which is actually kind of surprising, considering Japan produces a ton of fair-play mystery fiction. But I think a writer like Park Yeon-seon could pull it off--her plotting is pretty tight, and the first half of White Christmas has some Christie-like elements.

0

Required fields are marked *

I Remember You. It's not mind-blowing but it has a nice flow on how it reveal the mysteries of the show. It dwells more on emotional and character development, and has a good and well-pace story.

In my case, the ending was pretty realistic. I love reading mystery and crime-thrillers, and I found everything about it (not just the ending but the entire series) very refreshing.

Never watched Healer. I missed it when it aired, and afterwards the hype was too huge for me and scared me off.
I became a little bit hesitant to watch shows with that big a hype about them. I still try it sometimes, but it usually doesn't end well (KMHM, "Mask" as recent examples).

0

@Jon: I am on the same boat regarding KMHM and Mask; not enthusiastic about KMHM, save for Ji Sung's performance, and positively disappointed by Mask. About Healer, my fangirl-free assessment (for the last time I think; this horse has probably been beaten long enough)

If you go into it for the action/mystery you will probably be disappointed; the baddies are a little Disney at the end of the day, the huge mystery backstory is resolved in a rather anticlimactic tone, and the final showdown is anything but original. This ain't Heartless City.

For the rest, however, Healer was refreshing in the almost complete lack of kdrama clichés, and I would advise watching it just to see two people behaving like rational adults about their relationship, with no denial, contrived conflict or noble idiocy; in fact, I think the writer liked to create those situations, then show how *not* to take the expected path.

Then, you also get good performances from everybody, including the leads. Don't let all the fangirl drooling over Ji Chang Wook put you off; he is a proper actor. And I had never warmed to Park Min Young before, but I just loved her Young Shin. Somewhere I read that this time she had stopped obsessing over looking pretty on camera and had just gone for it, and it shows. Both are likable and well-rounded characters.

Bottom line: I say forget about the hype, lower your expectations to avoid disappointment, then go ahead and watch it. You won't probably share in the collective fan hysteria, but I think you will be entertained, and at the very least, it will be an interesting exercise in comparison. Would be good to hear what you have to say afterwards :)

0

@Delurker

Thank you very much, that was very helpful! I'll put it on the list. As most of the currently airing shows are not particularly enticing, I might be able tackle it in the very near future.

Still no k-dramas for me, as sadly none of the ones airing right now interest me (or they are too crappily executed).

Did manage to watch a few episodes of 37.5°C no Namida, which is small, but quite lovely drama about an insecure woman trying to find her place in life after having been totally neglected and emotionally abused as a child by her family. Nothing spectacular, but I'm enjoying it. I'm shipping Mokomichi Hayami with the lead, but it's a bit ambiguous.

Also started Tamiou. I already had an inkling from The Light Only Shines There and Princess Jellyfish, but Tamiou confirms it – Suda Masaki is just brilliant. Watched two episodes, I'm finding this drama hilarious. Some find it a bit stupid (Suda's original character), but I can't complain yet. I think the drama is just trying to emphasise how different the two leads are. Cracks me up – Suda strutting about as the prime minister, and his father in fluffy blue cardigans, hugging his knees. (It's a body swap drama.)

Forgot. Also tried Age Harassment, just to see if Takei Emi has improved at all. The answer is no. She has about three expressions in the drama. And in the final scene of every episode she clenches her fist – OH SO DRAMATIC – before she starts ranting about harassment in the office. I concluded after two episodes that its a lacklustre drama, with very black and white characters and totally paint-by-the-numbers.

Pity. It's not that the premise of the drama is uninteresting or not relevant, but when it's executed in a black-and-white manner as it is in this drama (males are only bad, and all older females all are lacking confidence & are jealous of the oh-so-young/beautiful/very talented girl), I don't think it does anything to help society.

LOL! I had to laugh at the Fist Clench comment. Why is that so common in J-dramas, and to some extent in k-dramas? J-dramas are also really big on showing someone running.. like forever. I love/hate these kind of quirks in Asian dramas.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm not sure why it's common. They strangely using it as a sort motif here – like a signal for "here is the climax of the episode! Emi clenches her fist and she'll now tell you the TRUTH". It's overdone, and sort of emphasises her lack of acting skills (though I'm sure if they had cast a better actress, they would have made her do the same and at least the fist clenching would have sucked just as much. Maybe the rant would be more compelling...).

Required fields are marked *

UGH. I watched one episode of Age Harassment and HATED it. I actually don't mind Takei Emi, although I agree that she definitely has room for improvement. What bothered me about this drama was that it pitted the female characters against each other. I was so frustrated when the co-workers started hating on Takei Emi's character for being young and pretty. I mean, what is she supposed to do, draw some wrinkles on her face and dress like an old lady?!? They should be angry with the higher ups that favour Takei Emi's character, not the girl herself.

I was also really disappointed with Inamori Izumi's character. I went into this drama hoping that her character would somehow band together with Takei Emi's character to fight against the men that were favouring younger females, but instead it pitted the two against each other.

Maybe the show gets better after episode 1 in regards to these aspects, but I couldn't bring myself to watch more.

Required fields are marked *

I just find her very bland. But it's okay, since 99% of her dramas are really boring so they rarely interest me. She doesn't actually pick interesting roles (see Rurouni Kenshin: she might have been the female lead, but of all female characters that one had just about nothing to do).

Yes, the pitting the female characters against each other.... It's overly simplistic, as the more senior women should definitely be able to see that it's the men that are the driving force behind some of things that are happening and should band together (like in Restaurant with Many Problems). I guess they eventually will, but it's presented in such a black and white manner at this point, that it's just not interesting. There should be nuances from the beginning, in a well written drama.

The other thing is, I just can't buy the "she is so amazingly beautiful, more so than anyone else". If they want to pull that line, they need to cast a) an amazingly, uniquely beautiful person (Takei is cookie-cutter pretty, she doesn't stand out in a line of equally pretty actresses or idols) and b) actresses that are significantly older (one of her colleagues is only 4 years older IRL which is not going to give her wrinkles or grey hair) and not actually beautiful.

The thing is, because I really like Joo-won's character, I really feel the chemistry between him and all the female leads.

I especially enjoy the dynamic that has formed between the mains and think there was already a lot of romantic tension building between them. That's why I'm really bummed with how things went. I would have loved to see them slowly strengthening their relationship as they worked together and for the romantic tension to grow bit by bit.

This show already hasn't been quite as amazing to me as a lot of other's are finding it, but this was one aspect that I was actually excited to see play out and they just had it happen so fast...

Yongpal is confusing me. I'm really sad Cynthia is gone. I don't get the love line between JW and KTH. I feel like things where way more natural with the other female characters. And this give some sort of a 2 narrative time thing for the show, the main story is rather slow, somehow rather blurry for me, while the love story is super fast. I'm confused I don't know if I like the show or not, let's hope that the next episode help me make up my mind on that.

Especially since she says something like, "give me time" and he agrees to--then he kisses her?
Also, it's like what I loved about the show in the first episodes, (he and she ask/tell each other everything ie.) every question I, as a viewer have, unlike so many other shows, where if the leads would just communicate most problems would be resolved. Now she's noticing him with her brother's wife, but not asking him? And what's the bit where he drops her off in a church, but waits illegally parked? Silly!

So this week I finished My Beautiful Bride, a.k.a My Beautiful Banker, a.k.a The Time They Always Met but Never Reunited. It reminds me so much of the writer's previous work, Heartless City, with a better touch of romance, AND Kim Moo-Yeol.
It started off great until around ep 5 but then they have no twists & mysteries and it's all about fighting the 'Shadow' and bringing the 'bride' home. The conflicts became redundant although I always forgot to file a complaint once Kim Moo-Yeol graced the screen. And the ending felt anticlimatic. Like, the cops suddenly became too competent and catched whoever Do-Hyung threw to them. The directing is great (I would die to see the kind of ending in ep 4 to be applied in public channel's drama), and I enjoyed the action scenes just because.
The OSTs are the best I've heard for a while, from the theme songs to the instrumental.
Kim Moo-Yeol was great. Although the chance for him to be the lead in public dramas (though he has a better acting chops than those flower boys), I want to see him more. And I just find out he was indeed the Melchior in Korea's Spring Awakening while Joo Won was his understudy (Kim Moo-Yeol left the production in the middle and Joo Won ended up doing 150 performances). Would be glad to see them reunite.

Yeah, I'm hooked with MBB (I love your other alternate titles as well! :D) until around episode 6 as well, but then it's sorta fizzled out for me. I don't think how the Shadow actually works was ever explained, and so the way they wrapped up the conflict with the Shadow is still confusing for me. The ending was a bit disappointing for me also, because I was hoping they will address some things I've been wondering about (like what kind of relationship his mom has with the Shadow, etc.)

KMM was a pleasure to watch though! :)

I read his interview after the show. It was funny he said that he was so afraid of action (kind of) scenes with Yi SiYoung because she was so strong (He joked he should've done his work-out harder).

fan,

That man is cut in all the right places so I would hope that it is not for just looks and he has the strength and stamina that goes along with a good physique...many times it is all for looks...shorten and cut muscles but that's all.

His comment is funny though! LOL

Yep, the show was amazing in some parts; directing, action sequences, and Kim Moo-Yeol, but the plot itself is pretty weak after episode 6. Many plot holes as well. Still better than current public dramas though. Now I really want to see Kim Moo-Yeol again!

Hi Daehoney,

MBB aka all the above and UDT Marine Chops. Kim Moo-Yeol is so great, a truly handsome, talented actor whose silence is better acting than most speaking parts these days. It was a story I looked forward to following each week (even though there were more alabi names for each character than anyone would want to keep track of). Anyhoot, I am feeling the void now that it's over. Btw, I recapped MBB, so stop by http://www.cimiart.wordpress.com and leave your two cents worth in comments. Here's to the next Cruel City/MBB kdrama, don't make us wait too long, kdramaland!

I'm watching the final episode right now. All I can say is..."wow". OCN did it again!(crossing fingers for the ending, though...)
You're right about the way plot unveils all the mysteries and those "well-hidden" secrets of "Shadows"a bit too early; that's why I'm under the impression the writers might have Season 2 in mind. So, somewhere in ep.10 the story moves on from endless chasing and merciless beating to financial conspiracy and to "who's behind who".
With a second season (or a few more episodes perhaps) and while his "Beautiful Bride" is considered to be dead by almost everyone, this series could have been epic. It would be presumptuous of me but I find MBB a better show than YP for the time being!

MBB has flaws, but I was impressed by Kim Moo-Yeol, the directing, action scenes, and OSTs.

Kim Moo-Yeol (aka Kim Mu-Yeol) is a newlywed. He married Yoon Seung-Ah in April of this year.

Hi Again Everyone and Happy OT! ?
I was browsing through the shows I've watched in the last year or so and was astounded by the number that were disappointing (to say the least).

I thought it'd be fun to list some of the shows that I'd NEVER recommend (or *wicked laughter* only recommend to someone I don't like very much). ? Here are the ones I watched enough of, to know I disliked, with my very subjective ratings (and personal grumblings) based on 'How much I hated/was disappointed by the show' rated out of -10 to -1 (ie -1 = not too bad, -10 = most disliked or worst). What about you?

- Valid Love (-3) Looked nice but...

- A Love to Kill (-4) The ending did not make sense.

- I Miss You (-5) Had potential but it added unnecessary complications that did nothing ? except frustrate.

- Blade Man (-6) - Did I even invest 4 hours in this show? ?

- Heirs (-6) Should have concentrated on the bromance and more than one of those, like the one with the step brother. Could have been a warm family drama.

- Marry Him If You Dare/Mirae's Choice (-7) She didn't dare, she chose herself, but why? ?

- 7th Level Civil Servant (-7) - Was there a story?

- She's So Lovable/My Lovely Girl (-7) It would have been a sweet romance if she had ended up with L, they actually looked ? compatible. Rain did his best.

- My Secret Hotel (-7) So secret that one little question and answer which could have given us delicious OTP good times was almost never asked. The murder that wasn't and the romance that almost didn't. ?

- Super Daddy Yeol (-8) Could have been 8 episodes.

- When a Man Loves (-8) Just because a man loves, does not mean the object of his affections should appear to reciprocate. ?

- Hotel King (-8) What happened to the ? 'My Girl' chemistry?

- Mr Baek (-8) Were the whys ever explained? ?

- Blood (-8) Villain had only 2 expressions, good guys had less? Friend Hyun Woo should have survived and robot deserves a star for being cute.

- Love Rain (-9) Hard to take endless, soulful pining ? through years for the one, neverending love, especially if done kind of soppily.

- Temptation (-9) Frustration ?

- Doctor Stranger (-10) People who are already injured and fall into the sea should really stay dead. ?

:)

I SECOND 'I MISS YOU' SO GREATLY. THE VILLAIN'S ARC MADE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE, AND I GENUINELY PITIED POOR YOON SEUNGHO WHO STILL CARRIED IT FORTH CONVINCINGLY AND MADE ME CONTINUE TO REMAIN IN LOVE WITH HIS CHARACTER.

I rewatched the last episode for kicks and it continues to make no sense to me whatsoever.

On the other hand, I feel the same for Blade Man- I only watched a handful of episodes, skipping around, for the fun superpower premise that was never explained and the fluff.

THUMBS UP for Yoon Seung Ho.
Seriously, even he is a delicious villain, how could you choose a coward lover that let you get raped rather than someone who take care of you and your mess for 10 years? I know they OTP, but at least give us the solved puzzle, the hard-driven reason why YEH choose YC. Seems she just forgot YC's misdeed, and how 'thick face' Yoo Chun is to just show up in her life and claim she is his first love. What the?!

Is so damn bullcrap. Feel killing myself everytime I remember the storyline.

What I hated about the show was that they justified Yoo Eunhye choosing Yoochun by casually turning Yoon Seungho into a serial killer out of nowhere. The ending was Yoon Seungho's Jun sustaining brain damage that would impair him for the rest of his life while the OTP got together, and I just...that's not ok???? The plot got really lazy and makjang as it progressed- a lot of talent wasted.

I love your list!
This is my list, in no particular order:
Boys Before Flowers (-10): it was re-aired recently in my country. It's still bad.
The drama that shall not be named (-8): hint; it starred Hyun Bin.
Doctor Stranger (-9): +1 for the directing. Other than that, I'd recommend it ONLY for LJS's devoted fans.
My Lovely Girl (-8): (didn't finish this) so... tell me which side of her is lovely?
Hotel King (-8): did I just waste 30 hours of my life watching this makjang? Nooo!
Cold and Boring (-5): (didn't finish this) the title said it
Heirs (-7): The biggest waste, literally.
Smelly Girl (-5): was there even a cop?
Nine (-1): I know, I KNOW many people will disagree and gang up on me. There's nothing wrong with the plot. It's great, really. But all the unlikable female characters ruined the fun to the point where I thought the writer's a bit misogynist.
Couldn't think of more.

Could you please elaborate, especially the cause and effect? I didn't really think hard on the plot since the female lead was really getting on my nerves.

One glaring example:
One character decides to scratch some message into a guitar. For some reason, his scratching doesn't appear on the guitar until 20 years later, for the sole reason that on the show there is a flashback to that scene.

For some reason the writer believes that when 18-year-old Sun-woo goes to the toilet, his bladder will not empty until 20 years later, because at that time Sun-woo will have the tools to time travel back in time. Makes sense when you think about it long enough ...

There are many other instances where effects are caused by events that never happened in the specific time-line, while other effects never happened despite there were causes to force them.

I didn’t really think hard on the plot since the female lead was really getting on my nerves.

I actually liked the somewhat satirical treatment:

A plucky good-hearted girl has a crush on a self-centered, cynical narcissist way out of her league. For years, he breaks her heart with his behaviour, even though he is unconciously falling in love with her. Now, that's an original romance plot that we've never seen before.
Except in every other drama, that is. It would be kind of stupid to tell that story all over again, so the show just skips it and goes straight to the part where he finally admits his feelings. And then he changes the timeline and nothing of these things actually ever happened.

0

@Jon. I thought the guitar message was because everything now is shaped from exactly this time 20 years ago, which doesn't make sense, of course, but which dramas do anyway? And I notice the inconsistencies too, although I forget what it was mostly. But this site seems to love it to bits so I put the warning above.
No, it's not the treatment that annoyed me, nor her happy-go-lucky character. It's the fact that she never helped Sun-Woo. Never, unless I have bad memory. She only cries and cries instead of doing something. Or trying to do something. Your uncle is actually the one you love? Okay, just cry in the rain and be sick instead of asking "What can I do?". And also, there are 3 female characters in the drama (female lead, her mother, and the friend's wife), and neither of them is likeable, so that's why I think the writer is misogynist.

0

And I notice the inconsistencies too, although I forget what it was mostly. But this site seems to love it to bits so I put the warning above.

In a converging time-line, this might be happening if someone from the present travelled back to the past 20 years ago and scratched it into the guitar (or caused somebody to do it for him). Two problems:
(a) the story is not set in a converging time-lines universe
(b) nobody travelled back in time, just a character decided to do something on his own without any influence from the "future". That means the scratching already happened 20 years ago in the same time-line and there is absolutely no reason whatsoever (other than 20-year-scratch-proof varnish from a shape-memory alloy) for the delay.

Oh, I just found my "synopsis" for the show:

A doctor sits in his office. Another man enters: "Dear brother, your daughter cannot marry her fiancee. Because she is already married ... to me. But that's not why I'm here. I have to give you these two joss sticks. They always belonged to you but you lost them when you died in the Himalaya one year ago."

"What? Wait ... suddenly everything makes sense!"

When a writer comes up with this scene and means it, you know that somewhere on this planet, a lonely writing teacher weeps bitter tears of blood.

0

Jon G., your synopsis is the funniest thing I've ever read on the OT. Thanks for the laugh-out-loud moment!

Urgh I hated that girl on Nine. She would never shut up and she had no concept of privacy. She was always inviting herself into his home and asking incredibly personal questions...I think there was this one episode where she called a locksmith and broke into his room (after effectively breaking into his house) when he didn't answer her calls through the door. Plus their relationship was totally gross--he basically sat there and gloated about how much stupider she was than him every time she opened her mouth, and she acted like a five-year-old.

Really the biggest problem for me though is consistent with some of that team's other works--they treat every other side character like inhuman window dressing, and rearrange them at will in ~clever timeline shifts. Like, suddenly the girl is engaged with that doctor guy and he's totally in love with her. Oh noes, OTP angst! But whoops, she remembers she's OTP with the main character, cue the dramatic music and romantic declarations, and the drama throws Doctor Guy under the bus as an afterthought.

I dont get why BOF is so disliked by some fellows here on DB. Maybe it was my first kdrama so im a little partial. Also that I saw it years back when I watched drama only for entertainment and hardly ever analyzed them. The acting and plot are equally bad. I recently remember watching the scene where KHJ playing the violin and I cringed so hard I can't even.... It's maybe good and dreamy in the eye of a middle-schooler because I was at that age when it first aired. But try watching it again. I can't stand it.

OOOOHHHH! The violin scene was amazingly...terrible. KHJ had the worst posture ever and the director didn't take seconds of his time to fix (even slightly) his fingers. But when I was ranting on about it to my sister I started laughing really hard and that was it. It's a miracle!!! You see, laughter is theraputical to our minds ( a.k.a endorphin boost) and BoF was so hilarious once I shut down "all engines". Lots of kdramas are quite suitable for a fun ride without too much analysis nor pondering ( like an alternative prescription from a therapist to anxiety patients , LOL)...:-)

0

Haha I am pretty sure I'll find many plot holes and distorted direction if I watch it again and @ kalel Yong pal fight scene did that to me , I mean i literally started laughing in a scene which was supposed to be very serious.

My first K-d was When a Man Loves.

I was searching for something to watch on Netflix and thought the lead actor was cute, so I watched it. I was hooked with the 1st ep. I was blinded by pretty faces and Song's sexy six packs. I became obsessed with it and want it more.

I came across Faith thinking it was Dr. Jin and instead discover Lee Min-ho. I binged watched Faith. I could not believe how gorgeous Lee Min-ho was and how pretty Kim Hee-sun was too.

Faith led me to Dramabeans and I have never looked back. I wouldn't watch When A Man Loves again, but I do have a sweet spot it since it was my 1st venture into dramaland.

If I can add one of the biggest dramafail this year (so far) is High Society. It deserves -11 or more. I'll never recommend it to anyone although the trailers might appear somewhere and seems promising to a new kdrama viewer.

Oh btw, your list makes me want to create a drama-that-you-like/love-unconditionally-and-you're-the-very-small-minor , because I'd say I like Goong S / Prince Hours more than Princess Hours...that was the very first drama which made me hooked. and has a special place in my heart I even re-watched it many times although the female lead's acting is just meh. but Maybe I just didn't watch many dramas back then, so my preference is a little bit odd lol (because if I compare it to recent good dramas, it'll lose for sure)

Haha good list! I'll play.

Return of Iljimae: -3. Jung Il-woo is about as effective as a block of wood, the story seems to go nowhere and has nothing to say about the time period beyond pat morality tales, the romance is infuriatingly juvenile, the narration is even more so, and the directing is suffocating and static, a series of postcard visuals that never engage the viewer on any level.

King of Dramas: -4. Congratulations, you went from a larger-than-life comedy/thriller about drama production, to a feeble, OTP-driven, trope-ridden joke mindlessly embracing the very practices that make dramaland such a dangerous work environment.

Dr. Jin: -5. Lulzy when it's not mind-numbing. On the plus side we have people shitting their pants on a regular basis, donuts becoming the weapons of an assassin, batshit music direction and Song Seung-heon overacting his pants off, plus the whole baby thing...but then there's the fact that Dr. Jin can't be in surgery every episode because he has to get involved in the most annoying love triangle of all time and let the stupidest bunch of courtiers ever come up with the stupidest political plots ever.

Cinderella's Sister: -5. Even Moon Geun-young is not worth the pain of sitting through such a regressive, lowest-common-denominator ass-backwards melo.

A Man Called God: -6. A drama so bad it's not even funny anymore, half the time. The other half it's pee-in-your-pants hilarious--Song Il-gook's haircut never gets old, the production looks like a shitty Power Rangers knock-off, and the first episode has got to be the best worst episode of Kdrama ever. Makes Dr. Jin look respectable in comparison.

Heirs: -10. Will make your eyes and ears bleed. Might even make your brain mold.

Goong: -10. Every character in this drama is dumb as a bag of rocks, and none of the cast can act. I still feel rageful when I see Yoon Eun-hye, and it's been years. Also, my feelings about modern royalty are a lot closer to Morrissey's than whatever airheaded Diana fangirl wrote this crap pile...suffice to say if I have to see people fighting over a throne, it better be a bunch of court ladies and old bearded guys in a kill-or-be-killed proxy war to hold a nation in their sway, instead of a bunch of whiny, mopey kids bickering over who wants to tour teddy bear museums with what has to be the stupidest shoujo heroine alive.

Here's my list of horrible drama I've watched haha :

HEIRS - hate me, but all PSH and LMH's scene came out I want to punch the screen so bad. (-7)
BOF - hate me again, but it could end in 10 eps that's for sure. I love LMH for record. (-8)
DR. JIN - I was unemployed and end up watching..brain documentary for 20hours. No story. (-10)
WHEN A MAN LOVES -..just say YES/NO. 1minute quiz. Why making a drama?!! (-10)
DREAM HIGH 2 - until the ending, I don't even know what're they dreaming of.. (-7)
SECRET GARDEN - okay I like the first 5th eps, after that pretty much Sucks Garden. (-7)
HEARTSTRINGS - I do remember YongHwa plays guitar, and then? Bad sign. (-8)
MASK - A lot ppl will disagree, but I shake myself and say wake up. (-7)
The bad guy keeps saying I will take Min Hoo down for 19eps without actions, and at 20th
ep only to be taken out in a minute. I don't even know the purpose of making this drama.

And my biggest dissapoinment until today :
I MISS YOU (-6) : why why why? Show, u have YEH,PYC, and Yoon Seung Ho! You have biggest talented child actor set the stage very well and epic! Your melo ironic trope is set! But why u failed?

I received an e-mail last night from the human race admitting that we've done the worst possible job of running the world for the last 10,000 years. As such the leaders have decided to give something else a try specifically a cat, even more specifically my cat. My cat has made his first two decrees.

First everything orange is mine, er his.

Second all the lasagna, watermelon, and cheesecake in the world also belongs to me, er him.

After that my cat used his claws to cut through time and space and we prevented the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln, both Kennedy's, Martin Luther King, and John Lennon.

Hmm, history doesn't appear to have changed so there's a slight chance all that was a dream. Just to be on the safe side you should still send me everything you have that's orange as well as all your lasagna, watermelon, and cheesecake.

..........................................................................................

Mrs. Cop- Even though I still really like it I hope it finds it's pace next week.

Young-pal- I'm going to miss Cynthia as a character and getting to look at Stephanie Lee. Is anyone else put off by how fast Tae-hyun and Yeo-jin's relationship is growing with no on-screen explanation? I was fine with them as friends why can't they stay friends for a while?

Currently Watching - I astound myself ... just 2 shows...
Yong Pal - Had a good start, some slow build up, some action but has begun to stall. Is this another consolidation period before all the action comes up again? I would prefer a show to have a balance of being character and plot driven. If one slows down, the other might, I don't know... hold the fort? Or maybe not. There was a lot of plot, not much in the way of character growth, but now the plot is flagging. Do our protagonist have a plan? Do the baddies? No?

Midnight Diner - I will take it slow with this since it's episodic and short and I can just sit and watch without thinking too hard. I still feel it's a little like a stage performance with just the few backdrops but the people carrying the whole episode comfortably. I like the ending of each episode with everyone leaving and not taking a bow, but still showing up as if an encore was called.

Hoping to start '20 Again' and that it will not suck. :)

Oh I forgot, I have started Cheo Yong Season 1 because I notice that Season 2 is out and I might as well catch 1 before 2. I know someone on OT recommended that I watch it so Thanks for the recommendation!!!

The show is not too bad and it's great that it's just 10 episodes. I like the dynamic of the 3 leads, the crime of the episode and discovering over the episodes, what ghost Na Young has forgotten about her own life and death. It does not look like her death will get solved or that they will tackle why she has still not passed over. However the show is typical OCN with more robust police efforts (ok, at least they are not dumb) at crime solving although it's Cheo Yong who does the most. It's amusing to see that the ghost is more lively and ebullient than those who are alive and good that that all 3 leads have got more character and backstory to them that ties them together. At least it's hinted at and I would like it to be more revealed as we go along.

They do solve Na-young's death and the events that tie all three together, what they don't explain is why she's still here after the first season.

Lets see event thought i have commented earlier in the drama reviews this is the first time commenting in an open thread,,, Happy OT beaniiess
because of my holiday i watched all the dramas like marathons and im quite shoked i actually finiesed one new drama and re watched three of my all time favaourite dramas

This week's new drama i watched is My Love Eundong -- Eventhough i liked the drama dearly, i loved the first episode of all the drama, the introduction of the characters when they were students,
and how they lost thouch with each other and every thing, it took me an whole day to finish the drama, and when i saw the second and the third meeting of them i felt a chillll because is that kind of a destiny really exist???
if so then there is no words describing it its just WOOOOOOOWWWWWW

Then my all time favourite drama's No. one is ALWAYS You are beautiful -- The drama which made me addicted to Korean dramas. no matter how many times i watch it i always loves it and specially TaeKyong's lips when he is mad with MiNam,
how ShinWoo took care of MiNam but always a step behind TaeKyong. Jeramy oh Jeramy the eye candy and the one who keeps the humor all the time, the funniest parts are when before their first concert with MiNam,
ShinWoo Splashes water in Jeramy and he hugs Jolie and Sobbing, HongGI did a great work doing the Jeramy's character, and i loved the whole scene while they were in the supermarket. And oh god the ENDINGGGG.....
No matter what the whole drama its the best of the best.... no matter how old the drama will becomee i love that drama

Second Favourite is Heartstrings its the collabaration of Minam and ShinWoo's and the music of the drama is the best second to Nodame Cantabile in my openion, not like Nodame this has the Fusion of the Classic and Modern Music
i loved all the songs and musics of the drama, specialy the one which was played in the eighth episode which were played by the both group, and that search for the music is which introduced me to the Dramabeans and im always glad for that

And the last one is Vampire Prosecutor -- God i miss the third season of this drama, im not a big fan for Vampire dramas but man this drama got me totally hooked up and watched the whole two seasons of the drama and the last episode's cliff hanger!!!!
God i hate OCN for that because they never finish a drama completly like Team 10, Missing Noir M and others, i like their thriller dramas but there are mostly ten episodes in one season and it takes more than an year for them to get the next season,,,

In Japanese drama i watched again my all time favourite in Japanese drama The Buzzer beat -- Still loving that drama even after i watched it so many times again and again,,,,

Finally beanies i have a question does any one know where i can find other fusion versions of Carmen in Heartstring's eighth episode??? because i love the fusion versions of that music, and i...

Me too like Heartstring, something about the ambience of calmness in that drama makes me appreciate it more. I love the scene where Yonghwa knelt down and ask Shinhye to not stop loving him (if I'm not mistaken it's the scene where Shinhye was injured and on wheelchair, right?)

Yeah, I'm still waiting for 3rd season of Vampire Prosecuter, it's so slick and fast-paced, this drama is one of the drama that I will always compare to other action kdramas.

So, I'm kind of watching Mrs. Cop and All About My Mom. (and by kind of I mean I'm translating my part from them and not watching the rest).

I'm reading the recaps on Mrs. Cop and as much as I like Do Young, I wish it focused more on Young Jin and J- uhh I forgot his name (Jong Ho maybe? They showed him so little I can't even remember his name). They are the mains, right?

I watched the first 2 episodes of All About My Mom with a lot of ffs because I only care about Eugene and Sangwoo and their romance seems to be pretty cute. But her parents seem like the typical extremely annoying kdrama parents ugh. I wonder how much worse is his mom going to be?? I do somehow feel like I'm missing on a lot if I don't watch the parts with the parents and the brothers so I might go back to watch it all if I end up liking it ;;. And this is why I find watching a kdrama that doesn't have recaps hard.

I really don't have anything interesting to watch these days T^T. Can anyone recommend an airing (or recently finished) kdrama or twdrama?

I am watching All About My Mom, just because there is so little on this season I need a filler. Not bad, but also kind of heavy on many of the usual k-drama cliches.

But seriously, k-drama land needs some fresh writers that can make a drama that does NOT have all the horribly annoying mothers and MIL's. And deadbeat dads. And totally useless siblings. Grapevine was the last show I watched that fit that bill. Maybe the only one since Dalja's Spring.

Well all I have to talk about it is Oh My Ghostess!! I'm enjoying the drama drama so much that I've put all my other dramas on hold.
I love almost everything about the drama: the development, the characters, the funny lines, the writing. The casting is one of the main reason I'm having so much fun right now. They can act, it's convincing, credible and that alchemy between Park Bo-young & Jo Jung suk! O_O PBY really need to be cast asap in a new (comedy) drama, she's incredible. And I can't go without notice how much I like Kim Seul-gi!
That said do you have any recommendations for a drama once I'll be done with Oh my ghostess??
Have all a happy Friday :)

Yong-pal: I would prefer if Taehyun and Yeojin had stayed as bickering friends for a while. The kiss was swoonworthy, yes, but also unexpected. And...this is one of the kisses that I'd like the girl to back off immediately, because didn't she say she needed time to heal? I never thought that Taehyun liked Yeojin either. But story-wise, if Yongpal is really only 16 episodes, this is around the time for a kiss, I think?

Not about kdramas, but about jdoramas. I watched a couple (Date and Mondai no aru Restaurant, which was excellent!) based on recs from a previous open thread. Now I'm looking for one called Toho Nanahun. The plot synopsis is this:

32-year-old Kurosaki Yoriko (Tanaka Rena) has no man, no friends and no job. She starts to live alone for the first time and comes in touch with a new world. This is the story of the small incidents that occur within a 7-minute walking distance from her apartment.

Which sounds like it's just up my slice-of-life street. Anyone seen this or know where I could find it with English subs?

Hi Beanies!

I have a question... do you guys have a list of your very own actresses and actors that you keep your eyes on and what's the reason for it.

Because i would love to start checking out on some of their works. I want to alternate Mondai no Aru Restaurant with some other thing.

Oh guys another question.

I've noticed quite a blatant of double standard going on Kdrama sphere regarding actress vs actor. I would love to read a proper discussion on that. Cause i noticed a handful of bad acting by girls are even more blatantly criticize than man same goes with their acting skills that went more unappreciated.

PS: I can't wait for Jang Hyuk to embrace my screen again. LOL

I don't really follow actors & actresses, in the sense of watching every his/her projects and stuff, but I do have some actresses & actors I love to see, usually movie actors since it doesn't hurt to check their project thoroughly (not like dramas where you have to invest 20 hours on it).
Song Kang-Ho: Who doesn't wait his upcoming projects? I'm ready for Sado!
Kang Dong-Won: keeping up with him just recently. Though not all of his movies are my cup of tea, I enjoyed his performance. I also like the fact that a name as big as him still wants to play baddie/antagonist to an older actor. I mean, I'm sure he's offered thousands of scripts with him as main lead but he doesn't mind being co-leads as long as it interests him. Looking forward to his projects!
Lee Jungjae: I've only watched 4 of his movies. I didn't particularly like him, but boy, The Face Reader changed it.
Now Ha Jungwoo's movies are on my list and I'll finish them if I have the time.
Other than them I just watch movies randomly based on reviews and ratings, and if I was lucky I'd find Kim Yoon-Seok and Yoo Hae-Jin in their films, which is a blast!
In dramaland I don't follow many actors, especially if the script is bad. But I do look forward to Gong Hyo Jin and Joo Won (that can't even make me watch Cantabile) mainly.

For the double standard, I see that too. Like, seriously, many actors don't have the acting chops to be a lead (*cough* SJ, SKJ, KYK *cough* not because they're models but they just come to mind *cough*) but netizens will focus on the female (Lee Yeonhee, UEE/Im Ji Yeon, etc). If the actresses can't act they'd be criticized like they're a criminal for being plastic so they can't emote or anything.

I know Song Kang Ho, but never really actually seen one of his project. Okay, kill me now. lol

I love KDW, so it's quite obvious that i watched most of his projects.

Is Face Reader any good?

Watched HJW's one too. :D Totally feel you on GHJ, i find Joo Won as a good actor but i don't find him absolutely astounding or anything. I do think he can become a great one.

I always... i mean always tend to absolutely marvel on the way veteran actors, act. I usually fall for an actress or actors in their late 20s-30s-40s.

I can understand the UEE and Im Ji Yeon criticism but i can't find the same level of annoyance from a terrible acting from an actor. Which i found sad... and from what i've seen in Miss Korea. LYH has done a phenomenal job to make me like her rather than being meh skipping this show whenever i saw her name.

I haven't watched many of SKH's works too, but he's one of the best actors in Korean film industry. If you love KDW you must have seen Secret Reunion, he's in it with SKH. Or you can start his project from Face Reader. It's the most entertaining sageuk I've ever watched, and I'm not much into sageuk actually. And it has many familiar names like Jo Jongsuk, Lee Jongsuk, and Lee Jungjae.
Funnily enough, KDW has done many sageuks but I only enjoyed JeonWoochi (although Choi Dong Hoon's films are not my cup of tea). Instead, I like him most in roles like My Brilliant Life or Secret Reunion, where he has the most normal hairstyles LOL. It's because he has done so much sageuks so modern films are much appreciated.
Been wanting to dig HJW's works since forever but time never permit. Have only seen him in Take off and Kundo. I want to watch The Chaser.
GHJ is queen. I want to drag Joo Won to movies and make them act alongside veteran actors instead of draining his energy on dramas.
Me too! For me, I prefer actors/actresses above 30s. They have different vibes than those in 20s.
From what I see, most of the netizens who bash actress are women. It's sad and scary. I understand criticism but they tend to forget to give praise when needed.

For the double standard, I see that too. Like, seriously, many actors don’t have the acting chops to be a lead (*cough* SJ, SKJ, KYK *cough* not because they’re models but they just come to mind *cough*) but netizens will focus on the female (Lee Yeonhee, UEE/Im Ji Yeon, etc). If the actresses can’t act they’d be criticized like they’re a criminal for being plastic so they can’t emote or anything.

Well, that's the audience gender bias, of course. Who cares about all the mediocre acting as long as the guy is hot?
The women, on the other hand, have no chance at all, no matter what their acting abilities are like: If they are pretty, people hate them for being pretty. If they are not (particularly extraordinarily) pretty, they are "not suited for the role" and "they are not even pretty".

I "love" the "plastic" argument: "She cannot emote, her face never moves. She's so plastic. She should have cut down on plastic surgery."

It's not like having no plastic surgery makes you a great actor, or having plastic surgery takes away all your chops.

I mean, Kim Ah-joong has a completely artificial face and that not only not stopped her from emoting just fine, her career was put on track by the very fact that she looks extremely plastic. (Well, that and her voice, probably.)

0

Required fields are marked *

+1 on Kim Ah-joong. Seo Woo is another example of a great actress who also happens to look very plastic.

What I love the most is that it's this kind of hyper-critical environment that creates the need for plastic surgery in the first place. If you have to be beautiful to succeed at something that should have nothing to do with looks, anyway, why is "natural" beauty any better than "unnatural?" Acting talent is what should matter.

I was once reading comments about PMY and PSH, the debate on who was better actress?? (that time Healer and Pinochhio both were running)

I was soo amazed to see 90% of PSH fans have the same argument that PSH was better because she was "Natural Beauty!!!!!" and PMY was not. They hardly say anything about their acting, I cant recall a singlr comment where PSH fans say that her acting was better than PMY. Cummon if you are a fan you should say that

I too was not very comfortable with the PS thing but now I know it is a very common in Korea, I am not bothered anymore. PS cant help you in acting , that is your skill

Sorry not sorry, I'd pick PMY over PSH. PS is different from procedures like botox where it paralyzes your muscles and keeps you from emoting.

0

@Daehoney

It is not about who you pick, even I like PMY more , My point is that people may have different preferences but when you are asked who is better ACTRESS , you should tell I like her ACTING, you cant defend her by saying "She is better, because she is a NATURAL BEAUTY"

0

@Daehoney

In dramaland I don’t follow many actors, especially if the script is bad. But I do look forward to Gong Hyo Jin and Joo Won (that can’t even make me watch Cantabile) mainly.

That is a strange combination, btw. To me, GHJ and JW are almost opposite types of actors.

GHJ (in K-drama) plays minor variations of the same character again and again and again, and she does it with a very small set of acting tools. She's fantastic at it, but she never picks anything outside that very narrow range.

JW has a great range, is very variable, but lacks subtlety and intuition.

I know people rave about Gong Hyo Jin, but I've never been able to get into her work. I realised recently that it's because (unpopular opinion ahead!) I don't like her acting style. It's not that it's bad, at all, and I can't pinpoint what I dislike about it. I think one of the reasons I gave up on Master's Sun was because I was growing tired of her acting. And every other thing I've tried since that she's been in, I find myself thinking Oh, it's GHJ doing her thing again (because, as you say, she seems to stay in a pretty narrow range, acting-wise). I can't explain/define what "her thing" is, but for me it palls very quickly.

I just realised recently too but she's pretty much excelling at it so i've got no complains.

And she's one of the actresses that i've got no problem in believing her character. She's natural in playing them so i've got no issues.

0

I wonder then, which actress that you followed in drama land?

Because the obvious answer that most will pick which i can already predict is GHJ

0

I don't really follow actors or actresses that much, but there are a few women whose names on a project will pique my interest.

Kim Seul Gi is one.

Kim Mi Kyung, too. Her roles are usually secondary, not leads, but I like what she does with them.

Jung Ryeo Won--I've enjoyed her performances in everything I've seen her in, and I like how she brings a different energy to each of them. I disliked her character in Kim Sam Soon, but then when I saw her in King of Dramas, I realised that was because she acted that role so well. And then in History of the Salaryman, she was so hilarious. I really like her.

And I have a soft spot for Choi Yeo Jin as well, ever since Emergency Couple.

0

I agree with you. The reason why I (and maybe others) like GHJ is because she always adds a touch to make her character relatable and believable. IOIL is where I like her the least, but it's not enough to make me hate her or her character because I can relate to her to some degree. I also appreciate her for not going the 'lovely' route. Her next project is a thriller so I'm waiting to see the other side of her acting.
JW, on the other hand, is one of the better actor in 20s range but I hope he stops wasting his energy and talent in dramas and come to movieland with senior actors like Yoo Ah-In.

Well, don't get me wrong, I love Gong Hyo-jin. She's one of my favourite Korean (drama) actresses. I didn't really mean to criticise her negatively with the comment above, it's just my impression of her work in K-drama.

I was mostly baffled by the fact that someone would single out two actors at opposite ends of the spectrum.

I love GHJ because she is one of the very few actors whose acting I don't need to interpret. I can simply rely on my hard-wired system of feeling emotions of another person.

Joo Won is basically the opposite. You always see the gears turning and the strings attached when he is acting. I first see what he is trying to do as an actor, and then it's my job to figure out what that means for his character.

0

talked about it a little on my blog, but in estonian. basically, how some characters only purpose is to show up when the male lead needs praise, or how the female lead is hardly ever a lead, but a mirror or mime of the lead actors´emotions.
and it is not that the skills arent acknowledged, often when they notice she can actually act, they play down her independence and individuality

I like Joo Won (though Yong Pal confuses me) and Gong Hyo Jin (Master's Sun is a great drama and even though I couldn't finish some of her projects, like IOTL and Producers, I just love her style, an inspiration for sure!). I also like Masahiro Higashide (who is in Mondai). With him, other than this I watched xxxHolic and Ao Haru Hide.

About double standards, this happens a lot. I seriously admire some people who are brave enough to show their opinion on actors they don't like or think are not that talented (by actors I mean male actors). Not all good looking people can act, which also doesn't mean they can't improve.

Ao Haru Ride, i tried to watch a couple of minutes but i absolutely adore the manga (at the beginning) and the anime so i found myself being dissatisfied with live action. It always so short.

On the Korean side, I pretty much always watch Gong Hyo-jin's works. I feel like she knows how to pick well, so I'll give even stuff a try that otherwise I wouldn't go for. It's maybe not even that the quality of her dramas is so great, but I feel like I can nearly always relate to the characters she plays, while with many other Korean actresses I just don't get the roles. On the film side, Bae Doona (always, anything) and Kang Dong-won (nearly always). There's more Korean film actors I quite like and will keep my eye on.

Lots more on J-side: Kamiki Ryunosuke, Mitsushima Hikari, Kase Ryo, Sometani Shota, Masuki Suda (starting now!), Kanata Hongo, Eita, Moriyama Mirai, Ayano Gou, Kengo Kora, Sakura Ando are all very good (or more than that) and nearly always pick interesting projects. (I am probably forgetting someone here. There's just a really solid bunch of J actors that do both films and dramas.)

There's also a whole bunch of drama actors who I like, but whose project choices are more hit and miss – so it depends whether I'm interested in a film/drama, the director and rest of the cast whether I'll give their stuff a try.

Kase is one of the best actors Japan has. He's incredible. But he has done mostly films, and mostly indie films at that (and some very eclectic ones). But I'll watch anything with him, because he's just so good. Arifureta Kiseki (Ordinary Miracle) is one of his dramas, one of my favourites, though I don't think many people are familiar with it. SPEC (several series plus two or three films) is much more mainstream, and a bit of a cult drama. He's also appeared in non-Japanese films by the way, he's apparently he only good thing in Gus van Sant's Restless (haven't seen it yet), starred in Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima, Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love and Hong Sang-soo's Hill of Freedom.

Gou is also more of a film actor, although he's done a good number of dramas as well. But, yes, many in supporting roles (the same applies for films). I think he prefer to pick interesting roles over being lead just for the sake of it. Though he's getting more lead roles recently.

Well, sometimes it depends on who the writer and the director too, but I will always follow these actors/ actresses works (except sageuk):
-Gong Hyo Jin, Jang Nara, Kim Seulgi
-Cha Seung Won, Seo In Guk, Yoon Shi Yoon, Lee Beum Soo, Kim Bum

The reasons vary but perhaps it's related to the way they deliver their lines, it seems natural and belieavable, plus their eyes when they emote emotions.

Me too, am disappointed with the double standard for the bad acting issue. The reason it become a big issue is maybe because in S.Korea, netizens opinion is so powerful. Like, netizens can make the director/ writer/ actor aplogize because of the bad drama. This is just my opinion but SK is still plagued with misogynist issue, but let's face it, everywhere in the world there will always this issue but SK always make the headline nowadays because this country is in the spotlight now (kdramas, kpop etc).

What a taste... we have almost the same list excluding Kim Seul Gi, Yoon Shi Yoon, SIG. For SIG, I only watched him in IRY.

People might killed me for this but i tried Reply 1997, i stopped at episode 1. I don't remember why but i don't think it's captivating enough to keep me watching with my hectic final year.

I keep my eyes on Song Hye-Kyo, simply because she is so so beautiful to look at... But, unfortunately, I don't really like the dramas she picks, or which pick her, so I don't usually end up watching her dramas.

On the flip side, I don't particularly look out for Gong Hyo-Jin, but it seems I end up watching a lot of what she's in.

Then, I'm genuinely intrigued by some actors/actresses because of their single, stand-out performances, but haven't watched anything else they've been in...such as Kim Ji-Hoon and Im Jung-eun, who (to me at least) were so mesmerizing in "Joseon X-Files" that I hated that the show had to end.

I follow Yoo Ah-In, I guess, but not all the time either... So I guess that means I watch dramas for the plot and story, not for who's starring in them...though it's always a plus when those I like star in projects that interest me.

If I can ever be called a fan of anyone in any genre/field/profession, it would have to be Tori Amos and Tony Leung. So different, I know...but their names will always draw me in.

Mango ice cream with dark chocolate and fresh coconut!

Required fields are marked *

I'm trying to imagine how that works... but the melding is not happening. How does that taste like?

I'm imagining dark chocolate coating on a yellow, freezing scoop of mango ice cream with a ripe green sweet thai coconut on the side.

Take a scoop of chocolate-and-mango-ice-cream. Let the bitterness of thin dark chocolate coat melt on your tongue, followed then by the spilling of the creamy, saliva-inducing-sourness then the sweetness of mango and sugar in the ice cream. The chocolate totally melts and your tongue automatically rolls over the semi-solid teaspoon sized bit of ice cream. Bitterness, tangy-sourness and sweet mix, then you push the ice cream to the roof of your mouth, mashing it, as it fills your mouth. Your tongue moves to taste the entirety of the ice-cream and chocolate till it all turns to thick, heavy liquid. Then you swallow and feel the coolness slowly go down your throat. After that, taking a sip of cold coconut water from the refrigerated coconut beside you, the lightness and clean cool of the refreshing, sweet fluid washes away the heaviness of the ice-cream, and you feel that cool flow swiftly down your throat. What remains is just the light sweetness of the after-taste of coconut water.

Is that it?

Hi.

I was absent last week, because I was at a workshop - textile artist unions´embroidering workshop. (and today I am very late, cause I was at a fee concert - of Elina and Stig, you remember, our Eurovision duo? ah, it was great to finally see them live).
anyway the workshop was... well, you see, this flag printing shop had told us we get one A4 print of photo for free, but they actually made 4 of each photo, and who sent two photos got 8 prints! For free! so there was a lot to embroider, with beads and threads. We were at my former professors´house, a farmhouse, the weather was so nice, we sat under an oak tree and worked and I went for early morning walks and took pictures of horses in the fog... and we got fed like little piglets. by dinner, I just couldnt eat. it was almost like those korean drama tables, where you think: "How will they possibly eat all of that?" - and then they run off and leave the food!!! My professor would have thrown us out if we did that.

anyway, I think some might have accidentally already clicked on my username and found a blog under it. In short, I decided to give a try keeping a drama blog of my own, whenever I find time, and mainly in estonian, to introduce our audiences to Korean dramas. But I will also post in English - and maybe sometimes in Finnish, though I might make a few mistakes, or my pathetic Russian, if I am behind a better keyboard. You can see the blog clicking on my username.

so please, take a look. I mainly raved about hello, Monster at first though. *shy* I finished it slowly and I feel like I couldn´t have handled it, if I had marathoned it in short time. I also tried watching some Yong Pal, but I quit. Seriously, if only one could self-censo videos and put some stars or flowers above where they are cutting people and showing their insides and blood, I would so do it. like, a Happy Meal version of the medical gore. But there is no site with such option...

QUESTION TODAY: I had lots of trouble naming my blog of randomness. Still not satisfied, but I can´t think of anything brighter. Heeelp... what would you name a drama blog (if you don´t have one already or if you do, how did you come up with that name?) any suggestions fo me, PLEASE?

Hmmm because everyone has its own unique way in thinking, thus, if you have something 'different' in your blog comparing to others, that what makes it 'out of the box' :D

But I prefer two syllables for any blog name. It's easy to remember, unless you have a very unique name based on what you feel you're obsessed with it. For example, if you like potato so much, you name it as 'thepotation' -- potato nation lol.

Hello Everyone,

To those who recommended The Eccentric Daughter-in-Law (aka My Virtual Bride) with Dasom and Ryu Soo-Young - Thanks for the recommendation. Watching them is loads of fun.

Episode 1 with the girl group and Oh In-Young and her idol group mates reminded me of the video from a few months ago of Lee Tae-Im & Yewon and their sunbae/hoobae controversy. It's a relief when one can instantly recognize the meta from something.

Currently Watching: Yong-Pal, Scholar Who Walks the Night, and The Virtual Bride.

Blast from the Past: Watching Tamra the Island for the 1st time ever. Discovered that there's the 16 episode version that aired in 2009 and then there's the Director's Cut. Did I make the right decision in deciding to watch the Director's Cut instead?

I like when there's a lull in must-see kdramas like right now. It gives me the much needed time and chance to catch up and check off dramas from my never-ending pending queue. I'm tempted to start:
2012's Childless Comfort (it keeps popping up on Viki.com)
2007's Thank You with Jang Hyuk, Gong Hyo-Jin, Shin Sung-Rok, and Choi Kang-Hee. (Watched part of episode 1. I think I have to be in the mood for something heavy. And right now I'm veering toward light and funny instead of emotionally heavy.)
Either So Ji-Sub's 2014 web drama One Sunny Day or his 2004 drama Sorry, I Love You. I've only seen him in Master's Sun and his brief cameo in Warm & Cozy. (I know right, can you believe it!)

My Lovely Girl.. God knows how boring it is!
TTWNIL.. Only brave HJW and LJW fans should watch
Fashion King.. utter failure
Dr.Jin.. waste of time
Dr.Stranger.. even LJS can't save the drama
Blade&Petals.. bad memories, but the show is crap as long as I remember

Hi.

Currently watching Yong Pal and Punch. Didn't watch this week episodes of Yong Pal, saw some spoilers. Still sort of watching Reply 1994, there are 4 episodes left. I'll spend some time without watching anything, but will not officialy drop anything. I'm temporarily (I believe) tired of dramas. Actually, I feel like this for awhile, and I've been insisting on the mission of finding something interesting and since then, I only watched a single j-drama I liked. Definetely will stop looking for new things to watch. Punch is awesome, though, but it should be appreciated slowly, since a lot of things happen in a single episode (watched three).

This time, I will not ask for recommendations, but I can recommend something if someone asks me.

Happy weekend beanies!

So, I'm wondering who is your greatest crush for k-drama character? The one that makes you breathless everytime he/she appears on screen? For me, any chaebol character is a no-no for me as I tend to fall for normal hero and lately I realize that I always like any drama by lovely Gong Hyo Jin and Seo In Guk (minus his sageuk drama, I'm not fan of that genre) and my eyes will sparkle when I see them. XD
Aside from them, I've been loving Kim Bum's character as Ha Min Jae in The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry. I can't wait to see him in another rom-com drama preferably reunited with Park Jin Hee. I think that the eyes when both of them looking at each other perfectly describe the madly-in-love eyes.

I tried with Midnight diner but I felt it didn't have the heart as the original one had.
But in jdoraman;
Omotesando Koukou Gasshoubu! which is super fun and cute about choir singing. Also Shirota Yu, it's been a while.
Also heard that Shibasaki Kou will star in a taiga, playing a female daimyo (warlord)! Awesome!

Also surprise news that Horikita Maki got married with Yamamoto Koji who's 12 years older then her and apparently has had feelings for her for 6 years....he even write her 40 love letters. It sounds like a dorama

Yong Pal / Twilight: Wow, that's interesting. Now that you mention it, I can see the parallels -- not so much in terms of story or characters, but in terms of naive story-telling:

Meyer loves to use superfluous adverbs at every impossible instance. The show has a similar tendency in its use of certain decorative elements like musical scores and pan shots.

Meyer always makes sure to spoil her readers with tons of repetitive and blatant foreshadowing of the very few plot points in her story. The show does the same. The only way to actually be surprised by any of the "plot twists" is if this is the very first story you ever read/watched.

Meyer loves the "tell-don't-show" approach unless it's something completely irrelevant to the story. The show does something similar: We are told about the character's characters or emotions, but we are shown inconsequential scenery porn.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Still, Meyer must've gotten something right... haha! I once heard someone compare J.K. Rowling and Meyer, implying they were in the same league...and, well, I couldn't help but cringe. They've both written fiction targeted at young adults, but surely that's where their similarities end!

For a stay at home mom writing her first novels, I guess Meyer can be excused for poor(er) writing.

Its so boring now! There is not even a single kdrama at par with IRY OMG. Ahh, what am i gonna do? Last week i thought maybe Yong-pal is my new IT show but seriously, there are so many mistakes, it can't be ignored. Their romance was so rushed..viewers know they are meant to be but then where's the fun if they make it so clear? Cynthia left for US, hope she landed safely.
Why did they showed Nurse Oh, smiling at TH-YJ? Last i know, she didn't know about their deal, and definitely that they are in love! It felt weird how she smiled at them, like they are granpa-granma couple, finally together after fighting for their whole life, together in their last time!

Finally this eps give me back the excitement for this grand final, though I still prefer an individual game for the second half of this show. Well, at least I still can watch Sangmin doing his pulling-string-at-the-background move and thwart Kyunghoon's plan. Love DongKong alliance and bromance, it's a pity they didn't do that earlier. And Ahyoung-Dongmin-Dealer nuna dynamic is always fun to watch. Next week is another game that they'll play with a partner. I'll just keep my expectation low since that kind of game is usually quite frustrating.

So it's been a minute since I commented on an open thread but nobody in my k-sphere is commenting on this and it's driving me mad. Any khip-hop fans and/or American hip-hop fans with thoughts on the upcoming Tablo and Joey Bada$$ collaboration? Stylistically this confuses me on every level possible for both men, especially considering how image-conscious the Korean industry is...did they listen to his music? Out of all the Korean rappers he could've worked with, Tablo? It could've been worse, it could've been Illionaire, but idk man, just don't know. Well hey, Dynamic Duo and Dj Premier happened, and no blood was shed, so I'll roll with it, but I wish I had been at that board meeting.

As far as dramaland goes, nothing going actually, except Once Upon a Time in Saengchori from several isolated recommendations which were brought to my attention again in The Village comment thread. Light, and funny, without being unbearably trite. Ha Suk Jin does "jerk with an excuse" better than a lot of the "it boys" that get praise for that sort of role. He strikes a better balance between nice and not so nice in terms of pathos.

I don't pay as much attention to the music world as I used to, and I'm probably more up to date with khiphop that American hiphop (although I'm finding the increasing intersection between the two worlds -- Keith Ape and CL and the like -- really interesting). So I've heard of Joey Bada$$, but am not familiar with his music. I'll have to take a listen. But I think that Tablo and the rest of Epik High, despite being signed to YG, still have that indie artist vibe about them, so the image-consciousness of the Korean music industry doesn't necessarily apply, you know? Plus khiphop, though becoming more mainstream, still seems to have a reputation for being freer and a bit more unruly compared to kpop.

Anyway, whatever Joey Bada$$'s music sounds like I'm glad he's not working with Illionaire. I can't even with those guys. Well Dok2 specifically, I guess. I just can't...

Required fields are marked *

That's true about khiphop having a reputation of being freer, but that also results in a lot of it being gimmicky and THAT's not what he's about. And maybe I'm worried for nothing because I don't know of Epik High having a reputation for being gimmicky (ahem Illionaire). I guess it's because of Tablo's reputation of a personality more so in recent years. I'll have to check deeper into his stuff. I highly recommend Joey. His mixtape 1999 put him on my radar.

I am liking Last a lot as well. It and Assembly are the only two dramas I'm watching with any real enthusiasm right now. I really x10 hope they go into Praying Mantis's back story. We've learned something about most of the major characters' lives and how they ended up as street people. Alcoholism, drug addition, mental illness, not wanting to live under their family's rules, business failure etc etc. But so far nothing about him. He is a young guy so he might have been a throw-away child who ends up being exploited on the streets. He says something like "Your god lives in heaven but my god lives in that penthouse?" Why is he so loyal? He seems to be more than a mere minion. I hope the character gets some fleshing out before the final denouement.

+1, @Lindy12
I wonder why people who claim "more relatable characters" and "slice of life" in kdramas actually avoid that genre completely. Especially Assembly and Last ( plus MBB minus the Banker "Ahjussi" ex-marine hero) do depict reality -more or less, depends on which part of the world someone lives in). Perhaps some viewers prefer fictional rom-coms' "reality" over real life's reality instead. Who knows...

I love, love, love, love, loooooove Last. To everyone complaining about there being nothing to watch...really, check it out. At first, it seems like a show that won't be for everyone, but as the story unfolds, it surprises you with just how much it has to offer for all sorts of viewers.

When I watched Healer, I had no idea that Park Won-sang would rival the OTP for favorite romance of the year with Park Ye-jin. What I love most about this drama is how it takes me to places I didn't expect when it began and manages to sprinkle in these wonderful, human moments between all the characters as it unfolds.

It really has been a very satisfying drama so far, with, dare I say, very little flaws for me to point out.

The school year has begun so I'm trying to stray away from watching past dramas and only watch currently-airing ones. It seems that Twenty Again is the next one to start up and I'm looking forward to it so I guess that'll be the next drama I watch!

Last week I did start Gaksital but am trying not to watch it too much because I heard that it doesn't get really good until about 1/3 of the way through and I don't want to become addicted and neglect my schoolwork. Maybe I'll put it on hold until break.

And...I'm down to one...Yong Pal. And it's showing signs of weakening plot.

So, I've been puttering around rewatching some earlier shows. Two weeks ago it was I Need Romance 3, a great choice. This week I tried Cunning Single Lady. Oops. Forgot how much angst there is in that one. A romance but not really a romcom.

My "tell everyone not to watch" list would not include Hotel King (which I actually liked for what it was, even with the over-the-top villain) or Blade Man, which I think was a good concept, and watchable till it became all about the ex. Blade Man I simply wouldn't recommend. Hotel King, if someone's really into the revenge thrillers, I might consider recommending with reservations.

Similarly, while I would not recommend Level 7 Civil Servant, My Secret Hotel, Blood, etc. they are simply disappointing and not to the level of my "list".

Top of my "tell everyone to avoid" list is Boys over Flowers because I think it's dated and overrated.

Second would be Fashion King, which is to be avoided at all costs, IMO.

Third would be Marry Him if You Dare due to plot falling apart and ending frustration regarding the female lead's "choice."

Tied with that would be The Woman Who Married Three Times, for the same reasons.

Amd Heirs because it's like Boys over Flowers, just not outdated. And they picked horrible actors for the part that aired in the States.

Ah Yong-pal, what happened? You had flaws but your story was intriguing. However now, you're not worth watching at 12 midnight anymore. Episode 7 was so slow. I laughed and cringe at the "Angel" dream sequence because it was too cheesy and so out of place.

Maybe I should rewatch I Remember You or read books instead.

This week's episodes are utter disappointment ..... I dont think much about plot holes as long as the drama is entertaining and tight. I dont have much medical knowledge, that is why I am unable to find any flaws in that department.

I was really liking it till ep 7, because romance thriller is my fav genre but now I dont know, these two episodes are painfully slow. I cant think what are they going to do in next ep ....

I am so sad, because it is the only drama I am watching now

me too. I can't even find the strength to rewatch episode 7 and 8, which I usually do with the dramas I came to like. the recent ones are just too empty and half-baked.

sometimes, I feel like I'm just watching a music video.

in any case, I'm still going to be optimistic. now that we get less romantic conflicts, can the show now focus more on a much significant crisis?

Definitely half-baked, episode 6 was intense and then we have episode 7. . . very anti-climactic. Then episode 8, we have them confessing their love for each other which was out of the blue. I can see how Tae-hyun can care for her since that his character. Yeo Jin was informed he saved her life, she could feel very indebted to him. But in love? Nope. There was little development or even story to say that both of them can feel such at this moment.

in any case, I’m still going to be optimistic
Let's hope the writer and everyone behind the production, get's everything together. Such a waste of characters and actors if this becomes a mess in the next couple of weeks.

This is my first official Kdrama drought. I was tolerating Yong Pal, but then Cynthia leaves....
and overall the shows tone seems off. The original premise, or so I thought, of the rebel doctor who heals on the side, had so much potential. Thank goodness for Answer Me 1997. I'm rewatching it (again) to remind me how AWESOME kdramas can be.

I could go with the new theme in Yong Pal if it were a little more coherent. It keeps having these huge WTF gaps, like how did he get her out of the hospital with nobody noticing a locked off 12th floor patient and nobody noticed?

And why does she have to call the Swiss bank from her cell phone - don't they have pay phones in Korea? Once in a while the show dips into Doctor Stranger territory, and it disrupts the whole plot flow.

And why does she insist on remaining in crocodile waters when running away with Swiss Bank money and starting a lovely life somewhere else in the world (not Jeju Island) seems like a perfectly acceptable, no - preferable option. Perhaps wilt Yong Pal at her side, although I don't feel their chemistry, I have to admit. They could all live happily ever after in the States, with his sister in treatment and living off Swiss Bank account money. His job, after all, is less than desirable. Working is so overvalued anyway if you ask me.

Hola everyone! I hope the week treated you well. I haven't watched any of the newer dramas and I've been hearing mixed things about Yong Pal so I don't know if I will check it out. I am looking forward to Twenty Again. I ventured back into dramaland after being away for a couple of years so I watched a couple of slightly older dramas this week.

Falling for Innocence/Falling for Soon Jung- I liked it. It didn't blow me away, but it was entertaining. Kim So-yeon is always awesome and I am new fan of Jung Kyung Ho. Heartless City is on my watch list.

Discovery of Romance-I'm just going to get this out of the way-Eric Mun makes my life better. I'd seen bits and pieces of this when it aired, but saved it so I could watch without interruption. I enjoyed it although I really didn't care about Nam Ha Jin and Ahn Ah Rim's story. I skipped a few of their scenes in the latter episodes.

I just started Liar Game and after that I will watch Heard It Through the Grapevine which was highly recommended by several of you last week. :)

What I'm Watching This Week:

Scholar Who Mopes in the Night: I could have sworn this week would be the last week, but apparently not? I haven't watched the eps from this week because my husband has been hogging the television & also because reasons.

Cheo Yong 2: I watched the first episode raw, and I'm waiting til this weekend to see if I can find one with subs (if you have a suggestion on that front, I'm all ears.)

K-drama Moment:

Added two more K-dramas to our DVD collection - both went immediately out. :)

I second (or thousandth) the widespread disappointment with Kdramaland lately. I don't do vampires or medical dramas (my LGS love made Dr. Stranger a regrettable exception), so Yong-Pal isn't on my to-watch list.

Looked forward to High Society, but it fizzled fast as well. And honestly, Warm and Cozy confirmed the drama slump for me. The weaksauce, manipulative male lead had me tuning out. Also, I felt like this drama had one of the weakest concepts of any Hong sisters work. With half-assed allusions to Gatsby, it was just a tourist promotion. And if people like that are moving to Jeju Island, don't expect me to stop by any time soon.

To remind myself why I ever liked the Hong Sisters, I rewatched Greatest Love/Best Love. Though not without its flaws, it was pure joy to watch: the absurd antics of Dokgo Jin, the adorable nephew. I'm looking forward to Twenty Again and Village, but anyone have nostalgic-value recommendations in the meantime?

Every time I think about High Society, I get upset. That drama had so much potential but the writer messed everything up. Yoon-ha was such a sympathetic character but the writer made her look foolish and immature and don't even get me started on the waste of the amazing chemistry between Uee and Sung Joon.
The Greatest Love is one of my favourite dramas and it's probably the only Hong Sisters' drama I didn't watch in fast forward, okay it and MGIAG.

Nostalgic value recommendations? Nostalgic yes, don't know if you'd value it... but the Hong Sisters drama that I didn't know I watched and enjoyed aeons ago was My Girl. The younger Lee Dae Hae, Lee Dong Wook and Lee Joong Gi all together, not to mention Park Shi Yeon the de rigueur 2nd lead. A little frustrating but sweet. I don't mind re-watching this show.

This week, I discovered 3 Meals A Day and while I don't watch the show consistently, I managed to watch the episodes with Park Shin-hye and the ones with Ji Sung. Park Shin-hye is really sweet and she gets along with everybody, but I especially enjoy when the Hyungs are teasing Taecyeon about his supposed love for Park Shin-hye. It's the most adorable thing watching him get so flustered every time. Even Ji Sung tried to give him some love advice. Speaking of, Ji Sung is possibly the most adorable 39 year old I have ever seen. As opposed to his characters on screen, he seems to be a little boy at heart. His fanboying over Taecyeon is so adorable, "Taecyeon can cook" "Taecyeon is handsome" "Taecyeon is such a good dancer" "Taecyeon has a firm butt" "I want a kind little brother like Taecyeon" it's a good thing Taecyeon can't act, he has to have a flaw right? He'd be too perfect otherwise.

The only currently airing drama I'm watching right now is The Eccentric Daughter-in-Law. That show is the bees knees. It's so funny sometimes but then it gets really heartfelt too. I'm really pissed off at Joon-soo and his mother though, sometimes I wish I could reach into the screen and smack their heads together, but In-young and Myung-suk are so darned adorable together.

I tried watching The Genius and I figured out why Liar Game had such poor ratings even though the show was quite good. It's because TvN's viewers were having deja vu since the show is exactly like The Genius. I couldn't watch much of The Genius because I saw Liar Game first and I hate watching knock-offs so I stopped it.
I'm rewatching It's Okay, It's Love and this show is gets me right in the heart, I cried a few times this time around when I didn't cry during the first watch. I'm also still watching We Got Married, don't ask me why I just love the show, and I'm so curios about the new pairing between Kim So-yeon and Kwak Shi-yang. I've imagined that kind of pairing but I hope they're at least entertaining.

Been a long week. Finally weekend is here! Happy OT!!

Love 911 - Good but forgettable. Great main chars though and I liked the balance of angst and romcom.

Architecture 101 - I'm still not too sure how I feel about the ending. I've seen too many first love stories. But everyone seemed to be separated by unusual circumstances like ahem, the big move, truck of doom ahem. Lol. I have yet to see anything about unsaid feelings or maybe I've forgotten about them. Once-requited love might hurt more than unrequited love. But it's more painful to realize that what you thought to be unrequited love was actually once requited. It didn't move me to tears though.

Sirius - I'm glad I finally gave this drama a chance. I watched it for Seo Joon Young who somehow began to look like Hyungsik the more eps I watched lol. And he looks like Baek Sunghyun when he smiles wide. But most of all, he looks like Jinyoung(B1A4). Ehem. Moving on, the drama was entertaining(and moving) despite its flaws. I like the premise and the blurred line between good and bad. I'm starting to wonder about how cops feel about how they're depicted in k-dramas haha. I mean the chief just lets his kidnapper go? And is the word backup even in his dictionary? But hey, I forgive the drama and mom. Yay for the cast. Now, I'm off to watching Heartless City.

Still haven't watched IRY and OMG. LOL. And I'm so excited for Twenty Again!

Kill Me Heal Me
Thanks to one beanie reccond, I pull myself to watch this, and it's itching all my little nerves and say yes, yes, yes! I know I jump in this ship too late, but how can I say? The show heals me first, but it kills me torn apart at the end.

I mostly love SE GI. Seeing him in screen make my heart aches, a lot. I feel him, breath with him, and pull down with all his sadness and sorrow.

The show isn't perfect for sure, the way I wanted the show to go isn't in my way, but def one stellar drama I couldn't forgot. One of a kind.

Yong Pal
Just lemme take a breath for Cynthia Ssinsia's leaving the show.

Midas
I watched this and feel I'm smarter already, I can conquer bank and shake one of my country biggest group-conglomerate. Lol.

Still can't make myself picking up Scholar and The Time I Love You. Any comment on whether i should continue watching them again or not? Reading recaps & comment and doesn't sound good.

Plan to watch I Need Romance 2012 in the spirit of erasing the mess that is LJW in TTILY, is it any good? I love the first INR though.

Not kdrama but i think there hasn't been a talk about Sense8. It is such a good show and Bae Doona shines there, as well with 7 other sensates. The torture of waiting the second season really T.T

Truthfully, if more than just a couple of comments on recaps give you doubts about watching, then the show is probably not worth our time watching. However it is possible that sometimes out of curiosity you may watch/continue to watch, just ... you know, ... to see for yourself and judge for yourself, OR you may just really find that your tastes are different and you enjoy the show!!!

OT: Dear Korean beanies, please help!

My husband has a korean "mentee" at work. I say "mentee" because aside from taking him out to eat Korean bbq a couple times for lunch last year when he first started working, my husband hasn't done anything else for him. (Note, this is actually more than his mentor did for him. This mentor/mentee thing is not a big deal in his company.)

Anyway, the coworker's wife just came back from some baby festival in Korea and brought us a bag with pororo training chopsticks, a pororo spoon + case, pororo bandaids, a bookmark and a couple other small things. Plus a small box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts. SHe knows we just had a baby last year.

I have never met her, only her husband once. Should we give something back to them??? I don't want to go overboard. Maybe make something? A dessert? Help?! They have 2 little boys at home, pre-school-ish age and I think the wife and boys just moved here from Korea not too long ago. Husband has been studying and working here for awhile.

Thanks!!!!!

Well, if it were me I'd go out of my way to befriend them so I could have someone to practice Korean with. :-D

But since the wife and boys haven't been in your country (US?) for long, how about inviting them out somewhere to show them something local or share a cultural custom with them? If that is feasible (don't know how young your baby is)? In my experience it's not alway easy in some places to make friends with local people, who can be very settled in their friendships and families. It can be really nice when someone reaches out.

Sigh, yes, that would be nice, but I don't even know what local thing I could show them. American cultural customs? Like what, BBQ?? I'm thinking of using this as an excuse to make these ginger cookies I found on a Korean cooking blog but don't know if it's a good idea to make a traditional Korean snack for actual Koreans. We also live in an unofficial Korean town so there's tons of good restaurants and bakeries around here. I will try the cookies, and if it doesn't work, I'll fall back on my default cream puffs. If my husband BBQ's again this year, I'll ask him to invite them, but honestly we haven't even really socialized with our own friends that much because of the baby. Thanks!

Could be Thanksgiving (bit far off though). Halloween. Any smaller events, like your own BBQ or a harvest festival or a special fair.

Or it could just be taking them to a local restaurant that's been there for a long time and is the "to-go to" for people in town/your part of town.

There's plenty of American culture, but you might be so used to it that you don't realise that for someone from somewhere else certain things are completely new. The world is more globalised now so things do travel, but still I'm sure there's lots to share. When I lived in New Mexico all of New Mexican cuisine was previously unknown to me, but also pumpkin / pecan pie, cheesecake, bagels and other things of the sort. Even fish crackers and candy corn were quite a discovery!

Well, if the Korean community is strong there, they may already have friends; but generally speaking, as someone who has been a new arrival in a foreign country more than once, I'd say that welcoming them into your social circle will be more appreciated than any particular present. In other words, inviting them to a BBQ party where they can meet people is more valuable than a gift of cookies; and if you take them sightseeing, your gesture is the real present, rather than the sights. They have time to experience the local culture by themselves, but it is a lot more difficult to become truly integrated.

0

haha, Actually, whenever we have guests, we take them to a korean restaurant because that is what our town is known for... I can picture it now. We invite them out, and they end up ordering everything for us! I'll think of something, and in the meantime, nix the korean cookie idea and try to make something they may not have had before. Thanks!

0

The Korean restaurant is actually not a bad idea; it will allow them to feel confident, not to say slightly superior :P . Ah, the joy of saying that the food is decent, but so much better at home, or just a poor imitation, and lecturing your friends about what the restaurant got right and wrong... :P

I just heard news that Yongpal been accused of plagiarism. At least that's what appeared to be the case on Naver. Because the drama has high ratings, there's a lot of jealousy and hate on it. While I agree that some viewers have issues with the slowing down of pace in ep 7 & 8 and anyone can just don't like the drama, at least be more logical in criticism. I agree with some points but there's many 'loopholes' or flaws that have been exaggerated or nitpick.

As for the work that it has been accused of copying from, here's a synopsis I got from soompi thread:

Derived from a popular manwha (manga) 'City Conquest' by Shin Hyung Bin and was illustrated by Kim Jong Seon (first published last June 9 1997). Baek Mir (Kim Hyun Joong) grew up with a rough childhood. Abandoned by his parents when he was young made him bitter about the world he lives in. He lives in a place where prostitutes are all over the place. Baek Mir hates the dirty doings of the officials in his country and swore to himself to stop them with his own fists. When he was 17 yrs old, his father (Kim Seung Woo) came back. When he started to live with his father, he didn't cope up well at the beginning. During his highschool days, he met several friends and one of them is Tae Soo Min (Unannounced). They became close, so close that Soo Min fell in love with him. When Baek Mir's father died, his whole world almost tore apart and his determination to take down the filthy society grew much stronger. He fell in love with a lady name Lee Dan Bi (Jung Yoo Mi) who is a jewelry designer and has the kindest heart. Dan Bi has a loyal suitor Cha Ji Ryong who apparently became Baek Mir's ultimate rival.

Does this even look similar?

What the k-netz are saying are that the similarities are supposedly with the comic, not the drama adaptation's synopsis, mainly male lead practises medicine illegally, involvement with gang, female lead in a coma preserved in a glass tube and some other dialogue or scenes.

I have soooooo many favourite actors who are born in '87, like JCW, SIG,Joo Won, LSG and sooo many, :) :)

I have a question, I get familiar to many Idol groups through Variety shows, and there are really mannnnyyyy of them, specially boy bands. My question is what they are going to do in their post IDOL life??? I mean, not everyone can enter into acting, and in groups I have seen all of them are not very good singers, every group has 2-3 actual singers, then what they will do in their after (Idol) life?

Renai Jidai it's called I think.

I watched a bit, but dropped it. Found the characters getting into relationships with other people just because of miscommunication/spite just too annoying.

But I'll say I didn't care much for the original either, because I found the whole premise of "We're divorced but we'll keep meeting despite the fact that we can't get over each other that way" rather grating. (Did not watch till the end.)

I will say though that the Japanese cast didn't quite convince me either – they are just okay.

As always, late to the OT party! I finished Oh My Ghostess and was somewhat disappointed in the writing. The actors carried the show, though, so it wasn't a waste of time. Just wish it could have been paced and edited better.

I'm also watching Midnight Diner, and wish I could find a place like this to go to on one of my many insomniac nights. I entertain myself by wondering what I would order if I could. When I was a child the only day I got to decide what I was going to eat was on my birthday. A trip to a "Midnight Diner" would be like celebrating my birthday whenever I wanted. Also I love the design of the counter and the almost claustrophobic feeling of the restaurant. Whoever designed the set did a wonderful job.

We're finally going to get some real rain in Seattle this weekend. I can't wait; this drought has been horrid, and the firefighters could use the help. I plan to use the rainy days to do some Kdrama marathoning - Gaksital perhaps! Happy weekend everyone!
