Happy Friday Beanies! My coworker has strep so I've been working a lot of extra hours this week as well as prepping for a few visits from friends. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer!
Murphy I've seen through episode 15 but I can't bring myself to watch 16 since it seems the inevitable idiocy is going to hit. This really could have been a shorter show and just kept the cuteness.
Hidden Identity One episode behind. I think the writing is getting a bit stronger (fewer plot holes) but this show isn't as strong as I was hoping. Still it's entertaining and makes a good choice for work. I haven't seen eight but I really hope they don't kill off sergeant. He's really the only 'fun' character and I think he of all the characters really balances out everyone - if he goes it will really change the dynamic. More Tae-Im and Kim Bum please. Most of these episode cliffhangers I find frustrating because they're really obvious and you can guess what will happen next which defeats the purpose.
I Remember You I love it - definitely my favorite right now. I which I could be more insightful but mostly I'm just super happy watching this show. I really live the overall tone and while there are some mysteries, the show clearly isn't relying on one big twist surprise reveal to make the show - instead it's really about the journey to getting there. And I'm actually enjoying all the characters which is refreshing.
I Order You I always like to watch a short series at the same time. Not very far into this but it's cute and I'm a sucker for anything with a lot if good shots.

Oh My Ghostess I'm liking this one a lot even though it's not quite what I imagined. I'm intrigued as to where this goes because there are a lot of potential pitfalls for the plot...but I also think the writer could do some brilliant stuff with it. It's got a lot of great people in it. I've actually never watched LBY before and I'm regretting it. Recs anyone? I'm also looking forward to our resident cop getting a more fleshed out story. And I may be crushing a bit on Cordon chef. I have a lot of theories on backstories too but I mostly just want to watch and see how it all unfolds.
Time I've Loved You I really want to like this and I do adore the two leads but I can't really get myself to watch it. I saw the first two and then read the recaps for the last two. I dunno.
Scholar I've only seen the first episode but it was a blast. Yes, it's cheesy, and yes I may have laughed a few times when I probably wasn't supposed to. But I enjoyed it. It felt more like what I had been hoping for with Night Watchman. I think it's sort of perfect summer fare.
Hwajung A couple episodes behind but it's still good. It's just that I dread the whole second half of this show - it's going to be such a turn around from our king. I'm also not entirely believing In Woo's change. My favorite of our heroine's guys though is still being underutilized. I don't know why they brought him back if they're essentially going to ignore him. I don't want to say goodbye to our king. Sigh.

With regards to Lee Bo Young, she's mostly a movie actress. I've only seen her in "A Werewolf Boy" and I completely loved that movie (one of my all time favourites). I'd highly recommend it. :)

"Time I’ve Loved You I really want to like this and I do adore the two leads but I can’t really get myself to watch it. I saw the first two and then read the recaps for the last two. I dunno."
This. I'm with you!
Somehow, in spite of my love for Ha Ji Won and Lee Jin Wook, I can't bring myself to care about two characters whose angst can be resolved by a simple declaration of loving each other. So, why should I waste 20 episodes watching that? If there was something meatier to the plot.... that might be a different story.

Yeah, I'm mostly at that point. I don't necessarily need giant conflicts but when you see that nothing is holding them back from each other but themselves...well, it doesn't make me feel invested in anyone else either. Like nobody really feels like a threat to me. Mostly I like LJW's character is probably just being overreactive to something that happened between his parents. But so far we've had a cheating a**hole ex, and manipulative junior, and he's got a dogged co-worker. None of them seem interesting to me. And they're great leads but because of the friendship they're already very comfortable with each other so there's not much tension there.

I'm feeling that way about this drama too. It's sweet but nothing that really grabs my attention. I think I just prefer Ariel Lin (from the Taiwanese version) over Ha Ji Won in this type of role. Cutesiness doesn't really suit Ha Ji Won IMO. I rather see her in stronger roles like Empress Ki.

Of the 20 or so Taiwan dramas that I have started, I think I have only ever finished one, and even that involved a lot of fast forward. Most of them are just much unrealistic dialogue, fluff, and draggy.

I've only tried two other dramas so that's an interesting point. Although the two I've tried were already remakes of other shows (Boys Over Flower - sorry I forget the Taiwanese name, and Absolute Boyfriend). I've definitely not tried enough to get a sense of what is the norm for Taiwanese shows but these comments aren't very encouraging lol.

Sorry but whats the meaning of an open thread?

SnarkyKitsune
July 10, 2015 at 6:43 AM
Here's a definition from Wikipedia: "An open thread refers to a blog post where readers may comment and discuss any topic that they choose. They are usually more useful on popular blogs with large amounts of traffic; they are often used when the author of the blog has no subject matter to post on or when there is a lull in posting."
Please keep in mind though that discussing spoilers for drama episodes that haven't been recapped in the blog yet is highly discouraged.
Hope that helps!

I thought that was for recaps (discussing ep 12 in an ep 11 recap when both have aired but only one has been recapped)... for the open thread, I thought the rule was, just mark it clearly that there's a spoiler coming.

I think that's the understanding too. I was lamenting in some open thread a few months back that I didn't have anyone to discuss Missing Noir M with, since there's no recap thread. And either girlfriday or javabeans said that it's okay to discuss plots in open thread.

Happy Friday, everyone! Since today is my birthday, I treated myself to the last two episodes of Healer. Sure, the show dwindled a bit towards the end, but overall it was a blast! Glad to have given it a try.
I've started Oh My Ghostess and it's a real treat, too. Great acting, nice pace, a little cinematic mood - I like it all. Hope it stays as engaging as the first two episodes were.
Oh My Ghostess actually pushed me to start Pasta. I've been eyeing it for a while now (not a big fan of the lead actress) and finally watched episodes 1 and 2. So far so good - I really like dramas/movies about restaurants.
Oh, and me and my husband are a little behind on Hidden Identity (ep 5 currently). It seems like the show is getting better, so we're still tagging along.

Hey beanies~
So yay for our local tv station for airing Mask just one day later than Korea's telecast! Woohoo...but I only got to watch the last few minutes of ep13 yesterday because I had so much homework to do T.T
I have been anticipating for Minwoo to know the truth for some time, and I haven't watched ep14 yet (it's airing now but my dad is watching news :(), but I hope he'll still love Jisook. MAH OTP.
I love it when Minwoo is like planning how to propose etc but ended being spontaneous when his plans kinda flew out of the window ;). I also love that now their relationship is sweet and cute, but I prefer it when they were both unsure and vulnerable.
GET OFF THE TV, DAD.

Hello beanies!! hihi
I wanted to stop watching dramas during weekdays and just marathon them on weekends but naaaah can't resist it!
Mask - I'm sort of worried how the Show will take us but then the previous episodes had been really sweet and I love our lead couple! How many episodes are there?? hihi
Oh!My!Ghostess - I cannot wait for the this week's episode!!
I Remember You - Love how fast the progress of Hyeon's memory of Ji An, at least they didn't prolong it. The subplots are quite painful to watch but a good pain hihi
Should I watch, Beautiful Bride and My Love Eun Dong????? I'll wait for Junki's drama to air 4-6 episodes then start hihi

Only watching Oh My Ghostess at the moment, which is lovely so far. Very much hope it stays good – too many dramas have fallen apart after a few episodes recently.
Can't get myself interested in anything else, not Scholar, even less In Time with You (didn't care particularly for the original one, and from the recap, I just get the impression it's a little boring) and High Society, which I did try at the beginning, just makes no sense to me. These people are on some weird delulu planet. Well, maybe if I could care for them, I could relate a bit... but I don't. Tinsy bit for Jiyi, though I find her a bit too dumb at times. And why are all these people talking about marriage when they have barely just met?
Fuben Benriya finished gloriously (and their snow building Guinness World Record was just genius! Seriously, the actors must have had such a blast during this production). Sadly none of the Japanese dramas scheduled for summer look particularly interesting.
Did watch a few films recently, two Korean animations (Oseam, Yobi the Five-Tailed Fox) as well as the first feature from Wong Fu productions, Everything before Us, which was actually quite enjoyable. Nothing super original, nothing too deep, but the characters felt real and relatable.

And in High Society, it's not just the main characters I struggle to care about. There are these disconnected side plots about the mistress or YH's mother. Considering how much time and effort is spent on them, I guess I'm supposed to somehow care about them.
"In Time", well, I don't know the original one. So far I learned that friendship is when two people who are secretly in love continuously deceive each other.

July 10, 2015 at 7:24 AM
Oh, I don't care about any of the characters in High Society, including the second couple (I guess some will be shocked by this ;-)).
With In Time with You, I have the impression from the recaps that Ha Ji-won's character isn't anywhere near as annoying as Ariel's was, and that Won has more backbone than Bolin Chen's character did, which is all encouraging, but the way the story is unfolding just makes me think "Why is it that they aren't together?". What conflict is there that has kept them apart for 17 years, and that's going to keep them apart for another 8 or 10 episodes? A girl that manipulates herself into a relationship with Won but that he actually has zero interest in just doesn't do it for me. And Hana isn't in any serious relationship with anyone else either – that at least would create conflict.
Watching tends to be better, but the recap doesn't inspire me to watch (not the recappers' fault of course, they all write wonderfully).

>Why is it that they aren’t together?
I don't know the original version but in the korean there is a reason Won won't confess his true feelings and this mystery is supposed to keeps us interested in the story. If that reason will make any sense or not is another story. :) I'm watching to find out, and because I like one sided crushes, and I'm also trying to forget my dislike of Ha Ji Won.

July 10, 2015 at 8:58 AM
Except that ep. 4 revealed that it wasn't one-sided, right? Even we all know they'll end up together, but we need some serious (not contrived) conflict keeping them apart NOW. And I need some more hint's on Won's mystery because I can't imagine anything that would stop him for 17 years. I can imagine him caring in high school and being worried (whether about embarrassing himself or Hana being hurt by others) but once they left school? Once they matured a little out of that high school mind? And with apparent support of their families? Fear of losing friendship, sure, but 17 years is a loooong time to harbour a crush so there better be a damn good reason for it.
Lixie
July 10, 2015 at 10:47 AM
Yes, it isn't but he has no idea she likes him too, besides she is fickle, she doesn't really know what, least of all who she likes, she was surprised to feel some attraction in ep 4, and she gets jealous sometimes, but it's unconscious.
It's miles away from his 17 year old love. Basically what keeps them apart is his mystery reason and her stupidity. If my long time friend tells me he will never fall in love with me for no reason I'd surely ask why. If his reason will make sense I do not know and I agree with everything you said about Won better having a big motive though we all know logic is not strong in kdramas. :) I'm still curious.
Jon G.
July 10, 2015 at 7:48 AM
Yeah, so far there is an immense lack of conflict. It's difficult to get all angsty about the hurdles the main "couple" has to overcome when there are none.

Yeah... Ariel was seriously dating another guy and, you know, the relationship was adult. (Though I'll say that TW drama seriously messed up when the OTP finally decided to have an adult relationship. Fortunately, there's no way the K-drama will repeat any of those scenes.)
Maybe the introduction of the new second lead (not just the cameo guy) will bring some really conflict?
Jon G.
July 10, 2015 at 7:52 AM
High Society's second couple. Well. I don't know why, but CS's "charm" wore off pretty fast for me. Now that I recognise the actor's routine, it's pretty monotone.
The story itself has been told millions of times, it's not as redundant as everything in "Mask" of course, but it's still completely unoriginal.

I've actually heard the opposite, which is interesting. I mean, that Ariel's character was a flawed but fierce bitch, whereas the remake turned her into an unprofessional, infantile nitwit. In my limited exposure to her the nitwit shoe seemed to fit, but I have to say I did drop the show after the first episode, when she threw a tantrum during a meeting because she was jealous of her ex-bf's new gf...

Well, I found Ariel's character extremely grating – she just took Li Da Ren completely for granted and he deserved someone much better IMO.
I know some people didn't mind her (or maybe loved her), but I also know plenty of people who thought the same as me (i.e. that she just got more and more annoying).
Everyone has their own preferences!

Haven't tried Heat – hadn't heard of it. Not sure its topic really interests me. Sounds like one of those "x thinks themselves superior but slowly learns". There have been so many of these kind of dramas (e.g. Kamo, Kyoto e Iku), and although they are not bad, they are not particularly exciting either. No actor to get me interested either. (Rather: I struggle to watch Inagaki Goro in anything because I can never get the horrible and super-irritating brother he played in Nagareboshi out of my mind.)
Gangsta anime?

Hi Everyone!
I hope you are all doing well today.
Watched this week:
Mask - Only caught ep 7 this week. ....... Totally loving this drama!....... Seok-hoon, really? A hidden camera in the bathroom??
Hwajeong - Last week I said that I may end up watching this whole drama, however, this week I didn't watch any episodes because I got distracted with Seo In-gook's and Jang Na-ra's new drama. ...... So with this and everything else I'm watching, I simply ran out of time.
I Remember You - Watched the first 4 episodes and oh my goodness, I really liked it! ....... Part of me says, "Oh wow. We already have all the answers (regarding some of the principal characters)." Then I immediately think, "Wait. That's too easy. We can't have all the answers this soon. There has to be more to it."
Marriage Not Dating - It took forever, but I finally finished this! Yay! ....... Great from beginning to end. ....... I already know that years from now, this drama will still make me laugh out loud.
Divorce Lawyer In Love - The second lead decided to propose but he can't decide on which engagement ring to present ..... so he buys 10 of them! Ha! That's soooooo like him.
King of Mask Singer - I just watched the episodes where Cleopatra showed up and I'm pretty sure that I know who it is.
That's it for now. ....... Take care everyone and have a great Friday

Hwajeong is good but it's also one I tend to push off when there are other shows on my list.
I have similar thoughts on 'I Remember You'. They've pretty intentionally given us a lot of supposed answers but I can't help wondering if they have a bunch of tricks up their sleeves. However, I think this show is really good regardless. I don't think there have to be a lot if surprised when the storytelling is so good.

It's unfortunate, but I may just have to pause Hwajeong for a little bit. I kind of don't want to, but there are just so many hours in a day! ....... I told myself that I'd catch up this weekend with a couple of episodes, but we'll see.
I Remember You is certainly interesting. I really want to see where they're going to go with this story.

I think that's why I've always been afraid to start these epic sageuks - it's so hard to find the time to keep up for so long! I'm surprised I'm only a week behind but so many new shows started up (plus Injo's taking over soon) so it's being shoved to the back burner.

Ghostess
I never know what to expect from a show as I never watch promotional material like trailers and stuff. I usually don't even read the synopsis.
Maybe because of that, I was surprised by this show. It copied several core themes from other shows, but it did this very, very well. So far, very entertaining, even though I have my doubts about some of the aspects concerning the "cohabitation" of the two female lead characters in the same body and how that will be balanced (if at all).
High Society
Yawn. I'm really disappointed with this one. The ethical dichotomies are extremely heavy-handed and over-verbalised. The character design is a mess.
I Remember You
Early on, the tone, the character design and the very light-footed genre mixing was extremely intriguing. The level dropped a little bit and the integration of the procedural with the overall plot aspect is a bit clunky, but it's still rather entertaining.
Mask
Really bad writing, extremely lazy character design, second-hand embarrassment-worthy pretentious directing, and a plot that is still just going in circles (but at least it exists now).
Somehow I can still keep watching it, it must be doing something right.
The Time That I Loved You
Only four setup episodes so far, and no actual conflict yet. Let's see where this is going ...
My Beautiful Bride
Very positively surprised by the actresses in that show. The early episodes did try a lot and succeeded in much of it. The main plot however makes me a bit nervous because of the strong Princess Peach vibes ...

OMG I wasn't expecting much but I'm loving it. After 2 eps it's almost easy to know why, it has so many cliches I usually adore, grouchy but kind lead, switched identity, one sided crush, shy and smart character, and most all, good use of a fantasy element.
Mask Maybe you finally found the comedy in this. :)
MBB I was convinced kdrama writers did not know how to write a decent mystery drama but until ep 5 this is doing very well. Not sure why you are liking the actresses though, they are just ok for me, maybe we have so many bad actresses that when they are average it seems great. :) The crazy way the cop has a glowy makeup makes me smile in all her scenes but I like that actress. She had that in Valid Love too, maybe she demands it? I still like her.
The actresses that are making a really good job for me are the 2 girls from Oh My Ghostess.

Mask
I was aware of some of the comedy aspects: Like the evil supervillain who is just a pathetic loser who constantly fails despite no opposition. He was very funny and can still be at times, even though now everything is just repetitive.
I'm still not sure whether JS's ridiculously awful family is supposed to be funny, or annoying, or what?
I'm still not even remotely sure why the show lingers around the loan shark, who hasn't contributed anything to the show at all. Is he supposed to be funny?

If I may jump in here, I have no idea about the loan shark other than to say he and his sidekick are there for visual comedy. ..... I mean, with the bad wig and styling straight out of the 1970's and all. ....... *laughing just thinking about it*
On a bit more serious note, I may be wrong, but there may be something up with JS's father other than the "always in debt" guy we've seen so far. He may be hiding something from the past. Then again, I'm only up to ep 7 and I'm just guessing.

The comedy I love in Mask in completely unintentional. :) When they are trying to be funny, like with the loan shark, it's just silly or boring, but it's rare, most of the times they are just going with the flow of craziness and that's what makes me laugh so much. The crazy stalkers just a few steps away. The super controlling villain who never tried to find out who killed his love. The drugs and ocd of the lead that comes and goes. The corny dialog. The rich and famous wife and sister who can have a different company job each week. The inane amount of ads every episode is a joke in itself. :P Take the last scene of ep. 13, I know mostly everyone else who likes the show is just swooning with the romantic crossing of bridge metaphor while I'm laughing, because it is not even related to his past but all of a sudden he will get better just holding her hand and crossing that stone bridge, that kind of nonsense is precious. :)
Fans of Mask, is you read this, do not get angry, I'm a fan too. :)

You're right - the "comedy" sucks. What is hilarious is much of the stuff that is NOT supposed to be comedy. The show has more plot holes than the Titanic, but I keep watching it in spite of myself just to see what really dumb plot device will come up next.

From what I can figure out the loan shark is nothing more than a money pit for our heroine to pour money into for no good reason.

You don't even read synopses for shows? How to you decide which to try? Or do you just give them all a chance?
I agree that Ghostess is handling things well so far but the real test is how they'll handle the 2-in-1 problem. I'm optimistic since they're doing well at the moment but it's just so tricky. I'd be a lot happier if the ghost wasn't trapped and instead just took over sometimes (and could perhaps even have conversations with our lead since she can obviously see her).

From my experience, "plot" is not exactly the strength of K-dramas. Most of them have the same stock plot, and if I read about that beforehand, I'll be repelled enough to never give them a try.
I very often just try the first 10 minutes of a show and watch whether I like the style, tone, or setup technique. Very often, if the writing and directing is done well, the show will be good enough. It's a much better indicator for me than plot or character introduction information.

Well a lot of plot is recycled, but I feel that in a lot of TV, not just kdramas. It's certainly not a guarantee that I'll like a kdrama but there are definitely shows that I know won't be my cup of tea because of genre/plot. It's more a way to cross something off the list as opposed to a way to know what I'll like if that makes sense.
But I'm pretty delayed in knowing if I'll like a show. I find the first episode is usually not that representative of my feelings overall for a show so it takes me 3-4 to really grasp my feelings.

See that's why i like High Society. It makes no bones about being a morality tale in which folks say and over-say the themes. It's old-fashioned in that way and fun. And trust me, some folks need to hear the thematic questions verbalized in a blatant preachy way.
Time that I loved you: The only conflict is in the viewer, which is what is bothering me. We are wondering if we should be for the second leads or not. And it's hard to wonder when we don't have all the facts in. Or did they tell why hero decided not to date heroine back in the day and forever?

I like several rather different shows for very different reasons.
I really liked the slow and thorough "Pasta" despite all its shortcomings, I really enjoyed the relationship-driven "Can we get married", I marvelled at the commitment of "Marriage Not Dating" despite its terrible choices.
I have a weakness for character design and development, hence I really enjoyed shows like "I hear your voice" and "It's okay, it's love".
And, of course, there are just really great shows: "Misaeng" and "Heard it through the Grapevines".

I agree with most of your comments.
Mask This started off so good, and then went sideways. It seems like the original plot just kind of poofed. Starts off with people getting beat up, murdered, and all the rest - then deteriorates into the heroine giving away handbags. Two stupidest scenes were (1) taking over a coffee shop that is losing money, spending tons to renovate it, and then give it to her family who has zero positive experience in business or taking care of money. (2) the "bury the guys in a grave scene" - Uhm, perhaps my 1st grade science is wrong here, but wouldn't filling up a hole with dirt while they are still alive kind of let them climb out of it? And why was that idiot throwing handfuls of dirt OUT of the hole? One of the stupidest scenes I have seen since Sharnado.

@Windsun33 HAHAHA, plus in the middle of the day some black-suited guys are baring alive two poor men who are not screaming at all!!! So realistic ;-) Where is that place? On another planet?
I think we'll never see the original idea of any drama when the ratings are great and when they stink...That practically means always. Not even cable networks can escape this curse; they may extent their shows or cut them back depending on the feedback.
P.S. The coffee place is just another PPL *sigh* I've stopped finding any real meaning to all those sceneries that keep changing constantly according to sponsors hence money...

True .... Mask is a really big disappointment for me .. 1st six episodes were good, intriguing then suddenly fell apart. Now I am not getting the revenge arc , Man many crimes are done for money, position and power, that's enough... They wasted a greedy, villainous character who was emotional but doesn't let emotions to block his ambitions. But what they want from to sympathise with him because he was wronged once???????? Why???
And I don't understand "Trust in my lies" policy!!!! It annoys me

Happy OT beanies.. :-)
-THE GENIUS S4: It's a pity that they don't get a chance to use that genius moment (all those things they found out to distinguish each coin) in the main match. If only Dongmin realize it earlier that they won't have enough coin left to make the coin they choose become the winner. Well, at least the DM is epic (and tactical yutnori is one of my fave). Dongmin completely slays it. Never know I will root for Yohwan just so that I can watch his blossoming bromance with Jinho.
-MASK: Can I just say that I love, love, love Minwoo and Jisook together? Such an adorable lovebird, those two. But why, oh why, writer-nim, you don't just make Jisook come clean earlier about her identity? Now I'm dreading their upcoming angst.
-MY BEAUTIFUL BRIDE: Usually I'm not a fan of long and repetitive flashback, but when a drama put it so beautifully with layered meaning that enable you to get a different story each time they show it, I just can't help but admire it. Idk why, but it feels like there is something more to that flasbacks. Because Dohyung's devoted love for Jooyoung definitely speaks another story.
-OH MY GHOSTESS: Kim Seulgi as a virgin ghost is such a riot. And Park Boyoung as SoonAe is just plain great, I have to actually take a second look to make sure she is the one who did all the talking. It's as if Seulgi really jump into her body. It's also nice to have a hero that's not a total jerk, cause dramaland is already overpopulated with them. And Jo Jungseok is so hawwt (that's always a plus ;-)).

I had a strange post-eating experience in the Google Groups today. I managed to post 3 other messages but the one on what shows I'm currently watching just disappeared or never got posted. Trying again got me a server error mesage. So... I'll just have to re-type ? *gah! sigh!*
Mask - Wonderfully compelling still with a good dose of laughs ? and relationship building stuff. Now it's no longer the big, bad alone who is taking the cake, but the good guys (ok the good girl, in particular) have shaped up to be a force to be reckoned with. We've come to the interesting part where more unpredictable stuff can be doled out by our resident 'baddies' who are also probably crazy-delusional, which makes them more unpredictable, and the position of our OTP more precarious. Thrilling! And there's a delicious ? love story in the making as well, the best kind to me... reluctant pair who become partners, who choose to trust each other and find each other lovable. The best part... they both expresses it indirectly-directly and have become a team. Lovely stuff! ?
I Remember You/Hello Monster - I love the writing and the execution in this show. It is well though out and planned, with the right morsels of information coming along organically with the solving of each intriguing crime. Exactly what I'd hoped for in TGWSS and My Secret Hotel, which those shows did not deliver. Getting to know what makes our lead couple tick as individuals and as a team and the answer to the question about how monsters are created got me totally invested in this show and it's still paying off well. ?
The Time I Loved You/The Time We Were Not In Love - A sweet, smooth flowing show (maybe getting a little too sticky sweet and boring for some?) that is meandering along with all the expected blocks and shunts in a drama relationship. With the arrival of the long awaited ? Yoon Kyun Sang, we hope for a change of pace or direction... something unexpected maybe? It's still a pleasant watch and the sparks are threatening to fly so now's not the time to stop watching!
My Love Eun Dong - Another 'as expected' kind of show with full, true, blue heart-wracking romance. It's about time the 2nd leads get more active to throw more spanners into the works. It won't be pretty and I'd rather have no 2nd leads at all, but what to do, then it won't be dramatic and it won't be a drama LOL! Very well acted by the main couple ... I cannot totally approve but my heart does go out to them.
My Beautiful Bride - Kinda dark, kinda scary, typically OCN style, but good. A show with not 1 but 2 strong female leads (I can't tell if one is supposed to be a second lead but it does not matter) and so well acted by everyone. My heart is no longer strong enough ? to take in all the action scenes (can be bloody and definitely painful) but Kim Mu Yeol is fantastic in them and in the more emotional scenes as well.
Oh My Ghost(ess) - Much better...

Oh My Ghost(ess) - Much better than expected and I didn't really think I'd continue after taking a peek, but after 2 episodes, I'm in. Park Bo Young delights me. ? I can actually see some of the Kim Seul Gi ghost character Soon Ae, in Bong Sun ie Park Bo Young is doing a fantastic job of making 2 characters distinct in her and one of them really behaves and sounds like Soon Ae. So we have our female version of Ji Sung in playing at least 2 characters. I like that it's got heart as well as laughs and that all characters are again well rounded and interesting. ?
High Society - I'm only watching it in bits and reading recaps. At least developments are taking place even though they may be happening in a series of snapshots soap opera style and gives a feeling of a lack of coherence. So far no one in it engages me enough for me to want to watch it all the way. ?
Orange Marmalade and Masked Prosecutor - With some regret, and no time, these being the least compelling to me got dropped. I think I'll still go back to Masked Prosecutor though, once this great haul of summer shows are over and the going gets slow. :)

I agree with you about Eun Dong. Besides my undying love for Joo Jin-Mo, it's now safe to say that the script underwent vast changes. Instead of a romantic "Wife's Credentials", we got to see a super-melo romance which is fine by me. One objection: what is the purpose of Kim Yoo-Ri's character? She became obsolete and now is presented like a stalker without the actual stalking. I mean she has no interaction with Joo Jin-Mo and in the past five or more episodes she's depicted as simply insane. Poor actress...

True about Kim Yoo Ri. I do kind of feel sorry for her generally... although she's sweet looking, she also has that arrogant look that seems to put her in 2nd lead, bitchy, proud, jealous wannabe-gf or ex-gf I believe in practically all of the shows she's been in. I wonder if she'll get a chance to play the main female lead one day. Perhaps she still has not shown the right acting chops to take that on.

My Love Eun-Dong: I am praying that Ji Eun Ho and Eun-Dong puts that despicable husband in his place!! And to think I pitied that man at once....urghh.
That's all for now hope you all have a wonderful weekend!! I know mine will be hectic since my city (Toronto) is hosting the Pan Am games this year and today is the opening ceremony YAY!

I forgot about one show!
Orange Marmalade The Joseon section is definitely better than the modern section, but it also had more time to tell it's story. I liked it but it was still very flawed. Why was Jaemin able to cut her? I was confused in that point. There was actually far too much unexplained fantastical stuff in the lady episode. I hate when people take on fantasy/supernatural without understanding world building. Things are just thrown in to look cool and then random powers/events happen with no warning and just feel like deus ex machina. I appreciated the characters a lot more in this era though and I laughed that the treaty was basically just a footnote at the end.

hah, working on my own vampire story so I forgot about Open Thread!
I feel like my character is turning into a tsundere and I heard they are not very popular anymore? I dunno. but that´s how he is.
dramas: Night Scholar, obviously! I am not obsessing over it and it has some weird moments (dat hand!) but I wish they played up the cheesy elements even more - but keep them as interval acts only. you know. like a comic gag moment to the fullest, not even trying to be serieous, and then continue normally. I feel like it has many different styles. I want even more action though...
I would like to watch LSH as Gwi without a filter. up on a stage. experience the performance, not just have it playing on my screen. I am really curious how he would do in theater. Too much to carry 2 hours nonstop?
Well, I hope Teacher will continue to do well and Kim So Eun´s part as the doppelganger is interesting.
I liked the guy who looked like a dog, too bad they killed him. woof.
no re-editing cliffhangers or weird background music, plz. then we´re running smooth.

LSH as Gwi is awesome. As I've commented before, he hearkens back to old-school Dracula. I feel like LSH's appearance definitely helps in the whole "seductive evil vampire" schtick. Bela Lugosi would be proud!
Best thing about Scholar: LJK and LSH and their chemistry.
Worst Thing: Sometimes the melodrama is a bit too over-the-top and just winds up as silly. Also, the music is terrible for what they're trying to do.

Best and worst thing about Night Scholar for now?
Best: Excellent cast (seriously even Changmin does well). Nice costume design and really cool villain.
Worst: The excessive loudness and intrusiveness of the background score (which I would love if they could only turn it down). Plot holes/stupid tendenncy to repeat sequences with bonus scenes.

Best: Cast. I mean, well, LJK always gets my vote but so far everyone seems pretty on point with their parts.
Worst: I think it's still struggling a bit with keeping a consistent tone...but it might be better in ep 2.

Hey, y'all! Happy Friday! :)
I missed last week because I was driving my youngest to my Mom's for the summer. In route, I had many interesting adventures.
What I'm Watching:
Scholar Who Walks the Night: Lee Joon-ki is supernaturally attractive. Seriously, is he descended from faeries or something?
Hidden Identity: I'm behind; I'll catch up this weekend.
Pink Ladies: Ok, I'm not exactly watching this Chinese series, but I'm doing segments for it on Viki, so I'm kind of following it. Without subs.
What I wish I was watching:
Cheo Yong: Next month! Squeeeeee!
K-drama Moments:
On my trip, the husband & I decided to eat at as many Korean restaurants as possible.
Korea Garden, in Valdosta, GA was great - delicious spicy pork, a huge bento lunch (with a mountain of tempura veggies, kimbap, rice, pork, and lettuce). Their kimchi was heavily fermented, & I've confirmed that I prefer fresh to aged. Also, when the owner answered the phone, I heard her say "Where are you right now?" & it took a second to realize she'd said it in Korean. Aw, yisss. Language-learning ftw.)
Unfortunately, they had to close early for a family emergency.
On the way back, we stopped in Atlanta to eat at a Korean Taqueria (a dinky place in an industrial park, with excellent reviews). It was closed.
Then we drove downtown to eat at a different Korean Taqueria (called "TaKorea")...it was also closed. We ate at the Chinese place next door, which was...ok. Not what I wanted. (And I think I've reset my spice gauge, because their spicy chicken was not even mildly spicy.)
The next day, we went to a third Korean fusion place (called "Country Foodly") in Gainesville, but it was - guess what? CLOSED.
:expression of annoyance:

Oh my goodness, your trip! ....... Like, what are the chances of every single place you go to being closed, right?? I swear, you want to think that if someone even attempted to coordinate all those closures, they wouldn't be able to pull it off for one reason or another. But then this happens. I'm sorry you and your husband weren't able to try the restaurants you were looking forward to.
Gotta say though, I'm liking that "TaKorea" name. ....... If you guys are driving back later to pick up your child, I hope you guys find all those places open so that you can try them!
And yeah, Lee Joon-ki. ....... Put him in Joseon garb and drop him on a sageuk set and it's quite the sight.

:shrugs: Who knows? Atlanta is tons larger than it was when I was in college & hung out there (:mumble30someyearsago:). TaKorea isn't in a bad neighborhood - it's right near downtown, close to the Hilton. The other taqueria was in an industrial park, not fancy or anything, but it looked like every other blue-collar part of town.

Really excited about the second season of Cheo Yong as well. It was one of my favourites from last year.
Are you watching My Beautiful Bride? What a surprise this one is! I know from other conversations that we have very similar tastes for the dark procedural genre. It's an interesting take on the whole fated to be together, first love trope. I don't know whether to be charmed by Do-hyeong's behaviour or disturbed by it. Kim Moo-yul brings an ominous, stalker-ish and way too obsessed quality to his performance. It's as if, after they met in their mid-teens, his whole life has been defined by his relationship with Joo-young. Everything from his army service to his choice of career is either to impress her or to give her exactly what she wants. He's a vacuum.

The title put me off as well but I decided to check it out and ended up marathoning the first 6 episodes back-to-back. This is something I rarely do and it's a good thing my husband and sons are off at the in-laws' summer place! It's that good and the writing is impressive. I like OCN procedurals, like Reset and Cheo Yong, because they seem to have a real beginning, middle and end, unlike other dramas (Mask, I'm looking at you!) which start strong then take us on a meandering, aimless journey through rocky terrain in the middle only to reach a wtf end several episodes too late.

Hi Beanies!
Happy Friday!
I only managed to watch few dramas per week now, due to the combination of work, games, household chores and current unhealthy obsession on Mask...
Mask - please be good till the end!! *pray*
I could watch Ji Sook and Min Woo in their own drama, probably 100+ eps daily drama with lots of skinship and cheesy lines.. Hahaha.. They need their own spinoff, or at least reunite Joo Ji Hoon and Soo Ae next time, Dramagods! Their chemistry is just asdfghjkl... MY and SH are on the path to destruct each other, a match made in hell indeed. But somehow I'm not annoyed by the villains, (well, ofc except the loansharks) I also feel bad for them.
Time We Were Not In Love - Bad timing Choi Won and Oh Hana all around.. I dunno how long the writers can keep doing this. But currently the drama is boring. The only thing save the drama is the chemistry between Lee Jin Wook and Ha Ji Won. They're awesome, Hana's family is adorable, but other than that, esp after L's departure I don't see anything exciting. Maybe Hyung (YKS) can provide the excitement again.. I don't know.. But if CW and OHN still in misunderstanding mode or not even acknowledge their own feelings for much longer it would gonna frustrate the viewers.
SWWTN - Maybe tomorrow when I have free time I'll pick up this drama. I have read mixed opinions regarding this drama. One thing for sure, LJK is surely awesome, both knetz and i-fans agree on that..
Put on hold I Remember You and Hwajung. Really didn't have time to continue both, though I'm still curious with the story development.
I'm curious with High Society too because people left and right praise the secondary couple (Im Ji Yeon - Park Hyung Shik) but dislike the main couple.. Well, I myself dislike UEE's acting so I can't bring myself to watch it, but PHS looks adorable in all the stills I happened to see.
That's all for me.. Hope you'll have great weekend folks!

*Mask* Okay, this drama has pretty much ruined my life. I have watched this week's episodes, and I can't stop thinking about it. I don't know if it's because the drama's really good or if I happen to have an unhealthy obsession for it... Anyway, right now, nothing can divert my attention to this except for I Remember You. ^.^
*Oh My Ghostess* I. Love. It. The acting is great (way to go Park BoYoung!) and the comedy is top notch. I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. I don't think episode 1 was that great because it was mainly just setting up for what's to come, but episode 2 really did me in. Poor SoonAe finally remembered a part of her life that she had forgotten as a ghost. And what is she going to do when her family's right in front of her and she's a ghost in another body. *~*
*I Remember You* Is definitely my favorite drama right now. As I predicted, the lead's chemistry is adorable. I'm sucker for their bickering relationship. I love that everything is revealed to us when it's revealed to the characters, because it kind of makes me feel like I'm secretly part of the story. I totally believe that Lawyer Jung is Min, and I have a sneaking suspicion that JoonHo is either JoonYoung or related to JoonYoung. This drama has me anticipating what's to come, and I totally love the directing. ^-^
*The Time I Loved You* This drama feels like a nice summer breeze and I'm enjoying each episode. However, I am not really invested in it, just enough to watch it 'til the end. The actors are pretty good, and I really like Lee JinWook. I'd like to see some his other projects, any recommendations?
*High Society* I gave up watching it and stick to the recaps now. I probably would've dropped the show, but I like the second leads. The beginning of this series was nice, but as we got to know "more" about our leads, I really didn't like them, and then even the some of the things the second leads did got on my nerves. >_<
*Scholar of the Night* Although some of the vampire stuff is cheesy, I totally love it. Honestly, I tend to hate vampire things because of Twilight, but this one I really love. The backstory is heart tugging and sad, almost making me cry. The second episode however was great on letting us know more about the Female Lead and such. I just love that the story is moving forward fairly quickly. I personally like the fact that SungYeol knows YangSun's true identity early on, because it means more of SungYeol's cheekiness can come out. ^_~

Lee Jin Wok: Nine and another recommendation for Someday Someday bonus: you get Bae Doona as the family lead, another film actress like Park Bo Young so some excellent acting. Second male lead is atrocious though, but second female lead is one of those rare, awesome ones (the non-scheming kind!).

I’m so happy the weekend is here. I’m looking forward to watching Oh My Ghostess and Time Time I Loved You. I’m more excited to watch Oh My Ghostess since my sister is now on board and we can watch it together.

Hello benies, hope you're all well !! :)
Empress Ki: It took me more time then I anticipated, and I liked it way more then I anticipated. Since I'm quiet unfamiliar with sageuk I was rather scared to start it, yet I just could not stop ! It a visual pleasure, everything looks so beautiful. The acting is brilliant (Ha Ji won-nim I bow down in respect to you !). I didn't finish a sageuk since Dong-yi and I did not feel the need to skip any episode with EK. I was going to watch Hwajung, but it's too much sageuk for me as of now :). Will definitely pick it up later in the year though.
My beautiful Bride: YEEEEEEES OMG this is so good !! Kim Moo-Yul is playing Do-Hyeong like a boss !! And my Lee Si-Young is just as good. It unraveling quiet unexpectedly (for me at least) and it leave me with so many questions There is definitely something rather scary about this drama. I LOVE IT !!
Oh My Ghostess: This is fantastic, It cute without being chessy, comical and somewhat heart breaking at times. The lead and supporting cast are brilliant My Seul-Gi is fantastic ! TVN thank you for picking this project !!
Toho Nanahun: The story is focused on a 32-year-old Kurosaki Yoriko who has no boyfriend, no friends and no job. She starts to live alone for the first time and comes in touch with a new world. Saying that KY is a loner would probably be an understatement because, the only interaction that KY has is with her sister who comes to visit, and the cashier at the bento shop where she gets her daily lunch. She spends her days lazing around doing nothing, eating, sleeping and staring into space hoping for answers to fall from the sky.
This is as slice of life as it gets. each episode is a sort of character study about KY.It’s brilliant how so much character development is packed into what appears to be absolutely nothing. This is an incredibly introspective / introverted show and I can somehow feel who much care the writer put for each characters and the tiny mini world they live in. The pace may be terribly slow for some, but if you give it a chance, it will hopefully grow on you and surprise you.

Hi all. I'm still new to Kdrama and have started and not finished a lot of things, both old and new. The problem is seeing something that really hooks me (Coffee Prince, Kill Me Heal Me), then seeing other, related dramas that just don't do it. My daughter and I still talk about what a train wreck Mary Stayed Out All Night was.
So I'm really excited about Oh My Ghostess. First 2 episodes show lots of promise. Loving the complexity of the story and level of acting. And Kim Seulgi. She's great! Please give her more screentime!
Question: how quickly does DF put up new episodes? I believe Ep 3 has aired in Korea all ready. The wait is killing me! They'd better be quicker than when KMHM was on!

My daughter and I still talk about what a train wreck Mary Stayed Out All Night was.
Sometimes when a drama was "bad," it's actually a better watch than if is was just so-so because you can get so much discussion out of it. Other train wrecks good for discussion (IMO): Marry Him If You Dare, Love Rain, Beautiful Man, She's So Loveable. Of course, some people consider these their favorite drams EVER, so to each his own.
Question: how quickly does DF put up new episodes? I believe Ep 3 has aired in Korea all ready. The wait is killing me! They’d better be quicker than when KMHM was on!
It depends on the license. Sometimes they have to delay a week because another site has the primary license and vice-versa. I am a QC on Viki, so I mostly watch there, but have been known to go to a few other sites when they don't have the drama.

Hi Beanies!
I know it's not popular with posters on the open thread, but I love High Society. The extra characters (the mistress, the siblings) do make sense to me. I mean the mistress thinks she has been doing the wife a favor by keeping her husband from having multiple lovers. And she expresses her condolences for the loss of her son--but not to the father who also lost his son. Hillarious. The sister who is just into posting photos of herself on Instagram is so typical of the Instagram users (especially Korean ones), she is cartoonish. Love that. I don't need to CARE about her. Really, this show is like watching the shenanigans of my extended family. I really feel for Chang-soo and Yooh-Na, who are so naive and trusting. It's hard to be a young adult and learn that what you had at home is not reality.
As for the Bromance, wonderful. When Joon-Ki expressed his thoughts to Chang-soo, I was surprised how maturely Chang-soo listened. It's not that I agreed with Joon-Ki, since I feel he is more elitist that Chang-soo, and self-righteous about it to boot, but I felt it was good for them to get the crap out in the open.
And Chang-soo's crazy mother is driving him and Ji-yi to do exactly what she doesn't want him to do--get her pregnant. When will the chaebol mothers ever wake up? (Well, at least in A Little Love Never Hurts the chaebol mother did.) I hate it when the chaebol family uses withdrawal of money to control the children. It's not the money that controls them, it's the loss of your love/approval, you idiots.
Okay, rant over.
Also watching:
Mask--Her beautiful smile. Love it.
I Remember You--Growing on me.
My Love, Eun Dong--Sexy.
A Word from Warm Heart--For Lee Sang-Wo and Ji Jin Hee and Park Seo Joon.
Working on:
Yoo-Na's Street--Now available on Viki.
My Unfortunate Boyfriend--Almost over.
San-ok's Three Children--For Lee Sang-Wo. Starts Aug 15.

my thoughts exactly on High Society. I loooooooove the mistress. I want to say to her, "Why are you aiming for this crappy thing called wealth? None of the rich folks are particularly happy." I wish we'd see her family background though..so we could see why she takes being a mistress so seriously. She is kind of like a very desperate Ji Yi who never lost her fascination with wealth and famous people. Her ideas of what is classy and her sudden insights into her life totally make every episode.

It's been finished on Darksmurf for a quite a while, in case the Viki subs end up being substandard. Viki recently acquired A Wife's Credentials, too, but the subs are absolute shit (I hate to say it like that, but it took me so long to realize I had options that I'm still bitter). Anyway, I don't think they were in-house, so just in case Yoo-na's Street is from the same source or there's a jTBC curse or something...just know there's somewhere else to go!

Hi beanies,
Just wanna know!!! is there any Jdrama fans here?? If so i would like to get some dramas recommended which is similar to Nodame Cantabile (Not the Korean one but the Japanese), with so many music and funny scene.
Any language Korean or Japanese it doesn't matter...
Any recommendations????

There's nothing quite like Nodame Cantabile, though I slot that into the "quirky dorama" category, which otherwise includes:
-Kimi wa Petto
-Hana Kimi
-11 Nin mo Iru!
-Love Shuffle
-Date (seems its official English name is now Dating: What's It Like To Be In Love?)
-Fuben na Benriya (just finished airing, definitely not as complex as Nodame Cantabile but it's hilarious)
Mind you, these all cover very different topics (from human pet to gender bender romance to teen pregnancy to get-snowed-in-in-a-nameless-town-where-NOTHING-happens).

Nodame is quite unique jdrama wise,I haven't seen any like it so far but I'd recommend Rich man poor woman, the title is off putting but it's really a great drama. I also liked Date, last cinderella, Nobunaga Concerto, the hours of my life and Alice no toge so far.

I never saw the jdrama version of Nodame Cantabile, but if it's quirky you want I'd also recommend:
Kokoro ga Pokitto ne / Crazy for Me (recently completed)
Neko Zamurai / Samurai Cat, Seasons 1 & 2 (season 2 recently completed)
I agree with alua, Fuben na Benriya / Inconvenient Benriya is very funny! In its own way -- along with the others I mentioned -- it's also poignant.
Thanks for all the other recommendations. Been looking for something to watch, I'll check these out.
On a different jdrama topic, does anyone know where I can find the last 3 eps (8-10) of Ryussei Wagon? Did anyone sub these? Been breaking my heart that I haven't been able to find these anywhere -- I absolutely LOVED this show.

Hello all:
Hope all is well with everyone.
Scholar: Oh wow! I had forgotten about how sexy evil selfish power-mad-vampires could be. This is so perfect for Lee Soo Hyuk whose charisma just breathes cool repressed sex. He has a fearlessness in his acting which makes him put caution and self-protection to the wind. He's all in. And being all in with one's sexiness takes a lotta skill. It's very hard for even an actor to be that naked emotionally. I'm so loving the cheesiness, the world-building, and seeing my two faves be up against each other. I'm hoping the rise of one acting maestro doesn't begin the descent of another. Jun-ki is getting older so... well.. I want him to do well even when he gets too old to be young sexy. I really love that guy and he has his own wonderful sweet charisma.
High Society: I really like it. It's sweet, brainless, and I like the main characters. Barring any unforeseen plot twists (which is pert near impossible because this is one very predictable story) it'll be a sweet hang-out drama to remember.
Oh my ghostess: Am wondering how they will get everyone together or will someone have to die to give us all a happy OTP?
Masked Prosecutor: A drama where the main characters are not the real main characters. Would've been so good if the villains were the main characters in this one. That said, it's okay. I fast forward through a lot but i find myself still watching it.
Mask: Well, well well... ah me... well, well, well. I wish they'd told us why Big Bad Cray Cray necro-obsessed lover (ooh, sorry, that's another coupla dramas) wanted revenge in the first place. Crappy timing, kdrama. This is the second time this season (I'm talking about you Unfortunate Boyfriend) where we find out late in the game why villain is so pissed off at everyone. He and wifey are just so perfect for each other. Has obsessed love ever been more deadly?
My Beautiful Bride: Please do not mess up my hopes. Keep being good...although I see that our wonderful director/cinematographers absolutely love the choreographic beauty of fight scenes.
I remember You: Love Seo In Guk, who looks uncharacteristically nervous and posed and stilted. Not really loving the drma though which is just plain clunky.
I may go back to glancing at Hidden Identity. Will see.
Have a great weekend, all.

No no no, don't even put that thought into my head about LJK! He's definitely one of my favorites. He should have lead roles for a long time yet. Sure he may have to stop taking school boy roles (really, I know he looks young for his age but that needs to stop) but there are still many leads in their 30s - plus he's a guy, the actresses are the ones who struggle the most with leads after a certain age.

Okay ... just finished reading Pride and Prejudice for like the 15th time ... just love that book ...
And we all know that Kdrams are all just a mish-mash of Austen, Bronte, Andersen and a splash of Dickens for good measure.
So that said ... who's your ideal 1st Male Lead? Mr Darcey, My Knightly or Mr Rochester?
Personally, if I were a girl, I'd go for Mr. Knightly .. a strong, smart man who has a keen wit AND the patience to deal with the irrationalities that women bring (sorry ... but it's true).

Absolutely Mr Darcy! Such spirited conversation with Elizabeth, he'd never bore me. Great brother and friend, even bore well the irritating Bingley sisters. As for Wentworth... did not take much action when he could have... wasted too much time. Rochester is dangerous... dark and alluring though, but the kind to throw too much convention to the winds... not too safe to hang around with, nah ah!

Btw the 1995 movie 'Persuasion' is also my fav adaptation of a jane austen book. And hilariously enough, the 2007 version is by far the worst adaptation, it completely missed the point with its changes.

Persuasion and Pride & Prejudice are actually tied for me. I adore both. As much as I love Darcy, I'd say Wentworth is really the goldmine.
But of the choices given I'd go with Mr. Darcy. What I think is interesting is that when I started kdramas, a lot of those guys felt like Mr.Darcy's to me....until I realized that no, they're actually just jerks. Darcy has a moment of rudeness but most of what's thought about him is just based on false gossip or misunderstandings. He's certainly aloof but he's actually a pretty decent guy - extremely loyal to his friends and family. Plus I like some banter and Darcy and Lizzie are about as much banter as you can get from that era.
I've never understood the appeal of Rochester. Be careful, if you start to fall apart in some way he'll just lock you up in a room for the rest of your life!

As a partner, Mr. Knightly all the way. But Rochester has a special place in my heart because aside from the whole wife in the attic fiasco, I loved how Jane took an estimation of his flaws and his good points and loved the whole of him, and he the same. Bronte's prose just sticks with me some kinda way. That, and Rochester reminded me of a guy I knew...

I am fond of Mr. Darcey personally but my husband mocks me for liking Mr. Darcey because he sees Mr. Darcey a bit obsessive and almost stalkish towards Lizzy ( before Lizzy refused his proposal). For me, Colin Firth is Mr. Darcey. Mr. Darcey gives a bad impression at first,, high mighty, he is better than anyone,,,but as he peels of his skin, people discover that he is rather soft, caring and wise.
What I like about P and P is not only about the romance(s) but also the people in the stories, such as Lizzy's mother, Bingly's sisters. Their presence gives more colours to the story. Lizzy's mom is hysterical!

Mr. Knightly deserves the badge of honor, indeed. Emma is by far the siliest and most annoying of Austen's characters.
My Austen man is Captain Wentworth. Constancy!
*lol @museofmanymasks for the " the whole wife in the attic fiasco" referring to Rochester. Granted he's the weirdest of them all, but Bronte Sisters are in general a different case. Less British flair, more passion.

well, I don´t know who the first two are. but I assume they are also 19th century characters?
actually none...cause I found Rochester to be vastly selfish and irrational and not very likable. nothing heroic about whatever he did.
I am more a fan of characters from our own literature, who are no saints, but they are men who don´t step over the heroine and respect her freedom. actually, I feel like they consider the heroine stronger and braver than themselves.

In regards to the leading men of Austen, I think I'll have to go with Mr. Darcy. I think he's just more awkward than anything, which makes him endearing to me. Also, Colin Firth is the definitive Darcy for me, so there's that.
However, my top Austen guy of all would have to be Mr. Bingley. He's such a sweet man despite his faults, and his devotion to Jane is so aww-inducing!

Drama quota dropped to 1 recently because of internet issues so I gladly dropped High Society.
High Society - I really like PHS's styling and acting in this, but IJY overacts to an incredible extent and the fact that the show is full of cliches makes it more justifiable to drop this than the other drama I'm watching which is...
I Remember You - though I heard the official English title is still Hello Monster. I like that the leads are not quite in love yet, and the fact that the drama evokes some really insightful points. My only complaint would be that the second case seems a lot less intricately planned meaning there's no wow when it comes to finding the culprit. But in any case I think this is the best of the currently airing dramas.
Mask - dropped this a while ago. Heard good stuff about it but since I'm not a fan of either of the leads it makes it difficult for me to continue when the makjang meter goes "over".
I'm not sure whether to watch OMG since I'm not a fan of JJS either. I'll probably wait it out and see how. SWWTN is on my to-watch list but I'm not going to pick it up anytime soon. I've heard some reviews that the acting leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm not sure of the accuracy of those comments about the acting in SWWTN, since all the comments in the recaps pretty much say that the acting is decent and even Changmin - the weakest link in the bunch - is actually not bad in his role.
But the background music and random plot holes are another story.

Hi beanies, hope you had a great drama week, I sure did. Most of my week was dedicated to MY HUSBAND GOT A FAMILY which I absolutely loved, I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. Loved all the characters but my favorite has got to be the not so bright son, his thinking was so funny but sad at the same time, I found myself genuinely worried for his future but it worked out great in the end.
MASK still very much in love with it.haven't watched episode 14 yet, the Internet has been slow today but I know it will be good.Could our couple be any cuter?
THE TIME I LOVED YOU I'm in like with it.Hyung...?
Bought A thousand day promise because of Ji sook/Eun Ha ,Last scandal and Ex-girlfriend club Dvds today, still no Misaeng which blows.
Any one watched My daughter seo nyang and house of bluebird would you recommend them,I like the leads in My daughter seo nyang but the dvd that is available is dubbed in a language I don't understand and if I have to bare watching a dubbed series,I need it to be very good.
Non drama topic,
I never understood women's obsession with shoes but today I got it. saw these AMAZING ankle boots but they cost half of my monthly food budget , I'm wondering if I should forsake food and drink porridge for a whole month while wearing my boots. Pray for me because I probably will. And as I write this I realise how grateful I am that my biggest stress is buying boots I can't afford. Peaceful times.

I'm always glad to see a shout out to Last Scandal, one of my Top Ten KDramas! What a great show.
Lots of stores in many countries will accept an offer of a discounted price for something like your boots. You can ask if the sales associate or manager has any flexibility in the price, or if they expect there to be a sale soon and can they let you know about any sale that happens soon because you want these boots but the price is currently just too high for you. Do it discreetly and often even designer stores are happy to take 20% or more off today rather than wait who knows how long for a full price customer and maybe end up getting only 50%. You can even try it over the phone. Good luck!

Hi beanies, happy Friday!!
So, i watched first two episodes of The Time That I Loved You, Scholar, Ghostess and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. At first watching solely because of actor and actress in it (who can resist Shim Changmin in cute moustache like that? Certainly not me). But the whole package sold me off and am on boat! :)
I decide to wait till more episodes are out though. Because ugh, the waiting is such a pure torture (and beside the fact that i will be back to my hometown for two weeks and no decent internet so yeah). I used to watch drama after it ends and went total binge-watching. Total respect for you all beanies who sit week after week, going through all the painful waiting. How did you all do that???
Just finished: Waiting for Love. Better late than never, they said. Regret it big time why i didn't watch this earlier. This drama is so cute and pleasant to watch. Now i know why Im Siwan getting all the attention these days. Those puppy eyes can make you do anything. That i know for sure.

Do you mean non-romantic shows, or just in general? For more light-hearted fun, I've enjoyed "Marriage Not Dating" and "Answer Me 1997." For more thought-provoking and serious fare, "Secret Love Affair," "Joseon X-Files" and "Nine: Nine Time Travels."

"Nine: Nine Time Travels" was great. Another time travel drama that I like is "Faith." I haven't seen the other dramas that you recommended so I will check them out.
A good (long) drama is "Empress Ki." Although there is some romance in it, it's primarily about the female lead's rise to power and all of the scheming that goes on.
I haven't watched too many movies but saw "Miss Granny" and really enjoyed it.

Happy Friday!
I took this government test earlier this week as part of my vocational rehabilitation. Being someone who has been done with school for decades, I realized that my math was a bit rusty. lol I was a champ at reading and spelling though. Must be from all those subtitles. lmao
Currently watching:
Mask = Addictive as hell to watch. A nice hodgepodge of melo, comedy, suspense, makjang and romance. Good cliffhangers.
The Time I've Loved = this reminds me so much of classic rom-coms. Ha Ji Won is just lovely here.
Masked Prosecutor = only watching this to support Kim Sun Ah. It has a nice story but they made the hero a bit too silly. He's supposed to be this bad-ass vigilante ala Healer but he's more like Kick-Ass. lol
I Remember You = unlike the title, I keep forgetting to stay current with the episodes of this drama. lol I don't know. There's something about it that just doesn't hold my attention even though I like both Seo In Guk and Jang Na Ra.
Scholar Who Walks The Night = I don't like sageuk or vampire themed stories but this drama has way too much eye candy to ignore. lol
Oh My Ghostess = I pledge my undying love for Kim Seul Gi.
We Broke Up = A nice light rom-com. Sandara Park is really good at slapstick comedy. At 15 minutes or less per episode, it's an easy watch.
High Society = I am quite behind on this drama. All the side characters are irritating to watch.
Have a nice weekend everyone!

Mask - This show owns my soul. The main couple have become so adorable, even the side characters are continually rolling their eyes. However it's the antagonistic couple that really had me fascinated this time around. They are finally revealing their lies and it's game on to see who will survive. They've had their moments of showing us how human they can be but that doesn't negate all the heartache they've wrought and crimes they committed. I know they will destroy each other in the end but how the fallout comes about is what keeps me coming back. That and Min Woo in love.
Oh My Ghostess - I love the male lead and usually watch anything he does. It is a pleasant surprise to find that two actresses I like are playing the female lead and the ghost. The humor is great so far and I hope the mystery storyline keeps me engaged.
The Time That I've Loved You - I did not think I would like this type of show (normally I don't) but the unrequited love has really hooked me. Or maybe it's the male lead's desperate, tortured expressions and longing glances at the object of his 17-year affection. How can the heart not feel a pang when presented with that?

Hmm, posting replies from my phone tonight seems not to be working.. My replies aren't appearing after the right posts. Oh well.
Watching:
Jang Ok Jang > I hadn't expected to like this, but I tried it just for Yoo Ah-In. First time watching anything with Kim Tae Hee, who seems a little... bland, but could just be the character. Turns out the first few episodes hooked me in cos they're unexpectedly romantic. But since I know how it'll end already, I'm not sure I'll keep watching (I'm on episode 6 or 7). But watching it reminded me of how much I love YAI, so I ended up watching...
Secret Love Affair > again. For the 2nd or 3rd time. I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the acting is so convincing that I root for the OTP in the face of all odds. Just love the whole style of the show.
Gaksital > Finished this 2 weeks ago finally, after multiple cycles of trying then failing to watch past the first 2 or 3 episodes. But I'm glad that though it's taken a year or two, I persevered... I think I was initially averse to the historical time period the story is set in, since Japan's whole expansionist agenda and WWII happen to be my least favorite periods of history. But the drama ended up being pure adrenaline-rush and heroics. It put Kimura Shunji on the map as one of the most well-written villains...or at least one of the ones I felt really empathy for despite really hating his choices. The recaps were such a joy to read, too; can't praise JB and GF enough for their ability to dissect shows so succinctly and draw attention to all the nuances and layers a casual viewer might miss.

Looks like my kdrama quota picked up again....
Scholar Who Walks The Night - *insert Ahn Yo-na-style screaming* OPPAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
I kind of love it right now, the cast is great and doing really well in their roles (and I am having a fierce burst of unnie pride to see Lee Yubi in her first leading role ever, she's doing quite well but I hope public opinion in Korea starts to cut the poor girl a break now) but there are spots where the plotting and story are already sloppy, and it's all being covered by Lee Jun-ki and Lee Soo-hyuk's acting. I love it when they're together, they're a perfectly matched pair when it comes to acting style. And they're both unearthly levels of beautiful. (now if only we had subs for episode 2)
I really hope it doesn't end up sucking.
Oh My Ghostess - It got off to a fantastic start, and I love how female-centric it is. And Park Bo-young/Kim Seul-gi are a perfect pair to cast, PBY in particular nails KSG's mannerisms to a T. Now I want to see them interact more, too.

I think I won't be catching up with the In Time With You remake this weekend though. I got some new books, one about the Battle of Britain (the 75th anniversary of which is today).
The other is about the five British spies who played a pivotal role in tricking the Germans about the D-day plan. They were a real colourful crew, too - it's been a long time since I've bought ink and paper books, but I had gift vouchers for a book shop and ended up using them.

I am also reading books, I want to make a themed tour in the museum about refugees, based on the stories of the 140 000 estonian refugees during WWII and afterwards. so I brought 9 books home before the library goes on vacation.
I agree with you on LSH and Teacher together, I want more scenes with just them. actually why does it have to be a love story? It would probably be more intense as a one-on-one mind-game and battle of wits among the vampires. Although I want to see Kim So Eun, and she had some great chemistry with Teacher. I remember when he posted that KSE came on set and suddenly he feels VERY energetic. hahaa. Don´t remember him having the same reaction to LYB

It's kind of funny with oppa, his chemistry with leading ladies is not always a reflection of how he is with them in real life. Like he and Shin Mina were absolutely sparking off each other every time they had to be in close proximity in Arang and they weren't that close in real life, but he is super tight with Nam Sang-mi and yet their chemistry in Joseon Gunman was lukewarm at best (but really hot in Time Between Dog & Wolf). And he had serious chemistry with Jeon Hye-bin, and nine months later we got a dating rumour between them (yesss oppa and unnie should date!).

oh, and please drama gods, save the Cheese in the Trap adaptation from the ghastliness of having Korea's most wooden It-girl play Hong Seol.
(can we at least try a Han Groo casting? Or Chun Woo-hee? Or anyone who can, you know, act. Product endorsing is not a substitute for being able to emote)

Agreed. Hong Seul is such a complicated character. TvN can do so much better with the offer for the lead female, and it should! Plus, I just want Park Hae-jin to be well-matched.

Happy Friday!!
Currently watching :
Mask
Love this drama so much, especially this few last episodes.. I love all the character development and all the couple, the main and the antagonistic. The main couple moments make me giggle and smile, they show how they slowly developed feelings for each other, it's not instant and I love how they support each other despite some secret between them.. and the antagonistic couple just amaze me, they want to be happy but their ambition and heartache already to deep and even they are kind of evil but there is still indeed a kindness in them..
And with recent episode, the truth are finally revealing.. this drama getting better and better..
Hidden Identity
I like the intensity of this drama, although for me Bad Guys is better than this but hidden identity is also a good action drama.. I love Park Sung-Woong acting as team leader.. IMO Kim Beom act has been out-shined by other actor, his acting is not bad, quite good actually but other just better than him..
I Remember You
This drama is actually really good, the mystery, the story, the chemistry, the actor/actress, the acting are really good.. I just don't understand why the rating is low..
Oh My Ghost
This drama hooked me, the combination between pasta, arang and the magistrate and master's sun.. I love all the character and the lead's (Park Bo-Young, Cho Jung-Seok, Lim Ju-Hwan, Kim Seul-Gi) act are outstandingly good.. I even didn't know which otp that I root for.. really recommend it!!
Scholar Who Walks The Night
Just start to watch the first two episode, first episode is really good pilot yet the second one is kind of okay.. Lee Jun Ki really good in this drama, since I'm not a fan of the idea of vampire drama, especially k-vampire drama before this, are not my drama appetite and tend to be boring and disappointing, Lee Jun Ki is the only reason I gave this drama a try..
The Time I Loved You/The Time We Were Not In Love
I am thinking to drop this drama, I actually love the main and second lead (Ha Ji-Won, Lee Jin-Wook and Yoon Gyun-Sang) but the story is just too boring for me.. It is too obvious that they like each other but they drag the story which IMO just ridiculous..

I haven't had so many dramas I've wanted to watch at one time until now! *____*
Been watching: Hidden Identity, The Time I’ve Loved You = Still enjoying both.
Procrastinating on finishing The Producers. Ugh, I'm like on EP 1O. Losing interest, but I want to wrap it up eventually.
Just started Scholar Who Walks the Night. Couldn't wait! I've only seen the first episode, but I'm pleased with it. Glad to see Lee Jun Ki back.
Also started My Beautiful Bride due to the rave reviews in here. Finished first episode. Anticipating a marathon of this show.
Still want to start Oh My Ghostess.... OTL

Forgotten Dramas that are really good!
Midnight Diner
I Order For You
Late Night Restaurant (Midnight Diner).
All much better than I expected. Two of them are short - 30 minutes.
Couple others I would like to try but cannot find subbed are Yumi's Room and Flower of the Queen.

Are you referring to the Japanese "Midnight Diner" series? I don't think it is "forgotten" at all? Boxed DVD versions of it were all over HK the last I visited.

The Genius - Sangmin is just too awesome! Without him, it'd be boring. Heh. The others shouldn't be teaming up with him. They should be against him and break the major alliance esp. Sangmin-Kyungran. It's not an alliance like with the 2-mins and they're not as good with strategies but they're monsters at MM's. It's weird that they trust each other(or at least she does) but I root for them anyway. Isn't Kong a bit overrated? I adore him and he was awesome with the Open Pass game. But IMO it's just as awesome to see Sangmin guess the zombies in the zombie game in 5 minutes or him winning 9 MM's in a row or Kim Gura in the Election Game. I mean there were a lot of good moments in each season. Really. There's even the dice game. Poor Sangmin, there were only 5 mins. left but Hongchul ruined it anyway. Lol. I think it's just how we saw them. Like how Jinho seemed like losing then dumdumdum ~ a reversal. The editing does wonders. Just that.
Puberty Medley - Ack. Why did I watch this?? T.T. On a rainy day too. This was awesome. Except for that rain scene. Would it have killed them to show Ayoung? Sigh. I need an extension. Oh right. There's MLED. LOL. And to top it all, Baek Sunghyun's here too. Hah. Speaking of BSH, he has a knack for getting the younger/older counterpart lead roles in first-love romances. Lol. I adore him but it was a bit weird that only Jungwoo changed and all. I still love this special though. What am I supposed to do now?
Middle School Student A - Kwak Dongyeon!! I absolute adore this kid! I hope he gets more (lead) roles. I like how they handled the problems and how they wrapped it up. And they only had one hour. One hour!
The Reason I'm Getting Married - I've been watching drama specials. Haha. I just love me some glimpse of reality sometimes. Heh.
What's Up? - 14 eps in. I'm too scared of going forward. I've heard horror stories about the ending. And I'm not sure I want to see it with my own eyes *cough*I still can't click the last ep of WAY*cough*. I so love the cast tho. Im Joo Hwan! Im Joo Eun! Jo Jungseok! Daesung! And Kim Jiwon! I still can't believe that's Jiwon lol. I'm thinking of watching OMG for Joohwan and Jungseok but it'll be hard to forget Byeong Gun.
There's no such thing as a happy weekend when you have school on a Saturday!

I agree so much with you for about Sangmin! He's brilliant and the show would be a lot less fun without him. I'm definitely rooting for him and Kyungran even though Jinho/Yoohyun/Hyunmin are my favorites. Sangmin and Kyungran had the ultimate trust going all the way back from Season 1 so I'm sure there's no stopping them this time from going to the finals. Jinho doesn't seem as good as he was in Season 1 but I'm guessing it's because he's up against the best players, especially Dongmin and Sangmin who keeps absorbing experience and intuition like a sponge.
P.S: Heard a rumor that Jinho might be ... soon
