Producers writer, Master’s Sun PD team up for new SBS drama

After just wrapping on the KBS variety showbiz drama The Producers, it’s been announced that star writer Park Ji-eun will be heading back to SBS for her next project, where she had her last mega-hit You From Another Star in 2013-14. Over at SBS, she’ll be re-teaming with PD Jin Hyuk, of Doctor Stranger and the Hong sisters drama Master’s Sun. So, that means we can count on Gong Hyo-jin to headline, yeah?

The as-yet-unnamed project has no story, stars, or even genre locked down, but I’m hoping for a supernatural mashup between You From Another Star and Master’s Sun — something fresh and stylish and funny. Park Ji-eun and Jin Hyuk have worked together before, back in 2007 on the Uhm Jung-hwa rom-com Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung. She was a junior writer on that show, and then broke out with weekend hits Queen of Housewives, Queen of Reversals, and You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly. She followed those up with You From Another Star, solidifying her star writer status.

PD Jin Hyuk’s record has had more ups and downs — there’s just no arguing that Doctor Stranger is anything but crazy, even though the majority of that blame falls on the writing. But ghosty-thrills romantic comedy Master’s Sun was stylish and beautiful, and City Hunter before that was a really smartly directed action suspense drama. I’m really looking forward to the partnership, since I’d pretty much watch anything from either of them… unless it’s about North Korean spy-doctors. I draw the line at that.

The new drama is being planned for a 2016 broadcast on SBS. Great, wake me when it’s next year.

Producers was so boring tbh. KSH character talked too much lol. Though I like how she ended thing beautifully. It was such a nice ending. WHile Who are you started beautifully but ended with such a mess. I guess that's the difference with veteran writer and newbie.

Sometimes I wonder which one better, fun drama with bad ending or boring drama with good ending.

A good ending is definitely more important. No matter how good a show is, when the ending is so bad, you'd want to forget the whole thing and feel like all your time spent watching is wasted.

Producers may be a bit slow and draggy at times, but I enjoyed it a lot bcos of the casts. The last 2 episodes are fantastic and like what you said, the ending is beautiful. Thus, I love it :)

definitely the second. Bad endings can sour the entire experience of watching a drama, bad beginnings can at least be overcome.

A bad ending will hunt u forever and for sure most of the time even if u loved the drama will not watch it again or remember only the bad ending....Hate it when they ruin a good drama in the last episode...
I liked Producers and the characters,i found KSH character quite fun actually even more when he was getting his petty revenge

The worst thing a good drama can do is have a bad ending. I am still stinging from Prime Minister and I. lol That drama was so much fun to watch but ended so badly.

Oh My gosh! That show... The ending killed me. You're right, it felt like we went back to square 1. It was getting better and then the ending happened. Ugh. It had potential to be so heartwarming but no, it left me mostly scratching my head.

Well, if its boring, you'll probably end up dropping it anyway. So not too much time wasted. But if its good and then the ending is crap, you're just like, "20 hours of my life wasted...okay yep. I quit dramas forever."

Wholeheartedly disagree - the writing/dialogue in "The Producers" was really well done.

Only major fault was KSH's character continuing his one-sided love/crush on GHJ's character for too long.

Overall, much better than YFAS and much better than anything that the other "star" writer has ever written.

Wow, she's really productive. She's okay, I appreciate how Producers did not include any murder, birth secrets, twins, and other outrageous K-drama troops although I still think it could be much much better. I like the PD's works (even the directing of DS since the writing's a hot mess). But please, no more KSH. No hate on him, I just want fresh faces & combination of leads.

I can only imagine the amount of sizzle they would bring to the screen if they were paired up as a couple. And also maybe throw kim jae wook in the mix(and you have yourself one of the best k-drama love triangles.

I think she didn't have total control in Producers because it was such a big scale project. I didn't like the loveline route but there was just that much you could do on national broadcast. Other than that, I enjoyed everything else - the cast, the characters, their dialogues, and especially Cindy.

This new project seems exciting. Looking forward to it.

Cindy was the best thing for me in PRODUCERS but her character was not well written. In fact, the drama was just bland and felt like it was a waste of good cast. I preferred the development between Seung Chan & Cindy and hated Seung Chan & Ye Jin. It felt forced and a waste of time... Seung Chan was poorly written as well and underdeveloped as well. It was weird. I found myself annoyed by him but the focus of the storyline revolved around him for the most part. (sigh)

I wanted to see more development with Cindy on the show that they did but that felt a bit incomplete in the end. The drama just didn't feel like a full circle. It was just messy... thankfully, I fwd through most of it which made it decent.

Required fields are marked *

I personally think that Cindy was a very well written character, rare of a kind. She's the fictional top-star that I adore the most right now. She had the best arc and everything about her was explained convincingly. I loved her layers and IU's nuances in portraying her.

Seung-chan annoyed me big time at some point but it was fine again in last episode. I suppose as long as Cindy is happy, I'm happy. As I said, I didn't like how the drama dragged out the lovelines, but at the same time I understand why they did the way they did. It was a reckless move to experiment something like this, since this is national broadcast and it's not like there are as many people working in broadcast stations as those who work in general offices to have the same sentiment toward Misaeng - the things they deal with are different, or should I say the things they decided to portray are different. So I have come to accept that although they could have made the pairs better to develop both characters and storylines, they chose the best solution they could deal with from their point. I was okay with Seung-chan not changing so much, since I loved his earnest and apparently he shook up other people's worlds and be the catalyst for them to change for the better. He was young and he needed to experience more to grow up. The only character I saw as underdeveloped was Joon-mo; the 'proposal' was cute and I liked his small acts of caring, but it certainly could have built up more. Even Ye-jin, at first I didn't like her much, especially the time when she badmouthed Cindy to try to get Joon-mo and Seung-chan to her side, but then gradually she turned to be (or exposed to be under Seung-chan's influence) such a lovely person under the spiky cover.

I watched it live, then read recaps, and watched it again with subs, plus read discussions, so I noticed things as much as I could and actually liked everything it delivered. Again, not so much with the draggy lovelines of course, but I loved how they spoke and interacted with each other, especially the beautiful moments and meaningful conversations between Seung-chan and Cindy, the time when our four leads being at Joon-mo's place, and the heart-warming things they did for each other. I loved the dynamic and chemistry in this drama, and all the little things it had. Once in a while, I would actually chose to watch some parts again.

I agree, they had some interesting conversation and I really did enjoy the conversations and interactions between Seung Chan and Cindy. I was most excited when they were in the same room together.

In fact, I want them to do a sequel but be it like 2-3 years later. But I want more progress between Seung Chan as the producer and Cindy trying to keep her shining star bright in the competitive world except she has been branching the acting world. lol

PD Jin Hyuk really isn't to blame for his last drama - if anything, his direction enhanced what little watchability it had. And he is a master of milking costar chemistry, OTP or not - Master's Sun is excellent proof of that (the number of times I've wished he was the PD of Warm & Cozy, too.....).

And if we're going to see repeat castings from their last projects, how about So Ji-sub and Jun Ji-hyun? Even if JJH in a drama is totally wishful thinking.

Either that, or surprise us with new talent that hasn't made it to prime time drama lead yet. I'd love to see Yoon Doo-joon at it...

Lee Jonk Suk-Gong Hyo Jin

There's also these possibilities (since KSH's lead classification is slightly ambiguous):

Cha Tae-hyun - Jun Ji-hyun (reunion! <3)
So Ji-sub- Gong Hyo-jin (reunion!!! <33333)
Lee Jong-seok - IU
Seo In-gook - Kang Sora
So Ji-sub - IU (she really looks too young)
So Ji-sub - Kang Sora
Park Hae-jin - Kang Sora (oh wait.....but they deserve better than what they got the first time)

(my personal favourite is my option 2 but I can live with any of the above pairings except your last 2. NO to seeing her on any broadcast drama as lead!)

Omo the possibility of no 1 is too tempting.... I doubt JJH will be back that soon, plus CTH got movie this year. SJS-KSR is a fresh pairing I'dlove to see! KSR needs a good drama she really deserves, and it's about time SJS graces the small screen. Their chemistry with costar is good.

I hope the script writers more creative to use so many theme/ topics in our surrounding and create fresh stories about them. Being honest, I'm getting bored with the same pattern of korean dramas again and again.

Script writers tends to make their characters as doctor, CEO, lawyer, singer etc. But no one wants to really write deeply about those job as the main story. Especially the dark side of those high profile jobs. It needs more research but I'm sure it will be such a good story and give knowledge to the viewers.

What I like the most about her work is when you really have a sense of family/community between the characters. Not just the main ones but all of them which is fantastic because even if she has some flaws, the writer isn't one to forget how to make a side character shine :) In Producers, there were so much heartwarming and emotional moments that I just can't talk about it without having this urge to watch the drama all over again, haha.

I love this writer so damn much. She's fantastic and her humour is intelligent, witty and complete opposite of the slap-stick most other writers rely on. I think Producers is hands down the best drama of the year for me and nothing even comes remotely close. Of course, YFAS is incomparable. I'm tempted to see her other long dramas - that's how good she is to me.

I hope they court someone I love or at least like. Kim Soo-hyun would be too good to come true, specially when he has a movie lined up. Unless they're ready to wait since KSH-PJE's team up is way too awesome. But if not, they can just reteam for his drama comeback post military lol. For this, if not Soo-hyun, someone talented and charismatic please!

I liked Producer too. People complained that they focused too much on Seungchan-Yejin even though they weren't endgame, but to me it was refreshing that they focused on a one-sided crush/love of the lead and have them not end up together, not getting the person doesn't mean everything was a waste and Seungchan moved on in the end like a normal person would. I like Park Jieun's writing and her simple take on things. Looking forward to her future work.

Required fields are marked *

The extensive focus on Seung-chan and Ye-jin and them not ending up together is probably one of the things I loved most in Producers. For a drama that claimed to be realistic, it was exactly that. Realistic.

One sided crush/love happens all the time. It's not about the happily ever after but what the character learned from those experiences and how it changed him and how he viewed life. I loved that Seung-chan was able to mature and take his 'defeat' as a stepping stone to bigger and better things in life. Mostly, I love that he never looked bitterly upon Ye-jin's rejection and their happy memory, instead he had a smile on his face as he walked by 'their' park. That's too awesome. Producer is no fairytale like YFAS was. It's just so impressive that it's from the same writer because I thought both dramas were phenomenal.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

The problem was that it dragged on for too long (should have ended that around ep 8-9) - like SC couldn't get it thru his head that YJ didn't and wouldn't see him in that way.

Nonetheless, the writer is really adept at realistic dialogue and putting in humor that's actually funny (and not silly, forced humor that so many other writers tend to do).

Required fields are marked *

It's most definitely not the best drama of the year - that crown goes to the awesome and fabulously written Heard It Through the Grapevine. Producer started off wanting to be different (which in KBS, means Misaeng-lite), but it ultimately went back to its network tv drama roots and just became a romcom with an extra dose of workplace setting, which may not have been revolutionary but was certainly entertaining for the most part.

And I'm with bd5, I really started getting annoyed with the drama for jerking its viewers around, Answer Me-style. No matter how you slice it, that is what they did - there were even articles where the production admitted to looking at viewer ratings to decide the love lines.

But thankfully, good sense prevailed and PJE wrote an excellent ending, which makes me far more inclined to forgive the faults along the way.

I don't know what you mean by jerking the viewers around because it was always obvious to me from the start that Yejin and Joonmo were going to end up together, Yejin never showed any signs of romantic attraction towards Seungchan whatsoever and she never wavered even after finding out Seungchan liked her. She loved Joonmo from start to finish, I felt they made all that pretty obvious. Despite that, the show focused on Seungchan's one-sided love for Yejin even though we knew they weren't endgame and I loved that spin. For some reason, some kdrama viewers think that if two people don't end up together then everything they did together and their time spent together was meaningless, but I disagree. So in that mindset, I didn't feel jerked around regarding their relationships because I always saw Producer as an earnest and sweet unrequited love story from the lead, which we don't often usually see in kdramas.

"here were even articles where the production admitted to looking at viewer ratings to decide the love lines."

Can you link me to the article? I'd like to see if it was really the producer/director/writer of the show that said this or just bad journalism and people assuming.

I thought the producer had a great and fresh concept. which i always appreciate in kdramaland. its nice to see a change from time to time. and its one of those drama that you either like it or not. also for someone who is also a kpop fan and kvariety addict like my self (on top of kdrama ofcourse), producer has certainly manage to highlight all the dramatic bts and quirkiness that surrounds kentertainment industry.

so very looking forward for the writers next work. hopefully to again deliver something as different as producer!

Sun and Stars: You're Not the Master of Me.

A story that challenges the force of fate in the lives of our genius/chaebol/poor/sassy cinderella cast of characters including flower manboys with choco abs & honey thighs (still have no idea what this really means), s-line girlwomen characters that inexplicably tolerate the inevitable wrist grabs and have mastered aegyo.

I'm a huge fan of GHJ's but I hope she isn't offered this; she's been working non-stop since her accident and starts movie filming soon. Plus I feel too much of her will start to annoy audiences lol.

Some fresh faces should be given a chance but they may not take the risk with that.

SJS -SMA & SJS-JJH sounds amazing

I would like a pairing of So Ji Sub and Jun Ji Hyun too but JJH is a goddess who only comes to dramaland once in 14 years......by that standard we have to wait another 12 years to see her in dramas.

I vote for a second time pairing of Lee Jong Suk and Kang Sora, at least she deserves to be in a better drama than Warm & Cozy.

Shin Min Ah with either So Ji Sub or Won Bin sounds perfect to me.(Drama Gods make it happen !) I've always wanted to see her work with these two in an actual project as opposed to just CF's and photo-shoots.

Jun ji hyun in another drama is impossible to happen. If i were her i will not do another drama after ywcfts her cheon song yi character is unmatched i doubt any character can surpass that level. I want moon chae won to cast on this i miss seeing her in drama.she is a good actress she deserved to be recognize more.

Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won plssssss!!!

Or Kang Dong Won and Ha Ji Won (sizzlingly chemistry in the duelist..but almost a zero percent for this to happen)!

gongvley and hyun bin...<3
or a reunion of ms. gong and jang hyuk:)

ms. gong really captivates me.,,,love her every work. want to see her again,,tho she is really working nonstop...nonetheless, it doesn't bother me that much.

wish to see her on another headline for a drama with a great writer...

I really like,KSH.But couldn't bring myself to watch him in his dorky self.I just didn't want the powerful alien character to be replaced by this dorky self.
I dropped producers after the first episode.
now I am watching high society and though Sung joon is playing the part Convincingly,I can't help but wish KSH was offered anf accepted this part.sigh

I wish joo won would do this show. He's already doing a sbs drama now but this is set to release in 2016 and I somehow want him to work in it. I just finished watching and bridal mask and marathoned all his dramas. what a brilliant actor.and I want moon chae won with him again. good doctor reunion all the way:D

P.s. am I the only one who noticed nobody suggested lee min ho's name foe this drama? don't get me wrong I loke him but it feels like he's loosing his popularity among us international fans. he needs to be in a drama soon too.
