Hello, Beanies!

I was on vacation last week so I haven't watched very many dramas. We went to Myrtle Beach and Pawley's Island (which is SUCH a cute place!) and then stopped at the Great Smoky Mountains and then Mammoth Cave on our way back to Chicago. Both places are so beautiful in totally different ways. I've been to the Smokies before and enjoyed it just as much as when I was in elementary school, haha. Back then I saw a bear cub but this time I didn't see any bears, boo!

Anyway, on to dramas...

Who Are You-School 2015: I actually just started this one, I'm only 4 episodes in. I know some of the stuff that happens already but I'm enjoying it. I know many were disappointed by the ending but I'm going in with an open mind.

The Producers: Still enjoying it and I just love all four main characters so much. I can't believe we only have two episodes left. I don't think this will go down as one of my absolute favorites but I'm enjoying it while I watch it and that's what is important to me. I did like it a bit more in the beginning, though. It was more unique.

Let's see how much of School I can watch before next week!

What a great vacation. The Smokey Mtns are indeed beautiful. I'm glad you didn't see a bear. We have them here and they are a terrible nuisance because they are habituated to humans. Better a bear never see a human.

In Illinois the animals that cause the most nuisance are probably coyotes! Otherwise we're pretty lucky, the only animals I really see other than squirrels, bunnies, etc. are deer.

And yesterday I saved a baby bunny from our window well. It was so hard getting him, though. Eventually I put a bucket down on its side and kind of had to scare him into it, poor little guy. The moment I put the bucket down in the grass he hopped out and bounded away. He was so cute!

The only reason I noticed him was because my cat was watching him from the window!

About School 2015 - Just don't expect much from the mystery. Don't fall in love with the second lead. Don't really like the secondary characters. Be prepared for a bad ending. You won't be disappointed :)

Haha, that's basically what I've heard. Ah well, I need another drama to watch and there aren't very many good picks from the recent/currently airing ones.

Sungjae really is good in it, but I like the main male lead well enough so far that I don't think I'll be TERRIBLY heartbroken.

Happy OT beanies.. :-)

-CRIME SCENE S2: It's interesting that there is another murder case inside this week case. But for me, that almost like a prove that Hani is not the criminal. For someone who had to go through all that trouble for the past 15 years, it's just incomprehensible if she was about to do that all over again. And it's a nice twist to have the body missing, since the missing body and his belonging is a big clue for this case.

-PUNCH: Already on the 10th eps and what a great drama this one is. I was a little taken aback by Junghwan's characterization in the early eps. Surely they won't depict their hero as a ruthless and cunning person, right? But as story unfold, it's amazing that I still care enough (and eventually root) for him, a character that I usually hate at the very first sight. But now that I can see him as a better person, I just want him to get his happy ending. Please show, let him take down all the baddies. Because when a realistic drama like Punch tell you their lead man has terminal illness, you just know they won't pull miracle as a life-saving at the eleventh hour.

-EX GIRLFRIEND CLUB: I love it that what matters in this drama is all the characters and their relationships with each other. Because while the plot itself is somewhat bizarre, they are just person who wanted to be loved, whom we might met once in our life. And how much I love their BGM. It is so good and definitely in tune with this drama's quirkiness. A nice, fun, breezy, and easy-to-watch drama that really end well.

-MASK: This is the Mask that I love. The humor and some of the craziness is back, we get to see Jisook being smart and brave again, and look at all that blossoming love. I was just a little dissappointed that Minwoo is still in the dark about his wife identity. It would be much more fun to see Minwoo and Jisook being ally after he knows everything.

Yup, next week will be really interesting. And just like what they all said, when they play as themself, the only person whose personality make sense as a murderer is Jang Dongmin. It will be fun watching him try to direct their suspicion toward other player.

Yay another Punch watcher! One thing that irritated me throughout the show was the dramatic music that seemed to turn up in every other scene. But what I do love is Kim Rae-won and his portrayal of Jung-hwan. It's amazing how the story causes his character to turn and our perspective of him to change so much as well.

But the great thing about the show is also that it's hard to tell between black and white. Everything and everyone is grey. Everyone has done something evil.

Happy Friday Beanies! I'm still a bit in jaded phase with my kdrama watching so I've fallen a bit behind. I'm sure I'll catch up eventually but I'm not feeling very motivated.

School 2015 Well, it's done. The ending wasn't terribly surprising but I'm still left with a rather hollow feeling. After the "big" reveal over Soo-In's death, everything seemed to go downhill for me. In general I still feel like kdramas have trouble with their third acts and this show was no exception. Strong start but lackluster finish.

Hidden Identity Only one episode in but so far so good. It's very action-filled which suits summer well and I'm enjoying how it's shot. It's to early to really know much but I like the cast and this is still full of potential. Bummie <3 I look forward to seeing where this goes.

Prince’s Prince Almost done. Web shorts are always a bit rushed but this one especially feels like we jump from scene to scene and miss things. What I am having fun with it watching the episodes raw and seeing how much I understand before the subs come in. For someone who hasn't studied Korean I feel like doing pretty well (but also I realize his many phrases are overused in kdramas lol).

Orange Marmalade I'm enjoying the sageuk portion! However, like the modern portion, I'm afraid that there is too much ground to cover in just two more episodes and that it's going to become a rushed mess again.

-----
I realized that in the last year I've seen three different shows with AOA members (Prince's Prince, Orange Marmalade, and Modern Farmer). I'm not really that familiar with them but I noticed they had promos out and then I realized how many of them I recognized.

My Korean friend sent me a goodie box that they tried to deliver yesterday but I wasn't home and they didn't leave it. I had her send me an album I wanted but she says I'll be surprised by all the other goodies in there - I'm so excited!! But the postal system is such a pain here so we will see when I get it.

I tried to watch the first episode of Hidden Identity, and strangely, I got some Heartless City vibe with all the undercover cops. (And it's kind of traumatizing since the story become a mess in the later eps). But I hope, really hope this one will be much, much better.

I haven't seen Heartless City so I can't compare. I enjoy undercover cop stories though....but it is hard to be original. I'm also partially watching because I really enjoyed a lot of 'Bad Guys' (the plot sort of got ridiculous but there were other good thigns to make up for it). So far it's good but I'm waiting to see what will make this show unique.

I fought against Mask, tooth and nail, but now I'm hooked! I binged on Mask yesterday; admittedly, fast-forwarding through some scenes. Now, I kinda wished I would have waited until the series ended so I'd know what happened because anticipating the next episode is killer.

Mask is makjang and a half, nevertheless, it's a really good watch. My heart just breaks for Min Woo! While I've watched enough dramas to know it won't happen, I still hope that Ji-Sook/Eun Ha will reveal everything to Min Woo and they'll join forces to take down Seok-Hoon. I know that's just idealistic and I'm sitting myself up for heartbreak but a girl still has to have hope.

Full disclosure: I dropped Producers. (I know, I know) I got behind on some episodes and haven't had the desire to pick it up yet.

Hello! Long time lurker, first time posting on Open Thread.

The Producers - Skipped last episode and just read recap. Depending on episode 11's recap, may do the same! Cindy is the only character I'm not frustrated with at this point. Sad that this show has been reduced to primarily a love triangle/square, I really liked the earlier episodes focusing on the variety world.

Warm & Cozy - I'm probably one of the few who really still likes and looks forward to this show. This week's episodes were good, yay for Gun Woo getting his head out of his rear for the most part. The actors are really selling it and have great chemistry.

High Society - I'm not sure why, but I'm strangely drawn to this one. The second lead couple is super cute comic relief, and I actually don't mind UEE's character falling so fast. It makes sense as she's pretty naive and has had so little affection. On a completely shallow level, I just really like looking at Sung Joon. That water fight scene was adorable.

Moon Embracing the Sun - An oldie but I just started watching it. Love the kid actors! Heard it goes a bit downhill with the adults, but I'm enjoying it so far :)

Happy Friday everyone!!

I had forgotten about the water fight scene. That was pure fan service. It didn't really make sense for grown men to have a water fight like that. Made them look much younger than they are.

I like WC a lot too! I hope the mystery part does not become a mess like in other Hong Sisters dramas. I love how they were brave enough to write such a childish male lead and the way he was so much into power games. :) I like how their heroines always have this quirky sense of humor. The older couple is usually nice too, the evil female second lead is a boring trope but was necessary for this story. The flat male second lead was very cliche too but I ignore it because I like the actor. It's really not that bad as people make it to be, they cared too much about not having a likeable hero. :)

I agree! He seems pretty realistic to me. Petty and spoiled, but also lonely with low self-worth.
The second leads are basically plot points, but I do think the mayor is better than some of the other Hong Sisters second leads. Hoping the mystery/angst doesn't get too terrible!

Hi Jipsy,

I'm watching the same current kdramas and find myself going along for the ride, even though there aren't many thrills. In a way I hope Warm & Cozy gets a little messy just to shake things up. Isn't it always (almost always) the parents who were jerks to their kids and leave behind a mess, only to have it catch up to everyone later when the kids are grown and the parents show up out of selfish guilt, or worse - selfish gain. I want to scream dor them to just stay away, like they have all these years, but then if they did, it wouldn't be a Kdrama, would it?

I really like the dry, often double entendre humor in The Producers. It is very clever and well delivered.

Orang Marmalade and Prince's Prince are both stories I don't feel I have to make sense of in my head, just watching the pretty and vegging ~

I watch scads of K-variety and came across one that is just a NO! called Match Made In Heqven which, I guess, is a redo of an old kvariety show. Our Kang Joon and Julian were on it, boys - please pick better shows to be on, will ya?

Gave a great weekend!

School's over finally. No seriously: Thank you very much, DB team, for your collective effort of writing fantastic recaps about a less than fantastic show. I sincerely enjoyed that (much more than watching the drama).

High Society: Like "School", the show struggled a little bit with the setup (and like so many tvN shows, it also suffers from Disney marketing). I think the actual drama will start next week, and I'm kind of looking forward to it.

Mask I picked that up after so many positive comments all over the place. The pilot two episodes were a great example of dishonest story-telling and how that might work to create a hook for a show. I'm a bit surprised after the first 6 episodes though: The writer not only managed to avoid any original ideas so far -- which is quite a feat, but not unheard of; even more impressively, the story is assembled from the most obvious choices almost all the time.
Unfortunately that creates a lot of boredom, because there is exactly zero excitement left for me. It's made worse by the very pretentious directing that reminded me of that awful "Heirs" stuff.

So, I guess you don't like Mask? I was thinking that it is more of a farce, since it uses so many cliches.

It also reminds me of an American soap opera, with all the crazy two-character scenes. Not that I watch any now, but I did watch General Hospital for a while about 20 years ago.

0

Required fields are marked *

Well, I actually thought it was supposed to be a farce after the first couple of episodes.
But after that, it started to take itself much more serious without dropping the trashy writing approach. Which is very boring to watch for me, as there is still zero plot and no more situational attraction.
It still has a ridiculously stupid and campy villain though, who is really hilariously funny.

Compared to the villain, I thought the heroine is even more stupid. I hope the writers will give her some backbones soon.

Well, the "heroine" ... let's not mention her, okay? (Seriously, I think Park Soo-ae is miscast as this kind of empty character.)

In fact, the sum of the IQ of all characters in this show combined might still struggle to make it into triple digits.

Heave you watched ep 7 yet? I seldom laughed so much with any romcom as I did with the 7th ep of Mask. :) You have to really enjoy it as farce or comedy and you have to be interested in the characters, otherwise it won't work. Loan sharks that won't accept to get paid, evil schemes that don't make any sense, this is not a show where the plot will make you come back. :)

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

No, I haven't. Because I'm skipping 50% of the scenes right now (because many are just redundant and dragging), I can catch up rather quickly if I choose to though.

After episode 2, I cannot enjoy it as a farce anymore, because there is no spark in it. As for characters, well, what characters?

Some of the stereotypes or weird conceptions are funny the first time, but I don't care about them after the fifth repetition for some reason.

The campy villain who has nobody to play with is the only thing that makes me laugh constantly.

If you like realistic depiction of real situation, try to watch Golden Cross. Up to episode 10 approximately, -apart from some obligatory drama elements-, it was a disturbing similar reference to economical crisis, IMF, banks and how the rich become richer.

I also am giving High Society a wide berth for landing on its feet, given the tired chaebol/poor girl trope. But somehow it is keeping my attention and I actually like the leads.

And, I marathoned the 6 eps of Mask and have to say I do not get the love for it.

So, with some spare time and a hole in my Kdrama heart from Grapevine being gone, I decided to rewatch Secret Garden.

If Mask isn't working out for you, might I suggest you try Resurrection? It's an older show, but that translates to "better" show with depressing frequency these days anyway, and it's certainly no exception--it's probably in my top ten. It has dopplegangers and scheming and revenge, too, but none of the clichés you'd expect to find in one of these things. And the directing is excellent (as is the writing and acting).

Hi and Happy Weekend Everyone,
It's been a busy week and with more than one good show to watch, time has become scarce.

Mask – This show is still the best of the lot to me. All parts of it are good and consistent. We're getting more human relationships and little reveals that help with a better understanding of some motivation(s).

[I'm writing this cryptically so that spoilers are minimal] The setup where 2 lonely people, at the mercy of those just beside them are thrown together and start to build trust in and depend on each other and reveal this to each other is going apace....so I'm extremely happy.

There is still tension and suspense but not as much as before and now they seem to come from other quarters and not just from one person. It's been interesting seeing that our main baddie has so much to contend with himself.

What this show continues to do well is to interject humor and human-ness in a story of desperation and inhumane machinations, so that I find myself giggling one moment and worried in the next.

With interesting cliff hangers this show has taken a good grip on me and I find myself even prepared to watch the raw, while waiting for the subs.

High Society - A very interesting watch. I don't really know how to describe how I feel about this story, but interest is the least of descriptions I could use. I've been repeatedly saying that I'm intrigued. The characters are both over the top in some ways, yet completely plausible and human, complex and contradictory, hypocrites yet not evil or mean, arrogant yet lovable. The plot is coming along and still has room to manoeuvre so that it can go in more than one direction.

Masked Prosecutor - Since this show is not subbed all that soon, I have yet to watch the last 2 episodes, but it's coming along OK and rewarding my trust in it. The story is pulling together well so we know where each person is coming from. The interest lies now in how the bad guys are to be taken down, how our Masked one keeps his secret identity or reveals it, how he reconciles his belief in justice with his 'family' and how our couple properly get together. It's been taking quite a time happening, but at least it's not been a frustrating push and pull.

Warm and Cozy - I stopped watching this until the last recap made it sound safe to try one Episode. When I say safe, I mean, when it will not frustrate me too much. I've gone past the time when I can sit through romances where no progress is made over episodes and the coupling is frustrated for no good reason. All I can say about Episode 12 is that it was not bad but still did not go far enough in the couple warmth and coziness for me. :)

My Love Eun Dong - I'm beginning to worry that this going to be a very long haul of not much progress in the romance and lots of tears and guilt. I'm still on the fence about whether to continue or not. I may give it another episode or two to see how it...

.... I may give it another episode or two to see how it goes.

Orange Marmalade - At times sweet and at times frustrating. The modernt times went through a lot so quicikly but the sageuk is taking it so leisurely that I'm wondering how much explanation of the relations between vampires and humans will be covered. We seem to be stuck on the young people's getting to know each other at the moment. Perhaps 12 episodes are too few for the many things that I'd like explained and resolved - I'm thinking of Jae Min's relationship with his mum, Shi Hoo's fate, how Teacher Han Yoon Jae changes, Jae Min's growth if any, whether it's going to be Romeo and Juliet or a happy ending.

Hey @Chesens! Great! ... catch you again on the Healer thread or here! :)

so I started watching Three Meals-Jongsun, well, I watched the Ji Sung episode. Ha, the KMHM music when he arrives! Perfect, and my favorite tune from it - was it Freak? I miss Yo Na and Se Gi... and I was grinning like an idiot. it made me so happy to watch that.

then I got into trouble at work cause someone complained about a joke or few I made on Facebook so I had to take them down and apologize, familiar business much (though even my boss was laughing, but she said best to avoid any fuss ) oh well. 70 people understand humor, 1 doesn´t what can I do. sounds familiar?
(but at least a movie critic, a famous writer and Folklore Archives manager liked my jokes. Enough for me. not like I will stop making jokes because of one person.)

then I got punished for my jokes by going to the dentist. ask nothing.

and I got this idea when someone mentioned how many places there are that inspire different stories. I remembered how mysterious Viljandi has always been and put down some eerie stories from childhood, about ghosts, cemetary, drowned man, monsters, Moon Man, a ball of lightning, leeches, dreams, shadows that chase you when you chase them etc. not TOO scary, but pleasently creepy I think.

I watched a little of Mask, but all the mistakes annoy me so. there are some that are just sloppy production and camera angle and directing, some logic fails, some nonsensical reactions by supporting actors etc. there is like a gap between intention and execution, and it becomes bothersome. But I do love Park Jung Geum in this drama, she is still an evil mom, but maybe a bit different - there is frustration, boredom, anxiety. but at long last they dress her like a woman, not a circus poodle. now was it that hard? that black dress when she was at the bar with that boring b****, I wish I looked like that at my older age.

then, many people praised My Love Eun Dong. I loved the first bit, hated the Viki comments how it is so creepy to like someone so much younger oh cmon. Never been a kid? 17 is still a kid. pretty much all people need to reach at least the age of 24 to stop being kids but for some it never happens. that Jr guy did a really great job!

then they switched the actor, you get almost used to him, they switch again. I thought I wouldn´t get used to it, but then, Joo Jin-Mo shows that very same cuteness about him, that was present in the youngest version, more than in the 20ies version, the way he plays the character. he may look way different, but through his mannerisms you suddenly see that same young boy, his tantrums and smiles! And you can also see some of the 20ies version in it, the hopefulness, the desperation. amazing skills, I say. how can he incorporate 2 actors performances into his own? Kim Sa -Rang is a bit stiff compared to him, but I keep calling her another Sa Rang cause all the pages are so flooded with news on a certain variety show.

but I am annoyed here, as well. in the recent years quite a few people went to...

but I am annoyed here, as well. in the recent years quite a few people went to jail for deception such as the parents and the husband and the friend and that b**** are doing. taking away someones identity is violating basic human rights. So having everyone do criminal acts so easily, there is no way it would happen. People are chicken and most people are really bad liars. only a few in a 100 000 are good enough to deceive others for a long time. Most get caught pretty soon

no update from Ninja Teacher? I am worried...

so question today comes from those two dramas: how good do you think you would be in deceiving people with an entirely different identity? It can seem like a rude question but are you a good liar? Is it ever justified to rely on such masquerade (well, if you are a secret agent, I suppose....)
How long before you got caught if you were Eun Ha?
well that girl is wearing her emotions on her sleeve and she is so obvious, looking quilty and trapped all the time.

Well, If I'm a secret agent of course I need to disguise and assume other identity right?? Haha

Anyway I think I actually a good liar. There's something still puzzling me sometimes. Sometimes when I tell the truth, people don't believe it, my friends won't believe it. Even when I insist it. But when I tell the lie, people readily believe it. Of course I couldn't be a good liar in front of my parent/family. But in front of my friends and/or stranger I could tell a lie and put poker face to it.

However, If I were 'acting' as Eun Ha, I would probably just go with the flow, acting my part. Because I like acting and I think study our own acting is fun! (I'm not sure if it's applicable in real life, but if my life was Mask drama, I would just acting my part on it)

Anyway I think I actually a good liar. There’s something still puzzling me sometimes. Sometimes when I tell the truth, people don’t believe it, my friends won’t believe it. Even when I insist it. But when I tell the lie, people readily believe it. Of course I couldn’t be a good liar in front of my parent/family. But in front of my friends and/or stranger I could tell a lie and put poker face to it.

My German boss once taught me that you should never become too good a liar, because people will never trust you if you do. You should always lie badly enough to give other people the chance to detect your lies, hence they can decide whether they want to know if you lie or not, and that does allow them to keep their trust in you.

I thought that was quite a word of wisdom.

Easy-peasy. ACTING! :theatrical flourish:

It's television. How boring would it be if all shows talked about regular folks doing regular stuff? People falling in love in universities, through friends or in bars? Sometimes shows tend to flirt with the absurd or the edge of the penal code or both. At least in television bad people end up behind bars, dead or at least repented. Isn´t it really the reason we watch films, dramas or read books? Isn't our life real enough or, at times, depressing enough?

Hi Beanies,
Missed last week. I have been in docent training at Mono Lake National Scenic Area for the past two weeks. It was so much fun. Tonight there is storytelling under the stars, so I have the morning to spend with you all.

I'm trying to cut back on the drama viewing so I can get my reading done. I'm sure the visitors would prefer I be conversant on the history and geology of the area than on what's happening in the the Korean drama world. Ha Ha.

Watched:
High Society--For some reason I really feel for our heroine. She is so alone. It's a wonder she is so strong. Maybe she didn't live at home during school and so had other influences? At any rate, I bawled the last quarter of episode 4. I haven't cried that hard since Secret Garden.

Mask--Despite the cliches, I am hanging in there. The main couple had better make more progress this coming week or the show may lose me.

Warm & Cozy--Ditto on the main couple here. I think the Hong sisters are using the old pattern of keeping the couple apart until episode 13. That's so 2013. The only reason I keep watching is I am girl-crushing on all the women, especially the diver. So spunky.

Oh, also, what was that with the mother suddenly appearing? And now the father? Where is the reconciliation in the story line?

My Love--This one is a strange one. I'm mostly watching for the acting, because the story reminds me of that awful Rain drama, My Girl. Anyone else watching this?

@ktiep
About My Love.... those were my thoughts too!!! Reminded me of Full House, I think you meant... My Girl was not as bad as Full House in terms of the length of time it took the guy to come to his senses and stop running after some other girl. Rain was in Full House. Lee Dong Wook and Lee Da Hae were in My Girl. There were more cute couple-ish moments in My Girl than in Full House. So I liked it a lot.

As for My Love Eun Dong, I have a hard time believing anyone will just put every other love on hold for a girl he cannot find for over a second decade. But even putting that aside, the romance is not really reaching me. I find it hard to reconcile the 3 sets of actors playing the same persons. The youngest ones were the best. We should not have had the middle 2 I feel, and we should just have continued with the oldest version who did not see each other for 20 years or whatever.

It is looking to become quite a melodrama... so be prepared if you're going to watch it. :)

On a more "conspiracy theory" note, I keep having the weird feeling that this is NOT the original script.
It could have been something like A Wife's Credentials (where both leads are married to other people- him to a filthy rich wife and her to a husband in a wheelchair...what would they have done then, right?).
Or maybe it could have been a revenge-drama of a woman who has lost her memory and everyone of her close friends and family had been lying to her untill the main lead (re-)appeared...perhaps a 50-episode or a daily drama?
But the moment (the heavenly gorgeous) JJM and his undeniable talent got tagged into this project, MLED became the Vow's and Notebook's "illegitimate child".
Don't get me wrong, I really like the drama (bcoz I luuuuuv JJM, above everything else in it, it's true ;-) ). But the rest of the cast is a bit...huh,how should I put it without being rude or nagging? It's not on a par with JJM; especially the two female leads are for sure less talented. He certainly deserved a better leading lady,imho...

Count me in as one is also hooked on this drama. I love any drama told from a man's POV... Yes, there are a lot of drama tropes, looks like it may be a melo, and you have to suspend belief and just go with all the coincidences. But it does look as if the third parties are not going to derail anything ...
And I am suspicious that her child just happens to be 10 years old ... which happens to be the exact length of time that they were apart ... and her husband who she married after an accident 10 years ago is a paraplegic and asking doctor if he will ever be a man again ...

[END SPOILER ... SPECULATION]

Lol. I've suspended too much belief that I don't even need to try. There are times that I just go WTF because of plot holes. But there are also times when I don't even realize the plot holes until someone points it out. I've convinced myself that every drama is flawed and that I don't need to point it out. So I guess I'm good at playing blind? Hehe.

Hello all!! My kdrama addiction is growing!! :)) its the summer though so i dont feel so bad...aha.

Ex-girlfriends Club- really enjoyed this one and how light it was..though I have to say Myungsoo and the director were pretty damn awesome and the Director and the lion's fiance were hot together..I mean seriously..

School 2015- oh what a disappointment. show, you completely failed me. You had so much to work with and then that awful triangle that you milked to the very last second efing ruined it. seriously the only thing I take from this show was how freaking awesome Sungjae was as Taekwang..because even though So-hyun did a fantastic job playing the twins..you messed that up as well writing off eunbyul and never letting eunbi really stand up for herself and always being the damn damsel in distress..waiting for her sister or the boys..nope nope nope. It irritates me that had it ended slightly different I would probably not be so angry at what the show could have been, I almost wish I had been on the other ship..only I would have had to be watching a different show.. Next time if there is a next time, please lay off the romance or at the very least the monstrous love triangle. ok? ok.

Warm&cozy- only reading recaps and its a little on the boring side but I really do like the leads and it seems to be picking up..so yay!

Mask- I usually forgo these types of dramas but idk what it is, but I love this one. Brother-in-law is sooo evil but soooo damn fine.. and I love Minwoo. The female lead is pissing me off though. Been waiting for her to start..something..anything..I feel like I will be waiting forever tho.

High society- sooo sad that Yoonha now has no one on her side in her awful family. Idk what to think about Joonki. But I love Changsoo and Jiyi.

My love Eundong- Loving this one as well. Idk what they are going to do with this one but the leads have sizzling chemistry!

Producers- I feel bad for Baek seungchan..but I really dont want him and Yejin together..But I also dont want Joonmo with her either..because he has been pissing me off with his inaction. Please Please Please take ceo Byun down hard!! and be good to Cindy!!

Orange Marmalade- I just love the bromance in the saeguk portion...but thats about it. Annoyed with this one.

Also super excited for Jang Nara and Seo Inguk's new drama!!

Jang Nara's drama - funny that JNR said (in Happy together) her neck is going to break because male actors are so tall. She also mentioned Yi ChunSoo is more handsome than WonBin or Jang DongGun -lol.

Today is my dad's 65'th birthday.

School 2015- I personally like my In Time With You/9end2outs type ending for Eun-bi and Tae-gwang I imagined for myself much better than the real ending. Really I watched all the way to the end for Kim So-hyun, of course, Yook Sung-jae and Jo Soo-hyang.

I believe we should replace currency with Ben&Jerry's ice cream.

Warm and Cozy- I dropped this last week when I couldn't make myself finish watching episode 10. The recaps kind of make me think I should pick it back up with episode 11.

Hidden Identity- I liked the first episode but at the same time something felt off, I'm really not sure what. The second episode though I loved there's nothing I love more than a female asskicker. I do have to say that Yoon So-yi has the same problem as every other Korean actress not named Ha Ji-won, Lee Si-young or Han Groo in that I don't really buy her as an asskicker but still I'll just turn my brain off and enjoy it.

Mask- I hope Ji-sook is finally telling Min-woo who she is at the end of episode 7 so they can team up for real.

Hello beanies! This is my first time writing on an Open Thread so i'm a bit excited. I just finished 11th grade and today was our school's ending ceremony. I ended up in third place in my class so I got as a prize "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte which surprisingly I have not read before. Is it good?
As for kdramas here's what I'm watching:
School 2015: Oh I didn't like the ending. At all. I found it disturbing that even though everyone now knows that Eunbi is Eunbi she is still just living EunByul's life with her friends, her mom, her school and Yiahn. But show gave me Taekwang and two great songs (Reset and Return) so I'm not gonna be THAT mad
High Society: Contrary to most people I have very little interest in ChangSoo and Jiyi. Their romance is cute but I just don't care about it. I find Jiyi a biiit annoying but she's also really cute and a great friend. I'm just more interested in her and Yoonha's friendship than her love line with ChangSoo who's just a tipical chaebol (so far) blah. I find Yoonha and Joonki(was that his name?)'s characters more fascinating.
Mask: love love love this. It's totally my style. And besides that one time when Jisook went back to her house and her mother ran after her and collapsed (like why were you there again??) I have really loved our female lead. (i'm saying this cause I saw a lot of comments on viki saying she's stupid and so but I don't see that). Seokhoon is so crazy and hot that I'm not sure whether I love him or hate him. Probably both.
Producers: I only started watching this because I'm translating in on viki (to Romanian) and I haven't actually watched it besides the parts I was given to translate but I read all the recaps on dramabeans and I'm totally rooting for YeJin and SeungChan, I hope it ends that way though I feel it won't.

That's all so far ^^. I should get back to studying now cause I'm taking my CAE exam tommorrow and I'm reeeally nervous about it.
Have a nice weekend everyone!

Welcome to OT @Mina

I really enjoyed Wuthering Heights... one of the finest gothic romances, probably. I was both bewildered and enraptured by the intensity of the passion (as in feeling), and satisfied with the resolution... I guess such extreme and passionately loving individuals had to be given an ending of their own.

I am loving Mask. The characters are rich enough and interestingly conflicted so that we have many different feeling about them, as you yourself say.

Wuthering Heights is...let's just say the Brontes had a lot of issues. (Terrible abusive protagonist as a 'romantic' lead. :P)

But it's good to read it as it informs a lot of later novels and literary movements. But then go have a Jane Austen palate cleanser.

@Mask:
I have mixed feeling about the female. At times she does seem really stupid, which is kind of disappointing. Just for example, she goes through all sorts of odd ways to deliver some money to her family - why not just go to the nearest UPS store and have it delivered?

I don't know why, but far too often k-dramas start off with a really strong female lead, and about halfway through they reduce her to helpless female doormat status.

To this day, my favorite female heroine in k-dramas is the lady cop in "Windstruck". (Not on any of the usual k-drama sites, but is easy to find on YouTube).

Required fields are marked *

Well now that you said that I think the reason why her trying to send the money like that didn't bother me is because I wouldn't have known how to send it to them either! But I'm 16 and never had my own money so I don't know much about transfering them (I had to google what a UPS store is). But I get your point, indeed she is a bit stupid sometimes.
I will have to check out Windstruck then :D

>why not just go to the nearest UPS store and have it delivered?

Why did she even get that money to pay for their debt, wasn't one of her requests to have the villain pay for that? Did not one of his thugs tried to pay already? It's crazy. The best way to enjoy Mask is not to think about anything in a logical universe.

0

Required fields are marked *

This is something that I think the villain should have been more clear about at the beginning of ep 7. If you remember, a few eps back he agreed to pay back her debt slowly so that the transaction is undetectable. I think the purpose of giving her the money was his way of showing her that she still needs his help. She had just said that she wouldn't go along with his plan regarding Min-woo, but she'll have to if she wants Seung-hoon to continue to help with her debt. He gave her the chance to do it herself and it was too hard.

Honestly, I don't really blame her for not being able to figure out how to pay it. My frustrations with her lie solely in her inability to act. Even with that though, I still like her and am giving her the benefit of the doubt that there will be some growth...it just needs to be soon. Step it up, Mask. I'm enjoying you too much even with all your ridiculousness/cliches so at least give me a stronger heroine again!

My take on why the money ended up with Ji Sook is that Seok Hoon let jealousy get the better of his rational thought. He saw Min Woo give Ji Sook body heat and breakfast so he came running to give her ginseng tea (also warms the body) and a box of cash! One-up-manship gone crazy! LOL!

Producers - I have taken a break, I will marathon last four episodes.

MASK- well it's twists and turns are quite predictable but it's hooking in a way. For me, when I am watching an episode, I cant help but have to finish but after it is over then it is over, no hang over :P

W&C- I knew I loved Kang So Ra very much but I did not know I loved YYS too, because there is absolutely no other reason to watch. Bow to YYS, I dont think any other actor could hook me to this terrible drama.

High Society- I know it is messy, not a very sharp writing, acting, story telling and what so ever. Even I have never seen so many contradictory comments about casting. Like

Uee is awesome and classy/ Uee is so wooden
Sung Joon's subtle acting is good/ Sung Joon cant emote
Hyung Shik is stealing the show/ Hyun Shik is overacting
Ji Won is terrible/ Ji Won is really natural

may be I am new to K Drama, so I am witnessing first time that all the leads are criticized and praised simultaneously!!!!

well I like it because none the leads are flawless. when it was called a reverse Cinderella story, I thought the female lead would be a typical innocent, ideally good, kind hearted girl, who just crashed into the real tough world but sympathetic to poors. But she is actually mean, delusional, not disliking the luxury of rich people no intention to leave that either.
Our hero is a bad, manipulative guy.
Second lead is typical chaebol spoiled child.
Ji Yi is shown harmless and innocent so far, but who knows, I am prepared to any kind of weird revelation ;)

I like your observation of the bipolar reactions to kdramas, in particular, the acting. Ain't it the truth, the reactions and comments span the gamut . It just comes down to a matter of Personal Preference (which I just marathoned with two out of town friends who loved it and have gone on to watch King of High School - yes! Spring the kdrqmq love)!

I usually give kdramas lots of changes to win me over. When I first started watching, I read somewhere to give a Kdrama 10 episode chance, which I did religiously until recently and finally trust my own instincts and tastes to say "No" to one that isn't doing it for me (there aren't many, actually, but typically it's a rom com with modern, noisy amulet or a saeguk). Anyhoot, here we are - many backgrounds, tastes, and biases - in the ever enlarging universe of kdramas - Watch on, fighting!

Hello beanies!

For this one, I can't skip OT because there's quite one two dramas I want to discuss.

Mask: I didn't love Secret, even when everyone was CRAAAZY over it and I like the leads. But this one, THIS ONE drama, feels more like old-school melodrama.. Sure, full of cliches with plot points and characters you probably already fully familiar. But somehow I'm hooked! I love the OTP, love Joo Ji Hoon and Soo Ae.. Many frustrating points, illogical, nonsense plot, but I still watch it religiously... and holy moly ep 7 and 8 are the best so far for me.. *still fangirling from Min Woo's confession*
I like Min Woo's confession here.. Aigoo, I could even recite it on my dreams probably.. Suk Hoon by far is the most interesting character, Min Woo is close second.. Ji Sook/Eun Ha still so timid and passive, but at least tries to have some backbone. I like the romance too.. I feel like I should watch more melodrama to get real romance.. Haha
So far, I like it. The best drama out of the current bunch for me!

Producer: Only hope for clearing misunderstandings and everyone gets their own love. At this point, I don't even care which character with whom. I just care for 4 leads to have their own happiness.

Warm and Cozy: Gun Woo grows a brain and finally mature enough.. But somehow I don't feel excited to watch this drama.. (Well, part of it because I watch Mask). I bet he'll leave JJ alone in Jeju, while he's running away somewhere.. only to come back at the last minute. By that time, I wish JJ married to Mayor Wook already! LOL.. Hong Sisters have such formulaic plot that the leads will separate and reunite again in the end, so I won't be surprised at all if it happens here..

I wanna try I Remember You next week, the preview seems promising.. Jang Na Ra and Seo In Guk also the actors I like.

@kanz

Strangely, I do not feel the cliches in Mask. Maybe they help bring an old familiar feel, but whatever, I love this show. I find the confessions or near confessions of our rivals over Ji Sook very satisfying. All that male ego and competition made me laugh, especially with the heroine playing it as if she can't see what's happening, probably because she cannot risk being found out before she is ready to tell, at least. It's good that she's almost ready to tell! I like that the 'confessions' are up and out early enough and not kept to the very end. I feel that the show is doing something right to have kept me (us) quite desperately wanting more, which seems to prove that lack of originality may not always be a bad thing. :)

Agree! Even if the show full of cliches, somehow I still enjoy it A LOT.
The confession part and the kiss did surprise me a bit, because it's quite early according to drama standard. But I like what I watch so far.. However pathetic our heroine seems to be, the hero and the villains are a great watch!

Hello al:

Dramaland:

Producers: Still liking it a lot. Wondering if the drama wil just end with no romances...cause ya know..REALISM (mock realism?)

Mask: Am glad phobic hero has taken the lead in discovering stuff. The humor in this drama is over-the-top cool, as is the villain. I shouldn't be so in love with the villain, should I?

High Society: Ah, Joong-ki! I so hope you're in love and not ya know... totally out to win an empire by bedding smitten wounded girl. We all know older brother's not dead, right? Awaiting empire shake-up and power struggles.

Masked Prosecutor: Watching this...sorta kinda.. waiting for bromance between brothers to begin and or evil mom to get come-uppance. Ah, these separated half-sibs.

Hidden Identity: Darn..the angst! Yep, am hooked.

Awaiting Scholar who walks the night and I remember you.

Have a great weekend, all.

Hey! I'm actually here in time to join the conversation! :)

This is a laundry weekend, so no exciting plans for me, alas.

I have a fantasy question, though - if you could magically appear in any k-drama in a supporting role, which would you choose? (Despite my love of crime dramas, I'd have to choose Marriage, not Dating - I loved virtually hanging out w/those characters - or Misaeng, because I'd be less likely to be killed off in some creative way.)

What I've been watching:

Missing Noir M: Finally finished it. :sad face: That was really a downer of an ending, wasn't it?

Hidden Identity (which I'm calling "Undercover" in my head): Wow, Kim Beom really transformed himself for this role, didn't he? I liked it, though there were some cliche problems. Took me forever to figure out where I'd seen the female officer (she was in 2009's "Hero" with Lee Joon Ki.)

The Lover: I'm starting to really dislike the two older couples. But I'm still blown away by Jae Joon's acting chops.

K-drama Moment:

Talked the orderer into getting Misaeng for the library - I'm trying to get them to also add The Con Artists (aka 'The Technicians'). Can't wait to introduce patrons to the beauty that is Chief Oh. :)

Secondary K-drama moment:

Listening to music in the car the other day, when the 10 year old says "Why are they talking so weird? I mean, it's Korean, but it doesn't sound right."

Me: "That's not Korean, it's Welsh. It's a Welsh band."

Her: "But they say "Oppa!"

(Yes, they do. But I have no idea what that means in Welsh.)

I would choose School 2015 just to hang out with Taekwang but I don't want to get my heart broken since he likes Eunbi and how could I not fall for him if we were friends?? So I'm going with School 2013!

I would totally weasel my way into the Flower Boy Apartment Complex of Flower Boy Next Door. I mean, look at the neighbours!

and I would totally choose to be a supporting character in Warm & Cozy too (yes, the plot is silly but it's set in Jejudo after all - what's not to like? And I could try a hand at consoling poor Wookie and getting the local ajusshis and ajummas to set me up with him instead of Jung-joo - never say I'm not ambitious!)

he is just such a hot psycho. I cannot resist.

um, can Ninja Teachers´ aka Eun Oh´s magic fan from Arang and the Magistrate banish the demon Do Young? No? I was sure... I think it only works on different demons... anyway, I would so love to be his sidekick, anywhere. Or a crazy shaman giving him weird advice.

Heroine turning up in so many plac...heck, both heroine and ahjusshi detective turning up in so many places! It was a bit ridiculous. Cover could be blown very easily by doing that. I understand they want her to be bad-ass and to show everyone's skilz in undercovering but wow...

Hi Beanies,

I'm not entirely sure how this goes, but after reading the comments I can see that everybody is writing about the dramas they love and so I will write mine too.

Ex-Girlfriend Club: it was a huge surprise that this became my favorite drama of the year, because the ratings were low and the episodes were cut down. But EGC had its own charm to deliver goodies and make us choke with sweetness.... I'm pretty sure I have diabetes after watching this! Song Ji Hyo and Byun Yo Han were perfect as the best friends who grew to become lovers and I loved seeing them in the screen together so much. I would lie if I said that these two were the only good things in the show because I believe every character delivered their own story arc and made it believable and so freaking amazing. Bang Myung Soo (Yo Han) and Kim Soo Jin (Ji Hyo) are best friends. But when they meet after quite a long time, its for Kim PD to write the movie of Writer Bang's comic novel featuring his three ex-girlfriends. Where is she???! Oopsie.. He never thought of her as a girl he dated... Commence angry/drunk beating session. I really love EGC because all characters had so much chemistry. Soo Jin, Myung Soo, Jo Psycho- I mean, Director Jo Geun, Ji Ah (gf 1), Hwa Young (gf 2) and breakout star (IMO) Ra Ra (gf 3) who starts to have a crush on the director. Lols. I've never laughed so hard like this before. I would keep recommending it to anybody who will listen. Because it. Is. Amazing! A must see!!!! And I promise you, you cannot undo the love you might have for Byun Yo Han... Its a cross you have to bear...

Masked Prosecutor: I haven't finished watching it, but I love Joo Sang Wook too much to ignore it. And Kim! Sun! Ah! Is back in dramaland, girls!!!! The prosecutor in a wrestling mask who wreaks havoc yet becomes gutless in front of the girl he loves is EPIC! Reminds me that I have to check out the latest episodes...

That's all for now.. I also love Divorce Lawyer In Love and High Society but I'll write abou5 it sometime later..

Toodles, girls!!!

Marriage, Not Dating. So. darn. funny.

Two Weeks: Tightly plotted, fantastic acting, edge-of-your seat thriller.

Misaeng: I know, it sounds boring. Office drama? But it's not. It's difficult and joyful and funny and heartbreaking.

(Lesser, but still great:

Shut Up! Flower Boy Band: Catchy songs, bad boys, and a theme of "Corporate Rock Sucks".

Bad Boys: Violent cop drama about using criminals to catch really bad guys.

Missing Noir M: Violent cop drama about a special missing persons unit. Tight and well-written.

Swipe Tap Love (HK): I love the story-telling in the show. For me, the show isn't about love; it's more of a fresh representation of urban emotions/relationships. Really adore the way songs are incorporated into the story-telling because it reflects the way we sometimes associate a song to a significant event/time period/person in our life.

Dramas that kept me entertained/riveted from beginning to end (without a lot of frustration):

Healer – My new gold standard against which I measure all other dramas. Perfect OTP and love triangle (with only two players!). This show delivered absolutely everything I wanted in a drama.

City Hunter – Best of the action thrillers - has a vibe somewhat similar to Healer but the romance isn’t quite as good.

Shut-up Flower Boy Band – Best of the coming of age dramas - not a bad or boring episode in the bunch

Queen In-Hyun’s Man – a pure romance about lovers born centuries apart

My Love From the Stars – the h was great fun

The Princess’ Man – a smash up of Romeo & Juliet, Count of Monte Cristo and King Richard III.

Autumn’s Concerto (Taiwanese drama) Has every drama cliché that you can think of but put together in a totally addictive fashion.

Shut Up! Flower Boy Band. Great OST, great bromance, and a somewhat unexpected ending. I really love that the show was about friendship.

You From Another Star. Cheon Song-Yi is SUPER HILARIOUS. It wouldn't hurt that Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun's chemistry is through the roof.

Nodame Cantabile (JP). Watched the anime, the drama and the movies (twice!).

Fated To Love You (Korean). The first half was cute and warm, the other was a bit angsty but Jang Hyuk's Lee Gun made everything enjoyable. From his laugh to his crazy antics all for the love of Mi Young was just something.

plus Kill Me Heal Me - I was a little annoyed at the angsty episodes, but I still watched like an addict. not only did I enjoy every episode, but I had serious trouble waiting for next week, watching all and every bit of BTS, news etc

Greatest Love - hilarious.... maybe my stomach muscles didn´t enjoy it as much as I did, they were in pain

City Hunter - so badass, Ahjussi-Yoon scenes were so adorable, and the hot prosecutor well ok, I just had a bad crush on the prosecutor so I always scrolled back to watch his scenes again

Two Weeks - I lived for all the scenes with Tae San and his adorable daughter. plus it was just a badass series

Protect the boss - honest, I personally loved it, and what made every episode worth it was that the second leads were not just cute, but had a certain quirkiness about them, they weren´t typically annoying

So, I'm glad School 2015 is over. I stopped watching at episode 15. It already headed in a direction I didn't like and I didn't have any hope that it would get any better. As the end of Falling for Innocence can attest, I can forgive an objectively terrible ending if it resonates with me emotionally, but I didn't think that was going to happen.

So, I showed my cousin Healer. I'm actually somewhat impressed with Park Min Young after watching her in City Hunter. I don't know how much of my mehness towards her in the drama was her character or acting, because towards the end City hunter she fell into my worst Kdrama pet peeve. That is introducing a strong character and zapping her of that strength, oftentimes due to domineering hero. (Notable example the main girl in secret garden)

The most notable thing about introducing another uninitiated person to Kdrama is how cheesy kdrama can get sometimes. I think I've let more and more cheesiness slide the more kdrama's I've seen. My cousin wants to watch an hour of Healer a day, which is hard for me since the show's good. She's wanted to watch more and more than originally planned for her ( which I take as a good sign) Oddly enough, she's not so much into the action as I thought and more so into the romance.

Ooh first time here!

I'm trying to finish Let's Eat 2 before continuing with other shows. Dujun is a huge draw for me but I really can't be bothered with the show's actual plot. Every time I watch the show, I'm more bitter than Sooji can overlook Goo Daeyoung for Sangwoo like "HELLO? GIRL ARE YOU BLIND? Do you not see how ideal Daeyoung is?" but that might really be my Dujun-bias speaking. But the foodporn scenes are A+

I love My Ex-Girlfriend Club. Jihyo and Yohan has zero chemistry but they are adorable individually. The three ex-girlfriends are awesome and should really have their own show. I don't want to finish the show because I'll miss Byun Yohan so much TT__TT

Missing Noir M: Why is the show getting sadder with every episode?! The ending though ... Does this mean we are getting a Season 2?

I just started The Master's Sun and I love it, even though it's the same rich guy-poor girl storyline and the male is portrayed as the female's savior AGAIN. I'm basically watching this for Gong Hyojin and So Jisub individually. (And maybe Seo Inguk.)

Side-Track: Empress of China is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS IN THE VISUALS ASPECTS. The plot gets draggy after a while but I can never resist watching another episode of Fan Bingbing's beauty (and cleavage)

Should I start Witch's Romance and Reply 1997?

Uh... "Zero chemistry"? I would agree to disagree with that... I found their chemistry to be sizzling and so hot.. No lips were touched but they were in their own romantic world... I loved Byun Yo Han and Song Ji Hyo here.. I would like to say that BYH is SJH's best co-actor, chemistry wise.

But yes, please let the ex-gfs have their own show. They were epic in it! I would love to see the three of them act together again..

Good that you are watching Master's Sun because it is the most amazing drama I've ever seen. I'm perfectly addicted to it!

As to what to watch next, I'd recommend Reply 1997. It was EPIC!

Completely agree with Byun Yo Han and Song Ji Hyo's chemistry. Song Ji Hyo was okay with Choi Jin-Hyuk and Lee Pil-Mo in Emergency Couple, though I preferred LPM, but with Yo Han there is something different. Both as friends and as a couple, there interactions were great to watch and was really fangirl inducing. They really felt like a couple.

This is going to be about J drama.

Ishitachi no Renai Jijyo( love affairs of doctors?); I decided to watch this drama after I read an article from Japan that many female doctors remain single or divorced. I am not a fan of Saito Takumi but he got this quality that no Japanese actors have,,, I would call his special charm, dirty sexiness. Since many hot Japanese actors got married recently, he now ranks one of the hottest actors in Japan.

Sono Otoko Ishiki Takai kei; a quarky drama ( work place setting)about a young man who thinks very highly of himself and an older woman who doubts his ability but in a situation where she needs to help him out.

Tenno no ryoriban( the chef for Emperor) based on a true story of a man who became a chef for the Emperor in Meiji/ Taisho era. It's actually worth watching. I thought that Takeru Satoh is just a good looking boy but he displays his acting ability here. Kuroki Haru who plays his wife( or x wife) is brilliant. She diffuses the fragrance of a woman of Meiji /Taisho era ( they had backbones). She is brilliant in it.

Fuben na Benriya. ; I thought Okada Masaki is just a handsome, prince like actor but he is quite good in this very strange drama. I feel that his role is his true self.

Tatakau shoten girl( fighting book shop girls?): I just decided to watch this because I thought it is absurd that this drama is about a bookshop. But I like it. the Main female has to face much difficulties due to her gender. I have a soft spot for Daito Yusuke.

Plots of those dramas are quite different from K drama. They are not formatted or formulated like K drama. But they do not have an intensity of agonies or devastating heart breaks, either!

I wish a book shop became a wrestling ground for girls to fight,, that would be hilarious.
But this one is set in a large bookshop. The main female is( I guess) nearly forty and she is very serious yet thoughtful worker. Then there is a Rakkasan female worker( via a connection) came to work. She kind of misbehaves at first but she does not come across a typical k drama spoiled kid. she thinks she is better than other workers because she loves books but she gradually learns to understand other workers and learn to be cooporative with other workers. But over all it tells Japanese work ethics along with some love lines and manipulation at work. I used to love staying at bookshops in Japan and now I really appreciate their work.

Yeah! J-drama suggestions ^_^ I've been looking for something that would replace Ouroboros after I finished watching it and So no Otoko, Ishiki Takai Kei sounds like something I would pick-up.

Hoping it wouldn't be hard watching this. The only thing I dislike about watching J-dramas, especially airing ones, is the amount it takes to sub the episodes. I'm so use to the subbing speed of K-dramas *sigh*

The last j-drama I watched with a high note of emotions was a Kimura Takuya drama, of course! Intensity plus a (small) portion of agony plus KimuTaku...What's not to like? BTW, Ando Lloyd was not what I thought it should be. Maybe the female lead was a bit too young for me to let the drama sweap me off my feet...
Anyone with a good suggestion on j-dramas? Am all ears, guys :-)

<Ishitachi no Renai Jijyo

It's a pretty standard hospital drama (no new grounds here at all), and I can't say I'm too fond of some of the characters, including the lead female (her character is quite boring IMO). Saito Takumi's character I like quite a lot. I think with Takumi, a lot of his work isn't particularly interesting, but every now and then he gives a performance that makes me sit up and notice. Like in Glass House (definitely that special charm is there). And in Ai to Makoto, where he plays a supporting role – a quite different character from his normal ones (the loser nerd that is in love with the female lead).

<Fuben na Benriya

I love this one. It's simple, there's no plot but it's HILARIOUS. Cracks me up every single episode. All the characters are awesome. Okada Masaki is wonderful in this – I don't think it's his "true self" but rather he's naturally more suited to comedy. He can do physical comedy, he can speed-talk, and he's spot on with comic timing. In the heavier dramas and films he's done I have never found him that compelling.

Tried some of the others you mentioned but none managed to hold my interest. Had no patience for the young guy in Sono Otoko Ishiki Takai kei; nor for the spoilt rich young woman in Tatakau Shoten Girl. Maybe if better actors had played those characters, but I just found them annoying.

@atz, I've been meaning to start Tenno no Ryoriban so thanks for the mention/reminder.

May as well try Fuben na Benriya too. :)

Currently watching Ishitachi no Renai Jijyo. The most recent episode was heavy handed but I get/like the series overall. Saito Takumi downplays his sexiness in dramas to me...at least the ones I've seen him in. It makes me think that he does not consider himself HOT because he smolders on screen. Is he humble?

It reads like you have not given Aimu Homu (I'm Home) a try. It's very good. The female lead is preggers (IRL) and growing by the episode....Love it.

Peace to all.

Happy Friday, everyone! (and wow, 400 OTs - that's a milestone!)

Good riddance to School 2015 this week, but Kim So-hyun was amazing and will be coming for everyone's lead roles very soon. There's nothing she can't play, it looks like - sageuks, modern dramas, heavy melos, mysteries, and now a double role where she made such a clear distinction between the two characters that I actually had to remind myself that the twins were played by the same girl.

High Society - looks like it wants to be Nice Guy, but Uee is no Moon Chae-won. And Sung Joon, much as I love him, is no Song Joong-ki.

Warm & Cozy - another drama that owes its watchability solely to its leads, especially Kang Sora. If it wasn't for her, I'd have bounced long ago, but she suits the character so perfectly that it seems like a shame not to watch. The drama may have an insane number of failings, but the choice of leads is not one of them.

also, kind of anticipating/dreading the Producer finale (that kiss was NOT ok, Seung-chan! If Tae-kwang kissing Eun-bi on the cheek in School 2015 was not ok, this definitely isn't, either)

I just want Cindy to be happy, and Ye-jin too. We got a really good cast, but IU was the real surprise - despite early criticism, she really nailed the part of Cindy. Good on her!

Tae-kwang kissing Eun-bi was the writer dragging out the triangle.

Seung-chan kissing Ye-jin was rather out of character (I'm guessing fan service).

Yup...

I miss the experimental variety bit – I loved that and I watch ZERO Korean variety shows.

Producer is enjoyable largely because the cast is great and I do rather like some of the character's (Ye-jin and Seung-chan. Yes, I like Ye-jin, I always did!). I still like it a lot, but it could have been a stand-out...

0

yeah, the cast saved it. And I'm firmly on Team Ye-jin too, I love her prickliness. Flawed heroines>>>>>>>>>>> perfect, sweet polite Candy (same goes with Cindy)

0

Finally watched the finale of How to Get Away with Murder (woah, took me a long time) and despite being spoiled already, I was still slightly blown away by everything! hahaha Now onto the dramas.

Ex-Girlfriend Club. This show is seriously one of my favorites. I watched this with zero expectations and was rewarded with gut busting humor and an amazing cast. I was heart broken that it was cut down to 12 episodes but they managed to end the series without it feeling too rushed. Hoping to see Hwa Young, Byun Yo-Han, and Do Sang-Woo in more dramas ^^

Producer. I stopped watching by episode 5 and started reading the recaps because it was starting to have a different feel. The mockumentary style was slowly vanishing episode by episode and the lovelines were becoming the main story. I know it is kinda foolish to stop because of the romance but I was becoming too invested in BSC x Cindy and RJM x TYJ ships that I could probably become an emotional wreck if the couples don't end up together in the finale. But romance aside, I'm glad the Cindy is becoming such a warm character. Will just marathon this after all episodes air.

High Society. I watched the first two episodes and it's not pulling me in. Although Park Hyung Shik is stealing the show and the second leads are too adorable, the plot is not something I would like to devote my time. Maybe is too melo for me or there is just something off. Reading/skimming the recaps for now.

got home now, wanted to add about Night Scholar: there is a picture now of Changmin in the princely outfit. MBC Facebook page has it. go see and tell me what you think

and what is your estimation, by all means let this post not mean zit or jinx anything, but if Lee Yu Bi cannot return for a long time? what should be done? postpone? switch roles - thats impossible if they follow the original material right? I am getting worried. but she should rest as long as necessary.

they say Teacher returned to shooting today. Hope he is feeling ok and not on painkillers.

Hey everybody...happy OT!!

It's been a long while since I've been on here...thanks to grad school for keeping me super busy! It's reduced my drama watching time for sure, but I've been able to catch one or two, on-and-off.

Hidden Identity: This was what I've been looking forward to for weeks...and it does not disappoint at all!! I know it's only the first week but I am loving it so far. When the posters first came out, I was bemoaning the loss of Kim Bum's cute babyface...but not anymore! I definitely could get used to serious, scruffy, sullen kickass fighter extraordinaire!! I love how all the acting by all the team members are on point, although I'd love for them to elaborate on why Gun-woo is the way he is. I love how the whole team is in sync at pulling off their reconnaissance on Teacher Jung. Tae-in is also a mystery, although I could tell right off the bat that he was undercover. Being inexistent in police records must be a rock and a hard place, seeing how Teacher Jung is taking advantage of being that sneaky bastard of blowing his cover, only to realize he doesn't exist in police records. I'm definitely going to keep up with this, even during summer session and GA work :)

Let Her Cry: Ok, I'll admit it...I'm only watching this for Son Chang-eui. Even despite the typical rich lady drama between his sis-in-laws (which grates on my nerves), I'm sticking with it to see Duk-in's journey from being married to cheating asshole to chaebol wife. It's satisfying to see father-in-law so approving and supportive of her and sneering at her ex, who is trying to marry into the family (being Captain Obvious here, but wife of a cheater hands down > cheating scumbag). I liked seeing Duk-in being so kickass ahjumma (didn't even know she was ex-detective)...but am liking seeing her rise from being dealt like crap to having cheating ex grovel at her feet to start over, now that chaebol daughter knows there's no way in hell dad would ever let them marry (haaa). But, of course, the writer needs to add in the monkey wrench -- your son (basically) killed my son! Oh no! -- into the mix. Argh. Yet another roadblock that they gotta overcome.

Masked Prosecutor: Haven't seen this week's eps yet, but at least the story is moving along in unveiling Dae-chul's identity as masked prosecutor, as well as the loveline slowly coming together. I didn't realize until recently how many Scent of a Woman cast members are in this as well.

Three Meals a Day: I'm loving watching Seo-jinnie and Taecyeon in this. I read rave reviews of the installation with Chajumma Cha Seung-won -- does anyone know where I can still catch this? I don't need subs. It's interesting and so entertaining with Na PD at the helm.

1N2D: Just decided to tune in this week and it was bring your platonic girlfriend week! It's interesting to see Moon Geun-young in variety. All the guys I thought would get egged did -- to hilarious effect ;)

Have a great weekend,...

Where did you find Let Her Cry (Make a woman cry) subbed?

I've actually been watching it raw...both online and at home, because MBC America decided to forgo the subbing process (to which shows would be shown 3-4 weeks delayed) and is broadcasting it without any subs.

For the most part, I've found it doesn't really need it...especially the parts where sis-in-law #1 & #2 are fighting (since I don't care to know the specifics of what they're arguing about anyway). I do seems to notice on forums where people are bemoaning the fact that, despite the ratings of this drama compared to its predecessors, it's not being subbed by Viki (like the previous Jang Bori and A Little Love Never Hurts were).

School 2015 - It started out so promising and mysterious and then went downhill. Don't regret watching it because Tae Kwang(and Sung Jae) was awesome; and got to know about YSJ and BTOB because of it. Though I wish it wasn't as heartbreaking as it was. I feel so silly saying it but I cried my heart out for half an hour or more. Haha.
Kim So Hyun was great as usual! Thumbs up to Jo Soo Hyang too!

High Society - Liking the second leads more. Glad that the second lead loves a girl who will most likely end up with him (unless the story goes CRAZY). After School 2015, I don't want crazy triangles for a long time.

Hidden Identity - Haven't started it yet but will definitely be watching because I love Yoon So Yi even though I have only watched her in one drama before. Love Kim Bum too. And I love mystery/thriller/crime/investigation :)

Mask - I am not as hooked as I was before. Still it's fun to see Min Woo fall in love with Ji Sook. Intrigued by what happened in Seo Eun Ha's case. Ji Sook is beginning to annoy me a bit though. When her former classmate came and talked to her, she should have held her head high and told him that she is Eun Ha. Instead, she hung her head and looked guilty. If that doesn't make it obvious that she is not who she says she is. I know it's hard to look confident when you feel that someone is looking through you and sees you for who you really are but still. I want her to be stronger than she is now. Also the money delivery thing that other viewers mentioned. The methods she tried are kinda stupid and easy ways to reveal that JS is alive.

I Remember You - Looking forward to it! Love both Seo In Guk and Jang Na Ra, and the teaser looked funny and cute!

Hi everyone!

I am having such a love/hate relationship with MASK. It's almost like watching a drama as a joke but it sucks you right in. lol I love the contract marriage angle and the OTP has sizzling hot chemistry even though I hate most of the actions that Ji Sook takes. It's like she just reacts to things without thinking of what consequence her actions will bring.

I also find the villain hilariously funny. He is like a force of nature that is just pure evil. I get a kick out of watching him show up anytime/anywhere Ji Sook starts messing up. I know he's supposed to be this dead-serious guy who I need to fear but he just makes me laugh so hard with all his evil shenanigans.

I just watched Episode 11 of Producers raw and, even though I did not understand half of what was going on, I have to admit, I did shed some man-tears. Can't wait for it to get subbed later today.

Everyone, have a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Yup. Mask is full of clichés, and a heroine that is becoming less and less heroic (and stupider), yet I can't stop watching it. I am beginning to think that this is as much parody as real drama.

About it being more like parody than real drama, I'm beginning to agree with you. Seok-hoon seems to not so much be interested in taking personal revenge on the evil plutocrats responsible for the maiming and death of his father and his own impoverished childhood as he is in bringing down the whole capitalist system. Although how he will do this by taking over a Korean department store is pretty much a mystery to me at this point. Ji-sook seems to have lost all ability to blink so terrified she is by the situation she's in and reacts with mouse-like squeaking every time anyone so much as asks her to pass the salt at the breakfast table.

Min-woo must have whiplash with all the 180's he's been doing with his "wife". Kiss me, you fool, but don't touch me while doing so! And the clue his sister, who should be hospitalized for chronic alcoholism by now, gives him when she hands him the flowered pen - talk about cryptic! Why doesn't she just show him the photos of Seok-hoon and Eun-ha together? It's like they are all playing an elaborate scavenger hunt.

The mother who collapses with an acute medical emergency and is at death's door every single episode, the money which never quite gets delivered, the brother repeatedly sent on mysterious collections by a loan shark who never seems to get paid, orphans, ramen rice cakes which set new standards in deliciousness, lecherous ex-schoolmates! Good grief! What's next? I am actually enjoying all this.

Heartless City is good. One of my favorite gritty drama (though I always close my eyes whenever they start beating someone, it's sooo cruel I can't even watch). But it's start to get messy in the last 3-4 last episodes. Might be better if they went with 16 eps format.

I watched Sound of the Desert and fell in love with Eddie Peng/Wei Wu Ji haha. Loved the character and the actor. My goodness, I didn't know he had it in him. I've never liked his acting before but he was so good here at least to me.

I'd recommend watching "The Virtuous Queen of Han" after SOTD if you haven't seen it yet. I won't spoil anything for you since one is based on a novel and the other is following the actual history closely.

I thought Cruel City was a great drama! It'll get better so I hope you'll stick with it.

So ... where does on go to get the ubiquitous Kdrama bad guy black cap ... also used by good guys trying to be nonchalant while going under-cover.

Also, if ever I go to South Korea, I'm going to drive a big white moving van and see if anyone will just walk out in front of me.

Everyone in Korea knows that to remain totally unseen you have to wear all black, preferably with a black mask and cap. Sunglasses optional. This works even in broad daylight.

Halt: Producers, Mask. I'll read recaps of the last 2 episodes before deciding to watch. I'm not interested if it's filled with KSH's fanservice. I'll watch Mask when JJH's craziness is back & Soo Ae's being badass.
Drop: High Society. The directing doesn't do it for me. Also the acting. I'm watching it thinking how there are so so so many actors that can portray the leads (esp 1st) better.
Watch: I mainly watch varieties nowadays. Just found 1 night 2 days season 3 and it's funny and interesting. I luuuurv the teachers special! It's so funny and touching. The newest episode with female friends is also funny, esp when Yoo PD acted cute in front of Park Bo Young.
Have a nice day beanies!

Finally on the OT before 9pm Pacific Time! Miracles do happen.
Actually no miracle, just still recovering from surgery: so no going to work for 2 more weeks. You would think I have lots of free time to watch Kdrama, but what I really do is sleep. Lots and lots of sleep.

Thanks for the list above of favorite K- and J-dramas. Once I'm done with IHITTG, I'll try some of them. Somehow I missed Gaksital, so will have to try it.

Thanks to windsun33 who helped me with my Roku player related problems last week. I am now able to watch Dramafever on my bigscreen. Sure helps with the squinty wrinkles and sore neck I got from watching on my computer!

Hi beanies!

This week's agenda has been finishing a bunch of drama's I've put on hold or somehow just never finished. Right now I'm working through Liar Game (kversion, I've seen the jdrama). Somehow I never got into it, maybe because I didn't enjoy the games as much as the Jversion but now that I've made it to episode 9 - the little plot twist with our creepy character has got me back into it!

My list of unfinished business includes - Protect the Boss, Fall for Innocence (dropped it at episode 12, no clue why), Punch (only got to episode 2!?).

So what category are people in? Do you watch a drama through the end even if you aren't into it just for the sake of finishing? Or do you drop it and never look back?

I hate not finishing things, I'll finish a bad book or a bad movie but I find with kdramas, especially after 9 years of watching them, I'm so done with a drama if I'm not into it the first 2 episodes, so trying to remediate that haha

Hi Kay,

Because dramas take many hours, if I'm not sure about a drama that's already completed or almost completed, and if there are no recaps or reviews... I jump in at Episode 4 generally to see what I can gather. If the mains are good together and the relationships are interesting, I'll go either direction ie, start from the beginning or go forward from there. I choose Ep 4 because I believe that enough has happened in the earlier episodes to get those characters either into love or hate relationships that will be playing out.

If a show is just airing, I may give up after 2-4 episodes as well, rather than invest too many hours into it. :)

In a rare case like Ex-girlfriends' Club, I gave up at Ep 2, tried it again later from 3-5 and found that it had improved, so I finished it. But seldom do I go back if I give up on a show.

That's an interesting way of watching! Maybe I should try that! Funny you mention Ex-Girlfriend's Club because I dropped it at episode 2 as well but I wonder if I go back and might like it.

I have a lot of trouble dropping kdramas fully. I actually have a list of all the dramas on "hold" and every now and then I pick one to work on and complete. It's getting pretty bad right now that because I'm in the middle of a lot of curently airing ones, but I'm not that into most of them so I'm starting to get behind. Must finish! Ugh.

I also hate dropping books.

But I don't really count the dramas it's it's only the first 1-2 episodes. But by episode 4 it goes on my list.

I've been watching Mask these days. The female lead really gets on my nerve. I understand her reason perfectly fine, so i think it's because of the lead actress's portrayal of JS. Her face is so annoying to see everytime she cries. Give me the JS fron the first 4 eps back. The romance doesn't impressed me either.
The only reason i'm continuing to watch is curiosity. Will keep reading recaps to see how the plot goes.

Better late than never, right? This week was so tiring and days felt like years. Lol. I've been falling asleep while trying to watch dramas.

I haven't watched the latest ep of Crime Scene. YET. So I'll skip that one. I was distracted by The Heir(a novel that I would've hated if I didn't find it interesting).

School 2015 - Oh well. I'll be here in the corner singing, I wanna reset...I wanna reset

White Christmas - Speaking of corners(and monsters :)). I can't count how many times I've fallen asleep while watching this. My body can't keep up.

My Love Eun Dong - I was considering rewatching QIHM but I clicked this on a whim. I had no idea who was in it and what the story was. All I knew was that it involves first loves and that didn't seem appealing to me. So I was so surprised when I fell in love with this show. I love every couple though I love the 20's the most(partly because of the actors and mostly because there are less complications *cough* husband...age difference*cough). My heart melted in the umbrella scene and it's now breaking for the longing part. I can't see a happy ending right now but I hope I'm wrong.

Melody of Love - Why am I even watching this?? Oh right. BAEK. SUNG. HYUN.

About My Love Eun Dong
I was watching the latest episode and it struck me that this OTP is one of the most accident prone LOL!

He hits her with his bike (so they meet), she hits him with hers (so that they meet again), she keeps falling off bikes and then she has the accident that gives her amnesia (so they are separated), an accident disables the husband (so she is tied down and will feel guilt). What we need is another accident that knocks her memories loose for her so that she can recall her past, :D after all since the plot depends on accidents so much, might as well use one more to bring about a memory return... only seems fair LOL!
