hi!

I had a weeks´ hiatus, because I was on the Hanseatic Days in Viljandi. Well, mostly just working in the garden. Felt like a pointless battle with weeds. Plants are stronger than humans, they just take over. I always wonder how quickly would plants cover the whole planet if we disappeared? Since I felt pretty hopeless that I can ever beat that Green Legion, I decided to treat one spot behind the fence as an experiment: one plant paves the way to another, leaves nutrients in the soil, then new ones appear that benefit from it. I will try and see how many different plants grow on that square meter by the end of summer.

Anyway, once in a while I sneaked into my aunts´ computer, only to stumble on the news of Ninja Teachers´ fall and fractured nose! Waaah! Why? so I tweeted him a spell we use here to blow away pain: varesele valu, harakale haigus, Õpetaja nina saagu terveks! aka pain to the crows, sickness to the magpies, Teachers´ nose will get well! Do you know any good spells to take away pain?

Watched: a couple episodes of Warm and cozy. Still can´t quite tell what the drama is about. Feels like it needs some de-weeding as well. Can´t see what is growing there, the main point is surrounded by so much "green mass"
Read re-caps for School 2015. That´s all.

I am curious, so many actors and singers are setting up their own agencies, is it what we would call "free-lancing", kind of? Representing themselves, finding jobs on their own terms? No wonder a lot of them face difficulties, being a freelance is no joke. Like some actors who leave theater troupes and start a one-man career. Often end up as stand-up comedians though... what are the pluses and minuses of setting up your own "agency"? and who has been the most successful in it?

oh, btw: there was an article in an Estonian newspaper about Lotte World (because we have a anthropomorphic dog-girl character named Lotte and also a theme park dedicated to this character, so a funny similarity in names, though a totally different thing). But great to see the interest towards South Korean entertainment industry rising here, even just a little.

The soundtrack for my post in honor of all the thousands of poppies I pulled out from the garden (cause there are TOO many, though I am sorry I had to "kill" them), is Svjata Vatra song "Mak" (poppie in ukrainian)

Hi superfox,
Maybe a group of idols like the 5 who went to India (Exciting India, 4 episodes on KBS) could visit Estonia. The idols were shocked that there were no K-pop CDs in a huge music store. They weren't even recognized at a huge public square, only one or two people realized they were idols (even with a filming entourage in tow). What 5 idols would you pick to tour Estonia and make their mark with Korean Entertainment?
here's episode 1 ~

I heard though that Exciting India was a bit staged to create that disparity and the managers were actually chasing away fans in some scenes so they wouldn't appear on camera and that it would look like nobody recognized them. I mean, I don't think they're big in India but still...

Oh, boo, well - staged, I guess that's just the way these shows are, and the guys were a bit presumptuous , niave, and unprepared. Felt kinda like a freshman college trip with a little assignment, "How I spent my vacation in India" sort of thing. Like I always say, Korean variety is random and strangely edited, in this case - perhaps too forced.

Happy Friday Beanies! Summer is definitely here, and that’s a probably good thing because I’m getting increasingly jaded with kdramas right now. I’m thinking I may need to take a break when some of these wrap up. I’m just starting to feel frustrated with the writing overall and am wondering if there will ever be a show whose ending is as good as its beginning.

Hwajung Honestly, this is the show I’m enjoying the most right now which is very surprising for me. I’m completely caught up. (Spoilers ahead, in case it’s not obvious). Ooooh, mystery flower boy – I hope you’re who I think you are! It would be terribly unrealistic but right now I don’t care. Have a 5urprise reunion please! Also I’m so happy that the biggest secret is out to all the biggest players in this game – and it’s not even halfway through the show! While it’s hard I think for sageuks to be terribly original, I admit that I’m never quite sure what direction the show is going to go and it’s definitely keeping me hooked. Even with ten billion misunderstandings, it’s more fun than annoying. And I still think there’s nothing very evil about the king beyond the action of killing the young prince…which is pretty awful but frankly pretty common among nobility. I think they’ve done an amazing job of showing that his position is a lose-lose one and that he’s a thoughtful king with defined goals.

Missing Noir M Ah, how is it over? I do hope for a sequel but I think the shows intention were pretty set on showing the more grim side of life and the corruption within it. I liked this show a lot but the last episode felt the weakest to me and too contrived to make their points very poignant fir me. Our main character with a past…we’re supposed to believe that guy killed our lead's entire family because he believed the one brother killed his family? And that he has no clue who was behind it even though he clearly called someone and checked in saying that the dead was done when we were shown the flashback several episodes before? And why did our stoic lead not tell our desperate long-haired ahjussi who had actually taken his wife? I would think that would be a vital piece in stopping him from killing the wrong person and sending them all under. I found that super frustrating.

Prince’s Prince Started this because I actually really enjoy having at least one ‘short’ drama on my viewing list. Sometimes nothing beats episodes under ten minutes. I honestly read nothing about this show and had no idea what it was about…and it’s still a bit confusing? I felt like they made some big jumps between episodes even though I’m only three episodes in. But yay for more FT Island members getting attention?

Warm & Cozy I’m only through episode nine. I’m super annoyed with GW as usual. There are some nice things about this show but the main plot is not one of them.

Hwajung;Agree with what you said. the only thing that I would like to add is Lee Yeon Hee just cannot act. Her expression in this role is very limited. Seo kang Joon looks better compared to her and he is rather a newbie with limited acting chops. I literally cringe myself in front of her scenes. But the backstory is interesting. The Prince has a good insight in politics and he is indeed smart but he is in the situation where he cannot win without a sacrifice.

Haha, the first scene Seo Kang-joon and Lee Yeon-hee had together is the scene I quit the show. The back story with Gwanghae was great and Cha Seung-won was really delivering, though. I wish the whole show had been about him.

I knoooow. All my favorite old men are in it, too. I was really disappointed, though--I was one of those people who'd thought Lee Yeon-hee had turned things around with Miss Korea. I'm flirting with a couple of classic sageuk right now, but maybe I'll come back to it?

0

It was the fear of all those misunderstandings that made me give up on Hwajong...and the cross-dressing. My patience with that trope is waning. I'm missing sajeuk right now though.. so am holding on until Scholar. Was tempted to watch Orange Marmalade just for the historical bits.

Required fields are marked *

The misunderstandings though are pretty much all political ones and I feel like that's relatively accurate. Politics are ao much about deception an half-truths that it makes sense that there would be so much misinformation. I'm much more aggravate with misunderstandings in modern kdramas because I feel like there's really no reason why they can't be straight forward or clear things up. The cross dressing is what it is - have you gotten to where she returns to Korea? Let's just say that we aren't the only ones who think it's dumb nobody can tell she's a girl. The cross dressing for me though is pretty negligible. There's so much other stuff going on to pay attention to...and it's really hard to create dynamic female characters in sageuks when they're constricted by that era's gender roles. I'm looking forward to Scholar but I doubt that's going be very historical beyond the clothing.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

It's the false prolonging of suspense that gets me. In modern and historicals. But the cross-dressing bit gets so ridiculous. "Shine brightly" was the sajeuk that put me over the edge with cross-dressing as a means of stupidly stretching out the suspense. I would just watch and my mouth would hang open in disbelief...until hubby came and gently closed it.

Ah, Scholar... so you mean they won't be historical about the Joseon vampires? ;-)

Required fields are marked *

Lol, well they can blend in vampires with historical settings well. I think Anne Rice actually writes her vampires into some pretty interesting historical places (books, not the movies). But I more meant that Schokarvin my mind is more of a webtoon than anything which usually translates for me as to being pretty surreal (even when just with humans). We shall see thoyg. I'm excited no matter what.

I stopped Shine in the middle. At some point I will go back. I definitely understand how ridiculous it is. While there are some individual moments that play out the hidden gender card, it really didn't feel like that big of an issue later as the show has so many other plots it focused on. Cross dressing here feels more like a means to an end then to create suspense. Also at episode 18, all the major characters know.

Regarding Hwajung, I'm many episodes behind where you're at, I'm already kind of hooked on it. ....... I agree with you that the king is not really evil. Circumstances are forcing him to act accordingly. He's having to make choices of going in a direction he didn't want to go in or doing things that will only reinforce whatever bad idea others had of him already. He's in a no-win situation.

Regarding the killing of the prince, I'm only up to ep 6 and I saw the dead boy's hand (or supposedly his hand). Did I miss something, because I immediately thought the king didn't do (although I know it's what it looks like) ..... I thought it was someone sent by Lord Yi and/or the palace lady he's been working with.

Required fields are marked *

Well a lot of politics has gone on since episode six so I don't remember specfific scenes. From what I remember, he basically approves for the prince to be 'taken care of'. He doesn't do it himself but it was the idea behind the prince being sent if in exile on his own - easy to get rid of. However, the parties in charge of this go above and beyond by trying to take care of more than just the prince which is not something he consented to. The king was basically faced with the fact that dissenters would continue to attempt coups until the prince was put in the thrown and he felt he had no choice but to kill him if he ever wanted any stability for the crown.

4D -

Yes, I did get the part where he agreed to the prince being exiled, but I understood it to be for the prince's protection (as the king had promised the princess and her mother that he wouldn't harm them). ..... However, the palace operatives took it upon themselves to kill both the prince and princess. Upon finding this out, the king was livid.

This is what I've concluded so far, up to where I've watched.

There's sort if a lot of double talk and hidden meanings. He made that promise early on to keep the prince but is basically forced to break it. It becomes a bit if a theme in the show - his goal is to protect the throne and everything else comes second. They stated publicly thatvitcwas for the prince's protection but I felt certain scenes and reactions made it obvious that people knew this was not the case. Being removed from his whole family was not to his benefit.

Again it's hard because my memory is not 190% on which scenes are when. However, his minions go after a second person which he didn't approve. The difference in reaction you see will I think show you that he clearly was expecting the prince but was very upset by them going against his wishes for person #2. (I'm hoping that is not a spoiler line that I crossed)

Re: Hwajung (though a bit of an off-topic)

From my superficial understanding of Korean history, in all of the 600+ years of the Joseon Era, their greatest achieving king turns out to be Sejong the Great, whose father had his in-laws executed on fabricated charges before Sejong even sat on the throne. I wonder what that says about Joseon kings' powers.

Required fields are marked *

I'd half to say that a lot of dynasties work that way, especially ones with concubines. There are just too many potential heirs and I think for the sake of stability you really need to not have much competition. Countries all over have stories like that - what about England and the princes in the tower? Rulers are pretty ruthless or they're overthrown quickly.

0

Required fields are marked *

IMO it doesn't say much about the royal family, so much as the court system. There was a reason Taejong killed his in-laws. With the aristocracy under his thumb (and his father to do the dirty work), and only with those things, Sejong was able to accomplish great things. Sadly, Joseon's history after Sejong tells us all we need to know. From my (limited) understanding, Sejo's coup crippled the throne, creating a dangerous precedent whereby nobles could find just cause to make their own king, and Yeonsangun's dethronement finished it off completely. The reason Gwanghaegun was thrown out was because he tried to wield his authority and the nobles didn't like that very much.

All the while, the nobles took more and more land, became wealthier and wealthier, and noble clans like the Kims of Andong that became in-laws with the royal family ended up ruling the country while the king was nothing more than a puppet. Add to that intense factionalism and the potent mixture of Confucian pedagoguery and a murky legal system, the only way the king could gain any modicum of control, or get anything done for the people (ultimately his source of legitimacy and power) was pick a side and purge the other party. This is why Joseon was unable to accomplish substantial reform in over 500 years of history; why it made few technological advancements; why its military remained weak and insubstantial; why the peasant class saw little to no relief from its abject poverty/starvation condtions...

Sorry for the lecture lol. When people start talking history on here I can get a little too excited...

Producer I still feel awful for manager oppa. I wish they would bring back more meta moments. I like the actors but this is feeling pretty run-of-the-mill for me.

School 2015 Still watching but the plot is getting to me. After the overhyped drama around Soo In’s death, I feel like Eun Byul’s return is just as frustrating in how it’s handled. I find all the romantic possibilities to be rather problematic as well, but I went into this show for the plot potential and character growth but it hasn’t really happened for me. Happy though that this show has done so much for Sungjae.

Orange Marmalade Well, it basically feels like this started over so I’m not sure how to react. I did like this episode, and at least we’re back to the pacing of the first two episodes, but that’s only making me worried for what’s to come. I'm still liking most if the actors.

The Lover I know it’s awful but…I don’t even remember episode 9? I know I watched it. And episode 10 looks like it has about two minutes of JJ/Tak and it was pretty much all shown in the previews last week. The one couple that’s been together for so long is the only one that really feels real to me.

----
Other thoughts:

I feel awful for the entire cast of ‘Scholar’, such awful luck. I wish Lee Jun Ki and Lee Yubi quick and full recoveries. This is definitely one of the shows I was looking forward to the most but I want everyone to be safe first and foremost.

I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch the newest episode of Murphy’s Law of Love because the melo is clearly about to start. I really don’t want there to be a split between the leads. Is there ever going to be a show where the couple just stays together and trusts each other and weathers through everything as a team? No? I suppose not.

Can anyone suggest a light and fluffy drama for summer? Something with minimal angst and preferably no noble idiocy or amnesia?

If you want a break down, the first half is funny and flirty with a dash of manga-esque ridiculousness (in a good way!) and the second half a little more heart warming, if a bit frustrating because of the requisite melo-angst acidity in order for a lasting sweet ending.

In short, it's very slice-of-life and character-driven, peppered with zany.

Mmmm, I can't get into the ex at all. It really makes no sense to just disappear on someone for an entire year and think they'd wait. Obviously that person thinks you left them. You gave no indication of coming back. Why would you expect someone to waste their life waiting for someone they think left them? There's nothing adult-like that. In fact it seems very childish to me the idea of a woman thinking people will just always be around and wait for them no matter what. And if you can trust or handle someone to be around you when you're at your worst (the accident) then that's really not the person you should be with for life.

Yeah Guan Xiao Tong is rather infantalized like so many heroine leads, but she's been honest and straight forward in everything. And while she overdoes it, she puts him first a lot of the time and appreciates what he does for her.

"Happy though that this show has done so much for Sungjae."

I'm very happy for him too! He is so popular now! I was watching him for the first time, and he won me over with TK :) :) I love KSH's acting too btw. It's sad that the show missed so many good side stories to pursue the romance.

I read your post about YD and TK in the recap of episode 13. I tried to post it there but it didn't come up I think. I agree that TK is more well-rounded than YD is. He is a whole lot less violent and is not a bully. Plus he knows how to be there for the girl he loves in the right way. Poor YD had all the wrong wooing strategies. Lol.

One thing though that I liked in The Heirs was that the writer gave YD closure in ES's matter before the drama ended. So we got to see him letting go of her and trying to work on other things.

Planning on starting Missing Noir M.

I always liked Sungjae's personality - reminded me a lot of one of my high school friends, so I'm glad he's really done well with this role. I hope it also helps BtoB overall. I'd never seen him act before this either, and reviews were kind of meh on his acting in Plus Nine Boys so I heard. But he's great in this. I enjoy KSH too, but I do find Eun Bi overly passive for me to really get into her character.

Oh yeah, YD in Heirs was a mess. He did everything wrong. I mean, I found Kim Tan to be a bore, but that didn't mean I thought YD would be any better of a boyfriend even if I did like the character more. Of course a big part of that is just Kim Woo Bin's charisma.

TK though it just a much more aware and caring person and while he has his faults, they're mostly things that hurt himself instead of those around him.

Missing Noir M has some really great episodes, please share your thoughts once you've watched!

Happy OT beanies.. :-)

-CRIME SCENE S2: As expected, murder case that involving corruption is always messy and confusing. Aside from that, the victim's background story reminds me of "Secret" with reverse role. And how witty is the prod team to use Soonjung/Innocence as one of the suspect's name (glancing at Falling for Innocence)? Next week case seems like come straight out from horror movie, have to make sure I watch it in broad daylight.

-EX GIRLFRIEND CLUB: I love it when Myungsoo behave like a spoiled child and Soojin play along, feed and nurture him, to his webtoon friend's annoyance. And how I feel embarrassed, cringing for their first a-little-awkward-night together. Now, I just want HwaYoung to get her happy marriage and for Rara to succeed in seducing the director. Give the girl a chance, director. She is a really nice girl (and maybe the one that you just need).

-MASK: Finally Minwoo step up the game. I love it that he get to do that partly (or mostly?) because of Jisook. I want the truth to be revealed early. Because honestly, Minwoo won't lost anything even if he knows that. The person that he truly cares about is Jisook. And beside, she also doesn't have any agenda to ruin him. Their true partnership will definitely bring doom toward his evil family.

I think i rarely speak to God these days, that is why my heart feel so much doubt and confusion. So, yeah, God is the only answer I guess..

Anyway, thank you for the awsome recaps: School 2015, Warm and Cozy, and Producers! I enjoy it soo much!

Take care!

Has anyone watched Sense8 on netflix? It is 12 episodes long. Lots of same-sex sex, at least for me, butt the premise is interesting and the cinematography is awesome.

Hi Everyone!

OT time once again! ....... I hope you are all doing well today.

So I found out yesterday that about a year ago, a Kpop moment occurred just a couple of miles away from my house! ....... Apparently the EXO guys came by to a local shopping center. It's the shopping center where I purchased soju a couple of weeks ago. ....... I'm guessing that they stopped by for a meal or for some shopping as there are plenty of shops and restaurants in the center. ....... I hope they had a good time.

Watched this week:

Angry Mom - 2 more episodes to go! ....... Really a very good drama. Oh those baddies!

Hwajeong - Barely on ep 6, but oh what an unexpected reveal! Seriously didn't see that coming this soon.

Girl Who Sees Smells - Finally finished watching the first drama I've watched, for only 10 minutes per episode. Namgoong Min had me tuning in just to see what he was up to. He certainly played creepy quite well!

Divorce Lawyer In Love - Unfortunate to see the 2nd female lead fall into the all-too-familiar 2nd lead territory of disgruntled friend-in-love with male lead. Especially with the info she just uncovered, as a lawyer, at the request of her friend, the male lead. Now, not only is she coming across as a sore loser and bad friend, but as a lawyer, she's unprofessional. So, failing on three fronts. ....... I'll still tune in though, because it's not like I hate the drama or anything like that.

Mask - Given all the positive comments about it, I had to check out the first couple of minutes of this. I just didn't have time to watch the whole thing, but oh my goodness!! I think I'm going to like this one! ....... Between the dramas that ended and/or are finishing up, I'll have more time, perhaps next week, to start watching full episodes of this.

That's about it for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

That's a fun little tidbit about EXO. I live in the city so it's fun when actors/idols post Instagram shots and I realize they must be nearby. Also we get the occasional concert! Big Bang is actually having a show here (well, near here) on my birthday!! I really wish I could swing it but I dint think I can. Still, it's fun to think about.

Namgoong is so much fun in GWSS! I've seen him play creepy before (intentionally as a misdirection) and he excels at. He clearly enjoyed it too and posted so many snippets and pictures on Instagram.

Namgoong Min does excel in that type of role indeed. He can certainly pull off coming across as super serious and/or unstable, with an inner torment of some sort. He does a minimum of movement, but he captures the moment and transmits the right essence, if that makes any sense.

Happy OT!!!

Wrote my finals on Monday. On one hand I am so thrilled to be done with medical school??. On the other hand, I AM FREAKING OUT!!?? and getting nervous and also excited as the days inch closer to my graduation day which is in 2weeks. I have to leave my bubble and go into the real world. I keep asking myself if I am prepared for this next stage in my life. Lol my soul is not ready?

On the dramaland front, I am not watching anything. Are any of the recent batch of dramas any good??

Have a nice weekend all!!

Let's talk music ....

Kpop is just not for me ... I'll turn down the volume and watch the girls dance ... sure ... but the whole Kpop scene is just another manufacture entertainment consumer driven monster ...

Now ... Korean Indie music is pretty damn awesome ... I stumbled on to it by accident and instantly fell in love with it ... it just seems to be more "honest" to me.

And being a child of the 80's, I'm a metal head at heart and I'm a little disappointed at the lack of metal and hard rock in Korea ... that said ... there's a real growth of hard rock in Japan that I'm really digging.

There is just so much on Spotify that it can be overwhelming. A lot of people make playlists, so perhaps start with searching for "top 100 xxx".

I have my own playlists, but I have some pretty odd tastes - they consist of everything from Korean 70's Folk-Rock, modern Mando-pop, 70's to current US/Euro pop and rock, etc.

What k-indie are you listening too? I got some albums from Cranfield (Loooove), Monoban and Jambinai recently, but wouldn't mind more.

I've got all NELL, Mot and Zitten already...

How about J-rock? I love ONE OK ROCK, but I'm not even sure I know any other J-rock. Love Tokumaru Shugo as well, but I wouldn't even know what to classify him as other than genius! Anyhow, if you have got recommendations, I'm all ears.

One Ok Rock's Taka is a very good vocalist. His parents are very famous Japanese singers. His brother's band( My First Story) is also good though some complain that his bro's band is very much like OKR.
Radwimps is interesting though they are not categorized as a rock band. Their Japanese lyrics is brilliant with tons of word plays, for example Oshakasama( Buddha) and DADA.
My son likes Maximum the Hormone a lot.

I'll have a look at all of them. I've never systematically explored J and K music, so I only stumble across things when people recommend them (or when, with Tokumaru Shugo, when a photograph catches my attention). Or films sometimes (which was the case with ONE OK ROCK but also Galileo Galilei).

Didn't even know Taka had more family in singing. I'm just always impressed by his English in songs.

Take a look see at Doll$Box (and Gacharic Spin) one of the cutest and most bad ass Bassist in rock.

X is old school Japanese metal and so is Show-Ya, Pink Saphire is a little more pop-ish but no less talented.

Light Bringer is what I would call Melo-Metal ... listen to them and you'll see why.

Wagakki Band is my current fav on the ipod ... the best part? They do Anime covers ... how is that not awesome?

There's got to be Korean metal and hard rock bands right?

I heard the vocalist, Noda, debut as an actor( lead actor) in the movie called' Toire no Pieta' ( Pieta in a toilet). The movie does not have a good review but many think he was very good in the role.
I also heard the inteview( chat) with Taka and Noda together and Noda said that he really dislikes his voice so that he wished someone else could sing their songs! Even Taka from One Ok Rock is not satisfied with his own voice much. Oy! If I could sing as good as them, I would be in heaven!

Hello Beanies!

Can anyone recommend a nice kdrama with a fantasy element? I'm looking for something like those I loved, 49 Days, MGIAG, the first 2 eps of Gu Family Book or even Rooftop Prince.

I'm already watching Orange Marmalade. I tried Blood but it was too bad.:) The mermaid and the angel in recent dramas also disappointed, I dislike when supernatural creatures turn out to be Candies, there are enough of them already in all other dramas. Bride of The Century was nice for the first half too. Nightwatchmen was a mess I still have to finish. On second thought maybe I already tried all of the fantasy dramas?

Yes, Arang! I loved Shin Min Ah as the ghost. Nice OTP, the drama itself I didn't like so much but it had great moments. :)

0

Or if you want to watch some Japanese ones:

Long Love Letter: okay, not sure if this counts, it's more like something unexplainable happens, it's otherwordly (and never explained) but the rest of the drama is more utopian than fantasy. Kubozuka Yosuke is one of the leads, he's actually really quite good but sort of disappeared from the acting scene for quite a long while because it seems in real life he's a bit of a baka. A very young and cute Tsumabuki Satoshi has a supporting real in this too.
xxxHolic – This is awesome. And fab cast (Sometani Shota, Higashide Masahiro, Anne). I think this might fit your "fantasy" description best. It's just 8 episodes though :-(
SPEC ~ First Blood: Again, not sure if this counts but it's a sort of crime drama with lots of supernatural elements (strange things happen, people have supernatural powers).
Yokai Ningen Bem: This is quite heartwarming. It's about three monsters that generally take a human form to tried their true identity.

0

If you do watch SPEC, be warned there are several seasons and films. Also prep yourself with a plate of gyozas. Forgot to say that the cast includes one of my absolute favourite Japanese actors – Kase Ryo (who does mostly film).

Me too - while there is an occasional good/original k-pop song, most of it just seems highly manufactured. But honestly not sure that the music situation in the rest of the world is much better with all the synthesized techno-pop.

I wonder if there has ever been a k-pop song that does not have tons of choreographed dancing and jumping, aside from a couple of Lee Hi's songs?

I find some K-pop videos fascinating because they are so over the top – Big Bang's Fantastic Baby is brilliant IMO – but with the music... I listen to an album and after a while all the songs start sounding the same....

0

Required fields are marked *

That sameness is my major problem with most k-pop. Just recently I was watching a YouTube video about this months top 50 k-pop, and with a very few exceptions they were just like having the same song with different words on endless repeat. Even much of the choreography is the same.

0

Required fields are marked *

Because Kpop is such an industry and formula driven field, it's impossible to truely stand out. They even sort of all look the same after a while.

For sure the same problem exists in other countries too where manufacture pop groups are present ... but I think Korea does it to extremes.

0

My son who listens to almost all genre music told me that he does not listen to K pop because his roommates was listening to Big Bang's Fantastic Baby non stop. He really was fed up with the song. He found that the music is so formulated with repeated lyric so that the music somehow get stuck in his head but other than that, nothing in particular is unique.( sorry for the Big Bang fans) His comment applies to most K pop songs but I personally like some of Beast songs.

I sometimes spend my time to watch K pop on Youtube with my daughter... we critique their hair styles and fashion. There is always a member or two who either have a bad hair style or bad fashion( or the combination of those),,,

Having said that I prefer K pop to J pop generally speaking. K pop band tend to sing better than J pop. I prefer K pop to One Direction,,, at least Kpop idols can dance,,, One Direction members only skip when they sing!!

0

I'm new into Bigbang but I appreciate them for making their own music (well only GD&TOP but at least they have their own color) and they're fantastic performers with 5 different vocal & dancing styles. Fantastic Baby is overplayed but their other songs are as good. Tonight & Lies are good, and I personally like their current album.
And TOP is hot. Okay. I just need to add that.

Required fields are marked *

I like Big Bang but like any group, having their own sound will start to make their own songs fairly similar to each other. I know they're pretty much on top of the kpop world and so will sell lots of copies but even in this comeback some of their hits I think are rather weak. However, I do like them and appreciate the work they put into everything.

For me a lot of the kpop works best when it's seen. Yes people can comment that every single one has a dance number but they're performers not (usually) musicians. More and more are composing their own songs so that's a plus. But I don't think that dancing and singing should be valued less than singing and playing an instrument. It's fine to not like the music...in general I really like pop (as well as other genres) so I'm used to people making comments about it to me.

But I find some of the songs really only grab me once I see them live. The songs can definitely feel overproduced on the records but certain groups when they perform on stage really give the songs an entirely different dimension.

And yeah, I'm a sucker for dance. I miss dancing.

0

I enjoy k-pop offerings too (not so much j-pop). What can I say, I'm a sucker with a sweet tooth?

My confession this week: I'm hooked on KARA's "Cupid" (cos of Heo Young Ji from the Roommate show). Their live dance really highlights the choreography much better than the MV.

Same for Big Bang's Taeyang - I never knew he existed until his amazing dance video with Ringa Linga. Now I'm a fan. Not to mention, they were completely awesome on Running Man and Happy Together last week! (and TOP never lost his cool.)

0

I quite recently have discovered this little gem. It's more like a fabulous version of k-bossa nova (oh, my God...I can't believe I wrote that!) https://youtu.be/-KTajNq2BKY
I'm so open for any suggestions but k-pop.

I know there's a sub-post detour on 12.2 below, but anyway here are my offerings:

J-Rock:
cutman-booche
Elephant Kashimashi
Quruli (for somehing a bit different. They also have a female drummer)
GReeeeN
LOST IN TIME (dunno if they're still going)
Bump of Chicken
Arukara

Random rock talk - if we're talking J rock, I wanted to mention Momoe Yamaguchi: she's a blast from the past, but she's as edgy and sexy as any of the idols today:
Rock 'n' Roll Widow, Playback Part 2, Zettai zetsumei

Other genres/artists I really like:
Ohashi Trio, Curly Giraffe, Suga Shikao, Sukima Switch (gone more mainstream, but their early stuff has a zany disco/ballad feel)

For K-rock, I can't go past my FT Island boys, and Royal Pirates (though they might be more pop than rock?)

I'm really more of a pop/indie girl, so I can't explain what house is, or tell the difference between rave/trance or R&B/hip-hop to save my life. That said, here's a few of my fave k-indie artists:

Standing Egg
Acoustic Collabo
Coffee Boy
Epitone Project
Lemon Tree
Low-End Project
Vanilla Acoustic
Thomas Cook

What can I say except is the only seriously good drama right now.so good that I stayed awake till 3&m waiting for episode 6 subs and I always feel like Rewatching each episode when I'm done.
Other than that I'm considering watching Orange is the new black because people are raving about it, any beanie watching it, can you please tell me if it has sex scenes and profanity, so I can stay clear of it.
Also considering a grain free diet which looks impossible but apparently grains are bad for you, didn't know that.dunno how I'm going to get over my pancake addiction.so...

Word on the street is: Orange is the New Black has sex scenes. Both lesbian and hetero. sigh.
I have been watching Sense8 on netflix and it is also rife with sex scenes. Sat next to my grown daughter last night watching sense8 and a sex scene came on. again~sigh~

I am not a prude but Really? Must I watch this? Was it necessary to add this to the story? I think not.

On and then there was a whole series of childbirth~childbirth scenes rub me the wrong way. I find no dramatic or story-telling merit in showing a woman grunting, groaning and sweating to push a child out.

Why would grains be bad for you? People have been eating them for thousands of years.

Orange is R rated I believe, so yes it has all that. Personally, though I kind of liked the first season, after that it started getting somewhat repetitious.

Required fields are marked *

Eh, grains aren't bad per se. It's just that people tend to unknowingly eat a lot of the same thing (like a slice of white bread vs wholemeal) and carbohydrates are basically the first thing in and out of the body. Next choice out are proteins, where the body burns more in order to produce the same amount of energy as grains do. Last is stored fat. So for a person who wants to increase his "out-of-the-body" rate, the best is not to eat refined grains so that stored proteins and fats are used up instead. Although wholemeal grains are a different story.

As always, food fads and mis-information.

As usual, life demands balance and humans are misappropriating causes with consequences while searching for shortcuts.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I read a recent article about fads, and they noted that food fads outnumber almost all other fads combined by a huge percentage. They also noted that nearly all fads are based on really bad information, zero science, and quite often just outright BS, like the Paleo diet craze. The same article noted that diet books have for decades been one of the best selling genre in books, even though 90% of them give tons of really bad advice.

I even see faddism in k-dramas, like in how often "organic" is mentioned (though some of that is due to getting paid endorsements from the organic industry), folk herbs and medicine, and the like.

That said, season one is pretty entertaining because the format lays out the backstory for characters-- ie why they got sent to prison. You could skip past the sex, but will not be able to avoid profanity.

Hello all:

I had the best time ever with a visit from Julia of the Berkshires. Such fun. She fed me a ssam! Yeah.. Korean Barbeque. Then we went to a Korean market and I bought rice cakes and japchae. I'm now eating pigeon pea soup with rice cakes thrown in.

Last weekend, i had tons of fun at the races. Won lots. On an accidental bet. Other than that..am trying to commit to eating waaaay naturally and to juicing. And I shall be attempting to make kefir.

Dramas:

Producers. I feel sorry for Cindy but I'm also not liking her intrusiveness. It's partly because I hate when kdrama heroines just barge into someone's life because of looooooooooove. It's not as physically violent as the wrist grab but it's just as intrusive and imposing. And my worst fears is that she will "win" our guy over because of that. Aish..so upset and Cindy and newbie better not be the main OTP.

Mask. Ah me! I am so hooked on this. Because..well.. the villain is such a control freak and so always on the verge of losing control of himself. OF course he's gonna fall in love with our heroine..and how will he handle that? I totally loved his panic when he felt his plans were going awry. Hoping suffering doppelganger wil get a backbone soon. Sure she's depressed but... And am not liking the idea of the loan shark finding out the truth and doing some backmailing. But who knows? He might be an equal to the big bad bro-in-law.

High Society. I've never "gotten" Sung Joon. But I'll admit.. the look he gave to undercover chaeboless when he "noticed" her the first and second time was waaaaaaaaay sexy. I love Park Hyung Sik but wow, what did they do to his hair? It looks very Japanese cool guy anime and it doesn't work.

Awaiting Hidden Identity and Profiler and Scholar. Praying or Yubi and Joongi.

PS
Ex Girlfriend Club: I find Byun Yo-Han to be the most sexy guy on current kdramas. HE's got that accessibe boy next door vibe. And in a world of hottie detectives and angsty male leads on the verge of a nervous breakdown..well, it is very refreshing to see a sexy normal guy. All that said, I'm hoping the drama ends soon and am watching it out of some weird loyalty to BYH.

So far, we've had some good episodes interspersed with redundant, repetitive episodes and episodes where the maor plot concerned secondary characters and scenes where the women are just all obsessed with a man from their past.. and i didn't find the physical fighting over a man funny. I'll accept the relative plotlessness because the writer does seem to be enamoured of cute little love scenes. But cute little love scenes can only go so far when nothing is really happening in the MC's storyline.

I agree with you on Byun Yo Han- so sexy. Sexy normal guy. I have no idea what kind of project would be best for him next, but I kind of wish it could be something with the vibe of ExGFC without the exes. I like his styling and the bgm/OST in this drama, it makes me smile. He makes me smile. Sigh. Swoon.

Re Ex-Girlfriends' Club: Byun Yo-Han was attractive in Misaeng, even with the dorky hair parting, so I don't stand a chance in this! The role really suits Song Ji Hyo, too, and I'm really enjoying the unusual set-up, and how they're exploring the friends-lovers boundary.

I hope the Director gives Myung Soo a good run for his money and that they really get into Soo Jin's career (she's a genuinely talented lady) and how moving forwards with Myung Soo may be a backwards step for her future, and how they deal with that. I love the brother-in-law and his attempts to support Soo Jin!

I'm trying to catch up on Producers, hooked on Mask (Joo Ji Hoon = swoon), and undecided on whether to jump into High Society.

Hi! Oh wow, you and Julia did get together! I was wondering if you two would after reading the posts here last week (or was it the week before? I don't even remember at this point! Heh.) ........ How fantastic that you both had a great time!

Regarding Mask, I only caught the first 10 minutes or so of the first episode this week, but oh wow, I think I'm also going to enjoy this ride when I start watching the complete episodes.

Have a great weekend also!

Happy Friday to All!!

So I know this isn't completely kdrama/kpop related but has anyone been watching the new Netflix show "SENSE8"????

OMG! I recognized so many korean actresses and actors - well for one, Bae Doo Na is one of the main characters but part of the show takes place in Korea so we have Yeo-Jeon Yoon (awesome older actress!!) and Ma Dong Seok (from Bad Guys) was in a short scene - all of them speaking english too.
I also recognized a bunch of Indian actors/actresses since a portion of the show films in India, like Anupam Kher and Purab Kholi.

Anyway, my spaz moment of the week lol

ofcourse I'm team Tae Kwang all the way with or without any loveline I wish for him a happy ending because he deserve it. Sungjae is playing his charactor very well that I can't believe that it's hisb1st time acting .
I've started watching Orange marmalade and falling for innocence and nothing really grabbed me so I'll watch more episodes then decide if I'll ever continue watching them or not

School 2015- All I'm going to say for this week is Kim So-hyun should open her own acting school.

My Love Eun-dong- I've decided to drop this. I got 15 minutes into episode 4 and I realized that I just don't care anymore about anyone in this show. It's sad because while I didn't love the first week I liked it more than I thought I would. That being said I think my disconnection did begin last week as I realize that I felt nothing at either of Eun-dong's disappearances. I really wanted to like it because Kim Sa-rang's Secret Garden character remains one of my favorite female second leads ever.

Warm and Cozy- Eerg, Gun-woo!

Mask- This continues to be awesome, so very awesome. I hope the latest development at the end leads to Ji-sook telling Min-woo the truth so they can team up against Seok-hoon. On another note, can Yeon Jung-hoon only play villains from now on.

The Producers- Is it the weekend yet?

High Society- I fell in love after the second episode. Hopefully UEE won't be failed by the writing in two projects in a row.

Orange Marmalade- I still love it and I'm looking forward to seeing what if anything is the point of the Joseon ark.

I hope the show keeps up after the switch to the " adult" actors. 60 episodes waiting for more subs.

My comment for this week is of "musical" nature as well.
Hwajung, I love this drama. But the one and only song of the series is the worse I've heard in sageuk. They used to chose something slightly more "operatic" making the OST of the series timeless.
Warm & Cozy and Mask: though I adore both shows, what's up with Por Una Cabeza and korean dramas? There are other tangos, all of you people in charge for the soundtrack of kdramas.
PS, tvN better release the music of Ex-Girlfriends! I'm still expecting the ost of Three Musketeers.

I almost watched all of this week's kdrama

Hwajung - despite the lackluster performance from LYH, i'm really enjoying this :D and I have a pretty good guess who the faceless man is.
School 2015 - man it's almost done and I hope everyone gets a better ending (W/ or w/o anyone) minus soo young of course.
High society - cute~ ^_^ 2nd Otp, hoping for more lead interactions..
Warm & cozy - I still enjoy this circus of a show just about to watch this week's episodes
Mask - I was very reluctant to watch this at first but it ended up a 4-episode marathon once I started watching it. :D
Mask Prosecutor - I love the leads but i'm losing interest on this one.. Is this week's episodes any better than the previous ones?
Ex-GF Club - I almost drop this, but I guess 4 more episodes wont do me harm
Orange marmalade - well the Joseon episodes are good enough for me to continue watching this.
Producer - hehe I really really enjoy this show! Can't wait to watch this week's / weekend's episodes..

Happy Friday and Weekend Everyone!

Kdrama watching has been pretty decent in that there have been at least 3 shows which are worth watching, which is pretty good considering that some weeks there's nothing!

Ex-girlfriend Club - still good and interesting and Byun Yo Han just gets more and more adorable. Cutest kissy lips face!!! It's amazing though to think that in the beginning Soo Jin had no men in her life but now she seems to have 3 men wanting her. 2 because they like her and one for a warped kind of revenge... pity Hwa Jeong's ex-fiance is so vengeful and petty.

Mask - The best drama showing now!!! Wonderfully intricate characters, a plot with so much going on and so many unexpected ways to go, a pace that just right and a story that is coherent and best of all, characters we can get behind. The layered characters are so good that I cannot totally hate the baddies. There is so much more going on that I want to understand even them. Hardly anyone is 1 or just 2 dimensional, and the butler-maid couple still succeed in delivering the laughs.

And I love how in a melo, there is room for the funny and the sweet. Can't get enough of this show!

Orange Marmalade - The sageuk part gives me hope in more relationship and character development that can somehow be transferred to the present time. I'm hoping that despite the big time jump, the characters in the future present will continue from their sageuk times and have grown more. No more rewinding to start all over again, please!

My Love Eun Dong - a typical melodrama. It's going to take as much time as possible keeping our couple apart to drive viewers to distraction. I'm not sure how long I will continue to watch, because the difficult angsty parts are coming up, (guilt, and more guilt for the OTP) but if it does not lose focus, I may last the stretch.

Masked Prosecutor - I will get down to watching the latest episodes soon, I hope. It is not as strong a show as was hoped, but it's not a total loss either.

And yes Healer - Still re-watching and savoring this slowly and it's still such a joy! So much more juice can be got from this even now. The consistency and coherence in the writing, the respect for the viewer... just cannot thank the writer and production team enough for their wonderful work.

Some of us have been loving this show all this time and we've come up with a fun Healer Kdrama Awards of our own which will be open for anyone to play. I will post the link here soon. Just waiting for the confirmed link. So stay tuned if you ever watched and liked Healer and want to see what favorites parts of it you can vote on / remember / parts that we may have left out ... You can tell us what is missing or what you liked on the Healer Episode 20 recap thread (yes it's still alive) or ask us about stuff that you may have forgotten . True @windsn33 they come in at just the right time as counterpoints to some melodramatic moments and make us laugh (with relief, maybe?). :

I forgot to mention...

High Society - Very promising and intriguing. The characters don't seem to realize that they are under some misconceptions and that they are not always in tune with reality. Gotta see how this plays out!

Required fields are marked *

I liked High Society more than I thought I would.e

"characters who are not always in tune with reality" - do you think having a money cushion allows for that?

On the other hand, the mother is painfully in tune with reality; however isn't it ironic that she is so hard on her youngest for reaching for the very things she doesn't have in that household (a voice, autonomy, respect).

Grapevine pulled off a heavy, oppressive atmosphere in a way that I haven't seen done as well in any other kdrama. So far, High Society promises to address chaebol and authority issues a in a lighter way.

Required fields are marked *

Grapevine was a very unusual k-drama, perhaps that is why it did so well in the ratings. One of my favorite shows of the past couple years.

0

@ owl

About money being a cushion... being rich definitely enables a person to keep a distance from the hoi polloi. So that could be a reason for having misconceptions.

However even the not rich have strange ideas like Ji Yi saying Joon Ki must have been well brought up as he was rich and therefore would be nice and not lacking for anything. But Yoon Ha who is a chaebol's daughter lacks love, and Ji Yi knows how mean rich people can be towards her... so it's puzzlilng how she got her ideas. :)

So the only current airing drama I'm watching is school 2015 and it's slowly becoming like Lost. The show drops a ton of mystery, but the pay off is nonsensical and the plot holey to the extreme. At least the OST is good and it's ending soon.

Spoilers below for Angry Mom
So I nearly finished Angry Mom. I binged watched it over the weekend. I'm impressed with how adult/dark everything is even if it's a show about highschoolers.
Everything from the dark lighting to the jazz music to characters to the corrupt world
It also takes a premises. " Noir world in High school," that Veronica Mars did excellently and makes it so I wouldn't even compare the two different beasts.
Kangja's obviously our morally ambiguous hero, with a tragic backstory. Ae-yeon takes the place as the damsel in distress. Her sexuality is used as a weapon and she betrays the heroine. And at the end their corrupt world "wins" to some extent.
I'm going to introduce Kdrama to my cousin and I've chosen healer as a jumping point. I hope it's as awesome as everybody thinks, because I haven't watched it yet. ( I want to experience it with my cousin)

I totally agree with your comments on School 2015. When shows get greenlit, I always assume they story has a strong backbone and plot outline. But then the playoffs always seem confusing and like they didn't know what to do so they came up with something. I'm starting to feel like kdrama writers need to take a class on third acts.

I really should try Angry Mom again. I only got halfway through the first episude. I think I wasn't feeling up for something with too much bullying at the time.

Yes, I have a feeling they greenlight shows based on a premise and a cast and PD and timeslot. Many kdrama shows have this weird downhill fall after 8 eps and almost none know how to finish properly.

Angry Mom wasn't really about bullying which was one of the things I disliked about it, I don't like when shows use delicate and important issues and later abandon them, becomes just a plot device, but it was still a fun show with plenty of nice characters.

Angry Mom is one of the few shows that actually starts getting better after ep 6 or so, at least for me. I ended up marathoning the last 5 episodes til like 2 AM.

For some reason I just got hooked on Goddess of Marriage on Netflix. Had avoided it before because it is so long - 36 episodes - but found it oddly addicting. But I also admit that I fast forward past a couple of the characters segments. Not the best show ever, but better than most current dramas (with the exception of Mask and one or two others).

I've been in a K-drama slump these days, since dramas just aren't the same any more. So I've just been relieving the nostalgia by listening to Misaeng and Marriage Not Dating OSTs.

And watching my favorite episode of all time - Answer Me 1997/ Reply 1997's episode 15.

I've never had a childhood friend, so I don't exactly know what YoonJae and ShiWon have, even if they are fantastically and terribly entertaining and adorable. I've never had a crush, much less been in a love triangle, so I'm just sympathetic, not empathetic. But being a sibling? As the eldest child, episode 15 got me right here. *beats at heart*

I'm not the younger one, so I've never been in YoonJae's or ShiWon's grand-uncle's position. But I understand (almost too, terribly well) how their elder brothers had felt. Almost twenty years on, and I am still so sorry that I hadn't defended my sister when someone else accused her of doing something I knew she obviously didn't do because I was an insecure, foolish kid and some idiot's (irrelevant) perception of me was so important to me. I still feel so sorry that I had technically ordered her around and essentially bullied her because I was young and stupid and being terrible. If she never met her own (new) best friend who totally transformed her into a warrior girl in her own right, I'd never forgive myself. I still feel so sorry that I put her down so many times when in fact, I was no better than her. I just had more time to practice the same things by virtue of having lived (slightly) longer. I am so sorry, and whoever hurts her now, earns my immediate wrath and must be prepared for swift and long-lasting vengeance. Nobody, and I mean NO-BODY harms my younger sisters on purpose and gets away with it. No one!

To all younger siblings, on behalf of all elder siblings, we're sorry we were jerks and we love you all. We were once stupid kids too.

I'm really missing Heard It Through the Grapevine, after Punch and Grapevine SBS' Monday-Tuesday slot is looking really underwhelming with High Society. It really does feel like your standard rinse-and-repeat melo, and after Lee Joon and Go Ah-sung, all the young leads here feel like a really weak followup (even if I find Park Hyung Shik quite likable). At least no one's outright terrible though? Or not that terrible?

Not every show can be as fresh in tone and conception as Grapevine, but after seeing 16 weeks of corporate corruption close up on that drama, High Society's chaebol machinations and the heroine's desire to hang on to the comfortable lifestyle it gives her, just seems extra weaksauce.

Let's Eat 2 - finished this one, and to my shock, I like it as much as I did Season 1. And yet this isn't a function of the story, because it got a bit circular at times. But good casting and character relationships can do a lot, and I loved everyone here (and also had a little chuckle about the Pinocchio shoutout in Lee Joo-seung's character's name). Yoon Doo-joon was born to play this role, and Seo Hyun-jin pairs perfectly with him, I love a prickly, imperfect heroine. And yay for a non-asshole hero!

School 2015 - sink all the ships, one is insipid and the other is one-sided. The only thing that matters is that Eun-byul is back! And she is the best person to defend Eun-bi against Satanyoung, oops I meant Soyoung.

That girl hasn't faced the wrath of EB10 before, I love how unprepared she is for it and how easily Eun-byul flicks off every single attempt to manipulate her.

spot-on.

And looking at So-young's parents, they actively enable her to be a bully and avoid the consequences.

Eun-byul is literally the first person EVER to give her a taste of her own medicine and dish out a little of what she served, right back at her.

Of course other people have turned on So-young and reminded her that she is a very small fish in this pond (notably Eun-bi, Song-joo and Tae-kwang) but Eun-byul is the first one to do it with full knowledge and absolutely no fear of having a secret exposed by So-young. Which is what makes her even scarier to So-young because she absolutely cannot be bullied or manipulated, she doesn't even play So-young's games.

oh, and Orange Marmalade. I quite like the sageuk storyline, which is turning out to look even better than the high school stuff....and Lee Jong-hyun's acting isn't too bad either.

I just wish they'd cast someone else as Ma-ri. Someone like Kim Yoo-jung or Kim So-hyun, maybe (or Kim Sae-ron, heaven knows Yeo Jin-gu would be a MUCH more age-appropriate lead for her than those two idol boys she was cast with in that drama last year). Seolhyun's acting isn't horrific but she has about as much charisma as a slice of white bread, which is kind of a problem when you end up wondering why the hero is head over heels for someone so bland.

Overused Tropes
Something that has always fascinated me about Korean dramas is the use, and often huge overuse of various tropes, and how they seem to go through cycles. And they seem to all of a sudden start appearing in the majority of dramas.

At one time the broken high heel (and of course the hero catching the falling heroine) was in just about every romance type show, then it just totally disappeared.

The broken high heel has now been replaced with the shoelace tying thing (why is it that so many Koreans never learned to tie shoes?). That trope has recently appeared in at least a dozen different dramas.

My fascination with them is not the tropes themselves - most are just stupid and unrealistic - but in how they seem to spread like a disease and then just die away (perhaps from the fan/blogs screaming "enough is enough"?).

The tropes never stop.:) One of many that I wish they would stop is the faint sleep. Nobody sleeps like a regular person on dramas, they faint so hero can even carry them without waking them up. Detest that. The heavy drinking all the time also bores me, especially when it leads to piggyback rides, those will really never go away.

Same here with all the heavy drinking. It seems to pervade almost every k-drama of every type. Sometimes I wonder if the booze industry is funding some of these dramas.

I hate the drinking. It seems like you can't get through a drama with at least one drinking scene, drinking-to-total-drunkenness scene, and some dramas have more than one scene like that.

Other than the fact that it makes me think Koreans must have some serious alcohol problems, drinking scenes are pretty much always used the same way – either a love confession (or confession of some other sort), in which case the drunken person often gets carried home, or some secrets being revealed that shouldn't be revealed. I also don't like that the situation nearly always tends to be set up as "I'm drinking because that's the only way I can take care of my problems". School 2015 had it (a teen drama!!!), Producer, High Society.... it would probably be easier to list dramas that don't involve drinking & drunkenness.

I hate it, too. Perhaps this explains some of it.

Whether it's whiskey, vodka, or soju, people around the world love their liquor. And some countries love liquor more than others... South Korea handily dominates the list of countries, drinking more than twice as much liquor per capita as any other country.

From what I've read, treatment for alcoholism is still very sparse.

The accidental kisses that happen whenever someone trips should have died off years ago. It's too silly even for Kdramas.

The Taiwanese dramas are the worst at those.

I'd scratch any situation that involves the female suddenly no longer being able to walk and avoid completely normal obstacles (like cyclists riding by) just because the guy that's meant to be her eventual OTP partner is walking next to her.

Drives me bonkers because this really never happens.

Agree that Taiwan dramas are one of the worst at this - one of several reasons why I find it very hard to get into most T-dramas.

And that stupid cyclist thing.. yeah, really. Not only can the heroine not avoid it, she never sees it even when right on top of her as she watches it happen. And you have to wonder how the bicyclist managed to make it so far in Seoul without hitting anyone ever - except the heroine?

Silly stupid but so funny, those accidental kisses.
And every actor and actress gets to do a drunk scene and a karaoke song at some point in just about every Kdrama.

The tropes go through fads just like everything else. There are the enduring ones- like piggyback rides and 24 hour death fevers, and there are the passing ones- like shoelaces or unattended cell phones.

One that I'm glad has passed is the guy giving the girl his shoes. Never understood the point of that- yes, her feet are protected, but now his are injured from walking barefoot through the streets. Couldn't they just go with the piggyback at that point?

It also seems like fewer characters are physically removing their cell phone batteries instead of just turning off their phones, happy to see that one go.

I wish the 24 hour death fever would end- I know, nursing your secret crush back to health is a great way to build intimacy, but it's not, really.

While the removing of cell phone batteries may be appearing less frequently in dramas, it was certainly present in Divorce Lawyer In Love, a current drama.

I saw this happen in the episode I watched last weekend.

What about scenes where either a male or female lead is in the room while you're sleeping and touches your hair or face it's just so unbelievable to me because even if I'm asleep if you come into my room chances are I'll sense a presence, unless I'm drugged but to touch my face or hair, I will definitely wake up,even if you are standing next to my bed looking at me,I'll wake up.don't get me started on the tripping and falling on your lips or in your arms or the being pulled away from a moving vehicle I'd shoot someone If i have to recount the number of times I've said oh puhlease and rolled my eyes to the back of my head. These scenes should be banned and any writer that uses these tropes should be suspended from writing and being called Writernim for 5 years.
Association of dramas, let's hold a meeting... First on the agenda,we got rid of cancer, how is the amnesia thing getting along...
And while I'm complaining can vampire and split personalities trend get banned for life, with absolutely no resuscitation.

I am truly sick of the entire vampire thing in Korean and US shows.

There are a lot of overused stupid tropes in American shows and movies also, but I don't watch many of those.

Currently watching or trying to watch:

School 2015 - a bit disappointed with this drama since it had so much story to tell and yet everything took a backseat to the love triangle.

Producer- another drama that turned into your basic love square. I think I got spoiled by the likes of Misaeng, Liar Game and Bad Guys or maybe I am just a little burnt out on rom-coms. I guess I was expecting it to be more like King of Dramas and less like Reply 1994.

Sweet 18 - old school rom-com which I can't believe I never watched before. It's nice to see Lee Dong Gun in a good rom-com. Fell in love with Han Ji Hye. She was too adorable. Lee Dae Hee as the villain felt weird and also she looked so different back then. I hardly recognized her. Thumbs up for this drama.

My Unfortunate Boyfriend - watched it for Yang Jin Sung. It was an okay rom-com but the OTP chemistry was nowhere to be found. I am usually all for male leads acting like a manchild because it can be real funny but Noh Min Woo took it too far. He seemed more like a boy trapped in a man's body rather than a man with child-like innocence.

Mask Prosecutor - fell way behind on this drama because the first few episodes felt like a mess. Kim Sun Ah is still awesome though.

Ex-Girlfriends Club - I was completely bored after 2 episodes so I kinda dropped it. A lot of people seem to like it though so will probably pick it back up and hope for the best.

Warm and Cozy - vasectomys and tubal ligation for the three siblings. Someone has to stop that bloodline before the assholery spreads. lol

Have a nice weekend!

Hi everyone! I'm currently watching School 2015 and liking it so far. I stopped caring about shipping but Eunbyul and Yian would be perfect together!

My finals start on Monday and I want some recommendations of good and sort of recent dramas without romance (I have already watched White Christmas, Bad Guys and Misaeng) to watch on my vacation. Any suggestions?

Warm and Cozy: This week got me so pissed off and disappointed. How much are they going to push this Geon Woo's idiot/asshole/manchild act? I know that 'deep inside he...' and all but damn it's hard to watch! I can't even swoon at episode's 10 ending because of all this bulls*it. And second lead (as always) is so damn better... Urghh! Only great amounts of cute and sincere can save this. That and some good way to get rid of for Ji Won.

Mask: I'm getting more and more into it. At first I didn't even plan on watching this, judging by the teaser. But I'm so glad that I gave it a chance! This is the drama I'm waiting for the most during the week. The story, as cliché as it is keeps me at my toes with it's pace. I can't wait to see more development (and more and more...). The thing I like the most is that even their circumstances are different both our heroes are lost and they need each other. Not yet on other level (though that will come veeeery soon) but simply as somebody on their side in this loveless money-focused world. I think I enjoy it so much because of acting. Both Soo Ae and Ji Hoon are perfect. Especially he gets to me. Sometimes I just want to hug him, he's so sad. And the villian is so good! Actually everybody is giving a great performance, giving their characters many layers and edges. I love when the drama I wasn't really waiting for or was interested in turns out to be so entertaining. Yay!

Divorce Lawyer in Love: Cute, cute, cute. How cute those two can be? Sometimes it's embarassing to even look at them :) Drama's light and forgetable but I like acting a lot.

Ex-Girlfriend Club: Finally together! Though director is hooot! I have to say that I liked it, even though all this idea of ex-girlfriends gathering like this seems a little bit ridiculous to me. And it sure did look ridiculous, yes.

Who Are You - School 2015: Kind of lost it's pace for me. And I'm done with Han Yi Ahn and his contemplations. I don't know, I was kind of waiting for more romantic development for our heroes and when it FINALLY appeared I'm feeling it's really forced. I got more into parent-child relations and Kim So Hyun being just too good in this. Sometimes I seriously can't believe the girl is just 16. And I love Tae Kwang! How this guy can be so cute?

Producers: How come Hyo Jin gets the best Korean guys to work with? So Ji Sub, Cha Seung Won, Gong Yoo, Jo In Sung, Rain and now Kim Soo Hyun? So jealous! I love their relationship in drama so much! It sure lost it's early episodes style but I'm still well entertained, mainly because of Seung Chan's pettiness. I could watch him being like this forever. Or his poker face. Or his smiling face. Soo Hyun is totally killing this role.

Wow! Seems like kind of a quiet Friday on the OT. Hopefully everyone is getting some sunshine and soft breezes now.

I have been off the OT for over a month due to health issues. Got a BAD diagnosis at the start of May, so I spent a lot of time going to doctors, having tests, and seeing lawyers to put my affairs in order. Then 2 weeks ago, had to have emergency surgery to remove tumors and most of my reproductive parts. (It's ok, I was done with them anyway!) And then the great news - everything was benign (NOT cancer)! Whew; HUGE sigh of relief. And I feel so much better already. But what a roller coaster ride that was!

Haven't had time or been up to watching much K drama, but am slowly catching up on IHITTG. Such a good show.

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with: I live in the US, and just set up my television with a Roku3 box. It said that I could get Dramafever with it (one of the main reasons I went with Roku) and I checked it off during the setup, but every time I try to bring it up I just get kicked back to the channel selection page. Has anyone had this problem, and if so, how did you resolve it? Also, how do you sign in to channels such as this if you already subscribe to them before starting to use Roku? So many questions and the Dramafever and Roku websites are not terribly helpful.

I'm always late to the OT, but hopefully someone is still reading who knows the answers. Otherwise, I'll try again next week.

Not sure what the problem might be with Dramafever on ROKU - I have been subbed to it for at least a couple of years now. Never had any issues with it except early on it would sometimes lose sync with the subs. The one bug now it seems to have is that sometimes it will not load the next episode - hangs at 3% or something - and have to go back to main menu then go back to the DF channel and start the next episode you want.

I have my ROKU running directly off of a cable connection instead of WiFi, but that should matter only because it is a bit faster for a couple of the HD channels.

On initial setup you may have to update the ROKU - it is in the settings menu. If already updated (probably is, if set to automatic updates), try restarting (not resetting) from the setup menu.

- more -

See this on how to setup the app for the channel http://support.dramafever.com/customer/portal/articles/828907-how-do-i-link-my-account-to-my-roku-

I think it has to be added to your list of channels for it to work.

If you already have a sub, when you first open the DF channel it should ask you if you want to link that ROKU to it. In my case, I had to go to the DF site and link your ROKU to your DF account, as described here http://www.dramafever.com/apps/roku/guide/

I hate it when I have to work on Friday; I miss all the fun!

What I Watched This Week:

Let's Eat: It's all over! Verdict: Not enough eating. I was rooting for the Administrator all the way, but was pleased at how they portrayed Soo Ji ending things clearly and cleanly.

Missing Noir: WTF was that downer of an ending? The. Hell? I do NOT approve.

The Lover: I really liked the 'OMG AM I PREGNANT?' storyline. I continue to be impressed by Joon Jae and his naked longing.

Orange Marmalade: Well, I'm watching this because my teenage son is watching (that's my story & I'm sticking to it!) It was ok...until we hit the amnesia story, and then I am OUT.

What I Want to Watch:

Cheo Yong 2: EEeeeeeeee! Soon.

K-Drama Moment: We found a meet-up group in the next town over that meets once a month for delicious Korean food at the restaurant where we had our anniversary dinner. They pool their money & order a wide variety of dishes, so everyone can share.

I found out that another library in our co-op has Roaring Currents for checkout! Next, ours is getting Misaeng and Missing Noir when it's available.

I'm starting to actually make a bit of headway on reading hangul - I noticed the other day that I could puzzle out some words I hadn't known before. This is a really good sign, considering that up til now I've felt like the letters were falling out of my brain as fast as I learned them. :)

My Love Eun Dong.....!

In a world of casual encounters, and fleeting memories, only once in a life time does an individual is presented with the fact, that “fate” can miraculously alter the course of our life in such a way, that for the rest of our life that single experience will define our past, present, and future.

My Love Eun Dong, has become my favorite drama of 2015.
This drama contains elements of a bygone era, when fated lovers where separated by time and space, only to be reunited and be separated time and again, by the forces of time Eun -dong's amnesia, evil machinations, step parents, jinx lovers, and sheer selfishness in the part of close individuals.

The story of this fated lovers encompasses, the span of 20 years from the moment they first met, Park Hyun-soo was a 17 year drifter slacker kid, who was always getting in trouble with friends and the law, Ji Eun-Dong on the other hand was a13 year old orphan girl who live with her grandmother, she was poor and unassuming, but with a great sense of fairness and loyalty, that was more mature beyond her years.

Their first encounter happened after Hyun-soo fleeing from the police, riding a motorcycle nearly runs over Eun-dong as she is crossing the street, eventually he gets arrested and is sent before the judge in juvenile court. The judge is imposing a pretty heavy sentence, when Eun-dong makes it to court and pleads with the judge to reconsider his harsh sentence, as she claims that he save her life, and care for her.
After that Hyun-soo takes a more proactive role in Eun-dong's life, bringing that fact to the notice of Hyun-soo's bully friendemies, and gets in a fight with them, after they threat to harm Eun-dong, landing him in the hospital, while Eun-dong's grandma passes away. While he's stuck in the hospital she is taken away to an orphanage, and quickly gets adopted changing her name, so when Hyun-soo gets out of the hospital he can no longer find Hyun-soo.

Hyun-soo once asked Eun-dong what she wanted to be when she grew up, and she said an actress, because if they ever got separated, with her fame she could always will be able to find him........!

Ten Years Latter.....!

Hyun-soo is on his way to become an actor, but he is so bad, that no matter how hard he tries he always fails his auditions, so he eventually volunteers for the National Guard. While working giving parking tickets, eventually on a rainy day a girl in front of him skids on the rain and falls while riding her bike, and lo and behold our fated lover are reunited again.

Their love continues to flourish, but some things are not what it seems, and we find out that Eun-dong is engage to be
marry, and that her home life is not very good specially her relationship with her stepfather, and forgets to mention that after her adoption her name change to Seo Jung-eun.

Our fated couple spend a weekend on the country side, as their love blooms, and...

Part #2......

Our fated couple spend a weekend on the country side, as their love blooms, and it feels like someone is watching over them, eventually back in the city while at the park, Hyun-soo gets jealous at Eun-dong wearing a ring, and thinking that's her engagement ring, takes it off from her and throws it in the river lake, she tells him that that is not her engagement ring, but a ring that her mother left for her.
Hyun-soo jumps on the water to find the ring, and from afar looks like somebody is looking at them again. The water was freezing cold so Eun-dong decides to go and find a dry towel for Hyun-soo, but as we should fear by now, Eun-dong never returns as we see glimpse of a car accident, and subsequent lost of Eun-dong's memory.......

Ten Years Later.....

Hyun-soo is a famous actor by now, so he decides to give it one more try at finding Eun-dong, by writing his biography in the hopes that Eun-dong will read it and try to contact him eventually.
For that task he will need a ghostwriter, to help him fulfill this task, and as fate will have it the ghostwriter is non other than Eun-dong, but this time going by her adopted name of Seo Jung-Eun. Things start move and we see how the truth begins to unraveled as parties involved, find the truth of who Jung-eun really is, from Eun-dong as she reads Hyun-soo essays, she finds herself felling that some how she already know this story being told, Hyun-soo sends her an mp3 file with the song that they heard the first time they kissed, after she acknowledge she received the file, telling him that that's the song, they heard the first time they kissed, only for Hyun-soo to realized latter the he never told her the particulars of the song, sending him in a frenzy as he tries to find how in the world she new that, and to realized that she may be his “Beloved Eun-dong”........

As I stated before this drama is one of the best dramas that I have seen in the last few years, so far we are at episode #6 and oh man what an amazing ride has been so far, I highly recommend this drama it will make you laugh and cry with the same amount of intensity.....Hope you guys like it yours trully Amg1!!!!!!

I was actually very surprised by My Love. Why is it that so often the ones I don't really intend to watch end up being the best shows?

It started off kind of slow, but at ep5 it really started to pick up - and I have to admit that the book story itself is pretty intriguing. Still a lot of mysteries in the plot, like how did she end up getting hurt, unless there were 3 people in the car?
