Happy June Beanies! Summer is here! Although you'd never know it from the weather. But summer fun and a continued jaded feel towards most of the current crop of shows means I'm getting further and further behind in my kdrama watching.

School 2015 All caught up on this (SPOILERS obviously). I still really enjoy this show but mostly for the acting. I'm still not sure how I'll be satisfied with the plot. Honestly I thought Soo In's death secret was going to be a lot worse. Also I feel like there's no OK reason for Eun Byul tricking everyone she loved into believing she's dead. Making them all grieve like that is far beyond selfish. Also my ship is sunk but I didn't expect it to float anyway.

Producer The only storyline I feel strongly about right now it poor manager oppa. I don’t care who ends up with who (or if anyone ends up with anyone), but I do want him to get some sort of happy storyline. He’s really got it the worst of anyone. Also, I find it odd that the show completely dropped their original concept. Sigh.

Murphy’s Law of Love I wanted more cute and this ex business is getting very drawn out. Please nobody have a noble idiot moment. Also, would it kill them to kiss again?

I have nothing more to add to the Orange Marmalade discussion, but I’ll still probably keep up with it despite my acute aggravation. Effective storytelling is something that really should be studied more, sigh.

Missing Noir M 44 minutes in but I had to stop because there were too many missing subs. I have a bad feeling I know where part of this is going. Blargh. And also it feels a bit rushed. I can't believe this show is already over!
----

Behind on this week's Warm & Cozy although it seems from the intros on the recaps that this week will be worth waiting for. Also behind on this weeks Hwajung which I'm straight up enjoying and surprisingly not jaded with even though it has it's own collection of sageuk tropes.

I'm also trying to finish Arang & the Magistrate before Scholar starts (I can't handle a double dose of actors, even if it is Lee Jun Ki). Only three to go!

I love Producer but also wish they'd stayed closer to the original concept. I'm in it for the actors at this point, all of whom are doing a great job so far.

Yeah the plot right now is pretty predictable and par for the course, but I am enjoying the actors...and really enjoying the cameos.

4D- Summer is here indeed! York has had 15 + degrees Celsius and sun for two days. In my perspective this count as summer. Then again, i grew up a place where people started wearing shorts from it hit 10 because double figures. That's one thing I don't miss from china: summer heath of 40.

Ah maybe I should rewatch Arang again. I liked that drama. Though as you say, two differnt saenguk Lee Jun Ki at the same time might be a bit too confusing.

I had to look up what that was in Fahrenheit. I'm still hopeless with conversions. But that's pretty much been the weather here too but....that does not feel like summer. Actually I like weather consistently in the 70s. I seem to get about two days of that in the Spring. Alas.

I'm really enjoying Arang. I hope I like the ending. I like that it's fantastical but isn't overbearing with the action. There is a nice balance of peaceful with chaotic, and everyday life along with mythical elements. I suppose the cast doesn't hurt either...

Haha, no worries, I'm terrible at going between celsius and fahrenheit myself. And don't get me started on meters vs feet and yards and all that stuff..

The cast is good. I can't remember the ending, but I can't remember being disappointed so that's a good thing. I think?

I remember the ending; neat little bows (except for one character who lost out in the deal, if you ask me), and cute final scene. What stands out the most for me is what an entertaining and easy watch it was; I hardly noticed the episode count, and suddenly it was over :-).

Totally agree with you regarding School 2015. I kind of knew Soo In's death was going to be not so shocking and wished that they stopped trying to raise the viewers' expectation.

(Maybe spoiler)
And what her sister did to Eun Bi at the end of ep 11(I think...) was pretty stupid, she was going to be caught for sure.

But I love the actors and the cute shojo manga type romance :3

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I thought that was dumb as well. And then after finding out what happened later it also seemed.....odd. Like that was a real stretch to represent what her sister went through. (Also I find Eun Bi to be rather overdramatic for simply being locked in a classroom. My jerk of a co-worker in high school locked me in the walk-in fridge and I had a less dramatic reaction than Eun Bi.)

I totally agree with you on school 2015. I thought somehow Soo In death was worse and Eun byul had a bigger role, frankly now am a bit confused.

Missibg noir m - is ep 10 really the end? Nooo.. I havent seen ep10. Dramania still dont have ep10, strange.

Now that we know how she died, I totally fail to understand why the school is going to such lengths to cover it up?

Required fields are marked *

I think we all are failing to understand it. (SPOILERS AHEAD)

What difference does it make whether she died at 4 pm (whenever it was) or 8 pm when they finally discovered her? I'm just not seeing how the 8pm is significantly more scandalous to go to such length to cover it up.

Then again, I sort of anticipated that the cover-up was going to be for something not particularly compelling.

Never mind that Soo-in's sister and mother's being bullying psychos to Eun-byul about this is not very convincing. Or if they had least the mother blame herself and the sister blame Eun-byul.....

0

Required fields are marked *

Maybe because having a dead child right there in the middle of a classroom for so many hours looks bad for the school since they were supposed to look after them. It's not like they found her tucked away somewhere. She was right there and nobody did anything. Plus, if they investigated it further, they would find out about the bullying and that's a whole other can of worms.

0

Required fields are marked *

i guess it looks bad that she died at the school, at a time when a lot of faculty would've still been on campus. she was showing symptoms but no one checked on her, so maybe the school could be charged with negligence idk

her death was sad and i understand that sometimes when people grieve they just need someone to blame but... she had encephalomeningitis... its not like someone actually killed her or made her hurt herself. its not really anyones fault. i just wonder... shouldnt she have been exhibiting symptoms before the day of her death? inflammation doesnt work THAT quickly. if the family wants to blame the school and her friends for not noticing something was wrong with soo-in, shouldn't some of that blame also be on them?

Could it have to do with the fact that the homeroom teacher allowed the kids to leave earlier, so technically she died during his supposed watch? I know teachers in my country are really anxious about this and having to respond legally for everything that happens to a student during their class (which is why they never fail to mark the absentees).

0

@eveningcoffee ohhh that actually does make a lot of sense, especially since they mentioned changing the TOD

0

Encephalomeningitis is one of those rare silent killer diseases, and often has very minor or no symptoms.

The most common cause is a virus spread by mosquito.

So basically I am not sure what the big deal is about covering it up. There is not much anyone could have done - even if diagnosed early the survival rate is only about 50%. So if anyone is at fault here it seems to be the mother.

0

@windsun33
oh interesting. idk a lot about it, other than that it has a very low survival rate and that its related to brain/meninges inflammation. i assumed it'd take at least a few days to run its course, but it even seems as if some of the symptoms are common enough problems that someone might easily dismiss them

guess i shouldve done more research before talking about things i dont really understand ^^;;;

0

I understand that the real issue is the coverup, and that basically the school neglected the student to death....but seriously, the amount of guilt the characters are carrying around seems amazingly out of proportion to the incident. And also the way the related the incident to several other students' issues is unconvincing.

0

About Soo In's death, I believe they did this to do not make Eunbyul a "second So Young" since there are only 4 episodes left and they wouldn't be able to explain everything, because thet don't want Eunbyul to be a villain.

If we use School 2013 as an example, the last 4 episodes will probably feature a mini-arc dedicated to one of the students we didn't see a lot about (like the phone issue, if you watched the series).

The romance part will be solved on the last 2 episodes, probably and in parallel with another story.

Happy friday beanies!

Hope you are having a good day! We have had two days of sun here and it makes me feel alittle more positive, although not helping motivation problems. This week has been bad though, as I spent most of it sleeping. Apparently exhaustion caught up with me.

Also need to come up with a proper academic reason and methodology behind my dissertation. Cause "I find swords facinating" and "I choose these examples because they are complete and looks pretty" are unfortunatly not good enough. Also need to find someone willing to proof-read and help me fix all my language mistakes of which there are many. *feels snicking sadness over apparent lack of English writing abilities*

Dramaland:
Orange Marmalade: I will refrain from judging until I see how it fits in, but feeling a little sceptical for the sudden sanguk. Also No, Shi wo can't die *sad*

The lovers: I want to like this show. And at moments I really do. And then other times it feels so silly. I am glad the subbers are persisting, although it feels like they have slightly lost interest. Have a feeling that the writers was not sure about what stories they wanted to tell though.

I always hated explaining why I chose certain topics or my methodology. I've always been of the mind that frankly everyone just goes with what's interesting and sometimes you just stumble upon things.

Orange Marmalade - I've held back on my judgement of the sageuk part but I definitely felt strongly about what they've shown. The first two episodes were like a completely different show from the last two.

The Lover - I'm of the same mind. I think the writers had no real game plan. Sometimes they stumble on something hilarious but most of the time it's just filler.

Required fields are marked *

I know right? And not only do you need to explain it, but make it sosund properly Academical as well. And you need enough sources and background material to suport your arguments, but also be original and new in your presentation. Frustration!

Orange marmalade: I agree, it seems like they did not work it all out between writters and directors on how it should look and just timeline. They are obviously skipping things that would make more sense if you had read the webtoon, but it makes for a confusing watch at times.

I am assuming that the saenguk will tie in with why the edict came into place and so on, but it feels like it does not quite belong where it is in the story. We shall have to see what it comes up with. But parts of ep 4 seems like it belongs to the end of the drama, or at least further in than ep 4 in any case.

The lover: That's it! It really does feel like it is mostly a filler. Which is slightly frustrating, because sometimes you get good stories and then they are just cut away from without being completed. nd at times there seems to be an overlaying theme for the story bits, and other times they are just thrown together. I can see what the drama could have been, and it's slightly frustrating to not have that happen.

The only thing I will say as someone who has been there (and it's meant to be encouraging -- not pedantic I hope) re: the academics is that the tighter and better reasoned and supported the proposal is upfront, the easier the writing goes later. It's like a preliminary edit of all those things that can draw your attention away from the key points in the argument you are making.

0

Required fields are marked *

I've only read part of the webtoon but they seem to have changed a decent amount. I do think that it making sense is an issue, but the real problem I have with putting things in at this speed is that nothing that happens really has time to sink in or affect the viewer. At least for me it doesn't. I need to get emotionally connected to events or people on some sort of level but it's hard to do when it jumps so much. There's no time to reflect on a scene because all of a sudden five minutes later that character is having a completely different reaction because for him that thing you're still thinking about was months ago. Blargh.

Yeah, I still keep watching The Lover because I really *want* to like it so much more than I do. It had a lot of potential.

Hey Manin! Good luck with your dissertation, I would find it impossible to do what you have to because pretty much my only reasons for doing anything are 'I want to' and 'I have to' lol. I'm glad you caught up with sleep though, sleep is important.

The lover - silly and repetitive, I'm kinda bored. I was originally interested inn the couples in 4 apartments in the same building idea thinking it would be more developed. It's shallow and quasi smutty, fieels cheap when I was hoping for clever, especially with the cast. Oh well.

I feel bad for the actors, you can see that they are trying, but their characters just are not very developed. Which is a shame, cause I wanted it to be good.

School 2015- well not satisfied with the reason behind soo in's death, I mean yes obviously death is tragic but the way she was shown bullied, outcast and all was not satisfactory. but another thing is good that Eun byul and Eun bi are meeting before the 15th episode.

Producer- I am enjoying :D that's all

Ex Girlfriend Club- I am really sad that it was shortened :( I really like the humor of this drama

Warm and Cozy- Episode 7 stopped me to drop this drama :) It is now right on track

Mask- surprizingly hooked though very much predictable but the characters are well portrayed

Missing Noir- finished upto ep 6 and Daebaak !!!!!

High Society- Patiently waiting

The Actors I want to see as LEAD in the 2nd half of the year

1. Ji Chang Wook (obviously no. 1 spot)
2. Park Seo Joon
3. Jung Il woo (where is he??)
4.Song Jae Rim

I didn't find Soo In's death to live up to all the drama surrounding it either. I mean, it's tragic but is really just a result of neglect. I think Eun Bi actually had it far worse. Soo In was really more of random chance.

I did appreciate though that they really emphasized that episode how many times the characters asked each other if they were OK. It was a nice counterpoint to Soo In's sister's accusation that asking that would have saved her life.

I hope you are all doing well today. Can't believe it's June already!

Watched this week:

Angry Mom - Gosh, it's so good. ....... But I want to smack Ae-yeon.

Hwajeong - Caught eps 3 & 4 of this. ....... Shaping up quite nicely. Liking it but still unsure if I'll continue with it or save it for a rainy day.

The Girl Who Sees Smells - Seriously, I only tune in to see what Namgoong Min is up to.

Divorce Lawyer In Love - Easy to watch on the weekends.

Marriage Not Dating - Just 2 more episodes to go! ( I'm already sad about that!) ....... I laugh every single time Han Groo looks over to Gong Gi-tae's aquarium and yells out "Hello Nemo-ya!"

That's about it for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Hi beanies, hope you've all had a great week.
Dramaland feels like it's drought season to me, everything feels super boring now.Falling for innocence gone,Orange marmalade took a weird turn,Producers deviated from its original interesting concept, Divorce lawyer, meh,the only light at the end of this drama tunnel is mask it makes me feel like I'm watching Liar game, the villan reminds me of Shin Sung rok.
Watching Giant, it's was awesome till episode 30 when the misunderstanding happened, I hate it when no one says the truth, why just say I didn't try to kill your father and poof hate, stupid revenge gone, but no,the noble idiot will just let that fester.don't get me wrong it's still an awesome show , I just felt the urge to throw something when that happened but I'm sure I'll continue to power through it till the end despite that.
Watched cunning single lady and Master's sun again, still awesome.
Also Trying to motivate myself to exercise by following fitness and workouts on instagram,so that I can one day finally go to the gym but I may demotivate myself instead, tired of pictures of butts and squats, I don't get the obsession with apple butts. Argh,Why can't I wake up fit without pain,so unfair, Lol.if only dramas=reps,I'd be the fittest in dramaland.
That's it,have a great weekend.

Fitness shows never motivate me. But I love food and have to do something. Happiest day in recent memory was the day I realized (because I was binge watching Secret and didn't want to stop) that I could prop up my computer on my husband's elliptical and work out while watching k-dramas. Usually I do about 45 minutes but ep. 4 of Mask got me through a full hour. As long as I have a full slate of dramas on tap, I manage to get a work-out in almost every day, although to be honest, I still don't love working out.

Speaking of Mask. Wow. I love it. Not one but two non-idiotic, overly trusting women.

well ... the only real drama that has captured my attention over the last couple months has ended ... Grapevine was brilliant and the ending, while at first somewhat unfullfilling ... on second and third viewings though, you get to appreciate what really is happening ... and the final 2 minutes is probably the strongest most meaningful scenes I've seen in a very long time. Well, done show ... well done....

Now, we're stuck with current shows that just ... blah ... and I hate it ... we're stuck with a Hong Sister's show that looks anything but a Hong Sister show ... I think I'll just go back and re-watch Greatest Love and Master's Sun ... and then there's Kim Sun Ah's come back show ... and I'm also like ... blah ....

I think the wife and I are going to go look for some plot driven J-Dramas for now ...

Grapevine was INCREDIBLE to me. Characters whose actions stayed true to their back-stories. No amnesia. No love squares. Just a well written, well acted drama. I am going to miss it SOOOO much.

Hello all:

Am really pondering all the shortenings and cutting-shorts of dramas. So.. Grapevine, exgirlfriend, etc.

Wow that finale to Grapevine was really divisive, uh? Some netizens had a problem with the entire drama. Only makes me think that the art of understanding satire is dead. I like an earned HEA but if a story if flowing toward reaistic sad endings, then ..go for it. I do wonder if losing two episodes made for the sad open ending. Who knows? Would Madame Choi and CEO Han have come to enightenment if they had two more epis to do it?

Unfortunate boyfriend: The most bizarre finale. Something felt odd, unworked-out, empty. From the beginning, i always felt something wasn't quite right in the storytelling. Like perhaps we should've been seeing more of Direcor Kang's life or something. The ending felt very Deos ex machina ish. It reminded me of Christian fiction on hallmark channel where writers don't want to give little old ladies too many palpitations. So.. quickie HEA and forgiveness and happiness for all. Just bothered me.

Producers: Wow! The best hang-out drama in a long while. I just love the feeling of hanging out with these folks. I'm hoping for a noona romance but that probably won't happen. Cindy needs our hero's gullibility and he needs her savvy.. so that would be a good match also. Some dramas seem to go with the "you haven't done anything all these years you passive lover so it's time for a change" ( Flower boy next door, Let's Eat 1) and some go for the "they are fated for each other because they knew each other as kids" trope. So... we shall see what this one does? As for the other characters: love them all, especially slick PD. What is the mystery of the supllier lady?

Am satisfied that Ex Girlfriend is being cut. Sometimes it was very good and sometimes it was just plain repetitive. And Alua, your worst fears that it'd be three women with nothing better to do than whine over their lost boyfriend, came true. I gave it he benefit of the doubt but wow...

Missing Noir: Feels weird that it's ending just as I felt it was all just beginning.

Have a great weekend, all.

Unfortunate Boyfriend: I don't think I ever skip-watched a finale as quickly as this one. Total meh. Everyone is just forgiven and everything is forgotten... and it makes no sense. People could have actually learned a lesson or grown as characters – but no. Such flat, and often very dislikable, characters (was there any growth?), forced to a perfect happy ever after. The only good thing about this drama is Tae-woon (who deserved someone better than the passive puppet Ji-na), everyone else was just meh meh meh.

Ex-Girlfriend: no regrets about dropping this one... an interesting premise failed by the writing. Though I feel bad that Byun Yo Han's first drama as a lead is being cut.

Let's just hope he'll get back on the horse fast enough.
Everytime something like that happens to a newbie actor who comes right from a critically acclaimed film(s) to kdramaland, my mind goes right to my beloved Jin Goo and what happened to him after that horrible "Ad Genious"-foolishness. It took him several years and the DoS' 2nd lead to be back (and FFI, of course!).
I know gifted actors usually go back to basics, which is always cinema -or theatre, for some of them- but it also means that it takes years for me to catch up to their work. Dramaland is always the easier and faster (unfortunately) way for an actor to display his talent.

More thoughts on Unfortunate Boyfriend: the reason why the ending feels so terrible is that no one really earned their happy ever after.

Director Kang: he was just given the company (apparently the competition with TW was to show him how to be upright, but how was he ever upright? He just watched people – TW – being upright) and ended up with the girl he only used and never had any convincing feelings for. But apparently he's now a happily married CEO.

Hye-mi: she said some wise words at the beginning with her strawberry plant analogy, and yet it still feels she got what she wanted in the end because she was scheming and using her position the whole while (that's not raising your own strawberry plants!), and ultimately Ji-na just resigned, just handing it all over to her. Apparently now married with the love of her life, the one she wanted.

Ji-na: got dumped by Kang so she just went to the suitor waiting in the arches. Never told the poor sweet guy that she was two-timing him. While at the beginning of the show it seemed like she was genuinely falling for TW, that was eliminated when she started going out with Kang, so when Kang broke up with her, she went for the alternative solution. So passive. That's not real feelings of love.

Tae-woon: well, he did earn himself a happy ending but he deserved someone much better than Ji-na!

You might be right about not so much the ending of My Unfortunate as in the development of the characters. But considering it was a fluffy drama on cable with not exactly the most brilliant cast in the universe, I believe they delivered the best possible outcome. Personally I'm very content because my expectations were low and they managed to exceed them. That's not an easy feat for dramas these days.

Totlly agree with wht you just said. I kept saying to myself, "Am i some petty justice fiend? Why do i want some sense of responsibility? But why is this worse than the typical kdrama redemption arc?" BECAUSE THERE IS NO FRICKIN ARC!!!!

I kept thinking the shares were being bought for Ji-na's dad which would make sense if it's about reparations and forgiveness. But the bad guys pretty much kept all they had or wanted or felt guilty about having. And Hyem- getting the guy? I was like...wow!!!! REALLY????

Carole - I loved the Grapevine ending, because I felt it was fitting and realistic for the story. It was never the kind of drama that was going to end with the bad guys all in jail or repenting, while our good guys inherit a fortune and live happily ever after. But it ended with people positioned exactly where their choices in life brought them, and that was great.

And I really do agree with you that some netizens missed the point of the story by miles. All the complaints about the uncle's lawsuit and why is he causing trouble (uh, maybe because Hansong and their clients are thieves and are the people you SHOULD be angry with, for stealing worker compensation money via tax evasion). Or the complaints about Bom acting against her in-laws (after seeing the way they treated her).

School 2015- SPOILERS.
I still love the thing and really unless Kim So-hyun suddenly forgets how to act nothing can happen to change my mind. So Eun-byul is definitely alive and back so that means we get answers soon right? We might get what I wanted from the get go which is Kim So-hyun not just acting with herself but facing off as I'm thinking Eun-bi and Eun-byul might fight a bit. Unlike some other opinions I've seen from what I could gather from Eun-byul I never thought her intentions were entirely benevolent or malevolent more like, speaking in old RPG nerd terms, chaotic neutral which frankly is where I think most humans fall on that scale making Eun-byul to me at least uniquely human. It seems like my ship is at least on fire and sinking as Eun-bi turned down poor sweet Tae-gwang but to be fair so is the other one as I no longer think there is a male lead.

Warm and Cozy- I liked episode 7 and judging from the recap I think I'll love episode 8.

Producers- I can't wait for the next episodes.

Orange Marmalade- I seem to be one of the few that still loves it, though 4 episodes of Joseon has me worried.

I decided to drop Masked Prosecutor.

Missing Noir M- Granted Viki hasn't finished subbing yet so I can't be 100% positive but, that wasn't an ending. Not even close so unless something ground breaking is said I'm sticking to that was not an ending it's a middle. There better be a confirmed second season.

My Love Eun-dong- I watched the first two episodes and I liked it more than I thought I would, but couldn't we have spent more time with Baek Sung-hyun and Yoon So-hee? I'm afraid that all the cute and funny will be gone now with our 30's actors.

I loved Secret so I'm thinking of picking up Mask, how is it so far?

I look forward for my beloved to take over in the adult phase with the hope of a korean "Vow" to "Notebook" version. Yes, pure romance. My only fear is the leading lady whom I've seen only in Secret Garden and... well, we all know.

Dropped Warm and Cozy after last week. I've been too lenient with the writers' previous works too, but this one has no redeeming qualities beyond the scenery porn.

Dropped Producer halfway into the 5th episode. Once I let it sink in that this is a stock K-drama now, I realised that I hate every single character, and not even with a passion. First ever Gong Hyo-jin show that I didn't finish.

With Grapevine over (I loved the finale btw, even though some few things felt rushed to me) and neither Mask nor Masked Prosecutor being particulary exciting, I'm down to a single K-drama now: School 2015. I think it improved somewhat during the last week, it still doesn't commit to what story it is trying to tell, but it felt much smoother.

Hello~ It's the first Friday since my second semester ended so of course, what better way to take a break from acads + rediscover fun than kdramaland? ^^

Who Are You - School 2015 : Ahhh, the kdrama that won't let me spend one more night at the campus dorm because if I do, I can't livestream so yeah, went on a three hour bus trip home right after my last final exam and what do I get from that? Endless tears for our lonely precious blondie kiddo, Taekwangie~ I'm more disappointed than angered (like I was with the awful Eunbi bullying back in Tongyeong) at the actual cause of death of Jung Sooin. Neglect. Denying the girl of attention as a longtime friend, as a teacher, as a mother, as a sister or even just as a classmate... yes, it definitely wouldn't hurt to have just someone, anyone actively show the slightest concern that it's been hours and she's not getting up. And when Eunbyul thought it was okay to show hers, it was horrifyingly too late. But I still think it wasn't enough to warrant reason for Jung Minyoung's vendetta on who she believes are to blame. There's always another person to blame, another person responsible in a way and I can't put exactly why but maybe the story's still incomplete but I'm inconvinced because there was all this hype. And before I forget, just when Eunbi finally, finally allows herself that fresh start with Mikyung - well, Eunbyul obviously has other ideas? Lay them out, girl. It's about time, we don't have many episodes left. My shipping preferences aside, I just really want the twins having sleepovers with their mom, is that too hard of a wish to come true?

Heard It Through The Grapevine : "You're trapped in the prison of your own making." What a fine last two episodes for a drama that got me frustrated by the lack of lighting in that ostentatious house. I understood why writernim opted not to make Hansong crumble completely right away, it stayed true to its realism roots. And how precious is it that Bom, Insang and baby Jinyoung are together and striving towards their dreams because they had their family's support (the Seos, the nice ahjumma and the butler and Lee biseo and the tutor).

Misaeng : Anddd here's the kdrama I marathoned. Dammit, made me cry so hard right from episode 1, who does that? It keeps on tugging at my heart with everybody's struggles to achieve their idea of wanseng and I have no words. Except I should have watched it while it was airing, this one's ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

Still have to catch up on the rest of the currently airing (The Producers, Ex-Girlfriends' Club), start new marathons (Reset, Reply 1994) and try that unsubbed KBS1 tv movie, Snowy Road. How do I resist Kim Saeron + Kim Hyanggi after Queen's Classroom? No way. Plus, there's Jo Soohyang (the one playing Kang Soyoung in School 2015) in the cast so it's worth following my hunch; hope I understand at least 70% of it.

Misaeng cleanly blew literally every single other drama of the last few years, out of the water - I remember watching live and right at episode 1, being scared because this drama was TOO good - how would they keep that quality with live shoots and writing on the fly to adjust to ratings?! At least you spared yourself that worry by being able to marathon

Anyway, my fears were groundless because it just kept getting better and better, it's one of the very few things I've watched that genuinely touched me instead of just entertaining me. And it is actually flawless - there's nothing in it that feels slapdash or careless.

And re: Grapevine - “You’re trapped in the prison of your own making.”

This line was so proophetic in so many ways. I loved that final shot of Han Jung-ho. Like Misaeng, Grapevine has a realistic feel even though it belongs to a totally different genre but I love that the two dramas both end with people breaking away to form their own little family unit/company.

Part of me when I was about to start the Misaeng marathon was asking, "Surely, is it really as great as all the praises I've heard so far?" And it exceeds my every expectations and unbelievably delivers better with each episode. Bravo.

When it came down to watching Grapevine's last week, I thought I was taking this good show for granted. The little nuances which the drama went to and didn't, I'll make sure to appreciate them next time I rewatch the show.

So, Grapevine. Wow, what a study in sociology. *spoilers* like I said before, Secreetary Yang's voice and demeanor drove me crazy to the end. She reminded me of Assistant Director Aunt Choi in Blood - self preservation above all. Yeah, throw your brothers under the rug, ladies.
But the overall Great Shift that took place was done very well, and I kept saying all along that the Hans' downfall was their inability to change. Their concerns were only what would maintain their status and Mr. han's obnoxious philosophical quotations were selective to his benefit.

Professor Park surprised me, because I didn't see how hugely important his role actually was, but he was the catalyst for ideas to be come reality. The announcement that the mock exam scores went up 10 points was such a delightful way to keep it all real, rather than a grand announcement of th final bar results. That would have been too forced, although it is a good example of how the show could have easy stuck with two more episodes. I was happiest for bom's mother, she was herself all the while - the family's backbone, and deserved the fulfillment of her role as grandmother.

In Sang and Bom, I love you! Up their for best Kdrama couple. Grapevine and yoona's Street are two longer kdramas that made me very happy.

There was a relentless cynicism about the smugness of the rich and how it stops them from changing that I totally loved. IT rings true! Sometimes folks just don't change. And in kdramas we're so used to EVERYONE changing. Which is not how life works, especialy when power and weath are on the side of the baddies.

Exactly. Despite their obvious affection for Jin-young (which makes me wonder if they even showed In-sang that much affection, as a baby) they're still terrible people.

Which makes it all the braver for the drama to place them so squarely at the centre of it, because having two central protagonists be terrible people certainly removes the we-want-them-to-live-happily-ever-after predictability of most dramas.

Grapevine wasn't just entertainment, it was a pretty incisive look into class inequalities in Korea and the way those can play out. It was never going to be your 'OTP-gets-together-and-all-the-bad-guys-are-defeated" kind of drama, and it didn't even go there.

And the open ending is the only fitting kind here - life moves on, and power and corruption can't be immediately defeated or brought to account by a bunch of idealistic young people right away. But in many of the most important ways, something has changed for the Han parents and it's really a Pyrrhic victory for them as he tries to keep everything the way it always was (and she can't even keep up the pretense anymore). While the ostensible losers i.e. Bom, In-sang, the former household staff, Je-hoon & Co. - are the ones who appear content and optimistic about their fresh start away from that house and Hansong.

and Teacher Park is a pretty important catalyst for a lot of things in the plot. After all, it was on his recommendation and praise of Bom that the Hans initially decided their new daugher-in-law was a gem in the rough and they should accept her and mould her to their standards. And now he's the one who's backing them up as students.....it's awesome.

It is the old " Because I say so" with no questions asked, but to the extreme. Absolute power at home, work, social status, investments, and all with no proper accountability. Of course his money empire allowed that, but look how one chink in The armor when jostled caused a hole that grew and couldn't be repaired the old way. And look how many lives it involved. I was pretty amazed at how open almost everyone was with Mr Han about what they were doing.

Pogo you're right it was more than just entertainment

@Owl
Wow...I like this new approach to kdramas!Do you consider Grapevine a more intresting or/and thorough Sociology-thesis material than A Wife's Credentials? Since this particular production team tends to bring in discussion difficult and controversial issues, it's always a pleasure for us to watch them unfold their story.
Personally, I've thought AWC to be a slightly more universal issue that can happen on every corner of the planet, affecting numerous people in a person's micro-environment, either family or social one. Perhaps, when it's the upper class under the microscope the whole issue becomes less ordinary or reachable for everyday people...

Hi Kalel, I haven't' seen A Wife's Credentials, although I love Kim Hee-An (Secret Affair). April 2012, when it came out, is the very month I began watching kdramas, and I had no idea it was a whole new universe and I got lost in space! I will put it on my list, and watch with an eye for the sociological implications of the story. I think one could do a paper or thesis on this aspect with plenty of kdrama material out there. Wouldn't that be double duty - watching kdramas and knocking out a thesis :)

Happy Friday and Weekend All!

It's been a mixed week, what an on-going battle with almost-flu, a mass of meetings and shows when I can slot them in. I'm a little distracted but I'm just managing to keep track of some of them. :)

Ex-girlfriend Club: This show I gave up after 2 episodes since no one in it felt relatable, then took it up again and found myself enjoying it thoroughly. It took some time for the interplay of the girls to really gel and for our OTP to not just be reactive but to forge their own path and come together properly. Couple moments at last!!! Now that, that's coming along, I guess we're can expect a lot more interference with Ex-g Club hijinks and lots of laughs.

I like the fight over rice cake and potatoes between the two guys with all that double speak about rights to get the girl and with Soo Jin commenting on there being enough potatoes and rice cakes for all! Well better to be called high carbo foods than a female dog LOL!

I find Byun Yo Han quite delightful here, even more likable than in Misaeng. Ji Hyo here seems about the same as she was in Emergency Couple, ie I cannot really differentiate Oh Jin Hee (EC) from Kim Soo Jin when I watch her. However, since I enjoy Ji Hyo whenever, it's not too big an issue to me.

Other shows:
Mask: The best of the lot so far for me.

Masked Prosecutor: Still good enough to hold on to, although the issues to fight for are not too compelling. However the developments between the OTP are what will keep me watching, while hoping that the other parts of the story contribute to more relevant revelations and bring the OTP even closer together.

Orange Marmalade: Worth watching for the sheer speed at which events are shown to us... at least to see if it will crash or still redeem itself with sageuk and modern episodes making sense.

My Love Eun Dong: Rather slow and over melo. It did not make sense to me that the guy could not find the girl if he had put in some effort. The 2nd time he loses her, he has really no excuse. If girl says to one, .. "Wait for me", and goes off to get medicine, how can one just not take action to look for her after even half an hour, let alone hours of waiting!!! Just beyond belief.

Re-watching Healer: The feels are as good as new and each re-watch brings to my awareness something else that is good and note-worthy about this show and its execution. With (or despite) all the limitations it had (time and money mainly), I cannot stop appreciating just how well-made it turned out and how thoroughly thought through the writing must have been, to have everything hang together so well.

I felt so bad to know that Healer could not wrap up well because of money and rating issues :( ... after Healer I understood how obsessed I was.... It still gives me chills :)

Yup @fantasy... somehow Healer really hit us hard. No other show before or since has got that same power to instill obsessive-compulsive viewing in me LOL! I recall dropping every other show and even some RL stuff just to have the time for this show.

Like you it was essential for me to watch it raw, subbed, re-watched, read recaps/comment, etc. All of it still did not satiate the thirst for more. Can't explain it, especially since it was not just a few of us who experienced this but many, many commenters and probably lurkers too, on DB and other sites. All I can say (which I mentioned ages ago) is that this was one show that got the right balance of all the elements so that all came together like ingredients to make the perfect or almost perfect meal.

Now the re-watch is like a near perfect dessert!! Still so much fun with no signs of abating. :)

@ Wag_a_Muffin

:D That's what happened to me. I read another person's comment that suggested I watch the later episodes and so I tried and finally found Ex-g Club good.

I like the irony:
1)no one except Soo Jin and Myeong Soo wants the movie to be made, but somehow circumstances just pile on so that the very people who were trying to put obstacles in the way of it, have to or decide to support the movie.

2)almost all do not want Soo Jin and Myeong Soo to get together, but again end up instrumental in bringing them together, despite themselves.

So now we have to see how the love triangle-together-with-anti_love-star (yup, 5-6 cornered star?) plays out. I hope the trope is creatively used instead of just frustrating, and that it entertains us no end!!! :)

re: My Love Eun Dong. I really like this show because it's just so romantic but I also can see the nonsense in the writing. I had the same disbelieve that he didn't try to call her and waited all night long? I'm sure they had phones in 2005! The current timeline has him not recognizing her after 10 yrs... Seriously, no one changes that much unless one has had plastic surgery or huge weight loss.

@ aafa83
I too started watching it hoping to find a nice romance. I really like the young actors part of it... that somehow was triple more romantic than their meeting again as adults.

I was wondering why if in other shows, they retain the adult actors from their so-called 'teen' years into 'early adulthood'... why they did not have the main OTP actors already for this 1st reunion. In all there are 6 actors playing the part of 2 people and they all look rather too different from each other and there are no points of similarity between the child and the adult. It's hard as a viewer to relate with each different actor... to believe it's the same person and feel engaged in their angst. I feel that I'm just watching a kiddy romance followed by another romance that just has adults instead of kids, and not that I'm following 1 romance over time.

Still as usual, time-permitting, I'll keep watching to give it a fair trial. If the romance disconnect is too great or the melo goes beyond the already ridiculous into utter stupidity, I may drop it. But I'm hoping the worst (of the ridiculous losing a person) is over... however this is kdrama... which means they can really pile on the suffering and the frustration LOL!

Beloved Eun-Dong: what I can't believe is that how the two, after separating 10 years, just find each other like that (eundong runs into the boy). Like, it's the cheesiest meeting ever. I'd buy it if when they're in the same building, someone called the name "Eun-dong!" and the boy turns his head but it was late so he chased outside and that's when the crash happened.

@ Daehoney
I was getting the idea that the writer is really trying to drown us in the cheese. It's like they think viewers must see repeat-rewind sentimental sweetness to be touched or something.

So they meet the first time when her runs into her on a motorbike, therefore when they meet again she now has to run into him on a bike.

When she disappears the first time, it never occurs to him to ask around for her at all orphanages run by priests/nuns. He knew where she lived but never asked for her surname - so we excuse him based on youth and lack of information.

The 2nd time, it never occurs to him to get off his butt to go and look for her and didn't he have her phone number by now? And now he knows her surname but he does not know where she lives???? This is beyond belief! But it's a melo-romance where a person keeps his word until the end, "I said I'd wait here, so here I stay"... and that's supposed to be romantic. *face palm*

VARIETY SHOW
-CRIME SCENE S2: Jinho's acting is improving greatly for sure. And that was an intricate trick for the criminal part, with fake alibi and time death and all that. But yay for BoA!! Seems like next week case will be more complicated. (Psst, I really hope Dir Jangjin is the one who get the criminal role card, wanna see how well he can act.)

-KING OF MASK SINGER: Kim Seulgi? Really?? Wow, never knew that she has a beautiful voice. Nice to see you there.

DRAMA
-MISSING NOIR M: You end it like that? Omaigad, you really end it like that? OCN, how dare you. I want answeeeer... Well, I guess they still manage to carry their message through with that open ending, but, but... Oh sigh, might as well wait for the next season. #cross finger

-EX GIRLFRIEND CLUB: That director sure is bizarre, what is his deal, srsly? He always know whenever something happened, just like a ghost. Ugh and those GFs always had a suck timing, ruining our OTP moment. But that kiss in the end.. Omo, can't wait for the next eps.

-MASK: I tried not to watch this because I know this one will def dive into full melo-makjang. But then everyone started talking about it and even JB give us a recap. So I give in and watch it and... surely, what a guilty pleasure.

Mask:The conflicts in this drama are so good the characters are so intriguing and layered. It's a makjang weaved with silk and gold thread, it's so gloriously classy. And the way the story of the Frog and Scorpion was added in episode 3, wooooow *clap, clap, clap *.

I haven't finished Let's Eat 2, but I've liked it so far even if my shipper tendencies have been pulled this way and that a LOT.

I'm glad for Yoon Doo-joon and Seo Hyun-jin's sakes that this is a success though, they are so talented. Especially him, since he's the rookie of the two. But he makes a fantastic leading man, I can't imagine Gu Dae-young played by anyone else.

Best watching this week:

Fuben na Benriya. The perfect zero-plot drama. So, so funny. Highlight for me every week.

–Finally watched Soredemo Ikite Yuku. Emotional rollercoaster. Absolute masterpiece. Amazing, amazing acting. Eita and Mitsushima Hikari (plus the whole supporting cast) – does it get any better than that? It's not just that they are superb actors, but their whole portrayal of the characters is so real. All the heavy, emotional scenes are amazing but then there are all the tiny little things, the more subtle body language, the little gestures, the pauses. Mitsushima (who I saw in a live-performance of Hamlet last week) really impresses me because she doesn't take the popular roles in popular productions, but she takes all the really difficult roles.

The drama also reminded me why I couldn't get emotionally invested in Soo-in's death in School 2015. Conveying the burden a family member carries... the School 2015 people could take some lessons from Soredemo Ikitte Yuku.

Speaking of live performances: saw both Ninagawa's Hamlet and his Kafka on the Shore on the stage in London last week. Brilliant. Furahata Nino, a total newbie, especially impressed me as Kafka. He totally outshone Fujiki Naohito (who looked mightily fine however)!

You'll love him in the drama, but prepare yourself for a lot of tears. It's a devastating story – Eita plays the older brother of a 7-year old that gets murdered who, 15 years on, meets the sister of the murderer, with both – and their whole families – still being in immense pain.

Soredemo Ikite Yuku is indeed a masterpiece, it was in many ways so heartbreaking yet It's definitely one of the few drama that I love to re watch again and again (with a box of tissues next to me :)). Eita and Mitsushima Hikari + the entire cast were brilliant !! A must watch in my opinion.

Just the theme song makes me tear up.

I have to systematically watch all of the dramas of the screenwriter (Sakamoto Yuji). I already quite liked Last Christmas and Mondai no Aru Restaurant got better the longer it went on; Saikou no Rikon I never quite got into and didn't finish but I think I'll give it another try. Woman I didn't have time to watch when it aired but the couple of episodes I saw were very good. A few others I had come across but never tried – now that I know they are by this writer, I'll just have to watch them (Mother; the My Sassy Girl remake; Homeroom on the Beachside). The only drama of his I didn't like so much was Itoshi Kimi e...

I haven't seen either of these, but eita has a special place in my heart. Would you recommend them? I feel so out of the loop with Jdramas atm (even more so than korean ones, and it doesn't help that fewer places are subbing and holding japanese shows)

Yes, yes, yes absolutely recommend them

I was already going to suggest Fuben na Benriya to you (saw your comment about the Unfortunate Boyfriend disappointment), there is zero plot (a young screenwriter gets stuck in a snowed-in town in Hokkaido and essentially is a drama queen about everything) but it's hilarious. It falls into the "quirky jdrama" category, so you'd have to be up for that. Mydramatea has some review/recaps of Fuben na Benriya.

Soredemo, Ikite Yuku: it's a must-watch. But as I have mentioned already, this drama covers the darkest of dark topics so it's for when you want a story with substance that will send you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Highly realistic too – no magical solutions to anything. Quality is at film-level I would say.

0

Yeah I'm not looking forward to that part either (also looked up the history. I tend to do that with historical dramas). But there is a lot I'd go through to see Inoue Mao act. She is one of my favorite japanese actresses.

0

Yes, Inoue Mao is wonderful. Getting better and better, especially if we consider her Hana Yori Dango beginnings!

Have you seen her in Rebirth?

0

No I haven't. Is it good?

Her drama Ohisama is one of my all time favorites.

0

Yep, it's very good.

That's when I realised that Inoue has got some real acting chops.

It's a film though, so I don't know how easy it is to get hold of.

In that case, how about an alternative recommendation?

I am a couple of episodes into Tiger & Dragon (2005), which is a whacky comedy drama. Apparently a gem that most don't know about. It's very funny so far, but I'm also digging the directing style – it integrates rakugo (the art of Japanese storytelling), which at first is a little confusing but is actually really clever. Nagase Tomoya and Okada Junichi are leads – one is a yakuza that wants to be a rakugoka, the other the reluctant heir of a rakugo family – , supporting cast includes Ito Masaki, Yu Aoi, Kiritani Kenta and many others.

0

ooh, now that sounds fun! Will look it up.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I need something to watch, one tearjerker and a zany Japanese show sounds promising.

I had actually watched the first episode of Soredemo, Ikite Yuku awhile back, (after seeing Mitsushima Hikari in Mother).

I'm only watching School 2015.

I will have to stop watching this for the next episodes because of my finals (at least is what I'm planning to do, haha!), but I plan to catch up later.

This drama is already one of my favorites, even though the couples I want to be together will not. I think the problem isn't Eunbi not wanting to be with Taekwang, the problem is Yian no longer liking Eunbyul, who he liked since always. I would be 100% fine if the writers decide to make Eunbi and Taekwang be alone in the end because they need to learn how to like themselves for who they really are. I believe that their friendship exists as a way to help them to believe more in who they are. But Yian and Eunbyul need to end up together and I'm afraid this will not happen and the writers will try to convince us that he didn't liked her romantically (even though he promised - and gave - her a really important medal of a national competition) and neither she liked him (which I guess is proven wrong due the fact she listened to his competition on her phone and even hid this fact from Song Joo back on episode 1).

Also, I can't wait to see Yian's reaction to the fact that Eunbyul is alive!

Hello beanies!
My first open thread:) I always wondered what these were but never ventured to actually read the comments..lol glad I did this time!

Lets eat 2-so annoyed with that last ep & the last two measly minutes of supposedly cute..by that time I was irritated enough to not find it satisfactory.

Orange marmalade-i thought I knew where it was going and then a saeguk happened..im really nervous because I find aeguks hard to keep my interest..and I was so invested with the current characters im not sure how im going to respond..part of me hopes I hate it so I can justify my current dislile..lol

School 2015-im so done with shipping I just want taekwang who is my favorite character to have a good ending..i really thought the sooin thing was going to be a bigger deal..and like others mentioned eunbyul better have a VERY good reason for disappearing..& im curious about the twins interactions.

Exgfclub-i like this one and want the leads together with lots of cute &skinship please.

Producers-loving it. Dont care about the pairings too much and still wish they had stuck with their original style..oh well.

Mask-a happy surprise although im positive the family will soon drive me out of my mind..so im not sure I will stick with it.

Warm&cozy- I like how its pretty simple and cute also I hate jiwon.

The lover- only following takuya&junjae and the last 2eps have been disappointing

The thing about Mask and melodrama...these type of shows aren't simply makjang, they are more like romantic suspense dramas. They tend to have a strong OTP couple, somewhat twisted heroes (that are redeemed by love, LOL), and usually a happy ending for the OTP. Other examples would include Secret (of course...), Nice Guy, Hotel King, and Beyond the Clouds.

Agree and a real throwback to the kind of film Hollywood used to make in the 1930's and 1940's. Very suspenseful and female-centric with ambiguous male leads. It's like who is Ji-sook going to end up with, Min-woo or Seok-hoon? Seok-hoon is shaping up to be the classic dark and very, very attractive anti-hero with a tragic and twisted past much like Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. It's intense and dramatic with strong roles for women who carry the action instead of eeking and shrieking in the background. Contrast this with Masked Prosecutor where the Kim Sun-ah character, who is supposed to be a hard-nosed super cop, lies passively on a stairway while masked prosecutor prevents a guy on a motorcycle from running her over, with his bare hands no less. You're a cop, get out your gun or hit him over the head. Help the poor schmuck who is try to save you out, why don't you!

The good...
Heard It Through The Grapevine -
Loved how much that show gave viewers to explore. From its satirical look at power and elitism, the character portrayals, to the cinematography, I thought it was fantastic. The house itself was a great metaphor for the story being told.

The bad...
I'm having a really hard time feeling anything but threadbare interest in Jeju, Producers, or Prosecutor. When I'm watching a show more because I like the actors themselves then the story being told, something's not right.

The ugly...
How I felt when I heard that they were cutting down Ex-Girlfriend's Club. I have loved, loved, loved everything about that show. It's fun and so refreshingly honest about the quirky and sometimes petty and illogical things people really do in relationships and romantic attractions. From us moving on but not wanting them to. To them moving on but is not being able to. To denying lingering feelings. To being embarrassed about past bad choices and wishing nobody knew about it. To not wanting to risk looking foolish by confessing love to someone who might not love you 'in that way.' This show pokes fun at all of it in a comedic style that's evocative of what was done in Hollywood during its golden age. And with an ensemble cast of second leads and protagonists that are fun, not annoying.

I think a lot of the criticism levied against it comes down to people expecting the show to be different than what it actually is. It seems most people wanted it to be about the webtoon or the relationships with the ex-girlfriends. However, they're just a minor sub-plot. The main story is between two people who love each other deeply but will need to risk it all for that love to fully blossom.

I just can't see how they're going to be able to tie up the main storyline in the time they have left without the show losing its mojo. Anything fresh and unique in this current crop of dramas is getting quashed so the shows look and feel garden-variety. And from a business perspective

And it's part of a trend with TvN that's both puzzling and frustrating.

Like I said, my reaction to that news has been very, very grumpy.

Grapevine really did give viewers a lot to chew on, who'd have thought a Korean drama could actually pull off being a black comedy neo-sageuk? That house was practically a character in itself, and such an apt metaphor for the life choices of the inhabitants - especially Attorney Han.

@ alua

At this stage the risks are no more. At one time the risk was that if Myeong Soo went up against the Director, he could leave or sabotage the movie, it would suffer and so too then would Soo Jin. But now that everything is out and everyone knows that Myeong Soo and Soo Jin are an item, the only things keeping them from fuller commitment are themselves and all the 2nd leads, just out of peevishness and pettiness, as far as I can tell, although the Director may actually be jealous.

As for why they themselves are holding back, it's only Soo Jin who is ... for Soo Jin the risk is that she'll be hurt again... she felt such a fool to admit that she thought MS and she had dated to have it negated in front of all the ex-gfs. Now it's to have that relationship again exposed to all those not particularly friendly eyes, most of whom only want it to fail. Also, she has a lack of confidence when it comes to Ji Ah (MS's 1st love) and is not willing to take the full risk.

Hello, everyone :).

I'm planning on submitting my Korean Red Riding Hood tale. I'm actually on the final stages. Can't believe that I've been rewriting and editing this short story for almost a year. I feel like I can keep on fixing it, but there has to be some stopping point. I guess it doesn't help that I am my only editor, lol! Anyway, I'm aiming to mail it out tomorrow. Whatever happens, happens. I won't find out the result for a long while.

I haven't progressed with the Korean Blue Beard. I have to research quite a bit, but it's hard to find the motivation. I am doing so many other things at the same time. Hopefully, I will manage to write a couple of paragraphs in the near future, lol!

Take care, everyone!

Heard It Through the Grapevine - What an absolutely fantastic drama. And what an ending. There may be better dramas coming in 2015, but it's going to be VERY tough to do better that this.

I know we all wondered just how this could turn out, but I thought the ending was perfectly fitting - Hansong didn't collapse, but in many important ways, the senior Hans lose. Literally every single member of their household buggered off, and even the political alliance that is Han Jung-ho and Choi Yeon-hee's marriage, takes a blow because she decides she can't stand to be around him in that house either and wants to physically get away from him for a while.

I liked how the last two episodes show her gradually weakening in the face of missing Jin-young, but it was way too soon and too unrealistic to even attempt to reconcile with In-sang and Bom. But Bom did put out an olive branch, and I hope she takes it one day. At least she has more of a chance of doing it than her husband (that decor-smashing fit he went on when he learned just who was helping Bom and In-sang take the bar exam and supporting them.....lol. But scary at the same time.) And I really loved the lightening mood as the household staff defect one by one to Bom's side. I especially loved how they all, but especially Secretary Lee, warmed so completely to Bom that they'd go all-out for her that way.

Also the portrayal of In-sang and Bom's relationship as a genuine partnership between individuals with their own thoughts and not some fairytale romance.....it was great that that held true till the end, though of course not without great effort. It was nice to actually see a young couple already IN a relationship as opposed to getting into one. (I also liked the progress of the other couples in the show - Teacher Park and Secretary Lee, and Noo-ri and Yoon Je-hoon. I found it rather cute how she kept saying she should dump him but doesn't make any moves towards it, even when he filed the lawsuit, quit his job and went from Hansong lawyer to ordinary attorney)

All in all, I'm happy with the open ending (and that curt 'end' at the last shot of Attorney Han, going into his bedroom alone, in a house staffed by strangers, said it all, lol)

Grapevine was the best show of the year I think, perhaps of the past 2 or 3 years. And it seems like it actually got pretty good ratings, so not sure why it was cut short.

One of the very few dramas that could actually go for a second season, if they used the same writer/director.

yeah, I'm not sure why they cut it by two episodes either - the ratings were quite good and it was really well-received.

Grapevine is close on the heels of Misaeng as my favourite drama of all time, and oddly despite their vastly different genres, subject matter and style, I feel like they have a similar unconventionality.

(makes me excited to see Im Shi-wan and Go Ah-sung in that movie they signed up to do together, now)

In as much as I was rooting for Yeonhee to cave in to what I believe is the fondness she grew to foster for Bom, Secretary Lee really swooped in and stole my heart. I think it was only fitting since she was the first one among the household staff to meet Bom and the direction of their relationship ever since was no joke either. And Sunsook's undeniably cute with babies.

What was unusual about Grapevine (well, many things were) was that nearly all the side characters were actually three-dimensional. I think that is one of several reasons it turned out so good.

Which is especially strange considering this is a satire where you would expect characters to be a little bit more "cardboardy".

Instead, even side characters are much better developed and much more "personal" than the main characters in character-centric melo K-dramas.

yes, Secretary Lee was one of my favourites precisely because of the evolution of her and Bom's relationship. And I loved how she was at the end - still her graceful self, but so much lighter and happier, as if a weight had come off her shoulders.

She had a wonderful character arc for sure. She started off as a somewhat arrogant woman who knew that her boss, Yeon-hee, is a nutcase. She even sometimes tried to stir up the shit just for her own entertainment once in a while.

Things definitely changed once Bom entered the household. It's like Lee, after her fight with Bom, realises that sometimes the people you serve are actual real life people. And she changes her approach to her job and her life big time. She becomes one of the leaders in the servants rebellion. She confronts Sec Yang. She calls out Teach for his weird world views.
To see her relaxed and happy at the end of the show really drove me to tears.

Hello beanies!
First time commenting open thread here^^

Just start Bad Guys, i know it's late but better late than never eh? And oh boy how amazing this show is!! I literally scream in the middle of the night while marathoning because of ep 9. Can't even bring myself continue watching, my heart beats too fast. My heart bleeds when they shoot who the killer is. I'm in major denial rn :/

Producer - i love the first 3 eps to bits, the whole meta world is interesting and i find the humor is pretty funny. But when u take out all the meta & fun things, it becomes typical kdrama square-love with too much drama. No fun :/ I want the epilogue and meta back.

Exgf club - Haven't watched Misaeng so no idea Byun Yo Han is so good! He is so cute and endearing here. I like his chemistry with Jihyo, totally ship otp. Too bad the 3 ex is pretty much useless. And how the heck director knows everything about everyone? Is he spying them all bcs his day is project-less and boring?

The Lover - Ugh this. Imo this has lots of potential, but it relies too much on the sex-related jokes it seems like going nowhere. I agree with some posters above, sometimes it has good material and good stories but other times it feels like filler. Too bad, i love all casts and characters here.

Non kdrama - anyone follows Game of Throne? That war at the end of ep really freaks me out for real. Keep swearing while watching but then again, the amount of swearing i did while watching GoT is quite unhealthy. I don't remember signing up for another walking dead, but that is epic one T.T

Only managed to watch these. All hail for you who can managed to watch more. Seems my heart is unable to contain too many dramas at a time. Anyway, have a nice weekend everyone!

Hello everyone. A few thoughts on the dramas I'm watching now

(SPOILERS)

School 2015:
Are we going to end each episode with just a cameo by eunbyul? *deadpan look* And soo in's sister's explanation as to why she hold eunbyul responsible had me facepalming a lot. Like seriously with all the build up i thought eunbyul all but killed her directly but then after hearing how she died... i have no words other than just a mere blank look on my face. If she was looking for a person to blame her sister's death, might as well point her finger towards herself and her mom. Why didnt they notice her symptoms? You dont die just like that from encephalomeningitis. They will have various symptoms like nausea, headache etc etc. So next time a little research would help before you start blaming just one person.
Gosh i really don't know who i ship eunbi with. At times i feel like she and taekwang are just adorable together and at times i feel that yi an and eunbi make a lovely pair. Hopefully now that eunbyul is back my poor confused heart can make a decision. (Although it looks like the drama is bending towards yianxeunbi) And i feel like shipping shijin and taekwang too. Their scenes are hilarious. One scene that made me go all awww was when yi an acknowledged eunbi as...well eunbi. but poor taekwang.. Come here boy, i'll give you a proper hug. (and porobably suffocate him in the process)
Another reason that has me hooked me to this drama is the ost list. I love each and every ost in this drama. So many feels <3

Ex-girlfriend club:

One question. Since when did tvn start caring about ratings so much? I was soooo disappointed when i saw that they are cutting down 4 episodes of EGC. This was the drama that balanced out all the dramatic moments in school 2015 and had me rolling on the floor laughing my ass out at the ex girlfriends+MS+SJ scenes. They are a riot together. Im not impressed at all with this decision.

Mask:

Typical makjang drama. But still love it. JJH has so many layers in his character and i want to poke out the villain's eye with a fork whenever he comes on screen. And his sidekick. That's how good they are. I'd like to see more of JJH-BJS dynamic in the coming episodes.

Warm and cozy:

Aaah my head hurts. Someone just remove SWSNBN from my screen. I feel like punching my screen when i see her 24*7 smug expression and monotone dialogue delivery. Thankfully her words and actions dont affect BGW anymore. (Well at least not like the previous episodes where i couldn't decide who to punch between JW and GW and ultimately decided on JW because.. come on who would want to punch YYS with his puppy dog eyes? ;) ) And the last scene in episode 8.. *squeeeeeee* No words required. I hate it and love it at the same time that this drama gives me a reason to stay every time i think of dropping it.

Running Man:

Fun episode. Although i felt like they spent waaaaaay too much time on the first mission. The third game looked...

......so much fun. The second game was hilarious. Kwangsoo-jihyo dynamic is seriously daebak. And the last game reminded me of jimmy fallon's show. With jjampoong and jajang. xD

Hello everyone! Summer is in full throttle in Dubai.

I'm done with Let's Eat S2. I watched the last episode raw. Its just sad that they did not explain why and how Dae-young and Soo-Kyung broke up. But I'm happy with the drama as a whole. I want to see Kwon Yool more. Still if there will be season 3, I'll still watch it.

Producer! Oh how I love thee let me count the ways... CTH, KSH, GHJ.. ok I'll add IU too. I love the admin lady waiting for romance between her and KJK because I saw. I admit that I think it will be difficult to be appreciated by someone who are not familiar with other Korean shows (variety, music and talk shows) but seriously whats stopping you.

Warm and Cozy..Squweeee...So glad that I did not give up on this drama. But seriously my annoyance to Ji-won is not healthy.

I still have to get my hands or eyes on Mask... dunno if I will pick up again the other mask drama (Masked Prosecutor). I stopped at episode 1.

as for Divorce Lawyer.. I hate the fringe of Cho Yeo-Jeong and I think she is overacting at times. I loved her in I Need Romance. My sister told me that I'll get used to it and anyway Yeon Woo-Jin is awesome.

Hi all,
I'm late today because my hubbie wanted to go hiking before it got too hot. It snowed yesterday, but today is hot. Typical for this area.

Watched:
Grapevine--Oh dear, what will I do now. I miss it already. The ending was perfect, reminded me of my own poor father who alienated everyone with his need for control. I would LOVE to see another season, but you know that won't happen.

Warm & Cozy--I am so glad the recap included all the different reiterations in the writing. I noticed them as I watched and was quite impressed. I also love the way the things people say can have two meanings--making it impossible to translate. Really, the show is like poetry. I am also loving the lack of conflict. It feels like I am watching real relationships grow. I wonder if JiWon will now disappear. Wouldn't that be nice?

Mask-- Still need to see episode 4. I do enjoy this show, though.

Other than those, I am behind. I'm thinking of starting A Word from a Warm Heart, but it doesn't play on my Nook. :-(

Have a great week. I'm in training for my summer job all next week, so who knows if I will have time to catch any dramas.

Hey, Beanies! I can't believe it's finally June! I went to my neighbor's graduation party last week, ate tons of food, and then proceeded to get sick that night. Not fun. Really gross. I'll spare you the details. But in the spirit of summer I went bike riding with some friends on Wednesday and got ice cream! It was great! Since then I've been riding every day to the dam in the town over, 10 miles round trip. Let's see how long I can keep it up.

Anyway, on to dramas... I haven't watched an awful lot this past week.

The Producers: I'm currently in the middle of episode 6 and loving it, this show continues to entertain me and that's all I'm asking for, to be honest. I laugh my butt off at least once every episode and giggle throughout so I'm satisfied! Loving the characters.

School 2015: Just started this one, have not yet finished the first episode. I realized that it's been ages since I saw a high school drama and I think I'm going to like this one! Desperately trying to stay away from spoilers!

Coffee Prince: Anddd I finished it! I have to say, I enjoyed it a lot more at the end and loved the last episode. I ended up giving it 9/10 even though it didn't catch me until later than I would've liked. The last couple of episodes really made an impact to me.

Witch's Romance: One more episode left for me to watch! Still cute and enjoyable but I don't think it'll end up one of my all-time favorites. I couldn't stop laughing when Ji Yeon's mom finally found out Dong Ha's age.

Have a great weekend, Beanies!

Coming in late to the party! Happy Friday!

End-of-school week was fun and busy; I finished my Walking Dead dress & got tons of compliments. :)

What I've been watching:

Let's Eat 2: My husband actually said "When's the next episode of our food show?" Heh. Suuuure, he hates Kdramas.

The Lover: Juvenile humor is beginning to wear on me, but I'm still in for the gay boys & their longing.

Missing Noir: Still haven't watched the last episode, as it's not fully subbed yet. ::sigh::

(I've also been catching up on the new season of Ripper Street on BBCAm & it's darkity-dark-dark.)

K-Drama Moment:

So my husband & I went to a Korean bbq place in the next town over, and WOW it was fun.

We started w/kimchi dumplings which were clearly homemade (and HUGE - the size of biscuits). They were spicy & delicious.

Then we ordered bbq - I had marinated pork bulgogi & the Manly Man had galbi. There was so much else I wanted to try, but as our budget was smallish, I just asked if they'd sell me a tiny cup of the kimchi jjigae so I could try it.

They brought a huge platter of meat for each of us, and a bunch of banchan - three types of kimchi (cabbage, cucumber, radish), fish cake, pickled daikon & pickled carrots, sheer slices of radish, bean sprouts, & some sort of miso soup w/tofu in it. Also red pepper paste & bean paste (my surprise love of the night - I want to eat it on everything.)

She also brought a big bowl of the kimchi stew (and didn't charge us for it! So sweet.)

I ate til I thought I would pop. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the table grill - your meat is piping hot & cooked just the way you want it. :)

The kimchi stew was delicious but OMG spicy. I'm not sure I could just sit down & eat it for a meal. But I loved their kimchi & polished it off.

I also really liked the fish cake - I didn't think I would. Next time, I'll try one of the soy-based soups, I think.

The waitress seemed surprised that we'd heard of the restaurant and had eaten at a Korean restaurant before (we were the only non-Asians in the place.)

We also tried the beer I see all the time in dramas – Hite – I can report that it’s much like American lager (I’ll stick w/my British stouts & porters, there.)

It was a great anniversary supper.

Sounds like really food. I think I'd like it all too. My hubby & I went out for Korean food, but he said it was too much work to eat. Don't get that when all you really need to do is shovel it in like they do on TV.

Not any more work than fixing your baked potato at a restaurant.

Here's a shot of the table (minus the kimchi stew & dumplings - well, you can see the dumpling crumbs left on my plate.) It was SO good. And the cool thing is that we found a monthly Korean-food meetup in that next town over, where a bunch of folks pool their money so they can all try new stuff. :)

Wow! Sounds like the anniversary dinner was great, full of yummy food! Glad you enjoyed it.

Loving the "when's our food show" comment by your not-a-kdrama-fan-hubby. ...... *giggling*

I have a language question: I learned "I'll eat well" (pronounced: Jal mokkesmida), but I don't know the past tense for when the waitress comes to ask you how your meal was. Can anyone enlighten me?

School is right around the corner and I just wanna time-travel back to April, not changing anything though. Sigh. College is at my doorstep but I have no idea what I want to do, luckily there's still a year left.

Crime Scene S2 - Hyunmoo is just wow. Flipping props everywhere must've given the staff a headache. Lol at the human clue. Last time there was one, the criminal(worker Kim) had his alibi confirmed. That was when I knew it was Kong.

Masked Prosecutor - Well, it's getting better and I think it's finding its direction. But the shifts in tone are pretty...uhm..you know. The best part is still the OTP. I just hope they go for light and funny rather than revengey melo.

The Lover - I don't find it as funny anymore and I've been using the FF button quite a lot. I'm watching for the dangerous bromance. What will happen to them?

Who Are You: School 2015 - Do you hear that? That's the sound of my heart breaking. I think I cried twice. For Minjoon and the rooftop scene and for Tae Kwang in the wedding. Sigh. I know that that ship is sinking but all I wanted was for Eun Bi to ask TK that question no one ever seems to ask: Are you okay? And Eun Byul is back! So I'll be here hoping that there won't be a love geometry.

Re: Crime Scene S2
Ikr. Hyunmoo and his destroying-props-antics is one of the thing I miss most from the first season. And he always find some clue that diverted the other member attention's from the actual culprit.
I suspected the same about Kong being the culprit, but his acting is so believable (and he usually can't lie without it written over his face so clearly) that I dismissed the idea. Good job, Kong!!

I think I'm a little late to the party, but if anyone's still around...

Currently Watching:

Orange Marmalade (to Ep 3) - I started watching a while ago and kind of stopped to check out the webtoon, but I'll get back to it once the SAT is done tomorrow .__.;; /studyingwhy Although the comments have gotten my interest back again from the sageuk, or whatever's happening.

Superdaddy Yeol (maybe) - I gave up halfway through its airing because of a hiatus for finals and AP exams, but I'll probably finish it soon because I already spent so much time watching it.

I started rewatching Coffee Prince (to ep 6) and Healer (just for Ji Chang-Wook and Park Min Young). The feels~

I kind of watched most of the first episode of Producer (for Kim Soo Hyun) but gave up. I'm not all that interested in variety stuff (and I suppose I miss most of the jokes/references/cameos). Not to mention I once had to watch three straight hours of The Office on a road trip and the interview/out-of-narrative style still haunts me.

Will Watch Soon: Grapevine, Misaeng, I Hear Your Voice, and maaaaaybe Mask. I've heard lots of good things about all of these.

@ Chococat

Yes your "Will watch soon" list are the good ones. They'll ruin you for other shows though. :)

I did not read good reviews for Superdaddy Yeol but I personally would not start or continue it, if there are better shows to watch.

I am re-watching Healer now too... a few of us are commenting on the still very much alive Healer thread Ep 20, btw. :)

To add to the good shows... Liar Game, Kill Me Heal Me, Angry Mom ... if you have not yet watched them.

Hey! xD I might have to join that healer thread sometime.

I haven't seen Liar Game, but I'll add that to the list. I loved KMHM and especially Angry Mom— and I actually watched those as they were airing (for once).

Hey~
So for the saeguk Orange Marmalade thing, it takes place in Joseon era right? I think maybe something important must have happened to our 3 leads because that's when the peace treaty was signed. For now in ep5 though, we're just starting with the romance, and it's gonna be more heartwrenching than modern-day. OM team does saeguk excellently as well, so I'm still on for this. Writernim, I have faith in you~~
I was debating last week whether to drop School2015 or Orange Marmalade, but now I'm dropping Producer for now and will be focusing on School2015 and OM.
Hope everyone had a lovely week!

The OM Saeguk portion so far seems to be slower and better paced. Maybe we will get better character backgrounds and developments from this portion of the show to help us when we revert to the future-present.

Guesses that could be SPOILERS

I'm not sure I'll be continuing with My Love Eun Dong as it will be very melo, I feel. Loved one is married to a cripple and has a son, so how is a guy to feel right to come between a married couple and happy family, just because he cannot or refuses to forget his first love? Is this romantic or sheer selfishness to shake (if on purpose) the world of his loved one. Girl will be torn apart by feelings and guilt and more feelings. Melo choices to make all around with nothing as a win-win situation. I will watch on tenterhooks and will be ready to debunk at a sob. :)

I guess no one is here, after so many days but I have no where to cry, so I came here. I finished MISSING NOIR and how the hell it ended like that?????????

I hope there will be a season 2, there has to be. And please please don't cancel sequel like Three Musketeers... Anyone knows about the rating????

I hope in 2nd season Dae young's wife is found to be alive. Her dead body was not shown, so their first case may be to find Dae Young's wife :) Kang Kim woo was great in the show, can't believe he is doing that weird role in the movie Treacherous!!!! Jo Bo Ah was great and beautiful:)
