Last week’s revelation threw into question everything Do-hyun thought he knew about his identity—and for someone plagued by multiple personalities, that’s a tremendous loss. The veils shrouding the events of the past are ripped away one by one, while the various factions in the present scramble to gain an advantage. With his personalities in hiding and Ri-jin going through her own trials, Do-hyun finds the burden landing squarely on his shoulders. Will he be strong enough to bear it alone?

EPISODE 17 RECAP

Discovering that Ri-jin’s name used to be Cha Do-hyun shakes Do-hyun to his core. Now he understands that he was given Ri-jin’s place on the family register, which allowed Seungjin Group to erase all traces of the girl who lived in the basement.

Do-hyun clutches Se-gi’s stuffed bear to his chest and wails, helpless in the face of this terrible truth. At the family restaurant, Ri-jin also breaks down after finding the photo of her younger self with the woman she thought was Do-hyun’s mother.

Ri-on and their parents come rushing in and hold Ri-jin while she cries, lost in the rush of memories. She’s completely lost to the present, not reacting to her parents’ words, so Ri-on goes to get a sedative.

We flash back to twenty-one years ago, with little Ri-jin (I’ll continue to use their current names to keep things simple) playing on a swing. Her mother scolds her for taking chances, but she doesn’t stay mad for long. A man arrives at the edge of the park; it’s Do-hyun’s grandfather, then-chairman of Seungjin.

He has come to America to convince Seo-yeon to take the reins of Seungjin Group. Joon-pyo has run away, presumably for good, and there is no one as capable as Seo-yeon to take over the company.

Seo-yeon wants nothing to do with the company, but Grandpa plays on her weak point: her daughter’s future. Seo-yeon is dead broke, and her daughter will always face scorn for being born out of wedlock. Grandpa offers her a future as the heir of Seungjin Group, as long as Seo-yeon places her on Joon-pyo’s family register.

Grandma Seo welcomes Seo-yeon into the house under the impression that Ri-jin is Joon-pyo’s child. She cheers up noticeably after seeing Ri-jin, though she wonders where Joon-pyo is, and why he’s not here to see how well his daughter has grown.

Joon-pyo is in hiding with little Do-hyun, living under an assumed identity. He tells Do-hyun that hiding your name can help you live freely, which is what he wants to do in life. His idea of happiness is sailing around in a boat of his own, doing whatever takes his fancy and not getting scolded for it.

Do-hyun promises to buy his father that boat. When he does, they will name it the “Perry Park.”

Do-hyun’s mom badgers Joon-pyo to beg for forgiveness from his family, so that Do-hyun can be placed on the family register. Joon-pyo says he cut all ties, but Mom leaves him with an ultimatum: If he wants to do right by his son, he will return to Seungjin Group.

Accordingly, Joon-pyo takes Do-hyun back to Seoul, promising that Mom will join them soon. This results in the homecoming scene we saw before, when Joon-pyo returns to find Seo-yeon already living in the main residence, with a child he knows can’t be his own.

The chairman won’t allow Joon-pyo’s son to be added to the register, since Seo-yeon’s child is already listed there. Out in the hallway, Grandma Seo hears that Ri-jin isn’t actually her son’s daughter. Gah, the web is getting so tangled!

The children introduce themselves as Cha Do-hyun and Cha Joon-young, and they seem to take to each other immediately. They jump on a trampoline in the yard, laughing as if they don’t have a care in the world.

In the present, Grandma Seo learns that someone has leaked the news of Joon-pyo’s coma, which weakens her position considerably in the eyes of the world. Grandma asks Do-hyun’s mother if she was responsible for this, which she firmly denies.

But no sooner does Grandma leave to do damage control than Mom calls Ki-joon’s father to commend him for putting her information to good use. She reminds him of his promise to place Do-hyun in control of some of Seungjin’s subsidiaries.

Ki-joon overhears the phone conversation between his father and Do-hyun’s mother. He’s curious about what deal is so important that it requires giving away important subsidiaries of Seungjin Group, and to Do-hyun’s mother at that. Dad says he doesn’t need to know, and should simply benefit from the results.

Grandma Seo stalks through the company hallway, icily ignoring Ki-joon’s father outside the elevator. When she reaches her office, however, she finds Chae-yeon waiting for her.

Do-hyun is still in his apartment, calmer now after coming to terms with the truth of his name. He has learned that there was a request to change Cha Do-hyun’s gender as listed on the registry from female to male, and suspects that this is the role his grandmother played in the events of twenty-one years ago.

Chae-yeon has come to Grandma Seo to propose a deal: Her family’s shares in exchange for Grandma supporting her relationship with Do-hyun. Chae-yeon also asks that Grandma give Do-hyun real power once she strengthens her position, and pointedly requests that Grandma be the only in-law relation that she will have in marriage.

Do-hyun is exercising when Chief Ahn tells him about the news article outing Joon-pyo’s coma. Chief Ahn wants to know whether he’ll go to Grandma Seo, since even though she’s been dealt a serious blow she’s not the type to ask for help. Isn’t Do-hyun worried that Ki-joon’s family might take over Seungjin Group?

“That can’t happen,” Do-hyun declares. He’s going to make Seungjin Group his, no matter what. But he wants to let Grandma Seo stew in her own mess a while longer, so that she’ll be desperate enough to come looking for him first.

Chief Ahn delivers a photograph of the staff members who worked in the Seungjin mansion on the day of the fire. Do-hyun looks through their faces and recognizes Ri-jin’s mother, whom he met before while pretending to be Perry Park.

Ri-jin’s family has called Dr. Seok to check on her, and he reassures them that she’s physically healthy. But he asks if anything happened recently to give her a shock, and Dad just says that getting fired from her job as “that chaebol’s physician” upset her. In her own way, says Dad, Ri-jin took a lot of pride in that job.

After seeing the picture, Do-hyun surmises that it was Ri-jin’s mother who rescued her from the fire all those years ago. Chief Ahn asks if he recognizes anyone in the picture, but a call comes in from Dr. Seok before Do-hyun can explain.

Dr. Seok tells Do-hyun about Ri-jin’s collapse. Although he didn’t tell the family, he guesses that Ri-jin was reacting to the stress of suddenly recalling a memory. “Are you two recovering your lost memories one by one?” he asks. Dr. Seok wonders if the two of them are tangled up in something dangerous.

Do-hyun only cares about Ri-jin and whether she’s okay. Dr. Seok assures him that she’s healthy, but the danger only really surfaces after she wakes up. She may experience “Repetition Compulsion,” which is a psychological phenomenon in which trauma victims reenact events from their past (there are different ways in which this can happen, but two of them happen to be sequential nightmares and hallucinations).

Ri-jin finally wakes up with Mom sitting by her bedside. On the verge of tears, Mom says that if things were going to be so hard for her, Ri-jin should have come to her instead of crying alone.

Seeming calmer now, Ri-jin reveals that she remembers that Mom saved her from the fire, and that her name used to be Do-hyun. But the knowledge only leaves her with more questions, specifically why she and Do-hyun had their names taken from them.

Ri-jin reassures Mom that she likes her name, and that she was always grateful her parents gave it to her and accepted her into the family. But she also liked Do-hyun’s name (not to mention the man she thought it belonged to). “What do I call him now?” she asks, beginning to cry.

Do-hyun throws up in his bathroom, tormented by the guilt brought on by his memories. He thinks back to when he first introduced himself to Ri-jin as Cha Do-hyun, only now those words carry a very different meaning.

A stress headache is triggered, and Do-hyun staggers to his study to find medicine. But in his medicine drawer he finds a message from Ri-jin, telling him to watch the video she left if he needs medicine.

Do-hyun puts the flash drive into his computer and calls up the video that Ri-jin made. She makes a hilarious mic-testing noise and addresses the camera: “Are you watching, Cha Do-hyun? Are you listening, Cha Do-hyun?”

In the video, Ri-jin scolds Do-hyun for relying on medicine to deal with his issues instead of overcoming everything with her, the way he promised. He said he would replace all his bad memories with good memories, which is one of the reasons Ri-jin wanted to ride the Snowflake Train with Do-hyun.

Ri-jin goes on to apologize for hesitating and denying her feelings. Now she will say it directly, and she asks Do-hyun not to be shocked at what she has to say: “I like you.”

Knowing what he does now, watching this video is the purest torture for Do-hyun. Tears stream down his face and he punches the desk repeatedly, unable to do anything for the woman he loves.

Ri-on finds Ri-jin in her room and gets mad at her for avoiding her family. Mom is cooking up a storm to comfort her and Dad’s heart is breaking for his beloved daughter, but Ri-jin insists on suffering alone.

Ri-on reminds her that he wants a sister who fights back, and says that if she won’t do that, she isn’t his sister. “Don’t be like that,” Ri-jin cries, holding him back. She says that with Ri-on by her side, she was never fearful as a child. The only thing she ever feared was him not being her brother.

After Ri-jin apologizes, Ri-on makes her promise to eat enough and tell the family when she’s having a hard time. She thanks him wholeheartedly for being her brother, and he leads her out of her room in search of food.

Ri-jin and Ri-on take their dog for a run along the river, racing each other and laughing for the first time in a while. Ri-jin tugs on Ri-on’s hood and hops on his back, and when the siblings are exhausted they lie down next to each other in an open field.

Without speaking, the two carry on a complete conversation. Ri-jin tells Ri-on how grateful she is that he was willing to share their parents’ love, which otherwise would have been his alone. Ri-on teases her for being so corny, but turns serious when he thanks her for loving him.

Alone in his apartment, Do-hyun picks himself back up after the emotional blow of Ri-jin’s video. He dresses in work clothes and heads outside, only to be intercepted by an important visitor rolling up in a fancy car.

Grandma Seo rolls down the window and tells Do-hyun to get in. He knows what she wants, however, and says that she’s awfully haughty for someone who needs his help. In return for his cooperation, she offers to tell him the whole truth about what happened on the day of the fire twenty-one years ago.

Do-hyun rides with Grandma to the hospital where Dad is still deep in his coma. She asks Do-hyun to promise that after learning the truth, he will return to Seungjin Group. Do-hyun merely promises to consider it, after he hears what Grandma has to say. She begins her story of the day of the fire, which started out as the happiest day of her son’s life.

Joon-pyo plays the gracious host, welcoming guests to Seungjin Group’s party. Among the guests are Ki-joon’s parents, looking slightly disgruntled, and Chae-yeon’s outspoken mother.

Grandma Seo goes into the kitchen to give last-minute instructions to the catering staff, which includes Ri-jin’s mother (not her biological one, who by this point already died in the car crash).

After Grandma leaves, little Do-hyun comes in and asks for more food. He shovels snacks into a plastic bag and takes what the cook gives him, saying he would prefer to carry it himself. After he leaves, Ri-jin’s mom talks to a gossipy coworker about the complicated Seungjin family tree, fishing for information about Ri-jin.

Do-hyun’s mother preps him for his introduction to society, since the world did not know he was living there until today. She reminds him to work hard and inherit Seungjin Group so that she can live openly as the lady of the house.

Joon-pyo addresses the assembled guests. He thanks them for being there and announces that he has a son who will follow him as Seungjin Group’s successor. The rumors start to fly immediately.

Ki-joon’s mother gossips with some other high-society ladies about this news, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the former chairman’s death. It’s pretty clear, after all, who benefited the most from the tragedy.

Little Do-hyun sneaks through the hallway to reach the basement, but he’s stopped by Ri-jin’s mom, who asks him where the basement is. Just then Dad enters the hallway, and Do-hyun ducks away to avoid notice. When Dad sees that Do-hyun isn’t in his room, he marches immediately to the door that leads to the basement… luckily, Ri-jin’s mother was watching from around a corner.

Do-hyun finds Ri-jin in the basement and apologizes for being late. He tells her to pack everything and run away with him. They’ll take the train, he says, and go far away. Ri-jin’s face lights up when she hears about the train, and they rush to the door. But when it opens, Do-hyun’s father stands there with a blood-chilling expression.

Do-hyun immediately starts to beg forgiveness, but Dad shoves him out of the basement and shuts the door. Do-hyun cries and pounds on the door in vain.

In the present, Grandma Seo tells Do-hyun how she left the party to search for Joon-pyo. But on the way, she saw someone setting the fire. And the person who set that fire… was none other than Do-hyun.

Grandma Seo yells that Do-hyun is responsible for her son being in a coma, while Do-hyun grabs the railing on the bed for support. She explains how she had no choice but to cover everything up, or else people would find out about her son’s weakness and, even worse, what happened in the basement.

Do-hyun leaves the hospital room, the present melding with his memories. He remembers pounding against the closed door, when Se-gi’s voice floats across his mind, offering to take on the burden that is too much for him. He looks down at a tin of “New Century” matches (Shin Se-gi means “New Century”). His tears stop, and his expression grows fixed and cold.

We see little Se-gi in his first appearance ever, dragging a canister of oil all the way down the steps to the basement room. He coats the floor with gasoline and tosses a match, watching the flames begin to roar. In voiceover, Se-gi says that he was the one to save the child. Collapsed in the hallway outside his father’s hospital room, Do-hyun’s fingers tap the floor in a way that spells trouble…

At the restaurant a little later, Ri-jin goes outside and finds Se-gi waiting for her. “I’m sorry I’m late,” he says, and holds out his hand.

COMMENTS

First of all, Saya’s definitely taking chances by saying we’re not friends anymore—I assure you, words will be had. We’re besties, Saya, and don’t you forget it!

On to the show. I’m still a little mad at Do-hyun, but he suffers so much as a result of his choices that I can’t help feeling sorry for him too. Many of you pointed out that as frustrating as Do-hyun’s martyr complex can be, it’s in line with his personality as it developed over years of cleaning up his alters’ messes alone. And Ji Sung, as always, infuses Do-hyun with such passion and force that I could forgive him pretty much anything.

Before we get to the heart of the episode, I have to say I’m glad Chae-yeon is trying to get her revenge. Ki-joon’s family treated her like a bundle of stock options, and now she’s using exactly what they coveted most about her to get back at them. It’s lovely poetic justice, but unfortunately for her it’s hardly the way to win Do-hyun’s heart. Chae-yeon’s going to get hurt again before this whole mess is wrapped up, and I’ve come to like her character enough to feel bad about that… kind of. A little.

I loved Ri-jin’s reaction to the truth of her name, and how it contrasts with Do-hyun’s guilt. Do-hyun thinks he took Ri-jin’s name away from her. She was abused in his place, which in his mind makes it his fault.

But Ri-jin thinks differently, and it shows when she tells her mother that “we had our names taken away.” Ri-jin may have been the only one getting hit, but both children were victims of abuse. Ri-jin knew that from the very moment she regained her memories; Do-hyun, on the other hand, may need some time to figure that out.

I hope Do-hyun did some serious thinking when he saw Ri-jin’s video. She told him what I wanted him to already know: They promised to fight together and replace bad memories with good memories. So why does he insist on crying alone? Do-hyun needs someone—preferably Ri-jin—to tell him the same thing Ri-on told his sister in this episode: It’s okay to let people help you.

It was really nice to get some coherence to the events of the past. The Seungjin tragedy finally gained an intelligible shape, even if it’s as depressing as we were coming to expect. The origin of the Perry Park persona was a nice touch, giving us insight into Do-hyun’s relationship with his father before it was twisted by jealousy, grief and madness. How different might things have been if Do-hyun’s mother hadn’t pushed the family back into the spotlight in search of wealth?

Then there’s Se-gi’s first appearance, which wasn’t entirely unexpected but was properly blood-chilling. Maybe his logic was a little flawed—setting a fire outside the basement doesn’t exactly increase Ri-jin’s chances of survival—but then again, he was seven and seriously traumatized. At the very least, Little Se-gi throws shade like a boss.

I am SO PUMPED that Se-gi returned at the end of the episode, because Se-gi is not the type to let anything keep him from Ri-jin, not even his own guilt. Now that we’re nearing the last week, I want Ri-jin to stop being protected and start getting angry. She has more reason to get back at Seungjin Group than anyone, so I hope the boys who are currently falling over themselves to protect her decide instead to splash some metaphorical gasoline around and ask her to light the match. Playtime’s over, kids—time to fight back.

Been waiting for the recap as well, lol.

I am amazed that I initially ignored this drama. It is truly one of the best written Kdramas or dramas period. There is something about the writing that shows that this was a carefully planned project by the writer. Probably many years in the making, just waiting to be made into a drama or movie. This is the writer's baby.

I hope for the writer's sake, this isn't his or her's the Sixth Sense, like that movie's threshold for M. Night Shyamalan. Since the thrill of, "I see dead people" and the success of that movie, Shyamalan has been chasing the same genius/magic.

LOL, how did I get into this train of thought. Seriously, KMHM is truly a masterpiece of screenwriting. I can see it being made into a Hollywood thriller.

p.s. Kudos to the writer for showing that child abuse and other social ills exist in "our society is homogenous" South Korea.

like you, I initially pointedly ignored this drama as well. I got into it because an episode of Jekyll was late on soompi and to pass the time I switched on ep 1 of kill me, heal me. the idea was to pass the time until hyun bin's drama came on but before I knew it I was into ep 3 and hyun bin was consigned to the dust bin of history.

this is a great drama with very dark undertones I have not encountered in any kdramas before. imagine child abuse and attempted patricide then threw in multiple personality disorder and coverup...it's too good to be true!

to the writer, wow....congratulations for giving us this intelligent, funny and very compassionate drama. to the production team...keep up the good work. and to the actors....you are tops in my list. may your tribe increase!

Girl, ur story is similar to mine. I started watching KMHM because of Hyde, Jekyll Me. It was in the early stages where the two were really getting compared and HJM's writer was throwing a hissy-fit over his show's less than desirable ratings. People were raving so hard about KMHM that I decided to check it out, and before I knew it, I had binge-watched episodes 1-6. Boy the wait for ep 7 was so torturous. So thank you HJM for letting me see the light ;P

And can I say, This episode rocked.

me too, after reading the article of webtoon writer claiming KMHM plagirize HJI..it made me curious,..thats when i started watching the 1st ep..and captivated by segi' intro w/auditory hallucination bgm..and decided to marathone 1-4eps...it was the first week of HJI so i check upon its 1-2 ep...but i stop there and only KMHM i started to follow every wed-thurs..maybe ill just marathone HJI when it finished airing

The writing is superb - all the details are tying in so well - even the (excessive) flashbacks showed us layer and depth depending on the memories of the person, the perspective of the story, unraveling piece by piece the "game" that had set up to tangle these kids' lives.

The tie in - for the mom's big cooking thing - it wasn't just a 'funny quirk' but actually relevant - because she was a caterer- of course she'd be used to cooking things in a bigger scale!
The tie in for trains, 10:00, name and declaration of "I am Cha Do-hyun", the Perry Park origin, fluctuations of power (even in one character - like Do-hyun's mom seemed weak and then strong and then powerless but effective and Grandma who was strong, but then weak, powerful with the $ and company, but weak because of different factions)

this is so well written - you know that the writer has revised and worked on this to be COMPLETE story, and not based on ratings and fan service-only type meandering.... !!

Thanks for the recap! I kinda thought Ri jin might get angry because he 'stole' her name but no, she realized that both of them are victims, and I love her character for that. She may be loud at times, but she's logical and smart.

yeah, the name switch/erasure was a really chilling and effective way to suppress both children and their memories. Poor kids. And Ri-jin is way too compassionate to blame the people who love her for anything, especially Do-hyun. Though she still gets mad at Yo-na, ha.

I do not think it in kdrama for the 'good' girl to get revenge, as lest not for themselves, it just never happens, This drama skip the mental illness reminds me a lot of My 19 Year Old Sister-in-Law in many ways, with the abused child the stealing on her inheritance, and I image somehow this may have the same ending..ie all the baddies 'reflecting' on thier sins, though I do hope just for once the bad guys really get a taste of what they dish out..but as i say, i just do not seeing it happening.

Agreed. Ri Jin is logical and smart as a whip which makes her an atypical kdrama heroine. The fact she doesn't even try to hide her intelligence makes me admire her more.

Other things I like about Ri Jin is that she drives her own car, or, at least, her brother's. No public transportation (bus) for her! This is quite refreshing to see. I was getting sick of watching kdramas where the female lead would have to ride the bus to get anywhere while the male lead is a chaebol who had any number of cars.

I like that Ri Jin's family is quite well off - they own their own business and are not poor. So the income disparity between Oh Ri Jin and Cha Do Hyun is not a factor in this case. Her brother is a famous author in his own right and quite accomplished, even if few people know that. So the whole thing is nicely balanced.

It's because they need to play out that kdrama trope where the poor heroine's sitting forlornly at the bus stop, and the hero pulls up with a screech of tyres and orders her to 'get on'... :)

I noticed that Sero in Heart to Heart also drives herself (you go, gal!), but she's not the lead female.

I want the Seungjin Group secrets to come out, but I actually want Writer Omega's secrets to come out too!

I was never too fond of the flashbacks initially, because they were so repetitive and took time away from Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum when the child actors featured were just about ok (not exactly little Yeo Jin-gu/Kim Yoo-jung levels). But in light of the revelations from episode 16 and 17, the flashbacks really work. Especially the appearance of little Se-gi. Now that's a chilling expression if I've ever seen one!

and even though Do-hyun is my favourite, I do love the return of Se-gi and the story of his and Perry's origins. I knew we weren't ready to let go of him yet! Also Dad and Grandma are real pieces of work, and I would not be surprised at all if Grandma engineered the accident that took out her husband and Min So-yeon so they could hide her daughter and the abuse inflicted on her. Worst family ever, even Ki-joon looks like less of a snake than Do-hyun's ma, dad and grandma because at least he's straight-up about being in it for himself and not pretending to be looking out for Do-hyun. Same with Chae-yeon, she may be about to be relegated to unwanted second lead territory but at least she has a spine.

I can't wrap my head where I've heard of that phrase before, "Are you watching? Are you listening?" Can someone tell me which drama was it from? I know this drama tends to infuse some phrases from other shows and dramas.

On another note, I love how they show us Rijin is Dohyun's achor to consciousness. When he tried to reach for his meds, he heard ringing in his head, which signify a personality change, but Rijin's video message quickly turned that around, just like how she was able to call him to consciousness when Yosub tried to kill himself. At its core, we know Rijin is his root of DID, so naturally only she can heal him and it's a nice touch to be able to see that. I won't spoil it here but we can see another example of that in ep 18.

I'm taking chances here, but what you're thinking might be from one of the funniest lines from My Love from the Stars, Jeon Ji Hyun taking her Bbong Bbong-ie for a drive, and she sings this, "Are you listening? Are you watching?" in her VERY AWESOME rap. LOL, very classic.

If I'm not mistaken (they might have gotten it somewhere even older, IDK), the phrase is popularized in the song sang/produced by GDdragon and Jung Hyungdon pairing in 2013 Infinity Challenge Music Festival. The song is Haebollago (Going to Try) (:

No. That's not it, I went to check and she was rapping about her name, LOL. In my memory, someone was shouting that phrase like to a dead lover or someone who's far away. It wasn't from a song either. I've been racking my brains for a few day. :(

I believe its from one of Jeon Ji Hyun's older movie.. Its either "Windstruck", "My Sassy Girl" or "White Valentine".. Isn't that the phrase that RiOn said after he told his family about his first meeting with Perry Park on the plane? I think it's in episode 5. He said the way SeGi recorded video for himself is such a beautiful narcissism or something like that. And since then he always recorded a message for himself when he is feeling down, saying "Are you watching, Oh RiOn? Are you listening, Oh RiOn?"
Is that what you mean?

I hate how Segi's logic to lighting the fire is to save Rijin, yet he endangered her because the place he set fire was exactly down the basement. That's the one flaw that bothered me a lot, understandably he's a broken child, but that does not excuse his haughtiness that he saved the child. I love Dohyun's response to it is exactly in line with his character, he couldn't deal with the possibility that he could have hurt Rijin so he locked his consciousness away and let Segi took charge. Sorry for the spoiler but I'm glad that Rijin addressed that issue in ep 18 and took the word right out of my mouth, but I still dislike how they brush this matter off like it's insignificant because Rijin survived anyway. Why? Why couldn't he just ask for help from the many adults in the party and choose to put everyone lives in danger instead? But then if he didn't, Dohyun wouldn't have his DID and get wrapped in the guilt for so long.

You know, I wonder if Little Se Gi was just thinking of ending it for *ALL* of them (him, Little Ri Jin, his father, his halmoeni, Seugjin Group...everything). I wonder if he just wanted to end the cycle of fear and abuse. Perhaps he didn't really think any of them would survive, and figured that being dead would be better for him and Ri Jin than living with the abuse that they were both experiencing.

I actually think what Do Hyun/Se Gi did make sense in the capacity of a 7 y.o child. Children that age just don't really have the capacity to think of real consequences on what happen beyond. Asking them for that is just unfair for the child, cause that's not really how their brain wired yet, it would take some years before they develop that. Also, why should he ask for other adults' help, in his mind pretty much all the adults he should be able to ask help for are always bystanders in Ri Jin's abuse. This child would not trust any adults in any means.

Children that age may not be matured enough to handle a lot of things, but I'm pretty sure they'd know fire is fatal and what consequences it'd bring. The bystanders in this case have always been his family, but they have some many high social standing guests that day, he could have alerted someone. Understandably, he might not be in the right mind, but I still feel they handled the issue too lightly.

Honestly, I think Little Se Gi had a pretty good grasp of the situation: no one in that house was going to help Do Hyun.

Clearly Grandmother knew and was letting this happen, his kind father had turned into an abusive nutcase, and that abusive nutcase had now locked himself inside a windowless room with Do Hyun. Se Gi would know by now that his father and grandmother are inexplicably powerful people, and that very few others would cross them. But fire is something that everyone reacts to, no matter their social standing.

He may not have known exactly how it would shake out, but a fire would make everyone evacuate and get his father out from that room, at which point he could scream about Do Hyun to anyone who would listen. And for the first objective, it worked.

No, I think Segi operated on his guts feelings. He thought it'd attract attention, but he didn't think far ahead because he fell out of conscious and Dohyun came back right after he set the place on fire. Plus, he said to Rijin thankfully his first love is still alive, meaning he did think if Rijin died it'd be his fault but thank God she didn't so he basically saved her. I mean I get that he did what he thought he had to, but to take credit for something that could horribly go wrong seem so wrong, you know?

I think everyone is kind of right about this matter. Although he wasn't sure whether she'd survived the fire, the moment Se Gi (magically) recognised her as an adult he believed that he'd saved her, which was possibly why he became even stronger as an alter. Little Se Gi certainly seemed to think that there was no other way to save Ri Jin other than pouring destruction on his family's head. To me this shows how dangerous and reckless Se Gi is, and how he is the product of utter helplessness of Do Hyun's situation. It is only right that Do Hyun has always striven to tamp down the attitudes and instincts in himself that Se Gi embodies.

You also have to remember that what he saw was the matches. Even adults, in desperate moments, we try to find way to escape. In that moment, he saw the matches. Thinking there's no other way, he took it and take the chance that will take His dad's attention and stop what he was doing.

I feel that all Little Se Gi/Do Hyun wanted was to find a way to go to Little Do Hyun/Ri Jin again, since his father pushed him out of the basement. So the next logical thing to do would be to get rid of that "obstacle" or to make him disappear (and maybe also so that the father wouldn't be able to hurt Little Do Hyun/Ri Jin again). Is it slightly twisted, though? ... I guess, but it does seem logical to me.

He was trying to get the door open. He was a little kid in a foreign world filled with scary adults who had not saved RiJin from beatings before. Why would he think they would help her now? His own sweet dad had turned into a monster. His best friend was locked in, being beaten and maybe killed by the monster his dad had become and he, RiJin's only help or solace, was locked out unable to help. He was just single-mindedly trying to get the door open. Besides, at that point, faced with his utter impotence to protect RiJin, he had already become an alter, Segi. Would we expect the adult Segi to find a nice person to ask for help?

I think the context of that scene was that, by the day of the party, things were at crisis point anyway, and Do Hyun (boy) probably felt that things couldn't go on like this any longer.

That's why he packed his bags with all that food. He visited her in the basement, even though it wasn't 10pm. He told Ri Jin that they were going to run away together on the train, and that he had money. He grabbed her hand and they were both heading out that door, only to be confronted by Dad.

He may have tried to help her escape before, but it felt like this was the last chance, and he was desperate. When their escape was foiled and Dad started abusing her again, Do Hyun must have been in despair.

I tend to agree that Do Hyun/Se Gi wanted it all to end. He just wanted it all to stop. In his child's mind, there was probably little difference between the two, and he was past thinking or caring whether people died. If he stopped the abuse, then he saved her, period. It might be that simple.

What this episode truly established during those flashbacks is that there wasn’t just one person responsible for what happen 21 years ago. This reminds of Secret in which there wasn’t just one reason that Minhyuk’s lover died. Kudos to Ji Sung and Hwang Jungeum for picking such multifaceted and brilliant projects once more. (Can I ask for a Round 3?) Dohyun’s father wasn’t simply a bad guy who did bad things for the sole purpose of being bad. We see how Joon Pyo’s coddling mother, blind to her child’s faults, created an inferiority complex within him, as he ventured into the outside world and failed to measure to the standards he thought he could scale. How Joon Pyo’s father made things worse by constantly comparing him to Soyeon, how Soyeon shunned him for another (the heart wants what it wants right?), and how he walked away from it all to a more peaceful life. I actually respect him for having the courage to do that, and pitied him all the more during that bright happy conversation about the boat, because we know exactly how his future turned out. I can understand why he cracked but I can’t ever forgive or condone what he did. Because two broken lives remain in the wake of those awful months 21 years ago, and we have yet to see if they’ll heal.
I adore Dohyun but as level upon level of guilt comes crashing down upon him, one thing is very, very clear. Segi was right to some extent. Dohyun isn’t really that capable of handling the truth. I’d even say that he’s weaker now than he was a few episodes ago. Back then, he had Rijin’s love to anchor him. Now he doesn’t even felt like he has the right to look at her, to hold out his hand when she’s hurting. Which is what she desperately needs. So he huddles up in his little corner at home, hurting, aching, burning with rage, and unable to do anything about it. This is where Segi the Magnificent differs drastically, he knows what he wants and he’ll go after it regardless of what happens. Dohyun seems to be aware of this on some level, hence why he doesn’t fight Segi the Magnificent this time, letting him take over. And just who does Shin Segi go to but the person who needs him the most, Rijin. I can't help but notice that whenever Rijin's taken away, by her well-meaning brother, by Dohyun's scheming mother, Segi always comes out in full force prepared to do battle to get her back. He always goes up to her and stretches out his hand while Dohyun sits in sorrow and waits for her to do so. See this is why I love Segi so much, there’s none of this suffering guilt all alone business. I understand that abuse is a ridiculously difficult thing to get over and that the guilt likely isn’t going to go away easily, but this separation isn’t doing much for Dohyun and Rijin. Ri On’s distracting her which is wonderful but she needs to face up to those memories and for that she needs to link hands with the fellow sufferer who was tormented along with her.

Segi gets this and goes after her, and honestly if I couldn’t fall more in love with the man, I’d swear I already did. I’m not surprised that Segi was the one who set the fire either. Dohyun snapped at that party 21 years ago, just like his father did, but something different came of it. The violent entity that arose wasn’t there to maim but protect. And protect Rijin he will, as the preview showed, from a blast from his past, from Seungjin and from anything and everything that tries to prevent him from being with the one he loves, Healer style. And you can bet that Rijin’s going to do the same for him.
Perhaps it’s because I’ve gotten far too attached to them, but I can’t help but reiterate that I hope Dohyun gets to keep all the alters. Especially after episode 18, I can’t help but think that rather than merging the personas, being able to control them would prove better for both them and him. I just don’t want to think of Segi, dear Segi, (and Yosub!) who wants to live so so badly, having to disappear. So, please show, how about we just keep them?

I believed Mr. X was already introduced to us, by having all the 7 personality presented. We have Cha do Hyun, Shin Se Gi, Perry Park, Ahn Yo Sub, Ahn Yo Nah, Nana, and of course his original self before the split when he is young which is Cha Joon Young.

I tend to disagree with this. I don't think his inferiority complex was created by his mother. I think his complexes were as a result of constant put downs by his father. Perhaps his mother tried to make up for all his neglect by coddling him. And in most families where one parent is a harsh disciplinarian, the other parent tries to over compensate by being "too caring".

If one doesn't love one's child enough to take the child's side and puts a company and a competent spouse ahead of the welfare of one's child, it says a lot about Joon Pyo's fathers priorities. Joon Pyo knew he was not important or valued by his father. It's enough to screw anyone up and make them twisted.

The coddling->inferiority may not be quite linear like that, but it certainly had a huge effect on Joon-pyo.

When his dad was alive, the overpowering disapproval shrunk Joo-pyo's spirit - he could never measure up and he wanted freedom. But then they died in the accident - his disapproving dad and his unattainable Min Seo-yeon and all he heard from then on was his mom's coddling/overbearing expectations. So I can imagine how after hearing years of negative "you're not good enough" change to "you're the best, son" "Be the president and heir, son" from his mom on top of feeling powerful (for beating a small child?!? for being a survivor/last one left standing?) led to a confidence we saw at his party. The imposing presence of his dad was now gone, only a memory and a portrait and the present was Joon-pyo being 'heir' so yea, as well meaning as grandma was, she messed him up too.

YAYYYYY!!!!! SE GI IS BACK! I have to say, I have missed him in his absence. Oh typical broken bad boy attractiveness.When he is gone, I long for him to come back because he infuses the story with such excitement. However, when he came back, I am usually reminded how destructive and volatile his character is, vaporizing any romantic notions I had in previous episodes. With him being so intense and hurt, I am compelled to want to "fixed" him which I know is unrealistic and unhelpful. I will miss him once this drama ends. His look in this episode is amazing; combining se gi's guyliner and do hyun's flat hair works fabulously.

Se Gi listens to no one cuz Se Gi distrusts adults. He remembers only too well how helpless kids can be in some situations and how the grownups & society and their laws who are supposed to protect them, fail to do so.
Thus he disregards them completely.

Had he been capable of more controlled violence and with more time on his hands he could even became a head of some mighty criminal organisation; one capable even to challenge & shake sheuyin group.
we've seen that he can well enough use his carisma to influence, inspire people... even cause them to fell madly in love with him ;)
I mean, tell me girl, honestly, how long will you resist se gi's wild, untamed approach before your defenses will crumble and fall?

But as for now undeluted, unhinged se gi is completely unfit for modern society and will land all the alters in a closed mental institute. So I guess it's a good thing he is started mixing up with cdy.

That's one of the things I really appreciated in this episode: the illustration of how strong Ri Jin's support network is compared to what Do Hyun had.

So they both had happy childhoods, followed by a period when Ri Jin's physical abuse was almost matched by Do Hyun's mental abuse (Ri Jin saw Dad as an evil man who beat her, but Do Hyun had to deal with a loving father who became a monster), and then Ri Jin ended up in a home where she was dearly loved while Do Hyun ended up in a poisoned home full of manipulators and opportunists. And that last phase lasted for 20 years.

It really clarifies how DH became who he is, and also how Ri Jin is so resilient.

Strange how cdy's dad transformed into an abuser...a weak, not very bright man who was mistreated by his father and spoiled by his mother and bullied by his wife ;) still, its hard for me to accept his personality shift, from a gentle, sensitive man who didn't want to traumatize his kid by arguing with his wife to a child abuser who gets of hitting (and maybe doing other things, that closed door freaked me out)

We already know that Ri Jin's mom and grandfather died in the car accident. I think by this point, we can safely assume that it was just an accident. Going by the way the show's been handling its reveals so far, they would have mentioned something more about the accident before now, if it was important. Plus, a murder conspiracy would be a little too much on top of everything else.
I don't think the closed door necessarily means that he sexually abused her. It could just mean that he didn't want Do Hyun getting in the way or trying to stop him or seeing him beat the girl, which is horrific enough by itself.
Also, while I was watching the show, I could hear sounds of objects being thrown and crashes from behind the door, so I don't think that what you think happened, actually did.

I don't really think it was that kind of abuse either - the particular prospect some of us are considering isn't likely to have entered the mind of a seven-year-old, he likely thought Ri-jin was going to get a really bad beating and might even die.

(also let's look on the pragmatic side, this is network tv, they would never imply that kind of abuse against a child, the physical abuse alone is bad enough)

but I agree with Miranda that the fact of the door being closed does in hindsight seem like a first, the straw that broke the camel's back enough to bring out Se-gi.

@pogo This show, continuing the blessed work of 'it's okay, thats love' discusses some tabu themes, but there are some darker things they only hint at (I guess they dont think its appropriate to go till the end). For example, feelings between siblings (guaranteed, no real incest, dear watchers) or the situation when the son joon pyo left the house and later grandpa followed the beau, charming and competent daughter-in-law asking her to return from overseas, giving her everything is she'll only return... (thats why the reason for the breakup they give seems forced to me, and rijin's biological father is really unreal & ghost-like, while gramps strikes me as a charismatic alpha who may have found a spiritual, aspiring partner)

He had no reason to live after he broke up with his 'haughty' but much desired, brilliant, clever wife. Remember, he kept her photo in the poetry book he loved most. I dont think he had so deep feelings towards his scheming, conniving, vulgar wife. Then he used rijin as a substitute to punish his wife for... not returning his feelings, for stealing his fathers love and approval, for returning with a bastard when he tried moving on and to calm his inferiority complex.
But if he is so delusional and when he looks at a kid he sees her mom... if rijin is a substitute for the woman he still desires. .. well

I will concede your point about the faux incest since they seemed to put that in as a red herring, but I have to disagree with your gramps and So Yeon as alpha and spiritual partner theory. One, because eww, so skeevy, but more importantly, because gramps thought, like every other chaebol dad, ever, that his son wanting his own life meant he was worthless. If Joon Pyo didn't want to run the company, he needed someone who could, who happened to be So Yeon.
Plus, according to Ri Jin's mom, their marriage was arranged, so it was likely Joon Pyo never loved her in the first place, considering his reaction to her when he came back and what he said to his father about her.

@shinayame My impression was that joon pyo did love rijin's mom... at least that's what the mistress (cdy's mom) said when sitting near his comatose bed.
But you may be right about joon pyo' s escspe: I was operating under the assumption that he run away as he couldn't meet the high expectations of his father who choose his wife over him as a ceo as she was more talented. Being neglected and underestimated by his father he chose a new life and a more 'easy' women. Maybe it was vice versa.

I still maintain that for gramps rijin's mom was much more than just a daughter-in-law. Especially because gram and joon pyo were so close. Their mother-son relationship was extreme: his mother doted on him and adored him to the extent she overlooked even child abuse. Everything her son did was fine: I am sure that created the conflict in the family in the first place which eventually ended with joon pyo leaving, the cold welcome between father and son upon his return and maybe even caused the car accident.

You're right about Grandma Cha and Joon Pyo, she did dote on him obsessively, but I don't know if it's the age gap or if it's because she was married to his son or what, but I still can't see So Yeon and Grandpa as anything more than in-laws. Maybe he considered her his daughter, since his son so disappointed him. Ki Joon's dad seemed to want the company since way back then, so maybe he though So Yeon was the only person he could trust to make sure that it didn't fall into his hands and so he had to bring her back no matter what.
Having said all this, there was a time when I considered that there might be something more there, but ultimately, this is how I think it all happened.

True, she isn't. The thing is, I am not sure jon pyo wouldnt become more twisted and would stop 'only' at beating her. In fact, maybe that's exactly what se gi had stopped from happening. Let's admit: if he hadnt set the whole house on fire joon pyo would have completely destroyed both kids and himself, and no one would stopped him.
So the boy tried to escape with rijin and when that failed and he'd seen his dad becoming even more scary than usual and this time closing the door behind him, he took action. I am sure segi saved her life and sanity then.

Hmmm... My thoughts for that part is Joon Young had been waiting for the opportunity to escape with little Rijin but the plan failed his expectations and he could not take the mental abuse anymore. I did hear the glass shattering noise during that particular scene but I think that it was his mental state shattered into pieces and he soon call out Segi to help for the first time. :/

Wow, genius writer, I can't believe that the name of those personality is not just given by the owner's body (Cha Do Hyun) but it also symbolize to something.

Teddy beears name as well as Ri Jin's 7 years old preserve self- Nana
Sailing boat name- Perry Park

As well as the main character:

Oh Ri Jin- Origin (begining)
Oh Ri On- Orion (name of the star)

This writer is such a genius for pulling a unexpected twist. No wonder his previous work also great (Moon Embracing The Sun)

And the director, double thumbs up

The actors and actresses are all brilliant. They are not just good in acting but very convincing in delivering their character on screen, especially for Ji Sung who pull his 7 character wisely. Even without a word and just by the eyes expression you can determine who's who.
Well deserve to take a lot of acting award for the 2015 year-end awarding. I think the highest award for 2015 (Daesang) was made especially for Ji Sung. He deserve that. And also, as well as the characters. This story is a gland slam.

What I said is just base on the observation I did in the entire show so far.
I'm also fan of the previous work, i like the story even though I have no idea about the writer's profile.

Well base on some networking site that I already visit, there are lot of prediction that the show will take almost all of the award for the year-end. And everyone is hoping that Ji Sung will take the Daesang award for this year. (Like Lee Bo Young in 2013 for IHYV)

It is funny to imagine that, "What if" it is not Huang Jung Eung (correct me if my spelling is wrong) and Ji Sung win that win the award for best couple and best kiss? Instead its Ji Sung (Ahn Yona) and Park Seo Joon (Oh Ri On) that got the award? Just like Song Jong Ki and Yoo Ah In (Best Couple)

I think, the award might create a new category just for those scene. It's amazing that even the simple act (Ad-lib or out of the script) can bring that such a huge impact to the show and mark the the viewer's delight.

@Hanna: even if I wish that Team Rijin would win the Best Screen Award, it would be a pleasant surprise for me! I'm in Team Yona for a long long time.

So yes, I think they should be awarded for the ad-lib acts. It is not very nice to Writer nim because these acts could have made her to change her story abit so that it would be consistent. But in my humble opinion, it is because the main cast have enough skills to create all the great ad lib scenes and made the scripts a notch higher and let Writer-nim's story shine for k dramas of 2015.

And by the way,

I saw that there is a news regarding the story...

It stated that Ji Sung is the FIRST KOREAN ACTOR THAT WILL PLAY A DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER CHARACTER in the History of Korean Television.

And also he is not the original choice choice for the said story, but what other Korean drama experience. The "not original choice" is the one pulling the show.

And like Kill Me Heal Me, Ji Sung is not the first list, hence the character is not do for his favor but he put his acting like the character is made for him.

A lot will complain for sure if the Daesang is not given to him. The award for this year is made for him. (Base on some sight that I read)

Thank you for the compliment. Yes, indeed the Kill Me Heal Me inspired me to write again. Now that I watch this show, the writers inspired me to continue my passion.

This show is really awesome and I wish just like the other korean Drama, this show will mark not just in Korean Television History but also in history of Television.

By the way, there is an organization that inspired by the show to raise funds for those who are victims of child abuse. As the show itself center the story about abuse (Oh Ri Jin).

The Webtooon Author of Hyde and Jekyll needs to apologize again for saying KMHM was a rip off. The amount of thought that has gone into this story obviously required a writer with a good plan, not a copycat. I'm tempted to go back to episodes 1 and 2 to see what throw away details I missed.

Another emotionally intense episode with tragic inferences of child abuse.

The main cast of adult actors and the child actors are a great frame of reference for why casting matters. KMHM continues to make the case for & prove the point of how important it is to get it right.

Bummer to learn that his real name from childhood was not Shin Se Gi but Cha Joon Young instead.

Of course I have to say Welcome Back — Shin Se-Gi.

Little Cha Jun-young was soooo good in this episode. When he started clutching his head, i was like gasping and ooh-ing at the good acting, the impact on the story/history, in horror at his dead-eyed resolve to 'rescue' Ri-jin.! Even the child actors were doing such an awesome job!

Thank you drama, last week I was a bit angry cause even if the angst was necessary in popular opinion, then what bothered me was not so much the angst but the shift of style and attitude. The self-consciousness was lost and it did things you had grown used to this drama NOT doing.
ep 17 was still a very heartbreaking episode, but what made up for it was little Joon / Se Gi and the explanations we got.

To cheer me up, I was surfing Twitter / Pinterest / Facebook with #TeamSeGi & #TeamYoNa etc., and I saw so many BTS pictures and memes. Have you seen the meme that says "Internet asks if the dress is Blue/black or gold/white. Drama fans ask: Shin Se Gi (shown in blue suit and black tie) or Cha Do Hyun (in gold-white sweater) LOL.

Isn´t it hilarious how each personality has its own fan club? 7 fan clubs for 1 actor in the same drama - plus his wife. But most people are all teams cause they cannot choose. I think I am more #TeamDoHyun & #TeamGetPerryABoat. Yo Na is a little too much. But she has the biggest fan club anyway

Nope, he's the one and only, the original host. His only problem is he carries everyone's pain as his own because of his strong morality and empathetic nature, that's why he mistook Rijin's past abuse as his own and lived under her name as a way to atone for his family's sins. I think more than anything, this drama is meant to show us his journey of healing and reconciliation with things that are out of his control, which is exactly what ep 18 potrayed.

I don't think they've enough time to do it in 19 and 20 either (I feel like Rijin and Dohyun have weathered enough at this point that everything else seems paltry) so I hope they don't decide to make Chaeyeon go full-on mental

Okay, who else agrees that Ji Sung is THE best actor ever!! I can't believe he went from Save the Last Dance for me, to Protect the Boss to this!! I mean this guy has talent, no one can say that he doesn't... No one could have done a better job, I'm glad it was him at the end to accept the role.
And yay for Se-Gi!!! I wasn't ready to say bye yet.. I hope we get a proper goodbye from all the personalities because I'm gonna miss them.

This episode made me cry so many times that even looking at the picture from the recap kinda make me teary! Cha do Hyun suffered a lot. I have to say more than Re Jin. At least when she cried she had a whole family next to her to hold her, calm her down and console her but Do Hyun had no one, when he put his head on the bear, I just couldn't handle it and broke down!

Now we know when and how Se Gi was created, I do agree that fire isn't the best solution to that situation but to a kid that old it is. He didn't know what else to do, of course he wouldn't go thinking about the consequences because he is a 7 year old kid, all he wanted to do is stop the suffering!

I like how they tell us about Perry park, now we know how he came into the picture.

This episode was full of angst but gave us a lot of answers so m pretty happy with it!

I loved the where Perry Park came from! And such a weird feeling to think that his dad was so smiling- so 'carefree' and loving to his son! It shows how big the disparagement was from small-town dad, loving and free to heir of Seungjin group dad, disapproving and violent.

I love this show to bits. I love ep 17 because it was angsty and it was needed, it makes the drama more realistic cos I mean its a drama about a mental disorder right? It can't be all sunshine and rainbows or would break the writer's head. CJP was a pitiful and horrible human being and the grand monster is more horrible and mama monster is the most horrible. This ep emphasizes how DH and RJ handled their hurt, DH alone and RJ with family.
Most people don't like angst in drama, me I love it if properly done and not some unnecessary angst like the one in witch romance, its just that its a given that everyone goes through challenges in life and that we all have our own way of handling such challenges and I think that's what this ep was about.

"Are you ready? I am ready!" is the best bittersweet line I ever heard in a drama.

I don't know how much I should thank the PD for making Joonpyo less monstrous in this episode. I just love Ahn Nae Sang for portraying this character (my favourite Ahjussi actor) because clearly, he nailed this complex character within minutes of his screen time and made me sympthatize with him. What Joon Pyo done to Rijin is no excusable but I can see why he would become a monster.

It is so scary to watch both Joon Pyo and Do Hyun lived exactly the same life. Like father like son, both did become a monster (one abuser one have D.I.D). But what makes it different is the woman they met. If Joon Pyo have met someone like Rijin, he could have been saved.

I don't know whether Writer nim is trying to draw Karma plot in this drama or not: no one involved in horrible accident should not be punished. It is obvious that Grandma is the bystander of the fire incident so the victim of the fire accident is turn out ot be her son just like Joon Young's Mum in the abuse accident. I felt sorry but not sorry for Grandma because if she have not been closing one eye for the abuse accident, none of this would have happen.

As for Joon Young's Mum, no. She continues to disappoint me from taking away her son's identity. While I see her motivations, it is not clear to her to see that her son is struggling with his mental health Cha family did to him. (REALLY!? ?)

What can i say about Chaeyeon, she have been a pretty good 2nd lead. I know she will have her heartbreak later but I know she will be doing fine because she is different from where she was already!

As for Shin Segi, I know he is coming out because I saw the tell tale signs: Joon Young must vomit and never take medicine. LOL. I'm so happy to see Segi is back and I really think Drama gods had listen to my prayer.

Lastly, whoever said that Shin Segi means New Century, I really want to give you a virtual hug. It is a spot on. :D

P.S: I'm glad that Purplecow and Saya patched their friendship!! :D

I know KMHM is widely regarded as having too many flashbacks, but I would like one that shows how Grandfather Cha responded to Joon Pyo's declaration that Ri Jin wasn't his child. I'm assuming that Ri Jin was only locked up in the basement after Grandfather and Min Seo Yeon died, so how on earth did they all live in the same house before that? How did Grandfather justify MSY and RJ's presence in the house? And did he continue refusing to let Joon Pyo put Do Hyun on the family register?

I still think Joon Pyo was the most culpable of all the adults. After all, no one forced him to abuse the two children; he should have understood that MSY and RJ were in the same situation as he was, i.e. pawns in Grandfather's grand plan, and been kind to them. But I agree with everyone who say that he's not a black-and-white villain. In fact I wonder if his vicious behaviour towards MSY and RJ wasn't partly motivated by anger on his son's behalf, since MSY/RJ were sort of the reason why his father wouldn't let him put DH on the family register. How JP became a monster deserves a drama of its own, and he's played with such tragic intensity by the great Ahn Nae Sang.

There was a brief flashback scene where little Ri Jin was already locked in the basement, and little Do Hyun came to visit her. She said something about her mother coming to pick her up in 3 days, but Do Hyun said she wouldn't be coming, 'cos she died, causing Ri Jin to start crying. So I'm guessing that Ri Jin was locked in that basement for a while. :(

I'm glad they humanised Jun Pyo by showing those beautiful father-son moments, and also making him go back to rescue Ri Jin, for his son's sake.

From Jun Pyo's perspective, Seo Yeon passing off her daughter as his (even with the Chairman's permission) must have been an outrage. The fact that his son (the true family bloodline) can't even be registered as family, so long as SY's daughter is there - what parent wouldn't be angry and resentful? I don't condone his violence in any way, but Jun Pyo's really a victim of the rotten Seungjin Group's obsession with power. He was sanest and happiest away from them, and he knew it. It was a pity he ever had to go back.

Thanks for the recap!
Revelations after revelations come tumbling down and its really heart wrenching to see Dohyun suffering all alone. He is strong enough to handle it. But he was stronger before, because he had Rijin by his side who believed in him and surrounded him in love and happiness. But that blanket is not there anymore and he's standing alone when the horrible truth from the past comes knocking.
Which is probably why he let Segi take over there in the end. Acknowledging that Segi is more adept at handling this.
And Rijin! Such a wonderful character. Even in her suffering, her mind is clear and running. The questions she asked her mom are the exact same questions we've had since last episode and it felt gratifying to see her still be herself despite all that she's going through.
I did think Rion was a bit harsh to her but maybe she needed that. but what she needs more than a distraction right now is to sit down and have an honest talk with Dohyun. That would lessen both their suffering exponentially.
Kudos to the child actor who played Dohyun! That scene. that look, that smirk! So spot on and chilling to the bone.
You could literally see the birth of Segi in him.
What I don't understand is scary batshit crazy grandma's explanation and accusations. She claims she saw Dohyun with the canister that day as he was dragging it. So she did what? Stood there mesmerized as she watched her grandson light a fire?! Her recollection of the events indicate that she had the opportunity to stop him but she DIDN'T. That led to her son being in a coma and she thinks she's free of all blame? Or does she recognize her hand in it and so dumps all the guilt onto Dohyun instead of herself?
Either way, I'd like to see Dohyun snatching the Seungjin she's protected all these years from right under her nose. She deserves it.

I've got another reason for wanting more flashbacks. At the time of the garden party / fire, Grandfather and Min Seo Yeon had presumably been dead for quite a while (otherwise throwing a garden party would be really inappropriate). It's easy to accept that Mrs Oh needed that much time to infiltrate the mansion, but what I don't quite get is why MSY asked her to save Ri Jin so long ago. If she had still been a valued member of Seung Jin group then, she and RJ should have been protected by Grandfather, so even if she'd had to leave the country for a while, why didn't she just insist on bringing Ri Jin with her or at least placing her in the care of someone who wasn't mad with anger and jealousy?

Maybe, just maybe, she knew someone wanted to kill her, but she didn't know when, so she called mama Oh in advance (and the car she went into got into accident just a moment later). Or, she received a death threat. She seemed so panicked and if she could bring RJ back to America, she would. But instead, she called mama Oh. She was running out of time, but we don't know exactly why.

Ahhhhh this was a great episode the excessive flashbacks never bothered me it had a purpose and they did help and answered most of the questions i had in mind in episode 17 still i'm very curious about one more thing ""Mr X""??! Does he represent cha do hyun loosing his identity??? Are we going to see him as a real alter like the previous ones or he'll be the integration of all the alters at the end of the drama???! looking for an explanation towards Mr X like they did with Nana! Anyway i trust the writer she did a fantastic job until now she delivered literally edge of the seat suspense moment!! fingers crossed for the final week countdown begins ;)

And I'm very impressed with the child actors they cast the right kids i mean wow they are as brilliant as the main adult cast. Little cha do hyun was so good crying at the basement and the cold look he gave when he turned to shin segi 'hats off' he gave me the creeps!! I love all the cast in KMHM all performances were superb Ji sung is definetely award worthy! I’m constantly blown away by his performance i could never picture anyone else as him in this drama.
I already loved him in Secret but here he's killing it! he's showing some outstanding acting thats no doubt!! along of course with Hwang Jang Eum she never fails to impress me with her acting skills she is fantastic as well these two are beyond epic together ❥ ♥ ❤ ❥ ♥ ❤ ❥

I like how other personalities help in ORJ and CDH reunion :) 1st of all thanks to Se Gi that he went to meet Ri Jin then Perry Park prevented further separation if he wouldn't arrive CDH would go back with a simple sayonara then the mighty a Yo Na ( who is in the charge of doing impossible things ) managed to sleep in the same room... Yayyy!!!! :D though Yo Sub missed the chance of kissing :P

I LOVE RI ON. It's so good to have such a supportive brother like that. He's one of the reasons Ri Jin is able to be so emotionally grounded. And I feel bad for misunderstanding his affection towards his adopted sister as romantic love when it was pure brotherly affection mixed with fear for her because of her past trauma. Maybe the mistake was made because of the way it was acted? I don't know.

I don't hate evil grandma as much as I thought I would. It makes sense that she despises her grandson after she witnessed him set the house on fire, a fire that turned her beloved son into a comatose patient. To Joon Pyo's credit, he did go back to pick up Oh Rin Jin at his son's insistence, but she was already gone. So while he was an abusive bastard, he wasn't a murderer.

Grandma was left to pick up the pieces when everything went south.
But she couldn't have been unaware of the abuse occuring in her very own basement and did nothing to stop it. I just wonder how much power she had in her own house. Grandpa seemed to be an authoritarian and a domineering personality. He no doubt trampled on his son's self esteem which made his son leave home with the intention never to return.

I blame the chairman for the whole fiasco. Not all victims become abusers themselves, but Joon Pyo became one. I suspect that he was probably abused himself, not physically perhaps, but certainly emotionally and even mentally. When someone tells you you're worthless often enough, you start to believe it. And it didn't help him being constantly compared to his competent spouse and falling short each time. The one thing he wanted, was a divorce from his sham of a marriage, and he couldn't have that. Then he wants his son listed in the family register, and he was denied that as well . Meanwhile his wife's illegitimate child which is no blood relation is put in the family register. It's no wonder he grew angry and resentful. It's obvious he started out as a decent man who wanted a simple life, but he became a monster. I'm not excusing his behavior, just trying to understand it. A

And he had the misfortune to father a child by a very greedy and grasping woman. I have less tolerance for Shin Hwa ran whose greed and grasping nature contributed to the mess that fractured her son's psyche.

Yes, Grandma was left to pick up the pieces and clean up the mess and in her mind burying it all was the best solution to protect everyone without causing a scandal. But, what I don't understand is why she didn't try to stop Dohyun when she saw him dragging the canister ? Why did she just stand there watching? Because her recollection of the events suggest that she did have the opportunity to stop him, but she chose not to. For whatever reason.

This is also one of the greatest mysteries I couldn't figure out. LOL. But I guess it is her roles in the 2 accidents: to be a bystander when horrible things happen. Or probably she knows her son was not mentally healthy then so she assumed that her grandson is the same?

Grandma Cha saw Do Hyun with the cannister going towards the basement, but has no idea her son was in the room at the moment. Maybe a little part of her hoped for the girl in the basement to disappear, or maybe she thought that little Do Hyun wants to get rid of the girl as well.

The idea of the little boy with a cannister of oil must be sooo difficult to understand that Grandma Cha had no idea how to react. It was only when she found out that her son was in there that she started regretting doing nothing and putting the blame on Do Hyun all his life.

@starsy: yes I do agree with you about the grandmother's actions (or lack of action). A lot of people are asking why she didn't do anything when she saw Do Hyun with the kerosene/gasoline. But she didn't know what we know: all she knew at the time was that Joon Pyo was supposed to be introducing Do Hyun to the guests, and she couldn't figure out where one had gone, and what the other was doing.

I agree! She saw Do-hyun dragging something (it's a basement, maybe lighting wouldn't have been good?) and only after the fire broke out, did she connect the dots to say 'ah that was gas! it was my grandkid!'

But then again, it also fits in with her behavior of being reaction-ary and not wanting to know something unless it directly impacts her. Like whatever Do-hyun's illness was (in the way early episodes), whatever was happening to Min Seo-yeon's child - if it didn't impact her life/plans, she was like "I don't need to know. I don't care to find out."

Actually... I wonder if Nana was a personality or not. His personality might have been Do Hyun (Ri Jin) who just always drew Nana. Cha Do Hyun/Joon Young just assumed that that meant that the personality's name was Nana. Or was it/she really called Nana?

One fan in the Korean forum DC made an interesting discovery:
the name Seungjin is a brand of bean powder, and the Korean phrase for bean powder (kongkaru/콩가루) is another term for a broken family.
How fitting of a name to describe the exact state of seungjin family

Thank you for the recaps. I watch with English subs and your recaps really help in understanding more of what's going on.

One question: I'm in the Eastern US and I keep checking for your recaps after I've watched the current episode. Last night there was no recap, but this morning it's showing it was posted March 7th (yesterday) and there are tons of comments already. Any idea why I wouldn't have seen the recap last night?

Do Hyun's uncle (Ki Joon's dad) is the son of Grandpa's brother, ie he is Grandpa/Grandma's nephew, not son. Uncle said in one of the early episodes that Grandpa stole the company from his dad, which would explain his attempts to get it back now.

I think Ki Joon's dad is Joon Pyo's cousin. They mentioned in one of the earlier episodes that he thought that his father should have inherited the company instead of Grandpa Cha.

Do Hyun's uncle isn't Grandma's son. I think he's Joon Pyo's cousin, which would make Do hyun and Ki Joon second cousins. I never saw anything that indicated Grandma had any closeness with Ki Joon's father. But I could be wrong. Anyone know where I can get access to a family tree? But I recall Ki Joon's dad saying that his grandfather was a sly fox who stole the company away from his younger brother.

Thanks for the recap! It left me speechless how Abusive Dad's words -BEFORE he was abusive- of "living freely under a different name" reminded me of Ri On's reason to split himself as Ri On and Omega... They said pretty much the same thing even when they had completely different reasons... Unconsciously, it might have triggered baby Joon Young's different personalities since now we see at least where Perry comes from as a "carefree ahjussi" and Im still pretty sure his last personality has to do with this too but as his dad abusive self... Now we can see Abusive Dad just wanted to live freely but all that heir drama made him bitter and unhappy... imo, every generation had their victims since Abusive Grandpa did what he wanted when he wanted cornening Abusive Dad to resent him, taking awful decisions like taking back at Do Hyun for how Grandpa planned to register her... Abusive Grandpa made Abusive Dad a victim and he did the same thing with Do hyun wanting to hurt seo Yeon and in the process made his own child a victim...!

Ri On been back to his usual self made me fist pump and everything! Hes such a boss... Ri Jin has always told patients to get help but she wanted to suffer alone so I was really happy Ri On called her out. He said the right thing and I still hope he can say the same thing to DoHyun...!

aaah, its one more week to go...and I still cant stand to remember that the show will end soon, hope for the next week episodes writer-nim will give us an incredible ending that we are all never forget, as for this week episodes, been watching it over and over, and then I rewatch the show from the start episodes, why do I love you so so much show??

first scene in ep 17...JS and HJE really good in crying scenes TT_TT..i feel sorry and pity for Do Hyun..no one in his side except that he can only hug his teddy bear...while RiJin,she has the Oh Family to support her during her breakdown TT_TT..

but i cry a river bet RION,RIJIN and Rina scene..eventhough its a happy moment..the bgm sang by park SeoJoon w/ its lyrics...it make me cry TT_TT..RiOn is such a good brother TT_TT

No wonder Cha JunYoung split into different personalities..blaming himself why his good father turns to abusive(though its not his fault),stealing once identity (Oh RiJin)..and might became a murderer..

One of my favorite things about this drama is how the writer portrays women. There is a clear distinction drawn between the Seungjin household women, and Ri-jin and her adoptive mother. Both Joon Pyo's mother and Cha Do Hyun's mother seek power through their sons. Their own need for power and validation is the driving force behind all of their actions. Apart from backstage conniving they can have no real agency of their own. But Ri-jin and her mother, indeed both her biological and adoptive mothers, are capable of acting under their own power. This is what saved Ri-jin, both physically from the fire, and emotionally from the abuse. And Ri-jin herself acts out of her own power; For awhile in episodes 15 & 16 we thought that she was being manipulated by Ri-on and CDH, but then we realize that she has always been a step ahead of them, accurately understanding and predicting their actions and countering with her own.

wow, I just wanted to say that whatever happen in this drama, called it flaws or misconception
I really like when they shows us the story rather than just said it black and white, we can have diff interpretation but we see where it comes

and at the end of every ep, I always can recall some sweet memory they shown

and now, they really make statement about family being a ground that nourished the kids life or trap a kid soul

we maybe have a dark start but we can have a happy end.
