Kill Me, Heal Me: Episode 14

This was an episode of things I’ve been wanting to happen for a long, long time. It starts light (and bromantic!) for the Lunar New Year, but we pick up momentum as the show gets ready to enter its last quarter. The puzzle pieces fit together, one after the other, and the mystery of the basement is unlocked once and for all. I think. But that only leaves us with a whole new set of questions, the most pressing of which is: How will we wait until Wednesday?

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Ri-on comes out to look for Do-hyun, and overhears him asking Ri-jin to see him as a man. She cites the contract to Do-hyun, which forbids her from falling in love with him or any of the alters. He counters that he will pay for the breach of contract.

He steps closer and reaches for her hand, when he notices the charred photo of Min Seo-yeon in the trash can. In surprise, he tells Ri-jin that the woman is his mother on the family registry. Why is it here? Ri-on announces himself by saying the photo is his.

Do-hyun’s mom shouts at her investigator for not finding that child yet. He says they’ve found out who took the child away on the night of the fire.

Grandma Seo turns over Do-hyun’s declaration to find out the secrets of his past. Mom finds her in her study, and Grandma orders her to go to the U.S. with Do-hyun and live how she wants.

Mom comments that it would have been nice if Grandma had shown Do-hyun even a little warmth as her grandson; then he wouldn’t have become a person who threatened his parents. She says that Grandma’s indebted to her — it’s thanks to her that Do-hyun’s dad is alive. She points out that no matter how much Grandma dislikes it, Do-hyun is his father’s only bloodline. Getting increasingly worked up, she demands that Grandma bring Do-hyun back immediately.

Do-hyun asks Ri-on why he had the picture. Ri-on tells him he was planning to write a mystery novel based on the Seungjin family, but abandoned it after being caught by Ri-jin. Do-hyun isn’t convinced by the glib explanation and they take off to talk privately. Ri-on warns his sister not to follow, so of course, she does.

Ensconced in a car, Do-hyun asks with quiet anger what Ri-on’s interest is in his family history. Ri-on says he was investigating what happened with Do-hyun’s father, Min Seo-yeon, and Do-hyun’s biological mother. Since he’s already stopped, though, he tells Do-hyun to drop it. Apologizing, he gets out.

Do-hyun chases him to finish their talk, but Dad catches both of them. Seizing each by an ear, he sets them to work because the restaurant is so busy, and sends Ri-jin inside to help Mom.

While they do Dad’s chores, Do-hyun tells Ri-on about his own fear of basements. He knows Ri-jin has the same fear, and asks if “The Child in the Basement” is based on the siblings’ story. Ri-on admits it is, although he doesn’t explain if there’s a connection to Seungjin. Recalling that the reason for the boy’s fear was because he loved the girl, Do-hyun surmises that they must not be biological siblings.

Dad is so exasperated by the boys’ intense gaze-offs every time he comes by that he bangs their heads together, accusing them of acting out their own melo, and they cry in pain.

Undeterred, Do-hyun wants to know if Ri-on found out the reason for Ri-jin’s fear. But at this point, Ri-on can’t deal with any more Do-hyun in his face, when he’s still scarred from Yo-na.

The family and Do-hyun enjoy celebratory drinks together to see in the new year. They even break the fourth wall for a moment and wish us a happy new year, aww.

Dad thanks “Perry” for his hard work, and gives him allowance money. Do-hyun is startled and turns it down, but Dad and Ri-on encourage him to, so he accepts.

Next, it’s selca time, and Dad and Ri-on bicker. Do-hyun watches, part bewildered and part amused by this display of family, so unlike his own. They take lots of pictures, and Do-hyun — who has to be reminded to smile — is in the center of all of them.

The worse for drink now, Dad urges Do-hyun/Perry to enjoy more of his brew, but Do-hyun makes the excuse that he’s not a good drinker. Mom and Ri-on add to the pressure, and all of a sudden, drunk Ri-jin springs up and yells at them (with her eyes closed, lol) to leave him alone: “My man doesn’t want to drink!” She invokes freedom and democracy, and girl you are going to be so mortified in the morning, ha.

Mom and Dad are shocked by her confession, and Ri-on commences a brotherly telling-off. She just leans right over him to Do-hyun and declares that she’ll be his black knight (substitute drinker). But she only gets about halfway through his glass before she passes out and clatters to the floor, squishing Ri-on.

Both boys dive to help her up. Each of them grasp an arm and they tug the limp Ri-jin back and forth, arguing about who gets to tuck her in, until Mom yells that she’ll rip her in half. Dad adds the observation that they’ve been like this all day, filming their own little drama. Haha.

Ri-on wins and piggybacks her to her room, but is quickly made redundant by Do-hyun’s super-fast tucking-in skills. Do-hyun grins like crazy thinking of her calling him her man, and Ri-on just watches him slack-jawed.

Mom’s made up a bed for Do-hyun in Ri-on’s room, and they settle down to sleep. Do-hyun thanks Ri-on for being a good friend, and letting him meet good people. Ri-on contradicts him — he’s not a good friend. But if Do-hyun is okay with a bad friend, he’ll give it a shot. Seriously, aww. My feels. That’s enough for Do-hyun, and he grins in the dark.

Ri-jin falls off her bed and wakes up to the memory of her last words before she passed out. She wails with shame, and Ri-on finds her outside, communing with the family dog. He throws her some hangover relief and says it’s her own fault for trying to keep up with Dad’s drinking.

Do-hyun wakes up to find Ri-on gone. He finds both siblings on the veranda, their backs to him. He listens to Ri-on parse her dream of playing with a little boy and then being approached by a dark shadow.

Ri-on tells her that the boy was him, and as for the shadow, he mimes an advertising dancing balloon. There used to be one at the supermarket when they were kids, and she used to be so scared of it, he reminds her. She accepts his explanation, happy that talking things out with him is so comfortable.

Mom finds Do-hyun watching them, and quietly takes him in for soup. Do-hyun laps up both soup and Mom’s warmth. They chat about how he quit his job in a fit of anger, and Mom asks his opinion of Ri-jin from a man’s point of view. She’s cute, he admits shyly. Mom is thrilled by the assessment, and rattles off more of her virtues.

He’s envious of the twins’ close bond, and Mom says she had a hard time raising the little firebrands because they were always so full of fight and energy. She offers to show Do-hyun their childhood pictures.

Ri-jin wonders why Ri-on has such clear childhood memories, when she has so few, despite their same age. Ri-on reminds her of Mom’s explanation, that during a big house-fire when they were children, only she inhaled the toxic fumes which affected her memories.

It makes her understand Do-hyun more, she tells him. Because her family were filling the empty parts of her memory every day, she was able to heal. But Do-hyun’s family covered up the past and hid it, which left Do-hyun with unhealed wounds.

But she remembers some things, she tells Ri-on: “The day you and I became twin brother and sister.” He looks at her in surprise. We return to the memory of the day little Ri-on pushed her, when he told her to hit him back — he wants a sister with guts, not a wimp.

“You…knew?” present Ri-on asks in shock. She sniffs back tears, then catches the scent of Mom’s soup. Breaking the moment, she follows her nose inside.

Mom and Do-hyun look through her old photo albums and she shows him a birthday photo. She gets a little nervous when Do-hyun remarks that of course being twins, they had the same birthday. Do-hyun’s head rings in reaction to one photo — the one of Ri-jin taken the day she and Ri-on became siblings. In his memory, a child’s voice asks him, “What is your name?”

Mom asks him his Korean name, but luckily, Ri-jin’s arrival and demands for soup interrupt. Ri-jin stops short when she sees Do-hyun, ha, and hides behind Ri-on in mortification. When she peeks around him, Do-hyun grins at her. Hahaha.

The siblings playfully cajole Mom for soup, and follow behind her like baby ducks. While they’re gone, Do-hyun quietly pockets the photo.

Do-hyun tells Chief Ahn on the phone that he’s at Ri-jin’s. The chief is worried (especially when he hears about Yo-na), but Do-hyun reassures him that he’s more than comfortable, and proudly tells him that he even received allowance. But Chief Ahn has news — they’ve found a witness for the fire, a catering employee. Do-hyun tells him to investigate further.

Do-hyun calls Ri-jin out for lurking. He catches her by the hand and takes her to the basement, wedging the door open this time, so they don’t get locked in. She apologizes for her drunken behavior earlier, but he gently interrupts. He asks her if he can’t be the first person she goes to when she’s having a hard time, or wants to talk.

He tells her that he’s also afraid of basements, and has two bad memories of them — one from his childhood, and the other more recent. Her embarrassment about the aborted kiss the last time they were here makes him smile.

He continues, “Whatever it is, I want to overcome everything together with you. I want to erase my bad memories, too, with good memories with you. So…”

“So…” Ri-jin replies, “I’ll do it with you.” Do-hyun closes the distance between them to kiss her. They break to smile at each other, and Ri-jin initiates the second kiss.

But it wakes up another childhood memory for Do-hyun. In the basement of doom, a clock strikes. A hand holds onto little Do-hyun, and adult Do-hyun realizes it’s a girl.

“Don’t go. Play with me,” she says, her face still shadowed. She shows him a locket with a picture of her mom, and adult Do-hyun is astonished to recognize Min Seo-yeon. Little Do-hyun breaks it to her that her mom is dead.

Do-hyun wakes up in the wine cellar of Grandma’s house with a teddy bear in his arms. Confused and disorientated, he’s pulled into a vision of the little girl, who takes the bear and hides in the corner. The bear’s name is Nana, she tells him, and shows him her drawing.

The vision gives way to a memory. Evil Dad discovers Do-hyun’s clandestine visits to the girl, and he advances on her. Little Do-hyun begs Dad to hit him instead. Both children sob, and adult Do-hyun sobs with them.

Ri-jin goes to wake the boys and finds Do-hyun already gone. But Dr. Seok joins their breakfast party, and is surprised that “Perry” was there. The mood is merry, but Ri-on notices how quiet his sister is.

Grandma takes her New Year’s breakfast alone. Do-hyun’s mom drops by with the observation that their usual visitors must be paying their respects somewhere more worthwhile. She tells Grandma again that bringing Do-hyun back in is her only option if she wants to keep the company safe.

Ki-joon’s family including Chae-yeon visit, ostensibly to pay their respects to Grandma, but Mom calls them out on their real intent. Ki-joon’s mom wants to flaunt her bride, while his dad is checking that Do-hyun really is properly cut off. She excuses herself to get them wine, and throws a gibe at Ki-joon’s mom. She doesn’t want to waste good wine on a dirty face, yo.

She’s dismayed to find Do-hyun slumped in the cellar. Coming up to her, he asks if the child she’s searching for is Min Seo-yeon’s daughter. Near tears, Do-hyun asks, “Was the abused child not me, but that child?” Rattled by his insistent questioning, Mom yells at him for being absurd, but he roars back that Mom saw everything and used the knowledge to her advantage. Why did she lie?

“My father the assailant and my mother the bystander turned me into an assailant and bystander. I can no longer be a victim,” he cries. He promises to find the child first, and atone by any means necessary, even if he has to sell Seungjin whole. “I will no longer trust your words,” he vows. “I will only believe the truth I find myself, and the memories I remember.”

He leaves her there, and she falls to her knees.

True to Mom’s words, Ki-joon’s dad is feeling out where Do-hyun stands with Grandma. She confirms that he’s returning to the U.S., and says it was a mistake to have brought him in now.

Do-hyun enters abruptly, and without preamble asks Grandma if she was aware of the goings-on in this house 21 years ago. The family watches intently as Grandma, fearful, tries to shut him up. Ignoring it, he tells her he will find out everything that happened and her role in it, and then he’ll reveal it all.

On the drive home, Ki-joon’s parents speculate on Grandma’s unspeakable secret. Mom wonders if it’s to do with the fire or Min Seo-yeon’s child, and Dad chuckles that either way, it’ll be interesting.

Do-hyun’s mom numbly replays Do-hyun’s threat to sell Seungjin to compensate that child. She decides that she can’t allow him to undo everything she’s suffered for. She calls her investigator and he tells her that they’ve found the child, and to check her phone for the photo.

She opens the file and her jaw drops, because of course, it’s Ri-jin. She now sees her presence beside Do-hyun and her inquiries into his childhood in a menacing light. She’s stricken that Ri-jin’s gotten her teeth into her son already, and calls her man back with the order to capture and bring her to her using all necessary force.

Ri-jin tells Dr. Seok about the strange flashback she experienced in the cellar of the Seungjin house, and describes feeling like she used to draw on a basement wall. But she wonders if she’s mixing up Do-hyun’s memories with hers. Dr. Seok asks if the shock was what caused her to faint, and Ri-jin explains her fear of basements.

She also tells him that her childhood memories were always incomplete, but this is the first time something like this has appeared. Dr. Seok thinks there must be a reason why it’s surfacing now. The distress of those memories is a symptom of something unresolved, he tells her — perhaps the time is right to examine past wounds.

She comes out to see Dr. Seok off, and he recommends that she and Do-hyun visit his office together for a session. He makes his getaway before her mom can give him any more food.

Another car pulls up and several men get out. One of them calls Ri-jin by name and tells her someone wants to see her. She asks who it is, but his silence sets off alarm bells. When she tries to back away, they seize her.

Ri-on comes out to walk the dog and sees them stuff her into their car. Frantic, he leaps into his car and peels after them. They notice the tail and dammit Ri-on, is this the time to stop at traffic lights?!

Do-hyun stares off with his reflection, and his bathroom looks different in daylight. Ri-on phones and tells him that Ri-jin was kidnapped — does Do-hyun know anything? He has no idea, but he’s as frantic with worry as Ri-on. Luckily, Chief Ahn previously installed a tracker on her phone, and Do-hyun follows the signal.

Meanwhile, the kidnappers report their successful capture and confirm that they weren’t followed. Ri-jin lies unconscious in what looks like another basement.

Do-hyun’s car barrels right through their perimeter guard and men leap out of the way. The kidnappers try to block him, three on one, but he fights back. He takes a few hits, and before long, he’s clutching his head at the telltale ringing that signals a shift.

His assailants stand back and a new fight starts. Se-gi’s tattoo creeps up his neck, and in his head, Se-gi tells him to move aside — he can’t handle it. Do-hyun resists, and roars that he will do it, it’s his fight. The tattoo fades away, but a thug clocks him a blow to the head that brings him to his knees.

It seems to have broken something — the wall of memory between him and Se-gi. And now, Se-gi’s memories pour into Do-hyun’s mind, mixing with his own. Se-gi tells Ri-jin she called him a long time ago. The little girl asks him to stay and play with her.

Transported into the playroom of memory, he hears Ri-jin’s question to Se-gi: Is she in the missing memories that Do-hyun can’t remember? For the first time, he sees the little girl’s face unshadowed, and recognition hits him: The girl is Ri-jin.

The scenario plays out again — the clock strikes, and she asks him not to go. She’s afraid of basements, but if he’s there, she feels better. Adult Ri-jin echoing her younger self mixes into the memories. Little Do-hyun promises to come back, every night at 10 o’clock. Se-gi says similar words about falling for Ri-jin at 10 pm. Evil Dad approaches the children. He plucks away little Do-hyun, who’s shielding Ri-jin, and the memory fades to black as Do-hyun returns, screaming, to the present.

But the memory-spill from Se-gi continues with more recent encounters: Se-gi kissing Ri-jin. The confrontation with Grandma and his conversation at Dad’s bedside. “I became a monster because of you,” he’d told Dad. Se-gi telling him that he took on the pain Do-hyun couldn’t.

And at the end of it all, Ri-jin pleading to Do-hyun, “Don’t go.”

COMMENTS

At last. I’ve been waiting for everything that happened this episode, but two things especially: for Do-hyun to find out the girl in the basement was Ri-jin, and for the wall between him and Se-gi to be smashed.

I almost don’t want to talk about any of it, because I feel like it hit that delicate line of anguish and payoff just right. If I talk about it, the magic might vanish.

So let’s start light and talk bromance and all together now: awwwww! Ri-on’s been a decent chap (and an excellent brother) all along, and I love that he likes and respects Do-hyun despite himself. Contrary to some interpretations, I don’t think he sees Do-hyun as a romantic rival, nor does he have romantic intentions towards Ri-jin. I think he’s mainly struggling with the feeling of displacement, which is why he’s jealous of Do-hyun. He’s used to — and cherishes — being the “first person” in Ri-jin’s life. That’s why Do-hyun’s request to her in their basement-date is meaningful, and worded that way. But it’s practically a rite of passage for close siblings or friends to have to make room for that other person, and it’s normal to experience a sense of loss of grief while it happens. But you adjust to the new reality — or in Ri-on’s case, make friends with the enemy (in the heartwarmingest way possible) and lend him your most favorite clothes.

Let me rewind to last week’s foreshadowing for a second, to when Do-hyun said, “You will soon be me,” and purposely conflated it with, “I will soon be you.” It was a striking first, as he took full ownership of Se-gi as part of himself, not an impostor. But the signs of their essential sameness have been steadily increasing for a while. His confrontation with his mother in the cellar, where he swears to atone and give Seungjin to that child, is practically verbatim what Se-gi said to Grandma previously. So that’s the backdrop to their battle at the end of this episode. This time, when Se-gi tries to take control, we witness the exchange. Is Se-gi’s respect new? There’s a sense that they’re finally meeting as equals, and that Se-gi’s motivation for taking over really is to protect Do-hyun.

I have no doubt that Se-gi would make short work of the kidnap situation — he’s efficient at that kind of thing — but the battle of wills was a significant test. Do-hyun can only prove to him that he can fight their bigger battles if he can fight Se-gi away first. When Se-gi cedes, it’s at once permission to remain, and acknowledgement of his ability to handle it — in other words, Do-hyun passes the test. And so, judging him finally ready to take on the pain of the past, Se-gi surrenders his memories to him.

That’s why I’m afraid this is the end of Se-gi as we knew him. I know absorbing his alters is necessary to Do-hyun’s healing, but I can’t deny that Se-gi’s existence brought something special to the show. His edge of wildness took him to really interesting (and hilarious) places as a character, especially since he could do things Do-hyun couldn’t, unrestrained by manners, obligation or social convention. But while I will miss his madness, it’s also a compelling turn for Do-hyun’s character. Equipped with the missing memories and knowledge of Ri-jin’s true identity, the stakes have changed. He won’t just be a little more daring or a little less self-effacing — knowing the truth is the final push he needs, not only to embrace his inner Se-gi, but to lead a major offensive against all the perpetrators as we enter the show’s last act.

His announcement in front of the whole Seungjin family was great. Because his interest at this point is not in gaining leverage at the company, he may have (inadvertently) created an ally in his uncle. There’s more than one way to fight Grandma, and though they may not yet know it, Do-hyun and his uncle are suddenly united by their common goal to reveal her unspeakable secrets. Although their ends are different, it doesn’t really matter as long as the truth comes out.

Loved the moment Ri-on reluctantly agrees to be Do-hyun's friend, because bromance.
And lol at the moment they break the fourth wall to greet the viewers then they just continue acting.

I love love the part that the broke the fourth wall and wished all of us a happy lunar new year.
It was so sweet and natural at the same time.
It made me feel that we are a part of their family too, and they acknowledge our presence :)

This must be the 3rd time I think I'm so taken by Ji Sung's charms. The first time was in "Protect the Boss" it was a slow process, he doesn't look like Gong Yoo or Lee Min Ho but there's just something about him.
Then in 2013, kdrama was scarce, I looked for korean romcom movies and My PS partner was on the list, by looking at the stills, I know the girl, Kim Ah Jung but I forgot Ji Sung already, then again I was really attracted to the guy, I thought he looked familiar, oh, geez so it was him.
and now, he just perfected his charms, when he smiles, it's like the world just got brighter.

so true Aria, some says that the scene make them bring down the mood just like the crowds on Yo Na running like crazy scene, but I dont feel the same way, even how bad people talks about the show, I dont care at all, I love it love it love it so...LOL

when I first saw that moment I jumped up and yelled "I LOVE YOU TOO!!!" cause really, this show is so open to the audeince and so self-conscious, and does everything we want. and much more than we expect.

I don't think so, I believe the mother listed on the register had an affair(that produced ORJ) and left the house(or attempted to).
CDH real mom made a statement about being the one to keep CDH's dad alive even when that women left and he wanted to die.
Also, its prob the reason ORJ was kept in the basement and abused right? Kdramas thing with adults hating children that remind them of someone's infidelity, or of an enemy, or if that child poses a "threat" to inheritance etc.

If Ri Ji is not blood related to CDH's dad, then how she could be a threat to inheritance??? Why Shin Se Gi told to give her Sungjin group as if it was her birth right to own that ???

I don't personally think that RiJin is an actual threat-she is (to the main house) part of a scandalous past that must remain buried. Also, if the Chairwoman had decided to let Do Hyun stay- his uncle and others could have tried (or will try) to use RiJin as a pawn in their play for power- though they aren't actually sure how she is relative to Seungjin Group. I don't think it matters to them either, anyone they can use sway power to their side of the company/family they will try to use.

I think Shin Se Gi ,and now Cha Do Hyun in this episode, want to atone to RiJin because she was abused and locked up because of his family, because people may have tried to use her to gain power. The pain they have suffered is because of the company and giving it to her or destroying it may seem right.

Also, think if they let the press know of the secret daughter of seungjin group (I'm making up headlines now lol).
Kdrama history has shown that stock prices would drop, board members would be upset and look to change the head of the group.
Who best to swoop in and take over than someone like the uncle who is still related but not actually apart of any "scandal" and who has a lot of people behind him. Then the president, his son/DoHyun's cousin, would be next in line and so on and so forth.

Wasn't ORJ's biological mom a favorite of the old Chairman? He even asked ORJ's mom to go back to the Korea even though she already left Joon Pyo (most likely because of his violent behavior)... anyways, ORJ's mom probably has a bit more power within the Seungjin group that Chairwoman likes and enough of it that her Son's position within the company can be questioned.

OR

ORJ's mom is actually the appointed heir by the Chairman. But since Chairman and ORJ's mom are already dead... ORJ has a fighting chance to have the chair position... or something..

We also have to remember that CDH has said multiple times that he will give the company to "that child"... Hence people seeing ORJ as a threat to their greed.

Why, of course she is a threat to them even if she is not a part of Cha bloodline. Min Seo Yeon was rich and I assume had considerable amount of shares in the conglomerate. Ri Jin will inherit those. Also, she was abused which makes the comatose dad, the vile mistress and the grandmonster criminals. If Ri Jin comes back and finds a way to prove it, it makes them all eligible for some jail time so anyone in their position should be afraid. And I pray to God that we get a scene of the grandmonster and the mistress in handcuffs doing a walk of shame down their beloved office hallway. Sick, awful people, they deserve to be humiliated and be in jail?? The son is comatose so unless he wakes up, he can't be punished now, can he?? And no way, our OTP can't be blood related. They are confusing us but will clear it soon enough I guess and hope so.

I have a gut feeling that ORJ's father is the grandfather. The way they set up the backstory implied that the grandfather and the father's wife were really close, too close. It would also explain why the grandmother and father would condone ORJ's abuse.

That means, of course, that if CDH's father is the grandmother's son, then ORJ would be CDH's aunt, which makes me think that CDH does not share the family's bloodline and his mother passed off someone else's kid. That would explain why the grandmother has no respect or consideration for him, even though she dotes on her son.

This show is killing me!

I doubt that the grandfather is Ri Jin's father, that would be way too complicated, the remaining episodes are not enough to reveal a new birth secret for Di Hyun, resolve the family conflict, have all the personalities merge with Do-Hyun and have a satisfying for the baddies. I mean we didn't even see Mr X yet. I really think he was protecting his daughter-in-law from his awful son, and his oeudipus-complexed wife.

I haven't wanted to say anything, but that's been my gut feeling, too! The grandfather's humongous portrait suggests that he's part of a humongous secret. I figured that Grandma engineered the car accident. Also, the drama starts by showing us Grandpa and Min Seo-yeon together (in the car)-- if their togetherness wasn't significant, then why not just have one or both of them die in the fire? And it just feels like Ri-jin is the heir by birthright (Ri-on probably is too). Hopefully CDH has his own birth secret and isn't RJ's nephew. Or, I could be totally wrong and just jumping to conclusions after having watched too many birth-secret dramas.

Little RJ said something like "My mom said she's coming for me after I sleep three times", which seemed like another clue-- perhaps a family split was in process, which led to a not-so-accidental car accident.

I don't think they were divorced, just separated. Remember when the uncle said that Do Hyun's grandfather was close to her? Maybe he persuaded her to come back, and she'd already had Ri Jin by then...Do Hyun's father being what he was, he probably wouldn't have accepted Ri Jin as his own child, especially if he loved her mother like Do Hyun's mom said. Maybe So-Yeon lived with the grandfather as protection against Do Hyun's dad, but dad kept her daughter as leverage so she wouldn't leave him. And then, the accident happened and the house burnt down...

CDH's grandfather bought Ri-jin's mother and her child back from America to make her the CEO and they had a car accident and both died so Ri-jin ended with CDH' family after her mother died. At least that's how I understood.

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about the grandfather. Which means there were internal struggles between the Chairwoman and her husband. He was the original Chairperson right? If someone could prove it was his will/intent to have RiJin as the rightful heir despite blood ties then the current Chairwoman or anyone she chooses as a successor would be outed.
Which is why RiJin was hidden even after her mom died right? If she doesn't exist she isn't a threat. And...this is why RiOn doesn't want the mom to know DoHyun's family/occupation. It would bring back the memories of her friend and the strife..sigh. Kdramaland why??

My guess is that we are in for a classic wild kdrama melo ride.

First, in one episode it will be revealed that Ji-Rin is actually the daughter of an affair between the grandfather/chairman and Min Seo Yeon. This will generate huge angst since the OTP would now seem to be blood-related (aunt and nephew pairing). Ji-Rin is now fabulously wealthy since she is a direct heir of the grandfather.

Second, but in the next episode it will be revealed that Do Hyun's biological mother lied about who fathered him, so Do Hyun in fact is not blood related to Ji-Rin. Thus, the OTP can continue incest-free, and it would also be in the best interest of the corporation because the wealth can be routed to Ji-Rin by marriage to Do Hyun without having to reveal all of the scandals or to correct the register.

They aren't blood related, anyway. Do Hyun's dad married Ri Jin's mom, but Ri Jin's mom had her with another guy. Ri Jin's mom is listed in the family registry as Do Hyun's mom because she married his dad, but his mom is his dad's mistress. So they have different parents.

but wait in early ep 14 DH's mother say to grandma that he is CJP only bloodline, so they have confirmed that DH is CJP's only child. furthermore, what is it about grandma and grandpa internal problem? I think CJP is not grandpa child, but minseo is. Thats why RJ (and RO*) IS/ARE the heir/s,,,

*I'm still sure that RO-RJ are true twin siblings, to much similarity and telepathy (when RJ have bad dream ep 13, RO was startled in his sleep, asking to himself if RJ have a bad dream)...

i was thinking along the same lines but the idea has a glaring flaw.. viz a DNA test, which a rich chaebol family would have definitely insisted on if some woman claiming to be pregnant with the heir's son turned up... or maybe kdrama isn't quite that logical?

A part of me wishes that it is Ri-on that was Min Seo-yeon's child not Ri-jin. It just seems so..coincidental! Ri-on is such a surprising character and the novel he is writing will take on an interesting turn. I would've loved to see how Ri-jin would've handled the situation as well!

There aren't any throw away lines in this show.
The separated at birth convo was on purpose and it was 20 mins into Ep 1. Odds are ORO and ORJ are those twins.

So MY afrain of the crazy rich people tossed her son off the sinking ship over to the lifeboat of RJ's eventual parents to keep him away from the lineage while MY raised the daughter for a while by herself in the States.

She gets called back to SK, moves into the horror mansion with the torture basement with her daughter, but dies in the car crash with her protector.

After her death evil sick bastard Dad abuses the daughter because he is bat sh^t crazy. Poor baby CDH has to witness this treatment so it makes him splinter under the shame of it. The fire brings the abused daughter's existence to light so they decide the safest thing is to reunite her wiht her real brother and the parents agree.

Mistress Mom holds them hostage with the info about what they did because if she spills it, the press would have a hay day.

I don't think it should be taken as a literal interpretation with twins. It might be referring to Do-hyun and Ri-jin where in a situation where there are two equally eligible heirs, one of them has to be removed - just like the way Ri-jin was a threat and was removed from the picture.
Also come on - two people bound together by fate separated during childhood - like twins - Do-Hyun and Ri-Jin.
But ok, might be reading too much into this :) But I do agree that it probably wasn't a meaningless offhand comment - the scriptwriters here are too good for that.

Yes, DH and SG are merging. It's shown in the fact that SG finally let DH know some of the memories when DH told him that he can handle his battle and thus,SG finally acknowleged him.
I believe that Mr. X is the "inner helper" personality and thus, he will make his appearance on the latter episodes before the end for he will be responsible for the "merging" of DH's personalities.

Although I'm afraid that we might not see Se Gi anymore, I want Do Hyun to be finally healed and it hurts because it's a contrast and only one between the two will happen and it's strongly the latter part.

How I love the inner conversation betwen Se Gi and Do Hyun... Rooting for a stronger Do Hyun... but at the same time, I hope he will embrace the carefree ways of Se Gi... and perhaps, the cheesiness as well? ^^

I worry for Ri Jin T-T Her being the actual one who was abused comes as a surprise for me. How is she going to take it when she knows her true identity, how her real mother died, and how she was abused by her biological father? With the love from her family and Do Hyun, I hope Ri Jin will overcome this crisis. Can't wait for the next episode.

I was so surprised by the sudden fourth wall break, but I loved the show's little wink to us, hehe. and also the reluctant/horrified Ri-on/Do-hyun bromance, complete with sharing clothes and stomping off in a huff because he (as Yo-na) gave Ri-on unspeakable girl cooties, hehe.

and can I just say how much I love the final struggle between Do-hyun and Se-gi? I fully understand that for Do-hyun to really come into his own, we have to let go of Se-gi as a separate personality, but the question of who's going to get to deal with this situation/who has the strength to do it now is a terrific cliffhanger.

Another thing I noted in one of my first comments on a KMHM recap is how unusual and lovely it is to have a hero who is a thoroughly decent person who behaves like one too.

While that essential goodness led a lot of people (including his own personalities! Look at how Se-gi and Yo-na talk about him) to dismiss Do-hyun as a weakling, it's actually the backbone that lets him stand up to the dirty deeds of the people he calls family, and I feel like that is a thing we're starting to see now, as the wall between his various selves starts to dissolve.

And we see that not only in the final struggle, but in other aspects of his personality that we're seeing more of now - his playfulness around Ri-jin and the way he teases her, for instance. Or the increasing confidence he has to face down his mother and grandmother. Those are not qualities that ep 1 Do-hyun demonstrated in quite the same measure - good job with character development there!

and big props to Ri-jin too. I know a lot of people disliked her shrieking, but I view that as an unnecessary directorial instruction since Hwang Jung-eum is an actress who's proven herself adept at both comedy and drama when given even the slightest of decent material to work with, and she brings it here. I love that Ri-jin is a three-dimensional person who lives a full life even apart from Do-hyun - her family goes a long way towards establishing that, and despite the odd screech, she's refreshingly normal for a kdrama romcom heroine. Yeah, she drinks too much and mortifies herself (been there, done that) but she also isn't afraid to declare that Do-hyun is her man. (or to kiss him back in the basement - not to mention the first time she told him to finish what he started, lol)

Love your thoughts. DH is good and decent and , just like in real life, dismissed as weak. But he's not really. DH always is the one to stop SG from committing grievous crimes. When SG was about to kill Dr scottfield (seok ho phil?) DH came out. When he was about to kill his father, DH stopped him.

So he's weak but probably the strongest of them all.

And I so loved RJs "My Man, doon'th woorrry." dialog.

I'm glad you pointed out the fact that hero is actually a decent human being for a change. I hadn't noticed but I appreciated it anyway. Although he doesn't have much choice with a firebrand, bomber, and saesang as his other personalities.

As for how they will get out of that cliffhanger (2 days still!!), I am hoping since the wall broke between him and Se Gi that possibly he may be able to ask for help from the others. Perry seems most like MacGyver to me so he could probably figure out something - hopefully not to explosive.

By the way - glad to see you found your body. Hope you can hang onto it over the next few weeks. ;)

I really like how Ri-Jin subtly let's her family know that she knows she adopted. Sort of a "I'm strong enough to remember, I'm grateful, I love you and we're still family'' kind of feel.
I loved Ri-On's and Do Hyun's interactions- the series has a good balance of serious and hilarious. Ear tugging, head slapping dads are a win in a heavy situation.

Se-gi's last stand..sad(only because I wanted to see the character once more) but it needs to happen for CDH to become whole and to me Shin Segi is the dominant personality and if they merge- its only a matter of time for the others.
Though am I the only one who though YoSub(the suicidal one) had come out when CDH was in the winecellar? But when he started talking I was a bit surprised and glad because it means he is becoming stronger and able to handle distressing situations better.

Even though Segi would be missed, but I think a part of Do Hyun will always protect Rijin. In extreme case, we may see Segi again. Remember the last few episode about Segi's heartfelt confession? He don't mind to be a shadow of Do Hyun as long as he gets to stay with rijin. (IMO, isn't it the same confession to Segi after DH kissed Rijin ?)

Awwww! That bromance! so cute! I loved how the father kept interrupting their intense converstion with murers of melodrama.

And that ending was awesome! so perfect! And it also took me by surprise.

My only worry is, was it too soon?

I thought that DH will merge with his other personalities first and leave SG for last, since SG is the strongest.

I will miss SG a lot. While I love seeing DH with SG's style and courage, I liked SGs childishness as well.

We won't be getting rap battles and dramatic chair action anymore :(

I felt so giddy this episode that I could only watch it 2 and a half minutes at a time. I had to pause and just squeal silently, then continue. otherwise, stuff would have happened. I loved the moments where the absurd mismatched details got explained.

That last scene left me shaking...literally. That was so powerful. I watched it twice but couldn't go a third time because it was so emotionally jarring. Wow.....can't even find the best word to describe it.

I got all choked up reading Saya's lovely tribute:
His edge of wildness took him to really interesting (and hilarious) places as a character, especially since he could do things Do-hyun couldn’t, unrestrained by manners, obligation or social convention...But while I will miss his madness.

This reinforces my feelings towards him as Peter Pan. SG is the man-boy who will never grow up, but remain forever the innocent pure strength that held DH together all those years.

While am also heartbroken to see him disappear into CDH, I am excited to see a CDH who WILL wear guyliner and ROCK IT on his wild nights out with RJ and RO.

Seriously, the whole SG concept is one I wil always treasure and am so happy we go to see someone like JiSung bring him to life. Imma go cry now.

Aw. Me too. You put my thoughts into words. Its going to take a while to get used to a Segi-less world *sniff* , but I'm going to find comfort in the fact that Dohyun+Segi= dynamic combo! Can't wait for wednesday to be here already.

isnt it weird though, cause I mean, it is still Ji Sung. he is still the same. but we are having withdrawal symptoms from one of the characters. we shouldnt have to but...

I think I would like for the mirror-conversations between Se Gi and Do Hyun to remain somehow, like a chat with one of his inner selves to assure each other they are doing ok. maybe that would ease the withdrawal.

I wonder what Ji Sung is going to feel after the drama. which alter is he going to miss the most?

The part that struck me the most aside from the merging of SG and DH is the part where DH found out that "The Child at the Basement" was RJ all along.

I was crying with him especially during the part where he remembered that little Do-hyun promises to come back, every night at ten. The promised time, that SG never forgot and still what he told RJ during their first encounter. I confess that I found that line so cheesy during the first Episode but I never thought that it was a significant part in the story. Bravo writer-nim!

Segi and Rijin confessed he fell in love with her at 10pm.

Yay! Managed to read Saya's recap in lighting speed.

I totally agree with Saya. I will miss Segi's existence a lot because he is the wildest but the most vulnerable personality. I can feel his pain for wanting to live because he sort of know his existence will be ceased very soon.

I always wondered why Segi / Do Hyun's sub conscious always listen to Rijin's order. And now I know why. His guilt is his motivation to stay with Rijin because he could not do that the last time. I thought some cheesy mechanisms at first. :')

And what can I say about theories. PPL WHO ACTUALLY COMMENTED ABOUT THE WHIPPING THEORY ARE SUPER AWESOME. I didn't see it coming until someone mention it. Good job!! I learnt a lot in this theory. I always thought both Rijin and Do Hyun were abused but I GUESS THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A GOOD TWIST. I can't say it is awesome because abuse is not even something to be happy about.

I love Rion even more in this episode. that scene- Rion and Do Hyun were jealous of each other's placement. Even though it executed in a comedic way, but it clearly shows how much they wanted to switch places.

Cha Grandma is clearly hiding something. She could be the car and fire accident mastermind. OMG. I hope Joon Pyo is not grandpa's son and Min Seo is. (Pray hard that this part of my theory is correct) then no matter what, my ship will never sink.

Things that made me wonder in this epsiode:
1. Now Do Hyun remember his past, this means that he know Rijin is Min Seo's daughter. On paper, they are actually half siblings. What we know is Min Seo's daughter is not Joon Pyo. So who could it be? I really hate to recognize too twisted family ties (Min Seo and Grandpa is having affair). Plus I don't think OTP should settle their "on the paper" relationship like that. They could never get married and it sounds damn wrong in Korean's culture. I wonder does Writer nim have the time to correct this for our OTP? (DRAMA GOD PLS LISTEN TO THIS PRAYER)

2. Rion says he is a bad friend for Do Hyun. It could also means that he can be his love rival but does it also equals to he could be the true heir too?

3. Doctor chipmunk is too close to Oh Family. (anyone realise that?). I wonder if he is the physican for Rijin when she is younger? Plus it is obvious that he does favoured Rijin, making her his disciple.

4. Rijin said that Oh mum treats both Rijin and Rion equally. It made an impression for me. Could it be both Rijin and Rion were adopted and Oh parents actually know it and so switching theory could actually happen? ?

5. Joon Pyo saved Do Hyun instead of Rijin. What is the true reason? I mean last episode we know that Joon Pyo really loved Min Seo. So, how could he not save Rijin too? Judging Segi's reaction, it is implied that Jp decided to save only DH. Or all this while DH is MS's son and RJ is his daughter. So he don't want to hurt Min Seo's child and hit his own instead?

yes, I think that is it, and I wish they became like brothers. cause despite having grown up together with Ri Jin, Ri On, as a writer, as someone secretly in love, as a person who spends most his time with made-up characters, there is this strange lonelyness in him. and Do Hyun, I am sure he will be a little lonely after merging with all his alters. so it would be good to have even a bad friend.

Regarding no. 5, Ri Jin wasn't his kid, and clearly, as the flashbacks show, he only used her as blackmail to get his son to behave, so he obviously didn't think of her as a person, probably more so because the woman he loved had her with someone else. She had no value for him especially after her mom died. So maybe when he saved Do Hyun, he didn't even think about her. She didn't register as someone to be saved.
My theory is, she somehow made it out on her own (maybe by following Joon Pyo the way he went out) and the Ohs, who were there for the party for whatever reason, found her and took her away. No one knew about her and those who did were probably glad she wasn't around any more.

Have you ever read Wuthering Heights? Heathcliff was obsessed with and "loved" catherine, but HATED her daughter (because catherine died in childbirth) However, he kept her close and forced her to marry his weak son and had her live as a virtual prisoner. It was really twisted. I think it is a similar type thing in this story.

Regarding #1, Do Hyun is indeed Cha Jun Pyo's son (as the information that we have so far) both on paper and biologically. Ri Jin-wise, while MSY is on the family register, there's no inkling so far that Ri Jin is on the register at all. The reason why they had to hide her is maybe because she doesn't exist as per the official family register. Ri Jin is probably registered under the Oh family, so if you're worried of the "on the paper relationship", don't be :)

They're hunting her down now because she is the only one who can threaten Seungjin group as Grandpa Cha handed the company over to MSY. So naturally her next-in-line i.e. Ri Jin (if she is indeed MSY's daughter) would inherit Seungjin.

Probably that's why Do Hyun's mum went nuts when she found out that Ri Jin is MSY's daughter. There's a chance for the company to fall into her hands instead of Do Hyun. But seriously, why does she want the company to belong to Do
