Kill Me, Heal Me: Episode 15

Welcome to the episode in which no one is happy. Like, literally no one. In the midst of all this misery, Ri-on finally lays his cards on the table and Do-hyun struggles with the question of how best to protect the people he loves. But are there any good choices when your own family wants to destroy everything you hold dear?

EPISODE 15 RECAP

With blood smearing one cheek and tears coursing down the other, Do-hyun finally remembers that Ri-jin was with him in the basement. He struggles to stay conscious while his memories—not to mention Mom’s thugs—assault him, finally recalling the promise he made Ri-jin as a child: “Remember. 10:00pm—the time we promised to meet.” Overwhelmed, he sinks to his knees and then collapses on the ground.

Ri-jin is trapped inside the building, tormented by her own memories. Outside, Do-hyun forces himself to his feet once again, pushing himself past the limits of his battered body. He stumbles towards the thugs, but his attempts to fight are easily repulsed. The bad guys proceed to beat the shit out of him. Again.

Mom hears from her thugs about the guy who followed them, unaware that it’s her precious son. She tells them to retreat for now, to avoid getting caught by the police. The leader relays the orders to his henchmen, who are busy repeatedly kicking a prone Do-hyun in the ribs. Ouch.

Ri-jin struggles with the locked door, which triggers recollections of being trapped in the basement. She starts to hyperventilate and rummages through the shelves for a plastic bag, showing great presence of mind in the midst of her panic attack.

The door opens, and Ri-jin’s mind jumps immediately to when Do-hyun’s father would enter the basement. She runs to a pile of boxes and huddles behind them, burying her head in her arms. In voiceover we hear Do-hyun as a child, apologizing for being late.

Ri-jin turns around to look, and sure enough it’s Cha Do-hyun who enters the kitchen, looking like he’s been through a war zone. Ri-jin rushes over to him, asking about his injuries. “I’m sorry… I’m late,” Do-hyun says, echoing the words he spoke as a child. He collapses once more (is that three times in eight minutes? Poor guy).

Ri-on and Chief Ahn arrive at the hideout at the same time. Chief Ahn grabs Ri-on by the collar, demanding to know who he really is, but their confrontation is interrupted by Ri-jin’s distressed cries. They hurry inside, where Ri-jin tells them to call an ambulance.

Ri-jin stays by Do-hyun’s side as paramedics rush him to the emergency room, even giving orders to the other doctor. He’s all like, “Wait… aren’t you supposed to be at Johns Hopkins?”, but Ri-jin is in no mood for chitchat.

Ri-on finds his sister waiting in the hall for news of Do-hyun’s condition. He hands her a restorative drink and tries to get her to rest at home, but Ri-jin won’t budge until Do-hyun regains his senses. Ri-on gets upset because Ri-jin only worries about Do-hyun, ignoring his concern for her. He chucks his drink in the trash and storms off.

In the hallway, Chief Ahn learns that the villa where Ri-jin was taken is registered under “that person’s” name, and orders his informant to find the leader of the kidnappers. Ri-on overhears the call and demands to know who owns the villa, but Chief Ahn says that he can’t share information that isn’t confirmed.

“Then I’ll confirm it for myself,” Ri-on replies. “But if it’s who I think it is, I don’t know what I’ll end up doing.” He leaves Chief Ahn with that warning and calls his friend on the police force to ask him to investigate.

Ri-jin is waiting by Do-hyun’s hospital bed when Dr. Seok comes looking for her. He reminds her of her promise to have a consultation with him, and takes Ri-jin away while Do-hyun sleeps. But Do-hyun wakes seconds after they leave the room.

Ri-jin relates her feeling of déjà vu while trapped in the villa. She’s now certain that she plays a part in Do-hyun’s repressed memories, and she’s determined to regain her own forgotten past to help him heal.

Dr. Seok confirms that Ri-jin is really doing this for Do-hyun’s sake and not her own, and the camera pans to show us Do-hyun listening outside the office door. He hears Ri-jin say how they promised to fight together from now on, whether it was a fear of basements or anything else.

Do-hyun goes to the roof of the hospital and looks out over the city, the picture of Ri-jin as a child clasped in his hand. Ri-jin sees him and assumes it’s Yo-sub trying to kill himself again, so she pulls him away from the edge and scolds him for breaking the promise he made her.

“If you want to die, then die,” Ri-jin says. “But die tomorrow.” And if tomorrow he still wants to die, she says, then push it to the next day, and the next and the next. A day will come when he’ll be glad he held on. Do-hyun promises her he won’t die, because there’s something he has to do first—someone he has to protect.

Ri-jin hugs Do-hyun tightly, sobbing that this is the first time she realized how reassuring the words “I won’t die” actually are. With the picture of child Ri-jin still in his hand, Do-hyun can’t bring himself to return Ri-jin’s embrace.

Walking through the hospital lobby, Do-hyun asks Ri-jin to stop trying to recover her memories. She is living well and has many people who love her—Do-hyun doesn’t want her to suffer just to help him.

Ri-jin reminds him that it’s likely she was Se-gi’s first love, which means she could be Do-hyun’s as well. There could be wonderful memories that Ri-jin would recover along with the bad ones, and Do-hyun shouldn’t give up just because he’s scared.

But Do-hyun knows exactly how not-wonderful Ri-jin’s memories would be, and he can’t hold back his tears. He pulls Ri-jin into a hug, leaving her confused about what she said exactly that affected him so much.

Ri-jin’s mother visits a Buddhist temple, the final resting place of her old friend Min Seo-yeon (Ri-jin’s biological mother). A flashback shows Seo-yeon calling Mom twenty-one years ago, begging her to save her daughter. She promised to pick Ri-jin up in a few days, but must have died in the car crash before she could. In the present, Mom scolds Seo-yeon gently for passing on without keeping her promise. She tears up as she says how well Ri-jin has grown up.

Just outside the temple entrance is a thug in a suit, who calls Ki-joon’s dad to confirm that he’s discovered the identity of the person who raised Seo-yeon’s child. Dad reminds him to move carefully, and Ki-joon observes that something big must be happening if Dad is mobilizing his troops. Dad says he’s simply aiming for his opponent’s weakness, which he must take advantage of before his own is exposed.

Ki-joon’s mother takes Chae-yeon out to lunch to scold her (politely, of course) for being seen drunk in public with Cha Do-hyun. She doesn’t make a big deal out of it, saying that she trusts Chae-yeon not to make another mistake like this. “How can you trust me when I don’t trust myself?” Chae-yeon asks. She stands up, pays her respects, and excuses herself like a boss.

Chae-yeon’s mother gets a call from Ki-joon’s mother, who is not happy about what just went down. But Chae-yeon’s mom fires back, saying her daughter is every bit as great as Ki-joon and they should just break off the engagement.

Chae-yeon returns her engagement ring to Ki-joon. She says there is someone else she wants to have, and it’s wrong to play with Ki-joon’s heart like this. He demands to know why she’s started worrying about him now, and Chae-yeon only apologizes and takes her leave. Ki-joon chucks the ring away, cursing Do-hyun.

Ri-on brings some things to Ri-jin at the hospital, but she’s already on her way to Do-hyun’s house. Then Ri-on gets a call from his detective friend, who has discovered the owner of the villa where Ri-jin’s kidnappers went.

Do-hyun hears from Chief Ahn, who has also confirmed without a doubt that it was Do-hyun’s mom who orchestrated the kidnapping. He wants to confront her immediately, but on his way to check out of the hospital he gets a call from Ri-on.

They meet in the hallway, and Ri-on grabs Do-hyun by collar and slams him against the wall. Ri-on is near the limits of his self-control, screaming that Do-hyun should never have created more ties with Ri-jin. Do-hyun remembers what Ri-on told Se-gi, about having no right to be with Ri-jin because he’s a son of Seungjin Group. Tears spring to Do-hyun’s eyes. “Why did you ignore my warning?” Ri-on cries. “Why? Why? WHY?

Ri-jin stops by Do-hyun’s apartment to pick up some of his clothes. She finds the box of toys that Se-gi bought for their date, including the pop-up clown and the evil dancing monkey. She smiles as she recalls how Se-gi tried so hard to impress her.

The toy train sparks a different set of memories—Ri-jin hears a child’s voice promising to meet her every day at the same time. Ri-jin stares at the empty room and sees a child playing with a toy train, though it’s not yet clear to her that it’s an actual memory.

A call comes from Dad who wants Ri-jin to stop by the restaurant to check on Mom. She overworked on the weekend, but she doesn’t want to go to the hospital, so Dad asks Ri-jin to swing by and give her an IV. Ri-jin leaves at once.

Ri-on meets with Do-hyun and explains everything about his past with Ri-jin. He always tried to allay her fears and explain away her nightmares, but now Ri-jin is seeing flashes of her past more frequently after meeting Do-hyun.

Ri-jin will be in danger from people who fear her existence, and her memories will make her miserable if she discovers them. For those reasons, Ri-on asks Do-hyun to send Ri-jin away. She won’t listen to her brother anymore, but she might listen to Do-hyun.

With his head bowed, Ri-on begs Do-hyun to help. Do-hyun agrees, but asks for a single favor in return.

Ri-jin hooks up an IV for her mother and scolds her for not taking care of herself. Ri-jin boasts that she doesn’t make house calls for just anyone, so Mom had better listen. Mom jokes back, wondering where Ri-jin inherited her looks and poise, but the oblique reference to Ri-jin’s real parents turns the mood somber.

“Aren’t you curious about your real family?” Ri-jin’s mom asks. But Ri-jin says that she is content to find out later. Ri-on overhears from the doorway, and in voiceover he asks Do-hyun not to take away Ri-jin or his family’s happiness.

Speaking of taking away happiness, Do-hyun’s mom arrives at his apartment. She asks Chief Ahn why Do-hyun called her out, and the chief replies that it’s probably for the exact reason she fears.

Mom apologizes to Do-hyun, saying that she went too far. She insists that she wasn’t really kidnapping Ri-jin, just investigating to figure out why she approached Do-hyun.

Do-hyun reveals that Ri-jin has no memories of her past, so Mom’s attempts to find out how much she knows are useless. Mom is instantly relieved, which disgusts Do-hyun even further. “Are you even human?!” he demands. He asks if she has the right to call herself someone’s mother after acting this way.

Grandma Seo sits next to Joon-pyo’s bed and scolds him for running away for six years, then staying in a coma for the next twenty. She thinks back to twenty-one years ago, when Joon-pyo finally returned to the house with Do-hyun in tow.

In the past, Grandma Seo greets Joon-pyo just like a mother happy to be reunited with her son (and not the Mistress of Evil we know her to be), but she is put off when Joon-pyo requests that his son be added to the family register. Then Seo-yeon appears, with a daughter that Joon-pyo doesn’t recognize. The adults are tense and wary, but the children share shy smiles.

Back in the present, Grandma Seo reflects that if only her husband hadn’t brought Seo-yeon back to the house, if only “that child” had really been Joon-pyo’s, this whole tragedy would never have happened. Now she doesn’t know where to begin to start straightening things out (unplugging Joon-pyo’s respirator might be a good place to start, honestly).

Do-hyun gives his mother one last chance to atone for her greed: She can pack everything and leave for America with him. Mom isn’t even willing to consider giving up now, when they’re so close to the finish line.

Do-hyun explains that he can never be Seungjin Group’s successor, because he has D.I.D. He tries to get his mother to understand how her greed, her sins and her husband’s, made him this way. Mom’s only thought is that he can’t let anyone know, or else he’ll lose his chance to own Seungjin Group.

“I’ve finally figured out how to end your insatiable greed,” Do-hyun says. He’s going to reveal his illness to Seungjin Group, to the whole world, thereby ending all possibility of Mom gaining prestige through her son. Do-hyun asks Mom once again if she’s willing to leave for America with him.

Ri-on drives Ri-jin to Do-hyun’s apartment. He suggests that Mom’s sickness is because of her shock that Ri-jin knows she was adopted, and asks why Ri-jin is suddenly so determined to recover her memories.

Ri-jin says that she thinks it is the right time, and she is strong enough to look back on her past without crumbling. Ri-on wants to know if her new determination is because of Do-hyun, and Ri-jin says it’s possible, but she won’t say for sure.

They see Do-hyun waiting in front of his apartment, sitting in a folding chair and looking morose. Ri-jin wonders what he’s doing here when he should still be in the hospital.

Ri-jin asks Do-hyun if he was waiting for her, laughing that her dog Ri-na does the same thing. She holds out her hand like she would for her dog, and pets Do-hyun’s head. He plays along, but he looks like he’s on the edge of tears.

We see a flashback of Do-hyun’s conversation with Ri-on, when he promised to send Ri-jin away. His condition was that he spend one final day with her—Do-hyun wants to make Ri-jin smile brightly just once, since he’s always been the one relying on her.

Do-hyun asks Ri-jin if she will go with him on the Snowflake Train, since he wants to make up for cancelling their trip before. Ri-jin immediately agrees and starts dancing for joy, seemingly unaware of Do-hyun’s inner turmoil.

Once more we cut back to Do-hyun and Ri-on’s conversation, with both men crying buckets. “Far in the future,” Do-hyun tells Ri-on, “when Ri-jin doesn’t feel anything even if she thinks of me, and if she happens to be hurt by her past, tell her this: It’s not because you did something wrong, or because you don’t have the right to be loved, that you were abused.”

Ri-jin does have the right to be loved, Do-hyun insists. So she should forget about the past that’s never done her any good, and live her life while being loved. In the present, Ri-jin beams happily at Do-hyun, and he smiles sadly back.

COMMENTS

I feel like I’m watching a completely different drama than the one that has been exceeding all my expectations for the past two months, and I want to trade it back. Much of what I love about Kill Me, Heal Me is its ability to find humor even—or especially—during moments that are supposed to be serious. This episode was nothing like that—it was just pure, unabated misery. For everyone. And while this unrelenting misery certainly makes sense given recent events, it doesn’t always make for a pleasant viewing experience.

Do-hyun’s alters used to allow the show to mine comedy from any situation, without losing sight of the emotional trauma our hero suffers. Now we have all the suffering you could shake a stick at, and instead of Yo-na or Perry Park to lighten the mood, we get flashbacks on flashbacks.

Intellectually, I think I understand why the opening scene featured over six minutes of flashbacks, interspersed with Do-hyun fighting a losing battle against Mom’s thugs. That moment was the culmination of Do-hyun’s nightmares—twenty-one years of confusion were cleared up in an instant, and the truth was every bit as awful as he feared.

In that sense, the flashbacks added to the weight—or maybe density–of the moment, going through Do-hyun’s mind and crystallizing in a single, horrible eureka moment. The problem is that for us, watching repetition after repetition, those memories streeeetch out until it’s hard for us to fully inhabit Do-hyun’s emotions, to feel as he feels.

On a positive note, I’d like to applaud both Chae-yeon and her mom, who carried themselves with some serious class this episode. Chae-yeon finally acted on her feelings, mustering the courage to admit to Ki-joon that he doesn’t own her heart, and that it would be wrong to string him along. Chae-yeon’s mother’s scene was possibly my favorite of the episode—she is a minor character, but it was still a lovely moment to have her stand up to Ki-joon’s mom when she was badmouthing Chae-yeon. Chae-yeon’s happiness comes first for Mom, even before the wealth and prestige of Seungjin Group. I think Do-hyun’s mother and grandmother ought to be taking notes.

The biggest reason why I’ve come to dislike the frequent flashbacks so much is that they take away time that could be devoted to more scenes like this one—scenes that flesh out characters who are rarely in the spotlight. Chae-yeon in particular could have benefited from a few more scenes over the last four or so episodes, which would in turn improve the show overall.

I am—to put it bluntly—seriously pissed off at Do-hyun. The way he acted this episode made me question his intelligence, his judgment, and even his love for Ri-jin. Essentially, I think he’s taking the Noble Idiocy train to Asshole City, and the reasons he gives for pushing Ri-jin away don’t hold water.

Here are Do-hyun’s two objectives: 1) To keep Ri-jin from remembering a past that would make her unhappy; and 2) To keep Ri-jin safe from all of the factions fighting for control of Seungjin Group. Sending Ri-jin away does not make her safer, not in any rational universe. Whether Ri-jin recovers her memory or not, she will always be a threat to Ki-joon and his father, Grandma Seo, and Do-hyun’s mom. All of them are threatened by her existence, and Do-hyun has already seen how they deal with threats. The kidnapping attempt alone should have been enough to convince Do-hyun that his mother is not in her right mind, and attempting to give her an ultimatum is like backing a rabid dog into a corner: Someone’s going to get bitten.

All Do-hyun accomplishes by sending Ri-jin away is to make her more vulnerable to her enemies, without warning her that she will be a target. If he really wants Ri-jin to be safe, he should be offering to run away to America with her, not his bat-shit crazy mother.

As for wanting Ri-jin to be happy, in Do-hyun’s mind that apparently means keeping the truth from her. That, pardon my French, is bullshit. If Ri-jin is strong enough to be Do-hyun’s supporter, physician, and ally, then she’s strong enough to decide for herself if she wants to learn about her past. Of course her memories won’t be pleasant, and it’s insulting to Ri-jin to suggest that she thinks they will be. Children don’t repress years of memories or develop a crippling fear of basements because they had good experiences. As a psychiatrist, Ri-jin has definitely dealt with patients who were victims of abuse, and now that Ri-jin knows her own memories have been suppressed, the possibility that she was abused is going to be top on her list of explanations—anything else would be absurd.

Given that Ri-jin frequently states her desire to find the truth in spite of her fear, the Do-hyun that I thought had developed over the last fourteen episodes would honor his promise to support Ri-jin the way she’s always supported him. What he’s doing instead seems like cowardice to me; and worse, it seems like he’s treating Ri-jin as a fragile doll who can’t be trusted to make her own decisions. I can only hope that when Do-hyun tries to send her away, Ri-jin will tell him to get his head out of his arse and work with her—only then will Do-hyun be able to do something constructive for a change.

This episode was awesome and the next one, even better. I sometimes feel like I'm watching a completely different show than what is recapped because my feelings after watching this show often vary so greatly from the recapper's. But that's the beauty of Dramabeans, a place to celebrate our different opinions and mutual love for kdramas!

me too, i miss the humor in the episode..but as the story unfold or for the plot movement...this can't be avoidable..i guess..the plot is heavy,it perfectly fit more on melodrama/romance in DID cases w/o comedy but thank god the writer makes it enjoyable to watch..

i just hope the last ep is a happy ending w/ comedy..

Two incredibly beautiful and well-acted moments caught me in this one: Do Hyun's horror as Ri Jin chatters about a happy shared childhood, and Do Hyun and Ri On's conversation.

Si Jung is amazing. His expression while Ri Jin is talking about uncovering memories somehow managed to be anguished, incredulous and strained in a way that made it believable that Ri Jin might actually not notice. The way he hid behind his hand, the whole thing, completely heartbreaking.

And then the two guys talking was beautifully well-balanced. The fact that they both carefully didn't mention the root of the problem right up until Do Hyun's instructing Ri On to tell a future Ri Jin that it wasn't her fault that she was abused - Do Hyun speaking it aloud and Ri On's worst fears being confirmed, and then they both choke up. For a scene where Ri Jin wasn't even in, it was just such a lovely way to show how much they both love her, and not in the typical "she's mine, back off" way that competing men sometimes are shown. This was so clearly something Ri On didn't want to be true, and something Do Hyun so clearly doesn't want to discuss, and they found their way around exchanging just enough information to get a whole picture.

This is also one of the first times that noble idiocy has made a damn bit of sense in a k-drama for me. I can actually understand Ri On and Do Hyun conspiring to stop Ri Jin from suddenly accessing those memories again. It's one thing if she intentionally pursues those memories, but that's never been her goal, it's all been coincidental. Do Hyun knows the facts of her abuse, and Ri On's witnessed and tended to the aftermath, so it's understandable they both want to shield her unless she's actively looking.

There might have been a few misfires early on in this drama, but it is going on all cylinders for me now. Amazing.

True... I re-watched the scene where Do Hyun listens to Ri Jin speaking about how finding out memories might be good... so moving.

Ji Sung is another master at eliciting our emotions by the subtle changes in his face and body language. Kudos to him!!!

THIS. I agree that this is one of the few, if not only, situations in which I'm okay with noble idiocy.
For the adults of Seunggin Group, Ri Jin's memories are what's a threat. That's why Crazy Mom relaxed so visibily to hear that she had no recollection of what was done to her. Do Hyun and Ri On are trying to ensure her safety by keeping her in the dark. Yes, I do have issues with them taking over her autonomy, but I appreciate the place of deep, protective from which the actions come.

The question is, how far S. Group will go to eliminate a potential threat. I have my suspicions about the car accident of ORJ's mom and we still don't know how the fire started then in the basement. I thought that's what ri jin was recalling at the beginning of the episode. ..trying to get out seeing the flames. . But what do I know...

Yes, AND we have to keep in mind that ChaDoHyun felt and still feels guilty for the abuses suffered by RiJin in the basement.
Nobody could sweep this kind of deeply grounded feelings Under the carper just because they are in love.
After all his DID stem mainly from it.

Me too!! I was never a fan of Ji Sung's but this drama especially the hospital wowed me. There are so many levels of emotions that he is displaying and breaks my heart just to watch it. I hope he will get a Daesang at the end of year and not give to some actor because of popularity. *rolling my eyes*

@Miranda
I agree. The scene were Do Hyun and Ri On are crying was just so sad and I cried. They both would like to alter the past and protect their loved ones but are incapable of doing so. Ri On for the first time was truly scared for his and his family's happiness. He was insecure and sad, it came from a good place. And I didn't mind the overuse of flashbacks. The flashbacks keep changing slowly. Do Hyun at first thought he was the one being abused but slowly realized it wasn't so. From a narrative point of view, changing the flashbacks to me at least made sense. About the loss of humor, I don't personally see how the truth being revealed and humor can go hand in hand in this episode. The truth we knew from the very beginning was going to be sad and painful, even dark. I wasn't surprised at the lack of humor, the truth often is ugly and this episode was testament of that. We want it to be all rosy but it rarely is. Do Hyun has DID. A person with such serious mental condition often have sad history of abuse associated and the show did deliver on that ground. It made sense to me.
And the noble idiocy for me made sense because I have watched episode 16. SPOILER ALERT:
Do Hyun is scared of telling her the truth so he chose not to because he took responsibility for everything that happened to them like he always does. It wasn't out of character for him. Ri Jin knew he was going to do that and told him, she doesn't want it and to walk away if he can because she won't walk away from him. It wasn't noble idiocy. Do Hyun still isn't ready to face and completely accept the fact that he too was a victim and none of it was his fault. He chose to walk away because of his own sense of overwhelming guilt not because Ri Jin would be better off without him. At least that is what I felt. For once, the guy in Korean dramaland is more vulnerable than the girl. It almost refreshing.

Awwwwwww I know the latest episodes have really been miserable but I still found it to be heart wrenching and a 'pleasant' viewing experience, if you know what I mean haha

I'm also thinking the flashbacks are too frequent but I think I can forgive that, seeing as though this is one of the very few dramas in recent years to get me so emotionally invested.

Also, I find the noble idiocy understandable because, who would want someone they love to remember such a horrifying experience? She DID say she was willing to remember, but the same memory is what made Do Hyun's mind shatter in the first place.

But despite all that, I still don't understand why he couldn't hug her back on the rooftop :(

I'm also ok with the noble idiocy for this particular instance, although, I don't know... maybe it would also have been nice if they had given her a chance to choose ..."If you did not know something which would be painful and are not seeking to find out about it, do you still want to know it?" She could say, maybe later or yes, she's willing to know about it and take the consequences.

Not giving her the chance to know that she even has a choice, ie taking away the choice is the part I'm not too happy with, although I can understand why.

Oh... and as to the hug... I was wondering if it was just a holding back out of guilt. He really wanted to hold her, but felt he did not deserve it kind of thing, because it was his father who hit her instead of hitting him. Some convoluted reasoning or other, I guess. :)

I think he didn't want RJ to get too attached to him, since he is planning on leaving her, so he didn't want to send her any more wrong messages by hugging her back. He gave in when she was talking about her past, because he didn't want to her to see him cry or think he his crying is something negative.

@growingbeautifully and me - I believe your both right, that it was a combination of the two. It took me second to wonder why he didn't hug her back, but then with the way he is feeling he could hardly ask her help carry his burden.

I'm not a fan of the way this drama is headed in the direction of noble idiocy, BUT at the same time I recognise that there are multiple markers planted where Ri-jin has been offered the full story and said she's not curious, while at the same time saying she wants to find her childhood memories even if it is for Do-hyun's sake.

still, even if it is out of love that Ri-on and Do-hyun are planning the breakup, I am NOT a fan of that move at all!

UGHHH that scene where Do-hyun was trying to hide his tears and pulled Ri-jin into a hug..... :( Also, the conversation Do-hyun and Ri-on had at the hospital broke my heart. :(

Ngl though, the flashbacks are really getting to me now. When you use something over and over again, inevitably it's going to start losing its meaning and that's exactly what's happening here. The same flashbacks have been used way too many times for me to feel the emotional impact it's supposed to have anymore.

And yeah, I expected them to take the Noble Idiocy route, but that doesn't mean I'm happy to see it. T_T Hopefully it doesn't last long. There is really no reason that justifies pushing Ri-jin away - I mean, everyone was already searching for the child even BEFORE Do-hyun met Ri-jin, so how does cutting her off keep her any safer?!? And okay, so Ri-on and Do-hyun think that she'd be happier not knowing her past, fair enough. Do-hyun's always been a bit of a noble idiot either way, so I can understand how it'd kiiind of fit his character, but seriously, when the girl's not only stated that she wants to know, but is already in the process of remembering, removing yourself from the situation really DOESN'T HELP.

I'm actually more unhappy about the next episode, but I'll rant about that in the next recap LOL. :P

Has Ri Jin actually ever stated she wants to know for her own benefit, though? That's why I think the guys aren't being protectionist jerks about this - because their separate cues make them think she doesn't necessarily want this.

Ri On has only just found out after two decades that Ri Jin knows she's not his biological twin. That means she's known all of his stories were his way of protecting her, and that she has deliberately not pried into her past. When he overhears her talking to their mom, Ri Jin specifically says she'll find out later. I think it's reasonable to Ri On to take the position that he'll protect Ri Jin until she explicitly states she wants to know.

And then there's Do Hyun, who hears repeatedly that Ri Jin is going to recover her memories FOR HIM. He's already been warned that Ri Jin gives too much of herself to her patients, and now he's hearing that she'll delve into memories he knows to be incredibly painful on his behalf. Again, what he's hearing is that she really has no interest in recovering her memories for herself, but that she wants to help him.

So that's why I think the Ri On/Do Hyun collaboration makes sense. Do Hyun's clearly the accelerant here, without him Ri Jin wouldn't be giving her past a second thought. If Do Hyun's removed and Ri Jin STILL wants to find out what happened in her past, then at least it's clear it's for her own benefit that she's doing it.

It's a hard call to make. You know a happy, cheerful, loved person and you realize that you can tell them a truth that will result in pain for them. They haven't asked for that to be revealed, and have a past history of deliberately not uncovering truths - at what point is telling that truth helping, and when is it unwanted meddling?

(I do realize that there's the entire issue of Do Hyun's family here, but Ri On's shown that he's aware of that side of things and will likely be better at shielding Ri Jin given he's got no connection to them.)

Did I miss something ... when was it that Ri Jin's mum knew that Ri Jin knew she is adopted. Was it not something that was hidden even from the twins?

Required fields are marked *

Yes, however it came about, the parents never referred to Ri Jin as adopted - and given they kept calling her Ri On's "twin", I'm guessing they intended to convince the kids they were actual twins from the start.

It looks like the entire family thought Ri Jin genuinely had lost all of her childhood memories and had no idea she was adopted, it's only in recent episodes that she's been dropping small hints that she not only knows, but has always known and just went along with the plan. Happily, it seems. Mom found that out in ep 14, I think?

@Miranda, thanks for explaining everything so well. Heaven knows I hate it when characters refuse to communicate for no good reason, but I agree with you that Ri Jin's initial reason for recovering her memories is not the right reason. You could even say she was the noble idiot first, except I guess she just wants to help Do Hyun and has no idea how terrible her memories will turn out to be.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm with you, Miranda. Both Do Hyun and Ri On care so much for her well-being that they want to protect her from the pain of remembered abuse. I would think Do Hyun especially, given the awesome depiction of how physically and emotionally painful those memories can be, through the beating he just endured.

At first, I too, was peeved at how LONG and brutal that beating was. Until I realized it was the perfect metaphor for how excruciating memories of abuse can be. A beating dictated by Witness-turned-Perpetrator Mom, no less.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought the purpose behind all those flashbacks was to show exactly how different each one actually was. And how, bit by bit, the "puzzle" came together - from believing he had been alone in the basement, to realizing he had company, that his companion was a girl, and that a blurry adult, who later became his father, had punished Do Hyun by inflicting his abuse on a defenseless little girl, Ri Jin.

His first doctor had said that memory is a mysterious thing. I'd say PD nim has done a good job of showing how recovering lost memories is like peeling layers off an onion. When you think you're done, you're not.

For me, who LOVES the hilarity of this drama, the importance of the topic - child abuse - merits the gravity of this episode.

"I’m actually more unhappy about the next episode, but I’ll rant about that in the next recap LOL."

Well said, @es! :D My thoughts exactly.

But from a dramatic narrative viewpoint, I'm really excited about the sheer scale and audacity of the secret that was revealed then - it went off with a bigger bang than any of Ferry Park's bombs!

Required fields are marked *

one problem with the flashbacks is that the children used in them are just serviceable actors - they are cute but not much else, so it's hard to really connect them to the adult Do-hyun and Ri-jin the way I have in the past with other child actors.

So while I get the need for a gradual info reveal, the flashbacks only stand out to me as something getting in the way of my seeing more of Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum.

Required fields are marked *

I'll have to disagree with you here, I thought the children did a mighty fine job and had no problems connecting with their characters. They set the right kind of tone - no overacting or underacting in this case. As for the flashbacks, they would have been tiresome in any other drama, but not in this one because they ARE so relevant to the show for many reasons:

1. They serve to remind us of the internal conflicts occuring with the characters. Remember that DID is a mental disease, without the use of the flashbacks, it would be hard to relate to just how the characters came to be in the position they are in, or where they are coming from. It's vital to the narration as it helps us get into the heads of the characters.

2. The flashbacks don't feel like filler, they seem to have a personality of their own. I'd liken it to the third character in the room whenever Do Hyun/Se Gi relates with others and refers to the past.

3. The flashbacks gives us clues to the past and keeps us guessing, trying to figure out how things stand. Which is a huge part of the fun of this drama for me. It keeps my brain working overtime. You can also call them narrative markers in this tale.

4. It helps to keep the suspense in this story alive (a good example of this happens with the next episode ), you might say it's a lazy way to tell a story relying so heavily on the use of it, but it's very effective.

Honestly, I can understand the frustration one would feel by watching Do Hyun's and Ri On's action. Although they are trying to protect Ri Jin, but Ri Jin has stated that she wanted to recover her memories. In episode 14, she even told Ri On that she was lucky to have them as her family because they filled her empty memories with happiness, and that she felt sorry for Do Hyun because his family tried to hide his pain by glamorizing his life...and she said that doesn't help heal the wound! These two boys, instead of trying to protect her, should actually listen to her because she obviously, knows what she want, and although the experience is tramatizing and she might fear it at the beginning, Ri Jin is strong enough to withstand it, especially when her memories isn't as bleak as Do Hyun think...she had him to protect her in the past and that is the good memory she was talking about that exist in the midst of bad memories.

I can't wait for this noble idocracy to end (especially disappointed with Ri Oh especially since Ri Jin told him that hiding things doesn't help the healing and he goes and requested something like this). The same goes for Do Hyun because he promised to weather all pain and changed it to good memories with Ri Jin...that gave her courage to face her past because she has his hand to hold onto. He has to quickly keep his promise and be the "man" she can rely on instead of just saying he would.

Out of all the noble idiocy or flashback
What I get us truly how miserable hurt soul is
Even it painful, you can't just look away from that, and that is exactly this show told me
Sad things will come but still you can't just skipp it becase there's no way you gonna understand the sadness is

All this time, do hyun always the one who receive
Since the 1st ep it ia actually how do hyun is, he is not someone that can bear a burden like segi said, he is that weak noble idiocy
We have high hopes because he changes on facing his past
But he still have all that guilt and afraid if he meet new problem

Rijin give him hopes, help when no one stretch a hand, couple of times he admits he can't give anything to her
But when seeing how happy that girl life is become
As an audience I understand the only thing do hyun can have is her life
that she has now, he can bear to take that happiness with no guarantee on happiness as the outcame

Ri on on the other hand can t bear to see how his family and his sister loose that happy life
It is something that shine when when ri on beg and cry and to star trusting do hyun amd do hyun ask for her happiness

If remember the time line, just about 3 month agp everything is happy for oh family, now all the sad tears flow, not to mention if their parents knew. Rion as big brother is like that

The flashback is haunted me becauae it too much and later just shocking how many times our memories can be blinded just because wee see it many times and accept that as raw truth
When memoty is just what we prefer to remember especially a bad one

It is the melodrama time, and what can I said, I enjoy it cause I can lool it away
This drama bring me how sad feeling is that big when you remember how happy you are before
It is painful but it is what need to happen and that's a call to wake you up that sad story can just cover with some happiness
Let's finish and face it to move on
I freaking love this drama

Thanks purplecow for your recap and your take on the mood of this episode. It's true that while other episodes had light moments interspersed with the tense ones, this one was rather grey and dark, as if now that Chunseok is over, we enter more sombre times.

I was reflecting over the course of a few episodes on the make and break of persons because of the greed of their parents. It seems a repeated (in triplicate) pattern that has ruined lives. Joon Pyo selfishly runs off for 6 years only to return with young Do Hyun to get him on the family register, which probably starts the process of child abuse. His mother, Chairwoman Seo can only think about Joon Pyo and keeps the company for him, practically casting aside her own grandson in the interim. The fact that child abuse occurred is probably known to her but she does nothing.

Do Hyun's birth mother, Shin Hwa Ran continues the greed in endless lies, so as to use Do Hyun to keep her place in Seungjin Group. All through this, another child is abused and hidden and ignored by these adults, while Do Hyun knows the horror and bears the guilt.

That they allow their own flesh and blood to be nothing but an object through which they gain prestige and wealth, without once considering his emotional or mental state and without compunction or guilt, is horrifying. Under these circumstances it is understandable that Do Hyun fractures.

And then in stark contrast we have Oh Dae Oh and his wife who have no children of their own, but yet are able to take in, and love a broken child. Out of generosity they rebuild the life of Ri Jin, give her a good brother and enough love so that she becomes whole. She cannot remember her past, but she does not need to find out about it to be at peace in her present. She is happy and secure in whom she is, because of good parents.

And what you (purplecow) say about taking a leaf from the book of Chae Yeon and her mum is so true. How can money and prestige be more important than the happiness or the good of one's child. This is another show turning on defective parenthood at it's worst (or is it at it's best?) LOL!

Although I feel overall down with this episode plus so much pathos for Do Hyun, I also have a hope that with more and more revelations, there will be renewal and reformation in the lives of all these unhappy 'people'. Already the Do Hyun's other personas have been silent and Do Hyun is managing greater self-integration. A positive sign for happier last few episodes, I hope!

I wasn't prepared for this show to get so intense, so heavy. This ep is so sad it depresses me. I love the show, for it is well written and all. But, "depressing" is not a feeling I enjoy where watching drama.

I want to slap DH's mother. That woman isn't even listening to her son, much less trying to understand his needs. All she is about is greed for the corporation, n she is using her son to get it. There is no hint of love or concern or consideration. Poor DH! No wonder he loves RJ so much, since she is the one who shows real concern for him.

The worst grandmother ever is just Tiresome to watch. She played the exact same char in Royal Family, also w Ji Sung. What is the fun in an acting career if all u do is One role?

I also don't get the idea that it's for RJ's good to keep the past from her. Rational adults would want to face the past and surmount it. But both RO n DH think she needs protecting like some porcelain doll.

I love this much much much more when Ji Sung was being a teenage girl! Why can't she be the dominant personality to stay for good? (I ask in jest).

Hi my dear :) I am being buried under RL but dig myself out to draw breath with 4 kdramas at odd times. This is one of them. I'll email you what I'm watching now or you can check more in the group posts.

As I mentioned above, despite this episode of sadness (and now as you mention, Yo Na's non-appearance), I still have hopes for an Integrated Mr X and a resolution of or improvement from so many deleterious relationships. It will be too sad if Do Hyun ends up alone with just his trusty Secretary Ahn. Besides returning to friendship with Chae Yeon, DH could really do with more bromance with Omega and an uplifting family like the Oh's to keep him mentally and emotionally well.

it's the first time i'm posting for this show.. but i just finished epi 15 subbed n i really need to put down my thoughts..

what an episode.. i was literally crying from beginning to end, that i forgot it was actually kmhm that i'm watching! never has there been an episode that was filled with such sadness until this.. but then again, if the show didn't already made me care about the characters this much, i probably wouldn't shed as much tears..

granted i was mentally prepared for the separation of the OTP, i mean, what's a k-drama if there's no contrived reason to separate the OTP for an episode or so?! that's how u justify them overcoming all odds and love winning through.. lol..

but then again, it didn't stop me from being invested in the story, and even feeling their pain (this i meant DH and RO's).. i actually understood why it had to happen (besides it being a well-used drama trope)..

you ask why they have to decide that she shouldn't remember? you already have the answer since the beginning - it was so painful that she had to forget.. it's not that they are making a decision for her.. DH is the one who decided to leave her.. not because he do not want her to remember, this comes after that, it's when he realised that the one who kidnapped RJ is his mom, he realise that being with him is what made her in danger.. like what he said to ORO, when she finally remembers, pls tell her that it's not her fault and she deserves to be loved..

i feel like everyone likes to jump on the "noble idiot" ship too easily and never ever gave much consideration about the thoughts and feelings of the ones really in the situation and not like us audience who are merely outsiders who can say whatever righteous things we want..

Well said! There's NO noble idiocy in trying to prevent the traumatic memories of a once abused person, from being recalled. Especially when she's doing so well in the present, is much loved with a warm and vibrant personality. Recall that she still had nightmares and fear from her abuse in the past. If you were in Do Hyun's or Ri On's shoes, you'd probably do the same. Protecting her in this instance, makes TOTAL sense, especially when her motivation to recall these events stem from a desire to help Do Hyun and not from any personal reason.

But I just want them to be together with each other, hugging one another and healing each other's wounds. I agree on the flashbacks: I don't mind it for the first 10 minutes of ep 15 but as I finished ep 16, I have to admit that there's excessive use of flashbacks. Might be due to live shoots. But still loving the show :)

Do Hyun feels guilty and it's understandable he does not want Ri Jin remember their childhood trauma since she's stated she's only doing it for him. I don't know about removing her agency. Nobody is stopping her from consulting Dr Seok, asking her parents questions (and I bet Mr and Mrs Oh know a lot more than they're letting on) or even confronting the Seung Jin group people. What Do Hyun and Ri On are doing is removing Do Ryun from the equation and hope she'll stop digging as a result. What bothers me about this is not that it's noble idiocy, or that it constitutes removing Ri Jin's agency -- it's that it's so ineffectual. Do Do Hyun and Ri On really think she's just going to give up, especially as she knows exactly why Do Hyun terminated their contract (as she explained when Ri On met her on the beach)?

I think purplecow put it very well when she stated what was such a highlight about this show - the fact that it managed to draw comedy out of the most unexpected places without undermining just how serious and tragic Do Hyun's circumstances are. And I miss that part quite a bit with the serious turn this week's episodes took.

However, I get why they had to go there - there's literally NOTHING for anyone to be happy about as the truth bombshells start dropping, and this is one instance where Do Hyun's actions WOULD be undermined if we suddenly had a switch to Yo Na or Ferry Park. He's trying to solve the mystery, protect Ri Jin and take down Seungjin Group, after all - the funny alter egos would only take attention away from it and prevent him from progressing.

I definitely don't see Do Hyun and Ri On as being assholes for preventing Ri Jin from finding out her missing memories in this case, either. I know usually we would argue that the heroine's independent agency should be respected, etc. etc., but from Do Hyun's standpoint, he knows the full extent of her terrible past experiences. Not only that, but he ALSO knows that he's the sole cause of her wanting to recall these memories - Ri Jin has actually told Ri On that she had no curiosity about her past; she only wants to know now because she thinks it would help Do Hyun. You sort of see why he'd feel doubly guilty about prompting the return of her horrible memories in this case and wanting to stop it before it went any further, wouldn't you? As far as Do Hyun is concerned, he has "done enough" to her in the past, has enough to be guilty about in the past towards Ri Jin to want to focus solely on making amends, NOT making her situation worse.

Ri On comes from a similar place - he knows the full extent of the horrors she experienced and knows Ri Jin herself doesn't really have any wish to remember aside from wanting to help Do Hyun with HIS memories. If Ri Jin herself had said she wanted to find out for her own reasons, I think both boys would have thought differently, but as it is... I can see why they did it. Even if Do Hyun and Ri On's actions might be misguided, it's certainly not out of asshole-ish chauvinism or anything.

Agree with your last 2 paragraphs - I still think he's being a frustrating jerk, but I can understand that from where Cha Do Hyun's standing, his primary instinct would be the Noble Idiocy route, because Cha Do Hyun's style is to go into defensive "protective" mode, to minimise damage and clean up the mess that his family has made and inflicted on Ri Jin.

But I think that even Se Gi might not disagree with Do Hyun's approach, since he (SG) effectively said to the Chairwoman that he/Do Hyun should have been left to die in the basement instead of Ri Jin. (But then again, Se Gi showed RJ all those toys to try and jog her memory...)

Of course, both Do Hyun and Ri On are being naive in thinking that they can stop Ri Jin's memories from coming back, now that they've already started returning. That train's already left the station, well and truly.

Also, if Ri On knows that Ri Jin is part of the Seungjin Group's family mystery, he must know that just having Do Hyun stay away from Ri Jin isn't going to resolve things.

he just said he glad his love is alive and never mention about her part in his memory

He want that moment to be lasting forever

and now he give do-hyun time for his own since he said he can handle it but do-hyun as a personality wise, didn't that kind of person

I've been waiting for this recap since forever!!! Thanks Purplecow for churning this out every Sunday. It always a pleasure to see purplecow's insights! I agree that it is all about misery in this episode.

Melo starts from here. I wonder whether the beginning of the episode is what Segi wanted for Rijin when they are trapped in the fire or during the basement. He is always late but he will be there for her. It is so sad because I see both Do Hyun and Segi are now guilty for not protecting Rijin because they always want to keep their promise to her.

As for Do Hyun's Mum, she MUST disappoint me from the beginning till the end. Honestly, I was like Do Hyun. I put a little faith in Mum that she would care for her son. The confession made by Do Hyun was so heart wrenching that I cried at the scene. (Kudos to Jisung for this stellar performance). He was so vulnerable and for the first time, he decide to tell family about it, and Mum totally ruin the moment. I felt so disappointed, together with Do Hyun, in Mum because all she cared was Seungjin group. No wonder Segi is in rage mode when he sees his mother. It made evil Grandma a much better choice for knowing the truth first since she decide to let Do Hyun go back to America, just like he wanted.

And seriously, Chaeyoen did the right thing. I couldn't even dislike her at this stage now. She is manipulative but at least she is honest. I would hate her if she decides to actually trying tear my OTP apart but I shall leave that to later episode recap.

As for Rion, I see the similarity - him and Cha family. Both are trying to cover it up the truth except that Rion is genuinely cared for his sister. When it's Do Hyun, they are always truthful to each other. Yes, they keep things from each other but they never lied when asked. I know his heart is also ripped apart in the process but I hope he can get closure.

Speak of Segi, I don't think Segi disappeared in this episode (it has nothing to do with the next ep too). I could see Segi is coming out when Rion pushed Do Hyun to the wall. Plus he haven't surrender all his memories to Do Hyun, so I think I get to see him for the last time in the last 4 episodes.

And Do Hyun~ just how many times we have been commenting how Puppy is our dear Do Hyun and this ep made Do Hyun into Rina. hahaha. just how self aware this drama is?

(●°u°●) 」

P.S IS RION'S MOVIE STILL IN PRODUCTION? I hope the drama is not going to skip that because it would be so fun to see the movie based on Kill Me Heal Me in KMHM.

Yeah!!! I see ppl commenting mom and grandma is Momster and Grandmomster already. I can't help to agree with them too. The CHA family is so dysfunctional that the Do Hyun is the only decent person in the family. But.....!!! Do Hyun have DID. ಠ_ಠ

Agree about Oh Ri On's movie!!!
And I also just remembered, back then, I ws anticipating about the Asian Festival. I don't know now what will happen but I think we'll see more of the company war this coming Episode 17. I also expect to know about Alex (DH friend in America who was given a large sum of money and was investigated by KJ) and Mr. X!!!

I'm so scared for ep 17. I don't know what is in store. D:

one part of me wanted Alex to go to Korea to expose DH's DID but another part of me would hate it because I really hope Alex is a good man and would be loyal to his friend.

at this point, all the people who really cared for DH are acquaintances: Oh family (don't know his true identity though), RJ and Secretary Ahn.

I need some faith in humanity in KMHM. D:

This episode is heart wrenching. With misery doled out to everyone. But we are dealing with the issue of abuse here, so there's bound to be a lot of that.
I understand where Dohyun is coming from. This is the guy who always bears responsibility for everything. It's keeping with his character that he would do this. We can say that that's two steps back from the progress he's made over the course of the show, but that progress came when he thought HE was the one getting abused. Now comes the realization that one who's truly suffered is the woman who's been right next to him, who's given him hope, love and happiness. That will be a tough pill to swallow for Dohyun. And that makes him truly believe that Rijin not recovering her memories is a way to protect her. Especially when she's doing it not for herself, but for him. He tells her to stop doing it IF it's for his sake and not her own. He should've just left it at that.
Because leaving her doesn't make any sense. That's where I don't like Dohyun's actions. He's the one who wanted to go through everything together and asked her to come to him first if anything happens. If he leaves, what's the point to that. And that too he should remember that this is woman who has believed in him from the get go. The one who kept telling Segi that He could handle it. She's held his hand throughout everything. So he should've done the same for her this time around.
Ask her not to recover her memories.Fine. But if even then the memories continue to come back, then stay with her and help her get through it. As she did when he was the one in pain

Hmm... As much as I understand your frustrations, I am not angry with Do Hyun because this is what he always do. When Do Hyun tries to keep Rijin from remembering the truth, I see him trying to fix things just like when his personalities made troubles. He never gave them a single reason why he made these trouble but he only apologise and fix the mess. Apparently, this method has proved to be efficient (reference to Chaeyeon, Doctor Kim (4th ep remember?)), safe and it works. He is comfortable using this method.

B.U.T I hope writer nim will let Do Hyun redeem himself in the later episodes that this method don't work anymore for Rijin. I wished Rijin will scold or brawl at him for treating her like that.

Yes, that is his M.O. Which is why I'm not mad at him. Just a little frustrated. And that's probably leaking out from the 16th episode. I don't think I was that frustrated when 15 ended. My bad.
Plus, oyu can never be truly mad at Dohyun. He's going through too much without the anger adding to it.

what is a M.O? :/

HAHHA. Omg. Ep 16 have even more angsty scenes but I'm leaving my rant to next episode recap so~

Yeaaaah~ Do Hyun is such a nice man. :D IM SO GLAD THAT OUR FIRST LEAD IS A GEINUINELY A NICE PERSON. When Chaeyeon was not attracted to Do Hyun when Do Hyun was still sort of in love with her, I was like "you don't know what you are missing girl!" |( ̄3 ̄)|

I'm pretty sure she knows that now. :P She was a bit slow in joining the Dohyun club.
I know! My fingers are just twitching waiting for ep 16 so I can rant xD
And M.O is modus operandi; like a habit or a usual way of doing something. :)

no matter what you say I want to be forgiving too but this show suddenly changed the whole vibe, the whole style. no matter what reasoning, I don´t see THAT as necessary. I still love the characters, but gosh, you should have avoided clichés. You were doing it perfectly till now. anyone who says "oh but this angst is necessary" - nope. They PROMISED to overcome ANYTHING. TOgether. are we not men of our word? plus (SPOILER PERHAPS) DH and RO deciding things for Ri Jin - even if she doesn´t exactly let it happen, or on her own terms, it was still not ok.

no matter what, the show should not have made such a shift to the boring predictable tropes.
I can forgive a lot for showing me the fan-made character dolls, but if you continue even one moment longer or bring in the second female lead who should have in fact turned into a poodle in the first episode, then I will find you INVALID!!!!!

what I want to see in the remaining 2 weeks

the poddle girl turned into a handbag
Perry getting a boat he was promised
every alter getting their personal happy end
Ri On becoming a character in someone elses´book
the good old quirky and open relationship between the leads
Secretary Ahn becoming in charge of the whol Cha household and putting the crazy women in their spots
big party with Oh family.

and those character dolls....hey, could they act out a scene with dolls? that would be awesome!!!

it's not change the whole vibe or style at all for me
promised to overcome together is when do-hyun think it's only about her, when even both of them haven't succeded

boring predictable, like they suppose to break up when we predicted it from the 3 month contract, but how then it supposed to do?

I knew some can't handle a heartbreaking story but then this mental health and what happen is sad,
it is unfair to treat this issue lightly and just to hope a drama is loose it main story for happiness they already give

I get how you can't handle it but thanks for watching it, cause on way side of people who find this week is dark, there's some who find it need, and there's some who find it interesting again ^^

I didn't mind the heaviness (that was expected, given the backstory). But I was rolling my eyes thinking "There we go, Korean melo tropes..."
Trope 1: Protecting somebody without telling them what they need to be protected from
Trope 2: Taking the agency from a female character "for her own good".
Trope 3: One-sided break-up without any explanation or attempt to talk to each other
WTF. First of all, it's not like Ri On and Do Hyun can make Ri Jin "un-memorize" what she has already learned about her past, the process has already started.
Second, she should be the one to make the choice - she is a trained therapist, remember?
Third, it's definitely stupid to not tell her anything because the monsters of Seungjin group will still be after her, incomplete memory or not. She should know about that at least.
(On a sidenote, if there was one think that irked me about 'Healer' was the fact that neither Jung Hoo nor Moon Ho told Young Shin)

And I hate the use of the flashbacks because they are not adding something. I would be fine with the high frequency of flashback scenes if they were actually "new" scenes - but they're not. They feel more like "hey, we are life-shooting and don't have enough material so just use the old one again."

Yup. Agree with all of this.

I'm trying to figure out why DH might do something so contradictory to his promise to RJ in the basement. But nothing comes to me.

Trope 2 is the worst trope in the history of tropes I tell you. Like seriously! How can the men in a women's life be so freaking highhanded and condescending and then expect us female viewers NOT to get up in arms about it!

RJ is a doctor - a psychiatrist! Of the three of them, she is the most capable of handling the situation. So why does a guy with DID and a mystery writer (brother or not) think they have the right to decide what's right for her simply because they claim to love her. If they love her, they'll help her not cage her.

I'm reminded of Moon Shik's love for MH. He too thinks its better for her to know nothing. The only difference is that he stayed by her side (for her good)- and here DH is leaving her (for her good).

Just DH and RO arriving at this decision themselves reeks of chauvinism.

hmm... I must say that I disagree with your reference with Healer (I MARATHON 20 EPS WITHIN 2 DAYS WHICH ALSO EXPLAIN WHY I SORT OF DISAPPEARED IN THE PREVIOUS RECAP, i know it's insane. BUT I HAVE TO SAY IT IS A GOOD DRAMA and I love it. :D)

I don't see how Moon Shik's love bears similarity with Do Hyun's love for Rijin.

Moon shik manipulated and lied to her to engineer her thoughts that she is left with nothing except him when she is the most vulnerable. It is all about his interest before MH. Yes, I agree that he is also a tragic character which I can't entirely hate but he could have help her to move on by not being selfish and not leaving her daughter to die on the street.

Do Hyun did not lie or manipulate Rijin to fall in love with him. I don't like the way he collaborated with Rijin to leave her even though it is understandable since he remembered the horror, but he thinks of Rijin before himself.

It would be similar to Segi x Rijin but definitely not Do Hyun x Rijin.

Till Korean drama writers figure out a way for CDH to tell ORJ "Hey those memories you repressed, they are actually you getting horribly abused, by my father. You would get beaten up for mistakes I made. Also when you were recently kidnapped, that was my mother. Let us overcome this together."

I guess running away is the only thing he can do. I assume people here have heard of Survivor's guilt. Till CDH works things out in his head, I don't think he should get back with her. Both of them need to offload the baggage, him especially.

0

@beebeeshing

What I was trying to say , albeit not very well, was that whatever the subconsious motivation of Moon Shik and Do Hyun, they both TELL themselves that thier decision and subsequent actions are "for the good" of the woman in question. We as viewers are expected to hate one and love the other because we are shown their inner motivations. But both of them make the decision for the female.

KMHM might be using it to make DH look good. But , unfortunately, here it is rubbing me the wrong way since it's highly chauvinistic.

SeGi approached RJ knowing full well who she is and what's at risk. He was the one who put himself on a plane and came to Korea. It's quite likely to make sure RJ is safe. That's the behaviour that I like. If SG was in control, he'd have told RO to sc*ew himself. And that he's the most capable of being RJ's best support since they went through this torture together.

btw, my complaints are for episode 15 and 15 alone.

spolier for 16 - RJ totally handles the situation the way I hoped her character would.

0

@aoiaheen:

Oh I see! Now it does make sense.

Hahahahahaha! Omg I could totally imagine how Segi would tell Rion. I would love that scene to happen but unfortunately, our Segi has been hiding for two weeks already. :(

As for Rijin, let's discuss it more in next recap. I can see good discussion topic is waiting for us in the next recap post by Saya already!

Thanks for the recap purplecow! I am still enjoying the show inspite of the recent heaviness. I guess this was expected as we are getting to the final stretch.
I think this episode and the next could have been squeezed into one, if they could judiciously used the stretched flashbacks. I am starting to get desensitized to the abuse of the kids and that's not cool. My reaction was, ok ok we know, can we move on.. And I was ashamed of that ?.
As usual dramaland men always want to protect the delicate female lead, so I am over that debate. It's a given! Despite how strong she is, this shit is like air to dramas. A drama won't be complete without
a) noble idiocy
b) ostensibly needing to "protect" the female lead.. Usually it emotional shielding
c) one of the leads prob will leave for a year, be without contact and then come back in the last 10 mins of the last episode!

Ooohhhh!!!! Good one :) but I am feeling a little sad as if we are suddenly seeing off the other personas of Do Hyun :( , like Se Gi , Yo Sub , CDH suddenly became too strong .... Before this ep I thought the recovery of memory would push Do Hyun to a state where he would lose control of his emotions and personas would appear to cause extreme problems like Se Gi would beat up someone, Yo Sub trying suicide , Yo na appearing Ri On's home but Do Hyun even pushed Se Gi in this ep ...

Still I m hopeful we are going to have glimpses of every persona again :) in coming EPs and yaaahhhh Cha Do Hyun ssi Now that you know who Ri Jin is don't push her away but keep her near to you that's how you can protect her :)

Thanks for the recap.

I hate noble idiocy, it brings about moping and sadness ... but still understand why CDH does it. He believes it all happened because of him and his father abused Ri Jin so he cannot expect her to be happy with him. He feels guilty and thinks distance will help her forget him and the whole sordid mess his parents created.

Still his line of thinking is wrong, he should reveal it all and let Ri Jin decide what she is capable of and what she wishes to do next ... as to her being in danger, you are right about that. All the baddies will try to use her to their advantage. The best help for Ri jin would be to apprise her of the facts.

I appreciated the use of flashbacks, however long they might have been, to tell me the stories of the children. I, as an audience, don't know the OTP's detailed background and I am watching the veil being peeled away layer by layer or creating a picture by adding more details.

I am a counselor working with veterans suffering from PTSD; they talked of their traumas, how they keep reliving it each day through flashbacks and nightmares in an endless loop and how their lives are negatively affected by their inability to disconnect.

Here, the OTP are trying to patch and connect pictures thru the use of flashbacks. Stylistically, I love it because the PD take a flashback in the basement, from close up to long view to show the different perspectives from those who are remembering or recovering these missing memories.

I do have a problem with the men trying to protect the woman because RiJin was never shown to be a weak, helpless woman; for the last 15 episodes, she was shown to be smart, agile in mind and body, expressive, quick-witted, inventive, secure in the love of her family, professionally competent. How in the world did the brother for the 2nd time turn into a patriarchal male who knows better and will decide for your own good. RiOn taught his sister how to be strong, yet wanted her to be weak and forgetful when she needed to be strong.

I forgive Do Hyun for his protective instincts because he was the protector since they were kids; however misguided his motives are, they nonetheless are skewed toward protecting her by giving her the veil of ignorance. His presence is the trigger to her memories and her mental wellbeing; by removing himself, he wants to give her back the stability she had before meeting him. I agree that his reasoning is faulty regarding her safety and still naïve in what monstrous steps his family could take to keep their power. Give him a chance or two for he has never been in love before and he has never faced or dealt with the horror of his life.

The angst, I LOVE IT!!! Because it showcased the superb acting skills of the OTP and cast. I watched it twice, to enjoy it and then to study why the acting, directing worked so well to pull me in so thoroughly.

I waited for this review but felt that people are jumping to conclusions too soon here. The show deals with child abuse and DID. I don't see how they could make this episode funny. More than noble idiocy, the extent of child abuse indicated in this episode was heartbreaking and horrific for me to watch. This was a heavy episode but the truth was going to be dark, DID happens when your mind can't process the pain anymore. This was coming. And since a lot of people have not watched episode 16, I take it so I would just say this, this is not your garden variety Korean drama noble idiocy/separation. If you watch 16, it'll make sense and Ri-Jin is a strong character. She likes making her own decisions and I doubt she'll let others dictate her life.
