Healer: Episode 14
by javabeans
Oof. It’s a wrenching episode, taking us on a roller coaster ride of wild emotional ups and downs. Our hero has to grapple with some weighty, nearly unbearable, burdens, struggling to make sense out of the insensible. Thankfully for him, he isn’t as alone in the world as he thinks he is—and thankfully for us, roller coasters have upswings to counter the violent downs. Up, up, and away!

EPISODE 14 RECAP
Teacher dies. Jung-hoo arrives at the station in time to see his body being wheeled out to an ambulance, and his knee-jerk reaction is to charge at the scene furiously.
Dae-yong and several buddies are thankfully on hand to hold him back, though it’s a struggle. He flings them aside a few times, but they manage to prevent him from being spotted and drag him out of sight. It’s a good thing, too, because Detective Yoon just misses spotting Jung-hoo, keeping Healer undetected for the time being.
Dae-yong blocks Jung-hoo’s path to the car, and Jung-hoo slumps down against it, suddenly weakened. He reels, physically winded.
Then he gets in the car anyway, shoving Dae-yong aside, and drives off. Gah, not in that condition!
Min-ja is just as devastated by the news, and answers Dae-yong’s call with a heavy heart. But she pulls herself together to address the problem of their rogue Healer. So she puts in a phone call to Moon-ho, not bothering to introduce herself; she doesn’t need to, because the second she drops Teacher’s name, Moon-ho’s all ears.
Jung-hoo storms into the hospital with a single-minded goal, and his rage provides a tunnel vision that makes him think nothing of beating down the poor doctors who get in his way. He gets to the morgue efficiently—but once there, he hesitates, trembling in trepidation.
As soon as Moon-ho arrives at the hospital, Detective Yoon recognizes him and stops him to ask a few questions. Moon-ho’s got bigger concerns right now, but he can’t just shake off the curious cop.
Jung-hoo enters the exam room and has difficulty approaching the body, his hands shaking as he draws back the sheet. One look at Teacher’s face is all he needs, and the tears spring forth immediately, even as he says, “It’s not true, right? I remember how you played a trick on me last time just like this, you know. So get up. Teacher.”
He asks pleadingly, but reality is slowly setting in. Slowly, Jung-hoo sinks to the ground in a crouch.
Detective Yoon leads Moon-ho down to the morgue, and along the way they encounter the unconscious orderly in the hallway. While the detective calls for help, Moon-ho hurries forward to the morgue ahead of him—but when he arrives, the exam room is empty.
Moon-ho moves to draw the sheet over Teacher’s head, but pauses—this must be the first time in over a decade that he’s seen his hyung’s face. He wells up with tears.
When the detective asks how he knows Teacher, Moon-ho replies that this man was like family to him. Tears dripping down his face, Moon-ho leans over the body and promises, “Hyung, I’ll take care of this now.”
His reaction to the supposed Healer’s death naturally makes the detective wonder, and I’m hoping this doesn’t signal complications for Moon-ho… even though it totally will, right? Detective Yoon calls for reinforcements to beef up his investigation, and anticipates that they’ll have “guests” dropping in to get Teacher’s statement. They’ll have to set a trap.
As Jung-hoo drives off, he thinks back to earlier days with Teacher, such as the time he’d proudly presented Jung-hoo with home-cooked birthday soup (which did not go well). Then there was the time Jung-hoo had presented Teacher with his high school equivalency certificate and “won” a promised briefcase from the Teacher (which was full of porn, HA).
A car overtakes him on the road, then screeches to a halt in front of him, forcing Jung-hoo to stop. Jung-hoo tries to drive around it, but Moon-ho literally puts himself in front of the car, then grabs to hold Jung-hoo back while explaining that a woman called to tell him he’d be coming this way. And that he’d be out to kill.
Moon-ho blocks his path with his body and pleads, “Don’t do it! Don’t! You’d become a murderer because of bastards like that? Why?!” Moon-ho continues to try to stop Jung-hoo, who keeps knocking him aside, not giving up even after receiving several hard blows. Jung-hoo isn’t so far gone that he’ll seriously hurt Moon-ho, though, and stops himself from delivering a severe punch. Moon-ho gasps out that his teacher wouldn’t have wanted him to do this.
Jung-hoo asks in frustration what he has to do, and Moon-ho’s promise to figure something out isn’t good enough—he needs something now. He bursts out that he’s like this because there’s nothing he can do, so he demands that Moon-ho tell him something.
Moon-ho yells back that he’s felt this way for the past twenty years, fighting the frustration of being unable to do anything. Oof, you know, that is a very good point.
“So just give me a little time,” Moon-ho asks. “I’ll find a way.”
But now Jung-hoo turns the blame inward: “I called Teacher here. He didn’t want to come, but I called him. I made him talk about things he didn’t want to talk about, and got angry when he did. And because I was angry, even though he was here for the first time in eight years, we didn’t eat a single meal together. But that damned old man…”
Jung-hoo’s really struggling, and Moon-ho tells him to go ahead and cry. Instead, Jung-hoo bellows his frustration, then gets back in his car. Moon-ho blocks his car door and swears to take down every single evildoer and make them pay for their crimes, asking Jung-hoo to trust him.
Jung-hoo asks, “How? Aside from stopping me, what can you do?” Moon-ho doesn’t have an answer, and he finally steps back. Jung-hoo drives off.
Moon-shik receives reporters at home for an interview, now that he’s a mayoral candidate, and Myung-hee keeps up appearances as the loving wife in front of the cameras. But her face is stony when she listens to Moon-shik giving his interview, as he laughs how it’s both his strength and weakness that he’s exactly the same on the inside and outside: “I can’t hide a thing!”
Young-shin is puzzled when she can’t get a hold of Bong-soo. The boys were at her place all night working, and he supposedly only stepped out to go running, but never returned. Reporter Yeo points out that Bong-soo has a habit of running away in fear at nighttime or at dawn, and speculates that he must’ve seen something that scared him off… insinuating that Young-shin spooked him with her behavior, ha.
He and Editor Jang look at her expectantly for an explanation of what she did to run him off, but she doesn’t have to give one since Moon-ho arrives to explain Bong-soo being absent today.
Young-shin proposes to Moon-ho that they interview Moon-shik, saying that she’d like to tell him directly that they find his past shady so they can get his response to it. The problem is that he might decline a request for interview, so she asks Moon-ho to pull some strings, since he’s his brother.
“From today, he isn’t,” Moon-ho replies, startling her. “I’ve decided that Kim Moon-shik and I are not brothers. Not anymore.”
Despite the surprise, Young-shin doesn’t ask questions, saying merely that she’ll try getting the interview on her own. She admits to a particular interest in the wife, having read about how amazingly close the spouses’ relationship is. She allows that Moon-ho knows his brother and must have good reason to consider him unfit for office—but perhaps a man who is so devoted toward one woman all his life isn’t all bad. At the very least, she’d like to meet the wife and draw her own conclusions. Moon-ho agrees to think about it, which she takes as a positive sign.
She asks if he talked to Bong-soo, and he just says that he must be out with a cold. Young-shin starts texting Bong-soo, but deletes each attempt. First she asks “Bong-soo-ya” if he’s sick, and then she asks more formally, “What is your name?” Finally she sets the phone aside, not texting after all.
At her desk, Min-ja sets a shot of soju before a photograph of Teacher and asks him to wish her luck—she’s about to resurrect some long-dormant superpowers. Then she gets to business, unleashing her full hacker skills on her keyboard, which soon goes detected by the police department. Detective Yoon races to his terminal to get in on the action, recognizing the hacking pattern, a look of gleeful anticipation on his face as he counters.
Flashback: Min-ja is the lead cop on a stakeout, with a young Detective Yoon weathering the brunt of her rebukes as she outlines the importance of the case they’re working on. They have to wait for a warrant to be issued before charging in, but until then they have to make sure their targets don’t catch wind and delete their computer files.
While they’re waiting, Min-ja takes a call with her irate husband, who screams, “You call yourself a mother?!” It’s because she won’t leave the stakeout, although Detective Yoon overhears and urges her to go, because her four-year-old is in the hospital after yet another surgery. Just then the warrant is issued, and Min-ja orders her team into action, choosing work again.
In the present, Detective Yoon springs the trap. But Min-ja outmaneuvers him, freezing the system while she downloads the files she needs.
This hack brings back more painful memories, and the next flashback shows her husband accusing her of not being a mother, because she wasn’t there when her child died. Making things even worse, her police boss issues orders from above to cover up the case and delete those hard-earned files after all.
Well, it’s no wonder she quit the force after that. Ajumma raises a sardonic toast to Teacher and drinks.
She hacks into the Healer pad to tell Jung-hoo that she got Teacher’s recorded statement, which sounds to her like a message meant for Jung-hoo. Jung-hoo watches Teacher’s video, where Teacher says that he never gave too much thought to the jobs he took on, but ought to have. If he had, those thoughts could’ve been his signboard, directing him where to go when he felt lost, warning him of cliffs or construction ahead, or to turn around.
When asked whether he murdered Go Sung-chul on commission, Teacher replies that he doesn’t accept those jobs:
Teacher: “If a person kills another person, they become inhuman. You should die a person. That way, you can reunite with those people you want to see again, those who left before you. There’s one thing I regret: I should have quit from the start.”
That’s when Teacher turns away from the detective and faces the camera instead: “Give it up. Go live with the woman you love, raising two kids, a dog, two cats, a few goldfish. I should have.”
Shaken and confused, Jung-hoo can only ask in a small lost voice, “Why?”
Ajumma advises Jung-hoo to honor Teacher’s dying wishes, and offers to make him a new identity, or to solidify Bong-soo’s. But Jung-hoo says heavily, “It’s too late. She already knows everything. Who I am.”
Then he corrects himself: “No, not everything. She doesn’t know that being with me will bring her pain. That it might even kill her.” He ignores ajumma’s barrage of questions, saying that there’s nothing he can do but sleep.
So he sets out unplugging all his computers, pulls the battery out of his phone, removes his watch and ring, and heads for bed. Checking out of life for the time being.
Moon-ho drops by the ABS station, and although his former boss Min-jae is still peeved at him for the press conference stunt, she agrees to a chat. Moon-ho apologizes for putting her in a bad position, then explains how a close hyung recently died, and that he thinks he knows who killed him. Then there’s another guy who used to be close to him in childhood, who has been out of touch for three days.
Min-jae’s understandably frosty with him and tells him impatiently to get to the point. Moon-ho’s answer is a bit surprising—that she is the only name saved in his phone as a friend, and today he’s here to talk to a friend. “Because I have nobody to talk to.”
Min-jae notes that despite Moon-ho’s image as a fearless figure, she knows he’s actually the opposite: “You only ever fight when you won’t get hurt. You run away when you meet someone frightening, using an appropriate excuse.” She tells him it’s nothing to be ashamed of, however, “Since we’re all like that.”
Young-shin and Jong-soo get busy working on the Moon-shik story, and in between interviews she tries to track down Bong-soo at home using his resumé address, which turns out to be nonexistent. She sends him messages chiding him for skipping work when they’re short-staffed, her voicemails going from concerned to stern to threatening, warning that he’s missed his forgiveness window.
But by the fifth day, her voice is scared as she sits in the dark, asking, “Did I… do something wrong? Is it because I said I would wait that you can’t come? Should I have said I wouldn’t wait… that you shouldn’t worry? Should I cancel what I said?”
ABS schedules a talk with Moon-shik as a live broadcast, and Moon-ho decides to use that as Someday’s next broadcast. As soon as Moon-shik answers a question on air, within the next ten minutes, Someday will counter that answer.
Of course, that requires them to know what questions will be asked. But Moon-ho knows his brother will only answer questions that have been prepped in advance, and turns to his spy, asking if he’d like to be a double agent. Jong-soo would NOT, thank you very much, but really, there’s no refusing. He nervously agrees.
Moon-ho finds Young-shin still huddled in the dark, and she jumps up guiltily. He asks for her phone, and she assumes she’s in trouble and promises not to make any more personal calls on the job, only to have him punch in a number—it’s Myung-hee’s. He gives permission to use his name in asking for an interview, and Young-shin excitedly hurries off to make the call.
At home, Myung-hee heads into her husband’s empty office and tries opening his desk drawers. They’re locked shut, to her disappointment—but she catches a glimpse of something mounted to the underside of the desk. A button.
She presses it, and bookshelves slide open to reveal the secret space behind it, where the hidden TV screens are mounted. That’s when she gets Young-shin’s call, and more surprising than her request is the news that Moon-ho is her boss at Someday—all this while, she thought he was still at the broadcast station. Wow, she has really been kept cut off from the world.
Myung-hee’s also surprised that Moon-ho would have given her number to a reporter, as he knows that she doesn’t meet people. But she likes the sound of Young-shin’s voice and asks for time to consider, and Young-shin thanks her enthusiastically.
Min-ja sends Dae-yong on the rounds to track down all of Jung-hoo’s vehicles, trying to pinpoint his whereabouts. But everything looks untouched, and Min-ja deduces that this means Jung-hoo isn’t moving at all, which suggests he’s holed himself up at home. Dae-yong offers to go in person, but Min-ja says that even if she showed up there, she couldn’t get inside without Jung-hoo’s permission.
Next thing you know, ajumma charges into the Chae family cafe (yesssssssss) like she owns the place, ordering ajusshi to open half an hour early and demanding a female server. Haha. I love how she doesn’t explain a thing, and just lets them think she’s a weirdo.
Min-ja imperiously motions Young-shin aside to take her order, and Young-shin complies, despite her bafflement. Once Young-shin sits down, ajumma asks if she recognizes her voice, and repeats her words from her previous call to jog her memory.
Young-shin gasps upon recognition, suddenly alert and pelting her with questions. She says that Bong-soo’s been unreachable for days, her worry obvious.
Ajumma asks for her phone and links it to a device, fiddling with it as she tells her that Bong-soo’s been immobile for six days, probably not eating. She’s certain he won’t let her in, which leaves one option: to force him to open the door himself.
Understanding what she’s getting at, Young-shin asks tearfully, “Is he… okay? Is he not okay?” (I notice she’s now calling him “that person”—her way of referring to the Healer—instead of Bong-soo.) She grabs ajumma’s hand and begs her to tell her where to find him.
Ajumma notes Young-shin’s vehement reaction and replies, “I had to see your eyes.” Then she hands her back the phone, all the information there at her fingertips.
Young-shin follows the directions to Jung-hoo’s building, her lock-picking skills coming in handy in getting past the first locked door. She heads up the elevator, through the dilapidated warehouse floor, up some crumbling stairs, and to a seeming dead end. There’s nowhere to go from here, but the signal on her phone indicates that this is where she should be.
So Young-shin starts tapping on the walls and calling out for Bong-soo. Getting no response, she pulls out her tools and finds a stethoscope, using it to listen through the wall… and then she hears something click. A sign dangling on the opposite wall moves, and when she moves it again, the wall springs open.
Cautiously, she steps inside the inner lair—and there he is, in bed, looking half-dead.
Young-shin races to his side, and as she reaches to call for an ambulance, Jung-hoo’s eyes slowly open. She tells him gently, “Bong-soo-ya, I’m here.”
He sighs, “Daebak.” Which, all things considered, is hilarious. He reaches his hand out to touch her face, wondering at this dream. He murmurs that he’s cold, and at that she climbs in bed with him and cradles his head in her arms. It’s incredibly sweet. And as she holds him close, he snuggles into her side.
Some time later, he wakes up, alone in bed. Young-shin comes up holding a ladle (and are those his clothes she’s wearing?), holding it out for him to taste.
He struggles to get up, not at all happy to see her. She disregards his displeasure and informs him that she’s put in a personal day at work and intends to stay till tomorrow, and that he’ll eat her cooking whether he likes it or not.
He tells her wearily that this is no place for her, and that she should leave: “Forget this place, and don’t come back.”
His demeanor is cold and uninviting, and Young-shin looks at him intently and asks if this is the real him. Bong-soo didn’t talk like that, “But you’re a little scary.” She informs him that it’s dark and late, so she’ll leave tomorrow if he wants.
Ignoring his surliness, Young-shin sets him up comfortably and presents him with dinner. His mood darkens further as he grabs Young-shin’s things, thrusting them at her and pushing her toward the exit.
She whirls out of reach, refusing to leave, and he’s frankly too weak to do much else. Staggering closer, he asks in exasperation, “Why do you have so little fear?”
She replies, “I’m not afraid of you.” He points out that he’s hiding more from her than she could even guess, and she answers, “I don’t care.” He fires back, “Are you an idiot?”
“Don’t send me away,” she says. “If you send me away, you’ll cry forever.”
He says bleakly, “I could get you hurt.” She shakes her head, full of certainty: “No, you won’t get me hurt. Never.”
He struggles with himself, then grabs her wrist to drag her out. But she stops him, turning him toward her and pulling him into a hug. “Don’t send me away,” she asks again.
Jung-hoo’s face crumples in tears, and then he buries his face in her neck and grabs tight.
She holds him like that for a long moment, and then pulls back to wipe his tears from his face. She kisses him.
COMMENTS
So many things to write about, and they’re not even about that kiss! (Although, eeee, that kiss!)
I was really happy with where this episode took Moon-ho—even as far as yesterday I wasn’t sure what direction he would ultimately take, but today solidified his place standing alongside the Healer. I know he’d declared his intention to work together in the last episode, but it took seeing his old hyung cold and dead on that slab to finally cut the cord, and to realize that his brother had in fact crossed the line fully, that he couldn’t spare him from justice. I don’t think he was necessarily waiting for his brother to redeem himself, but he had enough hope that he wasn’t so far gone.
So now that he knows Moon-shik would (and has) killed, he’s finally ready to take the stand he’s been waffling on taking for the past twenty years. Moon-ho really is the linchpin in this entire story, because even now he possesses more information than anybody else, and it isn’t until he makes the decision that our mother-daughter reunion can start on its path. I suppose if he had had his brother’s ambition his kind of masterminding might be an ominous thing, but as Min-jae rightly points out, Moon-ho is actually rather timid. Good-intentioned, but lacking the courage to fight the big fight.
I guess that’s why he needs Healer and Young-shin on his team to see through the final takedown of the Elder. And while it sucks to have Jung-hoo so shaken by the loss of Teacher, it’s the perfect narrative catalyst to bring them together—because till now, they’ve shared the general stance of being anti-Moon-shik, but differed in their personal motivations. Jung-hoo doesn’t care about the Elder beyond what he does to people he loves, so he isn’t swayed by Moon-ho’s appeals for greater justice. Now, though, Teacher’s death provides a link, and I’m excited to see how these two work together from here on out. One brotherly bond may be severed, but who says another one can’t be formed? (As for the baddies, we’re still unclear on what exactly the Elder does, but based on what we know thus far, I’m imagining a shadow society of elites who manipulate all aspects of society to benefit themselves—I’m thinking Kishokai of Gaksital, for instance.)
I loved how the show depicted Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing Teacher, which felt real and raw, and bolstered by acting that totally made me cry along with the characters. There was an immediacy to Jung-hoo’s grief that I found powerful, and am so happy to see Ji Chang-wook become this character so wholly.
More than the kiss itself (although again, eeee!), I was moved by Jung-hoo’s reaction to Young-shin’s stubborn insistence on staying with him—the anger, confusion, fear, and eventual acceptance. Most of the time, noble idiocy in dramaland arises when a character pushes someone away “for their own good” in a situation where that angst is unnecessary, hence the idiocy part of the term. But it’s not noble idiocy when the reasons are credible, and it makes perfect sense that Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing one of the last loved ones in his life is to shut down entirely, especially when he blames himself for that death.
The heartbreaking thing is that the Teacher did totally die for him, indirectly; I don’t think he knew he was going to die, but you get the sense that Teacher would willingly do it again and feel it was worth the cost. He wasn’t able to protect the baby bears through the end of their lives, but he made good on his promise by protecting them through the end of his. But to Jung-hoo, all he sees is that people around him die, and that’s devastating in a twofold way: first, he costs good people their lives, and second, he then has to live in a world where they’re dead.
So he’s become deathly afraid of building any sort of meaningful relationship, because every time it burns him, it cuts deeper and deeper. Yet in comes charging this girl who refuses to let him bully her away, informing him that she will stay put, and refusing to accept his fear of hurting her. Moreover, she isn’t about to let him sink into self-ruin, and insists on taking care of him. Young-shin is totally badass in all the best ways, and she just keeps getting better.
I love how he sees her next to his bed and sighs that it must be a dream, and only in his half-conscious state does he allow her to come close. Despite the fact that they totally got to snuggle in bed together, I appreciate that the scene wasn’t sexy in the least, but more poignantly sweet, letting our damaged hero find some comfort while his guard is lowered. When he’s fully awake, you can see how much he wishes he could believe her while his head warns him not to… but thankfully for all of us, there’s only so much denial you can handle before you cave and have to accept it already. (Accept the truth, kisses and all!) Somehow it feels fitting that he gets to be with his girl against the backdrop of his imagined paradise, ’cause I think he’s doing just fine where he is in his reality, once he finally allows himself his honesty.

So seeing how the writer loves to torment JH, who else thinks that something might happen to YS?
I have a feeling a scenario is going to happen where YS is going to take a bullet for JH

I agree! I just feel like something else will happen to YS. A bullet is completely feasible. If not YS, then most likely YS biological mom will be hurt trying to protect YS. Oh the possibilities!

The Ending theory for me
I believe that just like their parents they will become the Healers of society. They will finish what their parents didn’t finish. Jung hoo, moon ho, and young shin and of course ahjumma will be working together to clean society from corruption.
And hopefully a happy ending for our beautiful young couple.
What are your thoughts and theories for the endings? :)

I really think Myung-hee is going to get hurt. She's starting to ask "too many" questions and it's just a matter of time that the Elder is going to take things in his own hands when he realizes Moon-shik can't. It better be after she gets her reunion with Young-shin!

Yes as cliche as it may be, I really really think it'll happen (similiar to what Nana did in City Hunter)

You know...I have been thinking about the ending but I have no idea how it is going to play out. Even if I think of a scenario, I bet that it would be executed differently than I expected so I am at a lost for words. Surprise me writers like you have done so greatly.

Same here, I've been thinking about the ending of Healer too and i'm hoping that it will be something relating to JH's island dream like a vacation or something cool as i think it would be a nice touch but a little bit to predictable. That's why I'm so conflicted because i want them to have a happy ending after those hardships but then i also want it to be cool and unexpected

I thought the same thing today. He feels a lot of guilt for having been silent. It could be his way to redeem himself. I've actually grown to like him also, so I do not want him to die. But I will not be happy if anything happens to the other two.

Miranda, I have a feeling that it will be Moon-ho too. In an earlier episode, when he was talking to Min-Jae (boss in the news station when she visited his home after he quit), he mentioned that when everything is done (with what he needs to fix), he will move faaar away. Foreshadowing. I would love to be proven wrong 'cause he's one of my favorite characters, but I've braced myself for that dire possibility so that I won't be too devastated...

His crying made me start crying. I found it incredibly realistic - especially the whimpering/breathing hard sounds and the trembling.

I've rewatched that scene so many times and it guts me every single time! When javabeans said JCW's acting was so raw and real... this episode especially showcased all of it! When he started to cry and dug his face into her neck further, my heart couldn't take it! Even at the thought of it, my heart starts to cave again. Brilliant!

true!true!true! When i watched that scene over and over again, my heart was always skipped a beat, i'm totally can relate to his frustation, his anger, his pain, his sorrow. I bet he felt so overwhelmed with guilt and sadness, a total dark zone he must have. So he built that wall around him, even to his most beloved person, but thank God that our CYS is not easily budge. She's such a compatible partner for him!she said the right word that really hit his senses, that she won't leave him, he won't be alone, even in his darkest time. She offer him an unconditional love, and he finally realize that. So the wall were broken down, and the way she let him sob, it's not like "I'll cry with you" kinda thing, but "you just go a head and cry, i'll shed the tears for you, you just go a head and be weak, i'll be strong for you" kinda thing. love this scene to every bit!

Took me a while to realize his home was sorta like his heart. So many walls and secret doors to get in. The two people who actually got in was Teacher and CYS. And so cold and dark inside.
I loved Ji Chang Wook's acting in that seen. Well he's been good throughout but that was another level for me. I've watched the ending of 14 multiple times already and I still get floored.

Nice analogy blo, his home is like his heart or how he tries to protect his heart.
What struck me most in the flashbacks to Jung Hoo's young adulthood is that he was an affectionate child/person. Even with Teacher's rough upbringing through teasing and baiting JH, JH felt cared for and reciprocated with warmth and trust.
It is because he had been hurt so many times that he built walls with locked doors around his heart and looked to escape to his island. Inside his heart, although it seemed dark and cold, it was just a facade hiding the big, bright picture of that sunny island. JH probably did not realise that he had that sunny island full of the potential to love and give, inside him, until YS unlocked the door and slipped inside.
It is right and fitting that the only island he can and should take his girl away to, is the sunny one in his heart. :)

yeah... i watched that snuggle-closer scene for the nth time. i like it way more than the kiss - though his expression just before the kiss, when there are still tears in his eyes, gets to me...
that snuggle scene is the best, though - she's his safe haven. and not a work spoken to tell us so.

Thanks for the, as always wonderful, recap. This tide me over while waiting for the subs. Ji Chang Wook's acting in this episode is just awesome. All the sweet moments - daebak! It makes me sad though that others would bash other perfectly good actors when this thread is for our thoughts on Healer. As I love so much this drama, my heart fills with joy when I read all others' wonderful thoughts about each episode - like being with kindred spirits...I'm not alone in abusing the replay button! But it's sad when others would bash other actors that have nothing to do what-so-ever in this wonderful drama. Peace everyone.

I think this was discussed upthread. The car was still in the placed where Bong Soo parked it, across the mall. The hospital is in the vicinity of the mall. So we assume CYS walked there and back when she checked the compartments for clues. After Bong Soo was discharged, Dae Young got the key from CYS and she said she would get the car and pick him up at the front of the hospital.

but also, while she doesn't have a license, who knows what she learned from those convicts her dad lawyered for? if she can finagle a door open, maybe she can also drive a car :D
she wouldn't have had to drive, though. she called an ambulance and they drove them to the hospital, and she still had the keys because she was left to wait in the car by JH before he went in. he wouldn't have let her locked inside the car. and then DY went away to fetch the car, which she may have had driven closer to the hospital too, cause she can also b&e things. i think...

Sub-thread: THE EPISODE WITH THE MOST ...
Most mirthless smiles episode - When I was watching Ep 13, I found myself noticing so many scenes where people were smiling, but not in a friendly way, in fact there might have been a gritting of teeth instead. There was JH with Moon Ho, Young Jae with Moon Shik, Myung Hee with Moon Shik and maybe more.
What did you notice about Episodes 13 and 14?

Moru Moru island in the game is a nowhere/anywhere island. I think the word "moru" means "don't know" or something like that.
JH's dream paradise is supposed to be an uninhabited island, somewhere off Panama, with its own water source. Am not sure if that is the island in the picture, or just a random picture of an island to stand for JH's dream.
In an earlier thread, there were some comments about the metaphorical connection between the two islands.

I know that since Healer aired, plenty here haven't had enough time to watch other dramas (except, perhaps, those which have JCW).
Has anyone noticed that some just recently finished and currently airing kdramas have themes/motifs that overlap? After It's Okay, It's Love, which tackled mental disorders, we have two currently airing dramas on multiple personalities -- Kill Me, Heal Me (on its third week) and Jekyll, Hyde, Me (on its premiere week).
Pride and Prejudice (just finished) and Punch (currently airing) both focus on prosecutors.
Then there's the media-related theme of Pinocchio, which resonates with a sub-motif of Healer (how gatekeepers of the news can twist the truth for their own nefarious ends; how big corporations actually hold media outlets by the neck).
A year or so ago, time travel was a favourite theme. I wonder what new or not-so new themes will emerge in 2015-2016.

I noticed prior to starting Healer that mental disorders was to be the new trend. I often check asianwiki to see what new dramas are coming up. As for Pinocchio, I only knew because it was mentioned in some Healer discussion.
But aside from that, like you, I can't watch anything else except shows with JCW. I tried starting Punch, which I still intend to watch... but every time I saw the character names Park Jung-hwan, Lee Tae-joon and Jung Gook-hyun in the subtitles..... I swear, I kept seeing Jung-hoo instead.

it's a mind-meld things volcanians do. i imagine all writers lately have mr. spock as an ancestor lol. they all "discover" the same themes to use at the same time.
jokes aside, it's something to be concerned with, i think :( it shows networks are looking for scripts that are about things trending at a certain time or that seem to catch the interest of people for a while.
i'd very much love if instead of following trends, and having lots of competing mental-health or journalism or sageuk dramas all out for an audience that can't choose something different if it wants, we'd get something different from everyone else. here a sageuk, there some reporters, there a mental patient etc.
then again, there are those undercurrents and clichees that one just can't escape. romance and it's woes, for example...
and it does help if one drama, even if similar in large margins to others, gives us such great acting and writing, so that all else pales in comparison :D
(p. s. is healer even about reporting? JH definitely doesn't care, even if YS and MH think journalism hung the moon. healer is more about people finding each other even after having to go through years' worth of wall-building around their hearts... and maybe, umm, healing each other through love? :D)

Don't know if anyone else had this reaction cuz I've been enjoying all y'alls posts here and on a few forums and no one has mentioned it that I saw but....
When JH starts to crack and storms the morgue, flattening doctors left and right, his menacing singularity of purpose to see Teacher...it was so disturbing....and also poetically athletic, and strong, and ummm..*looks left sheepishly* quite possibly the absolutely HOTTEST thing I have seen in Healer. His eyes were so cold and scary and.....just...HAWT.... blink blink.
It really took me aback, because first of all, Bong Sookie of course isnt anything like that, Healer wasnt even like that beating up the Bad Guy... JH is rarely like that...only when he was leaving the hospital and roughed up Minion did we see anything close (I also found that disturbingly Amazingly Hotttt...maybe I need counseling?!)
Even more intriguing, as JCW as a person has such boyish charm, those scenes were just such a departure! !! His eyes, man Im tellin' ya....it was like someone else.
Anyone else? Or am I a bit freaky on this?! :-/

I noticed and mentioned before that it is strange how some themes or similarities are chosen for a period of time and then 2 or more shows pick it up. I was asking if anyone knew how this happened.
The other one's I noted were the time travel shows, the ex-couple shows, the seeing ghost shows, maybe even the noona romances. It's strange to me that they come out/are aired close together in time. Maybe all writers have a convention every year and decide to cover a few themes together??? :D

First, I think it was consistent with how JH's character is written (remember the scenes at school when he beat up the kid who pitied him? And he must have had anger issues because he spent time in juvie).
Second, I quite like the fact that he is not a perfect hero (saint-like heroes are annoying) and it makes him more human to lose it (but not enough to hurt them, just to cold-efficiently get them out of his way).
What he is feeling here is quite certainly blind rage. Compare that to the scene with Dae Young - he just bulldozes through any obstacle in his path. Did you notice that he turned the door knob with bare hands? He tends to make mistakes whenever he is really emotional (see: carelessly leaving the phone in Bong Soo's coat, trying to open Secretary Oh's car door - full frontal view etc.)
Third, too impatient to sneak in (which would need calm planning).

Frankly, I was a bit perturbed too.
And I also feel bad for minion Dae Young. Man, Jung Hoo doesn't even treat her like a girl. Would it kill him to be a little nicer? She's always been such a loyal dongsaeng to her hyung, after all.
Anyway, these are just minor quibbles. I looove the guy, but yeah I kinda wish JH would be a little less aggressive.
But like what @Maria said, I appreciate the fact that he's not a perfect hero. His flaws make him seem very human.

Actually, I liked that he did not go easy on Dae Young JUST because she is a girl. If he does that for Young Shin (pulling away his hand after she faked that it hurt her) that's totally fine but I don't like it if guys go easy on their opponents in martial art fights because of their gender.
I guess he sees her as a little brother more than a girl - and that is fine by me, girl can handle the punches he throws at her.
Of course, he was still being an a.. because he should have noticed that Dae Young just wanted to help him and lashing out at her (and those doctors) was misdirected.
Still, I welcome those scenes because a non-perfect character is more human. JH alredy is such an almost-too-good-to-be-true character not only because of his Healer parcour/fighting abilities but also because he grew up into a nice, sane, gentle, compassionate person even after all those childhood traumata. Having a flaw or two (night-errand boy lack of morality and JH's rage) is okay in my book.
P.S: I still don't think he is "hot" in those scenes, but that might be just me, I love Bong-Sookie types more than alpha males or bad boys.

parallel: he took down the two doctors fast and efficient-like, and still he didn't hit or put down dae-young and her buddies, even if the doctors and DY were doing the exact same thing: keeping him from going to teacher to make sure.
he does care, but she's not his buddy, she's his helper and he treats her like a less-partner rather than like a girl (she's his dongsaeng, she must be really much younger than his chara. she's a kid in his eyes, not a girl. he'd have done the same with a boy helper.)
i think the fast and violent removal of the doctors from his path is also caused by having had to wait to reach teacher, too. he wasn't sure but growing horribly certain it wouldn't be a practical joke from teacher, he hasn't the patience to smooth talk people into letting him inside, or try some disguise, he needs to know.
and his next reaction, after becoming sure teacher really is dead, is to go out and kill KMS. all his barriers gone, like that.
i loved that MH stopped him, even if he did it because of his own fear - and having been pushed by ahjumma - but teacher's last words to JH showed him how he escaped being forever separated from everyone - he'd have become a beast, and teacher wouldn't have ever had condoned it.
that violence came from the part of him who never got tamed, the part that landed him in juvie. scary, too. but it places all the small nice gestures - like moving YS to the other way of the boardwalk when she wasn't paying attention to traffic, or being the nice unresenting son to his mother, etc - into a much better light.
he COULD have been the bad guy all along, he has it in him, but he IS NOT. yet another layer of this chara, i'm starting to fear healer withdrawal symptoms and there are 6 more hours of goodness to watch!

My heart aches every time I rewatch this episode. It makes my heart bleed for Jung Hoo. It’s so sad. My eyes tear up every single time. You feel his sadness and unbearable loneliness. :( :( :( it's incredibly saddening if you think about it realistically, someone to have gone through all that loneliness without any mother, father or friends is pretty lonesome. After having watched them live, then raw, then raw again then subbed by MyAsianTV.com and then also by VIKI.com through the UK portal, I am here to tell you that the subtitles in DramaFever are SO MUCH BETTER than the other sites. They seem to capture the nuances so much better. It fits beautifully. Well worth watching on DF also for the beautiful high definition. Aren't shows on Dramafever subbed by the viki team? So are the ones aired by myasiantv. So the subs should be the same. the images/definition would be different, though, as you say. Also, subbed versions watched early on have missing subs. So sometimes, one has to rematch after a day or two to get the complete subs.

agree. i watched a few eps with viki subs, which are faster, but there are some turns of phrase used in those that are harder to understand for a a non-native english speaker. the meaning is coming though, but one has to struggle a bit.
the DF subs make more sense and seem to flow better, imho. and better edited, maybe? i don't care for song lyrics, myself, so it's not a loss if they're not on the sub.
when one's impatient, though, any sub is great, the faster the better. then again, for later enjoyment... :D

Sub-thread: COUNTDOWN AND RECORD BREAKING
We've been quieter about this, for this episode, because although we want a really big figure for comments this and every episode, we also want that figure to reflect our thoughts, feels, squees and analyses and therefore, our love for Healer. So this is not just commenting to raise the comment count, but to make others aware that we've found such a gem, that we can't help but be hyped up about it, and wish they could join us too.
Record breaking target for this Episode:
- We broke the 2,362 record twice already. So next is to break the 2,362 comments record another 2 times (becos K2H broke it 3 times, LOL!) Details (From Ep 12 Recap Comment 402 from Bongsookie ...
- Once we've got beyond 2,362, we only have our own records to break. We can aim to go beyond 3,000 a 3rd time
AND / OR
- We can aim to break through our own 4,030 comments record! (Good luck to us!!! LOL!)
And remember, we don't want to wipe out JB's email inbox with comments only about comments, although I find that very funny and fun as well! Heheheh!

The comments here are actually very substantial both in numbers and in substance. Because there is more thought put into the comments, the figures will rise more slowly, this recap, but that is a good thing and what the comments section is for. With more to think about, there will be more to say.
There seems to be no end to things to talk about and to consider, such as events that can be linked, analogies that can be made, character growth and dissection, revelations and back stories. I am hopeful that we might still be able to make it past 2,100 in another day. :)

On the topic of recognition for the memorable acting in Healer, top actor status and whatnot...
It seems like it may be similar to the US in that once you are at a certain level of popularity, your freedom is pretty much truncated...you're recognizable everywhere and you live a somewhat jailed existence?
The opposite of the Healer character for some actors , but still Im sure quite lonely - to not be able to walk the streets or hit a shopping mall without paparazzi and armed security and a small mob following behind....?
Maybe it's not as bad in Korea for these guys. CYS said she had a better perspective for members of the press now.
Nicole Kidman mentioned she loves living in Nashville, because a famous face doesnt get you a side glance and it is freeing. So maybe there's that....
Anyone have insight?

From everything I've read, it's FAR worse for celebrities in Korea because the fans are fanatics. I imagine so many celebs are holed up in secure high-rise apartments. Just today I thought about JCW sitting with his friends at home drinking beer and eating chicken as they watch each episode. Imagine at the end of episode 14, his friends, "Whoa, DUDE, can you totally hear the screaming of women all around the world?"
It's part of why K-pop stars and actors sign iron-clad contracts with their agencies and they are basically forbidden to date or to make any relationship public because of the ire of the fans and the fear of lessened agency income if fans think a star is "taken". That's why, just if they go out on a date, it's a SCANDAL!!! Can you imagine? There's no comparison to the real scandals our American celebrities create. Yuck!

January 22, 2015 at 2:12 PM
The level of fanaticism in Korea shocked me at first, then I thought about the "Beliebers" and realised it's not as isolated within Korea as I initially thought.
That said, the restrictive-ness of living a life of a high-profile K-pop star/actor must get quite lonely. Seeing the big names like Lee Min Ho etc get mobbed everywhere he goes ( even while he's on a holiday with his family still needs a security detail)...while on 1 hand I would love for JCW to get alot bigger, I also don't want to see him live a life like that! Forbidden to date so as not to anger the fans? Eeeeesh!
I read somewhere previously that the agency he's with is a small one so I went and had a look at their website to verify it. While some others may have thoughts that it has prevented him from being as big-name a star as some of the other "Hallyu Gods", I actually think it's benefitted him in that he gets to follow his real passion (acting) without too many distractions.

I do think after Healer he has seen a rise in popularity some of the fancams from his last The Days performance showed a very large crowd. But it was also a known event (his last performance) but I do think he seemed a bit surprised by the amount of fans waiting for him outside.

yeah, well, he might go out in parted-hair-and-glasses disguise (like in the first script-reading meeting, lol, there are pics on DB) and no one will look at him twice, or wear careless clothes and disappear into any usual citizen, or go jogging in that outfit like in ep 13&14 - those caps really hide his face! :D
i wonder if people come to him because he's so good looking, or to praise him for his acting? i do acknowledge his looks, but i'd want to let him know it's the way he becomes these wonderful other people in dramas that i appreciate most!

Min Ja and Coffee Bay Ahjusshi - ship:
Actually so am I. When I first saw (without subs) her barging into the shop, looking so gorgeous, I thought that Ahjusshi was already eyeing her with interest. When I read the subs later about how she was probably a wife whose husband had been caught in an affair I was all over the floor, laughing. But whatever, it will be fun coupling the loners to make it a less lonely world. :)

@GB Speaking of which, how sad was Ahjumma's flashback (where she lost her child, and her belief in the cleanness of the system, and her marriage, all at once)?? I desperately want her to have a happy ending (she better not have anything happen to her damnit!)...and actually, I want CYS's Dad to have someone too. But unfortunately she hasn't had any interaction with him, so for now, Coffee Bay Ahjusshi looks like my best bet.
Plus, she seriously cleans up well! I loved the way she power-walked past Coffee Bay Ahjusshi like she owned the place, and was all like, "Don't you have a girl? Get a girl to come out and speak to me." and then was all, "Sit." when Young Shin came out to take her order. I love a woman who knows what she's doing and is in total command!

I have to agree Rainerust. When I watched the Ahjumma's backstory without subs, I couldn't figure out what was happening, just that it was something bad. When I realised what as being said, I found it so poignant and pathetic and am so sad for Ahjumma. At the same time, I'm very glad to see that despite being cynical, she's moved on and forward, has retained her extreme hacking abilities and is still able to care for others. :)

I started watching Healer because of the ridiculous comment counts. When they reached 1000 I was like, dang, must be good. I thought it started out fine, good but not 1000+ comments good. Then after a few episodes, and especially after the last couple, I'm hooked. I'm so invested in the characters, their lives, health and happiness. Especially happiness. Please Drama Gods, let everyone live happily ever after with all their dogs and cats and goldfish. I see JCW cry and I start to cry and worry for him. I totally messed up an experiment in lab today because my mind started wandering and worrying about Healer. When dramas start to interfere with Real Life, you know they are good. I want this agony to end so I can focus on my work but I don't want it to end ever. Such a dilemma.

I was a blubbering mess during this episode. Really tried to hold it in...but the tears started falling when YS craddled BS in her arms. His automatic response of of wanting to get closer...gaaah. They look so good together, like they just belong together, fit so well together (that was beautifully shot).
Then of course more tears at the very end. For someone who was "left behind" or "cast away" most of his life, that was probably the first time BS has heard someone wholeheartedly plead to let her stay next to him, to be in his life. Just the enormity of that one simple request...brings tears to my eyes even as I am typing right now.
The chemistry of PMY and JCW, is wow! And that ending kiss, total acceptance...DAEBAK! (still with tears in my eyes huhuhu).

And I have many things to think about so I deliberately re-focus attention on something else (that's what you do too). I am sure someone must have written this already, I haven't had a chance to read the 1000+ comments yet but for all her nonchalance and seeming indifference in the beginning we see that Ahjumma loves and cares for Jung Hoo as if he is her son. I found it very fitting that this was the episode her past was revealed. She was once a mother. It says a lot that she had to see Young Shin's eyes before she divulged Jung Hoo's secret location. When Young Shin met her she mistook her for Jung Hoo's mother again, which she denied strongly (which also says a lot) but she must have cared for the 20 year old Healer she inherited from the Teacher like her own son and unconsciously she must have put him in the place of the son she lost so tragically so young.

@ Moonbeam
This is something that is worth mentioning and thinking about.
There are so many poignant elements emerging throughout the show, and here's another one. Now we have Min Ja's story and find that she is a bereaved mother, probably also feeling guilt that she chose work over her child. Because she is not the sentimental type, she hides her care for Jung Hoo under matter-of-fact bluntness and insults, but she has always been keeping a tab on his well-being, given him advice, been the one to listen to him and been able to read his heart.
Seeing how hard it is for him to continue as Healer, she has now started to offer him alternatives as to how he can live his life (ie as PBS or not), and she passes him Teacher's advice as well to think about living a 'normal' life with family.
She has moved from being aloof and distant, to a person who is there for him as much as she can, while remaining incognito. She has taken direct action to save JH by calling YS and Moon Ho, and she has shown her self to YS. As the risks and his needs escalate, it will be a matter of time until she finally also shows herself to Jung Hoo. Until now he is not even sure if Min Ja is her name. I would love a moment, (and really hope this will be given to us), when Jung Ho and Min Ja finally meet and he can call her Min Ja Ahjumma and see her smile.

And yes,.... it is entirely possible that JH replaces her son in her affections and thoughts, but regardless, I believe she still would have cared for him specially and been determined to protect and save him. :)

I also loved how she protected Jung Hoo from the moment of Teacher's death. The video she sent him was edited. Cut right after his message to Jung Hoo. When asked by him she just brushed him off saying there was nothing else to see that was important. How much more would he be tortured if he witnessed that as well?
I am also looking forward to all kinds of unions and reunions and Ahjumma and Healer's is definitely one. Once the Teacher was gone 8 years go Ahjumma must have taken over in caring for him in her own way, as we seen in this episode to the point of checking on whether he eats.

While watching that scene again, I also realized how much of a risk it was for her to go out and basically reveal herself. Identifying herself as the person who had called before (to someone she didn't fully trust yet)... despite being the same person who had told SJH to keep as few contacts as possible.
I've always sensed that she really cared for him despite it appearing that she was only about business. But that kind of shocked me. She was willing to go that far to save SJH.

You are right of course. It's not just the Healer who needs to protect his identity. Detective Yoon is guessing the Healer must be working with a hacker and is even guessing the identity of that hacker. All he needs is proof and location. So she must really be panicked to reveal herself (although she gave neither name nor contact information to Young Shin, all she revealed was her face. Young Shin still doesn't even know what she is to him)

But isn't Det Yoon still keeping CYS under surveillance to catch Healer? Then Ahjumma is risking being confirmed in photos that she is around CYS, which will make Det Yoon connect her even more with Healer. Such a big risk for exposing Healer/JH but she was so worried about him that she was willing to risk herself and him to get CYS to find him. Love and risk.

@Moonbean @GB @blo - beautiful points, all of 'em!
I don't think anyone could entirely replace her lost son in her affections, but Jung Hoo comes pretty close!
Not sure I'd go so far as to say that she regretted her actions in choosing the stakeout over her dying son, but I agree, this would make her more determined not to lose another 'son' if she can do anything to prevent it. Also, she's probably feeling guilty over not being able to stop Teacher's death.
Going straight to Coffee Bay to meet Young Shin and putting it all on the line shows how far she'd go to protect JH (and honour Teacher's last words).
I found it sweet that Teacher talked about protecting both baby bears (to Moon Shik) - it was a nice way to include Young Shin - even though he only knew her when she was Ji Ahn. His love and loyalty to his friends really shone through.
Now Ahjumma is keeping the mission alive - I really hope nothing happens to her!

Yeah, I remember being a lot more impressed with the action in CH. But it's not the actor's fault. I believe JCW is doing his best. The first two episodes of Healer didn't exactly work its magic on me but by the 3rd episode, I was hooked! It was really unexpected and as you said, it did it so rapidly.

City Hunter was the first drama that I re-watched over and over. Loved LMH and Lee June Hyuk (prosecutor). Loved the action. And twisted adoptive Dad - Aargh. CH will always be in the top of my fav Kdramas list.
But JCW's acting, the chemistry between the leads, and the writing and directing in Healer all just push CH down the list for me.
I am holding out for 6 more episodes of great story. No weak ending like in CH. Don't want this awesome drama to go makjang or have a stupid ending that ruins the great ride! I want the elder to get brought down (possibly by KMS sacrificing himself in an act of redemption, probably dying to keep KMH and MH safe while exposing the elder and his gang of powerful cronies!). I want an epilogue like in My Love From A Star - kisses, snuggles in bed, a house (island retreat?)

It's only a short trip, but I might not be able to watch episode 15 until late Monday afternoon. :( For someone so obsessed with this drama that they wake up at 5am on Monday just to watch it live, THIS DOES NOT WORK.

As sad as it was Teacher's death served as a catalyst for the plot to move forward on many fronts.
- With this Moon Shik became a de facto murderer. He might have just hid the truth in his friends' murder cases, he might not have ordered the attempt on Young Shin's life but with this he crossed that threshold.
- Moon Shik's move lost him his brother forever. While Moon Ho was a biological brother to only Moon Shik that group of five friends (and later their kids) was Moon Ho's family. He grew up with them, cried in noona's arms when he needed. Young Shin and Jung Hoo's fathers and the Teacher were also brothers to him. Young Shin and Jung Hoo were his siblings he played with. Now all the brothers are dead and the siblings' life were threatened and it's a miracle that they are both alive. So, after 20 years of sharing Moon Shik's crime of knowing and doing nothing, Moon Ho finally gave up on is brother with the Teacher's death.
- I think this death started the process of bringing Jung Hoo and Moon Ho closer to each other. I don't think Jung Hoo will question Moon Ho's motives anymore and will start to trust him.
- The death also showed us how many people care for Jung Hoo how deeply. For all his I don't have friends and I don't want friends attitude once his life started collapsing around him Ahjumma, his sidekick, Moon Ho and Young Shin, an unlikely foursome who don't even really know each other, started combining forces to bring sense back into him. Their combined efforts aided by Myung Hee will bring Moon Shik down in the end.

- The most interesting change resulting from Teacher's death happened in Young Shin and Jung Hoo's relationship. I wondered how the faceoff between them will happen when Healer's identity is revealed openly. I couldn't have dreamed of it being this way in a million years. Once Bong Soo's identity as the Healer was confirmed covertly by Ahjumma and Young Shin went into his secret hideout all pretense between them of knowing but acting as not knowing was dropped.
With this, Young Shin finally saw the real faces of not one but two men. Because until her realization at the hospital the Healer and Bong Soo were two different man to her. Once she realized the truth she probably still had a problem reconciling these two very different men in one. Healer with the face of Bong Soo would act like who? She didn't think he would act like Bong Soo, as soon as the realization hit her first thought was that everything he said was a lie. In reality the only lies Bong Soo told her related to his identity and his work. He was more frank with her about his feelings towards her than the Healer who never said anything ever was. But Young Shin didn't know this. As for the Healer, she not only didn't know his face but how he acts either. He barely spoke to her. All she knew was that he protected her (for money or not?), he came when she called her, helped her and warned her.
The person she found in the secret hideout acted like Bong Soo when he was sick and thinking he was dreaming. He not only accepted but welcomed Young Shin's presence, didn't push her away. Acted in true Bong Soo fashion. But once he woke up and realized this was no dream he changed dramatically and started acting neither like Bong Soo nor the Healer. Thus Young Shin's question "Is this the real you?" Bong Soo always wanted her by his side, never pushed her away. The Healer didn't push her away, protected her and came when she needed or called him and usually escaped himself to protect his identity. This man whose name Young Shin didn't know acted like neither. He was distant, cold, unwelcoming. I am glad Young Shin didn't buy this front. After seeing the sweet Bong Soo and the principled, protective and compassionate Healer she did not accept this as his true face. Even without knowing his name nor the reason for his sorrow she understood his need and stood firm. She did not leave the man who choose to stay away to protect his loved ones alone.

Beautiful analysis Moonbeam. :)
I heartily agree with you that YS faced so many questions when she started to realize that PBS was not whom she thought he was, and that even knowing he was Healer gave her no information as to the person he really was.
It is amazing how despite that, she was astute enough in understanding what his real need was and that she could offer him precisely what he needed. :D

I've just been glancing through all the great analyses but this one really caught me. I've been so impressed with Chae Young Shin's handling of the situation ever since watching the episode, but the fact that she's still reconciling the identities of the two men in Jung Hoo's one face somehow hadn't registered fully until now...
She must have been so confused, and yet, in the end, she isn't. And it's not because she's an idiot, as Jung Hoo tries to suggest, but it's because despite all the deception (and who knew deception could be as adorable as Bong Sookie?!) and the fact that she barely knew Healer--in the end, she knows him, and she trusts her instincts. It seems so strange that she doesn't actually know the name "Jung Hoo" yet, because we all know that she knows him almost better than anyone else. Evidence: she wouldn't leave even when he gave her those scary looks. (His dark-angry-man-faces were making me tense just watching it.) But she's just like, dude, by the way, if you send me away, you're going to cry for your entire life. And you will never hurt me. Just trust me, I knows what I knows. The end. Kiss me.
Girl is awesome.

And CYS chooses to trust him even though she doesn't know his real identity. She trusts his character. Such a juxtaposition with her inability to trust anyone after her abandonment and abuse, yet choosing to trust after being loved by dad and the adoring ex-con uncles. Part of her healing is trusting Healer/PBS despite not knowing the full story. She loves him. All of him. Even the parts she doesn't know yet.
Such depth of characterization from this writer! Love it!

Ughh JCW made me cry...he so good at portraying any kind of emotion. Wow I'm so touch..
Talking bout the rating, sometime I kinda confused what kind of drama that knetz like to watch cuz we international fans like it but no the Korean tho. K2H also give great response from i-fans but it not good in rating (10%-14% during d airtime if I'm not mistaken). So I think Healer also get same result. It sad that to think that good drama did not get good result what it should be. Plus Punch is great drama too so it so tough to get high rating. But thankfully JCW seem got more attention (according to some fans here).

This was such an emotional, powerful episode. /bawls/
I was heartbroken seeing Jung Hoo's reaction after Teacher's death. Teacher was pretty much a father figure. He was a great man who taught Jung Hoo important skills instead of letting him go down a path of rage and bitterness. Their flashback scenes were adorable. T.T
Jung Hoo and Moon Ho were guys who didn't have many close friends. My wish is for both of them to be happy and safe in the end. Jung Hoo has Young Shin for support, but I wonder if Moon Ho will be able to move on from his guilt and after everything is resolved.. His conversation with Min Jae was eye-opening.
I couldn't take much of Jung Hoo's mean attempts to push Young Shin away. I'm glad it's over. He looked like he was in so much pain.
Oh, and I freaking loved it when Ahjumma got dressed up and marched into the cafe like a boss.

One of the important point of this episode was when Ajumma decides to come out of the shell just for the sake of Jung Hoo, Min Ja from the starting has been my favorite character and I started love her more from now on..
In one episode she told him that she would keep no contact with Jung Hoo if he would get arrested, though she seemed always concerned about him like knowing his father's incident or editing teacher's video but this time she crossed all boundaries just for him..
she could just call cys and give her the info to find JH but she decided to meet her, WHY????
because she wanted to see her eyes by her own eyes :)

Watching again, it really is great how Jung-hoo does get pushed right to the edge when Young-shin looks him right in the eye and tells him that he'll never let her get hurt. He's just coldly warned her off in every way he knows how, and she states unwavering faith in him.
JCW does a fantastic job of telegraphing that he is just barely hanging on to his original resolve. A lot of Kdrama actors go for an almost schizophrenic reading of this sort of scene, where they're cold until suddenly they make a 180 degree turn. Healer handled it so much better, with a slow erosion and JCW's visible struggle to keep shuffling her out the door.

I find it interesting how Ahjumma was trying to protect Jung Hoo by trying to separate him from Young Shin in the beginning versus how she played matchmaker in the end.
She thought he was taking unnecessary risks to be by her side and jeopardizing exposure of his identity. She wasn't wrong and the number of people who learned or suspected his identity increased at an alarming rate (though the death of Teacher dispersed the suspicions of many).
However, once Jung Hoo lost his mind with anger after recent events Ahjumma realized that the only thing, the only one who could stop him is Young Shin and the idea of a future life with her. The thing that eventually stopped him after he was threatened by his mother was the idea that Young Shin's mother lived in the house he was intending to storm in. Similarly, the Teacher gave him a dream of a marriage with the woman he loves, a dream that would be lost forever if he avenged his death through murder.
So Ahjumma knows how important Young Shin is to Jung Hoo, how much he loves her. But before revealing his secret location to her she wanted to make sure his feelings were reciprocated, that she cared equally deeply about him. It's one thing to have a crush on a mysterious guy who is almost like a superhero, quite another to love a real person. Once she saw how frantic Young Shin got with the idea of something happening to Bong Soo/Healer she felt she could leave Jung Hoo in her hands, this girl would take care of him.
Quite a reversal of position, isn't it?

I've written before about how our OTP had all these different layers of chemistry to their relationship. We would get a taste of how their chemistry as Young-shin and Jung-hoo was whenever JH would let himself come through in his conversations with her as Park Bong-soo. But there are certain elements to JH's personality that could never come out of PBS- his grumpiness (LOL).
I admit one of the things I was most looking forward to was seeing how Young-shin played off of grumpy Jung-hoo. I even imagined a scenario pretty much exactly like the one at the end of this episode, in which she's nursing him back to health and he's all reluctant to let her in etc. (I was expecting it way later though, so YAY for this episode taking amazingly unexpected strides).
Anyway, it's so interesting to already intensely feel the love between a couple, while also feeling the excitement of experiencing what kind of chemistry they have between them for the first time. I love it. I love how she completely sees past his 'scary', standoffish behavior, how she just knows, without knowing a real thing about him or why he's acting this way, that he cares for and needs her, and yet how she can't help but get thrown off by him at the same time. It's as if her reaction to him is filled all at once with equal parts confidence and uncertainty. And again, can I just say I love it?
I mean, the moment when he first starts talking to her as Jung-hoo shocked me because it was so strangely...hot. Like as if two strangers were meeting for the first time and yet already had this undeniable, sweet, warm connection with each other. And the way he looks at her when she's feeding him, as if he almost distrusts the fact that she's actually there doing such lovely things for him. And how she reacts to that look, as if she's trying to figure out who he is and what he's feeling. And how this, and how that...I could go on like that for ages. That is, if writing about it wasn't making me want to go watch that scene over and over and over.
I know a lot of people miss Park Bong-soo, and I'm certainly looking forward to him making a come-back for when they're at work, but I want Seo Jung-hoo to be known and loved. It's his turn and after she enveloped him in that hug and reduced our lonely night errand boy to the lost puppy he is? GAH. I just can't wait to see where they go from here.

When Jung Hoo was talking to the Teacher about his father's suicide he was saying he feared he might follow his footsteps if he realized there was nothing to live for. In the beginning of the series he really had nothing to live for but his dream of living in his island. He seemed to care for nothing else or noone. That was the only thing which made him keep going, trying to make the money to make the dream come true.
After teacher's death, with the guilt he was feeling that he dies because of him, instead of him, and the fear that he is endangering the lives of all his loved ones just by loving them and being in contact with them I think subconsciously and passively he was giving up on life. He was not eating, looked dehydrated with dry lips when Young Shin showed up (in fact he should have been in worse condition if that was what he was doing for the last 6 days and would need hospitalization).
I don't know how much of that discussion Ahjumma knew but she was checking whether he was eating or not and that fear made her come to Young Shin.

Yes, about Moon Ho, what you mention here also brought to mind that he is revealing a little more of himself or letting it be revealed to him, through the words of his ex, Min Jae. He is another lonely soul with no one to talk to, share ideas with or get advice from. Everything he has to decide and do himself and if he lacks the courage, there's no one to support or encourage him. It's sad that even knowing Min Jae has the right to be angry with him, he has no one else to turn to but her.
It is also good to know that she loved or still loves him and knows him, maybe better than he knows himself.
This is what is so good about this show, that we are given more and more background and understanding for many characters, and all they do/say and their background hangs together. :)

@skyofblue. It's the Pacific Coast Air Museum in Santa Rosa. I'm an aviation historian. My dad was a triple ace fighter pilot in WWII and Vietnam and I wrote a National Bestseller about him. I go to air shows all over the country and just got back from a trip to Los Angeles for discussions with a major Hollywood studio that wants to develop my book into a movie. I have a big, serious life and am around amazing people all the time. That's why it's so hysterical for me to be enveloped in this secret world so completely. Even my daughter, who is a costume designer in LA, thinks I'm nuts. She designs Cos play costumes for ComicCon and is the one who started my Asian entertainment craze many years ago. She is laughing at me. I'm trying to laugh at myself - but Healer has pushed me over into being a complete fanatic. I love it. It would be so fun to visit with you one of these days! Why am I suddenly awake at 2:14 and trolling DB to read the latest comments???? Yes, I've got it THAT bad!

W-w-wow! That's amazing! So, I may or may not have looked up your museum, and may or may not have tried to find the board of directors. *cough cough*. I'm not a creepy person, really. (lol)
I find it hilarious that such a professional woman is as addicted to kdrama as we are. Hah, one would never suspect! XD

@skyofblue - I know, right? The thing is that my mother was a movie star in the 1940's (Google Ella Raines) and I've always been around the entertainment scene in a very big way and my daughter is right in the middle of it. I'm a very young at heart past-middle-aged woman and have ALWAYS enjoyed the latest technology, music scene, art, theater - you name it. I can almost guarantee that I'm the only blond person of my age for probably 100 miles in every direction that sings out loud in my car to Big Bang's "Fantastic Baby" or Taeyang's "Eyes, Nose Lips". I LOVE the K-pop scene and am so impressed by how so many of our favorite actors are also superb singers. We just don't develop that kind of talent in the U.S. Yes - I have a secret life and nobody I know could possibly EVER guess what my alternate personality is. By the way, I'm not on the Board of Directors at the Museum, I'm the Director of Museum Operations. I'm their employee. We really should get together one of these days!

Woaaah. Unni, that is some life. Mine is mostly spent at home. I practice Professional Hermitism you know, and I take my job seriously. I could get arrested if I step outside for more than an hour, according to the Laws of Hermitism, and the medical records for Hermits has also listed that any hermit outside for too long can also suffer severe health damages. So, being the good law abiding, health conscious citizen I am, I keep myself indoors as much as possible.
It would be awesome to get together, all us Cali beanies. I wonder if we could coordinate some kind of meet-up someplace. Lol, just don't be shocked when you see me! I think I really am a dongsaeng to practically everyone on here, plus my cultural backgrounds.
As for the talent, I know right? I love how the people there have different talents as well, not just limited to one thing. I think most of all though, due to the culture there, their personalities are wonderful, compared to some celebrities in America. JCW is a shining example, as are the members of so many Kpop groups.

I'm very curious to know where Young shin said she is staying to Dad. Where does he think she is spending the night? Did she say Bong Sookie is sick and she will take cake of him? She was asking him a recipe on the phone so he must know she is taking care of somene.
And if they know she is with Bong Soo what do Dad and Ahjussi think about it? Are they still looking for who made her cry? What will they do to him when they discover?
Also, Young Shin said she'll leave the next morning if he still wants her to go. What if he doesn't? Will she stay? :p

Unfortunately I think you are right. Next day will be back to work. For those who don't want to see the last of Bong Sookie yet that is also his cover to work with Moon Ho so I think he will got to work and act like Bong Soo for a while yet. It will be interesting to see how Young Shin will treat him now in front of others (will she be able to act as well as Jung Hoo?). Also when will she learn that Moon Ho was onto his secret way before her? Will Bong Soo tell to him that she knows?
By the way, I am glad that he unplugged everything before. As much as I love Ahjumma I wouldn't want to hear her signature cackle while they are kissing or else....

If I dreamt of the show it would be a lot pervier than that but your subconscious must just be showing off your fear of typical drama cliches of ruining these kind of moments with phone calls.

I would like to think (and hope) this drama is much better than pulling something stupid like that.

So many emotional and wonderful scenes. ;___;
And seeing JH looking so lifeless broke my heart. It's so sad that Teacher died, which further increased his fear and reluctance to establish personal relationships.
And Ajumma's story was so poignant--she lost her son and her work was all for naught. But I'd like to think she sees JH as her own son, which is really sweet.
Didn't notice the backdrop of the kiss though (I was too absorbed watching the kiss itself ;D). Incredibly nice touch for both aesthetics and portraying his dream vs. his reality.
Thanks for the recap! Now to wait for the next episode, and no preview.. ;__;

LOL...it's definitely not because I kept opening tabs of dramabeans just to see if I could get them all. Totally not.
I love that one too! But my favorite is the one where he's wearing this fuzzy black sweater and bending over the DB logo :)

He was actually wearing a midnight blue sweater, but lol yeah a minor detail. Guess the filter I used made it look black. Love that picture of him too. So playful. <3

I have such tough luck. I've only chance upon 4 out of 8 so far. Hahaha.
There was this funny moment when my friend and I were surfing the net side by side (on separate PCs). She was curious as to what the heck was I reading (DB, what else? haha) so she checked it out herself. Alas, the moment DB loads on her end, a JCW banner shows up! I actually resisted the urge to scream "OMOOOO! THAT'S MY BANNER WITH MY HUSBAND RIGHT THERE AND HOW COME YOU GET TO SEE IT ON YOUR FIRST TRY AND I DON'T?!!!!"
In the end I settled for silent squeeing and she asked me why was I making such weird noises.
Me: "I have a massive crush on the guy in the header."
Friend: "Oh really? *looks at JCW more intently* He's cute."
(Inner) Me: "CUTE?! He is NOT just cute. He is phenomenally drop-dead gorgeous. Do I need to accompany you to the clinic to get your eyes checked, girl?!"
Me: (what I actually said): "Haha, yeah. I know right?"
Sorry this was a bit out of topic. Just wanted to share for the lulz.

Aaaaaaah, not the spoilers! Please do warn before you post them, I really, really, really did NOT want to come upon any spoiler for next week, wasn't even planning on seeing the preview. I'm fine with it this time, it's not too bad, it's a happy spoiler, but there may be others who are truly restraining, so you may want to give them a heads up. Just a reminder. :)

@fantasy - I swear, I wasn't. That's okay. :) I'm even more unlucky than you. For all the time I spend here in DB (I check periodically during the early morning, noon, afternoon, night, late night everyday) only 4 JCW headers have graced me with their presence. Lol.
