Three Musketeers: Episode 11

If there’s one perk to this whole once a week format, maybe it’s that we can watch the penultimate episode and get a whole seven days before having to face the… well, I won’t say it here. As far as this hour goes, it’s a gratifying watch for fans of Yoon-seo, Sohyeon, and Dal-hyang, even if the satisfaction of seeing them surmount longstanding obstacles means they’re just that much freer to face new ones. Gird your loins, folks—it’ll probably get worse before it gets better.

EPISODE 11: “A Kiss”

The governor of Anju is in for a rude awakening when he realizes that he’s put the crown prince in prison, and grovels before Min-seo by way of apology. “I am so sorry I didn’t recognize you, Your Highness!”

Sohyeon just smiles good-naturedly as he tells the governor to address him and not Min-seo, because he’s the crown prince. Ahaha. The governor STILL didn’t recognize him. I do love this running gag.

Because the governor is the one who sent the potentially damning letter regarding the whole Ingguldai/Dal-hyang issue to the king, he’s now scared out of his wits when Sohyeon corrects his mistaken assumption that Dal-hyang is alive.

And since Dal-hyang is on the way to the capital to tell the king just how incompetent the governor is, he better listen to Sohyeon carefully if he wants to save his position (and head).

After making sure that Ingguldai returned to Qing safely, the Three Musketeers return to the place Sohyeon claimed he was convalescing in, only to find out from Eunuch Kim that the king paid a visit and was incensed his son was nowhere to be found.

So Eunuch Kim gave King Injo the only excuse he would believe: that Sohyeon and his buddies had gone to the capital to feed their gambling addiction.

Seung-po is mortified because of how much trouble they got in the last time that excuse was used, but there’s not much they can do. In order to properly fool Injo, they have to go to a gambling den in Hanyang and be “caught” there.

I love how none of them are into it and practically fall asleep at the table until they hear royal guards approaching. Sohyeon has the good grace to act embarrassed and outraged at being caught red-handed, while the guard admonishes him for falling back into old habits. If only they knew.

The three of them are brought before King Injo for a proper talking-to, where Injo rants and raves about how worthless they are for gambling during their probationary punishment period.

They might be incorrigible, Injo argues, but there’s at least one man who received the same punishment they did and actually did something with himself…

…And in walks Dal-hyang, outfitted as a proper royal guard now instead of just an officer of the state. Nice. The boys look utterly shocked as Injo points to him, all, See? He actually did something with his life!”

Then we hear Dal-hyang narrating in voiceover that while the three musketeers were running around the country doing all the heavy lifting, he got showered with luck in the capital.

Dal-hyang continues narrating the events he wasn’t present for, starting with Kim Ja-jeom’s arrest following Sohyeon’s talk with the governor of Anju. They begged Ingguldai’s forgiveness for almost executing him (for a murder he didn’t commit, no less), and asked him to bear witness to Kim Ja-jeom’s dealings.

So a new report was written and sent to the king three days later detailing everything Kim Ja-jeom had done. Now that Kim’s claim that Ingguldai murdered Dal-hyang has been proven false by Dal-hyang being alive and well, Injo met with him in the palace.

Dal-hyang attested to how he survived underneath the floorboards, and how he overheard Kim Ja-jeom plotting to use his “death” to dethrone the princess.

Injo was so impressed by Dal-hyang’s story of survival that he promoted him to a senior officer, which leads us back to the present. The three musketeers are all shocked when Injo ushers Dal-hyang close enough to pat him on the back, and I gotta admit, their faces are pretty priceless.

It’s only when Injo lays on the praise and tells the boys to follow The Great Dal-hyang’s example that Sohyeon chimes in to suggest that maaaybe Dal-hyang didn’t accomplish everything alone—but to admit his part would make his gambling excuse moot, so he has to listen to his father tell him to be more like Dal-hyang. Hah.

Outside, the boys joke about Dal-hyang’s snazzy new position and the power that comes with it, which has Dal-hyang acting all bashful. Though he has something to report to Sohyeon, he’ll do it later… when he’s off work. They must remember when they had jobs, right?

It’s cute to see the boys complain to Sohyeon, who tells them that Dal-hyang’s words will be more highly regarded than his own right now—so if they want half a chance, they better take their complaints (and hopeful bribes) to Dal-hyang directly.

Since it’s Sohyeon’s first time back in the palace for over a month, he approaches Yoon-seo’s quarters with a happy smile. He remembers how she’d worried that she’d never return, and walks into her room all excited to greet her…

…Only to visibly deflate to learn she isn’t there, since she’s gone to the temple to pray for the queen’s death anniversary. He seems so happy when he’s told that she hasn’t left the palace gates quite yet, and instead of calling her to his quarters, he ventures outside to find her caravan himself.

Though he gets a little lost on the way, he eventually finds Yoon-seo saying her goodbyes on her way out. She’s so excited to see him she nearly loses her hairpiece while running over, and becomes even more aflutter when her husband asks her something as simple as, “Have you been well?”

They whisper like true co-conspirators as she shows him the Hairpin of Destiny that’s now safely on her head and tells him about the suspenseful way Dal-hyang delivered it to her.

Sohyeon’s face twitches just a little when she goes into too much detail about how cool Dal-hyang was for swooping in at that last moment, and cuts in that he’s the one who sent him to her. Yoon-seo blinks: “Yes, I already knew that.”

He doesn’t know what to say, and awkwardly wishes her a good trip. Yoon-seo follows when he walks away in embarrassment to ask if she did something wrong, and Sohyeon’s vague and confused reply is more like a “Maybe?” than she would’ve liked.

But it’s less of him placing blame on her and more his own confusion, because he doesn’t know what he’s feeling. Before Yoon-seo can finish asking him to clarify, Sohyeon swoops in for a kiss. Yes, you read that right.

He looks just as unsure as she does when he pulls away and tells her not to ask him what just happened, since he doesn’t know. His smile is short-lived as he turns to head on his way, leaving Yoon-seo looking happily dazed while touching her lips, as if to remember the feeling longer.

Sohyeon receives the report Dal-hyang wanted to give him via a letter, in which Dal-hyang informs him that he captured Mi-ryung. Rewind to the day of Princess Jeongmyeong’s party, where Yoon-seo had proven herself by showing up with the Hairpin Of Destiny.

The newest spy Mi-ryung placed in the court witnessed the events, but lied when making her report to Mi-ryung: According to her, the princess never even showed up to the party.

While Mi-ryung is left nearly hyperventilating, her messenger passes a solitary figure on her way out—it’s Dal-hyang, dressed in innocuous black in an attempt to track down Mi-ryung.

The emotion Mi-ryung feels is actually triumph, since she believed the messenger’s words and thinks she’s won over the haughty princess. But then Pan-swe, claiming to be an innocent messenger sent by a man with an eyepatch, gives her a letter from who she believes to be Kim Ja-jeom.

In it, Not Kim Ja-jeom tells her that the plan in Anju went off without a hitch, and that Sohyeon has agreed to take her as his wife. Overcome with something-like-but-not-necessarily-joy, Mi-ryung followed the instructions in the letter detailing where to meet Sohyeon. Of course, that’s just what Dal-hyang wanted her to think.

He deliberately led her outside the city so news would be slow to reach her, and reports exactly where she’s staying to the prince—but he won’t make a move without Sohyeon’s order.

Dressed like an unmarried girl from a noble house, Mi-ryung waits anxiously for days until Sohyeon arrives. She looks wounded yet hopeful as she asks him if he signed the marriage contract Kim Ja-jeom offered, and when he says yes, she at least has the decency to bow her head in pseudo-shame: “You’re disappointed in me, aren’t you? I know you are.”

She tells him that she wanted to keep the promise she made (to stay away from him) so badly, but that she suffered at Kim Ja-jeom’s hands and was forced to take his offer when he said he’d make her a princess.

When Sohyeon tells her that she still could’ve refused, she claims she tried, and did, but Kim Ja-jeom didn’t listen. She’s a victim too, she claims, and this is just how it happened.

“So… do you like this conclusion? No matter what the process was, the result is that you’d become the crown princess. Do you like it?” Instead of answering, she asks how he feels about it, only to leap to embrace him when he flippantly says, “Well, when I think about it, it won’t be too bad.”

That’s all the validation she needed apparently, since she starts acting all coy and cute as she talks like they’re already a couple. As she goes on and on about her dream future with him, Sohyeon’s expression remains unyielding and distant.

All he has to do is give her a few words here and there to bait her into spilling everything, including how she told Yoon-seo to kill herself rather than living to be disgraced and humiliated, because she’s just that nice.

“She doesn’t know about us,” Mi-ryung says in a baby voice, while tightening her arms around Sohyeon. “I told her that our bond can’t be severed so easily.”

Sohyeon finally pulls away, and tells Mi-ryung in a monotonous voice that he’s glad she didn’t leave the country like she had planned, because they wouldn’t have been able to meet again like this. Is she so oblivious to her crimes that she doesn’t see Sohyeon’s words for what they are?

Mi-ryung believes he’s taking her to the capital so they can be married, but before hopping into the palanquin, she stops to point out the irony of Eunuch Kim having to now serve the woman he once tried to kill. Someone doesn’t know how not to count their chickens before they’re hatched.

It’s almost sad to see how happy Mi-ryung is as she’s taken away in a palanquin, fully believing that Sohyeon will soon follow her to the palace. She has a vision of what she’d look like as the crown princess exiting her palanquin, but when the vision fades, she steps out of the palanquin…

…And into a prison. Eunuch Kim informs her that she’ll be interrogated soon, but Mi-ryung doesn’t seem to fully grasp what’s going on, at least not until Eunuch Kim tells her that it was the crown prince who put her here.

Mi-ryung still can’t believe it, because she still thinks Sohyeon signed that marriage contract… but that’s when Dal-hyang arrives to set her straight. Just the fact that he’s alive comes as a huge shock to her.

Dal-hyang has no trouble listing the crimes that put her here: her telling the princess to commit suicide, her drugging Ingguldai because she wanted him to kill Dal-hyang—the list goes on and on. But Mi-ryung can kiss any chance she never had at becoming princess goodbye.

The next person Dal-hyang gets to greet on their way to prison is Kim Ja-jeom, who’s also surprised to see Dal-hyang alive. Dal-hyang tells him that he’ll have Mi-ryung to keep him company, so they can have time to catch up before their impending torture interrogation session.

Mi-ryung calls Dal-hyang to ask—no, beg—for him to give her an audience with the crown prince. She knows this is all a big misunderstanding that can easily be cleared up if she could just talk to Sohyeon…

But when Dal-hyang informs her that Sohyeon has no intentions of seeing her ever again, Mi-ryung shouts her denial before reining herself in. “He can’t abandon me like this,” she says shakily. “We love each other.”

“Love?” Dal-hyang scoffs at her use of the word, as he tells her point blank that what she calls love is nothing but an obsession. Mi-ryung’s expression turns dark as she promises, “I don’t know how you survived, but I’ll kill you myself.”

Dal-hyang is the opposite of threatened, and dares her to do her worst. Mi-ryung changes tactics when he turns to leave, and begs pitifully for him to let her see Sohyeon just once before she dies.

It doesn’t work on Dal-hyang, who points out that the girl who’s trying to make him feel pity for her impending death just threatened to kill him. He doesn’t care what she does, but reminds her that he’ll be watching no matter what.

Dal-hyang leaves the prison feeling pretty pleased with himself, especially since tricking her into a prison cell saved him from another unfortunate meeting with one of her poisoned needles. He leaves Eunuch Kim to report what happened to Sohyeon, since he’s planned to meet his father, who came all the way to the capital to visit him.

After Sohyeon hears of Mi-ryung’s utter shock at being arrested with nary more than a “Good work” to Eunuch Kim, we find Dal-hyang eagerly riding home with an enormous grin on his face.

He and his father are so excited to see each other they can barely stick to formalities, but Dal-hyang insists on bowing to his father even though he can’t stop smiling.

It’s a joyous reunion of the highest sort, and if Dad thinks his son has moved up in the world because he now has a slave, he’s in for the shock of his life when Dal-hyang shows him his palace ID, equipped with his name and now-senior official rank.

Dad is so over the moon he loses the ability to speak for a while, and it’s adorable how proud Dal-hyang is to tell him all about his new position and how important he is now. Cue a bowathon between father and son.

Mi-ryung has a full-scale mental breakdown in prison, and spends the night whispering “We love each other, he’s waiting for me, I have to get out,” over and over again.

But the scullery maid sent to deliver food to her is in for a nasty surprise when she sees Mi-ryung hanging from the rafters. Eek.

While regaling his father with slightly-inflated tales of his bravery, Dal-hyang is interrupted with the news that Mi-ryung/Hyang-sun hung herself. The word is that she went insane, and Dal-hyang can’t help but think of her last desperate plea as he rides to the prison.

There, he finds out that she wasn’t dead when they cut her down, and has been transferred out for treatment. No sooner does Dal-hyang go to the makeshift clinic that a man runs out yelling that there’s been a murder—Mi-ryung killed the doctor and disappeared.

While the palace guards start scrambling to find Mi-ryung, Dal-hyang finds the doctor with Mi-ryung’s signature fatal needle sticking out of her neck. Only then do the prison guards discover that the knot was tied incorrectly from the start, proving that Mi-ryung had no intentions of dying from the start.

Sohyeon, unaware that there’s a situation in the palace due to Mi-ryung’s escape, finds himself unable to sleep that night. He takes a candle to visit Yoon-seo’s receiving room, content to just stare at the place where she’d normally sit.

I love how Eunuch Kim has to remind him that Yoon-seo will be back in a day, causing Sohyeon to sigh that tomorrow is so far away. “What have I been doing until now?” he asks himself. “I’ve wasted so much time.” Aww.

Meanwhile, Pan-swe receives a gift of alcohol from Seung-po, causing Dad to get all huffy and parent-like as he demands to know who this “friend” of his son’s is. Of course, he’s shocked into silence when Pan-swe tells him of Seung-po’s impressive lineage as well as his friendship with the crown prince.

Dal-hyang is the one to tell Eunuch Kim of Mi-ryung’s escape, because he’s worried she’ll go after Sohyeon. That worry is only exacerbated when he’s told that the crown prince went on an outing, and not even Eunuch Kim knows where he is.

After an interlude of prison commentary from Kim Ja-jeom, Dal-hyang stops by his house to retrieve his sword. He’s not expecting a surprise visit from Seung-po and Min-seo, who haven’t heard of Mi-ryung’s escape and came to party with Dal-hyang and Dad.

Dal-hyang’s eyes widen when he sees Seung-po already carrying his own jug of wine (which means he didn’t have one sent to Dad), as he thinks back to Mi-ryung’s threat to kill him.

Fearing the worst, Dal-hyang rushes to Dad’s room to find him slumped over the table. Oh no, is he dead? Dal-hyang is afraid of the answer as he edges forward, gently calling his father as he pulls him away from the table…

…But Dad is already gone. Dal-hyang can only hold his body and cry.

Yoon-seo finds herself unable to sleep that night when all her thoughts are of the kiss she and Sohyeon shared, but it all works out for the best when she’s led to a late night visitor: Sohyeon.

He’s dressed for hunting, but tells her it’s just an excuse before he pulls her in for a kiss. The look of shock on Yoon-seo’s face slowly changes as she gives herself over to the feeling, resulting in a gentle, lingering experience.

“Do you want to know why I’m like this?” Sohyeon asks after he pulls away. “I didn’t know yesterday, but I do now. I won’t tell you,” he adds. “I’d feel like a fool. I have to uphold my pride, you know.” With that, he smiles as he asks her to hurry up and come home tomorrow—he doesn’t want to stay alone in his rom anymore.

Yoon-seo can’t believe what she’s hearing, even though she’s filled with joy. Sohyeon can’t help but smile as he he leans in for another kiss: “Until tomorrow, good night.”

He looks back at her and smiles. She can’t help but do the same, and offers him a tiny wave to send him on his way.

But when Sohyeon prepares to mount his horse, he finds his quiver of arrows missing. No sooner does he realize something’s wrong that an arrow flies past his face…

…And straight into Yoon-seo.

COMMENTS

I swear, one of these days there better be a comedy where two characters who’ve just shared a lingering slo-mo smile turn away from each other, and win the lottery. Or adopt a puppy. Literally anything that isn’t disaster and mayhem would do, and would maybe help ease the tendency dramas have instilled in us to be only moderately happy at all times, because you’re just asking for it otherwise.

If all we’re supposed to feel for Mi-ryung is disdain, then these past few episodes have certainly accomplished that. The only thing that feels lacking with her is that she’s not pitiable enough to earn much empathy, nor is she so hateful that we can’t help but look forward to her downfall. She’s doing plenty of bad things, sure, but I can’t help but feel mostly ambivalent regarding her actions at this point. I don’t think even Mi-ryung is sure what Mi-ryung wants anymore.

Here’s the thing: it’s fine for her to be obsessed with Sohyeon, it’s fine for her to be a villain and murderess, and it’s even fine for her to have lost her mind—it’s just that it’s hard to relate to and/or understand an irrational person doing irrational things. Is the message that she’s weak-willed and blind whenever she’s not actively angry? Because I have a hard time buying into the fact that that the girl who believed she could force Sohyeon to marry her without any lingering doubts or suspicions could then fake her own hanging, kill a person, send poison to another, and arrange for the crown princess to be shot. And all in the same day, no less!

Poor Dal-hyang, though. The scenes with him and his father were too cute for words, literally, since we’ve all been that kid with our parents at one time or another. But Dal-hyang had something to legitimately be proud of, especially since he wasn’t just showing off his most impressive piece of macaroni noodle artwork, but the fact that he’s in a position of power that only the best and brightest can achieve. If nothing else, at least Dad died a proud parent. (*sob*)

Sohyeon’s development into personhood has been subtle over the course of the last few weeks, which made his realization that he loved his wife pretty darn endearing. Admittedly, I’m happier for Yoon-seo than I am for him, just because we’ve seen her struggle with her desire to love and be loved while he felt nothing—though I’d like to think that all of those moments contributed to his eventual emotional breakthrough. Here’s hoping that the world won’t be so cruel to take the love of his life away before he’s even gotten a chance to tell her so.

Even though I suspected dad was going to buy the farm, I have to admit there was a small part of me that hoped Dal-Hyang would cop on and run and destroy the wine vessel in the last minute. Alas! 'Twas not to be. So sad.

What was that, right at the end?

I keep worrying about the source material for this show... They changed a lot of things around and it used to be fun guessing who's who.

But that wine trick didn't kill D'Artagnan's dad in the novel (just a random character/acquaintance, I think). So now I'm worried because Yeon-soo's character may or may not actually die. And I don't want her to die! The poor thing. Just when Crown Prince started to love her back too!

*Book Spoiler?*

The wine killed D'Artagnan's love interest in the book which has always made me worry about the Princess. The princess though wasn't D'Artagnan's love interest, so wasn't sure how that would play out here. I guess they decided to use someone just as close.

The wine killed some random people, D´Artagnan´s father is only in the first chapter of the book, but his love interest has been killed by Milady herself at the end of the book, so ... I am really worried now about Yeon-soo!
Do hope there will be more, though, as they maybe (wishful thinking!) prepare for the 2nd series.

*** BOOK and POSSIBLE DRAMA SPOILER***

Ah! I forgot Constance was also poisoned. But the "your friend sent you this wine" trick was used in the 2nd novel and killed off a random character.

I forgot they're doing 3 seasons of this. Maybe each season will correspond to a volume of the novels?

Crown Princess Minhoe was the daughter of Minister Kang Seok-ki, which is the name of Yoon-seo's father in that letter she wrote to Dalhyang, so yes, it is Yoon-seo.

I'm not worried that the princess will die. She'll be near death enough that the Prince will be beside himself with all kinds of regret, which he has earned by the way he has treated her for 5 years!

I'm glad that he's finally done w his first love, who he finally understands is a thoroughly evil person. Why does it take so long tho, when he witnessed her pushing her helpless mistress into the well?

Why does she fake her own death, send poison to another, and try to kill the crown princess all in 1 day?
She is born twisted and thinks fast on her feet?

I still think he hasn't loved her for a long time, even since the very beginning. He just had a lot of guilt over her "death" and trust issues when it came to women and romantic relationships (which is bound to happen when your first experience in love ends with 1. witnessing your love push her mistress down a well and then 2. ordering your love to kill herself before you can even come to terms with the fact that she's a murderer). I think he was glad she was alive because he could finally let go of his guilt and I honestly believe that if she had peaced like she originally promised him, he would have still realized that he's in love with the Crown Princess, regardless of whether Mi-ryung did more evil things or not.

" If she had peaced like she originally promised him, he would have still realized that he’s in love with the Crown Princess, regardless of whether Mi-ryung did more evil things or not"- I completely agree with you. I also think it was just a matter of time before he realized his feelings for the Princess even if he didn't meet Mi-ryung ever again.

I think he said his final goodbye to Mi-ryung when he took the stab from her. That was his way of paying for ordering her death and with that sever the last attachment of guilt from his mind.
His refusal to fulfill Princess's wish and his letter asking her to give him a bit more time, all happened before he met Mi-ryung again. So I think it was the Princess who moved his heart and forced him to admit not all women are the same.

Exactly, I completely agree! Especially with the part about the Prince falling for the Princess even if Mi-ryung never came back. I think, even with his guilt, he still would have eventually fallen for her.

If I'm not mistaken though, he was actually stabbed by Mi-ryung (ep 6 or 7?) before the Princess voiced her wish etc. (ep 8), but I think the reason why he still pushed the princess away at that time was just because the confrontation with Mi-ryung was still all too fresh. He was already well on his way to realizing his feelings. :)

Thank you very much for the recap. I've been waiting for it ever since I watched this episode. It's past midnight in my country but I've been waiting and refreshing the page again and again to read the recap before I go to sleep.

For me, this episode was just a perfect mix of comedy, romance and suspense. Our OTP was completely adorable. I've lost count as to how many times I rewound their scenes together. The moments between Dal Hyang and his father almost brought tears to my eyes, while the faces of three musketeers watching DH take all the credit made me laugh out loud.

As for Mi-ryung, I think her twisted personality, over-ambition and unfortunate life has caused her to be mentally instable at least to some extent. I agree with you that at some point of her life, she got lost and drowned in her own complexity and now even she doesn't know what she wants anymore. I also think she is on the verge of breaking down and I, personally, believe that all the things she has done pretty plausible for her considering her mental hopelessness.
But I hope we will get a clear conclusion on the arc of Mi-ryung in the final episode of the season.

I agree about Mi-ryung. I mean, from having the only person she loved witness her murdering someone, to having that very person go on to order her death, to then going through all she did those 5 years...I mean, it's no wonder to me that she's completely lost it. She kinda hits a point this episode where she's finally forced to realize that she has become unworthy of the very thing she gave up her innocence for...if that makes any sense.

I think, before this, she couldn't let herself face that reality. The more guilty she became, the more she had to delude herself into thinking that his love for her was unconditional (no doubt, influenced by his "I miss you") and that she could once again kill to be the princess and he would eventually forgive her and love her anyway. And now, to finally have that completely wrenched away...to have that delusion shattered. For her, that's akin to losing everything. And with nothing to lose, I can certainly buy her acting this way.

I admit, though, I kinda wished they'd done things differently. Like, if she had let go of CP when she promised, then started looking out for her own interests and returned as an antagonist or something, it would have been cool. I still think the choices they made regarding her character made sense though and that taking her to this even darker point of no return is compelling to watch in it's own way. I guess I just miss finding her, the character, to be someone, well, more than the completely delusional, murderous woman she's become.

Woah...how did I write this much?

Yes, I'm with you. I think Mil Ryung's character makes sense and compelling. Since the beginning she seems to be one of those people who always blame outside forces other than herself. So when she was alone with the Prince and told him that she was a victim too, it was just like the way she believed she was *always* forced to kill others as a mean to survive. I can even buy why she was so oblivious in how dead-pan the Prince was when they were talking about their marriage. We tend to believe what we'd like to believe…so despite her intelligence (in a sick way), she was also very delusional.

"she’s finally forced to realize that she has become unworthy of the very thing she gave up her innocence for…"

I don't think she gave up her innocence to the CP....
But I don't believe that Hyang Sun really loved the CP. She "fell in love" with him because he was the CP and she fell in love with the idea that she, a slave, could end up being the queen of a Joseon. She did not plan to be attracted to him, and I'm sure she had feelings for him - who wouldn't when he's so good looking? But when he showed interest in her, as a young slave girl, she got carried away and thought that she loved him. However, I think it was the position that she loved more. Dal-hyang was right was he said that what she calls love, is an obsession. The idea of becoming royalty was her driving force - it was what made her 'come alive' again (remember, she was giving up on life until Kim Ja-jeom told her he could get her the position back.

I can understand her feelings to a certain extent. Her lot in life was very hard as a slave and after her 'death', it was even tougher as she didn't have the protection of the minister's family and was out on her own. But Hyang Sun's actions were not dictated by love but by ambition. If someone else was the crown prince and the position of princess was offered to her, I'm sure she would have accepted it and forsaken Sohyeon.

Oh, I definitely agree with you that it's about WAY more than love, but I wasn't going to get in to all of that. I also agree that her love isn't actual love, but this is why I kept stressing how delusional she is because, you're right, she is obsessed. And she certainly always had ambition, but I actually think that had she not been singled out by the prince and had she not fallen in love with him, she may have left the selection as planned. It was when the prince chose her that she really began to believe that she really deserved to be the princess. For me, up to this point, she wasn't wrong to desire those things. Where she went wrong, is when she began thinking herself MORE deserving than the real Mi-ryung. That, to me, is when she officially became unworthy.

So when I say she gave up her innocence in order to be with the CP, I mean that it was her desire to be with him (and yes, to have the chance to be Crown Princess) that drove her to becoming a murderer, thus becoming unworthy of everything she sought. She was guilty of being overambitious before, but I'm talking about innocence in terms of whether she's capable of murder or not, and I personally believe that had she not been in love with the CP she would not have done something that drastic, not even for her ambitions. But, then again, that's one of those things we can never really know...

Yes, and her innocence and integrity (and connection to the CP) are getting further and further away with each person she kills.

Her first murder may have been truly an impetuous crime passionel motivated by her feelings for the Prince, but that old excuse gets less convincing each time she "disposes" of an obstacle in her path.

This episode really highlighted her dual personality - she really seemed to believe in her "unbreakable attachment" with the Prince and forgot all about her revenge plans, but then turns goes back to killing innocent people left, right and centre.

I'm with you, gotta love the OTP. I rewatched their kiss scenes numerous times and they really did make me swoon. So sweet.

Dal hyang's gotta be blaming himself, first for pushing Miryung too hard in the prison - it's one thing to imprison someone, it's another thing to crow in their presence at their downfall (which is something I noticed that the Crown Prince didn't do, he still cares for Miryung in his way). I think Dalhyang backed her into a corner, made her realize she had no hope, and she forced herself to think of an out - whereby she could free herself.

Two, for not taking enough precautions - he knows how deadly she is and can be, when provoked (I was half afraid she was going to poison him with a needle when she gripped his arm in the jail cell) but he admitted in his narration he was too inexperienced and far too cocky; and three, for not considering that Miryung would go after the Crown Princess. He has to have guessed that she would be a target because not only did Miryung covet Yoon seo's position and wants to take her place, Yoon seo was once Dalhyang's love interest, and now with the Prince's affections turned towards his wife, she'd be making both men pay by striking out at the Crown Princess.

To be fair he was preoccupied by his father's murder. Things have gotten personal really quickly. I don't think the Crown Princess will die (because I love her so much LOL) because I don't think the writers would entirely want to rewrite history, though they may take artistic liberties at will.

Wonder how they are gonna wrap up this season with only one more episode to go. I hope they don't end it in a cliffhanger, that would just kill me....

I felt the same way about MR's imprisonment, DH's treatment of her, and her subsequent escape.
Of all ppl, DH should know what she is capable of, and so should have taken more precautions, like telling the soldiers Not to let their guard down no matter what. But then, his father was visiting, and he had to run home in a hurry. And more importantly, if he had had the foresight to forestall her escape, the C Princess wouldn't be shot, and we wouldn't get to see how distraught the CP would get, and wouldn't get a cliffhanger that'll have us clawing at the walls until the Season 2 rolls around!

lol~ you're replaying the kiss scenes for several times? Same goes for me..!! Haha, its just that the scene was so romantic, melting my heart all way down.. So sweet...and the BG sound really fit the scenario though..
Anyway, now I was really hoping the princess wouldn't die cause the prince only found the true love of his..
Somehow, I feel sad for Dal Hyang for his farther, Mi Ryung is way too much.
Long live the princess.. please.

Thanks HeadsNo2 for the recap. Why did the have to kill his dad? T_T I should have known better, with this writers they make everything seem fine then sh*t hits the fan in the last two episodes. They did it in Nine and in Queen... sorry I can't remember how to spell the rest. I have a feeling that she is going to survive, I hope. I was crying and then the ending of the preview made me laugh, I can't wait for the next episode. :)

Thanks!

Oy, this show.

I can't believe they killed pops! My favorite scene was when him and Dal Hyang were crying and bowing to each other! It was the most adorable thing, and I legit felt moved to tears, I'm not even kidding. How could they take him away?! I'm glad that he died in his happiest moments though, proud of his son :) But seriously, can't PDH catch a break? *SOB*

And GAH, Crown Prince, you do NOT turn to someone and smile like *that* when imminent danger lurks (granted, he didn't know...but still! Hasn't he ever seen City Hunter?!).

That aside, the Crown Princess is alive. She has to be. You know why? There is NO FREAKIN' WAY Hyang Sun gets to survive TWO hangings while Yoon Seo doesn't get to survive this!!! No, it's just not possible. She definitely won't give up so easily, not when she just won her prince's heart!

But really, this was a great episode and I had a huge smile on my face for most of it. I laughed so much during the scenes with Dal Hyang and King Injo! I have to applaud the actor of the King again because he really does a great job of being infuriating, yet pitiable in one moment, and then endearing and funny in the next. I can't help but like him despite all his weaknesses.

And I'd write my feelings on the developments between CP and CPss this episode...if I weren't already melting into a senseless puddle of goo just thinking about them LOL. Needless to say, I'm very very happy.

Can't wait for next week...except I can! Because I don't want this to be over :(

This was a great episode - it had everything!
Before watching it, I was wondering to myself - "What is left for the writers to throw at us? Kim Ja-Jeom has really been taken down this time and Hyang Sun's schemes with him have failed - the 3 musketeers and DH saved the Princess. I expected some development in Sohyeon and Yoon Seo's relationship...
But they gave us this episode! Fantastic! I was at the edge of my seat the whole time, whooping and fist- thumping at the TWO kisses (Frankly, I don't recall any drama that has 2 long kisses in any single episode), and end up crying! Two hours after watching it, I was still affected by it.

Gah! Show, are you trying to kill me? All the stress and suspense of this episode - there were times I was literally edging forward in my seat and biting my nails, which I can't remember doing in a looong time. I'm so glad we have two more seasons of this show.

I refuse to believe the Crown Princess is dead. Refuse. Any glimpses of coffins being lowered into the ground that I may or may not have seen in the previews must be for someone else - Dal-Hyang's father, maybe. Right? RIGHT?!

One thing that struck me (again) during this episode was how great all the characters are. All four leads are so compelling and watchable, even the ones I want to kill with a CGI-flying arrow (ahem, Mi-Ryung). And Lee Jin-Wook just killed me, in the best way possible, this episode. Although I'd always been intrigued by his character, this was the first time I really felt the emotional journey with him. His confusion, even with himself "Why did I make up stories to come see the Princess? Why am I jealous?," transitioning to his realization that he feels for her, was just so . . . lovely. Of course, when they kissed (for the second time) I started shrieking "No, no, now something bad is going to happen!" - clearly I've watched enough TV.

Special props to Yong Hwa. I never thought he was quite as bad an actor as everybody made him out to be, but he has blossomed so much in this role. Dal-Hyang's hubris-tinged sneering at Mi-Ryung in jail, his triumph and pride at his new position, his dawning horror and grief at what Mi-Ryung had done to his father - all of these emotions were beautifully and realistically conveyed by him. I can't wait to see the character of Dal-Hyang evolve over the coming seasons.

even though Park Dal Hyang is Yonghwa's most fab role this far, I actually like Heartstring so much.. despite its lack of decent scenario and yada yada. I simply love YH's guitar skill and his chemistry with Park Shin Hye in Heartstring. (and you know, he composes for the OST too!! It's really easy listening!) You can check this one out, if you have time.

Yep, special shout out to Heartstrings!

It may not have been a big stretch for their acting skills, but they really suited their roles well, and I loved Yong Hwa's self-composed songs and brilliant singing in it, especially his ballads! PSH's singing wasn't half bad either!

heartstrings brought me back to kdrama land, too. It's my favorite drama ever, for me, it has a nice story and nice chemistry between lee shin and gyu won.. "Because I miss you" sang by yong hwa which was an ost of the drama, brought me to it. Although it didn't receive much attention in korea, it actually bloomed in other countries like japan, thailand, taiwan...a lot of critics were said about the drama being bad, but i didn't even think it was bad when i was watching it, me and the whole bunch of my classmates loved it, we watched it together during vacant time n school...we were even scolded by our teacher bcoz we were so noisy while watching it..

I first discovered Jung Yong-Hwa the musician in Heartstrings. The music of JYH and some of the OST's were the best things about Heartstrings. Absolutely loved watching Yong-Hwa's guitar riffs and his version of Carmen Fantasy.

Check out [Full Album] Heartstrings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW8fqi6llJE

You've Fallen For Me
Because I Miss You

Carmen Fantasy

I liked Heartstrings and agree that too often it gets a bad rap. Some of the negativity is undeserved.

Of course, I went in watching with the mindset to enjoy it for what it actually was - a decent run of the mill musically inclined drama never pretending to be anything but oriented/geared toward youth/young adults. So maybe that helped.

I agree! I can't wait to see how he acts now that Mi-Ryung tried to kill Yoon-Seo just as he's realizing his feelings for her. He is going to be sooo angry (in a really sexy way). Ooh!

Even when I didn't like the character of Sohyeon, one thing I always appreciated was how LJW managed to convey so much emotion with minimal movement or dialogue. I don't know if I'm expressing myself well, but he has this kinetic energy he generates even in quiet. Somehow it's even more effective *because* he's not yelling or making exaggerated faces.

For example, in this episode, when he went to see Mi-Ryung and she was hugging him, and she couldn't see his face. She was gleefully crowing about all her plans, and she gets to the part where she tried to get to get the Crown Princess to kill herself. She's basically bragging about it! And his face was getting darker during the whole story, but when she reaches that part -I don't have the words to describe it properly, since I'm not a pro like the recappers at DB, but it was almost as if, simultaneously, his face froze but was shooting out flames from his eyes at the same time. It was seriously the scariest thing I've seen on TV in a long time - 100x more frightening than fight scenes with guns and swords. I don't even like Mi-Ryung, but when I saw that face I wanted to shout "Run, Mi-Ryung. Run like the wind!"

I am so hating our villains right now. Evil Old guy for the attempted murder of Crown Princess and Mi Ryung's murder of Dad. This was one of the best revenges I've ever seen in a kdrama. Soooooooooo good! But I knew it wouldn't laugh. I didn't expect the double whammy badness at the end of the episode. I was so happy for our lovers. Now I'm just so worried. But she didn't die in real life did she? So... not sure what all that burial was about. I am so sad that Dad died. He was so happy for his son and they were ust sooooooooo cute together. SO MANY FEELS FROM THIS EPISODE.

I was lauging and smiling so hard at the beginning. Very proud of Dal Hyang. He looked great in his guard uniform.

Seeing Dal Hyang's dad being so genuinely ecstatic about his son's accomplishments was a beautiful thing. His very first visit to his son and then he died. His sudden death was just heartbreaking. Now I wonder how his mother is going to cope... She's all alone back in their hometown.

Crown Prince's growing affection and realization of love towards the Princess was wonderful to see. So darn cute! He looked insanely handsome in his "hunting" headband and gear.

But I knew Mi Ryung was lurking nearby in the final scene. Ugh. The location of the Princess's chest/stomach wound worries me. She can't be dead, right? I think the coffin in the preview belongs to PDH's dad. T_T

Now that Mi Ryung has escaped, I think the evil minister is gonna be let free or he'll find a way to get out due to lack of witnesses or evidence.

Ha and to think I started this episode thinking it would be all filler. I'm so proud of the Prince this week (who was looking mighty fine in that blue hanbok and again at the end), not just because he finally realized he fell in love with Yeon-soo, but also because he finally talks TO her and not in circles AROUND her. Aside: Can Lee Jin Wook rock a little scruff next season? Since you, know, we have to show how he's matured and such? (HA who am I kidding? We all know how great he looks with facial hair.)

Dal-hyang is getting both smarter and more...er human? Case in point: both in his intelligence to capture Mi Ryung and his trolling. Both show growth. Keep it up.

Yeon-soo won't die, the box was probably his dad. Plus its only season one. I don't say that to be blase though; I am in her corner. As much as the impeding doom concerned me, I was happy she finally got a little lovin', with the promise of more no less. I was surprised how calm she seemed about it cause I know I was on the floor haha.

Tbh, while I was sad for dad, I wasn't surprised. It was too much happy for excrement not to be hitting the rotation devise soon.

It was so good, I didn't even miss Ingguldai! Excited for next week!

I, too, was also a little surprised by how calm the Crown Princess seemed at his sudden change, but I think she was probably just in a complete daze. I'm sure we'll get to see her more flustered reaction to his drastic change in behavior now that her husband is so bent on "not wasting time" (let's be real, we all know what this means LOL). Seriously, talk about a complete 180.

The character chart shows that the Crown Princess is taking the place of Queen Anne from the novel. Queen Anne does not get killed, so I expect the Crown Princess to be just fine at the end of the story. In the novel the person that d'Artagnan was in love with at first was Constance. She got poisoned at the end of the story. But nobody on the character chart is called Constance. The crown Prince got injured already, so I guess it is the Crown Princess' turn to get injured also.

PDH and his dad... so cute , so much chemistry (this boy has chemistry with EVERYONE), the whole scene just felt so genuine and sweet! while everyone else is excited about the kiss scene, the scene between PDH and his dad was my absolute favourite in this episode.... and sadly we'll not be seeing him anymore :(((((((

The scene where CP said he doesn't know why he couldn't sleep and looking for the CPs late at night.. i immediately thought, come on you are just horny. LOL!

I'm so happy when i see him on scene again but than my heart starts to break when I see a lady bring alcohol to him which I know it from MR and I know later he will die.
Why him??? He took two months to come here and can spend not even one night yet with his son. But a least he gone while he is so happy and pound of his son. I just hope DH will not anymore of his lover.

And I need to say I don't see Jung Yong Hwa in this drama I see only Park Dal Hyang. Yong Hwa is doing the great job and he nail the role of PDH. I've loved this PD since Byulsoongeom (별순검) 1 with Ryu Seungryong as he directs the typical Joseon Mr. Darcy-like 'so much feels in the inside + repress/repress/crack a wee bit on the outside' so well. And of course handsome crown prince in lovely hanbok *swoon*

I love the costumes in this drama: they are gorgeous. I love the Princess' hanbok during the second kiss scene, and the Prince could do no wrong in anything; he looks especially dashing in that hunting garb (anyone thinks that he looks like Joo Jin-mo in that?). I'm just hoping that the injury to the Princess strengthens his love for her and they'll have their baby-making session soon (although I think they don't have time to do that seeing that war is fast approaching).

This episode was going back and forth between tragedy and romance in the last 15 minutes, and I think it adds suspense, because I was left guessing who will be Hyang-sun's target (my worry shifted from Dal-hyang to Dal-hyang's dad to the Crown Prince and finally to the Crown Princess). How like Nine's writer to give viewers moments of comedy and happiness, and end the episode with a perilous situation. I really, really hope that the writer will take creative liberties instead of following history, so while I look forward to next seasons of 삼총사, I also dread the ultimate fate that will befall our Crown Prince and Princess.

War next week! Thanks for the recap HeadsNo2! :)

This has to be my favorite episode. I've re-watched the ending scene between the the CP and CPss so many times. They are currently my favorite OTP. I can't wait for the next episode, which is, sadly, the last ep for this season.

AAaargh!!! Just as I was saying to myself that at least the CPss was at the temple and safely away from the palace, and how nice that the CP goes to see her where they can have some private, alone time WHERE IT IS SAFE... T.H.A.T. had to happen!!!

I thought that the 'bad things' that were sure to follow Mi Ryung's escape would take place next episode ie bad thing happens to CPss so the CP would not get to see her the next day as planned,... but for it to happen that very night!!!! Not Fair!

(OK rave over for now...)

Just a point of interest: I am amazed at the speed with which so many things were accomplished. Without cell phones or fast cars, Mi Ryung was able to know within minutes where the Prince was off to, to arrive early enough to notice his unattended horse, to find a hidden, high enough vantage point from which to aim and to shoot an arrow spot on. Not to mention that she also had time to buy wine and poison and have it delivered. She must either be very athletic or very rich (or both) with willing murderous minions at her beck and call.

I hope we get to see who shot the arrow next week.

BTW, anyone wants to bet that next week's last episode is also going to end on a cliff hanger?

And did she go back to her prison cell first to get her shoes? Now that impresses me.

Mi Ryung is officially off her rocker. How can she still think the Prince would have her on those terms?! Clearly, she missed the look on Sohyeon's face that first time, after she pushed the real MR down the well.

I was idly wondering how Eunuch Kim has been spared from her killing spree, since she knows he was involved with the Prince's order to commit suicide... In any event, if she's still hung up on marrying Soyeon - pardon the pun - it obviously doesn't bother her that much anymore! As Dal Hyang said, it's obsession (and ambition), not love. Honestly, she has no clear political or emotional motivation/justifications for her actions - a very wishy washy villain!

Loooved the interlude between Yoon-seo and Sohyeon! Can we get some more cute jealousy hijinks involving the Prince, Dalhyang and the Princess, please? Cos she is not gonna die. Right, show?

damn.....I hate the ending of this episode. Please give us a happy ending! Gotta say though that this was a superb episode with a rollercoaster of emotions involved from feeling amused by Dal Hyang's rise, feeling relieved that the Prince finally feels something for the princess, then fear that Mi Ryung will do something stupid...

Have all the main actors signed on for two more seasons? If they did follow the books, they could justify changing the entire cast since the next book happens 20 years later. They do still have plenty of material from the first book to cover though, so I would think they wouldn't do a time jump yet...and I don't know if a 20 year jump fits into the Korean history part...

The production team said they would work with the same cast for the three scenes. And there's a rumor saying that Yonghwa and Jinwook are already confirmed for Season 2. (AGAIN It's just a rumor, still not confirmed). The filming of Season 2 will kick off in January 2015.

I'm 100% sure CPss won't die since she had to give CP 3 Princes according to history. But it's also bad that nothing will happen to Minister KJJ either since he would wreck havoc till the next King according to history. As in the preview, the boys will get into trouble because of him urgh....
Well, focus on the happy note then. I love the clever way the writer provides the laugh in this episode. So funny to see the CP plays card in prison like a bum but his young guard sits elegantly apart. I'd make the same mistake for sure if I don't know better :D It's so funny that the monk-like youngest was forced to gamble for the CP's shake because the three have to come as one package to make the king believe awww.. I laughed so much to see the three incredible faces when the king highly praised DH, and of course the always-hide-his-jealous CP couldn't help and gave out a tiny hint, "maybbeee he got a little help.." LOL! Love the way the hidden comic is written in the king character who I least expected to provide LOL moment. Love the courtyard convos when the boys complain about the unfair treatment but they all smile proudly at DH, just show me how strong their bromance is. I also love how they portrayed the CP like a mischievous schoolboy falling in love for the first time, so cute and so swoony.

Watching Sohyeon be jealous is one of the best parts of this series. There's something about how Lee Jin-wook totally looks like a grown man but has the mischief of a young boy, that is totally swoon-worthy (and that second kiss, oooof)

In honor of the Father/Son relationship Park Dal-Hyang shared with his Father:

"I love my son and am proud of my son." ~Robert H. Schuller

"I may not be perfect. But when I look at my children, I know I got something in my life perfectly right." ~Author Unknown

"There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots. The other is wings." ~Hodding Carter, Jr.

"When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry." ~William Shakespeare

"Your son will hold your hand for only a little while. But he will hold your heart for a lifetime! If you have a son that makes your life worth living by just being around him & you're proud of your son." ~Author Unknown

*sob* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Poor Dal-hyang's dad, I almost cried seeing how proud he was of his son, it was one of the most touching scenes in the early eps when the news of Dal-hyang's appointment went home.

And oh no, my royal OTP! I really hope we don't get a dead Sohyeon as the first episode indicated, but to kill Yoon-seo.....it was one of the most gratifyingly developed relationships in the series, watching them go from him staying in troll mode and not allowing or believing himself capable of loving her and her believing he didn't care for her at all, to this. And the preview for next ep.....my heart can't take it!

Questions:
Is Yoon Seo her real name or is it Minhoe, since that's what Wiki listed? I've seen Minhoe, Yoon Seo and Kang Bin listed, so what's correct?

So good to see LJW's lips back in action.
IDK if it is the director, or him, but he has this whole screen kiss down like nobody else...except, maybe Ji Hyun Woo, pretending Trot Lovers didn't happen.

That's what I was thinking! I did even know LJW could kiss like that until Nine. Then I became his fangirl forever.
