Okay.. I’m an Arab, was looking forward to watching Man Who Dies to Live, haven’t got the time to watch it yet, with this post I’m not sure what to expect.. mind giving me some spoilers?!
They had scenes where girls wear bikinis and hijabs. I mean, I don’t mind if they’re just wearing bikinis since not all Arabs are Muslims, but having both that combination, I think it’s kinda insulting. And they also made a scene where the King of that country asked Choi Min Soo (idk his character’s name) to marry one of the princesses. Again, the princesses wear hijab with sexy clothes. And they just sat there quietly, so it gives the sentiment of arranged marriage, but in a force way where women have no say in whom she’ll be married to.
Honestly, I’m not even surprised of their level of ignorance, this is not the first time where they portrayed us in such an insulting way! Like you said, not all Arabs are Muslims, and not all Arab Muslims are Hijabis but having them wear bikinis and hijab? that is just plain stupid! And what about the princesses, what era is this? So frustrating!
It’s very frustrating. If they don’t know about the culture, then don’t think of doing it. I know the whole plot of the drama is about a man who’s been living in foreign country comes back to Korea to find his daughter. But if they’re not culturally aware of Arabs culture, it’s either they do research or just choose other culture that they’re well-educated in.
I was also surprised with that scene in K2 as well. It’s one of the reasons why I don’t consider K2 as my fav drama.
Yes, I understand that we are different, the cultures, the religions, everything is different, you can’t get everything right, there’s definitely going to be some mistakes, but not to this degrading extent!
I did not watch The K2 but that scene was everywhere, everyone was talking about it, couldn’t not see it and I was shocked, I still don’t understand how and why?!
@azzo1 yes, you’re right, they don’t have to be an expert on Arab culture, minor mistakes can be tolerable, but this kind of mistake? I think it’s a huge insult. I also may not be an expert in Arab culture because I’m not Arab, but I took two Arab courses in my college days to understand a bit on Arab culture. C’mon Korean PD, writer & producer, it’s not that to learn a bit more on other people’s culture.
Wow, this is some new level of ignorance. Stuff like this frustrates me to no end and makes my blood boil.
I’m not an Arab, but I can relate to this, as they constantly do the same thing with black culture.
I don’t understand what their goal is exactly, as I’m pretty sure stuff like this has happened before and people have called it out, yet it keeps on repeating.
It’s as you guys said above, if you’re not culturally aware, do some research and do it right or don’t do it AT ALL.
I don’t understand how they can take things that are of cultural significance to other people so lightly. *fuming*
Things like this get me frustrated with Korean entertainment (music or dramas). They know full well and they are pushing for Hallyu yet they don’t consider things like these. I’m not Arab or Black, but it’s so frustrating when you read/hear “Sorry we dont know or we are not aware of” when they are called out for cultural misappropriations.
I am fully aware that they have a different culture during my first forays into Korean dramas & music but can’t they at least put some effort into learning about other cultures especially if they’ll use it in their scripts or what not.
Sorry for the rant. Couldn’t help myself cause of this new misappropriation.
Nothing to be sorry about. I also rant about this whole thing here. I also think it’s a matter of respect. If you want to put someone’s culture in your entertainment industry, it’s either you do it right, or don’t do it at all.
These are just so wrong in so many levels. Don’t tell me you had so many people in your production team, and no one seems to take an initiative to learn Arab & Muslim culture. *smh*
Im not arab nor a muslim but I’ve been living in the middle east all my life. It makes me cringe to see scenes like these. A little bit of culture sensitivity and a little bit of research would’ve gone a long way. *smh*
I am neither an Arab, Muslim nor Hijabi but this image irritates me to no end! Not gonna watch the show either! Korean shows really need to learn about other countries and/or cultures if they are gonna use that in their story-line.
I hated those fake Indian guru scenes in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, but this one just infuriates me!
I’m a Muslim hijabi and I went hell no! when I saw these girls. And all the other things going around like the women curtseying when he walked past. Muslim women don’t curtsey and it’s not Arab culture either for women to curtsey. I feel like the writers just decided on the most out-there thing they could imagine Muslims and/or Arabs being and filled the show up with all kinds of stupid stereotypes. I was really offended and I kinda knew this would happen.
I have lost my interest to continue watching this drama. I know those scenes are just in episode 1, but I can’t really tolerate with ignorance. Plus, the humor is not that funny either. Shin Sung Rok is playing a cheating husband too. So I’m out!
Wow this is so ridiculous and offensive! Wasn’t planning on watching this drama, and really have no reason to now!
Which idiot even came up with portraying them like this? And no one bothered to say this isn’t right?
This is ignorance, laziness and poor writing combined that shows no understanding of the culture!
It’s like they want to show women in bikinis, but wait, let’s make it more Arab and put hijab on their heads. It’s just stupid. I think we both got nothing to lose by not watching this drama.
This is way too much.. I skipped the beginning of this drama because I don’t think i’ll miss anything big. This is not the first time. I remember in K2 there was a kissing scene between Ji Chang Wook and Rania (an Arab girl which is a Muslim too) and that girl clearly wears hijab.
There’s also an issue with main poster with this drama, it seems like they put Muslim’s holy book (Quran) but it is in inappropriate position. I just saw it, now I feel so conflicted. I looked forward to this drama but they disappointed us from the very beginning. Regardless any cultures or religions, they should do a research. Not every matter can be taken as a joke.
Ignorance is not an excuse. We are living in the world, where we can get everything at fingertips. If they are so lazy to do a research, never ever try to touch others’ cultures.
Yup, I remember clearly those scenes in K2. It seems like they really don’t know why Muslim women wear hijab. Yes, it’s true that hijabis will cover herself from guys who are not blood-related to them before marriage and I was shocked when she took off her hijab right after K2 said that he’d marry her, and then kissed? It’s really stupid.
If this drama really wants to do a backstory of the character living in Arab country, the production team really should learn more about the culture. They should’ve learned from K2’s production team’s mistake. And I just realized about the poster! I didn’t catch it before. Oh wow, now I’m completely speechless because it’s a holy Quran. Anyway, I’ve decided not to continue watching this drama anymore and I don’t think I’ll be missing out much.

I know! If you’re not going to put any effort to learn about the culture then just don’t use it!
I hated those scenes, too! He was a monk with a Muslim name, like what?!

OMG that fake Indian guru scenes. I skipped on those scenes because it’s so irrelevant and so unnecessary. 🙄

So I’m out!

I’m not a Muslim and not a Arab but felt uncomfortable watching these scenes.

I think we both got nothing to lose by not watching this drama.

even so, a little sensitivity to another culture would have been nice.

How insensitive. The monk in SWDBS was bad enough but this is terrible. Thanks for letting us know @hannahmustafa
