My Golden Life promises refreshing cliche-reversals

The first teaser for upcoming weekend series My Golden Life has just been released, and it definitely has that upbeat, warm fuzzy vibe that I love in family dramas. And yes, Shin Hye-sun (Forest of Secrets) is coming back to family dramas! She was so relatable and cute in Five Kids that I want her in a similar role every time I see her on television.

The teaser’s supposed to show how Shin Hye-sun’s character has the chance of overcoming her impoverished background through a false identity, but due to a series of misfortunes, she ends up worse off than before and learns to deal with the obstacles that follow.

In the teaser, the drama promises to gives us a reversal of the commonplace makjang weekenders we see so often in dramaland. It starts with this question to the viewers: “You’ve seen these types of scenes before, right?”

Then, the teaser goes through a checklist of familiar setups we see all the time in family dramas:

  • Birth secrets.
  • A handsome department head. Cue Park Shi-hoo’s (Neighborhood Hero) entrance, looking like the stereotypical charismatic business leader, which according to his character synopsis, he is.
  • A intelligent, hard-working Candy-type heroine. Shin Hye-sun is shown running late for work, juggling coffee, and somehow landing in a police station all scratched up.
  • The love triangle we can’t do without. Enter Lee Tae-hwan (Father, I’ll Take Care of You), who plays Shin Hye-sun’s childhood best friend, brightly smiling at her with puppy-dog eyes.
  • A loving, large multigenerational family. That’s Shin Hye-sun, her three siblings, and their father. Chun Ho-jin (Man to Man) plays her father, while Lee Tae-sung (Mom, I Summon You, Gold), Seo Eun-soo (Duel), and Shin Hyun-soo (Ruler—Master of the Mask) play her siblings.

Then the chryon asks: “Is this all?” An emphatic “No! No! No!” reply flashes, and the teaser explains that there’ll be no frustrating elements in this “refreshing” new drama. With a smile, Shin Hye-sun ends the teaser by saying, “Bingo!”

I’m pretty sure that Park Shi-hoo has first billing on this drama, but I’m experiencing second lead syndrome already after seeing Lee Tae-hwan’s adorableness again. KBS family drama My Golden Life will air starting September 2, following the end of Father Is Strange.

I usually resist family dramas for about 10 episodes until people start squeeing about them but in this case... may be a must-watch from the beginning just for my cutey bias SHS.

Ugh! I know! I really like the teaser. And I like this writer, So Hyun Kyung, too. She wrote 49 Days, Two Weeks, and Twenty Again. Also My Daughter Seo Young, which I heard was really good.

And this one's got the adorabe Lee Tae Hwan in it, too!

I so agree. Shin Hye is great as a neighbourhood sweet girl but PSH is a big NO-NO. I hope the OTP is Lee Tae Hwan and not PSH.

Park Shi-hoo always gets the girl, even when he is supposed to be the second lead...

I feel like its only fair that he be doomed to an eternity of the second lead getting the girl now that he's still getting leading roles after his scandal.

Lee Tae-hwan for the win!

Love the trope checklist! It is concise and on point for a preview article to let the viewers know what we are signing up for.

Except with a list of existing tropes by definition leaves almost no room for surprises.

Wasn't interested before but the cliche checklist definitely got me. I love the writer's confidence lol

I'll give the ole 1 to 3 episode try and go from there. I have no idea who Park Shi-hoo is so I guess I'll be going in blind. I would say though, it would have been better if they didn't market it as a reversal on the hackneyed tropes we have come of love and hate. If they fall flat on their face trying for the reversal, it might end up that much worse. Regardless, fighting!

I don't know who Park Shi-Soo is before, but hearing from all those comments by Beanies it's difficult for me to watch anything he is in.

But Shin Hye-sun oh Shin Hye-sun! She just so caught my attention in FoS. A good actress, a rising star, a very charming one.

I'm in a dilemma whether to watch it or not to watch it...

Just to clarify - PSH was not convicted of anything. The accuser dropped the charges. I'm not saying he's innocent but you need to know that this is conviction in the court of public opinion without evidence.

As I was reading I was ? Shin Hye-sun then uhhh ? Park Shi-hoo then ? Lee Tae-hwan then ?Father is Strange has 1 more week past this coming weekend which I thought it would end. Unless I got excited for nothing ? and it ends at 50 episodes. Now I don't even recall the name of the drama in this article but will I actually watch it? Depends if Javabeans con me into ANOTHER weekend drama with those darn "team dramabeans: what we're watching" posts!!

If I'm not mistaken, I think Father Is Strange got extended to 52 episodes.

With that teaser ... I'm IN! ? ? What a witty way to grab your attention ... using great copy, motion graphics, typography, promising actors (Shin Hye-sun and Lee Tae-hwan) & a perfect timing ... ?

Though I'll be sad to see "Father is Strange" go ? ... I'm excited for this one! ?

So I guess UEE is out then? Le sigh. Really looking forward to seeing UEE in a normal family drama. (Guess she chose Manhole over this, ughh). I didn't know that Shin Hye-sun is main star material. I've only seen her as a supporting cast in Legend of the Blue Sea, She was Pretty, etc. All which seems pretty forgettable and typecasted. That said, I will be tuning in to see how this turns out. Haven't seen Park Shi Hoo since Princess Man.

I'd actually say that LotBS and She Was Pretty had her most similar characters. Also her most shallow ones (though she actually really charmed me in LotBS).

She's played pretty diverse side-characters if you compare those roles to her characters in Oh My Ghostess and High School King of Savvy. Being a part of the most popular loveline on Five Kids probably played a huge role in her casting for this. That said, for me, it's her role in Forest of Secrets that took her to the next level.

I sometimes have trouble transitioning to appreciate/love a heroine whose actress is known so well (in my brain) as an antagonist from other projects. It shouldn't happen, but it does! When the actress does a fab job and creates a whole new character, I can switch and not look back. Lee Sung Kyung did this beautifully! Kim Ji Won still seemed kinda fresh to me in her non-villain roles so I could never fully get past seeing her in her former roles. We'll see if I can embrace Shin Hye Sun's heroine!

Ah and I just googled news on Park Shi Hoo to see why so many were protesting him. It seemed a little too blunt and to the point to have to do with his acting skills. Shame! His character in Cheongdamdong Alice was like the sweetest lead character in my eyes until Ryu Jun Yeol's character in Lucky Romance!

Shin Hye Sun was fantastic in Five Kids, glad that she's coming back with another weekend drama, but this makes me miss her with Sung Hoon!! <3 They were so darn cute together!! Too bad, I am not gonna tune in due to Park Shi Hoo.

I'll watch, looks like the kind of weekend drama that I enjoy. I hope it turns out well for Shin Hye Sun, this is her first leading role and the girl has worked relentlessly hard without much break to get to this point with no idol background. Doesn't complain much and slowly build her career up with diverse secondary roles. Enough for me to root for her forever.
Park Shi Hoo is a gamble on KBS's part but they seem confidant and I frankly don't mind him much. Also, this would be the second cast member from Secret Forest to work with Park Shi Hoo with a love line, guess who was the first! Bae Doona.

Bae Doona starred with him in a drama in 2007.... long before PSH's scandal.

I know, it was back in 2007 and what a weird connection. The drama basically upgraded him from second to first lead seeing how good he was. Now after all the years he is working with somebody who previously worked with Doona. What are the chances of that, mathematically a very low probability. As for the scandal, I am aware of all the much debated details but personally I simply don't care.

Maybe I'm the exception. I'm looking forward to PSK return. He was so good in family drama Family Honor and period drama The Princess Man. Two of my faves and highly recommended.

Forget about the main pairing and love triangle, pls drama make the second couple between Lee Tae Hwan and Seo Eun Soo because I know they will be a very adorable pair. Lee Da In (Lee Yu Bi's sister) who was paired with Do Ji Han in Hwarang is also casted in this drama, I hope she will be paired with Shin Hyun Soo.?

I agree with you. It has been 4 years since the incident happened. Am sure he felt guilty about the whole thing. Seeing the recent news, he apologized.
Don't you think he deserved a chance to redeem himself?

I started watching the drama and i am captivated by him and the others. Thank God for KBSWorld. I get to enjoy this family drama. It will will my first family drama after glass mask

I loved Shin Hye Sun in Five Enough. She's so relatable. Her character's unrequited first love. Her character's timid personality, her loyalty to a friend and her courageous heart. Hye Sun was able to portray that role so efficiently I was more eager to watch her scenes than those of the lead roles'.

I honestly liked Park Shi Hoo before the scandal. Princess' Man and Alice in Cheondamdong were two dramas I really liked. Yes, I was so disappointed and a bit grossed out because of the scandal. But that I guess... that scandal should not define the drama. After all, it seemed like it didn't define him as a human being.

Anyways... hope this drama will be as great as the teasers and the write-ups about the story writer.
