Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

I blinked and it’s suddenly July, which means that there’s a whole new crop of dramas appearing on the horizon. I’m actually a little sad that the current drama cycle is starting to wind down, because it’s a good batch of shows, and I think we all have the panda eyes to prove it. –girlfriday

Circle: Goddamn, this show rocked my world. Between this drama and Seven Day Queen I’m already content with 2017. Perhaps Circle isn’t everyone’s thing, and that’s a valid opinion (…which is wrong!), but for me it was a perfect show. I loved that even with the clever plot and twists, it didn’t forget to have a heart—ultimately, the story was driven by love. And while I never wanted this show to be about romance, I was happy to have romantic hints at the end—one, because romantic love is a powerful human motivator and that’s a lovely sentiment in a drama all about what makes us truly human, and two, because it felt like a sign that life could finally move on. I bawled buckets, the show ended, and my heart was full.

Father Is Strange: Joong-hee knows! Yasssssss. I mean, maybe he doesn’t know everything and maybe he’ll talk himself out of his suspicions, but now he has a real reason to doubt his birth story and I’m glad. And while it’s too bad that Unni’s marriage is struggling right now, I really appreciated the way she handled the conflict and wouldn’t let it be swept under the rug; she’s principled in a way that I admire, in a way that it’s difficult to live out because it’s so tempting to let things slide and trick yourself into thinking, “It’ll be different now” when you know deep down that nothing has happened to change things.

The Best Hit: One of my favorite types of gags that this show does is in playing out a joke in the background while something serious is happening in the foreground, and not drawing any attention to the joke—it’s there for you to notice, but the show doesn’t point to it and call out, “Look, I’m being funny!” Sometimes it’s funnier to let the joke lie there quietly, even if it goes unnoticed by some, because the discovery feels special.

Lookout: I didn’t realize that I wanted the two prosecutors to team up until they did, and then it just seemed so right. I was surprised that Do-han revealed his hand at this stage, and a little nervous because there’s plenty of time left for things to go sideways. But it was satisfying to see him finally show his real feelings for once, after putting up such a smarmy facade for so long.

My Sassy Girl: As far as angst tropes go, this week’s new arrival was a nicely effective way to make Gyun Woo and Hyemyeong really feel that pining for each other. I actually enjoyed how it pained Gyun Woo to have to translate another suitor’s wooing words to her while being unable to say them himself, and wished that this show had that extra touch to make me feel that pain viscerally. It’s kind of a connect-the-dots drama, though, so I appreciate what it’s doing while not necessarily feeling it in my heart.

Suspicious Partner: The separation was entirely warranted and understandable within the context, but also completely predictable, so I’m waiting it out because I feel like when these two are in resistance/denial mode, the show’s momentum halts. Now that Ji-wook’s revisiting his old memories, I’m hoping we’ll get the plot-ball rolling again, and also wrap up this serial murder case that feels like it’s run out of steam already. Can’t we just go back to what the show does well, which is bumbling Bong-hee being adorably awkward and the cuteness prevailing?

Currently recapping: Seven Day Queen

Suspicious Partner: Did they really need to push each other away again? I really dislike the my-father-killed-your-father-I-must-leave-you trope, unless there is actually a murderous, traitorous father and we’re in a revenge or historical drama. In so many cases, it’s used as a crutch to motivate a separation and a misunderstanding that feels contrived (because no fathers did any killing), and it really bugs me. Whatever the opposite of dramaland catnip is, that one’s mine.

Fight My Way: The girlfriends made me cry this week. There was just something about that flashback to their childhood, when we saw how little Seol-hee came over an hour early every day before school just to do Ae-ra’s hair because she didn’t have a mom—when Ae-ra described Seol-hee as her mom and her ocean, I cried. I was proud of both girls this week, and disappointed that Ae-ra was talked out of taking that plunger when they went to confront the cheating assholes.

Duel: I really wish this plot would move at about twice the speed it’s going, because I find each new revelation about the clones interesting, but at this pace I feel like it would take two seasons to get the story I want. I expected that the daddy-daughter relationship would be the heart of the show, but the more I watch, everything else is tangential to the three Yang Se-jongs because, well, there are three of them.

Lookout: Key and Kim Seul-gi are such a bright, happy spot in this dark drama, and even though I didn’t start watching the drama for them, they end up stealing the show whenever they get a little moment together. Is it too much to ask that the priest get more scenes too? I know that mystery is part of the allure, but let’s not be stingy about it.

The Best Hit: I kind of want 150 half-hour episodes of this drama, High Kick style. It could just go on and on, with no deep logic behind the time travel and the story traveling at a snail’s pace, and I would still love it just for the laughs. Okay, the laughs and Yoon Shi-yoon.

Circle: Well-played, Circle. Everything about this drama felt thought out and painstakingly blueprinted, and the result was extremely satisfying to watch, like watching a Rubik’s Cube lock into place once it’s finally solved. But what made me happy was that the core emotional conflict of the two separated brothers always remained at the center of this universe, and that we were allowed to really savor the big important emotional beats and cry all we wanted. I went into this finale week with sky-high expectations, and I was not let down, which is frankly pretty shocking.

HeadsNo2

Woman of Dignity: The plot took more shape this week, and I’ll admit to being ever-so-slightly interested in Bok-ja’s journey to become head of a very rich household. But it’s still a completely joyless affair, and based on the first scene of the show, I have a feeling that the biggest takeaway will be: Life sucks, and then you die.

Forest of Secrets:  ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥.

My Sassy Girl: Why, Joo-won, why? Even in his sparring scene with the prince, the prince was giving us so much narrative information through his facial expressions, and Joo-won was just mong. I desperately want to say it’s the writing, but I just don’t know anymore. Either way, I’ll go down with the Team Dalhan ship.

Circle: So… good… brain… broken…

Forest of Secrets: LOVE. Jo Seung-woo never ever disappoints. The writing and directing of this show is so assured, and the story continues to be complex and riveting. That rare flash of a smile from Shi-mok was everything!

Currently recapping: Circle

Fight My Way: Oh no! Seol-hee makes my heart hurt in all the right ways. All her work toward her dream of becoming a good mom has been destroyed and her world has been shattered, but her tears aren’t for herself, but for Joo-man because he cried. I both want to shake her for her inability to stand up for herself (well, up to this week’s episode), and hug her in a warm embrace for all the pain she’s going through, and I think Ae-ra feels the same, seeing the way she stood up for Seol-hee against Joo-man at the intern’s apartment lobby. I know this might not be a popular couple, but I’m interested in how they’ll figure out their problems and how it’ll pan out because I think it’s a realistic situation, where no one necessarily is morally a bad person (like Hye-ran), but everyone just has opposing interests that leads to pain.

murasakimi

Currently recapping: My Sassy Girl

Seven Day Queen: This show really has me in the palm of its hands. It goes so seamlessly from suspenseful to cheeky, then suddenly sorrowful to romantic. And I am here for all of it. I’m always kind of waiting for a drama to turn on me, and prove that it isn’t as good as I thought it was, but this show keeps surpassing my expectations. I love how laser-focused the storytelling is and how it never really deviates from the central story it set out to tell. A lot of sageuks like to create a sense of grandness and space in the world of their drama, so they overload the story with an excess of characters and side plots, which makes it easy to get distracted. But Seven Day Queen is not messing around one bit. This show is here to get the job done, do it flawlessly, and let you worry about the fleshy shrapnel in your chest where your heart used to be.

tipsymocha

Circle: Ugh Yeo Jin-gu, why you gotta break my heart like that? But tragic as it is, I kind of like that Circle went there with what happened to his character. It made for an interesting, albeit brief, moment where 2037 Bum-gyun had to put his money where his mouth is in terms of whether memories are what make the person who they are. When they mentioned that the clone was Circle 8-III, though, my heart broke all over again because I don’t want to think of what happened to 1 and 2. Is it masochistic of me to hope we get some more backstory into them in Season 2? Because there will be a Season 2, right?!

Seven Day Queen: Man, I’m loving this reversal. I’m not sure I like the whole prophecy-dispensing bit in the show, but if it means Chae-kyung keeping some (but not too much) distance from our prince while he tries so hard to get back in her good graces, I’ll take it. The show is setting the girl up for failure, what with her promising honesty to the paranoid king and both guys expecting her and her father’s loyalty, so she might as well enjoy all the swoony attention from Yeok while she can. And Yeon Woo-jin does swoony attention so well.

Started and finished Dear My Friends, the one which won Baeksang award for the best TV drama. This one is gold. I love it. You can check it out if you like realistic dramas. Very well execution.

Have just finished watching the latest episodes of Fight My Way. I have no doubt why I still love this drama. It's really realistic and relatable. That moment when SH gave the intern girl the water slap I was like 'Ooooh'. Felt bad for JM tbh, but I think he somehow deserves that.

I haven't watched the last episode (mind you I started when it was airing)... I cried so much at every single episode
I don't like crying :(
Anyway, yes it is awesome, human.

This episode made me feel bad for the intern girl in that it showcased just how clueless she is. I think everyone has a decent level of selfishness within them that we learn to subvert/supress for the good of others but it seems like regardless of how well-intentioned she is in apologizing to SH, she is just sooo clueless.

About the intern girl It's very difficult for me to decide if I should hate her for intentionally hurting others ( I want him so I will continue to sway him away from you) or feel pity toward her since she seems like her growing condition made her who she is (she just gets everything she wants). So I decided to stay away from this kind of person in real life since I just don't know how I should feel toward her.

Why are there so many great dramas out at once?

It took me forever to rate this week's shows but here it goes
1. The Best Hit - keeps me laughing for days
2. FOS - that smile!
3. Circle - Wow! and only just started watching last night
4. Chicago Typewriter - I'm going to miss the 30's flashbacks
5. Suspicious Partner - the new mini cast member was such a cute addition
6. Fight my way - they are all crazy and relatable

was Circle really that good? I really like Tunnel, and was hoping that i'd find a new crack drama after Tunnel ended, and therefore watched the first few episodes of Circle. But I could not move on more than the 4th episode. The FOMO in me wants me to start rewatching it again but sighhh..I fell asleep everytime I tried.
Mine must have been the minority opinion, though. Seeing that almost all of DB recappers are watching it.
SP rocks my world by the way~ And TBH!
Such a delight to watch.

Try watching just the 2017 parts, then the 2037 parts consecutively and see if it flows better. Until you get to episode 11, then just watch it straight through. I found it jarring to watch initially with the split timelines, and really only cared about the 2016 until Yeo Jin Goo turned up in both.

I almost dropped Circle in the beginning too because I found it really weird and confusing. But I hanged on because I just really didn't have anything else to watch lol. I'd say give it one more shot because I did find it more interesting as the story progressed. The ending is really good!

Ooh, all this high praise for Circle has made me decide to bump it up my watch list!

Sadly no current dramas for me. I finished Tunnel and it was such a thrilling ride to watch it. Loved the twists and the reveals, got me outta my seat a couple of times with the cliffhangers. I had a lo of questions at the end but I loved that in the last episode, the

Aurgh, my comment got cut :(

As I was saying, I loved that my questions were asked by the other characters themselves - like resetting everything and stuff. In the end, I believed Kwang Ho when he said he'll just have to keep catching the bad guy again

Also done with Chicago Typewriter - my heart still aches just remembering. The last time I had these feels were for Gaksital ? I loooved the past timeline! At first I was blown away by the reveals as the episodes went on, like seemingly simple things having more meaning but in the last run, I could have done with just the 3 of them having had the past life instead of widening the circle to mom and Tae Min. Just a minor gripe. My fave scene would have to be when they were in front of Gwanghamun and Se Joo was thanking Jin Oh for the sacrifices they made ? It was brilliant for the juxtaposition in the mundane-ness of the scene versus the thoughtful dialogue ❤️️

Currently watching Bottom of the 9th cos of the catnip posts, I needed something light after CT. Started slow and it's certainly dated but man I'm enjoying the lead couple's relationship and rapport which got better as the episodes went on. Also, why is Lee Jung Jin not leading man material now? I was so taken with him when he took part in Candy in My Ear. He's so cute and hot in the drama!

Journey to the West: Ahh, the most epic failure by Na PD ever! That was so freaking hilarious, the way he had to grovel and then actually do an apology commentary for belittling the guys! Wahaha! ? This is the funniest season ever! And Song Mino is ?

The Best Hit is the best! I am super inlove with Yoon Shi Yoon again and have just finished binge watching Kim Tak Gu! I'm amazed at how he doesn't seem to age and the genuine emotions he can emit with his face (his whole face literally lights up when he's conveying happiness and excitement and is super gloomy when he's upset or sad. And super cute when he's being adorable. And can be incredibly impish when he's being naughty and immature) I love him.

Watched episode 3 of Woman of Dignity and continue to feel ambivalent. I do like what it's doing to strip class pretension away from rich vs. poor so all we're left with is a very literal take on haves vs. have-nots, especially since the line in between seems so thin/blurred at times (probably the scene I most appreciated was when we finally get to peel back Ah-jin's name-dropping art gallery patroness drag, get the hint that she's really the supplicant in the relationship and see her exhausted in her car from the performance).

That being said, this is the kind of thing that requires a subtler hand. The script's structure is just so basic, and a lot of the power games come down to a direct chain of events, if not action-->reaction, which takes most of the fun out of it. On the acting front, Kim Hee-sun seemed to wake up a bit this week (or maybe it's just the character opening up), but I'm feeling kind of meh about Kim Seon-ah now. She and Kim Yoon-cheol are doing their best to make Bok-ja seem menacing, but her schtick is already getting tired imo, and she's not the kind of actress who can make something out of nothing (and the woman who plays the first daughter-in-law is hamming it up atm, so half the time she's on her own, too).

In between, I am watching Princess Agent and Rushed to Dead Summer Chinese dramas. We have similar taste, apparently, though I lost interest in Rush to the Dead Summer and have only seen a few episodes of the Korean shows you mentioned. I seem to have developed an unhealthy obsession with Princess Agent, though. I should not have started that series while the episodes were still airing.

My Only Love Song: Even though it's pretty ridiculous, I love Gong Seung Yeon and Lee Jong Hyun together. ❤️❤️❤️ Fell in love with them even more after watching their WGM clips. Gahhh they're so cute!!

Now that I finished Circle & My Only Love Song, I have nothing to watch. ? When it's summer, but you can't find any shows you want to watch... But during the school year you have to painfully wait until the weekend to watch everything.. Sigh I guess I'll just have to wait until a good show pops up... during the school year.

Seven Day Queen - Mostly watching this for Yeonsangun. The OTP just doesn't really interest me as much. Still love this show though.

Suspicious Partner - Hyun-soo is back!! YAY! I was never that invested in the show so the noble idiocy doesn't actually bother me too much. It's an easy watch, I like it, but it's nothing special.

The Best Hit - Seriously considering dropping this. I hate love triangles and this one is so forced and contrived and just gross with it being father/son. This show lost it's spark for me when HJ got a haircut and modern makeover. That signaled to me that it was switching from being a comedy with some small romantic elements, to a regular rom-com. So I'm probably checking out because it looks like it's a really cliche rom-com at that. I'm very disappointed because I was enjoying this show so much in the beginning, but it's just not doing what I wanted it to do.

Circle - I was waiting for this to finish to start it. I don't know though despite the near universal praise I'm a bit hesitant to start it. I really like sci-fi, but I'm also really picky about my sci-fi and I'm afraid it's going to end up being more like a typical YA dystopian novel than a good sci-fi.

I also miss the 90s hair. I hardly recognise Dabong now. ? I still think the writers are trolling us with the father-son thing and that we are supposed to think a love triangle would be gross (as HJ himself realizes), so I'm hoping for a twist. But yes, meanwhile, more comedy needed.

Still watching:

Fight My Way - I'm loving the story juxtaposition of how Ae-ra & Dong-Man are in the beginning of a relationship and Seol-Hee and Jong-Man are at the end of the relationship. It gives the whole meaning of relationships: how it starts, how it progresses and how it ends. This show feels understated (in a good way) and I'm loving all the tiny hints and details the show put for the audience to find.

Lookout - still hanging on even though I'm slowly losing interest. I still want to know how the issues are going to be resolved and how the team will win against the bad guys.

Playing catch-up with:

The Best Hit - Been 2 eps behind for this show. Watch this for the crazy antics, but not really into the forced romance. Not interested, you hear me show?! I want my bromances more that the romance coz the side romance feels forced and uninteresting. Would still watch for Yoon Shi Yoon though.

Father is Strange - Could hardly watch a 50 eps show so I watched snippets of the scenes on youtube insted. Only started watching full eps by episode 27. And now I'm hooked!

Crime Scene 3 : I missed out few of the last episodes and been reading fun reviews about Jin Ho being back on the show. Need. more. time!!

Dropping:

Suspicious Partner - Would probably pick it up again after the show ends. This is one show I don't mind being spoiled at so the noble idiocy put me off from watching. I simply don't like dramas where main characters die/ almost die/ being threatened to die etc.

Circle: Been thinking of picking up the show again after all the good reviews. Or not. I left Circle at ep 7-8 I think. Sci-fi is not my forte (even when Yeo Jin Gu is), but probably will try to finish the show one day.

Fight My Way: Love DM and AR so so much!! Their honesty and awkwardness just makes everything so refreshing and heartfelt. Good for SH for breaking it off with JM. She needs to build confidence and be treated right. She's got such a big heart even when she was just a kid. How awesome are the dads of this show.

My Sassy Girl: Yesss!! Finally, GW confesses his feelings and kisses HM!! No more denying feelings anymore, 'k? Prince Dalhan was a great new character to add to the mix.

Ruler - Master of the Mask: Finally, there is some plot movement. I think HG's role is completely overshadowing GE's. Thank goodness the crown prince and CW managed to get those little girls out of the deadly flower fields.

After Circle (and Warriors of the Dawn) ended, the craze of watching a butch of shows with motivation somehow left me, maybe it's also just the exhaustion from the training I did last week.

I'm missing Circle for the sole reason of not being able to see Yeo Jin Goo's acting every week anymore and am looking forward to Reunited Worlds for the exact same reason.

Warriors of the Dawn was pretty good btw, and watching it after Circle made my heart content and calmed me down somehow. I've heard a lot of ppl say it's bland and boring, but to me a simple story is enough. It's round and logical and down to earth, no hysterics or twists to make it complicated or eye catching, told with beautiful cinematography, directing, music, and of course, a bunch of really good actors. This movie will stay in my heart.

Why can't I edit the comment? O_O

Dropped Fight for My Way for the time being, it was my favourite of this season and I never expected to drop it, although the second couple is kind of annoying and sometimes Dong Man and Ae Ra seem to respect each other too little, although of course none of them would ever harm the other. But when the father-son plot started it really was too much for me. It's not nice for parents to be so degrading and unfriendly to their children (always! don't forget they are always like that!) while thinking that they themselves did everything perfectly or as best as they could so their children shouldn't complain. It's so asian, and it hurts me so much to see things like this on screen.

Mask: nothing much changed really. I like HG quite a lot to be honest, almost hoped she's have a dramatic death in the fire and not because I dislike her but going down while taking revenge would fit her so well. She is like an angel to the crown prince but a demon to everyone else.

Suspicious Partner: Tiring a bit of the drama... I mean the drama in the drama... This writer does tend to put different interesting stories in one drama doesn't she (? I think it's a she), I thought it was extremely cool in Remember You (but the drama was too short to fully explore the potential of every story she started in it) and in Suspicious partner it's still very interesting but a bit tiring for me.

I also watched Warriors of the Dawn and I enjoyed it. Like what you said, the story is simple and straight forward. The scenery was gorgeous and the acting was great. I could only imagine how excruciating it was to hike all those mountains and act afterwards.

The scale isn't as huge as those other war films, and Gwanghae, as a character, didn't begin the way the other medium portrayed him as - immediately brave and ready to fight for his country. He started out as a coward and fearful of the weight of responsibility given to him, which actually gave him a lot of room to grow in the film. The english reviews I've seen about the movie are actually good, but the naver netizen reviews are like plainly blind-hating the movie. @_@

As for the Reunited Worlds, I'm so nervous about it. I just saw the first script reading video and Lee Yeonhee is worse than I imagined. I hope the director can do some magic during the filming.

I agree with @javabeans regarding The Best Hit's background jokes! And the inside jokes are even better if you are a viewer of 2 Days 1 Night! Like how YSY's grandma described him as "dda bong" when they visited his grandparents. And even more recently, YSY had this curious way of opening a bag of snacks in the 25th June episode of 2D1N, and I couldn't help but squeal when the snacks Hyun Jae was munching on in Young Jae's office were also opened in the exact same manner!

Wednesday 3:30 might have been the best five hours spent of my dramalife. It has all of my catnips: cohabitation, friends to lovers, and the ever so high expectation met of a genuinely sweet, caring, and warm man. The drama is like a pastel kdrama wet dream come true. It has everything that ever compelled me to Kdramas. The otp is sweet, the annoying elements were kept to a minimum or was of no existence due to the short and sweet 30 min per ep. The heroine was a competent superior in her company, and in charge of a group of competent ladies. There were no smarmy overbearing boss that was a bully or condescending to her, there was no evil second lead or female antagonist. Women supported women. And there is a puppy. Everything that other "light rom coms" could ever hope to be. I just want to keep inside my pocket and break it out whenever life is hard.

Fight My Way - Watching the awkward dating is so adorable. So proud of Seol Hee. That breakup needed to happen sooner rather than later.

The Best Hit is the best. Love everything about this show including the amazing use of ppl (I really don't mind). Need more cameos and McDrill needs more lines.

Father is Strange - Jong-Hee is finally getting suspicious of his father. Am guessing the truth will be revealed by next week. May have to wait an extra week for the MY - JH ship to start sailing sigh. Loved seeing grandma and everyone rallying to get tuition money. The family moments in this drama are the best.

Forest of Secrets - Jo Seung Woo is amazing. He smiled for a brief second and I died (typing from the grave...lol). Seriously, he is such a good actor.

Just started on circle and woman of dignity.

I agree about The Best Hit. I have always loved smart comedies. They manage to invent new approaches when other genres tend to stick with old tricks. It does move slowly, but I like that contrast with other "into the future" plots I have experienced that tend to swoop by like a whirlwind, spill a truckload of randomness and leave before explaining what they even meant. I am so conflicted, however, between wanting Hyun Jae to stay in the future vs knowing he must eventually go back. But does he have to? Can´t the other timeline take that place? I really like the three of them together. It is really a total bummer that they dont actually share a timeline (unless Hyun Jae goes back and then returns as the older self & Ji Hoons´ dadand re-joins the gang? But it is not the same. The young him is such a big dork. I don´t kind of want him to mature up. Let him stay like this!)

This year's batch of summer dramas and 2017 dramas in general are so good! I'm pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed with all of the options

Father is Strange: The longer the ruse goes on the more I'm convinced the parents are horrible! I don't know what the "secret" is and I don't really care at this point. That couple is selfish and self-centered. It'll take a HUGE, GIGANTIC amount of compassion for me to understand, or empathize, their actions at this point. Who says, "I've possibly committed some heinous crime, lied for decades about said crime, assumed a deceased person's identity to keep said crime hidden, and prevented an innocent person from learning about their actual parent, but you know what? It's all good because me and mine are just fine!" Get that mess out of here!!

Guys, I need your help. I'm currently thinking of watching either Fight My Way or Suspicious Partner but there are mixed reviews about both of them so can some of you tell me which is the better drama?

Both are okay. I dropped SP (romance plot got too draggy, I didn't cared about murder case, but I heard it got better now). Fight my Way is not great but it is okay, I watch it when new episode comes but I don't remember about its existence on any other day.
Actually I would recommend not spending your time on either of them, but if you absolutely want to watch one of those two FMW is probably better.

I don't know if my comment could help, but I like Misaeng and Another Oh Hae-Young and I like Fight My Way too. So perhaps if you also like those two you can try FMW.
