Lee Bo-young becomes kidnapping Mother in tvN comeback project

Lee Bo-young (Whisper) is just amazing at portraying stunning kickass women, which is why I was so happy to hear that she’ll be the main protagonist for tvN’s upcoming drama Mother. It’s a Korean remake of a critically acclaimed Japanese drama by the same name that aired in 2010 on NTV.

Lee Bo-young will be taking on actress Yasuko Matsuyuki’s role in the series, a softhearted elementary school teacher. When she realizes that a girl in her class is being abused at home by her family, she makes the impulsive decision to kidnap her. She decides that she’ll rear the girl herself, starting with on an eventful mother-pseudo-daughter journey throughout Japan.

This drama won all sorts of awards all over the place, from Best Screenplay to Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Newcomer, from various award ceremonies like the Tokyo Drama Awards and Television Drama Academy Awards. And it’s been picked up for a Turkish remake as well. Hopefully the Korean team adapts the source material well, staying true to its heart-tugging message.

Mother is being produced by PD Kim Chul-kyu, who has some beautifully directed credits to his name, including On the Way to the Airport and Hwang Jin-yi. It hasn’t been set in stone, but there’s a high chance that tvN’s Mother will begin airing as a Wednesday-Thursday drama in January next year.

I'm dying to watch this! I watched the japanese version and cried buckets. But I hope they focus on casting a really good kid actor because the one in the japanese version, Mana Ashida, was absolutely phenomenal! Even at her young age, she could emote and deliver her lines so brilliantly. And as both mother and daughter, both actresses had good chemistry. Here's to hoping this version lives up to the original! Can't wait!

I love Lee Bo-young's acting so much and especially loved her in I Hear Your Voice. I haven't seen the Japanese version, but this premise seems like an amazing heart-wrenching story. I think my heart needs a break from a lot of these dramas since it gets hurt really easily, but I don't think I'll be able to stay away from this one! I really am looking forward to this!

She played a mother who's daughter was kidnapped in God's Gift and now she's the kidnapper. Full circle. Lee Bo-young slays bad-ass. Looking forward to this! ♥

Ooh, what an intriguing premise! Sounds very much like it's gonna be the character-driven kind of drama, along with the thought provoking questions on what's right and wrong - just up my alley! Excited for this ♥

I have been loving----LOVING--- all the roles that Lee Bo Young have chosen ever since her marriage, and now, after she's become a mother herself. It's as if her own marriage sparked something in her and has since translated onto the screen in her roles <3

Thank you for the article. This drama first got my attention because it was reported that the scriptwriter is Jung Seo-Kyoung who worked with Park Chan-Wook on several projects. (The Handmaiden, Thirst, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and I am a Cyborg but that's OK). To me that is the most compelling reason to watch this drama. I hope they choose fabulous cast members.

Lee Bo-young was a total badass in Whisper, and even in cutesy roles she still acts like a grown woman. idk, I have a soft for her.

It would be very nice to watch Kim Cheol-kyu do a human drama again (which is what this seems like?). He did some lovely work on More Beautiful Than a Flower.

This is great, but I'm just dying to know who they'll cast in Ashida Mana's role. I feel like that's more important than anything because she made the drama for me/drew out most of my tears (even though everyone was so great)!

Ooh I'm looking forward to this. My dream actress for the child would be Heo Jung-Eun. She's so talented and cute!

I don't watch Whisper just because the 1st and 2nd episode feel so dramatic to me (?) so I can't wait for this project.
The kid in I Have a Lover, Dokgo Woo Joo or something is cute and her acting pretty good but maybe they want to cast younger kid.

In the original, Ashida Mana was 6 when she was casted for the role. Iirc the character was also in her first year of elementary school.

Heo Jung-Eun would be perfect for this role!

I remember skipping the Jdrama knowing I would cry buckets of tears so I'll watch it before this airs.

I'm glad they cast Lee Bo-young, I might give it a try. I remember avoiding the Jdrama because it's just so so heartbreaking and scary.

Heo Jung-eun should be casted for the role of the child! She amazes me with her acting, at that age no less.

Hmm. Haven't seen Heo Jung-eun very much yet. But one vote for Shin Ri-nah (Legend of the Blue Sea). OMG, and she was in Defendant, so it would be like a meta-awesome because her onscreen father would be actually married in real life with her onscreen mother...

Wait, are my eyes deceiving me or has the upvote/downvote function been disabled? Yippie!! Hurray hurray!!!...*sprays confetti and releases fireworks*....This is a day for rejoicing my fellow beanies, so let us make merry and be cheerful !!! Drinks on me. ?. ?. ?. ?. ?. ?. ?. ?.

...*clears throat*... Now that's out of the way, unto the post. I'm very glad to hear that Lee Bo Young has not dropped out of this project, it was announced quite a while back. What makes me even more excited about this adaptation is the PD, he of On The Way To The Airport fame. That drama was so beautiful with a thoughtful and sensitive tone that was contemplative without getting overdrawn, just the kind of touch this premise requires. I'm sure we'd have lots of debates about ethics and moral conflicts. Aja!!

The thing I'm worried about is the writing. If only Noh Hee Kyung was involved in this project...or simply working with this PD instead of insisting on that Kim PD. Or better yet, writer Park Yeon Soo(I think?) of Age Of Youth, if she'd be willing. Heh, I don't think I've ever fancasted for the writing in a drama, its usually for actors and PDs.

I wish they would have cast a older actress as in the original work the mother was younger (portrayed by Ono Machiko) and the teacher was older (Yasuko is in her mid 40's)
I am a bit apprehensive as Korean adaptations tend to add on things that are completely unnecessary (such as triangle dramas) and in this case the Jdorama was fantastic. I cried so much and was impressed by the cast. Also I hope they don't change the ending as it was very poignant. Sakamoto Yuji has become one of my favorite writers, Soredemo ikite yuku was also incredible as was woman.

The source material writer, Sakamoto Yuji, has some intense dramas.
I would highly recommend Woman, starring Mitsushima Hikari and Tanaka Yuko.

Lee Bo Young is a good choice.

Mother covers a wide array of topics, abuse, kidnapping, adoption, abortion, pregnancy, abandonment, birth secret. That's a lot , the author wove all the elements in a non-makjang sort of way. I hope the adaptation can do the same.
