Bride of the Water God 2017: Episode 6
by LollyPip
This show has a way of offering answers that only lead to more questions. As we delve deeper into So-ah’s family past, it’s becoming clear that there’s more to the story than an ancestor who pledged loyalty to the gods. But uncovering the truth could also uncover long-hidden hurts, causing a crack in Ha-baek and So-ah’s tentative friendship that may be impossible to repair.
EPISODE 6 RECAP
In the Realm of the Gods, a giant eagle flies through the air and then plunges into a lake, transforming into a man underwater. A young boy fishing with his father sees Bi-ryum, the sky god, smiling up at him from the water.
But this is a darker, more sinister Bi-ryum than we’ve seen in modern times. He waves his arm and the fisherman falls out of his boat, and he and Bi-ryum both disappear beneath the surface of the lake.
We rejoin Bi-ryum in the present time, holding So-ah hostage on a floating platform over the river as he explains that gods’ servants are fair game to do with as they please. He tells Ha-baek to use his powers to save So-ah, but instead Ha-baek snarls, “You lost the god stones, didn’t you?”
Immediately the concrete under So-ah repairs itself and the storm over her head ceases. Ha-baek demands to know what happened to the stones, and as Bi-ryum begins to deny it, Mura pipes up, “He did it! I didn’t do anything wrong, Ha-baek.” HAHA, she’s such a tattletale.
So-ah staggers to her feet, brushing away Namsuri’s attempt to help. She slowly approaches Bi-ryum, then nails him with a strong left hook to his face. Sobbing, she walks up to Ha-baek and gives him a heartbreaking look of betrayal, then gets in Mura’s car and drives off with it.
Bi-ryum finds the situation hilarious. When Mura starts to explain, Ha-baek says darkly that they’ll discuss it tomorrow. He follows Bi-ryum to his car and punches him hard enough to knock him to the ground, and says that that’s a true punch.
Bi-ryum holds up his arms in mocking surrender, but his outstretched hand is ignored by both Ha-baek and Mura. They get in the backseat, Mura asking what Ha-baek will do if Bi-ryum attacks him while he has no powers. Namsuri eventually helps Bi-ryum stand, and Bi-ryum mutters that Ha-baek’s fist still feels the same.
After driving a while, So-ah tries to call Yeom-mi from a pay phone, but her friend’s phone is off. She can’t remember Sang-yoo’s number, and she slumps in defeat.
Mura paces while Bi-ryum swims, and suddenly he remembers something that happened two thousand years ago. Ha-baek had given him and Mura each a water firefly to play with, but they’d lost them.
They’d tried the same tactic of refusing to give theirs back until the other did first, and when Ha-baek discovered that they’d lost the fireflies, he’d punched Bi-ryum and nearly turned Mura into a fish. Mura calls Bi-ryum a birdbrain for trying the same scheme when it didn’t work the first time.
Mura asks why Bi-ryum is causing trouble for the Water Country over a measly god’s servant, and he says that this whole issue is causing a commotion in the Realm of the Gods. He claims to be trying to rectify the situation, but Mura scoffs, asking how fanning the flames of Ha-baek’s mother’s anger and turning those humans into servants of the gods is rectifying the situation.
She accuses Bi-ryum of wanting to torment Ha-baek, and he doesn’t deny it, though he pouts that it didn’t work. He reminds Mura that Ha-baek didn’t do anything back then, but Mura sneers that she didn’t blame him. Mura wonders why Ha-baek wanted to talk to them tomorrow instead of immediately, and Bi-ryum crows that he had more important things to worry about today.
So-ah doesn’t return home by evening, and Ha-baek stands on the roof obsessing over the danger she was in today and how he couldn’t help her. Awww, he looks miserable. Meanwhile So-ah visits her mother’s grave, and she sits for a while, idly pulling weeds and chatting.
She asks her mother if she knows their family are descended from servants of the gods, wondering if it’s her mother’s or her father’s side of the family. She tells her mother that so much is happening lately, but that she has nobody to talk to about it.
She mentions Yeom-mi and Sang-yoo, remembering Sang-yoo as the most cowardly and annoying of the orphans her father took in. So-ah says that she’s still never heard from her dad, and that she knows he’s not missing but just choosing not to come back, though she admits that she longs for closure.
Ha-baek eventually goes downstairs to the alley, where So-ah finds him waiting for her under a streetlight. She starts to walk past him, but when he asks if she’s okay, she rounds on him angrily and asks what terrible deed her ancestor did to render her life a toy for the gods.
She tells Ha-baek that she’s never had the luxury of a fun or meaningful life, though she did once have dreams. She even admits that she’s paying the price for having too big of a dream, but she says that if Ha-baek is a god, then she wants him to help her meet her father.
She rants that she wants to ask her father how he sleeps at night after leaving her with his burdens, and how he dares try to save the world when he couldn’t save his own daughter. So-ah tells Ha-baek that she can’t die until she asks him these questions.
Ha-baek listens while So-ah vents, and when she turns away, he grabs her wrist to stop her. He tells So-ah, “I promise that I will never put you in danger again because of things pertaining to the gods. I’ll protect you. Because that is a god’s duty.”
So-ah admits that she wants to insist that she can protect herself, but that the gods are too much for her. She tells Ha-baek to keep his promise, so he takes her hand and pinky-swears, looking her in the eyes with utter sincerity, then slides his hand softly from hers.
Thinking about So-ah’s question about her ancestors, Ha-baek remembers when the whole thing started. The same fisherman that Bi-ryum had dumped into the lake had apparently deceived the gods and had pleaded with Ha-baek’s mother for his life.
She had decreed that he and all of his descendants would be required to serve the gods. Not only that, but the man’s descendants would only have one child, and that the descendant’s spouse would die after the child was born.
In the morning, So-ah finds Ha-baek bathing on the roof again. She averts her eyes as he wraps himself in a towel, and once he’s decently covered she asks where she can find Mura to return her car.
Ha-baek says it’s his car now, having ordered Mura to transfer the title to So-ah, since Ha-baek doesn’t have a license. But he makes it clear that it’s his car, because he’s a god and not subject to human laws. HAHA, So-ah avoids his grabs for the keys and heads off to work in her snazzy new ride.
As Jaya parks at Hu-ye’s building, Chairman Shin yells at her over the phone for causing a scandal and creating rumors that Hu-ye is her sugar daddy. He says it’s a good thing they’re related, but Jaya snaps that changing Hu-ye’s surname to Shin doesn’t make him family.
Jaya learns from her manager that she’s expected to give an interview today with Hu-ye to dispel the rumors. She’s so annoyed that she nearly walks in front of a car, and the driver turns out to be Secretary Min, who calmly says that she was in the road.
He refuses to listen to her spoiled whining and informs her that Hu-ye won’t be giving statements today. He tells Jaya to return his handkerchief as soon as possible because it’s rude to keep other people’s property, leaving her gaping impotently.
When So-ah arrives at work, Sang-yoo leaps at her, upset that she didn’t show up for her meeting with Hu-ye yesterday. He’s also moping because she didn’t call him and let him know what was happening, and he asks how he’s supposed to face her father when he returns.
So-ah runs to her office to call Hu-ye, but Sang-yoo lets him in a few seconds later, having come to see her in person. So-ah babbles about how something came up and her phone broke, but Hu-ye quiets her with a gentle touch on the wrist, just relieved that she’s okay.
So-ah wants to sign the sale contract now, but she suddenly remembers that she accidentally left it in Bi-ryum’s car. Again Hu-ye declines to hear her explanation, just saying that he understands and he’ll wait for her to contact him.
So-ah promises to visit him this evening to sign the papers. But a strange look comes over Hu-ye’s face, and he says that he’ll be in a very private place tonight.
Ha-baek goes to see Mura and Bi-ryum, where they present him with two of the god stones. They only flicker weakly when Ha-baek tries to invoke them with his power.
Mura explains that they got together thirteen years ago, and Bi-ryum kept starting fights. A flashback shows them having a god-powers battle at the divine gate, where Mura knocks Bi-ryum across the clearing with a water grenade, and he stands and says they can resolve this by talking about it.
According to Bi-ryum, Mura ran at him, so he defended himself a little. Mura huffs in disbelief, saying that his “defending himself a little” consisted of throwing a thunderbolt at her, ha.
Bi-ryum adds that that’s when Joo-dong threw himself between them, and the god stones were flung away from them. All we see of this mysterious Joo-dong is a shock wave of power holding Bi-ryum and Mura apart.
They’d found two of the god stones right away, but Mura’s was thrown quite a long distance. Bi-ryum says that Joo-dong went to retrieve it and hasn’t been seen since. Mura tells Ha-baek that they’d tried to find Joo-dong, but then Bi-ryum ran off to Rome.
Bi-ryum insists that he was coming right back, but that he didn’t expect the red water to appear so soon (to herald Ha-baek’s quest for the stones). Ha-baek yells at them both for being so irresponsible, but Bi-ryum says that this is all Ha-baek’s fault for losing his coordinates.
When Ha-baek and Mura leave Bi-ryum’s penthouse, Mura again whines that she really did try to find the missing stone. She tells Ha-baek that everyone knows how Joo-dong tends to disappear when he’s focused on something.
She says that that day, Joo-dong said something was strange and requested that they come meet him at the divine gate. Ha-baek asks what was strange, but Mura nervously admits that she never found out because she and Bi-ryum were fighting.
When asked what the fight was about, Mura snaps that it’s none of Ha-baek’s business. But she promises that they’ll find the missing stone before the water turns red again, because Bi-ryum knows a lot of minor gods and she’s sure he’s working on it right now.
She says that the problem isn’t that Ha-baek lost the coordinates—it’s that the god stones were left in the human world. She wonders what any of this has to do with becoming king of the Realm of the Gods, and Ha-baek remembers asking that very question of the priest who sent him here.
Before she goes, Mura impulsively hugs Ha-baek and murmurs a quiet apology. She gets into her car and starts to drive away, but she stops to add one very important thing: “I don’t like the clothes you’re wearing.” HA, nobody can accuse Mura of being deep.
So-ah replaces the phone that Bi-ryum destroyed, only to realize that she doesn’t know anyone’s number. Ha-baek calls to demand that she bring his car because he has somewhere to go. He’s annoyed when she refuses to let him drive himself, and asks how one goes about obtaining a license.
He takes So-ah to the location where he thinks he lost his coordinates, which just happens to be the same place where So-ah buried the diamond ring from Bi-ryum. So-ah asks what the coordinates look like, but Ha-baek says she wouldn’t be able to see them.
So-ah nags Ha-baek to tell her anyway, so he recites, “It has the temper of water, but the clearness of fire. It is the truth that is engraved with solid markings. All moments are stopped, yet all moments are passing by. The one and only answer that is intact.” So-ah blinks at him, then says that she’ll wait while he looks. LOL.
While she waits, she calls Ha-baek (who’s only a few feet away, hee) to ask for Bi-ryum’s number. Ha-baek says jealously that she doesn’t need it, but So-ah explains that she left something important in Bi-ryum’s car. Ha-baek hangs up on her, so she entertains herself by tinkering with her new phone.
She thinks of how to save Ha-baek’s number in her contacts, settling on “water ghost.” She takes a few pictures and a video of him when he’s not looking, marveling that he’s finally working at something for a change.
When he stops to think about what Mura could have meant when she said Joo-dong claimed that something was strange, So-ah giggles to herself that he looks like he’s striking poses. Then she remembers his heartfelt promise to protect her, and she doesn’t notice him sneaking up on her until he pops up a few inches from her face.
He says that he didn’t find anything, then notices her new phone. To avoid being caught sneaking pictures of him, she suggests that they take a picture to commemorate the place where they both lost something important. But when she can’t get both of their faces in the shot, Ha-baek snatches the phone away and pulls her in close.
He turns his head to find her right there, and they both freeze, affected by the close proximity. Ha-baek gulps a few times, then counts down for the picture.
Hilariously, they can’t manage to take a single picture where both of them have their eyes open. It breaks the tension, and even when they finally get a shot with their eyes open, they’re both making weird faces. Hee. Ha-baek gives up and So-ah sends him the pictures, and he cracks a tiny smile as he flips through the silly photos.
While they walk, So-ah asks Ha-baek if he’ll go home when he finds the last god stone, and he confirms it. She mutters that he won’t be protecting her for long, then asks what happens if he doesn’t get his powers back. Ha-baek says that won’t happen, because he is one with the Water Country.
So-ah is surprised it takes so little to become the king, so Ha-baek explains that it’s because he was born to be king, unlike human kings who are elected. But So-ah says that there are no more kings, just people entrusted with authority for a temporary term.
She explains that the problem is when they elect people who forget that, so they have to be sure to elect people with good memories. She says it doesn’t matter since she’s leaving, but Ha-baek asks, “Does it really not matter?”
He wonders how he would feel if he had to leave the Water Country forever. But he says that will never happen, because the Water Country without him is unimaginable.
They pick up Namsuri after work, and So-ah asks them to direct her to Bi-ryum’s penthouse (so she can retrieve the land contract). Ha-baek snaps that he needs to go to the divine gate, insisting that his need is greater than hers. Namsuri quietly suggests that they eat something, and Ha-baek’s growling stomach settles the argument, to his chagrin.
Before they go, Yeom-mi finally calls So-ah, who rants that while Yeom-mi was gone, she could have been robbed, scammed, or haunted by a water ghost. Ha, Yeom-mi just hangs up and texts So-ah to come to her booth because there’s someone there she needs to meet.
Yeom-mi glowers at Ha-baek and asks So-ah why he’s still hanging around. She pulls So-ah aside to say that she met a godlike guru, and that he’s here to meet So-ah.
She drags So-ah into her weird little fortunetelling booth, where a shadow lurks behind a beaded curtain. So-ah impatiently gets up to leave, then stops dead in her tracks when the man says, “You have no luck with parents.”
He clucks his tongue and says that she’s frustrated because of her land, which is both hers and not hers. He says that it’s not in her fate to sell the land, because a heavy spirit is driving away all of her luck. The guru claims that a minor god is living in her house, and that things will get worse unless she kicks him out.
So-ah whispers that he’s not a minor god but a real one, and the guru barks that a minor god wouldn’t admit he was minor. Suddenly, from behind So-ah, Ha-baek’s voice deadpans, “Who are you calling a minor god?”
The guru parts the beads, and Ha-baek sees that it’s Geol-rin, the banished god who kissed him and made him experience human things like hunger and thirst. Geol-rin shoves So-ah into Ha-baek and makes a run for it.
Ha-baek is hot on his heels, with Namsuri not far behind. Geol-rin heads for the stairwell, nearly colliding with Yeom-mi, who windmills dangerously before Namsuri catches her in his arms. It’s adorably romantic… until Namsuri gently sets Yeom-mi on the floor and resumes the chase, leaving her with her toe still pointed skyward.
Ha-baek nearly catches Geol-rin several times as he flees the building and takes off down the street, but he’s thwarted every time. Eventually Geol-rin finds his way to a balcony and jumps to the ground below. Ha-baek makes a leap worthy of a superhero, staying just behind him as Geol-rin enters another building and climbs to the roof.
Just as Ha-baek catches up, Geol-rin jumps off the building, falling a frightening distance. Ha-baek looks over the edge but all he sees is Namsuri standing next to a minor-god-shaped impression in the concrete. Adding insult to injury, Ha-baek’s stomach chooses that moment to painfully growl its unhappiness.
So-ah takes him and Namsuri to eat, preparing Ha-baek’s first bite of noodles (so cute). But she interrupts him before he can eat it, asking what they plan to do when they catch Geol-rin.
Namsuri says they’ll break the curse, but Ha-baek stops him from explaining how it’s done. So-ah guesses that Ha-baek has to kiss Geol-rin again, sending poor Ha-baek into a coughing fit, ha.
So-ah says it’s better than being hungry, making hilarious kissy noises at Ha-baek as he shoots eye-daggers at her. He barks that he’s not hungry, and Namsuri says that the curse will be broken when they get back to Water Country.
While on the subject, So-ah asks how she can break her family’s curse. Ha-baek says it’s not a curse, but a promise her family made for committing a sin. She insists that he tell her what sin was committed so she can understand, so he slams down his fork and complies.
He says that a woman was attacked and thrown into the water, and that the rules were broken so that she could live in Water Country. She lived a good life, but one day she became ill with worry over her blind father, so she was sent back home.
She fell in love with the king in her own country and got married, and never returned to Water Country. The entire Realm of the Gods felt betrayed after all that they’d done for her. Ha-baek grows more and more furious as he recites the story, and when So-ah asks if her name was Shim Chung, he storms out of the restaurant.
So-ah gets their food packed up and rejoins the guys in the car. She tells the still moping Ha-baek that her parents’ last names were Yoon and Kang, suggesting that he tell her a story with the correct last name next time.
She’s ready to see Bi-ryum now, but Ha-baek says there’s no need and hands her a stack of shredded paper. It’s the land sale contract, which Bi-ryum had given him. Angry that she tried to sell his land, Ha-baek tells So-ah that he’ll forgive her just this once.
So-ah yells that it’s her land, but Ha-baek informs her that it will never sell. So-ah snaps that she has nothing else to sell, and she gets out of the car and walks away.
Surprised by her emotional reaction, Ha-baek’s anger dissipates and he follows her. He grabs her wrist to stop her, and she says that she was happy when he said he’d protect her because she thought she finally had someone on her side.
So-ah starts to cry as she continues that she knew his time here was short, but that she liked being happy, even if it was foolish and temporary. But now she shakes her head at Ha-baek, saying that she doesn’t know what kind of god he is.
Ha-baek says haltingly that he’s the god of water, and So-ah agrees that he’s someone from a world bigger than hers, and meant to do bigger things. She says that it won’t matter if small, nameless things leave without a trace. It breaks my heart that she sounds like she’s referring to herself.
Pulling her arm from his grasp, So-ah walks away from Ha-baek, leaving him looking shaken. She wipes her tears and calls Hu-ye to ask if she can visit him at home. She hangs up and continues walking, and as she crosses the street, a truck swerves around a broken-down vehicle and barrels toward her.
Ha-baek barely has time to call a warning before the truck slams right into So-ah. He runs to the spot where she was just standing, but she’s gone without a trace. Gasping in panic, Ha-baek screams, “Yoon So-ah! YOON SO-AH!!”
COMMENTS
The Truck of Doom? Really, Show?? The only way that I won’t be disappointed at this much-overused trope is if the show does something really unique with it in the next episode. It almost looked as if So-ah disappeared at the moment the truck would have slammed into her, and if that’s the case then I may be able to accept this turn of events… provided that she was, for example, saved by Hu-ye, causing him to be revealed as some sort of god. Or some other interesting twist. Regardless, this had better not be your garden variety Truck of Doom, or I’m going to be very upset.
On a positive note, I’m really appreciating the growth that Ha-baek is experiencing lately, particularly in the way he treats So-ah. He no longer orders her around like a servant—well okay, he still orders her around, but he accepts her refusal to obey much more graciously nowadays. And both times when she’s been upset with him, he’s shut his mouth and really, truly listened to her without all the “I’m a god and can do no wrong” bluster. He seems to care what So-ah thinks and feels now, and more importantly, to care about how his actions affect her. Oh, he can say it’s his godly duty all he wants, but you can’t fool me—he’s obviously feeling more than duty towards So-ah. Once they’re back together, I’m betting the tables are going to turn and he’ll find himself having to work to regain So-ah’s positive regard. It’s going to be so fun watching the water god humble himself.
I’m glad that we’re finally getting some answers, particularly in the reasons why So-ah’s family are the gods’ servants. The pact involves more than I expected, and reveals that it’s her father who was the previous descendant, since it was her mother who died. It also explains why So-ah lives such a difficult life even after Bi-ryum gave her the good-luck ring—because a life of hardship is part of her family’s curse. It definitely sounds as though we haven’t gotten the entire story though, and from the way just telling it infuriated Ha-baek, I’m guessing he was directly involved with the human woman who betrayed the gods.
In fact, that’s my only major complaint about the show so far, that it’s doing a little too much teasing of information and not offering enough actual information to balance it out. There’s a way to hint at the truth that whets the audience’s appetite for more, and it’s a delicate balancing act, but at this point it’s very unbalanced. Nearly every time Bi-ryum and Mura have a discussion, I come out far more confused than when I went in. They discuss events and people with no explanation, so with no context and the limited knowledge we have of the lore of the Realm of the Gods, these mentions fail to be interesting teasers and just end up sounding like irrelevant white noise. I only hope that by the time the show deigns to explain them, I can still remember that they were even mentioned.
And I don’t understand why this happens, because some things are teased very well and create a real curiosity. For example, I’m dying to know who this mysterious Joo-dong is, and why he seems to be at the heart of the issue of the missing god stone. I have my suspicions that it’s Hu-ye, but if he’s Joo-dong, then why isn’t he looking for the missing stone? Unless he’s found it, in which case, why is he trying to become perfectly human? Maybe I’m seeing something sinister where there isn’t anything to worry about. But something about Hu-ye seems too perfect, too innocent, and I don’t trust him. There are moments when his perfectly sweet facade seems to slip, such as when he was watching Ha-baek from that bridge, and I just can’t help but put my guard up whenever he’s around So-ah.

I don't think HooYe is JooDong. Yes he's a mysterious character but I feel like there's more than him being JooDong. They let the audience think it's him (almost got fooled because of his particular attention and care with plants) but them BAAMM! He's not JooDong he's someone else. (yes, I know his character in the manhwa is someone else too but I expect it to be quite different here.
Maybe because I haven't read the manhwa and though there are tropes I've seen that are in other dramas just like others dramas as well and I don't compare it I'm really having fun watching it. Sure it's not perfect, just like any other drama. It's a good one. I feel like they're really just planting seeds till now and those seeds will grow and bloom full speed ahead once they finally start to fall in love with each other cause that's when all the real tragic begins. I'm excited for that to happen.

Maybe Truck of Doom is just happy to make an appearance after a long hiatus. Or maybe ToD is extra cranky about being typecast again... That was one fast cameo!

I was happy to see the Truck of Doom again. I thought it might get uppity abut taking roles after the success of Goblin and maybe transitions to just movie roles for awhile. It is nice to know the Truck of Doom is still interested in doing dramas despite the more intense work schedules.

Very happy to have a Water God who likes to sit in the tub. ^_^
She's so worried the neighbors will complain but idk, if I were a neighbor, a "complaint" would be the last thing on my mind, ahem.

I kind of feel sorry for So-Ah in this episode. How her family is cursed to live a hard life, and the only thing her family have is the land (technically it's the God's) which she's not allowed to sell. Poor So-Ah, but at least you got NJH as your personal bodyguard :)

No, I reckon that it's her mother that was the descendant since her father was the one that left her mother. It was said that the descendant's spouse would leave soon after their child was born.
Also...anyone else think that Habaek loved the first female ancestor, the one who stayed in the Water Country? He was so emotional and it seemed like it was personal when he said they were betrayed by her. Though....I feel like they totally overreacted to someone leaving and marrying. But if it's the scenario where Habaek was in a relationship with her...then it makes sense why they were so angry.

The story he told to deflect her was a common fairy tale. What really happened probably does involve a woman and betrayal.

I have a strong feeling that the father is Joo Dong. The descendant's spouse is supposed to die soon after the new descendant is born. However, the father didn't die. We clearly saw him leave for his world saving mission when So-ah was in high school. That tells me, 1) he's a god since he constantly had to leave (to look for the stone? Godly business stuff?), 2) he's potentially Joo Dong (because it's a kdrama, and these things are bound to happen)

Going off this theory, though, this would make So-ah a demigod. Can demigods die? I remember earlier episodes prophesizing So-ah will die soon.

I wrote a comment with this kind of theory...that the father must be related to the gods, somehow. And especeially him being a god...even if it's a minor god....that would help with the future (love) relationship between HaBaek and Soo Ah......this is coming from someone who hasn't read the manga.

So-ah might be a demi god, she didn't die when she jumped off the bridge and we didn't see how she survived or who rescued her?
We will see in the next episode how she survived the "Truck of Doom" LOL
Her father maybe went back to the world of Gods that's why she can't contact him.

I have to rely on subtitles and translations of others, so I may be off, but according to the translations I've seen as well as what Lollipop said in her recap was, "She (Habeak's mother) had decreed that he and all of his descendants would be required to serve the gods. Not only that, but the man’s descendants would only have one child, and that the descendant’s spouse would die after the child was born."
Now if that is the case, then isn't it possible that the dad is the descendant, and the mom dies right away after giving birth. Thus dad could have remarried right away giving Yoon So Ah a different last name? Thus maybe Yoon So Ah is of the Shim family. Or here's another thought, what if it's not just the man's descendants but the females descendants too. Thus, if that is the case, then Yoon So Ah's husband would end up dying after she gave birth. Interesting thought if that ended up being Habeak as the descendant's spouse. That would be killing off a god...
Just some thoughts,

That would be ironic if her curse threatens to kill Habaek since it's Habaek's family who gave her that curse in the first place.
(it would almost be like poetic justice since it was cruel to make a curse that would harm innocent people that would also last for eternity).

"That would be ironic if her curse threatens to kill Habaek since it's Habaek's family who gave her that curse in the first place."
(Please take my comment with a grain of salt, having come from someone who hasn't read the manga, and so is watching the series with no background information on plot and characters. :) )
That said, I really hope there won't be a point in the plot arc where Habaek would give up his powers (and immortality) as a price to pay to be with So Ah.
Because that would make the existence of the curse really, really irritating. Heh.

I totally agree with theory and add to it I think this is why we see So-ah fling herself off the bridge. I think she's hoping that the gods will also take pity on her in the same way with the girl from the story and save her, allowing her to stay in the god realm aka be Habaek

That's my guess too at this point. Joo Dong disappeared 12 years ago. Has it been said how long Soo Ah's father has been gone? It seems her mother and her were used to him leaving for shorter periods before he disappeared without contact. Off doing a god's business?
My only point of reference are Greek myths. The gods would come down in the human world and play havoc with human lives for their own desires. While in this story there is a rule about not endangering human lives, that doesn't precude other kinds of hurt.
I hope Hu-ye isn't evil. That actor has recently played that part already. I like that he is just a weirdo, though he does seem to be covertly testing and observing human behavior. What's with the handkerchief? It was like a little game to see what the spoiled brat would do, with the secretary facilitating it.

I think So-Ah was saved by Hu-ye. His expression sort of changed when she begged him to meet her like right now. As for Joo Dong, I have this nagging feeling that it could be So-Ah's father but who knows? God's have different names in the human realm.
I think Habaek loved or liked the woman who betrayed him and who once lived in the water country . Maybe she is her fiancee or something and Maybe that's the reason why Mura don't like human females because he was deeply hurt.
It's amazing how Habaek's character changed after each episode. I like how he listens to So-Ah and apologizes even if he is a god. Clearly there's more to the story than meets the eye and I can't wait what that "something strange" that Joo Dong have said.

Uri Habaek-nim!! Ahhh he's soooo sweet! (When he's not trying to boss her around of course!)
Like you said LollyPip, I really love how he stops and listens to her instead of trying to argue back or ignore her! It says so much about him as a person/god. I really don't care about the truck, since she disappeared, which is a fun cliffhanger. In fact, I think it's a lot like several things in this drama that are recognizable tropes but combined and used in a newer/funnier/different way than I've seen. I always sense an underlying tone of sarcasm and satire with this show, so when something like the truck is used, I laugh at the intentional absurdity, but I'm also invested enough to be along for the ride.

And herin lies the inherent problem about the Truck of Doom--EVERY time it's used, it's absurd. I find myself letting out a chuckle or an exasperated sigh when I see it coming. My heart really went out for So-ah in this ep. She suffered such a too-much-to-handle life for a normal ordinary human. Especially all of those hardships she had gone through were just some kind of redemption for some sin that her remote ancestor had committed.
Could that sin be some sort of betrayal between lovers, since her ancestor and habaek could have been in a romantic relationship? whatever the case, that was an unfair fate, 1200 years of sufferings generation after generation would be too much. Life as a servant of the Gods was an endless suffering: as a human she faced unpleasant things in life with no idea that those had happened simply bcz of her family was cursed; as a servant, she is subject to swinging moods and whims of Gods with no power to stand up for herself. I really felt for her desperation here. Habaek might be a streak of sunlight at the end of the tunnel after such a long time, but he could leave her at any time without having to look back, she's so trivial like that in the Gods' eyes. If i were her, how could I live??

My heart also broke for So-Ah in this episode. I wanted to scream and hit Ha-Baek after he told her she couldn't sell that land. Throughout the episode, you could tell she was feeling sad that Ha-Baek will leave her once he gets his powers and stones back. And then now he's telling her she can't sell the land that he's going to have no use for once he leaves her. She's bought him a cell phone, cell phone plan, and all that food. The only time she's really happy is when she's thinking about her future in Vanuatu. I wanted to cry in frustration on her behalf.
She's going to freak once she finds out that part of her family curse is that the person she marries is going to die after she has a kid. And she's going to completely lose it once she finds out that she's also destined to die.
I'm glad she managed to get Mura's nice car after HaBaek totally destroyed her car. Yes, it was the stalker who messed with it, but that car after Ha-Baek's stunt was a goner.

When I saw Habaek getting vexed while describing the betrayal story I just screamed 'IT'S NOT NAKBIN RIGHT!" I really don't want this spin off drama to drag her character in it. Raise your hands if you feel the same!
On another hand this drama is lacking two things
1. Bad Nam Joo Hyuk moments
I mean look at him! From the smirks to the tone, he's perfected all of em. It feels like I saw him as the sweet swimmer boy in school 2015 yesterday. But news flash! They're airing school 2017 ALREADY and NJH is acting as the lead in dramas.

I don't know if anyone else has thought about this theory, but ... could it be possible that Soo Ah's father might be a (minor) god or demi-god? I know, as of now, she's a descendant from those poor humans...but think about it... Soo Ah's father's being gone must have some meaning, maybe a "special" meaning...and also that way HaBaek and her could end up together happily ever after...just a crazy theory....I know, but since normally love between a human and a god doesn't end too well ...that could solve this situation (kind of).

Plus they've stayed in the human world far longer than Habaek has.
At the rate everyone seems to be going, Habaek is developing into a mature and compassionate god much faster than these two ancient teenagers ever have.

I think so ah is kidnapped by some god by indirectly using the truck of doom. I really like the TOD in supernatural themed shows because the people don't die, they are just saved in the nick of time by someone.
And every single time the name Jaya just reminds me of a close friend with the same name

Does anyone else think that the coordinates are hidden in Soah's pen with that small map? I'm pretty sure that's where the coordinates are. I liked the Soah is a more realistic heroine. When she found out that the new car was in her name, she took it because she needed it. She also accepted Habaek's protection without making a fuss. I thought the pinky-swear was the sweetest pinky-swear I have seen in any drama. There was something so moving in seeing Habaek being so gentle. Also Soah and Habaek are definitely developing a strong attachment. Lastly there is more going on with Mura and Biryeom.

That pinky swear is one of the cutest things I have seen in a while. So sincere, it was funny but also really touching. I also like the type of heroine So ah is. Flawed but not annoying, helpless but even so ready to stand up for herself. Just thinking about her situation - how brave of her to slap that wind God! I like her. :) I am also liking the actress who plays her which makes me really happy cause I wasn't so sure about her before but now I will look forward to other projects from her. ?

I love the pinky swear. It was such a solemn promise. Stamped and copied. So you know it has to be taken seriously!
What if the coordinates HaBaek had was something that led him to the true coordinates - which is Soah herself.
I'm admittedly pretty lost on the god stones and what Ha Baek really needs to do to become King.

Reading the recap made me vaguely remember the traditional story of a girl whose father was in the water world (for reasons I can't remember) and the girl, to save the old ailing father, goes to live in the water world in his place but then misses home and so they let her go back?
So supposing that's the case, combined with previews, what I've read of the manhua synopsis, and what happened in ep 5. Did the girl actually go live in the Water World not because she fell in but because she was there to save the father? He falls in love with the girl. In either case, she goes back to the real world because she misses her home so much and gets sick, but in the process betrays the gods, and they had to be servants. But this is the family of Shin.
Then, the family of Shin goes to find a substitute family to take over this punishment like the manhua does. And that's why So-Ah's family is involved even though her last name isn't a Shin?
And then they somehow wiped Ha-Baek's memory since he was so in love with the girl?

I depend on translation, and my translated subs said: the girl fell into the water, stayed in the water kingdom. She missed his blind dad, and went back to the human world to tend for her dad with the meds given to her by the gods. But....she didnt return. She fell in love with the king and got married.
Now the questions:
-who is the fisherman? How come he still become fisherman if the daughter/mother married with the king???
-how come the fisherman family punished when he does nothing? Is he her blind dad who miraculously cured? Why is he still fishing? Where is the daughter? How come she isnt punished? Geez.
-how can you transfer a curse/promise to other family?

my translation is differ from you. it says that the girl was sacrificed by the villagers to the water god for maybe 10 bags of rice (i can't remember the exact amount) but the water kingdom took pity of her, so they let her live in there, but then one day the girl fell ill because she worried for her blind father, so the water god gives her permission to visit along with gold . but she never returned, and they come she fall in love with a king and married her. and the surname is shim.
so, i don't think this story is relatable to the fisherman. it must be a different story at all.

Thanks LollyPip!
The white noise you mention is real. And the white noise to me at the moment is Jaya and the question about what role she has in the plot. Perhaps she's there to ensure So Ah's life is difficult and full of betrayal, but she seems like white noise to me.
My husband and I were not really finding this show as funny as it is supposed to be in the earlier episodes, but I chuckled at the failed selfie session. I never take selfies... too embarrassing. ?
Since most of the great CGI and godly powers get manifested when So Ah's in danger. I'm hoping we're getting something mighty interesting now that the ToD has made it's appearance. Never too late for the ToD to redeem itself!!! ?

I totally agree, @lollypip!
I read the manhwa and I also feel alienated and lost watching the drama. It seems to me, the writer just assume that we all know who the gods are, their story and how things work.

I have so many questions in my head:
Minor God: is he necessary?
Who is the minor god whom Habaek chased? What was his role? What does ge has anything to do with Habaek, his power lost and everything at all? Why do we need this character in this drama??? Is he important, or is he just a convenient distraction?
Soo Ah is...kind?
Soo Ah and her ability to hear plants is gone. But is was said here and there that she has good heart but tries to hard to act evil. They even made her a psychiatrist but the kind of psychiatrist that doesnt really listen to you (which is odd. How can she help if she doesnt listen?) And she even has problems because broken people are drawn to her, to be saved. But she remains just that: still too busy worrying about her own problems that she doesnt really help these people. She even took Habaek to find the coordinate, but she sat down soon after and recorded Habaek searching for it instead. What the? If she is actually kindhearted (but tries not to be), they should have shown that a few times more.
Joo Dong
Who is he? What does he do? Why is he important? Where is he now? Even gods cant locate him? Really?
Power lost
What caused the power lost? And while we're at it, why does his power come and go? What is the rule? How can he get his powers back? Anything like it happened before?
Taking the throne
Why gods must go to the earth first and get the stones? Might be because they have to learn to be a good ruler, but is there any rule? If Habaek cant collect the stones, what happen then? Any mechanism? How can he return to God's realm, with no power and no stone, and no coordinate? So frustrating to Habaek.
Mura and Biryeom
Any backstory? I mean, why do they bicker?why does MR let BR stayed near her if she rejected his proposal? Is it just me or they acted like kids, who forgot why they bicker, bicker all the time, but stayed together?
Hoo Ye
We know that he is a businessman. He likes to garden. He doesnt have sense of humor but is curious about it. He is...adopted? He wants Soo Ah's land (which might be the entrance to the realm of the gods?). But does it have anything to do with anything? Who is he, really? Is there any grand scheme? To topple the current system, perhaps? To change the ruler/system of the god/human realm? If that so, they should have given us the basics of things, yes? How things work, for instance, and what is the connection about both realms (and how). Does he know Bi Ryeom? Does he know that Bi Ryeom and Mu Ra are gods?
Curse
Who was that fisherman? What does he have anything to do with the woman in Habaek's story? If the woman is his daughter, how come he still fish? He should have been richer, since the daughter married the king. And who is that kid? If they are both descendant of the woman who betrayed the gods, then why do the curse given to them, and not the woman?
Unless the translations were wrong, the curse said that the spouse will leave, and that the...

The "hearing plants" thing was Habaek's will, sort of like a punishment. I can't remember when, but he tells her that he made that stop. After that ordeal at the hotel with Jaya and the roses, Habaek had found Soah there and she said the flowers were chattering too much. He took pity on her then, having seen how much she was suffering, and made it stop (though we don't realise until later that this is what happened). Soah contacting Yeom-Mi and Yeom-Mi telling her that the voices were likely caused by guilt & suppression of her kind nature was a plot line, for the sake of a deeper reveal of Soah's true self and a chance for (eventual) character progression.

Unless the translations were wrong, the curse said that the spouse will leave, and that the descendant will have short life. Hence, I think the descendant is Soo Ah's mother. Just like how Soo Ah is the descendant and will have short life and left by all the guys in her life (Ahn Binh, Habaek...). I cant gamble that her dad is joo dong, another god, or demi god, or anything though.

I think the translation you got sounds more logical i.e. the descendant's spouse will leave and the descendant will have a short life.
I earlier thought the translation said the descendant's spouse will die and that makes everything so confusing.

I'm confused by the 2 stories of humans who get gods pissed off at them. Girl falls in love with a king? Guy in boat didn't look like a king or descendant of a king. Girl's father was blind? Guy in boat wasn't blind and he had a son, not a daughter.
Are we dealing with 2 separate families???

My first thought was that Habaek was just reciting the Sim Cheong tale in an attempt to cover up the real story. The real story being something utterly cruel and unfair to the human descendants.
Why was it the "hot air" god that pulled the fisherman under? Why did Habaek look appalled and walk away whilst his mother(?) pronounced her verdict. Something seemed definitely fishy...
But then, why would Habaek get so riled up while telling the story to Soo Ah if he was lying?

Actually I like the way he is portraying the god experience in the human world. First you could see mainly indifference and annoyance. To me, he came across not cold but keeping distance and uninterested. It is only in the last episodes that you can see a new spark in his eyes. And he definitely feels guilty for So Ah. I like how they are showing a gradual change in him.

I laughed at the cliffhanger and to say the truth, I liked it a lot. It serves well Habaek, who is being again insensitive to So Ah's hardships, so I hope she takes her time in coming back and he has time to miss her.
Regarding JooDong, I'm dying of curiosity to know who he is. Hu Ye is a too easy option I think, and the others do not seem to recognize him. Moreover, when they are hiding his face, it might be someone else that we already know about??

Hmm.. Just like others have already said before, Joo-dong could be So-ah's dad. So-ah's wish is to see her dad and Ha-baek's mission will be over once he finds Joo-dong. If this theory is right, it will be heartbreaking indeed. It seems that So-ah has fallen for Ha-baek now and it will break her to know that her one wish will mean Ha-baek needs to leave.
That's the thing about fantasy dramas. They don't belong in the same world and at one point, one needs to leave. I don't think I can handle it when the time comes.
As for the dropping of clues but not giving much answers, it's just the writer's style. I'm watching Arang again rn with my mom and I realized how many questions the writer give out only to give out random clues. It all make sense in the end though so I don't mind picking up crumbs for now.
I don't think I can wait a week because of that ending though! I bet it's Hu-ye who saves her this time and I'm so excited to know what he really is.
P.S. Thank you So-ah for not wasting food and asking to wrap it and take it home. Bless your soul, my dear.

Negative comment coming up on this drama.
This is a really badly produced drama.
Characters are poorly fleshed out and their motivations and behaviour are probably appropriate for teenagers but hardly the stuff for thousand year old gods nor adults. Seriously a medically qualified psychiatrist being hung up on a "daddy abandonment" issue from 15 years ago? And a very self centered, self immersed, whiny psychiatrist too. A supposed God that suddenly makes a promise to protect but has no particularly good reason (pity?) to do so. If you start with arrogant, stay that way until there is a reason not to be. Right now, as far as romance is concerned, it is hard to conceive of two less likeable characters so for them to fall in love is a one big meh.
Cinematography is pretty average for a drama.
Story needs a writer. Six episodes in and we're still having half the episode filled with bickering, whimpering, self pity and wailing? Then the other half of the episode with random occurences that don't tie together. Want a mystery? Sure... but this appears more like random events that don't move any story along. God needs stones to become next king. Goes in search of stones. Stones are missing. (Stolen? Lost? Hidden?... who knows 6 episodes in).
It is hard to comment on the acting since the story and characters are so poorly developed that the director appears to have given up and just told the actors to follow the script.

that is a very weird comment since one of the main reasons for dysfunctional adults is dysfunctional, broken home and fear of abandonment. and if adults could on their own solve and let go of past and childhood traumas there would be no need for psychologist or the help of medication therefor psychiatrist.
what is true, that ALL psy. students need themselves to go and have therapy sessions as part of of becoming ones, at least where i come from. and SA is well aware of being a bad one she doesnt hide it and is confronted by everyone about it. its part of her character being an unsuitable psychiatrist.
also to me all kdrama are aimed at teenagers - ALL
that is why in SK there is no different channel or timeslot for adults and teenagers they are targeting the same audience. you have school 2017 in the same timeslot as king love.
kdrama are a combination of telenovela and soap. and you need to accept that and just watch those of them you like, and not watch those you dislike, dont force yourself

I accept all that you say.
1) I know medically trained psychiatrists are REQUIRED to go through regular counseling themselves as a professional requirement. Which is why she should recognize from her training that her solution is NOT an external event like a confrontation with her father. Again accepting this as a part of the conceit of the drama is OK, but it seems they could have picked any OTHER profession for her and it would have made it much more acceptable (for me, at least). I mean this is like making a character a lawyer and then showing that the lawyer doesn't understand the basics of tort law. Or an accountant who doesn't understand financial statements... why unnecessarily stretch credulity.
2) I accept that most dramas are aimed at a core audience and have to be reasonably accessible. But there are current examples (Forest of Strangers) that don't dumb down the plots and characters. This one is probably aimed at a younger audience so you do make a good point.
3) All that aside, for a good drama, make her more three dimensional rather than hammering the same issue over and over again. To me, this is poor writing and directing since you could easily take 5-10 minutes in each episode and flesh out the background of (a) why the stones are important (b) the role of the stone's guardian (c) why the guardians have to be on earth (d) who the heck is the CEO (e) who is for and against the soon-to-be King (f) the nature of the Gods and relationship to the human world.
4) I am most likely giving up on this drama (sadly... I was hoping for better). To me SK should be at the pinnacle of making high quality dramas because they have the audience and volume to develop the best writers, directors, actors etc. Rather than accepting less, my hope is that they raise the bar even further.

-untrue, most therapies will tell you to CONFRONT your fear, depend of the CAUSE, in an external way. trauma from a car accident, take the wheel again. and although she doesnt go out of her way. since her choice is to run away from problem. which is some ppl solution. she is waiting for her chance. to get some closure.
- i think your missing the point since she is a closeted helper. she hates her father for helping other and yet she went to become soeone who it is profession. on every episode she is confronted by this contradiction. it is part of the "mystery" which is her father. it is a reaction to him. and she DOES understand she just doesnt CARE. it is very different. for me, being uncaring is better than not understanding. she knows exactly what she should do, she just prefer other to do t.
when her assistant told her about the obama patient going missing she told her assistant that it was NOT her problem and to call the police. while in the end going herself and trying to help, against what she is preaching to herself.
the point is a contradiction between her actions and her outside persona and what she is trying to be.
- i dont want to get into the drama debate here, because like i said bf i dont like to ruin other ppl pleasure. but i disagree, they are NOT to me on the same level of the Scandinavian. i always get exasperated by how prolonged they are compared to thrillers from other countries. and what take 2 or more episodes in kdrama usually, takes one or half,as it should.
im sorry not a fan of kdrama thrillers. i think they are NOT as intelligent. and i really tried. you feel they spoon feed you which i hate in thrillers. which to me translate that they are for a younger audience. not trying to insult.
- i dont need the background to be fleshed out. but some of the question you asked were answered indirectly, which i will not go into. you can read here or in soompi forum. i like not knowing everything, which is why i very rarely finish or even watch a kdrama fter 2 or 3 eps. usually i can already tell what will be and even the surprises dont seem that much of a surprise, but like an anecdote.
- most importantly, you should watch what you like. i agree that SK should be the pinnacle, bc they put so much money into them. but for that they need to change the way they do dramas. they have to do the WHOLE drama ahead. the writing and the filming and only during postproduction should do any refilming if needed. they dont work and make dramas in that way, therefor they wont be able to make good dramas. since they change a lot of the times during the filming and aim to be popular rather than good.

what i meant to say about the thrillers that they dont seem to be well planed. and the story isnt tight and cohesive enough. it usually takes from wat i know about a year including post to conclude a drama, in other countries. but here its touch and go. if im using the expression right.

He nailed it as a god with his way of speaking. And in WLFKBJ he nailed it as a bubly freshman. Either way I think he has great potential. And he still has a long way to go in dramaland.
As much as I love NJY and his real life gf i do think both leads have charisma and chemistry. ?
