Sophisticated gods and stylish servants in Bride of the Water God 2017 posters
by tineybeanie
Character posters for tvN’s Bride of the Water God 2017, a supernatural fantasy romance drama about the love story between a god and his mortal servant, have been released, and they’re darker and more seductive than I expected. The group poster above reads, “In a realistic world, an unrealistic divine romance unfolds.”
Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) plays a psychiatrist who becomes a god’s servant. Her character is a strict realist and pragmatist, which is why the text in her poster reads: “I can’t afford to consider a stranger’s situation.” Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju), who plays the god her family has been fated to serve for generations, introduces himself in his poster: “I’m the sovereign of the Water Kingdom, the Water God, your owner, Ha-baek.” I don’t know why, but he descends to the mortal realm, unleashing his divine-fatale charms everywhere.
Krystal (She’s So Lovable) has that haughty expression pat down for her character, Mura, who is also a deity from the Water Kingdom. Granted, she’s a minor one sent to Earth as part of management control, but she certainly has a hoity-toity attitude in her copy, which reads, “Who dares step in front of me?” She’s supposed to have an unrequited crush on Ha-baek, and Bi-ryum, played by Gong Myung (Drinking Solo) is supposed to have a crush on her, and so the circle of one-sided love continues.
Out of all five character posters, Gong Myung’s is the most lighthearted (he’s the only one not making a moody expression), perhaps to signify his playful personality, as a sky deity whose position on the corporate god ladder is the same as Mura’s. The text on his poster says, “Hey do water gods only hang out with each other? Am I really the outcast here?”
The man who completes the other end of the love circle is Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond), who plays a mortal entrepreneur more perfect than a god but with a human side to him. He’s all dressed up in a suit for his poster, saying, “With actions come responsibility.” Although his relationship with the heroine So-ah (Shin Se-kyung) begins with bickering, it ends up becoming something more romantic as they get to know each other.
To be honest, I wasn’t completely sold on this cast list, but as the pretty posters and stills keep coming and the premiere date date approaches, my preconceptions are slowly shifting in the positive direction. Monday-Tuesday drama Bride of the Water God begins in less than two weeks, on July 3.

I really liked his hair in WFKBJ. It fit his character as Joonhyung. As for Habaek, I think they could have gone for another look. Something that screams divine fatale. lol because the mini-mullet is definitely not.

I agree. All the posters and teaser look so beautiful, but I'm not a supporter of NJH's hairstyle (like Miky said, basically the back part of it). I really hope the actual series lives up to all the stills and trailers I've been seeing.

The fact that the writer of this drama is the writer of Misaeng is keeping my hopes up. But to be honest I don't know what to think. I hope I get proven wrong, I want this to be good.

I don't think I knew that this was done by the writer of Misaeng ? So, now I am not sure if I should get my hopes up or leave them down. I am very nervous about the acting on a lot of fronts here. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Which is nerve racking cuz I want this to be good!

Me too. On one hand, you've the Misaeng's writer. On the other hand, you've a very Joon Hyung-like acting from NJH (see that in a teaser) and a cast you have no idea about their acting skills.. hmm this is going to be tough deciding to maintain high hope or just leave it down.

I thought of Twilight after reading tineybeanie's post here. A group of gods where one is the one , another is the haughty girl pining for that guy, and then we have the playful and serious dudes... and at the center of it all is a human girl. hehe!

I'm still not sure what to expect with this drama, and at the same time, I don't know how I feel about it. At least with the pretty posters and teasers, I'm curious enough to check it out. Hopefully this show exceeds my expectations and dismisses my unexplainable concern about it. Everyone looks amazing though!

Totally agree that Im Joo Hwan is really the best actor here by a lot. 2nd for me is Gong Myung. But keeping expectations low because the rest are hit or miss in their performances. Really hoping Nam Joo-hyuk proves that his great performance in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju was actually acting and not just reality at the time.

And suddenly, I'm excited for Krystal now. Look at her hold that cup, I like her when she plays this type of characters. Hopefully, she doesn't pine over Habaek for very long. If they're going to deviate from the manhwa I hope they forgo that part too.
I'm still wondering if they're going to include the girl who was Habaek's first love (I forget her name now) but if she's supposed to look exactly like So-ah, are they going to have Shin Se-kyung play the character as well?

She looks like she's posing for a cf with the cup.
At least this type of snooty character suits her, it sounds like her Heirs character without a school uniform.

In the manhwa, Ha-baek's first wife's name was Nak-bin, and the next bride that could enter the water kingdom after her death was supposed to be her reincarnation. So-ah was able to enter the kingdom, but she's not Nakbin's reincarnation or look-a-like.

The leads are breathtakingly beautiful...and I had forgotten that Gong Myung was here, I loved him in Drinking solo, he was a cutie pie.
Well, I'm totally in the mood for some fantasy and breezy adventures of all these pretty people to fill my summer nights, so I hope this is funny and the writer does not disappoint. A bit of hot romance would be a plus but I don't want to get ahead of myself. I'm counting the days for this to start. ?

No matter how much pretty they put into this and no matter how much I like the male lead, the total lack of chemistry between the water God and his so called bride is unfortunately having me skipping this drama... maybe it's also because I don't really like SSK. She never stood out for me...

I really love the director of Misaeng but this casting..... who thought it's a good idea to cast Nam Joo Hyuk as the Water God? Shin Se Kyung is not bad as that kind of female lead but NJH? He was ok in Moon Lovers but someone pointed out he's not suitable to play this type of character and they are right.

I loved the original manhwa, so every time I see more info on this drama I have to remind myself not to get my hope up too hard, especially since they state that it isn't a true adaptation. Maybe it will be good enough on its own that I won't feel the need to compare.

Okay fine, you've won, I'M SO GONNA WATCH THIS SHOW!!
I'm very curious about it now, even if its a train wreck, I'll still watch it to feast on the superficial. And now I'm considering trying The Heirs....*shudders*.
I didn't really care for Krystal (don't know her, heard bad things about She's So Lovable) but, I gotta say, she's perfectly casted if we're going by the stills alone. The way she's holding that teacup and looking like the she's the bizniz and knows it, is so perfectly haughty. So now I'm anticipating the bratty Second Female Lead, in a love triangle... square?

Wait, what? These are the official posters? Noooooo! How can they do that after showing us marvelous computer graphics in their teasers? Seriously! There's no defined artistic theme except for the title. Their graphic designer went on vacation because doing close ups, placing them on their left or right, and darkening the whole poster for a gloomy effect is not acceptable ... not in this drama, with magical components and so much to create from ... ?

I am cautiously optimistic, nothing about the trailers appear to be exciting enough to tune in except for Im Joo Hwan. I wonder when will he stop playing second lead to mediocre actors and mediocre lead female. Whoever cast them seem optimistic and confidant, so here's hoping I am wrong about this one being a train-wreck and it turns out really well made and well acted.

I read this manhwa and really liked the art. It's too bad we're not going to see all the beautiful costumes. So-ah is cast well in terms of looks. Her hairstyle looks great. NJH's hair is distracting me from his features that would have fit Ha-baek. Will give this drama a shot to see how it plays out. Hope it's good!
